La Fee Verte, South Florida’s tease burlesque and absinthe club, and local purveyors of fun Jose Ortiz, Omar Gonzalez and Tony Ferro will celebrate the launch of the club’s newest monthly soirée “The Cuckoo Club†this Monday, October 4 at 10 p.m.
The mixed party – that means all gays, straights and everyone else is welcome – will be hosted by fashionista and designer Jiussana Briseno and party fixture Michael Stanley. Guests will enjoy complimentary cocktails from 10 to 11:30 p.m. and dance the night away to the beats of South Florida’s DJ J Felix spinning classic house in the downstairs “Burlesque Lounge.†Bitch Pop (think heavy dance hits from the likes of Beyoncé, Rihanna, Britney Spears) and Hip-Hop will be played in the upstairs “Nutcracker Suite.†In addition, everyone in attendance will witness tantalizing burlesque performances by lead temptress Nicole Soden of the club’s Madames du Mischief dance group and crazy freak shows by Wild Child, Belaxis and Geraldine.

Miami-based recording artist Corey Michaels will premiere the music video for his infectious first single “Rockstar†from his debut album, Who Killed the King?, with an exclusive performance at legendary Miami Beach nightclub TWIST on Friday, October 1 at 11 p.m. The music video will premiere in the Frolic Video Lounge at 1:00 am followed by a performance by Corey. Guests can expect a wild set that is sure to entertain the crowd. After the performance, Corey will be gifting t-shirts and copies of his album to his fans during a meet and greet/signing period. The music video for “Rockstar†was filmed at celebrity favorite Cheeseburger Baby (http://cheeseburgerbaby.net/), a few blocks from TWIST South beach. Inspired by movies such as Scarface and Party Monster, and works by David LaChapelle, the video features a multitude of interesting characters led by Corey Michaels himself as they take over the restaurant for a night of debauchery. “The video takes the viewer on a journey filled with unexpected surprises. I wanted a video that reflected not only my lifestyle, but an era of true glamour and fun,†says Corey.
Corey Michaels has written and produced pop/dance music for over six years. After living in Amsterdam, NL he moved back to Miami, FL in the fall of 2008 and began recording Who Killed the King?. The album is described as a fusion of American pop music with Eurodance sounds as each song is a pulsating club banger. Corey has performed all over the world including Exit Club and Piano Bar in Amsterdam, NL and the Florida International University “Break the Silence†pride event. September is the month when the party season begins. And boy did it shows. Since the beginning of September I have not stopped in covering events but for this story, I wanted to concentrate one special night where I went to three great events in the Magic City. I networked, socialize and had a great time in all of them.
First of all, my night started with a Meet Your Neighbors event at Grand Central. The purpose of this monthly event is for the people living in the Downtown Miami and surrounding areas to get to know one another by networking with each other. Grand Central hosted its space for this event which served it’s purpose as a great venue for the amount of people. Vendors also showcased their businesses as well as KFC with South Florida Baking provided the appetizers with an open bar sponsored by Sagatiba Cachaca. I met new people as well as greeted old acquaintances.
Since I was alredy in Downtown, I went to Trini in Private Salon located on Brickell Avenue. The event was spectacular! Other than great appetizers being served by Inca Restaurant next door, great cocktail drinks were offered. In addition, a fashion show featuring the latest fall trends and some cool hair styles were showcased. The difference in this one was that the models walked the run way to the hair style seat that was already located outside and after the hair do was set, the models walked the red carpet. This signifies that one can do the hairstyle at Trini and off you go to party! Fabulous!
Now with two parties under my belt, I headed over to South Beach which I had not been there for months. Ocean Drive Magazine was celebrating their Fall Fashion Week in which they hosted some fashion shows in various locations on the Beach. On this night, it was Perry Ellis’ turn. The location: The Raleigh Hotel on Collins Avenue. When one came into the hotel, the male models were displayed as if they were mannequins. Many guests even tookpictures with them. Cocktails were sponsored by Chambord Vodka amidst the backdrop of the many photo celebrities that hung on the walls of the hotel.
I had a great time in all three events not to mention the goody bags that were given in all three. Miami is a mecca of many party destinations if you know who you need to know one can out out in the town to sample the many attributes that this lovely city has to offer.

Segafredo in South Miami celebrates its Grand Opening By Betty Alvarez
South Miami got a huge boost as the long awaited grand opening of Segafredo came about on Sept 2, 2010 . Located in the heart of the South Miami this Segafredo location plans to compliment the already vibrant atmosphere the area has built up over the last couple of years. What better way to celebrate the opening of this global brand than to tap into its Italian roots in spectacular fashion? Owners Willy and Minerva Quintana are opening Segafredo South Miami in grand style.
Willy and Minerva Quintana are not only husband and wife but form an electric duo who realized the potential for the popular Segafredo brand in south Miami. Willy who is a self proclaimed “gear head†jumped at the chance to merge the Italian coffee house and eatery with the sexy, heart pumping legacy that its home country has in auto racing to make for a fabulous grand opening. Italy has a deep and rich motor sports history. One thinks of Ferrari, Alfa Romero, Fiat, Maserati, and Lamborghini. The Segafredo grand opening plans to tap into that legacy. Guests were surrounded by Italian sports cars, models in racing inspired outfits, and professional race car drivers brought in by the Homestead Speedway. Event goers had the opportunity to sample bites from the Segafredo kitchen and sip on delicious cocktails. The grand opening will push the boundaries of South Miami which has turned into a “go-to†area for the South Florida professional. Willy and Minerva felt that Segafredo would be the exclamation point in an increasingly trendy area.
The grand opening for Segafredo South Miami took place with a ribbon cutting featuring South Miami Mayor Phillip Stoddard, President of Red Sunset Merchants Association Amy Donner, Chamber South President Mary Scott Russell, Executive Vice President of First National Bank of South Miami Veronica Flores and other important figures from the area. The event also featured live music by popular band Suénalo.

Embodying the nightclub’s name, Spazio Nero, the most talked about hotspot in the downtown Miami/Brickell area, is outfitted in all things noir, from the black, plush leather couches, to the black marble and stainless steel bar. Hints of light blue are scattered around the club on perfectly aligned pillars beneath the bar and on oversized mirrors placed high above. Silver hues wash over the black crocodile DJ booth standing tall in the spacious venue and also delicately painted on the black wallpaper, creating intricate patterns on the walls. The nightclub features 25 feet high ceilings, an elevated DJ booth, a one-of-a-kind advanced multi-zoned distribution audio system and a computer controlled lighting program by Infinite Audio Systems. To say that things have been a bit…nuts in Miami this summer is quite an understatement. The expectations and prayers of an entire city were met the moment some tall black dude went on TV and uttered the words “….I’ve decided to take my talents to South Beach”. You may have heard of him. That of course turned down the happy in a lot of places but, that’s for their therapists to handle. In the city of Miami, Lebron James joining Dwayne Wade, and Chris Bosh thrown in for good measure has perked the city up more than just a little bit, and game one is yet to be played. No one really cares what Charles Barkley says, not here.
A city known for it’s party atmosphere and it’s ability to make celebrities let their hair down, it is not a stranger to good times. Add to that bikinis and Lamborghini’s parading on Ocean Drive for no special reason, it’s no wonder why so many out-of-towners deposit regularly in their piggy banks for that SOBE getaway. However for Miami hip-hop artist Two Side this is home sweet home.
Local entertainment should benefit greatly from the Lebron, Wade, and Bosh triple threat, that’s to be expected. But this upswing isn’t just related to the flashy nightclubs, which already draws the stars to come out and play, but also to the local music scene which should feel the effects of the attention the city will now command. For independent artists and musicians in the magic city, that’s music to their ears. For those who haven’t really thought about it, think about it. This could actually be a sweet deal. And a much needed one.
An indie scene that sometimes seems to only live in the shadows of Miami, is alive and kicking, though sometimes kicking at the wall. There have been a few that have made it out and through the door in the name of the MIA; giving hope to those still looking for the key. The list of artists that went from the front line grind, to stardom includes names like Uncle Luke, Trick Daddy, Trina, Pitbull, Flo Rida, Rick Ross, T-pain, Plies and Cool and Dre to name a few.
As great as that list is however, it fails to give us the true feel for the amount of talent that’s simmering all across the city and surrounding area. For those that are truly about their business this could be a great chapter in the local music scene. Who will take advantage of this? What new artists will emerge as the byproduct of this madness caused by it’s friendly local basketball team? It’s not the easiest thing to predict, however Miami rapper/producer Two Side, is doing his part to make sure, he’s on that list.
Growing with the popularity of his You Tube channel thetwoshow1, and his recent performances, people are taking notice. His single, available on Itunes, “Moonlight and Stars” written and produced by Two Side (listen on You Tube) is usually all it takes for a new fan to be born. This is something this Miami rapper doesn’t take lightly.
“Man, I don’t even know what to say about the love you know? It’s nice to get that kind of response from people, you work really hard as an unsigned artist to get people’s attention, so when finally you start getting a response you know, it makes it all so worth it. I got a long way to go, I mean, I want millions of people to know my work, but I’m working on it. So far so good”
With the momentum Two Side has and the fresh new energy in the Miami air thanks to Lebron and the gang, timing could not be better for this budding artist to come out blazing like Yosemite Sam. “It’s crazy what Miami feels like right now, I’m lovin it man. My grind is always up, but this is definitely kickin’ it up a gear.”

RESO is a rising star, gaining worldwide notoriety for his technoid inspired productions which often transcend the dubstep tag that many have easily slotted him into. Reso’s aural identity is a densely layered, high octane tapestry, rich with musical texture and colour, which sets him apart from the minimal sparseness of many of his fellow producers. With a busy DJ schedule, Reso has been smashing dancefloors from Newcastle to Nottingham and London, whilst regularly hitting Europe.
Mary Anne Hobbs has been a fervent supporter of the young producer, commissioning a special 20-minute mix for her Radio One Breezeblock show back in January 2007. Reso has worked with Burial, engineering his critically acclaimed remix of Jamie Woon’s Wayfaring Stranger. The State Of is the product of the marriage between Steph Taylor’s edgy piano/synth playing and Nabedi Osorio’s electronic-like live drumming. Their dark pop sensibility is born out of their hometown of Miami, FL and is reminiscent of artists ranging from the Bjork and the Eurythmics to Radiohead and the Cure. Taylor’s style of playing is often percussive and dark where Osorio’s drumming is melodic and when coupled, they create a dynamic sound larger than what’s expected out of two people.

I’m a 35 year old, mostly self taught visual artist (painter). I grew up in Orlando, Fl. and moved to Miami in 2001. My work mostly expresses and explores my unconscious mind in mostly automatic abstract techniques. I also like to make imagined and real portraits of people.

I was born in Havana, Cuba in 1971. I came to the U.S. in 1980 at the age of 9 during the Mariel boatlift. Since I could remember I’ve always been into art. As a kid, I remember being into drawing cartoons and even drawing anatomical posters for my mom who was a biology teacher. In high school, I started doing graffiti with my friends and it became a way of life during the late eighties. After I got into college I learned about contemporary artists, working with other media and art history. I also learned about adding concept and meaning to a work of art.
In my artwork, I deal with issues important to me by being comical at times instead of in your face political. I reject art styles or working in a specific style. I use imagery that ranges from cartoons to realistic portraiture. I want the message of the piece to be the most important thing. I want the viewer at first to be drawn to the piece and then to question why he/she was attracted to it. Maybe with a dialogue between the viewer and the artwork, the viewer will realize that popular culture has programmed us to think a certain way.

Fellow Miamians gathered together to celebrate Miami’s Birthday in an evening filled with all the sights sounds and tastes of our Magic City. Guests enjoyed the live performances by Suenalo, and DJ Spam, tastings from local restaurants. Cocktails were served compliments of Grey Goose Vodka and more. Rudy Gil from Secret Society took us back to our younger years singing the hit songs that made him famous. Jon Secada made the honors to sing “Happy Birthday” to Miami. Finally, guests enjoyed the coconut rum cake made from the exquisite hands of the pastry chef of the Hotel Intercontinental.

The young art aficionado selected the theme in honor of her favorite television drama, the stylized and provocative Golden Globe-winning series that follows Madison Avenue marketing executives circa 1960s Manhattan. The show takes place at 9:00 PM on Wednesday, August 11th on the second floor of Miami’s oldest live music venue; the legendary Tobacco Road (located at 626 South Miami Avenue). The program features a rare singer/songwriter-styled performance by Perdomo prior to the acoustic-jamming of The Coffee House Gypsies (with audience participation encouraged). The two performances will then be followed by an open drum circle finale. You must be 21 or older to attend. Second floor doors open at 8:30 PM and admission is $10 at the door. Camillus House is a registered 501(c)3 Non-profit agency that provides humanitarian services to poor and homeless men, women and children in Miami-Dade County in Southern Florida. Founded in 1960, it is one of the oldest and largest continuously operated charities in South Florida, providing a variety of services (including direct care for homeless individuals, treatment programs and job training for individuals with substance abuse and mental health issues, emergency, transitional, and permanent housing for individuals and families, and healthcare for the homeless and uninsured). Camillus House has grown over the past 50 years from a small overnight shelter into a full service center offering a full “continuum of care†for persons who are poor and homeless.

South Florida’s first tease burlesque and absinthe club celebrates the arrival of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim
On Saturday, July 17 at 11 p.m. La Fee Verte and Belle & Company host “LIGHTS, CAMERA…ABSINTHE†a soirée honoring top fashion industry photographers and professionals. Acclaimed, stylish shutterbugs such as Antoine Verglas, Greg Lotus, Beth Studenberg, Ben Shaul, Danny Cardozo, Billy Coleman, Dania Graibe and Navid will host the evening along with top agent Carole Ann Belle. Guests will enjoy complimentary cocktails from 11 p.m. to midnight courtesy of fenom Modern Absinthe and Van Gogh Blue Vodka and groove to the sounds of DJ Troy Kurtz.
