Isaac Turienzo, Teresa Nieto Dance Company, Rumba by Omar Hernandez and Xiomara Laugart in Concert 2/26/09

Centro Cultural Espanol presents
in association with FUNDarte
Isaac Turienzo Trío. Jazz de raíz
Isaac Turienzo, piano; Miguel Angel Chastang, contrabajo; Tino di Geraldo, batería

On Thursday February 26, the Cultural Center of Spain brings a unique opportunity to enjoy the best of Spanish jazz with the concert of Isaac Turienzo trío, a true treat for jazz lovers, part of the Beyond CCE program. Turienzo has been highlighted by the Spanish SGAE as one of the most important Spanish jazz musicians of the Nineties and has been present in practically all of the best jazz festivals, theaters and jazz houses in the World, including the Athens International Jazz Festival, The International Jazz Festival of San Sebastian, The Pushkin Museum Auditorium in Moscow, the European Community Auditorium Palace, Centro Cultural de la Villa de Madrid, the International Jazz Festival of Getxo, Teatro Campoamor in Oviedo and Jovellanos in Gijón, to name a few. During his remarkable career as a jazz musician, he has shared the stage with big names such as Andrezj Oleznizjack, Rebecca Parrish, Jorge Pardo, Miguel Ángel Chastang, Carlos Barreto, Carlos Carli, Chris Kase, Laurent Filipe, Tino di Geraldo, Guillermo Mc Guill, Ove Larsson, Bob Sands and Matthew Simon.
The Miami concert will feature his trio (Isaac at the piano, Miguel Angel Chastang, base and Tino di Geraldo on drums) with the “Jazz the Raíz” (Rooted Jazz) project, a tribute to the deepest music, the one we always carry deep down inside of our hearts, the music of a mother that brings a new perspective of our popular music with true sensibility. All three artists propose a journey through time with and endless horizon, where the ballad and the lullaby turn into a “Havanera”. Using universal languages such as jazz or the most updated flamenco, traditional songs are supplemented with originally and elaborated rhythms. Popular songs from Asturias or simply Iberian classics converted into ballads, waltzes and fados turn into a tribute to peace and understanding in the World and a meeting point for good music fans.

Good for The Noff for delaying the Stadium Deal

{Okay, I know this isn’t a political blog. And I know nobody wants to hear me pontificate, but it’s my blog and I’ll talk about what I want. This crap really pisses me off, so I had to say something.}

Full Story Here.

“With the Florida Marlins stadium deal in danger of being killed — with just four commissioners present — Miami Commissioners late Friday postponed a final vote until March 12. That will allow all 5 commissioners to be present — and may save the deal.

The vote followed a day-long debate that descended into chaos Friday afternoon after City Commissioner Marc Sarnoff demanded significant modifications to the deal in exchange for his support.

Those modifications included making the team partially responsible for cost overruns at the stadium’s planned parking garage and greater financial benefits to city and county government when it comes to stadium naming rights and profits from the possible future sale of the team.

Without Sarnoff’s support and with Michelle Spence-Jones absent, commissioners were deadlocked in a 2-2 tie, which for now would kill the deal.

After Sarnoff requested the changes, commissioners abruptly took a recess.”

{Personally, I think it is bullshit to make the tax payers pay for a playground for a bunch of rich people. All of the Marlins and their corporate overlords make about a bajillion dollars more than I do. If they want to new space, they can freaking build it themselves. Grats to City Commissioner Marc Sarnoff for showing at least a little restraint and defending our interests.I now return you to your regular festivities!}

Fado star Mariza in concert at Arsht Center 3/28/09

“Fado is the traditional music of Portugal – proud, austere and deeply melancholic. Mariza is the music’s biggest star for a reason: She sings it not as musty nostalgia but as exuberant twenty-first-century pop, with a low, mesmerizing alto that’s as commanding as any pop singer today…remaking fado’s ancient sadness into a majestic modern sound.” – Rolling Stone

The Evolution of Broadway 2/21-22/09

The Evolution of Broadway
Feb. 21 & 22, Sat. 8 pm, Sun., 3 pm
A wonderful new musical revue by ASJ’s Artistic Director David Kingery

The Broadway Musical is a true American art form!

Broadway has captivated audiences for over a century, with cutting-edge plots, music and lyrics that mirror our multi-faceted society.

Join David & his talented troupe of singers, dancers & actors on this journey that celebrates the riches of Broadway — past & present.

Where: Arts at St. Johns, 4760 Pinetree Drive,
Miami Beach, FL 33140
TIX: $20 adults, $15 online/seniors/students
Buy tickets online at www.artsatstjohns.com
Phone: 305-613-2325
We thank The Miami Salon Group for its generous grant for this program. Thanks also to the City of Miami Beach Cultural Affairs Program and the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs for their support.

Arts at St. Johns presents a new Broadway revue about the birth and blossoming of the American musical since its inception over 100 years ago. The Broadway musical, a true American art form, often mirrors society – at its best and worst. Thousands of shows have been created — with endless plots, subjects, styles, settings and genres. The Broadway musical evolved alongside American culture- and sometimes paved the way.

Recently, numerous Broadway shows have closed in New York due to the new economic crisis – ticket sales are low and audiences are dwindling. Will Broadway survive? We believe it absolutely will!

In the late 1800’s, the format of the Broadway musical originated in New York City through a collaboration of talented theater actors, vaudeville performers and burlesque dancers, led by the lavish producer Florenz Ziegfeld. The first popular shows were written by great American composers such as the Gershwins, Irving Berlin, and Jerome Kern and were campy, fun, and poetic, with plots, songs, flashy costumes and at times, risqué subject matter.

The stock-market crash of 1929 and the ensuing Great Depression profoundly affected Broadway theater, causing the number of productions to decline dramatically. But writers and performers never gave up their passion and love of Musical Theater.

Paradoxically, the period after the Depression was quite creative and spawned THE GOLDEN AGE OF BROADWAY, starting in the early 40’s with classic greats such as Oklahoma, The Sound of Music, The King and I, Hello Dolly and My Fair Lady. Composers such as Rodgers and Hammerstein, Lerner and Lowe, Kander and Ebb, and Jerry Herman churned out Broadway blockbusters. These shows also created huge stars including Julie Andrews, Ethel Merman, Carol Channing, George M. Cohan, and Rex Harrison.

Musicals have explored almost every subject and classic tale imaginable, covering diverse topics such as cultural differences, war, young love, murder, royalty, poverty, racism, religion and other controversial issues. Broadway has also recognized and paid tribute to many diverse ethnicities and cultures, with shows such as West Side Story, Miss Saigon, The Lion King, Brigadoon and the classic of Porgy n Bess.

The music, politics and the media of 60’s and 70’s changed America – and Broadway shows. Rock music, dominating the radio waves, also infiltrated the stage. The musicals Jesus Christ Superstar, Grease, and Bye Bye Birdie rocked the house. The first rock musical was HAIR- filled with hippies, afros and even full nudity.

Today, ASJ’s artistic director, David Kingery, has crafted this lively new production, The Evolution of Broadway, as a testament to the creativity of this genre. The production will also cover modern musicals including the styles of Andrew Lloyd Weber, Steven Sondheim and Steven Schwartz, paying tributes to shows like Cats, Sweeney Todd, Evita, Phantom of the Opera, and Wicked.

Broadway has survived and mirrored two world wars, various political upheavals, the Great Depression and now faces another economic downfall. However, we know that this American art form is strong and resilient – Broadway will persevere!!!

blended pre-Columbian artifacts and feel with old world Spanish
architecture. The name “Mamajuana” itself is derived from a drink created by
the Taino Indians who are indigenous to the Dominican Republic. The
Mamajuana drink is a concoction made of herbs, roots, rum, and wine which
has been used as a cure all that treats everything from impotency to the
flu.

Much like the Mamajuana drink the Café will act as a cure all for patrons as
the venue transports them from the mundane to an exotic Dominican paradise.
One can indulge in amazing cocktails, an award-winning wine list (under the
direction of Sommelier Yamil Martinez) and live entertainment. But the real
star of the show is the cuisine. Acclaimed Chef Ricardo Cardona, a pioneer
of Nuevo Latin Cuisine who created the Mamajuana menu in New York will
oversee the kitchen creating the menu in Miami as well. Cardona, who has
been featured in numerous publications including The New York Times, The
L.A. Times, and The Chicago Tribune, has worked in a variety of French and
American restaurants before accepting his current task at this venue
situated in one of the most prominent areas of South Florida.

On Thursday February 19th 2009 the grand opening will be like an awards
ceremony complete with a red carpet filled with local, regional and
national/international celebrities and dignitaries including: Aide to Miami
Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez, Roddy Gomez, Coral Gables Chamber of
Commerce and the Dominican American National Chamber of Commerce, Florida.

Onlookers will get to feast their eyes on all that equals a “wow” factor
such as the most fabulous exotic vehicles out in the market parked out front
courtesy of Elite Luxury Services, body painted models and performers
courtesy of Zhantra Entertainment and Drawing on People, music, surprise
performances and much, much, more. Once inside the venue, guests will

have the opportunity to sit amidst the beautiful ambiance the ownership had
created, including original artwork by artist Alex Yanes.

Guests, VIPS including: Tito Puente Jr., Fernando Del Rincon, Tony Andrade,
Nuestra Belleza Latina Alejandra Espinoza, Shalim, Jorge Moreno, Carlos
Navarro, Charytin Goyco, Karol Rosa, Liset Alea, and media will be present
as this opening takes everyone on a journey, a fabulous one embracing a
concept straight from NYC to the city of beaches and amazing nightlife-
Miami.

The Mamajuana grand Opening will take place with a ribbon cutting at 6:30pm,
cocktail reception with music from 7-10pm.

Promotional partners include: Presidente Beer, Perry Ellis
International/Cubavera,

Got It Concierge, Gables Magazine, One Source Branding, and the UM
Transplant Foundation.

Sultan Returns to Sundance feat. Antoine of Second Sun this Sunday 2/22/09

The Sundance fam couldn’t wait for the Return of Sultan since we first featured him last October… & just for the occasion, Antoine of “Second Sun” will be performing live featuring Second Sun’s single “Golden” (Sultan & Ned Shepard remix) and Stephan Luke’s new single “The invisible Man” forthcoming on Sultan’s Harem records.

For the last few years, SULTAN has been at the forefront of Canada’s Electronic Dance scene. He’s remixed, produced & released tunes on Deep Dish’s “Yoshitoshi” & “Shinichi” labels, as well as John Digweed’s “Bedrock”, not to mention he’s the label boss of Harem records. Besides keeping busy in the studio, Sultan has hosted some of the biggest in the industry on his “Connected Live” Radio Show including Sharam & Dubfire of Deep Dish, Nic Fanciulli, Danny Howells, Desyn Masiello & then some. Currently his radio show is one of the most listened shows, syndicated to over 20 internet and FM radio stations.

As for SECOND SUN, Antoine & Adam were discovered by Paul Van Dyk in the late 90’s. Soon the boys collaborated with PVD in the studio, to later remix & work with the likes of Sharam (Deep Dish), Sander Kleinenberg, The Shapeshifters, not to mention Jared Leto’s band “30 seconds to mars”. Live, the boys keep a busy global tour schedule performing at some of the world’s biggest dance festivals from Global Gathering (UK) & Gatecrasher Summer Soundsystem (UK) to Ultra Music Festival (US), Planet Love (Ireland), The South American Music Conference & then some…

Two years after Rachmaninoff wrote his famous Vespers in 1915, the Russian Revolution silenced sacred music and the voice of the Russian Orthodox Church. Today, one hears resurgence in the glorious Orthodox musical tradition. John Tavener’s Greek Orthodox inspired compositions and Arvo Part’s reverent treatment of Church Slavonic hearken back to the glory of Orthodox composition typified by Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky and Bortniansky.

Dada Bar Opens in the Sagamore Hotel 2/12/09

Dada Bar Opens tonight in the Sagamore Hotel, 1671 Collins Ave; 305.535.8088
RSVP: cescov@hotmail.com

Named for the rebelliously nonsensical movement (and as a nod to the Taplin family collection lent to the Sagamore), Dada’s a tiny bar done entirely in white (including leather banquettes and cube-like tables encrusted w/ pearlescent marbles), whose walls are tiled in screens casting images against a bar-backing 13ft-tall mirror — all in all, a pinball machine of digital art. Furthering the culture, the music’s overseen by a Grammy-winning producer (JLo, etc) who promises to spin tunes you’ve never heard on the radio (so no JLo, etc) through an audacious sound system designed for much bigger spaces, dubbed the Dynacord Cobra-2 — sadly, as close to a sequel as Cobra will ever get. Bottle service can be had, but tables are for anyone who wanders in; booze includes magnums of both champagne and vodka, plus specialty drinks like the Chilean Passion Fruit: vodka, passion fruit liqueur & puree, and muddled jalapeños (so you know it’s manly).

Rustic Italian grub can be ordered from the Sagamore’s Whitehall Restaurant, e.g., a big bowl of seafood soup (mussels, clams, shrimp, octopus, lobster); filet mignon with Parmesan fonduta, and desserts like crispy cannolis with an almond-Frangelico dip — because cannolis who think you’re not in it for the booze are also fooling themselves.

Grand opening party tonight, 8pm to 2am: RSVP here or call 305.535.8088

Miami Contemporary Dance Company presents Miami-Italia International 2/20-21/09

Miami-Italia International
Friday & Saturday, February 20 & 21 at 8 p.m.

From the comically edgy and ethereal to the precisely executed and zany, Miami Contemporary Dance Company presents two new world premieres in Miami-Italia International. The performance features the works of two award winning choreographers, Ray Sullivan of Miami Contemporary Dance Company and Paolo Mohovich of Balleto dell’ Esperia. The evening opens with the world premiere of Mohovich’s “Strange News From Another Star”. Taking chances, Mohovich plays between unison phrases and frenetic abandonment with a masterful focus on the structural and artistic integrity of the piece. The second half of the evening features the world premiere of “Nonna’s Pasta Dances.” The piece is based on the childhood experiences of Ray Sullivan and the time he spent with his italian grandmother when she prepared holiday feasts and family dinners. Sullivan takes these memories and introduces us to crazy, over the top characters and zany, off- the-wall dances. The result is a comedic tribute to all things Italian-American! For more information about Miami Contemporary Dance Company, call 305-865-6232. Tickets are $20, $25, $35 and limited Student and Senior tickets for $15 and can be purchased at the Colony Box Office or through Ticketmaster.

Around Jenin’s by Jerome Soimaud Opening Reception at Yeelen Art Gallery 2/14/09

“Around Jenin’s” by Jerome Soimaud, Opening Reception
Saturday, February 14 at 7 p.m.

“Around Jenin’s,” a photographic series of Miami’s Little Haiti by Jerome Soimaud, will open at Yeelen Art Gallery. From the perspective of a local corner store, the artist invites you to discover the universe of this African Diaspora. Jenin’s is the quintessential corner shop, a fixture in Little Haiti’s urban landscape where community life is played out. Vibrantly animated, the atmosphere offers many characters: the shop owner, the talker, Casanova, the baller/shot caller, the notorious, and even the dreamer. Ideas are spilled, gossip is shared and a vision for the future is laid out. You occasionally find the stumbling drunk, the so-called lady of the night, and even the police, adding to the spirit around Jenin’s. It’s about life, surrounded by streetlights, the wailing of sirens, and the sweet sounds of soul music. The exhibition is on view through March 31, by appointment only.

Artformz opening featuring Ramon Williams and PJ Mills 2/14/09

“Faith, Fear, and Fortune”
faith-fear-fortune
How Do You View Religion?
As Faith, As Fear of God, or As Placing a Bet on Fortune?
Artformz is pleased to announce the opening of its February exhibit
Featuring the work of
Ramon Williams and PJ Mills
With a special performance by:
Philosopher Enrique Paterson as part of the artist’s Collaborative Installation
“One Question – One Answer”

Join the artists this Saturday, February 14, 2009 at the Opening Reception: 7-10 pm

About the Exhibit:

Religion and faith are the subjects of lectures, books, artwork, and architectural monuments. In the gallery’s February show artists Mills (Irish-American) and Williams (Cuban-American) exhibit haunting interpretations of this theme flowing pervasively throughout much of each artist’s work. The imagery and objects are observations on the condition of contemporary society, filtered through each artist’s ethnic experience that has led to the creation of each one’s visual vocabulary. Mills sees religions as “predominately mechanisms for family/social control.” and Williams as “instruments of faith,” to help “look forward beyond that existence of fear and solitude.”

Even as the resulting works follow personal and private interpretations on the theme, and are separate stories, they are not – as evidenced in the collaborative “Botánica” installation titled “One Question, One Answer” assembled in the project room. The artists invite visitors to enter – one by one – where they may find, as Williams states: “the chance of grasping the meaning in the actual frailness of the merchandise and its hopeful consumer.” Enrique Patterson, philosopher, essayist, journalist, political analyst, radio talk show host, and in this case oracle, offers one “true” answer to each guest’s question on “The Politics of Faith or The Faith of Politics”.

PJ Mills exhibits 2 large banner style photographs each measuring 84″ high by 120″ wide. His images are evocative, dark interpretations of a personal struggle with what he may deem his own destiny. His ideas and images are governed by the paradoxes created by old family traditions and gained intellect.

Ramon Williams shows a variety of works that interpret a very different tradition. His view is one of the mystical and healing power of religions. However, one does not miss the scrutiny given to modern means of dissemination. He work neither judges nor criticizes society’s methods yet observes with humor the sometimes profit driven marketing of hope.

The exhibit runs from Feb. 14, 2009 – March 9, 2009

COCONUT GROVE ARTS FESTIVAL® PRESENTED BY
BLUE CROSS AND BLUE SHIELD OF FLORIDA
RETURNS FEBRUARY 14-16

A South Florida tradition continues on Presidents’ Day weekend as the Coconut Grove Arts Festival presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida will again transform the streets of Coconut Grove into an artists’ gallery. This year’s 46th annual event will showcase the works of 336 artists from 36 states and 3 countries, February 14-16.

This year’s selection of artists were chosen from more than 1,200 who submitted samples in mixed media, painting, photography, digital art, printmaking & drawing, watercolor, claywork, glass, fiber, jewelry & metalwork, sculpture and wood.

“The Grove has long been an artist’s playground,” said Monty Trainer, president of the Arts Festival, “and each year the Arts Festival brings fresh talent to enjoy its splendor.”

The Art Festival continues to expand its Culinary Pavilion luring visitors to presentations by award-winning chefs who share their knowledge and creativity in the culinary arts. As food continues to evolve into a specialized art form, the festival strives to make a home for South Florida’s award-winning chefs.

While art enthusiasts, collectors and casual observers explore the exhibits, youngsters have the opportunity to create their own works of art at Coconut Grove Bank Kids Creative Corner.

The Arts Festival was recently recognized as the “Top Fine Art Event” in the country by Sunshine Artist Magazine and received five awards from the International Festivals and Events Association.

Each year, the Arts Festival commissions an artist to create an official poster that typically becomes a collector’s item. This year’s poster was produced by South Florida pastel artist, Jacqueline Roch.

The 46th annual Coconut Grove Arts Festival® presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida will be held Presidents’ Day Weekend, February 14-16. Festival hours will be 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Admission to the Arts Festival is $7 per person, per day. Children 12 and under are free. The Festival is also offering a 3-day pass for $17. Residents of Coconut Grove in the 33133 zip code can enjoy the Festival all three days for only $7 with a specially priced 33133 pass (proof of residency required).

For more information on the Arts Festival, visit www.coconutgroveartsfestival.org. The Festival is produced by the Coconut Grove Art and Historical Association, Inc., a non-profit community organization under the direction of a board of directors and full-time staff. Proceeds from the annual event help to fund year-round arts programs and benefit the Coconut Grove Art and Historical Association, Inc. Building Fund which will be used to create and operate a permanent home in Coconut Grove for the Arts Festival.

AERO BAR presents The Martinez Brothers 2/21/09

AERO BAR presents the Martinez Brothers, if you’ve ever seen them spin, you know that what separates Chris and Steve Martinez from the rest of the pack isn’t just their skills, but their seemingly limitless energy. What sets apart the Martinez Brothers is their spirit. Oh, and another little thing: their age. By now you’ve heard about the Martinez Brothers. These guys are practically the definition of new blood. Steve is 20, Chris is 17. For a little perspective on the unlikelihood of their position, consider this: Shelter, the club where the Martinez Brothers learned just about everything they know about house music, opened its doors the same year that Chris was born.

Mamajuana Cafe Opens With Red Carpet Affair 2/19/09

Coral Gables, Florida which is no stranger to fine dining establishments is about to get a culinary boost from an indigenous Dominican miracle potion named “Mamajuana”. The owners of the famous Mamajuana Café in New York are ready to open their doors locally and treat Miami residents to the feel, sights, tastes, and sounds that have had the Big Apple buzzing for years.

A formal ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 6:30 pm with Coral Gables city officials, celebrities and the owners of Mamajuana (Victor Osorio, Carlos Saint-hilaire). Following that “welcome” into the South Florida community, the kick off celebration will commence. Passed hors de oeuvres, Mojitos courtesy of Bacardi, Champagne courtesy of Korbel and fresh rolled cigars courtesy of South Beach Cigar Shop will keep guests of this high end soiree smiling as they are the first to step foot into Mamajuana in Miami.

Mamajuana represents a place where all five of the senses will delight. Nestled across the street from “The Village of Merrick Park” Mamajuana Café will embark guests on a journey to a far off “paradise”. A full-on entertainment and dining experience, Mamajuana Cafe was created for the patron possessing an appreciation for culture, art, and cuisine. The venue is an attraction in itself as it stays true to pre and post Columbian Dominican culture.

The owners of Mamajuana Café considered every detail as they carefully blended pre-Columbian artifacts and feel with old world Spanish architecture. The name “Mamajuana” itself is derived from a drink created by the Taino Indians who are indigenous to the Dominican Republic. The Mamajuana drink is a concoction made of herbs, roots, rum, and wine which has been used as a cure all that treats everything from impotency to the flu.

Much like the Mamajuana drink the Café will act as a cure all for patrons as the venue transports them from the mundane to an exotic Dominican paradise. One can indulge in amazing cocktails, an award-winning wine list (under the direction of Sommelier Yamil Martinez) and live entertainment. But the real star of the show is the cuisine. Acclaimed Chef Ricardo Cardona, a pioneer of Nuevo Latin Cuisine who created the Mamajuana menu in New York will oversee the kitchen creating the menu in Miami as well. Cardona, who has been featured in numerous publications including The New York Times, The L.A. Times, and The Chicago Tribune, has worked in a variety of French and American restaurants before accepting his current task at this venue situated in one of the most prominent areas of South Florida.

On Thursday February 19th 2009 the grand opening will be like an awards ceremony complete with a red carpet filled with local, regional and national/international celebrities. Onlookers will get to feast their eyes on all that equals a “wow” factor such as the most fabulous exotic vehicles out in the market parked out front courtesy of Elite Luxury Rentals, body painted models and performers courtesy of Zhantra Entertainment and Drawing on People, music, surprise performances and much, much, more. Once inside the venue, guests will have the opportunity to sit amidst the beautiful ambiance the ownership had created, including original artwork by artist Alex Yanes.

Guests, VIPS including: Tito Puente Jr., Fernando Del Rincon, Tony Andrade, Nuestra Belleza Latina Alejandra Espinoza, Shalim, Latin Grammy Winner Jorge Moreno, Charytin Goyco, Karol Rosa, List Alea, and media will be present as this opening takes everyone on a journey, a fabulous one embracing a concept straight from NYC to the city of beaches and amazing nightlife- Miami.

The Mamajuana grand Opening will take place with a ribbon cutting at 6:30pm, cocktail reception with music from 7-10pm. Promotional partners include: Presidente Beer, Got It Concierge, Gables Magazine, One Source Branding, and the UM Transplant Foundation.

For additional information on Mamajuana Café in Coral Gables, or grand opening festivities, please contact: Creativas Group (305) 968-2384 and via email at: info@creativasgroup.com for media coverage, and interviews. Photographs – Little Havana Art Walk

{Okay, did anyone else know how cool this thing is? We all talk about Wynwood and Design District and the Gables, but you hardly ever hear anything about the art walk down on Calle Ocho. Meanwhile, they have been building quite the arts district down there. They call it Viernes Culturales Cultural Fridays. It is more than just galleries, there is music and restaurants, and even a cabaret. It was cold the night we went, so I imagine that it would normally be even busier than it was, but it was still pretty bustling. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.}

The 68th annual Miami International Boat Show and Strictly Sail Miami returns to South Florida on Feb. 12-16, 2009, at the Miami Beach Convention Center, the Sea Isle Marina & Yachting Center, and Miamarina at Bayside.

The world’s greatest boat show brings together more than 2,200 exhibitors showcasing thousands of the newest powerboats, sailboats, engines, marine electronics and accessories, at the best deals of the year. In addition to boats, there is a host of interactive seminars and demonstrations to educate visitors about the boating lifestyle and enhance time spent out on the water.

“Visitors from around the globe flock to Miami to see the latest and greatest the boating industry has to offer – if you’re a boater, or thinking about becoming one, this is a can’t miss event,” said Cathy Rick-Joule, show manager of the Miami show and vice president of Southern Shows for the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA). “Boating is big business in Miami, but we’ll be taking it to a whole new level this year with exhibitors offering incredible deals and our three locations bringing access to the world’s best boats and boating gear.”

Highlights of the 2009 Miami International Boat Show include:

Big Game Room Sport Fishing Expo
To help experienced boaters and novices learn angling skills and hone their fishing techniques, the Miami International Boat Show brings together every product and resource imaginable into one central location at the Big Game Room Sport Fishing Expo, which is co-presented by Marlin, Sport Fishing and Salt Water Sportsman magazines along with The Outdoor Channel, America’s leader in outdoor TV.

Now in its sixth year, the Big Game Room provides visitors with opportunities to see and buy the latest fishing gear; participate in interactive seminars led by fishing legends; gather information on fishing destinations, charters and tournaments; and simply share good times with fellow anglers.

The Big Game Room is located on the second floor of the Miami Beach Convention Center, above Hall B.

Discover Boating Center
The Discover Boating Center is an educational hub providing Show visitors with unbiased advice on selecting, buying and maintaining a boat in addition to information about financing, popular fishing destinations, boating tips and more. The “Boating Guy” will also be on hand to give seminars on a wide variety of boating topics.

The Discover Boating Center is located in Lobby C of the Miami Beach Convention Center.

Boating Safety Challenge
Visitors are asked to “Take the Sea Tow Challenge” and try a boating safety activity hosted by the Sea Tow Foundation for Boating Safety and Education. Prizes will be awarded for various levels of participation.
The Boating Safety Challenge is located in Lobby C of the Miami Beach Convention Center.

David Castillo Gallery presents Tom Scicluna’s Pinched & Guido Albi-Marini’s Calor 2/14/09

David Castillo Annex: Tom Scicluna, Pinched
David Castillo Gallery: Guido Albi-Marini, Calor

Tom Scicluna
Pinched
David Castillo Annex
2234 NW 2nd Avenue, Miami
February 14 – March 7, 2009
Reception February 14, 7-10
David Castillo Annex is proud to present Tom Scicluna’s site-specific installation, Pinched.

Working with construction-ready materials, Scicluna implements an I-beam arrangement as a productive pause. The sprawling composition animates the exhibition space, dominating the floor as imminently as the financial real estate crisis in the US, and as carefully as the Bauhaus movement sought social redemption in the rigor of aestheticism. The complacency of Scicluna’s exaggerated arrangement, seemingly grafted from the site itself, also bears traces of ironic Absurdism; the viewer’s capacity to swallow art as architecture becomes both graceful in its democracy and frightening in its unquestioned breadth.

Scicluna believes in situational place and artistic situation. By harnessing the meeting of materials, the ability of mass to displace mass, the coerciveness of perspective, and the potential energy of balance, Pinched engages sensationalists and scrutinizers with the acutest attention.

Tom Scicluna was born in London in 1974 and lives and works in Miami. Recent group shows include Rendez-Vous ’08, Musée d’Art Contemporain de Lyon, France, in conjunction with the Moore Space European Residency Program; Tuttle, David Castillo Gallery (2008); and Shadows, Disappearances and Illusions, Miami Art Museum (2008).

Guido Albi-Marini
Calor
David Castillo Gallery
2234 NW 2nd Avenue, Miami
February 14 – March 7, 2009
Reception February 14, 7-10 pm

In the David Castillo Gallery, Guido Albi- Marini’s Calor philosophises that the eye of the camera sees what exists, while the eye of the artist sees meanings as unrefined as sugar in its raw form. The documentary, taciturn power of Albi-Marini’s images give voice to traders of the Muslim Agricultural Revolution, slave laborers of the Caribbean, and steam engineers of the Industrial Age. Sugar has crystallized the history of the world’s greatest advancements and atrocities. “Calor,” the entomology of ” calorie,” connects to “heat” in Latin and related languages. Sugar’s harmful caloric makeup and contentious politics remain hot topics that cannot be destroyed as easily as farmers burn sugarcane to reduce the amount of leafy material before processing.

Albi-Marini’s photographs not only call to mind destruction and vigilance, but the fuel of economy, consumption of resources, expense of labor, and exchange of culture. From its ashes rise universal enjoyment and consequence. Albi-Marini allows the viewer to understand sugarcane as a perennial, continuing to colonize contemporary society’s emotional psyche and physical addictions. Historical and medical trends seem to urge that burning sugarcane should be understood as an act of protest. However, from the “sugar nips” of 18th century London to the Pez dispensers of today, sugar continues to coat the palms of the people, and the people remain in the palms of corporate hands.

Guido Albi-Marini was born in Naples, Italy in 1955 and lives and works primarily in Miami. Albi-Marini was a pupil of the Neapolitan salons frequented by artists and architects during the 1960s and 70s. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and is in many important public and private collections.

David Castillo Gallery announces John Bailly’s Bloody Noses and Cracked Crowns in the Project Room. Bailly’s oil paintings and works on paper accumulate physical manifestations of states of mind. Often brooding and tumultuous, Bailly’s work seems to suggest the struggle for communication, fluidity of identity, and human empathy through a dense language of bridges, cityscapes, ancient geography, and self-annihilation. Ultimately, Bailly uses abstraction and Dadaist technique to empower the viewer to construct meaning in a world where objects and events possess no true nature.

John Bailly was born in Slough, Buckinghamshire, and raised in Paris, Aix-les-Bains, Long Island, Lyon, and Miami. He received his MFA in painting and printmaking from Yale University in 1993, and is a Fellow of The Honors College at Florida International University. His work has been exhibited at University of Maine Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville, Texas State University, and other institutions throughout the US. In 2006 Bailly was awarded the South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship for Visual and Media Artists, and a State of Florida Individual Artist Grant.

Chinese Artists Cao Xiaodong and
Li Xiaofeng Recycle Tradition
“SAVE AS: Contemporary Chinese Art Born of Ancient Traditions,”
offers an artistic take on the theme of recycling.

Being exhibited from the first time outside China, the show includes three garments fashioned of ancient ceramic shards and 18 mostly large-scale paintings whose subject matter is old photos and postcards.

Li Xiaofeng created two full-length dresses and a man’s jacket, shirt and necktie from pieces of Ming, Qing, Yuan and Song dynasty porcelain, sewn together with silver wire. Three of the fragments in one dress are from the Emperor’s Palace, as indicated by their five-clawed dragons, which were forbidden for anyone else.

Cao Xiaodong, whose paintings are done as a dot pattern reminescent of old newspaper illustrations, contrasts social and political context in China with that of the United States and Europe, such as young women in the militaristic uniforms of the Cultural Revolution compared with Playboy Bunnies, or the Tiananamen Square massacre with the Hungarian Revolution of 1956.

Ivan Loboguerrero, Alejandro De Narváez and Erick Sánchez. Recent Works
Loboguerrero was born Bogotá, Colombia. His art blends clean colors with shinning strokes, which creates peaceful atmospheres. His work is rich in oil quantity and though elaborated textures, visual sensations are generated. With this horizon, the artist offers us his first diptych.
De Narváez was also born in Colombia. His work includes both paintings and sculptures. . In his paintings, the mix of geometric angles and spherical elements, creates a gamma of vivid colors, which can be appreciated in his Forest series. In his sculptures, we see his inspiration, which is the geometry of the pre-Columbian cultures, evoking historical memories of legendary civilization
Sánchez is a painter and photographer born in Ponce, Puerto Rico in 1973. He brings us a serie of paintings Metamorphosis: Dreams and Memories. His work transports us to an ideal place full of hope peace and harmony. His work is an expression of his innermost self…his feelings, the manner in which he thinks, his deep spirituality.

César Paternosto
Painting and Sculpture 1970 – 2008

Born in Argentina in 1931, César Paternosto has exhibited widely in Latin America and abroad. Since he began working as an artist in the early 1960s, Paternosto has been in the vanguard of abstraction in Latin America. An expert on the symbolic systems of Pre-Columbian civilizations, Paternosto has used his own photography and drawings to document and analyze the ancient remains of the region. Paternosto’s exploration of Amerindian abstraction has fueled his artistic work of the last twenty years.
“[…] Ever since the early 1930s, when Alexander Calder visited Piet Mondrian’s studio and had that marvelous vision of imagining his neat rectangles as if they were flying through space, nobody had achieved a similar effect to the one conceived and executed by Paternosto with his pictures painted on the sides of the canvas, with the resulting effect described earlier, of glowing weightlessness.”

Becoming a world wide recognized DJ with Warp Brothers he made his first ever pseudonym D.O.N.S. and produced the remake of D.O.N.S. feat Technotronic – Pump Up The Jam with which he already had a big international Dance Hit back in 1997. After 8 years this track again blew up on an international level with the Kurd Maverick remix. Now having played in high profile clubs and events all over the world from South Africa to Australia, England to Singapore and Germany to Russia and the USA, Paris to Cannes, the D.O.N.S. show has taken the clubs by storm. Art of Deception Exhibit at Lurie – Kavachnina Gallery 2/14/09

rt of Deception
abstract and ethnic paintings and sculptures
Terence Carr (Kenya), Dee Sands (Germany), John LaHuis (USA), KX2 (USA)
February 14 – March 11, 2009
Opening Reception: Feb 14, 2009 / 7:00 pm – 11:00 pm

Half-true, half –false… How vulnerable we are to deceit? Are we the victims or the perpetrators? Or even more; is it correct to call it deceit or just a difference in personal perception?

However you wish to view it, Art of Deception with artists Terence Carr (Kenya), Dee Sands (Germany), John LaHuis (USA) and KX2 (an artistic collaboration between sisters Ruth Avra and Dana Lynn Keinman) promises to be an entertaining and eye opening exhibition, in which the unifying theme is the duality and polarity in art with equally valid meanings; good versus bad, beauty versus ugliness, love versus hate, what you see might not be the same as what another person sees.

The opening reception will be held on February 14 from 7:00 to 11:00 pm at LURIE – KAVACHNINA GALLERY located in Miami’s Wynwood Art District at 46 NW 36 St.. Guest will be able to meet the artists, enjoy music and light refreshments. The exhibition will be on display until March 11, it can be seen Tuesdays to Saturdays from 12:00 – 7:00 pm and on Mondays by appointment.

About Mom-2-Mom 58 Foundation
The Mom-2-Mom 58 Foundation is a non-profit faith-based organization that was born out of the tragic death of the late Kansas City Chief linebacker Derrick Thomas on February 8, 2000. The founder, Mrs. Edith Morgan, suffered the sudden death of a beloved son whose vehicular accident could have been less tragic had he been wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. She felt a pressing need to get the word out to other mothers about the importance of training our children in the use of seat belts. She also realized shortly thereafter that there were other issues she wanted to address and other situations wherein she wanted to be of service, particularly to mothers and to children. The Mom-2-Mom 58 Foundation focuses on child safety and empowerment and other issues that can impact a mother’s life such as a family member with paralysis, adolescent obesity, juvenile delinquency, domestic violence, heath care, estate planning, etc.

Many people looked up to Derrick Thomas as a role model. He left a tremendous impact on people – even people who did not know him personally. He touched many lives while he was alive and the Mom-2-Mom 58 organization is trying to continue touching lives in his memory by concentrating on strengthening mothers and nurturing children.

South Florida Mom Turns Passion for Kids and Food into a Budding Business

Introduces New, Hands-On Approach to Teaching Valuable Skills
and an Appreciation for Food and Cooking

SURFSIDE, Fla. – The Budding Cook teaches kids from Aventura to Miami Beach the joy of cooking. Mimi Chacin, mother of two and founder of Surfside-based The Budding Cook, hosts cooking classes for kids from three to 12 by bringing the ingredients, the lessons, the equipment and the fun to their homes.

Chacin combines her passion for cooking with her flair for different cultures to provide a unique and educational activity for parents desperately seeking positive extracurricular outlets for their children.

“Kids are natural cooks because they are curious and have no fear in the kitchen,” said Chacin. “My goal is to channel their curiosity into the kitchen where we can cultivate an awareness of new flavors, cultures and nutrition.”

Born in Spain and raised in Venezuela by well-traveled parents, Chacin learned at a young age to embrace a multitude of cuisines. That is why many Budding Cook classes feature age-appropriate recipes for internationally-inspired dishes ranging from Pad Thai and Greek-inspired lamb meatballs with tomato, feta and olive salad to the more familiar whole wheat waffles with sliced fresh strawberries and maple syrup.

While fostering a greater appreciation of the origins of our food, The Budding Cook classes also reinforce traditional disciplines learned at school like math, reading, science, foreign language and geography, along with important skills like organization, following directions, time management and teamwork. According to Chacin, even the littlest Budding Cooks can benefit from refining their motor skills and improving their vocabulary.

As a culinary school graduate, Chacin understands the importance of kitchen safety. She strives to teach each Budding Cook the basics of proper food handling, food preparation, cooking techniques and presentation.

The excitement sparked by this latest craze for kids is palpable in Surfside, Bay Harbor, Miami Shores and other neighborhoods in Miami-Dade County where classes are in progress. Chacin is looking to the future with plans for summer camps and expansion to new neighborhoods like Coral Gables. She is also enthusiastic about introducing The Budding Cook concept to teenagers and adults as she grows.

Chacin received her B.S. in Mass Communications from Boston University in 1994 and graduated from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale’s Culinary Arts Program with high honors in 2005. Before founding The Budding Cook in 2008, she worked in the kitchen of Michy’s, a Miami hot spot for foodies, and served as a resident cooking teacher at Skipping Stones, a local enrichment and activity center for kids.

Chacin resides in Surfside, Fla. with her two sons.

Lisa Egeli’s paintings are moving and sophisticated portrayals of the places we treasure. Her landscapes and portraits, in oil and pastel, have been featured in many exhibits and permanent collections in her two decade professional career. Lisa’s formal training was at the American Academy of Art in Chicago . Her work has been recognized in a variety of distinguished regional and national events, including Plein Air Easton , Paint Annapolis, Oil Painters of America’s Regional and National Exhibitions, and Arts for the Parks. Miami Theatrical Premiere!
NEWLY RESTORED IN 2008!
Lola Montès
(Max Ophüls/France/1955/restoration 2008)
With Martine Carol, Peter Ustinov, Anton Walbrook

Max Ophüls’ final work, and arguably the masterpiece of a career that encompassed films in five different languages, Lola Montès is the colossal story of dancer turned exploited circus performer Lola Montès, told through flashbacks in various color tones according to the scandalous periods of her life. It was Ophüls’ first movie in color and Cinemascope widescreen, and was the biggest-budgeted French film to date. This ravishing new restoration was showcased to huge acclaim at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, as well as this year’s Telluride and New York Film Festivals. It is the only film ever to have been selected for the New York Film Festival three times: for the very first NYFF in 1963, again in 1969, and this year. In French with English subtitles.
OFFICIAL SELECTION: Cannes, New York, and Teluride Film Festivals 2008

“PLEASURES & LOVES Via Max OPHÜLS”
Miami Theatrical Premiere!
NEWLY RESTORED IN 2008!
Le Plaisir (Pleasure)
(France/1952)
“But my friend, happiness is not a joyful thing”.
With Claude Dauphin, Jean Gabin, Simone Simon, Danielle Darrieux
Gaby Morlay, Madeleine Renaud

Next subject in Ophüls’ beautifully cinematic cannon of examination is that of pleasure, and its close affair with love. The film’s trio structure of three separate stories are filmed with sweeping grandeur, with a typical Ophüls wink of the eye. (but not in a Sarah Palin kind of way). First stop is Pleasure and YOUTH: (a man’s attempt to hide his age as he courts the ladies); then comes Pleasure and PURITY: (a brothel Madame’s attempt to bring balance into her girl’s lives by bringing them to her niece’s communion in the country); and finally Pleasure and DEATH: (a painter’s tragic love affair with his model). Who said pleasure was not multifaceted, very personal, and yes, complicated?

The Model Citizens present Cine-IMPROV Live at the Miami Beach Cinematheque 2/18/09

18 WED 8:30pm: The “Model Citizens” present
Cine-IMPROV Live!

Miami’s hottest improv actors perform unscripted theater based on your suggestions, in the art
of “long form improv,” rather than the typical comedy you see at the clubs and on TV. Including film dubbing, the “Armando Diaz Experience,” and a live improvised “movie” based on the life experiences of one of our audience members, with stylistic parody, edits, comedic characters,
and other scenic devices.
This month’s theme: LOVE (In All The Wrong Places!)
“The Cine-Improv troupe works at a higher level than even the pros you see on Comedy Central, late-night TV, and at clubs. Their improvised take on film removes the middleman and leaves him (rolling) on the cut-up room floor (in this case that’s the Miami Beach Cinematheque).”–Greg Baker New Times

The Man Who Laughs at the Miami Beach Cinematheque 2/14/09

14 SAT 8pm: Valentines Day!
“SILENTS Please!”
The MBC series of silent films with LIVE accompaniment!
The Man Who Laughs
(Paul Leni/USA/1928)
Based on the novel by Victor Hugo
With Conrad Veidt, Mary Philbin, and Olga Baclanova

A tragic love story that shocked but delighted American audiences in 1928 (and almost 100
years later, inspired actor Heath Ledger in preparation for his Oscar® nominated role in Dark Knight), silent star Conrad Veidt (from the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari) stars as Gwynplaine, an English nobleman’s son who is kidnapped by a political enemy after offending King James II, and then is mutilated by a gypsy “surgeon” who carves a “rictus” smile upon his face. Finding shelter
in a traveling freakshow, he falls in love with a blind girl (The Phantom of the Opera’s Mary Philbin), the one person who cannot be repulsed by his appearance. As years pass, Gwynplaine falls in love with her, but refuses to allow himself to marry her because he feels his hideous face makes him unworthy, and the hand of fate draws Gwynplaine back into the world of intrigue.
“ONE OF THE FINAL TREASURES of German inspired silent Expressionism”
—Roger Ebert
Tonight’s film will have LIVE OPERA accompanying the existing score, by Miami Music Academy vocalist AMY ALVARADO!

12 THU 8:30pm
An evening with Marian Marzynski
And guest filmmaker Franco de Peña
Miami Theatrical Premiere!
The Future of an Illusion
(El Porvenir de una Ilusion)
(Franco de Peña/Poland/Cuba/1997) Cinematography: Antoine Vivas Denisov

Pablito, a young kid writes a message for his father asking him to return to Havana,
he inserts it in a bottle and throws it into the Sea.
Puly Orama, the cigar seller, quarrels once and again with his wife about money,
while she carries his infant in arms.
Blanca, the prostitute, is waiting for the love of her life to appear
and take her away from Havana.
Luisa, the aristocrat is waiting for her children to come back to Havana,
to see her before she dies.
They all wait for the New Year to come and bring them a better future,
an illusion that might bring light for their life.
Franco de Peña brings documentary and fiction together, with beautiful photography,
in a painting of soft tonalities and a microcosm tainted with melancholy. Born and raised in Venezuela, Franco de Peña traveled the world, learning and developing his filmmaking skills in Montreal, Berlin, Barcelona and in Poland where he graduated from the famous Polish Film School in Lodz. His film Future of an Illusion shot in 1997 on a Havana street called “Future Street”, tells its story applying documentary techniques, and combining acting with life observation. It is also a case of filmmaking under political censorship.
Marzynski, who was making films in the Communist Poland and de Peña,
who learned filmmaking in the post-Communist Poland, will engage in a interview/discussion after the screening.

Three Colors: White (Trzy Kolory: Bialy)
(Poland/France/Switzerland/1994)

The second feature in Kieslowski’s “Three Colors” trilogy, the black comedy White, Karol Karol is an expatriate Polish hairdresser whose French wife divorces him after just six months of marriage because of his impotency. Penniless and devoid of his passport, Karol must journey back to Poland by hiding in a trunk. Upon his return, he slowly begins amassing a considerable fortune, ultimately hatching a perverse plot for revenge. An allegory about equality, the film is mordantly wry, a cynical look at power, marriage, and capitalism. In Polish and French with English Subtitles
