A Portrait of Barbara Hulanicki

(Directed by Louis Price/UK/2009/55min)
Produced by Thomas Walters & James Collie
Barbara Hulanicki will always be remembered for BIBA, the shop that changed the face of UK fashion in the 1960s and 70s. BIBA would leave an indelible mark on the minds and wardrobes of the customers who ventured through its doors. Following its closure in 1975, many have attempted to reproduce the magic. All have missed the key ingredient: the involvement of its creator, Barbara Hulanicki. The legendary career of Barbara entered a new phase in 1987, when she completely reinventing herself as an interior designer in Miami. Hulanicki was at the forefront of the regeneration of Miami Beach, collaborating with Island Records founder Chris Blackwell. Barbara Hulanicki is now respected across the world as a major figure in design.
Barbara Hulanicki and producer James Collie will be present for introduction and Q&A after the film on Friday, with a reception to follow. Come celebrate with us!

Spit-Polishing a Starless Sky/Outer Space at Charest-Weinberg Gallery 9/12/09

center_image
Spit-Polishing a Starless Sky/Outer Space
Bhakti Baxter, Nicolas Lobo, Gean Moreno, Daniel Newman, Ernesto Oroza, and Gavin Perry will be featured in the exhibition, Spit-Polishing a Starless Sky/Outer Space, at Charest-Weinberg Gallery, from September 12 through October 5, 2009. The opening reception will be on September 12 from 6pm to 9 pm at 250 NW 23rd Street, Space 408, Miami, FL 33127.
The exhibition is comprised of two different exhibitions that have been superimposed without any attempt to make them cohere. Two sets of information have simply been brought together, and the resulting form of the exhibition will be determined by the very dynamics of their interaction.
The first exhibition, Spit-Polishing a Starless Sky, is made up of black or nearly-black paintings by Bhakti Baxter, Daniel Newman and Gavin Perry. In the work of all these painters, the black monochrome is entwined with references that belong in cultural spheres that exist far away from formalist concerns. In Baxter’s case, the black paintings double as images of macroscopic phenomena and have a scientific flavor. In Perry’s work, the black monochrome is literally the high-end side of paintings that also trade in lowbrow referents and objects, like cheap rugs and souped up cars. With Newman, the black glaze is all process. He has covered over 200 found paintings with black, turning a gesture characteristic of iconophobia into a delirious flow of production. In a sense, in the work of all these painters, two sets of information are already blended. Each of their works becomes a stand-in for the overall structure of a double-exhibition with incompatible or competing halves.
The second exhibition, Outer Space, titled after a 1999 short film by Peter Tscherkassky, will be made up of sculptural proposals by Nicolas Lobo and Giancarlo Sardone, and Ernesto Oroza and Gean Moreno. Each of these collaborative projects begins with elements provided by the technologies, conventions and infrastructure that form the invisible materiality of our social space. Working through all the engineering problems and ontological recoding that rendering a virtual artifact in actual space brings, Lobo has collaborated with terrazzo mason Sardone to produce a real-life double of a standard bench that can be found ready-made in the design program SketchUp. As the bench took shape, its proportions began to feel slightly off due to some distortion caused by the SketchUp rendering engine. What looked like a perfectly bland bench on screen takes on an uncanny air in our physical space. Oroza and Moreno will use the tabloid, of the sort found throughout the city’s neighborhoods, to create both a “catalog” and an ornamental wallpaper pattern from forms determined by the exhibition itself that will, in turn, activate the supposed neutral walls of the space.
All of the artists in the exhibition are part of Miami’s burgeoning scene. They have all exhibited their work internationally and are represented in the collections of major museums. This will be the first time their work is shown at Charest-Weinberg Gallery, whose reputation continues to grow as Miami’s premier venue for emerging art.

Horacio Sapere Vickie Pierre Carlos de Villasante at Diana Lowenstein Fine Arts 9/12/09

Alternate Combinations You Poor, Sweet, Innocent Thing Short Form

HORACIO SAPERE
Alternate Combinations builds on the implication of a long-standing body of work connecting the many threads of this thoughtful painter’s work. While predominantly known as a painter, Sapere has always brought a conceptual approach to the media. He has further worked beyond the confines of the media with sculpture and installation, specifically in the Poet’s Room series, which is an ongoing and somehow never completed project in constant evolution. His engagement in ideas established the field of painting and more spatial modes of representation within the parameters of modes of thought and representation. So for Sapere the act of painting, like the act of writing, is situated within the field of thought and should be understood as a form of thought. In his own terms, painting, like sculpture, can be a form of ‘visual poetry’. – William Jeffett
Horacio Sapere was born Buenos Aires, Argentina. His work has been exhibited widely in Europe, as well as Canada, China, Cuba, Egypt, Korea, Uruguay, Venezuela, the United States. He currently lives and works in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.

VICKIE PIERRE
“Within my paintings and drawings, rubber stamp imprints of fictional female icons are converted into a world where the line between abstraction and representation is blurred. The works are primarily comprised of the dresses of the “three graces” of the fairy tale animation world: Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella. The repetitive applications and manipulation of the stamped images into clusters and groupings, along with occasional handwritten text, have become the basis of a connective network that alludes to identity, order, sensuality and feminine psychology. The repeated application of these icons also mirrors their mass-produced presence in popular culture. I am drawn to these characters; their underlying themes and their symbolic significance. In appropriating these images and in turn reconfiguring them, I am attempting to create a new meaning (or story). They are now faceless totems, deities, icons of a different caliber that are self-assured, indulgent and independent. These deconstructed and distorted shapes become otherworldly characters with sensual and precious personalities. They are self-contained and self-generating, recalling the abstractions and distortions of flora as well as the human body.”
Vickie Pierre is a Haitian-American artist born in Brooklyn, New York. She received a BFA in Studio Arts from the School of Visual Arts. Pierre relocated to Miami in 1999 and has participated in numerous exhibitions. In 2004, she participated in Transitory Patterns: Florida Women Artists at The National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. Her paintings and works on paper have been exhibited at Art Basel Miami Beach, among other fairs. Collections include the Progressive Art Collection, Cleveland, OH; Millennium Partners Collection of Contemporary Art, The Four Seasons, Miami, FL; and ALFA – Wasserman Collection, Bologna, Italy.

CARLOS DE VILLASANTE – Project Room
“In theatre, Short Form follows an improvisational spontaneous format. My paintings likewise follow intuitive suggestions, accidents and interventions. I use automatic mark-making to oppose precise graphic representation in my portraits. I then rely on my sensibilities to suggest which next step to take, much like in theatre when the audience’s suggestions guide the performance.”
Carlos de Villasante was born in Mexico City and lives in Sonoma, California, where he is on the painting faculty at Sonoma State University. He received a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from the Memphis College of Art. He exhibits his work both in the United States and abroad.
Carlos has taught numerous courses in studio art as well as liberal arts both in MFA and BFA degree programs. He began as a teaching assistant at the Rhode Island School of Design in 1991 and has also taught the Memphis College of Art; the University of Mississippi, Oxford, and New World School of the Arts in Miami. He lived in Miami for several years and was part of the full-time faculty at Miami international University of Art and Design. Carlos is included in the recent book, Miami Contemporary Artists, by Paul Clemence and Julie Davidow.

ARTOCONECTO, THE DYNAMIC MIAMI ARTS NON-PROFIT, PRESENTS:
KIDSART: The Art Show! With a Special LIVE performance by Oscar Fuentes and Friends at 7:30PM!
The kids worked hard creating their projects for five weeks and now they are ready for their Opening Night! Come see their work at Wynwood’s Second Saturday Art Walk!
On Saturday mornings this summer, KIDSART brought a group of kids right into the studios of five notable Miami artists. Each week, a different artist led the kids in a workshop they created based on community-oriented themes, like sustainable art, recycling, or diversity. The kids learned the importance of having art and creativity in their lives, and got to know artists, and each other, in a very personal way. Working on arts projects together, and then sitting down to lunch to discuss their work, brought them a new, and bold perspective on art in Miami, and in their lives. Come see their collaborative creations, and get a glimpse of the artists’ work as well!
Where: Damien B. Contemporary Art Center

Review – People’s BBQ Restaurant

{I know we rarely do reviews, but we just tried out a place that is really good that many people might miss, so we wanted to give them a shout out. The below is entirely the opinion of Soul Of Miami. And if this place doesn’t have soul, no place does!}

I know many of us have talked about this place. So, we finally got in the car and went to People’s BBQ. That’s the one just off I-95, on NW 8th St and 3rd Ave. It took us a while to make it by because it is not really convenient to any of the areas of town we normally hang out in, so we had to make a special trip.

Well, it is very good! Very down home style BBQ, with Souse and everything like that. Between the three of us, we got the ribs, the baked ham, and the sliced beef. Sides were mac & cheese, green beans, candied yams, mashed potatoes, and ocra. All of them were really good, but the candied yams were insane.

It is a funny little place, looks kind of like an old converted Dairy Queen, very plain on the inside. Obviously old, but clean and well-kept. There were not many people doing dine in when we were there, but the take out counter was constantly busy.

Oh, we also tried the Souse. Now, if you can get over your cultural bias, it was very good, very flavorful.

The BBQ sauce they use is different than others I have tasted. I think it might be a bit mustardy, or something. Very good, in any case.

The prices are cheap, you can get a full dinner with sides for $9-$11.

Definitely a place I would put on my list of “six places to take Anthony Boudain in Miami.” Highly recommended.

Massachusetts born rapper Termanology quickly rose from underground obscurity to working with some of hiphop’s elite producers, particularly DJ Premier. Growing up in the streets of the predominantly Latino city of Lawrence, MA, informed the halfwhite, halfPuerto Rican MC’s lyrics as he graduated from silly freestyles at age nine to fullfledged verses at the age of 15. He constantly had to travel back and forth from Boston to New York in order to pursue various opportunities, releasing his first material on vinyl in 2001. Closely tied to fellow Lawrence native and mixtape DJ Statik Selektah, Termanology earned the respect of Boston’s hiphop scene with several 12″ releases as well as his Hood Politics mixtapes, which gradually came to feature more highly regarded lyricists like Royce da 5’9″ and Guru. After releasing the collaborative LP Out the Gate with producer DC the Midi Alien at the onset of 2006, he caught his big break when distinguished producer DJ Premier, whom he met three years earlier, finally gave him one of his signature, scratchladen beats. The result, “Watch How It Go Down,” became an underground hit. Declaring himself the resurrection of his biggest idol, Big Pun, in the opening verse, the conscious hood anthem garnered the earnest MC tons of praise, landing him on the pages of many hiphop publications, notably The Source’s “Unsigned Hype” and XXL’s “Show and Prove” columns. The DJ Premier produced hit later appeared on the Hood Politics, Vol. 4 mixtape in November 2006.

David Castillo Gallery is pleased to present You might sleep, but you will never dream, Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova’s second solo exhibition at the gallery.

The artist uses a vocabulary of domestic objects and suburban architectural elements as a visual language, addressing our social, cultural and emotional existence. He uses material appropriations first introduced in post-minimal and conceptual art. Rodriguez-Casanova is presenting a series of objects that use a room as the point of departure for his concepts. All the objects are elements of a room which have been detached from their original context.

As the title of Damien Hirst’s work suggests, The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living, Rodriguez-Casanova is interested in understanding the loss of someone, including one’s self (and the “impossibility” of such). In the work An Open Door, 2008 commissioned for the Dennis and Debra Scholl Collection, the artist built an entirely new wall with a blackout doorway created by a black sheet of plexi. The opening becomes a metaphor for what lies beyond our existence. This same element exits in A Folded Bed, 2009 in which a portable folding bed is intersected by a large sheet of the same black plexi. The black plane once more is a metaphor for a void. In A Bedroom Floor, 2009 the artist has recreated the exact tile grid of his adolescent bedroom floor. A nod to Carl Andre, the work uses its own detachment and “negative space” properties to focus on the floor and its plight in its original context.

Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova lives and works in Miami, and has exhibited nationally and internationally. His work has been featured in publications such as Art in America, ARTnews, and Sculpture Magazine. The artist has recently exhibited at Socrates Sculpture Park and the Sculpture Center in New York, among many other venues.

In the project room, the gallery is proud to present Amir H. Fallah’s Flowers and Terrorists.

The stark juxtaposition of flowery still lifes and political statements confront the severe spectrum the world lives in. Fallah uses familiar colors and collage elements to blur the line between beauty and violence. Fallah’s still lifes “his mother wishes he would paint” are sullied through his chaotic use of explosive color, while the terror-themed paintings are calmed by the easier transitions of subtle colors.

In the David Castillo Annex, Amir H. Fallah constructs a single tower of objects from found materials in Miami. In this installation as in his paintings, the artist combines the subjects of still lifes and political statements, re-enforcing the dialogue between them. The site-specific installation is a commentary on how beauty and terror are ultimately conjoined in life.

The Los Angeles-based artist has exhibited nationally and internationally. He is also the publisher of the contemporary arts magazine Beautiful/Decay. Fallah received his B.F.A. from The Maryland Institute College of Art and his M.F.A from UCLA in 2005. He was included in the 2009 Sharjah Biennial.

About: Educate Tomorrow, Corp. is an international, nonprofit, certified 501(c)(3) organization. All over the world, poverty denies children, as well as adults, the promises of a better tomorrow. Forgotten by society and social welfare programs, children born into poverty are trapped in a cruel and often violent cycle that frequently continues for generations. Lacking the inspiration, confidence, knowledge, and means to change, entire families are lost to the cycle of hopelessness.

Educate Tomorrow believes that the best way to end the cycle of poverty is through education. Our mission is to make education an attainable goal for the most disadvantaged in our world, so that all may be afforded the possibilities that can be achieved through learning. We strive to reach out to these individuals and provide them inspiration, guidance, and support and lead them on the path of life-long learning.

Educate Tomorrow’s primary mission in the US is to provide one-on-one educational mentors to foster care children that are turning 18 and “aging out” of the system. Since its founding in 2003, Educate Tomorrow has successfully implemented its mentoring programs, education programs and life skills camps across the nation. Additionally, it has reached internationally by continuing to support the work of it’s founders who established one of the first local language primary schools, adult literacy programs and boarding schools in the remote and impoverished village of Kabey Fo in Niger, West Africa.

Icons of our times
– feminine figures as a metaphor for human dignity

Ekaterina Moré’s paintings are not illustrations or portraits in the conventional sense but much rather symbolic images which evolved from deep emotions. With her impressive depictions, the artist shows her great respect for the feminine force. It was not by chance that deities in the dim and distant past were feminine. And in our times as well, the woman embodies many characteristics which the artist harmonizes in her works in an ideal manner. The dawning century will be feminine – or it will not come to be. The isolated male side, the cold striving for power and the brutal force often connected with the patriarchy have reached their limits. A new age begins.
Positive accents in this direction are set by the artist’s figure of the woman – erotic, sensitive, yet powerful and self-assured.

In 1976, Ekaterina Moré was born in then Leningrad which, in the early 1990s, was given back its original name of Saint Petersburg. Today, the artist is living in Germany’s Rhineland. Early on, her parents specially fostered her artistic talent since her family had always held the fine arts in high esteem. Her great-grandfather had already studied at the Baron Stieglitz Academy for Design which was closed during the Russian Revolution. Her grandfather attended the Art Academy in St. Petersburg. Her father worked as a sculptor to counterbalance his military career as an officer; and together with her mother who was an independent artist, he designed stage settings for the local theater.

Such early contacts with the fine arts aroused Ekaterina Moré’s interest in painting and drawing in a very particular way. Already at a youthful age, she showed professional promises. And so, in her early works she developed an impressive synthesis between traditional Russian painting and avant-garde art. Although she never received any academic fine arts education, she soon found her very individual expression as a painter and successfully became accepted as an artist in the West.

Among Russian artists, she was no exception with her great interest in western art. In former times, looking to the West used to be characteristic for Russian avant-garde artists and has also been amply documented in the abundant art collections – especially in Ekaterina Moré’s hometown of Saint Petersburg. She had become familiar with western European painting during her numerous visits to the Hermitage. Her first artistic examples were Postimpressionist painters such as Gauguin, Cézanne and van Gogh. Later also Tamara de Lempicka, the famous Polish painter who had lived in Paris for many years; from there she had gone to the U.S.A. and still later moved to Mexico. Tamara de Lempicka and Ekaterina Moré have a few things in common. To be mentioned in this respect is the artistic development of the two women as it evolved in showing more and more one central figure – self-assured, yet erotically feminine. Also to be mentioned as a common ground: Until the October Revolution, Tamara de Lempicka had spent some happy years in Saint Petersburg, Ekaterina Moré’s native town.

Due to her parents’ professions, Ekaterina also came to know the vastness of the Russian landscape and the differences of its regions. She grew up at the Russian-American outer border – on the Kamchatka peninsula and the Sea of Japan. Her visual experiences there broadened her artistic horizon in a very special way. In her memoirs about that time, Ekaterina Moré provides a very impressive description of the Kamchatka peninsula. The world of the resident Chuktchi people and the Koryaks with their colorful costumes, shamanistic traditions and their special ritual dances has left lasting impressions.
This deserted region in the extreme north-eastern part of Russia certainly is the complete opposite of the world of salons and tête à têtes which Ekaterina Moré paints today. But perhaps her sensitivity to special light and color effects stems from the experience with colors in that region: It remains dark all winter, and in the extremely short summer time, the bursting force of colors has a very intensive effect on the senses.
Just as this intensive Nordic light sharpened Ekaterina’s perceptions, the desolation and the vastness of this sub-arctic region possibly made her deal intensively with her inner images. She discovered art as the universal language of humanity which connects the different cultures and gives people the opportunity to meet their inner child.

In the far east of Russia, she had thus developed good basic prerequisites so that, in Germany, she could further continue her artistic ways.
After her move to Germany, she began to paint large-format pictures which soon attracted the interest of collectors and gallery owners. Already in 2001, the artist had her first successful exhibitions. Soon thereafter, her paintings were on display not only in Düsseldorf and in other German cities, but also in Moscow, Oslo and in Paris. Product designers saw the potential and the impressive power of her figures; and they transferred Ekaterina’s themes to high-quality luxury products – for example, company Rosenthal used them on its valuable porcelain tableware. Interior designers also took note of the artist’s attractive and exciting themes. They used them to good effect at very special places. Where would such salon scenes be more fitting than in actual salons, such as the bar of the Maritim Hotel in Berlin?

Ekaterina Moré’s feminine figures have an inner beauty – this is what makes them soulful and alive. They radiate self-assurance and integrity – characteristics pleasantly touching the viewer.
The attributes of the persons bring the type of depiction close to pictures of saints. As with Russian icons, a sort of symbolic picture is created which is here embedded not in a religious but rather in a worldly and mundane context.
It is particularly important for Ekaterina Moré to make a personality’s complexity come together in an organic unity. This unity consists of the interplay of apparently contradictory impressions. It not only concerns cold rationality and warmhearted emotions. In her depiction of the complexity of human life, Ekaterina Moré goes far beyond this and exposes nuances deep down. Ekaterina’s female figures give the impression of being proud and self-assured, yet at the same time compassionate and motherly. They appear open and unapproachable at the same time; sisterly intimate, yet oddly strange and unrelated. The artist develops from all these facets the ideal image of the woman which we can meet on the same level as masterly icons which are also ideal images uniting antagonistic personality traits – seemingly good ones as well as allegedly bad ones.

The technique of painting such pictures cannot be classically realistic. The artist much rather forms an artificial world entirely different from the real world –- a theatrum mundi in a pure form for the viewer’s enjoyment. She keeps her figures in a kind of limbo between elegant exterior appearance and introverted nature. This tension between the inner and outer world in her paintings provides a very distinctive atmosphere and nimbus. The scenes’ vague and indeterminate complexity additionally provides a particularly suspenseful feeling. Especially the artist’s double portraits are masterly in this respect.
The protagonists are here on the same level: Similar elegance and personal aura – and their particular nuances being expressed with utmost sensitivity. It shows the artist’s broad range of the palette to expose even the smallest nuances of a personality. A slight, almost invisible intimate touch underlines the closeness between the two protagonists. The viewer’s fantasy thus gets going by an irresistible force. Who would not yearn for such unfathomable intimacy and closeness?

Because Ekaterina Moré pays her respect to the female figures in her works with an inherently harmonizing complexity, they are provided with an exceptional personal strength which at times causes a feeling of unease in the viewer. They seem far removed from everyday life and on the world just for themselves. They are thus literally autonomous and combine knowledge and dignity. The costume, the jewelry and even the surroundings of the pertinent central figure – these attributes of femininity – absorb the aura of the central figures and provide the color supplement to the shapely feminine bodies which are the center of the artistic composition.
Not unlike Renaissance paintings, Ekaterina Moré is not only concerned with the effect of the colors’ luminescence but also with the materiality which she brings to great effect with a brilliance of colors. With her excellent skills of the craft, the artist presents us the meeting of minds with her artistic examples which at first seems rather remote due to the risqué nature of her compositions. Are her depictions the pictures of saints of our times – very modern, mundane successors of classical iconic figures?
Similar to the Renaissance paintings which are also charged with subtle eroticism, Ekaterina Moré’s works certainly also allow such assumptions.
Art Historian Dr. Helmut Orpel

“I want to depict fascinating women and in so doing provide substance to a yearning for beauty and harmony. My works want to open a way to the viewer’s inner self so that people will treat themselves with love and warmth.”

CGC’s The Barnyard is a very unique place—a safe-haven for children and a trusted resource for adults and social service providers. Over 400 children and families benefit from the Barnyard’s After School and Summer Programs and their workshops and services for the adult community. All programs are free of charge and costs are kept to a minimum to ensure funds directly benefit families. I have personally spent time at The Barnyard, and it is inspiring to see how many children and families this place and programming helps.

Recently, The Barnyard has also become a meeting place for families displaced by the new construction and gradual gentrification of the West Grove. There has never been a greater need for the After-School and Summer Programs as students from as far as Carol City attend as a means to stay close to their neighborhood and extended family. As soon as The Barnyard doors open, the children come pouring in.

Citizen Kane at Electric Pickle 9/4/09

kane_cr
* Friday night: Special Edition.. Magic City Disco w/ Dj Citizen Kane (Adult Section/ NYC)

Dennis“Citizen”Kane has been a seminal and iconic figure in contemporary dance music culture since his emergence in the mid 90’s NYC downtown scene. A former disco and old school buyer for the infamous A1 records, Kane has been digging and collecting since his early teens in Philadelphia.
In 1999 Kane released Selects 001 (with Chairman Mao) a mix of rare Northern Soul, boogie, and disco treats. It gained significant critical praise from Journals like Urb, The Wire, and LA Weekly, and it was nominated to numerous top 10 lists, including The Village Voice’s. A follow up mix, The Greatest Part, released in 2001, went further into the realms of disco and garnered similar critical praise. In 06 Kane released Adult Section, a solo mix with numerous re-edits, that in its diversity reflects the dynamic range of his live sets. It was named one of the years 10 best by Filter magazine, and cited as an essential disco “must have” by Ocean Drive magazine.
Kane’s label Disques Sinthomme had its initial release in the spring of 2007. Featuring tracks by Kane and Lodge co-resident Darshan Jesrani, the 12” charted throughout Europe and Japan, and has appeared on several mix compilations. The labels second release featured original work by Silver and Professor Genius, as well as remixes from Kane and Nick Chacona. Silver’s track has been licensed for a forthcoming cosmic compilation helmed by Ibiza luminary Phil Mison. The record was a huge underground hit and a staple for the likes of Aeroplane, DJ Harvey and Prins Thomas. DS003 featured tracks by The Beat Broker and Lars Behrenroth with remixes from Kane and Smith & Mudd. The EP continued Disques Sinthomme’s expansion of the form of contemporary “new disco” incorporating balearic and orchestral aspects to strong rhythm tracks. Kane’s remix of Cactus Cooler was in heavy rotation especially in Europe, and was listed on several “best of” lists. In Sept. Disques Sinthomme will release an original work of Kane’s, with vocals from Liquid Liquids Sal Principato as well as a remix of Fist of Facts “First Strike”
Kane also runs the Ghost Town re-edit label. Its second release Strawberry/Love has become an indie radio favorite, featured on mix shows by (amongst others), Richard Sen and Alex Pewin. Its third release featuring arrangements by The Beat Broker is forthcoming. Kane also has tracks out on Moton (the infamous “Spanish Home”) and Homestyle labels.
Kane is co-resident at Cielo in NYC (with Metro Area’s Darshan Jesrani) their Adult Section party is in its second year. The two also throw the reknown Strobe Lodge loft parties. (www.strobelodge.com) Kane’s Deep End party ran for 81/2 years at APT in NYC and was seminal in the development of the disco revival, guests included Phil Mison, Force of Nature, DJ Harvey, Nicky Siano, Quiet Village and Danny Krivit.
Recently recovered from a near fatal bike accident, Kane resides in NYC, with his wife Karen and son Roan Mingus. When not touring, digging or working in the studio, he is either DJ’ing, painting, or making risotto. He dreams of the old New York daily.

Also in September, CCE will present the photo exhibition Entre Calles by Spanish photographer Silvia Martínez “Kuti” as part of the “Espacio Abierto” initiative. Her work is eye catching in what it brings you closer to unknown and familiar realities, always characters and surroundings of rural and urban Cuba, beyond the typical images of Cuba and digging into an inaccessible reality for the observer. She evolves from paper as a printing material, towards canvas and aluminum. Her work has caught the attention of multiple private collections and art foundations both in Cuba and abroad. At present, she lives in Miami.
The Cultural Center of Spain (CCE Miami) is a non-profit organization dedicated to education, arts and culture that aims to promote and foster cultural cooperation, local creation and fostering dialogue of space and exchange by means of a yearly continuous programming.

Pecha Kucha, Japanese for “chit chat” is a high-energy showcase of ideas that started 2003 in Japan. The concept is that each presenter is allowed 20 images in a power point presentation that is shown for 20 second each– giving 6 minutes and 40 seconds of fame before the next presenter is up. This keeps presentations concise, interest level up and gives the opportunity for more people to express their ideas.

Hospitality Design (HD) Magazine, published 10 times a year, is the premier trade magazine serving the field of hospitality design. It connects owners, operators, purchasing agents, designers, and architects involved in the design of hotels, resorts, restaurants, cruise ships, nightclubs/lounges, spas, and all other hospitality-oriented projects. HYPERCULTURE – an installation by Victor Muñiz
Hyperculture refers to the staggering rate of change in modern technological societies. It is the condition of perpetual interregnum. In other words hyperculture is our constant state of being in between while information continues to flow with increasing volume. The rampant illnesses of our society–including the disintegration of the family, the degradation of the environment, unlimited commercialism, and unrelenting stress are familiar to us all.
Victor Muñiz examines the profundity of Hyperculture according to the Gaian hypothesis that the earth is a self-regulating organism. Can the same be said of information? Does it lead a life of its own or is it merely a disposable by-product of mass culture?
In the age of information Muñiz is a terabit of talent.

Miami21 is an urban planning document for the City of Miami. It is supposed to create a greener, more people-friendly City. There is a lot to like about the “big picture” objectives.
**
The Devil is in the Details, however. The City has an old tradition of making deals that are against the public’s good.
**
It is up to YOU, the resident, to be sure that when they say it is “Your City, Your Plan” that this is true.
People participating makes a HUGE difference in the results. Numbers matter: the more, the better.
**
To see current planning documents, check out:

Familiarize yourself with areas and issues that matter to you, your friends and family.
**
For any questions, please call the Miami 21 hotline at (305) 416-2121

It is a minute’s walk to Scotty’s Landing for burgers, dolphin sandwiches and beverage breaks.

Dutes Miller and Stan Shellabarger are the two artist that together form, Miller & Shellabarger. Miller & Shellabarger will be the 10th artists to participate in Diet’s invitational series of exhibitions. Their work, which is often rooted in accessible performances, links them together as partners, procreators, specimens, and artists. Miller & Shellabarger take a comical, yet heartfelt everyday approach to the notion of collaboration. For their exhibition at Gallery Diet, Dutes and Stan will be performing Untitled (Pink Tube), a never ending, at least not to date, performance in which the duo sit across from each other patiently knitting a pink tube, their casual demeanor encouraging audience members to join them in conversation; inviting questions that range from the socio political to the mundane. The ritual of their performance lies in the ritual of the everyday, the casual tasks that two people perform when linked together.

Bass Museum of Art Reception – Simon Starling: Inverted Retrograde Theme, USA 8/28/09

bass
Reception – Simon Starling: Inverted Retrograde Theme, USA (House for a Songbird)
Friday, August 28 – 7-9PM
Conceptual artist Simon Starling (b. 1967 Epsom, England) explores the relationships between craft, material, technique, social history, association and memory. Inverted Retrograde Theme, USA (House for a Songbird) is comprised of two scale models of prefabricated single-family houses that are pinned to the ceiling by tree branches. They are each a one fifth- scale recreation of existing homes located outside San Juan, Puerto Rico. Built in the 1960s, these houses were part of a postwar philanthropic effort in developing countries, financed by the New York-based Rockefeller Foundation.
Overlapping traditions, geographies and historical narratives, Starling combines the modernist theories of architect Simon Schmiderer (born Saalfedlden [Salzburg Province, Austria], 1911); died Highland Beach, FL April 2001), and Austrian composer and theorist Arnold Schonberg (born Vienna, 1874; died Los Angeles, 1951) who, in both of their respective fields, created rigid systems based on modular logic which were intended to enhance creativity. The architect was influenced by the composer, and was known to incorporate his musical theories in his work.
Simon Schmiderer, a faithful modernist, was best known for his “serial” housing, his motto being “one house in one hour.” He was the architect for the extensive residential building project in Puerto Rico during the 1960s, basing his designs on pre-formed, inexpensive, concrete modules with ample open windows, omitting glass to “integrate” the interior and exterior. The wire mesh around the houses represents the security measures the actual inhabitants of the project in Puerto Rico took to maintain their safety in the high-crime area, as the original architectural plan dismissed the inhabitants’ practical needs, and was comprised of all open spaces with no security. The sound of singing birds coming from inside the seemingly caged homes completes the startling visual metaphor.
The architect adapted the composer’s serialist techniques in his work, and Starling illustrates this idea into the installation by mirroring the structures. The title for the installation is derived from Schonberg’s compositional system which can be played as “original,” “inverted,” “retrograde” or “inverted retrograde.” Aspects of inversion and translocation (characteristic for twelve-tone music) were added to offer a new perspective of the modernist idea. Starling takes Schoenberg’s ideas further by flipping the houses upside down and pinning them to the ceiling, each balanced by one thin mahogany branch. The exhibition is on view through September 13, 2009.
Please join us on Friday August 28, from 7-9PM for a special reception. Beverages compliments of Dziac, Grolsch, and Cafe Bustelo. Hot Nights Cool Jazz featuring the Dave Fernandez Quartet from 7-9PM.
Free for Bass Museum members; $10 non- members.

The Space Techno Loft Presents Magda & Troy Pierce 8/29/09

TechnoLoft-May23
As if Desyn Masiello on The Terrace wasn’t enough, Space and the Techno Loft are extremely proud to present two more legends, continuing their dedication to cutting-edge and underground sounds.
This Saturday, August 29th, the Techno Loft plays host to two of the top DJ/Producers in the genre, Magda and Troy Pierce.
Hailing from Poland, Magda (real name Magdalena Chojnacka), got her start in the mid 1990s in New York’s then-vibrant dance music scene. With all forms of dance music gaining headway, she rapidly grew with it, gaining notoriety both on the decks and in the studio for her uncompromising sound. Changing attitudes in the Big Apple led her to depart in 2003, bringing her to her current home of Berlin. It was in Berlin where her current sound began to develop. Partnered with Troy Pierce and Marc Houle, she began to take advantage of the new possibilities present in production and DJing techniques brought upon by affordable new hardware and software. Eventually catching the attention of Richie Hawtin, Magda soon began to release material on Hawtin’s influential Minus label. Of course, never complacent, Magda soon established her own label, Items and Things, where she continues to produce to this day.
Joining her also this evening will be Troy Pierce. A longtime collaborator of Magda’s, Indiana native Pierce took his influence from the dynamic scenes of Chicago and Detroit. With Chicago as the stronghold of house, and Detroit the birthplace of techno, Troy’s style naturally has been hard to classify, with both of those genres and more, making it into his record bag. Soon after, with a stopover in New York in the late 1990s, Troy eventually moved to Berlin, where he began to work with Magda and Marc Houle. Encouraged by the two, Troy readily adapted his style to the new flavors and technology coming out of Germany’s capital, with an insatiable desire to satisfy the city’s notoriously picky club culture. This all paid off in 2006, with Troy hitting the road with Magda and Richie himself for a massive US tour, which solidified his name as one of the “go-to” guys in the techno and minimal scene.
And of course, the night will be rounded out by Techno Loft residents Maurizio + Danyelino and Dsan Powell.

Manny Prieres On Wetheat.Tv Studio Drive By Solo Exhibition: What We Do Is Secret at Spinello Gallery 8/29/09

“WHAT WE DO IS SECRET.” – THIS SATURDAY, AUG 29TH 2009 / 7-10PM
http://wetheat.tv/Prieres-DriveBy.html
SPINELLO GALLERY / DESIGN DISTRICT: 155 NE 38 ST, No. 101, Miami, FL – 33137
SOLO EXHIBITION: Manny Prieres / “What We Do Is Secret.”
OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday, August 29th, 7-10pm
Spinello Gallery (155 NE 38 St., No. 101, Miami Florida – 33137) is proud to present the much-anticipated solo exhibition by one of Miami’s original stars, Manny Prieres, “What We Do Is Secret.” The Cuban-American artist will feature a suite of haunting graphite and watercolor works on paper and sculpture . This will be Prieres’ debut exhibition with the gallery.
Prieres explains, “Every collision leaves a trace behind: debris, a trail of residue that marks the site where violence took place.” The work of Manny Prieres is that sort of remnant, the product of the clash between a traditional, temperamental heritage, and an intense, idiosyncratic counterculture. During the process of this convergence, a series of artifacts are created. They stand at the threshold of a new folklore: they are the iconography of a new tradition.
In this sense, Manny Prieres is an archaeologist, one that has painstakingly and lovingly preserved the objects of an unexplored civilization: their symbols, their gods, their rituals, and their lore. These artifacts bring up tales from the artist’s personal history, yet as a whole they create new narratives that, despite having hybrid elements from multiple sources of influence, are nevertheless moving towards an entirely different place.
Manny Prieres has been an active member of the Miami art scene for over ten years. From 1997-2004, Prieres ran one of Miami’s first influental alternative art spaces, BOX, alongside Jose Reyes and Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova. BOX played a crucial role in the development of the Miami art community.
Exhibition through September 26th, 2009.
SPINELLO GALLERY prides itself in exhibiting intelligent works of art in every medium by contemporary local Miami emerging artists. SPINELLO GALLERY has become the playground for unorthodox and experimental artists who don’t easily fit into the confines of the traditional gallery space. SPINELLO GALLERY is steadily making headway in the Miami Art Scene and beyond becoming a contender in the Art World.

Opening Reception at ArtCenter for The Flying Carpet by Pip & Duane Brant 9/5/09

carpet
The Flying Carpet
Pip & Duane Brant
Opening night on Saturday, September 5 from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. coincides with the Lincoln Road art walk
Pip Brant’s carpet is comprised of a found oriental rug, embroidery, silkscreen, brass ornaments, wood, car parts, electric motor, laser-light and rheostat controllers. The rug first entered Pip’s life in the early 1980s in Wyoming. The many adventures of Pip’s carpet were just taking shape when she had an epiphany: she would create an impotent “flying carpet” that only shakes and lights-up when foot pedals are engaged.
Duane’s installation pieces are dubbed “Sew Organs’ or interactive acoustical sound machines. In addition to the flying carpet, ArtCetner’s audience will be invited to play with these instruments that combine vintange sewing machines with shellacked, wooden acoustic forms that are electronically connecte to organs, cellos or old radios.
The show will run from September 4th – Ocotober 11th, 2009 at the ArtCenter/ South Florida’s Lincoln Road Gallery.

Educate Tomorrow’s primary mission in the US is to provide one-on-one educational mentors to foster care children who are turning 18 and “aging out” of the system. Since its founding in 2003, Educate Tomorrow has successfully implemented its mentoring programs, education programs and life skills camps across the nation. Additionally, it has reached internationally by continuing to support the work of its founders who established one of the first local language primary schools, adult literacy programs and boarding schools in the remote and impoverished village of Kabey Fo in Niger, West Africa.

From A Strange Town – One-Person Exhibition By Vicente Hernández at Cernuda Arte Opening 9/4/09

vicente

FROM A STRANGE TOWN
A ONE-PERSON EXHIBITION BY VICENTE HERNÁNDEZ at Cernuda Arte

OPENING RECEPTION WITH THE ARTIST: FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 7-10 P.M.

Cernuda Arte will host an exhibition of artwork by contemporary Cuban artist, Vicente Hernández entitled, From a Strange Town. The exhibit which inaugurated at the Servando Gallery in Havana will now show in Miami, Florida. The artist has been granted a visitor’s visa by the US government to attend the Opening Reception of his solo show at the gallery on Friday, September 4, from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m.

Vicente Hernández has had one-person exhibitions in Cuba, The Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Panama, Venezuela, Spain, and the United States. This will be the artist’s second personal exhibition in the USA. Hernández resides with his family in Batabanó, Cuba and is represented by Cernuda Arte world-wide.

The exhibition, From a Strange Town, comprises more than thirty works on canvas and is accompanied by a thirty-six page full color catalog. Hernández’ paintings, grand in scale and vibrant colors, reveal a convoluted universe in which surreal elements and artifacts of multifarious nature move and float freely about in navigable seas and skies. Inspired by his native surroundings in Batabanó (a fisherman’s town south of Havana), the artist approaches his main plastic discourse – the massive migrations of people – from a contemporary perspective. In a distinct style of his own, the painter renders riveting and thought-provoking images, reminiscent of noteworthy painters who have marked history.

As professor, art critic and curator, Alejandro Anreus comments,
“…Recently I encountered the work of a young painter living and working in Cuba which has simply amazed me. His name is Vicente Hernández. He is a native son of Batabanó and a painter with a capital P. His pictures, canvases that range in size from the modest to the monumental, are synthesis of good drawing, balanced composition and painterly colors. Floating neighborhoods and islands inhabit his paintings, as do boats and ships, towers and flying machines. Within each one of these universes we encounter other worlds, where people struggle, make love, dream and escape, while animals are curious witnesses to human folly. Although I might find some antecedent “family member” within Cuban painting in Hernández’ work… I choose to see him as a homegrown Brueghel from Batabanó. Like the Flemish master, Hernández is very much a moralist with a compassionate sense of humor. Brueghel was anchored in the humanism of Erasmus. I have been told Hernández is a devout Baptist, therefore he is probably anchored in this most libertarian of Christian faiths.”

CS Gallery exhibition by Nicaraguan-American artist Roger Danilo Carmona opening 8/28/09

Show08-28-09

CS Gallery
787 NE 125 St, North Miami, FL 33161
ROGER DANILO CARMONA
Open-Source Meme
August 28 – September 25, 2009
Chirinos Sanchez is pleased to present an exhibition of works on paper by Nicaraguan-American artist Roger Danilo Carmona.
This is the artist’s first solo exhibition in our gallery. The artist previously curated the exhibition “Fresh Ingredients”, in our first gallery exhibition debut in August 2007.
(Image Title: Mustard Seed and Yogurt Pullao, 2007, Gofun, crayon, oil on paper)
For the current show, the artist splits the gallery into three sections: The Pyramid, The Character and The Action.
Upon entering the gallery to the left, The Pyramid consists of a collection of twenty-eight works on paper made within the last two years. The Pyramid is seen as a surrogate of a social response, where each drawing requests an act of open conversation. The form of the upside-down pyramid, in its bizarre composition and language, is reminiscent of a structure which the artist’s ancestors – possibly Mayan – built. The colorful gesture and fresh compositions in some of the drawings contradict the communication which other drawings of a more serious, hermitic action make the viewer consider.
To the right of the gallery, The Character consists of five “portraits”. In the initial appearance of the drawings, the forms are much more complex in their character than the opposite wall. The artist speaks of these drawings “as individuals that crave a position of higher power. The ways in which the forms are drawn are examples of the type of “Bernie Madoff” characters that walk among us.” These drawings were made during the artist’s study at The Milton Avery School of Arts, Bard College in upstate New York, where he is a 2010 MFA candidate.
The third section of the gallery represents The Action. The work consists of two drawings that meet in the corner. The meeting is seen as a conflict that establishes territory through repetitive discourse.
Roger Danilo Carmona (b. 1983 Leon, Nicaragua) lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

*Friday “The Funk Hits the Fan”
w/ Special guest, legendary Philly dj/ producer King Britt (fivesix media)
You certainly won’t find an artist with a better potential to transpose the many different musical genres into a marvelous standard of grooves full of feelings than Philadelphia native King Britt. His comprehension of what we should call the phonographic culture lies much ahead than the common ones. With a work forged a mixture of Jazz, Soul, Funk, the percussive Afro beats, Hip Hop, Broken Beats, Deep House and the new Electronic Jazz fusion, King Britt has proved to be a very eclectic and open minded soul.

King Britt was the DJ of the Grammy winner Hip Hop-Jazz fusion band Digable Planets. His career pointed to different directions as he started to travel the World on Digable tours and with his own ones on the international House scene as Disc Jockey. At the beginning of his journey as solo DJ, he began a partnership with the well-known DJ/ producer and owner of Ovum Recordings: Josh Wink, who also contributed for the development of his career. One of their first projects together was E-Culture, the one behind the classic “Tribal Confusion” released by Strictly Rhythm in 1990.

King’s seventies funk roots of Philadelphia are also represented through his Sylk 130 project, which brought the traditional Philly sounds elements and projects with artists such as Ursula Rucker, Alma Horton and Alison Crockette in a combination of a funk-soul aura. The highlight of this alias was attained with the long play “When The Funk Hits The Fan”, an excellent combination of the traditional Plilly soul grooves blended with contemporary electronica.
King’s talents as a remixer resulted in a total subversion of rhythms and of the original tunes conceptions, from the works of Yoko Ono and Femi Kuti to the ones of Erykah Badu and Macy Gray. Perhaps that should be the cause why he received, as well as other celebrities like Masters At Work and Joe Claussell, the invitation by the people from legendary Jazz label Verve Records to give his contribution to the acclaimed compilation “Verve Remixed”. He finally owned the title on the category “Remix of the Year” with Danny Tenaglia and Basement Jaxx, which granted him the status of one of the most respected remixes all over the World.
Don’t miss this intimate evening w/ King Britt as he returns to Miami this Friday @ the Electric Pickle. doors 10pm -5am

“Cinema GREEN”
A NEW environmental film series in collaboration with: ECOMB The Environmental Coalition of Miami & the Beaches
FOOD, Inc.
(A documentary film by Robert Kenner/USA/2009/94 min.)
In Food, Inc., filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation’s food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government’s regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation’s food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. We have bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, herbicide-resistant soybean seeds, even tomatoes that won’t go bad, but we also have new strains of E. coli—the harmful bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73,000 Americans annually. We are riddled with widespread obesity, particularly among children, and an epidemic level of diabetes among adults.
The film on Friday will be followed by a Q&A with an organic farmer Gabriele Marewski from Paradise Farms Organic.
The film on Saturday will be followed by a Q&A with Chef Jeff Mcinnis from De Lido Beach Club at the Ritz Carlton.
