12 graphic artists from across the country have designed mock posters of iconic African Americans including Harriet Tubman, Nat Turner and the Black Panthers. This subversive exhibition uses movie poster artwork to examine the 1970s Black Exploitation film genre and its role in casting contemporary truths and challenging fixed notions of history. Curated by Roderick Southall of Obsidian Arts (MN).
Our gallery located at 800 Lincoln Road on Miami Beach is free and open to the public.

“A Penetrable such as this one in Wynwood opens up a new experience of an aesthetic nature because it deals with moving space. Whether it is us, or the wind blowing that provokes it, the visual and imaginary reality it offers us is like an illuminating path, or Tao. How this illumination is produced depends on the willingness of whoever agrees to experience it. But what we do not doubt is that the challenge he throws at us to change our pre-conceived opinions regarding reality, is sufficient to encourage us to travel the path proposed by him.
Whoever experiences the sensation of finding him / herself within a living object such as Soto’s Penetrables, would then understand the intimate meaning of his work’s poetic structure. Those vibrant rods—all blue, in this case—reveal to us a reality that we forget but which exists deep in our traditional culture, as expressed by the Egyptian and the Greek: nothing is static, life is movement. “ Carlos M. Luis.

Future Shock!
The Black Mangrove Collective
From May 29th through 30th, 2009.
The Black Mangrove Collective presents Future Shock; a two-day only art exhibit with an opening reception on Friday, May 29th from 8-11pm. In a world caught in a perpetual state of flux, all the more felt by the dominance of communication technologies, Future Shock explores the work of twelve diverse artists who examine the effects of rapid technological, political, and social change in our society. The title is a reference to a book written by the futurist Alvin Toffler in 1970. Themes of transience, identity, memory, communication, originality, and spirituality are explored as well as how people adapt to the pace of change at the dawn of the 21st century. The artwork in Future Shock raises fundamental questions about the impact that technology has on our experience of contemporary life. Artists present this through a variety of mediums including video, interactive installations, decollages, mixed media, sculpture, and photography. Featured artists include Orlando Estrada, Kiwi Farah, Samuel Gualtieri, The Human Observation Society, Cristina Molina, Federico Nessi, Roxy Ramos, Rosemarie Romero, Nancy Trevino, TV, Kacey Westall Keogh, and Melissa Wallen.

“Hanno ammazzatu compare Turiddu” (Turiddu has been killed). With this dramatic phrase, concludes the story of popular chivalry tradition in the old Sicily of the 19th Century. Love, jealousy and infidelity create the drama that ends in a death among friends. The story of Giovanni Vega attracted Mascagni theatrical intuition to create one of the most popular opera of the Italian repertoire, Cavalleria Rusticana (Rustic Chivalry).
Come and listen to the most beautiful and dramatic melodies with its famous “Intermezzo” great arias and duets and the choral with popular mystic songs that villagers sing to nature and Holiness.
The selection of a dual opera program with Cavalleria and Suor Angelica will provide our public with two extraordinary works from Mascagni and Puccini very close to the hearts of the opera lovers. Traditionally I Pagliacci combines with Cavalleria on the same performance but we felt that Suor Angelica would add freshness and emotion to a dramatic evening experience.
Meet some of the Cavalleria’s Artists
Veronica Murua (Santuzza). Young Mexican Soprano who makes her first appearance with MLO. She has performed the role in Mexico with great success.
Francesco Valpa (Turiddu). Francesco is an Italian tenor well remembered by our public for his remarkable performance of the same role in 2004 receiving enthusiastic reviews by the Miami Herald. He also sung with MLO La Boheme as the poet Rodolfo with great success.
Kevin Misslich (Alfio). Mr. Misslich makes his debut with MLO in the role of Alfio. He is a talented baritone having performed in different opera houses around the nation.

At CCEMiami. Free Admission

“The Tulse Luper Suitcases” is a trilogy of 120-minute feature films covering 16 episodes in the life of Tulse Luper, a “professional” prisoner. Featuring sixteen prisons, the trilogy reconstructs the story of his life from the evidence of 92 suitcases found around the world between 1928 and 1989.
Imprisoned for as many reasons as are conceivable, including the real and imagined crimes of lust, espionage, greed, love, wrongful impersonation, embezzlement, murder, political ambition and ambition itself, Tulse Luper makes being prisoner into an art. The story covers sixty years of history, from the anniversary of the discovery of Uranium (1928) to the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

Lecture – Things Looked Different Back Then: The Endless Renaissance and How All Art is Contemporary
Thursday, May 28th, 7:00pm
Visual experience, it turns out, has evolved over time. This means that we cannot think of art as a single ‘problem’ expressed to better and worse degrees in different times and places – instead, we need to see that the Renaissance is truly endless, with constant re-discoveries of “new ways of seeing.”
This lecture will introduce key aspects of the visual culture of the Renaissance and Baroque periods as a means of thinking differently about how contemporary art and art of the Renaissance have more in common than meets the eye.
Guest curator Steven Holmes has curated exhibitions for The Palais de Tokyo in Paris, the Kunste-Werke Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin, as well as exhibitions throughout the United States and the Caribbean. His projects have been reviewed in The New York Times, The New Yorker Magazine, Art in America, Art Forum, Art News, Tema Celeste, Flash Art International and Art New England. His most recent book, Festschrift, was published by Leo Press in 2008. Mr. Holmes holds a MFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, and a MTS from Harvard.
Free with museum admission. Come early and view the exhibition! Galleries will stay open until 7pm.

The most buzzed about salon Primp Salon & Hair Extension Boutique is open to the public starting Tuesday 5/26/09

Primp Salon & Hair Extension Boutique will bring a breath of fresh air
to Miami Beachs’15th street on May 26th, 2009.
primp_logo_final
The once line of tattoo parlors and closed businesses that shaped 15th street will transform to a new look and feel with the opening of Primp Salon & Hair Extension Boutique in June 2009. The temporary purple window coverings warm the street while owner, Jonathan Babicka, adds the final touches inside. Primp Salon’s deep purple walls, antique tin ceiling, stunning chandeliers, and golden mirrors create a sense of elegance and comfort contrary to the common hair salon décor.

Within the boutique salon, guests will receive personal attention in one of the four lavish stations. Primp Salon is a full service hair salon for men and women that offers precision cuts, one process color or retouch, high-lighting/ low-lighting, Brazilian relaxing/ straightening, conditioning treatments, blow outs, and styling. Pricing at Primp Salon is set to be affordable so that guests can enjoy the experience that they deserve even in today’s economy. Another added value of this South Beach hair salon is the complimentary valet.

In addition to the décor, Primp Salon differs from the average salon by offering same day hair extensions. The 100% real human hair extensions are readily available for the reason that Jonathan Babicka has been distributing these products and other salon exclusive products to leading South Florida salons for the past five years. The Primp Salon will also act as an educational facility once a week to train local stylists on these products, hair extension application, and current trends.

Primp Salon & Hair Extension Boutique is located at 407 15th St. Miami Beach, Fl 33139 and will be open Monday 3 p.m. to 8p.m.; Tuesday – Sunday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Primp Salon stylists are also available for in-room hotel services and special event bookings. To book an appointment in advance or in-room hotel service please call 786.999.4151. For more information please visit www.primpsobe.com.

The Class
(Directed by Laurent Cantet/France/2008)
With François Bégaudeau, Nassim Amrabt, Laura Bacuela, Juliette Damaille
François and his fellow teachers prepare for a new year at a high school in a tough neighborhood. Armed with the best intentions, they brace themselves to not let discouragement stop them from trying to give the best education to their students. Cultures and attitudes often clash in the classroom, a microcosm of contemporary France. As amusing and inspiring as the teenaged students can be, their difficult behavior can still jeapordize any teacher’s enthusiasm for the low-paying job. François insists on an atmosphere of respect and diligence. Neither stuffy nor severe, his extravagant frankness often takes the students by surprise. But his classroom ethics are put to the test when his students begin to challenge his methods…
In French with English subtitles.
WINNER: Cannes Film Festival Palm d’Or
“The Class ranks with the very best films ever made about teaching, and it’s unlike any English or American film about teaching ever made.”-The Baltimore Sun

This invitation was sent by Biz Martinez.
Anyone who’s spent a minute clubbing or blogging in the world of dance knows the name Nic Fanciulli (UK). It’s difficult to overlook his resume since breaking thru in 2003. As a label boss, he runs Saved Records along side studio mate Andy Chatterley… you know Skylark, Buick Project?! As a Producer/Remixer extraordinaire, he’s gone on to rework the likes of Deep Dish, Tiefschwarz, Steve Lawler, Underworld, X-Press 2, etc, etc… and as a Dj, he’s considered “royalty”; earning the label “King of the Space Ibiza Terrace” among other residencies at some of the planet’s finest clubs.

His Latest release: The Global Underground CD… the 2 disc compilation showcases Nic’s range as he glides & slices thru genres of Electronic Dance Muse. In disc 1, Nic seamlessly transistions from Metro Area’s electric-disco-funk into the Detroit techno of DJ Rolando. Disc 2 is a ride via Nic’s record bag, sprinkled with Fanciulli originals & a remix of Dubfire’s “Emissions”. Properly pieced & programmed for the dancefloor, going from house to minimal to Detroit Techno. Visit http://www.globalunderground.co.uk or sample & buy it on iTunes now.

Lectures: Cremata Gallery Wednesday, May 27th, 2009: 7:00 p.m.
Alliance Française Thursday, June 4th, 2009. 6:00 p.m.
Cremata Gallery and Alliance Française, are pleased to present “Towards Paris!” a panoramic view of Cuban artists that at different times or due to different circumstances have called Paris home. The title comes from the answer given by Eduardo Abela to the question “…where, then, should I direct my steps?” The reply was not difficult, according to Abela: “Towards Paris!” He added, “everyone knows that since the beginning of the XIX Century French painting is the most important in the world.”
Cremata Gallery proposed the idea to Miami’s Alliance Française which immediately accepted the challenge. A working bond was created between Raul Cremata and Philippe Timon director of the Alliance. They joined efforts to advance this venture and offer their respective spaces to allow this unique narrative to unfold. A rich and varied compilation of paintings and sculptures includes works by Cuban leading artists of the last two centuries. Cremata Gallery is proud to present this distinguished selection of works for “Towards Paris!” entirely for sale.
In conjunction with the exhibit, we are offering two lectures with Aldo Menendez art critic, painter and curator of the show, and Carlos M. Luis poet and art critic, who has been intimately connected with French culture for many years.
Among the subjects to be discussed are the influence of France in Cuban art, how the French’s artistic vision leaves its mark on XIX Century art in the island, the specific weight of “Breton’s surrealism” on our avant-garde and post avant-garde, Paris like the Mecca, where many of Cuba’s most important works art have been produced.

Photographs – Rum Renaissance Bacardi VIP Party

{The Rum Renaissance Festival is probably one of the best ideas I have ever seen! Instead of throwing some other kind of event and trying to get alcohol sponsors, just throw an alcohol event! You are sure to get plenty of free alcohol. Last night was a great example of this. Held at the private Bacardi Museum, there was, of course, all the Bacardi you could possibly guzzle in 3 hours, including some types that you cannot get here in America. They also catered the reception with really amazing food.I rarely recommend anything directly, but the Rum Renaissance, I highly recommend. The Grand Tasting starts in a few hours from when I am posting this, 2p-6pm Saturday, May 16th. Go go go! There are still several VIP parties left, so I recommend the VIP pass.}

Art Viceroy Series Kicks Off 5/19/09

On May 19, Club 50 at Viceroy Miami will host its second Art Viceroy event, this summer’s weekly Tuesday night series that presents local artists in the disciplines of video, performance, sculptural and installation art. The series will rotate from Club 50, perched atop the 50th floor at Viceroy Miami to the stunning Philippe Starck-designed Spa, showcasing two of Icon Brickell’s own works of art. Guests are invited to sip cocktails from Ruinart and enjoy breathtaking views of downtown Miami, while engaging their visual senses.

ELEVATE YOUR ART EXPERIENCE
Viceroy Miami announces its revolving Tuesday night art and cocktails series, Art on 50. Art on 50 will feature the work of Miami-based artists, emerging and mid-career, in the disciplines of video, performance, sculptural and installation art- all set within the highly styled confines of the intimate and exclusive Club 50.

Art on 50, part of the Art Viceroy series, invites guests to unwind, enjoy soaring views and acclaimed artistic events that will take place each Tuesday night for the next 12 weeks. Twelve artists are being selected by curators Annhy Shim and Erika Pastoriza to create a strong body of works that seek to entertain and elevate guests’ experiences. One artist will be featured each week.

“We wanted to take an unconventional approach to ‘presenting’ art…people tend to forget that art extends beyond paintings and two-dimensional works,” says Shim who, in 2005, directed the One Miami Riverwalk with the Related Group of Florida. “The selected artists are well known in the Miami arts community and have works with broad appeal,” says Pastoriza. In the coming weeks, artists who will feature their works in Club 50 include: Michelle Weinberg, David Rohn, Luis Garcia-Nerey, Venessa Monokian and Karin Garcia to name a few.

Viceroy Miami, a new-comer to Brickell’s hotel corridor recognized the need to advocate Miami’s still-thriving and still-emerging art scene. Inspired by the hotel’s strong relation to art and design, with interiors by Kelly Wearstler and exterior structural sculptures by Philippe Starck, Art Viceroy will develop arts-focused programming throughout the course of the year, utilizing the hotel’s settings to host special art events and engagements starting with Art on 50 and Art Spa.

The opening night of the Art on 50 series is Tuesday May 12th, with performance artist, Belaxis Buil. Art on 50 partners include Ruinart Champagne and Green Art USA supporting the Green Art Center in Miami.

MDPL presents a screening of Strange Impersonation 5/12/09

ART DECO FILM SERIES
Tuesday 12 May 7:00 pm

FILM NOIR CLASSICS
Film noir, a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish Hollywood crime dramas, often emphasizes moral ambiguity and sexual motivation, derived from the hard-boiled school of crime fiction that emerged in the United States during the Depression. Hollywood’s classic film noir period is generally regarded as stretching from the early 1940s to the late 1950s, and films of this genre are associated with a low-key black-and-white visual style that has roots in German Expressionist cinematography.
strange_stamp
Strange Impersonation
Directed by Anthony Mann
USA/1946/68 minutes/B&W
Hard-boiled film noir masquerading as a women’s melodrama, Strange Impersonation is a twisted tale of jealousy, murder, revenge and facial disfigurement from director Anthony Mann (T-Men, Raw Deal). Brenda Marshall stars as Nora Goodrich, a single-minded scientist who spurns marriage for the sake of her pioneering work with anesthetics. When her jealous lab partner (Hillary Brooke) sabotages an experiment, Nora’s face is badly scarred, and–through a twist of fate–she swaps identities with a devious blackmailer (Ruth Ford), letting the world believe she is dead. Under the guise of Jane Karaski, Nora has her face surgically altered, establishes a new career and works her way back into the lives of her former enemies and lovers, where she can carry out her carefully planned revenge. Free admission.

Poplife announces 10 Year Anniversary Event 6/6/09

MIAMI’S INDIE CULTURE STAPLE LIVES ON AFTER TEN SPIRITED AND FRUITFUL YEARS

POPLIFE Celebrates a Decade of Indie Music and Nightlife

On Saturday, June 6, POPLIFE will commemorate 10 years of showcasing indie music and providing a compelling, alternative cultural hub for nightlife revelers. The 10-year anniversary celebration will feature a live performance by Atlanta indie rockers Snowden, along with very special surprise guests yet to be announced, DJ sets by Aramis, Induce and Mike Deuce, lots of giveaways (music, T-shirts, etc), and the unveiling of a new logo, all at White Room, 1306 North Miami Ave., Downtown Miami.

Every major city has its share of alternative platforms and weekly indie parties on the nightlife circuit. Yet Miami has seen very few live venues and nightlife-driven events that hone in on a colorful diversity of indie music. Back in 1999, POPLIFE emerged as an antidote to the homogenized sheen of South Beach nightlife. Founding partners Aramis Lorie and Barbara Basti (later joined by Jake Jefferson) envisioned a weekly event focused on music and the arts – a social gathering for individuals seeking an alternative to Miami nightlife, and a place to dance and mingle with like-minded individuals.

Throughout the years, POPLIFE has become instrumental in developing Miami as a viable market for non-mainstream acts and talent. In addition to offering a platform to local acts, the organization has produced and promoted numerous events and concerts, including Le Tigre, Peaches, MIA, Of Montreal, Interpol, The Magnetic Fields, Jose Gonzalez, Chicks on Speed, The Faint, Yelle, Ladytron, Ratatat, Prefuse 73, Lansing-Dreiden, Jamie Lidell, Spank Rock, The Walkmen, Mum, Santogold, Green Velvet, Junior Boys, Mylo, Calvin Harris, Chairlift, Cat Power, Modest Mouse, Animal Collective, and many, many more.

Good music is king in the realm of POPLIFE, and its longstanding mission has prevailed as an alternative music outlet, encompassing non-mainstream artists and genres. The POPLIFE nightcrawlers dig into everything from indie rock and electronica to grime, traversing all aural, subterranean spaces in between. The key is to listen and dance all the way through, caroused and blithe.

But POPLIFE has always been more than just a party. It is a culture, and its devotees are passionate and diehard. The founders actually pioneered areas of Miami that are now considered hip, such as the Design District in 2000 when the event was hosted at The Piccadilly Garden. Same with the 14th Street/Downtown Miami club row, when the event was moved to the newly-opened I/O in 2003. Lorie and Basti are downtown trailblazers who have owned and operated venues such as I/O Lounge, The District Restaurant and Lounge, PS14 (28 NE 14th St., 305-358-3600), and – most recently – the new Ecco Pizzateca and Lounge (168 SE 1st St., 305-960-1900), in Downtown Miami.

By now, POPLIFE has garnered international attention and various globetrotting characters have stopped by to join the party – from Moby to Michael Stipe to Irvine Welsh. POPLIFE patrons are innovators, artists, tastemakers, hip kids, and dancing queens. Expanding its horizons, the organization continues to pursue collaborations, such as with The Rhythm Foundation, Le Baron (Paris), MAP Magazine (themapmag.com), Design Miami, Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin, Locust Projects, O.H.W.O.W., and several more. Their official photographer, Nefariousgirl (nefariousgirl.com), has been documenting all the events since 2004.

The POPLIFE collective has also brought its distinct brand to the Beach, producing and promoting weekly parties, such as LoveLife Sundays at The Standard (since 2007, with its infamous, rollicking Bingo game), Good Clean Fun every Thursday at Rok Bar, and Dirty Hairy every Wednesday at LIV at the Fontainebleau.

Currently, the signature event is still hosted at White Room, 1306 North Miami Ave., Downtown Miami, every Saturday night starting at 10pm.

POPLIFE has come a long way from its first incarnation on June 4, 1999. Here’s to ten years, and many more fruitful ones to come.

Photographs – Exxxotica Miami 2009 (NSFW) 5/10/09

So, it has been a while since I posted any photographs, but here are some good ones. Exxxotica Miami!
Note these are probably NOT SAFE FOR WORK. So, if the boss is around, you might want to come back later.
Unfortunately, we did not have much time to go, but we made it by Exxxotica Miami on Sunday afternoon. It was not packed, but there was definitely a decent crowd. I think the whole event was better than last year. More energetic, more starlets and semi-naked girls, more videos on display.

Photographs from Exxxotica Miami on Sunday, May 10, 2009
Yes, I took a lot of photos at Exxxotica this year. Everyone was very cooperative and friendly, and we had a great time!  On with the show!

Last warning – NOT SAFE FOR WORK

The Miami Rescue Mission Health Clinic–Fact Sheet
A partnership between Miami Dade College and the Miami Rescue Mission
DESCRIPTION: The Miami Dade College Medical Center Campus (MDC) and the Miami Rescue Mission (MRM) have a long history of collaboration. Located less than one mile apart, hundreds of MDC nursing and health sciences students and faculty have provided services to the men, women, and children served by the Mission over the years; and many Mission graduates have enrolled and earned degrees from MDC. As part of this partnership, the MDC School of Nursing and the leaders of the MRM created “The Mission Project” in 2000 with the goals of improving student achievement and clinical skills, cultivating civic responsibility, expanding awareness of health needs, and most especially, improving the health of the community’s homeless. A long-term goal of the Mission Project has been to establish an on-site clinic at the Miami Rescue Mission, staffed partly by MDC Nursing and Health Sciences students and faculty, to serve the primary needs of those at the Mission and in the surrounding Overtown neighborhoods. This clinic is scheduled to open on May 14, 2009.
MAIN PARTNERS: Miami Rescue Mission, Miami Dade College Medical Center Campus, Miami-Dade Area Health Education Center (AHEC), MDC Center for Community Involvement.
RATIONALE: The MRM serves approximately 1,000 men, women and children a month. Many of these people have little or no access to health care. The new clinic will serve the clients of the MRM and eventually residents of the Overtown community. The area of the MRM is designated as a “Medically Underserved Area/Population” and as a “Health Professional Shortage Area” by the Department of Health and Human Services.
STAFFING: MRM is the host agency and site of the clinic. Dr. Peter Gutierrez, MD, MMS, PA-C, is Director of MDC’s Physician Assistant program and will coordinate clinical education for Physician Assistant students, while providing medical direction for the clinic. Annette Gibson MSN, MEd, RN, Professor, School of Nursing, will coordinate education and outreach service-learning programs involving MDC Nursing and Health Sciences students and faculty. The clinic will serve as a main clinical site for Physician Assistant students. MDC students and faculty from Nursing and Health Sciences will help staff the clinic, as will students from additional health profession programs from other colleges in South Florida.
CURRENT STATUS: Initial funding was provided by the Boston Scientific Foundation and the Michael Capponi Group for the development and construction of the on-site clinic. The clinic consists of a waiting room, two offices and two patient examination rooms with room for expansion. In February 2009, MRM and MDC personnel received the “Certificate of Need to Practice in an Area of Critical Need” from the Florida State Department of Health in order to open the clinic. Future grant proposals will focus on meeting long-term needs of the Mission Project health clinic including materials and additional staff necessary for operation, as well as outreach screening and education projects.
CLINIC KICK-OFF EVENT: The MRM and MDC are organizing a grand-opening ceremony of the on-site MRM Clinic. This event will include a health fair with education and screening, and treatment of the clinic’s first patients.

The Free Concert will be the Premier of the World Class Orchestra under World Renowned National Conductor Donald Covert. Impact Artists that will be creating Art Masterpieces during the performance will thrill the audience in this rare form of combining two different Art forms.

The Concert and evening activities will help raise funds for ACIOI, SFLPHL and The Organ Donor Awareness Foundation and bring awareness to other Organizations and the many Musicians, Artists and Sponsors that are involved in this worthy project.

There are two Rehearsals at Artserve (Home Base for the Orchestra and ACIOI)
1350 East Sunrise Blvd.
Rehearsals at 6-8 PM
May 12 and May 14
In the Auditorium.

The Press and Public are invited and the purpose of this event is to premier the South Florida Philharmonic Orchestra under the leadership of National Conductor and International Conductor Donald Covert. The Event will be videotaped for distribution to potential Sponsors, Agents, Venue’s and Investors. Contents of this event will be telecast.

GAPAL will be performing his unique Method Chromosymphony and painting 2 pieces each for the 3 concerts.

The Ensemble will be performing to a huge crowd, expected to be at the door and down US1 from the Performing Arts Center in Hollywood. All three Organizations have done a massive ad campaign since early February and we have scheduled several radio interviews and have the news media supporting these causes.

On April 12, ACIOI represented itself and the Orchestra during the Marlins Game at Dolphin Stadium to a large crowd, ACIOI displayed the rare tiger maple Violin donated to the Orchestra at the Community Clubhouse Booth, we are privileged to have the honor of being recognized by the Marlins for our community leadership.

The Art Division of ACIOI has a campaign for utilizing broken and severely damaged musical equipment and instruments and turning them into art. Sales from these treasures from trash will enable the Orchestra to continue in its development.

The funding for major scheduled productions needs Underwriters, Investors and Sponsors on every level. Sponsors that ACIOI does have are; Toshiba, Marlins, Panthers, Heat, Dolphins, Bills, Steelers, Prizewheel.com, The Florida Aquarium, Horse Power Sales of Boynton Beach, New Times, ARTSERVE, Hollywood Performing Arts Center, Association of Fundraising Professionals, S.C.O.R.E., Hard Rock, Chicago Bulls, Cuillo Center for Arts and WLRN.

The South Florida Philharmonic Orchestra is comprised of 40 of the World’s Best Musicians under the Leadership of International and US National Conductor Donald Covert. All of these Musician’s have an active background in touring, are competition winner’s and many of them are teachers. They have sacrificed long and hard to be at the pinnacle of their chosen Instrument and many have the training in several to many Instruments.

This is a team effort made up of outstanding soloists and throughout this endeavor, the Staff of SFLPHL will bring the individual to the forefront to allow that talent to be shared by all of us. The goal of US National Conductor Donald Covert is to bring a full Orchestra of which he is known for in Europe back to Europe with the World Class Musicians that he is presently training with.

Maestro Donald Covert is one of the very few Conductors worldwide that memorize the work and will lead the Orchestra without sheet music. His scholastic Degrees, Worldwide tours and training under Leonard Bernstein, give him the right to proclaim himself as US National Conductor and we agree with the Maestro.

Sóniko is the creative sonic experience conformed by Alex Izaguirre, Javier Güell, Jorge García and Toto González, rooted in Miami’s underground spectrum of various musical tendencies. The 90’s Grunge, Brit Pop, a decisive base of Rock en Español, and fine arrangements of electronic variations mainly influence their sound and style.
In Sóniko’s first album “Kombustión”, their four members took on the enormous task of producing and working with renowned Grammy award winner Marcelo Añez (Shakira-Unplugged & Thalía), who put the final touches and reaffirmed the band’s desired sound.
A CD that got them 3 MTV Español top ten videos and concerts around the USA including SXSW, Latin Alternative Music Conference and Billboard Latin Music Conference among others.

Sóniko’s second album “Antídoto Parcial” shows their growth as composers and it’s evident in a collection of 12 excellent tracks. On this occasion, the band decided to bring back the locally acclaimed “Laberinto” which wasn’t released in “Kombustión”, with the special appearance of Gabriel from Minimal joining Alex on vocals.
The band will celebrate on May 21st at Transit Lounge the release or their new album in Miami with a free event supported by Myspace Latino, Jack Daniels, Gibson and Fábrika. This event will be special because SONIKO will do a live Internet broadcast for all their fans and friends outside Miami. This live broadcast will start at 10PM Eastern time at www.soniko.com
Since their origins in 2002, Sóniko is one of those bands that have triggered Miami’s interest in indie rock in both the Anglo and Latin community. Their local success has reached out to other places such as California, New York, Georgia, Texas and Puerto Rico. Through Fabrika, Myspace, Facebook and several other music related Internet sites, the band has built up a strong international fan base, which is awaiting the moment of Soniko’s powerful live performance to be back and also to be seen for the first time.

FUTURE SHOCK!
The Black Mangrove Collective presents Future Shock! a two -day only show with an opening reception on Friday, May 29th from 8-11pm.

In a world caught in a perpetual state of flux, all the more felt by the dominance of communication technologies, Future Shock explores the work of twelve diverse artists who examine the effects of rapid technological, political, and social change in society. Artists present this through video, interactive installations, decollages, mixed media, sculpture, and photography.

Flamingo Park Masterplan
Images of Flamingo Neighborhood Improvement Program
The Flamingo Park Neighborhood Association, Miami Beach Community Development Corporation and the City of Miami Beach – CIP Department will jointly host a preview opening of a Special Exhibit of neighborhood improvement plans for Flamingo Park and Neighborhood Streetscape Improvement Projects.

Immediately preceding the 6:00 pm exhibit opening, the Flamingo Neighborhood Association will convene a brief business meeting, 5:00 to 6:00 pm to discuss special event applications.

The Neighborhood Exhibit presents images of the Flamingo Park Masterplan and Neighborhood Streetscape Improvement Projects for the information of residents of the area – bordered by Fifth Street on the South, Lincoln Road on the North, Washington Avenue on the East, and Alton Road on the West. This exhibit preview coincides with celebration of the 30th Year Anniversary of the Recognition of the Miami Beach Art Deco Architectural District on the National Register of Historic Places.

The City of Miami Beach Office of Capital Improvement Projects is working with architects/designers Wolfberg Alvarez on the Flamingo Park Masterplan which will include removal of the Property Maintenance, a new tennis center, upgrade of the tennis courts, improvements to Memorial Field football and track facilities, upgrade of restroom facilities, community garden, restoration of the historic building, improved pathways and edge treatments, enhanced landscaping, security lighting, site furnishings and other park improvements.

Proposed Neighborhood Improvements include water and stormwater projects to be funded by Water and Stormwater Bonds as well as above ground Streetscape Improvements primarily funded by G O Bonds. The Streetscape Improvement program evolved from a series of recommendations that emerged from resident initiated community design charrettes and City sponsored workshops.

Community Design Recommendations included:
Improvement in the way Flamingo Park relates to the Neighborhood
Increased native shade tree canopy protecting pedestrians from sun & rain
Slow down auto traffic on neighborhood streets through traffic calming
Use street corner landscaping and facilitate shorter pedestrian street crossings
Improve neighborhood connection to Biscayne Bay

Knife In The Water (Nóz w wodzie)
(Directed by Roman Polanski/Poland/1962)
With Leon Niemczyk, Jolanta Umecka, Zygmunt Malonowicz
knifeinthewater
Roman Polanski’s first feature is a brilliant psychological thriller that many critics still consider among his greatest work. The story is simple, yet the implications of its characters’ emotions and actions are profound. When a young hitchhiker joins a couple on a weekend yacht trip, psychological warfare breaks out as the two men compete for the woman’s attention. A storm forces the small crew below deck, and tension builds to a violent climax. With stinging dialogue and a mercilessly probing camera, Polanski creates a disturbing study of fear, humiliation, sexuality, and aggression. This remarkable directorial debut won Polanski worldwide acclaim, a place on the cover of Time, and his first Oscar nomination. In Polish with English subtitles.
WINNER: FIPRESCI Prize Venice Film Festival
“It was the maverick Roman Polanski who emerged onto the international film scene in the early 1960s obsessed not so much with the big issues of the day as with the quirks and backwaters of human nature.”-Peter Cowie
