Spend an evening with Esdras “Photo Tea” Thelusma on Friday, February 23 as part of The Art Of Hip Hop’s Black History Month programming. Thelusma, a Miami-based photographer, filmmaker, and painter, has skillfully captured a diverse array of subjects, ranging from Hip Hop legends and emerging icons to everyday Miami residents. Rather than producing a contrived image, he adeptly captures the innate magnetism of each subject.

Thelusma’s portfolio includes collaborations with the newest class of Hip Hop stars like City Girls and Sexxy Red, as well as established cultural icons like Gucci Mane and Wiz Khalifa. His unique approach seamlessly blends editorial flair with documentary aesthetics, marking him as a tastemaker in the ever-evolving cultural landscape.

On display at the Art of Hip Hop, Thelusma’s works reveal his talent for juxtaposing humility with symbols of opulence, or vice versa, resulting in an elegant body of work that navigates concepts of stardom, class consciousness, and the importance of honoring one’s past. During the event, Thelusma will address topics such as capturing a subject’s charisma or stoicism along with exploring their roots and potential.

This event is not just a showcase of Thelusma’s incredible work but also a forum for reflecting on what it means to be a part of the ever-changing landscape of Hip Hop culture. The Art of Hip Hop looks forward to welcoming guests for an evening of art, conversation, and exploration.

Shops at Merrick Park, known for its pristine outdoor shopping with lush green spaces and a fine collection of retailers in the heart of Coral Gables, will once again host the world-famous Los Trompos art exhibition created by Mexican designers Héctor Esrawe and Ignacio Cadena. This interactive vibrant outdoor display will make its return to South Florida, captivating audiences from February 13 through March 21 for one month only.

“Los Trompos,” which means “spinning tops” in Spanish, is a traveling exhibit that has been displayed in cities around the world, including Mexico City, Paris, and New York. The lively installation will feature eight larger-than-life, three-dimensional colorful spinning tops in a variety of colors and shapes that invite visitors to play and engage with the art. The art draws its inspiration from a toy that has been popular with children around the world since the dawn of time.

The colorful surfaces of each top are created, in part, by fabric woven in a traditional Mexican style. The fabric is stretched over the modules to seat several people at once. Functioning as both artwork and a rotating platform, each sculpture acts as a gathering place for relaxation, social interaction and entertainment.

This large-scale, artistic installation engages visitors in a way that is both meaningful and playful. By working together to create momentum, visitors can spin the tops on their bases.

Los Trompos was first commissioned by High Museum of Arts, Atlanta. Owners of Los Trompos are DTE Energy Beacon Park Foundation and The Downtown Detroit Partnership. The tour producer is Creos.

Los Trompos at Shops at Merrick Park is free to attend (no ticket required). Visitors are encouraged to take the tops for a spin, sit back and relax, or pose for the perfect photo opportunity. The exhibit is suitable for all ages.

Fort Lauderdale, Florida, 33312

Ode to Joy! In a milestone musical event, South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO), led by Sebrina María Alfonso, will pay passionate homage to Beethoven, one of classical music’s most revered composers, with a 200th anniversary celebration of his monumental choral masterpiece, Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125! One hundred voices from South Florida Symphony Chorus, directed by Dr. Giselle Elgarresta Rios, featuring talented singers from Barry University, Our Lady of Lourdes Academy, the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida, and the community, will add to the revelry. Soloists Elizabeth Caballero (soprano), Rebecca Ringle Kamarei (mezzo-soprano), Adam Diegel (tenor), and Luis Ledesma (baritone) will also perform a selection of grand opera arias. The performance takes place at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 3, at Broward Center for the Performing Arts (BCPA) in Fort Lauderdale. A pre-concert chat illuminating the works and composers will take place 30 minutes prior to the concert with Dr. Alan Mason.

Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 premiered in 1824, Vienna, to an enthusiastic audience. During its composition, Beethoven was steadily losing his hearing and by the time of its premiere, he was profoundly deaf. He never heard a note outside his own imagination. Various accounts maintain that he had to be directed to face the audience during the performance to see its appreciation.

Complementing these milestone performances will be a selection of moving operatic arias from Bizet’s Carmen, Verdi’s Rigoletto, Puccini’s Turandot and Tosca, and Delibes’ Lakmé.

Following its highly acclaimed 25th anniversary season, including sold-out shows and a celebrated performance accompanying award-winning alt-rock indie vocalist Natalie Merchant, South Florida’s largest symphonic orchestra is continuing its musical journey of excellence inspiring audiences of all ages.

Upcoming concerts include masterworks from Bernstein, Schubert, Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky and more, including another SFSO premiere, Ellen Taaffe Zwilich’s Clarinet Concerto. Additional popular music performances including Maestra Alfonso conducting SFSO in a live performance of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone ™ In Concert on April 5 and 6 and Classical Mystery Tour: A Symphonic Tribute to The Beatles on May 11, both at Broward Center for the Performing Arts (separately ticketed events).

Single tickets for this program begin at $25 in Fort Lauderdale and flexible ticket packages are on sale now.

Miami, Florida, 33167

Cost: Free

Named after a type of African woven-wood basket, Ukhamba is a ten-foot-tall circular structure with four arched entrances, built of curved wooden elements stacked in horizontal layers. Its construction invites visitors to walk inside and congregate but allows the surrounding plaza and urban landscape to remain visible through the structure. Inspired by Barnes’s time working abroad in South Africa, as well as in Miami, Ukhamba not only responds to Miami’s sub-tropical climate but also unites architectural elements typical of diasporic communities of African and Caribbean origin. It comprises a pavilion that appears part basket, part traditional breeze wall.

Ukhamba is a space for reflection on our relationship to the built environment, urban design, its histories, and cultural memories. Barnes’s pavilion continues the artists’ exploration of themes of spatial identity, migration, the cultural influences of the African diaspora, and its contributions to classical architecture. Primarily using materials found in South Florida, the artist has focused on sustainability and has designed a structure in dialogue with the history and natural environment that surrounds it.

This eco activity and service camp will put students on action-packed, eye-opening field trips, offer interactive lessons, connect them with inspiring speakers, and take them snorkeling to a Coral Reef Restoration project, to name a few.

At CauseCamp, students can expect to kayak during a Mangrove cleanup and take part in an Everglades slog, which will allow them to explore the off-trail areas of the park and learn about its ecosystem. They’ll even have a floating classroom on Biscayne Bay to help students understand the worth of water and the urgent need to protect it. “Exposing our youth to sustainability projects empowers them to be knowledgeable, responsible, and active citizens of our community. We want to inspire our youth to find their drop and take action for a water-secure future” said Leslie Ramos, Chief Experience Officer at Blue Missions Group.

Offering four days of field trips and one day of carnival fun, CauseCamp promises to have a good mix of activities that students can enjoy while immersing themselves in nature, exploring new places, and making new friends.

FLITE Center West Palm Beach will launch its inaugural FLITE Center Gunther Motor Company Collective Impact Awards presented by South Florida Business and Wealth (SFBW) honoring Palm Beach County youth advocates at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 27, at The Studio at The Ben Autograph Collection Hotel (251 N. Narcissus in West Palm Beach). Special guest host CBS 12 Anchor Liz Quirantes will emcee the event that will recognize individuals and companies for their advocacy and support of FLITE Center’s mission to aid vulnerable youth in South Florida’s Transitional Independent Living (TIL) System of Care.

Honorees include The Frederick A. FLITE Center has been serving the West Palm Beach community since 2021. In 2022, it expanded its services by adding a 1,500-square-foot drop-in center located in the historic northwest sector of downtown – in an area youth can easily reach. This past February, new property space began providing a safe, secure and reliable immediate housing emergency landing space lovingly called Falcon Ridge for human trafficking survivor youth and their families.

FLITE Center offers comprehensive and seamless service delivery for youth and young adults
ages 10 to 25 involved in the child welfare system, including youth with special and behavioral
needs, survivors of human trafficking, youth from the Department of Juvenile Justice, youth
who have no high school diploma, those who are unemployed, homeless, or facing any other
unfortunate circumstance. It ensures that youth develop essential skills and competencies in daily living, decision-making and interpersonal communication; crucial modules to begin building their lives as productive members of the community. To achieve these goals, FLITE Center partners with nonprofit organizations, government agencies, corporations, and private citizens. Last year, FLITE Center served nearly 2,000 young adults in the Transitional Independent Living (TIL) System of Care.

Orchestra Miami to Perform Carnival of the Animals at Zoo Miami 2/25/24

Orchestra Miami to Perform Carnival of the Animals at Zoo Miami
Sunday, 02/25/2024-, 11:00 am-02:00 pm
Zoo Miami
12400 SW 152 Street,
Miami, Florida, 33177
Website
Cost: Free with zoo admission

A celebration that’s 40+ years in the making takes flight at Zoo Miami on Sunday, February 25 with Orchestra Miami’s performance of Camille Saint-Saëns’s 1886 suite, Le Carnaval des Animaux (Carnival of Animals). For Elaine Rinaldi, Orchestra Miami’s artistic director, this performance is deeply personal.

In 1982, at the age of 14, Elaine Rinaldi made her soloist debut as a pianist with the Ft. Lauderdale Chamber Orchestra performing Carnival of Animals at what was then the newly opened Miami Metro Zoo. Even at that young age, Elaine knew that she wanted to recreate that event and allow other promising young artists to perform locally with a professional orchestra. Forty-two years later, her dream becomes a reality. “This concert is a full circle moment for me, and it’s perfect for Orchestra Miami’s ‘Discover Miami Through Music’ series, which I started in 2014. You can’t perform this suite without duo pianists, so I’m especially pleased to be giving two young piano soloists the rare opportunity to perform with a professional orchestra,” said Rinaldi.

Orchestra Miami will offer two performances of the humorous musical suite of fourteen movements, each representing an animal. They are honored to have Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava narrating the 11 AM performance while Conservationist, Ron Magill, will narrate the 1 PM performance. Maestro Rinaldi will be conducting the performances, and the piano soloists are Elisabeth Thomashoff originally from Vienna, Austria, and Aneliya Novikova originally from Voronezh, Russia; both 21 or younger and still students at the Lynn Conservatory of Music. Running approximately 45 minutes each, both shows are free to the public with the purchase of a Zoo Miami ticket. Before this performance, a special free “preview” performance will take place at the Coral Gables Museum on Family Day on Aragon, Saturday, February 10 at 1 PM.

“I’m excited to be a part of Orchestra Miami’s Carnival of Animals. It is certainly one of Camille Saint Sans’ most beautiful works. From the first note to the last, it’s got everything — excitement, eccentric ideas, and instrumentation that competes with playfulness, elegance, and science. This musical suite and Zoo Miami is the perfect marriage,” said Ron Magill. The animals depicted in Carnival of the Animals are lions, hens/roosters, tortoises, elephants, and kangaroos, to name a few. It will also feature The Swan, one of the most famous and recognizable pieces in all of music history. This performance will also include Ottorino Respighi’s The Birds, which is based on music from the 17th and 18th centuries and represents an attempt to transcribe birdsong into musical notation, illustrating bird actions, such as fluttering wings, or scratching feet.

“Saint-Saëns wrote this suite for fun in February 1886 and then prohibited anyone from listening to it until 1922. 102 years later, this is still one of his most enduring and fun compositions. What better way to enjoy this whimsical piece about animals than among the animals,” said Rinaldi.

The Park at JM Family Enterprises
200 Jim Moran Boulevard,
Deerfield Beach, Florida, 33442

Set sail for an entertaining yacht-themed evening from 6 – 10 p.m. on Saturday, March 9, as The Salvation Army of Broward County presents its inaugural Red Shield Regatta at JM Family’s “The Park” (200 Jim Moran Boulevard in Deerfield Beach). Special guest host Captain Lee Rosbach of Bravo TV’s “Below Deck” and “Couch Talk with Captain Lee & Kate” will be on hand to greet guests as The Salvation Army raises funds to benefit Plymouth Colony, an essential transitional housing complex in Hollywood that provides shelter and supportive services for families facing adversity.

Attendees to The Red Shield Regatta will enjoy gourmet food, an open bar, live entertainment, a silent auction, and the thrilling spectacle of model boat racing. Cruise or resort wear is suggested.

After 10 seasons starring on Bravo’s biggest show, “Below Deck,” Captain Lee Rosbach sailed his way into viewer’s hearts, becoming a beloved fan favorite and household name with over 1.2 million followers. While the ‘stud of the sea’ never even saw the ocean until he moved to the Turks & Caicos at the age of 35, he’s spent the past three decades circling the globe as a mega yacht captain known for his witty one-liners and no nonsense attitude. Whether he’s appearing before Andy Cohen on “Watch What Happens Live” or lawmakers on Capitol Hill, Captain Lee always brings his signature swagger.

The Salvation Army of Broward County engages in year-round critical operations, such as multiple shelters and housing programs to aid those experiencing homelessness; weekly food pantry distributions; daily soup kitchen; annual Angel Tree toy distribution program bringing joy to local families during the holidays, and others. To support these efforts fundraising activities like the seasonal Red Kettle bell ringing campaign and this year’s new Red Shield Regatta offer the community the chance to invest for long-term impact. All funds raised directly assist the most disadvantaged in Broward County.

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will present a free Family Fun Day, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Saturday, February 24. The day will feature kid-friendly activities presented in conjunction with museum partners Flamingo Gardens and NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale and will include a book signing and meet & greet with George LeMieux and Laura Mize, authors of Florida Heritage Kids. Their appearances are part of History Fort Lauderdale’s “Florida Scribes & Stories,” a meet the author monthly series that offers literary and history enthusiasts a chance to speak with local authors, purchase their latest releases and have them signed.

Florida Heritage Kids is an insightful novel that takes readers on historical journeys from a Spanish settlement to the modern era, through the eyes of five young people – Alonso, Holata, Thomas, Madeleine, and Ruby. Their stories tell of soldiers storming an enemy fort during a chaotic hurricane, the tale of a young Indian warrior helping rescue the Tribe, fleeing from a cloud of mosquitoes so big it blocks out the sun and the learning experience of moving to a new tropical paradise. Florida Heritage Kids highlights culture, heritage, and the natural resources found in Florida, which gives readers a better understanding of the Sunshine State’s fundamentals. The book is available in History Fort Lauderdale’s Museum Shop, on Amazon.com, and at FloridaHeritageKids.com.

Florida native George S. LeMieux has enjoyed a long career in both the private and public sectors. He served as Florida’s 34th United States senator in the 111th Congress. He also served as Florida’s deputy attorney general and as former Governor Charlie Crist’s chief of staff. LeMieux is a practicing attorney and is a chairman on the board of Gunster. He founded the LeMieux Center for Public Policy at Palm Beach Atlantic University.

Laura E. Mize is an award-winning book author, an independent journalist, and a former reporter for The Palm Beach Post. Her work has been picked up by the Associated Press, published in newspapers across the country, and aired on National Public Radio. Her first book, Florida Made: The 25 Most Important Figures Who Shaped The State (written with George S. LeMieux), won the 2019 National Indie Excellence Award in the history genre. Mize has written extensively on Florida business, history, food, dining, and agriculture. Some of that work has appeared in The Local Palate, the premier magazine on Southern culinary culture. In addition, she has an extensive portfolio of health sciences writing for institutions such as Mayo Clinic and the University of Florida, and for the award-winning, internationally syndicated radio show Health in a Heartbeat.

Drinks and light bites will be provided. Guests may RSVP at https://bit.ly/HFLFloridaScribesGLLM.

Miami Beach, Florida, 33139

Cost: $350

Joe’s Stone Crab in Miami Beach will once again host Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade’s 13th Annual “Claws for Kids” in memory of Judy Kramer on Tuesday, May 7. The event will kick off with a cocktail reception at 11 a.m., followed by lunch at noon. Guests will enjoy delicious stone crabs and Joe’s other signature items without the wait. The fundraising lunch is one of the last chances to enjoy stone crabs before stone crab season ends.

Mother and daughter duo, Lisa Mendelson and Lindsey Mendelson Pearson, are co-chairing this year’s event once again. Olga Guilarte is the Special Event Chair.

“Claws for Kids” is held in memory of Judy Kramer, a longtime Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade Board member, who helped create the event and chaired it since its inception until her passing in 2021.

Proceeds will benefit Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade’s crucial programs and services at its six Clubs and sites combined including its educational after school programs, tutoring and homework assistance, STEM, recreation, dance, arts and crafts, mentoring and summer and athletic programs. These programs help children realize their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens.

“Our 13th Annual ‘Claws for Kids’ lunch and awards ceremony wouldn’t be possible without the support of our long-time partner Joe’s Stone Crab, our returning co-chairs Lisa Mendelson and Lindsey Mendelson Pearson, our board members, sponsors and donors who are committed to providing great futures for Miami-Dade area youth,” said Alex Rodriguez-Roig, president of Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade. “The annual event helps us raise funds to serve the Clubs’ many positive programs, support the Capital Campaign to completely rebuild the Northwest Club into a state-of-the-art facility and expand the new sixth Club.”

Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade supporters who cannot attend the event can still enjoy Joe’s famous stone crabs at home or on a date of their choice with the purchase of a gift card, just in time for Mother’s Day. To participate, guests must purchase sponsorship gift cards on the Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade’s website to benefit “Claws for Kids.”

The Claws for Kids host committee includes Lily Pardo, Rae Stein and Virginia Vich.

“Claws for Kids” sponsorship opportunities are available and range from $500 to $30,000. Individual tickets are available to purchase for $350. To purchase sponsorships, please visit https://bgcmia.org/event/13th-annual-claws-for-kids-in-memory-of-judy-kramer/.

Maestro Elaine Rinaldi will conduct the performances, and the featured piano soloists are Elisabeth Thomashoff originally from Vienna, Austria, and Aneliya Novikova originally from Voronezh, Russia, both students at the prestigious Lynn Conservatory in Boca Raton. Running approximately 45 minutes each, the show is free and open to the public. The performance will be presented on the Museum Plaza, which faces Salzedo Street.
