Locust Projects presents Drew Heitzler The World Is Yours Reception 4/10/10

Drew Heitzler
THE WORLD IS YOURS
Reception: Saturday, April 10, 7-10pm
Through April 30

Frederick J. Frenger, Jr., a blithe psychopath from California, asked the flight attendant in first class for another glass of champagne and some writing materials. She brought him a cold half-bottle, uncorked it and left it with him, and returned a few moments later with some Pan Am writing paper and a white ball point pen. For the next hour, as he sipped champagne, Freddy practiced writing the signatures of Claude L. Bytell, Ramon Mendez, and Herman T. Gotlieb.

The best way to forge a signature, he knew, was to turn it upside down and draw it instead of trying to imitate the handwriting. That was the foolproof way, if a man had the time and the privacy and was forging a document or a check. Still, close enough was usually good enough for Freddy. He was not a careful person, and a full hour was a long time for him to engage in any activity without his mind turning to something else. Comfortably full, and a trifle dizzy from the wine, Freddy stretched out in the wide reclining seat, hugging the tiny airline pillow. He slept soundly until the attendant awakened him gently and asked him to fasten his seat belt for the descent into Miami International Airport.

Locust Projects is pleased to announce a solo exhibition by Los Angeles-based artist and filmmaker Drew Heitzler. Heitzler’s new installation focuses on a two-channel video projection that explores the 1932 film Scarface.

Before Brian DePalma’s Miami-based remake was released in 1983, an original version of Scarface, directed by Howard Hawkes and produced by Howard Hughes, was produced in Los Angeles. For this exhibition, Heitzler edits Hawkes’ film to exclude dialog and create an abstract narrative that shifts the focus from drug and street crime to white-collar crime and government complicity.

The installation will also include appropriated photographs from the book Howard Hughes, His Life and Madness that explore how the Howard Hughes Medical Center, originally headquartered in Miami, was a tax dodge for Hughes made possible by a collaboration with Richard Nixon’s brother. The windows of Locust Projects will be lined with images from the cover of a 1974 issue of Playgirl magazine, which included an article about Howard Hughes and Richard Nixon.

Together, these works lend to the Heitzler’s practice of reconsidering histories as he assembles a series of seemingly unrelated sources to re-tell a story that was never explicitly told.

Drew Heitzler (b. 1972 in Charleston, South Carolina) lives and works in Los Angeles, California. Heitzler received his MFA from Hunter College in 2000. His film based projects have been exhibited internationally at galleries and institutions including Renwick Gallery, The Project, Orchard, The Swiss Institute, Sculpture Center, Anthology Film Archives, and PS1 Contemporary Art Center in New York; Blum & Poe, Redling Fine Art, China Art Objects, TRUDI, and LA>

This exhibition is made possible with the support from: Andy Warhol Foundation; Galt & Skye Mikesell; Hannibal Cox Jr. Foundation; Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the Cultural Affairs Council, the Mayor, and the Miami-Dade County Boardof County Commissioners. Special thanks to: Blum & Poe, Los Angeles and Renwick Gallery, New York. Design: Venture Architects.

Meet French artist Alain Godon and view his vibrantly colored BildoReliefos – ultra-high definition single edition prints.
BildoReliefo is an exclusive technique created by Godon that combines the classic form of oil on canvas with 21st century digital technology. To create these dramatic pieces the artist revisits his original paintings, and digitally adjusts the colors, shadows and light, forming the impression of an image in relief. Then a high-resolution single print is made of this new, original work of art. Finally, the printed art is adhered to an aluminum surface before being hand-signed by the painter.
“I look forward to introducing this unique and talented artist to the South Florida community,” said Bernard Markowicz, President of godonAmerica. “The art world in Europe already has embraced his work, and I believe that Godon’s colorful paintings which are pop art expressions of life, will be well received in America.”
In his paintings Alain Godon portrays the essence of a city – its people, culture, monuments, and architecture – and then uses his playful imagination to infuse his work with expressive lines and rich vivid colors. His signature style has been known to subtly include humorous caricatures of his wife, his dogs and himself into most of his pieces.
Godon has painted the sites and captured the spirit of Paris, New York City, Amsterdam and Le Touquet, a beach resort town in the North of France, and soon adds Miami to his prestigious list.
ABOUT GODONAMERICA
Bernard Markowicz, former Director and partner with the prestigious international group Opera Gallery, founded godonAmerica in November 2009. Several years ago, while traveling with his son to the elegant beach resort of Le Touquet to share his family’s history, Markowicz discovered the brilliantly colored and captivating paintings by Alain Godon. As an avid art collector Markowicz recognized the success that Godon was receiving in Europe, and decided to bring his work to the States. Now, as CEO of godonAmerica, Bernard Markowicz is the exclusive publisher of Alain Godon’s limited edition series for the Americas.

It’s Happening at CANDO Arts Co-op 4/11/10

It’s HAPPENING
April 11th from 4:30 – 6:30 pm
A FREE dance presentation inspired by the space and work of the
CANDO Arts Co-op
309 23rd Street
Miami Beach, FL
One block west of Collins Ave.
It’s Happening… is a collage of experiences and interpretations, reflecting on the work of Miami artists: Deborah Weed, Dena & Stewart Stewart, Lucinda Linderman, Paula Turk, AnneFaye Poole, and James Broderick. 7 young international and local choreographers, all students and alumni of the New World School of the Arts dance program, come together to create a physical second look at art. They explore the textures, perceptions of, and reactions to the ideas and images presented at the CANDO Arts Co-op. It is never enough to look at a picture or space without putting some thought into how it makes you react. Within each illustration or sculpture there is an energy, a history, and a reason. Whether we choose to acknowledge it or not, there is a lot more happening right before our eyes than we realize. And this is what we search for and try to translate for ourselves, that which is happening when we look at the world through the eyes and hands of another human being. In this intimate setting, the audience will experience the world created by the gallery’s work alongside the performers themselves. Both performer and patron will be challenged to react and adapt to what has been and is being created. Visual art, dance, literature, and music will all lend a hand in creating this experience, stimulating questions and conversations that will hopefully prompt new perspectives on how art can affect the response of individuals and communities.

Choreographers:
Andrea Ollarvide, Kristen Carcone, Liony Garcia, Sarah Matry-Guerre, Kristin Whiting, Kaitlyn Bishop, and Matthew Bailey

Special thanks to The Dade Community Foundation, Collins Park Neighborhood Association, MiamiArtZine .com, as well as Miami Dance Futures without whom this performance would not be possible. For more information call 786-366-9826.

Knight Foundation awards millions of dollars to Teach for America to increase the number of Miami-Dade Public School teachers

Teach For America To More Than Triple Number of Its Local Teachers With the Help of a $6 million Knight Foundation Grant
Teach For America, which helps raise educational standards in Miami-Dade’s highest-need neighborhoods, will more than triple its number of local teachers, thanks in part to a $6 million grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. By 2014, some 350 Teach For America educators will reach more than 25,000 local students, the national nonprofit announced today.
“Miami-Dade children are our future economic, cultural and civic leaders. We owe it to them – and this entire community – to provide them with the knowledge and skills to improve our collective future,” said Dennis Scholl, Knight Foundation’s Miami program director. “Teach For America, with its proven track record of raising educational achievement, is the right fit for Miami-Dade.”
“Teach For America has seen that, when students are held to high expectations, their growth is exponential,” Rebecca Fishman Lipsey, executive director of Teach For America Miami-Dade, said. “Every child can achieve, and with Knight Foundation’s support, and ongoing fundraising, we are going to make that a reality.”
Teach For America’s teachers and alumni work to eliminate educational inequity in low-income communities nationwide. Through the program, top college graduates and professionals commit to teach for two years in urban and rural public schools, and become lifelong leaders in the effort to end educational inequity.
Since expanding to Miami-Dade in 2003, the program has produced tangible results. For example, the typical Miami-Dade student in a Teach For America teacher’s classroom advances 1.5 reading grade levels over just one academic year. Those same students have also improved their FCAT scores.
At Central Senior High, Teach For America’s Kimberly Williams has quadrupled the number of her students passing the FCAT “retake.” As a result of her leadership, her students who previously failed the FCAT are on a different life path.
Due to the organization’s impressive impact, the Florida Department of Education has said Teach For America is a top way to raise achievement for students living in poverty.
“Miami-Dade is home to some of the best teachers in the nation and under the leadership of Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, they have achieved great academic success with their students,” said Education Commissioner Dr. Eric J. Smith. “The expansion of Teach For America through this generous grant from Knight Foundation is going to push that progress even further. I anticipate positive results as these proven educators bring their expertise to the area’s struggling schools.”
“We are thrilled with our growing partnership with Teach For America and we see our working together as critical to raising achievement in our most fragile schools,” said Alberto Carvalho, Superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
Knight Foundation’s grant will help Teach For America jumpstart more local fundraising to fuel its expansion and defray the costs of recruiting, training and supporting each new teacher. For more information about supporting Teach For America in Miami-Dade, contact 786-245-8407.
About Teach For America

We’ve been away from home long enough– and to celebrate our return to the United States, we’re going to try and see as much of it as we can, as quickly as we can!
We’ll be touring the U.S. for the entire month of June, from New York to California and (almost) everywhere in between. And even better, our pals in Tokyo Police Club will be on board for most dates.

Redemption. Paranoia. Guilt. And brief glimpses of a better tomorrow, all cloaked in pop hooks that truly help the medicine go down.

What is this? Another lost LP from Brian Wilson’s sandbox phase? If only things were that simple. What we’re really alluding to here is Passion Pit’s first proper full-length, Manners, a bird-flipping break from the blogosphere by a 21 year old with much more on his manic mind than girls, girls, girls. You know, important matters, like the end of the world and learning to love someone other than the man in the mirror.

That’s the thing people missed about Passion Pit’s debut EP, Chunk of Change. While it was originally meant as a Valentine’s Day gift for a girlfriend who “put up with” frontman Michael Angelakos, that detail’s only half of a story that isn’t so cuddly when you consider the circumstances.

Let’s Talk Shop About Blogs 4/16/10

Ted Rubin of Open Sky will be in town and wants to meet bloggers. Ted is the ex-CMO of e.l.f. Cosmetics / EyesLipsFace.com, where he built a vast network of bloggers and worked with a very large Facebook and Twitter following.

I saw a presentation about Open Sky and think a good number of bloggers in Miami might be interested in this, especially family, food & lifestyle bloggers who’ve got a solid presence.

No formal preso here … let’s just get together and talk shop about our blogs and monetizing strategies … if you’re into that. First cupla drinks on Ted’s tab!

Note: I am not at all affiliated with Open Sky — I just wanted to share a potentially good resource with fellow bloggers and besides, it’s been a while since we all got together and networked.

Gustavo Matamoros and Adalberto Delgado at The Reading Room 4/9/10

The Reading Room
A Temporary Space for Artists’ Books, Publications and Multiples
Friday, April 9, Noon – 2 p.m.
Main Library Children’s Room, 101 W. Flagler Street, Miami
With special guests:
Adalberto Delgado, filmmaker, artist
Gustavo Matamoros, experimental composer, sound artist, artistic director of isaw / Subtropics

The Reading Room, March 2010
Left to itself art would have to be something very simple – it would be sufficient for it to be beautiful. But when it’s useful it should spill out of just being beautiful and move over to other aspects of life so that when we’re not with the art it has nevertheless influenced our actions or our responses. – John Cage, from “The Aesthetics of John Cage: A Composite Interview,” 1987
John Cage made you realize that there wasn’t a thing called noise, it was just music you hadn’t appreciated. – Brian Eno
Safeness lurks wherever we turn… Show me dangerous music. – Lukas Foss
(all quotes from www.subtropics.org)
On the second Friday of each month, a secret room in the Children’s Room at the Main Library becomes The Reading Room. In this cozy space, visitors can stop by any time between 12 and 2pm to get up close and personal with selections from the Library’s collection of artists’ books, publications and multiples. Experience these objects without having to look at them through a display case, engage in conversation over coffee and cookies, and see living-room style screenings of video and new media art (usually).
This installment of The Reading Room promises both discussion and activity. We’ll talk about a new project up right now at Sunny Isles Branch Library: In Parentheses – A Collaborative Site-Specific Installation by Adalberto Delgado and Maria I. Amores. In Parentheses uses video, sculpture and sound to explore the relationship between the interpretation of symbols and their meaning in language. And Gustavo Matamoros of will temporarily turn the space into an immersive environment in which to demonstrate the interdisciplinary nature of sound.

Annette Recommends Jamie Cullum The Pursuit

Jamie Cullum just released  his new CD The Pursuit.  This is an awesome CD, great jazz music, one of my favorites is the first track “Just One of Those Things” , I love the big band sound of this one.  I really enjoyed every track, each one has a different style and sound.   This was my first introduction to Jamie Cullum and I look forward to hearing his other CD’s.

JAMIE CULLUM LAUNCHES “ONE MAN BRITISH INVASION” OF AMERICA
GOLDEN GLOBE & GRAMMY NOMINEE ANNOUCES MARCH TOUR DATES AND RELEASE OF NEW ALBUM THE PURSUIT ON MARCH 2, 2010

English singer/songwriter/pianist/multi-instrumentalist Jamie Cullum, who has been dubbed “a one man British invasion” (Hollywood Reporter), has announced a series of US tour dates to coincide with the U.S. release of The Pursuit on March 2, 2010. The album is Cullum’s third for Verve Records and his first in four years. It follows last year’s Golden Globe nomination for Cullum and Clint Eastwood of “Gran Torino” as Best Original Song. Cullum’s prior album releases Twentysomething and Catching Tales were international crossover smashes selling more than 4 million combined copies worldwide. Already released to great critical and commercial success in Europe and the U.K., The Pursuit has garnered Top 10 digital debuts on the ITunes Top Album Chart in the U.K., Germany, France, Spain and ten other countries. The album is currently #14 on the Billboard European Top 100 Album Chart.

Like the exploding piano on its cover, the long-awaited new album The Pursuit blows away audience preconceptions with 14 smoldering tracks that seamlessly run the gamut from swinging standards and yearning singer-songwriter confessionals to 125 BPM house dance tracks and resurrected Broadway ballads. The album features nine Cullum originals and five cover songs that showcase Cullum’s unique voice and iconoclastic interpretive skills. The self-penned gems include the buoyant first single “I’m All Over It,” the cheerfully apocalyptic “Wheels,” the animated swing of “You and Me Are Gone,” Cullum’s love song to music “Mixtape” and his love song to love “Love Ain’t Gonna Let You Down.”

I’m All Over It video

Elsewhere on the album, Cullum reinvents 1930s jazz standards (Cole Porter’s “Just One Of Those Things” and “Love For Sale”), brings the dance floor into the bedroom (Rihanna’s “Don’t Stop The Music”) and cleans the pancake off the Great White Way (Leslie Bricusse’s “If I Ruled the World” and Stephen Sondheim’s “Not While I’m Around”).

Don’t Stop The Music video

Since the release of Cullum’s last album, he has seen an ever-growing courtship with Hollywood blossom: beginning with 2007’s animated Disney feature Meet The Robinsons in which Jamie was the singing voice of Frankie The Frog, continuing with his vocal on the Golden Globe-nominated “Best Original Song” from the John Cusack film Grace Is Gone, and culminating in his co-writing and performing with Clint Eastwood the Golden Globe-nominated “Best Original Song” from 2008’s Gran Torino. Cullum was also recently featured in the Clint Eastwood executive-produced documentary Johnny Mercer: The Dream’s On Me celebrating the 100th anniversary of the great American songwriter’s birth.

We’ll get comfortable and watch the Y Yoga Movie, a documentary that examines the influence of yoga in modern times.

Filmmaker Arthur Klein turned to yoga for relief in New York City, in an effort to regain inner peace and balance in the aftermath of 9/11. A year after he began a disciplined daily practice, two of his teachers asked him to create a film to document trends that were unfolding within the yoga community. For six years Klein explored the Western yogic experience, and captured its essence through a collection of distinctly American stories. In this movie, he examines why people do yoga and how it changes them.

Miami City Ballet Presents Program IV at Adrienne Arsht Center 4/9-11/10

Choreography by Robbins
Music by Chopin
Dances at a Gathering premiered in 1969 with New York City Ballet. It is a work for ten dancers set to piano pieces by Chopin. Robbins began choreographing the ballet as a pas de deux for Edward Villella and Patricia McBride but was so inspired by the music that he continued to expand the piece. He ended with eighteen pieces in all and with five female dancers and five male dancers set apart by the colors of their costumes. Although the ballet has no specific plot, the tone of the piece is uplifting and is tinged with Slavic feeling reminiscent of mazurkas and waltzes.

Egyptian Gallery Opening at Bass Museum of Art 4/29/10

A Night at the Museum
Thursday, April 29th – 8:30-10:30PM
Bass Museum of Art – 2121 Park Avenue, Miami Beach

Visitors to the Bass Museum of Art will soon be able to experience the ancient world. On Thursday, April 29, the museum will inaugurate the only Egyptian Gallery and mummy in Florida at their members-only premiere event, A Night at the Museum. The evening features informal curator-led tours by Bass Museum’s Executive Director Silvia Cubiña and Brooklyn Museum’s Egyptologist and special exhibition curator, Dr. Edward Bleiberg. Membership costs $125 and admits two to this private opening event.

Guests will enjoy cocktails by GREY GOOSE vodka and Bervini Prosecco with special desserts from Stella’s Sweet Shoppe. There will be raffle prizes, including an Ikepod: Marc Newson Solaris and Art Basel Miami Beach VIP Package.

The gallery offers an opportunity to learn about one of the world’s oldest and most mysterious civilizations from its surviving objects, and will showcase sarcophagi, mummy and 13 objects of Egyptian antiquity on long-term loan from the Brooklyn Museum, Lowe Art Museum and individuals’ private collections.

The nearest Egyptian gallery is located 667 miles from Miami Beach at Michael C. Carlos Museum in Atlanta. Bass Museum’s Egyptian Gallery opens to the public April 30.

THE ONLY EGYPTIAN GALLERY IN FLORIDA TO OPEN IN APRIL
Featuring an Egyptian sarcophagus and mummy

Visitors to the Bass Museum of Art will soon be able to experience the ancient world. On April 29, the museum will inaugurate the only Egyptian Gallery in Florida. The gallery offers a unique opportunity to learn about one of the world’s oldest and most mysterious civilizations from its surviving objects, including an Egyptian sarcophagus and mummy.

This project was conceived when the Bass Museum’s Executive Director and Chief Curator, Silvia Karman Cubiñá, identified a Polychrome Wood Inner Sarcophagus and Mummy from 25th or 26th Dynasty (808 – 518 B.C.) in the museum’s collection. “With the opening of the Egyptian Gallery, the Bass Museum will appeal to a wide audience of art, culture, archeology and history lovers; children and adults alike. It will serve as the place in Miami to experience a long history of object-making and what these objects say about humankind from 700 B.C. through the present,” said Karman Cubiñá.

During the opening celebration in April and throughout the first year the gallery is open, the museum will mount an ambitious series of public programs to advance understanding of the customs and objects of Ancient Egypt. Special educational outreach efforts include IDEA@thebass Family Days and lectures by visiting curators.

The museum recruited Dr. Edward Bleiberg, Curator of Egyptian, Classical and Ancient Middle Eastern Art at the Brooklyn Museum, as Consulting Curator of the project to research and interpret the vast hieroglyphic paintings on the surface of the Sarcophagus. Dr. Bleiberg began his study in July 2009 by translating the hieroglyphic drawings on the inner sarcophagus to obtain more information about the mummy. Like most of the surviving Egyptian mummies, the Bass mummy is destined to remain shrouded in mystery. But it is this very type of ancient mystery that continues to intrigue Egyptian art enthusiasts throughout the world.

The Egyptian Gallery will be permanently housed in a 460 sq. ft. first floor gallery centrally located and close to the museum’s entrance. The gallery will showcase the sarcophagi, mummy and thirteen objects of Egyptian antiquity on long-term loan from the Brooklyn Museum, Lowe Art Museum and Private Collections. These objects are roughly from the same period as the Bass sarcophagi and provide a representative sampling of what would typically have been placed inside the tomb to assist the dead in transitioning to the afterlife.

MORE INFORMATION:
Membership required for Night at the Museum opening preview event on April 29th, gallery opens to the public April 30th.

Miami Beach neighbor, Mr. Dan P.S. Paul, who sadly passed away this past February, left a generous gift to the Bass Museum of an Egyptian coffin and mummy and two Apulian vases. A renowned lawyer and specialist in First Amendment issues, Mr. Paul was a major crafter of the Dade County Charter in 1957 and was civically involved in many community issues. Mr. Paul will be memorialized in the new Egyptian Gallery and in future installation of the permanent collection. His legacy and spirit of generosity will continue to spread as school children and the general public enjoys these valuable objects.

Fun fact for anyone hoping to visit an Egyptian gallery: The next closest Egyptian gallery/sarcophagus is located at Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. This is 667 miles from Bass Museum of Art (Driving time: 10 hours 31 minutes).

”Malice in Wonderland”
“If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is because everything would be what it isn’t. And contrary-wise, what it is it wouldn’t be, and what it wouldn’t be, it would. You see?”
Welcome to Malice in Wonderland!
This show will take you on a marvelous adventure into the unknown. Ray Azcuy, Lu Coxhead, Luis Diaz and Yamel Molerio will surprise you with an array of artworks exploring familiar settings with a twist of malice. The artworks will explore the tragic and inevitable loss of childhood innocence, life as a meaningless puzzle, and death as a constant and underlying menace. All of the pieces have a dream like quality while dealing with diverse personal issues. The curious viewers may find themselves looking at confusing subject matter that they could simply regard as nonsense or approach the work and explore at a deeper level to discover the meaning beneath the layers of paint.
Follow us, down the rabbit’s hole and join us for our opening.

Calix Gustav Gallery Debuts New Exhibit Sticky and Sweet 4/10/10

CALIX GUSTAV GALLERY DEBUTS NEW EXHIBIT “STICKY & SWEET”
Cutting-edge gallery once again pushes the envelope with sexually charged show

WHAT/WHO: Calix Gustav Gallery will debut its newest exhibit “Sticky & Sweet” on Saturday, April 10, 2010 from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. coinciding with Wynwood’s monthly art walk. The unveiling of the exhibit, which explicitly explores sexual freedom, expression and all related taboos – a-la-Madonna – will be celebrated with an opening reception featuring beats by DJ Johnny the Boy and complimentary cocktails.

In a society where sexual liberation often has a tongue-in-cheek political innuendo, “Sticky & Sweet” examines sexuality as a means for personal identity through both self-expression and social labeling. Featured artists Eurydice, Carl Pascuzzi, Diane Arrieta, Jonathan Stein, Alexis Rodriguez-Duarte and Spunk and The Orange Kittens use their craft to shed light on sexuality as it relates to human nature – key elements being ambiguity, eroticism as well as overt and graphic references.

“Sticky & Sweet” will run from April 10, 2010 through May 29, 2010. Regular gallery visiting hours are from Tuesday to Saturday from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Anthony Jordon Exhibition/Silent Auction in Support of Miami Beach AIDS Walk 4/10/10

Saturday April 10, 2010 will be one of many nights in support of a great cause, specific not only to South Florida, but the world. From 6-9pm, there will be a photography exhibition held at MINIbar, a new restaurant in the Design District located at 3612 NE 2nd Avenue. The photographs on display will be donated works from local photographer, Anthony Jordon (photographer for Miami New Times, Miami Magazine, and www.miamiartzine.com).

The photo exhibition is titled “Living & Loving: Celebrating our Comfort”. It’s a tribute to all of people enjoying everyday living, a positive motivation to all people infected/affected by HIV/AIDS. The works will feature various couples representative of all cultures and lifestyles, which make Miami the diverse city that it is. The photos will be auctioned to generate funds in support of HIV/AIDS program funding via donation to the Repeat Offenders, one of the many teams participating in Miami Beach AIDS Walk 2010. The bidding will begin at 630pm but in the silent auction fashion, where all works will be on display from bidding start time until 830pm. At that time, bidding ends, and the highest bidders can then collect their new prized photo. It’s as simple as stopping by, viewing the works (and the crowd for your competition) and hoping for the best when the bidding ends.

While at MINIbar don’t forget to sample some of the eats, treats, and wines available (www.minibarmiami.com).

There is no cover for the event, ample parking around the area and a great environment to bring any and everyone out to enjoy a night of photography and goodwill.

Unity On The Bay presents Ma Jaya Sati Bhagavati in celebration of National Volunteer Month 5/1/10

INTERNATIONALLY-KNOWN SPIRITUAL LEADER MA JAYA TRAVELS TO MIAMI IN CELEBRATION OF NATIONAL VOLUNTEER MONTH

Miami, Florida (March 29, 2010) – In honor of National Volunteer Month in April, UNITY ON THE BAY, is proud to present Ma Jaya Sati Bhagavati, the internationally-renowned Gandhi Foundation USA winner of the Humanitarian Service Award in the names of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King.

Ma Jaya, is a distinguished spiritual leader, Yoga master, acclaimed artist and founder of Kashi Ashram a non-for profit spiritual community located in Sebastian, Florida, New York, Atlanta and Los Angeles. Ma Jaya will speak at Unity on the topic of “Service: the Dance of Unconditional Love – A Journey to Inner Peace and Fulfillment.” Ma Jaya is passionate about the importance of service, and is widely known for her compassionate work, serving those who are suffering, people living with AIDS, the homeless, the poor, and anyone in need.

The event will take place on Saturday, May 1, at 7pm at Unity on the Bay which is located at 411 NE 21st Street, Miami, Florida. The event is open to the public and is $25 in advance, $30 at the door. Access passes for a private audience with Ma Jaya are also available for $108 and includes light vegetarian fare.

Unity on the Bay is proud to celebrate National Volunteer Month, by presenting this celebrated speaker and emphasizing the importance of service. As Ma says, “Service to others is the fastest way to inner peace and fulfillment. Service cleanses the heart. You who serve others are blessed by the service you do. Be one of those who are constantly aware of the feelings of others; this is the very purpose of service. Do service that will promote peace and harmony in the world.”

Ma teaches from a profound inner realization, bringing a wonderful sense of humor to the moment. Through colorful stories and a guided meditation, Ma will encourage us to see through all appearances into the depths of the heart, where our divine self dwells. It is from that place of kindness and awareness that we experience the joy of service. “We are honored to host Ma Jaya in Miami,” says Chris Jackson, Senior Minister. “Her philosophy and her very presence reflect a key aspect of our Unity teaching – service.”
Ma Jaya has been honored with numerous awards, including induction into the Morehouse College Martin Luther King, Jr., Board of Preachers in Atlanta in 2002. She is also the recipient of the Jefferson Award Certificate of Excellence, the AIDS Service Award from the United Foundation for AIDS, and The Extraordinary Voices Award from Mothers’ Voices. The Sikh Dharma named Ma the 1994 Woman of Peace; in January of 2006, the Ma Yogi Shakti Mission honored Ma with the Hindu title of Mata Maha Mandleshwar of the Naranjani Akara. In October of 2007, the, Jr. Ma Jaya serves as an Advisory Trustee of the Parliament of the World’s Religions and as a member of the United Religions Initiative.

Artist collaborations include Gucci Mane, Gorilla Zoe, Rick Ross, Lloyd, Bow-Wow just to name a few
Miami Based chart-topping, super producing, Grammy Nominated duo Marcello “Cool” Valenzano and Andre “Dre” Lyon also know as Cool & Dre and their Epidemic Music imprint are gearing up for the release of C-Ride’s sophomore album “The Arab Store” which is being released virally for FREE today via www.c2daride.com.
The title of the album is a nod to all the convenience stores that can be found on almost every corner in Miami. Says C-Ride, “Down here in Miami, whatever you need is in the Arab store-a toothbrush, cereal, a tire. My album is just that. If you need it now, whatever you need, whatever you want, whenever you need it, it’s gonna be right there.” The first single is the Cool & Dre banger “What’s Hood” featuring Gorilla Zoe. Cool and Dre along with Real Big Management and Stacks Entertainment are executive producers on this album.
In regards to releasing the album for free C-Ride says, “I grew tired of waiting for the album to be released through my major label. I couldn’t let such amazing music just sit on a shelf and my fans were growing impatient as well. The Music Industry is changing and artists are releasing their music via the internet to give their fans what they want and that’s what I decided to do. I rather have hundreds of thousands of downloads and have people listen to my music than none at all.”

Carlos Cruz-Diez Lights up Miami with Exhibition of Interactive Chromatic Installations

Artist Recently Chosen to Create Signature Artwork for New Marlins Stadium Introduces his Groundbreaking Work to South Floridians
Carlos Cruz-Diez: The Embodied Experience of Color
March 19 – June 20, 2010
On view at Miami Art Museum from March 19 through June 20, 2010, the exhibition invites visitors to become participants in the artwork, experiencing color through their interactions with four light installations, including the groundbreaking Cromosaturación (Chromosaturation), 1968. Carlos Cruz-Diez recently made headlines when he was selected to create a major artwork feature for the new Miami Marlins Stadium.

Carlos Cruz-Diez: The Embodied Experience of Color explores the artist’s pioneering contribution to experimental practices with color and perceptual structures in the 1960s and 1970s that proposed new definitions for the art work as a field of participation. For more information, visit miamiartmuseum.org or call 305.375.1705.

The exhibition will feature Cromosaturación (Chromosaturation), a site-specific environment designed by the artist that focuses on the relationship between color and perception. Initially conceived in 1965 and presented for the first time in 1968 in the Ostwald Museum in Dortmund, Germany, this work consists of three separate color chambers infused with red, green and blue light. The real content of this work is the visitor’s experience of walking through the shifting chromatic space and interacting over time through his physical movement.

Tigertail presents dance from Barcelona 4/9-10/10

Gripping, physically intense and genuinely lyrical, this award-winning extended evening-length duet Ölelés for two men marks the first collaboration between acclaimed Catalán choreographers and performers Jordi Cortés and Damián Muñoz – two of Spain’s most innovative young dance artists. Based on writer Sándor Márai’s 1942 masterpiece Embers, this high-velocity, nearly violent piece dramatizes the bitter reunion of two long-estranged friends, who look back to the fateful betrayal that shattered their bond 40 years earlier. Ölelés has received the Ciudad de Barcelona Award and the Premio de la Feria Internacional de Huesca.

Cortés has performed with DV8 Physical Theatre in London, among others and Muñoz, who formed his own company in 1995 and is dubbed the Almodóvar of dance in Spain. This simmering physical theatre work is guaranteed to draw the audience through an intense and furious male bonding.

Educate Tomorrow, Corp. is an international, nonprofit, certified 501(c)(3) organization. All over the world, poverty denies children, as well as adults, the promises of a better tomorrow. Forgotten by society and social welfare programs, children born into poverty are trapped in a cruel and often violent cycle that frequently continues for generations. Lacking the inspiration, confidence, knowledge, and means to change, entire families are lost to the cycle of hopelessness.

Educate Tomorrow believes that the best way to end the cycle of poverty is through education. Our mission is to make education an attainable goal for the most disadvantaged in our world, so that all may be afforded the possibilities that can be achieved through learning. We strive to reach out to these individuals and provide them inspiration, guidance, and support and lead them on the path of life-long learning.

Educate Tomorrow’s primary mission in the US is to provide one-on-one educational mentors to foster care children that are turning 18 and “aging out” of the system. Since its founding in 2003, Educate Tomorrow has successfully implemented its mentoring programs, education programs and life skills camps across the nation. Additionally, it has reached internationally by continuing to support the work of its founders who established one of the first local language primary schools, adult literacy programs and boarding schools in the remote and impoverished village of Kabey Fo in Niger, West Africa.

Spinello Gallery’s Farley Aguilar Ulf at Art & Culture Center Of Hollywood 3/26/10

Farley Aguilar | Coronation [2010] | Oil on Linen | 60″ x 48″

ART & CULTURE CENTER OF HOLLYWOOD: 1650 Harrison St., Hollywood, FL – 33020
SOLO DEBUT: Farley Aguilar | “Ulf”
OPENING RECEPTION: Friday, March 26th, 6-9pm

Spinello Gallery is proud to announce a new addition to the Spinello family, Farley Aguilar. Aguilar’s debut solo exhibition, “Ulf,” features a suite of paintings hosted by the Art & Culture Center of Hollywood (1650 Harrison St., Hollywood, FL – 33020) on Friday, March 26th, 6-9pm.

Farley Aguilar paintings are based on a character Aguilar conjured up and refers to as “Ulf.” “Ulf” is an old Norse term for wolf and it’s also a common male name in Scandinavia and Germany. The series tracks the rise and fall of this creature/character, from his supernatural origins (The witches casting a spell to the full moon) to his destruction by his own followers.

The artist in these works, explores people’s need to create fantasy in order to deal with the fact that they are simply pawns of fate. The nature of life and death are truly mysteries that are not understood. The symbol of the wolf is significant because they are thought of as loners – many ancient culture’s myths are based on insights gleaned from the wolf’s wandering nature. Another notable source of inspiration for Aguilar are artists like Ingmar Bergman and Dostoevsky, who blend reality with dreams, magic, and horror in order to explore what is beneath our standard social reality.

Opening Reception: Friday, March 26th, 2010 / Exhibition through April 25th, 2010.

Spinello Gallery prides itself in exhibiting intelligent works of art in every medium by contemporary local Miami emerging artists. Spinello Gallery has become the playground for unorthodox and experimental artists who don’t easily fit into the confines of the traditional gallery space. Spinello Gallery is steadily making headway in the Miami Art Scene and beyond becoming a contender in the Art World.

The Rhythm Foundation kicks off its 8th annual Heineken TransAtlantic Festival this April with a two part series headlined by Colombia’s psychedelic cumbia band Bomba Estéreo and Mali’s world music sensation Vieux Farka Touré. In addition, Grammy-nominated Orquestra Contemporanea de Olinda of Brazil and Miami’s own two-time Grammy-nominated Locos Por Juana will join the festivities which have garnered much local and international attention for their eclectic music pairings.

The 8th annual Heineken TransAtlantic Festival is the sound of the world “right now” – the series of concerts and parties featuring modern world music proudly features innovative artists working in the beautiful collision between traditional rhythms and electronica/DJ culture. The series pays tribute to Miami as a true modern “TransAtlantic” capital, a crossroads of the Americas and Europe. It’s the hotbed of a young, club-crazy art scene, playground of the East, perched provocatively on the Atlantic Rim, where centuries of commerce and migration have formed a crossroads that unites Africa, Western Europe, the Caribbean, and the Americas.

The Rhythm Foundation, leading presenter of world music in South Florida, created the series in 2003 knowing that in Miami, there is a large audience of internationally-minded people who want to hear what is happening right now in our world. With this festival, The Rhythm Foundation showcases the city’s position as the hip center of a whole new generation of global music.

Friday, April 9th – 7PM

About Bomba Estéreo
Bomba Estéreo formed in the rich underground electronic scene of Bogota, Colombia in 2005. Guitarist Simon Mejia recruited fierce singer Liliana Saumet to join the group, and Bomba Estéreo expanded its “psychedelic cumbia” sound and captivating live show. The group plays an explosive dance-fusion of electronic dub and hip-hop, in a similar vein as M.I.A. and Santigold, mixed with classic Colombian rhythms like cumbia and champeta. The group made their US debut at SXSW in 2009 and garnered huge attention at LAMC in New York last summer. Myspace.com/BombaEstereo

About Vieux Farka Touré
The son of the revered Malian guitarist Ali Farka Touré, Vieux has stepped out from his late father’s massive shadow. Ali Farka Touré proved, in case anyone ever doubted it, that the soul of the blues could be found in West Africa. Vieux is turning heads with a more radical idea: that those western Saharan roots can be heard in everything from the jam band scene to Jamaican dub. The young Six Degrees Record artist and his band have caused a sensation at music festivals across the globe in recent years. He makes his Florida debut with this concert. VieuxFarkaToure.com

About Orquestra Contemporânea de Olinda
OCO brings together some of the best young musicians of Pernambuco, birthplace of classic Northeast Brazilian rhythms forro and frevo. The late legendary musical genius Chico Science left behind a supercharged music scene that fuses the rhythms of Pernambuco with drum & bass, rock and world grooves. In this music-crazed city filled with amazing horn players and percussionists comes Orquestra Contemporanea de Olinda, who has built a concise identity and huge following since their 2008 debut. Distributred by Som Livre, Brazil’s largest label, their CD was nominated for a 2009 Latin Grammy and was hailed by the New York Times. Now they embark on their US debut tour, including New York City’s Lincoln Center and Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Myspace.com/OrquestraContemporaneaDeOlinda

About Locos Por Juana
The two-time Grammy-nominated Miami-based band received this write up in the LA Times: “Blending relaxed reggae grooves with biting social commentary, hip-hop raps with brassy solos, Locos Por Juana pulls listeners into a reverse Gulf Stream churning through the Straits of Florida south to Jamaica, Venezuela and Colombia, and over to Puerto Rico, Locos Por Juana shows with every song that it has thoroughly assimilated its multiple musical fathers, with a Caribbean lilt and a rock-steady beat.”

Naughty By Nature at Revolution Live 3/25/10

Naughty by Nature pulled off the neat trick of landing big, instantly catchy anthems on the pop charts while maintaining their street-level credibility among the hardcore rap faithful; one of the first groups to successfully perform such a balancing act. The group was formed in East Orange, NJ, in 1986, while all three members — MCs Treach (born Anthony Criss) and Vinnie (born Vincent Brown), and DJ Kay Gee (born Keir Gist) — were attending the same high school. Initially called New Style, they began performing at talent shows and were discovered by Queen Latifah a few years later; she signed the group to her management company and helped them land a deal with Tommy Boy Records. Naughty by Nature’s self-titled debut was released in 1991 and produced an inescapable Top Ten hit in “O.P.P.” (which supposedly stood for “other people’s property,” though a close listen to the lyrics revealed that the second P represented male or female genitals). “O.P.P.” made Naughty by Nature crossover stars, yet their ghetto sensibility and gritty street funk (not to mention Treach’s nimble rhyming technique) made them popular in the hip-hop underground as well. Treach began a secondary acting career in 1992, appearing in Juice; he would go on to supporting roles in The Meteor Man, Who’s the Man?, and Jason’s Lyric, among others.

Naughty by Nature repeated their success with the 1993 follow-up album, 19 Naughty III, which produced another ubiquitous crossover smash in the “hey! ho!” chant of “Hip Hop Hooray”; the album hit the Top Five and, like its predecessor, went platinum. 1995’s Poverty’s Paradise was the group’s final album for Tommy Boy; though it didn’t spawn any major hits, it went on to win a Grammy for Best Rap Album. A recording hiatus of several years followed; during that time, Treach pursued his acting career, most notably landing a recurring role on the HBO prison drama Oz; and Kay Gee greatly expanded his outside production work, helming records for Zhané, Aaliyah, Krayzie Bone, and Next, among others.

Michael Costello Art Exhibition at 101/exhibit opening reception 4/10/10

Contemporary painter Michael Costello paints childhood myths grown up. The Boston-based artist plays with perceptions of beauty, sexuality and maturity. Conventional standards of attraction are attacked and provoked in each brush stroke, while the complete image speaks of the marginalization of the individual in a society based on esthetic. Approximately twenty Costello paintings be part of his first Florida exhibition.

WHO/WHAT: The art of Michael Costello, a Boston-based contemporary realist painter, plays with perceptions of beauty, sexuality and maturity. Conventional standards of attraction are attacked and provoked in each brush stroke, while the complete image speaks of the marginalization of the individual in a society based on esthetic. His work has been described as “childhood myths grown up and, therefore, uncomfortable mirrors on our own memories and perceptions of our maturity.”

John Sutherland, a collector of Costello’s paintings and close friend of the artist, said: “I find his work a complete representation of the painter himself. Often finding as much of him as his subject matter in each work. This naturally is the hallmark of visual language at its best and what any student, collector, academic or passive patron could hope to find when pursuing another man’s experience regardless of medium or expression.”

During the past thirty years, Costello’s work has been exhibited extensively throughout New England and is included in numerous public and private collections including The Abrams Collection, The Federal Reserve, The Kemper Collection, and the Boston Public Library. In 2007, Costello was one of five artists chosen to be a Pollack Krasner Byrdcliffe Master. The Byrdcliffe Art Colony was founded by Ralph Radcliffe Whitehead to establish an environment in which artists could return to working while inspired by their natural surroundings. Michael began his artistic studies at Massachusetts College of Art and later received a graduate degree from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts.

WHEN: Opening reception with the artist: Saturday, April 10 , 2010, 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

William Carlson Aquila Non Capit Muscas An Eagle Does Not Catch Flies and Annual Juried Student Competition Exhibition Opening Reception 4/23/10

New Work by Renowned Studio Glass Artist & Prof. Bill Carlson
At the Lowe Art Museum
ANNUAL UM FACULTY AND STUDENT EXHIBITIONS

WHAT: William Carlson: Aquila Non Capit Muscas (An Eagle Does Not Catch Flies) and Annual Juried Student Competition Exhibition
WHEN: April 24-June 6, 2010
Opening Reception & Artist Lecture: Aquila Non Capit Muscas & juried student exhibition: Fri, April 23, 7-10 pm
WHERE: Lowe Art Museum, University of Miami Campus, 1301 Stanford Dr, Coral Gables
INFO: (305) 284-3535 or visit www.lowemuseum.org

The University of Miami Lowe Art Museum will greet spring with a faculty exhibition, featuring the internationally collected glass artist, Endowed Chair, and UM Art Department Professor William Carlson. The UM Faculty Exhibition, William Carlson: Aquila Non Capit Muscas (An Eagle Does Not Catch Flies) will be on view at the Lowe Art Museum from April 24 to June 6, 2010. On view through May 9, is the first of the yearly two-part student exhibitions, the Annual Juried Student Competition Exhibition.

One of the most important figures working in studio glass is Bill Carlson, who will have a one man show of his current work at the Lowe Art Museum on the UM campus, April 24-June 6, 2010.

Bill teaches glass at UM, is the former Chair of the Department of Art and Art History before becoming an Endowed Chair of the Arts at UM.

Example of Bill’s work can be seen when visiting the Palley Glass collection, one of the world’s best-known most comprehensive glass collections, as well as upon entering the Palley Pavilion, itself. Bill was commissioned by Myrna and Sheldon Palley to create a window.

The Palleys were also instrumental in developing the glass program at UM, and in bringing Carlson to Miami to head the Department.

Both the donation of the Palley Collection and Bill’s reputation as an artist and a teacher places UM in a unique position. The University has a specialty that doesn’t exist anywhere else in the SE.

One of the things that attracts Bill to glass is its potential for experimentation. “Glass art has an undetermined or open future. There’s not as much in the way of predictable expectation.”

A preview and reception for the juried student exhibition and Aquila Non Capit Muscas, will be held Friday, April 23 from 7-10 pm. The evening will be highlighted with a special lecture by William Carlson. A preview reception for the Annual Masters of Fine Arts Candidates Exhibition, on view from May 13 through June 6, is Thursday, May 12, 2010 from 7-9 pm. Both receptions are free and open to the public.

Considered among the most important figures in the studio glass movement, Carlson creates laminated sculptures that incorporate a variety of materials, ranging from glass of his own making to bits and bands of commercially produced safety glass and Vitrolite, to granite. His work addresses issues of interior space, geometry, texture, and color.

William Carlson, a recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship Award, his work is included in numerous museum collections around the world, including Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Cleveland Museum of Art, Corning Museum of Glass, Museum of Art & Design (formerly American Craft Museum) in New York, and the Hokkaido Museum of Art in Sapporo, Japan. The entrance to the Myrna and Sheldon Palley Pavilion for Contemporary Glass and Studio Arts at UM’s Lowe Art Museum features a site-specific glass installation by Carlson entitled Prõcellōsus (Sudden Storm).

William Carlson, an endowed UM Professor, received his MFA from Alfred University, New York State College of Ceramics. He has served as Professor of Art and Program Chair of Glass, Clay, Sculpture at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. His program at the University of Illinois was honored in 1988 by the Art Alliance for Contemporary Glass for its contributions to the contemporary glass movement.

He has also taught or developed programs at major craft education centers, including the Cleveland Institute of Art, Haystack Mountain School, Pilchuck Glass School, Penland School of Crafts and Appalachian Center for Crafts.

In 2003, Carlson joined the University of Miami College of Arts and Sciences as Professor and Chair of the Department of Art and Art History, and has successfully strengthened its programs in art history, ceramics, glass, graphic design, painting, printmaking, and sculpture.

Said Myrna Palley, “Bill is widely considered one of the most important figures in the studio glass movement, and has significantly impacted the contemporary art glass movement as both an artist and an educator. We are so proud to have him here in Miami: teaching, creating, and mentoring young artists.”

The exhibition – Aquila Non Capit Muscas – is organized by the UM Department of Art and Art History and sponsored in part by Stella Holmes and Overseas Partners Realty, Inc.

The Lowe Art Museum is located at the University of Miami at 1301 Stanford Drive, Coral Gables. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 12 to 7 p.m. Thursdays and 12 to 5 p.m. Sundays. Regular Admission (not including special events) is $10; $5 for Seniors and Non-UM Students; Free for Lowe Art Museum Members, University of Miami students, faculty and staff, and children under 12. Spiritual Awakening Art Exhibition 3/26/10

Fache Arts & Amy Alonso Gallery are pleased to announce Art Exhibition: “SPIRITUAL AWAKENING”

“Spiritual Awakening” Art Exhibition presents an intelligent art show that pretends to awake and move your inner perceptiveness, courage, and even transform the beholder-conceived ideas through reality illusions and dimensions. Not always what you see is real, and not always what you think is really a dream.
Through their absorbing canvas, Victor Mahana and Carla Fache capture the conscience‘s awakening and its traces. The scenarios reflected in each of their art pieces make the viewer transport to the threshold of the inner realities, building bridges between the visible and the invisible, reality and dream.

THE ARTISTS
“…My painting has always been the vision of vivid dreams. In simple words, I define it as figurative, concrete, detailed images of an unconscious, symbolic and irrational world. My work stands in that threshold, it is the paradox of two incompatible and sometimes opposite worlds: The real (the way of represent things) with the unreal (the subject of representation)…”
-Victor Mahana.

“…My imagination travels to non-existing dimensions that I best describe through a process of layering. When I paint, I feel as if I am hypnotized by colors and textures, all of which will create soft, thin layers that hide or reveal a mark of an unspoken feeling, emotion, or thought…”
-Carla Fache.

Don’t miss this amazing art exhibition! in conjunction with the free Jazz at Moca! Max Farber Trio will be performing a selection of classic jazz standards.

Tiempo Libre perform in Miami Beach at Byron Carlyle Theatre 4/3/10

New “Miami On Stage” Series Continues With Tiempo Libre Performing “Bach in Havana” on Saturday April 3rd at the Byron Carlyle Theater

The new Miami On Stage project, which features local performing artists on a regular basis in Miami Beach’s North Beach neighborhood, continues on Saturday, April 3 with the great timba band Tiempo Libre at the Byron Carlyle Theater. The evening features the Miami theatrical premiere performance of their Bach in Havana, a salsa meets Classical music mash-up based on the Grammy-nominated CD of the same name. The Miami On Stage series is produced by FUNDarte, one of South Florida’s most adventurous and successful presenters of alternative culture, especially with a Latin flavor.

The Cuban-born, Miami-based musicians of Tiempo Libre have catapulted onto the national stage with their clever, beautiful and danceable sound. With Bach in Havana, they took their love of the contrapointal Baroque music of J.S. Bach (having all been classically trained) and found a way to meld with the tropical, Afro-Cuban rhythms and instrumentation they usually perform. The resulting work – tuneful, playful and musically adventurous – has garnered praise and awards after being released by Sony Music. Ever Chavez, Executive Director of FUNDarte, says that, “Tiempo Libre is a Miami treasure who, with their genre-bending Bach in Havana, has received global acclaim. The nurturing of local artists who can then tour their work throughout the world is one of our goals with the Miami On Stage project.”

The Tiempo Libre concert begins at 8:00 pm at the Byron Carlyle Theater, located at 500 71st Street, on Miami Beach. Tickets for Tiempo Libre are $20 general admission, $15 students (under 25) & seniors (over 65) with I.D. Tickets may be purchased in advance through Ticketmaster at www.ticketmaster.com and by phone (800) 745-3000 (service charges apply). They are also available in-person at the Byron Carlyle the day of show and in advance at the Colony Theatre box office (1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach), Tuesday through Saturday, Noon to 5:00 pm (no service charges). A limited number of $15 discounted general admission tickets are also available for 33141 zip code buyers with I.D. in-person at both theater box offices only. More information about the Miami On Stage series and the upcoming Tiempo Libre concert can be found online at www.fundarte.us or by contacting FUNDarte at info@fundarte.us or (305) 316-6165.

Miami On Stage will continue on the first Saturday of each month, through June of this year. On May 1, again at the Byron Carlyle, there will be an evening with three solo Hip Hop theater artists, Rudi Goblen, Summer Hill Seven and Meshaun Lebrone Arnold. This program is co-presented with Miami Light Project. On June 5th there will be two performances Hilo,(Thread), by Jose Dominguez, directed by Lucia Aratanha, and Sipping Fury from a Teacup, created by Elizabeth Doud & Jennylin Duany and performed by Elizabeth Doud and Carlos Caballero. In addition to each Saturday’s featured performance, there will be free tie-in events throughout the week in the North Beach neighborhood, including panel discussions with the artists, special programs for youth and outdoor activities. These will include free yoga classes on the beach Mondays and Fridays at 7:00 am at Ocean Terrace and 73 Street, as well as a Farmer’s market in Normandy Isle Circle Saturdays from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm.
