Since its origins twelve years ago, the evolution of Cortadito has led it to become one of the torchbearers of a pop culture phenomenon that is two centuries strong. A traditional folk and acoustic band that focuses on performing one of the earliest styles of Cuban country music known as Son (pronounced sOwn), their sound can best be described as reminiscent of the famed Buena Vista Social Club.

This dynamic, Miami-based ensemble has been joined on stage by Grammy and Latin Grammy award-winning singer Aymeé Nuviola, world-renowned flutist Nestor Torres, and has performed with legendary member of Buena Vista Social Club, Eliades Ochoa. In October of 2022, the group was invited to perform at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.

Miami, FL – The second South Florida edition of the Festival of Colors (festivalofcolorsfl.com) is coming to central Miami at Peacock Park in Coconut Grove on Saturday, April 13.

After an inaugural colorful 2023 event attended by hundreds in Ft, Lauderdale, this marks the second local edition of the Festival of Colors USA. The Festival of Colors, also known as Holi, is a Hindu festival that has been celebrated in India and other parts of the world for centuries. It’s a time when people come together to celebrate the arrival of spring and the victory of good over evil. During the festival, participants throw colorful powder at each other, dance to live music, and enjoy delicious food.

This year’s Festival of Colors in Florida promises to be an unforgettable experience for all attendees. In addition to the colorful powder throwing and live music, there will also be yoga, meditation, and dance workshops throughout the day. There will also be plenty of food vendors, serving up delicious vegetarian and vegan options.

“We’re thrilled to bring the Festival of Colors to South Florida for the first time this year,” said festival organizer, Vasanti Dasi. “We want to create a space where people can come together, have fun, and celebrate the beauty of diversity and unity. CauseCamp Empowers Kids to be More Eco-Friendly
Registration Now Open for Spring Break

After a successful first season of Summer camps in 2023, Blue Missions, the non-profit in charge, was encouraged by parents and students alike to offer a similar eco-friendly action camp for Spring Break 2024. Camps in South Florida are a dime a dozen, but CauseCamp happens to be the only one that combines water-related adventures, ecological activities, carnival day, and community service hours.

If there is a 6th, 7th, or 8th grader in your life who enjoys the outdoors and active learning, then CauseCamp is for them. This eco activity and service camp will put students on action-packed, eye-opening field trips, offer interactive lessons, connect them with inspiring speakers, and take them snorkeling to a Coral Reef Restoration project, to name a few.

At CauseCamp, students can expect to kayak during a Mangrove cleanup and take part in an Everglades slog, which will allow them to explore the off-trail areas of the park and learn about its ecosystem. They’ll even have a floating classroom on Biscayne Bay to help students understand the worth of water and the urgent need to protect it. “Exposing our youth to sustainability projects empowers them to be knowledgeable, responsible, and active citizens of our community. We want to inspire our youth to find their drop and take action for a water-secure future” said Leslie Ramos, Chief Experience Officer at Blue Missions Group.

Offering four days of field trips and one day of carnival fun, CauseCamp promises to have a good mix of activities that students can enjoy while immersing themselves in nature, exploring new places, and making new friends.

About Paperwater
Paperwater is an avant-garde pop duo composed of Daygee Kwia and Eddy Samy. The group is based out of Miami, FL, and operates out of their multimedia compound Half/Full Creative. The duo met while in high school on the football team. Kwia was already producing and joined the hip-hop band After The Smoke in College at FAMU. Samy learned production through Kwia after college and began to develop his songwriting and vocal skills.

Paperwater released its first single in 2017 and began playing shows shortly after with acts such as Snakehips and Sango. Their most notable performances include openings for Flying Lotus, Mura Masa, Sohn, Lido, Virgil Abloh, and festival slots at Middlelands, III Points, and EDC. The duo’s production gradually developed a sound with the introduction of the Moog and vocal samples. The sound is a mix of electronic and hip-hop with hints of indie.

The duo is currently developing their full live band, which includes a drummer, bass guitar, and electronic guitar. On the production side, Paperwater is finalizing its debut album along with a second EP. Both projects will be released under their label Wet Paper Records.

With the help of the iNaturalist app, participants can identify as many species as possible throughout the park.

As you explore the park, you’ll have the chance to see a diverse range of plant and animal species that are native to the area. Some of the plants you might encounter include sea oats, beach sunflowers, and sea grapes, while some of the animals that call the park home include ospreys, great blue herons, and diamondback terrapins.

Using the iNaturalist app, you’ll be able to take photos of the plants and animals you come across and upload them to the app for identification. Not only will this help you learn more about the different species you’re seeing, but it will also contribute to a growing database of information about the flora and fauna of Virginia Key Beach Park.

Save the date of Saturday, July 22, to help The Salvation Army of Broward County “krush” poverty and homelessness in South Florida! Advance registration is open to walk, run and roll in The Salvation Army of Broward County’s sixth annual holiday-themed Kettle Krush 5K at Markham Park (16001 West State Road 84) in Sunrise) featuring returning special guest host WPLG Local 10’s Roy Ramos. For the past five years, over 500 participants have raised awareness and funds to “krush” homelessness and hunger in South Florida. The funds raised provide essential resources for impoverished families to get out of poverty and become financially stable. The Salvation Army serves over 50,000 Broward County residents, every year, and more than 70% of its funding comes directly from the community – individuals, groups and businesses.

The race is named after The Salvation Army’s iconic Red Kettles which are staffed during the holidays to collect funds for families in need. Each holiday season, The Salvation Army raises hundreds of thousands of dollars and distributes more than 7,000 gifts to families below the poverty line in Broward County.

The racecourse at Markham Park is sanctioned by the USATF, and the race will be timed by AccuChipUSA, Inc. Participants are encouraged to dress in holiday and Christmas attire and bring their festively adorned pets. Awards will be given to runners in “Top 3” categories, age groups and for the wackiest holiday attire for both themselves and their pets. The all-ages event will also include a kids’ zone with art, crafts and a bounce house.

Early registration fees are $10 for kids (ages up to 9), $25 for students (ages 10 – 17) and for seniors (60+) and $30 for registrants (18 and over). Team registration is $25 per person for teams of five or more. A free commemorative race t-shirt will be given to all registrants. Markham Park entry fee also will be waived for all Kettle Krush 5K participants. Parking will be complimentary and available directly across from the Runner’s Pavilion area.

The most exciting and innovative Black voices in Broward County take center stage when the Broward Center for the Performing Arts presents the second annual Rhythm by the River: A Festival Celebrating Black Voices at Esplanade Park in downtown Fort Lauderdale.

The free event features live music, dance, drama and spoken word poetry performances as well as interactive events for the entire family.

On the main stage, The Smoogies kick off the afternoon’s music lineup with a blend of jazz, funk and R&B sounds and influences that will make people feel good while listening. Miami-born Gia Wyre, also known as “Songbird,” uplifts the audience with her voice and soul-stirring gospel, R&B and soul repertoire. Free family fun is back on-track at Tri-Rail’s rescheduled “Rail Fun Day” on Saturday, March 4, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport Station at Dania Beach (500 Gulf Stream Way). Hay Maze Miami’s last Saturday of the pop event will be a treat you won’t want to miss out on. To kickoff the day there will be a fitness class starting at 10:30a-11:30a, “Fall Into Dance” hosted by ShoBiz Fit. Shops at Merrick Park, Coral Gables’ pristine destination for fine shopping and dining, will present “Back to Tradition,” its 19th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, sponsored by Nicklaus Children’s Hospital and Belmont Village Senior Living, on Thursday, November 17, at 6 p.m. One of the largest tree lighting ceremonies and holiday celebrations in South Florida, the event will include the 50-foot tree-lighting and a live performance by South Florida’s own Camie Liz. The retail destination will transform into a winter wonderland with a live performance by award-winning singer Camie Liz who will serenade attendees with holiday favorites. House of Horror Haunted Carnival (HOH) has been scaring the living daylights out of the so-called unafraid. With four new haunted house experiences, a midway filled with unlimited carnival rides, food, and games, caretakers also vow to spook unsuspecting victims with every turn on their new Fireball Rollercoaster.

Beginning September 29 at 6PM, people can take their chances working their way through four terrifyingly, haunted experiences inside an abandoned department store at Miami International Mall. The following haunted experiences have been completely re-done to maximize their scare factor:

• The Silent Mall – Shhh….This is where Misshhhell will unleash her own level of “hell”. Try and stay quiet, if you dare.
• DrownTown – The undead are overflowing at this abandoned town seeking their revenge. Be quick about it, or risk becoming a permanent resident.
• Insanitorium – If by now your nerves are shot, don’t worry. Former patients have taken over the treatment of nervous breakdowns. Do check in. No health insurance required.
• Scare X Studios – Cleared of “almost” all paranormal activity, this immersive experience is where gaming and imagination takes center stage.

For 20 years, Miami International Mall has served as the ideal spot for this spooky, month-long adventure. Those fun-filled nights only get better on the HOH midway where a ticket to the haunted experiences also gives family and friends access to unlimited carnival rides and games. It’s also where overindulgence is highly encouraged given the large assortment of treats and carnival foods. Just be sure to rally enough courage to ride The Fireball Rollercoaster, which is a first this year.

Tickets are currently on sale for House of Horror Haunted Carnival at Miami International Mall. Doors open on September 29 and remain open every Tuesday through Sunday, all the way to Monday, October 31. HOH plans to incorporate special themed nights, including an adult Costume Contest on Halloween night, so be sure to follow them on social media for those drop dates!

In an effort to educate voters and encourage them to register to vote, CityPlace Doral has partnered with Univision and UnidosUS to host voter registration drives. The non-partisan voter registration drives will take place at CityPlace Doral’s fountain plaza on select Saturdays and Sundays in Aug., Sept. and Oct. ahead of the Nov. 8 election. The deadline to register to vote in the General Election is Oct. 11.

Join us under August’s Full Moon named after the Sturgeon fish. It’s a popular time for Sturgeon to be caught in the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain. Though there were once plenty of Sturgeon in the Great Lakes, and many different varieties, they’re much more rare now. However, their legend lives on through this summer moon.

This summer Moon is in the sign of Aquarius and has a history rooted in nature, dating back to Native American legends from years gone by. This moon also signals that it’s a time for appreciation and gratitude for what you have and where you’ve come from.

Attendees can determine where they are at with their goals, what they want to gather more of, and what they are ready to let go of to prepare for the new moon cycle. An option for those (both in the region and beyond) who wish to participate virtually at home is also available. This all-ages event is designed to raise awareness and funds for families in need. For the past four years, nearly 400 participants have raised awareness and funds to “krush” homelessness and hunger in South Florida. The funds raised support the work of The Salvation Army of Broward County, which provides essential resources for community members in need to get out of poverty and become financially stable. The Salvation Army serves over 50,000 Broward County residents, every year, and more than 70% of its funding comes directly from the community – individuals, groups and businesses.

The race is named after The Salvation Army’s iconic Red Kettles which are staffed during the holidays to collect funds for families in need. Each holiday season, The Salvation Army raises hundreds of thousands of dollars and distributes more than 7,000 gifts to families below the poverty line in Broward County.

The racecourse at Markham Park is sanctioned by the USATF, and the race will be timed by AccuChipUSA, Inc. Awards will be given to runners in “Top 3” categories and age groups. A FREE commemorative race t-shirt will be given to all registrants.

The Salvation Army of Broward County’s Kettle Krush 5K Participants are encouraged to dress in holiday and Christmas attire. Registration fees are $10 for kids (ages 2 – 8), $25 for students (18 and under) and seniors (60+) and $30 for registrants (19 and over). Team registration is $25 per person for teams of five or more. Markham Park entry fee will be waived for all Kettle Krush 5K participants. Parking will also be FREE and available directly across from the Runner’s Pavilion area.

South Florida Organizations Partner in Unity
New Alliance Invites Public to Join the Movement

With an eye toward inspiring unity and cooperation across the public, MCCJ met with South Florida community leaders and organizations to form an alliance that will embody the belief that we’re better off united, regardless of race, color, religion, origin, and political affiliation. Yearning for the days when people had constructive conversations despite having differences and determined to bring those days back to vibrant life, this newly formed alliance has planned a march for May 15, 2022, at 3PM in Downtown Miami, and it is inviting the community to join in their efforts.

The main thrust of “We Are United” is to show that we are proud of and united in our differences and what makes us unique; that we wish to operate with compassion, care towards one another, and remain supportive of each other with respect and in celebration of these differences. It aims to tackle hate and divisiveness, by clearly demonstrating that people are better off united. Organizers plan to make this march an annual event. Over ten entities, including the Office of Mayor Danielle Levine Cava are encouraging additional organizations to join the alliance in hopes of repairing the currently frayed social fabric. “Sadly, we’re at the point where almost anything can turn into a topic of division, and it’s only getting worse,” states Matt Anderson, MCCJ executive director. “We profoundly believe every person has the right to live in dignity and enjoy respect, regardless of race, gender, faith, ethnicity, national origin, age, sexual orientation, physical or mental ability or socioeconomic status. For that reason, we aspire to make Miami a model of intercultural understanding.”

On May 15th, MCCJ and this newly formed alliance will assemble at The Freedom Tower at 3:00PM. The march will officially begin at 3:45PM. People are expected to make it The Underline (right near Brickell station) by 4:40PM. At that point, there will be a performance by Guitars Over Guns followed by speeches from key figures. The event ends at 6PM.
