Egyptian Gallery Opening at Bass Museum of Art 4/29/10

A Night at the Museum
Thursday, April 29th – 8:30-10:30PM
Bass Museum of Art – 2121 Park Avenue, Miami Beach

Visitors to the Bass Museum of Art will soon be able to experience the ancient world. On Thursday, April 29, the museum will inaugurate the only Egyptian Gallery and mummy in Florida at their members-only premiere event, A Night at the Museum. The evening features informal curator-led tours by Bass Museum’s Executive Director Silvia Cubiña and Brooklyn Museum’s Egyptologist and special exhibition curator, Dr. Edward Bleiberg. Membership costs $125 and admits two to this private opening event.

Guests will enjoy cocktails by GREY GOOSE vodka and Bervini Prosecco with special desserts from Stella’s Sweet Shoppe. There will be raffle prizes, including an Ikepod: Marc Newson Solaris and Art Basel Miami Beach VIP Package.

The gallery offers an opportunity to learn about one of the world’s oldest and most mysterious civilizations from its surviving objects, and will showcase sarcophagi, mummy and 13 objects of Egyptian antiquity on long-term loan from the Brooklyn Museum, Lowe Art Museum and individuals’ private collections.

The nearest Egyptian gallery is located 667 miles from Miami Beach at Michael C. Carlos Museum in Atlanta. Bass Museum’s Egyptian Gallery opens to the public April 30.

THE ONLY EGYPTIAN GALLERY IN FLORIDA TO OPEN IN APRIL
Featuring an Egyptian sarcophagus and mummy

Visitors to the Bass Museum of Art will soon be able to experience the ancient world. On April 29, the museum will inaugurate the only Egyptian Gallery in Florida. The gallery offers a unique opportunity to learn about one of the world’s oldest and most mysterious civilizations from its surviving objects, including an Egyptian sarcophagus and mummy.

This project was conceived when the Bass Museum’s Executive Director and Chief Curator, Silvia Karman Cubiñá, identified a Polychrome Wood Inner Sarcophagus and Mummy from 25th or 26th Dynasty (808 – 518 B.C.) in the museum’s collection. “With the opening of the Egyptian Gallery, the Bass Museum will appeal to a wide audience of art, culture, archeology and history lovers; children and adults alike. It will serve as the place in Miami to experience a long history of object-making and what these objects say about humankind from 700 B.C. through the present,” said Karman Cubiñá.

During the opening celebration in April and throughout the first year the gallery is open, the museum will mount an ambitious series of public programs to advance understanding of the customs and objects of Ancient Egypt. Special educational outreach efforts include IDEA@thebass Family Days and lectures by visiting curators.

The museum recruited Dr. Edward Bleiberg, Curator of Egyptian, Classical and Ancient Middle Eastern Art at the Brooklyn Museum, as Consulting Curator of the project to research and interpret the vast hieroglyphic paintings on the surface of the Sarcophagus. Dr. Bleiberg began his study in July 2009 by translating the hieroglyphic drawings on the inner sarcophagus to obtain more information about the mummy. Like most of the surviving Egyptian mummies, the Bass mummy is destined to remain shrouded in mystery. But it is this very type of ancient mystery that continues to intrigue Egyptian art enthusiasts throughout the world.

The Egyptian Gallery will be permanently housed in a 460 sq. ft. first floor gallery centrally located and close to the museum’s entrance. The gallery will showcase the sarcophagi, mummy and thirteen objects of Egyptian antiquity on long-term loan from the Brooklyn Museum, Lowe Art Museum and Private Collections. These objects are roughly from the same period as the Bass sarcophagi and provide a representative sampling of what would typically have been placed inside the tomb to assist the dead in transitioning to the afterlife.

MORE INFORMATION:
Membership required for Night at the Museum opening preview event on April 29th, gallery opens to the public April 30th.

Miami Beach neighbor, Mr. Dan P.S. Paul, who sadly passed away this past February, left a generous gift to the Bass Museum of an Egyptian coffin and mummy and two Apulian vases. A renowned lawyer and specialist in First Amendment issues, Mr. Paul was a major crafter of the Dade County Charter in 1957 and was civically involved in many community issues. Mr. Paul will be memorialized in the new Egyptian Gallery and in future installation of the permanent collection. His legacy and spirit of generosity will continue to spread as school children and the general public enjoys these valuable objects.

Fun fact for anyone hoping to visit an Egyptian gallery: The next closest Egyptian gallery/sarcophagus is located at Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. This is 667 miles from Bass Museum of Art (Driving time: 10 hours 31 minutes).

Tigertail presents dance from Barcelona 4/9-10/10

Gripping, physically intense and genuinely lyrical, this award-winning extended evening-length duet Ölelés for two men marks the first collaboration between acclaimed Catalán choreographers and performers Jordi Cortés and Damián Muñoz – two of Spain’s most innovative young dance artists. Based on writer Sándor Márai’s 1942 masterpiece Embers, this high-velocity, nearly violent piece dramatizes the bitter reunion of two long-estranged friends, who look back to the fateful betrayal that shattered their bond 40 years earlier. Ölelés has received the Ciudad de Barcelona Award and the Premio de la Feria Internacional de Huesca.

Cortés has performed with DV8 Physical Theatre in London, among others and Muñoz, who formed his own company in 1995 and is dubbed the Almodóvar of dance in Spain. This simmering physical theatre work is guaranteed to draw the audience through an intense and furious male bonding.

The Rhythm Foundation kicks off its 8th annual Heineken TransAtlantic Festival this April with a two part series headlined by Colombia’s psychedelic cumbia band Bomba Estéreo and Mali’s world music sensation Vieux Farka Touré. In addition, Grammy-nominated Orquestra Contemporanea de Olinda of Brazil and Miami’s own two-time Grammy-nominated Locos Por Juana will join the festivities which have garnered much local and international attention for their eclectic music pairings.

The 8th annual Heineken TransAtlantic Festival is the sound of the world “right now” – the series of concerts and parties featuring modern world music proudly features innovative artists working in the beautiful collision between traditional rhythms and electronica/DJ culture. The series pays tribute to Miami as a true modern “TransAtlantic” capital, a crossroads of the Americas and Europe. It’s the hotbed of a young, club-crazy art scene, playground of the East, perched provocatively on the Atlantic Rim, where centuries of commerce and migration have formed a crossroads that unites Africa, Western Europe, the Caribbean, and the Americas.

The Rhythm Foundation, leading presenter of world music in South Florida, created the series in 2003 knowing that in Miami, there is a large audience of internationally-minded people who want to hear what is happening right now in our world. With this festival, The Rhythm Foundation showcases the city’s position as the hip center of a whole new generation of global music.

About Bomba Estéreo
Bomba Estéreo formed in the rich underground electronic scene of Bogota, Colombia in 2005. Guitarist Simon Mejia recruited fierce singer Liliana Saumet to join the group, and Bomba Estéreo expanded its “psychedelic cumbia” sound and captivating live show. The group plays an explosive dance-fusion of electronic dub and hip-hop, in a similar vein as M.I.A. and Santigold, mixed with classic Colombian rhythms like cumbia and champeta. The group made their US debut at SXSW in 2009 and garnered huge attention at LAMC in New York last summer. Myspace.com/BombaEstereo

About Vieux Farka Touré
The son of the revered Malian guitarist Ali Farka Touré, Vieux has stepped out from his late father’s massive shadow. Ali Farka Touré proved, in case anyone ever doubted it, that the soul of the blues could be found in West Africa. Vieux is turning heads with a more radical idea: that those western Saharan roots can be heard in everything from the jam band scene to Jamaican dub. The young Six Degrees Record artist and his band have caused a sensation at music festivals across the globe in recent years. He makes his Florida debut with this concert. VieuxFarkaToure.com

About Orquestra Contemporânea de Olinda
OCO brings together some of the best young musicians of Pernambuco, birthplace of classic Northeast Brazilian rhythms forro and frevo. The late legendary musical genius Chico Science left behind a supercharged music scene that fuses the rhythms of Pernambuco with drum & bass, rock and world grooves. In this music-crazed city filled with amazing horn players and percussionists comes Orquestra Contemporanea de Olinda, who has built a concise identity and huge following since their 2008 debut. Distributred by Som Livre, Brazil’s largest label, their CD was nominated for a 2009 Latin Grammy and was hailed by the New York Times. Now they embark on their US debut tour, including New York City’s Lincoln Center and Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Myspace.com/OrquestraContemporaneaDeOlinda

About Locos Por Juana
The two-time Grammy-nominated Miami-based band received this write up in the LA Times: “Blending relaxed reggae grooves with biting social commentary, hip-hop raps with brassy solos, Locos Por Juana pulls listeners into a reverse Gulf Stream churning through the Straits of Florida south to Jamaica, Venezuela and Colombia, and over to Puerto Rico, Locos Por Juana shows with every song that it has thoroughly assimilated its multiple musical fathers, with a Caribbean lilt and a rock-steady beat.”

Tiempo Libre perform in Miami Beach at Byron Carlyle Theatre 4/3/10

New “Miami On Stage” Series Continues With Tiempo Libre Performing “Bach in Havana” on Saturday April 3rd at the Byron Carlyle Theater

The new Miami On Stage project, which features local performing artists on a regular basis in Miami Beach’s North Beach neighborhood, continues on Saturday, April 3 with the great timba band Tiempo Libre at the Byron Carlyle Theater. The evening features the Miami theatrical premiere performance of their Bach in Havana, a salsa meets Classical music mash-up based on the Grammy-nominated CD of the same name. The Miami On Stage series is produced by FUNDarte, one of South Florida’s most adventurous and successful presenters of alternative culture, especially with a Latin flavor.

The Cuban-born, Miami-based musicians of Tiempo Libre have catapulted onto the national stage with their clever, beautiful and danceable sound. With Bach in Havana, they took their love of the contrapointal Baroque music of J.S. Bach (having all been classically trained) and found a way to meld with the tropical, Afro-Cuban rhythms and instrumentation they usually perform. The resulting work – tuneful, playful and musically adventurous – has garnered praise and awards after being released by Sony Music. Ever Chavez, Executive Director of FUNDarte, says that, “Tiempo Libre is a Miami treasure who, with their genre-bending Bach in Havana, has received global acclaim. The nurturing of local artists who can then tour their work throughout the world is one of our goals with the Miami On Stage project.”

The Tiempo Libre concert begins at 8:00 pm at the Byron Carlyle Theater, located at 500 71st Street, on Miami Beach. Tickets for Tiempo Libre are $20 general admission, $15 students (under 25) & seniors (over 65) with I.D. Tickets may be purchased in advance through Ticketmaster at www.ticketmaster.com and by phone (800) 745-3000 (service charges apply). They are also available in-person at the Byron Carlyle the day of show and in advance at the Colony Theatre box office (1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach), Tuesday through Saturday, Noon to 5:00 pm (no service charges). A limited number of $15 discounted general admission tickets are also available for 33141 zip code buyers with I.D. in-person at both theater box offices only. More information about the Miami On Stage series and the upcoming Tiempo Libre concert can be found online at www.fundarte.us or by contacting FUNDarte at info@fundarte.us or (305) 316-6165.

Miami On Stage will continue on the first Saturday of each month, through June of this year. On May 1, again at the Byron Carlyle, there will be an evening with three solo Hip Hop theater artists, Rudi Goblen, Summer Hill Seven and Meshaun Lebrone Arnold. This program is co-presented with Miami Light Project. On June 5th there will be two performances Hilo,(Thread), by Jose Dominguez, directed by Lucia Aratanha, and Sipping Fury from a Teacup, created by Elizabeth Doud & Jennylin Duany and performed by Elizabeth Doud and Carlos Caballero. In addition to each Saturday’s featured performance, there will be free tie-in events throughout the week in the North Beach neighborhood, including panel discussions with the artists, special programs for youth and outdoor activities. These will include free yoga classes on the beach Mondays and Fridays at 7:00 am at Ocean Terrace and 73 Street, as well as a Farmer’s market in Normandy Isle Circle Saturdays from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Bienvenidos a Taschen Store Miami Opening 3/20/10

Bienvenidos a TASCHEN Store Miami:

There are some who say that TASCHEN publishes the most exquisite books on the planet. Certainly, since 2001 we have strived to create exquisite TASCHEN Stores in our planet’s most vibrant and exciting cities. Our aim has always been to provide our customers with elegant and inspirational surroundings in which to explore our books. And so, following Paris, New York, Los Angeles, London, Brussels, Berlin, Hamburg and Copenhagen, we knew our next stop must be the gateway to all things sunny and paradisial, Miami Beach.

We are pleased to announce the opening of our newest and warmest location, the TASCHEN Store Miami. Located in the heart of South Beach on Lincoln Road, the TASCHEN Store Miami is one of only thirteen high-end storefronts located in a brand new building designed by Swiss architect’s Herzog & de Meuron. Like all TASCHEN Stores, the Miami space was conceived by legendary French designer Philippe Starck. We also commissioned British artist Toby Ziegler to create both a dazzling series of floor-to-ceiling murals and an elaborately patterned hand-poured terrazzo floor made entirely of stones indigenous to south Florida.

The TASCHEN Store Miami will be open from 11am – 10pm Sunday through Thursday, and from 11am – 11pm Fridays and Saturdays. The space will carry the full range of TASCHEN titles from contemporary and classic art, photography, design, architecture, sex, travel, cinema and pop culture, as well as a selection of our Spanish and Portuguese language titles.

Please join us on Saturday afternoon from 4-6pm for an opening celebration with drinks, music by DJ Faux Real, and all things TASCHEN.

Recent Acquisitions From The Wolfsonian Collection +5 Opens 4/23/10

‘+ 5: RECENT ACQUISITIONS FROM THE WOLFSONIAN COLLECTION’ OPENS APRIL 23, 2010
Collection Strengthened With Five Years of Gifts and Acquisitions

On the occasion of its fifteenth anniversary, The Wolfsonian–Florida International University presents +5: Recent Acquisitions from The Wolfsonian Collection, an exhibition showcasing the dynamic growth of the museum’s collection over the past five years. +5 highlights approximately 100 objects obtained through donation or acquisition, adding depth and breadth to the collection’s already strong foundation of art and design.

The exhibition, on view April 23, 2010 through September 26, 2010, features objects acquired through donation or purchase since The Wolfsonian’s previous exhibition X: A Decade of Collection in September 2005 and includes decorative arts, architectural elements, books, posters, and printed ephemera. The new acquisitions strengthen and broaden the collection’s core themes of design reform, urbanism, travel and transportation, advertising, and political propaganda.

“The opening of +5 and the celebration of The Wolfsonian’s fifteenth anniversary provides us an amazing opportunity to reflect on the growth of the collection and recognize the significant role donors have played shaping the museum’s success in the last five years,” notes Sarah Schleuning, The Wolfsonian’s curator.

Some of the exhibition highlights include:
· A large unusual Teco bottle vase with a swirled base designed by Fritz Albert, c. 1905. The vase is a rare and outstanding example of the American Arts and Crafts movement.
· A significant collection of photochroms (color lithographs) by William Henry Jackson, the American photographer known especially for his images of American Indians and of the West. His photographs of Yellowstone played a critical role in establishing the country’s first national park.
· A tabletop sculpture by Gio Ponti and Tomaso Buzzi designed for the Italian Foreign Ministry and produced by Richard-Ginori.
· A chrome-plated floor torchère or floor lamp designed by Eliel Saarinen and Walter von Nessen. The lamp, donated by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, was from Duke’s estate in Hillsborough, New Jersey.
· A rare oversized portfolio illustrated by artist and activist Hugo Gellert that was published in 1943 in a limited edition of fifty-four. The portfolio contains double-page plates with excerpts of speeches by Vice President Henry A. Wallace and full-page, silk-screened illustrations.
· A historically significant oak sideboard for the Oak Parlour in Old Heath Hall by Thomas Jeckyll.
· Exceptional art moderne paintings, songbooks, and other works from the Franck MacCoy (Mac) Harshberger archive.
· Delicate watercolors of local scenes created as part of the Florida Art Project for the WPA.

The Wolfsonian’s collection originated with thousands of objects privately held by founder Mitchell Wolfson, Jr., which was subsequently donated to Florida International University. Over the past fifteen years, the collection has grown through the gifts of many private donors and collectors, as well as carefully determined acquisitions. Many of the gifts have been donated in the last five years by a wide-range of local, national, and international collectors, including: New York collector Leonard A. Lauder with a significant gift of American World War Two graphic works; Illinois collector and former CEO of Sara Lee Corporation, John Bryan with rare works from the British Arts and Crafts period; prolific artist and art director Steven Heller with books and ephemeral items related to twentieth century totalitarian governments; New York area collector Gregg G. Seibert with the Teco bottle vase and Frank Lloyd Wright textile block; longtime Wolfsonian supporter and former board member Fred Sharf with a substantial collection of automobile design drawings constituting the bulk of the current Styled for the Road exhibition; and independent scholar Jewel Stern with several important silver works from the early twentieth century. “We’re very fortunate that our approach to interpreting and presenting the collection has inspired many people,” notes Wolfsonian director, Cathy Leff. “We’re delighted that our collection has drawn from significant national collectors such as Leonard A. Lauder, chairman of the Estée Lauder Companies, to local collectors such as Laurence Miller, former executive director of libraries at Florida International University.

Comprised of 120,000 objects including paintings, furniture, sculptures, works on paper, ephemeral items, rare books and graphic design produced primarily in Europe and North America from 1885 to 1945, The Wolfsonian collection encourages a multidisciplinary approach of viewing objects as both agents and expressions of change. With its exhibitions and educational programs, The Wolfsonian continues to offer the public an exploration of the social, political, and technological allusions contained in the design of everyday objects. “We are proud of our accomplishments and the growth of our collection during these last five years. We aim to be the single most important resource for the 1885-1945 era and we are optimistic that we will continue building a strong institution that will serve academic and general audiences for years to come,” remarks Cathy Leff.

About The Wolfsonian–Florida International University

The Amernet String Quartet, Ensemble-in-Residence at Florida International University, has garnered worldwide praise and recognition as one of today’s exceptional string quartets. The ensemble rose to international attention after only one year of existence, after winning the Gold Medal at the 7th Tokyo International Music Competition in 1992. Three years later the group was the First Prize winner of the prestigious 5th Banff International String Quartet Competition. The Amernet String Quartet has been described by The New York Times as “an accomplished and intelligent ensemble”, and by the Nürnberger Nachrichten (Germany) as “fascinating with flawless intonation, extraordinary beauty of sound, virtuosic brilliance and homogeneity of ensemble”.

The Amernet String Quartet was formed in 1991, while two of its members were students at The Juilliard School. Founding members Marcia Littley and Javier Arias have been joined by fellow Juilliard graduates, violinist Misha Vitenson and violist Michael Klotz. Their busy performance schedule has taken the group to major musical centers and smaller cities across the United States. They also have performed concerts in Japan, Canada, Germany, France, Switzerland, Korea, Mexico, and Romania. The Amernet’s New York debut was at Merkin Hall in 1994, with a return engagement in 1995. Subsequent New York appearances include Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall in 1996 and 1998, the Americas Society in 1998, and Alice Tully Hall in 1997 and 1998, which The New York Times described as “immensely satisfying… most notable for the quality of unjaded discovery that came through so vividly.”

From September of 2000 until May 2004 the Amernet String Quartet was Corbett String Quartet in Residence at Northern Kentucky University, where they headed the Patricia A. Corbett String Program. Previous to that, the group held a residency at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music where they taught chamber music for four years. The Amernet String Quartet has received grants from the Corbett Foundation, the Greater Cincinnati Foundation, the LaSalle Foundation, the Fine Arts Fund, the Cincinnati Chamber Music Society and the Amernet Society for school outreach projects, commissions of new chamber music works and for their unique concert and conversation series. The group was the recipient of a Chamber Music Rural Residency Award in 1995. During that year they divided their time among the communities of Johnstown, Somerset and Indiana, Pennsylvania.
The Amernet Quartet has conducted workshops and master classes in Buffalo NY, Memphis TN, Erie PA, Los Angeles CA, Logan UT and other cities. They were founders of The Norse Festival, a summer chamber music workshop at Northern Kentucky University providing an opportunity for young musicians from the region to work intensively in chamber groups, under their guidance. Currently they host an annual summer Chamber Music Camp in Miami called Animato. The group has recorded the Concerto for Clarinet, Oboe, String Quartet and Bass by John Harbison with Sara Lambert Bloom and Charles Neidich as soloists, “The Butterflies began to Sing” a work for String Quartet, Bass, MIDI keyboard and computer, by Morton Subotnick, a complete CD of quartets by American composer Stephen Dankner, as well as a recording of the Debussy String Quartet and the Chausson Concerto for Piano, Violin and String Quartet. Chopin Vodka’s 200L hand-blown, bottle will be on display from March 8-14 before being auctioned for the GRAMMY Foundation® later this year.

To celebrate the 200th anniversary of Frederic Chopin’s birth, Chopin Vodka created a hand-blown, seven-foot tall, 200-liter bottle. This is the largest bottle of vodka ever produced and is an exact replica of Chopin Vodka’s signature bottle.

The 200-liter bottle has kicked off its national tour and one of its first stops is The Raleigh Hotel in South Beach, March 8 – 11, 2010. There will be a series of intimate events with local professional and cultural organizations, leading up to the anniversary event on Thursday, March 11.

The series of events launches “Seven” at The Raleigh, a spirited new happy hour in the hotel’s famed Martini Bar with martinis, light bites and valet each priced at $7, seven days a week, from 5 – 8 pm.

The Chopin Vodka 200-liter bottle features autographs by several luminaries from the film world who attended the Santa Barbara International Film Festival – where the bottle debuted on the red carpet – including Oscar winners Sandra Bullock, Kathryn Bigelow and Jeff Bridges, as well as Forest Whitaker, James Cameron, Emily Blunt, Kirk Douglas, Quentin Tarantino, Carey Mulligan, Saoirse Ronan, Michael Stuhlbarg, Julianne Moore, Gabourey Sidibe, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Vera Farmiga and Colin Firth.

Inspired by its namesake, Chopin Vodka will auction the bottle later this year to benefit the GRAMMY Foundation® and its important work in music preservation and archiving, guaranteeing a minimum donation of $50,000.

“Chopin Vodka has always been a serious sponsor of the arts. This new partnership with the GRAMMY Foundation is another example of how committed we are to supporting initiatives that align with our brand,” states Guillaume Grillon, brand manager of Chopin Vodka.

“Protecting our cultural legacy is central to the GRAMMY Foundation’s mission,” says Kristen Madsen, senior vice president of the GRAMMY Foundation. “That work includes preserving endangered recordings of composers as iconic as Chopin to lesser known but equally influential artists, and we are grateful for the generous support of Chopin Vodka to our ongoing programs.” About Chopin Vodka Chopin Vodka embodies purity, independence, authenticity and distinction, qualities which clearly inspired the striking bottle design and which are reinforced by the brand’s uniquely creamy, full-bodied flavor from naturally grown potatoes. 2010 is the third consecutive year of Chopin Vodka’s partnership with the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. It is also the 200th anniversary of Frederic Chopin’s birth, and to celebrate, the brand debuted on the red carpet, a 200-liter bottle – the largest bottle of vodka ever produced. For recipes and more information about Chopin Vodka, please visit www.facebook.com/ChopinVodka and follow our Twitter feed at http://twitter.com/ChopinVodka.

About The GRAMMY Foundation® The GRAMMY Foundation® was established in 1989 to cultivate the understanding, appreciation and advancement of the contribution of recorded music to American culture — from the artistic and technical legends of the past to the still unimagined musical breakthroughs of future generations of music professionals. The Foundation accomplishes this mission through programs and activities that engage the music industry and cultural community as well as the general public. The Foundation works in partnership year-round with its founder, The Recording Academy®, to bring national attention to important issues such as the value and impact of music and arts education and the urgency of preserving our rich cultural heritage. She will take to the stage to preview this and other new tracks from her upcoming album, All of Me. Up-and-coming rapper Rye Rye hails from Baltimore where she developed her unique club sound alongside DJ/Producer Blaqstarr. After hearing her work, M.I.A. signed her to her Interscope imprint N.E.E.T. Following the success of the singles “Bang” and “Shake It To The Ground”. Rye Rye’s debut album will be released in 2010.

Featuring eye popping cherry-red sofas, black lacquered walls, lipstick-pink panels, an “Alice In Wonderland” array of custom-designed chandeliers, and a Baccarat-inspired chandelier pit – a modern take on a traditional fireplace – Mokai’s design embraces modern New York sensibility and Miami joie de vivre. Other eye candy elements include a collectors selection of art and fashion photography, contemporary Moroccan lattice work, and a grand showcase bar.

Mokai presents its grand opening this Saturday, celebrating a new happy house night featuring sounds by guest DJ Spen. With a career spanning more than 20 years, Spen has become one of the most sought-after DJs in the U.S. Today, Spen can be found jetting off to gigs at some of the premier clubs around the world while juggling his demanding studio work. Join us this Saturday for a Grand Opening featuring mindblowing music, a chic new vibe, and other surprise tricks and treats.

Miami Beach Cinematheque hosts Miami official Oscar Night America celebration 3/7/10

MIAMI BEACH FILM SOCIETY’S CINEMATHEQUE and SMITH & WOLLENSKY
HOST 2010 OSCAR NIGHT® AMERICA, MIAMI BEACH
Miami Beach Film Society’s Cinematheque chosen as beneficiary for the eighth year in a row

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has selected the Miami Beach Film Society’s Cinematheque for the eighth year in a row to host and be the beneficiary of the official celebration in Miami for the Oscar Night® America (ONA) party. Oscar Night® America viewing parties are the official nationwide celebrations of the Oscars®. ONA Miami Beach 2010, presented by Miami Beach Film Society’ Cinematheque and Smith & Wollensky, will take place on Oscar® Sunday, March 7, 2010. Smith & Wollensky, the premier, waterfront steakhouse in South Beach, is located at 1 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach, FL.

Additional Oscar Night® sponsors include Francis Ford Coppola Presents, Audio Visual Services, Miami International Film Festival, BP Branding, SOFI, LUCA LUCA, and Perry Ellis.

The Oscar Night® America, Miami Beach red carpet and silent auction will be hosted by diva extraordinaire Miss Elaine Lancaster. Red carpet arrivals will begin at 6:00 p.m. offering fabulous evening looks courtesy of LUCA LUCA and Perry Ellis. All fashion will be showcased by Posche Models with hair styling and make-up by Femme Coiffure Hair Spa. Guests will then watch the Oscar® telecast live from the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center® in Hollywood starting at 8:00 p.m. (EST) on WPLG Local-10. Attendees will toast Oscar winners while enjoying Smith & Wollensky’s signature three-course dinner with Director’s Cut Chardonnay and Diamond Collection Claret by Coppola Wines, while bidding on exciting items during the event’s silent auction. Oscar® fans will also be able to predict the night’s winners using a ballot system and become eligible to win great prizes! Oscar Night® promises an experience that exudes the classic glamour and luxury of the 82nd Annual Academy Awards, complete with the Academy Awards® show program booklet for all guests.

The Miami Beach Cinematheque is Miami’s leading art cinema, an all digital screening room and photographic arts gallery located at 512 Española Way on South Beach, with programming throughout the year including screenings of Oscar® winning and nominated films in many categories. This year’s annual ONA fundraising event will benefit the Cinematheque’s upcoming move to the historic Miami Beach City Hall in summer 2010. MBC is the only officially sanctioned beneficiary of the Miami Oscar Night® America.

Oscar Night® America, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ grassroots program, enables local charities to be the official hosts of glamorous Oscar® viewing parties across the country. Since its inception in 1994, Oscar Night® America has generated funding for a wide spectrum of charitable organizations — every cent staying within the community where it was raised, none of it going to the Academy. ONA, now in its second decade, has raised nearly $17.5 million for charities throughout the United States.

Tickets to the 2010 Oscar Night America Miami Beach are available for $150 or $125 for Miami Beach Film Society & Cinematheque and MIFF members. Please visit www.MBCinema.com for tickets. For sponsorship opportunities or press inquiries, contact Gino Campodonico at TARA, Ink., 305.864.3434 ext. 156.

ArtCenter/South Florida Opening reception Ritual and Process 2/27/10

ArtCenter/South Florida presents the opening reception for Ritual and Process, a guide to sanity and survival in the soon-to-be-present this Saturday night February 27th, 7-10pm.

From February 26 to March 28, 2010, the 800 Lincoln Road Gallery will be home to a medley of icons from the past depicting – even predicting – the direction of our consumer society. Artists Orlando Estrada, Rosemarie Romero and Kacey Westall Keogh combine their works to comment on the evolution of the human experience. Using their intuition and low-tech media, they focus on the preservation and deconstruction of history, current events and their own frustrations with an uncertain world. The event and exhibit are free and open to the public. www.artcentersf.org.

Ritual and Process was conceived as a reaction and reflection to Estrada, Romero and Keogh’s life in the information age. Born into “Generation Y”, their upbringing was marked by pervasive communication devices, mass media and digital technologies in which daily life consists of sensory bombardment, spiritual loss and social alienation. In a culture where the media shapes the sense of reality for many, religion has been replaced by the worship of consumer products, pop icons and photojournalism that according to the artists, illustrates the apocalypse.

Grand Opening of The Strip on South Beach 3/4/10

This has now been unexpectedly delayed until next week. The launch dates are now scheduled for the following week – March 4, 5, and 6.

New Miami Beach Nightclub Serves Up Daring Burlesque at The Strip
South Beach Club Takes the Lead in Showcasing World Class Performance Art

In the heart of South Beach, The Strip, a new exclusive nightclub is setting a new bar for nightlife entertainment. The décor is best described as the Golden Age of Hollywood and you’ll feel as if you just stepped into a very naughty femme fatale’s boudoir: plush velvet seating, suspended swings, 12-foot crystal chandeliers, and walls covered with leather, fringe, and feathers — creating the perfect pleasure den to showcase burlesque and cutting-edge performance art. The Strip will leave you breathless with its raw sex appeal.

The Strip has pulled together a “Dream Team” of entertainment that will create the buzz and define the Strip. Emmy nominated Glenn Douglas Packard , says, “The Strip is going to be a new pleasure playground in Miami Beach.” Packard has worked with the likes of Michael Jackson, Pink, Usher, and Missy Elliot. DJ Jeffrey Tonnensen , has performed at top events around the globe and now he is music stylist for The Strip. His diverse sets at Socialista, Beatrice, and Gold Bar have been the dance soundtrack of downtown Manhattan nightlife and now he is crafting the musical identity for The Strip. Words can’t describe WildChild. Adding a strong dose of sexuality to his acts, he is contortionist and a chameleon, always mesmerizing and always surprising — making him a true performance artist without peer. Performer, vocalist and songwriter Tokyo Diiva is living art and describes her style as “A living caricature with a sprinkle of animation!” Add tantalizing VIP hostesses and you’ve got a phantasmagorical mouthwatering icing on the cake.

Designed by Lisa Halloran, the nightclub is on two open levels, yet the space feels intimate rather than cavernous and state-of-the-art technology reigns. Available for private parties, product launches or special events, The Strip is located at 330 Lincoln Road in Miami Beach and is scheduled to open Thursday, March 4, 2010. 2009 *Talent Quest Miami competition
Advance Tickets available here.
Advance tickets online $15. At the door: $20.
ABOUT RACHEL
Rachel Currea began composing consistently when she was 19 years old as a way to relax from the rigors of classical music training and the demands of college and work. Shortly after she composed her first few pieces, she suffered a serious auto accident with head trauma. For the next ten years Rachel found it nearly impossible to compose, but continued to perform and teach piano. Her breakthrough in composing again came with learning the art of meditation. Her CD of piano solos, “Inner Sound” is a tribute to this creative and personal breakthrough.

Rachel waited until the last minute to enter the 2009 Talent Quest Miami competition and, as writer Lynette Zilio commented in the Miami Herald, “Last was certainly not least at 2009 Talent Quest Miami* finale. Pianist and composer Rachel Currea, the last of 12 performers, took home $500 and the opportunity to showcase her work after blowing the judges away with her original piece, ‘Hear Me Now’.” ~Lynette Zilio – The Miami Herald (Jul 28, 2009)

The Blacks Annual Gala at at the Fontainebleau 2/27/10

From Michael Capponi
I want to invite you to come to an amazing party, The Blacks Annual Gala on Saturday, February 27th benefiting at-risk kids in need and Project Medishare in Haiti — two very important causes that are close to my heart and concern.
Your purchase of a table or ticket goes directly to these causes.
Lea and Roy Black, our hosts always seem to top themselves every year and this year will be no different. We have a great list of celebrities attending, incredible auction items, exquisite boutiques and many more surprises.
This year’s event will be held on February 27th at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach.
You may also know, that I have been extremely touched by the disaster caused by the earthquake in Haiti, following a personal trip that I made there that changed my life forever. When I went to Lea to express my distress at what I had seen in Haiti, and brainstorm what we could do, she immediately generously offered to donate to this cause and also make a portion of the proceeds from your attendance and other items benefit Project Medishare, founded by Dr. Barth Green, who will also be recognized at the gala.
You have the opportunity to earmark your ticket if you would like to specify directly who your donation is for.
Either way, your money will be going to two great causes. Help us help Haiti and kids in need right here in our backyard. It is not too late to be part of something great and change a life.
I hope to see you February 27th at the Fontainebleau. Tickets and tables are selling fast!

New Miami On Stage series begins with a free concert by Anabel and Ke o Ke 3/6/10

New “Miami On Stage” Series
Presenting South Florida Performing Artists
Begins Saturday March 6 With A Free Concert By Anabel & Ke o Ke

A community’s culture is created by those who live and work there. Miami already has a homegrown, exciting contemporary performing arts scene, but it can only continue to grow if area artists have high-quality, public showcases that expose their talent to South Florida audiences. The new Miami On Stage project will do just that by presenting locally produced work on a regular basis. It will feature some of the best of Miami’s performing artists in a series that takes place in Miami Beach’s North Beach neighborhood, beginning March 6 with a free “tropical fusion” concert by Anabel & Ke o Ke at the North Beach Open Space Park. Miami On Stage is produced by FUNDarte, one of the South Florida’s most adventurous and successful presenters of alternative culture, particularly with a Latin flavor.

Singer Anabel is based in South Florida but was born in Cuba to a musical family. She has been a member of such groups as Salsabrava and Retrozon, as well as pursuing her solo career as an interpreter of diverse musical styles, including salsa, bolero and son. Since 2005 Anabel has been based in South Florida and led her own group, Ke o Ke, showcasing her unique fusion style. She has shared the stage with musicians such as Willy Chirino. Albita Rodriguez and Cachao. This first Miami On Stage concert, just steps away from the ocean in a beautiful outdoor setting, begins at 4:00 pm as the sun begins to go down, and promises to be a hip-shaking musical journey through contemporary Latin musical genres. It is co-presented with the City of Miami Beach as part of its Arts in the Parks program.

“We are so pleased to be able to launch our new, annual Miami On Stage series this year, and provide a professional venue for contemporary, regional performing artists who the general public here is often not exposed to, “ says Ever Chavez, Executive Director of FUNDarte. More information about the upcoming Anabel concert, which is free and does not require a ticket, and the entire series, can be found online at www.fundarte.us or by contacting FUNDarte at info@fundarte.us or (305) 316-6165. North Beach Open Space Park’s entrance is at 81 Street and Collins Avenue.

Miami On Stage will continue on the first Saturday of each month, through June of this year. April 3rd will feature the great timba band Tiempo Libre at North Beach’s Byron Carlyle Theater with the Miami premiere performance of their Bach in Havana, a salsa meets Classical music mash-up based on the CD of the same name, which this year was nominated for a Grammy Award. Tickets on Sale Now!

The Closest Farthest Away at the Byron Carlyle Theatre on Miami Beach 3/11-13/10

MIAMI LIGHT PROJECT, CENTRO CULTURAL ESPAÑOL(CCE) AND FUNDARTE PRESENT THE US PREMIERE OF THE CLOSEST FARTHEST AWAY
(below information in spanish)
Miami Light Project, Centro Cultural Español (CCE) and FUNDartre prosily present the US premiere of the multi media theatre work The Closest Farthest Away March 11-13, 2010 at the Byron Carlyle Theatre on Miami Beach.

The Closest Farthest Away (La Entranable Lejania) is the first of its kind – a multi-media theater piece created by filmmakers, theater artists, and musicians from the US and Cuba. Using cinema and live performance to cross the impossible boundaries that keep the US and Cuba apart; multi-channel video installation is projected against live actors to create a dramatic metaphor for the impossibility of exchange between two countries. Tapping into the physical presence of live performance and the defiance of space and time that is cinema, an impossible world is created-one in which Cuban and American performers exist together on the same stage.

Called “A groundbreaking hybrid work of film and theatre… incorporating a beautiful, nearly holographic interaction between Cuban actors on film and American actors on stage.” by American Theater Magazine, The Closest Farthest Away had its world premiere at the Havana Film Festival in December 2009.

The Closest Farthest Away is the first of its kind — a process-driven social and artistic experiment between Americans and Cubans to create a story that reflects contemporary ideas from multiple points of view. The collaborative process is interdisciplinary in approach where the artists from every medium contribute their ideas to the whole. The script was co-written by playwrights, filmmakers, composers, and theater artists from both countries and the film involved three directors and a bi-national crew of over 40 people working together in different languages. An ongoing inquiry into the mystery of this multi-faceted exploration occurred throughout one year of conversations over the internet and in person between artists in Los Angeles, Miami, and Havana.

The Closest Farthest Away was created by composer Sage Lewis whose work as a composer and sound designer for live performance, animation, and video has been featured at venues such as the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and the REDCAT and holds an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts and a BA from the Oberlin Conservatory in Music Composition. It is directed by Los Angeles based theatre director Chi-wang Yang is a Los Angeles-based theater director and digital media artist. Committed to physical performance and interdisciplinary collaboration, his work synthesizes stage, media, and technology. His work has been featured at REDCAT (Los Angeles), New York International Fringe Festival, the Edinburgh International Festival Fringe, Time-Based Arts Festival (Portland), and the Platform International Animation Festival. He is a recipient of the 2006 Princess Grace Award for Theater Directing. Raúl Pérez Ureta, the award winning Cuban Cinematographer has shot over 40 features and shorts around the world.

Tickets: $25.00

Rachel Currea Grand Winner of Talent Quest Miami A Piano Recital Showcase 2/27/10

Join Us on Saturday, February 27th at 8pm
when Arts at St Johns presents
pianist/composer, Rachel Currea’s
“A Piano Recital Showcase”
featuring original compositions and classical favorites
at Arts at St Johns, 4760 Pine Tree Drive, Miami Beach, FL 33140

Excerpt from Examiner article by George Leposky 2009:
“The audience at Rachel Thomas Currea’s recent piano concert heard a truly remarkable program, comprising her own compositions interspersed with classics spanning the centuries from Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757) through Frederik Chopin (1810-1849) to George Gershwin (1898-1937).

Although Currea describes herself as a New Age pianist and composer, her own music springs from classical roots and draws upon her formal education, which includes bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music from the University of Miami. Yet, there’s nothing formalistic about her music.

In remarks at the beginning of the concert, Currea explained that she composes music to describe her feelings andexperiences, justassomepeoplewritediariesinwords.” (read full article here)

Acura ZDX 7 City Launch Party kicks off in Miami at the W Hotel 2/25/10

ACURA ZDX REDEFINES NEXT WITH SEVEN-CITY POP-UP EXHIBITION TOUR
FEATURING FASHION AND FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHER ERIK MADIGAN HECK

Private Launch Party at W Miami, February 25, 2010
Followed By Dallas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Washington D.C., New York City

Acura, the automotive luxury brand that has been setting the standard in automotive design and engineering for over two decades, will present their latest model, the all-new 2010 Acura ZDX four-door sports coupe, in Miami, Florida on Thursday, February 25, 2010 at the W South Beach at a private launch party. The event will mark the launch of a seven-city tour featuring the vehicle and the works of renowned photographer Erik Madigan Heck.

The Acura ZDX started as a forward-thinking design project, with Acura stylists allowed full creative freedom to execute their vision of a sophisticated, luxurious four-door sports coupe. This idea of creative freedom is also reflected in Erik Madigan Heck’s works – making the partnership between the artist and Acura a natural fit. At just 26-years-old, he is already an established force in fine art and fashion photography, having shot the collections of the world’s finest designers including Valentino Garavani, Christian Lacroix, Jean Paul Gaultier and Helmut Lang. Additionally, Erik Madigan Heck is the editor in chief and creative director of Nomenus Quarterly, a hybrid online/print publication that features the world’s most influential artists, institutions and fashion designers.

The exhibition will showcase Erik Madigan Heck’s photography amongst high concept art, sculptures, and video installations as a means of communicating the artistic vision behind the ZDX. The segment bending ZDX features stunning coupe-like styling with the added benefit of a commanding presence and flexible utility. The ZDX is the first vehicle to be styled from start to finish in the new Acura Design Studio in Torrance, CA, allowing exterior and interior designers to work closely together throughout the entire design process. Staying true to the original vision and sketches of the Acura design team, the ZDX features sensuous curves, deeply sculpted shoulders and strong character lines.

In creating the ZDX, the design team sought influence beyond the world of automotive luxury. Inspired by solar shades at the St. Regis in San Francisco, the panoramic glass roof has a power-operated sunshade that is made of a special mesh material that helps filter UV light. Even the natural staining of the inside of Napa Valley wine barrels led to a new color option for the interior leather.

The Acura ZDX Launch Parties Featuring Erik Madigan Heck will travel from Miami to Dallas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Washington, D.C., culminating in New York City on April 8, 2010.

Pecha Kucha Global Day For Haiti to be held at the Wolfsonian-FIU 2/20/10

PECHA KUCHA GLOBAL DAY FOR HAITI TO BE HELD AT THE WOLFSONIAN–FIU FEBRUARY 20, 2010
Global Conference Will Be Streamed Live From 276 Cities Around the World

In a matter of seconds, thousands of lives and dreams were destroyed in Haiti on January 12, 2010. Following the tragedy, aid came from many quarters, in all shapes and forms. On Saturday, February 20 from 4-6pm The Wolfsonian–Florida International University will join the PechaKucha global community and the Miami Chapter of Architecture for Humanity (AFH) to assist in the rebuilding of Haiti by taking part in a continuous 24-hour edition of PechaKucha Night.

PechaKucha Night was devised in Tokyo on February 2003 as an event for young designers to meet, network, and showcase their work in public. It has turned into a massive celebration, with events happening in hundreds of cities around the world, inspiring creatives worldwide. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of “chit chat”, it rests on a presentation format that is based on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds. It’s a format that makes presentations concise, and keeps things moving at a rapid pace.
Kicking off the series of events at the SuperDeluxe in Tokyo, where PechaKucha was first conceived seven years ago, the presentation wave will travel eastward, with cities presenting one after the other. Crossing all times zones and cultures, the events will be streamed live online and then finish in Tokyo the following day. Presentations are already being prepared, some intended to offer hope and encouragement through stories of past disaster relief projects; others as simple inspiration by showing the power of creative thinking. All of the 2,000 presentations generated from the one-day event—in what could be the world’s biggest single-day globally distributed conference—will be posted on the PechaKucha website, where visitors will also be able to make monetary donations to the project. In organizing this event, PechaKucha intends to not only raise funds through pledges from host cities and contributions from individuals, but also illustrate the power of innovative minds, creative passion, and most of all, sharing ideas for change and sustainability.

The event, which takes place at The Wolfsonian, is co-presented with PechaKucha Miami and AFH. There is a minimum ten dollar donation per person requested and all proceeds will go to AFH’s Earthquake Reconstruction in Haiti project. AFH operates globally, and was instrumental in getting projects built after the Indian Ocean tsunami and Hurricane Katrina. The design costs for the new buildings in Haiti have been already covered so all donations will go directly toward the construction of much needed schools, health clinics and community structures.

For more information about the event, visit http://www.pecha-kucha.org/pechakucha-for-haiti

About PechaKucha
PechaKucha was conceived in Tokyo in February 2003 by architects Mark Dytham and Astrid Klein as an event where young designers could meet, network and show their work in public. Over time, it has evolved into a massive celebration of creativity, with events regularly being held in over 270 cities including Miami. Last year, more than 6,000 presentations were hosted at over 600 PechaKucha events. Drawing its name from the Japanese phrase for the sound of conversation (“chit chat”), the PechaKucha format is simple—20 images x 20 seconds—and designed to keep presentations concise and moving at a rapid pace.

Photographs – Miami International Boat Show – Thursday 02/11/10

Miami International Boat Show at the Miami Beach Convention Center on Thursday, February 11, 2010.  For the better gallery, click here.

‘Phenomenon,’ 56 feet long, 13’ and 6”, with 4 turbine engine that produce 12,000 horsepower, was built to break the world’s propelled speedboat record of 220.5 mph. It was created by engineers from Boeing, former US Naval architects, & world class professional power boat builders.

The magic of this prototypical vessel lies behind the story of famed restaurateur, Al Copeland Sr. who founded Popeyes Famous Fried Chicken & Biscuits Restaurants and Copeland’s Restaurants and was the former driver of the Popeyes Offshore race team. He was a six-time National Champion who popularized the sport of off-shore racing with actor Chuck Norris in their Popeyes/Diet Coke race boat.

Unfortunately, about two years into building Phenomenon, Al Copeland Sr. was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer known as Merkel Cell Carcinoma (MCC). Just eight months after the diagnosis, he passed away. At the time of his death, Al Copeland Sr. had two goals he wanted to accomplish: One to find a cure for MCC, and two to finish the boat in order to break the world record. A southern icon, Al Copeland’s memory lives on through his 52 restaurants, hotels, and comedy clubs throughout the US and his Foundation, which is dedicated to the eradication of Merkel Cell Carcinoma

Formerly known as the “Florida Extravaganza”, proceeds from the South Beach Wine & Food Festival benefit FIU’s School of Hospitality. Over the past 10 years, over a $6 million dollars has been raised to enhance the students experience at the School of Hospitality by expanding the School of Hospitality Teaching Restaurant and the Southern Wine & Spirits Beverage Management Center. Hundreds of thousands of dollars were set aside for student scholarships.
In addition to lending their services to the cause of benefiting FIU’s School of Hospitality, many chefs worked with numerous students individually, offer the students an unparalleled experience. At this year’s Festival, students will be paired with, in a mentorship style relationship, the following chefs: John Besh (Restaurant August, New Orleans), Scott Conant/Michael Priolo (Scarpetta/ Miami Beach), Todd English (Olives, NYC), Adam Perry Lang (Daisy May’s BBQ, NYC), Emeril Lagasse (Emeril’s/New Orleans), Masaharu Morimoto (Morimoto, NYC), Tom Neely (Neely’s Bar-B-Que, Memphis), Alfred Portale/John Suley (Gotham Steak, Miami Beach), Sue Zemanick (Gatreau’s, New Orleans), among others.
“The students of FIU are the real winners of this festival. They provide tireless support for the four-day weekend of events while reaping indispensable real world industry experience,” says Joan Remington, Interim Dean, FIU School of Hospitality.
FIU Hospitality Management senior AJ Mindermann, assistant culinary manager at the 2009 festival, knows first hand the value of working with industry leaders in a real-world experience. “The experience is priceless,” Mindermann said. “You can’t put a number on it. I got so many internship opportunities from chefs last year. The networking is terrific. It’s probably one of the biggest career-jumpers there is.”
Having just completed his second year in a leadership role at the Festival, Arthur was honored with the Barilla Best FIU Student Chef Award, and a $1500 cash prize. Barilla established this award to recognize students at FIU’s School of Hospitality and who exhibit their commitment to and passion for the culinary arts.
Hundreds of other students benefit from real-world experience at the Festival. Experiences range from fulfilling thousands of ticket orders to restaurant solicitation, sponsorship fulfillment to meeting and greeting guests at myriad activities throughout the annual four-day festival. Overall, some 850 Hospitality majors – most with excellent internship experience already under their belts – worked in a variety of key capacities both before and during the festival.

“I hear comments like ‘the experience changed my life’,” said FIU Chef-Instructor and South Beach Wine & Food Festival Culinary Director, Michael Moran. “You don’t expect to go to school and have a teacher say that there’s a field trip to cook barbecue for 500 people.”

It’s little wonder that so many famed names are willing to lend their time and expertise to the festival and to FIU students. Hospitality and tourism industry executives from around the world visit the school annually to interview and hire graduates for key management-track positions in the vast array of fields in which FIU’s students are prepared. Today many of the school’s 9,000 graduates hold prominent positions in the hospitality industry around the Western Hemisphere, Europe and Asia.

Students at FIU’s School of Hospitality are highly sought-after for key reasons. One is the comprehensive curriculum that includes tracks for Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Hospitality Management, Executive Master of Science in Hospitality Management Degree Programs, PhD in Business Administration as well as Certificate Programs in various Hotel, Restaurant, Hospitality, Travel and Tourism specializations. Over 100 courses and 35 expert faculty members focus exclusively on hospitality and tourism management including finance, law, beverage management, culinary arts and hotel operations.

Students are required to work 1,000 hours in the hospitality industry and then complete a 300-hour internship. Upon graduation, students are prepared to compete for top positions in every aspect of the hospitality industry. To date, the School’s graduates have a 100% career placement record.

FIU’s excellence was one reason student Caroline Karlberg chose it when she decided to leave the world of finance for logistics management.

“I wanted real, hands-on experience and that was definitely something FIU’s School of Hospitality, offered in addition to its programs and staff,” Karlberg said. “I can’t believe this, but last year at this time, I was a financial analyst in New York City. And this year I am a graduate student at FIU School of Hospitality, working as a member of the Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival’s logistics team, the largest such event in the country.” Caroline, assistant to SoBe W&F Logistics Manager Susan Gladstone, is also Student Associate Coordinator, working with her team of students to place 1000 students in various jobs at the festival.

“And what I have learned is unbelievable: just the amount of moving parts and people it takes to put together such an event is mind-blowing. I have never been on this side of an event, and I had no idea what goes into the back-end. Working this event has helped me appreciate all special events.”

“We provide our students the opportunity to get their foot in the door in the hospitality field of their choice,” said Dean Remington, FIU School of Hospitality. “Our students work on the ground, having real life experiences while making important contacts with industry leaders. It is gratifying to the faculty to know that international hospitality companies and corporations are selecting our students.”

It is also reason why, year after year, top figures in the industry are eager to help contribute to FIU’s School of Hospitality.

Chef-Instructor Leads Students in the Intricacies and Delicacies of Putting on FIU’s Famed Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival

When FIU chef-instructor Michael Moran puts on a party, he wants only the best at his side. Take the high-profile Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival, presented by Food and Wine Magazine, the wildly popular, FIU-co-sponsored event that takes place from Feb. 25-28, 2010. As chef and culinary coordinator he’ll rub elbows with some of the biggest names in the industry, among them Food Network chefs Emeril Lagasse and Bobby Flay. It’s his own students, however, that Moran considers critical to success.

“It really is about finding a core of people who have this tremendous passion,” Moran says of the hundreds or so undergraduates who sign on for his course in “quantity food production.” In addition to other chores, the students take direct responsibility for getting ready all of the mea consumed during the 2009 Bubble Q BBQ: 1800 pounds of pork, 1500 pounds of beef filet, 1000 pounds of chicken, 1200 pounds of fish, 800 pounds of cabbage, and turning out several hundred pounds of nouveau potato salad, cole slaw and other side dishes for arguably the festival’s most glamorous attraction: the Friday night, champagne-drenched barbecue for over 3,000.

It took 3500 man hours to prepare 22,500 portions of food served to 3400 people attending the 2009 Bubble Q BBQ. Ordered were three tons of food for the 25 participating chefs, each preparing 900 portions.

The prep work takes place in the Miami Beach Convention Center’s hot and cold commercial kitchens, after which the food is packed into four refrigerated, 65-foot 18-wheelers and delivered to the fashionable Delano hotel on Miami Beach . There the students assist a veritable Who’s Who of professional chefs from around the country as they help cook and serve the ultimate outdoor feast.

Overall, some 850 Hospitality majors—most with excellent internship experience already under their belts—will work in a variety of key capacities both before and during the festival, from fulfilling thousands of ticket orders to meeting and greeting guests at myriad activities throughout the long weekend, among them wine and food seminars and a celebrity golf tournament.

For the most part, Chef Moran is educating not just would-be chefs, but the future managers of restaurant groups, hotel chains, cruise lines and related companies—this is a business school, after all. Moran wants to make sure his charges know how to bake chocolate chip cookies, prepare relatively simple dishes like arroz con pollo and, by the end of the semester, quickly build an entire dinner around ingredients he hands them in class. His self-stated goal: “I have to take away the intimidation of the kitchen.” Come festival time, they’re usually ready for anything.

But it’s not just cooking the veteran chef covers. “I’m teaching the whole individual,” explains Moran, who trains students how to work together, respond quickly to commands and generally get comfortable with the frenetic pace often associated with meeting the public’s expectations.
At the 2009 Festival, students were paired with in a mentorship style the following chefs: John Besh (Restaurant August, New Orleans), Kenny Callaghan (Blue Smoke, NYC), Todd English (Olives, NYC), Roger Herring (Socca/Chicago), Elizabeth Karmel (Hill Country/NYC) Adam Perry Lang (Daisy May’s BBQ, NYC), Emeril Lagasse (Emeril’s/New Orleans), Tim Love (Lonesome Dove Western Bistro/Ft. Worth), Missy Robbins (A Voce/NYC), Aaron Sanchez (Centrico/NYC), among others.
Chef Moran who has an established relationship with Miami’s Daily Food Bank, was able to, with his team, recover 6495 pounds of food from the 2009 Bubble Q, Burger Bash and the Grand Tasting demos, which translates to 38,970 meals. “This is truly incredible!!” exclaimed Chef Moran. “So much more than double last year. I’m proud that the food was not wasted, and that so many people were able to eat their fill of fine home-made food.”

Almost $2 million dollars was raised for FIU School of Hospitality to award student scholarships, and to enhance the experience of students by investing in program, faculty and facility enhancement.

With partner Southern Wine & Spirits of Florida, a division of the country’s largest beverage distributor, FIU presents the Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival annually as a fundraiser in support of its Teaching Restaurant Program and the Southern Wine & Spirits Beverage Management Center, both located on FIU’s Biscayne Bay Campus in North Miami . The event also provides an opportunity for the nationally ranked School and its students to contribute to South Florida ‘s reputation as a world-class travel destination and a great place to live.

“We’re part of the community. We want to make the community more successful,” Moran says. “One of the things we can bring to the table is the planning and creation of an environment to have a great time.”

Guillermo Calderon Diciembre Teatro en el blanco 2/19-20/10

Guillermo Calderón’s Diciembre
Teatro en el blanco
Friday and Saturday, February 19 – 20, 2010.
8 p.m.
Byron Carlyle Theater
500 71st St., Miami Beach
Tickets for Performance
on Friday, February 19
From the roiling imagination of Chilean writer-director Guillermo Calderón comes this politically charged, haunting drama about a near-future war in the Andes. Peppered with surprising doses of pitch-black comedy, Diciembre takes place in Santiago on Christmas Eve 2014 with the city besieged by Peruvian forces. Young soldier Jorge returns home on a 24-hour leave to celebrate the holiday with his pregnant twin sisters, who each have sharply different views on nationalism and the morality of war. One wants Jorge to defect, the other demands he return to the fight. Jorge, however, has his own take on the matter. Smartly produced by his dynamic Santiago-based company Teatro en el Blanco (“Theater on Target”), Calderón’s play strips away ostentatious theatrical conceit for us to hear clearly the terror knocking at the door. Featuring Paula Zúñiga, Trinidad González and Jorge Becker. Performed in Spanish with English supertitles.
