Gina Pellón Exhibition Opens At Cernuda Arte 11/5/10

Cernuda Arte is pleased and honored to announce the opening of Still Going Strong, a solo exhibition that brings together fifty recent works by renowned contemporary Cuban master, Gina Pellón. This new exhibition inaugurates on Friday, November 5, with a celebratory Opening Reception from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m.
The artist will be traveling from Paris to Miami to attend the evening premiere. This is a welcomed opportunity for visitors to view a great show and meet the artist. The event is free and open to the public. The exhibition will run through December 15, 2010.

As an endeared, respected and applauded artist from the Cuban diaspora in the international milieu, Gina Pellón has enjoyed a successful career and many accolades, including the bestowal of one of France’s most distinguished titles, that of Chevalier in the French Order of Arts and Letters – an award that recognizes the eminency of artists and writers who have contributed significantly to furthering the arts in France and throughout the world.

She has also received praiseworthy comments and critiques for her outstanding qualities as an artist by renowned writers and art celebrities, such as, Wifredo Lam, Roberto Matta, Asger Jorn, José Pierre, Michele Anthonioz, Édouard Jaguer, Édouard Glissant, Alain Bosque and José Gómez Sicre, to name a few.

All these laudable recognitions throughout the years are the result of an exemplary-productive life of an established artist who has always focused on translating authenticity, audacity and beauty in a unique body of work.

Her Paris home-studio, for 51 years, is her sacred shelter and retreat. Aglow with harmony, an organized atmosphere permeates Gina’s dwelling, graciously filled with books, magazines, music, paintings, drawings, sculptures, art objects, treasured Cuban collectibles and many, many memories –all vital and seasoned companions of a life well chosen. It is ultimately a self-ruling space, where the artist lives and concocts a significant-ongoing endeavor.

Dynamic and luminous, Gina Pellón’s work is based on bold colors, vigorous brushwork and gestural rhythm. Prismatic figures of women, visages – and at times – groups and gatherings of people, stream in her compositions conveying spontaneity at its best. As a dominant element in this late-period rendition, one senses a marvelous kind of freshness –particularly in the way the artist multi-layers the colors and lets loose the free-flowing lines that so exquisitely create her iconography.

Passionate and persevering, Gina exalts that familiar state of grace and joie-de-vivre adherent to her persona for so many years. And this time around, still fully in command of her talents – and with much to say at 84 years of age – the painter once again delivers a telling show with superb examples of her work.

As gallery director, Ramón Cernuda, says in his Still Going Strong catalog salute to the artist, […] Gina arrives at her late style of painting full of energy and enthusiasm. Her creations are freer and seem more spontaneous. The contours of her figures no longer contain, they merely suggest. The expressionism of the unbridled brushwork is loose of formality and devoid of restriction. The palette contributes color fields that clash and make peace –inevitable destiny of neighbors… What an honor to celebrate this exhibition. The festivity is surely merited. We recognize a lifetime of dedication to art. Much deserved.

Standouts of this exhibition include, Moonlight, an imposing large-format canvas that fuses together an energetic atmosphere and a suffused affection for the figures portrayed, and The Praying Mantis, an arresting depiction of a seated woman wearing an intense-red color jacket, a favorite hue in the artist’s palette.

GINA PELLÓN was born in Cumanayagua, Cuba, on the year 1926. At the beginning, she attended the San Alejandro Academy in Havana, Cuba where she received a solid-six-year formative training which later on helped her become a knowledgeable and confident artist. Her resolute spirit to stay on the pulse and a no-fear personality takes her to France. A born-again person in 1959 (the definitive year when Gina left the island with another group of Cuban artists and arrived in Paris), she immediately fell in love with the city and decided to stay permanently.

Paris offered the young artist, a vibrant atmosphere, a bountiful cultural life and a different group of friends. From this moment on, and despite the obvious difficulties of adaptation while living in exile, she pursued her long-standing desire to become a professional artist and worked on it hard. She expanded her horizons, mingled with personalities such as André Breton, Matta, Lam, Asger Jorn, and learned about the popular art movements of the times.

Gina was once asked in an interview about the artists that had a greater influence on her. She mentioned Kandinsky, Paul Klee and Picasso, but also included with familiarity, the experimental group linked to action painting, the surrealists, and after this, the definite contact in the ‘60s with the spontaneity and total freedom of expression conceived by the avant-garde COBRA movement in Europe. This important discovery touched and transformed Gina’s artwork. In the years that followed, she faced the empty canvas in a different way and defined the signature alchemy that has captivated, for many years, art enthusiasts and art collectors worldwide.

Gina Pellón has been featured in more than fifty solo exhibitions and included in more than 100 group shows. Her career in Europe has been prolific and successful, with extensive exhibitions in Paris, Lausanne, Toulouse, Brussels, Amsterdam, Silkeborg, Copenhagen and Larvik.

She has also shown internationally in major museums, institutions and art fairs in other cities such as, Geneva, Barcelona, London, Miami, New York and Caracas, among others. Her work is held in the permanent collections of many distinguished private, public and corporate art collections around the world. Gina Pellón resides and works in Paris, France.

The exhibition is accompanied by a fully-illustrated catalog. Forty-nine artworks from Still Going Strong are featured in color. It also includes an essay by professor, art historian, curator, writer and Latin American & Caribbean art specialist, Dr. Carol Damian. She is the Director of the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum at Florida International University, and teaches Art History in this same university. Also included are special words of recognition by curator and gallery director, Ramón Cernuda, in the context of this great accomplishment by the artist.

Coral Gables Museum and Green Mobility Network present the Seersucker Social Bicycle Tour 10/16/10

Coral Gables Museum and Green Mobility Network present the Seersucker Social Bicycle Tour
Saturday, October 16 at 10:30am
University Metrorail Station on Ponce de Leon Boulevard

The Coral Gables Tweed Ride this past winter featured over 100 riders on a variety of bikes who pedaled through the City Beautiful donning vintage attire. Next month, the Coral Gables Museum and the Green Mobility Network are teaming up to present a biking event fashioned for South Florida’s warm, early autumn weather.

The Seersucker Social, on Saturday, October 16, will offer another enjoyable and relaxing biking experience by encouraging participants to tour the Gables in their best seersucker ensemble. According to Wikipedia, seersucker was originally worn by the poor in the U.S. until undergraduate students, in an air of reverse snobbery, began to wear the fabric. Damon Runyon wrote that his new habit for wearing seersucker was “causing much confusion among my friends. They cannot decide whether I am broke or just setting a new vogue.” Let’s opt for the latter!

Participants will gather at the University Metrorail Station on Ponce de Leon Boulevard at 10:30am and bicycle through the Gables, with a stop and tour at the Coral Gables Museum, and then pedal on to the historic Coral Gables Merrick House at 907 Coral Way for a picnic, badminton and croquet. The catered lunch featuring fabulous food from the Green Gables Café is $14 per person. You can still join in the fun and ride without purchasing the picnic lunch.

For more details, and to purchase/reserve your picnic lunch, please visit coralgablesmuseum.org/seersuckersocial.php or greenmobilitynetwork.org.

Green Mobility Network is an education and advocacy group that promotes walking, running and bicycling as necessary elements of a healthy and desirable community.

The Coral Gables Museum’s mission is to celebrate, investigate and explore all aspects of architecture, landscape architecture, design and urban planning as well as historic and environmental preservation, set within the context of one of America’s first and most successful planned communities – the City of Coral Gables.

Coral Gables Art Cinema Opens
South Florida’s New State-of-the-Art
Non-Profit Movie Theater
October 15 Special Premiere Event With Freakonomics

South Florida’s art house film scene is getting a shot in the arm with the October 15 launch of the new Coral Gables Art Cinema. With the most advanced technical set-up of any stand-alone non-profit movie theater in the region, 144 stadium configured seats, and a truly comfortable but intimate space in the upscale Gables, the Cinema is positioned to become an important destination for film-lovers in Greater Miami and beyond. Long-time film industry leader Steven Krams is the Founder and President of the Coral Gables Cinemateque, Inc., the non-profit that runs the Cinema, which was developed in partnership with the City of Coral Gables, Magna-Tech Electronic Co. and the Coral Gables Community Foundation.

The first film at the Coral Gables Art Cinema will be the Florida premiere of Freakonomics, the funny and insightful feature based on the bestselling book of the same name that explores “the hidden side of everything.” On Friday, October 15, there will be a special opening fundraising event for the Cinema, with screenings of the film at 7:00 pm and 10:00 pm and a reception at 9:00 pm that those with tickets for either show can attend. Tickets for these screenings cost $100 and can be purchased in advance on the Cinema’s website www.coralgablescinemateque.org or by phone at (786) 385-9689.

Freakonomics will play for two full weeks with regularly priced screenings under $10, varying for adults, students, seniors, children and members. For a full schedule and ticket purchase options, plus news on upcoming film programs, check movie listings, or visit the Cinema’s website or call them for more information. Annual memberships are available that provide a range of discounts and benefits, and help support the Cinema.

The highly anticipated Freakonomics examines human behavior with provocative and sometimes hilarious case studies, bringing together a dream team of filmmakers responsible for some of the most acclaimed and entertaining documentaries in recent years, including Academy Award® winner Alex Gibney (Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, Casino Jack and the United States of Money), Academy Award® nominees Rachel Grady and Heidi Ewing (Jesus Camp), Academy Award® nominee Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me), Eugene Jarecki (Why We Fight) and Seth Gordon (The King of Kong). In the movie, like the bestselling book Freakonomics by Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner on which it is based, the filmmakers apply a surprising, economics-based analysis to the problems of every day life. The film, which closed the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival, is just opening in theaters in October and will be making its Florida premiere at the Coral Gables Art Cinema.

The Coral Gables Art Cinema is a state-of-the-art theater and arts center that includes 35mm, 16mm (for archival prints) and pristine 2k/4k true industry-standard theatrical quality digital projection, Dolby digital sound, an onsite gallery, gourmet café and covered outdoor patio seating. It is fully wheelchair accessible with available assistive listening devices. The Cinema is also equipped for live presentations and performances, and includes parking in a covered garage.

“We will be showcasing the best first-run American independent and international features, both fiction and documentaries, in addition to repertory films, special programs and film festival events, which vividly speak to the multilingual and multicultural diversity of South Florida,” says Robert Rosenberg, the Cinema’s Director. “In addition to film screenings, the Cinema will be a cultural hub for filmmakers, other artists and the public, with live performances, great food and drinks, sidebar events and educational activities.” Rosenberg, an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker, and a respected film festival curator and arts consultant, was recently brought on to develop the Cinema’s programming and community profile. Upcoming films at the Cinema this fall include Florida Premiere and First Run Presentations of international films from Peru, Israel, France and Nicaragua as well as more U.S. titles; films with stars such as James Franco, Mary-Louise Parker, Colombian heart-throb Manolo Cardona and Isabelle Huppert; and award-winning directors such as Gasper Noé, D.A. Pennebaker, Claire Denis and Rob Epstein.

The Coral Gables Art Cinema was conceived of in 2006 as a new movie theater to serve the South Florida region. The City of Coral Gables owns the building and the theater is operated by the Coral Gables Cinemateque, Inc., a non-profit film arts organization, under a long-term favorable lease. Gables Mayor Don Slesnick has also been instrumental in helping create the Cinema. “So many individuals and groups have come together to make the Cinema possible,” says President Steven Krams. “We truly believe that a venue such as this will serve the South Florida region for years to come.” The Cinema’s Board of Directors is made up of Carmen Argamasilla, Midge Blumberg-Krams, Patrick de Bokay, Daniel Gelber, Howard Glicken, Mitchell Kaplan, Steven Krams, Marshall Pasternack and Cathy Swanson-Riverbank.

Funding for the Coral Gables Art Cinema comes in part from the City of Coral Gables; the Perrin Fund of the Coral Gables Community Foundation; Steven and Myrna-Blumberg Krams; Bacardi; the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Mayor and Board of County Commissioners; and the many individual donors and members who have joined to make the Cinema a reality. Major in-kind contributions of professional movie theater equipment, furnishings, fixtures and installations have been contributed by a range of film industry companies have been key to outfitting the theater.

‘We should all rejoice in the wonderful and important work found in Tigertail, a South Florida Poetry Annual.’ – Mitchell Kaplan

Flora Fong and Li Domínguez Fong
The Mother, The Son: Two Artists, One Passion

There are only a few days left so see this excellent bi-personal exhibition that has attracted over 600 visitors. The show features over forty works rendered by both artists and will be on view through October 20.

Longtime writer, editor and art critic for the Miami Herald since 1980, FABIOLA SANTIAGO interviewed the artists the day after their successful Opening Night, and commented in her insightful review…
“Mother-and-son Cuban artists Flora Fong and Li Domínguez Fong have traveled to South Florida
from their home in Havana for a joint exhibition of their works, The Mother, The Son: Two Artists,
One Passion, at Coral Gables’ Cernuda Arte.
[…] Fong’s paintings and sculptures are charged with the tropical vigor of the Cuban countryside
and framed by symbols of her Chinese ancestry. Domínguez’s angst-laden works are enigmatic
landscapes in textured grays, black and white. Broken or incomplete bridges and stairwells –
and people – populate his art.
[..] Sunflowers, palm trees, red fish, a cafecito cup, the smoke of a cigar and the sea are primary
elements in the paintings she creates in her studio… A painting of a tropical island-like mountain
is anchored by the Chinese character for forest.
[…]On the other hand, Domínguez, who is exhibiting work created during the last eight years, has a more critical view of life. His peasants and fishermen seem sad, pensive, and as in the striking, A la espera (In the Waiting), disillusioned. The stairwell doesn’t seem to lead anywhere. The bridge becomes something else, something elusive. […] Every painting has a phantasmagoric quality.”
(Excerpt: Fabiola Santiago, Artistic Journey, September 5, 2010, The Miami Herald, p.1B)

Carefully trained studio facilitators (“trackers”) act as neutral arms, executing the visions of the physically challenged through laser-guided tracking, a regimented line of questions, and other exacting technologies. The artists indicate their choices about what tools, materials, and textures to use and the placement of these on the canvas. The most subtle movements such as a blink or a nod that the tracker can read are all that is required, and the possibilities are endless. The trackers’ job is to follow the artist’s directions with absolute fidelity. This enabling system gives uncompromised creative self-expression to youth with the most severe physical challenges. Artists paint once weekly, free of charge, with a tracker at the CCT studio. Several times through out the year, artists congregate to work with professional artists critiquing pieces, interacting and questioning, gaining knowledge and refining their craftsmanship. The artwork produced is mainstreamed and exhibited alongside the work of other community artists. Pieces are not admired for the artist’s disability, rather, for the quality and depth of their work. Many are spectacular museum quality pieces. CCT-ART increases self-esteem and empowers the spirit. It provides a method of financial gain for the artists who exhibit and sell their work. Fifty percent of the proceeds from the sale of the art go directly to the artist and fifty percent goes to the cost of the program, for the employment of the TRACKER, supplies, materials and facility space. The power of ART is unleashed and the artists’ lives are enriched.

CCT’s vision is clear: providing children and their families the best opportunity to live fully and to lead healthy, active and independent lives enriched with quality, confidence and compassion. What differs is the approach we use to deliver these therapies. We strive to be able to offer the same quality opportunity to all our patients regardless of their economic status.

CCT/A.R.T. presents INSPIRED BY THE BEAT Please join us as we celebrate our 21 special artists and as they honor special guest artist “LEBO” with an evening full of art, music, entertainment, free valet parking, food and drinks.
$20 presale or $30 at the door. ALL proceeds are a donation to the A.R.T. program at CCT, a 501(c)(3) non profit dedicated to the lives of special need children!

“The reason I made the book?,” the Caldecott Honor winning Lane Smith asks on his blog. “Certainly not to “throw down the gauntlet” as one critic has stated. Naw, I just thought digital vs. traditional made for a funny premise. No heavy message, I’m only in it for the laffs. [sic]”

It’s a video! Check out this cool video for It’s a Book…

This is one of just a very few appearances he’s making for It’s a Book. So, it’s a real treat!

Flora Fong and Li Dominguez Fong A Bi-Personal Exhibition Opening At Cernuda Arte 9/3/10

FLORA FONG & LI DOMÍNGUEZ FONG
THE MOTHER, THE SON: TWO ARTISTS, ONE PASSION
A BI-PERSONAL EXHIBITION OPENING
September 3, 7:00 to 10:00 p.m.
Cernuda Arte
3155 Ponce de Leon Blvd., Coral Gables, FL 33134
www.cernudaarte.com

The Mother, The Son: Two Artists, One Passion features the first bi-personal mother and son art exhibition in the U.S. of contemporary Cuban artists, Flora Fong and Li Domínguez Fong. The show will inaugurate at Cernuda Arte on First Friday, September 3, with an Opening Reception from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m.

Flora Fong and Li Domínguez Fong have traveled from Havana to the United States and will be present at the opening reception. Visitors attending the evening opening will have the opportunity to see this impressive gathering and meet the artists. The event is free and open to the public. The exhibition will be on view through October 20.

Showing together and sharing walls for the first time in a dual presentation, this display includes over forty paintings rendered by both artists. Also featured in the exhibition are six exquisite one-of-a-kind bronze sculptures executed by Flora Fong that reflect the realm of the artist’s iconography.

Juxtaposing the work of Flora and Li, one can see how they create their own yin and yang renditions of luminosity and darkness, vivacity and stillness, clarity and blurriness… The mother and son relationship has sound foundations of unity, and harmony, yet, their artistic manifestos unfurl different paths and scenarios. Mother and son can never be confused with each other. While both share a common ancestry and a passion for art, their work reveals a marked contrast of styles and subject matters.

Often delving into imagery deeply rooted in her Caribbean surroundings and Chinese ancestry, Flora Fong’s work is brilliantly colored with sun-filled compositions. The tropical birds and fishes, the fruits, sunflowers, palm trees, and banana trees, the wind and the rain are Flora’s everyday-life companions. The canvases and bronzes featured bring to view her masterful way of orchestrating the elements in a composition with forceful energy and originality. The artist’s quest to integrate and renew influences, granted by her island’s environment and those belonging to the millenary-eastern culture she has inherited, is clearly transposed in this showcase of her recent work.

Through intricate multi-layered images and textured surfaces that at times mutate or dissolve into abstraction, Li Domínguez Fong creates mixed media works that require participation from the viewer. In each of these, an atmosphere of solitude and abandonment haunts the composition. Scenes of alienated and adrift people abound… a sense of anonymity and melancholy prevails. Lost boats, hopeless journeys and staircases to nowhere are recurrent themes… the broken bridge, a frequent metaphor. The viewer is left with images to behold, not to decipher. And in many ways, this enigmatic language and play makes Li’s compositions fascinating. An in-depth look at his body of work reveals a gifted young artist who has been handed a legacy of creative skills and is decidedly in the process of leaving his mark.

Two standouts included in the exhibition are Flora Fong’s striking canvas, Siéntase en Cuba, (FEEL YOURSELF IN CUBA), (2010) and Li Domínguez Fong’s mesmerizing work, A la Espera, (IN THE WAITING), (2010).

Flora Fong (Camagüey, Cuba, 1949) is widely admired and recognized as one of Cuba’s foremost contemporary artists. She graduated from the National School of Art in Havana in 1970 and worked as an art professor at San Alejandro Art Academy until 1989. She has had an extraordinary career in the field of plastic arts with various one-person shows and participations in multiple group exhibitions. She has garnered several prestigious awards and acknowledgments throughout her life. Her works are included in numerous public and private collections around the world. The artist lives and works in Havana, Cuba.

Li Domínguez Fong (Havana, Cuba, 1978), graduated from the Escuela Elemental de Artes Plásticas in Havana. He continued his studies at the San Alejandro Art Academy where he graduated in 1991. He has had three one-person shows in Havana, and has participated in several fine art salons, festivals, contests and group exhibitions in Cuba, Europe, Latin America, Asia and the United States. The artist lives and works in Havana, Cuba.

Accompanying the exhibition is a full-color 36-page catalogue with an essay in English and Spanish by renowned Cuban professor, researcher and art critic, Yolanda Wood.

Poetry Reading by Ricardo Pau-Llosa and Humberto Castro Exhibition 9/2/10

A reading of new poems by Ricardo Pau-Llosa, one of Miami’s leading cultural figures, at ArtSpace/Virginia Miller Galleries in downtown Coral Gables, presently exhibiting “Traces of Migrations” by Humberto Castro.
7:00 pm, Thursday, September 2, 2010
ArtSpace/Virginia Miller Galleries
169 Madeira Avenue
Coral Gables, FL 33134

The reading will be in English. A reception will be held afterwards for Ricardo Pau-Llosa and Humberto Castro.

Ricardo Pau-Llosa, a major figure on the South Florida literary and visual arts scene, has been publishing poetry and art criticism for 36 years. His original model of art criticism has helped shape our view of modern Latin American painting and sculpture.

His ideas about what sets Latin American art apart from other modernist traditions, together with his poetry and prodigious art collecting, is the focus of a monumental tribute at the Snite Museum of Art at the University of Notre Dame this fall. The exhibition, accompanied by a major book, is titled Parallel Currents: Highlights of the Ricardo Pau-Llosa Collection of Latin American Art (Aug 29-Nov 14). Among the artists Pau-Llosa has published important essays on are Olga de Amaral, Fernando de Szyszlo, Rogelio Polesello, Jesús Soto, Hugo Consuegra, and Humberto Castro, whose work is on exhibition here tonight.

Pau-Llosa’s poems have appeared in practically all the major literary magazines of the United States, as well as major magazines in the United Kingdom and Canada. He has published six books of poems, the last four with Carnegie Mellon University Press. His latest collection is titled Parable Hunter (2008). His poems have always employed rich figurative language to convey complex ideas and vivid images and settings. His narrative poems function as allegories as well as convey moving insights into the creative process, exile, historical events, and others subjects he has brought to life in his work.

Tonight, Pau-Llosa will be reading from poems he has published since the appearance of his last collection. Some, from his “Man” series draw on events in both the Hebrew and Christian scriptures to render a portrait of a complex, secular individual whose actions, feelings, and thoughts reverberate, even if unbeknownst to him, with religious contexts. Other poems draw on paintings for inspiration, and still others evoke philosophical ideas which have shaped the work and life of this truly distinctive and ground-breaking poet and thinker.

Cremata Gallery Annual Summer Exhibition Opening reception 6/11/10

Cremata Gallery’s “Annual Summer Exhibition”
Opening reception : June 11 – 7:30 pm – 10 pm
Cremata Gallery. 1646 SW 8th Street. Miami, FL 33135
From June 1 through June 30, 2010
Regular hours: Tuesday – Saturday, 12:00 – 6:00 pm and Mondays by appointment
Admission: Free

Cremata Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of their “Annual Summer Exhibition” featuring various artists from the gallery roster.
Some artists have been with the gallery since its inception, and others have joined us recently, like Enrique Toledo. The exhibition comprises 40 works including paintings, drawings and sculptures. This exposition does not attempt to follow a rigorous chronological or thematic order; instead, it prefers to emphasize an eclectic selection.
The exhibition includes the works of established masters, as well as mi-career and upcoming artists with a promising future. The result is something uniquely eclectic and entirely contrary to delimited chronologies and rigorous themes. The joy of the “Annual Summer Exhibition” always comes more from unexpected juxtapositions, not from the pairing of like with like, allowing the eye and imagination a rare freedom, not telling you what you ought to admire or notice.

On this occasion, Cremata Gallery will feature Cuban artist Enrique Toledo (Santa Clara, 1966), who inaugurates his first exhibition in Miami. Toledo, who has magnificent technical skill, has developed a prolific pictorial portfolio based on famous works in the history of art, which he then recontextualizes in the present adding everyday elements to them. To view his oeuvre, is to make a ludic journey through the paintings of Lucas Cranach, Hans Holbein, Rafael Sanzio, among other masters. The personages in his paintings radiate an enigmatic magnetism, inviting the spectator to penetrate the work beyond mere contemplation. Enrique Toledo boasts a productive career with more than 40 expositions in his native Cuba, Mexico, Portugal and the United States.

Title explores Cuban mindset and its relevancy for the nation’s future, providing creative solutions for a successful transition to democracy

Miami-based author, scholar and businessman Dr. José Azel will host a launch event for his new book Mañana in Cuba at Books & Books in Coral Gables on Wednesday, June 2, 2010. In this title, Dr. Azel offers a comprehensive analysis of contemporary Cuba with an incisive perspective of the Cuban mindset and its implications for Cuba’s future. Mañana in Cuba’s release is particularly timely given the topical nature of Cuba and U.S. relations today.

While the official event begins at 8:00 p.m., guests are invited to attend a pre-reception celebration at 7:00 p.m. in the bookstore’s Mediterranean-style courtyard, with small plates and wines courtesy of The Café at Books & Books. Immediately following the outdoor soirée, Dr. Azel will discuss concepts from Mañana in Cuba. A question and answer period will follow, during which time Dr. Azel will autograph copies of his book.

Divided into two parts, Mañana in Cuba begins with the exploration of the mindset Cubans have developed living under a totalitarian system. Here, Dr. Azel explores the historic, political and economic obstacles present in modern-day Cuba and introduces the framework he believes will most effectively facilitate a democratic civil society. Part two of Mañana in Cuba discusses practical policies to work with the current disposition of the Cuban nation and lead it to a prosperous future, while maintaining the society’s culture and history.

According to Dr. Azel, “A unique aspect of this book lies in the fact that it does not seek to unnaturally mend a decimated civil society, but rather, it offers policy approaches anchored on current Cuban ethos and society.” Mañana in Cuba focuses on the means that will facilitate the Cuban transition from totalitarianism and a centrally planned economy to liberal democracy and a free-market economic system. Ultimately, Dr. Azel asserts that the alternative visions presented for Cuba’s future should be met with immense consideration as one of them will inevitably crystallize into the sociopolitical and economic narrative of the country for generations to come.

Notably, 100 percent of the author proceeds from sales of Mañana in Cuba will benefit the Institute for Cuban and Cuban-America Studies at the University of Miami, where Dr. Azel is a Senior Scholar. For more information on Mañana in Cuba and its author, please visit the book’s publisher, Author House.

Local Impact, a Miami-based non-profit 501(c) 3, developed their first three-month music therapy pilot program this January, to benefit theEaster Seals South Florida Memory Gym. The weekly, one hour music session was not your typical “therapy program.” During the music session it was not surprising to see Alzheimer’s patients stomping their feet, dancing and playing with instruments to punk rock, reggae, hip hop and deep soul. The exhibition is based upon the connection of these two uncommon worlds and the creation and feelings it brought. There really were no rules of what type of music was brought but instead a push to expose and connect two different worlds for the first time. Top Miami-based talent such as Locos Por Juana, Arboles Libres, Omine Eager, AT Molina, Vincent Raffard, The State Of, Ketchy Shuby, Jan Sebon, Jose Elias, Elsten Torres, Xperimento, Bayonics and Michelle Forman donated one hour of their time every Tuesday at the Easter Seals of South Florida Memory Gym.

The entire program was documented through photography and video created by local photographers and filmmakers. The exhibit will take place Thursday, May 20th 2010 at the Miami Science Museum along with Live Music from some of the bands involved in the program. The night will also include a silent auction with 50% of all proceeds going to Local Impact and 50% to the Easter Seals South Florida.

For a short video clip of the music therapy session go to: http://vimeo.com/10362971

The program was developed by sisters Tanya and Natasha Bravo. Tanya Bravo has a strong background in the entertainment and music field while her sister Natasha Bravo is an occupational therapist. The sisters thought it was important to bring both these communities together and found the perfect opportunity through Local Impact.

The sisters also share a close tie with Easter Seals South Florida. Their father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s twelve years ago and is currently a patient at Easter Seals South Florida.

“It makes us so proud to see the out pouring support from the Local Music community to support local health organizations in need of programming. The photography and videos really capture the magic moments between these two groups and it is evident how much both these communities can benefit from one another” “said Tanya Bravo, co-founder of Local Impact.

As many as 5.3 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s destroys brain cells, causing memory loss and problems with thinking and behavior severe enough to affect work, lifelong hobbies or social life. Alzheimer’s gets worse over time and it is fatal. Today, it is the seventh-leading cause of death in the United States. People with Alzheimer’s may exhibit different states of behavior like apathy, anxiety, confusion. Music and its tempo can draw a person in and affect their behavior, feelings, memory, and provoke movement and the beats per minute can affect how brainwaves function.

About Local Impact
Local Impact’s goal is to create a seamless tie between the South Florida art community (musicians, artists, photographers, actors, writers, film makers) and social health and community-based organizations that are in need of programming. We hope to educate our local artists about health, social and environmental issues in our community and how their talents can be used to heal and expand people and issues in need.

WHO IS MIRANDA?
The creator of Miranda is a classically trained singer and actress named Colleen Ballinger. Her character is a satire of common YouTube videos featuring mediocre or even bad singers who film themselves singing as a form of self-promotion. Miranda sings comically off-key,
and, when confronted by viewers who take the videos seriously, uses the catchphrase “Haters back off!”. Ms. Ballinger’s character has enjoyed widespread popularity, particularly among musical theatre fans, and has recently appeared as Miranda Sings at live club and theater venues in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Salt Lake City, London, and Australia. Special guests have included the casts of Mamma Mia, Billy Elliott, Bye Bye Birdie, Rock of Ages, Jersey Boys, Shrek, Ann Hampton Callaway, Shoshana Bean, Daniel Reichard, Seth Rudetsky, Christopher Sieber, and Scott Alan.

EXHIBITION: Antonia Wright & Ruben Millares / “A Great Disorder is An Order”
CLOSING RECEPTION: Saturday, April 24th, 7-9pm
For more information please call 305.444.0333

777 Studio Gallery in Coral Gables is pleased to announce the upcoming public exhibition of artwork by two Miami-based talents, Antonia Wright and Ruben Millares. The exhibition is centered on the exploration of the human experience in the built and natural worlds; our relationship to our surroundings and to each other. Wright will present a series of photographs, On the Other Hand, video, and installation and Millares will present a multisensory installation of mobile sculptures and ink drawings for the exhibition. The closing reception with the artists is on Saturday, April 24th, 2010 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

In the series On the Other Hand, Antonia Wright repeats the same neutral gesture, a hand reaching, and places it in different contexts. The expression becomes a communication to the viewer, a metaphor begging for a reading into the deeper meaning of the act. The hand reaches out of the ocean on a rainy day, a pile of garbage, a field of ducks. Is the hand an invitation? A threatening gesture? Does the figure in the photo need help? Do we? Or both? These photos, mini poems on humanity, aim to highlight the ‘bizarre’ within the everyday façade of normal situations. This series, like all of Wright’s work, looks into our interpersonal connections to our surroundings, both to the natural and to each other, and explores our relationship to both.

Ruben Millares’ work speaks to the balance between man and nature. This series of mobiles physically focuses on the idea of equilibrium. Millares says, by using personal metal hangers, consumed shell fish and leftover construction materials that would otherwise be discarded, I bring human excess back to productive means. The mobiles move in concentric circular patterns at the mercy of the wind or water creating new and recycled energy from waste. Millares approaches ink drawings from an emotional stand point, letting the ink and water guide his internal feelings onto the paper. By using different tools, he is able to create ever changing textures within a traditional medium. The drawings, like the mobiles are impermanent even though they are fixed on a piece of paper. In this exhibit the artist presents mobiles and drawings together in a multisensory environment that is foreign yet known.
By presenting man-made materials in harmony with natural ones, we begin to see how man tries to create the beauty inherent in the natural world. Can it be done? Can we surpass the natural? Or is it the balance that is ultimately more important?

Pecha Kucha Gardenovation at Fairchild 4/25/10

For the first time, Pecha Kucha—an event for designers and innovators to meet, network, and show their work in public—joins Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden’s Food and Garden Festival Sunday, April 25th at 1PM. The panel titled GARDENOVATION: Returning to Your Nature showcases seven of South Florida’s nature inspired artists, designers, and architects who creatively challenge traditional ideas about garden design, technique, and interaction with nature. With 20 Power Point slides shown for 20 seconds each, the panelist will share how nature has inspired them in their work and in return allowed them to learn about their own nature in the process.

About Pecha Kucha
Pecha Kucha was conceived in Tokyo in February 2003 by architects Mark Dytham and Astrid Klein as an event where young designers could meet, network and show their work in public. Over time, it has evolved into a massive celebration of creativity, with events regularly being held in 300 cities including Miami. Last year, more than 6,000 presentations were hosted at over 600 Pecha Kucha events. Drawing its name from the Japanese phrase for the sound of conversation (“chit chat”), the Pecha Kucha format is simple—20 images x 20 seconds—and designed to keep presentations concise and moving at a rapid pace. For more information, visit www.pecha-kucha.org/cities/miami

Wright will present a series of photographs, On the Other Hand, video, and installation and Millares will present a multisensory installation of mobile sculptures and ink drawings for the exhibition which premieres with an opening reception with the artists on Saturday, March 20th, 2010 from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

This two-hour social experience promises to be the perfect way to kick off your Saturday night, laugh with your friends as you model some of the latest designer frames, meet other singles in your area and perhaps secure yourself a dinner date!
And if you don’t find your ideal match in a mate, you may certainly leave with your perfect frames!

A true artist, Beiner believes that the confidence that comes with being equipped with the right frames is unparalleled. “What we offer is disappearing,” say Beiner. “If you’re able to create the best products with love and care, the message gets through”.

Melt One Community One Play at the Miracle Theatre 2/10-28/10

A must for all cultural arts enthusiasts!

The Leadership Miami Alumni Group selects a community service project each year for “incubation” which is designed to sustain the project and continue its introduction into the community. This year they have selected the community service project “Diversity through the Arts.”

Set against the backdrop of a growing skyline, diminishing affordable housing and the necessary interaction of Miami’s different cultures, Melt tells the story of an African American brother and sister, a Jewish father and son and a Hispanic mother and her son who find their lives intertwining over social and moral issues as seen from the perspective of each culture. The Leadership Miami Alumni Group believes that the “incubation” of this project in a ‘ONE COMMUNITY, ONE PLAY’ event will have a positive impact on the nature of the ongoing community discussion about the diversity of our population.

With today’s economic situation, we are seeing more stress on our community and it is even more important now than ever that we address the problem by easing the tension and bringing our community together in new and artistic ways. The Group will fundraise to donate to the community approximately half of the tickets (2,000) to various relevant groups, such as, community based and civic organizations, high school students, academicians, clergy and members of local fire and police departments to truly make it a ‘ONE COMMUNITY, ONE PLAY’ event. Talkbacks with community leaders about the experiences garnered during and after the play are an essential part of the project and will take place both on stage and via social media.

In order for The Leadership Miami Alumni Group to make this worthwhile project possible we will need our community’s support. If you or you know of someone who would like to get involved either through volunteer efforts, audience development, marketing, or fundraising please let me know.

Tickets can be purchased at www.actorsplayhouse.org and all money raised goes to the South Florida Progress Foundation, a not-for-profit charitable organization 501(c)3.

Please join our Facebook page and contribute to the ongoing discussion about the Play by visiting this link http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?ref=profile&id=5307448#/pages/MELT-One-CommunityOne-Play/211927847720?ref=mf

Brooks Reid Band performs Live at Smoke’t Southern Kitchen and Tap A Neighborhood BBQ Joint 1/16/10

SMOKE’T SOUTHERN KITCHEN & TAP SETS MIAMI ABLAZE

Sophisticated Spin on Classic BBQ & Soul Food Faves
Marks Uncharted Territory on Coral Gables’ Dining Scene

The culinary team behind South Miami’s highly-successful TOWN Kitchen & Bar (TOWN), “A Neighborhood Joint,” announced today the debut of their latest dining destination:
Smoke’t Southern Kitchen & Tap
1450 South Dixie Highway, Coral Gables
“A Neighborhood BBQ Joint.” With Smoke’t, co-owners Brandon Lurie, John Janette and Michael Altman, executive chef at both TOWN and Smoke’t, infuse cosmopolitan Miami with Deep South flavor, re-interpreted.

Through hundreds of tastings, Altman and his team developed Smoke’t’s inventive, Southern-inspired menu items, such as Pepper Jack Cheese-filled Hushpuppies, and BBQ Pork Red Neck Rolls with Blazin Sauce (a creative transformation of sushi from Japanese cuisine to down home BBQ flavored meats and fixins’ wrapped in sticky rice) filled with Cole Slaw, served with a Homemade Spicy BBQ Dipping Sauce.

“The menu was really important to us,” said Altman. “We wanted sophisticated southern food which, until now, didn’t exist in Miami.”

As pit barbecue is one of the most important styles of food in Southern cuisine, Smoke’t showcases various flavors from U.S. barbecue capitals, all prepared on its in-house smoker, including Shredded Brisket with a Texas style BBQ sauce, Kansas City baby back ribs, Memphis style dry rub spare ribs and Carolina pulled pork. Rated “Best BBQ Sauce” by Jack Daniels Grill Your Eats South Beach, Altman’s knock-your-socks-off original creation is featured in most of Smoke’t’s offerings.

Traditional specialties include deep fried chicken on waffles, brussel sprouts, country fried steak, cornbread, mashed potatoes, fried catfish and berry cobblers. Smoke’t also serves southern-influenced salads and sandwiches. Smoke’t has even created a kids menu since even kids can’t resist many of Smoke’t’s offerings. The adults won’t be able to resist either with Smoke’t’s affordable menu pricing.

At 5,000 sq. ft., Smoke’t has capacity for more than 200 guests. Lounge-style furniture, cozy banquettes and roomy tables ensure a right-at-home feeling, where patrons are the center of attention. Eclectic artwork, antique décor elements and clever, eye-catching design features, like in-wall wood storage (for the smokers), round out Smoke’t’s casual yet chic ambiance with a touch of whimsy. The restaurant also features a club-style sound system for upcoming LIVE, classic rock music performances on their stage that highlights a Yamaha piano.

Ten flat screen televisions, a shuffleboard table and outdoor seating make Smoke’t a perfect spot for a light bite or drink. Smoke’t’s bar features 12 beers on tap, in addition to the 87 other beer selections and food items on its extensive bar menu.

In the months ahead, Smoke’t will launch an extensive wine program.

Smoke’t Southern Kitchen & Tap is open: Lunch will be served beginning early February, daily from 11:30 AM to 5:30 PM.
Dinner: Sunday – Tuesday 5:30 PM – 10:00 PM
Wednesday – Saturday 5:30 PM – 11:00 PM

For reservations, please call 305.672.0011. Additional information about Smoke’t Southern Kitchen & Tap can be found at www.smoketbbq.com.
