The North Campus of Miami Dade College has joined hands with Lions Clubs International’s District 35N to present the District’s Annual Peace Poster Competition. On Tuesday, November 23, 2010, “local district” students ages 11 through 13 years of age from some 35 different clubs, will showcase their posters before an official jury of judges from the North Campus Arts and Philosophy Department.

North Campus President, Dr. Jose A. Vicente stated, “North Campus’ place as an important convener of the arts is handsomely complemented by the opportunity to support Lions Clubs International in its worthy endeavor to develop young minds through the visual and creative arts.”

Twenty-four international finalists are selected each year, representing the work of more than 350,000 young participants worldwide. Posters are shared globally via the Internet, the media and exhibitions around the world. Posters advance through several judging levels: local, district, multiple district and international. At the international level, judges from the art, peace, youth, education and media communities select one grand prize winner and 23 merit award winners.

Lions District 35N Governor Alec Hernandez stated, “Our District 35N is a proud participant of this global competition that encourages young people worldwide to reflect on their personal life experiences and culture, and to artistically express their visions of peace through a variety of media including charcoal, crayon, pencil and paint”.

With 1722 members in a total of 74 Clubs, District 35N is bordered on the north by Sebastian, Florida, on the south by Key West, on the west by Seabring, and on the east by Freeport, Bahamas. Lions Club International is the largest volunteer organization in the world with 45,000 clubs and 1.35 million members.

Each year, in celebration of Art Basel Miami Beach, The Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University hosts an official Art Basel sponsored event, Breakfast in the Park and participates in fairs across town. This year’s Breakfast in the Park will take place on Sunday, December 5, 2010 from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Also taking place during this event will be a small celebration for The Frost Art Museum’s second anniversary in its new space, which opened to the public in 2008.

Over the years, Breakfast in the Park has grown to draw hundreds of art enthusiasts, patrons, collectors, gallery owners and artists from around the world, many of whom are visiting Miami Beach for the most prestigious art show in the United States, Art Basel. Each year a noted sculptor is invited to speak. Guests enjoy a complimentary outdoor breakfast, informal lecture and guided tours of The Sculpture Park as well as the exhibitions in The Frost Art Museum.

Now in its eighth year, Breakfast in the Park will feature an informal lecture by Enrique Martínez Celaya, whose works consists of paintings, sculpture, photography, poetry, and prose. Martínez Celaya’s work directly reflects his personal experience with a diversity of fields. His work is often characterized by solitary and autobiographical figures seemingly displaced in surreal and symbolic landscapes. Through his background in science, Martínez Celaya investigates the interaction between modern science and the subconscious is his work.

In addition to its participation with Art Basel, The Frost Art Museum has partnered with Art Miami, Red Dot, Art Asia, Pulse Art Fair, Aqua Art Fair, SCOPE and the Sagamore for its annual brunch.

Embracing Modernity: Venezuelan Geometric Abstraction that runs through January 2, 2011
This exhibition presents a historical overview of the origins of the country’s abstract movement, focusing on its early development dating from the late 1940’s to the 1970’s. The selection of works from private collections and foundations included in the exhibit document an important period of Venezuela’s art history which was instrumental in the development of Modern Art in the Americas. Paintings, sculptures, and installations, illustrate the development of Venezuelan Geometric Abstraction and Kinetic Art, and introduce many artists who contributed to the development of movement in Venezuela, unknown to the American public. The show curated by Francine Birbragher-Rozencwaig and Maria Carlota Perez features works by Carlos Cruz-Diez, Gertrude Goldschmidt (GEGO), Mateo Manaure, Alejandro Otero and Jesús Rafael Soto, among others.

Also on view is La Habana Moderna in The Wolfsonian Teaching Gallery at The Frost Art Museum. Havana is the focus of a new exhibition in the Wolfsonian Teaching Gallery at the Frost Art Museum on view in the fall of 2010. By presenting a variety of materials from the collection of The Wolfsonian-Florida International University (magazines, photography, architectural drawings, tourist ephemera, and other media), it explores how international commercial and cultural links contributed to the emergence of a modern identity for the city in the decades before the Cuban Revolution. The exhibition is made possible by financial support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. This exhibition runs through January 9, 2011

Sequentia, Xavier Cortada’s solo exhibit at the Frost Art Museum explores the sequence of events that make up life on the planet from the molecular to the monumental. The title of the exhibit also references a series of actions Cortada will set in motion to create a unique strand of DNA. The artist will work with a molecular biologist to synthesize an actual DNA strand made from a sequence generated by museum visitors using Cortada’s art. This exhibition runs through January 2, 2011

Rablaci: Metáforas del Hombre Contemporáneo in The Sculpture Park at FIU
Nature forms a substantial part in the representation of this series of works of sculpture which show the character of Rablaci’s artistic universe. These large-scale, bronze orange tree sculptures concentrate on the importance of recognizable signs and myths of natural landscapes, using an artistic language which allows for the complementarity of the figurative and the abstract, the formal and the informal, and where folds and lines can be compatible concepts in their convulsive sculptural development. This exhibition is on view December 1, 2010 through January 26, 2010.

From Old to New is an intriguing exhibition that features works attributed to Masters such as Ferdinand Bol, and large-scale works attributed to Peter Paul Rubens and Jacob Jordaens opposite contemporary works by Lydia Rubio, Frances Trombly & Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova and Carlos Estevez. The juxtaposition of new and old objects work seemlessly in the visual aesthetics of masterpieces. This exhibtion is ongoing.

Florida Artists Series: Selections from ANOMIE 1492-2006 by Arnold Mesches
Throughout his 65-year career as an artist and professor, Arnold Mesches has woven many narratives into lush and virtuosic paintings. The ANOMIE series, paintings and collages that included overt and subtle references to the overlapping histories and multi-cultural aspects of life, encompassed postmodern concepts with old master techniques and structures. In these works, large canvases of cinematic proportions, nothing is overt, images move and mingle freely through time, find their place conceptually, independent of actualities. In a broader sense, they are the conceptual admixtures of reality and the surreal Mesches has been striving for over these many years of painting and activism. This series incorporated pertinent, often disparate,historical and personal images. It seems to be a summation of Mesches’ collected views on the world’s madness and inconsistencies, on beauty and ugliness, evil and justice, on life over death. Mesches has exhibited extensively throughout the United States and abroad, most recently at PS1 Contemporary, the Museum of Modern Art affiliate. His works are included in the collections of such distinguished institutions as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery, the Whitney Museum and the Hirshhorn Museum. Mr. Mesches has recently been awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Florida in Gainesville. On view through December 5, 2010

The 37th Annual Miami Watercolor Society Fall Exhibition will be held November 5 – 26 at Artspace MAGQ, in the Falls District, 8747 SW 134th Street, Miami. About the Miami Watercolor Society
The Miami Watercolor Society has been in existence since 1974 with a membership of around 130, mostly locals but also including “snowbirds”. MWS is a volunteer-based, culturally diverse, non-profit organization. Members include students, amateurs and professionals, some of whom also teach at various sites around the county, including private studios, and public and private schools. Many members are also members of the Florida and National Watercolor Societies. Having varying styles and using watercolors to create many forms of watermedia, many MWS members have won a myriad of awards for their work.
In addition to monthly meetings at the Pinecrest community center (2nd Sunday of each month), where painting demonstrations are usually a part of the agenda, the Society holds workshops throughout the year, led by noted artists from around the country.
Two events of interest are the annual Teacher Workshop held at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, a watercolor workshop for Dade County Art Teachers in September, and, the “Annual Impressions in Watercolor”, a juried art show for students of all ages in the Miami-Dade County Public Schools, in February.
MWS also has 2 juried membership shows each year, Fall and Spring. They take place in different venues around Dade County. This fall’s exhibit will be held at Artspace MAGQ, a modern gallery, yet intimate venue, in the Falls district. The MWS Fall Exhibit will be featured in the November Falls District Gallery Walk.

Islands of the Sun is a beautifully illustrated book co-authored by young University of Miami alumni and Bahamians, John A. Thompson and Nikita Shiel-Rolle. Six chapters tour the reader through the ecosystems of the Bahamas, from the highest hilltops to the depths of the ocean. The book functions as an informative reference volume as well as a work of art, with photography and painted illustrations bringing to life the unique and diverse plants and animals of the Exuma Cays.

The culmination of a three-year effort, Islands of the Sun offers a collection of vivid photographs that depict a range of life from orchids and rock iguanas to sea slugs and reef sharks. In all, a total of 298 species of local flora and fauna are featured. Accompanying provides information about the varying species, including their historical and cultural value as food or medicine. Every chapter opens with an original two-page landscape painting of the selected habitat and its denizens. Additionally, “special focus” sections highlight plants or animals of particular interest within each habitat.

Islands of the Sun, which is dedicated to Sergio and Jacqueline Kriz Danguillecourt in celebration of the deep love they shared for the Exuma Cays, is an unprecedented fusion of science and art that is guaranteed to fascinate and educate. All proceeds from book sales support the environmental education activities of the Bahamas Marine EcoCentre, including Young Bahamian Marine Scientists after-school clubs and summer camps.

Jazz Gallery WDNA 88.9 FM presents the solo exhibition of Enrique Sendra as part of the celebrations of the National Hispanic Heritage Month.

Enrique Sendra was born in Havana, Cuba in 1982. At the age of 17, Enrique enrolled in his first professional art school, where he was able to learn art in a more structured way. He had his first solo exhibition the following year at the Amelia P�laez Gallery in Havana. That same year, Enrique Sendra immigrated to United States.

Sendra’s works are the result of a self-discovery process where his personal experiences and observations are expressed through a high level of pictorial symbolism. His paintings and works on paper resemble a sort of surrealist imagery where colors, technique and Cuban references come together. His work has been included in numerous group and solo art exhibitions and the artist has been represented by galleries such as Vincent Gallery in Miami, Florida and Boswell Mourot Fine Art in Little Rock, Arkansas. Enrique has been recognized by the Miami-Dade County and various local governments for his contribution to the Arts in the South Florida community. Today, Enrique resides in Miami, Florida and continues to grow personally and professionally through his art.

Accent Alternative Art Space to serve Miami a “Full Plate”

Thursday, October 14th Accent Alternative Art Space debuts “Full Plate”, with an opening reception from 7 to 10 p.m. Miami artist Julio Antonio will exhibit 100 ceramic plates and works on paper. Exquisite symmetrical patterns grace these ceramics, making the collection an extraordinary production inspired on the island of Cuba, the human figure and various animal forms.

Accent Alternative Art Space’s premiere exhibit, “Killing and Salting”, had an extraordinary turnout its opening night and showcased the work of emerging young artists. (See photos here.) “Full Plate” hopes to continue this momentum and carry on its non-profit’s mission to develop ideas that are outside the mainstream scope of Miami’s commercial art galleries, while harnessing local talent and culture. Julio Antonio’s distinct style falls within the scope of alternative expression that Accent Alternative Art Space strives to highlight within the community, and his work is profoundly shaped by the idea of exploring the endless possibilities to transform the commonplace into objects of beauty.

“The sheer vibrancy of this collection is testimony to the creative drive of a master craftsman in full command of his art,” said Esteban Blanco, founder of the non-profit gallery. “It is a dazzling demonstration of how to make the extraordinary seem easy.

Cuban-born artist Julio Antonio is a graduate of the Instituto Superior de Arte and the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts, Cuba. Considered a keystone integrant of the exile artist community, Julio Antonio taught many of the prominent exiled artists while a professor of Art in Havana. His work is included in the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo of Malaga, Spain, among many others. Some monotypes of the same series shown in the exhibition are part of the collection of the McArthur Foundation.

Coral-Gables based Accentmarketing continues to support its non-profit passion project by contributing the energy and creativity of its talented staff. In “The Four Nucleotides”, the artist creates large scale “portraits” of Adenine, Cytosine, Guanine and Thymine – the four bases of a DNA strand that summarize all we are, were and will be. In Sequentia, the artist invites museum visitors to randomly select a post card depicting one of Cortada’s four nucleotide oil paintings and attach it sequentially on strings hanging in the form of a helix from the exhibit gallery’s ceiling. In stringing the n ucleotides along, they develop a DNA strand as a participatory installation.�On view through January 2nd, 2011.

In La Habana Moderna, Habana is the focus of the next exhibition in The Wolfsonian Teaching Gallery at The Frost Art Museum on view in the fall of 2010. By presenting a variety of materials from the collection of The Wolfsonian-Florida International University (magazines, photography, architectural drawings, tourist ephemera, and other media), it explores how international commercial and cultural links contributed to the emergence of a modern identity for the city in the decades before the Cuban Revolution. The exhibition is made possible by financial support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. On view through January 2nd, 1011.

Drawing on The Wolfsonian’s collection of architectural materials, graphic design, and other media, La Habana Moderna explores the emergence of a modern identity for the city of Havana in the decades before the Cuban Revolution and the contribution of international commercial and cultural links. The exhibition is co-curated by Marilys Nepomechie, associate professor at the FIU School of Architecture, and made possible with financial support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. On Thursday evening, October 14, from 5 to 8 p.m., the Dixie Art Loft will open its doors with an Invitational Group Art Exhibit showcasing local celebrity, as well as newly emerging artists. The exhibit will continue through Saturday, November 20, 2010.

The Dixie Art Loft is a new gallery space created by Betty Wilson, artist and founder of the Craft Gallery. Her efforts on behalf of local and national artists have introduced new artists and their works to the Palm Beach County community for nearly three decades. This gallery will feature Exceptional Work by Exceptional Artists on a regular basis. All shows will be juried, presenting the best of what the nation and region has to offer. It will showcase ceramics, paintings, photography, sculptures, glass, jewelry and mixed media. The space is designed with the artist, the art collector and the avid art buyer in mind.

Out on a Limb is the starting point from which both literal and metaphorical art will be created. Wilson’s special talents in designing themes for her exhibits have led to an extraordinary body of work by the many artists she has presented. She has captured this work in a collection of books available to the public. They have become an almanac of the range of brilliant work created by local artists.

Come celebrate the opening reception for four major exhibitions during Target Wednesday After Hours. The Museum will feature the opening reception for Embracing Modernity: Venezuelan Geometric Abstraction; Florida Artist Series: Selections from Anomie 1492-2006 by Arnold Mesches; Xavier Cortada’s Sequentia and La Habana Moderna in the Wolfsonian Teaching Gallery at The Frost Art Museum.

This evening will also include a speed networking event, “How to Work a Room” open to all FIU Students with valid FIU ID. The presentation will begin at 5pm.
