Concert – Contemporary Diverging Paths: An Eclectic Blend of Music from the 1920s-1960s at Bass Museum 10/11/09

Sunday, October 11, 3:00pm
Concert – Contemporary Diverging Paths: An Eclectic Blend of Music from the 1920s-1960s
This unique program features music from the 20th century composed within a relatively short span of time, but completely different in nature.
Leo Ornstein’s Piano Sonata No. 4 reflects a neo-romantic style, while Alberto Ginstera’s Piano Sonata No.1 for Piano, Opus 22 incorporates folk tunes and rhythmic patterns strongly characteristic of Argentinean native music. David Rosenboom’s Is Art Is is an interactive multi- media composition encompassing a blend of experimental music from the 1960s, new techniques and notation for ensembles, cross-cultural collaborations, and computer music systems.
A not-to-missed contemporary showcase!

The Heavy Pets show at Tobacco Road 10/2/09

THP Photo Roxys 09 Full Band[44]
The Heavy Pets are playing at Tobacco Road on Friday, October 2 at 10 PM ($6 at the door) and it’s their last South Florida show before heading out on their Winter 2009 tour, which includes several stops with The Brew and Particle. “Sleep” and “Operation of Flight” off their album Whale are staples on Sirius/XM Radio’s Jam On and they have a new bassist, Justin Carney, cementing the line up.

The hardest touring jam band, The Heavy Pets, are playing Tobacco Road as the first stop on their Fall 2009 tour, which includes several dates with The Brew and Particle. “Sleep” and “Operation of Flight” off their double-disc, Whale, are staples on Sirius Radio’s Jam On and their live shows are a powerful explosion of funk-reggae and rock, that is never the same experience twice.

www.theheavypets.com

Based in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, The Heavy Pets have spent the last three years touring nationally behind their double-disc debut album Whale, and their newest release, the EP Slow Motion Conductor. Fronted by 5 songwriters and backed by these critically revered, and popularly celebrated recordings, The Pets have found a happy home on big stages across the country, as a supporting act (for the likes of Matisyahu, Umphreys McGee, Tea Leaf Green, Perpetual Groove and Assembly of Dust, Lettuce, Particle and Little Feat), and also performing a growing number of festival appearances (’09 Bonnaroo, ’09 Moe.Down, ’09 Summer Camp, ’08 SXSW Festival, ’06, ’07 & 08 Langerado Festival, ’08 Wakarusa, ’07 10KLF, ’08 Green Apple Fest in NYC, ’08 High Sierra, ’08 Gathering of the Vibes, and ’08 and ’09 New Orleans Backbeat Jazzfest). The Heavy Pets now boast the extra sex appeal of bassist Justin Carney.

“The Pets just might be a perfect jamband” – Dennis Cook, Jambase “My favorite new band to hit the scene” – Jonathan Schwartz, Sirius Radio Jam On 17 “…The greatest jamband to come out of Florida since, well, ever…” “They are an arena ready band without the arena. At its best the band is a living, breathing, force of nature-a whale.” – Dan Sweeney, Relix Magazine “Full blown musical salvation” “Funky loose limbed rock ‘n’ soul” – Jonathan Zwickle, Music Editor, Broward-Palm Beach New Times “Nice big balls to release a 2-CD, 20 track behemoth as their debut” “their future is bright” – Dennis Cook, Jambase “Some sort of funk-reggae rock hybrid that’s laid back and sexy” “I like” – Leslie Gray Streeter, Palm Beach Post.

Rosalia Roio and Eliseo Parra in Concert at Centro Cultural Espanol 10/8/09

Rosalia Roio and Eliseo Parra in Concert
Fri. Oct. 30 8PM at Centro Cultural Español
Rosalia, Guitar player, songwriter, composer and vocalist, a truly original musician. With a fabulous energy and singular mastery of her instrument, able to un-earth the ancient popular music of her native Spain and embody it in an astonishing performance full of passion and mastery. Rosalia’s music is an inspired encounter of beauty, guts and virtuosity. Though educated with some of the bests musicians in the world, Rosalía’s songs reveal a truly un-affected, creative and brave artist who has become a cult musician for an international audience. Her music is a fusion of traditional Spanish Folk music that has been largely forgotten. The adaptations combine this folk heritage, which is not derived from Flamenco, with jazz and Latin colors. She has taken many sources and created a new musical vision enriched by her virtuosity guitar technique. Eliseo Parra is one Spain’s leading performers and researchers of folk music. He has traveled to small villages to rediscover old songs, musical instruments and learned how to play some instruments in the traditional style. He reconstructs folk music by adding modern elements. His background may seem surprising to some. He began as a rock musician and afterwards became interested in jazz and Caribbean rhythms. Eventually, he ended up rediscovering Spanish folk music.

TWO CONCERTS ONE NIGHT! featuring Russian Red and Alex*Cuba
Thu. Oct. 15 8PM at Colony Theater
Two concerts at the beautiful Miami Beach’s Art Deco Colony Theater with some of the best of emerging Contemporary World Music artists! The night begins with Russian Red, the stage name for Lourdes Hernández, a singer-songwriter based in Madrid, Spain. Her beautifully crafted, minimal songs beam delicate folk harmonies and lustrous vocals, originally formed in 2007, by Lourdes and Brian Hunt. The moniker for Lourdes comes from a lipstick color she frequently uses. The evenings closes with Singer-songwriter Alex*Cuba who’s trademark sugarcane-sweet melodies, pop-soul hooks and rock chords subtly subvert commonly held notions of what Cuban music is. Alex is the vanguard, crafting a cross-cultural sound. Not tied to tradition, this Cuban-Canadian prefers his vintage Gibson over el sencerro (cowbell) anytime.

The COFFEE HOUSE GYPSIES
They have been active in Miami’s music scene since 1997 and they have performed in New York City, Hollywood, Tampa, and all over South Florida. They were one of the headliners for the Tobacco Road 96 Anniversary Party and in 2008 they became the only band to-date to win nine Status QuO South Florida Live Music Awards with nominations in ten categories.
After several limited-press LP and EP releases, The Coffee House Gypsies released a long awaited full-length album in 2008. The album was titled “The Artist” and featured 13 tracks of pop/rock fan favorites carefully laced between spoken word poetry bits. The release featured cameo appearances by other local Miami bands and artists and led reviewers and critics to say, “The music of the Coffee House Gypsies from the Southern tip of Florida is as magical as their name implies.” The album consists of all original compositions and one cover song: a version of Simon & Garfunkel’s Sound of Silence which Dirk Faes (of The Fleetwood Mac Legacy in Hoboken Belgium) called “his favorite version of the song ever.”
In 2009 South Florida’s Sun Sentinnel called the Miami band “a band of nomads who keep moving to different musical genres.” The Miami Herald said, “CHG’s sound is reminiscent of The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac and The Mamas and the Papas,” referring to them as “a quintessential jam band: they sometimes rock out with electric guitars and synthesizers or play mellow acoustic rhythms. Sometimes they even recite spoken word poetry between songs.”
The band now plays local venues regularly. Uva in Coral Gables and Sophie Moon showcases this band weekly all September-long as they prepare to release a new album in 2010. They are “a pop-rock-tinged acoustic folksy coffeehouse band” says Miami New Times, “Fans of Fleetwood Mac, the Mamas and the Papas, and 97.3 FM should dig this group without question. Their harmonies, both vocal and instrumental, are soothing and give a generally upbeat feel”

http://www.youtube.com/CoffeeHouseGypsies

The BAILOUTS
A Miami-based band that is doing classic hits with a modern edge, The Bailouts rose from the ashes of bands like The VoodooCasters and Wednesday’s Child. They began turning heads in the local scene early 2009 when they began appearing in local venues and music festivals. Fronted by powerful, versatile and engaging vocalists, the band performs a variety of cover songs while infusing them with originality and all new twists. Their rich sound, tight harmonies, and high energy performances set them apart from most bands in the circuit.
Like CHG, this band is not just fronted by one gender or one voice. With a Natalie Merchant stage vibe and a voice like Kate Pierson from the B52s (or old-school Pat Benatar) the group’s front woman Annie electrifies the stage while Bailout male vocalist Tony (previously of “Naked Bootleg”) takes the mic for the occassional male perspective. Electric guitar riffs and synthesizer pads fill the audible plane with this band’s signature “Bailout” Bang.
“We do some back and forth,” Tony says about the male and female lead vocal roles in this new up and coming act, “We even sometimes duet on songs like ‘Don’t You Want Me Baby’ by The Human League and ‘Stop Dragging My Heart Around’ by Tom Petty & Stevie Nicks. We sometimes even swap roles, like, I’ll sing ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’ by Britney Spears and Annie might do ‘Just Like Heaven’ by The Cure.”
The band rocks out on stages all across Miami, gracing venues such as Tobacco Road, Poprox, Little Hoolie’s, and more. Most recently they performed alongside The CHG at the 2009 Music Festival: 80’s Flashback. Their repertoire takes the audience on a musical journey through time and space, engaging the audience with familiar favorites and beloved classics that are hard to not sing along with. They welcome new listeners to a musical experience that is like no other…

“Open since 1912, Tobacco Road is Miami’s oldest bar, surviving hurricanes, prohibition and going through a long list of presidents dating back to William Howard Taft. Even if you stop by not to have a drink, the place itself is a historic attraction. With a full liquor bar that’s open until 5AM seven days a week and a kitchen that opens till 4AM offering NY Strips and one of the best burgers in the city, the Road is a winner to any and all”
(from ClubPlanet.com)

“You can find live entertainment any night of the week at Tobacco Road. Claiming the title of Miami’s oldest bar, Tobacco Road has hosted great entertainers throughout its 95-year-plus history, including artists like George Clinton and Koko Taylor. The upstairs Cabaret was the local watering hole during Prohibition to gangster Al Capone and his associates”

In 1999 the Coffee House Gypsies released their first studio project: a limited-edition indie LP titled “In Tenement Halls” that made its way across Miami’s underground like a brushfire. The CD featured cover photography by Miami’s Lori Diaz and audio that included a pre-Artist version of Tigerlilly (which later was remixed and included in the 2008 CHG album, The Artist) The LP also included the alterna-rock-sounding old CHG song, “Fly Away” (with Floridian minstrel, Danny Salazar). Frances Gronlier of the band “Pretty On Paper” also made vocal cameos throughout the disk and Frank Perez (who sang the duet with CHG’s Albert Damian on the 2008 Album’s CHG Simon & Garfunkel cover of “The Sound of Silence”) sang on the CHG’s only recorded piano ballad to-date: a song written by Albert Damian titled, “Good Enough” which was only released on the rare “In Tenement Halls” release.

The larger works of Richard Strauss, from tone poems to operas, are well known and loved, but his chamber works are just as magnificent yet much more obscure. His Sonatina No. 1, “From the Workshop of an Invalid,” was written during Strauss’ bout of the flu. Even when sick, Strauss wrote incredible music!

SEPHARDIC MUSIC – Romantic Songs of Spanish Jews
Montserrat Franco, Soprano
Claude Kadoch, Guitar & Darhukka
Free & Open to the Public

For centuries, the legacy and traditions of Sepharad (Spain in Hebrew) was transmitted through generations of Sephardic Jews on their Diaspora after they were ousted of Spain in 1492 and settled in several parts of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. They left Spain but never their language “Djudeo-Espanyol” also called “Ladino” (a language which defer from the Spanish or Castillan spoken by Christians at that time and which includes Hebrew elements and vocabulary from the local languages) neither the culture which includes an amazing oral tradition : tales, poems and songs or “Romanceros” just as the “Trovadours” will perform in the Middle Age.

The vast collection of Romances preserved and transmitted for generations will come back to life on September 27th when Singer “Montserrat Franco” will present in an unique venue accompanied by the Israeli Moroccan Artist Claude Kadoch. These songs express not only these historical changes but also the entire life-cycle of that people, with their moments of joy, sorrow and love, its festivities and celebrations. This rich and varied culture is the basis of the Ladino repertoire, a musical treasure that never ceased to grow in the new places where the Sephardic Jews settled.

About the Artist: Montserrat Franco, a graduated Vocal Professor, ethnomusicologist and grantee of several scholarships by the European Parliament in Madrid, Spain and the State of Israel researched about the Sephardic Romances and Traditions from 1999 to 2002.

She was commissioned by the State of Israel to perform around the world as a truly sephardic artist during International Literature Fairs and Symposiums of the Spanish Language always sponsored by the AECI (Spanish Agency of International Cooperation)

New Hot Series in Miami Beach Puts Musicians Back to Work 8/16,23/09

Vintage-Soul-August-2009-small
Hot New Vintage Soul Series Opens At The Van Dyke Cafe August 16 and At The News Lounge August 23rd Puts Artists Back to Work

The upstairs lounge in The Van Dyke Café is very unassuming. In fact, if it wasn’t for the video stream downstairs, you might not even know about the mystical experiences happening right above the common area. But for those “in the know”, it’s the ultimate in true raw traditional musical talent where artists unleash and audiences get a glimpse of an exclusive rare treat of talent available for the taking.

Upstairs at The Van Dyke Café on South Beach, a new series called “Vintage Soul”, co-produced by harmonica player, Randy Singer, keeps the music scene rocking and rolling with an exceptional grouping of local artists banning together to create and play music to a captive and appreciative audience. The interactive series features live music ranging from R&B and neo soul to jazz, blues, reggae, funk and gospel, spanning four generations of music including classics from Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Bob Marley, Chaka Khan, Sade, Alicia Keys, among many others. Due to the initial success and unprecedented response of the special performance held earlier this month, The Van Dyke Café located at 846 Lincoln Road in Miami Beach, rated the “Best Jazz Club” by Miami New Times, will host the series on a regular basis once a month until December, beginning Sunday, August 16, 9pm-1am. Sister café The News Lounge located on 5580 NE 4th Court in The Courtyard at 55th Street Station in Miami will also host the series starting August 23. As a new age outdoor garden lounge this setting acts as the perfect backdrop to the new series.

Co-producer of Vintage Soul, Natasha Haynes of PhoenixStar Entertainment comments on the purpose of the series and the state of the music industry today. She says, “The Vintage Soul series was created not only to pay tribute to classic soul music of yesterday and today, but to also give undiscovered artists and talented vocalists a moment in the spotlight. Major record labels have cut back on promoting new artists and traditional ways of promotion are simply not available anymore. Those with true talent have to self-promote and use whatever tools they have available to reach the audience that values their quality. So whether they are singing a classic soul cover song or one of their original songs, Vintage Soul, gives artists a platform of exposure so that they can market themselves and showcase their talent.”

Haynes enjoys working with singer, songwriter, and musician Randy Singer who, she says, helps find work for musicians. “Randy makes sure artists are seen and appreciated. He provides bookings, enthusiasm, and the tools they need to continue their work in an atmosphere that induces creativity and cohesiveness.” Singer is based in Miami and books talent all over the tri county area in addition to booking all the nightly entertainment at The Van Dyke Café and The News Lounge through his company Randy Singer Music. He himself has played all over the world with such greats as Franco da Vita, Toots Thielemans, Caetano Veloso, Juan Luis Guerra, Timbaland and Julio Iglesias in such places as Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Paris, Czech Republic, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Germany, Amsterdam, Mexico, New York, and Nashville.

With music by The Derek Mac Band backing some of South Florida’s local artists, this series is already a hit and the best kept secret. With limited space and no cover, it’s best to get there early. For more information or if you’re interested in playing for the series, email phoenixstarmusic@aol.com with your photos, web-links, mp3 files and whatever else you think earns you some stage time or visit http://www.thevandykecafe.com/vintagesoul.

ECOMB presents Raise the Bar fundraiser at Waxy O’Connor’s with Ritchie & Rivenbark, The Rockadictos, The Dizzy Bird 7/27/09

flyer
The Environmental Coalition of Miami and the Beaches (ECOMB) started an amazing project called “Raise the Bar.” ECOMB is trying to get all the bars in Miami Beach to recycle. A student from UM got a grant from Hands on Miami, and started with four pilot bars already.

ECOMB is fundraising at every one of those bars, and this month is Waxy O’Connor’s. The event is on July 27th, from 8pm to 2am. Ritchie & Rivenbark, The Rockadictos and The Dizzy Bird are playing. Proceeds of the bar will benefit Raise the Bar and ECOMB, and help raise awareness to this issue.

A University of Miami medicine student launched a program that is bound to launch Miami way ahead in the global green movement.

“Miami has been very behind in the green revolution, but now it’s time to step up to the plate,” said Fernanda Medici, one of the program assistants of ECOMB who is also responsible for pushing the project forward.

Raise the Bar (Miami Beach) is an exciting pilot program designed to promote recycling at local bars across Miami Beach. The program started on Earth Day, April 22nd, 2009, and it provided free recycling services to four select bars across the city through June 2009. In a joint collaboration between the Environmental Coalition of Miami Beach (ECOMB) and World Waste Services, Inc., each bar received complimentary recycling bins and pick-up for the duration of the program. A projected 15,000 bottles and cans have already been recycled in the four bars alone.

This is an unprecedented initiative generously funded by Hands On Miami’s Starbucks
Youth Philanthropy Committee, but this is only the beginning. Founded by committed volunteer / project coordinator, Neha Patel, and ECOMB Director, Luiz Rodrigues, it is intended that the program will eventually grow to incorporate all bars across Miami Beach. Currently, only a small percentage of bars in Miami Beach recycle, despite that recycling is cost-effective, saves money and is mandated by law. As a bold stride towards greenifying Miami Beach, the following bars have graciously committed to the program: Abraxas Lounge, Purdy Lounge, The Catalina, and Waxy O’Connor’s Irish Pub.

The ECOMB volunteers are planning on having a celebratory party at each of the four bars. The intention is to bring awareness to the issue and also raise funds for the organization.

Seraphic Fire Presents: Tableau Baroque in Handel’s Inheritance
Par ot Seraphic Fire’s NEW Summer Series. Join us for Handel’s Inheritance, a musical journey through the formative years of this giant of the Baroque period. Starting in Halle, Germany, we trace his travels through Italy and into England, savoring the cosmopolitan blending of French, Italian, and Germanic styles so popular in Europe at he time. Hear the music of Handel’s youth, from chapel, chamber, and stage, as these influences blend into the unmistakable sound of the mature master. Through the compositions of Corelli, Keiser, Schelle, J.P. Krieger, Zachow, Steffani, Handel himself, and others, experience the sonic tapestry of the world in which this young composer became the man we now celebrate. Tableau Baroque is an American chamber music ensemble dedicated to bringing the music of the Baroque to life through emotionally connected, historically informed, illuminating performances. Core members Ian Howell, countertenor, and Henry Lebedinsky, early keyboards, are joined for this concert by Michael Albert, baroque violin/countertenor, and Brian Howard, baroque cello.

Beethoven Society All-Beethoven Free Concert 609 609 609 6/9/09

“609… 6/09… 6:09…”
“IT’S BEETHOVEN’S TIME TO SHINE”
During an All-Beethoven Free Concert on Brickell/Miami
609 BRICKELL, on 6/09, at 6:09 p.m., 2009
The Opening Concert for the “Second Annual Classical Virtuosi Festival of Miami”
Artistic Director, Prof. Thomas Moore
New World School of the Arts
Like 5th Avenue in New York City or Rodeo Drive in Los Angeles, Brickell Avenue in Miami has quickly become synonymous with world-class elegance as has the music of Ludwig van Beethoven. The Beethoven Society of Miami-Dade, a not for profit organization, presents as the Opening Concert for the “Second Annual Classical Virtuosi Festival of Miami” the Third Annual “609… 6/09… 6:09… it’s Beethoven’s time to shine”.

The All-Beethoven on Brickell classical music concert, free and open to the public, features young artists accompanied by the “Classical Virtuosi Festival of Miami” full orchestra conducted by Maestro Alfred Gershfeld. The concert will take place in the First Presbyterian Church of Miami at 609 Brickell Avenue, on Tuesday, June 9th, at 6:09 p.m.

Artistic Director Professor Thomas Moore designed this All-Beethoven Concert specifically for the businesses and neighborhoods in the Brickell area, but it is open to the whole city of Miami.
The concert is co-sponsored by the Beethoven Society of Miami-Dade, the New World School of the Arts, Thomas Moore Violins, Inc., the First Presbyterian Church of Miami, the Brickell Area Association, the Brickell Homeowners Association, and the Brickell community as a whole. Saluting the arrival of the “PUBLIX/Mary Brickell Village”, Mr. Ken Martin, a well know classical music radio-personality will act as the Master of Ceremony. Thanks to the BEETHOVEN Society the concert will be video recorded for a later public television production.
The Concert will pay a Loving Memory Tribute honoring Maestro Reginald Nicholson (1946-2009) who, as the Artistic Director of the Alhambra Orchestra, was responsible for the success of the first two 609… 6/09… 6:09… concerts.
Opening at 6:09 p.m., Mr. David Brodie, church master organist, will play Beethoven selections.

“This is Beethoven’s time to shine and a wonderful place for those who live and work in and around Brickell Avenue to meet and mingle while listening to beautiful music,” says Gustavo Alfredo “Gus” Noguera, Founder & Executive Director of the Beethoven Society of Miami-Dade. “In past years, the concert had its biggest audience – almost 800 people filled the church. We hope for the same turnout this year,” states Noguera.
The program prepared by Prof. Thomas Moore is as follows:
Beethoven Romance in F major for Violin and Orchestra
Luis Fernandez, Violin Soloist
Beethoven Romance in G major for Violin and Orchestra
Gregory Durosel, Violin Soloist
Beethoven Concerto for Violin and Orchestra
Monty Bloom, Violin Soloist for the first movement;

Beethoven’s Symphony # 1, Final Movement

Free Concert & Charity Fundraiser in Coral Gables Features Live Music Jamming & Great Raffle Prizes 6/5/09

This Friday Night, June 5th Free Concert & Charity Fundraiser in Coral Gables Will Feature Live Music Jamming & Great Raffle Prizes

As the economy continues to force most to tighten their belts and closely monitor their cash flow many organizations are feeling the strain. Best Buddies, a well known 501©(3) non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with intellectual disabilities is no exception. This year they find themselves straining to send participants to their 2009 Annual Leadership Conference. When news of this reached local rock band and winners of nine Status QuO South Florida Live Music Awards, The Coffee House Gypsies, they joined forces with the elegant Hotel Saint Michel in Coral Gables and all of their friends to help the cause…

On the evening of Friday June 5th, just a short walk from Miracle Mile’s art exhibits, The Hotel Saint Michel will host one of the CHG’s popular acoustic/unplugged jam sessions. The jam show will last from 8:00 PM till about 10:30. Admission is free and all ages are welcome to attend. Invited jam guests include members of the band “Pretty On Paper” and local folk legend Valerie Wisecracker.

But wait! That’s not all…

Local record label Tenement Hall Productions of Miami will donate CDs of the band’s thirteen track 2008 release “The Artist” to sell during the show. All profits will go towards benefiting Best Buddies Leadership Conference 2009.

The album was described in a Muse’s Muse Music Review of The Coffee House Gypsies as being “as magical as their name implies.” Miami New Times’ Local Motion said that “Fans of Fleetwood Mac, the Mamas and the Papas, and 97.3 FM should dig this group without question. Their harmonies, both vocal and instrumental, are soothing and give a generally upbeat feel to the 13-track album” and last September RAG Magazine quoted sound engineer Cosmo Ohms saying The Coffee House Gypsies are “nu-folk rock for today’s generation.”

But wait, there is still more!

The band plans to hold a raffle to benefit the cause: all profit made from the sale of raffle tickets will go towards helping send attendees from Best Buddies to the Leadership Conference. One lucky winner will win tickets for two to an Orlando Florida theme park and another will win a two night stay for two at the luxurious Hotel Saint Michel!! Winners will be announced at 10:00 at the event and tickets are expected to sell for a mere $15 or $20.

Not bad huh?

The event was organized by the band’s lead singer/songwriter, Albert Damian Mata, in collaboration with Hotel Saint Michel and Tenement Hall Productions, LLC. When told what the band was doing to help Best Buddies with their Leadership Conference the activities coordinator for the non-profit, Liz Smith (who coincidentally happens to also be a loyal fan and a regular at CHG concerts and jam parties) said “It is just all sorts of cool!”

Mark, the general manager for The Hotel Saint Michel, explained that he had been trying to set up an event with The Coffee House Gypsies for some time, so when the opportunity to do this with them presented itself he was more than happy to jump in. “My son was actually very involved with Best Buddies when he was in high school a few years back, so I personally know all the good that they do. We at Saint Michel are just very happy to help.” The hotel has volunteered to serve free cheese platters while donating one dollar to the cause for every alcoholic drink sold during the show.

Acoustic/unplugged jam sessions and performances are nothing new to the now pop-rock band. They started out performing acoustic shows in local coffeehouses such as Joffreys and Luna Star. “We used to hang out at a local Starbucks writing music… the regulars got to know us and nicknamed us ‘those coffeehouse gypsies’ and the name stuck.” That is what they told The Miami Herald’s Rayme Samuels last November when they were given the title of The Herald’s ‘Band of The Hour’. Since then they have blossomed into a full rock band, playing bigger venues and shows alongside acts such as The Spam Allstars, Locos Por Juana, Jahfe’, and City of God, and even headlining at shows such as The Tobacco Road 96 Anniversary Celebration.

“We still do private parties and acoustic jam sessions a lot though,” the band’s Alex Norris says, “Its fun for us and our fans love it.”

Online one local fan blogs about how “they host private house jams for their fans and they throw huge parties where everyone gets to hang out and sing along with them” while another fan (Hector) posts, “The full blown electric shows are great. But I will always perfer the acoustic jam sessions. That’s when you really get the feel of what this band is all about. The intimate, candle lit rooms full of friends, family, fans and other local artists is really an experience that shouldn’t be missed.”

Most recently Mata made a surprise cameo appearance in Tampa and “jammed” with singer/songwriter Bradley Ashby at Beak’s Old Florida on May 29, 2009. The two harmonized on songs by Incubus, Melissa Etheridge, Fleetwood Mac, and Tom Petty. They even did some original songs such as Bradley’s “Its Raining Now.” Bradley kept telling audience members, “Believe it or not none of this is practiced or rehearsed” to which Mata replied “This is what jamming is all about, baby.” The crowd cheered the duet’s performance. “I still can’t believe that Albert Damian from The Coffee House Gypsies is here” said Bradley into the mic.

And so on June 5th the Gypsies will once again “jam” for an audience. No fancy effects, no electric distortion, no reverbs or delays, just good old passion for music.

“Our goal is to try to raise $1,000 in one night.” says Mata. “If we can generate enough money to send just one more kid to that conference it will be a really great accomplishment, I will personally be very, very happy with that.”

And The Gypsies are no strangers to supporting local causes neither. Since 1997 they have been active in the community with causes such as HIV & AIDS Research, Cancer Research, Local Emerging Arts and Local Independent Music, Support for US Troops, Equal Rights & Human Rights/Amnesty International, Batten Disease, Eco-Awareness & Conservation, Support for Local Animal & Pet Lovers, and more.

“As far as we can tell we only have this one life here,” says Mata, “So why not use it to try to make as many good things happen as possible?”

The acoustic/unplugged jam concert event for Best Buddies will take place on Friday, June 5th at 8:00 PM at The Hotel Saint Michel located at 162 Alcazar Avenue in Coral Gables. Donations can also be made online to the Best Buddies Kintera Fundraiser Page.

HERE II HERE, the soulful Miami-based band recently featured on Good Morning America will host a Summer Solstice Bash complete with live performances, fire dancers and a drum circle, June 20th, to commemorate the release of their first full-length album. Presented by Miami’s own Moksha Family Productions at 7th Circuit Studio (228 NE 59th St.), festivities begin at 8 p.m. and will include performances of the band’s hits such as “Besitos Chiquiticos,” “Yes” and “Holy.”

Guests of all ages can walk around and enjoy exhibits by internationally renowned artists, 13-year-old Akiane Kramarik, featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show, and United Nations world peace envoy Jacqueline Ripstein, both of whom contributed to HERE II HERE’s album artwork. Summer Solstice attendees can also engage in Tarot readings, a spirit auction, CD giveaways, raffles and spontaneous dancing, as HERE II HERE’s fused sounds of soul, world, pop and Afro-Cuban enliven the room starting at 10 p.m.

The doors open to the Public at 6:30 PM and is limited to 600 people.

The Free Concert will be the Premier of the World Class Orchestra under World Renowned National Conductor Donald Covert. Impact Artists that will be creating Art Masterpieces during the performance will thrill the audience in this rare form of combining two different Art forms.

The Concert and evening activities will help raise funds for ACIOI, SFLPHL and The Organ Donor Awareness Foundation and bring awareness to other Organizations and the many Musicians, Artists and Sponsors that are involved in this worthy project.

There are two Rehearsals at Artserve (Home Base for the Orchestra and ACIOI)
1350 East Sunrise Blvd.
Rehearsals at 6-8 PM
May 12 and May 14
In the Auditorium.

The Press and Public are invited and the purpose of this event is to premier the South Florida Philharmonic Orchestra under the leadership of National Conductor and International Conductor Donald Covert. The Event will be videotaped for distribution to potential Sponsors, Agents, Venue’s and Investors. Contents of this event will be telecast.

GAPAL will be performing his unique Method Chromosymphony and painting 2 pieces each for the 3 concerts.

The Ensemble will be performing to a huge crowd, expected to be at the door and down US1 from the Performing Arts Center in Hollywood. All three Organizations have done a massive ad campaign since early February and we have scheduled several radio interviews and have the news media supporting these causes.

On April 12, ACIOI represented itself and the Orchestra during the Marlins Game at Dolphin Stadium to a large crowd, ACIOI displayed the rare tiger maple Violin donated to the Orchestra at the Community Clubhouse Booth, we are privileged to have the honor of being recognized by the Marlins for our community leadership.

The Art Division of ACIOI has a campaign for utilizing broken and severely damaged musical equipment and instruments and turning them into art. Sales from these treasures from trash will enable the Orchestra to continue in its development.

The funding for major scheduled productions needs Underwriters, Investors and Sponsors on every level. Sponsors that ACIOI does have are; Toshiba, Marlins, Panthers, Heat, Dolphins, Bills, Steelers, Prizewheel.com, The Florida Aquarium, Horse Power Sales of Boynton Beach, New Times, ARTSERVE, Hollywood Performing Arts Center, Association of Fundraising Professionals, S.C.O.R.E., Hard Rock, Chicago Bulls, Cuillo Center for Arts and WLRN.

The South Florida Philharmonic Orchestra is comprised of 40 of the World’s Best Musicians under the Leadership of International and US National Conductor Donald Covert. All of these Musician’s have an active background in touring, are competition winner’s and many of them are teachers. They have sacrificed long and hard to be at the pinnacle of their chosen Instrument and many have the training in several to many Instruments.

This is a team effort made up of outstanding soloists and throughout this endeavor, the Staff of SFLPHL will bring the individual to the forefront to allow that talent to be shared by all of us. The goal of US National Conductor Donald Covert is to bring a full Orchestra of which he is known for in Europe back to Europe with the World Class Musicians that he is presently training with.

Maestro Donald Covert is one of the very few Conductors worldwide that memorize the work and will lead the Orchestra without sheet music. His scholastic Degrees, Worldwide tours and training under Leonard Bernstein, give him the right to proclaim himself as US National Conductor and we agree with the Maestro.

Sóniko is the creative sonic experience conformed by Alex Izaguirre, Javier Güell, Jorge García and Toto González, rooted in Miami’s underground spectrum of various musical tendencies. The 90’s Grunge, Brit Pop, a decisive base of Rock en Español, and fine arrangements of electronic variations mainly influence their sound and style.
In Sóniko’s first album “Kombustión”, their four members took on the enormous task of producing and working with renowned Grammy award winner Marcelo Añez (Shakira-Unplugged & Thalía), who put the final touches and reaffirmed the band’s desired sound.
A CD that got them 3 MTV Español top ten videos and concerts around the USA including SXSW, Latin Alternative Music Conference and Billboard Latin Music Conference among others.

Sóniko’s second album “Antídoto Parcial” shows their growth as composers and it’s evident in a collection of 12 excellent tracks. On this occasion, the band decided to bring back the locally acclaimed “Laberinto” which wasn’t released in “Kombustión”, with the special appearance of Gabriel from Minimal joining Alex on vocals.
The band will celebrate on May 21st at Transit Lounge the release or their new album in Miami with a free event supported by Myspace Latino, Jack Daniels, Gibson and Fábrika. This event will be special because SONIKO will do a live Internet broadcast for all their fans and friends outside Miami. This live broadcast will start at 10PM Eastern time at www.soniko.com
Since their origins in 2002, Sóniko is one of those bands that have triggered Miami’s interest in indie rock in both the Anglo and Latin community. Their local success has reached out to other places such as California, New York, Georgia, Texas and Puerto Rico. Through Fabrika, Myspace, Facebook and several other music related Internet sites, the band has built up a strong international fan base, which is awaiting the moment of Soniko’s powerful live performance to be back and also to be seen for the first time.

Guitarists Jennifer Batten and Vicki Genfan to Perform in Florida Keys 5/18/09

guitars
Batten/Genfan
Monday, May 18
8 p.m.
TIB Amphitheater

On Monday, May 18, at the TIB Bank of the Keys Amphitheater, fans can experience two of the most critically acclaimed guitarists playing today — Jennifer Batten and Vicki Genfan.

At one point Batten was in 6 different bands, playing everything from straight ahead rock, to metal, fusion, and funk. A major turning point came when she was selected from more than 100 guitarists to play in Michael Jackson’s band, resulting in 3 world tours over 10 years and playing in front of almost 5 million people.

Spring of 98’ saw Batten joining legendary guitarist Jeff Beck, resulting in two CDs (“Who Else,” “You Had It Coming”) and corresponding world tours. Says

the Cleveland Plain Dealer of Jennifer’s Rock N Roll Hall of Fame performance honoring Les Paul: “The evening’s showstopper was Jennifer Batten…amazing and technically dazzling.”

Vicki Genfan has captivated both US and international audiences with a unique style that defies description. Winner of the prestigious 2008 Guitar Player’s “Guitar Superstar”Award, Vicki has developed a sound all her own.

As Joel Selvin of the San Francisco Chronicle writes, “Genfan doesn’t just play guitar. She also slaps it, tickles it, fondles it, scratches it, tosses it around in her hands and coaxes all kinds of unlikely, rhythmic sounds out of the otherwise simple instrument.”

Vicki is that rare artist whose live performances are becoming legendary among fans.

Genfan’s newest release is “UnCovered.”

Conde Naste Traveller online: Miami goes Cuckoo for CuCu:
” As if you ever needed an excuse to head to Miami. Well, just in case, you’ll have the perfect pretext tomorrow when a handful of groovy international artists pops into town for the Heineken Transatlantic Festival. The three-week extravaganza culminates on April 25 with maybe the oddest, and coolest, double bill I’ve ever heard of: The acclaimed, berobed-and-turbaned Tuareg band Tinariwen from Mali and vampy Cuban firecracker Cucu Diamantes. Longtime front woman for the funky Latin urban collective Yerba Buena, CuCu just released her debut solo album Cuculand. She owned downtown New York at her recent launch party at the Bowery Ballroom, a carnivalesque affair complete with contortionists, a midget emcee, and a bold brass section.

Visit CuCu Diamantes online
CuCu Diamanates’s solo project, with legendary producer, composer and musician Andres Levin on guitar, builds on the sound of Yerba Buena, the band that redefined Latin Groove. The New York Times hailed the group as “one of New York’s best new dance bands, mixing up the Latin boogaloo of the 60’s, Cuban religious music, some American soul and Fela-like Afrobeat.” CuCu brings similar energy to her new solo project, combing jazz savvy and vintage glamour with the sly grit of New York, a touch of cabaret, and the pulse of Afro-Cuban beats.

Visit Tinariwen online
“Tinariwen capture …Keith Richards, Ry Cooder and Ali Farka Toure picking side by side under an unforgiving sun.” – Rolling Stone. “The Clash of the desert,” Tinariwen are nomadic Touareg guitar-poets from Mali’s southern Sahara. Their music carries the message of freedom and resistance among their people, and formed the soundtrack to the 1990 Touareg rebellions in Mali and Niger. Their sound is traditional tribal melodies transposed to electric guitar, mixed with blues, rock, pop, Berber and Arabic influences – a modern desert rock. Tinariwen have won countless awards for Best CD of the Year in polls around the world and a prestigious BBC Award for World Music. They also co-founded the seminal Festival in the Desert in 2001 in Timbuktu. They are visiting Miami Beach after Coachella Festival.

The Budos Band are an 11-member big band, a majestic sonic groove of Afrobeat, Ethiopian jazz, funk and 1960s Stax-era soul. The core of the band met as youths while participating in an after-school jazz ensemble in Staten Island. Late night ferry rides into Manhatta, led to the back door of the No Moore Club downtown, packed with James Brown fanatics and Fela Kuti disciples. They fell hard for bands like Antibalas, the Sugarman Three, and Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings and knew this was their new musical direction. After meeting resistance from the band director, they recruited a few more horn players and formed their own band. With the 2005 release of their self-titled debut album, the Budos Band officially joined the ranks of the Daptone Family and began to perform frequently as part of the Daptone Soul Revue, alongside the very acts that had inspired them only a few years before.

Javier Garcia creates “a musical narrative for Miami as sweet as kissing your honey on the beach to a swaying reggae beat, as danceable as a 3 a.m. Cuban jam session.” Born in Spain to a Cuban father and an Irish mother, Javier started playing the guitar at 12 years old. The Franciscan headmaster at his high school in Ireland told him that although he loved hearing his music in the school halls, he would be better suited in another school. So he moved with his father in Miami and fully delved into Cuban Miami music and life. His first CD achieved gold sales and set up young Javier as a Latin pop star. But he delved more into music roots, and began to work with top collaborators on a follow-up, finding greater musical freedom and maturity: multi-Grammy award winning producer Gustavo Santaolalla, drummer Abe Laboriel Jr (from Paul McCartney’s band), living batá treasure Francisco Aguabella and others. His sound is a diverse fusion of Cuban music with rock, hip-hop, ska, funk, reggae, anchored by his talents as a composer, arrange, guitar and percussion player and gifted singer.

DJ Marcelino Da Lua is one third of the ground-breaking Rio de Janeiro-based team Bossacucanova. Second-generation bossa novans, they have taken the iconic music of their fathers and made it new yet again with the addition of breakbeats and electronica. As a DJ, Da Lua lets loose with a mix of Brazilan, hiphop, reggae and electic sounds. The After Show party at Boteco is free and open to the public.

Celebrate the end of a fantastic season with the unbridled romance of Tchaikovsky and the rich talents of MTT and pianist Vladimir Feltsman. Enjoy a lively lyric scene from Tchaikovsky’s opera Eugene Onegin as Conducting Fellow Edward Abrams brings the elegant Polonaise to life. His First Piano Concerto has endlessly been parodied by Liberace stylings, but in the hands of fellow Russian Feltsman, this work is pure genius and beauty. The musical and biographical journey ends with his Fifth Symphony, where MTT navigates through the dense score of incandescent sensibilities and erupting violent outbursts. Bay Jam 15 – Family Music Event in Islamorada, FL Keys 4/19/09

The Waybacks Star in Bay Jam 15, All Day Music Fest on the Bay

The Waybacks, one of the hottest bands in the country — playing a genre-hopping blend of bluegrass/jamgrass, honky-tonk, swing, classical music, and blues and pop — headline Bay Jam 15, held April 19 in Islamorada Founders Park.
“The Waybacks bring real star power to this year’s Bay Jam and are spectacular live,” said David Feder, president of ICE. “In addition, this event showcases the Keys’ best music with great local bands, is family-friendly, and tops it off by using the proceeds to award thousands of dollars in art and music scholarship to local students.”

Gates open at 11 a.m. for the all-day annual outdoor music fest. With free admission for kids 13 and under, $10 for adults and just $5 for students, Bay Jam is affordable for everyone. A total of 14 bands will play including David Feder and son Nyan, a reunion of the popular Blackwater Sound, and Marley Fest-favorite Baga Tricks.

The Waybacks, from San Francisco, have been described as “purveyors of acoustic mayhem.” The band has produced five albums to date and have a dedicated following. Wherever they play, high praise follows: The Washington Post described band members as “…virtuosos sharing a singular mind-set.” Billboard Magazine said “These guys can play like bandits,” and the San Jose News called them “…geniuses … whose playing stacks up to anything you’ll find.”

Bay Jam has everything needed for day of music and fun in a spectacular setting on the Florida Bay. Concertgoers (especially families and kids) can enjoy a swim at the bayfront beach just steps away from the TIB Bank of the Keys Amphitheater stage. A variety of food will be provided by two well known local restaurants – Craig’s and the Green Turtle. Soft drinks, beer, wine, and snacks will be available. Commemorative T-shirts will be on sale, there will be an art show, and noted artist Pasta Pantaleo will paint various aspects of Bay Jam as they occur.

Bay Jam, now in its fifteenth year, raises money for art and music scholarships for local high school students and in-school programs and necessary supplies. Feder proudly notes that to date, Bay Jam has awarded more than $125,000 in scholarships to local students. “It’s the community’s chance to have a great time while financially supporting the musical and artistic dreams of talented local kids,” said Feder.

Scheduled to appear are: Guitarist David Feder will perform his popular hillbilly flamenco style and son Nyan, 14, will amaze with incredible guitar talents; C.W. Colt plays tropical swamp blues; Baga Tricks brings unique rock/ Reggae; Jimmy Hawkins is the island king of the Blues; Steve Miller and Blackwater Sound play classic rock; Second Chance Band performs inspirational rock; Micah plays Caribbean country; Luke Sommer Glen Band plays Southern-fried rock; Steve Venini is a talented acoustic singer/songwriter; Stereo Underground is Key Largo’s rock warrior; and the Coral Shores High School Jazz Band brings the big band sound to the stage. The band schedule will be posted on the ICE website prior to the event.

Attendees can bring blankets and lawn chairs, but coolers are not permitted. For detailed information about Bay Jam or and the musicians, go to www.keysice.com.

ICE is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing quality entertainment and cultural events to Upper Keys residents and provides musical and arts scholarships to local students.
