Marks on paper, whether deliberately or accidentally made, become seeds of thought,
guidelines, if you will, for further interpretation in the process of creating. The skills for
thinking in two and three dimension are not natural companions or abilities accordingly
matched. Understanding space and how an object defines itself and its surroundings is
the thrust and challenge of a sculptor. But where does it begin?
The artists assembled in PAPER are all recognized for their work in sculpture and
installation. This exhibit at the Fredric Snitzer Gallery examines their other work, the
source.

Mark Atomos Pilon was born under the Northern Lights, in Canada’s mysterious north. Perhaps it’s a childhood dwarfed by the aurora borealis that made him seek out his alias. After graduating from art school, Mark was researching an art project when he stumbled across a Walt Disney book called “Our Friend the ATOM”. The Greek name Atomos leapt out at him. “It means indivisible, or the smallest possible object,” Mark explains. “Mystery and science are a good working combination.”

Now based on the West Coast, he sent his imagination into a future that may never arrive. Every aspect of his art is carefully computer drawn and then meticulously painted in acrylic layers, to give them a sharp, print-like synthetic quality.

Mark has worked in magazine design for over 15 years as a designer and illustrator. Today he is one of three creative directors for Vancouver’s Georgia Straight Magazine His commercial clients include IKEA, Walgreens, the Sierra Club, and Virgin. He continues to illustrate for magazines worldwide and paints for galleries across North America. His paintings are a natural transition from his editorial illustrations, which are still computer constructed.

Those paintings grew out of Mark’s love of underground comics, space-age record jackets, scooter culture, and Moog music. “I’ve always been interested in the graphic arts of the 50s and 60s. They always used the best colours and lines. I love the work of Gene Deitch, Mary Blair, BC Binning, and Jim Flora.”

His most recent pieces reflect a post-pop conviction with an dab of surrealism that casts aside logic to reveal slices of modern life projected from dark holes into a dreamy multicolored world. It’s a style that can be recognized in an instant, but will stay with you for a lifetime. However, it’s not for everyone – if you’re looking for institutional, naturalistic art, keep on walking. “I have a lot of people tell me their kids can paint better than me,” Pilon says with a laugh. “I’m okay with that.”

In 2006, Mark received the Best Illustration Feature award for “Running on Empty” at the Western Magazine Awards.

”Soul Without Face” leads us through the internal conflicts of modern man and his lost identity, tells us about the psychology of our era, where our desire to achieve live in a world where the most difficult to find is our natural and vital essence that which we call: soul.
In the words of filmaker/photographer, Lyndale Pettus:
“My photos are interiors and exteriors, daylight and night shots of angles of concrete, steel and glass full of endless repetition mixed with depth, light, and shadows. I have a love of architecture and consider it an attractive subject waiting to pose for my camera.”

Gallery Diet is pleased to present the first solo painting exhibition of NY-based artist JJ PEET entitled The Sunday Painter.

The Sunday Painter is part of an ongoing project in which PEET responds to contemporary social, economic and political events through the process of art-making. While PEET has previously dealt with these issues in a reactive manner using more immediate media such as audio, video, live broadcast and sculpture, The Sunday Painter is focused solely on the act of painting.

Painting, a very different type of practice, allows PEET to take a more contemplative approach to current affairs. This relates directly to the methods of the NY school of painters from the late 1950’s and early 1960’s in which artists were responding to a tumultuous cultural climate via painting. PEET will also explore the relationship of class and economics through the more high-bow leisure orientated act of painting versus the labor/working class act of making present in his previous project, The TV Show.

During the course of the exhibit, PEET will continue to work within a hidden painting studio that he designed to be modular and therefore mobile. The self-contained unit can be easily broken down and gives PEET a space that can be transported to different locations, allowing him to respond to political environments in specifics area around the world.

JJ PEET has exhibited in New York City at On Stellar Rays, where he is represented and is a graduate of the Yale School of Art’s prestigious MFA program. His work has been written about in Art in America twice and in Frieze.com, PEET’s work is in the permanent collections of The White House, The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and the Minnesota Historical Society.

Gallery Diet represents five emerging and mid-career artists including Brian Burkhardt, Charley Friedman, Richard Höglund, Abby Manock, and Daniel Milewski. Exhibitions from the gallery have and are scheduled to travel to institutions such as The University of Wyoming Art Museum (Brian Burkhardt ’09), the Benton Museum at the University of Connecticut (Abby Manock, ’10), and MARTE in El Salvador (Abby Manock, ’10 forthcoming).

Zachary Schomburg will present a reading as part of the University of Wynwood visiting poet series. Schomburg is the author of two collections of poetry, The Man Suit (Black Ocean, 2007) and Scary, No Scary (Black Ocean, 2009).

Dimensions Variable is pleased to present ThE FunnY GUY That Sticks His HAND IN the PAiNt BuckeT, a solo project by Miami based artist Carlos Rigau. The exhibition will run from May 8th through June 19th, 2010. Dimensions Variable is located at 171 NE 38th Street in the Miami Design District.
Schools, gyms, hospitals, penitentiaries. Organized institutional behavior. Violence restrained for the sake of any institution. Its bathrooms, the break rooms, the classroom… the furniture. Holding areas for personal belongings. Places for excretion …and masturbation. Places where instincts are displaced and replaced.
Upon entering the exhibition the visitor will be encountering sound sculptures that propel them toward violence, frustration, and the general impotence that take place in these communal/corporate spaces. Objects like air conditioning shafts, lockers and urinal dividers to name a few, serve as compact models of the disciplinary mechanism.

Carlos Rigau was born in 1978 and was raised in Little Havana in Miami Florida. Carlos graduated in 2002 from F.I.U. with a double major in Fine Art and Television Communications. In 2009 Rigau completed Hunters MFA program in NYC. Carlos has exhibited his work in Berlin, New York, Chicago and Miami. His work is in the collections of Joseph S. Berg and Jefferson Godard.

Dimensions Variable is an exhibition space in the Miami Design District interested in innovative new projects in contemporary art.
The intention behind Dimensions Variable is to feature projects by individual artists and collaboratives. Rather than showcasing group or solo exhibitions in the usual format, we are interested in challenging individuals or collaboratives to address our space spicifically and produce one cohesive project. Dimensions Variable aspires to provide a forum for the introduction of unfamiliar, complex, collaborative and multidisciplinary practices to a Miami audience.

KIKI VALDES: BACK IN THE CLUB DAYS
Live work from 2004 – 2006

The collection of work by Kiki Valdes that will be included in the show
“Back in the Club Days” at Cafeina Gallery is from the years the artist
spent live action painting at various nightclubs around Miami Beach and
New York between 2004 – 06. The work is intuitive and direct by
application of paint. The subject matter ranges from narratives of
Hispanic stereotypes amplified by motifs of Latin women and symbols of
Caribbean culture and folklore. Each work in the show was created in a
hurry and in limited time among party spectators.

Artformz has the pleasure of announcing the opening of “small wonders (art) salon”
On May 8th the gallery will turn its exhibition halls into one of the most energized and exciting exihibits this spring. Sixty-five of South Florida’s best local artists will be exhibiting affordable small jewels of artwork. The works will fill the wall space and the gallery will be converted into a cornucopian installation of diverse expressions. Small Wonders promises to be a sensory overload of visual offerings that will delight the public and document the pulse of current artistic practice in our community.

The exhibit will highlight artists from around South Florida who will be showing works in a multitude of media, including painting, drawing, collage, sculpture, ceramics, and printmaking. Many artists will be exhibiting works that are their latest explorations. Small Wonders aims to raise everyone’s respect for these thoughtful – coveted – irreverent – spontaneous – small works, and to showcase these works that are an important part of every artists practice as they experiment and explore ideas not connected to producing work for any specific market trend, nor for institutions or galleries.

Small Wonders has been curated by the member artists at Artformz. Each member artist invited a group of respected peers. Small Wonders is an experimental event, placing a finger on the pulse of what is happening now and showcasing it. This art belongs to “now”: small, but quick and directly to the point.

Artformz strongly encourages the sale of these very affordable works of art. The goal is to raise funds for South Florida artists and to support the Artformz yearly community projects including the upcoming International Artists Exchange. “ArtistaInvitaArtista” co-curated by Alette Simmons-Jimenez, artist and director of Artformz (Miami, USA) and Cristina Ghetti, artist and director of Red Nomade (Valencia, Spain). Artformz’ member artists as well as a delegation from Italy, will be hosted in Valencia by Red Nomade, Miguel Gago Albert, Cultural Council of the city of Godella, and La Casa de la Cultura de Burjassot in October of 2010. The scheduled art exhibit in Spain will be accompanied by panel discussions, artist’s talks, and introductions to local organizations and curators to broaden opportunities between participants. Artformz will in turn host the artist group from Spain, headed by Cristina Ghetti, and present an exhibit of their artwork at Artformz in early 2011. This event will coincide with similar cultural activities introducing these exceptionally talented artists to the Miami art scene.
