Talking About the World through Gullah/Geechee Culture with Cain Hope Felder, Ralph Johnson, Peter London, Noelle Theard 3/25/10

De Word Spoken Amungst We:
Talking About the World through Gullah/Geechee Culture
In conjunction with the exhibition
Gullah Geechee and the 7 Dreams: A project of Gary L. Moore
Thursday, March 25, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
2nd floor exhibition space, Main Library, 101 W. Flagler Street, Miami – 305.375.2665
We invite you to be part of a community discussion about the questions raised by the exhibition Gullah Geechee and the 7 Dreams. A multidisciplinary panel of practitioners will get us talking. They include:
Ralph B. Johnson, founding member of the Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission; Professor, Florida Atlantic University School of Architecture and Director, FAU Center for the Conservation of Architectural and Cultural Heritage
Cain Hope Felder, co-author and editor of the Original African Heritage Study Bible; professor of New Testament Language and Literature at the School of Divinity, Howard University
Peter London, associate professor of dance, New World School of the Arts; visiting Artistic Director Senior for The Martha Graham Dance Company; and faculty member, Alvin Ailey summer intensive program
Noelle Theard, independent photographer and documentarian
For Gullah Geechee and the 7 Dreams, artist Gary L. Moore curated an exhibition based on his perceptions of the Gullah/Geechee culture of his childhood in Pee Dee, South Carolina. The show includes his own sculptural and site-specific work, historical objects and artifacts from private collections, art from the Library System’s Permanent Art Collection, and rare books from the Florida Collection. The project makes aesthetic and metaphysical connections between folk culture, spirituality, histories of slavery and revolution, handmade aesthetics, and contemporary art. The 7 dreams of the exhibition’s title refer to seven ways the culture has survived, manifested itself and is part of the history of post-slavery African-American culture.
As part of the discussion, we might ask: How do folk cultures, languages and religions continue to be relevant? How does the impact of the encroaching tourist industry on the culture of the Sea Islands relate to development and gentrification in an urban area like Miami? How does this traditional African-American culture relate to contemporary Caribbean art and culture in Miami? Rather than a traditional panel discussion in which a group of “experts” speaks to a passive public, each member of the panel will work with a small group of audience members. At the end of the evening all of the groups will come back together as a whole to share their ideas.

This project has been funded through a grant from the Alternate ROOTS Community Artist/Partnership Program, with support from the Nathan Cummings Foundation and the Ford Foundation.

Locust Projects presents a Conversation with Drew Heitzler 3/11/10

Drew Heitzler
THE WORLD IS YOURS
Conversation with the artist: Thursday, March 11, 6:30pm
Opening reception: Saturday, March 13, 7-10pm
Through April 30

Locust Projects is pleased to announce a solo exhibition by Los Angeles-based artist and filmmaker Drew Heitzler. Heitzler’s new installation focuses on a two-channel video projection that explores the 1932 film Scarface.

Before Brian DePalma’s Miami-based remake was released in 1983, an original version of Scarface, directed by Howard Hawkes and produced by Howard Hughes, was produced in Los Angeles. For this exhibition, Heitzler edits Hawkes’ film to exclude dialog and create an abstract narrative that shifts the focus from drug and street crime to white-collar crime and government complicity.

The installation will also include appropriated photographs from the book Howard Hughes, His Life and Madness that explore how the Howard Hughes Medical Center, originally headquartered in Miami, was a tax dodge for Hughes made possible by a collaboration with Richard Nixon’s brother. The windows of Locust Projects will be lined with images from the cover of a 1974 issue of Playgirl magazine, which included an article about Howard Hughes and Richard Nixon.

Together, these works lend to the Heitzler’s practice of reconsidering histories as he assembles a series of seemingly unrelated sources to re-tell a story that was never explicitly told.

Frederick J. Frenger, Jr., a blithe psychopath from California, asked the flight attendant in first class for another glass of champagne and some writing materials. She brought him a cold half-bottle, uncorked it and left it with him, and returned a few moments later with some Pan Am writing paper and a white ball point pen. For the next hour, as he sipped champagne, Freddy practiced writing the signatures of Claude L. Bytell, Ramon Mendez, and Herman T. Gotlieb.

The best way to forge a signature, he knew, was to turn it upside down and draw it instead of trying to imitate the handwriting. That was the foolproof way, if a man had the time and the privacy and was forging a document or a check. Still, close enough was usually good enough for Freddy. He was not a careful person, and a full hour was a long time for him to engage in any activity without his mind turning to something else. Comfortably full, and a trifle dizzy from the wine, Freddy stretched out in the wide reclining seat, hugging the tiny airline pillow. He slept soundly until the attendant awakened him gently and asked him to fasten his seat belt for the descent into Miami International Airport.

Drew Heitzler (b. 1972 in Charleston, South Carolina) lives and works in Los Angeles, California. Heitzler received his MFA from Hunter College in 2000. His film based projects have been exhibited internationally at galleries and institutions including Renwick Gallery, The Project, Orchard, The Swiss Institute, Sculpture Center, Anthology Film Archives, and PS1 Contemporary Art Center in New York; Blum & Poe, Redling Fine Art, China Art Objects, TRUDI, and LA>

This exhibition is made possible with the support from: Andy Warhol Foundation; Galt & Skye Mikesell; Hannibal Cox Jr. Foundation; Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the Cultural Affairs Council, the Mayor, and the Miami-Dade County Boardof County Commissioners. Special thanks to: Blum & Poe, Los Angeles and Renwick Gallery, New York. Design: Venture Architects.

Writing Workshop at Wallflower Gallery 3/16/10

Tuesday, March 16, 2010 @ 7pm
The Wall Flower Gallery
10 Northeast 3rd Street
Miami, FL 33132-2129

Bring a friend and a notebook!
Tired of trying to be fabulous on a Tuesday night in South Beach?
How about something obtuse and not glamorous?

The Miami Writers, a group of emerging poets, novelists, screenwriters, bloggers and politicians (ha ha, just checking to see if you’re paying attention), are hosting an interactive writing and critique session at The Wallflower Gallery in downtown Miami on Tuesday, March 16 starting at 7pm.

What do you get out of this, exactly? Everyone’s got somethin’ to dish, and it all starts with writing a few words on paper. But then what? So often, the journals and electronic files go nowhere, and your dreams of becoming a writer never manifest.

Put an end to the procrastination while discovering a fun way to share and get feedback within a safe environment of like-minded people. Having an audience that wants to support you rather than heckle you off the stage is the first step to taking your creativity from just an idea to reality.

The way it works: This is a workshop for beginners. We will start with a warm-up of on-the-spot writing by giving you prompts. Then, in the second half of the workshop, you can share what you wrote and/or just give feedback to others. You may also bring writing from home – we especially like second or third drafts of work (since the first draft is often just a journal entry).

$10/person

About the Miami Writers
http://www.miamiwriters.com
In 2006, Alejandra Fernandez, Melanie Feliciano, Claudia Forestieri, Tennille Martinez and Ruben Soto got together at Azucar para el espiritu, a small spiritual bookstore located on Calle 8 to talk about their dreams as aspiring writers. They pooled all their skills and creative energy to organize Write-Ins, Critique Sessions, Spoken Word & Literary Reading Nights, the Write Out Loud Tent at Miami Book Fair International, Author Panels on publishing, a writers retreat at The Standard Hotel and a literary exhibition at Art Basel 2009. Since then, Angello Pizarro became the “communications ninja” for the group, managing 400+ Facebook members, and Jose Javier Rodriguez serves as the group’s soul searcher.

Metro 1 Green Building Resource Center
Dedicated to educating the community on green building services, products, practices and principles.

Miami 21 ‘Town Hall’ Information Series with guest speaker Francisco Garcia Iglesias – Part I
February 11, 2010 6:00PM-8:00PM
-Metro 1 Properties, Inc. – 120 NE 27th Street Suite 200 – Miami, FL 33137

The Metro 1 Green Building Resource Center invites you to learn more about Miami 21 with guest speaker Francisco Garcia Iglesias. The presentation will discuss Miami 21 in a two-part series covering the topics below. Guests are welcome to ask questions and voice opinions in this ‘town hall’ series.

About Miami 21: Miami has been engaged over the last five years in a wholesale restructuring of its development regulations. The result of these efforts, a code and development plan named Miami 21 was approved in September, 2009 and will complete the adoption process in 2010. The adoption of Miami 21 signals a drastic break with Euclidian zoning. Euclidian or use-based zoning has held sway over American development for nearly 90 years; it has resulted in the wholesale deterioration of urban centers and brought about the dominance of the suburb as the default housing habitat for Americans.

Miami 21 can be termed diversely a form-based code, a transect-based code, a sequential growth code or an infrastructure-based code. Most importantly, it departs from legalistic concepts of buffering and use segregation and promotes sustainable development through the implementation of planning well established principles:
– Walkability and pedestrian oriented development.
– Neighborhood-based urban structure as opposed to a corridor-based suburban structure
– Integration of complementary uses and densification of areas properly served by public transit
– Gradual transition between development intensities to generate harmony and maintain property value
– Qualitative evaluation of development according to sustainability criteria requiring compliance with well-established environmental principles
– Predictability of development parameters by using net lot area and gross floor area based formulae as opposed to gross floor area and net floor area
– Reduction of bureaucratic processes by reducing reliance on public hearing / adversarial permitting

Miami 21 is the first city-wide development code to adopt this methodology in a major urban area. The creation, design and implementation of Miami 21 have become a nation-wide case study, a precedent of sustainable regulation intended as model and precedent for American cities.

The Wallflower Gallery Organizational Meeting – We Need To Move 2/1/10

From Flash at Wallflower Gallery
The Wallflower Gallery Organizational Meeting 02-01-10
WE NEED TO MOVE

Hello, Everybody, how’s it going? I wanted to reach out and see what we can do together to save and revitalize The Wallflower Gallery. This is a group project, so if we want to have an artistic and creative community space in Miami, The Wallflower Gallery can be that platform.

I was recently informed by the landlord that he plans to tear down the building as soon as possible – he mentioned April, but I think we can delay it if we can get some money to him. This money will buy us the time to transition smoothly.

For almost 13 years, The Wallflower Gallery has stood as a place for musicians to play, for poets to share their poems, for visual artists to display their pieces, for independent film makers to showcase films and videos, for actors to act, as well as host a larger assortment of creative showcases. In addition, we have worked with a variety of community organizations to help with local issues, programs for young people, alternative transportation, animal rights, environmental causes, marijuana laws reform, secular humanism, electoral campaigns and many other causes. Even now as we are struggling to keep the business alive, we are giving support to the people of Haiti and we have hosted a collection event – overall it is about compassion. Now it is time to focus a campaign on The Wallflower Gallery.

I am calling for an Organizational Meeting on Monday, February 1 – 7:00 p.m. to discuss what we can do to bring ideas together. I will lay out the details of the situation and see what we as a group can do with suggestions. Bring your cash, checkbooks and credit cards to contribute some financial support. Donations can also go through PayPal on our website – www.wallflowergallery.com – other information will be posted there as well. If we don’t get the financial resources to make this happen, it won’t work.

Now the large task at hand is to generate money to cover the expenses in the current location and find a new location that will have to be set up to meet the needs of the business. In addition, there needs to be an accounting of the inventory and make sure that the items get back to the various artists and any balances due are covered.

I would like to take this opportunity to change the current dynamics. We need to create an active Board of Directors who can work together to organize the various aspects of The Wallflower Gallery and establish a better system to manage the whole operation. Part of this includes establishing a non-profit organization to work with tax-deductible donations.

The Wallflower Gallery brings to the table a strong talent base, a hefty database of connections, a good reputation, lots of experience and a kick-ass sound system. This is the starting point for the new phase of The Wallflower Gallery.

If The Wallflower Gallery fades, there is not another business of its kind waiting in the wings. We are not a simple CD store, art gallery, coffee shop or venue. We are more than those elements and as a community center we have always reached out to younger people to include them and feature their talents.

We have had people from all over the world come to The Wallflower Gallery and remark how unique and cozy the space is. People are always saying that there is nothing in Miami like it. At the same time, they wish they had a place like this where they lived.

This is our opportunity to come together and make something happen that will enrich our community in many ways. We are here to represent South Florida and our creative and progressive spirits, so let’s make it happen!

Let’s see what we can do together. More information will follow.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
Thank you for your effort.
PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD & GET OTHERS INVOLVED
Hope all’s well.
Enjoy

SeminArt Art and Ideas Exhibit at the Public Library 1/27/10

Art and Ideas: Exhibiting at the Public Library

Public libraries were Miami’s original alternative exhibition spaces. Since the 1960s, local, national and international artists and curators have worked with the Miami-Dade Public Library System. Public libraries are well-used civic and community spaces. As the context for art and exhibitions, libraries can challenge artists to experiment and think about their work in new and different ways.

The Miami-Dade Public Library System accepts proposals for exhibitions, performance art and site-specific installations in all media. Its exhibition program includes contemporary art, material culture, folk art and art education (for example, exhibitions of student work organized by teachers or other educators), as well as exhibitions in the humanities about literary, historical, cultural, and interdisciplinary topics.

As Library Curator, Denise Delgado oversees the Art Services and Exhibitions Department at MDPLS, manages an exhibition program for the 48-branch system, develops public programs, acquires new work for the Library’s permanent art collection, and oversees its care and management. At this SeminArt, we’ll talk about the opportunities and resources available to artists through MDPLS, the upcoming Call for Proposals (deadline: March 10), the exhibition process, and more.

Denise will be available for specific questions at the end of the program. Stick around to meet other artists and community leaders—LegalArt SeminArts are great networking opportunities!

SEMINAR: “Do-It-Yourself: Using Video to Gain Exposure and Build Community,” with video marketing expert Jessica Kizorek.

Video cameras are cheaper and more integrated in daily life than ever before. Just as digital photos have proliferated the way we communicate, video will reach a huge saturation rate in 2010.

Learn how to use the technology at your finger tips to create video communications that impact and build relationship with your target market. Watch the coolest gadgets in action and see successful case studies that increased sales by employing online video.

Video increases response rates when you learn how to use it to your advantage. YouTube has exploded as an online portal, but other social media platforms – Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Ning — make it easier than ever to send and receive videos through the Internet.

The seminar is free for both members and nonmembers; RSVP to enjoy a free drink and appetizers.

About Jessica Kizorek:

Jessica Kizorek is a keynote speaker, Internet video expert and the respected author of three books on the subject of video marketing and the Internet. Jessica Kizorek has made it her mission to keep marketers in the loop with her keynote speeches and seminars on the latest in online video, online branding, consumer marketing trends, plus how social media marketing can be a valuable channel within integrated marketing campaigns.

Jessica has produced video content on all seven continents and was nominated as one of CNN’s “Young People Who Rock” for her passion in documenting the impact of humanitarian efforts around the globe. Jessica Kizorek has been invited to deliver keynote speeches about online video, video marketing and Internet fundraising for many corporate meetings, trade associations, national conferences and non-profit groups.

Since graduating Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Colorado, Jessica Kizorek’s company (The Viral Pulse – www.TheViralPulse.com) has produced video and digital media for clients such as Bacardi, Hyatt Hotels and Moet Hennessy.

As an adjunct professor at the prestigious Miami Ad School, Jessica Kizorek has also been published as an expert in the online video marketing field by industry journals such as The American Association of Advertising Agencies, MediaPost and iMedia Connection.

Located in the heart of Miami’s Design District, PressitOn Art Gallery is a 3,000 square-foot space showcasing a thought-provoking roster of contemporary paintings and photography by emerging and established artists from around the world. The result is a thrilling and provocative compilation by an array of artists largely unknown to South Florida audiences whose explorations examine both our shared environment and a more intimate sense of self.

PressitOn Art Gallery is deeply committed to humanitarian causes that seek to ease the plight of the disenfranchised and vulnerable. As such, we donate a portion of the proceeds raised during each exhibition to a charitable organization. olga_06
The Frost Art Museum Presents The Green Critics’ Lecture Series with guest speaker
Olga Viso.

The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum’s Steven & Dorothea Green Critics’ Lecture Series welcomes Olga Viso, director of the Walker Art Center, for a lecture on Friday, January 29 at 7:30 pm. This free event will take place at the Wertheim Performing Arts Center at FIU’s Maidique Campus and is open to the public.

Olga Viso began her tenure as director of the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, in January 2008, after 12 years at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution, the final two years as director. Viso distinguished herself as a curator, scholar, and administrator at the Smithsonian Institution and rose quickly to leadership at the Hirshhorn.

Under her tenure, the Hirshhorn shifted its focus to present a decidedly more contemporary program of international art produced in all media. She organized or co-organized significant exhibitions of leading artists such as Ana Mendieta (2004), Juan Muñoz (2001), and Robert Gober’s highly celebrated installation at the 2001 Venice Biennale, as well as group shows, including Distemper: Dissonant Themes in the Art of the 1990s (1996) and Regarding Beauty: A View of the Late Twentieth Century (1999), which she co-curated with Neal Benezra. Viso currently serves on the advisory board of the Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia and the Cintas Foundation in New York City, two non-profit organizations that support emerging artists and the production of new art through artist residencies and fellowships.

Since 1981, The Frost Art Museum has enhanced its exhibitions and educational programs with the Steven & Dorothea Green Critics’ Lecture Series, which has introduced numerous art world luminaries to the South Florida community. Internationally renowned artists, museum curators, scholars and critics have spoken on a variety of art topics to audiences of over 800. Past speakers have included: Claes Oldenburg, Philippe de Montebello, Alex Katz, Maya Lin, Terry Gross and Marina Abramovic.

About the Frost Art Museum – Florida International University

ART BLOGGERS PANELIZE AT ART MIAMI 2009
Panel to be held Saturday, December 5th 11:00am to 2:00pm
In the Midtown Miami Arts District

Art Bloggers @, an organization founded by Sharon Butler and Joanne Mattera in 2007, is hosting a panel discussion at Art Miami on Saturday, December 5th from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. Entitled, “Beyond Basic Blogging: Carving Our Niche in the Blogosphere,” the panel will discuss developments in art blogging from the past year. Participating panelists include: Sharon Butler, Thomas Hollingworth, Paddy Johnson, Carolina A. Miranda, and Hrag Vartanian. Joanne Mattera will be the moderator. The event will be held in the Art Miami Pavilion on Midtown Boulevard (NE 1st Avenue) between NE 31st and NE 32nd Streets.

With conventional print media in decline, art blogging has filled an unexpected niche. Armed with free or low-cost web hosting and a raft of photographs and videos from tiny cameras (sometimes even cell phones), art bloggers are posting reviews, reports, interviews, opinions, advice, links, and Tweets. Bloggers are not The New York Times. And that’s precisely their power. In an art world chronically short on coverage, they are covering events – often from an artist’s perspective – with a democratic and regional take on who, what and where. The best of the art bloggers have carved out identities with defined points of view, good writing, and you-are-there pictures.

About the Panelists:
Sharon Butler, an artist and writer, maintains the art blog Two Coats of Paint, and writes for The Brooklyn Rail. In July 2009, she started @ Bushwick & Main, an online photographic sketchbook that features iPhone notations from her wandering art practice.

Thomas Hollingworth is a graduate of London Guildhall University who now lives and works in Miami. In addition to teaching and coordinating exhibitions on behalf of Miami Dade College he is the editor of Artlurker, a Miami based contemporary art blog that he founded in 2008. By documenting local, national and international cultural subjects and involving the local community for the local community Artlurker functions as both resource and a platform representative of the relative accessibility of Miami’s art scene.

Paddy Johnson is Art Fag City.

Joanne Mattera is a studio painter and occasional curator who maintains the Joanne Mattera Art Blog to record and share what she’s seeing in the New York galleries, at the art fairs, and in galleries and studios around the country. Though the blog’s description is “Guaranteed Biased, Myopic, Incomplete and Journalistically Suspect,” she is in fact journalistically responsible (though, OK, she’s biased toward painting and sculpture). She recently instituted Marketing Mondays, a weekly feature that helps emerging and midcareer artists navigate the art world.

Carolina A. Miranda is a freelance writer and editor based in New York City, where she contributes articles on travel and culture to a variety of national and regional media, including ArtNews, nytimes.com, Fast Company, Travel + Leisure and Time magazine. She is also a contributor to Lonely Planet guidebooks, having covered destinations such as Costa Rica, Mexico and Peru for the company. Last fall, she was named one of eight fellows in the USC Annenberg/Getty Arts Journalism Program for her cultural blog C-Monster.net, which, among other media, has received mentions in the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times. She lives in New York City.

Hrag Vartanian is a New York-based writer and critic. His work has appeared in the Art21 blog, the Brooklyn Rail, the New York Foundation for the Arts Current, Huffington Post and Modern Painters. He writes a street art column named Re:Public, which will soon be part of his latest project, hyperallergic (subtitled “sensitive to art and its discontents”).

About Art Bloggers @:
Art Bloggers @ is an ad hoc project founded by Sharon Butler and Joanne Mattera. Recognizing that artists and art bloggers need an opportunity to connect in real time and space, Butler and Mattera organize blogger gatherings at events in Miami and New York City.

About Art Miami:
Art Miami is the city’s longest running contemporary art fair and considered one of the most important venues for modern and contemporary art in the U.S. It is scheduled to take place December 2-6th in the Midtown Miami Arts District, adjacent to the Miami Design District and Wynwood Arts District, and will feature works from more than 80 national and international contemporary art galleries. For additional information, visit www.art-miami.com.

Organic Hip Hop 2009 Survival Skills 101 11/20-21/09

Organic Hip Hop 2009
“Survival Skills 101“
November 20 – 21, 2009

2009 marks the 6th Anniversary of Organic Hip Hop. In numerology, the number 6 symbolizes peace, family and harmony, which are the principles that Organic Hip Hop have been founded upon. In its mission to continue producing events that inspire practical and healthy thinking, eating and living in these troubling economic times, Organic Hip Hop 2009’s theme is “Survival Skills 101,” sponsored by Difference Makers Non-Profit Organization and Urban America Newspaper.
For the past five years the Organic Hip Hop Conference has been a leading voice in advocating healthy living through Hip Hop culture. Birthed in activism, past Organic Hip Hop events featured KRS One, Professor Griff, Queen Afua and Supa Nova Slom, Brother J (of X Clan), Davey D, and Dr. Laila O. Afrika and promoted Hip Hop as a culture and force for local and global change.
Organic Hip Hop 2009 begins on Friday, November 20th at 7 PM in Miami’s historic African Heritage Cultural Arts Center, in the heart of Miami’s Liberty City community highlighted with a key note address by award-winning lecturer/author, martial artist and co-founder of the Hip Hop Chess Federation (HHCF) Adisa Banjoko. In Banjoko’s devotion to youth programs (which are being chopped and sacrificed nationwide) he states, “Despite the school system’s best efforts and intentions… the past generations have suffered from lack of suitable education and essential resources required for a successful life.” He adds, “We recognize that chess, martial arts and hip-hop unify people from multiple cultural, religious and social backgrounds. These black and white squares do not care what color you are or if you are rich or poor. The only thing they ask is that you come with your strategy, your patience and your skills.” Banjoko’s address will center on the importance of developing tactful strategies for the survival of local communities and how important the growth and development of the youth are in community survival. In addition to the keynote address, several Hip Hop pioneers, politicians, media, and community leaders will be honored for their work. The Organic Hip Hop Honorees include Ray Dominguez of the Write Side Poets, DJ Snowhite, DJ Raw, Mecca AKA Grimo, Miami Light Project, Rep. James Bush, Jerry Rushin, Commissioner Dennis Moss and Bro. Rasul Hakim Muhammad of the Overtown Peace Makers Project. Admission for the evening is $12 ($10 with two canned goods). As in past Organic Hip Hop Events, a delectable vegetarian dinner will be included with the admission fee. Proceeds will benefit Difference Makers Non-Profit Educational Programs.
The following morning, on Saturday, November 21 at 10 AM, Organic Hip Hop will host its very first Youth Summit. The summit will be taking place at the landmark Dr. William A. Chapman House, in the parking lot of Overtown’s historic Booker T. Washington Senior High School. The summit will include a free “Chess as Life Strategy” workshop by Adisa Banjoko as well as presentations by community leaders dedicated to educating on practical urban farming and healthy living. This event is sponsored by Difference Makers Non-Profit Organization, The Booker T. Washington Senior High School Chess Club, and Urban America Newspaper.
The conference wraps up Saturday night at the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center at 7 pm with an artist showcase highlighting great talent brewing in South Florida’s vibrant community. Featured in the lineup are legendary poets The Sol Griots, Kimani Kenyata, and The Write Side Poets (of MTV fame). The Sasa African Dance Theatre will dazzle with their moves from the motherland and MCs La Guardia, LOX Tha Rippa, Coppa Stone, Emoni Love, Haiti Blues and Sekajipo will rock the mic (like it should be done.) The Heart Breakerz B-Girl Crew will add their acrobatic element to the extravaganza that is headlined by the female phenom Soulflower. On the turntables will be Brimstone 127. Admission is $7 ($5 with two canned goods). Proceeds will benefit Difference Makers Non-Profit Educational Programs. This is a family friendly event and all are more than welcome.

Moroccan Writer Abdellah Taia at Books and Books 11/11/09

Miami Logo2
MOROCCAN WRITER ABDELLAH TAIA @ BOOKS AND BOOKS
265 Aragon Avenue, Coral Gables
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2009, 6:30 P.M.

MOROCCAN WRITER ABDELLAH TAIA will present the recent English and Spanish translations of his novel Salvation Army. He will discuss his work with Ralph Heyndels and Gema Perez (University of Miami) during this trilingual event (English, Spanish, French).
Abdellah Taia is a young Moroccan writer and intellectual figure living in Paris and writing in French. He is the author of several novels, most recently L’Armée du Salut and Une Mélancolie arabe (Éditions du Seuil), the co-author with Frédéric Mitterand of the texts of a photography book entitled Maroc 1900-1960 (Actes Sud), and the editor and introducer of Lettres à un jeune Marocain (Éditions du Seuil). As the first openly gay writer intervening publicly in Morocco itself (actually the first in the entire Arab world) and whose novels are distributed in that country, he has been ranked by the influential Moroccan weekly magazine Tel Quel as one of the three “icons” of contemporary Moroccan culture and society. He is also a vigorous defender of tolerance, cultural and civic openness, democracy and human rights in his native country and everywhere. Novels by Abdellah Taia have already been translated in Spanish, Dutch and Italian, and Salvation Army just appeared in English, translated by Frank Stock and prefaced by Edmund White, at M.I.T. Press. Taia’s “calmly transgressive work” has been recognized as a “major addition to the new French literature emerging from the North African Arabic diaspora”, as it combines narrative and rhetorical complexity with the subjective genuine tonality of personal story telling and auto-fictional apparent confession.
This is a novel about love in all his forms. A Moroccan boy’s love for his mother (.)The boy’s love for his older brother (.) About the boy’s love of the French language and literature (.) This is (.) a book about the love of men for men(.) This a book about a boy’s love for his past. This is also a book about fear. (.) If the secret of great fiction (.) is “defamiliarization”, making everything known seem strange, then nothing could be more accomplished and persuasive than this mysterious novel. The boy himself is foreign to us, our world is foreign to him, everyone is a foreigner in love with the “other” (whether that be a Swiss man or an older brother). Despite the simplicity and clarity of Taia’s style, we sense how sophisticated he is – that this is a simplicity that only intelligence (.) can buy. Not only has the language been chastened, but the selection of scenes to show and to exclude has also been subjected to a draconian editing process. Finally, this is a book about poverty. About sexual tourism, its benign side (.) and its cruel side. But Abdellah Taïa doesn’t spell this out. His is an ecstatic and generous nature who lives in the particular, who shies away from generalizations. No matter how often he might be disappointed or wounded he is ever (.) prepared to receive that wonderful, transforming thing: reciprocal affection. This book is a clear stream; drink from it deeply. Edmund White
This event is organized in conjunction with the U.M. Department of Modern Languages and Literatures and the French Cultural Services (Miami office), with the support of the U.M. Queer Studies Research Group and the U.M. Africana Studies Program, along with the Alliance Française de Miami-Fort Lauderdale.. Open to the public. Free admission.

Global Warming: Science, economy, politics and te future of the planet
Wednesday October 28, 7pm
Lecturer: Daniel Mira, PhD. in Chemical Engineering
World Bank Department of Climate Change for Latin America
Coordinator: Pere Estunpinyá
In Spanish
At CCEMiami. Free Admission

CCEMiami will switch the way we look at science in Miami with the new conference series “Did you know?” that will feature science related activities in an environment that will forever change how we see that subject. Guided by a group of US resident Hispanic researchers we will learn that science is neither a difficult discipline nor a boring one and that is not reserve for just a few alienated beings. Quite the contrary, it can truly engross the audiences if transmitted with passion and closeness.
Science is the most intellectual adventure of the Century. Unfortunately the main characters are not prone to leave their labs and share with society their fascinating knowledge on cosmology, neuroscience, environment, biomedicine or technological revolution.
In “Did you know?” we will discuss climatic changes, new energies, human behavior, evolution, the state of our oceans, genetic revolution, the year of astronomy, science and cooking and many other subjects that will convince participants that science could be as beautiful and interesting as art, literature or film. The series is coordinated by Pere Estupinyà, Estupinyà is a Chemist and Biochemist from Spain who, after a short time as a PhD researcher, moved to science journalism. He has been the editor of REDES, the leading Spanish television program on science, and lectured in Science, Technology and Society at the Ramon Llull University. In 2007-2008 he spent one academic year at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University as a Knight Science Journalism Fellow. He writes about science for different Spanish publications, collaborates on radio programs, gives conferences, and owns an acclaimed scientific blog in El Pais (link: http://lacomunidad.elpais.com/apuntes-cientificos-desde-el-mit/). He lives in Washington DC while working at the National Institutes of Health and writing as a freelance journalist for various Spanish and US media outlets.
The first conference, to be held on October 28 with scientist Daniel Mira from the World Bank will feature interesting data on climatic change and a closer look at how it is impacting Miami as well as Latin America.

David Castillo Gallery Artist Talk: Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova 10/3/09

castillo
David Castillo Gallery Artist Talk: Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova, Saturday, October 3, 2009 3 pm SHARP!
David Castillo Presents
Artist Talk: Leyden Rodriguez- Casanova
You might sleep, but you will never dream
Please join us at David Castillo Gallery for an artist talk and walk-through of You might sleep, but you will never dream, Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova’s second solo exhibition with the gallery. The artist will begin at 3 pm sharp with a walk-through of the exhibition, which is to be followed by a brief question and answer session.
We look forward to seeing you on Saturday!
The artist uses a vocabulary of domestic objects and suburban architectural elements as a visual language, addressing our social, cultural and emotional existence. He uses material appropriations first introduced in post-minimal and conceptual art. Rodriguez-Casanova is presenting a series of objects that use a room as the point of departure for his concepts. All the objects are elements of a room which have been detached from their original context.
As the title of Damien Hirst’s work suggests, The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living, Rodriguez-Casanova is interested in understanding the loss of someone, including one’s self (and the “impossibility” of such). In the work An Open Door, 2008 commissioned for the Dennis and Debra Scholl Collection, the artist built an entirely new wall with a blackout doorway created by a black sheet of plexi. The opening becomes a metaphor for what lies beyond our existence. This same element exits in A Folded Bed, 2009 in which a portable folding bed is intersected by a large sheet of the same black plexi. The black plane once more is a metaphor for a void. In A Bedroom Floor, 2009 the artist has recreated the exact tile grid of his adolescent bedroom floor. A nod to Carl Andre, the work uses its own detachment and “negative space” properties to focus on the floor and its plight in its original context.
Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova lives and works in Miami, and has exhibited nationally and internationally. His work has been featured in publications such as Art in America, ARTnews, and Sculpture Magazine. Miami21 is an urban planning document for the City of Miami. It is supposed to create a greener, more people-friendly City. There is a lot to like about the “big picture” objectives.
**
The Devil is in the Details, however. The City has an old tradition of making deals that are against the public’s good.
**
It is up to YOU, the resident, to be sure that when they say it is “Your City, Your Plan” that this is true.
People participating makes a HUGE difference in the results. Numbers matter: the more, the better.
**
To see current planning documents, check out:
www.miami21.org
Familiarize yourself with areas and issues that matter to you, your friends and family.
**
For any questions, please call the Miami 21 hotline at (305) 416-2121
**
It is a minute’s walk to Scotty’s Landing for burgers, dolphin sandwiches and beverage breaks.
**
There is public bus transportation from UM and Brickell/Downtown (48 Bus), and from MetroRail (Grove Circulator).

About:
Educate Tomorrow, Corp. is an international, nonprofit, certified 501(c)(3) organization. All over the world, poverty denies children, as well as adults, the promises of a better tomorrow. Forgotten by society and social welfare programs, children born into poverty are trapped in a cruel and often violent cycle that frequently continues for generations. Lacking the inspiration, confidence, knowledge, and means to change, entire families are lost to the cycle of hopelessness.

Educate Tomorrow believes that the best way to end the cycle of poverty is through education. Our mission is to make education an attainable goal for the most disadvantaged in our world, so that all may be afforded the possibilities that can be achieved through learning. We strive to reach out to these individuals and provide them inspiration, guidance, and support and lead them on the path of life-long learning.

Educate Tomorrow’s primary mission in the US is to provide one-on-one educational mentors to foster care children that are turning 18 and “aging out” of the system. Since its founding in 2003, Educate Tomorrow has successfully implemented its mentoring programs, education programs and life skills camps across the nation. Additionally, it has reached internationally by continuing to support the work of it’s founders who established one of the first local language primary schools, adult literacy programs and boarding schools in the remote and impoverished village of Kabey Fo in Niger, West Africa.

Workshop with artist Fritz Haeg’s Salon Colada 7/25/09

Convention_SalonColada_evite2
Fritz Haeg engages in diverse artistic and curatorial practices that challenge the everyday. His work has been shown at the Whitney Biennial in New York and Tate Modern in London, and he is the author of Edible Estates: Attack on the Front Lawn and The Sundown Salon Unfolding Archive.

Join artist Fritz Haeg as he discusses his project Salon Colada: Miami HQ, an installation and series of salon discussions he initiated for the exhibition, CONVENTION. Also present will be Keith Waddington and Mindy Nelson, the Coral Gables couple who are hosting the salons in their home while their living room contents are being displayed at MOCA. Los Angeles-based artist, architect and designer Haeg engages in diverse artistic and curatorial practices that include designing houses, facilitating grassroots political activism, and experimenting in radical gardening. Rejecting categorization and specialization, Haeg is attracted to multidisciplinary projects that manifest as social opportunities and inspirational models.
Fritz Haeg has been exhibited at the 2008 Whitney Biennial in New York, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Contemporary Art Museum Baltimore, and the Tate Modern in London. This month, Haeg has published an artist book The Sundown Salon Unfolding Archive, a comprehensive account of a series of salons he held in Los Angeles from 2001-2006 that will be for sale in the MOCA Shop. The salons’ exchange of ideas and art through events, gatherings, and performances came to represent an alternative model to the isolated solitary practice of creating in a private studio or office and became a celebration of communal response to a common purpose and specific environment. Haeg is also the author of Edible Estates: Attack on the Front Lawn (2008) which chronicled the conversion of several sod lawns of private homes into productive vegetable gardens.

Imagine Miami Changemaker Conference II Placemaking at Miami Dade College Wolfson Campus 7/18/09

IM_ChangeConf_FrontWeb
How Local Residents Can Create Better Parks, Beaches, Blocks and Other Public Spaces “Placemaking” is Focus of Upcoming Imagine Miami Changemaker Conference II

The second in a three-year series, the Imagine Miami Changemaker Conference II on July 18, 2009 focuses on the power of place. Local residents will learn how to create and sustain the public spaces that build community, from community gardens to family-friendly parks and city blocks. Presented by the Human Services Coalition (HSC), the event will be held in downtown Miami at Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus, in the Chapman Conference Center, from 9:30 am – 5:30 pm. To pre-register (deadline July 10), residents can go to www.imaginemiami.org or call (305) 576-5001.

“By bringing together more than 200 aspiring, emerging and seasoned community leaders from diverse backgrounds, including participants in HSC’s civic programs,” says Imagine Miami director Corinna Moebius, “we’ll cross-fertilize good ideas and practices and inspire people with real-life examples of how residents are transforming local places. We’ll also help people connect with each other and with specific opportunities.”

Participants will learn to use innovative place-related tools and approaches for advocacy, resident engagement and community development, including community mapping and GIS, asset mapping, and placemaking tools developed by Project for Public Spaces (PPS). PPS (pps.org) has worked in 2,000 communities in 26 countries around the world, helping people turn their public spaces into vital community places, with programs, uses, and people-friendly settings that build local value and serve community needs. Hands-on workshops will be led by Cynthia Nikitin of PPS (pps.org), Dwayne Marsh of PolicyLink (policylink.org), Delia Caderno of Partnership for Community Transformation and Jacqueline Sartan of the University of Miami. In the placemaking workshop, residents will break into groups and use the PPS Place Evaluation tool to evaluate specific sites in downtown Miami.

Conference attendees can win $500 for their local place-based project (like a community garden). Local groups have until July 1 to submit a one-page proposal to create/improve a local public space. During the conference, attendees will vote for one of ten semi-finalist proposals. The three finalists will have five minutes each to pitch their project during the conference, with additional time to answer questions from a panel of judges and conference attendees. Judges include Charles Auslander of The Children’s Trust, Kris Smith of the Funders’ Network for Smart Growth and Livable Communities, Cynthia Nikitin and Corinna Moebius.

Funded by The Children’s Trust and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the conference is designed to be family friendly. Eco-educational activities for kids will take place all day, led by Kiki Mutis (Director of the Community Science Workshop at Citizens for a Better South Florida) and environmental educator Sofie Geckler. Near the close of the conference, kids will share their own ideas for better neighborhoods with the rest of the attendees. Parents can bring children 5 and up for no extra cost, and up to 80 parents are eligible for a discounted $5 registration fee if they apply by July 3rd . The regular conference price is $25.

Other conference highlights include a keynote presentation by Cynthia Nikitin, a World Café dialogue on creating family-friendly neighborhoods, hands-on demonstrations of online mapping tools (e.g., policylink.org and the Children’s Trust’s KidsMap), exhibits showcasing local place-related projects, a video Story Booth (courtesy of WPBT’s uvuvideo.org), and a culminating drumming activity led by local artist/activist Lela Lombardo.

Following the conference, participants can continue their connection and collaboration with local changemakers via our “Community Cafes”: neighborhood-based dialogues led by local residents trained in community dialogue techniques. They can also connect via our online civic network (imaginemiami.ning.com), and continue building skills, awareness and connections via HSC’s advocacy and leadership programs and workshops.

About the Changemaker Conference Series
HSC launched its three-year series of Changemaker Conferences (two a year) in response to the success of its 2008 Imagine Miami Summit on Arts, Culture & Civic Engagement, which South Florida residents described as uplifting, connecting, energizing and transformative. The series is part of HSC’s broader strategy to cultivate networks of trust (social capital) and increase residents’ capacity to be catalysts for participatory, community change. They are also an important vehicle for connecting the emerging leaders participating in HSC’s civic programs, including Public Allies Miami-Dade, Parent Leadership Training Institute (PLTI), Advocacy Corps Training (ACT), Neighborhood Leadership Program, Creative Impact and Imagine Miami. Through the civic programs of HSC, single parents, minority youth, immigrants, low-income residents and others have become leaders in their communities.

The conferences build upon each other, and each increases awareness and knowledge of particular techniques, success stories and opportunities. The first conference (April 4, 2009) focused on asset-based approaches (leveraging community strengths); storytelling for social impact; and community dialogue techniques. By 2011, we expect at least 1,000 local residents to become champions for civic engagement and community involvement in South Florida.

A committee of hard-working and dedicated volunteers, interns and contributing HSC staff has been meeting weekly to help Imagine Miami director Corinna Moebius plan the conference. Core volunteers include Sam Van Leer of Urban Paradise Guild, Linda McGlathery of the Garden Project, Harold Silva of Miami Dade College, Roger Horne of Belafonte TACOLCY youth center, Brad Knoefler of the Omni/Park West Redevelopment Association and Luz Agudelo, an HSC Public Ally who works with Little Havana residents. Interns include Alexandra Torres and Julia Atkinson.

In-kind support is provided by Miami Dade College and uVu (www.uvuvideo.org, the community video project of local public TV station WPBT).

About the Human Services Coalition (HSC) and Imagine Miami
Founded in 1995, the Human Services Coalition (HSC) identifies and launches innovative strategies to help people and communities thrive. HSC works through a network of partner organizations, linking people with financial education, healthcare information, public benefits and educational and economic opportunities. HSC’s programs promote economic self- sufficiency, participation in civic life and respect across many divides.

HSC inspires people to get involved and prepares them to step up to leadership roles that lead to long-term community transformation. As we learn to live and work together, we find common purpose and build a more just and inclusive society.

The Imagine Miami (IM) initiative was founded by HSC President and CEO Daniella Levine, and has grown into a “civic network” of local changemakers. IM connects people through the Changemaker conferences and other workshops, its online civic network (imaginemiami.ning.com), and special guides to local resources (see www.imaginemiami.org).

The goals for the Master Planning process are to develop a viable waterfront with public open space areas; develop policies for the use of the waterfront; develop and manage the land; and provide for the protection and enhancement of the natural resources with the necessary infrastructure and traffic flow to serve future development within the Marine Stadium Basin properties on the island.

Additionally, the proposed Virginia Key Master Plan should emphasize the opportunities for mixed-use waterfront development, including the redevelopment of the properties along the Marine Stadium Basin, integrate and recommend improvements to the existing Sewage Treatment Plant, integrate and preserve the historic Virginia Key Beach Park, as well as make recommendations for future island wide improvements and the protection of the remaining public beaches, parks and conservation areas.

Start Up Weekend The Launch Pad University of Miami 6/5-7/09

If you are a startup or self employed you must come to this event! Here is some info about what to expect:

Startup Weekend recruits a highly motivated group of developers, business managers, startup enthusiasts, marketing gurus, graphic artists and more to a 54 hour event that builds communities, companies and projects. Founded in 2007 by Andrew Hyde, the weekend is a concept of a conference focusing on learning by creating. It is known for its quick decisions, ‘out of the box’ thinking (oh no, the buzzwords are attacking!), unique facilitation technique and letting the founders show what they can do.

The participants that attend a Startup Weekend decide what they want to tackle over the weekend and come out at the end with several developed companies or projects. Attendees are responsible for bringing the same desire and passion to the project and walk out of the room with the task at hand, in a short 54 hours. Sound intense? It is.

StartUp Weekend is open to the public.

This is an excellent opportunity to get your hands dirty starting your very own companies!

“A Penetrable such as this one in Wynwood opens up a new experience of an aesthetic nature because it deals with moving space. Whether it is us, or the wind blowing that provokes it, the visual and imaginary reality it offers us is like an illuminating path, or Tao. How this illumination is produced depends on the willingness of whoever agrees to experience it. But what we do not doubt is that the challenge he throws at us to change our pre-conceived opinions regarding reality, is sufficient to encourage us to travel the path proposed by him.
Whoever experiences the sensation of finding him / herself within a living object such as Soto’s Penetrables, would then understand the intimate meaning of his work’s poetic structure. Those vibrant rods—all blue, in this case—reveal to us a reality that we forget but which exists deep in our traditional culture, as expressed by the Egyptian and the Greek: nothing is static, life is movement. “ Carlos M. Luis.

Lecture – Things Looked Different Back Then: The Endless Renaissance and How All Art is Contemporary
Thursday, May 28th, 7:00pm
Visual experience, it turns out, has evolved over time. This means that we cannot think of art as a single ‘problem’ expressed to better and worse degrees in different times and places – instead, we need to see that the Renaissance is truly endless, with constant re-discoveries of “new ways of seeing.”
This lecture will introduce key aspects of the visual culture of the Renaissance and Baroque periods as a means of thinking differently about how contemporary art and art of the Renaissance have more in common than meets the eye.
Guest curator Steven Holmes has curated exhibitions for The Palais de Tokyo in Paris, the Kunste-Werke Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin, as well as exhibitions throughout the United States and the Caribbean. His projects have been reviewed in The New York Times, The New Yorker Magazine, Art in America, Art Forum, Art News, Tema Celeste, Flash Art International and Art New England. His most recent book, Festschrift, was published by Leo Press in 2008. Mr. Holmes holds a MFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, and a MTS from Harvard.
Free with museum admission. Come early and view the exhibition! Galleries will stay open until 7pm.
