Sometimes being slow, small or weak can have its advantages in Survival of the Slowest, the newest summer traveling exhibit presented by Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, running June 7 through September 5, at the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS). Guests will get an in-depth look at the often-overlooked species that evolved to slow down as part of their survival strategy in a world where large, strong and fast animals are often at the top of the food chain.

The exhibit will feature 14 habitats with live animals (17 species) and plants. Guests will get an up-close look at wildlife with daily presentations featuring a sloth, a tarantula, tortoises, a hedgehog, a blue-tongued skink and more* via wildlife educators and MODS’ Life Sciences staff. Meet animals that have survived for millions of years despite being very slow and learn about the puzzling sides of evolution and adaptation. Discover the difference between warm- and cold-blooded species, explore why some animals need less food than others and see the unique ways they hide from predators.

This educational exhibit looks at the different survival strategies of various species. How can slow and steady win the race? Does bigger always mean better? What animals benefit from being weak rather than strong? This exhibit looks at the advantages and disadvantages of these different traits.

This world class exhibit is produced by Little Ray’s Nature Exhibitions in collaboration with the Canadian Museum of Nature. It is locally sponsored by Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. Little Ray’s Nature Centres is the largest exotic animal rescue organization in Canada with educational programs reaching more than one million Canadians each year. Most of the animals in this exhibition are rescues.

Included with Museum admission.

These local stars are here to bring down the house with their top-tier material, setting the stage for an unforgettable night of laughs. The showcase comedians will then host (and roast) the second portion of the show…

The Open Mic: After the showcase, the stage opens up to anyone feeling brave enough to share their comedy with the world. Whether you’re polishing your set or stepping into the spotlight for the first time, this is your chance to shine. Good joke? Expect roaring applause. Bad joke? Well, get ready for a roast that’s all in good fun.

Why Attend?
Laughter Guaranteed: With a mix of showcase and open mic, the laughs never stop.
Discover New Talent: Be the first to cheer (or roast) the up-and-coming comedians of Miami.
Luxurious Venue: Enjoy top-tier hospitality and a sophisticated atmosphere at MODE.
Weekly Tradition: Make your Thursdays unforgettable with comedy, connections, and MODE’s unmatched experience.
Don’t miss out on this unique comedy experience where laughs meet luxury. Reserve your spot now and join us at MODE for “The Killing Joke Mode Miami Comedy Night.” Let’s turn Thursday into the funniest night of the week, together.

About Harden Project Duo

The Harden Project consists of vocalist Ja’Nia Harden and keyboardist John Harden II. Their influences include Bobby McFerrin, Dinah Washington, Al Jarreau, Jimmy Smith, Robert Glasper, Soulive, and Bobby Floyd. The couple blends their influences and life experiences to create soulful groovy sometimes enchanting compositions. They are not afraid of being transparent and open while performing. The goal of the project is to bring soul-stirring, emotion-provoking, life-influenced music to the world and features fusion-based music of all genres, heavily influenced by jazz, social music, and soul.

The Historical Legacy of Juneteenth

On “Freedom’s Eve,” or the eve of January 1, 1863, the first Watch Night services took place. On that night, enslaved and free African Americans gathered in churches and private homes all across the country awaiting news that the Emancipation Proclamation had taken effect. At the stroke of midnight, prayers were answered as all enslaved people in the Confederate States were declared legally free. Union soldiers, many of whom were black, marched onto plantations and across cities in the South reading small copies of the Emancipation Proclamation and spreading the news of freedom in Confederate States. Only through the Thirteenth Amendment did emancipation end slavery throughout the United States. Not everyone in Confederate territory would immediately be free. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was made effective in 1863, it could not be implemented in places still under Confederate control. As a result, in the westernmost Confederate state of Texas, enslaved people would not be free until much later. Freedom finally came on June 19, 1865, when some 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas. The army announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state, were free by executive decree. This day came to be known as “Juneteenth,” by the newly freed people in Texas. Juneteenth marks our country’s second independence day. Although it has long been celebrated in the African American community, this monumental event remains largely unknown to most Americans. About The Museum

Founded by artists in 1950 as the Art Guild of Boca Raton, the Boca Raton Museum of Art has evolved into a vital cultural resource. The Museum’s original building on Palmetto Park Road now serves as the Museum’s Art School, nestled within a 3-acre sculpture park. In 2001, the Museum was provided land in Mizner Park, a mixed-use area in downtown Boca Raton. Designed by Donald Singer, the current Museum facility, with its bold volumes and emblematic design, reflects the spirit of Addison Mizner’s Mediterranean Revival architecture of the 1920s that provided an indelible mark on Boca Raton. Located in Palm Beach County, the Museum attracts visitors from a wide range of regions, with nearly 50% being cultural tourists from drive markets or out-of-state, underscoring the appeal of its reputation, quality of programs, and supporting the Museum’s mission to be a vital cultural resource dedicated to the creative life.

The exhibition bridges the past and present, delving into the experience of Black people in Overtown, a Miami neighborhood that went from a thriving cultural and commercial hub for Black people to a subject of gentrification, systemic racism, and mass displacement.

First, watch “Wade in the Water,” which sets the tone for the discussion around the visual exploration of Black folk’s relationship to water and Calida Rawles’s envisioning of water as a space for Black healing. Then, enjoy a conversation between the artist, filmmaker Cathleen Dean, and Overtown Youth Center CEO Tina Brown, moderated by writer and researcher Nadege Green.

Prior to the conversation, view the new exhibition in the galleries and celebrate on the terrace from 5–7pm with happy hour and live jazz in celebration of the rich musical roots of our neighbors in Overtown.

Based on the true story of Kemba Smith, a college student falls in love with a man, only to learn he is a drug kingpin who leads her down a path of abuse and manipulation, placing her in the middle of the government’s “war on drugs,” and ultimately landing her in federal prison.

The viewer cannot be faulted for wondering how such a fateful meeting of two young people could end up in such a calamitous collision. Director Kelley Kali lays it out step by step with archival footage, well written scenes exposing the myriad of political errors and a brilliant cast that pulls it all together. Kudos to Nesta Cooper in the title role. Stick around for the closing credits and meet onscreen the people who lived this story.

Director: Kelley is a LA native, Howard University and University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts alumna. Island City Stage Presents Skintight by Joshua Harmon 5/30/24

Island City Stage Presents Skintight by Joshua Harmon

Island City Stage

Wilton Manors, Florida, 33305

Cost: $40 – $55

Beauty isn’t everything. Why is it the only thing? Delve into the neurotic New York family dynamic of Island City Stage’s newest comedy, Skintight by Joshua Harmon, running May 30 through June 23.

Initially premiering Off-Broadway in 2018 at the Roundabout Theater in New York City, Skintight examines the nature of love, the power of attraction, and the ways in which a superficial culture persists in teaching its children that all that matters is what’s on the inside.

Reeling from her ex-husband’s engagement to a much younger woman, Jodi Isaac turns to her famous fashion-designer dad for support. Instead, she finds him wrapped-up in his West Village townhouse with Trey. Who’s 20. And not necessarily gay. But probably an adult film star. At least, according to Jodi’s son. Who’s also 20. And definitely gay.

Playwright Joshua Harmon brings neurotic family drama and comedy to the forefront as father and daughter contend with the age-old questions of how to age gracefully in a world obsessed with youth and where love fits into it all.

Harmon’s other plays include Bad Jews, Significant Other, Admissions, and Prayer for the French Republic. He and Sarah Silverman co-wrote the libretto for The Bedwetter based on her memoir. His plays have been produced on Broadway and the West End; off-Broadway at Roundabout Theatre Company, Lincoln Center Theater, Manhattan Theater Club and Atlantic Theater Company; across the country at Geffen Playhouse, Speakeasy, Studio Theatre, Theater Wit, About Face, Actor’s Express, and The Magic, among others; and internationally in a dozen countries. He is a two-time MacDowell fellow and an associate artist at Roundabout. He is a Juilliard graduate.

Skintight is directed by Rogow and stars Suzanne Ankrum, Laura Argo, Jeff Brackett, Daniel Barrett, Louis Pedraza and Steve Schroko.

Skintight is sponsored by Thel Boylette and David Page. Costume Sponsors are DC Allen and Ken Flick and Sound Sponsor is Scott Bennett. Additional funding provided by the following: The Our Fund Foundation, The Schubert Foundation Inc., The SHS Foundation, The Maval Foundation, the Warten Foundation, the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council, and by the Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, the Florida Council of Arts and Culture and the State of Florida.

Island City Stage’s 12th Season closing production will be Die! Mommie Die! by Charles Busch (Aug. 29 – Sept. 22).
Tickets for Skintight start at $40. A Mimosa Sunday performance sponsored by Deborah Floyd will take place on June 9 with tickets at $55. The show runs for 2 hours 15 minutes including intermission.

A testament to grassroots efforts, this film inspires with creative solutions, that illustrate how everyone can make a difference in preserving ecosystems and protecting wildlife.

• The Granny Grommets: As young girls they missed out on the “Surfing Generation,” but it’s never too late, and this enthusiastic pod recently grabbed their boards and took to the waves, where they found a wonderful camaraderie–and horizontal surfing that’s easier on the legs.
