URGENT: Save the Gusman Center

{A note from Soul Of Miami: this was forwarded to us by the Miami International Film Festival. We think it is important enough to post here for everyone to see. If you can help, please contact the Friends of the Gusman at the address below.}

An Urgent Appeal from The Friends of Gusman Center
Please forward to your friends

As you are aware, the Gusman Center has been informed that due to the City of Miami’s budget shortfall, the Theater may not receive funding from the City for the coming fiscal year. Without this financial support, after 84 years in our community, the Gusman’s doors could be forced to close permanently before the year is out.

As a City-owned facility, the Gusman relies on the City for approximately one-third of its operating budget. The remaining funds are generated by venue rentals; arts and historic preservation grants from the city, county and state; and generous donations from supporters like you. The Friends of Gusman remains committed to developing additional sources of funding and to implementing a sustainable operating structure for the Theater over the longer term.

Today, we urgently ask you to join us in calling on our Mayor and City Commission to recognize their commitment to maintain this unique cultural and historic landmark. Failure to provide for basic maintenance of the Theater, even in the short term, would likely result in irreparable damage to the building and undermine the successful restoration efforts that have been accomplished over the past decade.

Please help us advocate for the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts by taking the following urgent actions:

ATTEND THE CITY OF MIAMI BUDGET HEARINGS
SEPT. 14, 4:00 pm & SEPT. 27, 4:00 pm
City of Miami Commission Chambers
3500 Pan American Drive, Coconut Grove

Join the Friends of Gusman demonstrating your support IN PERSON at this critical juncture, at these two budget hearings for the 2010-2011 fiscal year.

T-shirts will be handed out to all those who come out in support. Please look for us at the entrance to City Hall. Call for more information: Daniella Sforza, 305-308-0802, or Robert Hernandez, 786-325-8093.

Starry Night Photography was created in late 2009. Her forte is capturing impromptu moments of time, moments of love, and moments of joy. She prefers to maintain her distance to capture natural shots, but will be happy to gently guide you when another angle or better light would be more dramatic or flattering. Her second goal is for you to have fun, because she feels pictures don’t turn out well if you’re not having a good time. Her love of natural lighting leads her to use outdoor and other on-location settings, and she chooses her shooting locations to best match your personality. Let Kris Starry of Starry Night Photography capture and preserve your emotions and memories on your special occasion for not only your lifetime, but for those of generations to come.

Duke University Exhibit Not Just Mad Men at Miami International University of Art and Design Opening Reception 8/25/10

Duke University Exhibit, Not Just Mad Men Travels to Miami International University of Art & Design in South Florida
August 25, 2010
panel discussion of The Advertising Evolution: 5:30pm
opening reception for the exhibit: 7pm.

Miami International University of Art & Design recently announced its upcoming exhibit, Not Just Mad Men, an exhibit on loan from the Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History of the Duke University Libraries in Durham, North Carolina. An event will be held on August 25, 2010 with a panel discussion of industry experts opening the evening with The Advertising Evolution, at 5:30pm followed by the opening reception for the exhibit at 7pm.

The Advertising Evolution panel features industry experts discussing the graphic design and advertising industry in the 60s and how it has evolved through time. Industry leaders include:
Bruce Turkel of Turkel Advertising
Barry Zaid formerly of Push Pin Studios
Arthur Rockower Graphic Design instructor
Jason Inasi of Factory Interactive
Marie Fernandez-Leon of Imagery Creative

After the panel discussion, the 60s themed opening reception will move into the University’s main gallery. The timely exhibit itself is a collaboration with Duke University featuring documents and ad campaigns from the early 60s along with the University’s own additions to the exhibit including program specific items. For example, graphic design students are creating 60s era posters of current products, fashion students are highlighting the fashions of that time period, film students will be showcasing looped commercials, movies and TV shows, advertising students will have a retrospective of the 60s with a Miami focus, etc. The exhibit offers guests a unique perspective of the 60s advertising industry with a twist.

“The Duke University collaboration is the culmination of a vision I had over a year ago when I learned of their exhibit – I am thrilled to be able to bring this exciting exhibit to the students, faculty and staff, yet also add our own elements and creative energy to it” says Marcia Gomez, director of communications for Miami International University of Art & Design. “We too are thrilled as it is the first time Duke University has a traveling exhibit,” Jacqueline Reid Wachholz, director for the Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History at Duke University.

The exhibit will be on display until September 30 at which time will travel to The Art Institute of Jacksonville and The Art Institute of Tampa, both branches of Miami International University of Art & Design.

Sponsors for the event include The Advertising Federation of Greater Miami, Ad2 Miami, DPR Printing, Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce Creative Industries Committee, Spuntino Catering and student organizations: Adfed MIU, MIU Fusion, MIU Multi-Major and AIGA MIU.

Team American Muscle, Save Salad Toss Pizza and Das Jorts, entertained the crowd as they launched their crafts to soar across the bay.  The winning team, Team Formula Flug from Palm Beach Gardens, FL, flew more than 50 feet and their craft stayed in one piece.  All of the entries were awesome, and some were very creative.  They claim over 100,000 attendees and I believe it, so many people and so many boats it was amazing.  Can’t wait for next time, I might just have to come up with an idea and try out….GO RED BULL!!!

RED BULL FLUGTAG BRINGS THE HEAT TO MIAMI
More than 85,000 Spectators Cheered as 35 Teams Unsuccessfully Defied Gravity at Bayfront Park

MIAMI – July 10, 2010 – Miami residents probably thought they had it all after LeBron James announced his decision to play for The HEAT this week, but good things just keep coming to this city as more than 85,000 people made their way to Bayfront Park for Red Bull Flugtag Miami. An event for the young and the young at heart, Red Bull Flugtag is all about the attempt at human flight… and ultimately taking a swim in Biscayne Bay. Judged on distance, creativity, and showmanship, it was team Formula Flug from Palm Beach Gardens, FL who took the top spot with their winged Formula One race car.

“It feels spectacular to win!” said team Formula Flug’s pilot Daniel Bazzani. He and his teammates soared a whopping 54 feet (the furthest for the day) and will get the chance to hang out with Red Bull Air Race World Champion, Kirby Chambliss, at his “Flying Crown Ranch” in Arizona. “Kirby Chambliss rocks! We’re all pilots and love watching him fly!” In second place were University of Miami classmates, Ibis Engineers, with their school mascot flying machine and in third with their NASA space satellite vessel was One Giant Leap from Boston, MA.

BRING THE HEAT
A total of 35 teams comprised of their own “dream teams” showed off their creativity to impress the crowd in their attempt to grab 15 minutes of fame. A “Three Kings” slam dunk craft took flight to celebrate the signing of James, Wade and Bosh, and gave the crowd the extra energy they needed to withstand the record HEAT.

“Today was absolutely amazing!” said Miami HEAT’s DJ Irie. “I thought it was going to be impossible to beat last time but they did it.” Joining him on the judges stand were Red Bull pilots Kirby Chambliss and Chuck Aaron with Red Bull Air Force “skyaker” Miles Daisher who described the day as, “…beautiful with lots of smiling faces, hot bods, and fellow Flugtaggers who had an awesome time out here!” Co-host for Y100’s Michael Yo Show, Ninalicia Osorio, model and actress, Patricia De Leon, and local artist David “Lebo” Batard also casted their score cards to rate the team’s attempt at glory. Nearly 10,000 fans casted their vote for “People’s Choice,” but it was Team Transplace who won over the hearts of the crowd.

COME FLY WITH ME
Miami kicked off the first stop on the 2010 Red Bull Flugtag North American tour. Next on our list is Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN on July 24th before heading to Long Beach, CA and ultimately wrapping things up in Philadelphia, PA. Teams from each stop will be featured in a reality series titled “On the Wings of Glory,” which will debut on Sunday, September 5th after Marlins baseball on FOX Sports Florida.

The first Red Bull Flugtag took place in Vienna, Austria, in 1991. Since then, more than 40 Red Bull Flugtags have been held around the world from Ireland to San Francisco. The record for the farthest flight to date currently stands at 195 feet set in 2000 at Red Bull Flugtag Austria. The U.S. record stands at 155 feet set at Red Bull Flugtag Nashville in 2008.

Prometeo Theatre to Stage the World Premiere of Oliver Mayer Spanish version of Filo Al Fuego 7/9-17/10

Prometeo Theatre To Stage The World Premiere Of Oliver Mayer’s Spanish Version Of “Filo Al Fuego”

Tickets available at www.prometeotheatre.com

Prometeo Theatre part of the Florida Center for the Literary Arts at Miami Dade College (MDC) will present the premiere of a Spanish version of “Filo al Fuego” (“Blade to the Heat”) by Mexican-American playwright, Oliver Mayer. Author of more than 20 plays, Mayer is the winner of the Zumberge Individual Award and an Associate Professor of Dramatic Writing at the University of Southern California School of Theatre.

Prometeo’s Artistic Director, Joann Maria Yarrow, directs this world premiere. “We have been blessed to be able have the assistance of amazing trainers who have been working with our actors.” Yarrow noted. “The play is set in Miami and the world of boxing in 1962. Revolt, refugees and world champs bang around this town like nobody’s business; a hotbed of political activity and a Mecca for the sport at the time,”

“Filo al Fuego” is about the essentiality of finding yourself, identifying yourself independent of the way others might identify you,” says playwright Oliver Mayer. “It’s funny that the play remains so edgy and advanced in terms of its portrayal of gay characters.” Filo al Fuego is not for the faint-hearted. It deals with sexuality, race and ethnicity without pulling any punches; it dives head first into territory that others either tread lightly or avoid entirely.

His original and highly controversial hit play Blade to the Heat, on which this new adaptation is based, premiered at the New York Public Theatre in 1994, followed by a revised version at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles. It has since played in many other venues and cities including Chicago, San Francisco and Mexico City — where it played 100 performances, earning a plaque at the renowned Teatro Lírico.

“Filo al Fuego of course shares the story, pace and theme with Blade to the Heat, but something about the work we did [for this adaptation] makes it more than a simple translation,” Mayer said. “The very terrain and temperature of South Florida has invaded the play in sexy and sultry ways.”

The performance is part of the XXV International Hispanic Theatre Festival, presented by Teatro Avante and American Airlines.

Red Bull Flugtag Miami 7/10/10

Bayfront Park
July 10, 2010
Gates open: 10:00AM
First Flight: 12:00PM
Last Flight: 2:30PM
No tickets required. Red Bull Flugtag is a free event and open to the public.

Red Bull Flugtag, which means “flying day” in German, is a competition that dares both the brave and the brainy to design, build and pilot homemade flying machines off a 30-foot high ramp in hopes of achieving human-powered flight. But don’t be fooled – this is no ordinary flying competition. While distance is important, creativity and showmanship are necessary to impress the judges. These criteria have inspired such outrageous crafts as a sky-high Popemobile, an airborne outhouse, a flying fire engine, and even a replica of Santa and his sleigh to test their wings at Red Bull Flugtag.

RED BULL FLUGTAG MIAMI FLIGHT MANIFESTO COMPLETE
38 Teams to Take the Plunge into Biscayne Bay on July 10 th at Bayfront Park

MIAMI – May 6, 2010 – Teams from across the east coast look to defy gravity with their human-powered flying machines on July 10th at Red Bull Flugtag Miami. After reviewing more than 270 applications, 38 teams received their boarding passes to participate in the outrageous flying competition hosted at Bayfront Park. Selected flyers like Team American Muscle, Save Salad Toss Pizza and Das Jorts, will entertain the crowd as they launch their crafts with hopes of soaring across the bay.

If your German is a bit rusty, Flugtag means “flying day.” Each team of daredevils will launch from 30 feet above Biscayne Bay at Bayfront Park and attempt to take flight in their homemade crafts. The panel of celebrity judges will take three criteria into account in deciding who makes the podium: distance flown, creativity of the craft and the team’s showmanship on stage. Spectators will also have the opportunity to chime in for their favorite team via SMS voting to select the People’s Choice.

JAMAICAN BOBSLED, RUBBER DUCKY

Red Bull Flugtag Miami will have 38 outrageous crafts, ranging from flying squirrels, a giant guitar and a three tiered wedding cake topped with a bride and groom, built by participants ranging from pilots to engineering students and animators to roller derby girls. Each team of five will need to bring out their inner stuntman and sheer silliness in order to make a splash against a wide array of talent.

While the sky may be the limit on creativity, there are still a few flight regulations. First off, all flying machines must be entirely human-powered (no external energy sources or stored power, so forget about the slingshots, catapults or anything besides your own burliness). Second, no matter what they say, size does matter – all crafts must be less than 30 feet wide and must weigh no more than 450 lbs. (including the pilot).

PREPARE FOR TAKE OFF

For Flugtag novices, the first Red Bull Flugtag took off in Vienna, Austria in 1991 and has since visited more than 30 countries around the world attracting crowds of up to 300,000. Currently, 195 feet stands as the farthest flight which was set back in 2000 in Austria, but the US isn’t far behind with a record of 155 feet set in 2007 in Nashville, Tenn.! Miami will host the first 2010 Red Bull Flugtag in the US followed by the Twin Cities, MN, Long Beach, CA and Philadelphia, PA.

Red Bull Flugtag is a free event and open to the public. Gates open at 10:00am and the first craft launches for flight at 12:00pm.

Derek Buckner
June 24 – September 26, 2010
Main Library, 1st floor exhibition space
New York artist Derek Buckner works obsessively on series of paintings in which he takes on a specific subject (highway, truck, landscape), shown from a birds’ eye perspective, and explores its variation on a theme. This exhibition features one of Buckner’s latest series of oil paintings portraying images of UFOs as the dominant feature; depictions of the cityscape, buildings, and the earth are implied rather than a central figure. The dreamy yet haunting works explore the poetics of the unfamiliar and accentuate the ambiguity and psychological impact of the unknown.

Derek Buckner grew up in Brooklyn, New York. He went on to study at Vassar College and received his B.F.A. from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He has exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Italy, Mexico, East Hampton, and Sante Fe. His work is in numerous private and corporate collections in this country and abroad. This is his first solo exhibition in Miami, Fl.

Exhibition Provides a Glimpse into Studios and Minds of Miami’s Art Community
With New and Never-Before-Seen Works by Miami-based Artists

June 10, 2010 – MIAMI – Miami Art Museum, a modern and contemporary art museum located in downtown Miami, FL, will provide a partial snapshot of the Miami art scene at this moment with New Work Miami, opening Sunday, July 18, 2010 and closing on Sunday, October 17, 2010. This Miami Art Museum-organized exhibition is conceived as an exuberant salute to Miami’s artistic community, which is bursting with dynamism and sophisticated artistic points of view.

Approximately 35 artists based in the Miami area will present new and recent artworks executed in a variety of media including painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, video, environmental installation and performance. The bulk of the exhibition will be presented in Miami Art Museum’s recently unified 5,000 sq. ft. Plaza Level Gallery, with numerous performances, events and screenings to be presented throughout the exhibition’s run.

“The aim is to connect Miami Art Museum’s broad audience – which includes a full spectrum of Miami’s population, from avid art followers to the general public – with the exciting and innovative artistic developments unfolding right in our backyard,” said Peter Boswell, MAM assistant director for programs/senior curator. “Nearly every aspect of the production, from the gallery notes, to the title wall, to the sounds in the elevator, will be created by artists in an effort to activate the museum artistically as much as possible.”

Many of the artists are creating works for the exhibition that reach beyond the museum walls, including the Talking Head Transmitters, who will broadcast interviews with both scheduled guests and walk-in MAM visitors over live AM radio. On the lobby monitors, a video artwork by Tatiana Vahan, which depicts scenes from the artist’s childhood embodying a typical, middle-class American family, intermittently interrupted by real TV commercials. Gean Moreno and Ernesto Oroza will turn the exhibition’s gallery notes from a traditional museum brochure format to a tabloid newspaper that will be distributed at various public locations throughout the city. Other artworks will challenge visitors’ perceptions, such as Don Lambert’s Flatland, a large sculpture with rapidly spinning circles that create the illusion of a vortex-like dept, and an optical phenomenon of suggested color. Felecia Chizuko Carlisle will return regularly throughout the run of the show to continue transforming the installation of “Sketches” in space.

“More than ever the key to participating in global cultural conversations is to speak from within one’s local conditions,” says René Morales, MAM associate curator and co-organizer of the exhibition. “In Miami, we have a richly textured artistic community, one that is increasingly able to make strong and internationally relevant contributions.”

The exhibition will provide a glimpse into the studios and minds of the artists working in Miami. In addition, it will identify and clarify to Miami Art Museum’s audiences various broad patterns in local artistic production. For example, several of the artists in the exhibition focus on aspects of urban life that exist just below the surface of what we observe from day to day, while others focus on developing new approaches to traditional artistic conventions. Among the artists whose work is presented in the gallery space are Kevin Arrow, Felecia Chizuko Carlisle, Jim Drain, Lynne Golob Gelfman, Michael Genovese, Jacin Giordano, Guerra de la Paz, Adler Guerrier, Don Lambert, Gustavo Matamoros, Beatriz Monteavaro, Gean Moreno/Ernesto Oroza, Peggy Nolan, Fabian Peña, Christina Pettersson, Vickie Pierre, Manny Prieres, Christopher Stetser, Talking Head Transmitters, Robert Thiele, Mette Tommerup, Frances Trombly, Tatiana Vahan, Marcos Valella, Viking Funeral and Michelle Weinberg.

In line with Miami Art Museum’s commitment to community outreach and education, the exhibition will be supplemented with special performance events, artist talks and interactive programs throughout the course of the project. To receive event invitations and reminders, visit miamiartmuseum.org.

New Work Miami is organized by Miami Art Museum and is supported by donations to MAM’s Annual Exhibition Fund. It is curated by Peter Boswell, assistant director for programs/senior curator, and René Morales, associate curator.

Miami Art Museum serves one of the most diverse and fast-growing regions of the country, where a confluence of North and Latin American cultures adds vibrancy and texture to the civic landscape. MAM embraces its role as a cultural anchor and touchstone in a city that welcomes countless ethnic and age groups, lifestyles and ideas. MAM’s far-ranging vision is expressed in the breadth and depth of its exhibition program, and its ambitious education and public programs. The Museum continues to build its collection of holdings from the twentieth century through the present, as it embarks on a major new building and expansion project. The new MAM designed by Herzog & de Meuron will open in downtown Miami’s Museum Park in 2013.

Annette Recommends Broadsword at the Carnival Studio Theater

Went to see Broadsword at the Carnival Studio at the Adrienne Arsht Center on Saturday, May 1st.  This was an awesome show! The acting, the writing and the music were all really good.  This being at the Carnival Studio it is very intimate and you really feel like you are in the basement with the actors, like you are peeking on a little bit of their life.  The final music performance is awesome,  I really wished I had a lighter to wave for an encore.  If you have an free evening this week I would suggest heading over to the Arsht Center and seeing Broadsword, this is one you don’t want to miss.

Broadsword will run Sunday, May 2nd, and then Thursday – Sunday, May 6th – 9th (two shows on Saturday).

Photographs of Johnnie Walker Tasting at The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts on 4/8/10

Johnnie Walker Tasting at The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday, April 8, 2010.  I had so much fun, the food was amazing.  They had cheese, hummus, fruit and bread setup outside and then they where passing around hot food, the spring roll was my favorite.  They had a really good crowd very boisterous during the presentation, it was a lot of fun.  And of course the whiskey was really good, my favorite was the Red Lablel, but we got to taste, Black, Red, Green, Gold and Blue Labels, all i got to say is we had an awesome time. La Dama Macbeth by La Tati and Miguel Canas with Ballet Flamenco La Rosa 5/1/10

Ballet Flamenco La Rosa, an international Flamenco company based in Miami, is pleased to announce the world premiere of La Dama Macbeth, a flamenco Ballet inspired by the great Shakespearian Tragedy Macbeth. Ballet Flamenco La Rosa brings to life the classic themes of ambition, passion, loyalty, betrayal, rivalry, righteousness and greed, using Flamenco as a language to interpret the characters and relationships in this great play.

This production will incorporate live music, created and arranged by guest guitarists and singers from Spain in collaboration with company dancers and choreographers. Artists from the U.S, Latin America and Spain, led by the world renowned master teacher, choreographer and soloist La Tati in the title role, and with one of Spain’s most sought after male dancers, Miguel Cañas, as Macbeth, bring to this production the spellbinding and earthy power of Flamenco dance at its best. With its spectacular footwork, precise athleticism and vibrant energy, Flamenco is at once sensual and spiritual, raw and refined, and filled with both restrained passion and electrifying release, making it a powerful language to interpret this timeless work.Under the direction of Ilisa Rosal, a stellar cast of international artists will create the characters of Shakespeare’s drama.

The production will debut on Saturday May 1 at the Gusman Center for The Performing Arts 174 E Flagler St. Miami, Fl. at 8:00 pm as part of the Miami Dance Festival.

Ballet Flamenco La Rosa, also known as La Rosa Flamenco Theatre, is a professional company dedicated to Flamenco as an ever-evolving art form. The innovative and creative dancers of Ballet Flamenco La Rosa present Flamenco dance in a theatrical setting, expanding the art form beyond traditional limits to reach and enlighten students and audiences with its beauty and magic. A Miami based non-profit dance company, Ballet Flamenco La Rosa Flamenco has performed to sell out crowds and received critical acclaim in both the artistic mainstream and in the “Tablaos” (Flamenco Clubs) of Little Havana since 1985. Since then, the company has grown to a National and International reputation, with its pure Flamenco works, cutting edge cross- cultural collaborations and ground breaking dramatic Flamenco Ballets. Gustavo Matamoros, experimental composer, sound artist, artistic director of isaw / Subtropics

The Reading Room, March 2010
Left to itself art would have to be something very simple – it would be sufficient for it to be beautiful. But when it’s useful it should spill out of just being beautiful and move over to other aspects of life so that when we’re not with the art it has nevertheless influenced our actions or our responses. – John Cage, from “The Aesthetics of John Cage: A Composite Interview,” 1987
John Cage made you realize that there wasn’t a thing called noise, it was just music you hadn’t appreciated. – Brian Eno
Safeness lurks wherever we turn… Show me dangerous music. – Lukas Foss
(all quotes from www.subtropics.org)
On the second Friday of each month, a secret room in the Children’s Room at the Main Library becomes The Reading Room. In this cozy space, visitors can stop by any time between 12 and 2pm to get up close and personal with selections from the Library’s collection of artists’ books, publications and multiples. Experience these objects without having to look at them through a display case, engage in conversation over coffee and cookies, and see living-room style screenings of video and new media art (usually).
This installment of The Reading Room promises both discussion and activity. We’ll talk about a new project up right now at Sunny Isles Branch Library: In Parentheses – A Collaborative Site-Specific Installation by Adalberto Delgado and Maria I. Amores. In Parentheses uses video, sculpture and sound to explore the relationship between the interpretation of symbols and their meaning in language. And Gustavo Matamoros of will temporarily turn the space into an immersive environment in which to demonstrate the interdisciplinary nature of sound.

Talking About the World through Gullah/Geechee Culture with Cain Hope Felder, Ralph Johnson, Peter London, Noelle Theard 3/25/10

De Word Spoken Amungst We:
Talking About the World through Gullah/Geechee Culture
In conjunction with the exhibition
Gullah Geechee and the 7 Dreams: A project of Gary L. Moore
Thursday, March 25, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
2nd floor exhibition space, Main Library, 101 W. Flagler Street, Miami – 305.375.2665
We invite you to be part of a community discussion about the questions raised by the exhibition Gullah Geechee and the 7 Dreams. A multidisciplinary panel of practitioners will get us talking. They include:
Ralph B. Johnson, founding member of the Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission; Professor, Florida Atlantic University School of Architecture and Director, FAU Center for the Conservation of Architectural and Cultural Heritage
Cain Hope Felder, co-author and editor of the Original African Heritage Study Bible; professor of New Testament Language and Literature at the School of Divinity, Howard University
Peter London, associate professor of dance, New World School of the Arts; visiting Artistic Director Senior for The Martha Graham Dance Company; and faculty member, Alvin Ailey summer intensive program
Noelle Theard, independent photographer and documentarian
For Gullah Geechee and the 7 Dreams, artist Gary L. Moore curated an exhibition based on his perceptions of the Gullah/Geechee culture of his childhood in Pee Dee, South Carolina. The show includes his own sculptural and site-specific work, historical objects and artifacts from private collections, art from the Library System’s Permanent Art Collection, and rare books from the Florida Collection. The project makes aesthetic and metaphysical connections between folk culture, spirituality, histories of slavery and revolution, handmade aesthetics, and contemporary art. The 7 dreams of the exhibition’s title refer to seven ways the culture has survived, manifested itself and is part of the history of post-slavery African-American culture.
As part of the discussion, we might ask: How do folk cultures, languages and religions continue to be relevant? How does the impact of the encroaching tourist industry on the culture of the Sea Islands relate to development and gentrification in an urban area like Miami? How does this traditional African-American culture relate to contemporary Caribbean art and culture in Miami? Rather than a traditional panel discussion in which a group of “experts” speaks to a passive public, each member of the panel will work with a small group of audience members. At the end of the evening all of the groups will come back together as a whole to share their ideas.

This project has been funded through a grant from the Alternate ROOTS Community Artist/Partnership Program, with support from the Nathan Cummings Foundation and the Ford Foundation.

Local Film Maker Debuts Never Winter For Night Of Hope During The Miami International Film Festival 3/9/10

LOCAL FILM MAKER DEBUTS NEVER WINTER FOR “NIGHT OF HOPE”
DURING THE MIAMI INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

Live auction featuring works by artist Romero Britto to benefit Honey Shine Mentoring Program

Writer/Director/Producer Moe Charif is pleased to announce the world premier of his latest cinematic endeavor at the “Night of Hope” film screening during the 2010 Miami International Film Festival. The red carpet event at the historic Gusman Center in Downtown Miami, held in conjunction with Honey Shine Mentoring Program, a program of Alonzo Mourning Charities and Miami Children’s Hospital, will serve to raise awareness against child abuse. Charif will be leading off the night with the short drama Never Winter, based on a true story, which follows eleven year-old Chloe Hammond as she deals with the struggles of life with a drug addict and abusive mother. After her plan of escape backfires, Hammond’s only hope is to turn to her school counselor for a chance at a better life. Never Winter is Charif’s follow up piece to the 2005 award-winning action thriller Hunted.

The second showing of the evening will be preceded by a live auction with donated works by renowned artist Romero Britto. Featured items include a signed replica of the Hyde Park sculpture he created in London in 2007; in addition to his book Colors Around the World. Proceeds will benefit Honey Shine Mentoring Program.

Closing out the evening is A Step from Heaven, an inspirational documentary by Mexican director Vidal Canto which includes notable cast members Gloria & Emilio Estefan and Romero Britto. The piece follows quadriplegic Juan Angel Ruiz, a car accident victim turned motivational speaker on his quest to spread his message of inner happiness.

Post-event festivities will commence immediately following the screening as burgeoning Wynwood outpost Cafeina hosts the official “Night of Hope” after party. The multi-room resto-lounge-meets-art gallery featuring a lush outdoor garden is located at 297 NW 23 Street and will kick-off the celebration with complimentary Pisco cocktails and international tapas by executive chef Guily Booth.

About Moe Charif:
A film buff at heart, Moe Charif graduated from University of Florida with a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts. Charif began his artistic career in 2003 with small photography projects before directing the short film action-thriller The Hunted in 2005, which was screened at over eighteen film festivals worldwide. Currently Charif has teamed up with acclaimed Hollywood movie producer Steve McEveety, in addition to friend and colleague Omar Chavez Jr., to realize his latest project Exile.

Honey Shine Mentoring Program Mission Statement: Honey Shine encourages the balance of mind, body and soul in girls and women by providing nurturing experiences that enlighten their paths and empower their future.

Writing Workshop at Wallflower Gallery 3/16/10

Bring a friend and a notebook!
Tired of trying to be fabulous on a Tuesday night in South Beach?
How about something obtuse and not glamorous?

The Miami Writers, a group of emerging poets, novelists, screenwriters, bloggers and politicians (ha ha, just checking to see if you’re paying attention), are hosting an interactive writing and critique session at The Wallflower Gallery in downtown Miami on Tuesday, March 16 starting at 7pm.

What do you get out of this, exactly? Everyone’s got somethin’ to dish, and it all starts with writing a few words on paper. But then what? So often, the journals and electronic files go nowhere, and your dreams of becoming a writer never manifest.

Put an end to the procrastination while discovering a fun way to share and get feedback within a safe environment of like-minded people. Having an audience that wants to support you rather than heckle you off the stage is the first step to taking your creativity from just an idea to reality.

The way it works: This is a workshop for beginners. We will start with a warm-up of on-the-spot writing by giving you prompts. Then, in the second half of the workshop, you can share what you wrote and/or just give feedback to others. You may also bring writing from home – we especially like second or third drafts of work (since the first draft is often just a journal entry).

$10/person

About the Miami Writers
http://www.miamiwriters.com
In 2006, Alejandra Fernandez, Melanie Feliciano, Claudia Forestieri, Tennille Martinez and Ruben Soto got together at Azucar para el espiritu, a small spiritual bookstore located on Calle 8 to talk about their dreams as aspiring writers. They pooled all their skills and creative energy to organize Write-Ins, Critique Sessions, Spoken Word & Literary Reading Nights, the Write Out Loud Tent at Miami Book Fair International, Author Panels on publishing, a writers retreat at The Standard Hotel and a literary exhibition at Art Basel 2009. Since then, Angello Pizarro became the “communications ninja” for the group, managing 400+ Facebook members, and Jose Javier Rodriguez serves as the group’s soul searcher.

About the Wallflower Gallery
http://www.wallflowergallery.com
In the heart of Downtown Miami, The Wallflower Gallery is a multi-media arts and community facility that features a diverse selection of creative formats. As part of The Local Art Experience, The Wallflower Gallery highlights various presentations that showcase emerging and established talents – with most of the artists being from South Florida.

Within The Wallflower Gallery, there is an assortment of visual arts including paintings, photography, digital images and sculptures. In addition, there is a selection of interactive showcases that feature spoken word, dance, theatre, comedy and most diverse arrangement of musical styles in South Florida. The Wallflower Gallery also presents an independent film series that includes shorts, features & documentaries.

Carlos Cruz Diez: The Embodied Experience of Color explores the artist’s pioneering contribution to experimental practices with color and perceptual structures in the 1960s and 1970s that proposed new definitions for the art work as a field of participation. Un_Mute Presents He Said, She Said Tour 2010 at Parkwest Nightclub 2/5/10

This Friday, February 5th, for one night only, Parkwest Nightclub opens it’s doors to host the Miami stop of “He Said She Said” tour brought to you by Un-Mute, featuring two of dance music’s most innovative artists, Alexi Delano and Camea for over 10 hours of non-stop madness.
A veteran of the global dance scene, Alexi Delano has been tearing up dancefloors for over two decades now. This Chilean-born, Swedish-raised studio perfectionist was part of the first wave of Swedish techno producers to originate of out that country in the early 1990s, including Adam Beyer and Joel Mull. With dancefloor devastators such as “Would You?”, the acid house classic “Believe Me”, and recent fave “Echolocation” (released on Richie Hawtin’s Plus 8 imprint), Alexi’s sound bridges the sometimes vast gap between the worlds of house and techno.
Starting her musical career as a classically-trained pianist and clarinet player, Camea, described as a fusion of “Seattle cool and Brooklyn edge” has been taking the techno and dance world by storm. From small, underground clubs to crowds numbering in thousands, Camea is recognized for her intelligent, fun music selection and outgoing stage presence, which has earned her a valuable reputation worldwide. She is known for her extended DJ sets, sometimes playing up to 8 hours or more, a rare thing these days. As head of her own label, Clink Recordings, Camea’s productions, such as the hit, “Voiding The Fill”, have found their way into the bags and laptops of Richie Hawtin, Magda, Loco Dice, Pan-Pot and many others.
Joining these two titans this evening will be local stars Dsan Powell, Mario Liberti, and Tuki Romero. Doors open at 10 PM sharp.

The Wallflower Gallery Organizational Meeting – We Need To Move 2/1/10

From Flash at Wallflower Gallery
The Wallflower Gallery Organizational Meeting 02-01-10
WE NEED TO MOVE

Hello, Everybody, how’s it going? I wanted to reach out and see what we can do together to save and revitalize The Wallflower Gallery. This is a group project, so if we want to have an artistic and creative community space in Miami, The Wallflower Gallery can be that platform.

I was recently informed by the landlord that he plans to tear down the building as soon as possible – he mentioned April, but I think we can delay it if we can get some money to him. This money will buy us the time to transition smoothly.

For almost 13 years, The Wallflower Gallery has stood as a place for musicians to play, for poets to share their poems, for visual artists to display their pieces, for independent film makers to showcase films and videos, for actors to act, as well as host a larger assortment of creative showcases. In addition, we have worked with a variety of community organizations to help with local issues, programs for young people, alternative transportation, animal rights, environmental causes, marijuana laws reform, secular humanism, electoral campaigns and many other causes. Even now as we are struggling to keep the business alive, we are giving support to the people of Haiti and we have hosted a collection event – overall it is about compassion. Now it is time to focus a campaign on The Wallflower Gallery.

I am calling for an Organizational Meeting on Monday, February 1 – 7:00 p.m. to discuss what we can do to bring ideas together. I will lay out the details of the situation and see what we as a group can do with suggestions. Bring your cash, checkbooks and credit cards to contribute some financial support. Donations can also go through PayPal on our website – www.wallflowergallery.com – other information will be posted there as well. If we don’t get the financial resources to make this happen, it won’t work.

Now the large task at hand is to generate money to cover the expenses in the current location and find a new location that will have to be set up to meet the needs of the business. In addition, there needs to be an accounting of the inventory and make sure that the items get back to the various artists and any balances due are covered.

I would like to take this opportunity to change the current dynamics. We need to create an active Board of Directors who can work together to organize the various aspects of The Wallflower Gallery and establish a better system to manage the whole operation. Part of this includes establishing a non-profit organization to work with tax-deductible donations.

The Wallflower Gallery brings to the table a strong talent base, a hefty database of connections, a good reputation, lots of experience and a kick-ass sound system. This is the starting point for the new phase of The Wallflower Gallery.

If The Wallflower Gallery fades, there is not another business of its kind waiting in the wings. We are not a simple CD store, art gallery, coffee shop or venue. We are more than those elements and as a community center we have always reached out to younger people to include them and feature their talents.

We have had people from all over the world come to The Wallflower Gallery and remark how unique and cozy the space is. People are always saying that there is nothing in Miami like it. At the same time, they wish they had a place like this where they lived.

This is our opportunity to come together and make something happen that will enrich our community in many ways. We are here to represent South Florida and our creative and progressive spirits, so let’s make it happen!

Let’s see what we can do together. More information will follow.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
Thank you for your effort.
PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD & GET OTHERS INVOLVED
Hope all’s well.
Enjoy

Haiti Mizik Relief Concert at Bayfront Park 100% Proceeds to American Red Cross 1/23-24/10

South Florida’s Music Community Responds to the Haiti Crisis with the “Haiti Mizik Relief” Concert at Bayfront Park
Saturday, January 23rd & Sunday, January 24th

100% of donations will go to The American Red Cross for relief of the earthquake-devastated country.

A group of event producers, musicians, community leaders and activists have leveraged their network to quickly organize a 2-day Haiti Mizik Relief Concert at Bayfront Park’s Tina Hills Pavilion on Saturday, January 23rd from 4pm-10pm and Sunday, January 24th from 2pm-8pm . The 100% benefit concert will collect a suggested $10 minimum donation at the door with all proceeds going directly to The American Red Cross for the immediate relief needs of Haiti. The benefit concert offers Miamians a chance to be together, listen to great music and raise desperately needed aid.
Miami’s community and the world have felt a deep sense of responsibility and urgency to donate their money, time and talent in the wake of the Haiti tragedy. Sadly, the concert lineup includes musicians who have been personally affected by the tragedy losing close relatives and waiting desperately to connect with loved ones in the devastated island nation.

The Haiti Mizik Relief Concert will musically mirror the diverse rhythms of Miami’s music community, featuring a plethora of Miami-based top Haitian, Latin Funk and World Music groups. Confirmed to appear are legendary Haitian Tuco Bouzi & Dixie Band performing along with Kapi & Yves Abel of Tabou Combo, Fredy of Top Vice, Jacky Ambroise of Strings, Ralph Conde of Nu-Look. Jan Sebon & Kazak International, Locos Por Juana, DJ Le Spam and The Spam All Stars, Rara Rock, Empress Addi & The Breeze, Jean P Jam, Papaloko & Lolay Mistik, Suénalo, Afrobeta, Conjunto Progreso, Jahfe, and DJ Pauer. Key leaders of both the Haitian and Miami community are also scheduled to appear.

The Haiti Mizik Relief Concert is produced on a not for profit/volunteer basis by The Rhythm Foundation and La Juana Productions, working closely with a group of musicians, artists and producers. Community support has been instantaneous and includes Epiphone, who has generously donated an Epiphone guitar that will be raffled off at the event and Bevinco of Miami has stepped in to provide for production needs. The Knight Foundation has also agreed to match donations up to $5,000. Media partners Miami New Times and WDNA 88.9FM have also agreed to sponsor the benefit concert.

Kraft
“Trees give us shade, fruit, flowers, medicine, oxygen… and paper. We were asking ourselves where the soul of a tree converted into paper could be hiding. One thing occurred to us: make the folds sing. This gave us some sounds that led us to notes for a primary musical scale, the tone of which, once unfolded, magically rebuilt the rustling of the leaves in the trees, the murmur of waves on the seashore, the crackle of fire or the thunder of a summer storm. No longer can we put off the need for a playful and vital spectacle that will simply deal with our love for things and people. Quite simply, letting us move on, without artifice or ambiguities without great pretensions. And that is what gave rise to Kraft, like a primary idea, like a kid’s thought, by pilling up paper and cardboard for a big game”.

eMERGE trade show is having its 1st annual event, which will be held in Miami, Florida on April 27 and 28th, 2010. The show will be held at the beautiful Hilton Miami Downtown, overlooking the intracoastal waterways and downtown Miami. eMERGE targets retailers that are in search of for the hottest apparel and clothing companies an outlet for the world to view their artwork.

eMERGE is an innovative fashion trade show for upcoming and emerging brands, to showcase their collections to the best boutiques and retailers. Most conventional trade shows do not focus their attention on independent companies that are yearning for exposure in the fashion market. eMERGE is here to assist these brands in growing their business to become the next big “IT” FACTOR. Brands attending eMERGE are breaking barriers and aren’t afraid to take risks to be a recognizable force in the market, and therefore, they will….”ARISE AND CONQUER”

Founded by two individuals who understand and have been in the same position as the brands that will attend eMERGE, so they understand their positions and know that they want to prosper if given the opportunity to do so. One of the founders runs a clothing company and knows how much is needed to run an effective brand. Constantly being put in a position to come up with obscene amounts of funds that was unobtainable to gain exposure. eMERGE will allow clothing companies to showcase their goods in a Metropolitan city for a low, cost effective price. Retailers will be introduced to brands that are usually overlooked at major trade shows. eMERGE will give them both a platform to meet in order to grow their businesses; to bring what is hidden into plain view.

eMERGE is pleased to announce that a portion of all proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society and Kids off Streets.

New Years Eve at Space Miami 12/31/09

Space Miami is proud to celebrate their 10th New Year’s Eve Celebration, Thursday, December 31st.
As its has become the tradition, we will present a stellar lineup of your favorite local DJ talent, with music by Oscar G, Patrick M, Louis Puig, Lazardi, Maurizio + Danyelino, Dsan Powell, Radamas, Knowledge and Meta4 all night (and morning!) long. As in other years and in keeping with our tradition of giving back to our loyal customers, this will be the least expensive pre-sale ticket in town, starting as low as $25.00 with Open Bar before 12am (Online Only)… It’s is our of way of saying thanks for another year of your loyalty and support! As a last-minute addition to the madness, we are proud to welcome Germany’s own Martin Buttrich for a true live performance in the Techno Loft. Ever the accomplished studio wizard, he’s produced pop (The Sugarbabes), Italo house (Sounds of Life) and progressive (over one hundred collaborations with Timo Maas). He’s even been nominated for a Grammy (remixing Tori Amos ‘Don’t Make Me Come to Vegas’). But it wasn’t until 2006 that Buttrich came to prominence under his own name, releasing 12”s on Four:Twenty, Poker Flat and Carl Craig‘s Planet-E (‘Full Clip’). As of late, Martin has been deep in the studio with fellow German and recent devastator of the Terrace, Loco Dice.
Patrons will also enjoy a complimentary open bar from 10 PM until the ball drops at midnight… Ring in the New Year in style as Space roars into it’s tenth year of operation as the US’s number one dance music club! Buy your tickets now! For Tickets or VIP Tables click below:

Description:

The Food for Life Network (FFLN) AIDS Marathon/Half-Marathon was founded in 2008. The marathon seeks to raise HIV/AIDS awareness in the South Florida community and beyond while simultaneously raising money for Food for Life Network, Inc.

Food for Life Network, Inc. is a 503[c](3) non-profit organization that provides groceries, meals and nutritional education to eliminate malnutrition and starvation in men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS in Miami-Dade County. They are committed to delivering services with compassion and confidentiality, to fostering clients’ dignity and independence, and to enhancing clients’ quality of life.  Since 1987, Food for Life Network, Inc. staff and its volunteers have provided over 1.5 million meals and groceries to people living with HIV/AIDS at no cost to their clients. FFLN is a part of Community AIDS Resource, Inc. (aka “Care Resource”).

Because FFLN, Inc. never charges its clients for their services and because the services we provide are so crucial, we look to socially responsible individuals, businesses, and community leaders like you for help You may not know it, but for as little as $40.00, you can help to feed one homebound client for a week or provide 21 meals for one food bank client. The larger the donation, the greater good we can do. FFLN, Inc. provides other services in addition to its meals on wheels program. For example, FFLN, Inc. clients have access to dieticians and nutritionists. Available services include a BIA testing for muscle mass, fat and water in the tissue, and an individual health eating habit survey. These assessments help FFLN, Inc.’s dieticians and nutritionists construct new diets to improve their clients eating habits. FFLN, Inc. also provides food safety tips which are crucial to HIV/AIDS clients who often have to alter their diet to tolerate their medicine and maximize their strength and overall health.

In addition to making a contribution to this very important cause, you can register as an individual or, if you are a business owner, register your company to participate in the upcoming marathon/half marathon. You can also volunteer your time, talents and/or professional services.

The FFLN AIDS Marathon is hosted annually by ING Miami Marathon. This year the marathon is January 31, 2010. Our goal is to raise $50,000. Fundraising will continue until goal our reached. You can make a direct donation online using a debit or credit card or download the donation form and mail in your donation. Please make checks payable to: FFLN AIDS Marathon 2010. All contributions raised by the marathon go directly to FFLN, Inc., which allocates 85% to client services. All contributions are tax deductible.
