KCC Productions and the Van Dyke Cafe present the Felipe Lamoglia Quartet, Thursday, October 28, at 9 PM. The Van Dyke is located at 846 Lincoln Road, South Beach.

Felipe Lamoglia is a Grammy-winning saxophonist, composer and arranger. Born and educated in Cuba, he is a graduate of the prestigious Superior Institute of Art (ISA). By the age of 18 he was a member of Cuba’s acclaimed dance band, NG La Banda. In 1992 he moved to Brazil where he lived for seven years, absorbing the country’s musical and spiritual wealth and playing with great artists such as Raul de Souza, Arismar do Espirito Santo and others. With Bocato he recorded two albums and participated in the Montreux Jazz Festival. While in Brazil, Felipe founded his own quartet, Tumbao, and taught at the University of Free Music in Sao Paolo.

In 1999 Lamoglia relocated to the U.S. where he immediately began performing with the late Celia Cruz. In 2001 he began playing with Grammy winner Arturo Sandoval, performing all over the world and recording on Trumpet Evolution, as well as two DVD releases: Live at the Blue Note NYC and Live at the Ann Arbor Summer Festival. In 2004 he joined Grammy winner Gonzalo Rubalcaba, recording on his Grammy-nominated album, Paseo (Blue Note).

In 2006 Lamoglia arranged and played on Ignacio Berroa’s debut album Codes, also released on Blue Note and nominated for a Grammy. In 2007 Felipe contributed as arranger, performer, and composer for Arturo Sandoval’s Grammy-winning album, Rumba Palace.

Throughout the years he has continued to develop his solo work and in 2007 released his first solo CD, Dimensions, recorded in Brazil. This album incorporated Felipe’s Afro-Cuban roots with a blend of Brazilian music and straight-ahead jazz. He is currently promoting his quintet, Afro-Cuban Beats.

Felipe has shared the stage with musical giants such as Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker, Wynton Marsalis, Eldar, Dafnis Prieto, Ignacio Berroa and many others, participating in Major Jazz Festivals in the U.S. and abroad including JVC, Playboy, Newport, Henieken Jazz, Red Sea and in venues such as Blue Note, Iridium, Jazz Standard, Yoshi’s, Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola and many more.

Eighth Annual Pet Blessing Service At St. John’s on the Lake 10/3/10

All Creatures Great (Dane) And Small
Eighth Annual “Pet Blessing” Service for the Community To Be Held At St. John’s on the Lake
October 3, at 11 a.m.
St. John’s sanctuary
4760 Pine Tree Drive, Miami Beach

September 20, 2010 – Realizing that four legged and finned companions are an integral part of many families, St. John’s on the Lake United Methodist Church is once again hosting a favorite community tradition with St. John’s new Pastor Chris McNeill conducting the eighth annual “pet blessing” service on Sunday, October 3, at 11 a.m. in the St. John’s sanctuary. The pet blessing is free and open to the entire community.

Well-behaved pets and their human companions of all faiths and denominations are welcome at this special service. Following the service, St. John’s congregation and their pet guests will host a special “yappy hour” on the church’s outdoor patio overlooking Surprise Lake. New this year will be a pet adoption and fundraising drive for Spotted Dog Animal Rescue.

“We added the dog adoption to this year’s service because there are many animals in our community that are deserving of a loving home,” said Pastor McNeill. “How blessed would these orphans be if they got adopted at a pet blessing service.”

The St. John’s pet blessing service celebrates the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and the environment. Feast Day pays homage to the founder of the Franciscan Order who was renowned as a lover of all creation, and each pet participating in the service will receive a St. Francis medallion to commemorate the day and their patron saint.

“The annual pet blessing is one of our favorite and most heartwarming community events,” said Pastor McNeill. “Our furry, finned and feathered family members are such a special part of our lives. This service gives us a chance to affirm that ‘all creatures, great and small’ are deserving of our love and care.”

St. John’s on the Lake was founded in Miami Beach in the 1920s in an upper room of Smith’s Casino on Ocean Drive, south of First Street. Today, St. John’s is celebrating its 10th year as Florida’s only Reconciling Ministry. The Reconciling Ministries Network is a growing movement of United Methodist individuals, congregations, campus ministries, and other groups working for the full participation of all people in the United Methodist Church, embracing the entire spectrum of race, age, gender, family status, sexual orientation, heritage, physical ability, economic status, and religious background.

St. John’s is located at 4760 Pine Tree Drive, Miami Beach. For more information, call the church office at (305) 531-7166 or visit www.stjohnsmiamibeach.com.

KCC Productions presents the Ernesto Simpson Quartet Thursday, Sept. 23 at 9 PM at the Van Dyke Cafe and Tuesday, Sept. 28, at 11 PM at Jazid. In the USA from Britain, Ernesto will be accompanied by Dave Siegel on piano, Nicky Orta on bass, and special guest Felipe Lamoglia on sax.

Ernesto Simpson began his musical career at an early age and had his first paying gig with his father’s band. His exposure to a variety of styles, rhythms, combined with African and Afro-Cuban, South American styles has allowed him to develop a powerful and innovative concept fitting perfectly the needs of the new collective music. His musical sophistication is matched only by his ability to play on a very high level with great consistency, freshness and unique taste. He is known for his furious commitment that soloists playing with him had to exert all their might to keep along with him.

Ernesto performs in a myriad of arenas from Jazz to R&B, Latin, ethnic and more. Because of his commitment to excel, he constantly develops new ideas with technique to spare. His love for music and respect for his instrument and peers lead him to play everything with incisive, deep, soulful perfection. Active on the New York jazz scene, he is swiftly establishing a high reputation among his peers; his incendiary riffs ignite anyone’s imagination.

Touring with recognized international bands, Ernesto Simpson’s name has become much better known in the music world. He has performed and/or shared stage with artists like Carmen McRae, Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis, Mike Stern, Michel Legrand, Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker, George Benson, Salif Keita, Tito Puente, Giovanni Hidalgo, Arturo Sandoval, Paquito D’ Rivera, Ray Barreto, Brian Lynch and Gonzalo Rubalcaba, just to name a few, he also plays for the famous Cameroonian song-writer, singer and bass player, Richard Bona.

Four Chefs for Success for Kids Benefit Night by Betty Alvarez

Chef Douglas Rodriguez Offered Guests a Preview of His Latest Restaurant, De Rodriguez Ocean, for Benefit Night

Last year, South Florida experienced some of the most extreme cases of bullying across the nation including two brutal attacks at Deerfield Beach Middle School. Looking ahead to a new school year and a clean slate, organizations like Success For Kids, a 501(C)(3) nonprofit organization, are rallying to help to empower at-risk children and adolescents to become resilient, productive citizens with the hopes of reducing what has become an epidemic of cruel behavior among today’s youth. While SFK has been able to reach 1200 children and adolescents, there are still thousands in South Florida alone who could use the skills taught by this invaluable organization. In order to raise funds to increase their reach, SFK, together with Chef Douglas Rodriguez, hosted the Four Chefs for Success for Kids benefit night at Rodriguez’s brand new restaurant, De Rodriguez Ocean, on September 15th.

The Four Chefs for Success for Kids benefit featured some of Miami’s top chefs serving up their signature dishes. Miami’s elite were invited to take in the gorgeous ocean views at De Rodriguez Ocean, while sampling these chef’s exquisite dishes and learning about SFK through conversation and interactive demonstrations by SFK teachers. Guests also took part in Heart Art- an SFK activity done in the classroom with students that teaches the power of words, the importance of choosing the right words encouraging positive communication and relationships. One school where SFK has implemented their program is Auburndale Elementary, whose Principal Ms. L. Salazar was in attendance to share her experiences. This event was a kickoff of sorts, leading up for the SFK 5K Run for Success on December 5th, 2010 in Aventura Circle.

Alongside Chef Douglas Rodriguez, featured chefs included Andrea Curto Randazzo, recent contestant on Bravo’s Top Chef: Washington DC and owner of Talula and The Water Club, and Timon Balloo of Sugarcane and Tim Andriola of Timo Restaurant & Bar. Raffle tickets were sold for guest to have the chance to win a limited edition 2011 SmartCar. Guests also enjoyed signature drinks.

The event was a preview for a lucky few hundred of Chef Douglas’s new ceviche, raw bar and sustainable seafood restaurant, De Rodriguez Ocean, scheduled to open late September. Sourcing most of its seafood product from Florida’s Finest Seafood, De Rodriguez Ocean will support artesian farmers and local fisherman while providing diners with the highest quality organic and farm-raised seafood.

Soho Beach House Opens in October 2010

The Soho House Group Introduces Miami’s Newest Private Members Club And Hotel Soho Beach House Opening October 2010
Soho Beach House
4385 Collins Avenue
Miami Beach, FL
Ph: 786 507 7900

Soho House welcomes its newest club and hotel to Miami this Fall with the opening of Soho Beach House, the brand’s third North American property. Located in Mid-Beach, just north of South Beach, the oceanfront property will be both a club for private members and boutique hotel open to the public. Soho Beach House will also include a Cowshed Spa and a Cecconi’s restaurant, both open to the public.

Soho Beach House is located on the site of the historic art-deco Sovereign Hotel, which has been redesigned and expanded to include a 16-story oceanfront tower. The 50 hotel guest rooms, ranging from 350-1500 square feet, offer ocean and bay views and feature antique furniture, king-sized beds, Samsung 40” flat screen TV’s, iPod docks, drinks cabinets and rainforest showers with signature Cowshed products. A select group of rooms boast free standing bathtubs and private terraces overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Other members and hotel guest areas include a Screening Snug, Drawing Room, indoor-outdoor bars and dining areas with lush gardens, two pools and a beach club area with full waiter service. www.sohobeachhouse.com

“The first time I stepped foot in Miami I was blown away by the sexy vibe, the beautiful art deco buildings and incredible beaches – I knew instantly I wanted to bring a Soho House there” said Soho House founder Nick Jones. “We have created properties in New York and LA, and introducing flip flop glamour to Miami seemed like the natural next step for us. The Beach House is just north of the South Beach strip. It is a place where I hope our members and guests will meet, sleep and definitely play…I am incredibly excited about throwing our doors open this fall – it’s going to be fun.”

Soho Beach House was envisioned by Nick Jones together with designer Martin Brudnizki, whose resume boasts Cecconi’s West Hollywood, London’s Scott’s, The Club at the Ivy and J Sheekey Oyster Bar. Using inspiration from Miami Beach history, the property will have a South American style while offering a taste of the brand’s characteristic, unpretentious European glamour.

Rooms
Bedrooms at Soho Beach House are available in six different sizes. With South American influences, all bedrooms are decorated with one-off pieces of antique furniture and feature king-size beds and rainforest showers stocked with Cowshed products. Most of the bedrooms overlook the ocean or waterways while a number have freestanding baths and private terraces. The entire property offers complimentary Wi-Fi and select floors have a computer nook with Macs for guests.

Ground Floor
Drawing Room – Upon entrance members will find a traditional wood-paneled Art Deco space that includes part of Soho House’s art collection, as well as a Cuban coffee bar, a collection of rare cigars and a grand piano.

The restaurant design includes antique nile green stripped tile floors, a garden of Silver Buttonwood trees and a retractable awning for indoor/outdoor dining. Cecconi’s offers an elegant and relaxed dining experience for members and guests.

Pool – The 100-foot-long pool is bordered by communal lounge beds and gardens where members and guests can relax and socialize while enjoying full waiter service.

Tiki Bar – Steps away from the pool and surrounded by a tropical garden, the Tiki Bar offers a casual secluded area for relaxing and dining on salads and grilled meats and seafood.

Beach Club – Members and their guests can enjoy the beach, lounge beds and beach huts that sit between the boardwalk and the Atlantic Ocean, with cold drinks and waiter service available. There is also a special safe area for children and provision for water sports.

Second Floor
Club Bar – Decorated in homage to 1940’s Cuba the bar features old wood paneling, antique tiles, vintage furnishings and ceiling fans. Members and hotel guests drink and dine at comfortable sofas and tables under a retractable awning with views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Screening Snug – Complete with a selection of comfortable chairs and sofas, the Snug features full digital screening capabilities for gatherings, parties and member events. Drinks and food selections can be tailored to any occasion.

The spa features six spacious ocean facing mani-pedi chairs, five private treatment rooms including a couple’s suite, steam rooms, a relaxation area, changing facilities and Cowshed’s first Blow Dry Bar. The spa offers a full range of treatments as well as a Cowshed shop. Groups can book Pretty Parties for special occasions complete with private treatments, dinner and wine for a night of sociable grooming. Design Miami/, the global forum for design, will present its sixth edition this December in a new location in Miami Beach. For the first time in the show’s history, the fair will be staged on Meridian Avenue and 19th Street, adjacent to Art Basel Miami Beach at the Miami Beach Convention Center. This year’s show will offer a more streamlined, seamless experience for the collectors, exhibitors, sponsors and general public that attend both fairs. Design Miami/ has commissioned Moorhead and Moorhead, an emerging, award-winning design studio, to create the show’s temporary structure for its new Miami Beach location. Details on this structure will be announced in the coming weeks.

“Presenting the show in Miami Beach will offer us a new context,” says Wava Carpenter, Acting Director of Design Miami/. “For the past five years, the Miami Design District provided us with a wonderfully creative and nurturing environment in which to grow our brand and the neighborhood will always be an integral part of the Design Miami/ identity. At the same time, we are tremendously excited by the opportunities a move to Miami Beach affords us in terms of evolving our show and making it more accessible to a wider audience.”

Craig Robins, Co-founder and Principal of Design Miami/ states: “The move to Miami Beach will create value for our collectors, exhibitors, sponsors, partners and those who come to take part in our events. The growth of both the Miami Design District and Design Miami/ in recent years has been extraordinary. This move to the Beach will allow the programming in the District to evolve and flourish, while creating an entirely new set of opportunities for Design Miami/.”

In his other role as Chief Executive Officer and President of Dacra, Robins is widely credited with having transformed both South Beach and the Miami Design District into world-renowned centers for cutting-edge art, design, food and fashion, making the fair’s move to Miami Beach especially significant for him.

In 2009, Design Miami/ Basel relocated to Hall 5, in the Messe complex that houses Art Basel in Basel, Switzerland. The response to the proximity from collectors, dealers, and sponsors was overwhelmingly positive, with the 2009 and 2010 Basel shows setting records for Design Miami/ in terms of sales and attendance. A similar response is expected for the move of the upcoming Miami show.

The sixth edition of Design Miami/, opening November 30, 2010, promises to be the most dynamic yet. An eclectic, international mix of participating galleries and bold cultural programming will be announced shortly. For further information, visit www.designmiami.com and www.designmiamiblog.com.

The Ninth Edition of the Most Prestigious Art Show in the Americas

From December 2 through 5, Miami Beach, Florida, will host the ninth edition of
Art Basel Miami Beach, the international art show. More than 250 leading galleries from North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa will take part, showing works by more than 2,000 artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.

After launching last year, the Oceanfront exhibition area returns again to Art Basel Miami Beach 2010, sited in an environment designed by young architects Phu Hoang and Rachely Rotem. The Oceanfront Nights program, curated by Creative Time, spotlights the cultural scenes of Berlin, Detroit, Glasgow, and Mexico City.

Art Basel Miami Beach 2010 will run from December 2 through December 5, 2010, with an exclusive VIP opening on December 1. Galleries selected from 29 countries will showcase paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations, photography, editions, and videos. The show’s list of participating galleries makes Art Basel Miami Beach the most prestigious art show of the Americas, featuring both highly established galleries and dynamic newcomers. (The full list of exhibitors can be found at www.artbasel.com/sectors). Prices range from a few hundred dollars, for multiples by young artists, to several million dollars for museum-quality masterpieces.

Prominent guests from around the world will attend the exclusive opening on December 1. Many major global museums are organizing trips to Florida, and numerous groups of art collectors from Latin America and Europe have already announced their visits. During the show’s five-day run, more than 40,000 visitors are expected at Art Basel Miami Beach 2010.

Art Galleries sector
The Art Basel Miami Beach Selection Committee – comprised of 12 renowned international gallerists – has picked more than 180 galleries for the main sector of this year’s show. More than half of the exhibitors come from outside the United States, with strong participation from Europe, 20 galleries from Latin America, eight galleries from Asia and two from Africa. The following galleries are exhibiting for the first time: Cernuda Arte (Coral Gables), Leslie Feely Fine Art (New York), Hackett Mill (San Francisco), Galerie Rodolphe Janssen (Bruxelles), Sabine Knust Maximilian Verlag (München), Jorge Mara – La Ruche Gallery (Buenos Aires), Nyehaus (New York), Franklin Parrasch Gallery (New York), Gary Snyder (New York). The following galleries are returning to the Art Galleries after a one-year hiatus: Galería Juana de Aizpuru (Madrid), The Approach (London), Arndt (Berlin), Luis Campaña (Köln), David Nolan Gallery (New York), Anthony Reynolds Gallery (London), Sprüth Magers Berlin London (Berlin), Galerie Bob van Orsouw (Zürich), Waddington Galleries (London), Washburn Gallery (New York), Donald Young Gallery (Chicago).

Art Kabinett sector
In the Art Kabinett program, galleries selected for the Art Galleries sector present small curated exhibitions in a separately delineated space within their booth. The exhibition concepts for the 20 Art Kabinetts are diverse, including thematic group exhibitions, art-historical solo shows and showcases for rising stars.

Art Nova sector
In this year’s Art Nova sector, 50 emerging and established galleries from 17 countries are presenting new works by either two or three artists. In all, recent pieces by 131 artists will be on display, providing visitors an opportunity to see pieces fresh from studios around the globe – and making the sector an ideal place to spot the newest artistic tendencies.

Art Positions sector
The new criteria for Art Positions creates a platform for a single major project from one artist, allowing curators, critics and collectors to discover ambitious new talents. The sector presents 14 young galleries from seven different countries, showcasing cutting-edge single projects by the artists Hany Armanious (1962), Jorge Méndez Blake (1974), Brian Bress (1975), François Bucher (1972), Dario Escobar (1971), Fernanda Fragateiro (1962), Nikolas Gambaroff (1979), Eddie Martinez (1977), Gabriel Sierra (1975), Kara Tanaka (1983), Johanna Unzuetta (1974), Phil Wagner (1974), Judi Werthein (1967) and Héctor Zamora (1974).

Art Public
Art Public, curated for the second time by Patrick Charpenel of Guadalajara, Mexico, features projects by internationally renowned artists. Selected from proposals by the galleries of Art Basel Miami Beach, the projects are installed in the outdoor public spaces of Miami Beach, within close proximity to Oceanfront area and the Miami Beach Convention Center. These works will engage directly with the spectator, interrupting the daily routine of passersby in poetic and surprising ways.

The Oceanfront
Occupying an entire city block directly at the heart of Miami Beach’s waterfront, the Oceanfront exhibition area will be purpose-built for the presentation of contemporary art, performance, video, and live music every night. Selected by Art Basel Miami Beach and Creative Time as the winners of an architectural contest, architects Phu Hoang and Rachely Rotem will deploy thousands of feet of reflective rope to create this temporary space.

The Oceanfront Nights program for 2010 features four cities at the forefront of today’s artistic experimentation and cross-disciplinary collaboration: Berlin, Detroit, Glasgow, and Mexico City. From December 1 to December 4, the diverse program will spotlight one city per night, featuring music, video, performances and more. Art Basel Miami Beach and Creative Time have invited four organizations to partner on creating these Oceanfront nights – the Museum of Contemporary Art in Detroit, Museo Tamayo in Mexico City, Tramway in Glasgow, and 032c in Berlin.

Art Basel Conversations
Art Basel Conversations offers audiences access to first-hand information on important aspects of the international artworld, starting the program with the traditional Artist Talk Premiere featuring a legendary artist. Topics for the following panel discussions include ‘Public/Private: Museums in the Digital Age,’ ‘Latin America: The Collector as Catalyst’ and ‘Artistic Practice: The School Makers.’ Distinguished artists, art collectors, museum directors, curators, critics, gallerists, publishers, and others active in the cultural sphere will take part. There is time allotted after each Art Basel Conversation for the audience to meet the panel informally.

Art Salon
Situated in the entrance D area of the Miami Beach Convention Center, Art Salon is a platform for discussion by artworld figures presenting their projects, with an emphasis on the most current themes in contemporary art. Informal in format but international in scope, it also features book launches, artist talks, roundtable discussions and lectures.

Art Film
Art Film is curated by Zurich film connaisseur This Brunner and will feature the award-winning film ‘Waste Land,’ which follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home base in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world’s largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There he photographs an eclectic band of ‘catadores’ – pickers of recyclable materials, to create a new series of works.

Museums and Private Collections
Once again, Miami’s leading private collections – among them the Rubell Family Collection, CIFO, the de la Cruz Collection Contemporary Art Space and Home, and the Dacra Collection – will be opening their homes and warehouses to guests of the international art show. The museums of South Florida, too, will be staging important exhibitions to coincide with Art Basel Miami Beach, including: ‘Susan Rothenberg: Moving in Place’ at the Miami Art Museum; ‘Isaac Julien’ at the Bass Museum; ‘John Storrs: Machine-Age Modernist’ and ‘Nick Cave: Meet Me at the Center of the Earth’ at the Norton Museum; ‘Seduce Me,’ a collaboration by Isabella Rossellini, Andy Byers, and Rick Gilbert at the Wolfsonian-FIU; ‘Bruce Weber: Haiti/Little Haiti’ and ‘Jonathan Meese: Sculpture’ at MOCA Miami; Jim Drain at Locust Projects and the Pearl and Stanley Goodman Latin American Collection at the Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale.

Sponsors and Partners
In 2010, UBS continues its longstanding and successful partnership with Art Basel and
Art Basel Miami Beach. The firm has been main sponsor of Art Basel for the past seventeen years and main sponsor of Art Basel Miami Beach since the show’s inception in 2002. The world-renowned jeweler Cartier supports Art Basel Miami Beach as Associate Sponsor, as do NetJets, the first and largest fractional aircraft ownership company in the world, and AXA Art, the globally active specialty art and collectibles insurance company, which will again provide multilingual VIP guided tours at
Art Basel Miami Beach. Furniture is provided by Moroso. Additional partners can be found at www.artbasel.com/sponsors.

Guided Tours
The ArtNexus guided tours in English and Spanish are available daily during show hours from Thursday to Sunday. There will be general tours of the show and special tours for Art Kabinett. For reservations and information contact Sol Romero: Tel. +1 305 891 7270, ext. 4; tours@artnexus.com. Host Commitee
The Art Basel Miami Beach Host Committee, which comprises over two hundred prominent figures from the local cultural, political, and business communities, demonstrates its ongoing commitment to this international art event by offering a friendly welcome to the area for exhibitors and guests.

Design Miami

Design Miami will for the first time be located in close proximity to the Miami Beach Convention Center. www.designmiami.com.

The Wolfsonian–Fiu Exclusive Dinner During Art Basel Miami Beach Featuring Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten 12/1/10

“The Arts Of Seduction”
The Wolfsonian–Fiu To Host An Exclusive Dinner During Art Basel| Miami Beach Featuring The Cuisine Of World-Renowned Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten And Exclusive Wines Flown In From Robert Mondavi Winery Honoring Filmmaker And Actress Isabella Rossellini, In Partnership With Bvlgari
Wednesday evening, December 1, 2010

The Wolfsonian–Florida International University announces an extraordinary evening where the art of film, food, wine, and design converge at a time when Miami is host to one of the most prestigious art and design fairs in the world. The museum will bring together world-renowned chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten and Margrit Mondavi—along with rare wines from the Robert Mondavi Winery—to celebrate the work of Isabella Rossellini, who is collaborating with The Wolfsonian during Art Basel for a site-specific project titled Seduce Me. An auction will follow dinner, featuring large format bottles of Robert Mondavi Winery from a variety of vintages, a special bag designed by Rossellini for Bulgari and a Bulgari men’s watch. This multi-sensory experience will take place at the museum on Wednesday evening, December 1, 2010. Only 100 tickets will be available.

Seduce Me is a new installation commissioned by the museum, which takes its name from a series of short videos produced, directed, written, and performed by Rossellini, exploring the unconventional seduction rituals of creatures ranging from bugs to cuttlefish. Rossellini notes, “After my comical series, Green Porno, on how animals mate, I wanted to showcase a new series about how animals seduce each other with different, varied and incredible strategies…they might give us some new ideas about how to conquer our mates!” The videos feature Rossellini speaking directly to the camera about the creature at hand, and uses animation, paper cut-outs, and puppets made by Andy Byers and art directed by Rick Gilbert, to illustrate its particular, often peculiar, mating strategies. The Seduce Me installation will be presented in the lobby and the auditorium from Wednesday, December 1 through Sunday, December 5, 2010 at The Wolfsonian.

The gala benefit is being supported by Robert Mondavi Winery, which has a long tradition of enriching life by embracing wine, food, and the arts that was largely initiated by Margrit Mondavi when she joined Robert Mondavi in business back in 1967. Under her direction, Robert Mondavi Winery developed original cultural and culinary arts programs that are now benchmarks for the wine world. With the enthusiastic support of her late husband, she created a showplace for painters, sculptors, photographers, jazz and

classical musicians and the great chefs of the world, including Jean-Georges Vongerichten, with whom she developed a long-standing friendship. Jean-Georges is preparing an original menu to complement a selection of Robert Mondavi Winery selections, including the I-Block Fume Blanc, a limited production wine that is only available at the Winery, crafted from the oldest Sauvignon Blanc vines in the country within the esteemed To Kalon Vineyard. Another highlight will include a library vintage Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve in addition to the current 2007 vintage.

The Wolfsonian is delighted to partner with Bulgari, the Italian luxury brand known for its exceptional jewels, watches, accessories, fragrances and hotels. Isabella has commented, “My connection with Bulgari dates back to when I was a child and I’d accompany my mother to the historic shop in Via Condotti in Rome. She loved Bulgari jewels; I remember the ones she bought very clearly. Still today, when I’m traveling and I come across a Bulgari store, I feel a pleasant sense of familiarity that makes me feel close to the beauty and subtlety of Italian culture, of my own roots.” This year, Isabella collaborated with Bulgari to create the Rossellini Handbag, a handbag distinguished by simple, essential lines that reflects the beauty and rigor of its muse. Bulgari’s generous support of the Wolfsonian event honoring Rossellini further celebrates the brand’s connection to her.

Speaking of the very special occasion being planned for December 1, Cathy Leff, director of The Wolfsonian notes, “I am so thrilled and honored that the illustrious chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten has accepted our invitation to prepare an extraordinary meal for the occasion and that Margrit Mondavi will attend to represent Robert Mondavi Winery—enabling the museum not only to celebrate our collaboration with Isabella Rossellini, but also to showcase the culinary arts and seduce the international crowd that will descend on Miami Beach this year. Further, our partnership with Bulgari enhances our relationship with Italian design and ensures a most stylish evening.”

Tickets to this exclusive dinner are $1,000 per person; capacity is limited. For additional information, contact Michael Hughes at 305.535.2602 or michael@thewolf.fiu.edu.

About Robert Mondavi Winery and Margrit Mondavi
Robert Mondavi’s pioneering vision stands on three pillars: putting California wines in the company of the great wines of the world; creating a wine culture that put a diverse range of California wines on every American table; and enriching life by embracing wine, food, and the arts as an integral part of gracious living. Founded in 1966, Robert Mondavi Winery is the shining symbol of Napa Valley. The first major winery built in Napa Valley in the three decades since the repeal of Prohibition (1933), Robert Mondavi Winery went on to establish the foundation for the modern-day California wine business. With the philosophy that great wines reflect their origins, Robert Mondavi Winery pursues the fullest expression of the terroir of its Napa Valley vineyards. For additional information about Robert Mondavi Winery visit www.robertmondavi.com.

Margrit Biever Mondavi is Vice President of Cultural Affairs at Robert Mondavi Winery. A pioneering woman of the modern-day California wine industry, she joined the winery in 1967, pursuing a life-long interest in uniting wine with fine arts, music and culinary artistry. A native of Appenzell, Switzerland, Margrit was raised in her family home overlooking Lake Maggiore, in the canton of Ticino, nurtured by parents with a passion for opera and symphonic music, good wine and fine food. About Isabella Rossellini
Moving easily from early forays into comedy and television reporting to roles in movies, television, and stage productions and from an illustrious international modeling career (as the face of Lancôme for 14 years) and developing her own brand of cosmetics to writing and philanthropy, and after appearing in more than 40 films (Blue Velvet, Death Becomes Her, The Saddest Music in the World, Infamous) and 25 made-for-television movies/series (Alias, Discovery Atlas: Italy Revealed, Iconoclasts, 30 Rock), Isabella Rossellini turned her eye to film making. Her debut was her mischievous and witty film, My Dad is 100 Years Old, a pretend dialogue about the essence of film. In it, Rossellini appears as herself, speaks her father’s words, and also brilliantly portrays Fellini, Selznick, Hitchcock, Chaplin, and her own mother, notable actress Ingrid Bergman, whom she strikingly resembles.

Rossellini recently wrapped production on French director Julie Gavras’ romantic comedy Late Bloomers, opposite William Hurt, which is set for release in 2011. She also stars in the following films: Keyhole, directed by Guy Maddin; Chicken with Plums, directed by Marjane Satrapi; and The Solitude of Prime Numbers, directed by Saverio Costanzo.

In 2008 Robert Redford’s Sundance Channel commissioned Rossellini to make a series of short films to address the issues of the environment. She chose the mating habits of bugs and called her series Green Porno which has been celebrated in film festivals here and abroad. In 2009, she won the Webby Award for “Best Individual Performance” for Green Porno. She has once again been nominated this year for the same award. For the second series, which involves sea creatures, she took courses in biology at New York University. In addition to the shorts on the Sundance Channel, a book of Green Porno was released last fall which included all three seasons of the shorts: http://www.sundancechannel.com/greenporno/

On the heels of the great success of Green Porno, Rossellini has partnered up with Sundance again for a new series about animal courtship entitled Seduce Me. The first five short films became available on video on demand in the spring and the second five will be released in November 2010.

Rossellini is also a wildlife activist and dedicated trainer of Labrador puppies for the blind. She was recently honored by The Audubon Society for her work. She has written three books: Some of Me, Looking at Me, and In the Name of the Father, the Daughter and the Holy Spirits: Remembering Roberto Rossellini. Between movie and film making projects, she lectures at performing arts centers throughout the United States and Canada.

About Jean-Georges Vongerichten
Jean Georges Vongerichten, one of the world’s most famous chefs, is a savvy businessman and restaurateur and responsible for the operation and success of a constellation of three- and four-star restaurants worldwide.

Born and raised on the outskirts of Strasbourg in Alsace, France, Jean-Georges’ earliest family memories are about food. He trained in a work-study program at the Auberge de l’Ill and as an apprentice to Chef Paul Haeberlin. He went on to work under Paul Bocuse and Master Chef Louis Outhier at L’Oasis in southern France. With this impressive three-star Michelin training, Jean-Georges traveled to Asia and took positions at the Oriental Hotel in Bangkok, the Meridien Hotel in Singapore, and the Mandarin Hotel in Hong Kong.

It was during this time spent working and traveling throughout Asia that Jean-Georges developed his love for the exotic and aromatic flavors of the East. His signature cuisine abandons the traditional use of meat stocks and creams and instead features the intense flavors and textures from vegetable juices, fruit essences, light broths, and herbal vinaigrettes. Jean-Georges’ culinary vision has redefined industry standards and revolutionized the way we eat.

Jean-Georges has published several cookbooks reflecting his influential style of cooking, including Simple Cuisine (Wiley, 1990); Cooking at Home with a Four Star Chef (Broadway Books, 1998), for which he won the Best Cookbook Award from the James Beard Foundation in 1999; and Simple to Spectacular (Broadway Books, 2000). In October 2007, he released Asian Flavors of Jean-Georges, featuring beloved recipes from his restaurants Spice Market, Vong, and 66.

Involved in every aspect of his restaurants, from concept, to menu, to architectural design, staff selection and all the finishing touches, Jean-Georges and partner Phil Suarez have worked together for over seventeen years to create restaurants that are both timely and enduring. Inspired by his travels, Jean-Georges is constantly developing fresh concepts and evolving as a chef and restaurateur, both adapting to and impacting the global culinary landscape.

2009 was a whirlwind for Chef Vongerichten and his seasoned team. They opened 7 restaurants in cities across the United States, and one in Vancouver, Canada. Today, Jean-Georges is working on two projects in New York—the Mark by Jean-Georges, at the Mark Hotel, and ABC Kitchen, at ABC Carpet & Home. The latter is another pioneering step for Chef Vongerichten, where he will be cooking local, sustainable food in an equally local and sustainable space.

Jean-Georges is the Master Cook for Food & Wine magazine. He has appeared on Live! With Regis and Kelly, the Today Show, Good Morning America, The Martha Stewart Show, The Early Show on CBS, Top Chef, the Food Network, and in the 1995 PBS series In Julia’s Kitchen with Master Chefs.

Jean-Georges has made culinary history and developed a reputation as remarkable as his food by tapping his deep understanding of the restaurant world and pairing it with his forward-thinking vision. Yet, after years of success, Jean-Georges’ favorite retreat is still the kitchen and his favorite meals dished from a street cart in Thailand.

The Wolfsonian–Fiu Presents Isabella Rossellini Seduce Me An Installation In Celebration of Art Basel Miami Beach 12/1-5/10

The Wolfsonian–Florida International University presents Seduce Me, a collaboration with Isabella Rossellini, Andy Byers, and Rick Gilbert in celebration of Art Basel | Miami Beach 2010.
Wednesday, December 1 through Sunday, December 5, 2010
The Wolfsonian
1001 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach, FL

Seduce Me is an installation project that takes its name from a series of short videos created by Isabella Rossellini exploring the unconventional seduction rituals of creatures ranging from bugs to cuttlefish. A site-specific project commissioned for The Wolfsonian, it features complex and imaginative paper sculptures made by Andy Byers that are used in the videos for sets, props, and costumes, and the Seduce Me videos created, produced, directed, written, and performed by Rossellini and produced and art directed by Rick Gilbert.

“The Seduce Me videos, the brainchild of Isabella Rossellini’s fertile mind, are realized by an extraordinary team of creative talent,” explains Marianne Lamonaca, The Wolfsonian’s associate director for curatorial affairs and education.” Elaborating on the themes of the videos, Andy Byers has designed for The Wolfsonian a fantastical landscape, populated by awe-inspiring creatures and made primarily of paper, that conveys the complex, ingenious, and precious attributes of nature.”
The Seduce Me installation will be presented in the lobby and the auditorium, from Wednesday, December 1 through Sunday, December 5, 2010 at The Wolfsonian.

Regarding the videos, Rossellini notes, “After my comical series, Green Porno, on how animals mate, I wanted to showcase a new series about how animals seduce each other with different, varied and incredible strategies…they might give us some new ideas about how to conquer our mates!” The videos feature Rossellini speaking directly to the camera about the creature at hand, and uses animation, paper cut-outs, and puppets to illustrate its particular, often peculiar, mating strategies. The upcoming episodes of Seduce Me can be found at http://www.sundancechannel.com/greenporno/video/.

The site also features episodes of Green Porno, Rossellini’s multiple Webby Award-winning series, along with exclusive photos and videos.

Other events in conjunction with the Seduce Me installation include a reception on Friday, December 3 at 8pm, which is open to Art Basel | Miami Beach and Design Miami VIP cardholders as well as Wolfsonian Diplomat-level members and above.

Coltorti Miami opens at 1111 Lincoln Road

Famed Italian-based luxury women’s boutique Coltorti, names The brpr Group as agency of record. The alliance emanates from Coltorti’s recent move to extend the breadth of their fashion syndicate into the United States- opening at the newly completed 1111 Lincoln Road, which is the latest offering from visionary developer Robert Wennett and celebrated architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron.

The brpr Group will spearhead art direction and media placement for the Coltorti advertising effort in the U.S, in addition to integrating social media, with traditional public relations strategies, as a part of the over all campaign. “The Coltorti team was very selective when we sought representation from a Brand Management/Public Relations Firm, and we feel strongly that The brpr Group’s young and modern approach will effectively deliver our message to the U.S market,” explained President of Coltorti USA, Maurizio Coltorti.

Coltorti has long served as an international hub for Europe’s fashion forward in search of the ultimate in avant-garde brands from Derek Lamb, Balmain, Fendi, Missoni, Moncler, Prada, Valentino, and Dolce & Gabbana – just to name a few – and Miami has become one of the favored destinations for this jet set clientele. “Miami has a wonderful mix of South American and Mediterranean influences when it comes to lifestyle and fashion choices and we wanted to bring the “Coltorti way” re-interpreted, into Miami-chic. The Miami woman is certainly carving out her own place in fashion, with a very particular style, much in the same way you would look at a New Yorker or Parisian, and of course an Italian. I am confident that Coltorti will become a great resource for them to expand and express themselves fully. Our long history in Italy affords us great relationships with the top designers worldwide. We have exclusive arrangements for pieces from such coveted design houses as Moncler which you will only find in Florida at Coltorti Miami” explains Coltorti Managing Director Marzio Torcianti.

With six store locations in Italy, each boasting its own selection of exclusive luxury designer labels; Coltorti has branded itself as the epitome of true Italian shopping: playing the role of curator to nearly a century of fashion trends, garnering an impeccable reputation as one of Europe’s eminent purveyors of fashion. Now, Coltorti looks to build a similar following in the U.S market with the launch of Coltorti Miami. The success of Coltorti’s Miami offering is in the unique formula Coltorti employs of marrying merchandising to a stunning aesthetic of the brands the store represents.

“Coltorti will bring a Bal Harbour sensibility to South Beach, greatly expanding the choices of the Miami consumer. The most accurate characterization of Coltorti is to call them a high-fashion insurgent. I have not seen fashion of this caliber, presented in this way on South Beach and I think Coltorti will build a cult like following relatively quickly. There is a great synergy between our two camps and with brpr’s strong reputation in the worlds of fashion, and social media in the public relations industry, I think it is a great fit. We could not be more proud to call Coltorti a brpr ‘spouse’,” explains Gerard Bush, Creative Director for The brpr Group.

Patrons of Coltorti Miami can expect the unmatched service of personal shoppers and stylists to service their every need. The variety of shoes, bags and accessories offered are assembled from a discerning buying process to match the discriminate taste of the new Coltorti Miami clientele. Look for Coltorti to become the Mecca for Miami’s fashion obsessed. For more information on Coltorti or for a private tour please contact Danielle Ellis- Danielle@brprgroup.com

A Very Wolfsonian Weekend its Fifteenth Anniversary 11/11-13/10

Not Just Another Weekend: It’s ‘A Very Wolfsonian Weekend’
The Museum Celebrates its Fifteenth Anniversary with a Weekend of Festivities, November 11-13, 2010

Thursday, November 11
Speed Limits Exhibition Celebration
This exhibition explores the role of speed in modern life and commemorates the hundredth anniversary of Italian Futurism. The Wolfsonian is organizing an international affair with the Canadian, French, and Italian consulates to mark the celebration. Attending will be Canadian Consul General Louise L. Léger, French Consul General Gaël de Maisonneuve, and Italian Consul General Marco Rocca. To honor the French consulate’s twenty-fifth anniversary in Miami, French artist Laurent Moriceau will be on hand to present a fascinating “wine” performance, Le Vin des Minutes.

Friday, November 12
The Wolfsonian Quince
The museum celebrates its fifteenth birthday with a Miami-style quinceañera, hosted by The Wolfsonian Visionaries, a recently organized group of members who are passionate about design and interested in working with the museum to develop innovative events, strengthen community ties and networks, and raise funds to support museum exhibitions and activities. The night includes a silent auction offering fabulous trips, one-of-a-kind experiences, and more.

Saturday, November 13
Community Open House
This community celebration of speed and the Speed Limits exhibition, architecture, and food is the museum’s way of thanking the community for fifteen years of support. There will be a variety of guided tours presented in conjunction with the Miami Design Preservation League and conducted on foot, bicycle, and other modes of transportation that highlight the exhibition, Miami Beach architecture, and the speed of locomotion. In addition, the day features a participatory culinary performance by Laurent Moriceau titled Do you moule a Merveiles?

The Wolfsonian is located at 1001 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach, FL. Admission is $7 for adults; $5 for seniors, students, and children age 6-12; and free for Wolfsonian members, State University System of Florida staff and students with ID, and children under six.

The Wolfsonian–Florida International University announces the celebration of its fifteenth anniversary with A Very Wolfsonian Weekend, the museum’s annual fundraising extravaganza, Thursday, November 11 through Saturday, November 13, 2010.

The Wolfsonian’s fifteenth anniversary festivities officially kick off with a series of events that begins on Thursday, November 11th, the date in 1995 when the museum opened its doors on Washington Avenue. The celebratory happenings during A Very Wolfsonian Weekend include an international collaboration to mark the opening of Speed Limits, an exhibition co-organized by The Wolfsonian and the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) and commemorating the French Consulate’s twenty-fifth anniversary in Miami; a coming-of-age Quince on Friday evening hosted by The Wolfsonian Visionaries; and a Saturday afternoon community open house highlighting speed, architecture, and food.

“This is a momentous occasion for us,” says Wolfsonian director Cathy Leff. “In just fifteen years, The Wolfsonian has developed an international reputation; produced innovative and provocative exhibitions and programs; joined forces with an outstanding public research university; and demonstrated an unwavering commitment to our constituents. We’re so proud of our accomplishments, and of the many, many people who have helped make it all possible.”

In addition to the weekend activities, The Wolfsonian is also honoring its milestone fifteenth birthday with the publication of an autobiography, 1995-2010 and Beyond: Portrait of an Institution on its 15th Anniversary ($37.95), containing key information about the institution’s past, present, and future. The 114-page, highly illustrated, full-color publication—available through the online bookstore Blurb—is a compilation of facts about the institution, lists of accomplishments, images from the collection, and quotes about the museum’s impact from a variety of sources including renowned art critics and local educators who have participated in Wolfsonian programs. A section of the book is devoted to goals for the future, providing readers with a fascinating glimpse at ways in which The Wolfsonian plans to build on the strong foundation of the first fifteen years.

“It’s our birthday. Help us celebrate by buying yourself this book. Our autobiography is a gift to our constituents as well as a gift to us,” says Leff. “It is our hope that through learning our story, the remarkable accomplishments of our first fifteen years, and our future goals, we will motivate others to help us achieve our long-term objectives.”

The Wolfsonian is a museum, library, and research center that uses objects to illustrate the persuasive power of art and design, to explore what it means to be modern, and to tell the story of social, historical, and technological changes that have transformed our world. The collections comprise approximately 120,000 objects from the period of 1885 to 1945—the height of the Industrial Revolution to the end of the Second World War—in a variety of media including furniture; industrial-design objects; works in glass, ceramics, and metal; rare books; periodicals; ephemera; works on paper; paintings; textiles; and medals.

Treetop Ballroom of Jungle Island
Tickets On Sale Now

Break out the bellbottoms, pull out the polyester and get ready to channel Donna Summer as Pridelines Youth Services presents it fifth annual adult gala fundraiser – “Boogie Nights – A Flashback to the ‘70s.” The cocktail reception, silent auction, dinner and dance will flashback to the era of Greg and Marsha Brady on Saturday, September 11, beginning at 7 p.m. in the Treetop Ballroom of Jungle Island. Tickets are $100 each or $1,000 for a table of 10 and are available at www.pridelines.org.

“The adult gala is one of the most anticipated Pridelines events of the year,” said Victor Diaz-Herman, executive director. “This year, we’re returning to our roots with a prom-themed gala so Pridelines supporters can re-live the prom they probably never had, with a date they probably weren’t allowed to take. And it will all take place under the disco ball, of course.”

Money raised from the gala goes to support Pridelines’ mission of educating and empowering South Florida’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and questioning (LGBTQ) youth and their straight allies through programming, counseling, support and referral services from a safe and diverse environment. In addition to proceeds from ticket sales, an exciting silent auction will help raise funds for the organization. Among the items and experiences up for the highest bid is a seven-night stay in Buenos Aires.

Underwriting for “Boogie Nights” is graciously provided by 42 Below vodka, with additional support from Mystique Flowers and Events. Diaz-Herman says additional sponsorship opportunities are still available by contacting him at (305) 571-9601.

Pridelines Youth Services is a grassroots 501(c)(3) non-profit organization created by gay youth for gay youth and their allies in the wake of Anita Bryant’s “Save Our Children” campaign. Pridelines’ mission is to support, educate and empower South Florida’s LGBTQ youth in a safe and diverse environment as well as to foster dialogue and cultivate social change. For more than 28 years, Pridelines has provided safe space, social support, skills building, leadership development and referrals to mental health, health care and support services for LGBTQ youth and their straight allies between the ages of 13 and 24.

Pridelines is located at 9526 NE 2nd Avenue, Suite 104, in Miami Shores. For more information about Pridelines, call (305) 571-9601, or visit www.pridelines.org.

Two Side Live at Living Room South Beach 8/22/10

With The City Beaming Over Lebron, Miami Rapper & Producer Two Side Also“Takes His Talents To South Beach”

Two Side’s next performance will be on Sunday August 22nd at 7pm in South Beach at Living Room located at 671 Washington Ave. For tickets email: twosidemusic@gmail.com.

To say that things have been a bit…nuts in Miami this summer is quite an understatement. The expectations and prayers of an entire city were met the moment some tall black dude went on TV and uttered the words “….I’ve decided to take my talents to South Beach”. You may have heard of him. That of course turned down the happy in a lot of places but, that’s for their therapists to handle. In the city of Miami, Lebron James joining Dwayne Wade, and Chris Bosh thrown in for good measure has perked the city up more than just a little bit, and game one is yet to be played. No one really cares what Charles Barkley says, not here.

A city known for it’s party atmosphere and it’s ability to make celebrities let their hair down, it is not a stranger to good times. Add to that bikinis and Lamborghini’s parading on Ocean Drive for no special reason, it’s no wonder why so many out-of-towners deposit regularly in their piggy banks for that SOBE getaway. However for Miami hip-hop artist Two Side this is home sweet home.

Local entertainment should benefit greatly from the Lebron, Wade, and Bosh triple threat, that’s to be expected. But this upswing isn’t just related to the flashy nightclubs, which already draws the stars to come out and play, but also to the local music scene which should feel the effects of the attention the city will now command. For independent artists and musicians in the magic city, that’s music to their ears. For those who haven’t really thought about it, think about it. This could actually be a sweet deal. And a much needed one.

An indie scene that sometimes seems to only live in the shadows of Miami, is alive and kicking, though sometimes kicking at the wall. There have been a few that have made it out and through the door in the name of the MIA; giving hope to those still looking for the key. The list of artists that went from the front line grind, to stardom includes names like Uncle Luke, Trick Daddy, Trina, Pitbull, Flo Rida, Rick Ross, T-pain, Plies and Cool and Dre to name a few.

As great as that list is however, it fails to give us the true feel for the amount of talent that’s simmering all across the city and surrounding area. For those that are truly about their business this could be a great chapter in the local music scene. Who will take advantage of this? What new artists will emerge as the byproduct of this madness caused by it’s friendly local basketball team? It’s not the easiest thing to predict, however Miami rapper/producer Two Side, is doing his part to make sure, he’s on that list.
Growing with the popularity of his You Tube channel thetwoshow1, and his recent performances, people are taking notice. His single, available on Itunes, “Moonlight and Stars” written and produced by Two Side (listen on You Tube) is usually all it takes for a new fan to be born. This is something this Miami rapper doesn’t take lightly.

“Man, I don’t even know what to say about the love you know? It’s nice to get that kind of response from people, you work really hard as an unsigned artist to get people’s attention, so when finally you start getting a response you know, it makes it all so worth it. I got a long way to go, I mean, I want millions of people to know my work, but I’m working on it. So far so good”

With the momentum Two Side has and the fresh new energy in the Miami air thanks to Lebron and the gang, timing could not be better for this budding artist to come out blazing like Yosemite Sam. “It’s crazy what Miami feels like right now, I’m lovin it man. My grind is always up, but this is definitely kickin’ it up a gear.”

Two Side’s next performance will be on Sunday August 22nd at 7pm in South Beach at Living Room located at 671 Washington Ave. For tickets email: twosidemusic@gmail.com.
“I’ve decided to also take my talents to South Beach on the 22nd, haha. So I’m looking forward to getting on that stage and do what I do at Living Room. Those who’ve gone to a show, you know how I do it. Those who haven’t, come through and get to know Two Side. It’s could be the start of long relationship.”

Segafredo L’Originale on Lincoln Road Florida’s First Celebrates 10 Years of Success 8/29/10

Segafredo on Lincoln Road Celebrates THE BIG 1-0 with DJ MR. V. and MISS PATTY Spinning on Stage and a Rocking Block Party!
Segafredo L’Originale’s 10TH ANNIVERSARY Block Party with DJ Mr. V. and Miss Patty
1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, FL 33139
Sunday August 29th, 2010 at 5pm

Segafredo on Lincoln Road, also referred to as L’Originale, will be celebrating its 10th year in business as the first Segafredo branch to open in Florida, on Sunday August 29th, 2010 at 5pm with a block party, music by DJ Mr. V. and Miss Patty, and giveaways!

Segafredo L’Originale has been the gathering spot for thousands of locals and tourists since its doors opened in 2000 under the ownership and management of Graziano Sbroggio and Mark Soyka. The boutique Italian cafe received a boost to its popularity with the innovative and dynamic concept brought in by Luca Voltarel, then manager, today a partner, of serving cocktails and playing great music – one of Voltarel’s true passions.

The success was almost immediate and Segafredo developed a cult-like following made up of skateboarders, beach-goers, club-goers, pet-lovers and an infinite mix of extraordinary personalities from all over the world! On August 29th 2010, the block party celebration will showcase the best of what Segafredo has to offer: music, dancing, drinks and the eclectic clientele that defines South Beach.

A stage will be set up on Lenox Avenue where DJ Mr. V. and Miss Patty will be spinning their best tunes with roadblocks surrounding the immediate area for the occasion. Mr. V. is known for his original productions and remixes taking a trip back in time to dance music’s golden age. His music embraces people’s differences and creates a homogeneous vibe, a perfect match to Segafredo’s loyal customers.

Although the buzz is always palpable directly in front of the venue, simultaneously, Segafredo is able to offer a perfect balance with different environments such as romantic tables by the fountain or lounge chairs and sofas under the trees for drinks with friends. “To each his or her own groove,” explains Luca Voltarel, partner and manager of Segafredo. “We wanted everyone to find his or her own comfortable spot to relax and enjoy the music.”

Miss Patty, joining DJ Mr. V. on stage, will showcase her unusual vocal talent mixing tribal, free spirit and bohemian styles. Her mantra is to find sounds that speak to her from disco and funk to opera and folk, and inspire her to create her own harmony. “Miss Patty brings together the eclectic crowd we nurture and cherish at Segafredo,” compares Voltarel.

With an expected attendance in the thousands, satellite bars will be strategically set up throughout the enclosed area. Activities and surprises are planned but will not be divulged. For daily updates about the 10th Anniversary, please become a fan on facebook of Segafredo L’Originale or for more information please call 305-673-0047 or visit www.sze-originale.com Servers will request valid identification when serving alcohol.

Nature Reflected
Kari Snyder and Helen M. Webster
August 11 – September 29, 2010
Miami Beach Regional Library
227 22nd St. • 305.535.4219
Reception: Wednesday, August 11, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.

The exhibition and installation feature individual and collaborative artwork by Miami based artists Helen Webster and Kari Snyder. Both share in common a fascination with Florida birds, plants, architecture, and domestic environments. The artists combined Webster’s paintings with Snyder’s printmaking to create a fresh series of works on linen, in addition to their individual work on paper, linen, and wood panel. The theme of the work is the influence nature has on our interior spaces both physically and subconsciously. The delicate influence of the nature around us, the habitat specific to Miami, and the importance of its balance and preservation are what this exhibition brings to light.

Speed Limits To Open At The Wolfsonian–FIU 9/17/10

‘Speed Limits’ To Open At The Wolfsonian–FIU September 17, 2010
Upcoming Exhibition Celebrates The Hundredth Anniversary Of Italian Futurism

The Wolfsonian–Florida International University presents Speed Limits, an exhibition which explores the role of speed in modern life and celebrates the hundredth anniversary of Italian Futurism. In 1909, the “Foundation and Manifesto of Futurism” proclaimed that “the world’s magnificence has been enriched by a new beauty: the beauty of speed.” A century later, as the tempo of life continues to accelerate, Speed Limits asks critical questions about the impact of speed on our daily lives. The exhibition, on view from September 17, 2010 through February 20, 2011, is co-organized by The Wolfsonian and the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) and is curated by Jeffrey T. Schnapp, CCA Mellon senior fellow and professor at Stanford University.

“This exhibition reflects on the legacy of the Futurist movement’s celebration of speed, and moves beyond art and literature into the realms of material culture, the built environment, popular entertainment, and everyday life,” explains Marianne Lamonaca, The Wolfsonian’s associate director for curatorial affairs and education. “It also brings into focus some of the key issues that affect each of us in our daily lives, such as the ubiquity of portable communication devices and the proliferation of nutritionally deficient food.” To inaugurate the show, The Wolfsonian will organize a happening on September 16, 2010, and a formal event celebrating the museum’s fifteenth anniversary on November 11, 2010.

Speed Limits presents more than 200 works from the collections of The Wolfsonian and the CCA and features a variety of media, including posters, books, drawings, clocks, paintings, and video installations. Critical rather than commemorative in spirit, the exhibition explores a single Futurist theme from the standpoint of its contemporary legacies and probes the powers and limits of the modern era’s cult of speed in five key domains: circulation and transit; construction and the built environment; efficiency; the measurement and representation of rapid motion; and the mind/body relationship.

CIRCULATION AND TRANSIT
Multiple perceptions of traffic and its models are vital to an understanding of the city and society. The exhibition bears witness to the prevalent dream of an urban space with freely-flowing traffic, and illustrates the concept of the grid or network that governs the movement not only of objects and goods but also of information. This is juxtaposed with the breakdown of circulation—the traffic jam. The overcrowding of city streets is captured in a series of photographs taken by John Veltri in New York City in 1938 and in the print by Benton Spruance from 1937. Visual records are accompanied by archival documents and studies of transportation efficiency and accident patterns related to increasing speeds.

CONSTRUCTION AND THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT
Architecture is a motive force behind the speeding-up of life, reflected in the increasing efficiency of construction processes. The phenomenon is illustrated through photographic sequences capturing the erection of the Irving Trust Building (New York), the Eiffel Tower (Paris), and Rem Koolhaas’s China Central Television building (Beijing). The fast pace of construction of these and other buildings can be analyzed by studying dated sequential images. Prefabrication served as a major drive towards increasing construction efficiency, and is represented by various trade catalogs of homes and other building types, as well as photographs documenting their assembly.

EFFICIENCY
Examining how notions of efficient production evolved over time, the exhibition focuses on two types of space transformed by speed, one public and the other domestic: the office and the kitchen. Filing systems, processors, and office furniture play a central role making work spaces fast and efficient. A remarkable 1936 project by Josef Ehm features an electrically-powered mechanical classifier, allowing workers of the Central Social Institution in Prague to access large-scale card catalogs via mechanized desks on lifts. The exhibition also includes photographs by Balthazar Korab that capture the modernized workspaces of the 1960s, as well as studies of the productivity of workers and their equipment such as Frank B. Gilbreth’s films of American workers in the 1910s and ‘20s. Photographs of Christine Frederick show her testing and demonstrating kitchen efficiencies in the early 20th century, when electrification, new equipment and appliances, and a redesigned space increase the speed of domestic activities. Alongside commercial artifacts and documentation, the exhibition includes architects’ studies such as drawings by Le Corbusier analyzing kitchen dimensions.

THE MEASUREMENT AND REPRESENTATION OF RAPID MOTION
Addressing the cognitive challenges with which humanity is surrounded, the exhibition features material about information compression through strata of signs, signals and messages, or diagrams that reduce complex traffic data to a usable visual representation. Increasingly, humans are processing complex overlapping of information including time and related data. This growth is reflected in a collection of clocks illustrating the tempo of modern life, and the increasing sophistication and number of instruments and devices that measure motion: accelerometers, altimeters, odometers, speedometers.

Also presented are posters and graphics whose design captures the notion of speed in order to more effectively promote cars, tires, oils, and other products or services built celebrating new levels of speed.

THE MIND/BODY RELATIONSHIP
The exhibition suggests different ways in which acceleration is associated on the one hand with pleasure—ecstasy, the search for powerful sensations, and overstimulation—and on the other with exhaustion, risk, and injury. Representations of the body in motion include the transformation of the body itself into a speeding object, gymnastics and popular athleticism in the early 20th century, the current cult of the body, natural and artificial improvements in physical culture, stimulants and tranquilizers, and the remedies associated with stimulants. Among speed’s pharmaceutical avatars are caffeine, cocaine, amphetamines, and the active ingredients in energy drinks.

The exhibition is accompanied by a publication of the same title, edited by Schnapp and co-published by The Wolfsonian, the CCA, and Skira Editore, Milan. The catalog includes new essays by Timothy Alborn, Yve-Alain Bois, Edward Dimendberg, Maria Gough, Antonino Mastruzzo, Jeffrey L. Meikle, Pierre Niox, Marjorie Perloff, Mark Seltzer, and Anthony Vidler; an anthology of historical texts; the visual essay “Rush City” by Schnapp; and studies of the impact of speed on contemporary society. The 320-page catalog ($39) is available in The Dynamo Museum Shop. To purchase, contact paola@thewolf.fiu.edu or 305.535.2680.

The Wolfsonian thanks the following supporters for making this exhibition possible: James Woolems and Woolems Inc.; Rene Gonzalez Architects; the Funding Arts Network; Continental Airlines, the Official Airline of The Wolfsonian–FIU; The Wolfsonian–FIU Alliance; the Frances L. Wolfson Fund at Dade Community Foundation; and FPL FiberNet, a leading provider of fiber-optic solutions.

The Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) is an international research centre and museum founded in 1979 on the conviction that architecture is a public concern. Based on its extensive collections, the CCA is a leading voice in advancing knowledge, promoting public understanding, and widening thought and debate on the art of architecture and its history, theory, practice and role in society today. Twenty years after opening its doors to the public, the CCA is celebrating its anniversary with an ambitious series of activities presented by Phyllis Lambert, Founding Director and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and Mirko Zardini, CCA Director and Chief Curator. They consist of programs and initiatives that underscore the achievements of the CCA throughout 2009 and are intended to increase its influence and its role as a unique cultural institution. Further information about the CCA is available at http://www.cca.qc.ca/en.

The Wolfsonian is located at 1001 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach, FL. Admission is $7 for adults; $5 for seniors, students, and children age 6 -12; and free for Wolfsonian members, State University System of Florida staff and students with ID, and children under six. The Wolfsonian, presently on a Summer Schedule through September 15, 2010, is open Thursday from noon-6pm; Friday from noon-9m; Saturday and Sunday from noon-6pm; and is closed Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Contact us at 305.531.1001 or visit us online at www.wolfsonian.org for further information.

The Wolfsonian receives ongoing support from The Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners; the City of Miami Beach, Cultural Affairs Program, Cultural Arts Council; the William J. and Tina Rosenberg Foundation; Continental Airlines, the Official Airline of The Wolfsonian–FIU; Bacardi USA, Inc.; and Arrowood Vineyards & Winery.

Smirnoff Ice Summer Concert Series presented by Univision Radio Featuring R.K.M & Ken-Y at Nikki Beach Miami
The Smirnoff Ice Summer Concert Series kicked-off last Friday, August 6, 2010 at Nikki Beach in Miami with dynamic reggaeton duo R.K.M & Ken-Y. The beachside party was an affair for the books, featuring Enrique Santos from Mix 98.3 as the night’s MC, DJ NIKOLAS on the turntables alongside The brpr Group’s resident TJ Manu, and of course R.K.M & Ken-Y fans who earned their way in to the exclusive concert through Univision Radio’s local station giveaways and @SmirnoffMiami Twitter Trivia Contests.

As promised, the first concert of the 2010 series was more than just the musical event of the summer; it was a social media frenzy that satisfied its Twitter, Foursquare, and Stickybits savvy public to the fullest. The brpr Group’s TJ Manu took over Nikki Beach, giving every Tweep on site a chance to share a shout-out on the big screen, while broadcasting Foursquare check-ins and prompting partiers to scan every Smirnoff Ice barcode on site. The night’s social media maestros delighted Stickybits enthusiasts and introduced newbies to the new craze of barcode scanning by temp tattooing concert-goers with the Smirnoff Ice barcode, allowing them to share their R.K.M & Ken-Y experience with other Smirnoff Ice drinkers from across the globe. “This evening was a prime example of how we can take social media offline and bring it, instead, to the front line,” says The brpr Group’s Social Media Curator, Jennifer Batchelor, “we used everything we had at our disposal to take the conversation ‘mobile’ which enabled us to instantly tap in to the crowd’s stream of consciousness, engaging the fans in the moment rather than waiting for the after-thought.”

A first in Miami and new to the media world, Honorary Twitter Press Passes from The brpr Group were awarded to avid @SmirnoffMiami and @thebrprgroup followers as recognition of their outstanding social networking connectivity and continued support of the Twitterverse.

The crew from SocialBuzzTV was at the center of it all as they captured the night’s festivities on film, promising the most vivid recap of a night that will not likely be forgotten. Add this to the USTREAM feed shot right from the DJ/TJ booth and you would not have missed a beat. Additionally, favorite local photographers Marisa Matluck of NBC Miami and Anthony Jordon of The Miami New Times and Soul of Miami were on-site to capture the night’s debauchery with exclusive shots of R.K.M & Ken-Y and their ecstatic fans. The night was a celebration of the Grammy nominated duo’s escalating career as audience members danced to favorites like “Down”, which reached #1 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart, and radio sensations “Te Regalo Amores” and “Me Matas.”

World Erotic Art Museum
1205 Washington Avenue
Miami Beach
www.weam.com

Intriguing and provocative, attacking wars in the Middle East, Africa and other distant countries, the seductively-oriented work of Miami artist Rosemarie Romero will be seen in the premiere of her newest exhibit, “Sexual War Politics,” opening a month long run Monday, August 2 with a reception for the artist from 6-10 P.M. at the World Erotic Art Museum.

In a powerful display of artistic courage, Romero attacks global conflicts through her deconstruction and personal criticism of pop culture and politics which inhabit the lives of those who live in the 21st century. American pornography and fashion shoots are cut, scanned and juxtaposed against war photography from countries in war-torn conflict to incite dialog and reflection on our fragmented times.

“The Roots y El Tiempo” performance, under the direction and choreography of the internationally recognized professor Manolo Micler, will bring to life an energetic and colorful journey through Cuban rhythms – story of Cuba told through breathtaking dance and music.

Founded in 1962, The Conjunto Folklórico Nacional is Cuba’s premier folkloric ensemble, and represents the performance traditions of the entire country, with an emphasis on Cuba’s African-based genres, such as rumba, comparsa, and the performance traditions associated with Afro-Cuban religions – namely, Regla de Ocha, Palo Monte, Arará, Tumba Francesa, and Abakwá. It is an outstanding performance of traditional Afro-Cuban folkloric music, as well as featuring performances by one of the largest assemblage of Cuban folkloric masters ever. It is a classic – both as an incredible aesthetic experience and as a documentation of a time that has passed into history. The Ensemble has always had as its main purpose to contribute to the rescue and recovery of Cuba’s dance and musical roots.

Today, 48 years after its founding, the Ensemble has developed its own unique artistic style. El Conjunto Folklórico Nacional de Cuba has performed more than eight hundred thousand times, through its 93 international tours in Europe, America and Asia, and audiences from more than three hundred cities and towns worldwide have thrilled at their performances, different audiences have acclaimed in numerous languages the traditional songs and dances created by the Cuban people.

Men’s Swimsuit Show Ignited Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim Runway Swell Suits Miami 2011 Debuts All Male Swimwear Group Show By Betty Alvarez

The annual Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week SWIM made a big splash this year in Miami with the much-anticipated debut of Swell Suits Miami 2011 – the first all male swimwear group show to hit the runway. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week SWIM was a “by invitation only” event featuring worldwide top swimwear designers showcasing their collections in two runway venues, the Cabaña Grande and the Oasis, as well as Raleigh’s pool and penthouse.

Swell Suits Miami 2011 features the exclusive Spring/Summer swimwear collections of designers Naila, Olasul and parke & ronen. The show premiered on July 16 at 8 PM at the Oasis in the historic Raleigh Hotel in Miami Beach.

“This marks the launch of menswear getting the much-deserved attention in this all-important show,” said the producers of Swell Suits. “We are so excited to be making fashion history and believe this premiere marks a significant milestone that is greatly welcomed by the fashion community and IMG (the producers of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week SWIM).”

Men’s swimwear has come a long way in the last century. In the 1930s, men were still wearing full-body swimwear designed for modesty. Today, men’s swimwear offers versatile cuts, lengths, color and materials all designed to complement one’s physique.

This year’s featured Swell Suits Miami designers have established a design ethic with focus on detail and use of the finest materials.

Inspired by nature, Naila is oriented toward eco-friendly and innovative materials. Naila will be launching the first ever made recyclable and environmentally friendly men trunk short. Exclusively handmade in Italy, each piece in the collection features refined details, sleek silhouettes and European cuts in vibrant colorful palettes. Additional to the men line, Naila also carries an uber-chic women line and miniature version of daddy’s bathing suit.

Peruvian-born designer Lorenz Korder’s Olasul swimwear collection celebrates the unique Peruvian surf culture. Made from the highest quick-drying materials, the Olasul collection has been described as “chicly understated” with bold, funky colors. “Each piece tells a story and harkens back to a time and place where surfing was a gentleman’s sport,” Korder said.

parke & ronen – an exclusively all-male swimwear line – has grown to be a pioneer in the men’s swimwear world and a leader in the industry since 1997. The company has created a name for itself by reinventing the 50’s style men’s swim short with the creation of its signature Snap! Short. The company offers a range of styles, from knee-grazing board shorts to sexy briefs.

Randolph Engineering, as a sponsor of Swell Suits Miami will accessorize the models with their sleek lines of handcrafted premium sunglasses and shooting eyewear. Dee & Co. Hair Studio will work the backstage doing hair and makeup; owner of Dee & Co. Hair Studio and celebrity hair stylist, Dee Adames is also the winner of Bravo’s TV hit “Shear Genius” season 2.

The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari (1920, Germany, Robert Wiene, 72 minutes, b&w, DVD)—In this silent 1920s masterpiece, an insane asylum inmate explains to his psychiatrist how he came to the institution, telling the shrink the story of the evil hypnotist Caligari and his unwitting pawn, the sleepwalker Cesare. This stark expressionist film from German director Robert Wiene astonishes with the power of its sets and visuals, and the creepy plot easily raises hackles on the back of one’s neck. The Dynamo Café will offer 2-for-1 beer and wine from 6-9pm on Dyno’Nites, specially designed as a venue for the local community to present their talent and knowledge. What if you woke up one summer day and discovered that the tables had been turned – that you had shrunk to the size of an ant, and towering above you were a giant spider, an enormous praying mantis, and a huge, snapping Venus flytrap? No, it is not another sequel to “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.”

It is the Florida premiere of Sarruga, Barcelona’s famed street theater group. Spectacular giant insects will cavort in an indoor show filled with music, lights and movement. The City of Miami Beach’s acclaimed Arts in the Parks series moves into the Miami Beach Convention Center for Sarruga’s spectacular “Insects.” This unique, not-to-be-missed entertainment will be held July 22 – 25 in Hall B. The family event is free.

“We’re so excited,” said Max Sklar, Miami Beach’s director of Tourism and Cultural Development. “We had hoped to bring Sarruga for the first Sleepless Night. When we heard they were coming to perform in Chicago’s Millennium Park this summer, we jumped on the chance to present them to the people of South Florida.”

“Insects” is made possible by the City of Miami Beach Department of Tourism and Cultural Development and Arts in the Parks, with Centro Cultural Español, the Bass Museum of Art, and the Catalina Hotel and Beach Club.
