Le Iconique: Une Exposition Miserable de Terribly Odd is a collection of works paying tribute to iconic french figures leading up to a period in European social history known as Belle Époque or the “Beautiful Era.” From the terror of tiny Napoleon, to the grandeur of Eiffel’s vision; Le Iconique will span the ages of French history calling upon the sights and sounds of her storied past.

So who is this “Terribly Odd?” Is it a figment of the imagination, a persona, or perhaps that ounce of morbidness that lurks within us?
Terribly Odd, better known as Mike, was born and raised in Miami and spent the majority of his adolescence attempting to evade the excitement of delinquency. In doing so, he experienced the pop culture society that blankets our country and now the world. Intrigued by the many atypical chances popular culture had to offer, in Odd’s late teens, he ventured on to Savannah for a brief stint at the Savannah College of Art and Design. There, Odd soon realized that he would rather produce “miserable” works and kissed-off the thought of ever creating “fine” art.
Art to Odd is a reaction, a language, and his work ranges from the surreal to the decaying scenes of sheer horror spanning film, music, and the unconventional beauty of pop culture; always looking to tread the line between innocence and indecency.
Odd’s work speaks for itself, Odd went from just “someone” who grew up with sketchbooks full of little bastard creations, to “Terribly Odd,” now having a loyal audience to share his vision with. Since then it has been a mad rush of sketches, paintings, and digital works and the ability to share his work through a variety of mediums, being a part of a number of shows as well as solo exhibitions. Definitely coming a long way, Odd’s attempt to take over the world is still in progress.. There is a lot more in store for the “Odd World.”

The MIA Program 2nd Opening at Kill Your Idol 4/23/10

The MIA Program
2nd Opening April 23rd
Kill Your Idol
222 Espanola way
Miami Beach, Fl 33139
The MIA Program: A ten year retrospective of Miami as seen through the eyes of Miami local skate boarders/photographers Ian OʼConnor and Frankie Galland is back for a second viewing.
The MIA Program lures you in to the world of… well yes, skateboarding in Miami, but it also offers an honest portrayal of Miami’s style, culture, and some of the very colorful characters who call Miami home. (Aka the ‘Lurkers’ series)

Some of Ian’s photos have debuted on covers of the most respected skate mags in the world, while other have never been shared with the public until now. ‘The Program’ does not only focus on the physical act of skateboarding, but also documents what skaters encounter out in the streets of the magic city. From the gutters in Liberty City, to breathtaking aerial views of Biscayne Bay, Ian takes you on a visual journey through one of the United States most vibrant and fascinating cities, all the while capturing some of the finest skate boarders in the world.

You may know Frankie Galland from MIA Skateshop where he pretends to own the place! In the past and present though he’s been known as a man behind the lens shooting for Strength Magazine as photo editor, as well as many other publications from Swindle to Skateboarder. He spends his free time dancing like Ian Curtis and enjoying Johnny on the rocks.

Artist Taylor Kienholz was born and raised in a small skateboard staple town, Santa Cruz ca. he has been a part of the skateboard family for over 10 years, hes lived in many united state cities making friends in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, and has found his home base with his wife and daughter in Miami beach fl. his artwork has a bold yet rustic feel to it with destressed woods and aged hand tools. his content ranges from playful cartoon birds and Mexican folk art to refined stained wood work, and art installations. he currently works for Urban Outfitters on Miami beach and designs and builds all their display installations. visit taylorkienholz.blogspot.com to see more of his work.

Caribe George Rodez exhibition at CocoWalk Coconut Grove Gallery Night 5/1/10

RODEZart.com Gallery
CoCoWalk – 3015 Grand Ave., Ste. 237
Coconut Grove, FL 33133
Following a very successful trip to the 32nd Annual International Art Expo New York this past month, I am extremely happy to announce that my artwork can now be found in one of Miami’s most unique neighborhoods, Coconut Grove. Now on the second floor of CocoWalk you will find RODEZart.com Gallery. This will also serve as my working art studio.

Join us on Saturday, May 1, 2010, during Coconut Grove Gallery Night from 7 to 10pm, as I present “Caribe” (kÉ™-ˈrÄ“-bÄ“), a retrospective exhibition of my Caribbean works; a search of my culture and roots, in the main gallery.

Cuba’s past comes alive in Caribe. The images come to life with bold, vivid colors like that of the stained glass windows of old Cuban architecture. I use subjects and images that would normally be used in folkloric Cuban paintings and give them a modern pop-ish twist. What I accomplish in creating this body of work is a sense of voyaging back to Cuba, transforming it, and making it fresh and new, as if never touched by 51 years of stagnation. The works act as a defibrillator bringing back to life the Cuba, Before Castro, and foretelling of the possibilities of a new beginning for the lost island of ruins.

Although I was born in Manhattan, New York, I have found a connection with my heritage and culture by fusing a life-style that I never knew with the modern day existence of the Cuban-American experience in Miami. It is a mixture of the old with the new, the Cuban and the American, the Caribbean and the African, all rolled up into one delicious palette of colors.

A percentage of all sales during the evening will be donated to the American Red Cross’ International Response Fund benefiting Haiti’s recovery.

Jerrys Artarama Open House and Mini Art Show with South Florida Artists Association 4/29/10

Announcing a new Meetup for South Florida Artists Association!
Jerry’s Artarama Open House and Mini Art Show with SFAA.
Thursday, April 29, 2010 6:30 PM
Jerry’s Artarama
242 S. Federal Highway
Deerfield Beach, FL 33441

A few years ago, SFAA had an open house and a quick, on the spot mini art show with about 30 of our visual artist meetup members. It was a great time, so we’ve decided to do it again this month. If you’ve never been to Jerry’s Artarama in Deerfield, this is a perfect reason to take a trip. Reco, the manager of the store will be keeping the doors open for our group a little later than usual, and offering an additional 20% off your entire purchase that night. Refreshments will be served, and I’ve also asked that they invite other members of the local community to attend and meet the artists.

We will be there between 6:30 and 8:30pm.

And please, if you have a small piece of your artwork that you’d like to show, I highly encourage you to bring it with you, and also a portable easel if you have one to display your work on. It’s a great opportunity to show others the quality and the type of work that you do.

If you need a little more incentive to come by, Jerry’s has been known to give way some great supplies during free raffles on the night of the event! We will be in the front of the store right as you walk in.

RELEASE: Selling Andy Warhol in your Pajamas

Miami Art Dealer Turns Art World on its Ear by Selling High-End Works Online

The typical morning starts at 6am. Miami art dealer and curator Reed V. Horth wakes up before sunrise and checks his Blackberry for the most urgent international clients who have emailed during the night seeking investment artworks. He virtually hop scotches from Hong Kong to Dublin, London, Toulouse, Dubai and finally Hanover. After quickly prioritizing his emails into incoming dealer inquiries and outgoing client inquiries, he sets to work on locating precisely the correct sculpture or painting for the given client, whether corporate or private, investment or decorative, figurative or abstract. Obviously, the biggest names carry the most weight and receive the biggest priority. As the day progresses he works his way from time-zone to time zone locating art and placing the art in the hands of clients and partners who are best suited to benefit from the connection.

Horth is part of a growing number of business-owners working from home as the market for traditional brick-and-mortar businesses is tightening and most are turning to alternate modes of commerce. His internet-centric company, ROBIN RILE FINE ART (www.robinrile.com) specializes in the location and procurement of investment-level paintings and sculpture with prices starting at $5,000 and working their way to over $20 Million. Many of the world’s most important masters have had works come through Horth’s hands in the past 13 years, including works from Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Indiana, Arman, Marc Chagall, Rembrandt van Rijn, Julian Schnabel, Fernando Botero, Frederick Hart, Richard MacDonald and others. He also has a growing contingent of emerging talent in figurative and contemporary paintings and sculpture. RRFA conducts exhibits, such as the highly successful SATELLITE Art & Design show during Art Basel Miami Beach 2009, and other Art openings throughout Miami and South Florida. This allows both established clients to edify themselves as to the physicality of ROBIN RILE FINE ART, as well as exposing new collectors to both Mr. Horth and his stable of artists. Future plans include international traveling exhibitions with a combination of both emerging talent and established masters.

“It is the blue-chip names that get your foot in the door”, says Horth, dressed in his customary work pajamas. “You know, [Andy] Warhol, [Pablo] Picasso, [Marc] Chagall, [Salvador Dali]. But, once you are chatting with clients, they tend to throw out some other, often obscure, names that they really want to collect. What is nice is that they also tend to “discover” my emerging artists and are surprised by the level of talent we have located. One of the luxuries I have is that I am not bound by space, time, geography or budget in my searches. If a client is serious about locating a major work, I go out and find it. If a client wants a particular emerging artist… I go out and locate them. If I know a client is serious, it may take me months, but I will find what they want at a price which is fair to both buyer and seller.”

After having been in the gallery business throughout Florida since 1996, Reed has mastered the art of sales-floor selling. But, in 2003 he developed a nearly complete virtual model for perpetuating online sales. “While I still enjoy doing exhibits and meeting clients face-to-face,” notes Horth, “the online model is a way many high-end clients are developing relationships with a dealer they trust to give them objective advice before actually committing to purchase. The world is a much smaller place now and clients want a small group of trusted people to weed the wheat from the chaff.” Obviously, he notes, reputation is key to success with this model. After a successful transaction, he asks each client to give him one referral of a friend or associate that might benefit from his expertise and inventory. “After all, their friends are generally in the same tax bracket”. Beyond this, he also must be extremely selective about what to present and what not to present. “There are a lot of Charlatans out there who want you to move works without proper documentation,” Reed warns. “You only get one chance with a client at this level. If the paperwork is wrong, the best thing that can happen is that the client never speaks to you again. The worst is that you end up in court. Why would anyone take a chance like that with their clients? So I reject about 90% of the art I am presented with.”

In this economic climate you might expect fewer people buying art as it is traditionally seen as a luxury expense. Horth finds that most of his collectors are active simply because their financial position allows them more leverage in this market than others. “Not having to pay for a second rent, power, phone, light bulbs and everything else that goes into a galleries allows me to give my clients the great deals they are looking for right now. While not a miracle worker, this flexibility keeps my inventories from going static. I was completely set up with this business model at just the right time. The market slumped and I hit my stride all at the same time.”

Under his watchful eye, museums, private and institutional investors, collectors and designers have sought his advice on projects and curation. While not exactly Hugh Hefner, the pajamas are certainly one distinguishing characteristic this high-end dealer has found that set him above from the rest in a tough economy.

EXHIBITION: Antonia Wright & Ruben Millares / “A Great Disorder is An Order”
CLOSING RECEPTION: Saturday, April 24th, 7-9pm
For more information please call 305.444.0333

777 Studio Gallery in Coral Gables is pleased to announce the upcoming public exhibition of artwork by two Miami-based talents, Antonia Wright and Ruben Millares. The exhibition is centered on the exploration of the human experience in the built and natural worlds; our relationship to our surroundings and to each other. Wright will present a series of photographs, On the Other Hand, video, and installation and Millares will present a multisensory installation of mobile sculptures and ink drawings for the exhibition. The closing reception with the artists is on Saturday, April 24th, 2010 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

In the series On the Other Hand, Antonia Wright repeats the same neutral gesture, a hand reaching, and places it in different contexts. The expression becomes a communication to the viewer, a metaphor begging for a reading into the deeper meaning of the act. The hand reaches out of the ocean on a rainy day, a pile of garbage, a field of ducks. Is the hand an invitation? A threatening gesture? Does the figure in the photo need help? Do we? Or both? These photos, mini poems on humanity, aim to highlight the ‘bizarre’ within the everyday façade of normal situations. This series, like all of Wright’s work, looks into our interpersonal connections to our surroundings, both to the natural and to each other, and explores our relationship to both.

Ruben Millares’ work speaks to the balance between man and nature. This series of mobiles physically focuses on the idea of equilibrium. Millares says, by using personal metal hangers, consumed shell fish and leftover construction materials that would otherwise be discarded, I bring human excess back to productive means. The mobiles move in concentric circular patterns at the mercy of the wind or water creating new and recycled energy from waste. Millares approaches ink drawings from an emotional stand point, letting the ink and water guide his internal feelings onto the paper. By using different tools, he is able to create ever changing textures within a traditional medium. The drawings, like the mobiles are impermanent even though they are fixed on a piece of paper. In this exhibit the artist presents mobiles and drawings together in a multisensory environment that is foreign yet known.
By presenting man-made materials in harmony with natural ones, we begin to see how man tries to create the beauty inherent in the natural world. Can it be done? Can we surpass the natural? Or is it the balance that is ultimately more important?

NORTHERN TRUST FOR ITS SUPPORT OF ARTS IN THE SOUTH FLORIDA COMMUNITY

Shutts & Bowen, LLP to Receive First Special Recognition Award
2010 Miami Art Museum Corporate Luncheon
Friday, May 7, 2010, Four Seasons Hotel Miami

Miami’s cultural, business and government leaders will honor the private sector’s impact on South Florida’s cultural vitality at the Miami Art Museum Corporate Luncheon on Friday, May 7, 2010. Northern Trust Corporation, a leading provider of investment management, asset and fund administration, fiduciary and banking solutions for corporations, institutions and affluent individuals worldwide, will receive the 2010 Miami Art Museum Corporate Honors for its major impact and support of South Florida’s cultural institutions. For the first time, a Special Recognition Award will be presented, recognizing Shutts & Bowen LLP for outstanding service to Miami Art Museum (MAM). The luncheon will be held at the Four Seasons Hotel Miami, 1435 Brickell Avenue, Miami, FL 33131, from 11:30am until 2pm. All event proceeds support Miami Art Museum’s education and public programs. Miami Art Museum is Miami-Dade County’s largest provider of arts education, outside the Miami-Dade County Public School System.

“Without corporate support, Miami would not have the thriving cultural community we are so fortunate to enjoy today,” said Aaron Podhurst, chairman of MAM’s board of trustees. “This luncheon is an opportunity to recognize and thank these corporate partners, whose contributions enable Miami’s cultural institutions to provide vital public programming, enriching the lives of the entire community.”

Ambassador Paul L. Cejas, MAM trustee and CEO of PLC Investments, will serve as honorary chairman, and MAM Trustee Rafael Miyar and Pedro A. Fernandez, principal of Bernstein Global Wealth Management, will serve as luncheon chairmen. The keynote speaker will be John Wetenhall, Ph.D., M.B.A, a nationally-known museum management expert and current MAM interim director. Wetenhall’s address, titled “Museums for the Future – Now,” will discuss how museums are handling the current financial crisis and will look ahead to how Miami may be positioned to lead the next generation of cultural institutions. Wetenhall belongs to the Association of Art Museum Directors and serves on the boards of the American Association of Museums and the U.S. National Committee of the International Council of Museums.

Its attorneys have provided invaluable and extensive pro bono legal advice and trustee leadership to the museum since 1988.

Knight Foundation Names Dennis Scholl as VP of Arts

Knight Foundation Names Vice President of Arts
Renowned Arts Philanthropist and Contemporary Collector
Dennis Scholl Will Expand Knight’s Cultural Arts Program Nationwide
Dennis Scholl , Miami program director for the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, will take on a new role as vice president / arts to develop a nationwide cultural arts program for Knight.
Scholl, a longtime arts advocate who joined Knight in 2009, will work with leaders in key communities around the country, where the Knight brothers owned newspapers, to fund innovative cultural programs that enhance community engagement. Those Knight communities are: Akron, Ohio; Charlotte, N.C.; Detroit, Mich.; Macon, Ga.; Miami, Fla.; Philadelphia, Pa.; San Jose, Calif.; and St. Paul, Minn.
In Miami, Scholl currently leads the Knight Arts Challenge, a $40 million initiative to unite South Florida through the arts. The program includes $20 million in endowment grants to leading institutions, plus a community-wide competition for the best ideas to transform the local cultural scene. Finalists in the contest’s third round will be named in May.
“Dennis’s passion for the arts, as well as his experience and success as an entrepreneur and art collector, makes him the perfect person to expand Knight’s support of the arts nationwide,” said Alberto Ibargüen, president and CEO of Knight Foundation. “He will identify opportunities for cultural enrichment and offer new and effective strategies to use the arts to inform and engage communities.”
Scholl’s first priority will be to visit Knight communities on a “listening tour,” meeting with cultural leaders and representatives from cultural institutions and arts councils to begin to determine needs and encourage cultural momentum in targeted areas.
“The expansion of Knight Foundation’s arts program is a great opportunity to use the arts to enrich people’s lives and unify entire communities,” Scholl said. “I’ve already witnessed the uplifting impact a vibrant arts scene can have on communities, even in a difficult economic environment.”
From philanthropist to art collector to filmmaker, Scholl’s role in the arts is broad. A renowned contemporary art collector for more than 30 years, Scholl has led local and national philanthropic efforts in the visual arts. Scholl served as founding chair of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum’s Photography Committee, the Tate Modern’s American Acquisitions Committee and the Miami Art Museum’s Collectors Council. He has also served on the boards of the Aspen Art Museum, the Miami Museum of Contemporary Art, and as chair of Locust Projects, an alternative art space in Miami. Since its inception, Scholl has also served on the Host Committee of Art Basel Miami Beach.
Scholl earned a regional Emmy nomination in 2009 as a cultural correspondent for Plum TV, a resort-based television network with eight stations across the United States.
A founder of the international wine venture Betts & Scholl, he previously practiced law, worked as a C.P.A. and restored 20 historic Art Deco properties on South Beach, contributing to the island’s rebirth.
Scholl received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Florida International University and a law degree from the University of Miami.

Pecha Kucha Gardenovation at Fairchild 4/25/10

For the first time, Pecha Kucha—an event for designers and innovators to meet, network, and show their work in public—joins Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden’s Food and Garden Festival Sunday, April 25th at 1PM. The panel titled GARDENOVATION: Returning to Your Nature showcases seven of South Florida’s nature inspired artists, designers, and architects who creatively challenge traditional ideas about garden design, technique, and interaction with nature. With 20 Power Point slides shown for 20 seconds each, the panelist will share how nature has inspired them in their work and in return allowed them to learn about their own nature in the process.

About Pecha Kucha
Pecha Kucha was conceived in Tokyo in February 2003 by architects Mark Dytham and Astrid Klein as an event where young designers could meet, network and show their work in public. Over time, it has evolved into a massive celebration of creativity, with events regularly being held in 300 cities including Miami. Last year, more than 6,000 presentations were hosted at over 600 Pecha Kucha events. Drawing its name from the Japanese phrase for the sound of conversation (“chit chat”), the Pecha Kucha format is simple—20 images x 20 seconds—and designed to keep presentations concise and moving at a rapid pace. 101/Exhibit Presents Artist Marcus Antonius Jansen Solo Exhibition Zeitgeist Opening 5/8/10

101/EXHIBIT PRESENTS ARTIST MARCUS ANTONIUS JANSEN SOLO EXHIBITION, “ZEITGEIST”
WHO: 101/exhibit proudly presents “ZEITGEIST,” a solo exhibition by internationally renowned painter Marcus Antonius Jansen. Jansen will exhibit large and small-scale works that carry us into the shadows of the 21st century. With a keen awareness of his surroundings, Jansen creates a surreal, urban-like atmosphere filled with subconscious revelations that foretell a future fraught with consequence. Violent brushstrokes, changing textures, and instinctive contrast of color reflect an explosive spontaneity that is the direct, raw effect of emotion.
Noted art historian Jerome A. Donson, who worked with many painters in the past, such as Robert Rauschenberg, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and Franz Kline, states, “Jansen’s paintings are reminiscent of the Ash Can school. There will be many followers in this style of work, but there will be only one Marcus Jansen.”
Jansen’s intellectually provocative and paradoxical work encourages discourse among viewers. Inspired by political and social events of today, he paints his own interpretations as he tries to separate truth from fiction in a world of increasing disinformation. His paintings ask us to look at the world in a new way and to consider not only our interdependence but also the universal nature of our existence. We are forced to recognize the repercussions of our own apathy and then ask ourselves, “What are my responsibilities and how much am I willing to sacrifice?”
Jansen continues to remind us that progress has a price. In his most recent work, the streets are filled with the crumbling infrastructure of a previous generation. Isolated figures walk in the aftermath without refuge from the surveillance of new world technology. Spotlights illuminate the scenery, as the stage is set for a virtual wasteland rich in metaphorical imagery.
The themes that run through Jansen’s work are vast in scope but are indicative of his insightful ability to see how they correlate. Genetically modified food, increased surveillance, the degradation of education, corporate greed, and global dominance are just a few of these themes. He brings our attention to the things we would normally overlook, while reminding us that within our struggle resides beauty.
WHEN: Opening reception with Marcus Antonius Jansen
Saturday, May 8, 2010
7:00 – 10:00 p.m.
Exhibition on view until June 8, 2010
WHERE: 101/exhibit, 101 NE 40th Street, Miami, FL 33137

ABOUT THE ARTIST: Marcus Antonius Jansen’s sweeping urban landscapes show a unique display of apocalyptic dreamscapes from the artist’s imagination. His delivery is a sophisticated blend of complex overlapping layers and compositions. Marcus Jansen is a world traveler who spent his childhood living in New York City and Germany. He joined the Armed Forces and eight years later discharged and transformed his life from a Gulf War Veteran to an internationally sought after painter. His work can be found in important art museum collections such as The Moscow Museum of Modern Art (MMOMA), The Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art and The National Taiwan Museum of Fine Art. Jansen’s art commissions include Ford Motor Company and more recently, Warner Brothers, Hollywood and FIFA World Cup TM 2010 in South Africa.

ABOUT THE GALLERY: 101/exhibit is a unique space dedicated to showcasing provocative art and, as such, will provide an ideal backdrop for Fleisher and his work. By pushing boundaries and dissecting the predictable, the gallery is quickly gathering a strong following of fine art tastemakers and trailblazers. Owned and operated by Jerome Shaw, Sloan Schaffer and Adam Wolfson, 101/exhibit strives to provide a dynamic gathering place unrestricted by era, locale, or convention. 101/exhibit is located at 101 NE 40th Street, in the heart of Miami’s Design District. For more information on the exhibition or 101/exhibit, call (305) 573- 2101 or visit www.101exhibit.com.

Humberto Castro Draw-Wings 1990-2010 at Cremata Gallery 4/16/10

EVENT INFO
Humberto Castro:”DRAW-WINGS:1990-2010″
April 16th ,2010, 7:30 pm – 10:30 pm
Cremata Gallery

Humberto Castro belongs to the 1980’s generation of Cuban artists. Born in Cuba in 1957, he has lived in exile in Paris (for ten years) and in Miami and New York since 1989. His existential language is based on the use of the stylized human figure; the treatment and context of which transmits an array of messages ranging from the political denunciation to the purely poetic.
Humberto Castro “Draw-Wings: A Retrospective 1990-2010” presents a vision of Castro’s work, which includes a selection of drawings done in Paris, and various large format more recent pieces done in Miami. Painted in a monochromatic mode with shades of whites, grays, and blacks, his compositions display an innate elegance, making them palatable and even lyrical at times. Humberto Castro is a master at capturing metamorphosis: his svelte figures seem to endlessly evolve from ethereal beings to earthlings. This thematic fusion imbues the work with an alluring, visionary quality.
During the last two decades, Humberto Castro held triumphant solo exhibitions in Spain, France, Germany, Italy, England, Poland, Check Republic, Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela, Mexico, USA and Canada.

Annette Recommends Tonino Lamborghini Tonino Lamborghini Caffe Corsa in The Village at Gulfstream Park

Tonino Lamborghini Caffe Corsa in The Village at Gulfstream Park is a really wonderful Italian restaurant.    The staff was outstanding, the food was amazing and the prices were very good, expectally for the quality of food you receive.

Okay here we go, first they brought over a basket of bread and three sauces, olive oil with balsamic vineger, sun-dried tomato, and a herb cheese.  The first course was an arugula and parmesan salad with a lemon dressing, and I have to say this was one of the best salads I have had, it was very light and really, really good.

And then next we had a meat, cheese and marinated vegetable plate with baby artichokes, eggplant caponata, proscuitto di parma, salami, fresh paramesan and goat cheese with bread, seaved with Mandra Rossa Nero D’Avola red wine from Sicilla. I have to say that the fresh paramesan was so good I think I ate almost all of it by myself, the eggplant caponata was amazing, all of it was so good, tried not to eat to much still had more to come.

Then we had a sample of three differnet pastas. First was my favorite, the Fettucin Ai Funghi Misti (fettuccine with mix wild mushrooms and truffle oil), Ravioli Di Zucca (butternut squash ravioli with butter and sage) and Gnocchi Al Pesto Di Zucchini E Ragout Di Gamberi (potato gnocchi with zucchini pesto, shrimp ragout and grape tomato). We were served a Blackstone Merlot with the pasta. All three pastas where outstanding and amazing.

Then we had the Branzino Al Forno (roasted mediterranean sea bass, lemon artichokes, asparagus). The way it was prepared you could taste the sea bass and it was so good, the asparagus where cooked just right, a little Al dente and the flavor was awesome.

Okay now for dessert, we had the Italian cheese cake, made with Ricotta cheese, I loved it!  It was different then the New York Style cheesecakes I am used to,  but I have to say I think I may like this style better.  We also had a Vanilla Bean Custard (I cant remember the name) with berries. It was AMAZING, very light and so yummy. We where served a Pinot Grigio from Sicila that went with dessert beautifully.

Addendum from James: Tonino Lamborghini Caffe Corsa is an excellent value for the money. From the name, Lamborghini, of course I assumed that it would be pricey, but actually the prices are very reasonable, more in the range of a family restaurant. Entrees range from around $15 to $25, pizzas are about $13 to $18, and the goodly sized salads are $10 to $15. However, the food is so much better than the prices indicate. Many of the ingredients are sourced directly from Italy. Much of the menu items are handmade on site and you can really tell the difference in taste.

I would call Tonino Lamborghini Caffe Corsa homestyle Italian food. Food as if you were in Italy visiting your Italian grandmother. It does have a bit of a world-fusion twist to it, as well. Many of the items will be unfamiliar to the average diner, but the staff is extremely knowledgeable, so be sure to ask them about the food. Highly recommended.

City Of Miami Beach Is Proud To Support Miami Beach Gay Pride Festival As An Event Sponsor 4/17/10

CITY OF MIAMI BEACH IS PROUD TO SUPPORT MIAMI BEACH GAY PRIDE FESTIVAL AS AN EVENT SPONSOR
25/7 Street Team to March in Parade; Expo Booth to Hold Drawing

Miami Beach is Proud. So proud, in fact, that the city needs an extra hour each day to tell its LGBT residents and visitors that it’s one of the most accepting and diverse cities in the world. That’s the message behind “Miami Beach Proud 25/7,” the theme of the city’s sponsorship of the Second Annual Miami Beach Gay Pride, Saturday, April 17, 2010.
“Miami Beach has a long and strong history of acceptance and progressive attitudes toward the LGBT community,” said City Manager Jorge M. Gonzalez. “In addition to being a top destination for LGBT travelers, we have a proud history of supporting our LGBT residents and businesses, including a domestic partnership registry, a Gay Business Development Committee, and one of the strongest human rights ordinances on record of any city.”
For the Miami Beach Gay Pride Parade, which kicks off at noon on Ocean Drive from 5th to 15th Streets, Gonzalez said the city will participate by fielding a street team, led by legendary drag diva Miss Elaine Lancaster, and complete with a large banner and body-painted marchers harnessed to giant “Miami Beach Proud 25/7” balloons. Members of the street team will also interact with spectators along the parade route and distribute 25/7 Proud fans, temporary tattoos and sunscreen samples, all designed to remind residents and visitors that there’s so much shopping, dining, staying, playing and discovering in Miami Beach they need an extra hour.
Following the parade, and until 6 p.m., the City of Miami Beach will have a major presence at the Gay Pride Expo on the sands of Lummus Park between 10th and 14th Streets. In addition to temporary tattoos, fans and sunscreen samples for visitors to the city’s Proud 25/7 booth, Pride-goers can register for a grand prize drawing for two round-trip airfares, courtesy of the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau, and two VIP tickets to New York Pride’s Dance on the Pier, Sunday, June 27, courtesy of the City of Miami Beach.
Finally, for those who want to share their favorite “Proud 25/7 moment” – or any Miami Beach 25/7 moment for that matter – the City is hosting a Facebook photo contest where the winner will receive a two-night stay and spa treatments from the Shore Club. To enter the photo contest, log onto www.miamibeach25-7.com, click on the Facebook link at the bottom of the page, and upload a photo to the Miami Beach 25/7 fan page.
To develop the Proud 25/7 campaign, the City of Miami Beach again partnered with Cre8tiv Juice Group to develop branding strategy, and The Treister Murry Agency for public relations and social marketing. Both firms are based in Miami Beach.

Photographs of a Dance Performance at The Cando Arts Coop on 4/11/10

A dance presentation inspired by the space and work of the CANDO Arts Co-op on Sunday, April 11, 2010.  It’s Happening… was a collage of experiences and interpretations, reflecting on the work of Miami artists: Deborah Weed, Dena & Stewart Stewart, Lucinda Linderman, Paula Turk, AnneFaye Poole, and James Broderick. 7 young international and local choreographers, all students and alumni of the New World School of the Arts dance program, came together to create a physical second look at art. They explore the textures, perceptions of, and reactions to the ideas and images presented at the CANDO Arts Co-op. For the better gallery, click here.

IamYourVillain and Hometeam-Music presents a screening of Suite for Ma Dukes at The Standard Spa Miami Beach 4/14/10

IAmYourVillain, with Hometeam-Music, presents a screening of “Suite for Ma Dukes” produced by Mochilla in honor of the release of the Timeless Concert Series 3 DVD box set release.
“Timeless: The Composer/Arranger Series” is the name of a concert series that was created in homage to the composer/arrangers who have influenced hip-hop in the most literal and profound ways. Timeless was conceived by production house Mochilla in Los Angeles during February and March 2009 and included the performances of over 150 musicians in front of ecstatic sold out crowds. These three historic events were recorded and filmed in exacting detail with Mochilla’s unmistakable style.
“Suite for Ma Dukes” is the second DVD of the series celebrating the music of producer, J Dilla. Composed and arranged for a 60 piece Orchestra by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson feat. special guests Bilal, Dwele, Posdnuos, Talib Kweli and more. This premiere performance is still on the minds of many. Mixed and mastered by legendary Grammy award winning producer/mixer, Bob Power. The man behind hundreds of pop and jazz recordings for such artists as Erykah Badu, D’Angelo, De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest and more, he had also worked with Dilla while he was alive. Hip hop has never sounded or looked like this, welcome to a new era, a new scale and a new sound. Part of the proceeds of all Suite for Ma Dukes performances and recordings will go towards Maureen “Ma Dukes” Yancey and the heirs to the Dilla Estate.
The screening takes place on Wednesday, April 14th, 2010 at The Standard Spa Miami Beach (located at 40 Island Avenue, Miami Beach, FL 33139) starting at 9:00PM.

Sea, Shells and Sun at CityLoftArt Miami Design District 4/10/10

SEA, SHELLS and SUN an ecologic approach of Art
CityLoftArt Miami Design District – Saturday, April 10th. 2010, 7-10pm

Ingrid KAUFMANN is a fresh, pure and ecologic inspired young Swiss-Argentinian artist.
She lives in Geneva where the Alps mountain-chain is as impressing as the deep cold lakes are. Switzerland is surrounded by France, Germany, Austria and Italy and the quality of life is essentially due to the respect of this imposing nature and the products of the earth, excellent food and clean wines which are rare enough not to be exported anywhere. This respect is reflected as well in the human inter-relations, locals and versus visitors to those ancient towns, full of serenity and history.
Enjoy Ingrid’s serious and authentic artwork, beautiful acrylic paintings on hand-cut-out wood.

Pachi Giustinian Watch The Stars And From Them Learn Solo Debut Spinello Gallery 4/10/10

Pachi Giustinian | Lluvia, Detail [2010] | Tinsel | 12′ x 30′
SPINELLO GALLERY: 155 NE 38th Street, No. 101, Miami, Florida – 33137
SOLO DEBUT: Pachi Giustinian| “Watch The Stars And From Them Learn”
OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday, April 10th, 7-10pm

Spinello Gallery is proud to announce the solo debut exhibition of Argentine-native Pachi Giustinian, “Watch The Stars And From Them Learn.” The all-encompassing environment will feature paintings and experimental mix media installations.

Giustinian seeks the splendor and allure contained in the dynamic composition of light. Colors are of particular interest to her, as they relate to sensations, feelings, sound, and time. Her work is created by captivating found objects that draw attention to her by means of color and shape. Physical properties such as light absorption, reflection, and emission become directly associated with objects, materials, and light sources. By abstracting mundane objects from their everyday use, Giustinian transforms them to highlight their visual characteristics and challenge the structure of our subjective color experience.

Giustinian explains, “Finding meaning in the forgotten and trivial allows this accident to occur; thus creating a newly found visual beauty. This pertinent error brings about an experimental object that has been bestowed new meaning. The modification and definition of these objects produce a new significance in their mere existence.”

Opening Reception: Saturday, April 10th, 2010 / Exhibition through May 1st, 2010.

MICHAEL FLOMEN
Inside Out
Inside Out marks the first time Michael Flomen creates an environment with his photographic works, which continue to be a dialogue with nature. Since his 2006 exhibition at the gallery, Teeming, Flomen has experimented further into the elemental and phenomenal worlds in nature revealing visions and experiences we seldom see and feel in our increasingly expanding destruction and dominance of the planet. His new Scuptarama, a section of an abandoned building, is a stage to place and provoke the viewer of where we are, who we are, and what we are doing.
Also included in the exhibition are several unique gelatin silver photogrammes from the series Littoral Zone and his most recent photographs from the series Crunchtime. The image, Genesis 15, 2009, is a photogramme of what one can consider as a moment of creation, a new hope in our evolution.
Flomen’s work has been exhibited extensively in Canada, the United States and abroad. It can also be found in public collections throughout the world, such as the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.

STERZ
Naïve
Sterz
In my work, lines of action help me generate drawing intuitively as well as through shapes and patterns found in many walks of life and cultures. Whether this process emerges from an obsessive compulsive disorder is a legitimate question. Ultimately, though, my goal is to relax viewers and to provoke in them an almost hypnotic state through the explorations of multiple, interconnected forms.

Sterz uses subjects of natural phenomena, typically light, color and movement for his installations. Intended always to accommodate the viewer and elicit a spontaneous aesthetic response, Sterz directs the gaze towards the infinite variety and power of the natural world. His use of industrial materials and installation techniques give the work a playful, childlike approach; yet recede in the presence of the subject matter – the reminder of nature’s presence within and without the self. The intention is to stimulate emotion with visual information.
Sterz exhibits his site-specific installations throughout North America, Europe and the Caribbean. He has participated in numerous international art fairs including Art Basel and received grants such as from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation.

Line of Action
In these pieces I am not trying to dazzle with brilliance, baffle anyone with long winded rhetoric, or generate dialogue via shock art. I just want to make work that can be enjoyed with no exclusions. These pieces are all hand drawn and the backgrounds are either water color, oil paints, or more pen work. As time passes the foundations of my work have stayed the same, yet new ideas and methods are constantly being implemented in an attempt to make each piece unique.

Photographs of Johnnie Walker Tasting at The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts on 4/8/10

Johnnie Walker Tasting at The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday, April 8, 2010.  I had so much fun, the food was amazing.  They had cheese, hummus, fruit and bread setup outside and then they where passing around hot food, the spring roll was my favorite.  They had a really good crowd very boisterous during the presentation, it was a lot of fun.  And of course the whiskey was really good, my favorite was the Red Lablel, but we got to taste, Black, Red, Green, Gold and Blue Labels, all i got to say is we had an awesome time. Christy Gast Batty Cave Opening Reception at Gallery Diet 4/9-10/10

174 NW 23 Street, Miami, Fl 33127
info@gallerydiet.com

The stark, wailing tones of the artist’s voice punctuate a desolate landscape in Christy Gast’s video installation Batty Cave. Folklore, conjecture and a Dust Bowl aesthetic evoke a narrative of tenderness and desperation in a series of gestures and images that come together like a flipbook to tell us a story of ecological doom, escapism and partnership. Filmed on a desert mountain where two men, expecting a flood of Biblical proportions, built a dusty ark, the artist’s hands form pictograms with scraps of rusty metal, broken glass and chipped rock on an even more humble stage. Creating a densely layered tableau of imagery and sound, a narrative is teased out of the monuments to folly left in the barren landscape. Pulling influence from the history of sound art, photography, and film, Batty Cave will be presented as the corner stone for Christy Gast’s first solo exhibition at Gallery Diet.

Ms. Gast graduated with an MFA from Columbia University in 2004. She lives and works in Miami, Florida and has exhibited previously at The Bass Museum of Art, Artists Space, Exit Art, and the PS1 Contemporary Art Center. Her performative work was included in RoseLee Goldberg’s Performa 07 and she has presented several projects at Andrea Zittel’s High Desert Test Sites. Ms. Gast’s work has been written about in publications such as ArtUS, The New York Times and rhizome.org. Christy Gast will be exhibiting in the Project Space of the de la Cruz Collection during Art Basel Miami Beach 2010.

Batty Cave will be the 13th invitational exhibition at Gallery Diet. Gallery Diet represents five emerging and mid-career artists including Brian Burkhardt, Charley Friedman, Richard Höglund, Abby Manock, and Daniel Milewski. Exhibitions from the gallery have and are scheduled to travel to institutions such as The University of Wyoming Art Museum (Brian Burkhardt ’09), the Benton Museum at the University of Connecticut (Abby Manock, ’10 forthcoming), and MARTE in El Salvador (Abby Manock, ’10 forthcoming).

Registration begins at 8pm SHARP and the event will begin at 9pm. If you are still in line and not registered by 9pm, you will be unable to compete, but you may participate. As a result, latecomers will be unable to compete for the winnings. The bottom line is: please arrive on time!
Here’s how it works:
The wine for this tasting is Merlot. The Merlot grape is a close cousin to Cabernet Sauvignon in many respects. It is lower in tannins and makes wines that mature faster and are softer in texture. Merlot is often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon in order to soften the blend. At its best, Merlot makes a wine that is dry, rich in flavor and smooth as it finishes in your throat. At its worst, Merlot makes wine that is dry but thin in taste and texture, and not very pleasant to consume. Most of what you will come across are likely to be of pretty good quality.
Each team of 2-3, must bring 3 bottles of the EXACT SAME MERLOT. For example, a team may bring 3 bottles of Maori Point Merlot 2006. Remember, it’s 3 bottles total per team and teams can consist of 2 to 3 people.
If you are alone and need to be part of a team to participate, let us know in your RSVP, and we will try to pair you up with someone else.
Also, please remember to think of a team name before arriving!
Food will NOT be served other than cheese and bread. Eat before arriving, or you may pay for it.
We NEED volunteers! If you are inclined, please donate your time to help in a great cause. We will need people to host, clean, prepare the wine for tasting and take score. If you would like to help, please let us know. Volunteers will be exclusively treated to a post-event celebration. TBA.
Upon arrival, the teams will first register. Subsequently, all 3 bottles will be given to the volunteers, who wrap two bottles to conceal the wine’s label. The wrapped bottles will have a number randomly assigned to them and will then be set out for tasting. The third bottle will be left unopened and will not be tasted or displayed.
Each team will be given a card and assigned to a specific group (A or B). The team will then participate in tasting the wine from their group. All the numbered wines for each group will be displayed on the board. At the end of the tasting period, each team must write down the number ranking of his or her favorite wine and least favorite wine. Cards will be collected and selections tallied.
The team that brought the top wine will take home 75% of the unopened bottles of wine. The second place team will take home 25% of the unopened bottles. The team that brought the least favorite bottle of wine will take back his or her unopened bottle of wine.
If 2 (or more) teams bring the same wine, it shouldn’t matter. The rankings can still differ depending upon the temperature of the wine, how it was stored, how long it has been open, etc.
Please remember, teams can consist of UP TO 3 PEOPLE ONLY. If, for example, 4 people wish to participate, they would be considered 2 teams; thus, they will need to bring 6 bottles to enter the event. This rule will be STRICTLY enforced at the door.
Finally, if you prefer to drink out of glasses, bring your own glass as you will be able to clean your glass between tastings. We will have plastic cups available for those who do not bring a wine glass.

WE WILL RAFFLE OFF A TWO-NIGHT STAY AT THE RIVIERA HOTEL SOUTH BEACH FOR THOSE WHO BECOME 1 IN 1,000 AND EXISTING 1 IN 1,000 MEMBERS. Raffle courtesy of the South Beach Group and Riviera Hotel management.

We look forward to seeing you and please arrive on time or you will miss the competition!
MBVWS
REMEMBER THE 3 GOLDEN RULES:

2) Bring 3 of the EXACT SAME wines per team!!
3) Read and understand the rules BEFORE arriving.

La Dama Macbeth by La Tati and Miguel Canas with Ballet Flamenco La Rosa 5/1/10

Ballet Flamenco La Rosa, an international Flamenco company based in Miami, is pleased to announce the world premiere of La Dama Macbeth, a flamenco Ballet inspired by the great Shakespearian Tragedy Macbeth. Ballet Flamenco La Rosa brings to life the classic themes of ambition, passion, loyalty, betrayal, rivalry, righteousness and greed, using Flamenco as a language to interpret the characters and relationships in this great play.

This production will incorporate live music, created and arranged by guest guitarists and singers from Spain in collaboration with company dancers and choreographers. Artists from the U.S, Latin America and Spain, led by the world renowned master teacher, choreographer and soloist La Tati in the title role, and with one of Spain’s most sought after male dancers, Miguel Cañas, as Macbeth, bring to this production the spellbinding and earthy power of Flamenco dance at its best. With its spectacular footwork, precise athleticism and vibrant energy, Flamenco is at once sensual and spiritual, raw and refined, and filled with both restrained passion and electrifying release, making it a powerful language to interpret this timeless work.Under the direction of Ilisa Rosal, a stellar cast of international artists will create the characters of Shakespeare’s drama.

The production will debut on Saturday May 1 at the Gusman Center for The Performing Arts 174 E Flagler St. Miami, Fl. at 8:00 pm as part of the Miami Dance Festival.

Ballet Flamenco La Rosa, also known as La Rosa Flamenco Theatre, is a professional company dedicated to Flamenco as an ever-evolving art form. The innovative and creative dancers of Ballet Flamenco La Rosa present Flamenco dance in a theatrical setting, expanding the art form beyond traditional limits to reach and enlighten students and audiences with its beauty and magic. A Miami based non-profit dance company, Ballet Flamenco La Rosa Flamenco has performed to sell out crowds and received critical acclaim in both the artistic mainstream and in the “Tablaos” (Flamenco Clubs) of Little Havana since 1985. Since then, the company has grown to a National and International reputation, with its pure Flamenco works, cutting edge cross- cultural collaborations and ground breaking dramatic Flamenco Ballets. The company offers audiences performances and workshops throughout it concert season, as well as daily classes for children and adults at all levels with this project, Master Classes will be offered with La Tati and Miguel Cañas, during the week preceding this performance.

Ballet Flamenco La Rosa Artistic Director Ilisa Rosal, and company singer/guitarist Paco Fonta, will present a lecture/demonstration on the Jewish Roots of Flamenco, as one of many offerings of the Guava Rugelach Festival at Temple Israel of Greater Miami.

A brief history of the development of the art of Flamenco and the influences that Jewish music and the Jewish experience in Spain had on the art form will be discussed, with examples of the music and vocals to illustrate.

PACO FONTA * SINGER AND GUITARIST
Paco Fonta met Ballet Flamenco Director Ilisa Rosal in Madrid in the early 1980’s when they worked together at tablaos and festivals for several years.

When Ms. Rosal founded Ballet Flamenco La Rosa in 1985, Paco Fonta was under contract to a local flamenco club, and he joined the company. They have worked together ever since on the many interesting projects the company has produced and created a great following for the high quality and pure excitement and beauty of their work.

Mr. Fonta is a rare talent in that he has mastery of both the guitar and singing, and his performances give the public a unique and valuable insight into this style of music. Mr. Fonta is in demand as a singer and guitarist for Flamenco companies throughout the U.S., and has started his own group Siempre Flamenco.
