Duke University Exhibit, Not Just Mad Men Travels to Miami International University of Art & Design in South Florida
August 25, 2010
panel discussion of The Advertising Evolution: 5:30pm
opening reception for the exhibit: 7pm.

Miami International University of Art & Design recently announced its upcoming exhibit, Not Just Mad Men, an exhibit on loan from the Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History of the Duke University Libraries in Durham, North Carolina. An event will be held on August 25, 2010 with a panel discussion of industry experts opening the evening with The Advertising Evolution, at 5:30pm followed by the opening reception for the exhibit at 7pm.

The Advertising Evolution panel features industry experts discussing the graphic design and advertising industry in the 60s and how it has evolved through time. Industry leaders include:
Bruce Turkel of Turkel Advertising
Barry Zaid formerly of Push Pin Studios
Arthur Rockower Graphic Design instructor
Jason Inasi of Factory Interactive
Marie Fernandez-Leon of Imagery Creative

After the panel discussion, the 60s themed opening reception will move into the University’s main gallery. The timely exhibit itself is a collaboration with Duke University featuring documents and ad campaigns from the early 60s along with the University’s own additions to the exhibit including program specific items. For example, graphic design students are creating 60s era posters of current products, fashion students are highlighting the fashions of that time period, film students will be showcasing looped commercials, movies and TV shows, advertising students will have a retrospective of the 60s with a Miami focus, etc. The exhibit offers guests a unique perspective of the 60s advertising industry with a twist.

“The Duke University collaboration is the culmination of a vision I had over a year ago when I learned of their exhibit – I am thrilled to be able to bring this exciting exhibit to the students, faculty and staff, yet also add our own elements and creative energy to it” says Marcia Gomez, director of communications for Miami International University of Art & Design. “We too are thrilled as it is the first time Duke University has a traveling exhibit,” Jacqueline Reid Wachholz, director for the Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History at Duke University.

The exhibit will be on display until September 30 at which time will travel to The Art Institute of Jacksonville and The Art Institute of Tampa, both branches of Miami International University of Art & Design.

Sponsors for the event include The Advertising Federation of Greater Miami, Ad2 Miami, DPR Printing, Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce Creative Industries Committee, Spuntino Catering and student organizations: Adfed MIU, MIU Fusion, MIU Multi-Major and AIGA MIU.

Smirnoff Ice and Univision Radio launch second summer concert series featuring latin music artists at Nikki Beach on Friday, August 6, 2010.   The series kicks-off seaside at Nikki Beach with Grammy nominated reggaeton duo R.K.M & Ken-y.

Smirnoff Ice Summer Concert Series presented by Univision Radio Featuring R.K.M & Ken-Y at Nikki Beach Miami
The Smirnoff Ice Summer Concert Series kicked-off last Friday, August 6, 2010 at Nikki Beach in Miami with dynamic reggaeton duo R.K.M & Ken-Y. The beachside party was an affair for the books, featuring Enrique Santos from Mix 98.3 as the night’s MC, DJ NIKOLAS on the turntables alongside The brpr Group’s resident TJ Manu, and of course R.K.M & Ken-Y fans who earned their way in to the exclusive concert through Univision Radio’s local station giveaways and @SmirnoffMiami Twitter Trivia Contests.

As promised, the first concert of the 2010 series was more than just the musical event of the summer; it was a social media frenzy that satisfied its Twitter, Foursquare, and Stickybits savvy public to the fullest. The brpr Group’s TJ Manu took over Nikki Beach, giving every Tweep on site a chance to share a shout-out on the big screen, while broadcasting Foursquare check-ins and prompting partiers to scan every Smirnoff Ice barcode on site. The night’s social media maestros delighted Stickybits enthusiasts and introduced newbies to the new craze of barcode scanning by temp tattooing concert-goers with the Smirnoff Ice barcode, allowing them to share their R.K.M & Ken-Y experience with other Smirnoff Ice drinkers from across the globe. “This evening was a prime example of how we can take social media offline and bring it, instead, to the front line,” says The brpr Group’s Social Media Curator, Jennifer Batchelor, “we used everything we had at our disposal to take the conversation ‘mobile’ which enabled us to instantly tap in to the crowd’s stream of consciousness, engaging the fans in the moment rather than waiting for the after-thought.”

A first in Miami and new to the media world, Honorary Twitter Press Passes from The brpr Group were awarded to avid @SmirnoffMiami and @thebrprgroup followers as recognition of their outstanding social networking connectivity and continued support of the Twitterverse.

The crew from SocialBuzzTV was at the center of it all as they captured the night’s festivities on film, promising the most vivid recap of a night that will not likely be forgotten. Add this to the USTREAM feed shot right from the DJ/TJ booth and you would not have missed a beat. Additionally, favorite local photographers Marisa Matluck of NBC Miami and Anthony Jordon of The Miami New Times and Soul of Miami were on-site to capture the night’s debauchery with exclusive shots of R.K.M & Ken-Y and their ecstatic fans. The night was a celebration of the Grammy nominated duo’s escalating career as audience members danced to favorites like “Down”, which reached #1 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart, and radio sensations “Te Regalo Amores” and “Me Matas.”

Dubstep Massive presents: RESO + TRENCH 8/7/10

[MIAMI] Dubstep Massive presents: RESO + TRENCH
Saturday, 10:00pm
White Room – MIAMI
1306 North Miami Avenue
Miami, FL 33136-2816

RESO is a rising star, gaining worldwide notoriety for his technoid inspired productions which often transcend the dubstep tag that many have easily slotted him into. Reso’s aural identity is a densely layered, high octane tapestry, rich with musical texture and colour, which sets him apart from the minimal sparseness of many of his fellow producers. With a busy DJ schedule, Reso has been smashing dancefloors from Newcastle to Nottingham and London, whilst regularly hitting Europe.

Mary Anne Hobbs has been a fervent supporter of the young producer, commissioning a special 20-minute mix for her Radio One Breezeblock show back in January 2007. Reso has worked with Burial, engineering his critically acclaimed remix of Jamie Woon’s Wayfaring Stranger. More recently Reso’s remix of The Dubstitutes 2 Faced Rasta (Dubting) has been gathering strong support from some of Dubstep’s key players such as Benga, N-Type, Walsh and Rusko. With releases due on Hospital Records, Storming Productions, Destructive, Urban Graffiti and Skud, Reso is definitely one to catch! http://www.myspace.com/corgrimey

TRENCH is from Atlanta and one of the leading engineers for T.Is Grand Hustle label. Backed by artists from Shadow Law Recordings, Vision, Renegade Hardware, Evol Intent Recordings, Citrus, and Trillbass, as well as original material and exclusive mashups from his own production, get prepared to be relentlessly assaulted from today’s newest & unreleased Drum & Bass and Dubstep. Trench’s newest production smasher “Deadly” will be released on Trillbass Records on August 10, to couple the recent release of his brutal yet melodic remix of Wes Green’s “Fly Away” which is already gaining the attention of dance floors and DJs Nationwide. Trench is infamous for using 3 decks, and doing countless triple drops when he performs, leading many to coin him as the “Andy C of Dubstep”. Trust when we tell you, once you see Trench live, all other DJs will pale in comparison.

With special drink prices, DizTruktif, and Miami New Times “Best New Electronica Artist, SOMEJERK this is a night to celebrate music and talent.

Pamela Wasabi’s Artist Statement
MIA POP –Fashion Street Photography
Pamela photographs how the underground culture is expressing itself through fashion. Fashion is not a matter of trends but a matter of self-expression and communication. It’s a direct mirror of what’s going on in our pop culture.
She is interested in seeing someone’s unique sense for style. There is no right or wrong, just creative people shaping the culture with their passions; this time, reflected through their choice of clothes. Pamela’s way of displaying her photography is through a collage where she juxtaposed the street fashion shots one next to another. The message is to show what culture is about: everyone. Not one picture can generalize what is happening today. It’s the conglomeration of everyone’s artistic input and everyone’s personality that can tell what our culture is made off. Pamela Wasabi is documenting it.

Laurence M. Gartel
Retrospective
35–Years Of Digital Art

August 13- September 7, 2010
Cafeina Lounge And Gallery

Laurence Gartel diverts the inquisitive viewer of contemporary artistic practice miles from the preconceived notion of Computer Art into the realm of Fine Arts. For 35 years he has given the world a tangible and idealistic metaphor of the true meaning of an artist’s innovative discovery of what is considered “New Media.” His heroic artistry has propelled a cultural paradigm shift, and without his constant drive to push the boundaries of technology, the Digital Age would have not have been elevated to the aesthetic levels it has. Gartel’s use of new software and hardware as “dynamic brushes” paints a profound picture of “technology on canvas.”

As a pioneer of Digital Art many notable institutions have been captured by the strong concept of his pieces. He is the first Digital Artist to have his work in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of American History, and in 2007 a 1978 Digital Art video became a permanent part of the Collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London. In addition, in 1990 his Polaroid installation titled “Moz Ocean” was exhibition with the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York City. Gartel has exhibited in many other renowned institutions all over the world such as his upcoming contribution to “Computerkunst 2.010 at Museum der Stadt Gladbeck, Germany.”

Artists such as Andy Warhol have enlisted Gartel to teach him how to operate the Amiga Computer while he was creating an album cover for Debbie Harry (Blondie).Gartel has been commissioned by other celebrities like Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Versace others. On Friday August 13th, Cafeina Wynwood Lounge and Gallery, 297 NW 23 St. Miami, Florida will premier a thirty-five year retrospective. The exhibition will travel through the decades, with Laurence Gartel’s works as an “Autobiographical” guide.

Aaron Morgan Brown at 101/exhibit opening reception 9/11/10

Aaron Morgan Brown Goes Beyond The Narrative Into ‘Magic Realism’ For New Exhibition At 101/Exhibit
Caught Between the Physical and Metaphysical, “Arcana Du Jour” Debuts September 11
VIP reception from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
101/exhibit is located at 101 NE 40th Street, in the heart of Miami’s Design District.

Although Aaron Morgan Brown uses a narrative structure in his paintings, he denies being a “storyteller.” Brown considers his works as representations of “constructed dreaming,” using his own perception and memory to create alternative realities. Brown will bring his evocative paintings to 101/exhibit for an exhibition entitled Arcana Du Jour beginning Saturday, September 11, with a VIP reception from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at which the artist will be available to discuss his art with guests. The exhibition then runs through October 6, 2010.

Showing an interest in the subjective experience from an early age, it was only natural for him to gravitate toward the visual and performing arts. Brown uses his own experiences to create images of a reality that is not likely to exist. Whether he is juxtaposing the commonplace with the surreal or the fantastical with the everyday, Brown uses this magical imagery to allow the viewer to create his or her own subjective experience – like an ellipsis that the viewer sets out to finish.
Although Brown’s works are reminiscent of photorealistic documentations of the mundane, they go a step further, documenting the everyday of another reality. His paintings are technical representations of objects and environments that are easily recognizable, but not easily understood in their aggregate pictorial context.

Brown received his BFA from the University of Kansas, and his MFA from Syracuse University, graduating summa cum laude from both institutions and earning a coveted University Fellowship from Syracuse. He has received many awards over the years, including “Best in Shows” at the Masur Museum of Art, Monroe, LA; and the Ulrich Museum of Art, Wichita, KS; as well as prestigious grants from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and the Franz and Virginia Bader Fund. He has participated in solo and group exhibitions internationally, including “Natural Geometry” at the Wallspace Gallery, Ottawa, Canada; “Constructed Dreaming” at the Strecker-Nelson Gallery, Manhattan, KS; “Museology” at Limbo Fine Arts, San Diego, CA; and “Between Realities” at the Principle Gallery, Alexandria, VA. His works are included in numerous private and public collections, including the Beach Museum of Art, Manhattan, KS; the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art, Roswell, NM; and the Sweetwater Center for the Arts, Pittsburgh, PA. Brown’s paintings have also been featured in a number of international publications, such as New American Paintings, Harper’s Magazine, The Artist’s Magazine and International Artist Magazine.

101/exhibit is a unique space dedicated to showcasing provocative art and, as such, will provide an ideal backdrop for Brown and his work. By pushing boundaries and dissecting the predictable, the gallery is quickly gathering a strong following of fine art tastemakers and trailblazers. Owned and operated by Jerome Shaw, Sloan Schaffer and Adam Wolfson, 101/exhibit strives to provide a dynamic gathering place unrestricted by era, locale, or convention. For more information on the exhibition or 101/exhibit, call (305) 573- 2101 or visit www.101exhibit.com.

THE STATE OF
www.thestateofmusic.com
The State Of is the product of the marriage between Steph Taylor’s edgy piano/synth playing and Nabedi Osorio’s electronic-like live drumming. Their dark pop sensibility is born out of their hometown of Miami, FL and is reminiscent of artists ranging from the Bjork and the Eurythmics to Radiohead and the Cure. Taylor’s style of playing is often percussive and dark where Osorio’s drumming is melodic and when coupled, they create a dynamic sound larger than what’s expected out of two people.

“The State Of exemplifies that oxymoronic moment when something sparse becomes atmospheric – like the most electronic form of analog, or vice versa” -Broward New Times
“South Florida duo the State Of likes to keep pop tunes dark but upbeat. The ladies crank eerily pretty arrangements on the keys and back them with big, electroniclike live drums for a Tori Amos meets LCD Soundsystem effect.” -Tampa Bay Times
“The massive appeal of the State Of comes simply from variety” -Miami New Times

GUSTAVO RAMIREZ
www.facebook.com/pages/Gustavo-Ramirez/114359381795
I’m a 35 year old, mostly self taught visual artist (painter). I grew up in Orlando, Fl. and moved to Miami in 2001. My work mostly expresses and explores my unconscious mind in mostly automatic abstract techniques. I also like to make imagined and real portraits of people.

YAMEL MOLERIO
www.yamelmolerio.com
I was born in Havana, Cuba in 1971. I came to the U.S. in 1980 at the age of 9 during the Mariel boatlift. Since I could remember I’ve always been into art. As a kid, I remember being into drawing cartoons and even drawing anatomical posters for my mom who was a biology teacher. In high school, I started doing graffiti with my friends and it became a way of life during the late eighties. After I got into college I learned about contemporary artists, working with other media and art history. I also learned about adding concept and meaning to a work of art.
In my artwork, I deal with issues important to me by being comical at times instead of in your face political. I reject art styles or working in a specific style. I use imagery that ranges from cartoons to realistic portraiture. I want the message of the piece to be the most important thing. I want the viewer at first to be drawn to the piece and then to question why he/she was attracted to it. Maybe with a dialogue between the viewer and the artwork, the viewer will realize that popular culture has programmed us to think a certain way.

On Wednesday, August 25th from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., Miamians are invited to join celebrity wine consultant Michael Green and Wine Down co-founder Andrew Levine for Wine Down Miami at Viceroy’s Club 50 for a celebration of food, wine, and the Mediterranean lifestyle. Guests will have the opportunity to enjoy unlimited tastes of delicious and distinct wines from the Boutari portfolio and signature hors d’oeuvres from celebrity chef Michael Psilakis’ Mediterranean-inspired Eos restaurant.

“We are thrilled to be bringing our Wine Down brand to Miami,” says Wine Down co-creator Michael Green. “We’ve selected partners in Boutari Wines, Viceroy Miami, Club 50, and Eos Restaurant that will allow us to give our young professional demographic a first-class experience for a very reasonable ticket price.”

“Miami is the perfect location to showcase the refreshing summer wines of Boutari,” noted Patrick Bennett, Boutari Marketing Manager. “We are pleased that our partnership with Wine Down will allow us to celebrate great wines and the Mediterranean lifestyle.”

Wine Down is America’s premier interactive wine tasting party. Co-founded by wine celebrity Michael Green, formerly the Wine and Spirits Consultant to Gourmet Magazine, and Andrew Levine, Wine Down was created to make wine more social and accessible by marrying themed wine selections with top DJs and live bands, dramatic spaces, culinary celebrities, passed hors d’oeuvres, giveaways and more. Wine Down was twice selected by Time Out New York as one of “The Best Drinking Events in New York” and recently featured at the 2010 Food Network Atlantic City Food and Wine Festival with the Wine Down Art Show with Ted Allen and Wine Down 101: Fast Track to Wine Expertise. Wine Down will be making its international debut at The Ritz-Carlton Dubai in October 2010.

Founded in 1879 by its namesake Yiannis Boutari, the Boutari winery is the oldest family-owned winery in Greece and one of its leading producers of native Greek grape varieties like Moschofilero and Xinomavro. When Yiannis Boutari became the first winemaker to bottle and ship Xinomavro (the noble red grape of Greece), he changed the world’s perception of Greek wines by showing that Greece had the potential to deliver fine wines to the dinner tables of Europe. Greece is the Mediterranean’s most mountainous country: its “continental climate” (with warm summer days, cool summer evenings) and ancient volcanic soils are ideal for the production of world-class wines. Today, the Boutari family oversees 6 state-of-the-art wineries spanning each of the top Greek controlled-origin appellations (AOC) and produces some of the greatest expressions of Greek grape varieties, as well as modern-styled bottlings of popular French varieties like Syrah and Merlot.

Viceroy muse Kelly Wearstler has created a provocative blend of modern sophistication and exotic Asian accents for Viceroy Miami’s 162 guestrooms, suites and residences, as well as for the lobby, restaurants, lounges and event spaces. The hotel’s 15th-floor destination restaurant anchors Icon Brickell’s two-acre outdoor living room and pool terrace, while a sky-high rooftop pool bar crowns the tower. Managed by Viceroy Miami, the 28,000-square-foot full-service Spa at Icon Brickell offers ten treatment rooms, signature Viceroy wellness experiences, a 5,000-square-foot water lounge and an expansive fitness facility.

Impact at Hardcore Art Contemporary Space 8/14/10

“Impact”
August 14, 2010, 7Pm-10Pm
Hardcore Art Contemporary Space
3326 North Miami Ave,
Miami, FL 33127
www.modernforest.com

HACS proudly presents local sculptor Troy Simmons’s IMPACT, Julie L. Friel’s TAR & FEATHERED and a collaboration piece, DEAD SEA, by Julie Friel, Nicky Cassinera, Rochi Llaneza and Tita Castro.
The common thread in these exhibits is recent environmental issues.
IMPACT will cover environmental issues such as over development, reforestation, pollution, and conservation. “Impact” is a series based on the harshness of human existence and the beauty taken from nature. A relationship overcome with strife, yet yielding forgiveness by the balance for coexistence. Coveting space, in a tantalizing expression told through the eyes of a sculptor.
As stated by the artist Friel, “Tar and Feathered” “is about the tragic loss of the natural habitat of the plants, and animals in the Gulf of Mexico. This oil spill is not only about the loss of various species, but it is about the loss of a way of life for the people that inhabit these shorelines. And to me, it is the loss of a childhood journey.”
DEAD SEA is a collaborative installation addressing the current ecological issues triggered by the oil spill in the Gulf and its effect on or way of life.
Also showing though September, German-born Manuela Covini’s embroidered work.

The Exhibit is on display from July 10, 2010 through September 4,2010

Michelle Hinebrook at 101/exhibit Exhibition of New Works Kicks Off 9/11/10

Visual Artist Michelle Hinebrook Challenges Reality Through Abstraction At 101/Exhibit
Exhibition of “New Works” Kicks Off September 11, 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
101/exhibit, 101 NE 40th Street, Miami Design District.
For more information on the exhibition or 101/exhibit, call (305) 573- 2101 or visit www.101exhibit.com.

From a mixture of digital tools and traditional painting methods, Michelle Hinebrook’s work emerges as an homage to op art and geometrical abstraction, with patterns and lines guiding the eye along unfamiliar paths. Her pieces translate personal experiences and observations into imagery that causes viewers to question their own perceptions of reality. Hinebrook will bring her canvassed abstractions to 101/exhibit for an exhibition beginning Saturday, September 11, with a reception from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at which the artist will be available to discuss her art with guests. The exhibition then runs through October 6, 2010.

Hinebrook’s process is both tactile and cerebral, involving her whole body to create each unique piece. By using found objects to create lines and curves, she layers paint and color to produce what she calls a “sculptural relief,” utilizing the overlooked details of everyday items to engineer shapes into conceptual imagery.

The goal behind Hinebrook’s works is to create a physical sensation or emotional state for the viewer. She intends to cause a visceral response, and does so through her use of color and texture. Viewers are taken on a journey through the lens of microscope whose subject is never revealed, causing them to make a conjecture based on their own personal biases.

Hinebrook received her BFA from the College for Creative Studies, Detroit, MI, and her MFA in painting from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, MI. Her paintings have been internationally featured in more than 30 group exhibitions as well as numerous solo shows and art fairs, including the Marlborough Gallery and Pratt Manhattan Gallery, New York City; Helene Nyborg Gallery, Denmark; and Project Four Gallery and the Pew Foundation of the Arts, Washington, D.C. Her works have been published in The New York Times, NY Arts Magazine and the Detroit Free Press, among others, and are included in many prestigious public and corporate collections, including Daimler Chrysler Corporation, Polk Corporation and Pfizer. She is currently the Assistant Chairperson at Pratt Institute’s Graduate Communications Design program. She lives and maintains a studio, XO Projects, in Brooklyn, New York.
101/exhibit is a unique space dedicated to showcasing provocative art and, as such, will provide an ideal backdrop for Hinebrook and her work. By pushing boundaries and dissecting the predictable, the gallery is quickly gathering a strong following of fine art tastemakers and trailblazers. Owned and operated by Jerome Shaw, Sloan Schaffer and Adam Wolfson, 101/exhibit strives to provide a dynamic gathering place unrestricted by era, locale, or convention.

and a musical treat with magda!

After years of self-searching, Magda has come up with a sound that is true to her. “I write from experience. I like taking risks. I’ve loved and lost and loved again. It has always been worth it.” Her free-spirited, thought provoking outlook is reflected in the music she writes: a blend of soulful sounds and piercing lyrics with an edge. A California-born beach girl, she classifies her music as, “good for the soul.” If she were referring to the uplifting melodies that her soothing voice happily dances around, we’d say Magda’s music is, in fact, “good for the soul.” It makes you want to chill in the sun and relax all day.

Magda has been exposed to many worlds of music throughout her young age. She’s always appreciated the harmonies and head bopping sounds of alternative bands like NOFX, Nirvana and Live. She jokes, “As a tormented teen, Alanis Morissette and Fiona Apple were my best friends.” Growing up, she became fascinated with soul artists, old and new. “I really got into Etta James, Eva Cassidy, Lauryn Hill and Pink. I have definitely been inspired by the pure soul of Al Green and the individuality of Outkast too, but I’ve always particularly been taken by strong women with big voices who break from the norm and aren’t afraid to speak their minds.” Magda’s respect for artists who have something to say is deeply layered within the lines and voice of her own music.

Raised in Los Angeles, Magda has been involved in the arts from a young age. She started with musical theater in elementary school and continued acting and singing throughout her years in high school and college. She has sung the National Anthem for numerous college sporting events and has played all over Southern California, from Santa Barbara to Santa Monica to headlining her own gig at the famed House of Blues on Sunset Blvd. She now resides in Miami, Florida, where she continues to write and perform.

magda will perform from 8:00 pm until midnight!
2 for 1 starts at 9pm and ends at 11pm!
reservations for dinner are recommended.

Colors are bright when the scenes full of pathos require it, or they are watercolors when the artist prefers to give prominence to the figurative aspect; his strokes are darker when expressionist memories come back or slightly marked out when the landscape is more lyric.”

Carla Fache
“…My imagination travels to non-existing dimensions that I best describe through a process of layering. When I paint, I feel as if I am hypnotized by colors and textures, all of which will create soft, thin layers that hide or reveal a mark of an unspoken feeling, emotion, or thought…”

Eliecer Rodríguez – Recent Works
The Viernes Culturales / Cultural Fridays Gallery is opening an exhibition featuring the work of Venezuelan painter Eliecer Rodriguez this summer.
Rodriguez’s works really escapes his own limits, is a lie to say the painting is confined in inches. Without a doubt it goes beyond and cannot be contained only in a small space. The force emanating from the colors, their accents, contrast and brightness call us to a trap, and suddenly everything is dynamism, energy and passion. One thing is certain: one cannot be indifferent to his work.

“Art, painting, is a constant exercise of creation, where everything shown has become part of us. An exercise to shape what we know, we felt or what we observed of the world; what has called our attention and much more.” – Eliecer Rodriguez.

Opening reception: Wednesday July 28th, 2010 – 7:00pm

Exhibition will run until August 20th, 2010

In collaboration with Miami International Film Festival, Miami Art Museum will mark the opening of a Purvis Young focus gallery with a special screening of the 2006 documentary: Purvis of Overtown. Opening remarks will be given by César Trasobares.

Miami Art Museum will open a new exhibition in the Focus Gallery section of its Permanent Collection installation, dedicated to works by the late Purvis Young. Focus Gallery: Purvis Young (July 30 – November 7, 2010) features a selection of Young’s paintings from the museum’s permanent collection that span the career of the celebrated, self-taught Miami painter who passed away in April of this year at the age of 67.

Purvis Young’s work reflects the condition experienced by residents of Miami’s Overtown, the historic African American neighborhood that was transformed from a thriving community to an impoverished inner-city environment in the 1960’s and 70’s, when interstate 95 was erected. Against this backdrop, Young’s work serves as inspiration for the capacity of the creative spirit to reclaim, transform, restore and renew.

“Through the decades, Young served as an eyewitness to changes in social conditions and Miami’s transformation from a modest city to a bustling metropolis that now carries many of the social, economic, and political problems that come with being a large city,” said Peter Boswell, MAM assistant director for programs/senior curator. “In this context, Young’s paintings act as a form of protest against injustice and as a testament to the resiliency of the human spirit in the midst of often dehumanizing urban conditions.”

Purvis Young is often and erroneously referred to as an “Outsider” artist, a term reserved for untrained artists with no concept of art, other than their own. Contrary to the term ‘Outsider’, Young was inspired by what he saw and read of the works by Van Gogh, Rubens, Rembrandt and Cézanne from books in the public library, as well as National Geographic magazine and public television documentaries. He was introduced to art as a child by relatives who were figurative artists and cartoonists. Although he was never formally trained, Purvis Young was socially and artistically aware. Limited in the resources available to him at the time he began painting, Young used whatever materials he could find on the street, scrap lumber, parts of packing crates, and cast-off doors. He initially gained public attention over 25 years ago by hanging his paintings on the fences and exteriors of buildings on a three-block length of NW 14th St. in Overtown known as Goodbread Alley. Even after gaining fame and financial stability, most of his paintings were executed with house paint on wood that has been exposed to the elements, resulting in the extremely raw quality that his work displays. His imagery includes wild horses, marching people, railroad tracks, pregnant women and angel heads. Young has explained that they represent various life experiences and that they each symbolize a vision of hope.

Focus Gallery: Purvis Young, is an exhibition within BETWEEN HERE AND THERE: Modern and Contemporary Art from the Permanent Collection, the Museum’s Permanent Collection installation. Changing every four to six months, the Focus Gallery presents mini-exhibitions of artists or themes considered cornerstones of MAM’s collection or collecting goals.

Focus Gallery: Purvis Young is organized by Miami Art Museum and supported by donations to MAM’s Annual Exhibition Fund. It s curated by Peter Boswell, MAM assistant director for programs/senior curator.

Tickets are $35 with a portion of the proceeds to benefit the League Against Cancer (La Liga Contra el Cáncer), a not-for-profit organization that provides free medical care for all cancer patients in need, and the Simon Youth Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that helps at risk children in communities with a Simon Mall to earn a high school diploma and scholarships for college.

The celebration will continue on Sat., Oct. 2 and Sun., Oct. 3 with family-friendly activities, country exhibits, arts and flag displays and more from 12 noon to 5 p.m. each day. Together with the City of Doral, attendees will enjoy authentic folkloric music and dance performances and a high-energy fashion show featuring the latest fall looks from Miami International Mall’s most popular retailers on Sat., while on Sun., a ‘Parade of Native Dresses,’ which will showcase traditional outfits from South American, Central America and the Caribbean, will wind its way through the mall.

Impromedy Presents Get Big at the Roxy Performing Arts Center 7/30-8/20/10

Impromedy Presents Get Big at the Roxy Performing Arts Center
An all-new sketch and improv show from South Florida’s premiere comedy company
Fridays from July 30 to August 20, 2010. Doors Open 8:30 PM
$10 General Admission / $8 with Student ID

This month, Impromedy proves once and for all that bigger is better with their all-new sketch and improv comedy show Get Big at the Roxy Performing Arts Center (1645 SW 107th Ave, Miami, FL 33165).
Get Big is a unique and uproariously funny blend of original sketch (think Saturday Night Live, Mad TV) and improv (think Who’s Line is it Anyway?) comedy by South Florida’s top improv performers. So what is improv comedy? It’s comedy made up right before your very eyes. No scripts, no memorized dialogue, no rehearsed scenes: just crazy ideas, tons of energy, and your suggestions. And that means: BIG audience, BIG funny!
Watch in amazement as Impromedy players (who have trained at The Second City, Upright Citizens Brigade, and Improv Olympic) bring audience suggestions to life on stage while also giving practical diet and exercise tips, like*:
· How to use the Shake Weight™ as a powerful and effective tool for building muscle mass.
· Why tripling the FDA-recommended daily servings of red meat can actually make you leaner and stronger.
· How to take your workout clothes from daytime to date night in a pinch.

So, if you have considered ordering the 48 oz. porterhouse from Shula’s Steakhouse… Or you have ever attempted the P90X™ workout series… Or you’re just in the mood for some BIG laughs this weekend… Don’t miss Get Big!

Visit www.impromedymiami.com for a calendar of upcoming shows, cast bios, video, and more.

Viernes Culturales presents the works of Eliecer Rodriguez
Opening Night: Wednesday, July 28th 2010 7:00pm
Refreshment will be served
Viernes Culturales Art Gallery
742 SW 16th Avenue Miami, Florida 33135

The work of Venezuelan painter Eliecer Rodriguez really escapes his own limits, is a lie to say the painting is confined in inches. Without
a doubt it goes beyond and cannot be contained only in a small space. The force emanating from the colors, their accents, contrast and brightness call us to a trap, and suddenly everything is dynamism, energy and passion. One thing is certain: one cannot be indifferent to his work.

“Art, painting, is a constant exercise of creation, where everything shown has become part of us… An exercise to shape what we know, we felt or what we observed of the world; what has called our attention and much more.” Eliecer

Exhibition will run from July 28th through August 20th, 2010

Since launching in 1976, only 13 acts have taken (at least) their first four hits to number one on the Billboard charts. Following up on her three #1 Billboard hit singles–“Stars,” “Roller Coaster” and “Give You Everything”– her single “Pretty Mess” surpassed Lady Gaga on the dance charts, making Jayne a force to be reckoned with in the industry.

Jayne has worked with some of today’s most in-demand producers including Dave Aude, Tracy Young, DJ Escape & Johnny Vicious, Larry Tee, Bill Hamel, Klubjumpers, Peter Rafelson and Marshall Stack, to name a few. The Atlanta-born, Los Angeles transplant’s last batch of remixes was released in late 2009 with reworked editions of her hit single “Give You Everything” by Paul Harris, Mark Brown and Michael Woods. They shot to #2 on the Music Week Upfront Club Chart as well as #6 on the Music Week Commercial Pop Club Chart (marking the first time she ever landed on the U.K. charts) and hit #5 on Billboard’s 2009 year end Hot Dance Club Play Songs chart.

Trina Turk Swim & Spa 2011 Mercedes-Benz Swim Week post show recap

TRINA TURK KICKED OFF MERCEDES-BENZ FASHION WEEK SWIM 2011
Los Angeles-Based Designer Brought “Acapulco Gold” to Miami Beach with her Swim & Spa 2011 Collection

MIAMI, FL (July 16, 2010) – The ultimate fiesta, hosted by Los Angeles-based designer Trina Turk invited guests to celebrate her first appearance at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim 2011 with a celebration of glitz and glamour to introduce her Swim & Spa 2011 collection. On Thursday, July 15, 2010 a global mix of fashion elite observed the preview of Trina Turk’s fresh approach to swimwear and beachwear.

Trina Turk set the stage with a dynamic collection inspired by the opulence of the Mexican world-class resort. The Swim & Spa 2011 collection, “Acapulco Gold,” included a strong variation of looks that included a range of exotic influences, vibrant colors and hypnotic prints. Acapulco’s pure exotica and tropical motif was featured throughout the collection of swimwear, beach apparel and accessories.

The collection’s color palette introduced citron, fuchsia and ultraviolet. Additional highlights included gold hardware inspired by handpicked vintage jewelry in brushed links, circular-textured rings and filigree X’s. The collection’s feminine silhouettes featured one-piece keyhole bandeaus, halters with intricately-woven fabrics through gold hardware, sash hipsters and bikinis with border prints.

Matching accessories such as light-weight cover-ups ranged from chiffon caftans and modal jersey keyhole halter dresses to border-printed silk tunics and super-fine knit jersey rompers. The collection also unveiled Mr. Turk menswear, classic American resort wear styling reworked with Trina Turk’s signature prints and bold colors adorning khaki-textured cotton shirts, polos, Bermudas and tweed shorts.

Clinique and Femme Coiffure Hair Spa teamed up with Trina Turk to complement the bold and flirty “Acapulco Gold” look with sun-kissed skin and flowing beach waves. Aside from the array of bikinis, one-pieces and cover-ups, several models pulled off an ultimate accessory – oversized straw hats.

Established in 1995, Trina Turk began as a collection of contemporary clothing for women and has since successfully grown into a lifestyle brand. Today, Trina Turk designs, markets and distributes full collections of women’s apparel, swimwear, accessories and home furnishings. Trina Turk is distributed throughout the United States in fine department stores including Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales and better specialty stores throughout the country. Her own boutiques in Los Angeles, Palm Springs, Burlingame and Newport Beach, CA, East Hampton and New York, NY, and Bal Harbour Shops in Bal Harbour, FL. Men’s Swimsuit Show Ignited Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim Runway Swell Suits Miami 2011 Debuts All Male Swimwear Group Show By Betty Alvarez

The annual Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week SWIM made a big splash this year in Miami with the much-anticipated debut of Swell Suits Miami 2011 – the first all male swimwear group show to hit the runway. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week SWIM was a “by invitation only” event featuring worldwide top swimwear designers showcasing their collections in two runway venues, the Cabaña Grande and the Oasis, as well as Raleigh’s pool and penthouse.

Swell Suits Miami 2011 features the exclusive Spring/Summer swimwear collections of designers Naila, Olasul and parke & ronen. The show premiered on July 16 at 8 PM at the Oasis in the historic Raleigh Hotel in Miami Beach.

“This marks the launch of menswear getting the much-deserved attention in this all-important show,” said the producers of Swell Suits. “We are so excited to be making fashion history and believe this premiere marks a significant milestone that is greatly welcomed by the fashion community and IMG (the producers of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week SWIM).”

Men’s swimwear has come a long way in the last century. In the 1930s, men were still wearing full-body swimwear designed for modesty. Today, men’s swimwear offers versatile cuts, lengths, color and materials all designed to complement one’s physique.

This year’s featured Swell Suits Miami designers have established a design ethic with focus on detail and use of the finest materials.

Inspired by nature, Naila is oriented toward eco-friendly and innovative materials. Naila will be launching the first ever made recyclable and environmentally friendly men trunk short. Exclusively handmade in Italy, each piece in the collection features refined details, sleek silhouettes and European cuts in vibrant colorful palettes. Additional to the men line, Naila also carries an uber-chic women line and miniature version of daddy’s bathing suit.

Peruvian-born designer Lorenz Korder’s Olasul swimwear collection celebrates the unique Peruvian surf culture. Made from the highest quick-drying materials, the Olasul collection has been described as “chicly understated” with bold, funky colors. “Each piece tells a story and harkens back to a time and place where surfing was a gentleman’s sport,” Korder said.

parke & ronen – an exclusively all-male swimwear line – has grown to be a pioneer in the men’s swimwear world and a leader in the industry since 1997. The company has created a name for itself by reinventing the 50’s style men’s swim short with the creation of its signature Snap! Short. The company offers a range of styles, from knee-grazing board shorts to sexy briefs.

Randolph Engineering, as a sponsor of Swell Suits Miami will accessorize the models with their sleek lines of handcrafted premium sunglasses and shooting eyewear. Dee & Co. Hair Studio will work the backstage doing hair and makeup; owner of Dee & Co. Hair Studio and celebrity hair stylist, Dee Adames is also the winner of Bravo’s TV hit “Shear Genius” season 2.

The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari (1920, Germany, Robert Wiene, 72 minutes, b&w, DVD)—In this silent 1920s masterpiece, an insane asylum inmate explains to his psychiatrist how he came to the institution, telling the shrink the story of the evil hypnotist Caligari and his unwitting pawn, the sleepwalker Cesare. This stark expressionist film from German director Robert Wiene astonishes with the power of its sets and visuals, and the creepy plot easily raises hackles on the back of one’s neck. Prepare for explosions come Saturday, July 24, 2010, 7:00 p.m. when The Sunshine Jazz Organization presents this triple-header event featuring the acclaimed Bill Withers documentary, “Still Bill”, brought back by popular demand to The Joseph Caleb Auditorium. Withers has sung his way into the hearts of millions worldwide. His ability to say – what so many feel – is uncanny. Bill Withers is mentioned in the same breath as the greats – Stevie, Marvin, Donny – yet none sing with the directness, write with the frankness, nor compare in articulating the truth with much sparseness. He is a singer and songwriter who has topped pop charts and received awards, has been covered by Barbara Streisand and looped by Dr. Dre, and continues to influence an entire generation of artists. Honors include Soul Train, Grammy Songwriters, ASCAP Rhythm & Soul – Heritage Award, West Virginia Music and Rhythm & Blues Foundation – Pioneer Award and more. He has also received Grammy Awards for “Ain’t No Sunshine”, “Lean On Me”, and “Just The Two of Us”. The profound honesty and sensitivity found in his timeless music has made Bill Withers one of America’s premier singer/songwriters, combining soulful warmth and a genuine, folksy feel with his immediately recognizable voice.

Preceding the film will be a concert by The Kurt Wilson Band featuring Sunnie Wilson performing some of Bill Withers’ award winning hits. Following the film will be a very special appearance by Grammy-nominated Indie artist Eric Roberson touring in support of his new cd release “Music Fan First” with his song “Dealing”, featuring Lalah Hathaway.

The purpose of this event is to present an evening of live, quality music plus a legendary artist’s life story, as well as to raise awareness of the value of music and its significance in American culture. For close to a quarter of a century The Sunshine Jazz Organization has stood in the forefront of promoting this unique and precious art form for the benefit of present and future generations.

What if you woke up one summer day and discovered that the tables had been turned – that you had shrunk to the size of an ant, and towering above you were a giant spider, an enormous praying mantis, and a huge, snapping Venus flytrap? No, it is not another sequel to “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.”

It is the Florida premiere of Sarruga, Barcelona’s famed street theater group. Spectacular giant insects will cavort in an indoor show filled with music, lights and movement. The City of Miami Beach’s acclaimed Arts in the Parks series moves into the Miami Beach Convention Center for Sarruga’s spectacular “Insects.” This unique, not-to-be-missed entertainment will be held July 22 – 25 in Hall B. The family event is free.

“We’re so excited,” said Max Sklar, Miami Beach’s director of Tourism and Cultural Development. “We had hoped to bring Sarruga for the first Sleepless Night. When we heard they were coming to perform in Chicago’s Millennium Park this summer, we jumped on the chance to present them to the people of South Florida.”

“Insects” is made possible by the City of Miami Beach Department of Tourism and Cultural Development and Arts in the Parks, with Centro Cultural Español, the Bass Museum of Art, and the Catalina Hotel and Beach Club.

Horario:

Sábado, 24 de julio, 3:00 p.m.: Interpretación
