LeVeL8 Live Recording at Cooper City Church of God 2/26/10

LeVeL8’s first album, which is self titled, will be recorded on Feb 26, 2010 at the Cooper City Church of God. 9191 Stirling Road Cooper City Florida.
We are incorporating a “praise and worship” experience with the direction that the album will take. We really just want people to think about God when they hear our music.
LeVeL8 takes a more varied approach flavored with techno, rock, Caribbean mixes, Latin, rap and a little R&B. We seek a fresh sound and we want our music to appeal not only to people in America but all people across the globe.
LeVeL8, which signifies, ‘A New Beginning’ was birthed in late 2008. The name indicates that anyone, regardless of life circumstances can make a turnaround. The group takes everyday life situations and places in it a spiritual perspective that allows Christ to resonate in the Lyrics written and the music we play

Bass Museum of Art Presents Gil Morgenstern Second Concert of Reflection Series 2/24/10

At 7:30pm on Wednesday, February 24, 2010 violinist Gil Morgenstern’s Reflections Series will continue with a second concert at the Bass Museum of Art. The performance, entitled The Stuff Dreams Are Made On is inspired by Carl Jung’s famous “Red Book” in which he details his theory of the collective unconscious and will explore the integral role dreams play in culture. Musical works performed by Gil Morgenstern with pianist Donald Berman will include John Cage’s Dreams, Georges Enesco’s Impressions d’enfance (Impressions of Childhood), Jean Sibelius’ Nocturne and Franz Schubert’s Fantasy. Aubyn Philabaum will read text from Sylvia Plath’s Johnny Panic and the Bible of Dreams, The Wishing Box, The Ghost’s Leave- taking, Southern Sunrise, and The Unabridged Journals. Using music, prose and poetry, the program will invite the audience on a nocturnal journey from dusk through dawn, creating a narrative of memory, nightmare and fantasy through the use of music and words.

As Artistic Director of the Reflections Series, Gil Morgenstern utilizes innovative programming to contextualize historical styles and arts movements for a 21st century audience. The performances merge artistic mediums, encouraging audiences to engage numerous senses and reflect anew on universal themes. The Reflections Series mixes solo and chamber music with visual art, poetry, and prose from around the world.

The final concert on May 6 is called A Pilgrim’s Progress and will include music of Francis Poulenc and Bruce Saylor, and text from Dante’s “Inferno.”

More about Gil Morgenstern: Acclaimed for his artistry and technical brilliance, violinist Gil Morgenstern has performed in many of the world’s great concert halls. The New York Times has hailed his playing as “a perfect demonstration of supreme ability;” “a rare poet of the violin” reported The South China Morning Post; “Morgenstern played a program that tested every part of a violinist’s equipment and he did it all beautifully” wrote The Washington Post.

Mr. Morgenstern’s career has taken him to international venues including Wigmore Hall, London; Cultural Center Concert Hall, Hong Kong; the American Academy, Rome; Salone dei Cinquecento, Florence; El Teatro Sucre, Ouito; Arts Centre and State Theatre, Melbourne, Australia. He has also toured the U.S. extensively, performing in FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Jessica Kiger, 646.536.7864, Jessica@christinajensenpr.com Photo by Chris Lee. Available in high resolution at www.christinajensenpr.com recital and as guest soloist with many leading orchestras. Of his interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D Major the Santa Barbara News Press raved, “Violinist Morgenstern – that’s the name to remember. While he dazzled everyone with his dexterity, he realized all the artistic nuances. His bowing was magnificent; his tone just plain gorgeous.”

Mr. Morgenstern has also shared the stage with such eminent musicians as Philippe Entremont, Lynn Harrell, André-Michel Schub, Jeffrey Kahane, Sharon Isbin, and Heinz Holliger, and has collaborated with United States Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Yusef Komunyakaa and performance artist Laurie Anderson.

Mr. Morgenstern’s discography includes works by Beethoven, Fauré, Copland, Ravel, Kodaly, Sessions and the award-winning American composer George Tsontakis. His latest recording, 20th Century Duos for Violin and Cello, was the No. 1 classical CD for over a month on eMusic, the largest online store for independent music in the world, and was one of the top ten best selling classical music albums on Amazon.com. Of the CD The New York Times raved, “the music is terrific and the performances compelling on this surprisingly exciting and excellently engineered recording.” Mr. Morgenstern records for the MMC, Engine Company and Koch International Classics labels, and can regularly be heard on National Public Radio and classical music radio stations across the country.

In addition to performing, Mr. Morgenstern is the artistic director of the Reflections Series, which presents performances in New York, Florida, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Florence and Capri, Italy. The 2009-2010 season is inspired by art exhibits at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York and features solo and chamber music, with visual art, poetry, and prose from around the world, in combinations that invite the audience to reflect anew on universal themes. Mr. Morgenstern is also the co-founder and co-artistic director of Nine Circles Chamber Theatre, a creative organization dedicated to exploring the collaborative nature of inter-disciplinary performance, and of the Broyhill Chamber Ensemble, a diverse chamber group specializing in Classical, Romantic and contemporary works of mixed instrumentation.

Mr. Morgenstern’s many prizes and honors include a command performance for President Ford at the White House, Gold Medals in The Washington International and National Society of Arts and Letters Competitions, and the Jaycees of America’s “Outstanding Young American” award.

In 1998, Mr. Morgenstern appeared as violin soloist in U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky’s translation of Dante’s Inferno which toured the country and was broadcast on PBS and NPR, for which it received a Peabody nomination. The violin plays a central and unique role in this production and is an integral part of the dramatic action.

Highlights of Mr. Morgenstern’s recent seasons include performances with the Julliard Dance Company at Lincoln Center, NCNY Dance Company at An Appalachian Summer Festival and with the Brooklyn Ballet; the premieres of staged versions of The Epic of Gilgamesh, Venus and Adonis with Claire Bloom and John Neville, and Samuel Beckett at 100 at New York City’s 92nd Street Y and at Harvard University. Morgenstern’s performance in the Nine Circles Chamber Theatre production of When Samson Met Delilah toured Holland to rave reviews and his recent appearance in Toronto was broadcast throughout Canada on CBC. In addition, his “Falling Bodies,” an original Nine Circles Chamber Theatre work of music and words based on the lives of the scientist-poet Galileo Galilei and poet-scientist Primo Levi, sold-out performances in New York and is now touring internationally.

FLAMENCO (from guitarist.com) is a particular kind of music/dance (and some would say lifestyle) native to, but no longer restricted to, a small region of Andalucia in Southern Spain. Like American “blues” it probably has ancient antecedents, but as a distinct genre is only a couple centuries old. Not all Andalucian folk music is flamenco. Not all flamenco artists have been Andalucians (e.g., Sabicas), or even Spanish (e.g., Greco). Info continues here.

Brooks Reid Band performs Live at Smoke’t Southern Kitchen and Tap A Neighborhood BBQ Joint 1/16/10

SMOKE’T SOUTHERN KITCHEN & TAP SETS MIAMI ABLAZE

Sophisticated Spin on Classic BBQ & Soul Food Faves
Marks Uncharted Territory on Coral Gables’ Dining Scene

The culinary team behind South Miami’s highly-successful TOWN Kitchen & Bar (TOWN), “A Neighborhood Joint,” announced today the debut of their latest dining destination:
Smoke’t Southern Kitchen & Tap
1450 South Dixie Highway, Coral Gables
“A Neighborhood BBQ Joint.” With Smoke’t, co-owners Brandon Lurie, John Janette and Michael Altman, executive chef at both TOWN and Smoke’t, infuse cosmopolitan Miami with Deep South flavor, re-interpreted.

Through hundreds of tastings, Altman and his team developed Smoke’t’s inventive, Southern-inspired menu items, such as Pepper Jack Cheese-filled Hushpuppies, and BBQ Pork Red Neck Rolls with Blazin Sauce (a creative transformation of sushi from Japanese cuisine to down home BBQ flavored meats and fixins’ wrapped in sticky rice) filled with Cole Slaw, served with a Homemade Spicy BBQ Dipping Sauce.

“The menu was really important to us,” said Altman. “We wanted sophisticated southern food which, until now, didn’t exist in Miami.”

As pit barbecue is one of the most important styles of food in Southern cuisine, Smoke’t showcases various flavors from U.S. barbecue capitals, all prepared on its in-house smoker, including Shredded Brisket with a Texas style BBQ sauce, Kansas City baby back ribs, Memphis style dry rub spare ribs and Carolina pulled pork. Rated “Best BBQ Sauce” by Jack Daniels Grill Your Eats South Beach, Altman’s knock-your-socks-off original creation is featured in most of Smoke’t’s offerings.

Traditional specialties include deep fried chicken on waffles, brussel sprouts, country fried steak, cornbread, mashed potatoes, fried catfish and berry cobblers. Smoke’t also serves southern-influenced salads and sandwiches. Smoke’t has even created a kids menu since even kids can’t resist many of Smoke’t’s offerings. The adults won’t be able to resist either with Smoke’t’s affordable menu pricing.

At 5,000 sq. ft., Smoke’t has capacity for more than 200 guests. Lounge-style furniture, cozy banquettes and roomy tables ensure a right-at-home feeling, where patrons are the center of attention. Eclectic artwork, antique décor elements and clever, eye-catching design features, like in-wall wood storage (for the smokers), round out Smoke’t’s casual yet chic ambiance with a touch of whimsy. The restaurant also features a club-style sound system for upcoming LIVE, classic rock music performances on their stage that highlights a Yamaha piano.

Ten flat screen televisions, a shuffleboard table and outdoor seating make Smoke’t a perfect spot for a light bite or drink. Smoke’t’s bar features 12 beers on tap, in addition to the 87 other beer selections and food items on its extensive bar menu.

In the months ahead, Smoke’t will launch an extensive wine program.

Smoke’t Southern Kitchen & Tap is open: Lunch will be served beginning early February, daily from 11:30 AM to 5:30 PM.
Dinner: Sunday – Tuesday 5:30 PM – 10:00 PM

Tony Bennett Live in Concert at Adrienne Arsht Center 1/8/10

Friday, January 8 @ 8 p.m.
John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall

His initial successes came via a string of Columbia singles in the early 1950’s, including such chart-toppers as Because of You, Rags To Riches and a remake of Hank Williams’ Cold, Cold Heart. He had 24 songs in the Top 40, including I Wanna Be Around, The Good Life, Who Can I Turn To (When Nobody Needs Me) and his signature song, I Left My Heart In San Francisco, which garnered him the first two of his eight Grammy Awards.

Tony Bennett is one of a handful of artists to have new albums charting in the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. He introduced a multitude of songs into the great American Songbook that have since become standards for pop music.

Single tickets are now on sale for programs in the Orchestra’s fourth Miami Residency season, which includes a series of subscription concerts at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County as well as music education and outreach activities in the Miami-Dade community.

Cleveland Orchestra Miami Residency expands educational and community collaboration programs in the Miami-Dade community
The Orchestra’s Miami Residency continues to develop through expanded education and community programs that serve thousands in the Miami-Dade area. The Orchestra’s residency activities in Miami were conceived and made possible with the leadership of the Musical Arts Association of Miami, the Miami-based support organization dedicated to fundraising for the Cleveland Orchestra Miami Residency.
A new component of The Cleveland Orchestra’s Miami Residency in 2010 is an in-school performance by the entire ensemble, titled “Meet the Orchestra,” at Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High School, a Miami-Dade County Public School. Music Director Franz Welser-Möst and the full Orchestra will participate in this historic event.
Other educational activities in January include curriculum-based programs with “I Have a Dream” students at Hibiscus Elementary School in the Miami-Dade County Public Schools district and with students from various schools at Coconut Grove Cares/The Barnyard, and an orchestral and teacher workshop at Coral Reef Senior High School. Numerous in-school activities are planned, including coaching sessions with orchestral students at New World School of the Arts as well as “Musical Rainbows,” lively programs that introduce children to instruments of the orchestra, one at a time, at four Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Activities with Miami-Dade County Public Schools are supported by an Access to Artistic Excellence grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
In 2010, community partnerships will expand beyond inaugural partners (the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County, University of Miami Frost School of Music, New World Symphony, and Miami-Dade County Public Schools) to include Coconut Grove Cares/The Barnyard, the Miami-Dade County Department of Public Affairs, Miami Music Project, Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Overtown Youth Center, Sunday Afternoons of Music, Arts for Learning, Miami Music Mentors, and the Archdiocese of Miami.
Since the beginning of The Cleveland Orchestra’s Miami Residency in 2007, The University of Miami Frost School of Music has been an important institutional partner. In 2010, Frost School of Music residency activities will include choral conducting coaching sessions with Cleveland Orchestra Director of Choruses Robert Porco, a chamber composition reading session, and a series of masterclasses and forums, including a Music Education Forum led by Cleveland Orchestra Director of Education and Community Programs Joan Katz Napoli.
Support for the Miami Residency is provided by the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, and the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners. The 2010 Miami Residency sponsors are Feldman Gale, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, and Northern Trust. The residency media partners are Classical South Florida 89.7 FM, WLRN, The Miami Herald, and El Nuevo Herald.

Giant Step is hosting the New Year’s Eve party you don’t want to miss in Miami. We are back after last year’s epic celebration, which included performances from The Roots, Janelle Monáe and DJ Bobbito. This year, Giant Step brings in 2010 with a bang with Common and Rye Rye.

Common will be performing live in The Florida Room, which only holds 200 people. It’s going to be like having this Grammy Award-winning artist play with his killer live band in your living room, with all your friends in it. Open bar from 10 PM – 1 AM. Get your tickets early as this will sell out. Tickets start at $275.00.

Outside by the pool, we will have Rye Rye ringing in the next decade. The Baltimore native and protégé of M.I.A. is one of the artists we’re tipping for success next year. FREE but you must RSVP for Rye Rye.

So if you want your NYE to be hot, book your ticket to Miami and join the Giant Step party!

BAND BIOS:
Break Science is the culmination of a career of beat bending by its brainchild, Adam Deitch. Whether performing a DJ set with drums/programming or helming a live band, Break Science is club music in the vein of a “live mix tape,” blending live trip-hop, broken-beat, dub, drum & bass and hip-hop. The live band features some of the most talented musicians on the New York scene today (sidemen and producers for the Fugees, G-Unit, Matisyahu and more). Guests have included luminaries such as Wyclef, Matisyahu, Rob Swift of the Executioners and Talib Kweli. Adam Deitch, the son of two professional funk drummers, first picking up sticks at the age of two. Adam’s career crosses genres but has focused on hip-hop, funk and jazz, where he’s played the role of both drummer and producer. Inspired by hip-hop at an early age – in particular, by Public Enemy and Eric B and Rakim – Adam began his production career by making loops on a tape deck in his bedroom. He’s gone on to produce tracks for some of today’s top emcees, including 50-Cent, Redman, Talib Kweli, Snoop Dogg, KRS-One, MF Doom, J-Live, Jurassic 5 and Immortal Technic.

Check out Break Science.

BoomBox is Producer/Engineer/DJ/Drummer Russ Randolph and Producer/DJ/Vocalist/Guitarist Zion Rock Godchaux. This pair of dynamic artists uses their rich musical history and their vision of music and popular culture to deliver a style of music distinctly different from anything heard or seen in music today. This signature sound and show brings live music to a new, elevated level. BoomBox evolved through the common visualization of two forward-thinking artists from diverse musical backgrounds. Raised by supportive and musically inclined parents, both Godchaux and Randolph had an obsession with music at very young ages. Godchaux, who grew up with deeply embedded rock and roll roots, began playing drums at the age of two, and played guitar and wrote his own songs as a teen. During the 90s, Godchaux was a well-received touring DJ based out of the San Francisco area. Randolph began as a young drummer, but it’s what was happening behind the scenes that attracted him most. As much producers as they are musicians, it is Randolph’s knack for engineering, Godchaux’s understanding of soundscapes and the duo’s rich ability to improvise live that keeps BoomBox resonating at higher levels.

Check out BoomBox at.

Consisting of Michael Travis and Jason Hann of The String Cheese Incident, EOTO mixes the organic sounds of live drums, keyboards, vocals, bass, percussion, and guitar through a variety of programs and gadgets to create a style of music that is more likely found in a dance club, then a live music theater. What sets EOTO apart from other artists in this emerging genre is how the music is created. While some artists may spend hours pre-mixing samples and elements of music for their live show, EOTO uses nothing pre-recorded, giving them the ability to approach each song with on-the-spot spontaneity and 100% live improvisation.

Javier Ruibal to perform at Kimbaracumbara 12/4/09

fundarte_javierruibal1
Have you ever felt your senses begin to cloud because of a poem or a melody? Have you ever felt the sensation of listening to a voice that takes over you? It is the result of a lifetime of hard work, years and years of struggle, of moving verses, a gift for the eyes and the ears, a gentle caress for the soul. Javier Ruibal has the power to engulf each new guilty party….. It is a crime to not know his music, to not have entered into his world of fusion, into his labyrinth of beautiful words…. With every strum of his guitar, with every lyric, he is able to take us into a world full of color, of “tobacco and Spanish wine,” a world with stories of prohibited love, a world of landscapes which seem to be created by the images of its own verses, a world of insatiable longings, of lost souls… His voice invites us to journey into his dreams, his rhythm fills the music lover with pleasure, and even the most stubborn of listeners are captured by what they hear and feel. He finds himself surrounded by the most happening of grooves, the most happening musicians, and in the top international stages, he is considered the most organic of artists in this world full of jealousy and betrayal. Journey into his music and allow his magic to engulf you. You will become one of many, but he will make you feel like you are the only one. There is room for you here, and you can expect to stay forever.

La Excepción, the Spanish leading flamenco hip-hop band will have a double take in Miami with the presentation of the movie “El Truco del Manco” where the band’s mastermind “El Langui” is the leading actor. The movie was awarded 3 Goya Awards for best direction, actor and theme song. www.eltrucodelmanco.com

La Excepción (The Exception That Proves The Rule) is a rapband from Madrid, composed of two MCs: El Langui (Juan Manuel Montilla) and Gitano Antón (Antonio Moreno), and DJ La dako style (Javier Ibañez). They started a small revolution in the Spanish hip-hop scene, opening new doors with a very self-assured and personal style that integrates flamenco, Cheli slang, and a lot of humor, without losing the social critique so central to hip-hop. They have made, from a very local identity, a universal rap that has become popular around the whole country and has achieved rankings not normally held by hip-hop. They won Best Album of the Year in Rolling Stone Magazine for their first work “Cata Cheli”. www.laexcepcion.net

DePedro may be the first solo album for the man behind the name, Jairo Zavala, but in no way is it his debut. Already a celebrated recording artist in Spain, where he was born and raised, Zavala has spent the past two decades playing, writing, and performing with bands like Amparanoia, Vacazul, Los Coronas, and Calexico. The Miami concert will feature Martin Wenk from Calexico. DePedro is his most personal work, with songs written from his own experiences, his own thoughts and feelings, the music he’s looked to – from Afrobeat to flamenco to prog to pop. The inspirations are simple, the everyday things we all experience that unite and define us as human: regret, memory, love, fear, loss, and happiness. Jairo Zavala is a National Geographic World Music recording artist. www.myspace.com/myspacedepedro

Direct from Havana Septeto Nacional Ignacio Piñeiro to perform in Miami 11/21/09

Septeto Nacional Ignacio Piñeiro in Concert!
Saturday, November 21st – 10:30 PM
at Hoy Como Ayer, 2212 SW Calle 8, Little Havana, Miami
Reservations: 305. 541.2631

Septeto Nacional Ignacio Piñeiro are paragon interpreters of son, Cuba’s national music genre par excellence. Decades before the Buena Vista Social Club, the septet performed the compositions of its namesake, transforming them into international standards of the son tradition.
Septeto Nacional, was formed in 1927 by the first superstar of Cuban son, Ignacio Piñeiro. Born and raised in the working class Havana neighborhood of Pueblo Nuevo, Piñeiro epitomized the urban sonero. He started out as a brilliant rumbero, and he was a well-known akpón or lead vocalist of the santería chant tradition.
A bassist, vocalist and composer, he composed Échale salsita, perhaps the best known son of all time, and the source, according to some, of the term salsa by which son’s successor was to be known. The tune tells the story about a night out on the town and the savoring of the finest sausage in the world; it was appropriated by George Gerschwin who worked its theme into his famous “Cuban Overture.”
Another of Piñeiro’s tunes, Suavecito, relates how delightful it is to dance son tenderly embracing one’s partner and confining one’s movements within the perimeter of a single floor tile. Its enchanting lyric, el son es lo más sublime para el alma divertir (son is the most sublime thing to entertain the soul), has become a mantra for son aficionados throughout the world. Among Piñeiro’s most popular opuses are Esas no son cubanas, Bardo, No juegues con los santos and Coco mai mai.
Many credit Piñeiro with being the first to introduce the trumpet to the traditional sexteto, thus creating the septeto format which endures to this day. He is also credited with making son music acceptable to all strata of Cuban society when he took Septeto Nacional to the World Exposition in Seville in 1928 where it created a sensation. Until then, son was the music of workers and peasants. Like jazz and tango, it was also the music most associated with houses of ill repute; it was even banned in Havana until the mid 1920’s. But the recognition son gained when Septeto Nacional visited the “Mother Country” was the seal of approval which paved the way for son to be played and danced at high society ballrooms and country clubs.
After Piñeiro’s death in 1968, the septet had a succession of leaders of renown, including guitarist/composer Rafael Ortiz, legendary rumbero Carlos Embale, and guitarist Richard Aymee Castro. In its current configuration, the Septeto Nacional is directed by bongo virtuoso Francisco Oropeza. Now more than eight decades after its founding, Septeto Nacional Ignacio Piñeiro is a national treasure interpreting a timeless repertoire to the delight of audiences and dancers throughout the world.

Program to promote Spanish culture.
At CCEMiami. Free Admission
Info: Tel. 305 448 9677

Eliseo Parra is one Spain’s leading performers and researchers of folk music. He has traveled to small villages to rediscover old songs, musical instruments and learned how to play some instruments in the traditional style. He reconstructs folk music by adding modern elements. His background may seem surprising to some. He began as a rock musician and afterwards became interested in jazz and Caribbean rhythms. Eventually, he ended up rediscovering Spanish folk music.
Rosalia, Guitar player, songwriter, composer and vocalist, a truly original musician. With a fabulous energy and singular mastery of her instrument, able to un-earth the ancient popular music of her native Spain and embody it in an astonishing performance full of passion and mastery. Rosalia’s music is an inspired encounter of beauty, guts and virtuosity. Though educated with some of the bests musicians in the world, Rosalía’s songs reveal a truly un-affected, creative and brave artist who has become a cult musician for an international audience. Her music is a fusion of traditional Spanish Folk music that has been largely forgotten. The adaptations combine this folk heritage, which is not derived from Flamenco, with jazz and Latin colors. She has taken many sources and created a new musical vision enriched by her virtuosity guitar technique.

Sunday, October 11, 3:00pm
Concert – Contemporary Diverging Paths: An Eclectic Blend of Music from the 1920s-1960s
This unique program features music from the 20th century composed within a relatively short span of time, but completely different in nature.
Leo Ornstein’s Piano Sonata No. 4 reflects a neo-romantic style, while Alberto Ginstera’s Piano Sonata No.1 for Piano, Opus 22 incorporates folk tunes and rhythmic patterns strongly characteristic of Argentinean native music. David Rosenboom’s Is Art Is is an interactive multi- media composition encompassing a blend of experimental music from the 1960s, new techniques and notation for ensembles, cross-cultural collaborations, and computer music systems.
A not-to-missed contemporary showcase!

The Heavy Pets show at Tobacco Road 10/2/09

THP Photo Roxys 09 Full Band[44]
The Heavy Pets are playing at Tobacco Road on Friday, October 2 at 10 PM ($6 at the door) and it’s their last South Florida show before heading out on their Winter 2009 tour, which includes several stops with The Brew and Particle. “Sleep” and “Operation of Flight” off their album Whale are staples on Sirius/XM Radio’s Jam On and they have a new bassist, Justin Carney, cementing the line up.

The hardest touring jam band, The Heavy Pets, are playing Tobacco Road as the first stop on their Fall 2009 tour, which includes several dates with The Brew and Particle. “Sleep” and “Operation of Flight” off their double-disc, Whale, are staples on Sirius Radio’s Jam On and their live shows are a powerful explosion of funk-reggae and rock, that is never the same experience twice.

www.theheavypets.com

Based in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, The Heavy Pets have spent the last three years touring nationally behind their double-disc debut album Whale, and their newest release, the EP Slow Motion Conductor. Fronted by 5 songwriters and backed by these critically revered, and popularly celebrated recordings, The Pets have found a happy home on big stages across the country, as a supporting act (for the likes of Matisyahu, Umphreys McGee, Tea Leaf Green, Perpetual Groove and Assembly of Dust, Lettuce, Particle and Little Feat), and also performing a growing number of festival appearances (’09 Bonnaroo, ’09 Moe.Down, ’09 Summer Camp, ’08 SXSW Festival, ’06, ’07 & 08 Langerado Festival, ’08 Wakarusa, ’07 10KLF, ’08 Green Apple Fest in NYC, ’08 High Sierra, ’08 Gathering of the Vibes, and ’08 and ’09 New Orleans Backbeat Jazzfest). The Heavy Pets now boast the extra sex appeal of bassist Justin Carney.

“The Pets just might be a perfect jamband” – Dennis Cook, Jambase “My favorite new band to hit the scene” – Jonathan Schwartz, Sirius Radio Jam On 17 “…The greatest jamband to come out of Florida since, well, ever…” “They are an arena ready band without the arena. At its best the band is a living, breathing, force of nature-a whale.” – Dan Sweeney, Relix Magazine “Full blown musical salvation” “Funky loose limbed rock ‘n’ soul” – Jonathan Zwickle, Music Editor, Broward-Palm Beach New Times “Nice big balls to release a 2-CD, 20 track behemoth as their debut” “their future is bright” – Dennis Cook, Jambase “Some sort of funk-reggae rock hybrid that’s laid back and sexy” “I like” – Leslie Gray Streeter, Palm Beach Post.

Rosalia Roio and Eliseo Parra in Concert at Centro Cultural Espanol 10/8/09

Rosalia Roio and Eliseo Parra in Concert
Fri. Oct. 30 8PM at Centro Cultural Español

Two Concerts One Night featuring Russian Red and Alex*Cuba from Fundarte at Colony Theater 10/5/09

TWO CONCERTS ONE NIGHT! featuring Russian Red and Alex*Cuba
Thu. Oct. 15 8PM at Colony Theater
Two concerts at the beautiful Miami Beach’s Art Deco Colony Theater with some of the best of emerging Contemporary World Music artists! The night begins with Russian Red, the stage name for Lourdes Hernández, a singer-songwriter based in Madrid, Spain. Her beautifully crafted, minimal songs beam delicate folk harmonies and lustrous vocals, originally formed in 2007, by Lourdes and Brian Hunt. The moniker for Lourdes comes from a lipstick color she frequently uses. The evenings closes with Singer-songwriter Alex*Cuba who’s trademark sugarcane-sweet melodies, pop-soul hooks and rock chords subtly subvert commonly held notions of what Cuban music is. Alex is the vanguard, crafting a cross-cultural sound. Not tied to tradition, this Cuban-Canadian prefers his vintage Gibson over el sencerro (cowbell) anytime.

The COFFEE HOUSE GYPSIES
They have been active in Miami’s music scene since 1997 and they have performed in New York City, Hollywood, Tampa, and all over South Florida. They were one of the headliners for the Tobacco Road 96 Anniversary Party and in 2008 they became the only band to-date to win nine Status QuO South Florida Live Music Awards with nominations in ten categories.
After several limited-press LP and EP releases, The Coffee House Gypsies released a long awaited full-length album in 2008. The album was titled “The Artist” and featured 13 tracks of pop/rock fan favorites carefully laced between spoken word poetry bits. The release featured cameo appearances by other local Miami bands and artists and led reviewers and critics to say, “The music of the Coffee House Gypsies from the Southern tip of Florida is as magical as their name implies.” The album consists of all original compositions and one cover song: a version of Simon & Garfunkel’s Sound of Silence which Dirk Faes (of The Fleetwood Mac Legacy in Hoboken Belgium) called “his favorite version of the song ever.”
In 2009 South Florida’s Sun Sentinnel called the Miami band “a band of nomads who keep moving to different musical genres.” The Miami Herald said, “CHG’s sound is reminiscent of The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac and The Mamas and the Papas,” referring to them as “a quintessential jam band: they sometimes rock out with electric guitars and synthesizers or play mellow acoustic rhythms. Sometimes they even recite spoken word poetry between songs.”
The band now plays local venues regularly. Uva in Coral Gables and Sophie Moon showcases this band weekly all September-long as they prepare to release a new album in 2010. They are “a pop-rock-tinged acoustic folksy coffeehouse band” says Miami New Times, “Fans of Fleetwood Mac, the Mamas and the Papas, and 97.3 FM should dig this group without question. Their harmonies, both vocal and instrumental, are soothing and give a generally upbeat feel”

http://www.youtube.com/CoffeeHouseGypsies

The BAILOUTS
A Miami-based band that is doing classic hits with a modern edge, The Bailouts rose from the ashes of bands like The VoodooCasters and Wednesday’s Child. They began turning heads in the local scene early 2009 when they began appearing in local venues and music festivals. Fronted by powerful, versatile and engaging vocalists, the band performs a variety of cover songs while infusing them with originality and all new twists. Their rich sound, tight harmonies, and high energy performances set them apart from most bands in the circuit.
Like CHG, this band is not just fronted by one gender or one voice. With a Natalie Merchant stage vibe and a voice like Kate Pierson from the B52s (or old-school Pat Benatar) the group’s front woman Annie electrifies the stage while Bailout male vocalist Tony (previously of “Naked Bootleg”) takes the mic for the occassional male perspective. Electric guitar riffs and synthesizer pads fill the audible plane with this band’s signature “Bailout” Bang.
“We do some back and forth,” Tony says about the male and female lead vocal roles in this new up and coming act, “We even sometimes duet on songs like ‘Don’t You Want Me Baby’ by The Human League and ‘Stop Dragging My Heart Around’ by Tom Petty & Stevie Nicks. We sometimes even swap roles, like, I’ll sing ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’ by Britney Spears and Annie might do ‘Just Like Heaven’ by The Cure.”
The band rocks out on stages all across Miami, gracing venues such as Tobacco Road, Poprox, Little Hoolie’s, and more. Most recently they performed alongside The CHG at the 2009 Music Festival: 80’s Flashback. Their repertoire takes the audience on a musical journey through time and space, engaging the audience with familiar favorites and beloved classics that are hard to not sing along with. They welcome new listeners to a musical experience that is like no other…

“Open since 1912, Tobacco Road is Miami’s oldest bar, surviving hurricanes, prohibition and going through a long list of presidents dating back to William Howard Taft. Even if you stop by not to have a drink, the place itself is a historic attraction. With a full liquor bar that’s open until 5AM seven days a week and a kitchen that opens till 4AM offering NY Strips and one of the best burgers in the city, the Road is a winner to any and all”
(from ClubPlanet.com)

“You can find live entertainment any night of the week at Tobacco Road. Claiming the title of Miami’s oldest bar, Tobacco Road has hosted great entertainers throughout its 95-year-plus history, including artists like George Clinton and Koko Taylor. The upstairs Cabaret was the local watering hole during Prohibition to gangster Al Capone and his associates”

In 1999 the Coffee House Gypsies released their first studio project: a limited-edition indie LP titled “In Tenement Halls” that made its way across Miami’s underground like a brushfire. The CD featured cover photography by Miami’s Lori Diaz and audio that included a pre-Artist version of Tigerlilly (which later was remixed and included in the 2008 CHG album, The Artist) The LP also included the alterna-rock-sounding old CHG song, “Fly Away” (with Floridian minstrel, Danny Salazar). Frances Gronlier of the band “Pretty On Paper” also made vocal cameos throughout the disk and Frank Perez (who sang the duet with CHG’s Albert Damian on the 2008 Album’s CHG Simon & Garfunkel cover of “The Sound of Silence”) sang on the CHG’s only recorded piano ballad to-date: a song written by Albert Damian titled, “Good Enough” which was only released on the rare “In Tenement Halls” release.

The larger works of Richard Strauss, from tone poems to operas, are well known and loved, but his chamber works are just as magnificent yet much more obscure. His Sonatina No. 1, “From the Workshop of an Invalid,” was written during Strauss’ bout of the flu. Even when sick, Strauss wrote incredible music!

SEPHARDIC MUSIC – Romantic Songs of Spanish Jews
Montserrat Franco, Soprano
Claude Kadoch, Guitar & Darhukka
Free & Open to the Public

For centuries, the legacy and traditions of Sepharad (Spain in Hebrew) was transmitted through generations of Sephardic Jews on their Diaspora after they were ousted of Spain in 1492 and settled in several parts of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. They left Spain but never their language “Djudeo-Espanyol” also called “Ladino” (a language which defer from the Spanish or Castillan spoken by Christians at that time and which includes Hebrew elements and vocabulary from the local languages) neither the culture which includes an amazing oral tradition : tales, poems and songs or “Romanceros” just as the “Trovadours” will perform in the Middle Age.

The vast collection of Romances preserved and transmitted for generations will come back to life on September 27th when Singer “Montserrat Franco” will present in an unique venue accompanied by the Israeli Moroccan Artist Claude Kadoch. These songs express not only these historical changes but also the entire life-cycle of that people, with their moments of joy, sorrow and love, its festivities and celebrations. This rich and varied culture is the basis of the Ladino repertoire, a musical treasure that never ceased to grow in the new places where the Sephardic Jews settled.

About the Artist: Montserrat Franco, a graduated Vocal Professor, ethnomusicologist and grantee of several scholarships by the European Parliament in Madrid, Spain and the State of Israel researched about the Sephardic Romances and Traditions from 1999 to 2002.

She was commissioned by the State of Israel to perform around the world as a truly sephardic artist during International Literature Fairs and Symposiums of the Spanish Language always sponsored by the AECI (Spanish Agency of International Cooperation)
