ArtCenter/South Florida Opening reception Ritual and Process 2/27/10

ArtCenter/South Florida presents the opening reception for Ritual and Process, a guide to sanity and survival in the soon-to-be-present this Saturday night February 27th, 7-10pm.

From February 26 to March 28, 2010, the 800 Lincoln Road Gallery will be home to a medley of icons from the past depicting – even predicting – the direction of our consumer society. Artists Orlando Estrada, Rosemarie Romero and Kacey Westall Keogh combine their works to comment on the evolution of the human experience. Using their intuition and low-tech media, they focus on the preservation and deconstruction of history, current events and their own frustrations with an uncertain world. The event and exhibit are free and open to the public. www.artcentersf.org.

Ritual and Process was conceived as a reaction and reflection to Estrada, Romero and Keogh’s life in the information age. Born into “Generation Y”, their upbringing was marked by pervasive communication devices, mass media and digital technologies in which daily life consists of sensory bombardment, spiritual loss and social alienation. In a culture where the media shapes the sense of reality for many, religion has been replaced by the worship of consumer products, pop icons and photojournalism that according to the artists, illustrates the apocalypse.

Grand Opening of The Strip on South Beach 3/4/10

This has now been unexpectedly delayed until next week. The launch dates are now scheduled for the following week – March 4, 5, and 6.

New Miami Beach Nightclub Serves Up Daring Burlesque at The Strip
South Beach Club Takes the Lead in Showcasing World Class Performance Art

In the heart of South Beach, The Strip, a new exclusive nightclub is setting a new bar for nightlife entertainment. The décor is best described as the Golden Age of Hollywood and you’ll feel as if you just stepped into a very naughty femme fatale’s boudoir: plush velvet seating, suspended swings, 12-foot crystal chandeliers, and walls covered with leather, fringe, and feathers — creating the perfect pleasure den to showcase burlesque and cutting-edge performance art. The Strip will leave you breathless with its raw sex appeal.

The Strip has pulled together a “Dream Team” of entertainment that will create the buzz and define the Strip. Emmy nominated Glenn Douglas Packard , says, “The Strip is going to be a new pleasure playground in Miami Beach.” Packard has worked with the likes of Michael Jackson, Pink, Usher, and Missy Elliot. DJ Jeffrey Tonnensen , has performed at top events around the globe and now he is music stylist for The Strip. His diverse sets at Socialista, Beatrice, and Gold Bar have been the dance soundtrack of downtown Manhattan nightlife and now he is crafting the musical identity for The Strip. Words can’t describe WildChild. Adding a strong dose of sexuality to his acts, he is contortionist and a chameleon, always mesmerizing and always surprising — making him a true performance artist without peer. Performer, vocalist and songwriter Tokyo Diiva is living art and describes her style as “A living caricature with a sprinkle of animation!” Add tantalizing VIP hostesses and you’ve got a phantasmagorical mouthwatering icing on the cake.

Designed by Lisa Halloran, the nightclub is on two open levels, yet the space feels intimate rather than cavernous and state-of-the-art technology reigns. Available for private parties, product launches or special events, The Strip is located at 330 Lincoln Road in Miami Beach and is scheduled to open Thursday, March 4, 2010. For reservations call 305.532.2330 or visit www.thestripmiami.com.

Management Team: The Strip boasts a management team with over 50 years combined experience in the nightlife entertainment industry:

Eric Levin: Heading the team, Eric knows the secret to success in the South Beach nightlife scene having founded some of the most recognized restaurant and lounge concepts throughout South Florida. The Chili Pepper (South Beach, Atlanta and Fort Lauderdale), Rumi in South Beach, and Karma in Atlanta, to name a few. The Founder of Pro Access, Eric works with the biggest names and properties in the entertainment industry including the National Football League, Universal Playboy Enterprise, IMG, Wilhelmina and Ford Models.

James Butler: Currently the host of the top rated and three-time IDMA nominated Crobar Bora Music House Cast in iTunes, Butler is no stranger to South Beach nightlife. He has over 20 years experience managing top nightclubs around the globe including Nerve, Amnesia, Nikki Beach, Crobar and Shadow Lounge Venezuela. Butler credits the most exciting time in his career to working under Prince at the infamous Glam Slam. James has produced shows during the Winter Music Festival with top talent and uses his background in theatre from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts to carve out new territory within nightlife entertainment.

Miami International Film Festival 3/5-14/10

Tickets on Sale Today for 2010 Miami International Film Festival
February 19th, 2010
The 27th edition of the Miami International Film Festival (MIFF), which takes place March 5th – 14th, 2010, is produced and hosted by Miami Dade College. This year‘s Festival will showcase 115 films from 45 countries, including five world premieres, 22 North American premieres and 14 U.S. premieres. This year’s competition categories include Ibero-American, World, DOX, Cutting the Edge and Shorts. Special sections unique to MIFF include Cinema 360Ëš, Encuentros, REEL Education Seminar Series, Florida Focus and the inaugural Diesel Online Shorts Competition.
“Once again we are very pleased to bring the region a dynamic and provocative Festival program. I am especially pleased with the many educational opportunities the Festival will afford with its many seminars, workshops and timely conversations,” said Dr. Eduardo J. Padrón, President, Miami Dade College.
TOP TALENT AND HIGHLIGHTS
Among the films screening at MIFF this year are the dramas CITY ISLAND, starring Miami favorite Andy Garcia, his daughter Dominik García-Lorido and Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globe winner for Best Female Actor in a TV Drama Series, Julianna Margulies (THE GOOD WIFE); PLEASE GIVE, starring Amanda Peet, Catherine Keener and Oliver Platt; documentary films, including the international film festival circuit premiere of THE BEATLES ON RECORD by Bob Smeaton and the U.S. premiere of HUGH HEFNER: PLAYBOY, ACTIVIST AND REBEL by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Brigitte Berman. The Festival will also feature the critically acclaimed premiere of Sweden’s THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO (MÄN SOM HATAR KVINNOR) by Niels Arden Oplev and two Best Foreign-Language Film Oscar nominees: Argentina’s THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES (EL SECRETO DE SUS OJOS) by Juan José Campanella and Peru’s THE MILK OF SORROW (LA TETA ASUSTADA) by Claudia Llosa.
“Attending a film festival is not like going to the regular cinema,” explains Artistic Director Tiziana Finzi, a 21-year film festival programming veteran previously with Locarno, Cannes and Venice. This year marks her second Festival in Miami. “It is important to create an experience where you take your time, have a journey around the world and see films that, often times, have little chance to be distributed in mainstream U.S. theaters.”
Ken Loach’s LOOKING FOR ERIC, starring world-famous Manchester United football player Eric Cantona, will raise the curtain on Friday, March 5 as the official Opening Night Film; while THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES (EL SECRETO DE SUS OJOS) will bring the Festival’s activities to an end on Saturday, March 13 as the official Awards Night film.
TRIBUTE
This year’s Career Achievement Tribute ceremony on Wednesday, March 10 at the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts will honor German film director Margarethe Von Trotta, who is most recognized for her films SHEER MADNESS (1983), ROSA LUXEMBURG (1986), ROSENSTRASSE (2003,) and I AM THE OTHER WOMAN (2006). Considered a pioneer and an icon of international feminist cinema since the 1970s, this acclaimed German actress and director ranks among the world’s most important filmmakers. The award presentation will be followed by a special screening of her newest film, VISION, starring her long-time muse, award-winning actress Barbara Sukowa, as Benedictine abbess Hildegard of Bingen, a visionary leader who is credited with ushering Europe out of the Dark Ages and into the Renaissance.
The complete MIFF program is available in print or online at www.miamifilmfestival.com. Tickets are available Friday, February 19th to the general public and can be ordered online at www.miamifilmfestival.com or by phone 305.405.MIFF (6433).

The neighborhood is home to FASHIONmiami , Design Miami, Limited Edition Experiences and hosts an array of events associated with Art Basel Miami Beach.

“The concept behind FASHIONmiami stems from the idea to consolidate multiple fashion events around the city and house them all under one roof – in one week” says FASHIONmiami co-founder Alain Perez. “We will now host Gen-Art’s Fresh Faces shows, the FGI Emerging Designers Competition presented by Chrysler, Custo Barcelona, Funkshion, as well as multiple independently produced runway shows and showcases.”

“We are extremely pleased to have our 6th annual Fresh Faces in Fashion Miami show open FASHIONmiami in the fabulous Design District – which also has been home to our Miami Art Basel events for the past two years!” said Gen Art CEO/Founder Ian Gerard.

“FASHIONmiami promises to be an extraordinary event. The runway shows coupled with the ancillary programming will provide a platform for showcasing the innovation and creativity in today’s fashion industry. FASHIONmiami – which is rich in content, creativity and combines commercial interests that are relevant to consumers – is just the type of programming we strive to promote in the Miami Design District. We are pleased that FASHIONmiami will call the Miami Design District its home.” Says Craig Robins, president and CEO of Dacra Development.

The Miami Design District (www.miamidesigndistict.net) is a unique, 18 square-block neighborhood just north of downtown Miami. The Miami Design District is the location of choice for exclusive retailers and fashion brands. Piano Recital Showcase featuring Rachel Currea 2/27/10

Rachel Currea
grand winner of our
2009 *Talent Quest Miami competition
Advance Tickets available here.
Advance tickets online $15. At the door: $20.
ABOUT RACHEL
Rachel Currea began composing consistently when she was 19 years old as a way to relax from the rigors of classical music training and the demands of college and work. Shortly after she composed her first few pieces, she suffered a serious auto accident with head trauma. For the next ten years Rachel found it nearly impossible to compose, but continued to perform and teach piano. Her breakthrough in composing again came with learning the art of meditation. Her CD of piano solos, “Inner Sound” is a tribute to this creative and personal breakthrough.

Rachel waited until the last minute to enter the 2009 Talent Quest Miami competition and, as writer Lynette Zilio commented in the Miami Herald, “Last was certainly not least at 2009 Talent Quest Miami* finale. Pianist and composer Rachel Currea, the last of 12 performers, took home $500 and the opportunity to showcase her work after blowing the judges away with her original piece, ‘Hear Me Now’.” ~Lynette Zilio – The Miami Herald (Jul 28, 2009)

Made In Chile 2 Art Exhibition with Victor Mahana and Carla Fache at Amy Alonso Gallery 2/26/10

“MADE IN CHILE 2” ART EXHIBITION
Fache Arts & Amy Alonso Gallery are pleased to announce Art Exhibition: “MADE IN CHILE 2”, featuring Chilean artists Victor Mahana and Carla Fache.
Victor Mahana and Carla Fache, two Chilean young painters, show us through their paintings that behind the Andes Mountains talent remains and evolve through textures, strokes and technique.
Abstract and surrealism, defined by the artists vision and their unique technique, are the gateway to a journey of imagination and vibration you will experience in this exhibition.
Captured in silence, the vivid energy that flows from their paintings brings to our mind the verses of the Chilean Nobel Poet, Pablo Neruda: “I like you when you are silent because you are as though absent…”, as their work penetrates the viewer minds and souls.
The right use of light, shadow and color, and the relationship between the unconscious and conscious, surreal and abstract, puts us on a ride towards visual harmony and sense provocation.

THE ARTISTS
“…My painting has always been the vision of vivid dreams. In simple words, I define it as figurative, concrete, detailed images of an unconscious, symbolic and irrational world. My work stands in that threshold, it is the paradox of two incompatible and sometimes opposite worlds: The real (the way of represent things) with the unreal (the subject of representation)…”
-Victor Mahana.

“…My imagination travels to non-existing dimensions that I best describe through a process of layering. When I paint, I feel as if I am hypnotized by colors and textures, all of which will create soft, thin layers that hide or reveal a mark of an unspoken feeling, emotion, or thought…”
-Carla Fache.

{Editor’s Note: This is a VERY exciting opportunity for everyone interested in the arts in south Florida. ANYone can apply. And the application process is neither complex nor daunting. The Knight Foundation has done a wonderful job of making it simple. I absolutely encourage everyone to look into this and submit your ideas.}

Knight Arts Challenge Opens Contest

Deadline March 15
The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation is now accepting applications for the Knight Arts Challenge, a community-wide contest that aims to bring South Florida together through the arts. Have a big idea for the local cultural scene? Submit it through March 15 at KnightArts.org.
It’s your turn to inspire our growing local arts scene.

If you have a great idea in the arts, let us know. Take part in a community rising to new levels of artistic achievement and global recognition. In the last two years, 51 ideas were funded. Is this your year?

John S. and James L. Knight Foundation is seeking ideas and innovation in the arts from nonprofits, companies and individuals. There are three simple rules:
1. The idea is about arts.
2. The project takes place in or benefits South Florida.
3. You find other funding to match the Knight Foundation grant.

So far, 51 individual artists, small nonprofits and the area’s largest institutions have won funding from the challenge. The Knight Arts Challenge’s application is designed to be simple to attract a wide range of applicants, including those who are not traditional foundation grant seekers.

A video produced by Soul Of Miami with some of the 2009 winners. Knight Foundation’s Dennis Scholl opens the video with a very good description of the program

In this sexy, trippy, psychological creep-show, a gay porn star named Mark Anton mysteriously disappears after he decides to leave the business at the height of his fame in 1995. Rumors about murder and blackmail swirl for 14 years, until Michael, a young New York writer researching a book about pornography, decides to investigate the strange events. An underground video is unearthed that might be a snuff film capturing the missing star’s bizarre – and perhaps supernatural – vanishing act. Michael’s sleuthing brings back the same paranormal energy that destroyed Mark, turning his own life into a surreal, voyeuristic nightmare.

Meanwhile, in Los Angeles, porn “brand” Matt Stevens decides he wants to direct a film about the disappearance of the missing star and feverishly pens a screenplay based on his own disturbing dreams (a “porno thriller in three acts”) called The Mark Anton Story. He’s given the green light by his skeptical producer, as long as he plays the starring role. The production is obviously cursed, as reality and fantasy blur while Matt relives Mark’s final days in the industry.

Warning: There are no (unsimulated) pornographic scenes in this movie. But it does have a twisty, clever script; ample male nudity; genuine suspense; a hot cast and plenty of mindfucking. Plus a mysterious ring, a menacing stranger and a rent boy who accepts personal checks. – (synopsis courtesy of Frameline)

The Blacks Annual Gala at at the Fontainebleau 2/27/10

From Michael Capponi
I want to invite you to come to an amazing party, The Blacks Annual Gala on Saturday, February 27th benefiting at-risk kids in need and Project Medishare in Haiti — two very important causes that are close to my heart and concern.
Your purchase of a table or ticket goes directly to these causes.
Lea and Roy Black, our hosts always seem to top themselves every year and this year will be no different. We have a great list of celebrities attending, incredible auction items, exquisite boutiques and many more surprises.
This year’s event will be held on February 27th at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach.
You may also know, that I have been extremely touched by the disaster caused by the earthquake in Haiti, following a personal trip that I made there that changed my life forever. When I went to Lea to express my distress at what I had seen in Haiti, and brainstorm what we could do, she immediately generously offered to donate to this cause and also make a portion of the proceeds from your attendance and other items benefit Project Medishare, founded by Dr. Barth Green, who will also be recognized at the gala.
You have the opportunity to earmark your ticket if you would like to specify directly who your donation is for.
Either way, your money will be going to two great causes. Help us help Haiti and kids in need right here in our backyard. It is not too late to be part of something great and change a life.
I hope to see you February 27th at the Fontainebleau. Tickets and tables are selling fast!

Opening Reception: Fri., Feb. 26, 6-9 pm
Haitian-born, Miami-based contemporary artist Adler Guerrier will create a new site-specific exhibition in the Center’s main gallery that will explore the effects of geography, politics, and history on Hollywood, Florida, and nearby environs. Guerrier’s multi-dimensional exhibition will employ a variety of media, including photography, drawings, sculpture, and video, to express a “psycho-geographic” narrative of a distinctive cityscape that includes an urban center, quiet neighborhoods, and a lively beachfront. Guerrier finds inspiration in the simple act of walking city streets, which he describes as a “political and poetic act.”

New Miami On Stage series begins with a free concert by Anabel and Ke o Ke 3/6/10

New “Miami On Stage” Series
Presenting South Florida Performing Artists
Begins Saturday March 6 With A Free Concert By Anabel & Ke o Ke

A community’s culture is created by those who live and work there. Miami already has a homegrown, exciting contemporary performing arts scene, but it can only continue to grow if area artists have high-quality, public showcases that expose their talent to South Florida audiences. The new Miami On Stage project will do just that by presenting locally produced work on a regular basis. It will feature some of the best of Miami’s performing artists in a series that takes place in Miami Beach’s North Beach neighborhood, beginning March 6 with a free “tropical fusion” concert by Anabel & Ke o Ke at the North Beach Open Space Park. Miami On Stage is produced by FUNDarte, one of the South Florida’s most adventurous and successful presenters of alternative culture, particularly with a Latin flavor.

Singer Anabel is based in South Florida but was born in Cuba to a musical family. She has been a member of such groups as Salsabrava and Retrozon, as well as pursuing her solo career as an interpreter of diverse musical styles, including salsa, bolero and son. Since 2005 Anabel has been based in South Florida and led her own group, Ke o Ke, showcasing her unique fusion style. She has shared the stage with musicians such as Willy Chirino. Albita Rodriguez and Cachao. This first Miami On Stage concert, just steps away from the ocean in a beautiful outdoor setting, begins at 4:00 pm as the sun begins to go down, and promises to be a hip-shaking musical journey through contemporary Latin musical genres. It is co-presented with the City of Miami Beach as part of its Arts in the Parks program.

“We are so pleased to be able to launch our new, annual Miami On Stage series this year, and provide a professional venue for contemporary, regional performing artists who the general public here is often not exposed to, “ says Ever Chavez, Executive Director of FUNDarte. More information about the upcoming Anabel concert, which is free and does not require a ticket, and the entire series, can be found online at www.fundarte.us or by contacting FUNDarte at info@fundarte.us or (305) 316-6165. North Beach Open Space Park’s entrance is at 81 Street and Collins Avenue.

Miami On Stage will continue on the first Saturday of each month, through June of this year. April 3rd will feature the great timba band Tiempo Libre at North Beach’s Byron Carlyle Theater with the Miami premiere performance of their Bach in Havana, a salsa meets Classical music mash-up based on the CD of the same name, which this year was nominated for a Grammy Award. Tickets on Sale Now!

In addition to each Saturday’s featured performance, there will be free tie-in events throughout the week in the North Beach neighborhood, including panel discussions with the artists, special programs for youth and outdoor activities. These will include free yoga classes on the beach Mondays and Fridays at 7:00 am at Ocean Terrace and 73 Street, as well as a Farmer’s market in Normandy Isle Circle Saturdays from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm.

The Heavy Pets (THP) are an American band whose contagious vibe blends rhythm and blues, jazz-funk and reggae fusion with homegrown rock and roll. Called “a living, breathing, force of nature” by Dan Sweeny of Relix magazine, THP are known for powerhouse performances spiked with hot electric licks and multi-climactic instrumental solos, as well as for their masterful acoustic acumen. In 2007, the group became an instant Sirius radio sensation with the release of their acclaimed double-disc debut album, Whale, driven by hit tracks “Operation of Flight” and “Sleep.” Major festival darlings, THP have taken the stage at Bonnaroo, moe.down, Langerado, New Orleans Backbeat Jazzfest, and their namesake PetZoo, a two-day, multi-band festival that draws hordes of Pets devotees to Bucks County, PA, to feast on the headliners’ live alchemy. www.theheavypets.com.

The Closest Farthest Away at the Byron Carlyle Theatre on Miami Beach 3/11-13/10

MIAMI LIGHT PROJECT, CENTRO CULTURAL ESPAÑOL(CCE) AND FUNDARTE PRESENT THE US PREMIERE OF THE CLOSEST FARTHEST AWAY
(below information in spanish)
Miami Light Project, Centro Cultural Español (CCE) and FUNDartre prosily present the US premiere of the multi media theatre work The Closest Farthest Away March 11-13, 2010 at the Byron Carlyle Theatre on Miami Beach.

The Closest Farthest Away (La Entranable Lejania) is the first of its kind – a multi-media theater piece created by filmmakers, theater artists, and musicians from the US and Cuba. Using cinema and live performance to cross the impossible boundaries that keep the US and Cuba apart; multi-channel video installation is projected against live actors to create a dramatic metaphor for the impossibility of exchange between two countries. Tapping into the physical presence of live performance and the defiance of space and time that is cinema, an impossible world is created-one in which Cuban and American performers exist together on the same stage.

Called “A groundbreaking hybrid work of film and theatre… incorporating a beautiful, nearly holographic interaction between Cuban actors on film and American actors on stage.” by American Theater Magazine, The Closest Farthest Away had its world premiere at the Havana Film Festival in December 2009.

The Closest Farthest Away is the first of its kind — a process-driven social and artistic experiment between Americans and Cubans to create a story that reflects contemporary ideas from multiple points of view. The collaborative process is interdisciplinary in approach where the artists from every medium contribute their ideas to the whole. The script was co-written by playwrights, filmmakers, composers, and theater artists from both countries and the film involved three directors and a bi-national crew of over 40 people working together in different languages. An ongoing inquiry into the mystery of this multi-faceted exploration occurred throughout one year of conversations over the internet and in person between artists in Los Angeles, Miami, and Havana.

The Closest Farthest Away was created by composer Sage Lewis whose work as a composer and sound designer for live performance, animation, and video has been featured at venues such as the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and the REDCAT and holds an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts and a BA from the Oberlin Conservatory in Music Composition. It is directed by Los Angeles based theatre director Chi-wang Yang is a Los Angeles-based theater director and digital media artist. Committed to physical performance and interdisciplinary collaboration, his work synthesizes stage, media, and technology. His work has been featured at REDCAT (Los Angeles), New York International Fringe Festival, the Edinburgh International Festival Fringe, Time-Based Arts Festival (Portland), and the Platform International Animation Festival. He is a recipient of the 2006 Princess Grace Award for Theater Directing. Raúl Pérez Ureta, the award winning Cuban Cinematographer has shot over 40 features and shorts around the world.

Rachel Currea Grand Winner of Talent Quest Miami A Piano Recital Showcase 2/27/10

Join Us on Saturday, February 27th at 8pm
when Arts at St Johns presents
pianist/composer, Rachel Currea’s
“A Piano Recital Showcase”
featuring original compositions and classical favorites
at Arts at St Johns, 4760 Pine Tree Drive, Miami Beach, FL 33140

Excerpt from Examiner article by George Leposky 2009:
“The audience at Rachel Thomas Currea’s recent piano concert heard a truly remarkable program, comprising her own compositions interspersed with classics spanning the centuries from Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757) through Frederik Chopin (1810-1849) to George Gershwin (1898-1937).

Although Currea describes herself as a New Age pianist and composer, her own music springs from classical roots and draws upon her formal education, which includes bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music from the University of Miami. Yet, there’s nothing formalistic about her music.

In remarks at the beginning of the concert, Currea explained that she composes music to describe her feelings andexperiences, justassomepeoplewritediariesinwords.” (read full article here)

Acura ZDX 7 City Launch Party kicks off in Miami at the W Hotel 2/25/10

ACURA ZDX REDEFINES NEXT WITH SEVEN-CITY POP-UP EXHIBITION TOUR
FEATURING FASHION AND FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHER ERIK MADIGAN HECK

Private Launch Party at W Miami, February 25, 2010
Followed By Dallas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Washington D.C., New York City

Acura, the automotive luxury brand that has been setting the standard in automotive design and engineering for over two decades, will present their latest model, the all-new 2010 Acura ZDX four-door sports coupe, in Miami, Florida on Thursday, February 25, 2010 at the W South Beach at a private launch party. The event will mark the launch of a seven-city tour featuring the vehicle and the works of renowned photographer Erik Madigan Heck.

The Acura ZDX started as a forward-thinking design project, with Acura stylists allowed full creative freedom to execute their vision of a sophisticated, luxurious four-door sports coupe. This idea of creative freedom is also reflected in Erik Madigan Heck’s works – making the partnership between the artist and Acura a natural fit. At just 26-years-old, he is already an established force in fine art and fashion photography, having shot the collections of the world’s finest designers including Valentino Garavani, Christian Lacroix, Jean Paul Gaultier and Helmut Lang. Additionally, Erik Madigan Heck is the editor in chief and creative director of Nomenus Quarterly, a hybrid online/print publication that features the world’s most influential artists, institutions and fashion designers.

The exhibition will showcase Erik Madigan Heck’s photography amongst high concept art, sculptures, and video installations as a means of communicating the artistic vision behind the ZDX. The segment bending ZDX features stunning coupe-like styling with the added benefit of a commanding presence and flexible utility. The ZDX is the first vehicle to be styled from start to finish in the new Acura Design Studio in Torrance, CA, allowing exterior and interior designers to work closely together throughout the entire design process. Staying true to the original vision and sketches of the Acura design team, the ZDX features sensuous curves, deeply sculpted shoulders and strong character lines.

In creating the ZDX, the design team sought influence beyond the world of automotive luxury. Inspired by solar shades at the St. Regis in San Francisco, the panoramic glass roof has a power-operated sunshade that is made of a special mesh material that helps filter UV light. Even the natural staining of the inside of Napa Valley wine barrels led to a new color option for the interior leather.

The Acura ZDX Launch Parties Featuring Erik Madigan Heck will travel from Miami to Dallas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Washington, D.C., culminating in New York City on April 8, 2010.

Pecha Kucha Global Day For Haiti to be held at the Wolfsonian-FIU 2/20/10

PECHA KUCHA GLOBAL DAY FOR HAITI TO BE HELD AT THE WOLFSONIAN–FIU FEBRUARY 20, 2010
Global Conference Will Be Streamed Live From 276 Cities Around the World

In a matter of seconds, thousands of lives and dreams were destroyed in Haiti on January 12, 2010. Following the tragedy, aid came from many quarters, in all shapes and forms. On Saturday, February 20 from 4-6pm The Wolfsonian–Florida International University will join the PechaKucha global community and the Miami Chapter of Architecture for Humanity (AFH) to assist in the rebuilding of Haiti by taking part in a continuous 24-hour edition of PechaKucha Night.

PechaKucha Night was devised in Tokyo on February 2003 as an event for young designers to meet, network, and showcase their work in public. It has turned into a massive celebration, with events happening in hundreds of cities around the world, inspiring creatives worldwide. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of “chit chat”, it rests on a presentation format that is based on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds. It’s a format that makes presentations concise, and keeps things moving at a rapid pace.
Kicking off the series of events at the SuperDeluxe in Tokyo, where PechaKucha was first conceived seven years ago, the presentation wave will travel eastward, with cities presenting one after the other. Crossing all times zones and cultures, the events will be streamed live online and then finish in Tokyo the following day. Presentations are already being prepared, some intended to offer hope and encouragement through stories of past disaster relief projects; others as simple inspiration by showing the power of creative thinking. All of the 2,000 presentations generated from the one-day event—in what could be the world’s biggest single-day globally distributed conference—will be posted on the PechaKucha website, where visitors will also be able to make monetary donations to the project. In organizing this event, PechaKucha intends to not only raise funds through pledges from host cities and contributions from individuals, but also illustrate the power of innovative minds, creative passion, and most of all, sharing ideas for change and sustainability.

The event, which takes place at The Wolfsonian, is co-presented with PechaKucha Miami and AFH. There is a minimum ten dollar donation per person requested and all proceeds will go to AFH’s Earthquake Reconstruction in Haiti project. AFH operates globally, and was instrumental in getting projects built after the Indian Ocean tsunami and Hurricane Katrina. The design costs for the new buildings in Haiti have been already covered so all donations will go directly toward the construction of much needed schools, health clinics and community structures.

For more information about the event, visit http://www.pecha-kucha.org/pechakucha-for-haiti

About PechaKucha
PechaKucha was conceived in Tokyo in February 2003 by architects Mark Dytham and Astrid Klein as an event where young designers could meet, network and show their work in public. Over time, it has evolved into a massive celebration of creativity, with events regularly being held in over 270 cities including Miami. Last year, more than 6,000 presentations were hosted at over 600 PechaKucha events. Drawing its name from the Japanese phrase for the sound of conversation (“chit chat”), the PechaKucha format is simple—20 images x 20 seconds—and designed to keep presentations concise and moving at a rapid pace.

‘Phenomenon,’ 56 feet long, 13’ and 6”, with 4 turbine engine that produce 12,000 horsepower, was built to break the world’s propelled speedboat record of 220.5 mph. It was created by engineers from Boeing, former US Naval architects, & world class professional power boat builders.

The magic of this prototypical vessel lies behind the story of famed restaurateur, Al Copeland Sr. who founded Popeyes Famous Fried Chicken & Biscuits Restaurants and Copeland’s Restaurants and was the former driver of the Popeyes Offshore race team. He was a six-time National Champion who popularized the sport of off-shore racing with actor Chuck Norris in their Popeyes/Diet Coke race boat.

Unfortunately, about two years into building Phenomenon, Al Copeland Sr. was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer known as Merkel Cell Carcinoma (MCC). Just eight months after the diagnosis, he passed away. At the time of his death, Al Copeland Sr. had two goals he wanted to accomplish: One to find a cure for MCC, and two to finish the boat in order to break the world record. A southern icon, Al Copeland’s memory lives on through his 52 restaurants, hotels, and comedy clubs throughout the US and his Foundation, which is dedicated to the eradication of Merkel Cell Carcinoma

Gallery Diet Opening Rachel Is 2/12/10

Rachel Perry Welty gathers the detritus of our complex social order, dismembering and reassembling it to create works of sculpture, video, photography, and drawing. The constant bombardment of imagery in our daily lives makes for a great loss of the self, a certain sense of disorder within ones own life, there are no boundaries between what we see, feel, and sense, and that which we are actually comprised of. A unifying constant irregularity that Rachel manipulates into neatly compartmentalized and ordered works.

Ms. Welty will be on residence in Miami with The Fountainhead. She has exhibited her work at the Museum of Art Ft. Lauderdale Florida, the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park in Lincoln Massachusetts, the Drawing Center in New York City, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Barbara Krakow Gallery in Boston, and the Yancey Richardson Gallery in New York. This will be Ms. Welty’s first solo exhibition in Miami, Florida.

About Gallery Diet:
Diet represents five emerging and mid-career artists, Brian Burkhardt, Charley Friedman, Richard Höglund, Abby Manock, and Daniel Milewski. Their work is exhibited alongside that of an invitational series of artists from around the world.

In 1986 Project: New Born was joined by the Infantry, an offspring group of young energetic men and women, dedicated to the same goals and pledged to support the annual funding necessary to provide the best possible care for the babies. The organization has raised large sums of money and has pledged to continue to do so! Fund raising occurs through annual dues, through an annual luncheon and gala as well as other events, and through plaques in honor of or in memory of family or friends, which are displayed outside the Project: New Born Neonatal Special Care Center.

Invitation to the opening of Basics at Calix Gustav Gallery 2/13/10

CALIX GUSTAV GALLERY UNVEILS NEW EXHIBITION “BASICS” IN WYNWOOD

WHAT/WHO: Calix Gustav Gallery is pleased to announce the launch of its newest exhibition “Basics,” showcasing works by classically trained emerging artists who utilize contemporary subject matters. Hosted by Miami Art Guide and coinciding with Wynwood’s monthly Art Walk, Calix Gustav Gallery will host an opening reception on Saturday, February 13, 2010 from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Guests will enjoy live entertainment by Florida International University’s School of Music and Miami Symphony, as well as complimentary cocktails courtesy of V Georgio Vodka.

Between the various artists featured, all are united by the underlying theme, “basics,” or the connection with one’s being through the exploration of the basics of life: solitude, the subconscious, self-expression and revelations, as well as minimalism. Yvonne Cordoba explores esoteric themes – the most notable being solitude – which she portrays as a necessary means through which to achieve self-awareness. Rising talent, Max A. Kraushaar uses reflections of his own subconscious to create what he calls “Expressive Surrealistic Mixed Media.” Cuban artist, Eric Torriente presents works from his latest portfolio releases Outbound Tales and The Last Glaciation, expressionistic depictions of old stories and past revelations. Lastly, Agustín de Llanos presents an abstract series of clean, minimalist, elegant works that play with light, dimension, textures and mediums, which he calls “shadows of absences.”

For more information on Calix Gustav Gallery, please visit www.calixgustav.com. Events are open to the public – RSVP to calix@taraink.com or 305.864.3434 ext. 157.

Miami 21 ‘Town Hall’ Information Series with guest speaker Francisco Garcia Iglesias – Part I
February 11, 2010 6:00PM-8:00PM
-Metro 1 Properties, Inc. – 120 NE 27th Street Suite 200 – Miami, FL 33137

The Metro 1 Green Building Resource Center invites you to learn more about Miami 21 with guest speaker Francisco Garcia Iglesias. The presentation will discuss Miami 21 in a two-part series covering the topics below. Guests are welcome to ask questions and voice opinions in this ‘town hall’ series.

About Miami 21: Miami has been engaged over the last five years in a wholesale restructuring of its development regulations. The result of these efforts, a code and development plan named Miami 21 was approved in September, 2009 and will complete the adoption process in 2010. The adoption of Miami 21 signals a drastic break with Euclidian zoning. Euclidian or use-based zoning has held sway over American development for nearly 90 years; it has resulted in the wholesale deterioration of urban centers and brought about the dominance of the suburb as the default housing habitat for Americans.

Miami 21 can be termed diversely a form-based code, a transect-based code, a sequential growth code or an infrastructure-based code. Most importantly, it departs from legalistic concepts of buffering and use segregation and promotes sustainable development through the implementation of planning well established principles:
– Walkability and pedestrian oriented development.
– Neighborhood-based urban structure as opposed to a corridor-based suburban structure
– Integration of complementary uses and densification of areas properly served by public transit
– Gradual transition between development intensities to generate harmony and maintain property value
– Qualitative evaluation of development according to sustainability criteria requiring compliance with well-established environmental principles
– Predictability of development parameters by using net lot area and gross floor area based formulae as opposed to gross floor area and net floor area
– Reduction of bureaucratic processes by reducing reliance on public hearing / adversarial permitting

Miami 21 is the first city-wide development code to adopt this methodology in a major urban area. The creation, design and implementation of Miami 21 have become a nation-wide case study, a precedent of sustainable regulation intended as model and precedent for American cities.

The Concept
Journelle is a new breed of lingerie store, designed for sophisticated women who share a taste for beautiful, quality under things. Launched in 2007, Journelle quickly became one of the world’s top lingerie stores earning highest honors from Zagat and becoming a destination for lingerie lovers near and far. We are especially proud of our serene store environment, our tastefully curated lingerie selection and our warm, witty team of lingerie connoisseurs.

The Founder
Claire Chambers, 29, is the founder and CEO of Journelle. After a successful career in management consulting, Claire’s love of lingerie and entrepreneurial spirit led her to the fragmented lingerie retail market. Passionate about bringing the momentum and excitement of fashion to the lingerie world, Claire has been featured as an expert on InStyle, Nylon and ‘Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style.’ In 2008, she was ranked on Inc.com’s “30 under 30” list of entrepreneurs. Claire lives and works in Manhattan and Miami, where she dreams of someday having a closet large enough for all her lingerie. We just call that her stores!

Play Work Group & Art Commerce team up to produce shorts for Journelle
NYC-based Play Work Group has completed 3 short films for Journelle. Somewhere between advertising and art project the films were directed by Fashion Photographer Jamie Isaia who is represented by Art and Commerce also in NYC. The History of Al Copeland Jr. and Phenomenon
· The prototypical vessel was created by famed restaurateur, Al Copeland Sr., the founder of Popeyes Famous Fried Chicken & Biscuits Restaurants and Copeland’s Restaurants and a former driver and owner of the Popeyes Offshores race team from 1980-1990
· Unfortunately, about two years into building Phenomenon, Al Copeland Sr. was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer known as Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC), a rare and aggressive form of cancer. Just eight months after the diagnosis, Al Copeland Sr. died of the disease
· At the time of his death, Al Copeland Sr. had but two goals he wanted to accomplish: One to find a cure for the rare cancer, and two to finish the boat in order to break the world record

About Al Copeland Investments
· The ACI family of companies includes 30 restaurants, hotels and comedy clubs throughout the US, including Copeland’s Diversified Food and Seasonings, Copeland’s of New Orleans, Copeland’s Cheesecake Bistro, and Copeland’s Social City, among others. Behind the Scenes of SoBe W&F with FIU School of Hospitality at the South Beach Wine and Food Festival 2/25-28/10

South Beach Wine & Food Festival,
Feb. 25-28, 2010
with FIU School of Hospitality students as your guide.

Over 1000 FIU students are involved in every aspect of the event – from serving student made wine & beer to soliciting restaurants for the Grand Tastings to making and keeping the event Green, to sponsor fulfillment, logistics as it relates to loading in and breaking down to prepping, working side-by-side cooking for such illustrious chefs as Bobby Flay, Michelle Bernstein, Lidia Bastianich, David Burke, Scott Conant, Laurent Tourandel, Alfred Portale as well as celebrity chefs such as Rachael Ray, Paula Deen, Michael Symon, among others for a variety of events including Bubble Q BBQ, Best of the Best, and the Grand Tasting tents.

The students play an integral and a pivotal role in producing the nation’s largest such event in N. America, with over 55,000 tickets sold over the 4 day weekend in Feb. Almost $2 mil. dollars was raised last year, with $400,000 dollars earmarked for student scholarships.

Culinary convergence benefits FIU School of Hospitality at FIU annual fund raiser, Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival

When the greatest names in the restaurant industry converge for FIU School of Hospitality annual fundraiser: 2010 Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival, presented by Food and Wine Magazine, February 25 – 28, 2010 it will not only be for good food and good fun, it was also for a good cause: Florida International University’s School of Hospitality and Tourism Management. More than $2 million dollars has been raised for FIU School of Hospitality for student scholarships, and to enhance the experience of students by investing in program, faculty and facility enhancement.

For the 2010 Festival celebrity chefs and personalities such as Rachael Ray, Emeril Lagasse, Ming Tsai, Paula Dean, Bobby Flay, Michael Lomonaco joined famed South Florida based chefs such as Michelle Bernstein, Kenny Lyon, Michael Schwartz, Jonathan Eismann and Allen Susser – to name just a handful of participants — to once again position Miami-Dade County as the culinary capital of the world during the festival. Everyone is drawn to the event, not just for the celebration, but also for the opportunity to benefit one of the leading hospitality programs of its kind in the world.

Formerly known as the “Florida Extravaganza”, proceeds from the South Beach Wine & Food Festival benefit FIU’s School of Hospitality. Over the past 10 years, over a $6 million dollars has been raised to enhance the students experience at the School of Hospitality by expanding the School of Hospitality Teaching Restaurant and the Southern Wine & Spirits Beverage Management Center. Hundreds of thousands of dollars were set aside for student scholarships.
In addition to lending their services to the cause of benefiting FIU’s School of Hospitality, many chefs worked with numerous students individually, offer the students an unparalleled experience. At this year’s Festival, students will be paired with, in a mentorship style relationship, the following chefs: John Besh (Restaurant August, New Orleans), Scott Conant/Michael Priolo (Scarpetta/ Miami Beach), Todd English (Olives, NYC), Adam Perry Lang (Daisy May’s BBQ, NYC), Emeril Lagasse (Emeril’s/New Orleans), Masaharu Morimoto (Morimoto, NYC), Tom Neely (Neely’s Bar-B-Que, Memphis), Alfred Portale/John Suley (Gotham Steak, Miami Beach), Sue Zemanick (Gatreau’s, New Orleans), among others.
“The students of FIU are the real winners of this festival. They provide tireless support for the four-day weekend of events while reaping indispensable real world industry experience,” says Joan Remington, Interim Dean, FIU School of Hospitality.
FIU Hospitality Management senior AJ Mindermann, assistant culinary manager at the 2009 festival, knows first hand the value of working with industry leaders in a real-world experience. “The experience is priceless,” Mindermann said. “You can’t put a number on it. I got so many internship opportunities from chefs last year. The networking is terrific. It’s probably one of the biggest career-jumpers there is.”
Having just completed his second year in a leadership role at the Festival, Arthur was honored with the Barilla Best FIU Student Chef Award, and a $1500 cash prize. Barilla established this award to recognize students at FIU’s School of Hospitality and who exhibit their commitment to and passion for the culinary arts.
Hundreds of other students benefit from real-world experience at the Festival. Experiences range from fulfilling thousands of ticket orders to restaurant solicitation, sponsorship fulfillment to meeting and greeting guests at myriad activities throughout the annual four-day festival. Overall, some 850 Hospitality majors – most with excellent internship experience already under their belts – worked in a variety of key capacities both before and during the festival.

“I hear comments like ‘the experience changed my life’,” said FIU Chef-Instructor and South Beach Wine & Food Festival Culinary Director, Michael Moran. “You don’t expect to go to school and have a teacher say that there’s a field trip to cook barbecue for 500 people.”

It’s little wonder that so many famed names are willing to lend their time and expertise to the festival and to FIU students. Hospitality and tourism industry executives from around the world visit the school annually to interview and hire graduates for key management-track positions in the vast array of fields in which FIU’s students are prepared. Today many of the school’s 9,000 graduates hold prominent positions in the hospitality industry around the Western Hemisphere, Europe and Asia.

Students at FIU’s School of Hospitality are highly sought-after for key reasons. One is the comprehensive curriculum that includes tracks for Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Hospitality Management, Executive Master of Science in Hospitality Management Degree Programs, PhD in Business Administration as well as Certificate Programs in various Hotel, Restaurant, Hospitality, Travel and Tourism specializations. Over 100 courses and 35 expert faculty members focus exclusively on hospitality and tourism management including finance, law, beverage management, culinary arts and hotel operations.

Students are required to work 1,000 hours in the hospitality industry and then complete a 300-hour internship. Upon graduation, students are prepared to compete for top positions in every aspect of the hospitality industry. To date, the School’s graduates have a 100% career placement record.

FIU’s excellence was one reason student Caroline Karlberg chose it when she decided to leave the world of finance for logistics management.

“I wanted real, hands-on experience and that was definitely something FIU’s School of Hospitality, offered in addition to its programs and staff,” Karlberg said. “I can’t believe this, but last year at this time, I was a financial analyst in New York City. And this year I am a graduate student at FIU School of Hospitality, working as a member of the Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival’s logistics team, the largest such event in the country.” Caroline, assistant to SoBe W&F Logistics Manager Susan Gladstone, is also Student Associate Coordinator, working with her team of students to place 1000 students in various jobs at the festival.

“And what I have learned is unbelievable: just the amount of moving parts and people it takes to put together such an event is mind-blowing. I have never been on this side of an event, and I had no idea what goes into the back-end. Working this event has helped me appreciate all special events.”

“We provide our students the opportunity to get their foot in the door in the hospitality field of their choice,” said Dean Remington, FIU School of Hospitality. “Our students work on the ground, having real life experiences while making important contacts with industry leaders. It is gratifying to the faculty to know that international hospitality companies and corporations are selecting our students.”

It is also reason why, year after year, top figures in the industry are eager to help contribute to FIU’s School of Hospitality.

Chef-Instructor Leads Students in the Intricacies and Delicacies of Putting on FIU’s Famed Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival

When FIU chef-instructor Michael Moran puts on a party, he wants only the best at his side. Take the high-profile Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival, presented by Food and Wine Magazine, the wildly popular, FIU-co-sponsored event that takes place from Feb. 25-28, 2010. As chef and culinary coordinator he’ll rub elbows with some of the biggest names in the industry, among them Food Network chefs Emeril Lagasse and Bobby Flay. It’s his own students, however, that Moran considers critical to success.

“It really is about finding a core of people who have this tremendous passion,” Moran says of the hundreds or so undergraduates who sign on for his course in “quantity food production.” In addition to other chores, the students take direct responsibility for getting ready all of the mea consumed during the 2009 Bubble Q BBQ: 1800 pounds of pork, 1500 pounds of beef filet, 1000 pounds of chicken, 1200 pounds of fish, 800 pounds of cabbage, and turning out several hundred pounds of nouveau potato salad, cole slaw and other side dishes for arguably the festival’s most glamorous attraction: the Friday night, champagne-drenched barbecue for over 3,000.

It took 3500 man hours to prepare 22,500 portions of food served to 3400 people attending the 2009 Bubble Q BBQ. Ordered were three tons of food for the 25 participating chefs, each preparing 900 portions.

The prep work takes place in the Miami Beach Convention Center’s hot and cold commercial kitchens, after which the food is packed into four refrigerated, 65-foot 18-wheelers and delivered to the fashionable Delano hotel on Miami Beach . There the students assist a veritable Who’s Who of professional chefs from around the country as they help cook and serve the ultimate outdoor feast.

Overall, some 850 Hospitality majors—most with excellent internship experience already under their belts—will work in a variety of key capacities both before and during the festival, from fulfilling thousands of ticket orders to meeting and greeting guests at myriad activities throughout the long weekend, among them wine and food seminars and a celebrity golf tournament.

For the most part, Chef Moran is educating not just would-be chefs, but the future managers of restaurant groups, hotel chains, cruise lines and related companies—this is a business school, after all. Moran wants to make sure his charges know how to bake chocolate chip cookies, prepare relatively simple dishes like arroz con pollo and, by the end of the semester, quickly build an entire dinner around ingredients he hands them in class. His self-stated goal: “I have to take away the intimidation of the kitchen.” Come festival time, they’re usually ready for anything.

But it’s not just cooking the veteran chef covers. “I’m teaching the whole individual,” explains Moran, who trains students how to work together, respond quickly to commands and generally get comfortable with the frenetic pace often associated with meeting the public’s expectations.
At the 2009 Festival, students were paired with in a mentorship style the following chefs: John Besh (Restaurant August, New Orleans), Kenny Callaghan (Blue Smoke, NYC), Todd English (Olives, NYC), Roger Herring (Socca/Chicago), Elizabeth Karmel (Hill Country/NYC) Adam Perry Lang (Daisy May’s BBQ, NYC), Emeril Lagasse (Emeril’s/New Orleans), Tim Love (Lonesome Dove Western Bistro/Ft. Worth), Missy Robbins (A Voce/NYC), Aaron Sanchez (Centrico/NYC), among others.
Chef Moran who has an established relationship with Miami’s Daily Food Bank, was able to, with his team, recover 6495 pounds of food from the 2009 Bubble Q, Burger Bash and the Grand Tasting demos, which translates to 38,970 meals. “This is truly incredible!!” exclaimed Chef Moran. “So much more than double last year. I’m proud that the food was not wasted, and that so many people were able to eat their fill of fine home-made food.”

Almost $2 million dollars was raised for FIU School of Hospitality to award student scholarships, and to enhance the experience of students by investing in program, faculty and facility enhancement.

With partner Southern Wine & Spirits of Florida, a division of the country’s largest beverage distributor, FIU presents the Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival annually as a fundraiser in support of its Teaching Restaurant Program and the Southern Wine & Spirits Beverage Management Center, both located on FIU’s Biscayne Bay Campus in North Miami . The event also provides an opportunity for the nationally ranked School and its students to contribute to South Florida ‘s reputation as a world-class travel destination and a great place to live.

“We’re part of the community. We want to make the community more successful,” Moran says. “One of the things we can bring to the table is the planning and creation of an environment to have a great time.”

Diana Lowenstein Fine Arts Jose Bechara Reception 2/13/10

DIANA LOWENSTEIN FINE ARTS
JOSE BECHARA
Pássaros geométricos e pelo menos um pássaro rectangular!

Reception will take place at the gallery on February 13th.
Exhibitions will be on view through March 6th, 2010.

Jose Bechara was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he studied at the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage. His work has been exhibited widely in North and South America, as well as Europe. In this most recent exhibition of his work, Pássaros geométricos e pelo menos um pássaro rectangular! (Geometric Birds, a Rectangular Bird at Least), he continues to explore dualities. They remain traditional in that most are two-dimensional works of oil on canvas, yet contemporary in their incorporation and manipulation of rust as a medium. They include very rigid elements of geometry, but couple them with soft transitions of tones and colors. They can be very abstracted, while still referencing landscapes, figures and other elements.

UISUK BYEON, YOUNG CHO, JESSICA LABATTE & BRIANA SCHWEIZER
The Triumph of Patience

Materials transform over time. Like human bodies they disintegrate, collapsing, crumbling, and wearing away over the course of their existence. The artists in this exhibition investigate and capture the frailty of their respective materials, while also reworking and transforming them. Working in Chicago, a city with deep foundations in labor, these artists employ common materials as a means of transcendence. Their choices of materials, combined with exhaustive, often obsessive devotion to process, are contemplations on temporality, mortality, control and the transcendence of contemporary life.

BYEON CHO LABATTE SCHWEIZER

All four of these artists have recently graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago with an MFA. They have exhibited their work throughout the United States, as well as internationally. They bring together personal backgrounds and experiences cohesively while each maintains an individual focus, concept and aesthetic.

Si no existe el mas allá, la injusticia del pobre se prolonga eternamente
In Si no existe el mas allá, la injusticia del pobre se prolonga eternamente (If there is no afterlife, the injustice of the poor lingers perpetually), Colectivo MR addresses social issues such as discrimination and racism through a series of staged photographs. These portraits place a family from the Peruvian Andes, in their traditional dress, in settings throughout the wealthy districts of Lima. By doing so, the irony of their seemingly being out of place in their own country is evident. Colectivo MR is a collaboration between photographer Marina Garcia Burgos (Peru) and art critic Ricardo Ramon Jarne (Spain).

8 p.m.
Byron Carlyle Theater
500 71st St., Miami Beach
Tickets for Performance
on Friday, February 19
From the roiling imagination of Chilean writer-director Guillermo Calderón comes this politically charged, haunting drama about a near-future war in the Andes. Peppered with surprising doses of pitch-black comedy, Diciembre takes place in Santiago on Christmas Eve 2014 with the city besieged by Peruvian forces. Young soldier Jorge returns home on a 24-hour leave to celebrate the holiday with his pregnant twin sisters, who each have sharply different views on nationalism and the morality of war. One wants Jorge to defect, the other demands he return to the fight. Jorge, however, has his own take on the matter. Smartly produced by his dynamic Santiago-based company Teatro en el Blanco (“Theater on Target”), Calderón’s play strips away ostentatious theatrical conceit for us to hear clearly the terror knocking at the door. Featuring Paula Zúñiga, Trinidad González and Jorge Becker. Performed in Spanish with English supertitles.

Artists from over 35 U.S. states and Canada, were among the 1,230 applicants who submitted samples in mixed media, painting, photography, digital art, printmaking & drawing, watercolor, claywork, glass, fiber, jewelry & metalwork, sculpture and wood. Applicants included nearly 150 local artists.

“Our arts festival brings the most talented and creative artists from all over the world to Coconut Grove,” said Monty Trainer, president of the arts festival. “South Floridians have a great appreciation of the arts, and every year we are proud to welcome new artists who exhibit for the first time.”

Complementing the visual arts on display is the popular Culinary Pavilion which invites world-renowned chefs to prepare their famous dishes and explain their specialties. This year’s chefs will represent successful restaurants, hotels and authors from throughout South Florida.

Earlier this year, the Coconut Grove Arts Festival® presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida was named the top fine arts festival in the nation by Sunshine Artist Magazine. The Arts Festival was voted the best fine art show for the seventh year and remains the top fine art event in the history of the magazine’s 200 Best.

The 47th annual Coconut Grove Arts Festival® presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida will be held Presidents’ Day Weekend, February 13-15. Festival hours will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Admission to the Arts Festival is $10 per person, per day. Children 12 and under are free.

Residents of Coconut Grove in the 33133 zip code can enjoy the Festival at a special reduced admission of $5 (proof of residency required).

The Festival is produced by the Coconut Grove Art and Historical Association, Inc., a non-profit community organization under the direction of a board of directors and full-time staff. Proceeds from the annual event help to fund year-round arts programs.

ART ENCOUNTERS INTERSTICES BETWEEN LITERATURE, FILM AND GRAPHIC DESIGN stands on a sort of ritournelle where diverse creators visit and revisit a unique topic, becoming the show a tribute and a rereading of human ontological problematic questions.
The exhibition -which is part of the project Gráfica Latinoamericana 20/21- relies on masterpieces of the literature and cinema, now interpreted by the graphic design. The selected posters highlight by their conceptual rigor and the interplay with the clever metaphor and the ellipsis that incite the viewer to rebuild here and there, transforming the perceptive process into a ludic and vivid experience.
At the same time, the show pays tribute to the Latin American graphic design tradition, including a selection of artworks made by iconic artists which contributions are milestones of the poster history in the region.
