Some people DJ, others make beats. Heads everywhere spit lyrics—either off the dome or noted, and many are even recognized as true MC’s who actually manage to rock a crowd here & there. Bicycling Magazine’s Biketown USA program brings Free Bikes to Miami 8/25/09
What do you want to change about your life? Do you wish you were in better health? Wish you were more connected to your community? Do you wish you could save money on gas?
Bicycling magazine and MetLife have the solution: Start riding a bike. In its seventh year, Bicycling’s BikeTown USA, presented by MetLife, is giving away 30 bikes to Miami residents. People interested in changing their daily lives will have the opportunity to see how a bike can improve life for themselves, their families, and even their communities.
“In our seventh year of BikeTown USA, we wanted to refocus the program on neighborhoods, where people spend time with their family and friends,†said Loren Mooney, editor-in-chief of Bicycling. “A bike becomes the ultimate neighborhood multi-tasking tool – you can connect with your community, improve your health and travel to the local coffee shop all by riding a bike.â€
Anyone interested in receiving a new bike simply needs to tell Bicycling, in 50 words or less, how having a Jamis Communter 1 or Citizen 1 bike would help make a change in his or her life. Bicycling’s editors will select what they feel are the 30 best essays and the selected writers will each receive a bike to keep.
Bicycling tracks participants’ progress for three months, with results featured in the magazine and on Bicycling.com. Previous stories have been astonishing – thousands of pounds have been lost, blood pressure and diabetes medications dropped, marriages saved, impromptu bike clubs started, and countless bike commuter miles logged to save money on gas and help the environment. In essence, thousands of people enjoy their lives more because they spend more time on a bike.
“On behalf of MetLife, we are proud to sponsor this year’s BikeTown USA to help bring bicycling to people across the United States and in Miami this month,†said Michael J. Vietri, executive vice president, Individual Distribution, MetLife. “As a company, we have a long-standing history of community involvement and are particularly focused on people’s health and well being. Through bicycling, our clients and their friends and families have an outlet to relieve stress, improve their health and have fun.â€
Participant entries are being accepted at www.bicycling.com/biketown until August 21st. The BikeTown event will be happen at Bayfront Park on Thursday, August 27, 2009 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. All selected participants will receive a new Jamis Commuter 1 or Citizen 1 bike, a helmet from Lazer and a lock from OnGuard.
“Jamis is proud to join the team as the Official Bike of BikeTown 2009,” said Carine Joannou, President of Jamis Bicycles. “We’ve been building bikes for 30 years and know firsthand how cycling can change lives. We are really looking forward to helping BikeTown participants achieve their goals.”

PULSE Miami New Location at The Ice Palace 12/3-6/09

PULSE Miami Announces Relocation to The Ice Palace for its Fifth Edition
Helen Allen, Director of PULSE Contemporary Art Fair announced today that PULSE Miami is taking over The Ice Palace in downtown Miami. The large venue offers PULSE a more dynamic space for the exhibition of art and is conveniently located within minutes of the Venetian and MacArthur Causeways to Miami Beach. The layout in the former ice factory, built in the early 1920’s, will be designed to utilize the vast outdoor area to enhance visitors’ experience and additional cultural programming. In just five years, PULSE Miami has grown into a major international exhibition, which has frequently been hailed as the most significant art fair in Miami after Art Basel Miami Beach.
“We are thrilled to be moving to The Ice Palace”, said Helen Allen. “We are planning to work on the space to maximize its full potential by implementing a series of improvements such as the layout, lighting, and wider aisles. The caliber of exhibitors we are bringing will undoubtedly allow us to produce an incredible fair. We are also pleased to remain the anchor of the Miami/Wynwood area”.
The Ice Palace Film Studios, typically referred to as The Ice Palace, is a former ice factory centrally located in Miami’s Media and Entertainment District. It stands at the heart of the new cultural center, neighboring the Miami Art Museum, CIFO, the Symphony Theatre and The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami Dade County. Boasting over 145,000 square feet, Art Deco architecture and verdant lawns, it will constitute an exceptional and easily accessible setting for PULSE Miami.
PULSE Miami 2009 will feature over 75 exhibitors in its main section, with an additional 10 galleries in its IMPULSE section. The Fair will also present its signature programs: the installations and large-scale sculpture program, PULSE Performance, PULSE Play>, and, on Saturday, December 5, 2009, it will award the PULSE Prize in honor of Adriaan Van der Have of TORCH GALLERY who passed away this spring.
The VIP Private Preview Brunch will be held on Thursday, December 3, at The Ice Palace from 10am to 1pm.
Opening Hours:
Thursday, December 3: 1pm – 8pm
Friday, December 4: 10am – 7pm
Saturday, December 5: 10am – 7pm
Sunday, December 6: 10am – 7pm
Location: The Ice Palace- 1400 North Miami Avenue, Miami, FL 33136
About PULSE Contemporary Art Fair:
PULSE Contemporary Art Fair is the leading US art fair dedicated solely to contemporary art. Held annually in New York and Miami, PULSE bridges the gap between main and alternative fairs and provides participating galleries with a platform to present new works to a strong and growing audience of collectors, art professionals and art lovers.
The Fair is divided into two sections and is comprised of a mix of established and emerging galleries vetted by a committee of prominent international dealers. The IMPULSE section presents galleries invited by the Committee to present solo exhibitions of artist’s work created in the past two years.
The Miami debut of PULSE Performance will feature daily performances and concerts by young emerging artists such as Maria Jose Arjona, who was recently invited to be part of a workshop with Marina Abramovic, and whose daily performances will be among the highlights of the new programming. Notable musical talents in the outdoor concert and performance series include The Vivian Girls, The Blow, and Exene Cervenka.
Additionally, PULSE will present its signature program of large-scale sculptures and installations throughout the fair’s exhibition halls and lawn, as well as the PULSE Play> video lounge curated by João Ribas, Curator of Exhibitions at the MIT List Visual Arts Center, Cambridge, MA. Danny Baskin and Andy Schrock, featured in PULSE PRESENTS at ACADEMY 2009 hosted by Conner Contemporary Art, have also each been awarded space to present new projects at the fair.
Each year, one artist featured in IMPULSE, the section of the fair dedicated to solo artist presentations, is awarded a $2,500 cash prize. This year’s PULSE Prize will be awarded in honor of Adriaan van der Have, Founder and Director of Torch Gallery, who was an inspiring force in the art world for his dedication to the promotion of emerging artists. The winner will be announced Friday, December 4, 2009 during the PULSE Party at PLUNGE at the Gansevoort South.

The Missing Peace At The Frost Opens 10/9/09

Frost Art Museum presents The Missing Peace: Artists Consider the Dalai Lama
The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University presents the opening of The Missing Peace: Artists Consider the Dalai Lama. The exhibition, a result of the collaboration between the Committee of 100 for Tibet and the Dalai Lama Foundation focuses and explores art as a medium for peace inspiring readers in pursuing peace in their lives, both personally and in their communities. The exhibition opens on Friday, October 9, 2009 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
Over 40 pieces of art from collections done by different artists who have created their own interpretations and answers concerning the 14th Dalai Lama will be on display throughout The Museum. The artists were asked to create portrayals of the Dalai Lama, and as a result a collection of tapestries, photographs, and paintings were created with multiple images, themes, and media that mirrors the many roles the Dalai Lama plays within the world. The title of the exhibition, The Missing Peace: Artists Consider the Dalai Lama, is a play on words, showing that peace will always be missing in our world. The Dalai Lama consistently shows that dedicating oneself to peace is anything but pointless. The purpose of this exhibition is not to focus just on the work of the individual artists, but upon peace. The works inspired by the Dalai Lama seek to inspire other to have love and patience, and generate compassion.
The artists were asked to create portrayals of the Dalai Lama, and as a result a collection of tapestries, photographs, and paintings were created with multiple images, themes, and media that mirrors the many roles the Dalai Lama plays within the world. The artists not only explore the Dalai Lama himself, but also discover and explore other multiple features of the leader. The exhibition includes work by Chuck Close, Laurie Anderson, Bill Viola, Jenny Holzer, Anish Kapoor, Richard Gere, Marina Abramovic, and Michele Oka Doner, among others. Each of these artists has a unique set of ideas and that will inspire, engage, and educate the viewers. The Dalai Lama is a global spiritual leader, temporal leader, and a Buddhist who has demonstrated a path to peace. The exhibition is going to broaden the appreciation for the Dalai Lama and all the principles and qualities he embodies. The Missing Peace is funded in part by Funding Arts Network and The Charles Wei-Hsun Fu Foundation.

TGIF Everyone!
As you probably know, we have our next big event, Earth Is Art, coming up in just a week on August 22nd! We have a really nice show coming together for you with several south Florida artists, music, food, drinks, performances, and a lot of fun.
You know that Life Is Art is a non-profit, but we still have operating expenses. We put a lot of effort into following our mission of promoting and supporting the south Florida arts community. The response has been incredible, and everyone seems to agree that we are providing needed services.
To help us raise revenue to do more for the community, we are holding an auction and sale at this event. We are asking local businesses and arts lovers to sponsor an item or service for the auction. In addition to supporting the arts, you will receive some nice promotion in exchange. We always work to provide value for the community and all our supporters. We will list your name on the website, in email, on Facebook, and during the event. It is an inexpensive way to get your name in front of potential new customers.
If you are interested in participating, please contact us right away at art@lifeisartfest.org and we will get you all of the information. If you know of any business that might be interested, please pass this message along to them. Thank you very much!

Roger Sanchez Presents Release Yourself at Mansion 9/5/09

Roger Sanchez

music by ROGER SANCHEZ
along with CHICCO SECCI

Roger Sanchez has always operated several miles ahead of his dance music colleagues. Sanchez’s front-running position in the club community comes from an innate talent and taste for creative exploration.
From the beginning of his career, he has consistently strived to redefine the boundaries of underground house music, beginning in 1990 under the moniker Underground Solution with the single “Luv Dancin.” With that now classic single, Sanchez proved that the texture of a thick syncopated baseline, and a simple but contagious melody, could rise above the confines of a small venue into mainstream consciousness and on to crossover radio airwaves. The track was eventually re-recorded with the haughty and seductive delivery of newcomer Jasmine, further expanding its already ardent international audience and providing a glimpse into Sanchez’s creative grasp.
“I’ll never forget hearing, that record played in a club for the first time,” says Sanchez. “Watching people react to it was a revelation. I knew this record was different from anything l had worked on and it was just the beginning.” From that point he rose to the top of the major label remix league, adding his magic touch to a broad selection of today’s greatest artists. One of those would again change the course of career travel for Sanchez; “‘Take Me Back To Love Again’ by Kathy Sledge was one of the first records that I had to really show people that I could handle something with real depth,” he says of the song that he transformed from a sultry R & B ditty into a full throttle, gospel-spiced mover. “It wasn’t just a case of re-cutting the keyboards and beat. l went back into the studio with Kathy, and she re-sang the song. It was pure chemistry. We connected and really respected one another and that brought out the best we had to offer.” A worldwide No. 1 smash, “Take Me Back To Love Again” led to post-production of Sledge’s next single “Heart.”
Along the way, Sanchez further developed his unique and highly musical image within clubland with a foray into the world of independent label ownership. In 1992, he formed One Records, an outlet that earned a sole reputation for it’s cutting edge releases by Sanchez and a host of other underground luminaries. Last year came Narcotic Records. Among it’s early releases was “Another Star” which proved to be a massive vocal club anthem on which he teamed up with Kathy Sledge once again. Narcotic has emerged as a label that can deliver eclectic club tracks from the likes of Ashley Beedle, Deep Dish and DJ Disciple.
The hardcore of Sanchez’s tenure in dance music is an ongoing passion for stepping behind the turntables. “To me, spinning records can be just as creative as producing and remixing,” he says. “A great DJ can take a record and give it an entirely new sound or vibe, by the way they deal with the beats or chord progressions.” Sanchez still spins regularly, serving the longtime disciples of his hallowed ‘Ego Trip’ travelling parties, which were the talk of New York and Europe.
“DJ-ing is part of what draws me into making music,” says the New York native, who divided his early 20’s between seasoning his musical aptitude and studying architecture at the Pratt Institute. “For a while I tried to do both, but what can I say, music was what touched me more deeply. I had to give it a shot.”
Needless to say, Sanchez made the right decision. In addtion to a full slate of production, writing and remix chores, 1997 will see the birth of Narcosis Records which will be an outlet for more experimental music including Drum ‘n Bass and Hip Hop. Both Narcotic and Narcosis will continue the Sanchez philosophy of nurturing new talent and providing inspirational dance music.

About:
Educate Tomorrow, Corp. is an international, nonprofit, certified 501(c)(3) organization. All over the world, poverty denies children, as well as adults, the promises of a better tomorrow. Forgotten by society and social welfare programs, children born into poverty are trapped in a cruel and often violent cycle that frequently continues for generations. Lacking the inspiration, confidence, knowledge, and means to change, entire families are lost to the cycle of hopelessness.
Educate Tomorrow believes that the best way to end the cycle of poverty is through education. Our mission is to make education an attainable goal for the most disadvantaged in our world, so that all may be afforded the possibilities that can be achieved through learning. We strive to reach out to these individuals and provide them inspiration, guidance, and support and lead them on the path of life-long learning.
Educate Tomorrow’s primary mission in the US is to provide one-on-one educational mentors to foster care children that are turning 18 and “aging out” of the system. Since its founding in 2003, Educate Tomorrow has successfully implemented its mentoring programs, education programs and life skills camps across the nation. Additionally, it has reached internationally by continuing to support the work of it’s founders who established one of the first local language primary schools, adult literacy programs and boarding schools in the remote and impoverished village of Kabey Fo in Niger, West Africa.

Musical Missionary presents Dance for a Cause with Chris Fortier, Stryke, Sebastian at Electric Pickle 8/14/09
{Musical Missionary is a good friend of Soul Of Miami. Highly Recommended.}

Musical Missionary proudly presents DANCE FOR A CAUSE
… to appreciate and benefit the SoBe Institute of the Arts
… and bring the gift of music to underprivileged children
featuring…
CHRIS FORTIER
STRYKE
SEBASTIAN
Friday, August 14, 2009 at 11:00pm
The Electric Pickle
2826 N. Miami Ave.
Miami, FL
This is it… Musical Missionary is very excited to host its first fundraising event on Friday, August 14th, at The Electric Pickle. Proceeds from the event will go towards scholarships at the SoBe Arts Institute. Giving the gift of music to underprivileged children is a cause that perfectly aligns with MM’s mission, so I hope to see many of you there to Dance For A Cause!
Another fitting feature of this party is the talent lineup. Few names are tied to electronic dance music’s past, present, and future like Chris Fortier. Honing his skills over the last two decades with highlights such as a Balance Series compilation and founding credits for the Balance Record Pool, Fortier has always been on the leading edge of dance music. Musical Missionary is extremely proud to call Chris family and to have him be a part of this special event.
But this is not your typical one-headliner party. Stryke and Sebastian are local dance music masters who remind me of how lucky I am to live in Miami. Stryke spends most of his time on the road so having him join this party is an extra special treat. And Sebastian… he’s been a Musical Missionary favorite since MM started throwing parties, so this lineup couldn’t be more fitting for this occasion.

Fun in the Park: Helping the Children of Honduras 8/15/09

From Yelp
Kennedy Park in Coconut Grove
2400 S Bayshore Dr
Miami, FL 33133
Building A Future (BAF) is hosting a fundraiser and donating all proceeds to eight family support centers in Honduras. These facilities provide approximately 1,000 at-risk children with daily meals, supplementary education, and a place to stay when they have nowhere else to go.
Due to the tense political situation of the past months, the centers in Honduras have not received the subsidies necessary to carry out its activities in favor of the most impoverished of children. Without this help, these support centers will be forced to drastically reduce or cease operations.
BAF supporters in Miami will be hosting the event “Fun in the Park–Helping the Children of Honduras” at Kennedy Park on August 15, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
The event will be a fun-filled and family -friendly day with something to do for everyone while promoting a great cause.
Activities in the event will include: Yoga, Soccer, Volleyball, Football. Water balloons & bounce house for kids!
There will also be cupcakes, cookies, gatorade, ice cream, hot dogs, and snow cones for sale.
There will be a $5 fee to participate in the day’s activities.

The gallery’s office hours are Monday through Friday by previous appointment. Prior notice will be given by the Gallery for other scheduled

Frost Art Museum Target Wednesday After Hours Opening of Geoffrey Olsen 9/2/09
he Frost Art Museum Presents Target Wednesday After Hours
Opening exhibition of Geoffrey Olsen’s work, CCE Poets’ Room. Teorema opening and a performance by Isadora Duncan Dance Ensemble
The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University presents an evening celebrating the opening of Geoffrey Olsen’s show Miami Paintings along with a performance by the Isadora Duncan dance ensemble and the opening of Poet’s Room. Teorema in the first Target Wednesday After Hours event this fall. This event will take place on Wednesday, September 2, 2009 from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
Geoffrey Olsen was the director of graduate studies at Florida International University. Born in Merthyr Tydfil, Geoffrey Olsen studied art at Bristol, Newport, Cardiff and the Academy of Fine Art in Munich and to this day is one of the most original painters to come from the Welsh Valleys. Olsen’s artwork was inspired by the natural landscapes and traditions of his homeland. His paintings are characterized by a bold, free-flowing use of oil paint in layers, and he develops themes based on the native forms of his hometown and on the light and environment of Miami, where he spent his last years. His show will feature all the paintings he created while living in Miami.
Poet’s Room. Teorema exhibition is a result of the partnership of Centro Cultural Español de Miami, Govern de les illes Balears and Institut Ramon, Spain. In 1305, the Balearic philosopher Ramon Llull introduced the concept of a logic machine in his work Ars generalis ultima. This tool was influential when first conceived in the middle ages, and is still relevant today. The exhibition will include work by Spanish artist Horacio Sapere, a documentary series, and a round table discussion by scholars on the philosopher’s work.
This event will also feature a performance by the Isadora Duncan Ensemble, which was founded by FIU Professor of Dance, Andrea Montell Seidel in 1992. This is the fifth generation to bring about Isadora’s legacy of solo and group dances. The company has performed at the Internationales Tanzfestival Nordrhein-Westfalen in Germany, the Goethe Festival in St. Petersburg, Russia; New York Lincoln Center Festival Out-of-Doors, the Kennedy Center in Washington, and at major festivals throughout Latin America. The Frost Museum lecture/performance will feature solos and duets from Isadora’s original repertory, 1905-1923 performed by Ensemble members and will include a brief discussion and audience question and answer session related to Isadora’s art and legacy.
About the Frost Art Museum – Florida International University
Over 17,000 visitors have come to The Frost Art Museum since its opening in November 2008. The Frost is an AAM accredited museum and Smithsonian affiliate. The Museum is located at 10975 SW 17th St. across from the Blue garage and adjacent to the Wertheim Performing Arts Center on the University Park campus. Cocktails at the Angel Hands for ALS Launch event at River Lounge located inside the Epic Hotel 8/6/09

ANGEL HANDS FOR ALS LAUNCHES IN SOUTH FLORIDA WITH FABULOUS EVENT AT RIVER LOUNGE
Please log onto: http://www.angelhandsforals.org for more information. RSVP AND CONFIRMATION REQUIRED TO ATTEND.
Angel Hands for ALS, a nonprofit foundation started in July 2007 in the state of North Carolina as a limited liability corporation is launching a South Florida Chapter now as Non Profit Foundation with Public Charity Status. The launch will take place with bites by Om Garden and a Chivas and Prairie Vodka cocktail reception on August 6th 2009 from 7-10pm. The event will take place at River Lounge located at 270 Biscayne Boulevard Way, Miami, FL 33131, inside the Epic Hotel.
Spearheaded by Donald Koenig, a Veteran of the US Navy and Carmen Morales-Koenig, (his wife & his care giver) the duo has used their private funds to service and assist other patients with ALS and their families with medical equipment and support. During the last two years they have traveled in their “DonKMobile†to several cities and states through the East Coast sharing a word of faith and describing the benefits of life after a ventilator. The couple has traveled the map trying to educate and mentor. Morales, a registered nurse by profession, is active in various national organizations for the disease to include ALS TDI Foundation and National ALS association.
Koenig and Morales have been invited to symposiums, gatherings and social functions to speak and share their testimony. They have attended and also spoken at several PALS (Patients with ALS) associations in different cities across US, the last being in Melbourne, Florida April 2009. At said event, they spoke to six other patients and their families. All showing great interest in attending the “Angels Hands for ALS Boot Camps,†to further learn how to care of their family members and provide them a better quality of life.
Within a short time this amazing, passionate twosome has created such a positive impact in the ALS Community that on April 20th 2009, they decided to commence a national launch. They chose Miami as the launch pad, deeming it such a dynamic and incredible market. Once the choice was made, they carefully enlisted Esperanza Franky, a local active professional in the South Florida to be the Legal Representative of the national 501©3 nonprofit, “Angel Hands for ALS, Foundation Inc.†With a main focus to help many more PALS and their families, the foundation will aid many with the help of Governments Grants and Private Fundraising.
Franky, has close to a decade of experience in the finance/banking industry and has made several TV appearances working with other non profits such as Organización C.A.S.A., leading their “Projecto Vivienda.†Now, as CEO of Angel Hands, she will collaborate with many of her longtime contacts to help the cause. When asked about her mission with the organization she simply states: “I have very high goals and high-hopes for [this] Foundation. In unison we will endeavor to help as many low-income patients who suffer from ALS; by teaching and training their care givers an efficient way to take care of them & for patients of ALS to feel an active part of their families and of society.â€
Hosted by WSVN Deco Drive reporter and “On the Flip Side†host Aubrey Aquino, Univision’s Karol Rosa, the launch event for Angel Hands for ALS with feature a cocktail reception, giveaways, and promotional partners to include: Om Garden, Chivas Regal, Next Miami Magazine, Miami Empresarial Magazine, InterContinental Miami, IT Design, Cakes in the City, Prairie Vodka (courtesy of AMC Liaisons), Camelot Salon & Spa, Ramsey & Jade Couture, Live Colors Media, The Homestead Miami Speedway, and 880TheBiz. At the reception, guests will have the opportunity to support the cause by making donations (via check or credit cards).
Present at the event will be Ashok Verma, M.D., D.M. Professor, Medical Director, Kessenich Family MDA-ALS Center and MDA Clinics, Attending Neurologist and Neuro-HIV Clinic Director, Jackson Memorial Hospital.
ANGEL HANDS FOR ALS MISSION STATEMENT:
Angel Hands for ALS strives to promote awareness and provide education on how to improve the quality of life for patients suffering Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.
ABOUT ALS
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease,” is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed.
A-amyotrophic-tropic comes from the Greek language. “A” means no or negative. “Myo” refers to muscle, and “Trophic” means nourishment–”No muscle nourishment.” When a muscle has no nourishment, it “atrophies” or wastes away. “Lateral” identifies the areas in a person’s spinal cord where portions of the nerve cells that signal and control the muscles are located. As this area degenerates, it leads to scarring or hardening (“sclerosis”) in the region.
As motor neurons degenerate, they can no longer send impulses to the muscle fibbers that normally result in muscle movement. Early symptoms of ALS often include increasing muscle weakness, especially involving the arms and legs, speech, swallowing or breathing. When muscles no longer receive the messages from the motor neurons that they require to function, the muscles begin to atrophy (become smaller). Limbs begin to look “thinner” as muscle tissue atrophies.
For additional information on Angel Hands for ALS, please contact: Creativas Group (305) 968-2384 and via email at: info@creativasgroup.com for media coverage, and interviews. Angel Hands for ALS can be “followed†on Face Book. Please log onto:

There’s a $5 donation at the door and 100% of proceeds go toward giving the kids a creative outlet. If you can’t make it out Wednesday, if you like you can send $5 via paypal to info@sweatrecordsmiami.com and we’ll put it toward the cause!

In attendance will be Adolfo Henriques, Chairman of the Miami-Dade County Cultural Affairs Council; Michael Spring, Director of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Dennis Moss, Chairman of the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners. Interested in learning more about how to get public art commissions?
Miami-Dade Art in Public Places program implements site-specific art installations in civic areas at various sites throughout Miami, including Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, fire and police stations, Port of Miami, libraries, parks, Miami International Airport, public housing developments, Metrorail and Metromover stations, and community health centers. These collaborative, innovative projects involve the thinking of artists, architects, engineers, historians, and landscape architects.
Brandi Reddick, Artists and Communications Manager for Art in Public Places, coordinates the program’s management of artists and communications, from advisory committee and artist orientation meetings to project publicity and publications. Please join LegalArt as Brandi discusses the highlights of the Miami-Dade Art in Public Places Collection, the Call to Artists Process, and an overview of upcoming opportunities for artists, including the new Miami Marlins Stadium, which will generate $5.5 million in public art commissions. Following the presentation Brandi will answer questions. Stick around to meet other artists and community leaders–SeminArts are great networking opportunities!

New Hot Series in Miami Beach Puts Musicians Back to Work 8/16,23/09

Hot New Vintage Soul Series Opens At The Van Dyke Cafe August 16 and At The News Lounge August 23rd Puts Artists Back to Work
The upstairs lounge in The Van Dyke Café is very unassuming. In fact, if it wasn’t for the video stream downstairs, you might not even know about the mystical experiences happening right above the common area. But for those “in the knowâ€, it’s the ultimate in true raw traditional musical talent where artists unleash and audiences get a glimpse of an exclusive rare treat of talent available for the taking.
Upstairs at The Van Dyke Café on South Beach, a new series called “Vintage Soulâ€, co-produced by harmonica player, Randy Singer, keeps the music scene rocking and rolling with an exceptional grouping of local artists banning together to create and play music to a captive and appreciative audience. The interactive series features live music ranging from R&B and neo soul to jazz, blues, reggae, funk and gospel, spanning four generations of music including classics from Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Bob Marley, Chaka Khan, Sade, Alicia Keys, among many others. Due to the initial success and unprecedented response of the special performance held earlier this month, The Van Dyke Café located at 846 Lincoln Road in Miami Beach, rated the “Best Jazz Club†by Miami New Times, will host the series on a regular basis once a month until December, beginning Sunday, August 16, 9pm-1am. Sister café The News Lounge located on 5580 NE 4th Court in The Courtyard at 55th Street Station in Miami will also host the series starting August 23. As a new age outdoor garden lounge this setting acts as the perfect backdrop to the new series.
Co-producer of Vintage Soul, Natasha Haynes of PhoenixStar Entertainment comments on the purpose of the series and the state of the music industry today. She says, “The Vintage Soul series was created not only to pay tribute to classic soul music of yesterday and today, but to also give undiscovered artists and talented vocalists a moment in the spotlight. Major record labels have cut back on promoting new artists and traditional ways of promotion are simply not available anymore. Those with true talent have to self-promote and use whatever tools they have available to reach the audience that values their quality. So whether they are singing a classic soul cover song or one of their original songs, Vintage Soul, gives artists a platform of exposure so that they can market themselves and showcase their talent.”
Haynes enjoys working with singer, songwriter, and musician Randy Singer who, she says, helps find work for musicians. “Randy makes sure artists are seen and appreciated. He provides bookings, enthusiasm, and the tools they need to continue their work in an atmosphere that induces creativity and cohesiveness.†Singer is based in Miami and books talent all over the tri county area in addition to booking all the nightly entertainment at The Van Dyke Café and The News Lounge through his company Randy Singer Music. He himself has played all over the world with such greats as Franco da Vita, Toots Thielemans, Caetano Veloso, Juan Luis Guerra, Timbaland and Julio Iglesias in such places as Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Paris, Czech Republic, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Germany, Amsterdam, Mexico, New York, and Nashville.
With music by The Derek Mac Band backing some of South Florida’s local artists, this series is already a hit and the best kept secret. With limited space and no cover, it’s best to get there early. For more information or if you’re interested in playing for the series, email phoenixstarmusic@aol.com with your photos, web-links, mp3 files and whatever else you think earns you some stage time or visit http://www.thevandykecafe.com/vintagesoul.

Manny Prieres – Solo Exhibition: What We Do Is Secret At Spinello Gallery 8/29/09

MANNY PRIERES, “MENDED” (DETAIL), 52.5″ x 36.75″, GRAPHITE AND WATERCOLOR ON PAPER, 2009
SPINELLO GALLERY / DESIGN DISTRICT: 155 NE 38 ST, No. 101, Miami, FL – 33137
SOLO EXHIBITION: Manny Prieres / “What We Do Is Secret.”
OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday, August 29th, 7-10pm
Spinello Gallery (155 NE 38 St., No. 101, Miami Florida – 33137) is proud to present the much-anticipated solo exhibition by one of Miami’s original stars, Manny Prieres, “What We Do Is Secret.” The Cuban-American artist will feature a suite of haunting graphite and watercolor works on paper and sculpture . This will be Prieres’ debut exhibition with the gallery.
Prieres explains, “Every collision leaves a trace behind: debris, a trail of residue that marks the site where violence took place.” The work of Manny Prieres is that sort of remnant, the product of the clash between a traditional, temperamental heritage, and an intense, idiosyncratic counterculture. During the process of this convergence, a series of artifacts are created. They stand at the threshold of a new folklore: they are the iconography of a new tradition.
In this sense, Manny Prieres is an archaeologist, one that has painstakingly and lovingly preserved the objects of an unexplored civilization: their symbols, their gods, their rituals, and their lore. These artifacts bring up tales from the artist’s personal history, yet as a whole they create new narratives that, despite having hybrid elements from multiple sources of influence, are nevertheless moving towards an entirely different place.
Manny Prieres has been an active member of the Miami art scene for over ten years. From 1997-2004, Prieres ran one of Miami’s first influental alternative art spaces, BOX, alongside Jose Reyes and Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova. BOX played a crucial role in the development of the Miami art community.
Exhibition through September 26th, 2009.

Photographs & Review – Bancroft Supperclub
Well, the other night we checked out the new Bancroft and wow!
I shot out a Twitter and said the waitstaff was embarrassingly good. You know, that kind where they are just so over-the-top it makes you feel kind of funny. They even had a silverware guy! Our waiter was awesome, funny, informative and appropriately attentive. And, I am told, quite cute. It’s the kind of service everyone complains about not getting in South Beach. The drinks were kept replenished, the table was kept clean, and anytime we needed anything, someone was there to take care of it.
I had the squid ink noodle pasta with shrimp, squid and scallops. One of my companions had the red snapper and the other had Italian sea bass. All of them were excellent, but I would say the snapper won. I’m not sure how to describe the food, inventive world fusion, I guess. The flavors were interesting and very well put together.
The prices for the entrees range from $23 to $49 and they had a decent variety, fish, chicken, duck, and steak, as well as a couple vegetarian choices. The portions are reasonable, too. Often, you go to these higher class restaurants and the food is really fru-fru and minimal. Not so here. I could not even finish my entrée.
They bill it as a supperclub, so be aware that it starts to get loud around 10pm. But, the atmosphere is nice, a little snooty, but not too much so. If you are looking for a nice restaurant that offers reasonable value for the prices and excellent service, definitely check out Bancroft.

Broadway Actors camp performances at Art and Culture Center of Hollywood 7/24-25/09
Come check out two musical theater shows being performed this weeked by members of our Broadway Actors and Broadway Actors Advanced summer camps:

Cinderella and Rockerfella
Broadway Actors
Friday, July 24, 2009, 5 pm
Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center, US-1 and Monroe Street
A modern, panto-style reworking of the classic tale, including all the traditional characters: downtrodden Cinderella, Rockerfella (formerly known as Prince Charming!), Buttons, the Ugly Sisters, and the Fairy Godmother, with a selection of additional characters, from music managers and paparazzi, to good and bad fairies – all placed in a world of fame and celebrity.
With fresh and relevant things to say about fame, fortune and how true love will win in the end, it has a wonderfully comical script, fabulous songs and plenty of opportunity for audience participation.

Thoroughly Modern Millie
Broadway Actors Advanced
Saturday, July 25, 2009, 2 pm
Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center, US-1 and Monroe Street
Taking place in New York City in 1922, Thoroughly Modern Millie tells the story of young Millie Dillmount, who has just moved to the city in search of a new life for herself. It’s a New York full of intrigue and jazz – a time when women were entering the workforce and the rules of love and social behavior were changing forever.
Based on the popular movie, the stage version of Thoroughly Modern Millie includes a full score of new songs and bright dance numbers. Filled with frisky flappers, dashing leading men and a dragon-lady of a villainess audiences will love to hate, Thoroughly Modern Millie is a perfectly constructed evening of madcap merriment.
Tickets are $7 for adults and $4 for children under 12-years-old. Tickets can be purchased at the box office 1 hour prior to the show. Performances take place at Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center, US-1 and Monroe Street (1770 Monroe Street). Cick here for more information.
Limited slots are still open in the remaining sessions of Summer Camp, including Broadway Actors, Young Artists Advanced, and Young Artists/Young Actors. Click here for more information.

The Terrace Afterhours Presents Misstress Barbara 7/25/09

Continuing their dedication to cutting-edge sounds, the Techno Loft crew at Space Miami brings another femme fatale of the techno and house scene to the decks this Saturday, July 25th, the legendary Misstress Barbara.
Sicilian-born Misstress (yes, there’s four “s” in there…) Barbara, having emigrated to Montréal at an early age, appropriately started her music career as a drummer at the age of 12. Soon after, trading in her sticks for a pair of 1200s and a mixer, she carried her affinity for percussive sounds over into her DJing, delivering a rhythmic, relentless, and uncompromising style in her sets and in her productions. With hits like “I’m Running”, and “Dance Me To…” tearing up the global dance charts and finding their way into the laptops and CD cases of fellow DJs and producers around the world, Barbara, long an underground favorite, is breaking through into the mainstream of dance culture.
With her appearance this weekend at the home of dance music in the United States, Space, the sky’s the limit for the Misstress…

ECOMB presents Raise the Bar fundraiser at Waxy O’Connor’s with Ritchie & Rivenbark, The Rockadictos, The Dizzy Bird 7/27/09

The Environmental Coalition of Miami and the Beaches (ECOMB) started an amazing project called “Raise the Bar.” ECOMB is trying to get all the bars in Miami Beach to recycle. A student from UM got a grant from Hands on Miami, and started with four pilot bars already.
ECOMB is fundraising at every one of those bars, and this month is Waxy O’Connor’s. The event is on July 27th, from 8pm to 2am. Ritchie & Rivenbark, The Rockadictos and The Dizzy Bird are playing. Proceeds of the bar will benefit Raise the Bar and ECOMB, and help raise awareness to this issue.
A University of Miami medicine student launched a program that is bound to launch Miami way ahead in the global green movement.
“Miami has been very behind in the green revolution, but now it’s time to step up to the plate,†said Fernanda Medici, one of the program assistants of ECOMB who is also responsible for pushing the project forward.
Raise the Bar (Miami Beach) is an exciting pilot program designed to promote recycling at local bars across Miami Beach. The program started on Earth Day, April 22nd, 2009, and it provided free recycling services to four select bars across the city through June 2009. In a joint collaboration between the Environmental Coalition of Miami Beach (ECOMB) and World Waste Services, Inc., each bar received complimentary recycling bins and pick-up for the duration of the program. A projected 15,000 bottles and cans have already been recycled in the four bars alone.
This is an unprecedented initiative generously funded by Hands On Miami’s Starbucks
Youth Philanthropy Committee, but this is only the beginning. Founded by committed volunteer / project coordinator, Neha Patel, and ECOMB Director, Luiz Rodrigues, it is intended that the program will eventually grow to incorporate all bars across Miami Beach. Currently, only a small percentage of bars in Miami Beach recycle, despite that recycling is cost-effective, saves money and is mandated by law. As a bold stride towards greenifying Miami Beach, the following bars have graciously committed to the program: Abraxas Lounge, Purdy Lounge, The Catalina, and Waxy O’Connor’s Irish Pub.
The ECOMB volunteers are planning on having a celebratory party at each of the four bars. The intention is to bring awareness to the issue and also raise funds for the organization.

JCI High Speed Business Networking at Mayfair Hotel & Spa in Coconut Grove 8/7/09
Here is some good news; business networking events have finally moved into the new millennium!
For years business networking events have followed the same formula. People show up, mingle, and leave with some business cards. Not this time. Thanks to the efforts of a few passionate, inspired and driven young people, there is a new way to network!
The Junior Chamber International (also known as JCI or the Jaycees) is a worldwide federation of young leaders and entrepreneurs with chapters in over 110 countries. Thanks to their creativity and desire to improve people to people networking, they have come up with a method which allows professionals to truly get the most out business contact exchanges. This new method is high speed networking, also known in the JCI community as “Business Networking Event†or BNE.
This new way of networking allows a participant to meet 10 -15 business contacts in about an hour, spending as little as 3 minutes talking to someone with whom they may be able to do business. The secret? Bypassing formalities and realizing that time is of the essence.
Now that you have a better understanding of this revolutionary way of making professional contacts, we would like to introduce you to one of the chapters that will help your reach your professional goals, that chapter is the JCI of Coconut Grove.
Known as the Champagne Chapter, the Jaycees of Coconut Grove have been around for more than thirty years and has been recognized as one of the most outstanding chapters in the nation. In additional, the chapter has seen many awards, including “Most Outstanding Chapter in all of the Americas”, and in 2002, the JCI World Congress recognized it as one of the best chapters in the world.
This summer the JCI of Coconut Grove has decided to organize a BNE that will bring together young professionals and entrepreneurs from all corners of the globe. The event will be one of many activities offered to those who are interested in leadership and professional development during the appropriately entitled “Gateway of the Americas†Conference. During this three-day conference, Miami will be showcased as the city with the strongest business, cultural, and international connections among the countries in the Americas.
The BNE portion will be taking place at the Mayfair Hotel & Spa in Coconut Grove, on Friday August 7th, 2009. Registration will start at 6:00 pm and the networking activities will begin at 7:30pm. Come early to enjoy free appetizers and an introduction to the conference by a key leader in the community. Trust us when we say you will not want to miss out on this opportunity!
Registration information can be found at [URL] or alternately by calling Conny Miranda & Lily Martinez at (786) 443-0659 / (786) 444-6403 or via email at connymiranda@msn.com / limaest@yahoo.com

ABOUT THE FILM
Official Selection of the Sundance Film Festival 2009 and Cannes Film Festival 2009
It’s been a decade since Ben and Andrew were the bad boys of their college campus. Ben has settled down and found a job, wife, and home. Andrew took the alternate route as a vagabond artist, skipping the globe from Chiapas to Cambodia. When Andrew shows up unannounced on Ben’s doorstep, they easily fall back into their old dynamic of macho one-upmanship. Late into the night at a wild party, the two find themselves locked in a mutual dare: to enter an amateur porn contest together. But what kind of boundary-breaking, envelope pushing porn can two straight dudes make? After the booze and “big talk” run out, only one idea remains?they will have sex together?on camera. It’s not porn; it’s art. But how exactly will it work? And more importantly, who will tell Anna (Delmore), Ben’s wife?
Writer/director Lynn Shelton, director of My Effortless Brilliance and recipient of the “Someone to Watch Award” at the 2009 Independent Spirit Awards, expertly mines the biggest ironies of the male ego to hilarious effect. HUMPDAY is a buddy movie gone wild.
“The movie’s unblinking observation of a friendship put to the test is amused, queasy making, kindhearted and unfailingly truthful.” -The New York Times
Workshop with artist Fritz Haeg’s Salon Colada 7/25/09

Fritz Haeg engages in diverse artistic and curatorial practices that challenge the everyday. His work has been shown at the Whitney Biennial in New York and Tate Modern in London, and he is the author of Edible Estates: Attack on the Front Lawn and The Sundown Salon Unfolding Archive.
Join artist Fritz Haeg as he discusses his project Salon Colada: Miami HQ, an installation and series of salon discussions he initiated for the exhibition, CONVENTION. Also present will be Keith Waddington and Mindy Nelson, the Coral Gables couple who are hosting the salons in their home while their living room contents are being displayed at MOCA. Los Angeles-based artist, architect and designer Haeg engages in diverse artistic and curatorial practices that include designing houses, facilitating grassroots political activism, and experimenting in radical gardening. Rejecting categorization and specialization, Haeg is attracted to multidisciplinary projects that manifest as social opportunities and inspirational models.
Fritz Haeg has been exhibited at the 2008 Whitney Biennial in New York, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Contemporary Art Museum Baltimore, and the Tate Modern in London. This month, Haeg has published an artist book The Sundown Salon Unfolding Archive, a comprehensive account of a series of salons he held in Los Angeles from 2001-2006 that will be for sale in the MOCA Shop. The salons’ exchange of ideas and art through events, gatherings, and performances came to represent an alternative model to the isolated solitary practice of creating in a private studio or office and became a celebration of communal response to a common purpose and specific environment. Haeg is also the author of Edible Estates: Attack on the Front Lawn (2008) which chronicled the conversion of several sod lawns of private homes into productive vegetable gardens.

cocktails at the grand opening of Don Chile Restaurant in Coral Gables 7/22/09

DON CHILE OPENS AND ADDS SOME “SPICE†TO THE “CITY BEAUTIFULâ€
Coral Gables which is no stranger to housing great eateries is about to add a dash of spice to those who like it a little hot. Don Chile restaurant is ready to take its spot as the best authentic Mexican restaurant in South Florida as owner/chef Erubiel Gutierrez displays his heritage and culinary artistry with a grand opening celebration that will feature music, food, and margaritas! Located on Ponce De Leon Don Chile should be a favorite of the Miracle Mile business sector and residents of Coral Gables.
Don Chile with the help of Creativas Group Public Relations have planned a grand opening event that will feature live mariachi performances, cocktails, food, celebrities, VIP’s, and city officials. A ceremonial ribbon cutting will be spear headed by Coral Gables city officials and the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce. Celebrities Adriana Cataño, Latin Grammy winner Jorge Moreno, and renowned artist Carlos A Navarro will be on hand for the celebration. Guests can expect to sip on delicious margarita cocktails compliments of Don Chile. Pisco O, which is a high end Peruvian brandy, will also be a featured spirit at the festivities. The Grand Opening of Don Chile will feature bite sized versions of Chef Erubiel Gutierrez’s dishes.
Born in Campeche, Mexico Erubiel Gutierrez is no stranger authentic Mexican Cuisine. Gutierrez who graduated from the Iniciacion University with a degree in graphic design could not keep himself out of the kitchen and thus spent 16 years honing his culinary skills working out of various restaurants. Gutierrez grew tired of the extremely casual or basterdized franchise Mexican restaurants that promoted themselves as authentic. He envisioned a restaurant that would feature true Mexican dishes. To Gutierrez the food from his birth land is an art.
Mexican food is considered by many to be one of the first great fusion cuisines created when 4th century Spaniards imported rice, pork, beef, wine, and other ingredients and fused them with the foods of the indigenous Aztec and Mayan Indians. Gutierrez is a master at creating food with varied flavors, colorful decoration, and combinations of spices and ingredients that true Mexican food is known for. His love of heritage and food finally gave way to his dream of opening his own restaurant which features “Las recetas de Mama†or mothers own recipes.
Don Chile is a family restaurant which features traditional dishes. What amazes most is how balanced the food is. No one ingredient overpowers another which is the opposite with most Americanized Mexican restaurants. The menu is filled with favorites like fajitas, flautas, and carne asada as well as not so well-known traditional Mexican dishes like Torta Chilanga, Pato Castellano which is a dish featuring duck, and the very interesting pickled oyster dish which is an excellent combination of pickled seafood and vegetables.
One can expect to enjoy their meal with a margarita or two while taking in the décor which was designed professionally. The design of this charmingly casual restaurant strikes a perfect blend between traditional and modern décor. Don’t expect overly ethnic décor such as clay pottery or cactus plants. Warm colored fabrics drape from overhead while stunningly oversized pre-Columbian styled masks adorn the walls.
Gutierrez’s vision which is to extend his rich heritage to the masses, is about to come to fruition. Gutierrez wishes to welcome the public to a grand opening celebration on July 22nd from 6:30-9pm that will be a spectacular affair featuring a ribbon cutting, Coral Gables city officials, Mexican Chamber, Mexican Consulate, local celebrities, and VIPS as well as a ribbon cutting ceremony.
For additional information on Don Chile in Coral Gables located at 1915 Ponce De Leon BLVD 33134 and via phone at 305-461-1566.P lease contact: Creativas Group (305) 968-2384 and via email at: info@creativasgroup.com for media coverage, and interviews. Seraphic Fire Presents: Tableau Baroque in Handel’s Inheritance
Par ot Seraphic Fire’s NEW Summer Series. Join us for Handel’s Inheritance, a musical journey through the formative years of this giant of the Baroque period. Starting in Halle, Germany, we trace his travels through Italy and into England, savoring the cosmopolitan blending of French, Italian, and Germanic styles so popular in Europe at he time. Hear the music of Handel’s youth, from chapel, chamber, and stage, as these influences blend into the unmistakable sound of the mature master. Through the compositions of Corelli, Keiser, Schelle, J.P. Krieger, Zachow, Steffani, Handel himself, and others, experience the sonic tapestry of the world in which this young composer became the man we now celebrate. Tableau Baroque is an American chamber music ensemble dedicated to bringing the music of the Baroque to life through emotionally connected, historically informed, illuminating performances. Core members Ian Howell, countertenor, and Henry Lebedinsky, early keyboards, are joined for this concert by Michael Albert, baroque violin/countertenor, and Brian Howard, baroque cello.
