Please bear with me while I get very excited. Bar 721 makes me unreasonably ecstatic. It is the best bar in Miami Beach, hands down. My enamorment with this establishment is fueled by several crucial factors I shall outline here.

Smoke free? Check!
Amazing happy hour? Check!
Friendly staff and clientele? Check!
Appealing, full liquor cocktail menu with exotic drinks? Check!
Comfortable couches? Clean venue? Nice Decor? Check, Check, Check!
WELCOMES MY DOG!?!?!?!? CHECK!!!!!

So while I calm myself down I’ll also point out that while this is a gay friendly establishment, there has been a mixed crowd every time I’ve visited. It’s large enough to feel spacious but small enough to be manageable and cozy. Music differs from night to night but at times they bring in DJs in the later evening hours. TVs are there and usually on if you would like to watch sports, but no food is served. Friendly staff usually allows you to bring in to-go stuff from local eateries, though.

721 is in the space that used to be the “Laundry Bar.” Please do not let this scare you. There is not a hint of this venue’s former self present any more. Everything has been gutted and it doesn’t resemble the old dive at all. Cheers!

Sofia Lumi Bentos was born January 8th, 2007. She was just 2 months old, as a horrifying diagnosis, her life dramatically and forever changed…
Her liver had a deficient Biliary Atresia and she went to surgery in March 2007 at the Miami Children’s Hospital. To give her a chance to survive, she needed special care, regular Hospital visits, medications and repeated Blood transfusion, to maintain her hemoglobin levels… Even so it was obvious, that soon or later she needs to undergo a liver transplant, and so to live…

Sofia’s life was not done yet with tragedy and as her journey developed, the parents split, due a reckless, negligent, disrespectful and abusive father… Sofia was more isolated and only her mother’s faith and hope kept her alive. By end 2008 things were about to change for Sofia and her mommy Sanna Vaarna… Love was on its way! Sanna Vaarna a native from the artic Circle – Finland, is a Music Academy pianist-songwriter, and at that time in search, even with the conditions of Sofia to follow her dream, creating and writing Music!

December 2008, I met Sanna Vaarna and her daughter Sofia. Immediately I fell in love with this fun and bright child… We were excited and full of hopes, yet the biological father continued to deceive Sofia by not sharing her new found family by denying, Child support and even we tried to keep a fair and genuine relationship to his daughter, his relation to her eventually faded away…

Sofia is a bright, quirky, creative and full of life little girl. She speaks English, Spanish and Finnish. She knows the ALPHABET and writes and spells words! She’s also drown to the piano and plays the songs ‘Twinkle – Twinkle’, ‘Brother Jacobs (Frere Jacques – French)’ and ‘Happy Birthday’… all that at 31/2 years of age!

In August 2010, Sofia’s Varicous succumbed, and she underwent a scope and banding surgery.
Sofia’s conditions worsened, by the discovery of suspected Tuberculosis spots on her liver which, were previously detected by the Miami Children’s Hospital, but they regarded it as benign …
The New more in depth Analysis at the Jackson Memorial Hospital revealed, it was better to cure it. So since the past 5 months Sofia has been taking 10 medications and 2 IV’s, 24 hours around the clock to cure her acute infection due her liver ceasing completely to work.

Sanna and I have put all our strength to overcome the afforded care and more… Our Sleep shrunk to an average of barely 3 hours a night… We finally overcame the Tuberculosis, and now Sofia is back actively on the Liver Transplant list!

The Tremendous efforts and also the psychological pressures are not avoidable, and in search to surmount all financial issues related to the Transplant procedures, we have joined the National Foundation for Transplants (NFT). Together we will work to raise funds to cover the amazing cost for the pre, during and post transplant –related expenses. The National Foundation for Transplants (NFT) is a national charity dedicated to organizing and guiding communities in raising funds for transplant-needy patients. Hand in Hand and also with your help, we will work together to reach our first Goal and raise an amount of US $ 25,000.00

The News Lounge opened in the Summer of 2008 in the courtyard located at the center of 55th Street Station. It is the crown jewel of this mixed-use complex, located just north of the Soyka restaurant and adjacent to Sushi Siam.The News Lounge’s roots stem from the News Café on Ocean Drive, which was founded in 1988. There’s a new night life venue on the Miami scene, and it made quite an impression on this young woman.

Enter the venue from a downtown Miami street where a bouncer shows you through a small lobby and to a large stairway leading up and into the night’s adventure. Scope the room and note Ecco Lounge is small, though not cramped and feels quite comfortable. The drinks are strong and almost cheap by this sobe girl’s standards. The bartenders and other staff do their job competently and with a smile. On the night of my visit, the music was outstanding so props to the events staff for booking awesome electronic music talents Kate Simko and local Sebastian Cariaga.

The set up of the room lends itself to drinking, dancing and relaxing. The DJ booth is slightly raised and in front of a window facing the dance area and bar behind it. To one side are couches if you prefer to relax and on the other is what I like to call the Washroom VIP. Yes, technically it is just a bathroom, but it’s freakin great! Lovely decor, quite clean, ample stalls, sinks, and supplies, and an adorable seating area. Guys, don’t get suspicious about your girl’s party habits if she lingers too long in the ladies’ room. She’s probably just chatting up her friends in a quiet environment.

My only disappointment is that smoking is allowed inside, but such is the status quo in Florida so my gripe would probably be more useful were it correctly directed to our fair state’s public health department, but I digress.

I hope Ecco Lounge continues to book DJs and plan unique events, because it is quite possibly perfect for my current after dark desires. Volume, lighting, staff, drinks, and even temperature were all on point. Now when was the last time you could say that about a night life venue?

Today, SMIRNOFF announces that on November 27, 2010, Miami will receive the best of London’s nightlife culture as part of The Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange Project – a one-of-a-kind global experience in which 14 countries pair up to exchange crates containing the best of each country’s nightlife. In turn, London will receive the best of Miami’s homegrown nightlife.

Continuing on a mission to inspire and enable unique experiences, the Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange Project has uncovered the best of global nightlife, and will now celebrate the outcome when two very different cultures collide to create something extraordinary. A community of more than 125,000 people from across the country submitted suggestions for what best characterizes nightlife in the U.S – from fashion trends and musical styles to locally inspired cocktails – via Facebook (www.facebook.com/ smirnoffus). Once all of the suggestions were in, DJ Irie, the U.S. curator and Miami Nightlife expert, selected the ones that best represented Miami’s vibrant and varied nightlife. M’DELA Bio:
As a little girl, M’DELA would roam around her living room in Lima, Peru, holding her plastic recorder as a microphone and singing along to the songs of ABBA, Olivia Newton-John, and The Cure. Who knew that her ‘kid’ performances would evolve into a long music career?

Always rooted in the music, she fell in love with the dance music of the 80s and 90s and absorbed all the pop and rock influences from Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Blondie, New Order, Erasure, The Cure, Flock of Seagulls, Eurythmics, B-52’s, Michael Jackson, and Softcell.

“Siempre Te Amare” came to life with her adaptation of the The Cure’s “Love Song” in Spanish, “it really spoke to me…” confessed the singer/songwriter and in her words she said, “it reflects the longing for true love and, at the same time, the promise that love will triumph over evil.”

The song was produced in Mexico City by the country’s top remixing producer Charly Gutierrez (DJ Carlos G) whose work includes over 400 remixes from top selling artists such as Paulina Rubio. The video was shot in South Beach with the famous Miami skyline in the background. The production is ready for a 2010 fall release.

M’DELA’s venture into the Dance Music world stems from a professional career as an award-winning songwriter and successful performances in Latin America.

This gringa doesn’t even know how to properly pronounce the word “bodegon,” but that didn’t stop her from getting into the groove at Bodegon de Brickell last weekend at its sneak preview.

Located inside the  Four Ambassadors Building at 801 Brickell Bay Dr., the new hot spot transcends categories. Start with an amazing restaurant, add a healthy pinch of nightclub, glaze with some swanky lounge, and you just might have it. More practically, the place is neither small nor big, but is very open. Tiered levels with tables into the back of the space lend both privacy and focus to the dance floor, DJ booth, and stage down below. An impressive array of lighting and digital media keep you interested while the ample seating allows for maximum comfort.

For me and my crew of two others, the night felt effortless. I took my first try at dancing Salsa since my Padawan days in Miami, when I regretfully worked at an unspeakably tacky South Beach staple for longer than I’d like to admit (cough *Mango’s* cough). Alas, I had the basic 1-2-3 of salsa down, and turns out that rhythm is incredulously stubborn. With either  a sexy Cuban or confident Venezuelan as a partner, I was able to keep up.

While the band kept me moving, the bartender kept me sipping. A stiff cocktail or two, a generous sampling of the restaurant’s best dishes, and even complimentary champagne brought Bodegon de Brickell to that place all resto/lounges want to be: memorable. It’s easy to let one little thing or another slide in the hectic world of hospitality, but Bodegon understands it has stiff competition and is up for the challenge. We ended the night eager to discover what more fun there was in store.

Miami-based recording artist Corey Michaels will premiere the music video for his infectious first single “Rockstar” from his debut album, Who Killed the King?, with an exclusive performance at legendary Miami Beach nightclub TWIST on Friday, October 1 at 11 p.m. The music video will premiere in the Frolic Video Lounge at 1:00 am followed by a performance by Corey. The music video for “Rockstar” was filmed at celebrity favorite Cheeseburger Baby (http://cheeseburgerbaby.net/), a few blocks from TWIST South beach. September is the month when the party season begins. And boy did it shows. Since the beginning of September I have not stopped in covering events but for this story, I wanted to concentrate one special night where I went to three great events in the Magic City. I networked, socialize and had a great time in all of them.

First of all, my night started with a Meet Your Neighbors event at Grand Central. The purpose of this monthly event is for the people living in the Downtown Miami and surrounding areas to get to know one another by networking with each other. Grand Central hosted its space for this event which served it’s purpose as a great venue for the amount of people. Vendors also showcased their businesses as well as KFC with South Florida Baking provided the appetizers with an open bar sponsored by Sagatiba Cachaca. I met new people as well as greeted old acquaintances.

Since I was alredy in Downtown, I went to Trini in Private Salon located on Brickell Avenue. The event was spectacular! Other than great appetizers being served by Inca Restaurant next door, great cocktail drinks were offered. In addition, a fashion show featuring the latest fall trends and some cool hair styles were showcased. The difference in this one was that the models walked the run way to the hair style seat that was already located outside and after the hair do was set, the models walked the red carpet. This signifies that one can do the hairstyle at Trini and off you go to party! Fabulous!

Now with two parties under my belt, I headed over to South Beach which I had not been there for months. Ocean Drive Magazine was celebrating their Fall Fashion Week in which they hosted some fashion shows in various locations on the Beach. On this night, it was Perry Ellis’ turn. The location: The Raleigh Hotel on Collins Avenue. When one came into the hotel, the male models were displayed as if they were mannequins. Many guests even tookpictures with them. Cocktails were sponsored by Chambord Vodka amidst the backdrop of the many photo celebrities that hung on the walls of the hotel.

I had a great time in all three events not to mention the goody bags that were given in all three. Miami is a mecca of many party destinations if you know who you need to know one can out out in the town to sample the many attributes that this lovely city has to offer.

South Miami got a huge boost as the long awaited grand opening of Segafredo came about on Sept 2, 2010 . Located in the heart of the South Miami this Segafredo location plans to compliment the already vibrant atmosphere the area has built up over the last couple of years. What better way to celebrate the opening of this global brand than to tap into its Italian roots in spectacular fashion? Owners Willy and Minerva Quintana are opening Segafredo South Miami in grand style.

Willy and Minerva Quintana are not only husband and wife but form an electric duo who realized the potential for the popular Segafredo brand in south Miami. Willy who is a self proclaimed “gear head” jumped at the chance to merge the Italian coffee house and eatery with the sexy, heart pumping legacy that its home country has in auto racing to make for a fabulous grand opening. Italy has a deep and rich motor sports history. One thinks of Ferrari, Alfa Romero, Fiat, Maserati, and Lamborghini. The Segafredo grand opening plans to tap into that legacy. Guests were surrounded by Italian sports cars, models in racing inspired outfits, and professional race car drivers brought in by the Homestead Speedway. Event goers had the opportunity to sample bites from the Segafredo kitchen and sip on delicious cocktails. The grand opening will push the boundaries of South Miami which has turned into a “go-to” area for the South Florida professional. Willy and Minerva felt that Segafredo would be the exclamation point in an increasingly trendy area.

The grand opening for Segafredo South Miami took place with a ribbon cutting featuring South Miami Mayor Phillip Stoddard, President of Red Sunset Merchants Association Amy Donner, Chamber South President Mary Scott Russell, Executive Vice President of First National Bank of South Miami Veronica Flores and other important figures from the area. The event also featured live music by popular band Suénalo.

To say that things have been a bit…nuts in Miami this summer is quite an understatement. The expectations and prayers of an entire city were met the moment some tall black dude went on TV and uttered the words “….I’ve decided to take my talents to South Beach”. You may have heard of him. That of course turned down the happy in a lot of places but, that’s for their therapists to handle. In the city of Miami, Lebron James joining Dwayne Wade, and Chris Bosh thrown in for good measure has perked the city up more than just a little bit, and game one is yet to be played. No one really cares what Charles Barkley says, not here.

A city known for it’s party atmosphere and it’s ability to make celebrities let their hair down, it is not a stranger to good times. Add to that bikinis and Lamborghini’s parading on Ocean Drive for no special reason, it’s no wonder why so many out-of-towners deposit regularly in their piggy banks for that SOBE getaway. However for Miami hip-hop artist Two Side this is home sweet home.

Local entertainment should benefit greatly from the Lebron, Wade, and Bosh triple threat, that’s to be expected. But this upswing isn’t just related to the flashy nightclubs, which already draws the stars to come out and play, but also to the local music scene which should feel the effects of the attention the city will now command. For independent artists and musicians in the magic city, that’s music to their ears. For those who haven’t really thought about it, think about it. This could actually be a sweet deal. And a much needed one.

An indie scene that sometimes seems to only live in the shadows of Miami, is alive and kicking, though sometimes kicking at the wall. There have been a few that have made it out and through the door in the name of the MIA; giving hope to those still looking for the key. The list of artists that went from the front line grind, to stardom includes names like Uncle Luke, Trick Daddy, Trina, Pitbull, Flo Rida, Rick Ross, T-pain, Plies and Cool and Dre to name a few.

As great as that list is however, it fails to give us the true feel for the amount of talent that’s simmering all across the city and surrounding area. For those that are truly about their business this could be a great chapter in the local music scene. Who will take advantage of this? What new artists will emerge as the byproduct of this madness caused by it’s friendly local basketball team? It’s not the easiest thing to predict, however Miami rapper/producer Two Side, is doing his part to make sure, he’s on that list.
Growing with the popularity of his You Tube channel thetwoshow1, and his recent performances, people are taking notice. His single, available on Itunes, “Moonlight and Stars” written and produced by Two Side (listen on You Tube) is usually all it takes for a new fan to be born. This is something this Miami rapper doesn’t take lightly.

“Man, I don’t even know what to say about the love you know? It’s nice to get that kind of response from people, you work really hard as an unsigned artist to get people’s attention, so when finally you start getting a response you know, it makes it all so worth it. I got a long way to go, I mean, I want millions of people to know my work, but I’m working on it. So far so good”

With the momentum Two Side has and the fresh new energy in the Miami air thanks to Lebron and the gang, timing could not be better for this budding artist to come out blazing like Yosemite Sam. “It’s crazy what Miami feels like right now, I’m lovin it man. My grind is always up, but this is definitely kickin’ it up a gear.”

RESO is a rising star, gaining worldwide notoriety for his technoid inspired productions which often transcend the dubstep tag that many have easily slotted him into. The State Of is the product of the marriage between Steph Taylor’s edgy piano/synth playing and Nabedi Osorio’s electronic-like live drumming. Their dark pop sensibility is born out of their hometown of Miami, FL and is reminiscent of artists ranging from the Bjork and the Eurythmics to Radiohead and the Cure. Taylor’s style of playing is often percussive and dark where Osorio’s drumming is melodic and when coupled, they create a dynamic sound larger than what’s expected out of two people.

I was born in Havana, Cuba in 1971. I came to the U.S. in 1980 at the age of 9 during the Mariel boatlift. Since I could remember I’ve always been into art. As a kid, I remember being into drawing cartoons and even drawing anatomical posters for my mom who was a biology teacher. In high school, I started doing graffiti with my friends and it became a way of life during the late eighties. After I got into college I learned about contemporary artists, working with other media and art history. I also learned about adding concept and meaning to a work of art.
In my artwork, I deal with issues important to me by being comical at times instead of in your face political. I reject art styles or working in a specific style. I use imagery that ranges from cartoons to realistic portraiture. I want the message of the piece to be the most important thing. I want the viewer at first to be drawn to the piece and then to question why he/she was attracted to it. Maybe with a dialogue between the viewer and the artwork, the viewer will realize that popular culture has programmed us to think a certain way.

City of Miami Official 114 Birthday Celebation By Betty Alvarez

Fellow Miamians gathered together to celebrate Miami’s Birthday in an evening filled with all the sights sounds and tastes of our Magic City. Guests enjoyed the live performances by Suenalo, and DJ Spam, tastings from local restaurants. Cocktails were served compliments of Grey Goose Vodka and more. Rudy Gil from Secret Society took us back to our younger years singing the hit songs that made him famous. Jon Secada made the honors to sing “Happy Birthday” to Miami. Finally, guests enjoyed the coconut rum cake made from the exquisite hands of the pastry chef of the Hotel Intercontinental.
