This exhibition by seven Cuban-American artists explore the spaces between two ethnic worlds and articulates in visual terms the everyday experiences commonly felt and perceived in culture.
Artists in the exhibition are Miguel Angel Baez, Julio Figueroa Beltran, Pablo Lazo, Juan Carlos Mirabal, Vicente Valdez Torres, Maria Valero and Carlos F. Wolff.

Accent Alternative Art Space is a not-for-profit art initiative spearheaded by Hispanic marketing and communications agency Accentmarketing. This creative piece of real estate is dedicated to non-commercially driven artists who fall outside of the mainstream Miami art scene. The alternative space will serve as a platform for their work- at no cost to them.

The venue will bring to light hidden talent and artwork outside of the mainstream focus of Miami’s art scene while bringing art to neighborhoods it is not currently prominent in. Killing and Salting, the non-profit’s premiere exhibit, will feature seven local Cuban-American artists’ work that visually captures the day-to-day, bi-cultural experiences unique to Miami.

The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University (FIU) will host the opening reception for four major exhibitions. These exhibitions take the visitor on a tour across the Americas and Caribbean: from Shaman artifacts of the Northwest Coast to works of art by Haitian artists to stunning photography in Mexico to the whimsical art of Volf Roitman.The opening reception will be Wednesday, May 26, 2010 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

TapTap: Celebrating The Art of Haiti- This exhibition is part of a larger project to contribute works lost in the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti and assist in the rebuilding of the island’s cultural and artistic heritage. The exhibition will feature the works by artists of the lost patrimony from The Frost Art Museum’s large collection of Haitian art.

Spiritual Healing – Shamans of the Northwest Coast is designed to illuminate the art associated with the Northwest Coast Native peoples’ healing practices. For countless centuries, tribes such as the Tlingit, Tsimshian and Haida believed that all nature is endowed with spirits which could manifest in the form of illness and disease. The shaman drives away illness using objects, such as masks, rattles and amulets. Represented on the objects are spirits which aid the shamans in healing. They embody the respect and fear generated by the shaman. Both historic and new objects representing those used in shamanic healing will be displayed. This exhibition is sponsored in part by Northern Trust and Williams-Sonoma.

Paul Strand in Mexico – These photographs provide a visual record of Paul Strand’s journey through Mexico from 1932-34 and his brief return visit in 1966. Today recognized as one of the great photographers of the twentieth century, Strand believed firmly in the power of art and social documentary. In Mexico, especially during his initial visit, he sought to chronicle what he thought of as the country’s essential character while fostering its revolutionary transformation through the tools of photography and filmmaking. Certainly, Strand found the Mexico he was looking for: a world of stark landscapes, baroque churches, religious sculptures, campesinos and indigenous and mestizo men, women, and children-a place charged with meaning and spirit, which he was determined to capture with his camera. The tension between reinforcing and questioning the ideological constructs associated with the “Mexican cultural revolution” of the 1920s and 1930s becomes apparent when we examine the full range of Strand’s Mexican photography. This exhibition is sponsored in part by the Mexican Consulate in Miami and is co-produced by the Aperture Foundation and Fundación Televisa. Support for the the Miami presentation of Paul Strand in Mexico is provided by the National Council for Culture and the Arts (CONACULTA), Mexico; the National Endowment for the Arts; and the Tinker Foundation.

Volf Roitman: From MADI to the Ludic Revolution – Volf Roitman: From MADI to the Ludic Revolution is a series of major works celebrating the 60-year-long career of Uruguayan painter, sculptor, architect, novelist, playwright, filmmaker, and humorist Volf Roitman. Samples of Roitman’s work from the ’50s to the present will be on view, including a splendid array of motorized, kinetic works of a humorous style. The exhibition will celebrate the Ludic, or playfulness and whimsical, which is the basis of his creations. His newest innovations include giant MADI banners and MADI lightboxes. Some say the letters MADI stand for Movimiento Artistico De Invencion or MAterialismo DIalectismo (Dialectical Materialism). The movement integrates complexity with playfulness by focusing on geometric shapes that spill out of the traditional frame, and articulated mobile structures. This exhibition is sponsored in part by Citizens Interested in Arts, Inc.

For the past four years, Noel has been doing Guest Solo exhibits on the Connoisseur Luxury Liners of Princess, Cunard, Holland American, and P&O, where he is represented by Global Fine Arts. Miami-Dade County Commissioner Joe A. Martinez (District 11) and The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum will host the seventh annual Creative Visions 2010 student art exhibition. The exhibition features talented artists from District 11 Miami-Dade County Public Schools, including elementary, middle and high school students. For the past seven years, hundreds of school aged children have participated in this unique arts competition.

Creative Visions 2010, an annual juried exhibition held in May at The Frost Art Museum, was conceived in 2004 to highlight the artistic achievements of K-12 children in District 11. It also honors the M-DCPS art teachers who promote the visual arts in our community. Elementary, middle and high school students enter two and three-dimensional art work and videos in this juried show. A panel of judges selects winners who will receive scholarship awards. This annual exhibition is the product of a unique partnership between The Frost Art Museum, the office of Commissioner Joe A. Martinez (District 11), the Miami-Dade Department of Cultural Affairs and Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Division of Life Skills- Art Education Program.

Crome Yellow, an exhibition featuring works of art by graduating Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) students from FIU’s School of Art + Art History. The BFA graduates will lead a tour of the gallery and discuss the concepts behind their works. Many of today’s internationally renowned artists first made their debuts at FIU’s student exhibitions, including Teresita Fernandez, María Martínez-Cañas and Monica Lopez de Victoria of the TM Sisters. Crome Yellow will be on view from April 23 through May 9, 2010.

The University of Miami Lowe Art Museum will greet spring with a faculty exhibition, featuring the internationally collected glass artist, Endowed Chair, and UM Art Department Professor William Carlson. The UM Faculty Exhibition, William Carlson: Aquila Non Capit Muscas (An Eagle Does Not Catch Flies) will be on view at the Lowe Art Museum from April 24 to June 6, 2010. On view through May 9, is the first of the yearly two-part student exhibitions, the Annual Juried Student Competition Exhibition.

One of the most important figures working in studio glass is Bill Carlson, who will have a one man show of his current work at the Lowe Art Museum on the UM campus, April 24-June 6, 2010.

Bill teaches glass at UM, is the former Chair of the Department of Art and Art History before becoming an Endowed Chair of the Arts at UM.

Example of Bill’s work can be seen when visiting the Palley Glass collection, one of the world’s best-known most comprehensive glass collections, as well as upon entering the Palley Pavilion, itself. Bill was commissioned by Myrna and Sheldon Palley to create a window.

The Palleys were also instrumental in developing the glass program at UM, and in bringing Carlson to Miami to head the Department.

Both the donation of the Palley Collection and Bill’s reputation as an artist and a teacher places UM in a unique position. The University has a specialty that doesn’t exist anywhere else in the SE.

One of the things that attracts Bill to glass is its potential for experimentation. “Glass art has an undetermined or open future. There’s not as much in the way of predictable expectation.”

A preview and reception for the juried student exhibition and Aquila Non Capit Muscas, will be held Friday, April 23 from 7-10 pm. The evening will be highlighted with a special lecture by William Carlson. A preview reception for the Annual Masters of Fine Arts Candidates Exhibition, on view from May 13 through June 6, is Thursday, May 12, 2010 from 7-9 pm. Both receptions are free and open to the public.

Considered among the most important figures in the studio glass movement, Carlson creates laminated sculptures that incorporate a variety of materials, ranging from glass of his own making to bits and bands of commercially produced safety glass and Vitrolite, to granite. His work addresses issues of interior space, geometry, texture, and color.

William Carlson, a recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship Award, his work is included in numerous museum collections around the world, including Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Cleveland Museum of Art, Corning Museum of Glass, Museum of Art & Design (formerly American Craft Museum) in New York, and the Hokkaido Museum of Art in Sapporo, Japan. The entrance to the Myrna and Sheldon Palley Pavilion for Contemporary Glass and Studio Arts at UM’s Lowe Art Museum features a site-specific glass installation by Carlson entitled Prõcellōsus (Sudden Storm).

William Carlson, an endowed UM Professor, received his MFA from Alfred University, New York State College of Ceramics. He has served as Professor of Art and Program Chair of Glass, Clay, Sculpture at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. His program at the University of Illinois was honored in 1988 by the Art Alliance for Contemporary Glass for its contributions to the contemporary glass movement.

He has also taught or developed programs at major craft education centers, including the Cleveland Institute of Art, Haystack Mountain School, Pilchuck Glass School, Penland School of Crafts and Appalachian Center for Crafts.

In 2003, Carlson joined the University of Miami College of Arts and Sciences as Professor and Chair of the Department of Art and Art History, and has successfully strengthened its programs in art history, ceramics, glass, graphic design, painting, printmaking, and sculpture.

Said Myrna Palley, “Bill is widely considered one of the most important figures in the studio glass movement, and has significantly impacted the contemporary art glass movement as both an artist and an educator. We are so proud to have him here in Miami: teaching, creating, and mentoring young artists.”

2010 Aesthetics & Values Exhibition
An art exhibition curated by the FIU Honors College Students

The Patricia & Philip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University (FIU) along with FIU’s Honors College students announced the featured artists for the fifth annual Aesthetics and Values Fine Art Exhibition (A&V). This event, free and open to the public, opens March 9, 2010 at The Frost Art Museum located at 10975 SW 17 Street, Miami, FL 33199, with opening reception to be held March 24, 2010 from 6 – 9 p.m.

“This is a wonderful collaboration between the Frost Art Museum and the Honors College students,” said Director Carol Damian. “Students are able to curate a show and learn how to work within the confines of a true operational museum.”

“Aesthetics & Values’ move to the Frost Art Museum is an opportunity and challenge for the student-curators. The museum setting offers greater exposure and a more formal environment for the exhibition. It, therefore, also creates higher expectations. The group of participating artists demonstrates that the student-curators have embraced this challenge,” Professor Bailly added.

The A&V 2010 exhibition will feature the works of Bhakti Baxter, Xavier Cortada, Guerra de la Paz, Richard Haden, Bert Rodriguez, Gerry Stecca, TM Sisters, Frances Trombly, Wendy Wischer, and Ricardo E. Zulueta. This year, several of the artists featured will be making works specifically for the exhibition.

“We will create a site-specific sculptural work inspired by the environment in which it will be displayed and a general consensus amongst the students and ourselves in which we agreed to produce a suitable piece that engages dialog with its surroundings. We invited the students to visit our studio to view finished work and discuss their curatorial choices in order to get a feel for their expectations and also for them to have a better understanding of our creative process, decision-making and the range of subjects we address. As a result we mutually concluded in developing a new work of art for this exhibit,” said internationally-acclaimed Guerra de la Paz.

The A&V students not only curate their exhibition, but they become immersed within the art community. The Aesthetics & Values 2010 exhibition is the culmination of an Honors College seminar, taught by artist and Honors College Fellow John Bailly, which examines the role visual art plays in the social and cultural dialogue of controversial issues. The annual exhibition provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate their resourcefulness and creativity through the research, curation, and organization of an on-campus exhibition of contemporary Miami artists.

“My participation in the Aesthetics and Values Exhibition Project has proven to be a wonderful experience in many ways. The energy and enthusiasm of the students is truly amazing and I always look forward to their unique insights into the artists, artwork and art community. This is a proven success story of providing an educational experience, integrating communities and initiating lasting connections,” said artist Wendy Wischer.

“Being a part of the Aesthetics & Values class is an amazing opportunity. Being able to work with Miami based artists and the Frost Art Museum curating such an exhibition while being a non-Art major is something that very few people have the privilege of doing and I am extremely glad I can be one of them,” said Lien Hernandez.

The A&V Exhibition has also garnered national recognition. Since 2007, A&V students have presented the project at the National Collegiate Honors Council Conference. After learning of A&V at NCHC, the University of Arkansas at Little Rock will be organizing their own Aesthetics and Values Exhibition in the Spring 2011.

This year the A&V show will host its opening reception during The Frost Art Museum’s popular Target Wednesday After Hours series on March 24, 2010 from 6 to 9 p.m. Target Wednesday After Hours is designed to complement The Frost Art Museum’s exhibitions and give visitors the chance to meet contemporary artists and engage with controversial art, live music, talks, films, dance, and performance art. The event is free and open to the public.

The Aesthetics and Values seminar, taught by artist and Honors College Fellow John Bailly, examines the vital role visual art plays in the social and cultural dialogue surrounding controversial issues. The Frost will also present its second exhibition devoted to healing arts called Artworks! The ArtWorks! art therapy exhibition will showcase students from Miami-Dade County Public Schools who participate in the art therapy program and will also feature art by cancer patients participating in the Arts in Medicine Program provided by the Children’s Cancer Fund. Guests will also have an opportunity to to view The Fantastic World of José Gurvich, Gurvich developed a new language that would combine elements of the European avant-garde and Pre-Columbian art.

Taiwan Discovered: In Place and Time

The Frost Art Museum continues its focus on the world of Asian art with Taiwan Discovered:In Place and Time. On Friday, February 19, 2010 discover the world of Taiwanese contemporary artists: mixing traditional and contemporary, Asian and Western, local and international. The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum presents Taiwan Discovered: In Place and Time, a new exhibition opening Friday, February 19 at 6 p.m. This event, free and open to the public, will take place at The Frost Art Museum at FIU’s Maidique Campus located at 10975 SW 17 Street, Miami, FL 33199.

“Taiwan Discovered: In Place and Time continues The Frost Art Museum’s foray into the world of Asian art. This exhibition will showcase true Taiwanese contemporary artists,” said Dr. Carol Damian, director & chief curator of The Frost Art Museum. “It is the first of its kind in the Southeast region.”

Taiwan Discovered: In Place and Time, will be curated in-house by Director Carol Damian and Catalina Jaramillo. The exhibition will showcase Taiwanese contemporary artists: mixing traditional and contemporary, Asian and Western, local and international. Taiwan’s artists are exploring different approaches and developing their own unique styles through a wide variety of media, from painting and rock art to multimedia installations.

The Fantastic World of José Gurvich- José Gurvich was an extraordinary artist whose life bridged distant places and cultures. His art speaks directly to the soul, addressing the need to see reality through the eyes of the spirit. In his work Gurvich paired the fantastic and the everyday in a way that appears effortless.

In Body and Soul- The Performance Art of María Teresa Hincapié-The show, curated by Francine Birbragher, examines the work of Maria Teresa Hincapié, a well-known avant-garde Colombian performance artist. A tribute to one of the most important figures of performance art in Latin America, the exhibition presents a selection of videos and photographs documenting some of the artist’s works, and serves as a testimony of her valuable contribution.

Women’s Work/Men’s Work: Labor and Gender in America-The Wolfsonian Teaching Gallery at The Frost Art Museum is a collaboration between The Wolfsonian-FIU, The Frost, and FIU faculty. The exhibition serves as a resource for teaching and learning. The support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation will provide an opportunity for FIU faculty to collaborate with staff from both museums to organize small exhibitions from The Wolfsonian collection that will be exhibited within The Frost Art Museum’s gallery space.

José Gurvich was an extraordinary artist whose life bridged distant places and cultures. When he was six years old his family emigrated to Uruguay. His pictorial language developed from the diverse environments and art forms he was exposed to: intimate domestic scenes in Montevideo, rural life and religious festivities in Israel, New York’s crowds and vibrant urban views. Each element in his paintings is carefully chosen from lived experience and condensed by his constant search for the fundamental and essential. His art speaks directly to the soul, addressing the need to see reality through the eyes of the spirit. In his work Gurvich paired the fantastic and the everyday in a way that appears effortless. So join us for the opening and come experience The Fantastic World of José Gurvich.

This exhibition, curated by Francine Birbragher, examines the work of well-known Colombian performance artist María Teresa Hincapié. Hincapié’s initial studies were in acting and she developed her work in performance art, where she stood in the vanguard of this artistic medium in Colombia.

The Wolfsonian Teaching Gallery, a collaboration between The Wolfsonian-FIU, The Frost and FIU faculty, is intended to serve as a resource for teaching and learning. The support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation will provide an opportunity for FIU faculty to collaborate with staff from both museums to organize small exhibitions from The Wolfsonian collection that will be exhibited within The Frost Art Museum’s gallery space. The inaugural exhibition,Women’s Work / Men’s Work: Labor and Gender in America, was organized with Professor Alex Lichenstein, Department of History, FIU, who will teach a course on twentieth-century U.S. labor history in the Spring semester of 2010.

Drawn from The Wolfsonian’s collection, the exhibition explores how art, propaganda, and advertising have represented changing ideas about the kinds of work appropriate for men and women. The exhibition is co-curated by Alex Lichtenstein, FIU associate professor of history, in conjunction with his course on US labor history. The exhibition is The Wolfsonian’s first installation at The Frost Art Museum on FIU’s main campus, part of an ongoing initiative made possible by funding from The Andrew W. On the second Friday of each month, a secret room in the Children’s Room at the Main Library becomes The Reading Room. In this cozy space, visitors can get up close and personal with selections from the Library’s collection of artists’ books, publications and multiples. Experience these objects without having to look at them through a display case, engage in conversation over coffee and cookies, and see living-room style screenings of video and new media art.
Special guest Rosemarie Chiarlone’s work explores controversial social issues concerning women and relationships in the 21st century. Through two and three dimensional works, video, book art, and installations employing diverse materials and media, her current work addresses the physical and psychological boundaries of human connectedness and the impact of its loss on individuals and within a larger societal scope. These works deal with sexual objectification, the role of sexuality and sexual identity within society, and the breakdown of connection.
This month’s screening from Aspect: The Chronicle of New Media Art is Volume 7: Personas and Personalities. All the works in this volume examine the role of personal psychology in how we interact with others and our surroundings on an everyday basis. It features artists exploring personal or cultural issues of gender, identity and personality. Artists in this volume include: CarianaCarianne, Lynn Hershman, Erik Levine, The Yes Men, and others.
