Annette Recommends Chu’s Taiwan Kitchen and Bar

Chu’s in Coral Gables it awesome Taiwanese Restaurant.  When you go there be sure you are not in a hurry, they are a little slow but the food is worth it.    They brought us fried fish chips, that is only way for me to describe it, they were very like and really good.  I had the beef noodles and they were amazing, so yummy, in fact they were so good the next time we went back I order them again.   So far everything we have ordered has been really good, and very fresh.

Order the crispy seaweed, it’s ridiculously addictive.

Social commentary on Exhibit at Palley Pavilion
at ArtBasel/Miami Beach, December 2009

“Kitchen Dreams” –
Works in Glass by Ricky Bernstein

Considered a social satirist and visual storyteller, studio glass artist Ricky Bernstein draws the viewer into his larger-than-life cartoon dramas – a true slice of Americana.

Berstein’s work has captured those moments of frustration with the minor mishaps of modern life in oversized vibrantly colored glass cartoon wall reliefs. His blown sheet glass of painted commercial glass combines aluminum, wood, plastic, acrylic paints, color pencils and other mixed materials to create assemblages that are humorous social satires.

One man plays tug of war with his dog over a shoe, another tries to untangle himself from a telephone cord, and a woman looks in despair at a clock as she struggles to clean a never-ending pile of dirty dishes. His hilarious characters are caricatures of overworked, overwhelmed and overbooked Americans.

On exhibit during ArtBasel Miami Beach at the Lowe Art Museum on the University of Miami campus, and sponsored by Myrna and Sheldon Palley and the Art Alliance for Contemporary Glass will be “Kitchen Dreams”, an exhibit comprised of pieces that remark, with tongue firmly in cheek, about overworked, overbooked, and overwhelmed Americans. Each piece has a story to tell.

Meet the glass artist Ricky Bernstein at a cocktail party on Thursday, Dec. 3.

Bernstein describes his character as “a slice of Americana, going about their daily lives with the barest degree of composure. As they round the next corner looking warily over their shoulder, they sigh, take a deep breath and wonder what could possibly happen next. Mostly the hang on for the big ride and hope for the best.”

Inspired by the wild activity at home with his wife and two young daughters, Bernstein’s work has an underlying humanity to which everyone can relate. The work of Red Grooms, Jack Levine and Gary Larson also have a profound affect on Ricky’s work, along with the sit-com world of 50’s television a time in which he was raised. Ricky also draws influence from such painters as Thomas Hart Benton, Reginald Marsh and Paul Cadmus. His narrative, collage-style wall reliefs have a distinct “pop-art” flavor.

Bruce Pepich, 20th century Curator of the Racine Art Museum says of Ricky Bernstein: “He makes us comfortable with amusing characters while simultaneously posing serious questions in these satirical comments on modern life. Whether parody, narrative or farce, the issues Bernstein poses are well worth our serious consideration.”

Bernstein’s work is widely collected throughout the U.S. and Europe, including the Corning Museum of Glass in NY, the Museum of Arts and Design, in NYC, and the Renwick Gallery in Washington, DC.

About The Myrna and Sheldon Palley Pavilion for Contemporary Glass and Studio Art at The Lowe Art Museum on the University of Miami campus. Opened in December 2008, The Palley Pavilion displays the Palley glass collection: a collection of over 300 built over 30 years. There is currently work representing 53 different artists, including Howard Ben Tre, Jose Chardiet, Dale Chihuly, Dan Dailey, Michael Glancy, Harvey Littleton, Stephen Weinberg, Stanislav Labinsky, and Lino Tagliapietra, among others.

The Palley Pavilion at the Lowe Art Museum displays the Palley Collection on a rotating basis and features additional donations in glass, ceramics and fiber. Janet and Joseph Shein donated a larger-than-life-sized ceramic head on its own pedestal, along with its rendering, by internationally renowned ceramicist Robert Arneson, and anonymous donors donated a William Morris installation, consisting of 15 different elements, a 10 feet tall ceramic oval by Jun Kaneko, and a textile wall hanging Ken Uyemura.

Designed by Coral Gables based architect Ronald Mateu, of Mateu Architecture Inc., the light-filled 3,500 square foot Pavilion incorporates elements that show off the inherent qualities of glass.

Entrance to the Palley Pavilion is a site-specific glass installation by renowned international glass artist and UM art faculty member William Carlson. A chandelier of revolving prisms by Jon Kuhn, donated by the artist, welcomes visitors to the space, which consists of the Beaux Arts Gallery, Matus Family Gallery, the Robert and Florence Werner Showcase, each housing selections from the permanent collection in handsome display cases.

Eight niches, measuring nine feet square and situated on the south and west facing walls, contain large-scale objects in all three media, and include works by Therman Statom, Rick Beck, Clifford Rainey, Robert Palusky, and former UM art faculty members Christine Federighi, Robert Willson, and Ken Uyemura. Floor pedestals scattered throughout the pavilion showcase single objects.

The Lowe Art Museum is located at the University of Miami at 1301 Stanford Drive, Coral Gables. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 12 to 7 p.m. Thursdays and 12 to 5 p.m. Sundays. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for non-UM students with I.D., $5 for adult groups of 10 or more, $3 to student groups of 10 or more, and free to members, University of Miami students, faculty and staff, and children under age 12. Moroccan Writer Abdellah Taia at Books and Books 11/11/09

Miami Logo2
MOROCCAN WRITER ABDELLAH TAIA @ BOOKS AND BOOKS
265 Aragon Avenue, Coral Gables
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2009, 6:30 P.M.

MOROCCAN WRITER ABDELLAH TAIA will present the recent English and Spanish translations of his novel Salvation Army. He will discuss his work with Ralph Heyndels and Gema Perez (University of Miami) during this trilingual event (English, Spanish, French).
Abdellah Taia is a young Moroccan writer and intellectual figure living in Paris and writing in French. He is the author of several novels, most recently L’Armée du Salut and Une Mélancolie arabe (Éditions du Seuil), the co-author with Frédéric Mitterand of the texts of a photography book entitled Maroc 1900-1960 (Actes Sud), and the editor and introducer of Lettres à un jeune Marocain (Éditions du Seuil). As the first openly gay writer intervening publicly in Morocco itself (actually the first in the entire Arab world) and whose novels are distributed in that country, he has been ranked by the influential Moroccan weekly magazine Tel Quel as one of the three “icons” of contemporary Moroccan culture and society. He is also a vigorous defender of tolerance, cultural and civic openness, democracy and human rights in his native country and everywhere. Novels by Abdellah Taia have already been translated in Spanish, Dutch and Italian, and Salvation Army just appeared in English, translated by Frank Stock and prefaced by Edmund White, at M.I.T. Press. Taia’s “calmly transgressive work” has been recognized as a “major addition to the new French literature emerging from the North African Arabic diaspora”, as it combines narrative and rhetorical complexity with the subjective genuine tonality of personal story telling and auto-fictional apparent confession.
This is a novel about love in all his forms. A Moroccan boy’s love for his mother (.)The boy’s love for his older brother (.) About the boy’s love of the French language and literature (.) This is (.) a book about the love of men for men(.) This a book about a boy’s love for his past. This is also a book about fear. (.) If the secret of great fiction (.) is “defamiliarization”, making everything known seem strange, then nothing could be more accomplished and persuasive than this mysterious novel. The boy himself is foreign to us, our world is foreign to him, everyone is a foreigner in love with the “other” (whether that be a Swiss man or an older brother). Despite the simplicity and clarity of Taia’s style, we sense how sophisticated he is – that this is a simplicity that only intelligence (.) can buy. Not only has the language been chastened, but the selection of scenes to show and to exclude has also been subjected to a draconian editing process. Finally, this is a book about poverty. About sexual tourism, its benign side (.) and its cruel side. But Abdellah Taïa doesn’t spell this out. His is an ecstatic and generous nature who lives in the particular, who shies away from generalizations. No matter how often he might be disappointed or wounded he is ever (.) prepared to receive that wonderful, transforming thing: reciprocal affection. This book is a clear stream; drink from it deeply. Edmund White
This event is organized in conjunction with the U.M. Department of Modern Languages and Literatures and the French Cultural Services (Miami office), with the support of the U.M. Queer Studies Research Group and the U.M. Africana Studies Program, along with the Alliance Française de Miami-Fort Lauderdale.. Open to the public. Free admission.

Eliseo Parra is one Spain’s leading performers and researchers of folk music. He has traveled to small villages to rediscover old songs, musical instruments and learned how to play some instruments in the traditional style. He reconstructs folk music by adding modern elements. His background may seem surprising to some. He began as a rock musician and afterwards became interested in jazz and Caribbean rhythms. Eventually, he ended up rediscovering Spanish folk music.
Rosalia, Guitar player, songwriter, composer and vocalist, a truly original musician. With a fabulous energy and singular mastery of her instrument, able to un-earth the ancient popular music of her native Spain and embody it in an astonishing performance full of passion and mastery. Rosalia’s music is an inspired encounter of beauty, guts and virtuosity. Though educated with some of the bests musicians in the world, Rosalía’s songs reveal a truly un-affected, creative and brave artist who has become a cult musician for an international audience. Her music is a fusion of traditional Spanish Folk music that has been largely forgotten. The adaptations combine this folk heritage, which is not derived from Flamenco, with jazz and Latin colors. She has taken many sources and created a new musical vision enriched by her virtuosity guitar technique.

At CCEMiami. Free Admission

CCEMiami will switch the way we look at science in Miami with the new conference series “Did you know?” that will feature science related activities in an environment that will forever change how we see that subject. Guided by a group of US resident Hispanic researchers we will learn that science is neither a difficult discipline nor a boring one and that is not reserve for just a few alienated beings. Quite the contrary, it can truly engross the audiences if transmitted with passion and closeness.
Science is the most intellectual adventure of the Century. Unfortunately the main characters are not prone to leave their labs and share with society their fascinating knowledge on cosmology, neuroscience, environment, biomedicine or technological revolution.
In “Did you know?” we will discuss climatic changes, new energies, human behavior, evolution, the state of our oceans, genetic revolution, the year of astronomy, science and cooking and many other subjects that will convince participants that science could be as beautiful and interesting as art, literature or film. The series is coordinated by Pere Estupinyà, Estupinyà is a Chemist and Biochemist from Spain who, after a short time as a PhD researcher, moved to science journalism. He has been the editor of REDES, the leading Spanish television program on science, and lectured in Science, Technology and Society at the Ramon Llull University. In 2007-2008 he spent one academic year at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University as a Knight Science Journalism Fellow. Since the sixties, cities have changed at a dramatic pace. This has been due in large part to real estate and financial interests, disconnected from collective needs. This deep restructuring has affected both demography and socio-economic configurations. The quality of life within each growing sector of the population has been compromised.

At the end of the Twentieth Century, while some neighborhoods deteriorated, others regenerated socially via occupation by the upper class and so generating a rapid rise in the economic value. Every year, more and more people are displaced from their homes because of abandonment of neighborhoods, land expropriation and re-zoning, rate rises and costs that outstrip salaries. The constant pressures of urban decay, land speculation, the establishment of ghettos, the influx of international migrants or the homeless from neighboring regions makes as essential review of our ideas of habitability.

A group of artists has rallied against these situations, fostering a counter culture where contemporary city decadence is approached from different angles. They challenge housing problems, the use of public space, land speculation, urban settlements on the fringe of legality, enforced desertion of neighborhoods and buildings, urban decay and the formation of ghettos. They demand a new approach to homelessness.

Individual and collective artists such as Raúl Cárdenas/Torolab, Santiago Cirugeda/Recetas Urbanas, Democracia, Gean Moreno, Ernesto Oroza, Juan Carlos Robles and Todo por la Praxis, illustrate the following cases in Madrid, Seville, Miami, Tijuana and Havana.

Activities at the Cultural Center of Spain are sponsored by the Spanish Agency of International Cooperation to the Development (AECID), Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners.

Schedule is subject to changes. All activities have limited seating. For more information, please visit www.ccemiami.org

Each year, the Center honors distinguished alumni through their annual Alumni Entrepreneur Awareness Campaign (also known as the Banner Campaign). From now through Friday, November 20, 2009, the Pino Global Entrepreneurship Center will seek new nominations for the 2010 Alumni Entrepreneur Awareness Campaign to identify emerging entrepreneurs among FIU’s growing alumni base. It is through this endeavor that the Center recognizes alumni who have created their own businesses in order to spread the word and the spirit of entrepreneurship across disciplines.

As a part of this campaign, a picture of each selected nominee along with their entrepreneurial story is added to a beautifully designed banner that is unveiled during the 2010 Alumni Entrepreneur Happy Hour Celebration this spring. Rosalia Roio and Eliseo Parra in Concert at Centro Cultural Espanol 10/8/09

Rosalia Roio and Eliseo Parra in Concert
Fri. Oct. 30 8PM at Centro Cultural Español

Cecilia Moreno-Yaghoubi Exhibition Event at the Consulate of Colombia in Coral Gables 10/2/09

Visual artist Cecilia Moreno-Yaghoubi’s forthcoming exhibition, “Girl from Cali”, opens on Friday, October 2, 2009 at the Consulate of Colombia in Coral Gables.
Cecilia’s “assemblages” address social issues and culturally-relevant topics, but the use of discarded dolls and random, found objects in her work adds an interesting spin that is both diminutive and disturbing. It’s particularly ironic that her controversial pieces will be showing at a staunch government institution like the Colombian Consulate and are yet very accessible to the public – you don’t have to know art to get this..
Opening night on October 2 coincides with the monthly Coral Gables artwalk. Comp bites by Café Mamajuana and cocktails courtesy of Nuvo; event is free and open to the public.

Argentina is a major center for Latin American art where artists thrive, particularly in the vibrant and active cultural milieu of Buenos Aires, but also in the provincial capitals. Known and appreciated around the world, Argentine artists of the twentieth century have consistently absorbed global artistic trends without losing their national identity.

Cremata Gallery is pleased to present Argentine Visions: from Modernism to Contemporary Aesthetics, an exhibition featuring an exciting collection of acrylics, oils, collages, inks, and watercolors, from the fifties to today. From Italo-Argentine Modernist masters Bruno Venier and Carlo Monzani, who has exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum in NYC, to contemporary artists living in Argentina, Cremata Gallery is showcasing 17 artists with very different styles. Like U. S. art, Argentine art has a strong flavor of the melting pot, that has lately been turning from European influences to its native resources. Many of the paintings and water colors in the show were inspired by the École de Paris, from staid academic works to surrealism. Others are more indigenous.

Join us for this awaited show and enjoy Malbec wines, Argentine hors d’oeuvres and a special Tango performance by Claudio y Yanira, who teach Tango at the Alliance Francaise of Miami every Monday evening.

Recently the trio has enjoyed concerts in Ireland, Germany, Chicago, Vermont, and Tennessee, and they are very excited to be returning to South Florida! Their music is a mix of tasteful interpretations of standards and their own original compositions. Jamie’s 2008 release “O Sorriso Dela” (“Her Smile,” in Portuguese) has received critical acclaim and is played on over 250 jazz radio stations across the country.

About: Educate Tomorrow, Corp. is an international, nonprofit, certified 501(c)(3) organization. All over the world, poverty denies children, as well as adults, the promises of a better tomorrow. Forgotten by society and social welfare programs, children born into poverty are trapped in a cruel and often violent cycle that frequently continues for generations. Lacking the inspiration, confidence, knowledge, and means to change, entire families are lost to the cycle of hopelessness.

Educate Tomorrow believes that the best way to end the cycle of poverty is through education. Our mission is to make education an attainable goal for the most disadvantaged in our world, so that all may be afforded the possibilities that can be achieved through learning. We strive to reach out to these individuals and provide them inspiration, guidance, and support and lead them on the path of life-long learning.

Educate Tomorrow’s primary mission in the US is to provide one-on-one educational mentors to foster care children who are turning 18 and “aging out” of the system. Since its founding in 2003, Educate Tomorrow has successfully implemented its mentoring programs, education programs and life skills camps across the nation. Additionally, it has reached internationally by continuing to support the work of its founders who established one of the first local language primary schools, adult literacy programs and boarding schools in the remote and impoverished village of Kabey Fo in Niger, West Africa.

From A Strange Town – One-Person Exhibition By Vicente Hernández at Cernuda Arte Opening 9/4/09

vicente

FROM A STRANGE TOWN
A ONE-PERSON EXHIBITION BY VICENTE HERNÁNDEZ at Cernuda Arte

OPENING RECEPTION WITH THE ARTIST: FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 7-10 P.M.

Cernuda Arte will host an exhibition of artwork by contemporary Cuban artist, Vicente Hernández entitled, From a Strange Town. The exhibit which inaugurated at the Servando Gallery in Havana will now show in Miami, Florida. The artist has been granted a visitor’s visa by the US government to attend the Opening Reception of his solo show at the gallery on Friday, September 4, from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m.

Vicente Hernández has had one-person exhibitions in Cuba, The Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Panama, Venezuela, Spain, and the United States. This will be the artist’s second personal exhibition in the USA. Hernández resides with his family in Batabanó, Cuba and is represented by Cernuda Arte world-wide.

The exhibition, From a Strange Town, comprises more than thirty works on canvas and is accompanied by a thirty-six page full color catalog. Hernández’ paintings, grand in scale and vibrant colors, reveal a convoluted universe in which surreal elements and artifacts of multifarious nature move and float freely about in navigable seas and skies. Inspired by his native surroundings in Batabanó (a fisherman’s town south of Havana), the artist approaches his main plastic discourse – the massive migrations of people – from a contemporary perspective. In a distinct style of his own, the painter renders riveting and thought-provoking images, reminiscent of noteworthy painters who have marked history.

As professor, art critic and curator, Alejandro Anreus comments,
“…Recently I encountered the work of a young painter living and working in Cuba which has simply amazed me. His name is Vicente Hernández. He is a native son of Batabanó and a painter with a capital P. His pictures, canvases that range in size from the modest to the monumental, are synthesis of good drawing, balanced composition and painterly colors. Floating neighborhoods and islands inhabit his paintings, as do boats and ships, towers and flying machines. Within each one of these universes we encounter other worlds, where people struggle, make love, dream and escape, while animals are curious witnesses to human folly. Although I might find some antecedent “family member” within Cuban painting in Hernández’ work… I choose to see him as a homegrown Brueghel from Batabanó. Like the Flemish master, Hernández is very much a moralist with a compassionate sense of humor. Brueghel was anchored in the humanism of Erasmus. I have been told Hernández is a devout Baptist, therefore he is probably anchored in this most libertarian of Christian faiths.”

cocktails at the grand opening of Don Chile Restaurant in Coral Gables 7/22/09

donchile
DON CHILE OPENS AND ADDS SOME “SPICE” TO THE “CITY BEAUTIFUL”

Coral Gables which is no stranger to housing great eateries is about to add a dash of spice to those who like it a little hot. Don Chile restaurant is ready to take its spot as the best authentic Mexican restaurant in South Florida as owner/chef Erubiel Gutierrez displays his heritage and culinary artistry with a grand opening celebration that will feature music, food, and margaritas! Located on Ponce De Leon Don Chile should be a favorite of the Miracle Mile business sector and residents of Coral Gables.

Don Chile with the help of Creativas Group Public Relations have planned a grand opening event that will feature live mariachi performances, cocktails, food, celebrities, VIP’s, and city officials. A ceremonial ribbon cutting will be spear headed by Coral Gables city officials and the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce. Celebrities Adriana Cataño, Latin Grammy winner Jorge Moreno, and renowned artist Carlos A Navarro will be on hand for the celebration. Guests can expect to sip on delicious margarita cocktails compliments of Don Chile. Pisco O, which is a high end Peruvian brandy, will also be a featured spirit at the festivities. The Grand Opening of Don Chile will feature bite sized versions of Chef Erubiel Gutierrez’s dishes.

Born in Campeche, Mexico Erubiel Gutierrez is no stranger authentic Mexican Cuisine. Gutierrez who graduated from the Iniciacion University with a degree in graphic design could not keep himself out of the kitchen and thus spent 16 years honing his culinary skills working out of various restaurants. Gutierrez grew tired of the extremely casual or basterdized franchise Mexican restaurants that promoted themselves as authentic. He envisioned a restaurant that would feature true Mexican dishes. To Gutierrez the food from his birth land is an art.

Mexican food is considered by many to be one of the first great fusion cuisines created when 4th century Spaniards imported rice, pork, beef, wine, and other ingredients and fused them with the foods of the indigenous Aztec and Mayan Indians. Gutierrez is a master at creating food with varied flavors, colorful decoration, and combinations of spices and ingredients that true Mexican food is known for. His love of heritage and food finally gave way to his dream of opening his own restaurant which features “Las recetas de Mama” or mothers own recipes.

Don Chile is a family restaurant which features traditional dishes. What amazes most is how balanced the food is. No one ingredient overpowers another which is the opposite with most Americanized Mexican restaurants. The menu is filled with favorites like fajitas, flautas, and carne asada as well as not so well-known traditional Mexican dishes like Torta Chilanga, Pato Castellano which is a dish featuring duck, and the very interesting pickled oyster dish which is an excellent combination of pickled seafood and vegetables.

One can expect to enjoy their meal with a margarita or two while taking in the décor which was designed professionally. The design of this charmingly casual restaurant strikes a perfect blend between traditional and modern décor. Don’t expect overly ethnic décor such as clay pottery or cactus plants. Warm colored fabrics drape from overhead while stunningly oversized pre-Columbian styled masks adorn the walls.

Gutierrez’s vision which is to extend his rich heritage to the masses, is about to come to fruition. On July 9th, the gallery will present the complete collection of twenty-nine lithographs from the Suite entitled Imaginary Portraits by Pablo Picasso. This exhibition will be on display for cultural and educational purposes only. After a two week presentation at The Americas Collection, the show will embark on a two year traveling exhibition around Central and South America
The Americas Collection has the pleasure of inviting you to an extraordinary cultural event on Thursday, July 9, from 7:00 to 10:00 pm. The gallery will showcase works of Pablo Picasso courtesy of the Ortiz-Gurdian Family Collection. Mr. & Mrs. Ramiro Ortiz are the founders and owners of The Americas Collection and The Ortiz-Gurdian Foundation, a not for profit organization in Nicaragua. As a tribute to their friends, clients, and the cities of Coral Gables and Miami, Mr. and Mrs. Ortiz are honored to share with the public their love for the arts and their support for the cultural enrichment of the local community.
The Ortiz-Gurdian Foundation was created in 1996 with the purpose of diffusing and promoting the visual arts in Central America. This organization has sponsored the various biennials that have taken place in this region for the past 12 years. In 2002, parallel to their art program, the Ortiz-Gurdian Family expanded their commitment to their community by creating the Breast Cancer Program for low income women of Nicaragua. This health program currently saves the lives of approximately 600 women each year.
The Americas Collection is another institution close to Mr. and Mrs. Ortiz’s hearts. Moved by the same love that made The Ortiz-Gurdian Foundation possible, The Americas Collection has dedicated 18 years to the enhancement of Latin American art.
On July 9th, the gallery will present the complete collection of twenty-nine lithographs from the Suite entitled Imaginary Portraits by Pablo Picasso. This exhibition will be on display for cultural and educational purposes only. After a two week presentation at The Americas Collection, the show will embark on a two year traveling exhibition around Central and South America.
This special evening will be accompanied by lectures from two of the most respected persons in the Miami art community, the Director and Chief Curator of the Frost Art Museum, Dr. Carol Damian, and the art critic for El Nuevo Herald, Mr. Carlos Luis. The lectures are scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.
This exhibition will be the last presentation at the gallery’s 2440 Ponce de Leon location. Beginning August 1st, The Americas Collection will continue its exhibitions at 214 Andalusia Avenue in Coral Gables – across the street from its former location.
We hope you can join us for a glass of champagne to celebrate this extraordinary evening with friends. The exhibition will be open from July 9 through July 25, 2009.

The impact of Antipersonnel Mines with Gervasio Sánchez and Gustavo Laurie from the United Nationes Mine Action Service (UNMAS).

Ten 10 years after the creation of the Ottawa Treaty against antipersonnel mines only 151 countries have signed the document. Today 167 millions of those gadgets are still buried in 78 countries all over the World. The work by the Spanish photo journalist Gervasio Sánchez, awarded with the Rey de España International Press Price in 2008, shows us how countries involved in war change forever.
Antipersonnel mines are still a problem for the international community. Dozens of countries suffer the consequences while many governments systematically break their promises or even violate the Treaty they have already signed. This show offers an overview of the present reality of the victims that were part of Sanchez’s first works on the issue. The aim is to raise public awareness about the impact of those weapons.
The show has been on tour in 2008 (60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights) and has visited among others the UNESCO headquarters in Paris and the United Nations in New York. Vidas Minadas 10 años después / Mined Lives 10 years later will be on view until July 31th.

Cernuda Arte Exhibit Fuego En El Batey by Mario Carreno 7/3/09

CERNUDA ARTE WILL EXHIBIT ON FRIDAY, JULY 3, AT 7:00 P.M. THE ICONIC PAINTING FUEGO EN EL BATEY
BY CUBAN MASTER MARIO CARREÑO, ACQUIRED FOR 2.18 MILLION DOLLARS AT CHRISTIE’S MAY AUCTION IN NEW YORK
MARIO CARREÑO, Fuego en el Batey, 1943,Duco and oil on wood panel,
48 x 65 inches

Cernuda Arte proudly announces the acquisition – in equal partnership with the Rudman Family from the Dominican Republic – of the painting, Fuego en el Batey (Fire in the Sugar-Mill Village) a rediscovered gem of Cuban modernism. The painting, the highest valued work at Christie’s Latin American May sale, sold above its high estimate for 2.18 million dollars. Fuego en el Batey will be exhibited at Cernuda Arte on Friday, July 3rd at 7:00 p.m.
Fuego en el Batey was painted in Cuba, in 1943 and is considered one of three seminal masterworks of a series of paintings on wood panel in Duco and oil rendered by the Cuban master. The painting – known to biographers, art historians and collectors – was regarded as a lost treasure until recently found in the private collection of the late Milton and Nora Ward of New York, where it had been hanging on a wall of their home for more than 50 years. Fuego en el Batey, and two other major Duco works that conform the artist’s celebrated triad – Danza Afrocubana and El Corte de Caña – were exhibited together in Havana, in 1943. One of the exhibitions took place in Galería del Prado (a gallery owned by María Luisa Gómez Mena, the prominent Cuban Maecenas who later married Carreño.) The second one was a one-person-exhibition at Galería Lyceum. It is also believed that in 1944, when Mario Carreño resided for some time in New York, Fuego en el Batey and other works of this period were shown at Perls Galleries.

Fuego en el Batey portrays a scene of a family escaping a fire in the batey (a small village of precariously built houses and stables, in the surroundings of a sugar mill, where the sugar cane cutters and their families lived). The mother rapidly hands the child to a guajiro peasant riding a gallant-spirited horse. In the eyes of the viewer, the guajiro and horse become the heroic figures of this scenario. The moving image of this magnificent painting attests to Carreño’s desire of conveying, in some of his major works of this period, a Cuban national ethos. Regarding the high quality of this masterpiece, art historian Alejandro Anreus says, “The overall meatiness of the figures recalls Picasso’s neo-classic phase, the evocation of movement… brings to mind the Italian Futurists, yet the end product is pure Carreño, a skilled and powerful picture that is both classical and baroque in its pictorial language.”

In celebration of this memorable event, Cernuda Arte will be exhibiting – for the first time in Miami – this resurfaced treasure of Cuban art. We are very fortunate and honored to be able to share the enjoyment of this painting with the South Florida community. The exhibition, Fuego en el Batey, will also feature a group of museum quality works by Mario Carreño’s contemporaries such as, Wifredo Lam, Víctor Manuel, Eduardo Abela, Amelia Peláez, Carlos Enríquez, Fidelio Ponce, Luis Martínez Pedro, René Portocarrero, Cundo Bermúdez and Mariano Rodríguez, among others.

A series of lectures, given by Alejandro Anreus, PhD Professor of Art History and Latin American Studies at William Paterson University, New Jersey; Juan Martínez, PhD Professor of Art History at Florida International University and Architect-Urbanist Nicolás Quintana, Professor Emeritus of Florida International University, will be organized during the time-period of this exhibit.
Our gallery is located at 3155 Ponce de Leon Blvd, Coral Gables, Florida. For further information, please contact us at 305-461-1050 or at cernudaarte@msn.com

Free Concert & Charity Fundraiser in Coral Gables Features Live Music Jamming & Great Raffle Prizes 6/5/09

This Friday Night, June 5th Free Concert & Charity Fundraiser in Coral Gables Will Feature Live Music Jamming & Great Raffle Prizes

As the economy continues to force most to tighten their belts and closely monitor their cash flow many organizations are feeling the strain. Best Buddies, a well known 501©(3) non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with intellectual disabilities is no exception. This year they find themselves straining to send participants to their 2009 Annual Leadership Conference. When news of this reached local rock band and winners of nine Status QuO South Florida Live Music Awards, The Coffee House Gypsies, they joined forces with the elegant Hotel Saint Michel in Coral Gables and all of their friends to help the cause…

On the evening of Friday June 5th, just a short walk from Miracle Mile’s art exhibits, The Hotel Saint Michel will host one of the CHG’s popular acoustic/unplugged jam sessions. The jam show will last from 8:00 PM till about 10:30. Admission is free and all ages are welcome to attend. Invited jam guests include members of the band “Pretty On Paper” and local folk legend Valerie Wisecracker.

But wait! That’s not all…

Local record label Tenement Hall Productions of Miami will donate CDs of the band’s thirteen track 2008 release “The Artist” to sell during the show. All profits will go towards benefiting Best Buddies Leadership Conference 2009.

The album was described in a Muse’s Muse Music Review of The Coffee House Gypsies as being “as magical as their name implies.” Miami New Times’ Local Motion said that “Fans of Fleetwood Mac, the Mamas and the Papas, and 97.3 FM should dig this group without question. Their harmonies, both vocal and instrumental, are soothing and give a generally upbeat feel to the 13-track album” and last September RAG Magazine quoted sound engineer Cosmo Ohms saying The Coffee House Gypsies are “nu-folk rock for today’s generation.”

But wait, there is still more!

The band plans to hold a raffle to benefit the cause: all profit made from the sale of raffle tickets will go towards helping send attendees from Best Buddies to the Leadership Conference. One lucky winner will win tickets for two to an Orlando Florida theme park and another will win a two night stay for two at the luxurious Hotel Saint Michel!! Winners will be announced at 10:00 at the event and tickets are expected to sell for a mere $15 or $20.

Not bad huh?

The event was organized by the band’s lead singer/songwriter, Albert Damian Mata, in collaboration with Hotel Saint Michel and Tenement Hall Productions, LLC. When told what the band was doing to help Best Buddies with their Leadership Conference the activities coordinator for the non-profit, Liz Smith (who coincidentally happens to also be a loyal fan and a regular at CHG concerts and jam parties) said “It is just all sorts of cool!”

Mark, the general manager for The Hotel Saint Michel, explained that he had been trying to set up an event with The Coffee House Gypsies for some time, so when the opportunity to do this with them presented itself he was more than happy to jump in. “My son was actually very involved with Best Buddies when he was in high school a few years back, so I personally know all the good that they do. We at Saint Michel are just very happy to help.” The hotel has volunteered to serve free cheese platters while donating one dollar to the cause for every alcoholic drink sold during the show.

Acoustic/unplugged jam sessions and performances are nothing new to the now pop-rock band. They started out performing acoustic shows in local coffeehouses such as Joffreys and Luna Star. “We used to hang out at a local Starbucks writing music… the regulars got to know us and nicknamed us ‘those coffeehouse gypsies’ and the name stuck.” That is what they told The Miami Herald’s Rayme Samuels last November when they were given the title of The Herald’s ‘Band of The Hour’. Since then they have blossomed into a full rock band, playing bigger venues and shows alongside acts such as The Spam Allstars, Locos Por Juana, Jahfe’, and City of God, and even headlining at shows such as The Tobacco Road 96 Anniversary Celebration.

“We still do private parties and acoustic jam sessions a lot though,” the band’s Alex Norris says, “Its fun for us and our fans love it.”

Online one local fan blogs about how “they host private house jams for their fans and they throw huge parties where everyone gets to hang out and sing along with them” while another fan (Hector) posts, “The full blown electric shows are great. But I will always perfer the acoustic jam sessions. That’s when you really get the feel of what this band is all about. The intimate, candle lit rooms full of friends, family, fans and other local artists is really an experience that shouldn’t be missed.”

Most recently Mata made a surprise cameo appearance in Tampa and “jammed” with singer/songwriter Bradley Ashby at Beak’s Old Florida on May 29, 2009. The two harmonized on songs by Incubus, Melissa Etheridge, Fleetwood Mac, and Tom Petty. They even did some original songs such as Bradley’s “Its Raining Now.” Bradley kept telling audience members, “Believe it or not none of this is practiced or rehearsed” to which Mata replied “This is what jamming is all about, baby.” The crowd cheered the duet’s performance. “I still can’t believe that Albert Damian from The Coffee House Gypsies is here” said Bradley into the mic.

And so on June 5th the Gypsies will once again “jam” for an audience. No fancy effects, no electric distortion, no reverbs or delays, just good old passion for music.

“Our goal is to try to raise $1,000 in one night.” says Mata. “If we can generate enough money to send just one more kid to that conference it will be a really great accomplishment, I will personally be very, very happy with that.”

And The Gypsies are no strangers to supporting local causes neither. Since 1997 they have been active in the community with causes such as HIV & AIDS Research, Cancer Research, Local Emerging Arts and Local Independent Music, Support for US Troops, Equal Rights & Human Rights/Amnesty International, Batten Disease, Eco-Awareness & Conservation, Support for Local Animal & Pet Lovers, and more.

“As far as we can tell we only have this one life here,” says Mata, “So why not use it to try to make as many good things happen as possible?”

The acoustic/unplugged jam concert event for Best Buddies will take place on Friday, June 5th at 8:00 PM at The Hotel Saint Michel located at 162 Alcazar Avenue in Coral Gables. Donations can also be made online to the Best Buddies Kintera Fundraiser Page.

“The Tulse Luper Suitcases” is a trilogy of 120-minute feature films covering 16 episodes in the life of Tulse Luper, a “professional” prisoner. Featuring sixteen prisons, the trilogy reconstructs the story of his life from the evidence of 92 suitcases found around the world between 1928 and 1989.
Imprisoned for as many reasons as are conceivable, including the real and imagined crimes of lust, espionage, greed, love, wrongful impersonation, embezzlement, murder, political ambition and ambition itself, Tulse Luper makes being prisoner into an art. The story covers sixty years of history, from the anniversary of the discovery of Uranium (1928) to the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

Deon Davis, Author
I’ll Find A Way (A Mother’s Journey of Love and Acceptance for her Gay Son

Recently published book I’ll Find A Way hit the online bookstores and Authorhouse.com February 19, 2009, the book is written by first time author Deon Davis who expressingly shares her journey of raising her gay son throughout her book.

Davis felt the need to put their experience in book form to help not only parents but the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender young adults and teenagers. The emotional and physical toll that this deep dark secret took on her son almost destroyed his life but through family, love, self-acceptance and therapy he found a way and now enjoys the best that life has to offer.

Each year we lose our children to suicide, substance abuse or the cruel and lonely streets because of the ignorance so many of us share for the GLBT Community. In writing this book, Author Deon M. Davis dedicates herself to fight for one less suicide, glbt living on the streets, and last but not least, defamation against this beautiful community of human beings.
A proceed from each book sold will be donated to organizations that provide safe havens, counseling and other necessities.

Something new has been added at the Biltmore’s Boules Bar! Every Tuesday the Biltmore will be hosting Petanque tournaments, a game enjoyed by several million people in France. It’s a form of boules where the goal is to throw metal balls as close as possible to a small wooden ball called a cochonnet (jack). Perhaps best done with a sparkling glass of champagne in one hand. The competition is lighthearted – for beginners and experts alike – with the emphasis on fun and socializing. Specialty cocktails will be available at half price. The Boules Bar (also called the Cascade) is located next to the pool. Call or email to register for the tournament. rcastillo@biltmorehotel.com

To speak or not to speak on Carlos García de la Nuez 3/25/09

To speak or not to speak on Carlos García de la Nuez
Presentation: March 25, 20:00 hours
Location: Books and Books 265 Aragón Ave.
Coral Gables, FL. 33134
The art book CARLOS GARCIA will be presented on March 25, at 8:00 pm, at Books and Books, 265 Aragón Ave. Coral Gables, FL. 33134, tel. 305 442 44 08, fax. 305 44 97 51. orders@boooksandbooks.com This launching will be held within the framework of Arteamericas 09, one of the most important art fairs taking place in the United States, where Carlos García will show his art works. The book’s edition which took one year to complete, is the product of the author’s comprehensive work, with more than 160 photographs of his paintings and critical essays by renowned writers, in 295 pages. The editor of this publication is Galería Talento Arte Visual, located in Mexico City.

It would seem that the spirit of the man who dreams is completely satisfied. That refractibilitat, that pulling and encrypted energy composing the crash between objects, signs and moods in an encounter of fortuity, embraces the aesthetic experience of Carlos García, whose work, besides poetic is an act of giving in, always aimed towards the edge of painting.

From its depth, this book speaks of the heritage of abstractionism placed within figurative traces, re-symbolized landscapes and territories conquered by pigment stains, calligraphies, punctuation and writings, like chromatic metaphors of a new nature.

Carlos García lifts off with his work within the so called 80´s Generation, marked by the rupture with the traditional school of Cuban painting. His group, Cuatro por Cuatro, is considered one of the most important in the context of visual arts in Havana during that decade. He has participated with his work in the 19th edition of the São Paulo Biennial in Brazil. He has worked with the Donberger Gallery in Germany; Galerie Nesle and Galerie Artuel in France; Galería Talento Visual, from Mexico. He has exhibited his paintings in Russia, France, Italy, Germany, Yugoslavia, Costa Rica, Brazil, Colombia, Panama, Argentina; all this, to highlight only a few of the most important moments in the universe of this renowned painter.

His work is part of the Permanent Collection of Museo de Bellas Artes in Havana, Cuba.

Reception for Autocycles by Matt Carone 3/6/09

Autocycles by Matt Carone
ArtSpace Virginia Miller Galleries
cordially invites you to our opening reception
Reception:
Friday, March 6th
7 – 10 pm
Location:
ArtSpace Virginia Miller Galleries
169 Madeira Avenue
Coral Gables, FL 33134

“Autocycles,” The latest twists in the lifelong evolution of paintings by Matt Carone will open at ArtSpace/Virginia Miller Galleries at 7 p.m. Friday, Mar. 6th.

Largely inspired by his 45-year friendship with the famed Chilean painter Roberto Matta, Carone’s paintings recently took a turn toward a more patterned abstraction.

According to the artist, the new subtly toned works “seem to be an opening of a new door of automatism.
“The approach is similar to the past works but the image is arrived at more spontaneously and graphically,” Carone says. “Subconscious symbols and rhythmic gestures relating to each other or canceling each other out seem to be the building blocks to the final statement

“The seed,” he acknowledges, “was planted by Matta.”

Like the abstract expressionists, Carone seeks “a spontaneous image as a consequence of a gesture…dictated more by the subconscious than by a rational, disciplined procedure.”

Carone became interested in art as an adolescent during the summer of 1944, when he was asked to model for Hans Hoffman. His older brother, the well-known painter Nicolas Carone, was studying with Hoffman.

Through his brother and years of involvement in art, Carone has had a close association with many of the era’s most famous artists and critics, including Conrad Marca-Relli, James Brooks, Paul Jenkins, Sandro Chia, Larry Rivers, Balcolm Greene, James Rosenquist, Duane Hanson, Thomas Hoving, Clement Greenberg and many others.

His extensive professional biography lists one-person exhibitions in such museums as the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art, the Boca Raton Museum, Don and Dottie Jacobs Gallery at Georgetown College, Kentucky, and the Palazzo Panni Museum in Arco di Trento, Italy, along with numerous leading private galleries.

Paintings by Carone are included in the permanent collections of Bard College at Simon’s Rock, in Great Barrington, Massachusetts; Bass Museum, Miami Beach, Florida; Boca Raton Museum of Art, Boca Raton, Florida; Fort Lauderdale City Hall, Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Hoover Collection, Albion College, Albion, Michigan; Illinois State Museum, Springfield, Illinois; Iona College, New Rochelle, New York; Lowe Art Museum, Coral Gables, Florida; Federica Matta; Ramuntcho Matta; Roberto Matta; Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale, Florida; North American Rockwell Corporation;

Firebird, Acrylic on Paper, 13 x 9 3/4 inches, 2008

Palazzo Panni Museum, Arco di Trento, Italy; Peabody Museum, Nashville, Tennessee; Rahr-West Art Museum, Manitowoc, Wisconsin; Simon’s Rock College of Bard, Great Barrington, Massachusetts; Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York; and the Virginia Center for The Creative Arts, Mt. San Angelo, Virginia.

Official Grand Opening of Mamajuana Cafe in Coral Gables 2/19/09

mamajuana
MAMAJUANA CAFÉ CELEBRATES A GRAND OPENING IN TRUE “MIAMI STYLE”
Coral Gables, Florida which is no stranger to
fine dining establishments is about to get a culinary boost from an
indigenous Dominican miracle potion named “Mamajuana”. The owners of the
famous Mamajuana Café in New York are ready to open their doors locally and
treat Miami residents to the feel, sights, tastes, and sounds that have had
the Big Apple buzzing for years.

A formal ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 6:30 pm with Coral
Gables city officials, celebrities and the owners of Mamajuana (Victor
Osorio, Carlos Saint-hilaire). Following that “welcome” into the South
Florida community, the kick off celebration will commence. Passed hors de
oeuvres, Mojitos courtesy of Bacardi, Champagne courtesy of Korbel and fresh
rolled cigars courtesy of South Beach Cigar Shop will keep guests of this
high end soiree smiling as they are the first to step foot into Mamajuana in
Miami.

Mamajuana represents a place where all five of the senses will delight.
Nestled across the street from “The Village of Merrick Park” Mamajuana Café
will embark guests on a journey to a far off “paradise”. A full-on
entertainment and dining experience, Mamajuana Cafe was created for the
patron possessing an appreciation for culture, art, and cuisine. The venue
is an attraction in itself as it stays true to pre and post Columbian
Dominican culture.

The owners of Mamajuana Café considered every detail as they carefully
blended pre-Columbian artifacts and feel with old world Spanish
architecture. The name “Mamajuana” itself is derived from a drink created by
the Taino Indians who are indigenous to the Dominican Republic. The
Mamajuana drink is a concoction made of herbs, roots, rum, and wine which
has been used as a cure all that treats everything from impotency to the
flu.

Much like the Mamajuana drink the Café will act as a cure all for patrons as
the venue transports them from the mundane to an exotic Dominican paradise.
One can indulge in amazing cocktails, an award-winning wine list (under the
direction of Sommelier Yamil Martinez) and live entertainment. But the real
star of the show is the cuisine. Acclaimed Chef Ricardo Cardona, a pioneer
of Nuevo Latin Cuisine who created the Mamajuana menu in New York will
oversee the kitchen creating the menu in Miami as well. Cardona, who has
been featured in numerous publications including The New York Times, The
L.A. Times, and The Chicago Tribune, has worked in a variety of French and
American restaurants before accepting his current task at this venue
situated in one of the most prominent areas of South Florida.

On Thursday February 19th 2009 the grand opening will be like an awards
ceremony complete with a red carpet filled with local, regional and
national/international celebrities and dignitaries including: Aide to Miami
Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez, Roddy Gomez, Coral Gables Chamber of
Commerce and the Dominican American National Chamber of Commerce, Florida.

Onlookers will get to feast their eyes on all that equals a “wow” factor
such as the most fabulous exotic vehicles out in the market parked out front
courtesy of Elite Luxury Services, body painted models and performers
courtesy of Zhantra Entertainment and Drawing on People, music, surprise
performances and much, much, more. Once inside the venue, guests will

have the opportunity to sit amidst the beautiful ambiance the ownership had
created, including original artwork by artist Alex Yanes.

Guests, VIPS including: Tito Puente Jr., Fernando Del Rincon, Tony Andrade,
Nuestra Belleza Latina Alejandra Espinoza, Shalim, Jorge Moreno, Carlos
Navarro, Charytin Goyco, Karol Rosa, Liset Alea, and media will be present
as this opening takes everyone on a journey, a fabulous one embracing a
concept straight from NYC to the city of beaches and amazing nightlife-
Miami.

The Mamajuana grand Opening will take place with a ribbon cutting at 6:30pm,
cocktail reception with music from 7-10pm.

Promotional partners include: Presidente Beer, Perry Ellis
International/Cubavera,

Got It Concierge, Gables Magazine, One Source Branding, and the UM
Transplant Foundation.

opening festivities, please contact: Creativas Group (305) 968-2384 and via
