Island City Stage will hold a special “Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Book?!” free interactive panel discussion on April 18 at 4 p.m., following the 2 p.m. matinee performance of Everything Beautiful Happens at Night.

Emmy Award-winning journalist and theatermaker Ariel Cipolla will lead a timely and thought-provoking discussion exploring the vital role of LGBTQ+ storytelling in children’s literature. Through personal insights and candid dialogue with acclaimed author Rob Sanders, director of KidLit for the Seymour Agency Joyce Sweeney, and children’s picture book author and editor Matt Tesoriero, theatre-goers will learn about the growing wave of book bans and the cultural debate shaping today’s literary landscape and consider who gets to tell stories, why they matter, and what’s at stake for the next generation. The discussion is free to attend.

Audiences and critics are enchanted by Island City Stage’s East Coast premiere of Everything Beautiful Happens at Night, by Ted Malawer (Red, White, & Royal Blue), and directed by Bruce Linser, a tender, funny, and moving story about the life you have, the life you want, and who stays when the world gets quiet.

The show focuses on Ezra, a closeted children’s book author and Nancy, his fiercely loyal editor. Their creative partnership has shaped stories that delight generations. But when writer’s block pushes Ezra far past deadlines to deliver his latest book, a new voice enters the conversation and begins to change Ezra’s life, inspiring a controversial ending to Chipmunk and Squirrel, and testing the limits of his friendship with Nancy.

Everything Beautiful Happens at Night features an esteemed and talented cast including Carbonell award-nominated Christopher Dreeson as Ezra, multi-Carbonell and Silver Palm award-winner Laura Turnbull as Nancy, and rising star Aidan Paul as Jake. The thoughtful, charming illustrations that serve as the play’s backdrop were created by Bong Redila, an award-winning Filipino American illustrator and author based in Miami.

Everything Beautiful Happens at Night co-producers are Russell Vance, Michael Mullins and Terry Gaw; Lights and Sound Sponsor is Scott Bennett; Talent Sponsors are Paul Rolli & Bennett Quade and Robert Lee; Costume Sponsors are Rita Cassady and John Colemen; Set Sponsors are Margie & Trevor Fried; and Illustrations Sponsor is DC Allen & Ken Flick No Gay Hate Fund at Our Fund. Voices’ Annual Soaring for Children Gala, Capes & Courage, will take place on Saturday, April 18, at The Venue in Wilton Manors.

The Soaring for Children Gala marks a new chapter for Voices as it elevates the signature annual event in honor of the organization’s 15th anniversary. “I Wonder… What It Would Be Like to Record in a Studio?” 4/18/26

“I Wonder… What It Would Be Like to Record in a Studio?”
Saturday, 04/18/2026-, 11:00 am-01:30 pm
Gwen Cherry Park
7090 NW 22nd Avenue,
Miami, Florida, 33147
Website
Cost: 50.00

The “I Wonder… What It Would Be Like to Record in a Studio?” experience is an immersive, hands-on journey into the world of music creation, designed specifically for adults who want to explore something new, reconnect with their creative instincts, and build confidence in a supportive environment. Whether you once loved music but drifted away from it, or you have never stepped inside a studio before, this program meets you exactly where you are.

During this immersive session, participants will step into a professional studio environment and experience the collaborative magic of making music together. Guided by professional musician-mentors from Guitars Over Guns, you’ll move through the creative process from idea to recorded sound — all within a welcoming and energizing setting.

Throughout the experience, you will:

Collaboratively co-write a chorus and bring it to life through your collective voice
Experiment with rhythm, melody, and harmony in small, guided instrumental groups
Learn the basics of studio recording and music production
Experience the thrill of hearing a live mix of the song you created together by the end of the session
No prior musical experience is required. There are no auditions, no expectations, and no pressure to “get it right.” This is not about technical perfection — it’s about participation, presence, and possibility.

By the end of the workshop, you won’t just walk away having recorded a song. You’ll leave with a renewed sense of creative confidence, and the empowering realization that you are capable of more than you imagined.

Why It Matters
At the heart of the I Wonder…? Workshop Series is a simple but powerful belief: creativity is not reserved for a talented few, it belongs to all of us. Yet somewhere along the way, many adults stop raising their hands, stop experimenting, stop asking, “What if I tried?”

In alignment with our broader mission to reignite creativity as an essential human skill, this workshop goes beyond simply learning about music. It demonstrates how creative exploration strengthens problem-solving, collaboration, communication, and personal confidence. When adults allow themselves to be beginners again — to experiment without fear of judgment — they unlock the very qualities that fuel innovation in every area of life.

The Coconut Grove Theatre Festival (CGTFest) returns April 16–19, 2026, bringing four days of original new plays, both emerging and award-winning voices, and community-driven theatre back to its historic Miami home.

Following a successful inaugural year that featured eight plays, 16 of Miami’s leading and emerging theatre creatives, 42 actors from across South Florida, and more than 700 audience members, CGTFest returns in 2026 with expanded programming and renewed ambition.

What made CGTFest 2025 such a success was the incredible excitement and support, both from our artists and partners, and also from our audience, which ranged from first-time theatregoers to long-time arts supporters. Their enthusiasm and engagement is why CGTFest can return this year to bring even more exciting stories to life for an expanded audience of Grovites, South Floridians, and for the first time, the youngest of theatre fans for a CGTFest children’s matinee,” said William Hector, Founder and Artistic Director of CGTFest.

This year, CGTFest expands its audience by introducing a Children’s Matinee for the first time, featuring two original plays written by leading Miami dramatists Vanessa Garcia and Brandon Urrutia. Designed to welcome young theatre fans and families into the Festival experience, the productions will incorporate music and puppetry to create an engaging and imaginative experience for children.

From writer Ted Malawer (Red, White, & Royal Blue), Carbonell and Silver Palm Award-winning director Bruce Linser, and featuring stunning illustrations by multi-award-winning artist Bong Redila, Everything Beautiful Happens at Night is a tender, funny, and moving story about the life you have, the life you want, and who stays when the world gets quiet. Tickets are on sale now for Island City Stage’s East Coast premiere of the play which runs April 2- 26.

Ezra is a closeted children’s book author. Nancy is his fiercely loyal editor.

As a former literary agent for children’s book authors, then as an editor of children’s books, and ultimately as a children’s book author and novelist, himself, Ted Malawer has spun a tale close to home. Everything Beautiful Happens at Night was partially inspired by his childhood LGBTQ author heroes Maurice Sendak (“Where the Wild Things Are”) and Arnold Lobel (“Frog and Toad” books). The play held its world premiere at Capital Stage in Sacramento, California, in early 2025 and its second U.S. staging brings it to the award-winning Island City Stage in Wilton Manors, Florida.

Island City Stage’s production of Everything Beautiful Happens at Night, directed by Linser, stars Christopher Dreeson as Ezra, Laura Turnbull as Nancy, and Aidan Paul as Jake.

Additional funding is provided by the following: The Our Fund Foundation, The Schubert Foundation Inc., the SHS Foundation, the Warten Foundation, and OutClique.

Individual show tickets start at $45. A Mimosa Sunday performance sponsored by John Fomook and Charles Lee will take place on April 12. A special Women’s Night at the Theatre sponsored by Barbara Signer and Fran Epstein will take place on April 24. The show runs for one hour and 40 minutes with no intermission.

Island City Stage believes that theatre should belong to the next generation of storytellers, artists, and audiences. Its new “30 Under 30” initiative invites patrons ages 18–29 to experience award-winning, professional theatre for just $30 per ticket (plus taxes & fees; subject to availability on Thursday and Friday evenings and Saturday matinees). Limit one ticket per patron per production. A government-issued photo ID will be required at will call. When ordering online, use discount code “30U30.”
