Opening Reception Divine Debris and Glorious Trash at Miami Beach Botanical Garden 6/15/10

The Divine Debris & Glorious Trash Art Exhibit
The Opening Reception is on Tuesday, June 15th at 7 pm at Miami Beach Botanical Garden, 2000 Convention Center Drive, Miami Beach, FL 33139.
artworks will be on display throughout the week during Garden Hours of 9 to 5pm. Admission is free.

Trashy side of Miami Beach art community exposed!

Once again the quirky, edgy creativity of Miami artists shines in works of art made of, or based on trash, debris and found materials recycled into Divine Debris & Glorious Trash for the annual exhibit at Miami Beach Botanical Garden during the week of June 14 through 17.

For weeks prior to the deadline, Miami artists were sighted rummaging through trash barrels, cruising neighborhood streets on recycle days, emptying closets and garages, and finding form and beauty in things most people would consider trash. Broken shells, fallen palm fronds, rusty metals, old post cards, shattered mirrors, tattered fashions, beads, weeds and possibly even skeletal remains of unidentified critters will be transformed into two and three-dimensional juried artworks as photographs, paintings, graphics, fiber art, multi-media and sculpture creations.

All entries in the 2010 Divine Debris & Glorious Trash Art Exhibit will feature works that incorporate some aspect of, or relationship to, Miami Beach in conjunction with the Arts at St. John’s ongoing History of Miami Beach Project.

Arts at St Johns, Artshare LLC and Miami Beach Botanical Garden are co-sponsors and presenters of this 2nd annual Divine Debris & Glorious Trash Art Exhibit. Dr. Carol Hoffman-Guzman, Founding Director of Arts at St Johns and Paula Turk, Sculptor/Photographer and Founder of ArtShare LLC are co-curators of this exhibit.

Annette Recommends Escopazzo on South Beach

Went to Escopazzo Restaurant on South Beach an Organic Italian Restaurant.  I had the rigatoni with sausage and broccoli, wow it was so good, it had so much sausage in it.  It was perfect.

We also ordered off of their raw menu which does not contain any dairy products, it is entirely vegan.  We tried the zucchini pasta. it was so tasty and yummy.  The place is so cute, has a nice cozy front room and then you go down a hallway to another room, very cozy.  So, if you find yourself on Washington Ave and hungry for nice organic Italian this is the place you should head to.

Joe Eshkenazi, famously known as DJ Joe Dert, once said that it was during his residency Rokbar that he knew he was meant to inject energy into a room and keep people on their feet until 5 a.m. So when considering locations for his latest cd release, it was only natural that the renowned drummer, producer and international DJ would launch his newest project – Volume 8 – at the swank lounge where his experiences became the catalyst for his success at the turntables.

Blending rock, hip-hop, old-school funk, house and electro with his signature mash-ups, Dert’s up-tempo set will also include samples from his latest compilation and a special live DJ and drum show performance with DJ Affect, dubbed as “The Joe Dert Affect.”

On the heels of celebrating their six-year-old anniversary, the notorious rock ‘n’ roll boutique nightclub will set the stage for Dert’s return and looks forward to celebrating the night with Miami’s nocturnal hipsters.

About DJ Joe Dert
Eshkenazi’s refreshing take on music instantly became in high demand by South Beach’s premier nightclubs and lounges including: The Forge, Set, Rokbar, Snatch & Suite, Wall at the W Hotel, Nikki Beach and contributing to the opening success of the prestigious club LIV at The Fontainebleau Hotel. Additionally, international hotspots and celebrities, including Tom Cruise, Will and Jada Smith, Eva Longoria, Michael Bay, Kim Kardashian, Lance Armstrong, Nicole Richie and Matthew McConaughey, took notice of his eclectic offerings and secured him for high-profile events and residencies in Toronto, Los Angeles, Berlin, Boston, the Bahamas, Dallas, Majorca and New York.

Eshkenzi has had the privilege to work with renowned talents in the rock and electronic industries including Ozzy Ozbourne, DJ AM, Marilyn Manson, Linkin Park, DJ Vice, Korn, Rob Zombie, Creed, Disturbed, Puddle of Mudd, Pete Tong, Evanescence, Cedric Gervais and many more. Having mastered the art of entertaining and bringing cutting-edge style to sophisticated locations, Eshkenazi has gained the reputation as a diversified artist with the ability to adapt to his surroundings and really permeate life into an event.

“Hilo” by Jose Manuel Dominguez, directed by Lucia Aratanha
Hilo (Thread) is a physical theatre project that uses movement, poetry, visual art and sound to express subjects of evolution, adjustment, modification, and adaptation to change for the sake of survival. Having lost his eyesight many years ago, writer and actor José Manuel Domínguez juxtaposes his own memories with mythological characters, and incites the audience to contemplate their own limitations and possibilities of transformation. Directed by Lucia Aratanha, “Hilo” develops in a non-traditional format. Aratanha conceptualized a set with carefully woven ropes, constructing imaginary chambers and passageways like the Labyrinth in the Greek mythology. It through this maze of ropes that the scenes move from dream to reality with no apparent chronology as a metaphor to our own mind where memories and dreams mingle. “Hilo” puts into play the realm of myths known and unknown, a world of fatal choices and unexpected mystery.

José Manuel Domínguez is graduated from the Instituto Superior de Arte, Havana, Cuba having Vicente Revuelta as his mentor. José Manuel was a member of the controversial and avant-garde theatre troupe Teatro El Publico with director Carlos Diaz. Their polemic productions were staged in Cuba, Spain and Brazil.

Lucia Aratanha arrived from her native Brazil to Miami in the 1990’s with 20 years of experience as a performer, choreographer and director. Her work has been presented at the International Hispanic Theatre Festival and Miami Light Project Here & Now Festival. Lucia had the pleasure to collaborate with artists Ricky J. Martinez, Giovanni Luquini, Gary Lund and Pablo Cano. “Hilo” is the third collaboration between José Manuel Domínguez and Lucia Aratanha.

Sipping Fury from a Tea Cup
created by Elizabeth Doud and Jennylin Duany and performed by Elizabeth Doud and Carlos Caballero

Sipping Fury from a Tea Cup is a tale of a woman, a tea cup, and a roiling pot of fertility, mutiny, destiny and honey bees, which takes place in a not so impossible future when there are no honey bees left and our pollination systems become fantastic, reckless and uncertain. Imagine a world where there are no longer any bees. Imagine a day when the pastures of plenty that we think of as guaranteed to us cease to mature into fruits and vegetables. Imagine a day when you only have enough viable soil to fit into a teacup. In the absence of these principle pollinators of the edible species we rely on for our food, and for our food’s food, the anti-heroine of our story toils in the search for revived fertility for her and the planet. This multi-disciplinary performance work explores the mystery of the disappearance of bee colonies (known as Colony Collapse Disorder), and what lengths one might go to in order to rescue our planet’s best and most threatened fertility mechanisms.

Elizabeth Doud is a performer and writer who has been influenced by many contemporary literary and movement forms, and the culture and practice of Flamenco and Capoeira. She is an independent artist and was co-Artistic Director of the Miami based Las Negras Theater Collective with collaborator Jennylin Duany. Doud arrived in Miami in 1996 to launch an unrelenting performance and collaborative stint, creating, producing and touring over a dozen original performance productions locally, nationally and abroad.

Carlos Caballero, is graduate of the Instituto Superior de Arte de la Habana. Carlos has worked as an actor in theater and specifically with Teatro El Publico and La Ventana in Cuba. Carlos has performed in over 20 plays including plays by Shakespeare, Garcia Lorca, Cocteau, and other. He has worked extensively in film and television in Italy, Spain, Brazil, Panama, Peru, Mexico, and the United States.

Each team will be given a card and assigned to a specific group (A or B). The team will then participate in tasting the wine from their group. All the numbered wines for each group will be displayed on the board. At the end of the tasting period, each team must write down the number ranking of his or her favorite wine and least favorite wine. Cards will be collected and selections tallied.

The team that brought the top wine will take home 75% of the unopened bottles of wine. The second place team will take home 25% of the unopened bottles. The team that brought the least favorite bottle of wine will take back his or her unopened bottle of wine.

If 2 (or more) teams bring the same wine, it shouldn’t matter. The rankings can still differ depending upon the temperature of the wine, how it was stored, how long it has been open, etc.

Please remember, teams can consist of UP TO 3 PEOPLE ONLY. If, for example, 4 people wish to participate, they would be considered 2 teams; thus, they will need to bring 6 bottles to enter the event. This rule will be STRICTLY enforced at the door.

Finally, if you prefer to drink out of glasses, bring your own glass as you will be able to clean your glass between tastings. We will have plastic cups available for those who do not bring a wine glass. We look forward to seeing you and please arrive on time or you will miss the competition!

MBVWS
REMEMBER THE 3 GOLDEN RULES:
1) Come with a team (and a team name!) of 2-3 people!!
2) Bring 3 of the EXACT SAME wines per team!!
3) Read and understand the rules BEFORE arriving.

About Pecha Kucha
Pecha Kucha was conceived in Tokyo in February 2003 by architects Mark Dytham and Astrid Klein as an event where young designers could meet, network and show their work in public. Over time, it has evolved into a massive celebration of creativity, with events regularly being held in 300 cities including Miami. Last year, more than 6,000 presentations were hosted at over 600 Pecha Kucha events. Drawing its name from the Japanese phrase for the sound of conversation (“chit chat”), the Pecha Kucha format is simple—20 images x 20 seconds—and designed to keep presentations concise and moving at a rapid pace. Today the estate houses a modern winery and six distinct vineyards, all of which posses unique soil, microclimate, exposure and altitude. Boasting some of the finest hillside vineyards in Tuscany, Fattoria Montellori fashions wine of great character, distinction and personality. Hermes of International Wine Imports is our guide.

The Miami International Piano Festival is celebrating its 13th Season in 2010. The May Discovery Series is held at the intimate Lincoln Theater (home of the New World Symphony) on Miami Beach. The Series opens with a sure crowd-pleaser that features works by two composers who are both celebrating 200 year anniversaries in 2010: Chopin and Schumann. To pay tribute to these prolific composers of the Romantic period, the Festival will present four fantastic pianists in one evening.
Kemal Gekic and Misha Dacic both hail from former-Yugoslavia and for this program Gekic will perform provocative Chopin selections (including Scherzo Op. 20 and Polonaise Op. 53) and Dacic tackles Schumann’s tour de force, “Humoresque.” Russian pianist Ilya Itin will offer his refined interpretation of several works by Chopin such as Fantaise in F minor and Waltz Op. 34 and Cuban legend, Jorge Luis Prats presents Schumann’s delightfully varied “Symphonic Etudes.” With so much talent and exquisite repertoire sharing the stage on one evening, this concert will likely run a bit longer than most.
On Friday, May 14th, the Festival is pleased to present the South Florida concert debut of Ran Jia (China). At twenty, Ms. Jia is already regarded as a striking musician with unusual natural abilities. Tan Dun hailed her a “piano poet with dramatic skill in music making.” Her program will feature four Sonatas by Scarlatti, Shubert’s Sonata in A minor Op. 42 and Le Tombeau de Couperin by Ravel.
The popular “Prodigies and Masters of Tomorrow” matinee concert on Saturday, May 15th will see the return of the astounding Aristo Sham (Hong Kong), now 14 years old. One could almost hear the jaws dropping at Aristo’s South Florida debut at the Festival last May. His current program will feature works by Scarlatti, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Barber and Albeniz. Families with children are encouraged to attend this concert which seeks to inspire the next generation of classical music lovers.
On Saturday evening, Spanish pianist, Claudio Martinez-Mehner will make his Florida debut. Winner of numerous prizes, Mehner recently resumed his career as a solo artist and has a respected reputation as a teacher and chamber musician. His Festival program will include Beethoven Sonata Op. 109, Schumann’s Sonata Op/ 14 “Concerto without Orchestra” as well as works by Janacek and Debussy.
This year’s grand finale and closing night “Chamber Music Extravaganza” will welcome Igor Gruppman back to South Florida. Many remember Mr. Gruppman as the Concert Master of the Florida Philharmonic and at present, he is artistic director of the Concerto Rotterdam chamber orchestra and concertmaster of the Rotterdam Philharmonic. He will be joined by his wife, violinist/violist, Vesna Gruppman who teaches at the Rotterdam Conservatory in the Netherlands. Joining the Gruppmans will be pianists Ilya Itin (Russia) and Jorge Luis Prats (Cuba) as well as a special guest cellist. The program will include Schumann’s Fantasy Pieces Op. 73 and a special String Quintet transcription of Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2. Rounding out the program will be selections by Brahms including the Piano Quartet in G minor Op. 25.
All concerts start at 8:00 p.m. except for the Saturday Matinee “Prodigies” program which begins at 2:00 p.m. A series of pre-concert Lectures and Master Classes are planned as part of the 2010 Miami International Piano Festival. The following programs are FREE and open to the public:
Friday, May 14th, 2010. 7:00 p.m. PANEL DISCUSSION: Artists and their representatives engage in a lively discussion about the challenges facing artists today, what steps are required for their continued success, how to avoid failing and also why so many have lost the drive, faith and motivation to continue concertizing.
Saturday, May 15th, 2010. 7:00 p.m. LECTURE: Frank Cooper, Research Professor of Music from the University of Miami What makes a musical personality? There are traits which distinguish musicians from the average woman or man, and traits which distinguish one musician from another. This lecture explores the characteristics that set composers and performers apart from all others, allowing for great esthetic achievements and for all too human failures.
Sunday, May 16th, 2010 7:00 p.m. FILM: “The World’s Greatest Musical Prodigies.” A three-part documentary produced by Britain’s Channel 4 Television, which is currently being distributed by American Public Television. Episode 1: Alex Prior travels to Miami at the invitation of renowned prodigy-hunter Giselle Brodsky, who runs the Miami International Piano Festival. Giselle has selected five of America’s most gifted young musicians, who have flown in from all corners of the States to audition for Alex.

Participation by AAMD member museums will focus attention on the important roles that art museums serve in their communities, further showcase their remarkable collections, and increase opportunities for audiences to engage with the many educational programs art museums offer.

On this day visitors to The Wolfsonian may enjoy—in addition to the exhibitions on view—the museum’s display of works from the Page at a Time children’s program, which features handcrafted books created by students from Miami-Dade public schools as well as the display of works from the Artful Citizenship program, a language arts and social studies curriculum that uses The Wolfsonian’s collection as its primary teaching tool. The Page at a Time and the Artful Citizenship projects, which emphasize the connections between art, history, and ideas, and explore the visual power of words and images, will be on display in the lobby of The Wolfsonian Thursday May 6 through Sunday, June 6, 2010.

Every year AAMD member museums—located across the United States, Canada, and Mexico—including The Wolfsonian celebrate International Museum Day at the invitation of the International Council of Museums (ICOM). This year’s theme, “Museums for Social Harmony,” intends to raise awareness about the role of museums in teaching social harmony to the public at large. “We believe that art museums are crucial to our understanding of world history and cultures, and provide a unique and irreplaceable public service,” said Michael Conforti, president of AAMD and director of the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, MA. “AAMD is committed to exploring new ways to underscore the value of the visual arts in civic society, and we are excited that The Wolfsonian is joining with us and the global community of museums to focus on this message of public service.”

A comprehensive list of participating AAMD member art museums will be available in the newsroom of the AAMD website. More information about ICOM’s International Museum Day can be found here.

The Page at a Time program is made possible by Carnival Foundation, with special thanks to the Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

Artful Citizenship is funded by the Children’s Trust, a dedicated source of revenue established by voter referendum to improve the lives of children and families in Miami-Dade County. With support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County and Board of County Commissioners.

Sneak Peek at the Fisker Worlds First Premium Plug-In Hybrid at Fontainbleau 5/15/10

Warren Henry Automobiles to host reception at Fontainebleau Miami Beach

Fisker Karma, the world’s first premium plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, will be in Miami for the first time when Warren Henry displays the Karma at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach,
4441 Collins Avenue
May 15th, beginning at 10:00 AM at the main valet entrance.
Hosted cocktail reception, 6p – 8p
RSVP to “Karma”: rsvp@warrenhenryauto.com

The event is part of a 42-city tour celebrating California-based Fisker Automotive’s new North American retail network. A full tour schedule and images are available online in the News section of www.fiskerautomotive.com

The Fisker Karma is the world’s first premium plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). It combines world-class luxury and sports car-like performance with industry-leading economy and zero tailpipe emissions.

With 403hp it can reach 60mph in six seconds and a top speed of 125mph, yet it can achieve more than 100mpg on an annual basis. The Karma has a total range of 300 miles, 50 of which are electric-only and powered by a Lithium-ion battery from A123 Systems that can be fully recharged in as little as eight hours from any electrical outlet.

The four-seat sedan was designed by Fisker Automotive CEO Henrik Fisker, who also designed the Aston Martin DB9 and BMW Z8, both of which were featured in James Bond movies.

“In building our U.S. network we selected retailers with a successful track record handling established premium brands and delivering a premium customer experience,” said Mr. Fisker.

Warren Henry Automobiles has served South Florida for more than 34 years, and has consistently been a top performer in terms of sales and service. The group consists only of luxury brands, including Land Rover, Jaguar, Infiniti, Volvo, Fisker and Lamborghini.

Warren Henry Zinn, President of Warren Henry Automobiles, comments, “We’re very excited to bring the Fisker brand to Miami. The vehicle represents everything we appreciate in a car – style, performance and advanced technology. This is one car that truly is like no other, and it is a vehicle that people will need to drive to believe!”

Distinctive, stylish and green, the Karma is priced competitively within its segment and appeals to eco-friendly customers who don’t want to compromise their passion for driving.

Fisker Automotive created the premium plug-in hybrid segment when it introduced the Karma at the 2008 North American International Auto Show as a concept. Initial customer deliveries are expected to begin first quarter 2011. The Fisker Karma order bank already exceeds 1,600 vehicles.

In September 2009 Fisker Automotive was approved for a conditional Department of Energy loan of $528.7 million, which will go toward the development of a line of lower-priced plug-in hybrids as well as the purchase of a former GM assembly plant in Wilmington, Delaware. The company expects to create up to 5,000 direct and indirect U.S. jobs in the coming years.

Motivational Music Night for the Kids 5/14/10

“Motivational Music Night for the Kids” is going to be a very cool night of live music at the newly renovated Grand Beach Hotel at 4835 Collins Avenue. The event is a fund raiser for the The Motivational Edge’s summer music programs, of which Musical Missionary will hopefully play a part.

The Motivational Edge is one of Musical Missionary’s key partners. It is together with TME that Musical Missionary will be able to design and implement our own youth music programs as opposed to simply sponsoring kids in other programs. It will be a milestone for Musical Missionary to start its own youth music program, which can happen this summer with all of your support. With as little as $500, we can have our own summer class of 3 or 4 students learning how to play the keyboard and introduce them to the world of digital recording.

The more Musical Missionary supporters who come out to this event, the more money we will raise for our own youth music program this summer. Tickets are $35, which gets you dinner, 2 drinks and 4 hours of some of Miami’s best live music. There will also be cool items up for auction like hotel and cruise packages, sports memorabilia and a cash pot. A Porsche Boxster S will also be raffled off.

LISA SHAW – Her warm, sexy vocals have graced many a house music track, but Lisa Shaw’s name is still fairly obscure. She’s a “house diva” – owner of an anonymous voice that soars above crowded dancefloors at 2 a.m., enchanting listeners, only to disappear a few minutes later. Anyone who’s ever gone clubbing has probably heard her – probably more than once. Shaw is nearly ubiquitous in the house music scene. She’s collaborated with many famous producers, and has appeared on countless compilations. And finally, in 2001, she began to make tentative steps toward the spotlight.

In 2009, Lisa brings you her second album “Free” being released on Salted Music. “FREE” showcases Lisa’s illustrious voice through a well crafted journey of soulful vibes and bouncy gems, with producers Dave Warrin, Miguel Migs, and Tim K keeping it moving. New House-Classics “Feel” and “All Night High” are supported by chill-inducing down-tempovbeauties like “Better Days”, “Honey”, and new Dance-Floor stompers “Music In You” and “Like I Want To.”

Lisa Shaw has been a proven staple in the deep house world. She helped define an era with her releases on Naked Music, and continues to create timeless gems.”FREE” takes it back to the basics, while “sweet and simply” taking it beyond.

IVAN DIAZ – Local Miami secret has been hidden and flying under the radar for the last couple of years. This 25th Anniversary of WMC definitely brought out the “IVAN” in Ivan and showcased the best in a showman behind the controls of the deepest, dirties, most funky and afronic beats. Ivan is set to take over not only his little world but yours too…he’s a ‘don’t miss’, not to miss !!!!

The Wolfsonian–Fiu Presents Last Call The Rise And Fall Of Prohibition 5/21/10

The Wolfsonian–Fiu Presents Last Call The Rise And Fall Of Prohibition
Book Talk by Author and Former Public Editor of the New York Times, Daniel Okrent, Takes Place May 21

Join author and former public editor of The New York Times Daniel Okrent for a discussion of his latest book, Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition, an exploration of the virtues, failures, and politics of Prohibition, at The Wolfsonian–Florida International University on May 21, at 7pm.

Beginning with the liquor-soaked country that the U.S. was in the 19th century, Okrent explains three things: how Prohibition happened, what life under Prohibition was like, and what it did to the country—both during its reign and after. The book is overflowing with detailed portraits of the period’s notable personalities (including Sam Bronfman, H.L. Mencken, Pierre du Pont, and Billy Sunday, among many others) and stories from nearly every part of the country: smoky Manhattan speakeasies, Californian vineyards busily producing “sacramental” wine, Chicago warehouses piled with smuggled Canadian whiskey, New England coastal towns that harbored bootlegging fleets of powerful speed boats armed with machine guns, and the halls of Congress itself, where politicians who had voted for Prohibition drank openly and without apology.

Okrent’s years of research—through dozens of archives and hundreds of primary sources—equipped him to reveal the creativity and lengths Americans took to preserve their great pastime, from exploiting medicinal and religious loopholes in the law to learning how to make their own (occasionally poisonous and often unpalatable) alcoholic beverages. Few people know that Prohibition gave rise to our current use of mixers with liquor, the nature of our search and seizure laws, Caribbean tourism, the first national crime syndicates, and the prominence of Coca-Cola. Furthermore, Okrent illustrates how Prohibition intersected with innumerable other elements of American history, including World War I, the advent of the income tax, the growth of the Ku Klux Klan, the rights of women, and the question of individual privacy.
A starred review from Publishers Weekly calls this look at the years 1919-1933, during which the sale and consumption of alcohol was prohibited by a constitutional amendment, “assiduously researched, well-written, and continually eye-opening.”

The book talk takes place in the auditorium and is followed by a book signing in The Dynamo Museum Shop. The event is free for Wolfsonian members, members of the Florida International University community and students, and $10 for all others.

About Daniel Okrent
Daniel Okrent was the first public editor of The New York Times, editor-at-large of Time, Inc., and managing editor of Life magazine. He worked in book publishing as an editor at Knopf and Viking, and was editor-in-chief of general books at Harcourt Brace. In 2009, Okrent served as the Edward R. Murrow Visiting Lecturer at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard. The author of four previous books, he lives in Manhattan and on Cape Cod with his wife, poet Rebecca Okrent. They have two children.

The 2010 edition of EXXXOTICA will continue their tradition as they bring the top stars in XXX to the party capital of the world.

Highlights of the show will once again include the massive “Fantasy Island” attraction (sponsored by Genesis Magazine). Some of the legends already scheduled to appear include Lisa Ann, Seka, Raylene, Taylor Wane, Sean Michaels and Mr. Marcus, and many more of your favorite legends you have watched over the years will be appearing at this year’s show.

“It seems like yesterday that EXXXOTICA was just thought in our head and to see the way that it has grown over the past five years is amazing,” said J. Handy, Director of Victory Tradeshow Management. “South Beach has really embraced EXXXOTICA and we’re looking forward to many years to come.”

EXXXOTICA not only gives fans the opportunity to meet hundreds of stars, but they can browse the latest products and services from over 150 exhibitors including HotMovies.com, MyFreeCams.com, Clips4Sale.com, media sponsors XBIZ and XFANZ, popular men’s magazines Genesis and Club, and the World Erotic Art Museum.

The giant fan-friendly event also offers attendees the chance to “celebrate sexy” with dozens of interactive shows and events. The entertainment stage hosts a jam-packed schedule sure to grab the attention of every attendee, highlighted by the Ms. EXXXOTICA Competition, where local beauties vie for a $1,000 prize. Also, there is an educational seminar series designed to inform and tantalize attendees. Lastly, the show wouldn’t be complete without their trademark EXXXOTICA Hotties who will be putting on a show in every square foot of the massive space of the Convention Center.

Fans are also invited to party with their purchase of EXXXOTICA VIP pass in the super-sexy VIP Lounge, which will feature great music, the hottest girls and full service bars serving top shelf cocktails. Kill Your Idol
222 Espanola way
Miami Beach, Fl 33139
The MIA Program: A ten year retrospective of Miami as seen through the eyes of Miami local skate boarders/photographers Ian OʼConnor and Frankie Galland is back for a second viewing.
The MIA Program lures you in to the world of… well yes, skateboarding in Miami, but it also offers an honest portrayal of Miami’s style, culture, and some of the very colorful characters who call Miami home. (Aka the ‘Lurkers’ series)

Some of Ian’s photos have debuted on covers of the most respected skate mags in the world, while other have never been shared with the public until now. ‘The Program’ does not only focus on the physical act of skateboarding, but also documents what skaters encounter out in the streets of the magic city. From the gutters in Liberty City, to breathtaking aerial views of Biscayne Bay, Ian takes you on a visual journey through one of the United States most vibrant and fascinating cities, all the while capturing some of the finest skate boarders in the world.

You may know Frankie Galland from MIA Skateshop where he pretends to own the place! In the past and present though he’s been known as a man behind the lens shooting for Strength Magazine as photo editor, as well as many other publications from Swindle to Skateboarder. He spends his free time dancing like Ian Curtis and enjoying Johnny on the rocks.

Artist Taylor Kienholz was born and raised in a small skateboard staple town, Santa Cruz ca. he has been a part of the skateboard family for over 10 years, hes lived in many united state cities making friends in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, and has found his home base with his wife and daughter in Miami beach fl. his artwork has a bold yet rustic feel to it with destressed woods and aged hand tools. his content ranges from playful cartoon birds and Mexican folk art to refined stained wood work, and art installations. he currently works for Urban Outfitters on Miami beach and designs and builds all their display installations. visit taylorkienholz.blogspot.com to see more of his work.

City Of Miami Beach Is Proud To Support Miami Beach Gay Pride Festival As An Event Sponsor 4/17/10

CITY OF MIAMI BEACH IS PROUD TO SUPPORT MIAMI BEACH GAY PRIDE FESTIVAL AS AN EVENT SPONSOR
25/7 Street Team to March in Parade; Expo Booth to Hold Drawing

Miami Beach is Proud. So proud, in fact, that the city needs an extra hour each day to tell its LGBT residents and visitors that it’s one of the most accepting and diverse cities in the world. That’s the message behind “Miami Beach Proud 25/7,” the theme of the city’s sponsorship of the Second Annual Miami Beach Gay Pride, Saturday, April 17, 2010.
“Miami Beach has a long and strong history of acceptance and progressive attitudes toward the LGBT community,” said City Manager Jorge M. Gonzalez. “In addition to being a top destination for LGBT travelers, we have a proud history of supporting our LGBT residents and businesses, including a domestic partnership registry, a Gay Business Development Committee, and one of the strongest human rights ordinances on record of any city.”
For the Miami Beach Gay Pride Parade, which kicks off at noon on Ocean Drive from 5th to 15th Streets, Gonzalez said the city will participate by fielding a street team, led by legendary drag diva Miss Elaine Lancaster, and complete with a large banner and body-painted marchers harnessed to giant “Miami Beach Proud 25/7” balloons. Members of the street team will also interact with spectators along the parade route and distribute 25/7 Proud fans, temporary tattoos and sunscreen samples, all designed to remind residents and visitors that there’s so much shopping, dining, staying, playing and discovering in Miami Beach they need an extra hour.
Following the parade, and until 6 p.m., the City of Miami Beach will have a major presence at the Gay Pride Expo on the sands of Lummus Park between 10th and 14th Streets. In addition to temporary tattoos, fans and sunscreen samples for visitors to the city’s Proud 25/7 booth, Pride-goers can register for a grand prize drawing for two round-trip airfares, courtesy of the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau, and two VIP tickets to New York Pride’s Dance on the Pier, Sunday, June 27, courtesy of the City of Miami Beach.
Finally, for those who want to share their favorite “Proud 25/7 moment” – or any Miami Beach 25/7 moment for that matter – the City is hosting a Facebook photo contest where the winner will receive a two-night stay and spa treatments from the Shore Club. To enter the photo contest, log onto www.miamibeach25-7.com, click on the Facebook link at the bottom of the page, and upload a photo to the Miami Beach 25/7 fan page.
To develop the Proud 25/7 campaign, the City of Miami Beach again partnered with Cre8tiv Juice Group to develop branding strategy, and The Treister Murry Agency for public relations and social marketing. Both firms are based in Miami Beach.

IamYourVillain and Hometeam-Music presents a screening of Suite for Ma Dukes at The Standard Spa Miami Beach 4/14/10

IAmYourVillain, with Hometeam-Music, presents a screening of “Suite for Ma Dukes” produced by Mochilla in honor of the release of the Timeless Concert Series 3 DVD box set release.
“Timeless: The Composer/Arranger Series” is the name of a concert series that was created in homage to the composer/arrangers who have influenced hip-hop in the most literal and profound ways. Timeless was conceived by production house Mochilla in Los Angeles during February and March 2009 and included the performances of over 150 musicians in front of ecstatic sold out crowds. These three historic events were recorded and filmed in exacting detail with Mochilla’s unmistakable style.
“Suite for Ma Dukes” is the second DVD of the series celebrating the music of producer, J Dilla. Composed and arranged for a 60 piece Orchestra by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson feat. special guests Bilal, Dwele, Posdnuos, Talib Kweli and more. This premiere performance is still on the minds of many. Mixed and mastered by legendary Grammy award winning producer/mixer, Bob Power. The man behind hundreds of pop and jazz recordings for such artists as Erykah Badu, D’Angelo, De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest and more, he had also worked with Dilla while he was alive. Hip hop has never sounded or looked like this, welcome to a new era, a new scale and a new sound. Part of the proceeds of all Suite for Ma Dukes performances and recordings will go towards Maureen “Ma Dukes” Yancey and the heirs to the Dilla Estate.
The screening takes place on Wednesday, April 14th, 2010 at The Standard Spa Miami Beach (located at 40 Island Avenue, Miami Beach, FL 33139) starting at 9:00PM.

Registration begins at 8pm SHARP and the event will begin at 9pm. If you are still in line and not registered by 9pm, you will be unable to compete, but you may participate. As a result, latecomers will be unable to compete for the winnings. The bottom line is: please arrive on time!
Here’s how it works:
The wine for this tasting is Merlot. The Merlot grape is a close cousin to Cabernet Sauvignon in many respects. It is lower in tannins and makes wines that mature faster and are softer in texture. Merlot is often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon in order to soften the blend. At its best, Merlot makes a wine that is dry, rich in flavor and smooth as it finishes in your throat. At its worst, Merlot makes wine that is dry but thin in taste and texture, and not very pleasant to consume. Most of what you will come across are likely to be of pretty good quality.
Each team of 2-3, must bring 3 bottles of the EXACT SAME MERLOT. For example, a team may bring 3 bottles of Maori Point Merlot 2006. Remember, it’s 3 bottles total per team and teams can consist of 2 to 3 people.
If you are alone and need to be part of a team to participate, let us know in your RSVP, and we will try to pair you up with someone else.
Also, please remember to think of a team name before arriving!
Food will NOT be served other than cheese and bread. Eat before arriving, or you may pay for it.
We NEED volunteers! If you are inclined, please donate your time to help in a great cause. We will need people to host, clean, prepare the wine for tasting and take score. If you would like to help, please let us know. Volunteers will be exclusively treated to a post-event celebration. TBA.
Upon arrival, the teams will first register. Subsequently, all 3 bottles will be given to the volunteers, who wrap two bottles to conceal the wine’s label. The wrapped bottles will have a number randomly assigned to them and will then be set out for tasting. The third bottle will be left unopened and will not be tasted or displayed.

WE WILL RAFFLE OFF A TWO-NIGHT STAY AT THE RIVIERA HOTEL SOUTH BEACH FOR THOSE WHO BECOME 1 IN 1,000 AND EXISTING 1 IN 1,000 MEMBERS. Raffle courtesy of the South Beach Group and Riviera Hotel management.

We look forward to seeing you and please arrive on time or you will miss the competition!

Ballet Flamenco La Rosa Artistic Director Ilisa Rosal, and company singer/guitarist Paco Fonta, will present a lecture/demonstration on the Jewish Roots of Flamenco, as one of many offerings of the Guava Rugelach Festival at Temple Israel of Greater Miami.

A brief history of the development of the art of Flamenco and the influences that Jewish music and the Jewish experience in Spain had on the art form will be discussed, with examples of the music and vocals to illustrate.

PACO FONTA * SINGER AND GUITARIST
Paco Fonta met Ballet Flamenco Director Ilisa Rosal in Madrid in the early 1980’s when they worked together at tablaos and festivals for several years.

When Ms. Rosal founded Ballet Flamenco La Rosa in 1985, Paco Fonta was under contract to a local flamenco club, and he joined the company. They have worked together ever since on the many interesting projects the company has produced and created a great following for the high quality and pure excitement and beauty of their work.

It’s Happening at CANDO Arts Co-op 4/11/10

It’s HAPPENING
April 11th from 4:30 – 6:30 pm
A FREE dance presentation inspired by the space and work of the
CANDO Arts Co-op
309 23rd Street
Miami Beach, FL
One block west of Collins Ave.
It’s Happening… is a collage of experiences and interpretations, reflecting on the work of Miami artists: Deborah Weed, Dena & Stewart Stewart, Lucinda Linderman, Paula Turk, AnneFaye Poole, and James Broderick. 7 young international and local choreographers, all students and alumni of the New World School of the Arts dance program, come together to create a physical second look at art. They explore the textures, perceptions of, and reactions to the ideas and images presented at the CANDO Arts Co-op. It is never enough to look at a picture or space without putting some thought into how it makes you react. Within each illustration or sculpture there is an energy, a history, and a reason. Whether we choose to acknowledge it or not, there is a lot more happening right before our eyes than we realize. And this is what we search for and try to translate for ourselves, that which is happening when we look at the world through the eyes and hands of another human being. In this intimate setting, the audience will experience the world created by the gallery’s work alongside the performers themselves. Both performer and patron will be challenged to react and adapt to what has been and is being created. Visual art, dance, literature, and music will all lend a hand in creating this experience, stimulating questions and conversations that will hopefully prompt new perspectives on how art can affect the response of individuals and communities.

Choreographers:
Andrea Ollarvide, Kristen Carcone, Liony Garcia, Sarah Matry-Guerre, Kristin Whiting, Kaitlyn Bishop, and Matthew Bailey

Special thanks to The Dade Community Foundation, Collins Park Neighborhood Association, MiamiArtZine .com, as well as Miami Dance Futures without whom this performance would not be possible. For more information call 786-366-9826.

We’ve been away from home long enough– and to celebrate our return to the United States, we’re going to try and see as much of it as we can, as quickly as we can!
We’ll be touring the U.S. for the entire month of June, from New York to California and (almost) everywhere in between. And even better, our pals in Tokyo Police Club will be on board for most dates.

Redemption. Paranoia. Guilt. And brief glimpses of a better tomorrow, all cloaked in pop hooks that truly help the medicine go down.

What is this? Another lost LP from Brian Wilson’s sandbox phase? If only things were that simple. What we’re really alluding to here is Passion Pit’s first proper full-length, Manners, a bird-flipping break from the blogosphere by a 21 year old with much more on his manic mind than girls, girls, girls. You know, important matters, like the end of the world and learning to love someone other than the man in the mirror.

That’s the thing people missed about Passion Pit’s debut EP, Chunk of Change. While it was originally meant as a Valentine’s Day gift for a girlfriend who “put up with” frontman Michael Angelakos, that detail’s only half of a story that isn’t so cuddly when you consider the circumstances.

Let’s Talk Shop About Blogs 4/16/10

Ted Rubin of Open Sky will be in town and wants to meet bloggers. Ted is the ex-CMO of e.l.f. Cosmetics / EyesLipsFace.com, where he built a vast network of bloggers and worked with a very large Facebook and Twitter following.

I saw a presentation about Open Sky and think a good number of bloggers in Miami might be interested in this, especially family, food & lifestyle bloggers who’ve got a solid presence.

No formal preso here … let’s just get together and talk shop about our blogs and monetizing strategies … if you’re into that. First cupla drinks on Ted’s tab!

Note: I am not at all affiliated with Open Sky — I just wanted to share a potentially good resource with fellow bloggers and besides, it’s been a while since we all got together and networked.
