Reception March 14, 7-10 pm
David Castillo Gallery is proud to present new work by Jackie Gendel and Tom McGrath. Jackie Gendel combines personal langauge, Art Historical reference, and cultural cues to create a place and time populated largely by symbolic women and feminized notions of abstraction. The work brings to bear the decadence of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Miss Haversham’s disquieting nostalgia. Gendel magnetizes oil paint, merging and estranging color, form, and a delirious but skeptical mode of expressionism. The ultimate effect of her alchemy is akin to being caught in a bad dream. The viewer floats like a Matisse subject through a psychological landscape rendered with careful ambiguity-an oxymoron that pushes Gendel’s mastery of her medium to transient ends. The viewer begins to doubt the innocuous round of a chin against chin modestly discernable beneath an otherworld of lemon chiffon. Who are these women? What do they want? How much of their effervescence is self-portraiture, how much is observation, and how much is paint finding paint on canvas?

Tom McGrath’s recent work hinges on the painted idiom between the personal and the societal. His gridded sky-views inspired by red-eye flights and lookout points along Los Angeles’s Mulholland Drive command a romanticism in the emotional contexts familiar to American cities and city-dwellers. The God- views imbibed by his large canvasses speak not only to the theme-park tourism of American Graffiti-esque make-out spots, but also to the Manifest Destiny apparent in American painting, real estate, and privilege. McGrath’s combination of neon and naturalist colors as well as the underlying irrationality of applied paint behind his grids suggests a wildness in opposition to imperialist thought in American sentiment and sustainability.

Jackie Gendel earned her MFA in Painting and Printmaking from Yale University. She has been an artist in residence at the MacDowell Colony and The Atlantic Center for the Arts. Her work has appeared in Art Papers, Art in America, and the New Yorker. Tom McGrath holds degrees from the Cooper Union School of Art and Columbia University. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and has appeared in Artforum and Harper’s Magazine.

Opportunities multiply as they are seized
David Castillo Annex
2234 NW 2nd Avenue, Miami
March 14 – April 4, 2009
Reception March 14, 7-10 pm

In the David Castillo Annex, Shay Kun’s Opportunities multiply as they are seized presents a spiritual almanac that unites Himalayan clefts and the shallows of the Hudson River School; a leisurely hot air balloon and the coveralls of industrial unionists; the Bobbsey twins and G.I. Joe. His oil on canvas works recall plein air painting, psychedelic exploration, and science fiction fanzines. Titles such as Put aside the alienation and Knowledge speaks, but wisdom listens allow space for the narrative voice of his landscapes to easily incorporate Grandma’s parabolic musings, calculated propaganda, and the script of an undiscovered Alejandro Jodorowsky film.

However, a prolonged look at Opportunities multiply as they are seized seems to suggest that despite the collage-like harmony of Kun’s imagery, Thomas Cole would shake his head at nature’s grandeur populated by human invaders-tourists, adventurists, and workers from all social strata. Although these interlopers and the traces of their occupation do not overwhelm the sublimity of nature, they do question the meaning of progress, the possibility of symbiosis, and whether the spiritual cognizance Cole and his colleagues ascribed to the outdoors stem from unadulterated nature alone.

Shay Kun earned an MA in Fine Art from Goldsmiths College, London. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally.

Mideo M. Cruz – Everything Must Go

Notions of self as nation are currently besieged, their inner gut work sucked out by a voracious globalist zeitgeist funded by large late capital. To cite a potential contribution to one’s national culture would have to be determinedly conceited on mine or Mideo’s part, but, if one might be able to determine such a lofty yet necessarily foundational category, then one would have to support those who have been consistent, bold and willing to sustain its thankless, uphill climb, for all that takes. Mideo Cruz has so far shown himself to be equal to this. The nationalist project of Social Realism in the Philippines, which began in 1975, has found, after the co-opted faltering of Salingpusa and untimely implosion of Sanggawa, an appropriate bridge into the 21st century’s vast, bewildering and fractured terrain in Mideo Cruz and his collective, the new world disorder. Jose Tence Ruiz

J. Valdivia – Ten-Selves

Artist Statement:

As a child I would gaze at other children as mysterious individuals. I have shifted that light onto myself to inspect my identity as a person. One’s body, gender, life paths, and death have all been preoccupations of mine. I’ve noticed a need to create identities accordingly with the yearning to be accepted. With that desire I have suffered, rejoiced, and grown thicker skin to bitterness. I find myself on a dividing path of choice in which we take leaps, steps and falls. With destination in mind similarly to one another, we stand alone within an objective psyche.

Fantastic New Paintings by RYAN HESHKA
March 14th, 7-11pm

NEW LOCATION
2294 NW 2nd Ave.
Miami, Florida 33127
(Wynwood Art District)

Ryan Heshka pays homage to Golden Era sci fi pulp while creating a style that is also uniquely his own. He explores themes of man vs nature, (even though often the “nature” is from another world) as well as the exploring the ideology of pushing the limits of science as a tool to help and further mankind, and the technological terrors that can be inadvertently unleashed as a result.

His newer series is also influenced by WW2 era propaganda posters, which demonized the enemy into an cartoonish and evil caricature. Is this case, the “enemy” really is an alien threat and deserving of such treatment!

His work is acrylic painted on wood panel, heavily varnished and embellished with tags cut from pulp magazines, which serve as inspiration and explanation of each piece.

Ryan’s work must be experienced in person, so please come to this special show and see our new location. Originals, Prints, Books, ect… will be available for every budget. See ya there!

Gallerist Eric Charest-Weinberg will be giving the students of the Miami Design District’s Design and Architecture Senior High School (DASH) their first big break. The best artwork done by juniors and seniors will be presented in an exhibition at the Charest-Weinberg Gallery (250 NW 23rd Street – Space 408) on March 14th, 2009, from 7 to 10 PM during the Wynwood Gallery Walk. All proceeds from sales of the work at this special event will go directly to the student artists.

Students featured in the exhibition include: Christopher Bender, Alejandro Cercas, Marcela Escobar, Victor Fernandez, Jasmine Nones-Newman, Lauren Robie, Paula Stevenson, Mei Fung Su, Danielle Zaslavskaya and Thomas Zenteno.

The 24-year old Charest-Weinberg, whose gallery is now celebrating its second season in the Wynwood Arts District, hand-selected the work of the ten students to be featured in this unique exhibition. “I wanted to do something that would directly benefit students that are looking towards art as their life’s work. Throughout my education, I had the benefit of tremendous access to the arts. It allowed to me to follow my passion. Giving these kids a real gallery exhibition and establishing them within the context of a curated show is a great opportunity to push them to follow their own.”

“It is not often that high school students are presented the chance to participate in a truly professional endeavor; especially in today’s competitive art world,” said DASH Principal Stacey Mancuso. “Mr. Charest-Weinberg recognizes these challenges and has responded by this creating this wonderful opportunity. I am honored that Eric has selected DASH as his venue for inquiry. The students are truly delighted to be associated with the exhibition.”

In addition to showcasing new work from the participating students, each artist has been asked to compose their own text to accompany the work that they will be displaying.

HOME Miami & Florida Travel + Life will be sponsoring this one night only event.

In addition, the Charest-Weinberg Gallery has partnered with a number of local business who have agreed to donate to this exhibition including: Impress Digital Printing Solutions impressmiami.com, Clic::Studio Photography clicstudio.com and USA Frame usaframe.com.

Donated Art Aids Exhibition Program Purchase a ticket for a chance to win the above artwork by visiting www.becagallery.com

BECA gallery | New Orleans has been the fortunate recipient of a very generous gift which offers the opportunity to continue the gallery’s exhibition program in New Orleans dedicated to providing exhibition opportunities to innovative emerging artists + designers from around the globe. This gift also gives art enthusiasts the opportunity to win a beautiful work of art valued at $3,600 USD for the price of a $5 USD ticket! To aid the gallery, one of its earliest and most enthusiastic supporters has graciously donated to the gallery the gift of the beautiful photographic work titled, ‘Red Deer – Bibliotheque German Parliament – Berlin’ by renowned London based artists Maslen & Mehra. The work is Limited Edition No. 3 of 5, Durst Lambda print on aluminum and silicon mounted acrylic (pictured above). This work and the artists were first introduced to the southern United States last April during BECA gallery’s group exhibition “MIRROR for the 21st Century” with guest curator, Helen Pheby, PhD.

BECA gallery will hold an Art Drawing for “Red Deer – Bibliotheque German Parliament – Berlin” to hopefully prevent the end of their exhibition program which has proven to be beneficial to many

within the local, national and international arts communities. Within its first year of 2008 alone, BECA gallery has given exhibition opportunities to 91 local, national and international emerging artists via its physical gallery space in New Orleans as well as here on-line. Maslen & Mehra “engage in a powerful dialogue on the natural and human world in which we live”. When their work arrived at the gallery, Roberts and Schlough were captivated by the beautifully staged narrative scenes within their photographs and their choice of landscapes and architectural settings from around the world. Their placement of reflective sculptural silhouettes within these environments results in a glimpse into a possible parallel universe as suggested by art critic and art historian Edward Lucie-Smith. Additional images and information on Maslen & Mehra may be found here and here, respectively.

The opportunity to win this piece valued at $3,600 USD via this Art Drawing is very rare and would not have happened if not for the generosity of a fellow art lover. In addition, BECA gallery wishes to thank artists Maslen & Mehra who have generously donated a copy of their first monograph titled, ‘MIRRORED’ highlighting their many years of collaborative practices and unique works which have brought them international critical recognition, as a secondary prize for this Art Drawing. The hardcover monograph is 184 pages including 120 color photographs. One winning ticket will be drawn for the artwork and a second winning ticket will be drawn for the monograph. Anyone from any country may purchase tickets. The ticket price is $5 USD per ticket and you may purchase as many tickets as you wish either here online or at the gallery location at 527 St. Joseph Street, New Orleans, LA 70130. You may also mail your ticket purchase made payable to BECA gallery to the aforementioned address. (Much better odds than the lottery and it aids a great emerging art exhibition program!) ‘Red Deer – Bibliotheque German Parliament – Berlin’ is currently on view at BECA gallery. On March 15th, one lucky winner’s name will be drawn to become the new owner of this beautiful artwork and we will also randomly draw a second lucky winner’s name to be the recipient of the Maslen & Mehra monograph ‘MIRRORED’.

If shipment outside of New Orleans is required, BECA gallery will share equally with the winner in the costs of the least expensive shipping method. Any costs associated with the exporting or importing of these prizes abroad will be the responsibility of the winner. THANK YOU ALL in advance for purchasing tickets and for helping to spread the word about this Art Drawing.

MDPL presents Frank Sinatra (and the Cardozo Hotel) in “A Hole in the Head” 3/14/09

FILMS AT THE LIBRARY
Saturday 14 March
11:00 am

MADE IN MIAMI BEACH
Join us for a series of films that are set (and substantially filmed) in Miami Beach in the 1940s and 50s. These films feature great directors, compelling performances, and glamorous (and not so glamorous!) hotels in Miami Beach’s golden years.

A Hole in the Head
Directed by Frank Capra
USA/1959/120 minutes/Color

Like most of director Frank Capra’s films, this film is an observant portrait of the fighting man and his repressive surroundings, but Capra offers a variation of the theme by revealing the obstacles as self-made. Tony Manetta (Frank Sinatra) is a gambler and womanizer, who blows his money at the first opportunity and now faces eviction and loss of his business (an Ocean Drive hotel known in the film as the “Garden of Eden” – but in real life the Cardozo Hotel). Complicating his worries is his young son who lives with him. Despite their troubles, they want to stick together, because they’re not only a family, but also a team. Free admission.

11TH ANNUAL MIAMI FASHION WEEK® TO SHOWCASE
GLOBAL Cuisine AT FIRST INTERNATIONAL CULINARY ARTS PAVILION
Nightly Tastings Feature Haute Cuisine Representing Designers’ Countries

The largest event in the country spotlighting international fashion hits the runways in Miami when designers, entertainers and celebrities from around the globe take part in the 11th annual Miami Fashion Week®, March 19 through March 22. Making its debut at this year’s Miami Fashion Week® is the International Culinary Arts Pavilion — a fashionable feast occurring nightly under the design direction of a different celebrity chef who will create cuisine inspired by the native countries of the fashion designers being showcased that night. Accompanying the tasting menus will be wine pairings by Italian vineyard Casa Vinicola Zonin. The International Culinary Arts Pavilion is being presented by Whole Foods Market, Johnson & Wales University, and A Joy Wallace Catering Production and Design Team.

Thursday night, March 19, Elgin Woodman, Chef de Cuisine, A Joy Wallace Catering Production and Design Team, will be creating a tasting menu featuring native tastes from the Caribbean, including South Florida favorites. A native of Lima, Peru, Chef Woodman received her Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management from Florida International University in 1993. In 1997, she joined A Joy Wallace and she was recently a featured chef in a new cookbook titled “Inside the Recipe Box of the Catering Chef.” She was also named as one of three finalists for the International Caterer’s Association’s Chef of the Year for 2008.
Friday, March 20, the International Culinary Arts Pavilion travels to the Dominican Republic and South America with James Beard Award finalist Chef Edgar Leal from Cacao Restaurant. Chef Leal began his career as an apprentice cook under the guidance of Chef Marc Provost at Gazebo Restaurant in his native Caracas, Venezuela. After a series of impressive accomplishments throughout Europe, Chef Leal opened Cacao in Coral Gables in October 2002, with his wife Mariana Montero De Castro, Chef de Cuisine and Patissier of the restaurant. Cacao Restaurant was named Best New Restaurant by Food & Wine, Florida Trend Magazine and The Miami Herald, and Coral Gables’ Most Accomplished Restaurant by Wine Spectator. Chef Leal has been featured by The New York Times, Time Magazine and has appeared on NBC’s “Today Show.” In 2007, Cacao was named one of America’s top 10 restaurants in Miami/South Florida by Zagat’s Restaurant Survey.

FIU Honors College Students Curate the Aesthetics and Values Exhibition 2009

March 16 – April 10, 2009

Reception – April 3, 2009 Followed by a Lecture by artist, Ann Hamilton

MIAMI – The Aesthetics & Values class of the Honors College at Florida International University (FIU) presents the Aesthetics and Values Exhibition 2009, an annual exhibition that is executed solely by students within the class under the supervision of artist and Professor John Bailly. Opening on March 16, 2009, the show will run until April 10 in the Gallery at the Green Library (2nd floor) at FIU and will showcase established Miami artists. On April 3 from 5 to 8 p.m., the students will host a reception for the A&V 2009 exhibition. This A&V 2009 reception will be followed by the Frost Art Museum’s Steven & Dorothea Green Critics’ Lecture Series at 8 p.m.. The April 3 lecture is by Ann Hamilton, an internationally recognized visual artist creating large scale multi media installations.

The Aesthetics & Values 2009 exhibition includes work in various media formats by Ray Azcuy, Brian Burkhardt, Cooper, Julie Davidow, Edouard Duval Carrié, Jacek Kolasinski, Mark Koven, Ralph Provisero, Sara Stites, and Ruben Torres-Llorca.

The annual exhibition provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate their resourcefulness and creativity through the research, curation, and organization of an on-campus exhibition of contemporary Miami artists. After forming committees (Exhibition, Fundraising, and Public Relations) and assuming personal tasks (designing a website, soliciting funds, preparing a press release, etc), students are responsible for coordinating all aspects of the exhibition, including selecting artists, securing funding, negotiating gallery space, working with university administration, and managing local media. Images are available upon request.

The Gallery at the Green Library is located at 11200 S.W. 8th Street, Miami, FL 33139.

The exhibition will be open Monday to Thursday from 7:30 a.m. until 1a.m., Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 10:00 p.m., Saturday from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 a.m. For more information please visit the website at www.avexhibition.org or contact John Bailly at 305-348-0297.

Abel Ferrara followed by Chelsea on the Rocks
Thursday, March 12, at 7pm at the Gusman

It is our pleasure to honor independent filmmaker Abel Ferrara with the Career Achievement Tribute. And like the city where he was born in, Ferrara and his films are true diamonds in the rough; solid and often crude, at times brutal, yet always true, heart-felt and full of grace.

6th Annual Everglades Awareness Benefit Concert at Tobacco Road hosted by Ploppy Palace Productions 3/21/09

6th ANNUAL FLORIDA EVERGLADES BENEFIT
SATURDAY, MARCH 21ST
features THE COFFEE HOUSE GYPSIES

Currently, the Everglades is one of the most threatened natural habitat in the western hemisphere. Residential development, water management and agricultural use have shifted natural water patterns and have altered the vitality of the ecosystem. With an alarming number of people moving into South Florida every year, we need to come together and help to protect the Everglades for our survival.

On Saturday, March 21, 2009 Ploppy Palace Productions and Tobacco Road will be hosting a concert to raise awareness and funds for the Hold The Line Campaign and for Everglades protection. As part of this four stage extravaganza, some of South Florida’s top bands, spoken word artists and community activists will join together to raise awareness for this vital natural resource.

The Coffee House Gypsies (winners of NINE Status QuO South Florida Indie Live Music Awards last December) will perform at 4:30 PM. There will also be a broad variety of musical styles including jazz, rock, folk, blues, traditional Peruvian, vocal harmonies, melodic keyboards, Latin, funk, experimental, tribal rhythms, world beat fusion, psychedelic grooves and various interactive jams. Local folk legend, Valerie Wisecracker is also in the lineup of performers.

In addition, Linx, Anibal Fernandez, and other creative artists will be rendering live art demonstrations and there will be a DVD slide show from the Everglades Art Exhibition. Conservation advocates from Miami Sierra Club will be speaking about their involvement in the Hold The Line Campaign. Other speakers will include Mario Yanez from Earth Learning, Ray Scattone from the F.I.U. Dept. of Environmental Studies, Dawn Shirreffs from Clean Water Action as well as a selection of special guests.

Clean Water Action, Artists for Community Evolution, F.I.U. Dept. of Environmental Studies and other community organizations will have information booths with handouts and contacts to help educate about social issues and the environmental risk that threatens the natural balance of the Everglades. The event will work to raise funds and awareness for the Hold The Line Campaign and support efforts by a selection of various organizations.

There will be vendors and small businesses promoting and selling their merchandise, including The Wallflower Gallery, Sergio Torres, Progressive Rags, Between Spirit & Stone Jewelry, and selected independent corporations.

The 6th Annual Everglades Awareness Benefit Concert is sponsored by Ploppy Palace Productions, Atlas Audio Productions, Anamaze Productions, 7th Circuit Productions, Cymbal Outfitters, Mystic Cat Productions, Antidote Productions, Online Gigs.com, Music Art Love, and The Wallflower Gallery.

Reception for Autocycles by Matt Carone 3/6/09

Autocycles by Matt Carone
ArtSpace Virginia Miller Galleries
cordially invites you to our opening reception
Reception:
Friday, March 6th
7 – 10 pm
Location:
ArtSpace Virginia Miller Galleries
169 Madeira Avenue
Coral Gables, FL 33134

“Autocycles,” The latest twists in the lifelong evolution of paintings by Matt Carone will open at ArtSpace/Virginia Miller Galleries at 7 p.m. Friday, Mar. 6th.

Largely inspired by his 45-year friendship with the famed Chilean painter Roberto Matta, Carone’s paintings recently took a turn toward a more patterned abstraction.

According to the artist, the new subtly toned works “seem to be an opening of a new door of automatism.
“The approach is similar to the past works but the image is arrived at more spontaneously and graphically,” Carone says. “Subconscious symbols and rhythmic gestures relating to each other or canceling each other out seem to be the building blocks to the final statement

“The seed,” he acknowledges, “was planted by Matta.”

Like the abstract expressionists, Carone seeks “a spontaneous image as a consequence of a gesture…dictated more by the subconscious than by a rational, disciplined procedure.”

Carone became interested in art as an adolescent during the summer of 1944, when he was asked to model for Hans Hoffman. His older brother, the well-known painter Nicolas Carone, was studying with Hoffman.

Empfangshalle with Thomas Adebahr The Benjamin Project at Gallery Diet 3/14/09

EMPFANGSHALLE with Thomas Adebahr
The Benjamin Project

March 14th – April 4th 2009
Opening Reception March 14th 7 – 10 PM

Gallery Diet is pleased to announce the latest exhibition in its invitational series, The Benjamin Project by German collaborative, Empfangshalle and Thomas Adebahr. The artists, whose work has been exhibited globally at prestigious events and institutions such as the 52nd Venice Biennial and Ars Electronica in Linz, Austria, will be exhibiting for the first time in Miami, Florida. The Benjamin Project, which consists of a series of large oil paintings, and one documentary video, is rooted in the critique and exploration of what is and what can be considered “original.” In Dafen, China, the world’s capital city for copying works of art, Empfangshalle has commissioned artists to make paintings derived from every double page of Walter Benjamin’s essay, “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction.” 38 paintings in total where every letter, the fine structure of the paper, the way the lines shimmer through on the other side, the fold and other details, are recorded by the Chinese artists – each in his or her own way. Every work is created by a different workshop, a different painter, every painting marked with the painter’s unique signature.
Also on view, an excerpt from the documentary film chronicling this process. Empfangshalle is comprised of two artists, Corbinian Böhm and Michael Gruber, who for this project worked alongside German filmmaker Thomas Adebahr. This exhibition will be on view from March 14th thru April 4th 2009 at Gallery Diet with an opening reception March 14th from 7 – 10 p.m.

Artoconecto is excited to present painter Robert F. Merton’s first solo exhibition ‘Temperatures’, on Thursday, April 9, 2009, for a sneak VIP preview, followed by an exhibition open to the public on Saturday, April 11, at The Buena Vista Building in Miami’s Design District. The painter, who resides in the colder climes of New England, in the seaside village of Cohasset, will unveil his exciting new work in the tropical climate of Miami, where his work has received considerable early attention. His vibrant work, like his family name, demands historical perspective-his grandfather, Robert K. Merton, was a groundbreaking sociologist, who coined terms like ‘self-fulfilling prophecy’, and ‘unintended consequences’. His father, Robert C. Merton, won a Nobel Prize in economics in 1997 for his work on a new method to determine the value of derivatives. And his own study of 15th-17th century European history, when a human-powered economy evolved into a mechanized economy (and a mechanized society), has influenced his understanding of the transitions through which society and its members must evolve. “The transition period is what interests me,” says Merton. “We are in an era of change, and we must embrace that.”
Perhaps the natural progression of generations, from preeminent sociologist, to Nobel Prize winner, to visual artist, to whatever the future may bring for the youngest Merton, his son, Robert A. Merton, not only defines Robert F. Merton’s work, but bestows upon it its enduring resonance. “Not everything has an immediate ’cause and effect’. But everything in the past has an effect on the present.” Through his exacting work he alludes to the creative sweep of time; but Merton remains firmly rooted in the present, while acknowledging the ever-evolving and challenging journey towards our future.
Artoconecto, the dynamic arts non-profit based in Miami is adding a new layer to its mission statement of promoting emerging artists with Robert F. Merton’s Temperatures, by providing one artist with the tools to prepare for their first solo exhibition. “We would like to be able to create the first solo show for artists whose work we believe in; and who also have the drive, the talent and completed works ready to exhibit, but have not yet been approached or selected by a commercial gallery”, says Alexandra Rangel-Brody, Executive Director for Artoconecto, which has been operating since 1999 in Washington, D.C.
Robert F. Merton’s Temperatures is made possible by the generous support of Ms. Cosette Alves, President and Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of The Inter-American Culture and Development Foundation and the support of Dacra. For more information, please visit www.robertfmerton.com

Life Is Art Announces Artist List For The Inaugural Miami Featured Artist Fair 3/7/09

After finding a sponsor for a venue to host their art fair, Life Is Art quickly moved to put out a call for artists. Given the short time span, and the fact that it was a new organization, they expected to receive a few artists showing interest. Instead, the applications came pouring in rapidly. “The response was overwhelming,” states James Echols, one of the founders of the non-profit organization designed to promote and support the Miami arts scene.

“We had originally planned to host ten or a dozen artists,” Echols said, “but we had so many excellent submissions that we expanded it to nearly twenty.” However, there were many good artists that had to be turned away for this first fair. Fortunately, Life Is Art plans to produce numerous events and hopes to be able to work with many more artists in the future.

Life Is Art is hosting a wide variety of Miami-based artists, sculptors, painters, and photographers, from those with much experience to those for whom this is their first show.

The unique and exotic nature of South Beach with it’s diverse mixture of life was so eerily familiar to Scott Branch’s childhood in Saudi Arabia that he found himself wanting to photograph every bit of life around him when he relocated to Miami in 2007. Today, Scott shoots primarily models, from fashion to erotica, street photography, and anything that catches his eye in the place he now calls home.

Dianne Romero Buitrago’s work is based on drawings of fears and things in this world we reject to see. The drawing of mutilated, distorted lines embodies a web of lust, birth, destruction and fear. They are scrolls of the world thru her eyes.

Angelica Clyman is a native of South Florida whose work centers around introspective experience and the search for the sacred in the most ordinary places. Her paintings explore the shifting perceptions of her changing environment, and express stillness, solitude, and a sense of private adventure. She has received her BFA from New World School of the Arts and her MFA from Florida International University, and currently is an artist-in-residence at the Art Center / South Florida.

Diana Contreras believes that art is a form of worship and therefore Christianity influences much of her work. Masters such as Frida Kahlo, Gustav Klimt, and Salvador Dali have been an inspiration to her artwork. The ability to work in many mediums including charcoal, watercolor, and oil has given Diana freedom to experiment in mixed media.

Nathan Delinois has numerous influences including his Haitian background and the use of color in a lot of Haitian art, as well as much of the graffiti of Marc Ecko, Tat’s Cru and The Inkheads. The design quality of African art and the drama of Greek art from the Hellenistic period can also been seen in his work. Additionally, he takes some influence from the new pop surrealists also known as lowbrow artists.

In her work, Natasha Duwin explores the ideas of female-ness and womanhood using non-traditional materials, such as metals and organic matter, in traditionally “feminine” techniques, such as weaving and embroidery. She has shown extensively, and is included in several prominent collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan. She holds an MFA in Visual Arts from Florida International University and is an Artist-in-Residence at ArtCenter South Florida.

Daniel Fiorda is self-taught and has exhibited widely throughout the U.S. including OK Harris Gallery, Allan Stone Gallery in New York as well as Heriard-Cimino Gallery in New Orleans and Lelia Mordoch Gallery, Paris France. Daniel was one of the winners in the 7th Annual Sculptures Competition (2003) held at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas. He is an alumni Artist of ArtCenter/South Florida.

Ania Moussawel took an early interest in the arts. After taking her first course in photography, she was smitten and felt it allowed her to express her ideas better than any other medium. She studied photography at Parsons School of Design in New York City and Barry University in Miami Shores. In this series, Ania uses nightgowns to explore the fundamental nature of women.

Grateful Dan uses ambient backgrounds, colors and form inspired by artists such as McGee, Klimt and Rivera, as well as music and poetry to reflect certain moods and/or to tell a short narrative whose cause and effect is open to speculation.

Emilio Hector Rodriguez uses art to help him grow younger. Originally from Cuba, he moved to Miami in 1982. A life-long artist, in 2005 he began painting with acrylic guided by the well-known Cuban painter Dominica Alcantra.

Andres Dominguez Saavedra’s project conveys a vision typical of Chilean culture. This artistic design reveals this identity and in hi interpretation of it he evokes certain characteristics from classical art in which the study of drawing and sketch are developed within the finished artwork.

R. E. SANCHEZ is a Miami-based artist whose work has been exhibited regularly in non-profit organizations and gallery venues. He is a Salvadoran expatriate who relocated to the U.S. to pursue his passion for art in 1989. He received his Bachelor of Art (BFA) from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2000. Since 1994 he has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions both nationally and internationally. His work can be found in many private collections. R. E. SANCHEZ’s work offers cultural commentary on the personal, social and political events of the human experience.

Wagner Schneider is a self-taught artist who expresses himself without boundaries, against the norm and in constant search for the “boredom breaker” as he calls it. Wagner opposes learning through art schools, as he believes the artist should be found from within, free and never molded by the teachings of any institution.

Since 1999, the bulk of Dan Vidal‘s photographic work has focused on the nightlife culture of the major cities of the U.S. During this time, the nightlife photographer has risen from being a marginal player in the scene to an integral, almost ubiquitous documentarian. With an eye towards getting away from that ubiquity, Vidal utilizes all the elements within the events and locations where he shoots, existing lights, reflections, fog, smoke, and expression for that elusive “right” look.

Adding new dimensions to abstract painting and expanding the essence of emotions, Felicia Warren blends or blurs conventional methods of using materials while creating on the canvas. Her fingers often become the paintbrush and the canvas becomes the palette while she is searching for the representation of her thought.

Kacey Westall Keogh received her B.F.A from F.I.U. and has exhibited work and performed live drawings throughout South Florida including The Wallflower Gallery, Kevro Art Bar, Edge Zones Gallery, SCOPE Art Fair and Miami Art Space. Her work deals with ephemeral thoughts and the perplexity of the conscious and unconscious mind.

For Daniela Wicki, art is an aesthetic, ethical and ultimately spiritual force; a challenge made in the experience of finding in each and every creation, a self realization, a self portrait of her own energy, a landscape of forces, life in motion rather than still-life. Art speaks for itself.

Hosting all these artists, the fair is being held at the historic 1926 Seminole Building, also called the Terminal Lofts, in the Wynwood Arts District at 120 Northwest 25th Street on March 7th from 2:00pm to 10:00pm. The venue is kindly sponsored by Lombardi Properties. The fair is also being supported by Henry Stone Music and SoulOfMiami.org.

The visual arts are accompanied by music, fashion, performance, food, and, of course, drink. Complimentary beverages are provided by Grolsch Beer, Barefoot Wine, with eco-friendly cocktails courtesy of VeeV, and espresso to keep everything hopping by Oro Coffee & Tea Services. The Lounge is provided by the Miami Rescue Mission through their Bargain Barn thrift store. Soho Studios Miami is providing technical support. Promotional support provided by Yelp.com.

Chef Zane is preparing an amazing, yet reasonably priced menu of light fare. Bringing the delicious desserts is D’leecious Bake Shop with a wide variety of tasty treats. Local DJS Soozin, Diaga, Sebastian, David Kerns, and Lumin will provide music, with a wide variety of styles for all tastes. There are even a few exciting surprises in store for fairgoers.

Florida Premieres

$20 Students/Seniors w/ ID

Marie Chouinard is a choreographer who cannot be mistaken for anyone else. Her Montreal-based company has received worldwide acclaim for its angular, startling and moving dance works. This weekend they make a triumphal return to Miami with two outstanding pieces that showcase Chouinard’s unique and distinctive style. In The Rite of Spring, working with Stravinsky’s music, Chouinard, through sensual, almost primal choreography, mines the intimate mysterious depths of each of her dancers. The totem-like costumes that echo the animal world in its violence and beauty add to the dance’s vivid effect. A short solo work, Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, preceeds The Rite of Spring.
Now a fixture on the world’s major stages and at international festivals, Compagnie Marie Chouinard has its roots in Chouinard’s solo work, which began back in 1978. Her over fifty productions, action-performances, vocal works, installations and films earned her a reputation for daring originality. She refined her lifelong interest in formal research and the human body, going on to form her own dance company in 1990. Through her choreography Chouinard has explored the “poetics of the body” in immediate, intelligible and ever-surprising ways.

This performance includes nudity.

Glass Mosaic Exhibition @ ArtCenter 3/6/09

Glass Mosaic Exhibition @ ArtCenter March 6

ArtCenter was established in 1984 by a small group of artists who envisioned a potential cultural renaissance in what was then a blighted and vacant Lincoln Road. In partnership with the City of Miami Beach, the group obtained Federal Community Development Block Grant funds to acquire properties and create an artists’ colony in 21 storefront spaces. Since then, ArtCenter has become the cultural and economic catalyst for the revitalization of the Lincoln Road neighborhood and South Beach. In 1986, the City of Miami Beach recognized the success of our founders’ vision by designating ArtCenter’s three-block area as the Lincoln Road Arts District.
Today, Lincoln Road is a lively magnet for culture, entertainment, retail business and community activity, and Miami Beach is arguably the cultural center of South Florida. Now recognized as one of Miami-Dade County’s major cultural institutions, ArtCenter operates from its three historic buildings at 800, 810 and 924 Lincoln Road. The nearly 60,000 square foot campus encompasses 52 artists’ studios, exhibition galleries, art education classrooms and administrative offices. Of the 7.2 million international and national visitors to Miami/South Beach annually, hundreds of thousands walk down Lincoln Road and view ArtCenter’s display windows and exhibitions.
For its role in the shaping of South Florida’s cultural landscape, ArtCenter has received recognition from local media such as New Times, which in 1997 called us the “best gallery in Miami”, and from national media such as The Wall Street Journal, which in 1998 reported that our “presence has transformed the area…into a hub of commerce.” In its May and November 1999 issues featuring the Greater Miami art community, Art in America magazine highlighted ArtCenter’s “impact on the Miami art scene and its emerging profile” describing ArtCenter as “a gathering place for talented and ambitious young Miami artists.”

FILM NOIR CLASSICS

Film noir, a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish Hollywood crime dramas, often emphasizes moral ambiguity and sexual motivation, derived from the hard-boiled school of crime fiction that emerged in the United States during the Depression. Hollywood’s classic film noir period is generally regarded as stretching from the early 1940s to the late 1950s, and films of this genre are associated with a low-key black-and-white visual style that has roots in German Expressionist cinematography.

Contraband
Directed by Michael Powell
UK/1940/88 minutes/B&W

Set in England during the early days of WW II, Contraband stars Conrad Veidt (The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari) and Valerie Hobson (The Bride of Frankenstein) as a Danish sea captain and his enigmatic passenger who are kidnapped by a cell of Nazi spies operating from a basement in London’s Soho. In evocatively Hitchcockian fashion, the plot progresses as a chase that puts the characters in one peculiar set of surroundings after another. What makes Contraband unique is that most of the story takes place under blackout conditions, in which the great city becomes a mysterious dark labyrinth, a potent metaphor for the English population’s general confusion at the start of the war. Free admission.

Art Deco In Shanghai And Miami Beach 3/6/09

Friday 06 March
6:00 pm
ART DECO IN SHANGHAI AND MIAMI BEACH
A photo presentation and book signing by Miami Beach authors Don and Nina Worth.

Art Deco in Shanghai and Miami Beach was published as a coffee table book by Don and Nina Worth as the culmination of a cultural exchange program between the two cities, that began in 2005 when the authors visited Shanghai and met by chance with acclaimed architect Xing Tong He of China.

The limited edition book features 100 color photographs, 50 of each city, taken by noted photographer Deke Erh, who grew up amongst the Art Deco buildings of Shanghai. Texts were written by Tess Johnston of Shanghai and Clotilde Luce of Miami Beach. In pictorial form, the book reveals two disparate cities with surprising architectural similarities. Shanghai has the largest collection of Art Deco buildings in Asia.

John Henry
The Peninsula Project is a state wide exhibition that showcases not only Henry’s large scale sculptures but the Floridian landscape itself. Henry will install nine large scale sculptures in seven cities across the state of Florida. The Miami sculpture, which towers at 80 feet and weighs between 60 and 70 tons, will be placed in Bicentennial Park’s Deep Water Slip.
Drawing in Space will incorporate the large scale sculpture in the Floridian landscape. Henry specifically chose Florida for this project because of its unique geographic environment. The fact that Florida is a peninsula surrounded by two major bodies of water, offering a sunrise on the east coast and sunset on the west, is an endless fascination of Henry’s.
It is the project’s intention for each sculpture to incorporate itself into the landscape and interact with the community to create an after-image in the mind of the traveler moving from venue to venue across the state.
“This concept is an integral part of the objective of visualizing the separate sculptures as a unified work of art,” Henry said. “Each sculpture is part of a continuous sentence all referencing one another, each an individual part of a greater whole. In many regards, it may be seen to be all one work! It is very much about the process of working together to extend the influence of a particular part of a visual vocabulary.”
The Frost will host the project’s signature exhibition, Peninsula Project Illustrated. This exhibition will highlight and illustrate the entire process and concept behind Drawing in Space. The gallery space will showcase all nine monumental works in the seven participating Floridian cities. With models of the sculpture and large photographs of the pieces set in their various landscapes, the exhibit will be a tribute to the artists’ unprecedented use of the Floridian peninsula as his canvas.

In his work, MFA student John Sanchez represents fleeting moments of our everyday lives that often go unnoticed in the great race to wherever it is that we are going. Street lights, parked cars and lonely buildings are all common subjects in his work.
Sanchez purposely places his subjects in low light to conjure 19th century portraiture. The works are executed using a combination of reference and improvisation to create a solid composition, with very little editing, in an attempt to paint them as fast as these moments occur.

A magic word protected by his sentinel

There was a time, about 15 years ago, while still living in France, that I traveled a lot in Africa, and I was deeply impressed by the African people, who still had one foot in the past, with all their traditions and culture, and one foot in the contemporary world.
Both, the tribal tradition and native art were so strong. They greatly inspired me, but it is only for the past 2 years, that my work has become very influenced by all the semental and emotional “souvenirs”. My work about the Sentinels is, obviously, a translation of African art sculpture and painting combined with specific African symbols.

The official launch party of Skyline Lounge 2/26/09

skyline

Please join us for the official launch party of Skyline Lounge…………… Cocktail reception from 6:30 to 9:30 compliments of Sonnema Vodka

SKYLINE LOUNGE MAKES MIRACLE LANDING ON SOUTH BEACH

( Miami , FL ) February 23, 2009— Miami , Florida- Night life in South Florida is about to be taken to new heights as the newest “Big Apple” import just made a miracle landing in South Beach . The airline themed Skyline Lounge is ready to take guests on a first class voyage as they open their doors Thursday Feb. 26, 2009, from 6:30-9:30pm for a media and cocktail reception hosted by dynamic duo (and siblings) Wilson and Felix Reynoso.

“Wilson and Felix are duplicating the same idea that they successfully launched in the city that never sleeps,” said Bobby Brandt, consultant. New York , where the party never ends was the launch pad for the Reynoso’s flight inspired idea. They went as far as to remove seats, windows, overhead compartments, turbines, and a cockpit from two retired airplanes to adorn Skyline. Skyline is an intimate lounge geared for high end consumers who want to escape the “usual” night clubs that dominate South Beach .

Imagine making your way through the front door and being met by fabulous greeters dressed in flight attendant outfits. As your move through the venue your eyes focus on the two spinning turbines that emit nitrous set up behind the bar that is made up of a DC-9 wing. The typical lounge furniture found in most other venues is no where in sight as airline seats are set up through out the space. The First Class Seating area or what other venues call the VIP section is carefully segregated for those that enjoy some exclusivity. A certain attention to detail is quite apparent as usable overhead compartments are set up around the lounge to serve as a convenient resting place for personal items and the purses of Skylines female patrons. What better way to show off a DJ’s influence over a crowd than to ordain him the pilot of the venue? The center piece is a cockpit removed from a DC-9 which dominates the back wall and serves as the DJ booth.

For in-flight bites, Skyline has enlisted the right talent. Boasting an eclectic menu that was created by acclaimed Chef Frank Jeannetti Skyline offers bite-sized palate pleasing dishes from all over the globe. Jeannetti has a good understanding of what the high-end consumer wants, having created menus for some of North America’s leading restaurants and having worked with some of Tinsel-town’s and Miami’s most finicky stars and celebrities including: Gloria and Emilio Estefan, Will Smith, Hulk Hogan, and Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne. Featuring dishes from Cuba , Vietnam , Hong Kong, and the Middle East , Chef Jeannetti has created a culinary mix for Skyline sure to make patron’s stay a worldly one.

To get this tolling smoothly here in the city of beaches and palm trees, the Reynoso brothers carefully selected the consultation of nightlife veteran Bobby Brandt. Mr. Brandt has over two decades of experience in the night club and service industry in both New York and Miami respectively, owning and operating a total of nine successful club venues and highly acclaimed restaurants. His professional capabilities include: construction, design, layout, bar design and functionality, POS systems, liquor ordering, securing sponsorships, sound systems, house PA, and lighting. He has as acted as City liaison for himself and clients, including licensing and permits, fire department regulations and codes, occupancy, insurance, legal requirements, and negotiating terms. In this capacity, he is greatly responsible for the “launch” of Skyline in South Florida .

Thursday, February 26, 2009 marks the departure date as Skyline celebrates a fabulous grand opening and welcomes VIPs, media, and celebrity guests. Invitees will be treated to a reception from 6:30 pm to 10:00 pm featuring delicious hors de oeuvres and sponsored by Sonnema VodkaHERB. The grand opening not just represents a change in Miami night life but will also benefit the Pets2Luv organization.

“Four years ago, we were just another jazz festival, and now it is really amazing to know that nationally and internationally, we are a well-known and respected music festival. ’Jazz in the Gardens’ has become an economic resource; infusing a new stream of revenue into the South Florida area; creating business opportunities for local businesses and sponsors; and driving tourists into South Florida and the local community. In 2009 we will exceed our past attendance records and continue to make Miami Gardens the winter-break destination for mature adults,” says Mayor Shirley Gibson.

About the Artists

One of the “best kept secrets in the industry,” Frankie Beverly & Maze have been pleasing fans with their unique blend of soul and R&B since the 1976 release of Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly, which yielded a string of hit singles, including “Lady of Magic” and “Workin’ Together.” The group continues to be one of the most requested at music festivals throughout the world drawing major crowds. As a headlining act, Frankie Beverly and Maze have been instrumental in giving exposure to several new recording artists, before they became household names, including Toni Braxton, Regina Belle and Anita Baker.

Attracting fans right from the start, Anthony Hamilton’s unique voice draws its soulful force and story-telling inspiration from such pioneers as Bill Withers, Bobby Womack, Al Green, Johnny Guitar Watson and Marvin Gaye. Hamilton’s career-molding break arrived in 2002 when he sang the infectious hook on the Nappy Roots’ “Po’ Folks.” That performance netted the singer his first Grammy nomination for best rap/sung collaboration–and a new label, So So Def Imprint. Not just a fan favorite, Hamilton is also the go-to singer for other artists whether the medium is R&B/soul, gospel, hip-hop, pop or country. Over the last three years, he has written and/or sung with a who’s who in music including Al Green, Josh Turner, Keyshia Cole, John Rich (Big & Rich), Santana and Mint Condition.

Kenny G., the world’s most renowned saxophonist, has established himself as the biggest-selling instrumental musician of the modern era. For the past two decades Kenny has achieved global sales totaling more than 75 million albums, with 45 million albums sold in the U.S. alone. Kenny G. has become a multi-platinum sensation, collaborating with the likes of Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra, Whitney Houston, Natalie Cole, co-headliner Babyface and Toni Braxton. With each new recording, Kenny begins from a personal place- the sounds that move him. For the past twenty years he has been a fixture in arenas, amphitheaters and concert halls and has performed for millions of people all over the world. Most recently, Kenny G. released his first Latin Jazz album, Rhythm & Romance, backed by some of the world’s finest Latin musicians. The result was a rich, one-of-a-kind tapestry of samba and salsa, ballads and bossa nova, all of which are held together by beautiful melodies. The album is a collection of new songs and beloved classics that are rhythmically rooted in two disparate sounds resulting in a completely original and moving work.

Chicago emcee, Common, has been an influential part of the hip-hop scene since 1992 with the release of his first album, Can I Borrow A Dollar? Through the years, Common has transformed into the gladiator of hip-hop with his conscious and introspective rhymes. Working with acclaimed artists such as Kanye West, Lily Allen, Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu, Common has released hit after hit, including the Grammy-winning “Southside” off of his 2007 album, finding forever. Inspired by the 24-hour party scenes of Prague and Barcelona, Common’s new album, Universal Mind Control, creates a body rockin’ blend of hardcore hip-hop, retro electro, sinister funk and sticky sweet soul. Having made his name in music, Common made the transition from underground hero and eclectic icon rapper to mainstream actor, gaining the eyes and ears of a whole new audience with the releases of hit movies such as Smoking Aces featuring Ben Affleck and Jeremy Piven, Wanted featuring Morgan Freeman and Angelina Jolie and the highly-anticipated Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins featuring Christian Bale.

A 10-time Grammy winner with 11 solo albums of his own, Kenny ‘Babyface’ Edmonds’ impeccably crafts explorations of love, romance and relationships and has left an undeniable footprint on the evolution of contemporary pop music throughout the world. His accomplishments include over 125 Top-10 R&B and Pop hits, 41 #1 R&B hits and 51 Top-10 Pop hits (including 16 #1’s), which have produced single and album sales in excess of over 100 million units. In addition to his chart-topping music, Babyface has been the recipient of numerous Soul Train Music Awards, BMI Awards, NAACP Image Awards and American Music Awards. Edmonds was the recipient of the third BET Walk of Fame Award and was named BET’s “Entertainer of the Year” at the First Annual BET Awards Ceremony. This year he will receive a star on Hollywood’s legendary Walk of Fame.

Often recognized as the pioneer of the Neo soul movement, Erykah Badu began enchanting audiences with her 5X platinum-selling debut album, Baduizm in 1997. Her turban-wearing, incense-burning mystique and coy crooning would earn her four Grammy’s, including Best Female R&B Vocal performance for the single, “On and On.” Although Badu’s multifarious musical roots of soul, jazz, and hip-hop do collide to make sweet chaos, it is Badu’s organic hip-hop sensibilities that pervade her new opus, New Amerykah Part I: The 4th World War. The multifaceted singer, songwriter and producer is well-known for selling out live concerts and wooing fans worldwide.

For two decades Will Downing has wowed sophisticated soul fans with his soothing and sensual baritone voice. Downing’s winning musical blend has landed him on radio stations across the R&B, smooth jazz and adult contemporary dial. His hits include “Sorry, I,” “Do You Still Love Me,” “Nothing Has Ever Felt Like This” (a duet with Rachelle Ferrell), “When You Need Me” (a duet with Chante’ Moore), “Don’t Talk To Me Like That” and “A Million Ways.” His engaging live shows have made him a familiar touring presence, performing in Europe and stateside at venues ranging from nightclubs to outdoor festivals and, particularly, all-star packages. Downing has graced stages with cross-pollinating peers such as Gerald Albright, George Duke, Regina Belle, Jonathan Butler, Art Porter, Lee Ritenour and Vesta, just to name a few. After behind-the-scenes work with `80s club producer, King Arthur Baker and vocal diva, Jennifer Holiday, the Brooklyn-born singer/songwriter made his solo debut in 1988 with the self-titled album, Will Downing. Suffice it to say that after two decades of remarkable recordings and performances around the globe, Downing is recognized as the premier male vocalist for the embodiment of his singular, sensuous blend of R&B, jazz and pop.

Vibraphonist/vocalist Roy Ayers is among the best-known, most-loved and respected jazz/R&B artists on the music-scene today. Now in his fourth decade in the music business, Ayers, known as the Godfather of Neo-soul, continues to bridge the gap between generations of music lovers. In the ’60s he was an award-winning jazz vibraphonist, and transformed into a popular R&B bandleader in the ’70s/’80s. Today, the dynamic music man is an iconic figure still in great demand and whose music has been sampled by music industry heavyweights, including Mary J. Blige, Erykah Badu, 50 Cent, A Tribe Called Quest, Tupac, and Ice Cube. Ayers recently recorded with hip-hop artist Talib Kweli (produced by Kanye West) and jazz/R&B singer Will Downing. Many of Ayers’ songs including “Everybody Loves the Sunshine,” “Searchin”, “Running Away” have been frequently sampled and remixed by DJ’s worldwide.

Afro-funk, reggae, samba, salsa, gospel, jazz, Zairean rumba, zouk, and makossa are combined through the music of soulful, Benin-born, Paris-based vocalist Angélique Kidjo. Since the release of her self-produced debut solo album, Pretty, in 1988, Kidjo has been embraced by the international press. Kidjo’s albums have been strengthened by contributions from top-notch guest musicians such as: Cassandra Wilson, Kelly Price, Carlos Santana and Dave Matthews. She has also collaborated with exceptional producers, including Miami local Joe Galdo of the Miami Sound Machine. In 20002, Kidjo had her major label debut with Black Ivory Soul, where she explored musical elements of her native Benin to that of northeastern Brazil. Most recently, Kidjo joined forces with Razor & Tie for the May 2007 release of Djin Djin.

Gifted singer, two-time Grammy-nominated songwriter, guitarist and producer, Jonathan Butler, is the product of the Western World. Jonathan’s ability to blend his roots in African music with western pop sensibilities is the trademark of his many albums. At thirteen, Jonathan’s talents caught the ears and eyes of British record producer, Clive Caulder. He was signed to Caulder’s Jive Records and as the old cliché goes, “the rest is history.” Jonathan’s first single broke down racial barriers, becoming the first song by a black artist to be played by white radio stations in South Africa. In the 1990’s Butler solidified his presence with a body of music that crossed color and age lines.

“Jazz in the Gardens”, a two-day, weekend festival, is now in its fourth year and has grown to be one of the top cultural events in South Florida. The jazz festival delivers a diverse mix of music genres that range from Jazz, R&B, Caribbean and African sounds. “Jazz in the Gardens” has something to offer all music aficionados. In 2008, 17,000 attendees enjoyed everything from the Caribbean-infused hip-hop of Wyclef Jean, to the funky R&B of Chaka Khan and the hip neo-jazz soul of Chrisette Michele, to the soul-stirring vocals of the legendary Nancy Wilson.

“Jazz in the Gardens” is proudly sponsored by Dolphin Stadium, The Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa, Tootsies Cabaret, Shula’s Hotel & Golf Club, Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, UAIC, Southern Wine & Spirits, Comcast, FPL, Macy’s, Arnstein & Lehr, Miami-Dade District One Commissioner Barbara J. C-One Special Announcement. Joint Funder & Nonprofit Symposium 3/26/09

UNCERTAIN ECONOMIC TIMES
A joint symposium for Miami-Dade nonprofits and funders

Due to recent budget cuts, the arts may no longer be a part of our children’s education in the state of Florida. At Artoconecto, we intend to step in and help fill the void, by offering students of all ages the opportunity to experience the arts outside of their schools. We are launching a program to take children on tours of artists’ and musicians’ studios in the Design District, Wynwood, Little Haiti, Little Havana, and other artist enclaves; as well as art galleries and music venues. We will be working with artists and musicians across the spectrum, and the children will get to experience art in its most inspiring forms. So please join us for a great evening of fun and entertainment for children and adults alike, while contributing to the future of the arts here in Miami. And FREE PONY RIDES!

Artoconecto is dedicated to its mission of building networks within the local arts community through its flagship nationally-juried show, ‘A-B(o)MB’ (Art Basel of Miami Beach), and through partnerships with local arts organizations like Bakehouse Art Complex, and, most recently, The Borscht Film Festival. Our mission includes hosting a series of events showcasing visual arts, theater, film, dance, and performance; which serve as an incentive tool for artists to submit their work for viewing by a mass audience. Each show is created in an eclectic atmosphere of absolute festivity, to celebrate the artists’ works without the confining structure, and often conservative culture, of many art galleries.

The Carol Jazzar Gallery is like no other. She has transformed her house, loft/garage, and expansive backyard (including swimming pool!) into a serene arts environment, while showcasing some of the best artists Miami has to offer, such as Jen Stark, Gismo Girls, and Guerra de la Paz-whose show, ‘Otherworld’, will be on display at the gallery through March. The gallery is located at 158 NW 91st St, Miami, FL.

About Mom-2-Mom 58 Foundation
The Mom-2-Mom 58 Foundation is a non-profit faith-based organization that was born out of the tragic death of the late Kansas City Chief linebacker Derrick Thomas on February 8, 2000. The founder, Mrs. Edith Morgan, suffered the sudden death of a beloved son whose vehicular accident could have been less tragic had he been wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. She felt a pressing need to get the word out to other mothers about the importance of training our children in the use of seat belts. She also realized shortly thereafter that there were other issues she wanted to address and other situations wherein she wanted to be of service, particularly to mothers and to children. The Mom-2-Mom 58 Foundation focuses on child safety and empowerment and other issues that can impact a mother’s life such as a family member with paralysis, adolescent obesity, juvenile delinquency, domestic violence, heath care, estate planning, etc.

Many people looked up to Derrick Thomas as a role model. He left a tremendous impact on people – even people who did not know him personally. He touched many lives while he was alive and the Mom-2-Mom 58 organization is trying to continue touching lives in his memory by concentrating on strengthening mothers and nurturing children.

Miami Light Project & Adrienne Arsht Center present Here & Now: 2009 3/5-7/09

Florida International Magazine says “Miami Light Project has been grooming future stars for years” and this year is no different as we continue our ground-breaking commissioning/presenting partnership with the Arsht Center. Here & Now yields an annual bounty of innovative, eye-opening new works; up-close-and-personal world premieres in the Studio Theater featuring some of Miami’s most promising emerging artists.

Elizabeth Doud & Jennylin Duany

Sipping Fury From a Tea Cup
Choreography, photographic studies of insects and the animal world, and an originally crafted musical sound-scape explore the mystery of the recent disappearance of bee colonies known as the Colony Collapse Disorder. Elizabeth Doud & Jennylin Duany direct a stage wide traffic jam of remote controlled cars and invite you to a very unique tea party in Sipping Fury From A Tea Cup.

Rosie Herrera

Various Stages of Drowning: A Cabaret
Choreographer Rosie Herrera recreates dream states through dance, theater, cabaret, opera and surrealism using water as a metaphor for the unconscious. Featuring a cast of 14 dancers, singers, bakers and drag queens and 10 birthday cakes that take you on a vivid journey through dreams and drowning.

Alexey Puig Taran

Symbol
From aerial dance and video-art to music, words and improvisation, Guggenheim dance fellow Alexey Puig Taran’s Symbol explores the boundaries of poetry where color, beauty, desire, and faith incorporate us into the cosmic order. Dancers fly, suspended from the ceiling as rain washes down on them in a vivid display of athletic grace.

“Marie Chouinard’s Rite of Spring is, in short, a masterpiece.”
– Pittsburgh Tribune Review
