About The Leah Arts District
Hialeah’s Southeastern industrial corridor rose to prominence during the 1980s as one of the largest and busiest areas of production and manufacturing in Florida. As a result of modernization combined with the effects of outsourcing, the uses that were once prevalent in the area dissipated and this particular area was all but abandoned. Since that time, a medley of different uses has been incorporated into the area including a heavy presence of some of Miami-Dade County’s most prolific thrift stores. These thrift stores have been instrumental in introducing Hialeah to an entire generation of antique lovers and artists.

The Hialeah Artist Live/Work Overlay District, also known as The Leah Arts District, enjoys a strategic proximity to the newly proposed Hialeah Market Station development project, Miami’s artistic hubs, and other destination areas within Miami-Dade County. Because of it’s location and highly affordable price per square footage, Hialeah’s new Artist Live / Work District is in a position to play a vital and important role in the artistic and cultural development of not only Hialeah, but the entire South Florida community. Follow @leahartsdistrict on Instagram for updates.

Photographs of Historic Little Farm House on 3/8/15

Historic Little Farm House on Sunday, March 8, 2105.

“Heralded by Miami historians and design enthusiasts alike, (formerly known as The Magic City Farm) is, by any measure, a unique place. Built in the 1920’s, located on a bend of the Little River section of the Miami River on the edge of Little Haiti, is an eclectic one-acre oasis consisting of a 1,200 square foot farm house, two story boathouse and six colorful cottages featuring rustic furnishings – all made out of Dade County pine and rescued from a trailer park down the road.”

“A throw back in time, wildlife freely roam on or about the property, from the manatees that drift by slowly on the river close to the three hundred foot sea wall, to the ducks, chickens and iguanas that can be seen as they wander about on the lush grounds, a large area planted with native and exotic trees. Each of the eight structures on the property is charming in its own way, some painted in cheerful Caribbean colors, others in varying tones of white.  The cabins, some of which have kitchens and bathrooms, and the boathouse, which has both, have been leased for short stays.”

The property (281 N.E. 84 Street, Miami, Florida 33138) has been featured in photo and film shoots and is available for events. For bookings, please contact the new owner, Gabriella von Rosen at info@miamifarmhouse.com.

Photographs of The Record Man World Premiere at the Miami Dade College’s Miami International Film Festival on 3/10/15

The Record Man World Premiere at the Miami Dade College’s Miami International Film Festival on Tuesday, March 10, 2015.

Before there was a music business there was Henry Stone, who shaped and catapulted the sound of 1970s Miami into the mainstream with his unique hit-breaking label TK Records and affiliates. Stone started out in the music distribution business which led him to establish his own independent music label which he ran from a warehouse in Hialeah.

TK Record’s first big international hit was George McCrae’s Rock Your Baby in 1974, one of the songs credited to starting the disco revolution. The hits kept coming and by the end of the 1970s the label had several #1 songs in the Billboard Top 100 chart like Get Down Tonight and That’s The Way (I Like It) by KC and the Sunshine Band and Anita Ward’s Ring My Bell. Not long after the disco era was over TK Records went bankrupt, but Stone still had one last piece to add to the Miami music sound puzzle when he helped release what would become the first million seller freestyle hit record Fascinated by Company B and the rest is legit Miami music history.– Andres Castillo

Audrey Love Gallery: The Reunion

“The Bakehouse Art Complex opened in 1987 in the former Art Deco American Bakeries Company building in today’s Wynwood Arts District, by a group of artists relocating from Coconut Grove. These artists founded the nonprofit Bakehouse Art Complex and repurposed the industrial building into working studios and galleries, ensuring a permanent venue for local artists to explore their creativity.

This exhibition celebrates the 29-year history of the Bakehouse, which has seen over one thousand resident artists and continued success as a stakeholder in the ever-growing Miami arts environment. The selection of artists included in the 2,600 square-foot Audrey Love Gallery show reflects the 29-year history of the Bakehouse and its role as an incubator for art careers – and the rise of the visual arts – in Miami over the years. Exhibition highlights include an opening reception, innovative art talk-concert hybrid presented in partnership with IlluminArts, a puppetry master class with Pablo Cano, and a closing reception. PRESS RELEASE
Major Collectors from New York, Miami and Abroad Make Important Acquisitions

Art Wynwood, the annual Presidents Day Weekend art fair, presented over 60 galleries, from 9 countries representing over 25 cities, featured a wide breadth of quality works from both established and mid-career cutting edge artists. The Fourth Edition reported record attendance, attracting over 35,000 enthusiasts and some of the world’s most prominent collectors; as well as a strong show of patrons from the international clientele in town for the Yacht & Brokerage Show. Art Wynwood has secured its position as the most important contemporary art fair in the southeast during the winter months by offering the most discerning international collectors, art enthusiasts and seasoned cultural travelers the best opportunity to discover, explore and collect some of the most significant art works of our time.

“The City of Miami and The Wynwood Arts District continues to deliver for our participating dealers while quenching the thirst of an active international art collecting community who are visiting or residing in South Florida each winter,” said Nick Korniloff, Executive VP of Art Miami LLC. “This past weekend proved that Miami continues to develop as a serious cultural destination outside the month of December”

“For the fourth edition of Art Wynwood, the enthusiasm, focus and momentum of our local, regional and international galleries has made the fair an exceptional success,” said Grela Orihuela, Art Wynwood Fair Director. “Our clear determination was to continue to grow and shape this fair into an event embodying the tremendous art character and talent of its Miami roots.”

Christie’s International Real Estate hosted an interactive booth at the entrance of Art Wynwood, exhibiting international luxury residential real estate offerings, and a new addition to the fair was a special exhibition titled SOLO Miami where a selection of local galleries, including Emerson Dorsch, GUCCIVUITTON, Primary, Fredric Snitzer Gallery and Spinello Projects, exhibited side-by-side to present solo exhibitions premiering exciting new work by consequential local artists.

“Major collectors like Mera Rubell, Beth Rudin DeWoody, Jorge Perez and Jessica Goldman came through the fair. We are thrilled that Susan and Michael Hort have continued to support Farley Aguilar with their acquisition of Mourning, one of the three large oil on canvas painting that were featured in Spinello’s booth. Beth DeWoody also acquired a large oil painting, Patriarchy, as well as several ink on mylar paintings. In total, we placed 20 paintings – sold out!” said gallery owner Anthony Spinello. “Judging from the packed aisles, there is definitely an audience and most importantly people are buying.”

Famed gallery owner Fredric Snitzer, who also participated in the SOLO Miami exhibition said, “The reason I was happy to be a part of the fair this year was in the choice they made of selecting a few galleries from the community and having each focus on showing a Miami artist. It gives a snapshot and cross section of what’s happening here in a brief moment.” Other new exhibitions this year included, “La Habana in Waiting,” a solo exhibition by New York-based Chinese artist, Quentin Shih, in collaboration with participating gallery ART LEXÏNG. In his most recent series, “La Habana in Waiting,” Shih explores the tensions and melancholy in Cuban citizens sitting for an artist’s lens; the polarities between expressive individuals struggling for identity within a Communist regime. The fair continued its collaboration with Cash, Cans & Candy, an international festival of street art from Vienna, Austria, presented by Galerie Ernst Hilger. Curator Katrin- Sophie Dworczak of Cash, Cans & Candy lined up famed street artist, Boicut, to create original works onsite at the fair. Esteemed gallery owner, Bernice Steinbaum, presented a design installation by young artists, 10 percent of the proceeds of her sales from special project “Art in the Natural World and Cultured Settings” will go to the Museum of Art and Design in the Freedom Tower. Artists sold at her project included Enrique Gomez de Molina, Aurora Molina and Carrie Sieh among others. Jessica Goldman Srebnick, CEO of Goldman Properties, aligned once again with the fair and sponsored the Wynwood Walls Go! Shop pop up on-site at the Art Wynwood Pavilion. The Go! Shop invited the public to shop the Walls, through a curated collection of limited art editions, inspired and created by the artists of Wynwood Walls.

Vagabond Restaurant and Bar soft opening in the new renovated Vagabond Hotel on Monday, January 12, 2105. The Vagabond Hotel is located in the MiMo District at 7301 Biscayne Blvd. We started out with the peanuts and chapulines with Szechuan peppercorn and lime and I could not stop eating them so yummy.  Then we had the zucchini salad with pistachio, tarragon and pipian sauce.  The heirloom tomato fattoush salad with black sesame, sheep’s milk feta and black radish.  The crispy fingerling potatoes with smoked paprika and sherry vinegar was so good. Next we tried the roasted baby carrots with mole, hazelnut, yogurt and za’atar and the sweetbread milanesa with swiss, country ham vinaigrette and mustard dill and it was delicious.   Next on the list was the iberico skirt steak and it was cooked and seasoned perfectly along with the  sweet and sour sun shrimp both were amazing.  Then we had the buttermilk fried quail. We made it to the desserts and my favorite was the pistachio cake it was so amazing it is a must try.

PRESS RELEASE
It’s A Wrap! Miami International Film Festival’s MIFFecito, A Program Of Miami Dade College’s MDCulture,
Ends With Sold Out Screenings, Incredible Performances and Pomp

4-Day Mini Festival Run Gave Miami A Taste Of MiamiFF 2015’s Caliber Of Incredible International Programming

Opening Night Began With Director Ernesto Daranas’ Smash Hit BEHAVIOR (CONDUCTA), Continued In Spectacular Fashion at Neo-Cuban Hotspot Ball & Chain

Master Class Discussions On The Art Of Film Curation, Plus Impact of Film On Anti-Bullying Efforts, Got Audiences Thinking

MIAMI, FL – Local film lovers packed Miami Dade College’s Tower Theater this past weekend for the joyous new MIFFecito, the mid-season cinematic appetizer to 2015’s 32nd Miami International Film Festival’s (MiamiFF’s) main course taking place March 6-15, 2015. Festival organizers proclaimed the 4-day special prelude event to be successful beyond their expectations, with nonstop sold-out film screenings, exuberant visiting artists, and snazzy après-screening soirees. All MIFFecito screenings at the Tower Theater were generously presented by Viendomovies.

A jubilant MiamiFF Executive Director Jaie Laplante said, “Judging by the smile count, this autumnal run of MIFFecito was a programming initiative that truly paid off. It affirmed that the opportunity to deeply immerse one’s self in a rich, meaningful selection of superb new international cinema that is as yet undistributed in this country is profoundly desired. We’re thrilled and filled with anticipation for March!”

MIFFecito opened on Thursday, October 16th with Ernesto Daranas, the director of the sold out Opening Night film Behavior (Conducta), actor Hector Noas and the film’s art director Erick Grass, arriving for the film’s much anticipated red carpet premiere. Audiences had the pleasure of indulging in Latin treats from Tinta y Café’s pop-up café decorated with Las Tias furnishings in place just for MIFFecito. An electric question and answer session with the artists concluded the emotional Florida premiere of Behavior, and the festivities continued across the street at just-opened Ball & Chain, Little Havana’s retro, neo-Cuban hotspot which hosted MIFFecito’s Opening Night Party. Guests celebrated the electric night of live afro-Cuban sounds, gourmet Cuban tapas, and flowing libations from sponsors Bombay Sapphire and Stella Artois.

Friday night, MIFFecito kicked into full premiere gear, showcasing international hits by directors including Paco León with the North American premiere of Carmina and Amen (Spain),Matías Rojas Valencia withRoot (Chile),and director Sydney Sibilia’s I Can Quit Whenever I Want (Italy). Each filled-to-capacity premiere screened to laughing or deeply moved audiences.

Saturday afternoon, the festival changed gears to present an outstanding educational opportunity for the special master class The Art of Curation, presented by MiamiFF’s programming guru Thom Powers. Powers walked fascinated attendees through a process of engagement with audiences that goes far beyond simply choosing which movies to show. An intense discussion of connecting documentary cinema (Powers’ specialty) and audiences was opened up with the entire audience participating, with special discussion of Laura Poitras’ upcoming Citizenfour film used as a prime case study.

Saturday night, the evening crowds continued and the glamour unleashed, with cameras flashing as Mariana Chenillo, the director of Paradise (Mexico), and Roberto Sanchez, the lead actor of Lake Los Angeles (USA), appeared for the Florida premieres of their respective films. Also premiering that evening was Vara: A Blessing, directed by Bhutanese lama Khyentse Norbu, where guests were pleasantly surprised with an enchanting Bollywood dance team performance by Belly Motions.

Sunday afternoon, Moisés Kaufman, the celebrated director of The Laramie Project, was in attendance along with special guest moderator Dennis Scholl, Vice President of Arts for The Knight Foundation, for a very special retrospective screening of Kaufman’s groundbreaking film. Afterwards, an impassioned conversation ensued regarding the positive impact the film (and the original theater production) have had over the years since its 2002 debut. Kaufman took the opportunity to announce that, 23 years after forming his internationally celebrated Tectonic Theater Project in New York City, he will be forming a new Miami-based theater company with partners Gary Ressler and Michel Hausmann, in 2015.

The festival closed Sunday night with the East Coast U.S. premiere screening of director Emilio Martínez-Lázaro’s massive smash Spanish Affair (Ocho apellidos vascos), the all-time highest-grossing domestic film at the Spanish box office. Spanish Affair screened three times throughout MIFFecito, and every screening was sold out.

For MiamiFF membership opportunities or more information, please visit www.miamifilmfestival.com or call 305-237-FILM(3456). The Festival is the only major film festival event housed within a college or university.

Convoluted Shape by Jamilah Sabur is in the Swenson Gallery from September 10 – October 18. “This exhibition studies the interdisciplinary uses of the body as a vehicle for expression. Jamilah Sabur opens the exhibition on September 12th with a multi-channel video installation and performance encompassing the interplay of inwardness and the secondariness of the audience through movement, concealment, obstacles and physical limitations as well as spontaneous and imperfect, sometimes comic, unrehearsed movements. The results illustrate the perverse rule the artist seems to have discovered: the less she can see, the more we, an audience, look.”

The Bakehouse Art Complex Mission:
“Enable and encourage artistic creativity through diversity and collaboration.  By providing affordable studio spaces for juried emerging and mid-career artists
Providing exhibition opportunities, educational and artist advancement programming, and common workshop spaces. Serve as a cultural hub providing a venue for performance and critical thought in Miami’s historic art deco bakery”

Today in addition to being Eleazar’s personal art studio, we host local talents and leaders who need a professional environment to showcase, educate, and enrich the community at large.
