His big professional opportunity came at age of 18, being hired to play with NG La Banda, one of the most acclaimed Cuban orchestras ever. Felipe funded his own Orchestra called Oni-Ache, traveling to Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1992 for a musical exchange program with the University of Sao Paulo and went on to live in Brazil for seven years.

Around this time he kept on performing for two years with the New Cuban Quartet all over the world. In 2006 he arranged and played on Ignacio Berroa’s new album “Codes”, also released by Blue Note Records and nominated for a GRAMMY as well. By the end of 2007 his first solo album “Dimensions”, recorded in Brazil, was released. This project incorporates his Afro-Cuban roots with strong influences of Jazz and Brazilian music. “I can assure you no other place in the world deserves my solo debut more. I really hope that everyone who in one way or another has followed and supported my music through all these years can enjoy this album and receive my sincere thanks through all my music.”

She was born and raised in Cali and obtained a degree in Professional Music of Berklee College of Music in Boston. We have seen her as an actress and heard her unique voice in many TV productions from Colombia. “La Vida Se Va” is Barrios’s first solo album. Last album she delivered was 2005 when she was half of the tropical/pop duo Bachá which was nominated for a Latin Grammy Award. This new album has a very clean and beautiful voice, fresh and updated sound based on the folkloric roots from Colombia. Barrios tells us stories of our day by day life, in this world with a lack of affection but this big desire to find the true love.

Musica Aperta’s productions entertain and challenge audiences by presenting music along side complementary art forms such as drama, dance, and the visual arts. Musica Aperta’s belief is that music is relevant to all of us and that the barriers to a deeper experience of music – such as the formality and protocol of the concert – can be transcended by the innovation, energy and openness it brings to its performances. Musica Aperta’s activities are funded in part by the DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities, an agency supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Nicholas Payton concert South Florida Jazz Season Finale 6/12/10

Information from www.JazzBluesFlorida.com
Nicholas Payton concert
Rose and Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center on the Nova Southeastern University campus
3100 Ray Ferrero, Jr Blvd in Davie 33314.

South Florida JAZZ welcomes arguably the most important trumpet player in jazz, Grammy-winner NICHOLAS PAYTON who is making only his third excursion into the area. Mr. Payton performed in 1998 and 2000 for the organization at the Hollywood Jazz Festival.

South Florida’s premier modern jazz organization is privileged to feature Mr. Payton and his band, as they come off a world tour. Payton is among the most influential artists in the modern jazz genre, and maintains his New Orleans feel and authenticity in the modern idiom. This concert takes place at the 500-seat Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center on the Nova Southeastern University campus, 3100 Ray Ferrero, Jr Blvd in Davie 33314. Tickets are $35 ($25 for South Florida JAZZ members and $10 for students of any age with I.D.) and may be purchased from the Broward Center Box Office by calling 954.462.0222 in Broward County; also toll-free at 877-311-SHOW, as well as online at: southfloridajazz.org, the presenting organization’s official Web site.

Since 1994, when Nicholas Payton made his recording debut as a leader with From This Moment, the trumpeter has been lauded as a significant, top-tier voice in jazz. Even though he started out as a “young lion,” heralded as one of the new-generation guardians of the hard bop flame, Mr. Payton consistently committed himself to discovering his voice outside of the strict confines of that rearview mirror approach to the music. It was early on that curve that he performed for South Florida JAZZ in 1998 and again in 2001, dazzling the audiences with his pure tone and soul. With his huge, burnished tone and full command of trumpet history from Satchmo through Freddie Hubbard, Mr. Payton has firmly established himself as one of the premier jazz artists of our time.

While his jazz journey has taken him down many roads – from heritage artist to electric experimenter – the 35-year-old trumpeter has arrived at a new plateau of jazz maturity. “As a musician, as an artist, you’re always trying to zero in on the bull’s-eye as a means of becoming a better version of yourself… The approach and the ideas of my music have become more singular, more cohesive. I had no agenda in terms of a specific genre or style, only to be true to who I am now.”

Born into a musical family and mentored by Ellis Marsalis at the University of New Orleans, Mr. Payton was well prepared to leap into the jazz fray when he emerged on the New York scene in the 1990s. He impressed Wynton Marsalis and was a regular in the early years of programming at Lincoln Center. Payton put his own spin on New Orleans-associated music. Over the next several years, Payton continued to hone his craft working with Hank Jones, Elvin Jones, and Ray Brown, and collected a Grammy with Doc Cheatham. In 2003 he boldly moved beyond the straight-ahead, mildly shocking the jazz world with his adventurous and exhilarating plugged-in band infused with elements of hip-hop, electronica, and effects-driven trumpeting.

This foray was transitory as he struggled with his role as torchbearer for the mainstream, fairly predictable, and somewhat stale jazz, while striving to carry on the experimentations of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Weather Report; even incorporating elements of R&B and soul. Mr. Payton says he is, “most solidly in a place where I’m coming to terms with who I am. I’ve weeded out those things that don’t feel right for me. I’m not out to try to impress and I’m not worried that what I play is going to upset some people. I want to write and play music that speaks for me and means something to me, that I feel passionate about.” He has found peace.

Grooves are central to his newest project. Mr. Payton states, “I want that dance element that was there at the roots of jazz. I feel a lot of jazz has gotten away from that legacy.” It is not a common sentiment, but not an invalid one, either.

YV AND BROTHER K write folk songs borne from their wanderings across the globe. Both are haunted by the sights, sounds and people who have become embedded in their music, producing a sound as varied as their backgrounds: stomping blues, reflective ballads, mariachi-gone-punk. Armed with guitars, spare strings, and dreams and visions, they’re setting out from their present homebase in New York City to conquer the Southeast this summer, bringing their musical lunacy to Luna Star Cafe on June 23. You’ve been warned.

The Miami Herald and Miami New Times both compared The Coffee House Gypsies to the likes of Fleetwood Mac and The Mamas and The Papas, calling them a “quintessential jam band” while music critics said things like “the music of the Coffee House Gypsies from the Southern tip of Florida is as magical as their name implies.” The band also won the 2009 award for “Best Pop Band” at the South Florida QOOL Shows Awards.

The Largo show on Saturday promises to feature songs from The Gypsies previous two LP releases, as well as some fan favorites from their latest album “The Artist.” The performance will also sport some new songs expected to be on the new upcoming CHG album, and there will surely be some of the typical gypsy-jamming and improvising on stage as well. The band also boasts a collection of 60 covers that they call pull from during the show. The show is admission free and all ages are welcome to attend.

During the concert Pontunes offers a free sunset cruise to anyone wanting to tour Largo aboard The Queen Anne’s Revenge II ship. Guests should call ahead to reserve their spot on the boat (305-451-0864) and arrive 90 minutes prior to sailing for sign-in.

The Coffee House Gypsies invite everyone to visit www.CoffeeHouseGypsies.com and download some FREE original music before the show. The website also features live videos and more.

The work of songwriter and singer Ramon Mejía (PERROZOMPOPO) is hugely marked by the recent history of Nicaragua. War, poverty, dictatorship, Church, the lack of education, friends, love, disappointment, and many other concepts and experiences are mixed with rock, melodic ballads, rap and reggae in a clear vindictive music. Perrozompopo, brother of the singer Luis Enrique, performs a urban Latin American music that talks about the stories of people that crowd the streets of many impoverished Central American cities.

DJ SPAM blends improvisational electronic elements and turntables with latin, funk, hip hop and dub to create what he calls an electronic descarga. It’s not a known genre. It’s hard to describe. It attracts many types of people. But as you look out and see people dancing salsa, next to break-dancers, and festival-goers driving for hours to catch a show – you know something very special is going on.

Miami is now home to Atlanta’s hottest electroacoustic band, Stokeswood. The group will push their deeply layered sound into the realm of dance-beat-laden, synthesized rock with live performances every month in the Magic City. The band’s Miami residency began at The Florida Room at the Delano in March 2010 and will continue each month at many of the city’s diverse venues. Stokeswood’s ultra-modern vibe compliments the Miami nightlife experience. This synergy is set to expose the city to a cutting-edge sound and augment its already vibrant live music scene.

About Stokeswood:
Atlanta-based Stokeswood’s independently released album, Carassia, is like a sonic excursion between the lines of a poet’s story-telling prowess. Thoughtful introspection on the human condition is amplified and challenged by the layered accents of electroacoustic guitars, pianos, synths, strings and drums. The soulful and captivating vocals of Adam Patterson carry each melody flawlessly through the rhythms and musical harmonies of each track. From start to finish, the album sparkles with intelligent musicality and impressive originality that sets Stokeswood apart. The band is currently recording its second studio album slated to debut in Fall 2010.

“Stokeswood is a marvel to watch, as they switch between instruments, giving up their spot on keys, synths and guitar like a game of musical chairs, all the while keeping up an irresistible, danceable backbone to the imaginative melodies and powerhouse, gut-wrenching vocals of Adam Patterson. The band undeniably owns the room with their unique unpredictable sound, expressive beats and high- energy presence. The new songs were infused with confidence in a sound that can only really be called Stokeswood’s.” – Performer Mag

Dhrupad style of vocal is 5000 years old tradition of Indian classical music, and the Gundecha Brothers are amongst the most respected and active vocal performers of the Dagar tradition of Dhrupad. They studied under the eminent gurus, Zia Mohiuddin and Zia Fariduddin Dagar and Srikant Mishra.
Umakant and Ramakant possess gifted voices with strong lower registers.
The Brothers have worked to expand the Dhrupad repertoire by incorporating texts by Hindi poets, such as Tulsidas, Padmakar and Nirala; they are probably the most recorded Dhrupad singers in India. The Gundecha Brothers have come to be regarded as a third force, on par with the senior and junior Dagars. Akhilesh Gundecha learned pakhawaj (percussion) playing from Shrikant Mishra and Raja Chhatrapati Singh JuDeo. He has also received scholarships from Ustad Allauddin Khan Sangeet Academy, Bhopal, and the government of India.

Last December, at 11.8 percent, the Florida unemployment rate was the highest it had ever been since 1975: up 0.3 percent from November and a whopping 4.2 percent from December 2008. The Examiner referred to Miami-Dade as “one of the places most affected by the nation’s economic downturn.” Serving the South Florida community since 1960, Camillus House is a non-profit organization that provides humanitarian services to men, women and children who are poor and homeless. Camillus offers a full continuum of services that includes food, shelter, housing, rehabilitative treatment, and health care. Each service is carried out with the deeply held belief that every human being deserves love, respect and an opportunity to live a dignified life.

Active in Miami’s live music scene since 1997 they have performed in New York City and all over South Florida. They were the only band to-date to win nine Status QuO South Florida Live Music Awards with nominations in ten categories. In 2009 South Florida’s Sun Sentinnel called them “a band of nomads who keep moving to different musical genres” and The Miami Herald said “CHG’s sound is reminiscent of The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac and The Mamas and the Papas,” referring to them as “a quintessential jam band.” Miami New Times said “Fans of Fleetwood Mac, the Mamas and the Papas, and 97.3 FM should dig this group without question. Their harmonies, both vocal and instrumental, are soothing and give a generally upbeat feel”

Band music, free downloads, and online videos are available at: www.CoffeeHouseGypsies.com

Camillus House is the largest and most comprehensive provider of humanitarian services to persons who are poor and homeless in South Florida. Established in 1960 to meet the needs of Cuban exiles, Camillus has grown from a small soup kitchen into a full service agency offering comprehensive services countywide. Today, Camillus serves more than 12,000 persons each year at 16 locations throughout the County, and each night, more than 1,100 persons rest safely under a Camillus roof. The services offered by Camillus House and sister agency, Camillus Health Concern, include housing, primary health care, behavioral health treatment, employment services, and basic emergency services such as food, clothing, shelter and companionship. Camillus’s mission is to serve the hardest-to reach and poorest members of the community by giving them the hope and support they need to begin the long and often difficult transition to a new life and ultimate self-sufficiency.

Last year Camillus provided: 600,000 free meals. 4,700 patients quality health care through Camillus Health Concern. 110 persons substance abuse & mental health treatment (8 of every 10 successfully graduated). 280 persons successfully placed in gainful employment. A new Courtyard program which provided 740 street homeless men and women food, clothing, medical care, security services as well as pathways into housing, treatment and job placement to break the cycle.
For more information about Camillus visit: www.Camillus.org or email: SamGil@Camillus.org

Tobacco Road is Miami’s oldest bar. It has survived hurricanes and prohibition and seen eras of presidents dating back to William Howard Taft. Throughout its 96+ year history, artists like George Clinton and Koko Taylor have made appearances at the local venue, turning it into ‘the place where local legend and history meet live music’. Most recently Miami’s Cuban singer and icon, Gloria Estefan, was seen celebrating her birthday at The Road. And the upstairs Cabaret (where the concert will take place) is rumored to have once been the favorite hangout of gangster Al Capone and his associates.

For more information about Tobacco Road please visit www.Tobacco-Road.com or call 305-374-1198.

Check donations for Camillus will be accepted at the CHG concert and should be made payable to CAMILLUS. Local companies wanting to make a corporate donation to Camillus can get show tickets for donating. For more information about donations for tickets please contact TIX@CoffeeHouseGypsies.com.

Second annual event featuring diverse genres of new music will take place November 12-14 as key part of “Live Music Month in Miami”

Soul Of Miami Showcase!

MMF partners include Miami New Times, The State of Florida Film & Entertainment Office, Miami-Dade County Office of Cultural Affairs, The City of Miami Office of Cultural Affairs, The Miami-Dade Office of Film and Entertainment, The Miami Downtown Development Authority, The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau, FilMiami

Organizers of the second annual Miami Music Festival will present more than 500 performances by new and developing artists in an expanded roster of venues throughout the city. The showcase will take place November 12-14 during the newly designated “Live Music Month in Miami” and will include two daytime sessions on five stages in Bayfront Park and a show at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts.

A music industry and artists’ conference will take place at the Hyatt Regency Miami, the festival’s headquarters hotel, Friday, November 12, and Saturday, November 13. Musicians may submit showcase applications, register for the conference, and reserve discounted stays at the Hyatt at miamimusicfestival.org beginning May 15.

Partners include Miami New Times, The State of Florida Film & Entertainment Office, Miami-Dade County Office of Cultural Affairs, The City of Miami Office of Cultural Affairs, The Miami-Dade Office of Film and Entertainment, The Miami Downtown Development Authority, The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau, and FilMiami. The Miami Music Festival and Conference is also produced in cooperation with the Recording Academy, The Urban Network, and performing rights organizations ASCAP, BMI, and SoundExchange.

Performing at showcase festivals has become important for independent musicians who are using new media tools to produce, distribute and market their own music in an effort to reach broad audiences and raise awareness among music industry executives. Events such as the MMF attract discerning audiences to hear new acts or new music from established acts. South by Southwest in Austin, Texas, is just one example of a gathering that has provided opportunities to network with other artists and gain distribution opportunities.

“The MMF will again present an amazing array of rock, alternative, and singer/songwriter acts but will feature in equal measure Latin, urban, Caribbean, and jazz artists,” said the festival’s CEO, Irwin Kornfeld. “Miami’s live music scene continues to develop and grow, and the MMF is growing with it.”

Said Miami New Times publisher Kevin Thornburg: “As the most authoritative voice in the marketplace for the live music scene, we are honored to be a part of the Miami Music Festival. Miami already hosts an array of world-class film, art, food, and electronic music events, and the only missing piece was a live music event like the MMF.”

“The development of Miami’s live music community is important to the vibrancy of this city. Our great clubs and restaurants are the reason why so many people want to visit and live here, and live music is again becoming one of their best attractions. This is why our organization and so many others here have been supporting the growth of The Miami Music Festival. We welcome the festival’s artists, sponsors and members of the world’s music industry and look forward to offering them Downtown Miami’s warmest hospitality,” said Alyce Robertson, Executive Director of the Miami Downtown Development Authority.

The inaugural MMF in December 2009 attracted more than 18,000 attendees to see 270 acts in 75 shows on 25 stages. Here is some feedback from last year’s participants:

“I have been managing bands for eight years and brought SELBY to your festival. We had a great experience with the venues, the conference, and your MMF Staff. Because of their appearance, NBC has asked SELBY to perform at Relay for Life in February and to perform again on the NBC Miami 6 morning show. Thank you, MMF! The conference was well-thought-out, as so many aspects of the industry were covered — the A&R and publishing segments were standouts. We were well informed and left with the tools and connections promised. Thank you for a great experience, and we hope to be back @ MMF next year!” — Annie Robinson, CEO of Cobalt Management, for SELBY

“After our MMF show, a member of Diddy’s camp introduced himself and booked us on the spot for Diddy’s Superbowl party for music industry insiders and celebrities!” — the Basiqs

“Our band had a great time and appreciate all your efforts in making Miami Music Festival a great success. From the D’Addario Stage to the Rolling Stone Showcase, it was terrific. We would love to come back for Miami Music Fest 2010” — the Adam Lasher Band

“Thanks for having us out for the MMF 2009. We appreciated the support. MMF Music conference was especially helpful. We attended many panels and received incredible knowledge. We look forward to MMF 2010. Thank you!” — La Paz

“First off, let me say how PROUD I am that the MMF was even thought about! I left South Florida in an attempt to get my music heard. I have been singing back-up for Joss Stone for six years. I was so excited to learn of this conference. I want to thank the organizers of this event for showing what South Florida has to offer. I also need to say what a BRILLIANT idea it was to utilize different venues so that these independent artists can see what venues are out there and give the venue owners a chance to see what quality artists they can have play there. I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the MMF, and I hope to be involved with MMF again. Thank you for the opportunity!” — Antonia Jenae

Conference speakers and festival sponsors will be announced in the coming weeks.

The Miami International Piano Festival is celebrating its 13th Season in 2010. The May Discovery Series is held at the intimate Lincoln Theater (home of the New World Symphony) on Miami Beach. The Series opens with a sure crowd-pleaser that features works by two composers who are both celebrating 200 year anniversaries in 2010: Chopin and Schumann. To pay tribute to these prolific composers of the Romantic period, the Festival will present four fantastic pianists in one evening.
Kemal Gekic and Misha Dacic both hail from former-Yugoslavia and for this program Gekic will perform provocative Chopin selections (including Scherzo Op. 20 and Polonaise Op. 53) and Dacic tackles Schumann’s tour de force, “Humoresque.” Russian pianist Ilya Itin will offer his refined interpretation of several works by Chopin such as Fantaise in F minor and Waltz Op. 34 and Cuban legend, Jorge Luis Prats presents Schumann’s delightfully varied “Symphonic Etudes.” With so much talent and exquisite repertoire sharing the stage on one evening, this concert will likely run a bit longer than most.
On Friday, May 14th, the Festival is pleased to present the South Florida concert debut of Ran Jia (China). At twenty, Ms. Jia is already regarded as a striking musician with unusual natural abilities. Tan Dun hailed her a “piano poet with dramatic skill in music making.” Her program will feature four Sonatas by Scarlatti, Shubert’s Sonata in A minor Op. 42 and Le Tombeau de Couperin by Ravel.
The popular “Prodigies and Masters of Tomorrow” matinee concert on Saturday, May 15th will see the return of the astounding Aristo Sham (Hong Kong), now 14 years old. One could almost hear the jaws dropping at Aristo’s South Florida debut at the Festival last May. His current program will feature works by Scarlatti, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Barber and Albeniz. Families with children are encouraged to attend this concert which seeks to inspire the next generation of classical music lovers.
On Saturday evening, Spanish pianist, Claudio Martinez-Mehner will make his Florida debut. Winner of numerous prizes, Mehner recently resumed his career as a solo artist and has a respected reputation as a teacher and chamber musician. His Festival program will include Beethoven Sonata Op. 109, Schumann’s Sonata Op/ 14 “Concerto without Orchestra” as well as works by Janacek and Debussy.
This year’s grand finale and closing night “Chamber Music Extravaganza” will welcome Igor Gruppman back to South Florida. Many remember Mr. Gruppman as the Concert Master of the Florida Philharmonic and at present, he is artistic director of the Concerto Rotterdam chamber orchestra and concertmaster of the Rotterdam Philharmonic. He will be joined by his wife, violinist/violist, Vesna Gruppman who teaches at the Rotterdam Conservatory in the Netherlands. Joining the Gruppmans will be pianists Ilya Itin (Russia) and Jorge Luis Prats (Cuba) as well as a special guest cellist. The program will include Schumann’s Fantasy Pieces Op. 73 and a special String Quintet transcription of Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2. Rounding out the program will be selections by Brahms including the Piano Quartet in G minor Op. 25.
All concerts start at 8:00 p.m. except for the Saturday Matinee “Prodigies” program which begins at 2:00 p.m. A series of pre-concert Lectures and Master Classes are planned as part of the 2010 Miami International Piano Festival. The following programs are FREE and open to the public:
Friday, May 14th, 2010. 7:00 p.m. PANEL DISCUSSION: Artists and their representatives engage in a lively discussion about the challenges facing artists today, what steps are required for their continued success, how to avoid failing and also why so many have lost the drive, faith and motivation to continue concertizing.
Saturday, May 15th, 2010. 7:00 p.m. LECTURE: Frank Cooper, Research Professor of Music from the University of Miami What makes a musical personality? There are traits which distinguish musicians from the average woman or man, and traits which distinguish one musician from another. This lecture explores the characteristics that set composers and performers apart from all others, allowing for great esthetic achievements and for all too human failures.
Sunday, May 16th, 2010 7:00 p.m. FILM: “The World’s Greatest Musical Prodigies.” A three-part documentary produced by Britain’s Channel 4 Television, which is currently being distributed by American Public Television. Episode 1: Alex Prior travels to Miami at the invitation of renowned prodigy-hunter Giselle Brodsky, who runs the Miami International Piano Festival. Giselle has selected five of America’s most gifted young musicians, who have flown in from all corners of the States to audition for Alex.

Roger Waters was a primary creative force in Pink Floyd from 1965 to 1983. Pink Floyd’s recordings were moderately successful through 1972. But The Dark Side of the Moon (March 1973), for which Waters wrote all the lyrics and some of the music, was a commercial breakthrough that became one of the most successful albums in rock history. Following the release of The Final Cut, Pink Floyd broke up and its members launched solo careers. Waters re-emerged with The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking (April 1984), which went gold. Following the fall of the Berlin Wall, Waters organized an all-star performance of The Wall in Berlin on July 21, 1990. It was filmed and recorded, resulting in the album The Wall: Live in Berlin (September 1990).

Motivational Music Night for the Kids 5/14/10

“Motivational Music Night for the Kids” is going to be a very cool night of live music at the newly renovated Grand Beach Hotel at 4835 Collins Avenue. The event is a fund raiser for the The Motivational Edge’s summer music programs, of which Musical Missionary will hopefully play a part.

The Motivational Edge is one of Musical Missionary’s key partners. It is together with TME that Musical Missionary will be able to design and implement our own youth music programs as opposed to simply sponsoring kids in other programs. It will be a milestone for Musical Missionary to start its own youth music program, which can happen this summer with all of your support. With as little as $500, we can have our own summer class of 3 or 4 students learning how to play the keyboard and introduce them to the world of digital recording.

The more Musical Missionary supporters who come out to this event, the more money we will raise for our own youth music program this summer. Tickets are $35, which gets you dinner, 2 drinks and 4 hours of some of Miami’s best live music. There will also be cool items up for auction like hotel and cruise packages, sports memorabilia and a cash pot. A Porsche Boxster S will also be raffled off.

Matt Guitar Murphy to Play The Blues in Davie Florida 5/12/10

Matt “Guitar” Murphy
Big Dawgs 2
7357 Davie Road Ext., Davie FL 33024
$5, 7pm, May 12, 2010
Backed up by JC Crossfire Band & One Night Stan’s horn section The Hollywood Horns
Info provided by www.JazzBluesFlorida.com

Murphy has been living in South Miami since 2003 while recuperating in semi-retirement. In 2008 Tim O’Donnell from The Nouveaux Honkies coaxed Matt out to perform at a festival in Fellsmere, Florida. Since then Matt has performed with TNH at many venues throughout South Florida. O’Donnell’s label, Bluzpik Rekerdz, stepped up to put a booking agent and management in place and starting taping a Matt Murphy documentary which will finish filming at the Daytona Blues Festival on October 9, 2010.

Bluzpik President and Director of Artist Relations Leo Gale states, “It has been quite a unique experience working with a living legend and old school guitarist. There are always plenty of Blues Brothers fans at the shows and that is fun. But the real thrill for me is to watch the guitarists and other musicians in the crowd stand in awe with their mouths open. Matt has influenced generations of guitarists from Hubert Sumlin in the 50’s and Jeff Beck in the 60’s to future stars on the way up like Albert Castiglia and Tim O’Donnell. Mr. Murphy is healthy again, playing tremendously, looking forward to performing at big festivals and getting back into the studio.”

Known by millions from his role as guitarist in the smash movie “The Blues Brothers”, Matt “Guitar” Murphy is doing a final show locally before completing his comeback at the Chicago Blues Festival in June with his former band mate James Cotton. Matt is performing at major Blues Festivals this summer and fall for the first time since suffering a stroke in the early part of the decade. He will be performing with the James Cotton Band, The Legends Band featuring Pine Top Perkins, Hubert Sumlin and Willie “Big “ Eyes, and his Florida based band The Nouveaux Honkies over the summer and into 2011.

The May 12th show will kick off @ 8PM at Big Dawgs 2, 7357 Davie Road Extension in Davie Florida.

PREFUSE 73 BIO
“It’s hard to think of a name that carries as much weight in both hip-hop and avant-rock circles as Prefuse 73, who in the past year alone has been asked to remix TV On The Radio, Pelican, BLK JKS and Cornelius, not to mention his early collaborations with School of Seven Bells and Battles. These interactions have clearly helped to shape the evolving Prefuse 73 sonic aesthetic, which has expanded to include Herren’s twisted visions of prog-rock, “machine funk” and global psychedelia.
-Warp Records 2009

Producer Prefuse 73 (Scott Herren), also active as post-rocker Savath & Savalas, Miami-born, Atlanta-raised and Barcelona-resident, heralded laptop-based hip-hop with Vocal Studies + Uprock Narratives (2001), a tour de force of fractured, warped, incoherent stream of consciousness that mixed glitch music, deconstructed vocals and jazz patterns.

Annette Recommends Broadsword at the Carnival Studio Theater

Went to see Broadsword at the Carnival Studio at the Adrienne Arsht Center on Saturday, May 1st.  This was an awesome show! The acting, the writing and the music were all really good.  This being at the Carnival Studio it is very intimate and you really feel like you are in the basement with the actors, like you are peeking on a little bit of their life.  The final music performance is awesome,  I really wished I had a lighter to wave for an encore.  If you have an free evening this week I would suggest heading over to the Arsht Center and seeing Broadsword, this is one you don’t want to miss.

Broadsword will run Sunday, May 2nd, and then Thursday – Sunday, May 6th – 9th (two shows on Saturday).

Ballet Flamenco La Rosa Artistic Director Ilisa Rosal, and company singer/guitarist Paco Fonta, will present a lecture/demonstration on the Jewish Roots of Flamenco, as one of many offerings of the Guava Rugelach Festival at Temple Israel of Greater Miami.

A brief history of the development of the art of Flamenco and the influences that Jewish music and the Jewish experience in Spain had on the art form will be discussed, with examples of the music and vocals to illustrate.

PACO FONTA * SINGER AND GUITARIST
Paco Fonta met Ballet Flamenco Director Ilisa Rosal in Madrid in the early 1980’s when they worked together at tablaos and festivals for several years.

When Ms. Rosal founded Ballet Flamenco La Rosa in 1985, Paco Fonta was under contract to a local flamenco club, and he joined the company. They have worked together ever since on the many interesting projects the company has produced and created a great following for the high quality and pure excitement and beauty of their work.

Mr. Fonta is a rare talent in that he has mastery of both the guitar and singing, and his performances give the public a unique and valuable insight into this style of music. Mr. Fonta is in demand as a singer and guitarist for Flamenco companies throughout the U.S., and has started his own group Siempre Flamenco.

We’ve been away from home long enough– and to celebrate our return to the United States, we’re going to try and see as much of it as we can, as quickly as we can!
We’ll be touring the U.S. for the entire month of June, from New York to California and (almost) everywhere in between. And even better, our pals in Tokyo Police Club will be on board for most dates.

Redemption. Paranoia. Guilt. And brief glimpses of a better tomorrow, all cloaked in pop hooks that truly help the medicine go down.

What is this? Another lost LP from Brian Wilson’s sandbox phase? If only things were that simple. What we’re really alluding to here is Passion Pit’s first proper full-length, Manners, a bird-flipping break from the blogosphere by a 21 year old with much more on his manic mind than girls, girls, girls. You know, important matters, like the end of the world and learning to love someone other than the man in the mirror.

That’s the thing people missed about Passion Pit’s debut EP, Chunk of Change. While it was originally meant as a Valentine’s Day gift for a girlfriend who “put up with” frontman Michael Angelakos, that detail’s only half of a story that isn’t so cuddly when you consider the circumstances.

Tickets $20 advance through TransAtlanticFestival.com or 305-672-5202, Children under 12 – Free

The Rhythm Foundation kicks off its 8th annual Heineken TransAtlantic Festival this April with a two part series headlined by Colombia’s psychedelic cumbia band Bomba Estéreo and Mali’s world music sensation Vieux Farka Touré. In addition, Grammy-nominated Orquestra Contemporanea de Olinda of Brazil and Miami’s own two-time Grammy-nominated Locos Por Juana will join the festivities which have garnered much local and international attention for their eclectic music pairings.

The 8th annual Heineken TransAtlantic Festival is the sound of the world “right now” – the series of concerts and parties featuring modern world music proudly features innovative artists working in the beautiful collision between traditional rhythms and electronica/DJ culture. The series pays tribute to Miami as a true modern “TransAtlantic” capital, a crossroads of the Americas and Europe. It’s the hotbed of a young, club-crazy art scene, playground of the East, perched provocatively on the Atlantic Rim, where centuries of commerce and migration have formed a crossroads that unites Africa, Western Europe, the Caribbean, and the Americas.

The Rhythm Foundation, leading presenter of world music in South Florida, created the series in 2003 knowing that in Miami, there is a large audience of internationally-minded people who want to hear what is happening right now in our world. With this festival, The Rhythm Foundation showcases the city’s position as the hip center of a whole new generation of global music.

About Bomba Estéreo
Bomba Estéreo formed in the rich underground electronic scene of Bogota, Colombia in 2005. Guitarist Simon Mejia recruited fierce singer Liliana Saumet to join the group, and Bomba Estéreo expanded its “psychedelic cumbia” sound and captivating live show. The group plays an explosive dance-fusion of electronic dub and hip-hop, in a similar vein as M.I.A. and Santigold, mixed with classic Colombian rhythms like cumbia and champeta. The group made their US debut at SXSW in 2009 and garnered huge attention at LAMC in New York last summer. Myspace.com/BombaEstereo

About Vieux Farka Touré
The son of the revered Malian guitarist Ali Farka Touré, Vieux has stepped out from his late father’s massive shadow. Ali Farka Touré proved, in case anyone ever doubted it, that the soul of the blues could be found in West Africa. Vieux is turning heads with a more radical idea: that those western Saharan roots can be heard in everything from the jam band scene to Jamaican dub. The young Six Degrees Record artist and his band have caused a sensation at music festivals across the globe in recent years. He makes his Florida debut with this concert. VieuxFarkaToure.com

About Orquestra Contemporânea de Olinda
OCO brings together some of the best young musicians of Pernambuco, birthplace of classic Northeast Brazilian rhythms forro and frevo. The late legendary musical genius Chico Science left behind a supercharged music scene that fuses the rhythms of Pernambuco with drum & bass, rock and world grooves. In this music-crazed city filled with amazing horn players and percussionists comes Orquestra Contemporanea de Olinda, who has built a concise identity and huge following since their 2008 debut. Distributred by Som Livre, Brazil’s largest label, their CD was nominated for a 2009 Latin Grammy and was hailed by the New York Times. Now they embark on their US debut tour, including New York City’s Lincoln Center and Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Myspace.com/OrquestraContemporaneaDeOlinda

About Locos Por Juana
The two-time Grammy-nominated Miami-based band received this write up in the LA Times: “Blending relaxed reggae grooves with biting social commentary, hip-hop raps with brassy solos, Locos Por Juana pulls listeners into a reverse Gulf Stream churning through the Straits of Florida south to Jamaica, Venezuela and Colombia, and over to Puerto Rico, Locos Por Juana shows with every song that it has thoroughly assimilated its multiple musical fathers, with a Caribbean lilt and a rock-steady beat.”
Myspace.com/LocosPorJuana

About The Rhythm Foundation
The Rhythm Foundation, a Miami-based non-profit cultural organization, is the foremost presenter of world music in South Florida. It was founded in 1988 with the goal of increasing international awareness through live music. The Rhythm Foundation has presented more than 400 concerts, events and festivals by established and innovative artists from around the world. Special focus is given to those cultures connecting to South Florida audiences – music from Brazil, Latin America, Africa, the Caribbean, Asia and Europe. Many of the world’s established music legends have made their US and/or Florida debuts with The Rhythm Foundation. Considered to be one of the top world music presenters in North America, the organization has built strong name recognition and a dedicated audience over the last 22 years. Success is due to the selection of premiere artists and consistent quality of production. Naughty By Nature at Revolution Live 3/25/10

Naughty by Nature pulled off the neat trick of landing big, instantly catchy anthems on the pop charts while maintaining their street-level credibility among the hardcore rap faithful; one of the first groups to successfully perform such a balancing act. The group was formed in East Orange, NJ, in 1986, while all three members — MCs Treach (born Anthony Criss) and Vinnie (born Vincent Brown), and DJ Kay Gee (born Keir Gist) — were attending the same high school. Initially called New Style, they began performing at talent shows and were discovered by Queen Latifah a few years later; she signed the group to her management company and helped them land a deal with Tommy Boy Records. Naughty by Nature’s self-titled debut was released in 1991 and produced an inescapable Top Ten hit in “O.P.P.” (which supposedly stood for “other people’s property,” though a close listen to the lyrics revealed that the second P represented male or female genitals). “O.P.P.” made Naughty by Nature crossover stars, yet their ghetto sensibility and gritty street funk (not to mention Treach’s nimble rhyming technique) made them popular in the hip-hop underground as well. Treach began a secondary acting career in 1992, appearing in Juice; he would go on to supporting roles in The Meteor Man, Who’s the Man?, and Jason’s Lyric, among others.

Naughty by Nature repeated their success with the 1993 follow-up album, 19 Naughty III, which produced another ubiquitous crossover smash in the “hey! ho!” chant of “Hip Hop Hooray”; the album hit the Top Five and, like its predecessor, went platinum. 1995’s Poverty’s Paradise was the group’s final album for Tommy Boy; though it didn’t spawn any major hits, it went on to win a Grammy for Best Rap Album. A recording hiatus of several years followed; during that time, Treach pursued his acting career, most notably landing a recurring role on the HBO prison drama Oz; and Kay Gee greatly expanded his outside production work, helming records for Zhané, Aaliyah, Krayzie Bone, and Next, among others.

Tiempo Libre perform in Miami Beach at Byron Carlyle Theatre 4/3/10

New “Miami On Stage” Series Continues With Tiempo Libre Performing “Bach in Havana” on Saturday April 3rd at the Byron Carlyle Theater

The new Miami On Stage project, which features local performing artists on a regular basis in Miami Beach’s North Beach neighborhood, continues on Saturday, April 3 with the great timba band Tiempo Libre at the Byron Carlyle Theater. The evening features the Miami theatrical premiere performance of their Bach in Havana, a salsa meets Classical music mash-up based on the Grammy-nominated CD of the same name. The Miami On Stage series is produced by FUNDarte, one of South Florida’s most adventurous and successful presenters of alternative culture, especially with a Latin flavor.

The Cuban-born, Miami-based musicians of Tiempo Libre have catapulted onto the national stage with their clever, beautiful and danceable sound. With Bach in Havana, they took their love of the contrapointal Baroque music of J.S. Bach (having all been classically trained) and found a way to meld with the tropical, Afro-Cuban rhythms and instrumentation they usually perform. The resulting work – tuneful, playful and musically adventurous – has garnered praise and awards after being released by Sony Music. Ever Chavez, Executive Director of FUNDarte, says that, “Tiempo Libre is a Miami treasure who, with their genre-bending Bach in Havana, has received global acclaim. The nurturing of local artists who can then tour their work throughout the world is one of our goals with the Miami On Stage project.”

The Tiempo Libre concert begins at 8:00 pm at the Byron Carlyle Theater, located at 500 71st Street, on Miami Beach. Tickets for Tiempo Libre are $20 general admission, $15 students (under 25) & seniors (over 65) with I.D. Tickets may be purchased in advance through Ticketmaster at www.ticketmaster.com and by phone (800) 745-3000 (service charges apply). They are also available in-person at the Byron Carlyle the day of show and in advance at the Colony Theatre box office (1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach), Tuesday through Saturday, Noon to 5:00 pm (no service charges). A limited number of $15 discounted general admission tickets are also available for 33141 zip code buyers with I.D. in-person at both theater box offices only. More information about the Miami On Stage series and the upcoming Tiempo Libre concert can be found online at www.fundarte.us or by contacting FUNDarte at info@fundarte.us or (305) 316-6165.

Miami On Stage will continue on the first Saturday of each month, through June of this year. On May 1, again at the Byron Carlyle, there will be an evening with three solo Hip Hop theater artists, Rudi Goblen, Summer Hill Seven and Meshaun Lebrone Arnold. This program is co-presented with Miami Light Project. On June 5th there will be two performances Hilo,(Thread), by Jose Dominguez, directed by Lucia Aratanha, and Sipping Fury from a Teacup, created by Elizabeth Doud & Jennylin Duany and performed by Elizabeth Doud and Carlos Caballero. In addition to each Saturday’s featured performance, there will be free tie-in events throughout the week in the North Beach neighborhood, including panel discussions with the artists, special programs for youth and outdoor activities. These will include free yoga classes on the beach Mondays and Fridays at 7:00 am at Ocean Terrace and 73 Street, as well as a Farmer’s market in Normandy Isle Circle Saturdays from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Three years later the group was the First Prize winner of the prestigious 5th Banff International String Quartet Competition. The Amernet String Quartet has been described by The New York Times as “an accomplished and intelligent ensemble”, and by the Nürnberger Nachrichten (Germany) as “fascinating with flawless intonation, extraordinary beauty of sound, virtuosic brilliance and homogeneity of ensemble”.

The Amernet String Quartet was formed in 1991, while two of its members were students at The Juilliard School. Founding members Marcia Littley and Javier Arias have been joined by fellow Juilliard graduates, violinist Misha Vitenson and violist Michael Klotz. Their busy performance schedule has taken the group to major musical centers and smaller cities across the United States. They also have performed concerts in Japan, Canada, Germany, France, Switzerland, Korea, Mexico, and Romania. The Amernet’s New York debut was at Merkin Hall in 1994, with a return engagement in 1995. From September of 2000 until May 2004 the Amernet String Quartet was Corbett String Quartet in Residence at Northern Kentucky University, where they headed the Patricia A. Corbett String Program. Previous to that, the group held a residency at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music where they taught chamber music for four years. The Amernet String Quartet has received grants from the Corbett Foundation, the Greater Cincinnati Foundation, the LaSalle Foundation, the Fine Arts Fund, the Cincinnati Chamber Music Society and the Amernet Society for school outreach projects, commissions of new chamber music works and for their unique concert and conversation series. The group was the recipient of a Chamber Music Rural Residency Award in 1995. During that year they divided their time among the communities of Johnstown, Somerset and Indiana, Pennsylvania.
The Amernet Quartet has conducted workshops and master classes in Buffalo NY, Memphis TN, Erie PA, Los Angeles CA, Logan UT and other cities. They were founders of The Norse Festival, a summer chamber music workshop at Northern Kentucky University providing an opportunity for young musicians from the region to work intensively in chamber groups, under their guidance. Currently they host an annual summer Chamber Music Camp in Miami called Animato. The group has recorded the Concerto for Clarinet, Oboe, String Quartet and Bass by John Harbison with Sara Lambert Bloom and Charles Neidich as soloists, “The Butterflies began to Sing” a work for String Quartet, Bass, MIDI keyboard and computer, by Morton Subotnick, a complete CD of quartets by American composer Stephen Dankner, as well as a recording of the Debussy String Quartet and the Chausson Concerto for Piano, Violin and String Quartet. The Coffee House Gypsies Pre-AIDS Walk Miami Concert at Tobacco Road 4/14/10

Pre-AIDS Walk Miami Concert; Rocking for AIDS Awareness, Prevention, Testing, and Treatment

On Wednesday, April 14, 2010 @ 9:00 PM the legendary TOBACCO ROAD will join forces once again with South Florida’s pop-rock band THE COFFEE HOUSE GYPSIES in collaboration with CARE RESOURCE for a concert event to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS. Taking place just three days before the 22nd AIDS Walk Miami, the concert will kick off the 2010 AIDS Walk Week. The event will feature live art with silent auction. All proceeds from artwork auctioned at the show will go to Care Resource. Admission for this show will be $10 at the door or $7 for advanced tickets and a portion of all door and ticket sales will go to Care Resource. You must be 21 or older to attend. Tobacco Road is located at 626 South Miami Avenue, 33130.

The changing face of AIDS in this nation reflects a devastating number of people in South Florida. Fort Lauderdale ranks third and Miami ranks fourth in AIDS rates among metropolitan areas in the nation. As of 2008, more than 50,000 people were living with HIV/AIDS throughout Miami-Dade and Broward Counties combined. A high percentage of HIV positive residents in South Florida are not in care and hundreds more do not even know their HIV status. The state of the epidemic continues to grow and change; therefore, the support of the community for HIV education, prevention, research and treatment is crucial.

In an effort to increase awareness, participation, and support for HIV prevention, care, and treatment, The Coffee House Gypsies band will hold a concert at Tobacco Road for the general public and Care Resource of Miami. The event will feature live art and cameo appearances by other local bands such as: phoenix/NEBULIN, For The Record, Pretty On Paper, Tony Cruz of The Bailouts and Zaida from Ego Band.

The 22nd Annual AIDS Walk Miami TM fundraiser is scheduled for Saturday, April 17th, 2010. Sign up for the Walk today and help fight HIV/AIDS in your community. The International One-day fundraiser Dining Out For Life is also back for a 5th exciting year on Thursday, April 29, 2010. Dine Out and Help to Save Lives.

ABOUT THE COFFEE HOUSE GYPSIES
They have been active in Miami’s music scene since 1997 and they have performed in New York City and all over South Florida. They were the only band to-date to win nine Status QuO South Florida Live Music Awards with nominations in ten categories. In 2009 South Florida’s Sun Sentinnel called the Miami band “a band of nomads who keep moving to different musical genres.” The Miami Herald said, “CHG’s sound is reminiscent of The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac and The Mamas and the Papas,” referring to them as “a quintessential jam band.” Miami New Times said “Fans of Fleetwood Mac, the Mamas and the Papas, and 97.3 FM should dig this group without question. Their harmonies, both vocal and instrumental, are soothing and give a generally upbeat feel”

Erykah Badu Concert performs live at the WaterFront Theatre AmericanAirlines Arena 4/8/10

The multi-platinum selling, Grammy winning singer-songwriter-producer-actress will perform live at the WaterFront Theatre inside the AmericanAirlines Arena to celebrate the release of her anticipated fifth studio album, NEW AMERYKAH PART: RETURN OF THE ANKH, to be released March 30th.
This is currently her ONLY scheduled performance and it’s in South Florida.
Tickets are now available online at TicketMaster.com and selling fast.

In-depth Biography
She grew up listening to ’70s soul and ’80s hip-hop, but Erykah Badu drew more comparisons to Billie Holiday upon her breakout in 1997, after the release of her first album, Baduizm. The grooves and production on the album are bass-heavy R&B, but Badu’s langurous, occasionally tortured vocals and delicate phrasing immediately removed her from the legion of cookie-cutter female R&B singers. A singer/songwriter responsible for all but one of the songs on Baduizm, she found a number 12 hit with her first single “On & On,” which pushed the album to number two on the charts.

Born Erica Wright in Dallas in 1971, Badu attended a school of the arts and was working as a teacher and part-time singer in her hometown when she opened for D’Angelo at a 1994 show. D’Angelo’s manager, Kedar Massenburg, was impressed with the performance and hooked her up with the singer to record a cover of the Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell duet “Precious Love.” He also signed Badu to his recently formed Kedar Entertainment label, and served as producer for Baduizm, which also starred bassist Ron Carter and members of hip-hop avatars the Roots on several tracks. The first single, “On & On,” became a number one R&B hit in early 1997, and Baduizm followed it to the top of the R&B album charts by March. Opening for R&B acts as well as rap’s Wu-Tang Clan, Erykah Badu stopped just short of number one on the pop album charts in April. Her Live album followed later in the year. In 2000 she returned with her highly anticipated second studio album, Mama’s Gun, which was co-produced by Badu, James Poyser, Bilal and Jay Dee and contained the hit single “Bag Lady.” Worldwide Underground, a loose affair billed as an EP despite being longer than many full-lengths, was released in 2003. Her next step, 2008’s New AmErykah, Pt. 1: 4th World War, initiated a series of planned releases across the following year. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide

About Pnuma Trio
Dynamic, scene-setting electronica youngsters, Pnuma Trio, have been known for their forward-thinking compositions and moving, powerful improvisations since their explosion onto the scene in 2004. Ben Hazelgrove, Alex Botwin, and Lane Shaw released their debut studio album, Character, on STS9’s label, 1320 Records. A refined, glitch-informed electro/hip-hop feel with all the dynamic energy of their DJ-killing live show, the new album represents a significantly evolved version of Pnuma’s futuristic sound: tighter, more focused, and higher resolution. The long synth solos have been replaced by careful layering. Instead of building each song to it’s climax, the band percolates on hot remixed urban ideas, letting the production create the spacious atmosphere. Visit www.pnumatrio.com for more info!

About Big Gigantic
Boulder’s Big Gigantic has been killing the live-electronic music scene as of late. Moving from small club gigs around Colorado to playing shows with STS9, Bassnectar, and Pnuma Trio while hitting summer festivals throughout the country. The two-man sound-machine of Big Gigantic is the latest project from producer/saxophonist Dominic Lalli (Motet) and drummer Jeremy Salken. Showcasing an array of gripping composition by combining DJ elements with a live band setup. Mixing thoughtful melodic ideas with pulsating dance tunes, Big Gigantic flavors the electronic music scene with powerful sax solos and soulful synth lines on top of super hot beats. Their debut album, Fire It Up, combines hard-hitting dance beats and booming bass lines with lush electronic landscapes and unforgettable melodies. Rachel Currea
grand winner of our
2009 *Talent Quest Miami competition
Advance Tickets available here.
Advance tickets online $15. At the door: $20.
ABOUT RACHEL
Rachel Currea began composing consistently when she was 19 years old as a way to relax from the rigors of classical music training and the demands of college and work. Shortly after she composed her first few pieces, she suffered a serious auto accident with head trauma. For the next ten years Rachel found it nearly impossible to compose, but continued to perform and teach piano. Her breakthrough in composing again came with learning the art of meditation. Her CD of piano solos, “Inner Sound” is a tribute to this creative and personal breakthrough.

Rachel waited until the last minute to enter the 2009 Talent Quest Miami competition and, as writer Lynette Zilio commented in the Miami Herald, “Last was certainly not least at 2009 Talent Quest Miami* finale. Pianist and composer Rachel Currea, the last of 12 performers, took home $500 and the opportunity to showcase her work after blowing the judges away with her original piece, ‘Hear Me Now’.” ~Lynette Zilio – The Miami Herald (Jul 28, 2009)

New Miami On Stage series begins with a free concert by Anabel and Ke o Ke 3/6/10

New “Miami On Stage” Series
Presenting South Florida Performing Artists
Begins Saturday March 6 With A Free Concert By Anabel & Ke o Ke

A community’s culture is created by those who live and work there. Miami already has a homegrown, exciting contemporary performing arts scene, but it can only continue to grow if area artists have high-quality, public showcases that expose their talent to South Florida audiences. The new Miami On Stage project will do just that by presenting locally produced work on a regular basis. It will feature some of the best of Miami’s performing artists in a series that takes place in Miami Beach’s North Beach neighborhood, beginning March 6 with a free “tropical fusion” concert by Anabel & Ke o Ke at the North Beach Open Space Park. Miami On Stage is produced by FUNDarte, one of the South Florida’s most adventurous and successful presenters of alternative culture, particularly with a Latin flavor.

Singer Anabel is based in South Florida but was born in Cuba to a musical family. She has been a member of such groups as Salsabrava and Retrozon, as well as pursuing her solo career as an interpreter of diverse musical styles, including salsa, bolero and son. Since 2005 Anabel has been based in South Florida and led her own group, Ke o Ke, showcasing her unique fusion style. She has shared the stage with musicians such as Willy Chirino. Albita Rodriguez and Cachao. This first Miami On Stage concert, just steps away from the ocean in a beautiful outdoor setting, begins at 4:00 pm as the sun begins to go down, and promises to be a hip-shaking musical journey through contemporary Latin musical genres. It is co-presented with the City of Miami Beach as part of its Arts in the Parks program.

“We are so pleased to be able to launch our new, annual Miami On Stage series this year, and provide a professional venue for contemporary, regional performing artists who the general public here is often not exposed to, “ says Ever Chavez, Executive Director of FUNDarte. More information about the upcoming Anabel concert, which is free and does not require a ticket, and the entire series, can be found online at www.fundarte.us or by contacting FUNDarte at info@fundarte.us or (305) 316-6165. North Beach Open Space Park’s entrance is at 81 Street and Collins Avenue.

Miami On Stage will continue on the first Saturday of each month, through June of this year. April 3rd will feature the great timba band Tiempo Libre at North Beach’s Byron Carlyle Theater with the Miami premiere performance of their Bach in Havana, a salsa meets Classical music mash-up based on the CD of the same name, which this year was nominated for a Grammy Award. Tickets on Sale Now!

The Heavy Pets (THP) are an American band whose contagious vibe blends rhythm and blues, jazz-funk and reggae fusion with homegrown rock and roll. Called “a living, breathing, force of nature” by Dan Sweeny of Relix magazine, THP are known for powerhouse performances spiked with hot electric licks and multi-climactic instrumental solos, as well as for their masterful acoustic acumen. In 2007, the group became an instant Sirius radio sensation with the release of their acclaimed double-disc debut album, Whale, driven by hit tracks “Operation of Flight” and “Sleep.” Major festival darlings, THP have taken the stage at Bonnaroo, moe.down, Langerado, New Orleans Backbeat Jazzfest, and their namesake PetZoo, a two-day, multi-band festival that draws hordes of Pets devotees to Bucks County, PA, to feast on the headliners’ live alchemy. www.theheavypets.com.

Rachel Currea Grand Winner of Talent Quest Miami A Piano Recital Showcase 2/27/10

Join Us on Saturday, February 27th at 8pm
when Arts at St Johns presents
pianist/composer, Rachel Currea’s
“A Piano Recital Showcase”
featuring original compositions and classical favorites
at Arts at St Johns, 4760 Pine Tree Drive, Miami Beach, FL 33140

Excerpt from Examiner article by George Leposky 2009:
“The audience at Rachel Thomas Currea’s recent piano concert heard a truly remarkable program, comprising her own compositions interspersed with classics spanning the centuries from Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757) through Frederik Chopin (1810-1849) to George Gershwin (1898-1937).

Although Currea describes herself as a New Age pianist and composer, her own music springs from classical roots and draws upon her formal education, which includes bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music from the University of Miami. Yet, there’s nothing formalistic about her music.

In remarks at the beginning of the concert, Currea explained that she composes music to describe her feelings andexperiences, justassomepeoplewritediariesinwords.” (read full article here)

Concert Series at Bayfront Park with South Florida Jazz Orchestra and Nicole Henry 2/12/10

It’s all about romance and the Big Band sound when the South Florida Jazz Orchestra brings their swinging ways to the Tina Hills Pavilion for a free concert on Friday, February 12, 2010 at 5:30pm. The orchestra is an amazingly tight ensemble with bouncy swing and big jazz sounds – a musical treat for the ear and a dance treat for the “swinger” in you. Miami’s own Nicole Henry joins the orchestra for a little romance from the Great American Song book. Her sound described as ‘sensual and romantic,’ is a perfect accompaniment for a glass of wine under the stars. Presented by MIAMI DDA.
