History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will present a free book signing and meet & greet with retired firefighter and historian Frank P. Sullivan, author of Buddy Leads the Way. He will be available to meet guests and autograph copies of his book on Saturday, March 15, from 11 a.m. – noon. His appearance is part of History Fort Lauderdale’s “Florida Scribes & Stories,” a meet the author series that offers literary and history enthusiasts a chance to speak with local authors, purchase their latest releases and have them signed.

Frank P. Sullivan has been a member of the fire service for over 50 years as a volunteer and paid first responder. He was third generation fire fighter, starting as soon as he turned 18, volunteering in Haverstraw, New York. After moving to Florida in 1973, he switched from construction and was one of the original five hired firefighters in the City of Miramar in 1975. During the years at Miramar, his dalmatians became mascots and served the city as well. He was Fireman Frank and enjoyed teaching fire safety in the public schools, children’s hospital and nursing homes as part of his job. His love of the fire service is evident in his historical accounting of how Dalmatians became fire dogs. Sullivan retired from Miramar as a captain in 2005 and can be seen around town with his current dog, Buddy, and his 1934 restored antique fire truck.

Drinks and light bites will be provided. Guests may RSVP to info@flhc.org.

History Fort Lauderdale is proud to host a variety of engaging multicultural experiences, year-round. It seeks to bring awareness to the community through both traveling exhibits and multiple permanent exhibits including “Women Trailblazers,” “Roots of Resilience: The Journey of Black Broward,” “Fort Lauderdale – the Early Years,” “Fashion & Musical Theatre,” “From Dugouts to Dream Yachts: the story of boatbuilding along the New River,” Seminole Arts & Culture,” “New River Archaeology,” and “Take PRIDE, a retrospective on LGBTQ life in South Florida.” The nonprofit museum also hosts an artists’ collective collaborative space.

This new exhibit brings to life the acclaimed PBS KIDS® TV series, Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum, which follows kid adventurers Xavier Riddle, his little sister Yadina, and best friend Brad as they tackle everyday problems by doing something extraordinary: traveling back in time to learn from real-life inspirational figures when they were kids.

To celebrate the arrival of this exhibit based on the beloved public television series, MODS is partnering with area attractions to inspire future learning with a fun and fulfilling twist.

In Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum: The Exhibit, families and young adventurers will sneak through a hidden passage to the Secret Museum and use a hologram to unlock three different times in history to meet inspirational heroes. Uncover a dinosaur skeleton with paleontologist Mary Anning, explore a secret garden with botanist George Washington Carver and look at x-rays with chemist Marie Curie. In the Hall of Heroes, learn the traits of a hero and how you can be a hero today.
The PBS KIDS® TV series, Xavier Riddle and The Secret Museum is based on the highly acclaimed children’s book series Ordinary People Change the World by #1 New York Times bestselling author and South Florida resident Brad Meltzer and award-winning letterer and illustrator Chris Eliopoulos. Following the global announcement of the discovery of a rare juvenile T. rex specimen by three young boys, the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS) is pleased to announce the premiere of T. REX, the giant screen documentary that captured this incredible expedition on camera. This captivating science adventure and a love letter to T. rex, the Greatest of All Tyrants – the GOAT – is now playing at the AutoNation® IMAX® 3D Theater.

Anchored by the true story of the young fossil hunters who made the discovery of a lifetime when they spotted a large, fossilized leg bone on a walk on public lands in North Dakota, T. REX intercuts the remarkable fossil dig, with cutting edge computer graphics that bring the iconic T. rex – from hatchling to hulking adult – to life. Narrated by Jurassic Park actor Sam Neill, T. REX explores the newest science that has helped reinvent our understanding of the iconic predator.

With hat tips to famous specimens, landmark discoveries, and wild cinematic T. rex depictions over the last century, the film also brings to life a cast of prehistoric characters including rex’s archrival, Triceratops; Quetzalcoatlus, one the largest animals ever to take flight; and the 25-foot long Sinraptor, a species that likely fed on early tyrannosaurs.

T. REX is an immersive cinema experience produced by Giant Screen Films and D3D Cinema, in partnership with the Field Museum, Denver Museum of Nature and Science, Houston Museum of Natural Science and Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, in association with the Cincinnati Museum Center, Cleveland Museum of Natural History, Museums Victoria, and New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science. The T. rex fossil featured in the film was collected on land under the jurisdiction of the US Bureau of Land Management, permit ND2023-00084.

The AutoNation® IMAX® Theater at the Museum of Discovery and Science is located at 401 SW 2nd Street in Fort Lauderdale. T. REX is included in the MODS Discovery Pass, an all-in-one ticket that includes Museum exhibitions, live science demonstrations and one IMAX documentary film. Sometimes being slow, small or weak can have its advantages in Survival of the Slowest, the newest summer traveling exhibit presented by Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, running June 7 through September 5, at the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS). Guests will get an in-depth look at the often-overlooked species that evolved to slow down as part of their survival strategy in a world where large, strong and fast animals are often at the top of the food chain.

The exhibit will feature 14 habitats with live animals (17 species) and plants. Guests will get an up-close look at wildlife with daily presentations featuring a sloth, a tarantula, tortoises, a hedgehog, a blue-tongued skink and more* via wildlife educators and MODS’ Life Sciences staff. Meet animals that have survived for millions of years despite being very slow and learn about the puzzling sides of evolution and adaptation. Discover the difference between warm- and cold-blooded species, explore why some animals need less food than others and see the unique ways they hide from predators.

This educational exhibit looks at the different survival strategies of various species. How can slow and steady win the race? Does bigger always mean better? What animals benefit from being weak rather than strong? This exhibit looks at the advantages and disadvantages of these different traits.

This world class exhibit is produced by Little Ray’s Nature Exhibitions in collaboration with the Canadian Museum of Nature. It is locally sponsored by Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. Little Ray’s Nature Centres is the largest exotic animal rescue organization in Canada with educational programs reaching more than one million Canadians each year. Most of the animals in this exhibition are rescues.

Included with Museum admission.

Miami, FL – The second South Florida edition of the Festival of Colors (festivalofcolorsfl.com) is coming to central Miami at Peacock Park in Coconut Grove on Saturday, April 13.

After an inaugural colorful 2023 event attended by hundreds in Ft, Lauderdale, this marks the second local edition of the Festival of Colors USA. It’s been beloved by conscious partiers throughout the western US for nearly two decades (festivalofcolorsusa.com), and billed as “the world’s happiest transformational festival.”

Inspired by the Indian festival of Holi, the Festival of Colors will take place on Saturday, April 13 from 11 am to 4 pm, at Peacock Park, 2820 MacFarlane Rd., Coconut Grove, Miami, 33133.

The day promises to be a vibrant celebration of love, unity, and joy, and sober, uplifting fun, with plenty of cruelty-free cuisine, arts and crafts, mantra music, HOURLY COLOR THROWS — and free entry for kids under 12!

The Festival of Colors, also known as Holi, is a Hindu festival that has been celebrated in India and other parts of the world for centuries. It’s a time when people come together to celebrate the arrival of spring and the victory of good over evil. During the festival, participants throw colorful powder at each other, dance to live music, and enjoy delicious food.

This year’s Festival of Colors in Florida promises to be an unforgettable experience for all attendees. In addition to the colorful powder throwing and live music, there will also be yoga, meditation, and dance workshops throughout the day. There will also be plenty of food vendors, serving up delicious vegetarian and vegan options.

“We’re thrilled to bring the Festival of Colors to South Florida for the first time this year,” said festival organizer, Vasanti Dasi. “We want to create a space where people can come together, have fun, and celebrate the beauty of diversity and unity. This festival is a celebration of life, love, and happiness.”

Tickets for the Festival of Colors are available for purchase on the festival’s website, festivalofcolorsfl.com. Early bird tickets are on sale now, so make sure to grab yours before they sell out. Again, kids under 12 enter free, and there’s a special discount for students and veterans.

Use promo code BHAKTI at checkout to get presale entry for just $5 (with a bag of three colors) or $10 (with a bag of three colors and a vegetarian or vegan meal). Students and veterans can use the code to get presale entry with a bag of colors for $5.

Press passes are available by contacting press officer Radha dasi at radha@halftimeyoga.com, or calling 786-361-6417.

Shops at Merrick Park, known for its pristine outdoor shopping with lush green spaces and a fine collection of retailers in the heart of Coral Gables, will once again host the world-famous Los Trompos art exhibition created by Mexican designers Héctor Esrawe and Ignacio Cadena. This interactive vibrant outdoor display will make its return to South Florida, captivating audiences from February 13 through March 21 for one month only.

“Los Trompos,” which means “spinning tops” in Spanish, is a traveling exhibit that has been displayed in cities around the world, including Mexico City, Paris, and New York. The lively installation will feature eight larger-than-life, three-dimensional colorful spinning tops in a variety of colors and shapes that invite visitors to play and engage with the art. The art draws its inspiration from a toy that has been popular with children around the world since the dawn of time.

The colorful surfaces of each top are created, in part, by fabric woven in a traditional Mexican style. The fabric is stretched over the modules to seat several people at once. Functioning as both artwork and a rotating platform, each sculpture acts as a gathering place for relaxation, social interaction and entertainment.

This large-scale, artistic installation engages visitors in a way that is both meaningful and playful. By working together to create momentum, visitors can spin the tops on their bases.

Los Trompos was first commissioned by High Museum of Arts, Atlanta. Owners of Los Trompos are DTE Energy Beacon Park Foundation and The Downtown Detroit Partnership. The tour producer is Creos.

Los Trompos at Shops at Merrick Park is free to attend (no ticket required). Visitors are encouraged to take the tops for a spin, sit back and relax, or pose for the perfect photo opportunity. The exhibit is suitable for all ages.

Here for a limited time, discover and explore this immersive experience before it’s too late! For more information visit: https://www.shopsatmerrickpark.com/en/events/los-trompos.html

Think, construct, test and improve your engineering skills with MODS’ Engineering Weekends on Saturdays, from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., and on Sundays, from noon – 5 p.m.

Devise and manufacture various structures, learn about the first steps of engineering and discover what it takes to become an engineer. Tinker with tools and get hands-on with the building and design of a resilient city. For young engineers (ages 0-6), assemble structures with LEGO® bricks, DUPLO® blocks or MAGNA-TILES® and use various materials to experiment with erecting super tall towers.

Then, find inspiration at a showing of Cities of the Future, a captivating new IMAX® experience debuting in South Florida on February 16. This film, presented by MacGillivray Freeman Films and the American Society of Civil Engineers, unveils the groundbreaking innovations shaping our world. From solar energy beamed from space to flying cars, smart buildings and eco-friendly infrastructure, witness the transition to a sustainable future. Narrated by John Krasinski, the film takes you on a journey to cities like Amsterdam, Los Angeles and Singapore, showcasing real progress and the human ingenuity behind it. Join the movement towards a brighter, greener future.

The wave of excitement at MODS continues with Voyage to the Deep, a new traveling exhibit. “Seas” the day and embark on the legendary Nautilus submarine with Captain Nemo for an interactive journey of underwater exploration!

Experience South Florida’s award-winning attraction featuring 150,000 square feet of dynamic science exhibits, an outdoor science park, a live animal collection, a rotating schedule of science shows, learning labs, café, store and a grand atrium featuring the Great Gravity Clock, a 52-foot-tall kinetic energy sculpture; the largest clock in Florida. The showpiece of the museum since 1993, this unique timepiece is one of only three in the world.

Exhibits included with admission. Get tickets by visiting mods.org/tickets.
