South Florida Symphony Orchestra Presents Tchaikovsky and Bruch 4/18/24

South Florida Symphony Orchestra Presents Tchaikovsky and Bruch
Thursday, 04/18/2024-, 07:30 pm-09:30 pm
Temple Israel of Greater Miami
137 NE 19th St,
Miami, Florida, 33132
Website
Cost: $36

Become enraptured in the drama of Tchaikovsky and the sprightly Highland-inspired melodies of Bruch as South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO) presents an exuberant April Masterworks finale to a triumphant season! Led by Sebrina María Alfonso, SFSO will perform Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 in E minor, Op. 64 and Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy in E-flat major, Op. 46 featuring Huifang Chen, SFSO’s associated conductor and concertmaster, on violin, at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 18, at Temple Israel of Greater Miami (137 NE 19th Street).

A sense of deep longing underscores Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s (1840 – 1893) Symphony No. 5. in E minor, Op. 64. Composed in 1888, the work takes audiences on a storied journey inspired by “Fate” – beginning with deep gloomy chords that evolve into musical transitional canter culminating in an exhilarating joyful coda of triumph as we rejoice in the power of the human spirit. Today, during a quite different kind of global struggle, Symphony No. 5 invites us to rebel against despair.

German composer Max Bruch’s (1838 – 1920) spirited Scottish Fantasy in E-flat major, Op. 46 is steeped in the sounds of the Highlands, even though Bruch had not yet visited Scotland when he wrote the acclaimed piece. A four-movement tribute to traditional folk melodies, it opens with notes built upon “Through the Wood Laddie.” This tune also appears at the end of the second and fourth movements. The second movement is built around “The Dusty Miller,” the third on “I’m A’ Doun for Lack O’ Johnnie,” and the fourth movement includes a sprightly arrangement of “Hey Tuttie Tatie,” from the patriotic anthem “Scots Wha Hae” (with lyrics by Robert Burns).

Following its highly acclaimed 25th anniversary season, including sold-out shows and a celebrated performance accompanying award-winning alt-rock indie vocalist Natalie Merchant, South Florida’s largest symphonic orchestra is continuing its musical journey of excellence inspiring audiences of all ages.

In addition to its sold-out season masterworks performances, Maestra Alfonso will be conducting SFSO in an upcoming live performance of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone ™ In Concert on April 5 and 6 and Classical Mystery Tour: A Symphonic Tribute to The Beatles on May 11, both at Broward Center for the Performing Arts (separately ticketed events).

Single tickets for this Masterworks program begin at $36 for Temple Israel of Greater Miami.

Miami, FL – The second South Florida edition of the Festival of Colors (festivalofcolorsfl.com) is coming to central Miami at Peacock Park in Coconut Grove on Saturday, April 13.

After an inaugural colorful 2023 event attended by hundreds in Ft, Lauderdale, this marks the second local edition of the Festival of Colors USA. It’s been beloved by conscious partiers throughout the western US for nearly two decades (festivalofcolorsusa.com), and billed as “the world’s happiest transformational festival.”

Inspired by the Indian festival of Holi, the Festival of Colors will take place on Saturday, April 13 from 11 am to 4 pm, at Peacock Park, 2820 MacFarlane Rd., Coconut Grove, Miami, 33133.

The day promises to be a vibrant celebration of love, unity, and joy, and sober, uplifting fun, with plenty of cruelty-free cuisine, arts and crafts, mantra music, HOURLY COLOR THROWS — and free entry for kids under 12!

The Festival of Colors, also known as Holi, is a Hindu festival that has been celebrated in India and other parts of the world for centuries. It’s a time when people come together to celebrate the arrival of spring and the victory of good over evil. During the festival, participants throw colorful powder at each other, dance to live music, and enjoy delicious food.

This year’s Festival of Colors in Florida promises to be an unforgettable experience for all attendees. In addition to the colorful powder throwing and live music, there will also be yoga, meditation, and dance workshops throughout the day. There will also be plenty of food vendors, serving up delicious vegetarian and vegan options.

“We’re thrilled to bring the Festival of Colors to South Florida for the first time this year,” said festival organizer, Vasanti Dasi. “We want to create a space where people can come together, have fun, and celebrate the beauty of diversity and unity. This festival is a celebration of life, love, and happiness.”

Tickets for the Festival of Colors are available for purchase on the festival’s website, festivalofcolorsfl.com. Early bird tickets are on sale now, so make sure to grab yours before they sell out. Again, kids under 12 enter free, and there’s a special discount for students and veterans.

Use promo code BHAKTI at checkout to get presale entry for just $5 (with a bag of three colors) or $10 (with a bag of three colors and a vegetarian or vegan meal). Students and veterans can use the code to get presale entry with a bag of colors for $5.

Press passes are available by contacting press officer Radha dasi at radha@halftimeyoga.com, or calling 786-361-6417.

MIAMI – March 26, 2024 – The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County (@arshtcenter) is proud to present THE FORGOTTEN FOUNDING FATHERS written and produced by hip-hop legend Karl “Dice Raw” Jenkins (@DiceRaw), a frequent collaborator with hip-hop mega group and “The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon” co-stars, The Roots, as part of the Center’s Family Fun Live! Series. THE FORGOTTEN FOUNDING FATHERS will be presented on April 20, 2024 at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and April 21, 2024 at 3 p.m. inside the Center’s intimate Carnival Studio Theater.

Tickets for THE FORGOTTEN FOUNDING FATHERS are $30* and may be purchased now online at arshtcenter.org, or at the Arsht Center box office by calling (305) 949-6722.

THE FORGOTTEN FOUNDING FATHERS takes the audience on a captivating, theatrical and hip-hop journey that explores American history through the lens of African American, Latino and Indigenous heroes during some of the country’s most pivotal times, including the American Revolutionary War, Civil War and Reconstruction.

The family-friendly show spotlights heroes such as Prince Whipple, Wentworth Cheswell, Colonel Ty Cornelius, Sojourner Truth, Bernardo de Galvez and Phillis Wheatley. Unlike other historical education that highlights the pain and suffering of African Americans, Latino and Indigenous peoples, THE FORGOTTEN FOUNDING FATHERS aims to teach the contributions of these communities to the country.

In addition to the public performances that week, the Arsht Center has arranged for Karl Jenkins and the cast to visit Miami-Dade County public high schools for a series of workshops designed to engage students in a creative exploration of history through songwriting, acting and discussions of historical relevance and philosophy. Through interactive activities and discussions, students will gain a deeper understanding of the historical context and philosophical ideas that shaped the Founding Fathers’ legacy. Student performances at the Arsht Center will take place on April 18-19.

46 featuring Huifang Chen, SFSO’s associated conductor and concertmaster, on violin, at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17, at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale (707 NE 8th Street). A pre-concert chat with Dr. Alan Mason illuminating the works and composers will take place 30 minutes prior to the concert.

Single tickets for this Masterworks program begin at $15 for the Parker in Fort Lauderdale.

“Turtles (Les Tortues)” (Belgium/Canada, 2023) will open this year’s OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival Miami, internationally acclaimed as one of the largest LGBTQ+ cultural festivals in the world, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 18, at Silverspot Cinema Miami.

Directed by David Lambert, this relationship comedy-drama follows the ups and downs of married couple Thom and Henri, together for 35 years, now facing retired life and what happens when a love turns sour.

Since Thom and Henri met 35 years ago, their love for each other has never faltered. The seemingly perfect life they had built in Brussels started to go awry when Henri retired from being a police officer. Now, Henri’s days seem to stretch endlessly, each one as bland as the next while his feelings for Thom are fading fast. They drift away from each other a little more each day, to the point that their house has become a battleground. Thom’s love for Henri remains strong though and he is not ready to give up. He will do anything to save his relationship and rekindle their love, even if that means asking Henri for a divorce. Although the subject of divorce is no laughing matter, Turtles is alive with dry humor and joyous moments.

The W Miami Afterparty will take place immediately following the screening.

The City of Miami is offering FREE Uber Rides to and from Silverspot Cinema (within a 25 mile radius) for this film.

OUTrageous, OUTspoken, and OUTstanding, this year’s OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival Miami is sponsored, in part, by Miami Dade County, the City of Miami Beach and Gilead.

Ticket subscription packages and individual tickets are on sale now for the 41st edition of the OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival. For a full schedule of films, parties and special events or for more information, visit outshinefilm.com.

The artwork will become the focal point of the picture-perfect gathering space as a subtle reminder that we are individuals who together weave the fabric of our society.

The artist duo channels their colorful creativity into reconstructing the LGBTQ pride flag by using individual polypropylene webbing straps that weave through the palm trees hovering Lincoln Road’s Euclid Oval. The artists will elevate the district’s entry points on Washington Ave. and Alton Road, as well as the Euclid Oval, by incorporating colorful textile sleeves to all the planters reflecting the pride progressive flag. AMLgMATD’s approach involves redefining environments using repetition with familiar and unfamiliar materials in site-specific settings while integrating historical, geographical and cultural research into their artistic visual language.

Stick around after the unveiling for the annual lighting ceremony, Pride Lights the Night, which honors the memory of the Pulse Nightclub and Club Q shootings.

festival celebrating queer culture runs April 18 – 28 and will feature more than 50 internationally acclaimed features and shorts including premieres and documentaries that inspire, entertain, and educate. Adding to the excitement and sense of community this year will be a Latin Spotlight featuring men’s and women’s films, a panel for aspiring filmmakers and FREE Uber rides to and from select film screenings. The films will screen at Silverspot Cinema Miami (300 Southeast 3rd Street) from April 18 to 24 and at Regal South Beach (1120 Lincoln Road Mall, Miami Beach) from April 25 to 28. A variety of parties and special events will take place at various locations throughout Miami.

This year’s opening night film taking place at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 18, at Silverspot Cinema Miami is Turtles (Les Tortues) (Belgium/Canada, 2023). Directed by David Lambert, this relationship comedy-drama follows the ups and downs of married couple Thom and Henri, together for 35 years, now facing retired life and what happens when a love turns sour. The W Miami Afterparty will take place immediately following the screening.

Brand new to the Miami line-up this year is a Latin Spotlight night set for Saturday, April 20, at Silverspot Cinema Miami, with four films from Latin America. At 8 p.m. is the North American premiere of Blue Lights (Luces Azules)(Argentina, 2023). Directed by Lucas Santa Ana, Blue Lights is a vibrant, engaging and sophisticated dramedy that plays out during a 70th birthday celebration. Friends and family gather, tensions soars and secrets are revealed leaving each guest to explore their idea of friends, lovers and self. The film explores the intricacies of love, loss, friendship and the evolving dynamics of gay and lesbian relationships in a changing world. Festival-goers can also choose to see All The Silence (Tod El Silencio) (Mexico, 2023), directed by Diego Del Rio, at 8:15 p.m. This film will be in Spanish with Sign Language. This poignant film focuses on Miriam, an actress who is also a sign language teacher, who begins a downward spiral when she learns that she will become fully deaf. Despite having deaf parents, deaf friends and a deaf girlfriend, she refuses to accept a world without sound and starts to tear her life apart.

Two nights of Cocktails & Cinema will celebrate our local filmmakers, cast and crews from students to seasoned veterans of the industry at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, April 22, and Tuesday, April 23, at Silverspot Cinema Miami. This year’s South Florida Shorts program includes Double Life by Mellie Parks and Trinity Byonie, Frag by Christopher Frentzel, Myrna’s Secret Spies by Andy Perrott, and Open Dialogue: Generation QueerZ by Freddy Rodriguez. On both nights, there will be a Q&A after the screening and a reception will be held in the OUTshine Lounge at the Silverspot immediately following.

Max, a 25-year-old aspiring writer living in London, becomes a sex worker with the pseudonym Sebastian in order to research his debut novel and this secret double-life becomes a source of liberation and transformation in Sebastian (Finland/UK, 2024), this year’s Centerpiece Film. The film will be screened at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24, at Silverspot Cinema Miami. Writer/director Mikko Makela’s second feature offers an intriguing exploration of sex, identity, restraint and abandon. An afterparty will take place immediately following the film.

To encourage more local LGBTQ+ filmmakers to tell their stories, OUTshine will present its Filmmaker Panel on Saturday, April 27, at 2 p.m. at Regal South Beach. This special event will feature local directors Hansel Porras Garcia, director of Febrero and OOLITE Arts; Chris Molina, director of Fallen Fruit, I Wonder If I’m Growing and programmer with the Miami Film Festival; Freddy Rodriguez, director of Open Dialogues: Stories from the LGBTQ Community; Filmmaker Bootcat; Joe Tufte, Miami Dade College film professor; Noah Salzman, director of Clocked and Angelica Bourland, director of Warrior and Unstuck.

Also, on April 27, is the Men’s Spotlight slice-of-life comedy film F.L.Y. (USA, 2023), directed by Rafael Albarran and Trent Kendrick. When two ex-boyfriends (Max and Rafael), who haven’t seen each other in five years, reunite — the covid pandemic hits, and they’re forced to quarantine together. The Ladies Spotlight Film will be the East Coast premiere of Backspot (Canada, 2023), directed by D.W. Waterson. Riley is given the chance to cheer with the all-star squad, Thunderhawks. With a competition looming, Riley must navigate her crippling anxiety, her relationship with her girlfriend, and her desperate need for approval from her new coach.

Additional selections of note include the North American premieres of Lessons of Tolerance (Ukraine, 2023), The Fisherman’s Daughter (La Estrategia Del Mero) (Colombia, 2023), and Sunflower (Australia, 2023); the Southeast premiere of Gondola (Georgia, 2023); the Trans-focused films Close To You (Canada and UK, 2023) starring Elliott Page and The Summer with Carmen (Greece, 2024); the Queer Festival premiere of the award-winning Riley (USA, 2023), and the documentary Mad About The Boy: The Noel Coward Story (UK, 2023) narrated by Alan Cumming.

The North American premiere of Mascarpone: The Rainbow Cake (Maschile Plural) (Italy, 2024) will be the Closing Night Film commencing at 6 p.m. on Sunday, April 28, at Regal South Beach. Director Alesandro Haigh presents an intoxicating drama about sexy duo Antonio and Luca who are trying to pick up the pieces three years after their friend Denis’s passing. While each went their separate ways, when the two meet again Antonio mistakes Luca’s desire to reconnect as more than just a pure gesture of friendship. Immediately following at 8 p.m., a celebratory South Beach Group Hotel Closing Night Party will take place at the Miami Beach Women’s Club (2401 Pine Tree Drive, Miami Beach).

To make attending OUTshine’s incredible films and special events more accessible, the City of Miami is offering FREE Uber Rides to and from Silverspot Cinema (within a 25 mile radius) valid from April 18 through April 24!

OUTrageous, OUTspoken, and OUTstanding, this year’s OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival Miami is sponsored, in part, by Miami Dade County, the City of Miami Beach and Gilead.

Saturday, 04/20/2024-, 05:30 pm-09:00 pm
American Heritage Schools – Broward Campus
12200 W Broward Blvd.,
Plantation, Florida, 33325
Website
Cost: $20 online and $25 at the door

American Heritage Schools [ahschool.com], the top-ranked PK3 through 12 college preparatory school in Florida, is proud to announce its annual “K-9 Cause: An Evening of Art” auction benefiting the Broward Sheriff’s Foundation’s Retired Canine Relief Fund, on Saturday, April 20.

Everyone loves dogs; however, police dogs, or K-9s, are a special breed. Instead of enjoying the pampered pet lifestyle, K-9s dedicate their entire lives to working daily to protect and serve citizens in our community along with their fearless handlers. They are considered law enforcement officers, whose duties include constant training, apprehending suspects, and searching for explosives, drugs, and missing persons.

When the K-9s retire, their law enforcement handlers graciously adopt them and continue to care for them, as these K-9s have become their friends for life. Recognizing that the medical and healthcare for these K-9s can get quite costly, the Broward Sheriff’s Foundation has established the Retired K-9 Healthcare Fund. This Fund pays for up to 50% of the wellness care costs for all retired K-9s from any local law enforcement agency in Broward County.

Inspired by a little boy’s passion for animals and art, American Heritage Schools is raising money to “fund this fund” by selling artistic renditions of these fine K-9s. Jackson Laurie, a sophomore at American Heritage Schools, and his parents Dr. Douglas Laurie and Nikki Laurie-Van Allen have partnered with the National Art Honor Society and the award-winning Fine Arts faculty at American Heritage to create artwork of these very K-9 being honored.

American Heritage Schools, Broward Campus, will be hosting a Silent Auction for these original works of art, as well as a limited supply of prints for sale at our K-9 Cause event. 100% of all funds raised from this event will benefit the Broward Sheriff Foundation’s Retired K-9 Relief Fund.

MIAMI, Fla. (March 25,2024) – We are excited to announce an extraordinary evening event for PATCHES, a wonderful cause that offers parents peace of mind by caring for children stricken with critical, long-term medical conditions who need care every day of their lives.
PATCHES will host its inaugural Farm to Table Gala on Thursday, May 16th, 2024, at Hacienda Los Robles in the Redlands. The dinner event begins at 6 p.m. and will feature the best of locally sourced gourmet dining, great music, and, of course, fabulous wine and drink! This exceptional evening will also provide a sneak preview of plans to create a new 65,000 sq. ft. PATCHES Village on 5 acres of land in Florida City.
“We are overwhelmed by the tremendous support and generosity shown by everyone involved in the inaugural gala,” said Lucia Soria, Gala Chair. We thank our founding sponsors for their generosity and look forward to changing the trajectory of the lives of these incredible children and their families—bringing them hope for a healthier future.”
Sponsorships are $10,000, $5,000 or $2,500. Founding benefit sponsors include Lennar, FPL, Ram-Tech, and Marlin.
“I am proud to support PATCHES and our first “Farm to Table Gala”, said Larry Roth, Chairman of the Board of Directors. “This event will go a long way towards involving our generous South Dade community and I hope you will join us in making our dream for a new PATCHES Village a reality”.
To join us or support this one-of-a-kind event, please go to Farm to Table Gala , or visit www.patchesvillage.org to learn more about our plans.
But most importantly, with your help, we can make a difference and impact children’s lives in South Dade.
ABOUT PATCHES
Children who qualify for PATCHES Pediatric Nursing Center are usually referred from local hospitals–particularly Nicklaus Children’s Hospital–and may be suffering from medical complexities due to premature birth, terminal illness, recovery from complex surgeries, severe asthma, or other respiratory conditions, life-threatening cardiac issues, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, Down Syndrome, other rare genetic disorders, or birth to mothers with AIDS or drug addictions. 59% of the families with children at PATCHES fall under the federal poverty level. While PATCHES receives Medicaid funds from eligible patients, the facility largely relies on the community’s and donors’ generosity to fully meet its needs. Due to the life-changing therapy, medical care, and educational support, most children who enroll at PATCHES eventually assimilate into the community and local school system with their normal peer group. Recently showcased on Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Miami, Dr. Weiner guided de Moura through ketamine-assisted therapy to assist with reprocessing grief and loss.

Dr. Weiner is double board-certified in Interventional Pain Medicine, Physical Medicine, and Rehabilitation. She is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Nova Southeastern University, Vice President of Mr. Psychedelic Law and a member of Florida’s Medical Cannabis Advisory Committee. Dr. Weiner’s unique approach to personalized integrative pain management allows her to treat the root cause of one’s pain and suffering, both physical and emotional, providing comprehensive and durable relief. She uses a biopsychosocial model including lifestyle and plant medicine to empower her patients to cultivate health and optimize quality of life. Dr. Weiner was trained in ketamine-assisted psychotherapy by the Ketamine Training Center and incorporates a multidisciplinary patient-centered approach.

TV personality and philanthropist de Moura’s true passion is her career as an art dealer. From a very tender age, de Moura was introduced to art by her grandmother who was a painter. de Moura has traveled to more than 55 countries, visiting renowned museums and galleries worldwide. She has represented many international artists and has worked on several art events in Rome, Monte Carlo, Stockholm and London. She is fluent in five languages – Portuguese, English, Spanish, French and Italian – and also sings in all five languages. She has composed and sung the theme song for The Real Housewives of Miami’s television show as well. As an avid learner, she firmly believes in the power of education and is pursuing her third degree, a master’s in psychology at Harvard.

Miami Beach, Florida, 33139

Cost: 30

MAPP (Mentorship, Advocacy, Purpose and the Power of women) is the non-
profit organization dedicated to empowering women in the culinary and
hospitality industry. On Tuesday, April 2 the organization will return to Miami for
the red carpet premiere of filmmaker Joanna James’ exploration and celebration
of women in the culinary industry in the award-winning film, A Fine Line. Taking
place at Miami Beach’s Regal Cinema, the event will be part of a day-long series
of events focused on creating a culture of self-worth and respect for women in or
looking to build a life in the restaurant industry.

The film premiere itself will take place at 7:30PM, followed by an all-star panel
discussion featuring local and national female culinary stars including Dominique
Crenn, who stars in the film and is the only three Michelin star female chef in the
U.S. Joining her will be chefs Eileen Andrade, Lorena Garcia, Karla Hoyos,
Dayanny De La Cruz, Suzanne Baer and Karina Rivera. Tickets for the film and
panel are $30 per person.

For those looking to expand their opportunity to learn and further engage with
MAPP, there will be a mini-conference earlier that day, starting at 3:30PM at
Santorini by Georgios. Industry leaders will delve into the theme of “Creating a
Culture of Respect,” featuring rotating workshops and discussions on self-worth
including financial independence, so female professionals feel their voices are
heard. There will be an appetizer, wine and cocktail reception for attendees to
meet each other while also having the opportunity to speak with their industry
heroes leading panel conversations.

In addition to being the CEO and founder of MAPP, James is the director and
producer of the award-winning film that had its national broadcast premiere on
PBS, A Fine Line. The film became a rallying call for greater gender equality in
professional kitchens and the building blocks to what MAPP is today.
The April 2nd event will be its official cinematic release in Miami.

“It’s full circle not only bringing the film I made on creating gender equality in the
hospitality industry to Miami, the hub of nightlife and epic restaurants, but also
the non-profit born from it MAPP, hosting its annual conference here,” said
James. This time women will get to see themselves and our universal stories on
the big screen to ask ourselves how we can shape a future where respect,
equality and empowerment thrive.”

Proceeds from the event will benefit the 501c3 non-profit MAPP, dedicated to
empowering women into leadership roles. This even was made possible by our
sponsors: PepsiCo, Delta Air Lines, Dough Wines, Markham Napa Valley
Vineyards.

“The Greatest Documentary You’ve Ever Heard.” – Rolling Stone

32 Sounds is an Oscar shortlisted immersive documentary and profound sensory experience from filmmaker Sam Green featuring original music by JD Samson. The piece weaves together 32 audio experiences, crafting a cinematic poem as a meditation on the power of sound to bend time, cross borders, and profoundly shape our perception of the world around us.

Critically acclaimed as an “audiovisual marvel”, the performance has received rave reviews from The New York Times, Variety, Vox and others and has toured prestigious venues including the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the National Gallery of Art, and the Sundance Film Festival. The title is a nod to “32 Short Films About Glenn Gould” and the film is centered around a series of vignettes, each about a specific audio recording that hits an emotional, political, or conceptual note.

A film about sound, the performance itself will be focused on the experience of hearing and listening, complete with live narration by Sam Green and individual headphones for each audience member to create an incredible binaural sound mix.

This live cinema experience sits at the intersection of film and performance, pushing the boundaries of both forms while celebrating the collective in-person experience. By entering into Green’s poignant aural-visual landscapes, we revisit memories, we imagine, and we bridge time and space in ways both intensely personal and interconnected. 32 Sounds invites audiences to join this communal experience with open ears, and never hear the world the same way again.

Books & Books is proud to present an evening with Zibby Owens for her novel: Blank (Little A). She will be in conversation with Alexandra Wilkis Wilson.
***Please note: This event will take place at the Books & Books in Coral Gables at 265 Aragon Ave. Tickets include a copy of BLANK, which will be handed out upon entry to the event.
About the Book:
A wife, mother, and frustrated writer faces an impossible deadline for turning her life around in a hilarious debut novel about family, friendship, success, and exhilarating self-(re)discovery.
Pippa Jones is a fortyish former literary sensation who fears she will be a one-hit wonder. After the follow-up book she was almost done writing, Podlusters, had to be tossed (it ended up sharing a plot and title with superstar author Ella Rankin’s summer blockbuster!), she couldn’t write a thing. Months of staring at a blank page made her confidence vanish like a one-night stand. When she finds out that she has only five days left to finish (or rather, start) or repay an advance she’s already spent, Pippa has a brilliantly original idea. Okay, fine, her twelve-year-old son came up with it as a joke, but Pippa and her teenage daughter approved.
Pippa’s not only going to make a bold statement, but she’ll change the book world while she’s at it! Can she pull it off? At this point, she doesn’t have a choice.
When Pippa’s publisher gets intimately involved, it unlocks a series of plot twists she never saw coming. From the courtyards of posh Beverly Hills hotels and Malibu mega-mansions to Brentwood and Santa Monica bookstores, Pippa races against time—in her used Volvo—and discovers more about her career, marriage, family, friends, and herself than she ever could have dreamed up.
⭑“Leave it to Zibby Owens to write a novel about a lovable woman single-handedly disrupting the publishing industry. Blank explores marriage, parenting, friendship, and the competitive high jinks of the book trade with the perfect amount of wit and light-touch humor.I devoured this book in a single sitting.”—Annabel Monaghan, Nora Goes Off Script and Same Time Next Summer
⭑“Zibby Owens is a tremendous champion for writers, and it’s thrilling to see her own storytelling shine in this smart debut novel about marriage, motherhood, and finding your purpose. Blank is a romp through the publishing world and a delightful gift to book lovers.”—Carley Fortune, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Meet Me at the Lakeand Every Summer

About the Author:
ZIBBY OWENS—like Pippa—wears a lot of hats. She is the award-winning podcast host of Moms Don’t Have Time to Read Books; founder and CEO of Zibby Media, which includes the publishing house, Zibby Books, online content site, Zibby Mag, Zibby’s Book Club, retreats, classes, events, and podcasts; and owner of Zibby’s Bookshop, an independent bookstore in Santa Monica. Her previous books include Bookends: A Memoir of Love, Loss, and Literature, Princess Charming, and two anthologies that she edited. Most of all, she is the mother of four pretty fabulous kids ages 9 to 16—and wife to Kyle.
About the Moderator:
Alexandra Wilkis Wilson is an American entrepreneur and investor who co-founded the companies the Gilt Groupe, GlamSquad, and Fitz. She is currently co-founder and Managing Partner at Clerisy, a consumer-focused growth equity fund.

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will present a free book signing and meet & greet with John Bailey, author of “A New River Runs Through It,” on Saturday, March 23, from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. His appearance is part of History Fort Lauderdale’s “Florida Scribes & Stories,” a meet the author monthly series that offers literary and history enthusiasts a chance to speak with local authors, purchase their latest releases and have them signed.

“A New River Runs Through It” is an exciting, comprehensive story of a river and the city that grew up along its banks. Beginning with the legend of how the river acquired its name, this narrative brings to life the story of the rugged men and women who settled along it and built the city of Fort Lauderdale into a world class international business and financial center. It ends with the latest events: the recent expansion of rail commuter service, the city’s management of the Covid-19 pandemic, and a look forward to our future. The book is available on Amazon.com and at History Fort Lauderdale’s Museum Shop.

In 1946, at the age of nine, John Bailey arrived at the New River with his parents. He attended several of the area’s different schools – West Side, Davie, Naval Air, Central, and Fort Lauderdale High School. Through his various local teachers, Bailey developed an abiding interest in his home town. Many of his personal experiences of growing-up and living along the River are sprinkled throughout this book. His previous best selling history books include “Sentinel of the Jersey Cape,” “The Story of the Cape May Lighthouse; Cape Island,” “The Jewel of the Jersey Shore” and “Juet’s Journal, Henry Hudson’s Explorations on the Half Moon.”

History Fort Lauderdale presents “Visions of Women,” its first ever fine art exhibition from the National League of American Pen Women Fort Lauderdale Branch (NLAPW). This new exhibition will feature art from NLAPW award-winning artists/members Claudia Hafner, Judy Nunno, Phoenix, Donna Sallee, and Tammy Seymour from April 4 – 30.

“Visions of Women” will feature a collection of artworks joined by the theme of “empowering women” and the subjects and causes that inspire them to motivate others. According to Phoenix, president of NLAPW, the conceptual basis for this exhibition was the 100th anniversary of the formal adoption of the 19th Amendment into the U.S. Constitution. This landmark victory granted women the constitutional right to vote. For Pen Women this has extra significance. Its organization was founded in 1897 by Marian Longfellow Donoghue (niece of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow) to empower professional women journalists who were discriminated against and excluded by major publications. The original intent of Pen Women founders to find “mutual aid, advice, future development” for professional women artists still resonates.

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, hosts a variety of engaging multicultural experiences, year-round. It seeks to bring awareness to the community through both traveling exhibits and multiple permanent exhibits including “Women Trailblazers,” “Fort Lauderdale – the Early Years,” “The African American Experience,” “Fashion & Musical Theatre,” “From Dugouts to Dream Yachts: the story of boatbuilding along the New River,” Seminole Arts & Culture,” “New River Archaeology,” “Viva Fort Lauderdale: Celebrating Hispanic Art & Culture,” and, “Take PRIDE, a retrospective on LGBTQ life in South Florida.” The nonprofit museum also hosts an artists’ collective collaborative space.

“Visions of Women” is sponsored by the following funds at the Community Foundation of Broward: Jan and Ed Crocker Unrestricted Fund, Leo M. and Alice J. Rutten Fund and The Frederick A. DeLuca Foundation Broward Community Fund.
