Jeremy Waks creates naturally-lush childhood sanctuary to play backdrop to one’s midnight escapades
TREEHOUSE, a new Miami Beach nightclub, will celebrate its debut with a grand opening reception on Friday, January 28, 2011, 10 PM to midnight, featuring complimentary cocktails and music by DJ Troy Kurtz and Canadian DJ duo Ess & Emm. The warm and welcoming indoor/outdoor space will be an adult playground-of-sorts designed and owned by nightlife purveyor Jeremy Waks. Positioned at 323 23rd Street in South Beach, TREEHOUSE is smartly located among a bevy of hotels and clubs nearby such as The W, Gansevoort Miami Beach, and the Setai Hotel.
The 8,000-square-foot venue boasts three different rooms, each laying ground to a new environment. Upon entering TREEHOUSE, guests will find themselves in a small, intimate boîte that evokes the warmth of a ski-lodge. Lounge seating is accented by ribbons of raw teak wood lining the walls, along with a black button-laced bar draped in cargo netting that anchors the space. The main room lies just beyond, and its wood-laced walls are complimented by stadium-style black leather banquet seating, along with inventive lighting and sound for a high-energy atmosphere. The cool outdoor area serves as the nightclub’s third room, where guests can lounge amidst plush greenery and enjoy views of night sky in a candlelit Wynwood Art District-inspired setting.
TREEHOUSE is the newest venture by 26-year old Waks, the entrepreneur that previously launched Miami Beach-based Heathrow Lounge. “I always had a clear vision of a space that would evoke all the childhood charm of a tree house, but filtered through a mature taste-level, while presenting the gritty undertones of Miami’s art enclaves,†says Waks. “TREEHOUSE is a sophisticated version of a fantastical getaway and serves as a local hideout to those looking for nightlife with a downtown sensibility in South Beach.â€
Waks seeks to provide an ideal nightlife destination for savvy club-goers via TREEHOUSE’s focus on specialty drinks and its lineup of high-caliber entertainment and productions. He will layer the club’s content and formatting with a variety of cultural heavy-hitters, in addition to a music lineup from Miami-cult icon the Overthrow, which will range from open-format, to nu-wave dance and electro. “TREEHOUSE is anchored to a large mesh of Miami’s art and nightlife roots; essentially, this is locals building a TREEHOUSE, for locals,†says Waks with conviction.

Under a full moon and amid many stars, more than 400 of Miami’s most elite gathered to celebrate the grand opening of Boulan South Beach, the newest condominium to grace the shores of South Florida. This Christmas help bring a smile to South Florida’s disadvantaged children at the Annual Toys for Tots Toy Drive benefiting Miami Children’s Hospital. This year’s event will take place at the renowned and luxurious Temple House on Friday, December 10, 2010 at 1415 Euclid Avenue in Miami Beach; followed immediately by the official after party at Bar 721, an upscale lounge on 721Lincoln Lane North.
The primary goal of this private reception is to make sure no child get’s left behind this Christmas. Special guests will donate an unwrapped toy and enjoy a night of upscale elegance while bringing joy to a child this Christmas. With last year’s event generating over 500 toys for local children, attendees can be assured that each donation will go directly into the hands of a needy child. The official after party will be held at Bar 721, South Beach’s premier lounge.
Hosting the Toy Drive will be some of South Florida’s most notable personalities including: Omar Gonzalez, Vice Mayor Michael Gongora, Louis Aguirre, Dan Sehres, Cynthia Acosta, Chrissy Morales, Christopher Ciccone, Craig Stevens, Dr. Julio Galo, Jochy Ortiz, Edison Farrow, Tony Ferro, Lauren Martin, and Janet Jorgulesco.
The U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program (www.toysfortots.org) aims to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community. Over its 18 year life span, the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation has supplemented local toy collections with more than 81.3 million toys valued at more than $487 million.

For over two decades, Liberty Group has distinguished itself from all others primarily through its distinct design approach, and continues to increase public awareness of important heritage through the dramatic transformation of original historical sites into brilliant settings for the hospitality industry. Historical prolific examples include; Rosewater, situated in the original Consumers Gas building (Toronto) constructed in1873; Courthouse, in Toronto’s original courthouse building constructed in 1852; and Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex, Toronto’s most prestigious event facility, originally the home of the Ontario Government, built in 1926.
The Coral Gables Country Club which has been restored and dramatically transformed by the Toronto-based Liberty Entertainment Group has enlisted Reed V. Horth from ROBIN RILE FINE ART to curate the Private Launch Party and a four-day art exhibit to celebrate Art Basel week in Miami, December 2 – 5, 2010. The exhibit consists of selected original sculpture, photography, drawings and print works from Spanish Master Salvador Dali, American Masters Frederick E. Hart and Richard MacDonald and Hungarian Master Martón Váró, as well as several other emergent artists.
The public art exhibit re-introduced the community to the Coral Gables Country Club, which was once a member’s only facility. This event opened the doors of the Country Club to the public and established it as a viable and active participant within the community of Coral Gables.
A portion of the proceeds will benefit the University of Miami’s Lowe Art Museum. Throughout the event, speakers from the University of Miami will highlight aspects of the master Salvador Dali’s impact on 20th-21st Century thought, and other topics of interest to our guests.
This event brought together scholarship, philanthropy and connoisseurship all under one roof and kicked-off the Art Basel Week in sophistication and elegance.

Following the release of two highly acclaimed albums with her band, The Licks, Juliette Lewis released her debut solo album Terra Incognita last fall. Lewis wrote most of the 11 tracks with long time friend and musician Chris Watson and recorded the album in between both of her and Omar’s tours at the end of 2008. There’s a new night life venue on the Miami scene, and it made quite an impression on this young woman.
Enter the venue from a downtown Miami street where a bouncer shows you through a small lobby and to a large stairway leading up and into the night’s adventure. Scope the room and note Ecco Lounge is small, though not cramped and feels quite comfortable. The drinks are strong and almost cheap by this sobe girl’s standards. The bartenders and other staff do their job competently and with a smile. On the night of my visit, the music was outstanding so props to the events staff for booking awesome electronic music talents Kate Simko and local Sebastian Cariaga.
The set up of the room lends itself to drinking, dancing and relaxing. The DJ booth is slightly raised and in front of a window facing the dance area and bar behind it. To one side are couches if you prefer to relax and on the other is what I like to call the Washroom VIP. Yes, technically it is just a bathroom, but it’s freakin great! Lovely decor, quite clean, ample stalls, sinks, and supplies, and an adorable seating area. Guys, don’t get suspicious about your girl’s party habits if she lingers too long in the ladies’ room. She’s probably just chatting up her friends in a quiet environment.
My only disappointment is that smoking is allowed inside, but such is the status quo in Florida so my gripe would probably be more useful were it correctly directed to our fair state’s public health department, but I digress.
I hope Ecco Lounge continues to book DJs and plan unique events, because it is quite possibly perfect for my current after dark desires. Volume, lighting, staff, drinks, and even temperature were all on point. Now when was the last time you could say that about a night life venue?

Today, SMIRNOFF announces that on November 27, 2010, Miami will receive the best of London’s nightlife culture as part of The Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange Project – a one-of-a-kind global experience in which 14 countries pair up to exchange crates containing the best of each country’s nightlife. Continuing on a mission to inspire and enable unique experiences, the Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange Project has uncovered the best of global nightlife, and will now celebrate the outcome when two very different cultures collide to create something extraordinary. On my usual roundabouts of events, I decided to concentrate this time in Miami Beach. First on my list was the launch of Money Clip Direct South Beach at Chez Badeaux salon on Alton Road. Money Clip Direct is a beautifully designed coupon book that is delivered to homes all throughout South Florida, filled with exclusive offers designed to save all of us money. Chez Badeaux was honored to open its doors to its neighbors and surrounding businesses as there was music and great food provided by King Kone. It gave all visitors the opportunity to have a glimpse of this wonderful salon and the services it provides.
Next on my agenda, I headed to D. Rodriguez Cuba at Hotel Astor on Washington Avenue for the Voices Against Brain Cancer Kick Off Celebration. Mano Lichtenstein, founder of VABC and Chef Douglas Rodriguez hosted this celebration alongside some of VABC Ambassadors. VABC toasted the launch of the Florida Chapter featuring the sounds of Conjunto Progreso. This event was also in celebration of the upcoming Sounding Off For a Cure concert to be held on February 11, 2011. The cocktail reception which included many Miami and Miami Beach socialites started with delectable cocktails and passed appetizers that only D. Rodriguez Cuba is known for. Later on, the restaurant area turned into one big dance floor as the guests moved to the rhythms of Conjunto Progreso and Voice Against Brain Cancer thanked the invited guest for a wonderful evening supporting a great cause.
After I left the great fundraiser, I went to the Grand Opening of Coltorti on Lincoln Road. The store celebrated their storied 75 year history in Italy by welcoming invited guest to their new store in Miami. When I entered the store, I was amazed of all the good fashion that it had. Their motto is to bring the Coltori way re-interpreted into Miami chic. According to Marzio Torcianti, Coltorti Managing Director, “The Miami woman is certainly carving out her own place in fashion…much in the same way you look at a New Yorker or Parisian.” Coltorti will become a great resource to the Miami woman who wants to dress Miami Chic. With exclusive arrangements for pieces from coveted design house such as Moncler and Viannet, Coltorti will definitely be one store that you don’t want to miss.
My last stop was a surprise, as I have heard through the grapevine that there was a hotel opening, so I wandered to downtown Miami and low and behold, I discovered that it was the JW Marriott Marquis Grand Opening. Unfortunately, when I arrived, most of the guests were already leaving but the action was still going inside. So I took the elevator to the 19th Floor and to my surprise, the party was still going. In one of the beautifully decorated ballrooms there was a basketball court where guests in their tuxedos and dresses where still playing up some hoops. In another room, rich desserts and expresso were being served. As I passed the pool table in that area, I encountered a virtual bowling alley where guests were hitting a strike one after another. In another adjacent room, other guests were enjoying a good round of virtual golf. The hotel and its amenities were amazing. It was a great night even though the great stars were gone but it gave me an appreciation of the hotel after all the commotion was gone.
All in all it was a great night and after that I headed back home where a warm bed was welcoming me and looking forward to another great night out in the town!

Twenty Years ago this November, CocoWalk opened to the public for the very first time. Originally developed by Constructa US, Inc & Steiner & Associates, Inc. CocoWalk has passed through 3 owners and seen many changes. When CocoWalk opened in November, 1990, AMC Cocowalk 16 Theaters was the center’s first and only anchor. Phase II of the center was completed in 1994, adding eight more screens and totaling the cinema’s composition to sixteen. In 2002, Phase III was completed, a four story office building. The entire first and most of the second floor allowed for the expansion of Gap.
In 2007, CocoWalk was purchased by PMAT, the current owner of the property. PMAT invested over $10 Million in renovations and upgrades and celebrated with a Grand Reopening in April 2007. Recently, the movie theater has undergone renovations, and reopened as Paragon Grove 13, on June 4, 2010, the first all hi-def luxery theater in South Florida. Other recent additions include Chili’s, Crazy Pianos, Bobby Chan and RodezArt.com Gallery. Opening soon are Central Beer Garden, Sushi Central and CocoWok.

During the band’s 13 year career they independently released three recordings: ‘Water and Walls’ (with then guitar player Michael Lashinsky), the acoustic ‘The Subtleties of Anger’ and their full-length release ‘Stones for Steven.’ Their last effort ‘wake ‘ was recorded but never released due to their disbandment. The band, who opened for headlining acts such as Stone Temple Pilots, Candlebox and Gin Blossoms and shared the stage with other local favorites like Marilyn Mason, The Mavericks and Nuclear Valdez were a top draw in Miami and popular throughout Florida, as well as toured the East coast.

Waterfront restaurant & gay-friendly nightclub celebrates unveiling with private reception

The Bay, a new North Beach restaurant and gay-friendly nightclub, will celebrate its debut with a private cocktail reception on Friday, October 22, 2010, 8 PM to 11 PM, along with event sponsor Florida Equality and featuring music by DJ Troy Kurtz. The indoor/outdoor space by industry veterans Patrick Reilly and George Figares is nestled against the waters of Biscayne Bay at 1601 J.F.K. Causeway in Miami Beach.
The 26,000-square-foot venue boasts a grandiose red-brick entranceway leading up to double-doors rescued from a vintage train car, a gunmetal-polished concrete floor interior, a wine room equipped to house over 1,000 bottles, four bars, an expansive waterfront terrace, and a state-of-the-art kitchen under the helm of 2010 Miami-breakout chef Guily Booth. The Bay will splash a new twist on the Causeway social scene by providing a friendly neighborhood ambiance that caters to the most cost-conscious clientele and offers unique fare and hand-crafted cocktails.
Executive Chef Guily Booth classifies The Bay’s fare as “Americana with a twist.†Her signature jumbo lump crab meat dish takes on a new spin, now served on a bed of arugula, tomato and fried capers. Additional offerings include: Pulled Pork Sliders ($7); Bacon-Wrapped Stuffed Dates ($8) served with manchego cheese and a hint of Indian spices; and the New England Lobster Roll ($18), Maine lobster meat poached in butter and served on a grilled hot dog bun.
Co-owner Patrick Reilly (formerly of Paragon, now known as Mansion) seeks to bring excitement to the causeway middle-ground between Biscayne Boulevard and Collins Avenue. The Bay’s eclectic weekly lineup includes: Monday – College Night; Tuesday – 2-4-1 Drinks & Dinner; Wednesday – Studio Filthy Whore; Thursday – Latin Night; Friday – Pop Rocks; Saturday – House Night; and Sunday – Tea-Dance Party. Go-Go boys, drag hosts and Twister contests can also be expected. Reilly says “We are not trying to reinvent the Miami Beach club scene wheel; we are merely taking the best elements of the wheel and bringing them back.â€
As a staple DJ figure of eight years in Miami’s gay-club circuit (Score; Twist), co-owner George Figares will use his ear for blending beats to book leading DJs of all orientations. National and local notables directing The Bay’s musical score include Eddie Baez, Smeejay and Bryan Zero. Figares says “We want to bring something fresh to South Florida’s gay community by taking the most attractive elements of Miami’s nightlife and setting them in a comfortable and engaging environment.

The Intercontinental Hotel is 25 years young. Therfore a worthwhile celebration took place. The party was going to be held at the pool terrace of the hotel. However, due to the dubious weather, the celebration was held inside on the second floor in one of their beautiful grand ballrooms. It was a perfect setting for the event.
Renowned artist Stephen Gamson whose artwork can be seen hanging on the side of the hotel, created a one of a kind masterpiece to honor this milestone celebration. The artist himself was available to sign commemorative posters of his artwork.
The cocktails and appetizers from the Intercontinental were amazing. At the end, a one of a kind dessert was passed around. This dessert consisted of whip cream with a delicious berry surprise at the bottom; blueberries. It was the perfect sweet way to end a good feast.

A gloomy homage to F. Scott Fitzgerald’s literary classic, The Great Gatsby, this event is the fourth annual era-themed happening presented by SuperMarket Creative’s Michelle Leshem and Ocean Drive Editor at Large Jose Ortiz. Upon entering the hotel’s lobby, guests will experience a darker side of Jay Gatsby’s Roaring 20s, posing for pictures alongside an experiential vignette (photographed by Stian Roenning) that shines a brooding light on the opulent mansion. The Ballroom will feature live performances by Toronto-based synth-pop group Parallels, who will make their Miami debut alongside Panic Bomber. Tommy Gunn and Smeejay will also be in The Ballroom laying down their signature cult classic beats. DJs of-the-moment Ess & Emm, Troy Kurtz and Mister Drake will provide musical direction in The Penthouse, accompanied by video art curated by Spinello Projects. Patrons will enjoy complimentary Heineken / Heineken Light lagers from 9 PM to 10 PM, which will later be available for a cost of $5.00. Stash Wardrobe Rental (featured in Sex & The City) is the official costume retailer for “Gatsby Gone Goth†and offers guests haute prohibition-era looks, though all costume types are welcome.
