Lique Miami-A Refreshing New Waterfront Dining By Betty Alvarez

Photo 1-001

I arrived to this quaint restaurant in North Miami which I have only heard about, Lique. This waterfront dining spot is owned by restauranteurs Peter Cumplido and Alex Podolhy who are also behind Fort Lauderdale’s Sweet Nectar. This soon-to-be hot spot has Executive Chef Renalto Medeiros at the helm and I was about to embark on a never-before breathtaking dining experience in a chilly night but that did not stop me.

When I entered the restaurant I realized that I have been here before when it was Rouge Waterfront Dining where everything was red. But this time around, the restaurant is transformed into what it seems an enchanted garden with luxurious white decor furniture, greenery all over, the contemporary pieces that was all over. The decor is truly spectacularly very fresh and inviting. We sat down to our table to begin our journey.

Our dining experience was by candlelight. A nice touch for a romantic experience if you are dining with a loved one. In my case, I was dining with one of my best friends so that did not happen. LOL! I ordered a nice Pinot Grigio and she ordered a nice fruity tall glass drink that our waiter recommended. I was jealous as her glass was bigger than mine! When we were hended our menu it was unique as it was a wood platform wit the menu attached and the logo of the restaurant on the back. It was great as everything was on one page.

Appetizers and small plates is what we suggested therefore it did not disappoint. First serving was the Truffle Big Eye Tuna Carpaccio. I wanted something healthy but nice to start therefore the Tuna was a nice healthy alternative. What a delight! The truffle made the Tuna stand out as all my taste buds sky-rockted. It gave it a distinct flavor. Then came the Bone Marrow-a plate of 4 big oxtail bones filled with shredded beef with toasted bread besides each bone. A true delight to savor.

If the Bone Marrow is too much for you, the Beef Cheek Toast would be more appropriate as it has the same shredded beef on top of a toasted bread. Another real treat is the Escargot Tortellini. A plate of 4 tortellini smothered with creamy sauce with bits of bacon was the utmost satisfaction that we got. It was my first time in a long time that I tried escargot but it actually tasted like beef. Tasty and delicious!

Deconstructed Apple Pie-001

Lastly, we just had to have dessert therefore our waiter suggested the apple pie but this was not any ordinary apple pie. This was a Desconstructed Apple Pie. The pie was served with 4 fluffy pastries on one side, cinnamon ice cream in one jar and the apple filling in another jar. One had to place all of these items in the plate. It was delish and proved that by this time we were completely full.

Other than the plates we tried, the mediterranean-style cuisine also had more selections of tapas, raw seafood, and a sushi bar. One can sit at the dock area gazing as the marine boats pass by and enjoying a nice night out under the stars. A suitable place to dine with a loved one and/or with friends. A true gem!

Batch Gastropub: New Fall Menu Excites by Betty Alvarez

The first time I’ve been to Batch Gastropub was to celebrate my friend’s birthday party. When I first went in, I was amazed about how casual but comfortable the restaurant is. It’s a gastropub where the menu was approachable and there was an expansive drink list. We celebrated during their happy hour and the placed got packed as soon as I got there. My girlfriends and I indulged in their wonderful happy hour menu and their regular menu. A memorable time for all!

This time around, I got the opportunity to preview their Autumn menu which I was excited to taste. I could not wait for the delectable surprises that this place that had brought my tastebuds into action.

First of all, I was greeted with a cornucopia of cocktail samplings. The one that stood out is the Green Pepper Mojito as I thought it was going to be super sweet but to my surprise it wasn’t. I could taste the green pepper flavor in my mouth but it was not overwhelming to sour my taste of the food that I was about to sample.

Batch gave us two types of menus to choose from for our tasting one that had the house made meatballs or the General Tso’s Cauliflower dish as the starter.

We began with a snack: Salmon Crudo comprised with the House Cured Faroe Island Salmon on top of Florida peaches with Truffled vinaigrette and maldon salt. This small snack was a different experience as I never tasted a salmon on top of a slice of peach before. The salmon taste came to my tastebuds first and then complimented it with the sweet peach infusing both into a nice sweet and delectable light bite.

Then came the starters, the house made meatballs of duck, short rib and pork belly on a sweet potato puree and Serrano ham gave me great delight. The meatballs were warm, soft to chew and the sweet potato puree gave it a good additive to my palate.

The next starter was the Tuna Poke-Peanut Butter “Crumble”, wonton, scallion, and crispy ginger. Although I did not taste the peanut butter but the scallion and the crispy ginger is what stood out of my mind. It was delicious.

For the veggies part, a Batch Kale Salad was served. Now I never had Kale in my life so I was delighted and nervous at the same time in trying this salad comprised of raw kale, hearts of palm, peanuts, strawberry vinaigrette, and parmesan. To my surprise, I loved it. The kale was not overpowering and the vinaigrette made everything come together. Definitely will have to try that salad again next time I go to Batch Gastropub.

Now the main course: The Drunken Short Rib which is a whiskey braised short rib with Vanilla and Sour Mash, Creamy polenta and Cinammon roasted carrots on the side. The meat was so tender that it was falling out of the bone. I could taste the whisky a bit but my memory was the warm, soft, juicy meat that these ribs had. Other than the cinnamon that covered the carrots it was also mixed with a coffee flavored sauce which had a distinctive taste.

The sweets that culminated our experience is the Carnival Donuts-fried dough, powdered sugar, with a warm chocolate ganache and Kahlua syrup. Now these round donuts were the best and my favorite was dumping it in the Kahlua syrup rather than the chocolate ganache. It was so taste was so much richer to my palate.
A very sweet experience to end this preview tasting.

All in all, I can’t wait for this autumn menu to be announced to the general public as Batch Gastropub wants to exemplify the farm to table concept as it is healthier option for everyone but with full of taste. Kudos to Batch Gastropub!

Pied A Terre: Lovely French dining in a tranquil atmosphere by Betty Alvarez

You will never know that tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Miami Beach lies a quaint and dainty hotel in the corner of James Avenue and 17th Street, the Cadet Hotel. This 1941 Art Deco Hotel with 34 rooms and suites is the home to a cozy and elegant restaurant, Pied a Terre. A restaurant with a cuisine like no other.

Pied a Terre prepares healthy french cuisine using classic French techniques used by Michelin-starred restaurants in France today. Their approach to dining incorporates innovative recipes created by seasonal visiting chefs who shares and trains the restaurant’s staff to create recipes especialy for Pied A Terre. Great and different concept.

Our experience started with a refreshing welcome cocktail. Afterwards, Patrick Gruest, Food/Wine consultant explained the different types of dishes and the wine that would most deliciously be a great pair.

For our appetizer, I picked the Fresh Wild Mushroom Risotto. In addition to being the right portion for an appetizer, the outburst of flavor was exceptional. The plate was served hot as the risotto was tender and delicious. The mushroom that complimented it gave its robust flavor. It came with one plantain chip for decor.

As for the entree, I picked the Seabass with Peruvian flavor. I had to try this dish as I am of Peruvian background. The Seabass was very juicy covered with an assorment of Peruvian sauces such as the Aji Amarillo. It also was decorated with tomato, parsley and anchored with Mussels. The meat was tender and melted in your mouth. My dish was paired with a crisp and semi-fruit white wine.

For dessert, the Valhora Chocolate Fondant, a silky smooth chocolate cake with Vanilla ice cream topped with a sweet treat along with rose-shaped strawberries. A great presentation to a tasteful treat. The right portion for the right sweetness. Another guest at the table ordered the chocolate macaroon. Now, I thought they were going to bring the normal small macaroon but boy was I mistaken. It was a huge macaroon with chocolate ice cream on the side with a treat.

All in all the experience was to die for and the ambiance brought a nostalgic memory in me. If you sit in the back table seating for around 10 you can never imagine that you are steps away from 17th Street and Collins Avenue. The curtains really do the trick in hiding it and you feel that you are away in paradise.

It was a pure delight that I want to experience again.

Winter Beauty in South Florida that only Uni K Wax can provide by Betty Alvarez

South Florida is known for its more comfortable temperatures during the winter season. That is why the “snow birds” come to our vibrant town during this season. However, one does not realize that even if the temperature does not fall below freezing, it can cause some discomfort to the skin if not taken care properly. That is where Uni K Wax comes in.

Uni K Wax is one of the pioneers in waxing, providing the cleanest, greenest and fastest waxing experience on the market. It is where I depend on my waxing needs. It’s safe, reliable, and best of all it does not hurt on my experience. One is out of there in minutes depending on the procedure.
The staff is caring and always reliable to the needs of the client. The great thing about Uni K Wax is that they have many locations near my many stops around Miami. One such stop that I had a great experience is the one at The Palms at Town and Country in Kendall. Cary, my waxing specialist who was assigned to me has been working there since the center opened. I did my eyebrows, around my face and bikini area.

The session started with her asking me how I wanted the outcome on each specific area. When that was done, she started the process. She shaped my eyebrows really well along with some areas on my face. I have done many waxes before at other places but I found that Uni k was the safest, painless, and fastest process that I have experience. She was to the point and got it done quickly as she mentioned the more rapid the session is done the better. Afterwards, she placed a small ice pack pouch in the area to soothe the skin. It really helped and it was not freezing cold. This is a new added bonus to the session as Uni K Wax introduced it. I felt so good, clean, and ready to continue to conquer the day. I will definitely ask for her every time I go there now. However, it is best to make an appointment to ensure your session will start on time but walk-ins are always welcomed.

During this Winter, give the your skin an improvement with a great waxing session. Waxing is one of the best ways to effectively exfoliate your skin and help fight against dryness. It encourages a faster turnover of dead skin cells and regular appointments actually help to improve skin condition.

Miami Culinary Tours in South Beach-Great experience for tourists as well as locals alike By Betty Alvarez

I have always heard of Miami Culinary Tours as lovers of food who are new or old to the area walk to different restaurants to taste a piece of Miami’s gastronomic delights. It was not until recently that I got to join this savory tour that really opened my eyes on Miami and its rich culinary history.

First stop: 660 at the Angler’s- I arrived late at the first stop. The restaurant served fresh ceviche and tiradito. For my fellow walkers, it was a great start as it refreshed them as we walked in the hot Miami sun.

2nd Stop: Bolivar Restaurant. We stopped by this Colombian restaurant where each table in our area already had a Reposo cocktail mixed with Colombian beer and a small plate with one empanada colombiana (a deep fried crunchy corn Colombian patty stuffed with shredded beef and potatoes) and Patacones de Pollo (deep fried green plantains topped with shredded chicken with a hot sauce on the side. The sauce was a little bit too much to handle given that I am Peruvian and thank goodness the cold cocktail made it better. However for my fellow table foodies they preferred to be without it. But it was all good and tasty. Our tour guide Anna explained the various other Colombian cuisines that included la bandeja paisa; a typical fusion cuisine Colombian dish containing an oversized amount of food and the wide variety of ingredients, which prevent it from being served on a single regular plate, so it must be served in a platter or a tray. Yum!

In between some stops our tour guide talk about some of the historic buidings of Miami Beach such as the architecture of the Art Deco Hotel and one of the most famous photographed places in the world, the Versace Mansion while we all cooled off in the shade.

3rd Stop: David’s Cafe. This is one of the famous historic Cuban quick stop in Miami Beach. We were greeted by Pastelitos de Guayaba (Guava Pastries) and the famous Cafecito Cubano (Cuban Coffee). It was delish and for my fellow tour friends who were from Ohio it was nothing that they never tasted before. They never had Cuban coffee therefore it was great to see them enjoying a taste of Miami and Cuban history.

4th Stop: Larios on the Beach. After our tour guide Anna told us the history of Cardozo Hotel and how the Estefan Family built their empire in the culinary world, we strolled to Larios on the Beach Pop Up location inside the Cardozo Hotel. Their old location on the 800 block of Ocean Drive is currently being remodeled. Their smaller but yet popular place still serves the same delicacy. Due to the fact that we were all hot from our walking tour our waiter quickly severed us a tall glass of water while some of the fellow foodies ordered cocktails. A good basket of Cuban flattened bread served out of the oven was also brought to our table. Minutes later a small tasting plate of Ropa Vieja (shredded beef), Platanos Maduros (Sweet plantains), Arroz moro (White rice mixed with black beans) came to our table. Delish! This good serving of food was the highlight of our tour. It was overwhelmed with the array of flavors.

As we were going to our fifth stop, we headed to Deco Drive Cigars where Anna was explaining the history of the store as the Cuban cigar maker was sitting inside near the window for everyone to see how he made the cigars. Some of my fellow friends even went inside to buy them. To cool off from the dreaded heat, the rest of us headed almost next door to the Z hotel as we saw a good game of human chess in a lounge area located directly below the pool. If you look up you can see the pool area where some the kid swimmers said hi to us as they had some fun swimming in the depths of the pool.

5th stop: Jerry’s Famous Deli. Haven’t been here for over 2 years, the place has not changed. Formerly the gay disco nightclub Warsaw Ballroom in the 90’s, this deli came to be one of the famous pit stop for a good deli sandwich or meal. A sweet treat was served to us: Raspberry Rugala which is a delicious Jewish pastry.

6th Stop: Blocks Pizza Deli. Located in Washington Avenue, this small and quaint family-owned pizzeria makes delicious pizzas one “block” at a time. They only allow the freshest ingredients, organic seasonal produce, all natural deli meats sliced before you and homemade sauces to top the delicately baked crust. Other than pizzas, they cover all sorts of other cravings with home baked Blocks Pockets and freshly made Salads that also come in a delicious crispy Pocket. For our group experience the owner himself made the Sun-dried Hippie Block Pocket made out of sun-dried tomatoes, feta cheese, baby Spinach, basil pesto, and Kalamata olives. It’s like eating a pocket sandwich. Delish! All healthy and organic. Just the way I like it.

7th and last stop: Milani Gelateria. We headed to the beautiful and lovely Espanola Way where we strolled through the pedestrian walkway looking at all the quaint restaurants until we hit our last stop of the tour, Milani Gelateria. Authentic Italian Gelato. They showed off their gelato machine that contained the sweet and cool treat featuring a pinwheel of different flavors. OMG! We were all hot and could not wait to try a taste of heaven. I had the tropical gelato and it was sweet and creamy. It was a great ending to a hot day where we all learned great things during the food tour.

All in all, we hit seven stops, tried food from all over the country, mingled with people (mainly tourists) from all over the world, and as a local, I felt like a tourist. What a great afternoon and a great experience! I recommend that you should try it out!

Atrio welcomes Miami Spice and other delectable cuisine By Betty Alvarez

Ario Restaurant and Wine Room is located in Conrad Miami Hotel’s Lobby Level 25 showcasing panoramic views of the Miami cityscape and bay. It’s a beautiful restaurant served as an appetizing allure to try the latest culinary delights in the Miami Spice and the a al carte menu.

For starters, a variety of warm bread was served along with an adequate portion plate of orange butter, mango butter, and a splash of Olive oil. We needed a second serving of the oil because the flavor had the perfect touch of what an olive oil needs to have. It was great complimenting the bread. I ordered a crisp Chardonnay. An excellent choice considering the cuisine we were about to eat. The mango butter was a first for me as I never tasted such richness and was a bit sweet. Yes, it did have a mango flavor but not too intense. Created by Chef Virgile Brandel, it was delish start that I had seconds! The orange butter was good but to my palate, it had more of the plain butter taste. Since I am more of an Olive Oil fan, I loved the type they served. It was from the Hacienda G Premium Extra Virgin Olive Oil Blend which made you want to taste some more.

A variety of appetizers was served. From the A la Carte Menu, I ordered the Red Snapper Ceviche infused with Aji Amarillo, Cilantro, Ginger, and Yuzu. From the Miami Spice menu, one of my friends had the the Salmoon & Grouper Carpaccio served with shaved Bottarga & fine herb sorbet and the other had the Goat Cheese Salad with roasted beets and pecans. They both looked tasty and the presentation was excellent. My ceviche was the right portion and a great refreshing starter to wet my appetite for what was about to come.

As we entertained ourselves in the normal buzz of our lives, our entrees came. I ordered the Grilled Grouper dish that came with crispy yucca fries, pickled green papaya salad, and piri piri sauce under it. When I saw the pickled green papaya salad, I was scared. Anything with the word pickled meant to me lots of salt and processed. Although I was surprised when I tasted it. It just did not taste like a pickled green papaya but the onions that accompanied it really made the difference in the taste. The Piri Piri was a red sauce that I tasted with the grilled grouper. My friends ordered the Seared Scallops with Cauliflower mouseline, Cardamom cloud from the Miami Spice Menu. Also the Mushroom Cannelloni with a creamy gorgonzolla sauce also part of the popular annual menu. OK I tasted a bit of each. The seared scallops had a nice cooked flavor while the mushroom cannelloni was a warm pasta with the right portion.

Now lastly, dessert. An array of selections was served from the Miami Spice menu. Peach Trifle with Amaretto whipped cream layers; Farm Goat Cheesecake with raspberry coulis; Exotic Virgin Daquiri which had a mixture of Passion fruit, mango and kiwi with champagne granite which is more like a sorbet. This last one was rather refreshing and it was like tasting a champagne ice cream. However, the real kicker was the Warm Doughnut Bread Pudding. OMG! I wanted to order one for my own!! Each time I bite into one of these, I was in heaven as I tasted the warm and moist delicacy topped with a honey syrup that is to die for. If you get a chance to get it please do even if it is not in the Miami Spice menu.

Art Basel, another successful year for the art world by Betty Alvarez

The 2012 edition of Art Basel in Miami Beach officially on December 9. Praised by critics, exhibitors and visitors as Art Basel’s most serious presentation in Miami Beach to date, its galleries across the board reported consistent sales throughout the week.

The show, whose main sponsor is UBS, again attracted 50,000 visitors, generating an attendance of 70,000 over the five show days. Art Basel in Miami Beach was visited by over 130 museum and institution groups from across the world. Renowned private collectors from the Americas, Europe and emerging markets returned, and were joined by new collectors from around the globe.

As Art Basel marked its second decade in Miami Beach, more than 250 leading galleries from 31 countries from North America, Latin America, Europe and Asia presented the highest quality of work at the show, underlining its seriousness. Given a particularly strong representation of Modern material at the show, as well as the entry of a dynamic selection of younger galleries – including nine that were newly accepted to the fair from NADA– visitors explored 11 decades and over 110 years of art history within the Miami Beach Convention Center. Additionally, collaborations with local and international partners ensured a diverse and deep program of art events, from Art Basel Conversations and Art Salon to Art Public, Art Video and Art Film, making this edition a celebration of the artists and their galleries.

For the second year running, Art Public, produced in collaboration with the Bass Museum of Art, turned Collins Park into an outdoor exhibition space with large-scale sculpture, video, installation and live performances. For this year’s edition, the sector’s curator Christine Y. Kim, Associate Curator of Contemporary Art (LACMA) and Co-founder, Los Angeles Nomadic Division (LAND) brought even more complex works to Miami Beach and extended the exhibition space into the sky, across which Dave McKenzie’s airplane carrying a banner offering different marriage proposals every day. A highlight of the week, Art Public Opening Night on December 6 was free and open to the public, offering a program of performances by Jason and Alicia Hall Moran with Brandon Ross, My Barbarian and Alex Israel. For more information please visit artbasel.com/public.

Art Kabinett became one of the talking points of the show for connoisseurs. 20 select galleries from the Art Galleries sector of the show curated exhibitions in separately delineated spaces within their booths. This year’s sector presented work by artists including Fiona Banner (Galerie Barbara Thumm), Chuck Close (Two Palms), Jannis Kounellis (Galerie Lelong), Jorinde Voigt (David Nolan Gallery) and Yan Xing (Galerie Urs Meile), and curated shows on General Idea (Esther Schipper); Jacques Villon, Raymond Duchamp-Villon, Marcel Duchamp, Suzanne Duchamp (Francis M. Naumann Fine Art); and Helio Oiticica and Jarbas Lopes (A Gentil Carioca). For more information please visit artbasel.com/kabinett.

For others, Art Positions proved a highlight. Featuring a tight selection of 16 galleries, the sector continued as an exciting platform for collectors, museum directors, critics and art enthusiasts to gain further insight into the work of individual emerging artists. Presentations included: Matt Keegan (Altman Siegel Gallery SF), Pablo Rasgado (Arratia Beer), Nathan Peter (PSM), Leyla Cárdenas (Galería Casas Riegner), Colby Bird (Fitzroy Gallery), Christian Flamm (Galeria Fonti), Felipe Arturo (La Central), Irene Kopelman (Labor), Paulo Vivacqua (Galeria Laura Marsiaj), Julieta Aranda (Galerie mor.charpentier), Atsushi Kaga (Mother’s Tankstation), Asli Cavusoglu (NON Gallery), Ivan Seal (RaebervonStenglin), Andra Ursuta (Ramiken Crucible), Latoya Ruby Frazier (Galerie Michel Rein), and Agustina Woodgate (Spinello Projects). For more information on Art Positions, please visit artbasel.com/positions.

With 40 galleries on display, this year’s edition of Art Nova featured work by more than 100
artists from across the world including juxtapositions such as: Yael Bartana, Tal R. and Tom Burr (Sommer Contemporary Art); Tania Pérez Cordova and Nina Beier (Proyectos Monclova); Becky Beasley and Simon Dybbroe Möller (Francesca Minini); Theaster Gates and Angel Otero (Kavi Gupta Gallery); John Gerrard, Michelle Lopez and Hans Schabus (Simon Preston); Brigida Baltar, Lucia Koch and Melanie Smith (Galeria Nara Roesler); Julião Sarmento and Leigh Ledare (Pilar Corrias); Dove Allouche, Jonathan Binet and Jessica Warboys (Gaudel de Stampa); and Hao Liang, Yangjiang Group and Zheng Guogu (Vitamin Creative Space). The sector again became a space of discovery for works fresh from the studio. For a full list of galleries and the artists, please visit artbasel.com/nova.

Also in its second year, Art Video was produced in collaboration with the New World Center and David Gryn of London’s Artprojx. Following its success last year, the free screenings in SoundScape Park on the 7,000-square-foot outdoor projection wall of the Frank Gehry designed building were extended by one additional night of programming and attracted an estimated 1,200 visitors. Showing just over 60 videos, the program was marked by the dusktill- dawn screening of ‘Bliss’ by Ragnar Kjartansson, which was presented in collaboration with MOCA North Miami and the New World Center. For more information please visit artbasel.com/video.

Art Film was again selected by Zurich film connoisseur This Brunner and presented the feature-length documentary film ‘Painters Painting’ (1973) by Emile de Antonio on the New York art scene from 1940 to 1970. For more information please visit artbasel.com/film.

Incan delights, entertainment, and art crafts all enjoyed at Taste of Peru By Betty Alvarez

Taste of Peru’s 3rd Gastronomic Festival definitely gets better every year and this year is no exception. The festival featured more than 100 exhibitors, restaurants, food and beverage providers, hotel, tourism, fashion, arts & crafts, jewelry and real estate from this Incan country. The food is what really brought to me. Not only that the Peruvian South Florida restaurants were present but also restaurants from Peru itself came to this yearly event.

Other than the traditional ceviche, other peruvian delights were Lomo Saltado (chunks of meat, onions, and french fries) served alongside white rice. Aji de Gallina was another favorite consisting of shredded chicken with Peru’s finest yellow sauce complimented with white rice, Arroz Chaufa (Peruvian Chinese rice), Rocoto Relleno (Peru’s hot pepper filled with chicken or meat), Causa (made with potatoes and chicken or tuna), Anticuchos (beef hearts skewers), and for dessert none other than the Picarones (Peruvian doughnuts). Oh my goodness! The tastiness, the crunchiness, the savory food is what I really enjoyed.

At night, guests enjoyed “Noche de Jarana” an after hours party Peruvian style where music by many Peruvian groups and some of the restaurant booths stayed open and the Pisco Sours kept on flowing. The Peruvian Paso Horse show was very entertaining as the “Chalan” Peruvian cowboy delighted the crowd as the horses “danced” with a particular Peruvian folkloric dancer.

It was such a good event and I really enjoyed it. Can’t wait to next year as it will be an even better one!!

Peruvian Food invades Miami with the Opening celebration of MPP Brickell By Betty Alvarez

Downtown Brickell which is no stranger to fine dining establishments and now is about to get a culinary boost Peruvian style as the world renowned Mi Propiedad Privada (A.K.A. MPP) madesits way from Lima to the Magic City in the NEO Vertika Building. MPP celebrated their grand opening of the restaurant that has been awarded accolades for years in Peru. The red carpet event featured a ribbon cutting ceremony with an array of celebrities.

Chef Jose “Coco” Mendoza who is the owner and head chef of MPP in Lima, Peru considers himself a chef who specializes in expressing the sights, sounds, and tastes of Peru through his cuisine. The slogan at MPP Peru is “El sabor de la experiencia” or “The taste of the experience”. MPP’s cuisine is inspired by the ocean and boasts an amazing array of variety. Ceviche is only the tip of the iceberg at MPP. Chef Mendoza’s MPP over the course of 14 years has won countless awards, among them being included as one of a selected few who can use the official “Peru” logo alongside their brand, obtaining a “Bizz Award” and many others to date. MPP is a celebrated restaurant among locals, tourist, and celebrities.

Being only one of five Peruvian franchises to be able to branch outside the limits of Peru, Jose Mendoza quickly reached out to friend and associate Henry Malpartida (Peruvian born and current Brickell resident) to bring their award winning Peruvian cuisine to South Florida. Brickell seemed to be the obvious choice. Its multicultural population and vibrant nightlife is a perfect back drop for MPP’s US unveiling. Mr. Malpartida has a wide network that he has built within the business community will tie into this fabulous new venture, complimenting the established credibility with the Mi Propiedad Privada name. Joining in the venture is Hector Malpartida whom also has an extensive network and has been in South Florida for over a decade. He will join his brother in all efforts for MPP Brickell.

MPP prides itself on delicious food and amazing presentation while never losing its Peruvian essence. MPP Brickell plans to keep in line with its award winning ways as Chef Jose Mendoza has finalized the menu for the South Florida opening. A few of his favorites are the Causas Festival, which contains causa a la olive, with prawn, crabmeat causa and passion fruit causa. Another favorite is the Mixed Carpaccio which boasts thinly cut flounder slices, octopus and seashells, bathed in a sauce of lemon juice al natural with garlic. For the person who is simply looking for the classic ceviche he recommends the “Grandmother’s Ceviche” which is a flounder Ceviche using his grandmother’s recipe.

MPP has garnered worldwide accolades on the shores of the beach in Lima, Peru. The Miami team which features talent straight from Peru is looking forward to sharing their award winning recipes with the South Florida public.

Season’s 52 hosted and exclusive private preview of their Autumn Menu/Wine list By Betty Alvarez

I always love to attend the private tastings of a restaurant as it gives me the opportunity to try out their menu varieties such is the case at Season’s 52. They hosted an exclusive wine dinner at the private event space. What is always different than the others is the live-steam introduction of the new menu from Season’s 52’s Director of Culinary Chef Clifford Pleau and Master Sommelier Goerge Milliotes.

The highlight of the menu was a sneak peak at the exciting new selections for the “Drink them Before their Famous List” selected personally by Goerge.

The cocktail reception included the Vista Hills Orange Pino Gris, Willamette’ 11 paired with Portobello Mushroom Flatbread and double hummus and Sea Salt Lavish. The first course consisted of Farrier Andiron Semillon, Alexander ’09 wine paired with Cider-Glazed Grilled Chicken Skewers. Second Course continued with Avanthia Godello, Valdeorras ’10/’11 paired with Maple Leaf Farms Sesame Duck Salad. The third course was Tillia Bonarda, Mendoza ’11’12 wine paired with All-Natural Piedmontese Steak. Fourth Course (almost there!) was Michael David Petit Petit, Petite Sirah, Lodi ’09/’10 and Glenelly Cabernet Sauvignon, Stellenbosch ’10 wine with Manchester Farms All-Natural Grilled Quail. Obviously, the fifth course was the dessert which was obviously the mini indulgence introducing the Pumpkin Mini indulgence.

A good experience had by all and can’t wait to try this again.

Venue Magazine hosted a lavish soiree as the red carpet was rolled out for Spanish Entertainment Celebrities By Betty Alvarez

I always heard about the Venue magazine parties but never had the privilege to attend one until Sept. 22 when the opportunity came to me. It was humid out but that did not stop me. I have been to Bamboo two times before but forgot how a good club this is. Stars from the Spanish entertainment world lined up the red carpet for this magazine launch cover party. I knew some of them but not all as during the Spanish soap opera hours I am out covering other events.

Beautiful actresses and handsome actors from the TV world posed for photos and were available for interviews. A deluxe goody bag was given to everyone that walked the red carpet and later all the stars had a special section at Bamboo Nightclub. Into the night, the club was getting filled up while specialty cocktails and appetizers were the talk of the night.

Dancing with the stars and spanish Soap opera actor, William Levy made his appearance but I could not find him after he walked the red carpet. A dance performance went underway while the DJ spinned awesome tunes and got the crowd pumped.

It was a wonderful night and can’t wait until the next one!

Bird Road Art Walk continues with great clamor of artists and artworks By Betty Alvarez

Bird Road Art Walk recently named “Miami’s Best Art Walk 2011” by Miami New Times, celebrated once again their monthly gallery night. This time around many galleries opened their doors to the many art lovers.

I was excited as I came from Miami Beach to attend this event and wanted to have a great experience meeting old and new friends in the artworld. My first stop was at Mano’s Art Project Space which was filled with art lovers and supporters of his artwork. The titled exhibition for this month was “Made in the USA” where 15 artists with ties to South Florida collectively create an interpretive, visual perspective for viewers to reflect on what it means to me “made” in the U.S.A.

In the same floor at Mano was Miguel Rodez who unveiled his new Project Art Space Gallery to present top-of-the-line art to collectors and the public at large.
The gallery’s initial show Drawn from Within explores the versatility of the drawing medium and includes feature works in graphite, ink and charcoal. Some of the pieces offered are huge works, with an even bigger bang for the medium, yet, others are seemingly diminutive pieces packing such a massive visual punch that viewers are knocked out of the ballpark.

I then visited my good friend artist Tatiana Castaneda where she was a guest artist at Romero Hidalgo Artist’s Studio. Her wonderful artwork was exhibited to the delight of art goers.

Not too far away was H. Benitez Fine Art Gallery II where renowned artist Humberto Benitez presents a visiting artist group exhibition entitled “Abstracts” in its opening reception. There were pantings from Julio Bordas and Holly Jones; photography by Roxy Sora and the entire exhibition was curated by Lissette Benitez.

Then it came to visit my good artist and photographer friend Monika Zdziebkowska where she was part of Ave 74 300 Artist Showcase, an eclectic mix of local emerging artists all under one roof! Our goal is to exhibit the art works of 300 artists! Painting, photography and sculpture they had it all from what I heard!

All in all Bird Road Art Walk was a success and can’t wait until next month!!!

Swim Week Day 2: Great Fashion at Funkshion, awesome event at W Hotel, breathtaking view at SLS hotel, Kim Kardashian at Delano By Betty Alvarez

Day 2 of this festive week is like no other. Great looking people and models stroll Collins Avenue heading towards or leaving parties and after-parties. The atmosphere is jolting with excitement.

First I wanted to go to W Hotel but my temptations first went to the Funshion Fashion tent where I caught the first glimpse of Ada and Toxic Sadie, Elle & Ella, and Guria. Great models sporting great designer swim suits. The area was packed but I was fortunate enough to have a space for me. The colors and fabrics were all brilliantly made. It made a great night to start.

Then I went to the Salon Allure Opening Night party at the W Hotel poolside. While I was looking for a spot to take my photos, I ran into a PR friend of mine and she placed me in front row. It was very easy to take the photos. What I heard there were about 75 designers that were part of this exclusive fashion show and it was hot. At each interval, the Brazilian drummer excited the crowd for the next line-up. Cocktails were courtesy of Grey Goose. Another great party that his hotel had.

On my way to the Delano, I went to SLS Hotel as they hosted the afterparty for the Make-A-Wish Fashion Show with Niki Poulos. It was my first time at the hotel and it was fabulous. The hotel is gorgeous and I the pool area is spectacular. The big rubber ducky was a no miss to guests as they enter the area. Smartwater sponsored the event.

Lastly, I made my stop at the Delano where Midori presented Kim Kardashian party hosted by Ocean Drive Magazine. The backdrop for Midori where decorated in small bottle of Midori which gave it a good look and Midori infused cocktails were the special of the day. However, I did see Kim Kardashian but then I saw a big lighted camera on the far corner of the pool area. As I headed over there, she was there. She gave a speech thanking everyone who came and was surprised by an artist who painted a portrait of hers in top speed. The place was kicking and so were the people.

Great 2nd night out!!

Swim Week Day 1-Mercedes Benz Kick off Party at Raleigh, Villa Azur at Avant Gallery, Peroni Fashion Show for Funkshion and Ocean Drive Magazine Cover Party at Delano by Betty Alvarez

It’s time once again for our schedule to be crazy as Swim Week is upon us and by now everyone should get loads of invite or peruse websites (such as this one) for the latest great events around Miami Beach.

First, I headed to the Raleigh Hotel to the kick off party of Mercedes Benz Fashion week. Haven’t been in a long time and its breathtaking views accompanying the enormous pool area gave a great backdrop to this wonderful event. Fashionistas from all over the world congregated in its enormous patio as they posed alongside the Mercedes on display as the official sponsor of Swim Week. Champagne cocktails by Moet Henessy along with delectable appetizers served by the Raleigh Hotel wet any appetite. Great place with great atmosphere!

As I was walking to another gallery, I came upon a big tent between 21st and 22nd Street in Collins-Funkshion Fashion Week. As I came in, a fashion show was already underway: Peroni presents Young Designer Award with Fashion Group International where the finalists designs were presented in the fashion show. The winner will receive a trip to New York City during Fashion Week and the opportunity to meet the internationally known designer Antonio Berardi. Good luck to the winner!!

Then, I strolled close by to the newly opened Avant Gallery. Originally located in Design District, I was pleasantly surprised that they newly opened in the heart of Miami Beach. For this night, they had a cool event named Villa Azur presents “Sin City,” an exhibition of collaborative photography by Hype Williams and John Jansheski. Sexy and provocative artwork decorated the gallery as guests strolled in the many sections that the gallery had.

Lastly, my day ended at the Delano where Ocean Drive Magazine had their Swim cover party where swimsuit models posed for the cameras and an ice bar greeted the guest for a wonderful cocktail reception. During the course of the night, a model in an air bubble was “rolling” around the pool area and in some cases splashing some of guests. It was a fun night to remember for my first day of Swim Week.

South Beach Wine and Food Festival gets better every year By Betty Alvarez

Every year I get the priveledge to attend the South Beach Wine and Food Festival’s Grand Tasting Village and this year it did not disappoint. The day started out a little rainy but thank goodness that it subsided around 11 a.m. Rain, rain go away! I want to eat and drink today!! For those who are not familiar with my yearly routine on this festival, I am going to explain further.

First get there early, somewhere in the midst of 9:30 a.m.-10 a.m.since the area outside the tasting tent opens at 11 a.m. It’s a process on where to park, make the line, get your bag and glass etc. Most important thing is where to park which depending on what time you arrive at Miami Beach could be difficult but if you get there early you can find parking easily via Pay As You Park instead of the overpriced flat fee parking. It will save you a lot of headaches if you plan to leave as soon as you are done for the day.

Then you have to wait in line until the gates open to the tasting area. This is a good opportunity to make your calls, get to know other people or tourists or just wait. Just remember, the people who get in first are the VIP’s with Fast Access cards then for the others, they will get in after.

Once inside the area, there is a cornucopia of seminars, tastings of food and cocktails everywhere you see. And this is before the Grand Tasting tent opens which is at 1 p.m.

When it is close to 1 p.m., once has to be already by the second gate. However, they let the first people in and they get escorted to the second tent. When the gates of the second tent opened, the variety of food and drinks were ready to be devoured.

Food from every restaurant imaginable, wine, spirits, champagne, and deliciously desserts from all kinds have gone through my mouth that day. It was a packed house but what can you expect from South Beach Wine and Food Festival. Truly, this is an even no one has to miss.

I got my fix of food, liquor and seeing friends I have not seen in such a long time. The festival always seem to amaze me from the various decorative settings on either the alcohol and cuisine tables to the free giveaways.

This year was truly another year of great fun, food, celebrities under the great hot sun.

Kudos SOBE Wine and Food Festival! Until next year!!!

Miami Wine and Spirits Expo-in its second year even better than ever By Betty Alvarez

South Florida saw a happy return of the annual Miami Wine and Spirits Expo. The spectacular event debuted last year. This year, it as fully loaded with a slew a great brands and on the heels of the success of their first run, the event was more dynamic and more “Miami” with additional elements, events and surprises.

The show is the brainchild of the seasoned team that has combined their unique experience in the spirits industry and visits to expos all over the world. Upon noticing an obvious void in the marketplace, the choice was made to launch and create a place where all brands would convene, under one roof in true “exhibit” style.

The event was conceptualized and created as an annual trade and consumer event held on Miami as a culmination to delight the taste buds of consumer and educate the trade on “what is out there.” With the show being held at the height of the season, the organizers have aimed once again to brin the world best producers of Beer, Wine and Spirits.

Coconut Grove Arts Festival: A Full Day of Fun, Festivities, and Art to a whole new level By Betty Alvarez

The day started with a Palette Breakfast at the Ritz Carlton Coconut Grove, an exclusive breakfast/reception where participants got a sneak peek at this year’s festival offerings, ideal for collectors who want first dibs on artwork. Artwork sold at the event benefitted University of Miami’s Project: New Born, an organization committed to raising much-needed funds to support the Project: New Born Intensive Care Unit, an intensive care facility to imperiled premature and high risk infants.

After the breakfast, I headed to stop by Coconut Grove Gallery and Interiors first as in every year, the gallery provides free parking and shuttle rides to the festival. Artists were on hand creating their artwork and guests were treated to some goodies as they strolled and admire other artwork throughout the premises.

Then after a short shuttle to the festival, the cornucopia of art began in my journey. The fair showcased the works of over 360 artists and craftsmen from across the world, plus offers activities like the Culinary Pavilion Showcase, a series of culinary demonstrations throughout the festival; a Kid’s Zone for the little ones and live musical entertainment.

There was a line up of live entertainment including local jam band Suenalo and Latin Grammy Award-winning flutist Nestor Torres. Also, the Global Food Village served a wide variety of culinary delights for hungry art lovers in need of nourishment. At the end of the culinary Pavilion in the Barefoot Wine Tent, Barefoot Winemaker Jennifer Wall treated guests to a Wine & Bubbly blending and cocktail seminar while guests sampled the many varieties of Barefoot Wines from its traditional Chardonnay to the Pink Moscato Spumante.

All in the all, it was an afternoon filled with art. Get ready for next year as the Coconut Grove Arts Festival turns 50 and it is for sure that the celebration will be done at an all time high! See you in 2013!
