Bicycling Magazine’s Biketown USA program brings Free Bikes to Miami 8/25/09

What do you want to change about your life? Do you wish you were in better health? Wish you were more connected to your community? Do you wish you could save money on gas?

Bicycling magazine and MetLife have the solution: Start riding a bike. In its seventh year, Bicycling’s BikeTown USA, presented by MetLife, is giving away 30 bikes to Miami residents. People interested in changing their daily lives will have the opportunity to see how a bike can improve life for themselves, their families, and even their communities.

“In our seventh year of BikeTown USA, we wanted to refocus the program on neighborhoods, where people spend time with their family and friends,” said Loren Mooney, editor-in-chief of Bicycling. “A bike becomes the ultimate neighborhood multi-tasking tool – you can connect with your community, improve your health and travel to the local coffee shop all by riding a bike.”

Anyone interested in receiving a new bike simply needs to tell Bicycling, in 50 words or less, how having a Jamis Communter 1 or Citizen 1 bike would help make a change in his or her life. Bicycling’s editors will select what they feel are the 30 best essays and the selected writers will each receive a bike to keep.

Bicycling tracks participants’ progress for three months, with results featured in the magazine and on Bicycling.com. Previous stories have been astonishing – thousands of pounds have been lost, blood pressure and diabetes medications dropped, marriages saved, impromptu bike clubs started, and countless bike commuter miles logged to save money on gas and help the environment. In essence, thousands of people enjoy their lives more because they spend more time on a bike.

“On behalf of MetLife, we are proud to sponsor this year’s BikeTown USA to help bring bicycling to people across the United States and in Miami this month,” said Michael J. Vietri, executive vice president, Individual Distribution, MetLife. “As a company, we have a long-standing history of community involvement and are particularly focused on people’s health and well being. Through bicycling, our clients and their friends and families have an outlet to relieve stress, improve their health and have fun.”

Participant entries are being accepted at www.bicycling.com/biketown until August 21st. The BikeTown event will be happen at Bayfront Park on Thursday, August 27, 2009 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. All selected participants will receive a new Jamis Commuter 1 or Citizen 1 bike, a helmet from Lazer and a lock from OnGuard.

“Jamis is proud to join the team as the Official Bike of BikeTown 2009,” said Carine Joannou, President of Jamis Bicycles. “We’ve been building bikes for 30 years and know firsthand how cycling can change lives. We are really looking forward to helping BikeTown participants achieve their goals.”

Frost Art Museum presents The Missing Peace: Artists Consider the Dalai Lama

The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University presents the opening of The Missing Peace: Artists Consider the Dalai Lama. The exhibition, a result of the collaboration between the Committee of 100 for Tibet and the Dalai Lama Foundation focuses and explores art as a medium for peace inspiring readers in pursuing peace in their lives, both personally and in their communities. The exhibition opens on Friday, October 9, 2009 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Over 40 pieces of art from collections done by different artists who have created their own interpretations and answers concerning the 14th Dalai Lama will be on display throughout The Museum. The artists were asked to create portrayals of the Dalai Lama, and as a result a collection of tapestries, photographs, and paintings were created with multiple images, themes, and media that mirrors the many roles the Dalai Lama plays within the world. The title of the exhibition, The Missing Peace: Artists Consider the Dalai Lama, is a play on words, showing that peace will always be missing in our world. The Dalai Lama consistently shows that dedicating oneself to peace is anything but pointless. The purpose of this exhibition is not to focus just on the work of the individual artists, but upon peace. The works inspired by the Dalai Lama seek to inspire other to have love and patience, and generate compassion.

The artists were asked to create portrayals of the Dalai Lama, and as a result a collection of tapestries, photographs, and paintings were created with multiple images, themes, and media that mirrors the many roles the Dalai Lama plays within the world. The artists not only explore the Dalai Lama himself, but also discover and explore other multiple features of the leader. The exhibition includes work by Chuck Close, Laurie Anderson, Bill Viola, Jenny Holzer, Anish Kapoor, Richard Gere, Marina Abramovic, and Michele Oka Doner, among others. Each of these artists has a unique set of ideas and that will inspire, engage, and educate the viewers. The Dalai Lama is a global spiritual leader, temporal leader, and a Buddhist who has demonstrated a path to peace. The exhibition is going to broaden the appreciation for the Dalai Lama and all the principles and qualities he embodies. The Missing Peace is funded in part by Funding Arts Network and The Charles Wei-Hsun Fu Foundation.

About:
Educate Tomorrow, Corp. is an international, nonprofit, certified 501(c)(3) organization. All over the world, poverty denies children, as well as adults, the promises of a better tomorrow. Forgotten by society and social welfare programs, children born into poverty are trapped in a cruel and often violent cycle that frequently continues for generations. Lacking the inspiration, confidence, knowledge, and means to change, entire families are lost to the cycle of hopelessness.

Educate Tomorrow believes that the best way to end the cycle of poverty is through education. Our mission is to make education an attainable goal for the most disadvantaged in our world, so that all may be afforded the possibilities that can be achieved through learning. We strive to reach out to these individuals and provide them inspiration, guidance, and support and lead them on the path of life-long learning.

Educate Tomorrow’s primary mission in the US is to provide one-on-one educational mentors to foster care children that are turning 18 and “aging out” of the system. Since its founding in 2003, Educate Tomorrow has successfully implemented its mentoring programs, education programs and life skills camps across the nation. Additionally, it has reached internationally by continuing to support the work of it’s founders who established one of the first local language primary schools, adult literacy programs and boarding schools in the remote and impoverished village of Kabey Fo in Niger, West Africa.

Frost Art Museum Target Wednesday After Hours Opening of Geoffrey Olsen 9/2/09

he Frost Art Museum Presents Target Wednesday After Hours
Opening exhibition of Geoffrey Olsen’s work, CCE Poets’ Room. Teorema opening and a performance by Isadora Duncan Dance Ensemble

The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University presents an evening celebrating the opening of Geoffrey Olsen’s show Miami Paintings along with a performance by the Isadora Duncan dance ensemble and the opening of Poet’s Room. Teorema in the first Target Wednesday After Hours event this fall. This event will take place on Wednesday, September 2, 2009 from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Geoffrey Olsen was the director of graduate studies at Florida International University. Born in Merthyr Tydfil, Geoffrey Olsen studied art at Bristol, Newport, Cardiff and the Academy of Fine Art in Munich and to this day is one of the most original painters to come from the Welsh Valleys. Olsen’s artwork was inspired by the natural landscapes and traditions of his homeland. His paintings are characterized by a bold, free-flowing use of oil paint in layers, and he develops themes based on the native forms of his hometown and on the light and environment of Miami, where he spent his last years. His show will feature all the paintings he created while living in Miami.

Poet’s Room. Teorema exhibition is a result of the partnership of Centro Cultural Español de Miami, Govern de les illes Balears and Institut Ramon, Spain. In 1305, the Balearic philosopher Ramon Llull introduced the concept of a logic machine in his work Ars generalis ultima. This tool was influential when first conceived in the middle ages, and is still relevant today. The exhibition will include work by Spanish artist Horacio Sapere, a documentary series, and a round table discussion by scholars on the philosopher’s work.

This event will also feature a performance by the Isadora Duncan Ensemble, which was founded by FIU Professor of Dance, Andrea Montell Seidel in 1992. This is the fifth generation to bring about Isadora’s legacy of solo and group dances. The company has performed at the Internationales Tanzfestival Nordrhein-Westfalen in Germany, the Goethe Festival in St. Petersburg, Russia; New York Lincoln Center Festival Out-of-Doors, the Kennedy Center in Washington, and at major festivals throughout Latin America. The Frost Museum lecture/performance will feature solos and duets from Isadora’s original repertory, 1905-1923 performed by Ensemble members and will include a brief discussion and audience question and answer session related to Isadora’s art and legacy.

New Hot Series in Miami Beach Puts Musicians Back to Work 8/16,23/09

Vintage-Soul-August-2009-small
Hot New Vintage Soul Series Opens At The Van Dyke Cafe August 16 and At The News Lounge August 23rd Puts Artists Back to Work

The upstairs lounge in The Van Dyke Café is very unassuming. In fact, if it wasn’t for the video stream downstairs, you might not even know about the mystical experiences happening right above the common area. But for those “in the know”, it’s the ultimate in true raw traditional musical talent where artists unleash and audiences get a glimpse of an exclusive rare treat of talent available for the taking.

Upstairs at The Van Dyke Café on South Beach, a new series called “Vintage Soul”, co-produced by harmonica player, Randy Singer, keeps the music scene rocking and rolling with an exceptional grouping of local artists banning together to create and play music to a captive and appreciative audience. The interactive series features live music ranging from R&B and neo soul to jazz, blues, reggae, funk and gospel, spanning four generations of music including classics from Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Bob Marley, Chaka Khan, Sade, Alicia Keys, among many others. Due to the initial success and unprecedented response of the special performance held earlier this month, The Van Dyke Café located at 846 Lincoln Road in Miami Beach, rated the “Best Jazz Club” by Miami New Times, will host the series on a regular basis once a month until December, beginning Sunday, August 16, 9pm-1am. Sister café The News Lounge located on 5580 NE 4th Court in The Courtyard at 55th Street Station in Miami will also host the series starting August 23. As a new age outdoor garden lounge this setting acts as the perfect backdrop to the new series.

Co-producer of Vintage Soul, Natasha Haynes of PhoenixStar Entertainment comments on the purpose of the series and the state of the music industry today. She says, “The Vintage Soul series was created not only to pay tribute to classic soul music of yesterday and today, but to also give undiscovered artists and talented vocalists a moment in the spotlight. Major record labels have cut back on promoting new artists and traditional ways of promotion are simply not available anymore. Those with true talent have to self-promote and use whatever tools they have available to reach the audience that values their quality. So whether they are singing a classic soul cover song or one of their original songs, Vintage Soul, gives artists a platform of exposure so that they can market themselves and showcase their talent.”

Haynes enjoys working with singer, songwriter, and musician Randy Singer who, she says, helps find work for musicians. “Randy makes sure artists are seen and appreciated. He provides bookings, enthusiasm, and the tools they need to continue their work in an atmosphere that induces creativity and cohesiveness.” Singer is based in Miami and books talent all over the tri county area in addition to booking all the nightly entertainment at The Van Dyke Café and The News Lounge through his company Randy Singer Music. He himself has played all over the world with such greats as Franco da Vita, Toots Thielemans, Caetano Veloso, Juan Luis Guerra, Timbaland and Julio Iglesias in such places as Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Paris, Czech Republic, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Germany, Amsterdam, Mexico, New York, and Nashville.

With music by The Derek Mac Band backing some of South Florida’s local artists, this series is already a hit and the best kept secret. With limited space and no cover, it’s best to get there early. For more information or if you’re interested in playing for the series, email phoenixstarmusic@aol.com with your photos, web-links, mp3 files and whatever else you think earns you some stage time or visit http://www.thevandykecafe.com/vintagesoul.

Seraphic Fire Presents: Tableau Baroque in Handel’s Inheritance
Par ot Seraphic Fire’s NEW Summer Series. Join us for Handel’s Inheritance, a musical journey through the formative years of this giant of the Baroque period. Starting in Halle, Germany, we trace his travels through Italy and into England, savoring the cosmopolitan blending of French, Italian, and Germanic styles so popular in Europe at he time. Hear the music of Handel’s youth, from chapel, chamber, and stage, as these influences blend into the unmistakable sound of the mature master. Through the compositions of Corelli, Keiser, Schelle, J.P. Krieger, Zachow, Steffani, Handel himself, and others, experience the sonic tapestry of the world in which this young composer became the man we now celebrate. Tableau Baroque is an American chamber music ensemble dedicated to bringing the music of the Baroque to life through emotionally connected, historically informed, illuminating performances. Core members Ian Howell, countertenor, and Henry Lebedinsky, early keyboards, are joined for this concert by Michael Albert, baroque violin/countertenor, and Brian Howard, baroque cello.

August 29 – September 13
John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall

The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County is proud to present, for the first time in the United States, the internationally acclaimed hit musical THE HARDER THEY COME, opening August 29 in the John S. and James L. Knight Concert. Direct from London’s West End, THE HARDER THEY COME will offer audiences a peek into the journey of an aspiring reggae star as depicted in the 1972 international breakthrough film that caused a reggae music explosion heard around the world.

Hailed by Time Out as “a real thrill…the band is tight, the clothes are right – it’s a sure-fire smash hit,” THE HARDER THEY COME features a cast of 16 Jamaican-born performers and tells the story of young singer Ivanhoe Martin (played by Rolan Bell) as he arrives in Kingston, Jamaica with dreams of becoming a reggae star. A corrupt and drug-fueled music industry drives him into a fast and furious life as Jamaica’s most-wanted outlaw and most-celebrated underground star. Reggae music star and pioneer Jimmy Cliff starred in the ‘70s film of the same title, which catapulted the island’s signature sound into a globally recognized and respected genre, turning Jimmy Cliff and reggae music in general, into an international sensation. “With top-class acting, singing and dancing, [this] superb production faithfully distils not just the movie’s music and characters, but also, somehow its soul” (The Standard).

“The Harder They Come made music history, introducing the world, and the United States in particular, to reggae music. Miami, in the summer of 2009, will be long remembered as the epicenter of cultural history as we host the U.S. premiere of this hit musical at the Adrienne Arsht Center,” said Adrienne Arsht Center President and CEO, M. John Richard. “With three international stage productions to enjoy this summer, including the return of last summer’s smash-hit Celia: The Life and Music of Celia Cruz and the visual spectacular Fuerza Bruta, South Florida has a world of entertainment options that reflect the diversity of our resident community.”

Accompanied by a killer band of outstanding reggae musicians, the cast performs all the classic songs from the film soundtrack, including “By the Rivers of Babylon,” the title song, and the unforgettable global phenomenon, “You Can Get It If You Really Want.”

The film of THE HARDER THEY COME was written, produced and directed by the late Perry Henzell. Perry also wrote the book for the musical, which was originally produced by Theatre Royal Stratford East and UK Arts. The West End production, which comes to Miami is directed by Kerry Michael and Dawn Reid and produced by Jan Ryan and Robert Fox.

THE HARDER THEY COME is sponsored in part by Heineken USA Incorporated.

Imagine Miami Changemaker Conference II Placemaking at Miami Dade College Wolfson Campus 7/18/09

IM_ChangeConf_FrontWeb
How Local Residents Can Create Better Parks, Beaches, Blocks and Other Public Spaces “Placemaking” is Focus of Upcoming Imagine Miami Changemaker Conference II

The second in a three-year series, the Imagine Miami Changemaker Conference II on July 18, 2009 focuses on the power of place. Local residents will learn how to create and sustain the public spaces that build community, from community gardens to family-friendly parks and city blocks. Presented by the Human Services Coalition (HSC), the event will be held in downtown Miami at Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus, in the Chapman Conference Center, from 9:30 am – 5:30 pm. To pre-register (deadline July 10), residents can go to www.imaginemiami.org or call (305) 576-5001.

“By bringing together more than 200 aspiring, emerging and seasoned community leaders from diverse backgrounds, including participants in HSC’s civic programs,” says Imagine Miami director Corinna Moebius, “we’ll cross-fertilize good ideas and practices and inspire people with real-life examples of how residents are transforming local places. We’ll also help people connect with each other and with specific opportunities.”

Participants will learn to use innovative place-related tools and approaches for advocacy, resident engagement and community development, including community mapping and GIS, asset mapping, and placemaking tools developed by Project for Public Spaces (PPS). PPS (pps.org) has worked in 2,000 communities in 26 countries around the world, helping people turn their public spaces into vital community places, with programs, uses, and people-friendly settings that build local value and serve community needs. Hands-on workshops will be led by Cynthia Nikitin of PPS (pps.org), Dwayne Marsh of PolicyLink (policylink.org), Delia Caderno of Partnership for Community Transformation and Jacqueline Sartan of the University of Miami. In the placemaking workshop, residents will break into groups and use the PPS Place Evaluation tool to evaluate specific sites in downtown Miami.

Conference attendees can win $500 for their local place-based project (like a community garden). Local groups have until July 1 to submit a one-page proposal to create/improve a local public space. During the conference, attendees will vote for one of ten semi-finalist proposals. The three finalists will have five minutes each to pitch their project during the conference, with additional time to answer questions from a panel of judges and conference attendees. Judges include Charles Auslander of The Children’s Trust, Kris Smith of the Funders’ Network for Smart Growth and Livable Communities, Cynthia Nikitin and Corinna Moebius.

Funded by The Children’s Trust and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the conference is designed to be family friendly. Eco-educational activities for kids will take place all day, led by Kiki Mutis (Director of the Community Science Workshop at Citizens for a Better South Florida) and environmental educator Sofie Geckler. Near the close of the conference, kids will share their own ideas for better neighborhoods with the rest of the attendees. Parents can bring children 5 and up for no extra cost, and up to 80 parents are eligible for a discounted $5 registration fee if they apply by July 3rd . The regular conference price is $25.

Other conference highlights include a keynote presentation by Cynthia Nikitin, a World Café dialogue on creating family-friendly neighborhoods, hands-on demonstrations of online mapping tools (e.g., policylink.org and the Children’s Trust’s KidsMap), exhibits showcasing local place-related projects, a video Story Booth (courtesy of WPBT’s uvuvideo.org), and a culminating drumming activity led by local artist/activist Lela Lombardo.

Following the conference, participants can continue their connection and collaboration with local changemakers via our “Community Cafes”: neighborhood-based dialogues led by local residents trained in community dialogue techniques. They can also connect via our online civic network (imaginemiami.ning.com), and continue building skills, awareness and connections via HSC’s advocacy and leadership programs and workshops.

About the Changemaker Conference Series
HSC launched its three-year series of Changemaker Conferences (two a year) in response to the success of its 2008 Imagine Miami Summit on Arts, Culture & Civic Engagement, which South Florida residents described as uplifting, connecting, energizing and transformative. The series is part of HSC’s broader strategy to cultivate networks of trust (social capital) and increase residents’ capacity to be catalysts for participatory, community change. They are also an important vehicle for connecting the emerging leaders participating in HSC’s civic programs, including Public Allies Miami-Dade, Parent Leadership Training Institute (PLTI), Advocacy Corps Training (ACT), Neighborhood Leadership Program, Creative Impact and Imagine Miami. Through the civic programs of HSC, single parents, minority youth, immigrants, low-income residents and others have become leaders in their communities.

The conferences build upon each other, and each increases awareness and knowledge of particular techniques, success stories and opportunities. The first conference (April 4, 2009) focused on asset-based approaches (leveraging community strengths); storytelling for social impact; and community dialogue techniques. By 2011, we expect at least 1,000 local residents to become champions for civic engagement and community involvement in South Florida.

A committee of hard-working and dedicated volunteers, interns and contributing HSC staff has been meeting weekly to help Imagine Miami director Corinna Moebius plan the conference. Core volunteers include Sam Van Leer of Urban Paradise Guild, Linda McGlathery of the Garden Project, Harold Silva of Miami Dade College, Roger Horne of Belafonte TACOLCY youth center, Brad Knoefler of the Omni/Park West Redevelopment Association and Luz Agudelo, an HSC Public Ally who works with Little Havana residents. Interns include Alexandra Torres and Julia Atkinson.

In-kind support is provided by Miami Dade College and uVu (www.uvuvideo.org, the community video project of local public TV station WPBT).

About the Human Services Coalition (HSC) and Imagine Miami
Founded in 1995, the Human Services Coalition (HSC) identifies and launches innovative strategies to help people and communities thrive. HSC works through a network of partner organizations, linking people with financial education, healthcare information, public benefits and educational and economic opportunities. HSC’s programs promote economic self- sufficiency, participation in civic life and respect across many divides.

HSC inspires people to get involved and prepares them to step up to leadership roles that lead to long-term community transformation. As we learn to live and work together, we find common purpose and build a more just and inclusive society.

The Imagine Miami (IM) initiative was founded by HSC President and CEO Daniella Levine, and has grown into a “civic network” of local changemakers. IM connects people through the Changemaker conferences and other workshops, its online civic network (imaginemiami.ning.com), and special guides to local resources (see www.imaginemiami.org).

Having Already Wowed Audiences In New York, London, Argentina, Colombia And Brazil, The Mind-Blowing Smash Hit Fuerza Bruta arrives in Miami headlining the Adrienne Arsht Center’s 2009 Summer Season

Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami- Dade County is thrilled to announce the Miami premiere of the international hit Fuerza Bruta, a non-stop collision of dynamic music, visceral emotion, and kinetic aerial imagery that resembles nothing less than a fantastic mash-up between aerial theater and a late-night dance party.

Beginning June 9, the Lynn Wolfson Stage inside of the Adrienne Arsht Center’s Sanford and Dolores Ziff Ballet Opera House will be transformed into an alternate universe with flying dancers, pumping beats, engaging dream sequences and a multidimensional swimming pool above the heads of the audience.

Fuerza Bruta opens officially on June 11, with preview performances June 9 and 10, and will be on stage for a limited 4-week engagement.

“More than 130,000 people enjoyed a performance at the Center last summer. With the presentation of Fuerza Bruta beginning in June, the Adrienne Arsht Center brings to Miami a show that will rock South Florida – a cutting-edge performance that has been a hit all over the world,” said M. John Richard, president and CEO of the Adrienne Arsht Center.

Breaking free from the confines of spoken language and theatrical convention, Fuerza Bruta is an event where worlds collide and reality takes a back seat. This heart-pounding theatrical experience takes place completely on the Lynn Wolfson stage and begins the moment audiences walk in through the Center’s loading dock (dubbed the “Media Dock”) into the Fuerza Bruta lounge – a hip urban space alive with heart-pounding club music directed by Miami’s best DJs, multimedia art installations created by local artists, and a signature Barton G. restaurant inspired by the show.

At show time, audiences are ushered onto the main stage where they are engulfed in a 360 degree spectacle featuring mind-blowing visual effects just inches above the audience that must be seen to be believed – a man running full throttle on a giant treadmill, bursting through a series of moving walls; performers suspended in mid-air surrounded by a vast sea of mylar; and gorgeous women twisting ethereally in a lucite pool above the audience. Argentinean creative genius Diqui James, one of the creators of the smash hit show De La Guarda, created the original scenes and magnificent customized staging exclusively for the Miami engagement.

As the performance winds down, the visual and aural party continues in the Fuerza Bruta lounge. The pre- and post-party lounge is open to the general public.

“The audience experience will be unlike any other presentation at the Adrienne Arsht Center. From the unique entrance through the loading dock and onstage experience to the interactive pre- and after-party components, Fuerza Bruta will be the talk of the town this summer,” continued Richard.

Fuerza Bruta has a company in New York that is currently performing their second blockbuster year, as well as a touring company that has played major cities worldwide including New York, Buenos Aires, Lisbon, London, Cordoba, Bogota, Edinburgh, Berlin, Mexico, and Sao Paulo to high critical acclaim.

Fuerza Bruta premiered in Buenos Aires in 2005 and has been seen in Lisbon (2006), London (2006), Buenos Aires (2006), Bogota (2007) and at the prestigious Edinburgh Fringe Festival (2007), where it earned critical praise and was honored with the Bank of Scotland Herald Angel award for “the biggest and best show on the Fringe – the must see event of 2007” (The Herald). In October 2007, Fuerza Bruta debuted at New York City’s Daryl Roth Theatre where De La Guarda had played a smashing six-year off-Broadway run. The New York engagement is attracting national media attention and quickly extended its run due to overwhelming demand. Celebrity followers include Leonardo DiCaprio, Justin Timberlake, Madonna, Cameron Diaz, Sting, Britney Spears, Harrison Ford, Tyra Banks, Robert DeNiro, Catherine Zeta Jones, Sandra Bullock, Lucy Liu, Demi Moore, and Drew Barrymore, among others.

Fuerza Bruta was created by Diqui James (De La Guarda Co-founder/Co- creator); Gaby Kerpel (De La Guarda Composer/Musical Director); Alejandro Garcia (De La Guarda Technical Director) and Fabio Daquila (De La Guarda Production Supervisor).

Fuerza Bruta is presented in Miami by the Adrienne Arsht Center, S2BN Entertainment and Ozono Productions. The Miami production is sponsored by Opera Tower and the Riviera South Beach Hotel, part of South Beach Group Hotel collection. The Miami New Times is the official media sponsor of the Miami production.

Additionally, the proposed Virginia Key Master Plan should emphasize the opportunities for mixed-use waterfront development, including the redevelopment of the properties along the Marine Stadium Basin, integrate and recommend improvements to the existing Sewage Treatment Plant, integrate and preserve the historic Virginia Key Beach Park, as well as make recommendations for future island wide improvements and the protection of the remaining public beaches, parks and conservation areas.

VENTUSand FUNDarte present Habana Abierta at the American Airlines Arena 6/6/09

willy-aaa-flyer_web1
EVENTUS, in collaboration with FUNDarte, are pleased to present the renowned Cuban ensemble Habana Abierta. The band, which is based in Madrid, will appear for a one-time-only engagement next Saturday, June 6th at 8:00 p.m. at the American Airlines Arena, located at 601 Biscayne Blvd, Miami as the Opening Act at Willy Chirino’s concert.
Habana Abierta emerges from the creative resurgence that took place in the city of Havana in the early 1990’s, when a new generation of composers, musicians, visual artists and writers were paving a new cultural scene in Cuba.
Habana Abierta arrives to Spain in July 1996 and from that point on they have made an impact in the Latin musical scene drawing the recognition and admiration of internationally renowned musicians and writers, such as Ana Belen, Victor Manuel, Ketama, Tomasito, Ana Torroja, Raimundo Amador, among others. Habana Abierta has already three productions under its belt: Habana Abierta. 24 Horas (24 Hours) and Boomerang; all three albums have defined Habana Abierta’s sound which are full of musical innovations that defined their debut release, consolidating a new style of Cuban pop, rock, evocative of the musical styles of Los Van Van, Irakere, NG La Banda, Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Rolling Stones.
On June 6th , at the biggest venue in Miami, American Airlines Arena, Habana Abierta will join Miami fans once again as an opening act for Willy Chirino’s International Tour Pa’lante. They will bring us an evening of high-voltage World Cuban music -from Habana Abierta to Boomerang, in addition to some new themes.

Target Wednesday After Hours: Walk-through Exhibit with Collectors Debra and Dennis Scholl and Lecture by Artist Carlos Estevez

The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum presents Target Wednesday After Hours on June 3rd at 6 p.m. Collectors Debra and Dennis Scholl will walk through The Museum’s current exhibition, Because I Say So. Following the walk-through, a presentation titled “Theatrum Mundi: A Journey Through 17 Years of Work” will be given by Cuban artist Carlos Estevez as part of the Félix González-Torres Community Art Project at FIU. The event is free and open to the public.

Major collectors Debra and Dennis Scholl present the often unseen sculpture that is central to their significant contemporary art collection. The Scholls have been in the forefront as collectors and supporters of emerging and established contemporary artists for many years. They describe their process as looking for “work that succeeds both on and below the surface, evoking a strong response, and not necessarily a positive one. “So long as a viewer is engaged enough to give a reaction, either one of pleasure or discomfort, we feel that the work has succeeded”. Their vision for the future of their artists has not only resulted in extraordinary recognition for work that was virtually unknown, but also, as they certainly “took chances” in their choices over the years, in the compilation of a collection that is as unique as it is provocative and representative of the cutting-edge of art.

Carlos Estevez studied at the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana Cuba, where he was born. Start Up Weekend The Launch Pad University of Miami 6/5-7/09

If you are a startup or self employed you must come to this event! Here is some info about what to expect:

Startup Weekend recruits a highly motivated group of developers, business managers, startup enthusiasts, marketing gurus, graphic artists and more to a 54 hour event that builds communities, companies and projects. Founded in 2007 by Andrew Hyde, the weekend is a concept of a conference focusing on learning by creating. It is known for its quick decisions, ‘out of the box’ thinking (oh no, the buzzwords are attacking!), unique facilitation technique and letting the founders show what they can do.

The participants that attend a Startup Weekend decide what they want to tackle over the weekend and come out at the end with several developed companies or projects. Attendees are responsible for bringing the same desire and passion to the project and walk out of the room with the task at hand, in a short 54 hours. Sound intense? It is.

StartUp Weekend is open to the public.

This is an excellent opportunity to get your hands dirty starting your very own companies!

HERE II HERE, the soulful Miami-based band recently featured on Good Morning America will host a Summer Solstice Bash complete with live performances, fire dancers and a drum circle, June 20th, to commemorate the release of their first full-length album. Presented by Miami’s own Moksha Family Productions at 7th Circuit Studio (228 NE 59th St.), festivities begin at 8 p.m. and will include performances of the band’s hits such as “Besitos Chiquiticos,” “Yes” and “Holy.”

Guests of all ages can walk around and enjoy exhibits by internationally renowned artists, 13-year-old Akiane Kramarik, featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show, and United Nations world peace envoy Jacqueline Ripstein, both of whom contributed to HERE II HERE’s album artwork. Summer Solstice attendees can also engage in Tarot readings, a spirit auction, CD giveaways, raffles and spontaneous dancing, as HERE II HERE’s fused sounds of soul, world, pop and Afro-Cuban enliven the room starting at 10 p.m.

Organically connected through chance meetings, HERE II HERE band members Edwin Itoh, Jaime Triana, Alex Perez, Kazuhiro Itoh and Ashley Ruiz (formerly of Menudo) came together in 2004 and have been inspiring crowds with lyrics of awareness, harmony, laughter and love ever since. Their easy-to-understand, catchy tunes form a genre of their own: entertainment with awareness, truth, laughter, peace and love.

“Music is the invitation for everyone to notice the connection and harmony that exists in the world,” band manager Bryan Reeves says. “It promotes an awareness of reality. When we understand just how interconnected we really are, it makes relationships and creativity flow and inspires peace.”

Sponsored in part by Moksha Production Family and nonprofits The Voice of The Earth and The Environment Coalition of Miami Beach, the Summer Solstice Bash will bring together and honor spiritual community leaders and provide vegetarian tastes courtesy of Live Food, Sublime and Jef’s Tomato Toasties.

About Viceroy: Viceroy Miami is the centerpiece of the unprecedented 10-acre Icon Brickell enclave in downtown Miami. Overlooking Biscayne Bay at the gateway to Miami’s financial district, this glamorous urban resort was conceived by South Florida’s most prominent developer, Jorge Perez, in collaboration with iconic figures in architecture (Arquitectonica), interior design (Kelly Wearstler) and hospitality (Kor Hotel Management). Wearstler created a provocative blend of modern sophistication and exotic Asian accents for the hotels 162 guestrooms, suites and residences, as well as for the lobby, restaurant and exclusive Club 50 Lounge located on the 50th floor with a private pool deck. Michelin-starred Chef Michael Psilakis and Restaurateur Donatella Arpaia’s Eos restaurant anchors the project’s two-acre outdoor living room and pool terrace. Borrowing ingredients from Spain, Portugal and Morocco, Psilakis offers modern expressions of his native Greek cuisine. The eclectic menu of raw and cooked small plates encourages tasting and sharing, allowing guests to tailor an experience to any appetite. The Spa at Icon Brickell, managed by Viceroy and design by Philippe Starck features 10 treatment rooms for signature Viceroy wellness experiences, a 5,000-square-foot water lounge and an expansive fitness facility. www.viceroymiami.com

Art, Straight from the Ahol BY RAINA MCLEOD Art, Straight from the Ahol With a beard like tar-soaked cotton candy and a mouthful of 24-karat dental work, Alouishous San Gomma is hard to miss. And lucky for our cultural landscape, the Hialeah-born artist and winner of Colt 45’s Ink the Can Contest produces pieces that are just as loud — his weapon of choice being the pen and his canvas all of Miami. Also known as Aholsniffsglue, this dude creates droopy-eyed characters that pepper lightpoles and brick walls city-wide, but this Saturday, catch his work at “P(ART)Y,” a full retrospective of his career and the first exhibit that showcases Ahol’s works exclusively. “I’ve been doing my thing for quite awhile, and I’ve been involved in many different aspects of Miami, from the punk scene to the party scene to art stuff,” Ahol explains. “And this is a collective of what I’ve been doing for the past 10 years.” At Stash Gallery from 7 p.m. to midnight, fellow party boys José El Rey and Slim Biscayne (the other two-thirds of the ¿Que Pasa M.I.A.? crew) will join him, which means there’ll be no better party than this one. Did we mention there’ll be grilled cheese sandwiches?

Perhaps most notorious around Miami for the cryptic stickers and tags bearing his name that pop up on every light pole, mailbox, bar wall, and bus stop, Aholsniffsglue is one of this city’s most mysterious, prolific, and off-the-wall creative spirits. If you’ve been around the gallery circuit a bit (or have even attended one of the raucous parties hosted by his crew, ¿Que Pasa Mia?), then you’ve no doubt seen at least one of his drawings, paintings, or printworks, which often showcase his meticulous line-work in blue ballpoint pen. If you haven’t, tonight is your chance to catch up, as Stash Gallery hosts a retrospective exhibition. Ahol’s ¿Que Pasa Mia? compadre Jose el Rey mans the decks.

What Comes After
Nancy Friedemann
On View May 20, 2009- September 20, 2009
Nancy Friedemann lives and works in Bogota, Colombia and New York. In her paintings, she manipulates symbols that deal with ideas about femininity and the role of women in art history. Friedemann is inspired by Spanish colonial painting styles and Minimalism. In painting these delicate objects in a careful and detailed way, Friedemann monumentalizes them, giving them a heroic place and scale. By re-enacting the process of making lace through drawing and painting, each done with tiny strokes and an economy of materials, Friedemann explores the experience of identity and memory from a feminist perspective.

nopants
What in the world is No Pants Day?
No Pants Day is a day where everyone, be they students, respectable businessmen, or cherished community leaders, leave their pants behind. Usually this means wearing thick, appropriately modest boxer shorts, but bloomers, slips, briefs, and boxer-briefs all work as well.

Their website is a bit out of date!

Miami Downtown Development Authority and the City of Miami Celebrate the Re-Opening of Paul S. Walker Park
Three New ‘Pocket Parks’ Make Downtown More Pedestrian-Friendly and Enhance Livability

image010

WHAT: Miami Downtown Development Authority and the City of Miami hold dedication ceremony in celebration of Downtown’s newest green space, Paul S. Walker Urbanscape.

The re-opening of Paul S. Walker Urbanscape marks the culmination of three new “pocket parks” in Downtown’s Central Business District, which are part of the DDA’s larger beautification program to create a more pedestrian-friendly environment and improve the quality of life in Downtown.

The DDA invested more than $350,000 to restore these parks, introducing approximately 23,000 sq. ft. of green space into Downtown.

Immediately following the dedication, on-site samplings by neighboring restaurants will take place at Paul S. Walker Park. Entertainment and live music performances at each of the three new mini parks will liven up the lunch hour for all to enjoy.

WHO: Remarks will be made by Mayor Manny Diaz, Commissioner Joe Sanchez, Commissioner Marc Sarnoff, City Manager Pete Hernandez, and Miami DDA Executive Director Alyce Robertson, who will all speak to the impact that creating more green spaces will have to enhance the livability in Downtown.

WHEN: Tuesday, April 28th – Dedication Ceremony at Paul S. Walker Urbanscape @ 10 a.m.
Music and entertainment at all three parks until 1:30 p.m. (all within walking distance; map embedded below)

map

WHERE: Paul S. Walker Urbanscape (46 W. Flagler St.)
Thirty years ago, the original park space (named after former DDA board member and community leader) was leased by the City and replaced with a building that since became rundown and dilapidated.

Joan Lehman Sculpture Plaza (Flagler St. at SW 1st Ave)
Previously closed off to the public, the Joan Lehman Sculpture Plaza now features enhanced pedestrian access with park benches, meandering pathways, and newly planted trees.

Robert F. Clark Plaza (NW 1st Avenue and NW 1st Street)
Also once removed from the public right-of-way, this pocket park was restored and enhanced with pedestrian-friendly features.

Invitation to a Relay event this Friday 4/24/09

Can you please forward this to all your friends? This is for a Relay in West Kendall, is this Friday.

Check it out, the committee is made of about a dozen High School Kids (I worked with them) they have worked really really hard for the past six months on this event (even when they have final exams & fcats soon and they are doing an amazing job with this event).

I want to invite people to go and support them. Walk a lap with them and check out the Luminaria Ceremony (there they’ll light candles for those that lost their fight and those that survived this decease) and show them how important is to help out in the community and to support each other.

Why do I Relay?
I participate in Relay For Life because i have lost my grandfather in December 2008 from brain cancer after fighting other types of cancers for 6 years.
I relay because family friends were not able to fight the battle.
I relay because i don’t want to lose anymore loved ones.
I relay because i have friends who have lost loved ones.
I relay because i have friends with family who are currently battling cancer.
I relay because i know people who are currently fighting cancer.
I relay because i want to find the cure.
I relay because i care.
I relay because i am tired of having cancer take over innocent lives.
I relay because i need to spread the word.

We, the lakes of the meadow committee, relay because we want to play our part in fighting cancer, we want to make an event where we can promote awareness.

In the U.S men have a slightly less than a 1 in 2 lifetime risk of developing cancer: for women, the risk is a little more than 1 in 3. An average of 1.4 million people are diagnosed with cancer YEARLY, and statistics raise yearly. Florida is the second state with the largest amount of people diagnosed with cancer, at about 106,560 people yearly. so please come out to: LAKES OF THE MEADOW RELAY FOR LIFE !
located at 4450 S.W. 152 AVENUE (Bird & 152 Ave – Lakes of the Meadow Club House)
on APRIL 24TH – 25TH from 6PM TO 6AM
Overnight events symbolize:
-Cancer Never Stops.
-When a person is diagnosed with Cancer, their world crashes, it turns dark.
But then they find hope, which is when the sunrises.
The event is very symbolic, and surprisingly enough, very actively fun.
Please don’t hesitate to ask me or the LOTM committee any questions.
Visit our website: www.relayforlife.org/lakesofthemeadowfl
Join a team, create a team, donate or sign up as a volunteer and attend the event.
Participate for those you’ve lost to cancer, Participate because you care.
Please & Thank you,
-Bibiana Potestad
Team Development Chair and a Volunteer helping FIGHT Cancer.

Invitation -Safespace’s Mothers Day 5/6/09

safe-space-v2

Safespace is an organization that assists victims of domestic violence. If you can attend the event or contribute items for the auction or if you can e-mail blast this to your contacts, the women, children and men, yes that is right, men, will definitely appreciate any support we can show. It is a topic that is near and dear to several of our hearts and the ultimate question is: how many of you know someone who is or has been abused? Those that are abused, typically do not talk about it and never will bring it up so it can actually be your neighbor or your co-worker. You will be amazed.

I hope to see you there and if you can not make it to the event but can contribute something, please contact Jeannette direct as monetary donations would be appreciated as well.

Thank you Everyone for taking the time to read and review this. Stay well and have a wonderful evening.

Boris Lopez – Angeles en Bicicleta

The exhibition consists of 57 works by mentally handicapped artists from the U.S., England, Spain, Chile, Peru, Bolivia and Paraguay. The work selection was done by Juan Martin, an outsider art expert and executive director of NAEMI. NAEMI is an international organization dedicated to discovering, promoting and exhibiting work by artists with mental illness.
Many of the exhibiting artists are self-taught and they transmit a personal and intense vision of art. With initiatives such as these, the NAEMI Foundation is looking to educate the public regarding art produced by persons who have or have had mental problems.
As Lyle Rexer, author of the book “How to Look at Outsider Art”, elucidate: “Outsider art, those pieces that resist entering into that invisibility by provokingly producing a confusion in our conceptual categories, may act as an incentive for our esthetic conscience. Look again! It seems to say: Look directly and do not take anything for granted.
National Art Exhibition by the Mentally Ill (NAEMI) is a Florida non profit organization which has given art access to mentally ill persons that would have otherwise remained isolated from the contemporary cultural tendency. NAEMI’s objective is discovering, studying, promoting, exposing and also the conservation of this type of art nationwide. With this type of initiative NAEMI is trying to educate the community on outsider art, help eradicate prejudice against mental illnesses and reaffirming the creative capacity of mentally ill patients.

Frost Spring Openings Challenge the Concept of Art 4/17/09

FIU’s New Frost Art Museum announces Spring Openings That Challenge the Concept of Art

Miami, (April 15, 2009) – The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University announces major spring openings: Because I Say So from The Scholl Collection, Genetic Portraits by Nela Ochoa, and the Kenan-Flagler Family Discovery Gallery on Friday, April 17, 2009 at 6 p.m. at The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum located at 10975 SW 17 Street, Miami, FL 33199. The event is free and open to the public. Also on view will be FIU’s BFA student show, Wake.

“The exhibits, although inherently different in all respects, explore and test the limits of creativity,” said Dr. Carol Damian, director & chief curator for The Frost.

In Because I Say So, viewers will note how sculpture in particular has confounded the status-quo, especially when it defies the ordinary association with works of art, or is considered as “installation” art, or as a part of an installation. The pedestals of the past, now long forsaken, are replaced by transformative environments, sometimes entire rooms dedicated to a single artist’s work. The viewer is confounded, confronted, invited, and amazed as one becomes immersed in the space. Works are placed directly on the floor; hung from the ceiling; described in site-specific locations; cantilevered off the walls; defiantly testing notions of scale, and stimulating daring responses. Each artist provides the viewer with a point of departure for an exploration of different levels of the mind and intellect not possible with traditional sculpture or painting.

Major collectors Debra and Dennis Scholl present the often unseen sculpture that is central to their significant contemporary art collection. They describe their process as looking for “work that succeeds both on and below the surface, evoking a strong response, and not necessarily a positive one. “So long as a viewer is engaged enough to give a reaction, either one of pleasure or discomfort, we feel that the work has succeeded”.

Genetic Portraits by Nela Ochoa, a prolific and internationally recognized multi-media artist, offers works in the areas of video art, sculpture, and performance to explore the genetic codes of human bodies. Her interest in the human body has led her to work with medical images such as X-rays and MRI’s, integrating them into videos, paintings and installations. Her most recent work has led her further into the body, where she explores the mysteries of DNA.

The Kenan-Flagler Family Discovery Gallery allows visitors to experience interactive activities designed to educate and entertain. This state-of-the-art Discovery Gallery consists of 13 stations including the computer-based display, Picture Yourself, where a camera takes an image of a person’s face and reproduces it on a touch screen. Participants can then trace the contours of the face with their fingers and print the finished product. The Discovery Gallery will also include a sculpture garden based on the works of the Sculpture Park collection housed on the Florida International University Park Campus; a rubbing station where children can rub images embedded onto a table to make their own print; and a textures station based on works in The Frost Museum’s Permanent Collection.

Ros Warby’s Monumental Dance at the Arsht Center 4/24-25/09

roswarby_4x9_lr1

Tickets and more info

MONUMENTAL is Ros Warby’s latest award-winning solo dance work, developed in collaboration with her long standing artistic team, designer Margie Medlin and composer Helen Mountfort. MONUMENTAL is a richly layered movement piece, continuing to refine Warby’s integration of the solo dance form with 35mm film projection and solo cello. It draws from the iconic symbols of classical ballet, the swan and the soldier, bringing focus to our own sense of strength and dissolution, amidst the often irreconcilable tragedies and the sustaining power of beauty in the world today. The audience is invited to engage, through the solo dancer, with the innocent bird, and the brave, sometimes tainted soldier embedded within us all.
MONUMENTAL, received the Age Critics Commendation Award, the Robert Helpmann Award for Best Female Dancer, the Greenroom Award for Best Female Performer and the Greenroom Award for Best Composition. It also received Greenroom nominations for Best design, Best Choreography and Original Concept and Realisation, and a Helpmann nomination for Best New Dance Work.

Opening Night Gala Film
Patrik, Age 1.5
East Coast Premiere
Gusman Theatre
April 24, 2009 7:30PM
This will be the official kick off to the 11th season of the MGLFF line up. One of the funniest and entertaining movies of the year, by acclaimed Swedish Director and Screen Writer, Ella Lemhagen of Immediate Boarding (2003) and If Not (2001).

Sven and Goran make up an attractive and successful gay couple who’ve left the bustle of city life behind and relocated to a small town in their native Sweden. Gay people are few and far between here, and the couple’s arrival is met alternatively with hostility and over compensating pleasantries.

Still, the couple carries on, focusing their energies on the soon-coming results of their adoption application. Then the couple receives a letter that a Swedish child, Patrik, age 1.5, is in need of a home. Sven and Goran are overjoyed, and quickly begin preparing the house for its newest addition. When the fateful day to pick up their bundle of joy arrives, the two dads-to-be are in for a shocker. Patrik is actually a homophobic, 15 year-old juvenile delinquent. Patrick, Age 1.5 is as much about starting a family as it is about how our relationships change when we do.

This film is certain to be the perfect tonic to our Opening Gala Evening.

Opening Night Film: Members $17* Non-members $22*

Antonia Wright to Exhibit with Longtime Mentor the Legendary Clyde Butcher 4/17/09

The Nature of Things
Photography of Clyde Butcher and Antonia Wright
April 17th – May 29th, 2009
Opening Reception: Friday, April 17th, 2009 7 – 10pm
Renee Gallery 1331 SW 8th St, Miami, Fl 33155
clydewright
Artist Antonia Wright celebrates her Miami homecoming with a photography exhibition in conjunction with her longtime mentor, the legendary Clyde Butcher. Back from New York where she was living and studying, most recently at the International Center of Photography, Wright has teamed up with Butcher to present The Nature of Things, two divergent collections of landscape photography, opening Friday, April 17th at the Renee Gallery.

For Wright, exhibiting side by side with Butcher has brought her full circle. She began her photography career in the Everglades apprenticing for the conservation-landscape photographer. Her work has evolved to employ photography, poetry, performance, installation, and video art, using the interaction between these forms to question the world around her. Noted for The Keys Project, which examined the idea of ownership through the collecting and documenting of keys, The Nature of Things is Wright’s exploration and disruption of environment.

In her photographs, Wright documents a landscape changed by the introduction of the natural and unnatural: a body covered in grass, dirt or flowers lining a New York City Street. Using herself or another live model, Wright’s photos capture the immediacy of the performance together with the reactions of passers-by.

Wright’s vision of the natural world staging a bizarre invasion of the urban landscape contrasts sharply with the traditional, large-format, black-and-white landscape photography of Butcher. Renowned for his exquisite, beautiful images of remote and untouched landscapes, Butcher has been honored both as an artist and as a conservationist for contributing to public awareness of the environment, specifically the unique ecosystem of the Florida Everglades.

Together the work of Wright and Butcher describes a relationship with nature that is both contradictory and eerily similar. Wright’s bits of the natural world become oddities in the urban environment while Butcher’s isolated landscapes assume an exotic and alien appeal.

The Orchestra’s residency activities in Miami were conceived and made possible with the leadership of the Musical Arts Association of Miami, the Miami-based board governing the Orchestra’s Miami Residency.
A new component of The Cleveland Orchestra’s Miami Residency in 2010 will be a partnership with the Miami Music Project. Under the artistic leadership of James Judd, the Miami Music Project is a new ensemble whose primary focus is education and outreach culminating in a collaborative arts festival. Together, The Cleveland Orchestra and the Miami Music Project will develop and perform in-school and education concert programs for Miami-Dade County Public Schools students.
In 2009, Cleveland Orchestra educational collaborations featured professional-level training for New World Symphony fellows and the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music students, including master classes led by members of The Cleveland Orchestra, reading sessions of new music, and access to Cleveland Orchestra working rehearsals. In partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the Orchestra provided Education Concerts for nearly 4,000 students in grades 4 and 5, high-school coachings for older students, and a tri-county master class in collaboration with Ransom Everglades School, plus Cleveland Orchestra Family Concerts. In the Miami-Dade community, The Cleveland Orchestra partnered in a large scale performance with Miami City Ballet in January 2009 and with Books & Books, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Overtown Youth Center, and the Wolfsonian-FIU. In all, 9,000 people participated in educational and community collaboration activities, including nearly 4,000 students in the Miami-Dade County Public Schools and others in the higher-education community.
Support for the Miami Residency is provided by the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, and the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners.

Miami Residency adds to Orchestra’s existing long-term
performance relationships in New York, Lucerne, and Vienna
The Cleveland Orchestra Miami Residency project commenced in January 2007, during the 2006-07 inaugural season of the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County. The Orchestra’s residency in Miami includes an annual series of subscription concerts at the Adrienne Arsht Center as well as service to the Miami community through education concerts and activities, and community partnership programs.
The Cleveland Orchestra’s commitment to education and community service began when the Orchestra was founded in 1918, and today more than 70,000 Cleveland-area schoolchildren, teachers, families, young musicians, and adult learners participate in the Orchestra’s educational programs in Cleveland designed to nurture a lifelong love of music. With its Florida-based educational activities, the Orchestra continues to broaden its role with universities and conservatories.
In addition to its residency in Miami, The Cleveland Orchestra currently has three other intensive and regular performing relationships, including residencies, outside of Cleveland: with Carnegie Hall in New York, the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland, and the Musikverein in Vienna, Austria. In 2010, it will launch the first year of a multi-year residency at Indiana University. Continuing a long relationship with Carnegie Hall, the Orchestra committed to a multi-year association of performances there under the direction of Franz Welser-Möst. With Carnegie Hall and the Lucerne Festival, the Orchestra is involved in a biennial commissioning project, the Roche Commissions, which includes world premiere performances by the Orchestra at the Lucerne Festival. Having performed at the 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2008 Lucerne Festivals, the Orchestra will return for concerts during the 2010 Festival. The Musikverein Residency was conceived as a long-term relationship, which includes series of concerts at the Musikverein under the direction of Franz Welser-Möst. The Orchestra’s five concerts at the Musikverein in 2003 marked the first such residency by an American orchestra in the history of that venue. In its third Musikverein Residency, the Orchestra performed four concerts at the Musikverein in October/November 2007. During their Salzburg Festival Residency in August 2008, the Orchestra and Mr. Welser-Möst made five appearances in a new production of Dvořák’s Rusalka, and performed three additional concert programs.

Franz Welser-Möst Music Director Kelvin Smith Family Endowed Chair The Cleveland Orchestra
Franz Welser-Möst is in his seventh season as Music Director of The Cleveland Orchestra. His long-term commitment to the Orchestra extends to 2018, the Orchestra’s centennial.
Mr. Welser-Möst’s Cleveland Orchestra concerts during the 2008-09 season include major works central to the orchestral repertoire, among them symphonies by Beethoven, Bruckner, Mahler, Mozart, Shostakovich, and Richard Strauss, as well as fully staged performances of Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro (“The Marriage of Figaro”). His wide range of programming also will feature three world premieres and one United States premiere.
Highlights of Mr. Welser-Möst’s concerts with The Cleveland Orchestra during his first six seasons include many works new to the Orchestra’s repertoire that span four centuries, including ten world premieres and twelve United States premieres. In addition to numerous major works central to the orchestral repertoire, his expansive programming also has included works infrequently performed by the Orchestra. His programming has featured annual concert performances of opera, including Verdi’s Don Carlo and Falstaff, Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel, Richard Strauss’s Elektra and Der Rosenkavalier, and Dvořák’s Rusalka.
In Cleveland, Mr. Welser-Möst actively participates in community concerts and educational programs including the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra and partnerships with area universities.
Under Franz Welser-Möst’s direction, the Orchestra has toured extensively, to critical acclaim, and has become one of the most sought-after performing ensembles in the world. This partnership has earned the Orchestra unprecedented residencies in the United States and Europe while it continues to perform regularly in the other music capitals of the world. In addition to biennial residencies at the Musikverein in Vienna, the first of their kind by an American orchestra, the Orchestra continues its previously annual residencies at the Lucerne Festival with biennial residencies featuring Roche Commission projects. In August 2008, the Orchestra performed a residency at the Salzburg Festival that included five performances of Dvořák’s Rusalka. Domestically, the Orchestra and Mr. Welser-Möst have toured from coast to coast, including frequent performances at Carnegie Hall. In January 2007, the Orchestra began its 10-year residency project in Miami, Florida, where it performs at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County.
The recipient of major recording awards, including the Gramophone Award, the Diapason d’Or, the Japanese Record Academy Award, and two Grammy nominations, Mr. Welser-Möst has led The Cleveland Orchestra in recordings of live performances of Bruckner symphonies made in three celebrated concert venues: Symphony No. 5 in the Abbey of St. Florian in Austria; Symphony No. 9 in Vienna’s Musikverein; and Symphony No. 7, recorded during concerts at Severance Hall in September 2008. Mr. Welser-Most and the Orchestra’s recording of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, made live at Severance Hall in 2007, was released on the Deutsche Grammophon label.
In June 2007, Mr. Welser-Möst was named General Music Director of the Vienna State Opera beginning in 2010. His long partnership with the company has included acclaimed performances of Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, and features a new production of Wagner’s four-opera Ring cycle across the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons.
As General Music Director of the Zurich Opera beginning in 2005, and previously as its Principal Conductor (2002 to 2005), and Music Director (1995 to 2002), Mr. Welser-Möst conducted many new productions and numerous revivals, including performances of Wagner’s Ring cycle. In 2006, Mr. Welser-Möst conducted the Zurich Opera Orchestra and Chorus in a Pontifical Mass at the Vatican celebrated by Pope Benedict XVI, marking the 500-year anniversary of the Swiss Guard. Mr. Welser-Möst stepped down from his post as General Music Director at the Zurich Opera in July 2008.
Franz Welser-Möst regularly conducts leading European orchestras and opera companies, including those of Berlin and Vienna, and served as music director of the London Philharmonic from 1990 to 1996. After making his American debut in 1989, he returned frequently to the United States for appearances with major orchestras across the country.
Mr. Welser-Möst’s recordings, on both CD and DVD, have won a number of major awards. Recent releases for EMI include a DVD filmed at the Zurich Opera of Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier (the release won the Diapason d’Or Award in May 2005), and DVDs of Puccini’s La Bohème, Schubert’s Fierrabras, Mozart’s Don Giovanni, and Britten’s Peter Grimes.
Among Mr. Welser-Möst’s honors are recognition from the Western Law Center for Disability Rights, honorary membership in the Vienna Singverein, the 2003 Conductor of the Year Award from Musical America, the Silver Medal of the Region of Upper Austria, and the appointment as an Academician of the Yutse European Academy Foundation. Mr. Welser-Möst is the co-author of Cadences: Observations and Conversations, which was published in a German edition in 2007.

For Mr. Ashkenazy’s most recent conducting engagement with The Cleveland Orchestra, at Severance Hall in September 2007, he conducted complete performances of Grieg’s Peer Gynt.
In the years since Vladimir Ashkenazy first came to prominence on the world stage in the 1955 Chopin Competition in Warsaw, he has built an extraordinary career, not only as one of the most renowned and revered pianists of our times, but as an artist whose creative life encompasses a vast range of activities and continues to offer inspiration to music-lovers across the world.

In January 2009, he became principal conductor and artistic advisor to the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Alongside these positions, Mr. Ashkenazy continues his longstanding relationship with the Philharmonia Orchestra, of which he was appointed conductor laureate in 2000. In addition to his performances with the orchestra in London and around the UK each season, he tours with them worldwide.
Mr. Ashkenazy is also music director of the European Union Youth Orchestra, with whom he tours each year, and conductor laureate of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra. He maintains strong links with The Cleveland Orchestra and a number of other major orchestras with whom he has built special relationships over the years, including the San Francisco Symphony and Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin, in addition to guest appearances with many other major orchestras around the world. He returned to conduct the Berlin Philharmonic in October 2007.
Mr. Ashkenazy continues to devote himself to the piano, these days mostly in the recording studio, where he continues to build his extraordinarily comprehensive recording catalogue with releases such as the 1999 Grammy Award-winning Shostakovich Preludes and Fugues, Rautavaara’s Piano Concerto No. 3 (a work that he commissioned), and Rachmaninoff Transcriptions. Most recently released are his recordings of Bach’s Wohltemperierte Klavier and Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations.
With The Cleveland Orchestra, Mr. Ashkenazy’s recordings include the four Brahms symphonies; Beethoven’s piano concertos (as both soloist and conductor); works by Debussy, Prokofiev, and Richard Strauss; and all of Rachmaninoff’s piano-orchestral works, with soloist Jean-Yves Thibaudet.
Mr. Ashkenazy has long been involved in television projects. He has developed educational programs with NHK TV, including the 1999 Superteachers, working with inner-city London schoolchildren, and the 2003-04 documentary based around his “Prokofiev and Shostakovich Under Stalin” project with the Philharmonia Orchestra.
