The YMCA of South Florida, Children’s Services Council of Broward County, School Board of Broward County, HandsOn South Florida, Soles4Souls, City of Ft. Lauderdale Police Department, and volunteers from other companies and nonprofit organizations are committed to supporting K-12 education in South Florida and will provide free backpacks, school supplies, underwear and shoes to students in K through 12 students in Broward County.

Each child must be present and will receive one backpack filled with school supplies and other goodies. Families also can take advantage of free immunizations and apply for Florida Kidcare and free and reduced school meals.

Immunizations are for families without medical insurance. To make an appointment, call 954-771-5245. A copy of the child’s immunization record, COVID-19 vaccination card, parent’s photo ID (valid driver’s license or passport), and proof of address (lease, utility bill, etc.) is required.

The Friends of Jack & Jill Center – a support group of volunteers committed to developing community awareness, fundraising and program assistance for Jack & Jill Center’s children and their families – is honored to host the 23rd Annual Power Lunch at First Baptist Downtown Event Center in Fort Lauderdale on Thursday, Sept. 26, at 11:30 a.m. Neki Mohan, the vice president of Visit Lauderdale, will serve as the master of ceremonies.

The event pays tribute to special and outstanding honorees in the South Florida community who have helped The Friends of Jack & Jill Center raise over $6.5 million for high-need children and families since its inception in 1999. Over 300 business professionals in Broward County are anticipated to attend the 23rd Annual Power Lunch.

In recognition of their dedication to Jack & Jill Center, the luncheon will honor Greg Young, known as Greg the Barber, as the volunteer honoree, Holman Enterprises as the philanthropic organization honoree and Stephen Distributing as the corporate honoree. These awards are bestowed to those who have gone above and beyond through their contributions and service to the Jack & Jill Center.

The proceeds from the event will benefit Jack & Jill Center’s mission to strengthen children and families through innovative education, supportive programming and community engagement. Jack & Jill Center supports children of high-need working families through quality early childhood education, elementary education, family strengthening program and HEALTH Program to ensure every child and family has the tools they need to be successful. Jack & Jill Center has served 30,000 children and families in South Florida since 1942.

The LOOP invites the community and their furry companions to the Movies by Moonlight “Dog Days of Summer” series. MODS is open an hour early for sensory-friendly Museum exploration and activities followed by an IMAX film at 12:30 p.m.

To provide a more sensory-sensitive environment for individuals on the autism spectrum, the theater lights will be turned up and the sound will be lowered. All films will be presented in 2D. No trailers will be shown before the movie. Audience members are welcome to get up, sing, walk, dance and shout without worrying about complaints. Families may bring snacks from home, as well as blankets and other small items to be comfortable.

Guests can also participate in a variety of sensory based activities throughout the Museum. Children will engage in social interactions and improve the processing, modulation and regulation of sensory input to increase participation in a natural environment.

Don’t miss this special opportunity to experience South Florida’s award-winning attraction featuring 150,000 square feet of dynamic science exhibits, an outdoor science park, a live animal collection, a rotating schedule of science shows, learning labs, café, store and a grand atrium featuring the Great Gravity Clock, a 52-foot-tall kinetic energy sculpture; the largest clock in Florida. The showpiece of the museum since 1993, this unique timepiece is one of only three in the world.

ArtServe’s “Ready-Made” Exhibit Opens Friday, July 19 With Free Reception

Crafters, wine bottle label designers, ceramics enthusiasts, wig-makers, jewelry designers, tattoo artists and other talented creative entrepreneurs who seldom get the chance to exhibit their work will be showcased at ArtServe’s upcoming exhibit “Ready-Made: Celebrating Business, Art and Community” that runs from Friday, July 19 through Friday, Sept. 6, 2024.

Ready-Made opens with a free, public reception at ArtServe from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 19.

ArtServe is located at 1350 E. Sunrise Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale and is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“After seeing Ready-Made, your everyday experiences will come with a fresh perspective on the knowledge that an artist has created virtually everything with which we interact each day,” ArtServe CEO Jason Hughes explained. “For example, even a trip to the grocery store entails visual artwork on so many levels—the colorful displays, the food packaging, the coupons and even the fresh sushi at the seafood counter have one thing in common—they were all created by artists!”

ArtServe opened participation in Ready-Made to local artists of all genres—with one caveat: Exhibited artwork must not be perishable (which means the fresh pastries and sushi displays must remain in their respective stores!).

Ready-Made opens alongside a national launch of “Handwork: Celebrating American Craft 2026,” a massive Semiquincentennial initiative to showcase the importance of the handmade, both throughout American history and contemporary life.

In 2022, Darius V. Daughtry, one of South Florida’s best-known poets, authors, directors and educators, presented a stage reading of Seeking, where he explored a journey of self-discovery in the midst of an everchanging world. Now he brings his well-received work to the stage in this new full production with performances on Friday, July 26 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, July 27 at 2 and 7 p.m. in the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Written and directed by Daughtry, Seeking is an unforgettable experience that brings music and magic to the stage as the audience follows the story of a young musician’s quest for independence. Feeding South Florida® – the leading hunger-relief organization in South Florida – will host its Annual Outrun Hunger 5K in Palm Beach County in celebration of Hunger Action Month on Saturday, Sept. 21. Runners, families and community leaders of all ages will come together to take steps in the beautiful Okeeheelee Park to raise funds and awareness to end hunger in South Florida.

Hunger Action Month, a nationwide initiative created by Feeding America®, takes place throughout September and is designed to raise awareness about the issue of hunger in America and inspire others to take action toward ending it. Throughout the month, Feeding South Florida will offer a range of events and activities to encourage South Florida residents to “GO ORANGE” and engage in various hunger relief efforts.

Outrun Hunger race day check-in opens at 6:30 a.m. and the 5K will begin at 7:30 a.m. After the race, an awards ceremony and a raffle will take place. Participants can join the event as an individual or a team and conduct online fundraising prior to race day.

This event features the performers’ favorite selections from the opera world, offering a diverse and captivating repertoire. The Miami Beach Classical Music Festival presents featured performances in the Ocean Drive Association’s resident-centric and family-friendly concert series bringing classical music outside of the concert hall and into the community. Dead Man Walking is an opera by acclaimed composer, Jake Heggie, based on the book and film interpretation of the same name. It’s a powerful retelling of the true story that has profoundly influenced the ongoing debate on the death penalty in America. Settle in for a spectacular live opera experience by Miami Beach Classical Music Festival.

When a New Orleans-based Catholic nun agrees to become pen pals with an inmate convicted of murder on death row, her entire worldview on life, death, forgiveness, and capital punishment is challenged forever.

Heggie will be in residence to work with MMF’s Opera Institute cast to help tell this poignant story featuring a libretto by Tony-award-winning Terrance McNally (Masterclass, Ragtime).

Burgess Modern + Contemporary is thrilled to unveil “INK: 75 Years of Prints”, a vibrant summer exhibition that promises to captivate art lovers and collectors alike with a diverse and dynamic collection of fine art prints, limited editions, and numbered series of works spanning several generations and artistic movements.

Opening on July 19, 2024, from 6 – 9 pm, this exhibition features works by Derrick Adams, Marc Chagall, The Connor Brothers, Salvador Dali, Damien Hirst, Alex Katz, Joan Miro, Jedd Novatt, Pablo Picasso, Ugo Rondinone, Carlos Rolon, David Salle, Kenny Scharf, Frank Stella, Donald Sultan, and Nicole Wittenberg.

Curatorially inspired by the recently opened and highly celebrated exhibition of Alex Katz’s “60 Years of Printmaking” in Paris, the exhibition at Burgess Modern + Contemporary explores the dialogue between historical finesse and contemporary boldness through the works by some of the most celebrated modern and contemporary artists.

Each artwork in “INK: 75 Years of Prints” offers a rare spectrum of styles and techniques and embodies a unique narrative that is both culturally poignant and artistically significant. Marc Chagall’s lithographs, imbued with dreamlike imagery and vibrant colors, invite viewers into his fantastical world, where folklore and personal memory intertwine. Similarly, the surrealist masterpieces of Salvador Dalí push the boundaries of imagination and technique. Alex Katz, whose work also serves as a source of inspiration for this exhibition, is renowned for his flat, bold portraits that capture the essence of his subjects with striking simplicity. Joan Miró’s prints, characterized by playful abstraction and a vivid palette, offer a whimsical yet profound commentary on the human mind. Contemporary artist Derrick Adams’s work reflects on African American culture and identity, often incorporating elements of collage and vibrant patterns that challenge traditional narratives and celebrate individuality. The enigmatic works of The Connor Brothers blur the lines between fiction and reality, using text and imagery to provoke thought and elicit emotional responses. Ugo Rondinone’s prints, celebrated for their meditative and poetic qualities, seamlessly blend natural motifs with minimalist abstraction, offering viewers a contemplative visual experience that transcends the ordinary.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade will host its annual black-tie “Wild About Kids” Disco Ball at the Loews Coral Gables Hotel on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2024. The event will kick off with a cocktail reception at 7 p.m. followed by a three-course dinner in the Alhambra Ballroom. South Florida’s community leaders, philanthropists and influencers will be among the guests who will experience the 70s with glitter and glamour under the disco ball. Antiheroes Project, in collaboration with Sandrell Rivers Theater, presents “Ciudad líquida – Liquid City”.

Abandoned by the surgeon in the middle of a delicate surgery, the young patient waits in the hospital, oblivious to his responsibility in the unusual incident. It is heavily raining in the city, but he can barely move his head to look through the hospital window.

An immersive theater experience, in Spanish with English language supertitles.

“Liquid City” will offer accommodations for the general audience and the disability community, including: Bilingual supertitles, bilingual large print programs, braille programs, assistive listening devises and guided touch tours for the blind and low vision individuals. Let the hopeful, romantic sounds of South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO)’s popular Summer with the Symphony chamber series enchant you this summer. Sometimes being slow, small or weak can have its advantages in Survival of the Slowest, the newest summer traveling exhibit presented by Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, running June 7 through September 5, at the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS). Guests will get an in-depth look at the often-overlooked species that evolved to slow down as part of their survival strategy in a world where large, strong and fast animals are often at the top of the food chain.

The exhibit will feature 14 habitats with live animals (17 species) and plants. Guests will get an up-close look at wildlife with daily presentations featuring a sloth, a tarantula, tortoises, a hedgehog, a blue-tongued skink and more* via wildlife educators and MODS’ Life Sciences staff. Meet animals that have survived for millions of years despite being very slow and learn about the puzzling sides of evolution and adaptation. Discover the difference between warm- and cold-blooded species, explore why some animals need less food than others and see the unique ways they hide from predators.

This educational exhibit looks at the different survival strategies of various species. How can slow and steady win the race? Does bigger always mean better? What animals benefit from being weak rather than strong? This exhibit looks at the advantages and disadvantages of these different traits.

This world class exhibit is produced by Little Ray’s Nature Exhibitions in collaboration with the Canadian Museum of Nature. It is locally sponsored by Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. Little Ray’s Nature Centres is the largest exotic animal rescue organization in Canada with educational programs reaching more than one million Canadians each year. Most of the animals in this exhibition are rescues.

Kiddos Magazine, South Florida’s parenting magazine, will host a free “Back-to-School Bash” and its 11th Anniversary celebration in partnership with CityPlace Doral on Saturday, Aug. 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. during Florida’s tax-free weekend.

The fun-filled community event at CityPlace Doral will feature exhibitors and community partners including the latest in products and entertainment for kids, pre-teens and parents – just in time for back-to-school and
Florida’s tax-free weekend.

The free event will showcase a back-to-school fashion show, first-class entertainment and a full day of festive family fun. Children will have the opportunity to enjoy a toddler zone, train rides, petting zoo, hula hoop contest, characters, food, goodie bags music, giveaways and much more.

The “Back-to-School Bash” is presented by Dade County Federal Credit Union, and will feature an interactive “Saving is Fun” station where parents will learn about DCFCU’s array of services including saving and checking accounts, loans and so much more.
