About the BART B MORE & MATTHIAS TANZMANN:

BART B MORE LIVE video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcOuTQ4Ea8Y

Think of the newest craze in the international House scene and only one name comes to mind: Bart B More. After the massive international support on “So It Goes” and Bart’s “Freak” remix for Sandy Rivera the buzz seems to be growing by the minute! Everywhere his name shows up, dancefloor dopeness is guaranteed. Combining his love for beat-driven, looped techno music with big room house and electro Bart has been able to create a refreshing new cross-over sound. Together with Steve Bug and Daniel Stefanik, Matthias Tanzmann has produced various eps, drawing inspiration from the new dynamics and sounds that the collaborative process can create. Behind the decks he advanced to become one of the most popular and booked german house djs in the world, later securing residencies at Flokati (Munich) and Circoloco@dc10 (ibiza)

Haiti Mizik Relief Concert at Bayfront Park 100% Proceeds to American Red Cross 1/23-24/10

South Florida’s Music Community Responds to the Haiti Crisis with the “Haiti Mizik Relief” Concert at Bayfront Park
Saturday, January 23rd & Sunday, January 24th

100% of donations will go to The American Red Cross for relief of the earthquake-devastated country.

A group of event producers, musicians, community leaders and activists have leveraged their network to quickly organize a 2-day Haiti Mizik Relief Concert at Bayfront Park’s Tina Hills Pavilion on Saturday, January 23rd from 4pm-10pm and Sunday, January 24th from 2pm-8pm . The 100% benefit concert will collect a suggested $10 minimum donation at the door with all proceeds going directly to The American Red Cross for the immediate relief needs of Haiti. The benefit concert offers Miamians a chance to be together, listen to great music and raise desperately needed aid.
Miami’s community and the world have felt a deep sense of responsibility and urgency to donate their money, time and talent in the wake of the Haiti tragedy. Sadly, the concert lineup includes musicians who have been personally affected by the tragedy losing close relatives and waiting desperately to connect with loved ones in the devastated island nation.

The Haiti Mizik Relief Concert will musically mirror the diverse rhythms of Miami’s music community, featuring a plethora of Miami-based top Haitian, Latin Funk and World Music groups. Confirmed to appear are legendary Haitian Tuco Bouzi & Dixie Band performing along with Kapi & Yves Abel of Tabou Combo, Fredy of Top Vice, Jacky Ambroise of Strings, Ralph Conde of Nu-Look. Jan Sebon & Kazak International, Locos Por Juana, DJ Le Spam and The Spam All Stars, Rara Rock, Empress Addi & The Breeze, Jean P Jam, Papaloko & Lolay Mistik, Suénalo, Afrobeta, Conjunto Progreso, Jahfe, and DJ Pauer. Key leaders of both the Haitian and Miami community are also scheduled to appear.

The Haiti Mizik Relief Concert is produced on a not for profit/volunteer basis by The Rhythm Foundation and La Juana Productions, working closely with a group of musicians, artists and producers. Community support has been instantaneous and includes Epiphone, who has generously donated an Epiphone guitar that will be raffled off at the event and Bevinco of Miami has stepped in to provide for production needs. The Knight Foundation has also agreed to match donations up to $5,000. Media partners Miami New Times and WDNA 88.9FM have also agreed to sponsor the benefit concert.

Like American “blues” it probably has ancient antecedents, but as a distinct genre is only a couple centuries old. Not all Andalucian folk music is flamenco. Not all flamenco artists have been Andalucians (e.g., Sabicas), or even Spanish (e.g., Greco). Info continues here.

Mynt Lounge and Sow A Seed invite you to their Collaboration in Collectively Aiding Haiti 1/16/10

Mynt Lounge and Sow A Seed invite you to their Collaboration in Collectively Aiding Haiti As the desperation increases in Haiti during this tragic catastrophe and we are blessed to enjoy our weekend, let’s join forces in making a difference while we have a good time! Join us tomorrow Saturday, January 16th as we work side by side with Sow A Seed, to raise funds for the sole purpose of helping Haiti during this devastation. Sow A Seed is a non-profit organization created by a group of young professionals to provide the basic essentials for disadvantaged children living in extreme poverty in Haiti. In light of the recent tragedy they are converging all of their efforts towards earthquake relief.

All door proceeds (100%) will be donated to the victims of Haiti. As communities unite why should our industry be any different? Let’s give a little, while we dance a lot and rejoice knowing that a little goodness came from our celebration. This is just a minor step towards what we can do to make a difference, and since your loyalty has always made a difference to us we wouldn’t count on another audience for their support! Do not wait for leaders; do it alone, person to person. —Mother Teresa

SeminArt Art and Ideas Exhibit at the Public Library 1/27/10

Art and Ideas: Exhibiting at the Public Library

Public libraries were Miami’s original alternative exhibition spaces. Since the 1960s, local, national and international artists and curators have worked with the Miami-Dade Public Library System. Public libraries are well-used civic and community spaces. As the context for art and exhibitions, libraries can challenge artists to experiment and think about their work in new and different ways.

The Miami-Dade Public Library System accepts proposals for exhibitions, performance art and site-specific installations in all media. Its exhibition program includes contemporary art, material culture, folk art and art education (for example, exhibitions of student work organized by teachers or other educators), as well as exhibitions in the humanities about literary, historical, cultural, and interdisciplinary topics.

As Library Curator, Denise Delgado oversees the Art Services and Exhibitions Department at MDPLS, manages an exhibition program for the 48-branch system, develops public programs, acquires new work for the Library’s permanent art collection, and oversees its care and management. At this SeminArt, we’ll talk about the opportunities and resources available to artists through MDPLS, the upcoming Call for Proposals (deadline: March 10), the exhibition process, and more.

Denise will be available for specific questions at the end of the program. Stick around to meet other artists and community leaders—LegalArt SeminArts are great networking opportunities!

Fundraiser for Haiti featuring Melky Jean, Kymani Marley, and Julian Marley at Cafeina Lounge 1/15/10

Friday, January 15, 2010 at 7:00pm
Cafeina Lounge
297 NW 23 Street

From: Todd Michaels, Esq.
Dear Friends:

As we all know, the devastation that has occurred in Haiti is beyond comprehension. I don’t think that there is any way to imagine how dire the situation actually is. Despite Haiti’s beauty and the beauty of its people, its recent history has been a history of torment and destitution. Finally things seemed to be slowly getting better, and we get this awful reminder of how fragile Haiti is. The destruction is on an unimaginable scale, and we need to help. This may be the biggest humanitarian crisis that any of us will see in our lifetimes, and early reports are saying that there may even be 500,000 lives lost.

As many of you know, Haiti has played a large role in my life. I am on the board of two organizations that work closely with Haiti, and was there this past March with my close friend, Melky Jean, the sister of Wyclef, and our foundation, Carma-Haiti. Many of you have contacted me asking how you can help. The powers that be are asking people not to come to the island, as the situation is too critical for that. The best thing that can be done is to give money and/or goods to large organizations that are established on the ground in Haiti. Here is one way that you can help.

This Friday, January 15, 2010, I am hosting a fundraiser to benefit the Haitian relief effort. Please see the attached flyer for details. The event will feature performances by Kymani and Julian Marley, as well as Melky Jean. Our co-hosts include An Easy Production, Carma Foundation, Love Over all Foundation, the Workshop, Julian Marley, Cedella Marley, Kymani Marley, Melky Jean, Marlon Hill, Cassandra Theramene, Jose Ortiz, Cathy Goodall, Corey Corciari, Ivette Naranjo, and myself. All proceeds and donations will be split between Project Medishare, which is sending doctors and supplies to Haiti, and the Carma Foundation which has boats bringing supplies to Haiti and teams on the ground. The venue and all artists have agreed to donate their proceeds to the foundations.

The event lasts from 7PM-midnight, and a minimum donation of $20 dollars is required (donation gets you a complimentary drink). Anything above that is appreciated and needed. You can donate beforehand online and print out a receipt, or donate at the door. Non-Perishable items such as blankets, clothes, etc. will also be collected. The location is Cafeina lounge located at 297 NW 23rd Street in the Miami Design District, at the corner of 23rd street and NW 2 Avenue.

If you are unable to attend, but still want to help, donations can be made online at www.carmafoundation.org or www.projectmedishare.org .

I would urge you please to attend, or at the very least, to donate online. The people of Haiti need all that we can give right now, plain and simple.

Brooks Reid Band performs Live at Smoke’t Southern Kitchen and Tap A Neighborhood BBQ Joint 1/16/10

SMOKE’T SOUTHERN KITCHEN & TAP SETS MIAMI ABLAZE

Sophisticated Spin on Classic BBQ & Soul Food Faves
Marks Uncharted Territory on Coral Gables’ Dining Scene

The culinary team behind South Miami’s highly-successful TOWN Kitchen & Bar (TOWN), “A Neighborhood Joint,” announced today the debut of their latest dining destination:
Smoke’t Southern Kitchen & Tap
1450 South Dixie Highway, Coral Gables
“A Neighborhood BBQ Joint.” With Smoke’t, co-owners Brandon Lurie, John Janette and Michael Altman, executive chef at both TOWN and Smoke’t, infuse cosmopolitan Miami with Deep South flavor, re-interpreted.

Through hundreds of tastings, Altman and his team developed Smoke’t’s inventive, Southern-inspired menu items, such as Pepper Jack Cheese-filled Hushpuppies, and BBQ Pork Red Neck Rolls with Blazin Sauce (a creative transformation of sushi from Japanese cuisine to down home BBQ flavored meats and fixins’ wrapped in sticky rice) filled with Cole Slaw, served with a Homemade Spicy BBQ Dipping Sauce.

“The menu was really important to us,” said Altman. “We wanted sophisticated southern food which, until now, didn’t exist in Miami.”

As pit barbecue is one of the most important styles of food in Southern cuisine, Smoke’t showcases various flavors from U.S. barbecue capitals, all prepared on its in-house smoker, including Shredded Brisket with a Texas style BBQ sauce, Kansas City baby back ribs, Memphis style dry rub spare ribs and Carolina pulled pork. Rated “Best BBQ Sauce” by Jack Daniels Grill Your Eats South Beach, Altman’s knock-your-socks-off original creation is featured in most of Smoke’t’s offerings.

Traditional specialties include deep fried chicken on waffles, brussel sprouts, country fried steak, cornbread, mashed potatoes, fried catfish and berry cobblers. Smoke’t also serves southern-influenced salads and sandwiches. Smoke’t has even created a kids menu since even kids can’t resist many of Smoke’t’s offerings. The adults won’t be able to resist either with Smoke’t’s affordable menu pricing.

At 5,000 sq. ft., Smoke’t has capacity for more than 200 guests. Lounge-style furniture, cozy banquettes and roomy tables ensure a right-at-home feeling, where patrons are the center of attention. Eclectic artwork, antique décor elements and clever, eye-catching design features, like in-wall wood storage (for the smokers), round out Smoke’t’s casual yet chic ambiance with a touch of whimsy. The restaurant also features a club-style sound system for upcoming LIVE, classic rock music performances on their stage that highlights a Yamaha piano.

Ten flat screen televisions, a shuffleboard table and outdoor seating make Smoke’t a perfect spot for a light bite or drink. Smoke’t’s bar features 12 beers on tap, in addition to the 87 other beer selections and food items on its extensive bar menu.

In the months ahead, Smoke’t will launch an extensive wine program.

Smoke’t Southern Kitchen & Tap is open: Lunch will be served beginning early February, daily from 11:30 AM to 5:30 PM.
Dinner: Sunday – Tuesday 5:30 PM – 10:00 PM

Exhibition Openings José Gurvich, Performance Art of María Teresa Hincapié and Women’s Work / Men’s Work at the Frost 1/20/10

Exhibition Opening: The Fantastic World of José Gurvich, In Body and Soul: The Performance Art of María Teresa Hincapié and Women’s Work / Men’s Work Labor & Gender in America in the Wolfsonian Teaching Gallery.
Wednesday
Jan. 20, 2010
6 p.m. – 9 p.m.
The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum
Florida International University
10975 S.W. 17th Street
Miami, FL, 33199

José Gurvich was an extraordinary artist whose life bridged distant places and cultures. When he was six years old his family emigrated to Uruguay. His pictorial language developed from the diverse environments and art forms he was exposed to: intimate domestic scenes in Montevideo, rural life and religious festivities in Israel, New York’s crowds and vibrant urban views. Each element in his paintings is carefully chosen from lived experience and condensed by his constant search for the fundamental and essential. His art speaks directly to the soul, addressing the need to see reality through the eyes of the spirit. In his work Gurvich paired the fantastic and the everyday in a way that appears effortless. So join us for the opening and come experience The Fantastic World of José Gurvich.

This exhibition, curated by Francine Birbragher, examines the work of well-known Colombian performance artist María Teresa Hincapié. Hincapié’s initial studies were in acting and she developed her work in performance art, where she stood in the vanguard of this artistic medium in Colombia.

The Wolfsonian Teaching Gallery, a collaboration between The Wolfsonian-FIU, The Frost and FIU faculty, is intended to serve as a resource for teaching and learning. The support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation will provide an opportunity for FIU faculty to collaborate with staff from both museums to organize small exhibitions from The Wolfsonian collection that will be exhibited within The Frost Art Museum’s gallery space. The inaugural exhibition,Women’s Work / Men’s Work: Labor and Gender in America, was organized with Professor Alex Lichenstein, Department of History, FIU, who will teach a course on twentieth-century U.S. labor history in the Spring semester of 2010.

Kraft
“Trees give us shade, fruit, flowers, medicine, oxygen… and paper. We were asking ourselves where the soul of a tree converted into paper could be hiding. One thing occurred to us: make the folds sing. This gave us some sounds that led us to notes for a primary musical scale, the tone of which, once unfolded, magically rebuilt the rustling of the leaves in the trees, the murmur of waves on the seashore, the crackle of fire or the thunder of a summer storm. No longer can we put off the need for a playful and vital spectacle that will simply deal with our love for things and people. Quite simply, letting us move on, without artifice or ambiguities without great pretensions. And that is what gave rise to Kraft, like a primary idea, like a kid’s thought, by pilling up paper and cardboard for a big game”.

Cleveland Orchestra Miami Residency expands educational and community collaboration programs in the Miami-Dade community

Cleveland Orchestra Miami Residency expands educational and community collaboration programs in the Miami-Dade community

The Orchestra’s Miami Residency continues to develop through expanded education and community programs that serve thousands in the Miami-Dade area. The Orchestra’s residency activities in Miami were conceived and made possible with the leadership of the Musical Arts Association of Miami, the Miami-based support organization dedicated to fundraising for the Cleveland Orchestra Miami Residency.

A new component of The Cleveland Orchestra’s Miami Residency in 2010 is an in-school performance by the entire ensemble, titled “Meet the Orchestra,” at Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High School, a Miami-Dade County Public School. Music Director Franz Welser-Möst and the full Orchestra will participate in this historic event.

Other educational activities in January include curriculum-based programs with “I Have a Dream” students at Hibiscus Elementary School in the Miami-Dade County Public Schools district and with students from various schools at Coconut Grove Cares/The Barnyard, and an orchestral and teacher workshop at Coral Reef Senior High School. Numerous in-school activities are planned, including coaching sessions with orchestral students at New World School of the Arts as well as “Musical Rainbows,” lively programs that introduce children to instruments of the orchestra, one at a time, at four Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Activities with Miami-Dade County Public Schools are supported by an Access to Artistic Excellence grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

In 2010, community partnerships will expand beyond inaugural partners (the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County, University of Miami Frost School of Music, New World Symphony, and Miami-Dade County Public Schools) to include Coconut Grove Cares/The Barnyard, the Miami-Dade County Department of Public Affairs, Miami Music Project, Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Overtown Youth Center, Sunday Afternoons of Music, Arts for Learning, Miami Music Mentors, and the Archdiocese of Miami.

Since the beginning of The Cleveland Orchestra’s Miami Residency in 2007, The University of Miami Frost School of Music has been an important institutional partner. In 2010, Frost School of Music residency activities will include choral conducting coaching sessions with Cleveland Orchestra Director of Choruses Robert Porco, a chamber composition reading session, and a series of masterclasses and forums, including a Music Education Forum led by Cleveland Orchestra Director of Education and Community Programs Joan Katz Napoli.

Support for the Miami Residency is provided by the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, and the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners. The 2010 Miami Residency sponsors are Feldman Gale, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, and Northern Trust. Music Director Franz Welser-Möst will lead the Orchestra in five concerts at the Arsht Center. Repertoire for the first week of The Cleveland Orchestra’s 2010 Miami Residency includes Richard Strauss’s Don Juan, Johannes Brahms’s Symphony No. 2, and Thomas Adès’s Violin Concerto with Leila Josefowicz as soloist for concerts on January 22 and 23.

The second weekend of the residency (January 28-30) celebrates Beethoven. The Orchestra will offer engaging pre-concert lectures to enhance the Friday and Saturday concerts. Immediately after the Thursday program, a new post-concert chamber music performance, “Beethoven with a Twist,” will be held in an intimate, club-like setting featuring musicians from the Orchestra performing in Carnival Studio Theater.

These Cleveland Orchestra performances are presented by the Musical Arts Association of Miami and the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County. The January 28, 29, and 30 concerts are sponsored by Northern Trust.

JAM at MAM – CANCELLED by Miami Art Museum 1/21/10

{Normally, on the third Thursday of every month, the Soul Of Miami crew excitedly rolls out to our favorite monthly party, JAM at MAM. It is a great way to just relax in a nice artsy atmosphere. JAM at MAM was the reason we became members of the Miami Art Museum. It was one of the main avenues through which we were brought into the art scene in Miami. And now, the Miami Art Museum management has cancelled it for unspecified reasons. Below is the message in their recent email.}

JAM @ MAM: As 2010 gets underway, Miami Art Museum is planning to relaunch JAM @ MAM in a new format to offer an even more meaningful experience to South Florida residents and JAM at MAM’s loyal following. Beginning in January, the third Thursdays event will not take place until further notice; please check miamiartmuseum.org or the NOW @ MAM calendar for updated event listings.

{We think this is a big loss for the city, and being as MAM is a public organization, we want to make our response public. I am sending the below email to the Miami Art Museum. If you would like to send your own, try sending it to news@miamiartmuseum.org or membership@miamiartmuseum.org. If we get better information, we shall post that, too.}

[Dear Miami Art Museum,

As a long-time member, who was originally converted by the excellent JAM at MAM series, I have to say that discontinuing it seems like a really bad idea. I know that it has converted many other people, including several of our friends, as well, into museum members and art lovers. I have watched the JAM, over the years, change from a small group of old ladies to a large, energetic crowd of people of all ages, including young people.

JAM at MAM introduced so many new people to the Miami Art Museum, and to the arts themselves. People who would not have normally come to an art museum began attending on a regular basis and being exposed to new and interesting work.

Certainly over the past few months, the event had lost some of its luster. Fewer live music acts and less variety in programming, as well as a lack of changing exhibitions led to a decline in attendance, but even at its lowest, there was still a decent crowd. The big crowds could easily have been brought back by more exciting programming. This was a program loved by many.

The city is losing an important cultural activity by the shutting down of JAM at MAM. Why is this being done? Was it really such a drain on resources? Why take such a popular event and stop doing it? How has the feedback been? I look forward to hearing what the future of this will be.

Sincerely,]

April 28th Fior Entertainment Presents eMERGE Fashion Show, headliner Fashion by Azucar and music provided by DJ Entice (WEDR-FM / 99Jamz /Flo Rida’s DJ) will begin at 8p. Make sure you don’t miss this fashionable event!

eMERGE trade show is having its 1st annual event, which will be held in Miami, Florida on April 27 and 28th, 2010. The show will be held at the beautiful Hilton Miami Downtown, overlooking the intracoastal waterways and downtown Miami. eMERGE targets retailers that are in search of for the hottest apparel and clothing companies an outlet for the world to view their artwork.

eMERGE is an innovative fashion trade show for upcoming and emerging brands, to showcase their collections to the best boutiques and retailers. Most conventional trade shows do not focus their attention on independent companies that are yearning for exposure in the fashion market. eMERGE is here to assist these brands in growing their business to become the next big “IT” FACTOR. Brands attending eMERGE are breaking barriers and aren’t afraid to take risks to be a recognizable force in the market, and therefore, they will….”ARISE AND CONQUER”

Founded by two individuals who understand and have been in the same position as the brands that will attend eMERGE, so they understand their positions and know that they want to prosper if given the opportunity to do so. One of the founders runs a clothing company and knows how much is needed to run an effective brand. Constantly being put in a position to come up with obscene amounts of funds that was unobtainable to gain exposure. eMERGE will allow clothing companies to showcase their goods in a Metropolitan city for a low, cost effective price. Retailers will be introduced to brands that are usually overlooked at major trade shows. eMERGE will give them both a platform to meet in order to grow their businesses; to bring what is hidden into plain view.

eMERGE is pleased to announce that a portion of all proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society and Kids off Streets.

Format
One of the only combined 12-day tennis event on the ATP and Sony Ericsson WTA Tour calendars, the Sony Ericsson Open features the world’s top-ranked pros – 96 men and 96 women – in singles competition, and 32 men’s teams and 32 women’s teams in doubles action.

History
On August 29, 2006, Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications announced the signing of a four year contract to become the title sponsor of the Sony Ericsson Open. With $9 million in prize money the Sony Ericsson Open is currently the largest tournament in the world with Title Sponsorship. When Butch Buchholz established the event in 1985, it marked the first time in 56 years that a new two-week tournament featuring men and women was launched. Located in Delray Beach (Laver’s International Tennis Center) in 1985 and Boca Raton (Boca West) in 1986, the tournament found a permanent home in 1987 on Miami’s Key Biscayne. In 1994, Miami-Dade County christened the Tennis Center at Crandon Park, a 30-acre expanse that is transformed each year from a public tennis facility into a full-fledged festival for the Sony Ericsson Open. The Sony Ericsson Open, considered one of the most prestigious titles in professional tennis, has been awarded “Tournament of the Year” by the ATP in eight of the last 10 years. In 2004 the event was also named “Tournament of the Year” by the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour. In 1999, the tournament was purchased by IMG.

Tickets (305) 442-3367 or www.SonyEricssonOpen.com

Single-session tickets for all 24 sessions of the 2010 Sony Ericsson Open are on sale now. Fans can purchase tickets by calling the Sony Ericsson Open Ticket Office at (305) 442-3367 or by going online at www.sonyericssonopen.com.

The 26th edition of the Sony Ericsson Open is scheduled for March 22-April 4 and will once again feature the top-96 players on both ATP and Sony Ericsson WTA Tours competing at the Crandon Park Tennis Center for one of the most prestigious titles in tennis.

Men’s and women’s qualifying will start on Monday, March 22 with a select number of women’s opening round main draw matches taking place on Tuesday, March 23. Men’s main draw action kicks-off on Wednesday, March 24.

Additionally, the Tuesday women’s main draw start means that women’s seeded players will begin play on Thursday, March 25 rather than the traditional Friday start.

But the Sony Ericsson Open is more than just tennis, it is a total entertainment experience. High fashion, fine food, fabulous shopping and celebrity musical performances have made the tournament the most glamorous on tour.

Come see why huge crowds as well as the biggest names in music, entertainment and sports like Owen Wilson, Eliza Dushku, Meagan Good, Adrien Brody, Shakira, Paulina Rubio, Alejandro Sanz, Enrique Inglesias, Anna Kournikova, Dwyane Wade, Terrell Owens and Helio Castroneves visit the Sony Ericsson Open each spring.

Don’t miss any of the action. Secure your seats for 2010 and watch the best players in the world including Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andy Roddick, Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams and Venus Williams as they battle on the purple courts for one of the most coveted trophies on tour.

In addition to the single-session tickets, the Sony Ericsson Open also has Ticket Packages and Vacation Packages available to suit everyone’s needs.

You can call the Sony Ericsson Open ticket office at 305-442-3367 or email the ticket office at tickets@imgworld.com for more information.

The Sony Ericsson Open is one of nine ATP Masters Series events on the ATP calendar, a Premier Mandatory event on the Sony Ericsson WTA TOUR calendar, and features the top men’s and women’s tennis players in the world. ON THE ROAD: ART DECO CELEBRATES THE MOTORCAR
One of the hallmarks of the 1930s was its passionate love affair with new technology, particularly the technology of transportation. On the sea, ocean liners like the Normandie promoted the elegance of fast transatlantic crossings, while on the rails, streamlined trains like the 20th Century Limited provided passengers with unrivaled luxury and speed. But it is on America’s roadways that a new passion became ubiquitous: the motorcar. Art Deco Weekend 2010 also celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Antique Automobile Club of America.

The weekend begins with a keynote lecture on Thursday, January 14th and culminates in a street festival January 15–17, 2010. Guests may attend musical, theatrical and dance performances, as well as participate in a number of guided tours, attend lectures and film screenings, and browse Ocean Drive lined with vendors of antiques and collectibles from the Art Deco and mid-twentieth century eras. Celebrate Miami’s Skateboarding History at AE District 1/9/10

THE MIA PROGRAM – a ten year look at Miami-Dade through the eyes of local skateboarder/photographer Ian O’Connor, both on and off the Skateboard .
“The Program” is a limited edition 100 page printed publication produced solely by skater owned and operated MIA skate shop. It highlights some of the most pinnacle photos not only of skateboarding in Miami, but also in Ian’s career. Some of the photos have graced covers of the largest skate mag’s in the world, while others have never been seen until now. The Program does not only focus on the act of skating, it also takes a look into what we encounter on the streets of the magic city . Whether lying in the gutters of Liberty City, or hanging out of a helicopter above Biscayne Bay, Ian takes you on a visual trip of one of the most colorful and fascinating cities, all the while documenting some of the finest skateboarders in the world.
In addition to the MIA Program Publication, an event will be held at the AE District on 1/9/10. This event will showcase the Zine as well as Ian’s first solo photo show created specifically for “MIA-The Program.”
There will be live silk screening from longtime friend/skateboarder Rocky Grimes, who will be printing photos from The Program on t-shirts.
The music will be provided by DJ/MIA skater KEENONE.
A retrospective video of skating for the last 20 years in Miami put together by Josh Stewart, Joe Perrin, and Richard Quintera will be projected.
We will have a Mini Ramp Jam in back of the Gallery (THE GOAT RAMP will be set up)
This will be a chance like never before to see into the real culture of not only skateboarding but also a piece of Miami that has not yet been exposed in its pure and proper form by those who create and live it.

The MIA Program Magazine Release & Photo Show after party will be at Poplife

David Castillo Gallery presents Gustavo Roman and Shelter Serra 1/9/10

David Castillo Presents
Gustavo Román, Yet Nightly Pitch My Moving Tent
Shelter Serra, Dark Castle
January 9 – February 6, 2010
Reception January 9, 7-10 pm

David Castillo Gallery is pleased to present Gustavo Román’s Yet Nightly Pitch My Moving Tent and Shelter Serra’s Dark Castle.

In the main gallery, Gustavo Román explores the psychological and physical correlation of sexuality. In Yet Nightly Pitch My Moving Tent, through unequivocal implication of the male form, the artist exaggerates sensuality to the point of undermining manliness. White bedspreads emerge from the darkness and float on a black background as a spectral appearance awakens underneath, pitching a “tent”. The small scale of the drawings forces the viewer to become intimate with Román’s drawings and their suggestion.

Gustavo Román was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1974 and currently lives and works in Miami, Florida. He received a Bachelor of Humanities from the University of Puerto Rico in 1999, and a Masters of Fine Arts from Florida International University in 2007.

In the David Castillo Annex, Shelter Serra will present a new sculpture alongside a series of paintings and drawings inspired by the processes of digital technology and archetypes of mass media. In Dark Castle, Serra reproduces a Disney-esque Cinderella sand castle in black marble suggesting the permanence and ephemeral state of consumerism. Serra’s new paintings and drawings comment on the filtering of information and the notion of serialty. By blurring the line between hand-made and digitally created art, Serra invites the audience to examine technology’s role as a determiner of our visual environment.

Shelter Serra was born in Bolinas, California in 1972. He received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of California Santa Cruz in 1994 and his Master in Fine Arts in Painting and Printmaking from Rhode Island School of Design in 1996. The artist has exhibited nationally and internationally. He currently lives and works in New York City.

Beyond Biba: A Portrait of Barbara Hulanicki
UK, Louis Price, 2009, 56 min

Barbara Hulanicki will always be remembered for BIBA, the shop that changed the face of UK fashion in the 1960’s and 70’s. A phenomenon in the truest sense of the word, BIBA has left an indelible mark on the history of British fashion. It was not only the place where celebrities like Mick Jagger, David Bowie, and Twiggy shopped but where arguably the most powerful figure in the world of fashion, infamous editor of Vogue Anna Wintour (the devil in The Devil Wears Prada) got her start.

Just as Barbara was a key ingredient in the cultural explosion that occurred in London in the 1960’s, she also found herself at the birth of the incredible regeneration of Miami Beach in the late 1980’s and 90’s. Barbara still resides in Miami Beach, and continues to work as one of the most respected interior designers in the United States.

Offering a rare insight into Barbara Hulanicki today by sharing her memories from the impossible glamour of BIBA to the murder of her father and taking us on an intimate tour of her home, her studio, and South Beach itself. We witness Barbara’s amazing sketches, gain entrance to a private exhibition of them attended by friends and fans like the Rolling Stones Ron Wood and super-models Kate Moss and Twiggy. Beyond Biba is an all access portrait of an overlooked and elusive artist who refused to merely give up and live in the shadow of the past.

Barbara Hulanicki will be present at the screening.

PRECEEDED BY:
Irene William: Queen of Lincoln Road
Dir. Eric Smith, US, 2005, 23mins

Over nine years, self-defined hag fag Eric Smith documented his friendship with an extraordinary elderly lady named Irene Williams. A public stenographer and eccentric fashion fixture on South Beach whose wild and colorful handmade outfits caught everyones eyes. This short film is a hilarious and loving tribute to a woman who was as bright and unique as the clothe she made for herself.

“NEW WORLD ORDER” or “NWO” refers to a conspiracy theory for the emergence of a one world currency, religion, language and an absolute fascist ONE WORLD GOVERNMENT.
A secretive satanic elite/Illuminati with a globalist agenda is conspiring to rule the world through an autonomous world government, which would replace sovereign nation-states and have absolute complete control of only 500 million remaining human inhabitants on Earth. Currently the Earth’s total human population is 6,794,400,000, which means most all of us will have to disappear! This is being accomplished with “Population Control”, which includes contrived wars, epidemic diseases, a poisoned food and water supply, drugs, poverty, artificially manipulated weather disasters and mass killings in concentration type camps. Significant occurrences in politics and financial disasters have been orchestrated by an extremely influential cabal of the wealthiest families in the world, such as the Rothchilds, Rockafellers, House of Windsor, The Bush family and more are operating through many front and corporate organizations. Numerous historical and current events such as 9/11 are seen as steps in an on-going plot to achieve world domination, through manipulation of the media, secret political gatherings and decision-manking processes in places as The United Nations, Bilderberg Group, Bohemian Club, Trilateral Commission, Free Masonry, The Vatican, Inner London, Washington D.C. and more.
With the “current” access to vast amounts of information by using the Internet, this knowledge has been seeping into popular culture thereby inaugurating an unrivaled period of concerned citizens actively preparing for apocalyptic scenarios in the United States and abroad.
An insurrectionary movement capable of subverting this established Illuminati agenda has been forming in various places around the world.
Please be informed and do research on this topic, you will find it quite fascinating!
See you there…

MIRIAM FERNANDES GALLERY cordially invites you to join Charles DuBack and his extraordinary abstract and joyously colored work entitled “Translation of Nature” on Saturday, January 9th, 2010 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.
A respected American contemporary painter, his work has been featured in prominent exhibitions including “Recent Paintings” at the Museum of Modern Art NYC, “The Biennial International Exhibition” at the Brooklyn Museum, the “Whitney Annual Exhibition of Contemporary American Painting” and a recent solo exhibition at the Portland Museum of Art this past fall.
DuBack’s recognition amongst his contemporaries reflects his years of experience and great potential. His paintings are housed in many museum collections and other public institutions throughout the country.
The artist, a devoted modernist who in the 1950s shared a New York studio with Alex Katz and Bernard Langlais, was inspired by the earlier paintings of Matisse and Picasso, and was involved in the emerging abstract expressionism, color-field and Pop Art movements.
With his artist’s eye for defining shape with a bold simplicity of brush stroke, sensitivity to color and abstract realist sensibilities, he has excelled at translating that visual vocabulary understanding into works of art that convey the vibrancy and animation of nature.
“I let nature invade my mind with her variety of changing forms; these become the building blocks that I draw upon to create.” Charles DuBack.

“We live in a world where most people plug through the day on Autopilot. Telling themselves tomorrow will be different. Yet many do nothing to change the circumstances of their lives that could open the door for something different to happen.” Gabriel Cousens, MD

Introducing… an URBAN CONSCIOUS LIVING: E V E N T
Because in 2010, it is possible to change your life!

It’s finally here! All forces have joined together to present in Miami, through Urban Conscious Living and Dr. Etti, LongevityNow, a one-day educational seminar featuring world-renowned health and holistic leaders whose goal is to build, educate and inspire, through love, education and awareness, the importance of self- realization and health. Inside and out. Taking us through the steps and journey of ultimate transformation.

It’s never happened before in Miami. Such wealth and power from leaders like David “Avocado” Wolfe and Garbiel Cousens MD. Who are joining Miami local Detox Celebrity Dr. Etti, for this one-day extravaganza and celebration of health, consciousness, energy and life. And, following, for the first time, PRAYERDANSE SPIRITUAL RAVE, a new monthly celebration, launching 2010 with a party of positive music, movement, and vegetarian cuisine in an atmosphere of love, beauty and acceptance.

The Space is incredible. It is the home of Urban Conscious Living, a new personal-growth center, lifestyle, eatery and community, opening 2010, featuring a sophisticated ambiance and spiritually-based programs and activities. A multi-dimensional Epi-Center for health and wellness with like-minded community members. All of whom strive for a better life, a place of belonging and a creative opportunity for happiness, health and consciousness. A Country Club offering life-changing results.

Come see DAVID WOLFE, the rock star of health who boasts a fan base of Hollywood celebrities, global ambassadors and America’s top CEO’s. Because he has a passion for nutrition, and presents his Organic Superfoods, and eco-chic style, in a revolutionary manner that inspires audiences to wake up to health, beauty nutrition, herbalism and chocolate! Understanding the inner-workings, the delicate chemistry, and hardcore mechanics of the human body and how it’s affected by modern-day stressors which produce disease, and an imbalanced lifestyle. He is also the co-founder of TheBestDayEver.com, an on-line health magazine.

Also featuring GABRIEL COUSENS, MD, founder of the Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center in Arizona, whose health resume takes up this entire paragraph including holistic physician, medical researcher, world-recognized live-food nutritionist, psychiatrist, family therapist, homeopath, Rabbi, acupuncturist, Ayurvedic practitioner, green juice fast expert, detoxification fast expert, ecological leader, Reiki master, Divinity Doctor, author, lecturer, culture-bridger and world peaceworker.

DR. ETTI, creator of LongevityNOW, also known as South Florida’s leading Detox Doctor, brings sex appeal, fun, juicing and excitement to this event. Together with Rachel Levy and Susana Nudelman Perczek, they passionately orchestrate the PRAYERDANSE SPIRITUAL RAVE manifestation concept after this day of learning providing the opportunity to express renewed sources of energy, vitality, spirituality and fulfillment. It is also the time to drink elixirs and “PARTY,” awakening the senses and experiencing a natural high to music spun by DJ Tori.

“Love is Everything” is a trademark message of Urban Conscious Living which represents the fundamental and essential theme threaded throughout all events. It is also the goal and reality of its one-of-a-kind mind, body and spirit facility.

Event registration available at DrEtti.com. For more information contact Rachel Levy LMHC @ 305-761-1775 rachel@urbanconsciousliving.com

Locust Projects presents Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova 1/16/10

Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova
An Uneven Floor
Opening reception: Saturday, January 16, 7-10pm
Through February 20
Conversation with the artist: February 11, 6:30pm

Locust Projects is pleased to present a new exhibition by Miami-based artist Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova. An Uneven Floor is a site-specific installation featuring an unleveled floor covered in pink carpet. The work represents Rodriguez-Casanova’s most ambitious project to date, encompassing the entire 2,700 square foot gallery space.

An Uneven Floor is a continuation of the artist’s interest in domestic objects and suburban architectural elements that explore social, cultural and autobiographical matters. Employing the language of Minimalism, the plush pink carpet suggests the safe environment of a domestic setting, while the unexpected elevation and descent of An Uneven Floor will create a sense of instability as visitors walk through the space. This contradiction sets the stage for an unsettling dialogue between the viewer’s perception of a familiar object and its new context.

Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova studied at the Ringling School of Art and Design, Sarasota, FL and the New World School of the Arts in Miami, FL. Rodriguez-Casanova was the recipient of a 2007 Reed Foundation Fellowship at the Vermont Studio Center and has received prestigious awards including the South Florida Cultural Consortium. The artist’s work is currently on view at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Gardens, Coral Gables, FL. Recent exhibitions include David Castillo Gallery, Miami, FL; the Sculpture Center, Long Island City, NY; and Socrates Sculpture Park, Long Island City, NY.

This exhibition is made possible with the support from: Andy Warhol Foundation; Galt & Skye Mikesell; Hannibal Cox Jr. Foundation; Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the Cultural Affairs Council, the Mayor, and the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners. Special thanks to Lin Lougheed and Galt & Skye Mikesell. The Frost Art Museum presents The Fantastic World of Jose Gurvich 1/20/10

The Frost Art Museum Presents The Fantastic World of José Gurvich

The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum presents The Fantastic World of José Gurvich, a new exhibition by renowned Uruguayan artist José Gurvich, on Wednesday, January 20 at 6pm. This event, free and open to the public, will take place at The Frost Art Museum at FIU’s Maidique Campus located at 10975 SW 17 Street, Miami, FL 33199 .

“The Frost is honored to bring this exhibition to a South Florida audience,” said Dr. Carol Damian, director & chief curator of The Frost Art Museum.

José Gurvich was an extraordinary artist whose life bridged distant places and cultures. When he was six years old his family immigrated to Uruguay.

Also opening January 20-

In Body and Soul- The Performance Art of Maria Teresa Hincapié. The show, curated by Francine Birbragher, examines the work of Maria Teresa Hincapié, a well-known Colombian performance artist.

Women’s Work/Men’s Work: Labor and Gender in America-The Wolfsonian Teaching Gallery at The Frost Art Museum is a collaboration between The Wolfsonian-FIU, The Frost, and FIU faculty. The exhibition serves as a resource for teaching and learning. The support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation will provide an opportunity for FIU faculty to collaborate with staff from both museums to organize small exhibitions from The Wolfsonian collection that will be exhibited within The Frost Art Museum’s gallery space.

The exhibit, curated by Cecilia de Torres, is on loan from El Museo Gurvich in Montevideo, Uruguay and will be on view through April 2010.

Calix Gustav Gallery Represented At Miami International Art Fair 1/7-10/10

Calix Gustav Gallery Represented At Miami International Art Fair

Celebrated fair gives cutting-edge gallery a nod with inclusion of Carl Pascuzzi’s piece “Dear Art Fair” in Wynwood Pavilion

Calix Gustav Gallery is pleased to announce the inclusion of one of its current exhibit’s most prized pieces in the Miami International Art Fair’s Wynwood Pavilion. Hand-picked by the gallery’s owner and curator, Amanda Fernandez-Leon, “Dear Art Fair” (2009) by Carl Pascuzzi contains a tongue-in-cheek message that makes it the ideal piece to represent Calix Gustav Gallery’s unique personality.

Currently on display in a prime location at the Miami Beach Convention Center – which was notably appointed by MIA Founder Lee Ann Lester – “Dear Art Fair” has far more than visual appeal. The piece, consisting of three separate 18” x 24” acrylic photo prints mounted on LED light boxes with messages reading: “I AM,” “OVER TRYING” and “TO PLEASE YOU;” is a flashy yet satirical depiction of an artist’s plea for attention and accolades.

“Dear Art Fair” is currently part of a larger exhibit at Calix Gustav Gallery entitled“Grit: to endure a trying situation and continue on without complaint.” Grit features an array of photography, sculptures, light installations and mixed media exploring the mundane, gritty, sordid and glamorous side of Miami’s Wynwood Arts District. Highlights include Yanelis Lopez’s Soap and Potatoes Series, an exploration of the manipulation of simple, everyday items; Jonathan Stein’s photography portraying the hardcore reality of social intolerance toward the transgendered community; Spunk and The Orange Kittens’ shocking “Casting Couch” represent the deplorable human lack of morality; Charles Chace’s sleek, industrial-inspired metal pieces; as well as Klaus Guingang’s thrilling marquee-like light installation “MAFIART.”

Montserrat Franco as Betty Boop at the Cabaret Extravaganza in Sobe Arts 1/8-10/10

Celebrate the new year with a fresh and compelling multimedia arts cabaret, and be the first to experience an intimate new performance space in the heart of Miami Beach’s cultural arts district. This limited-run opening event will be a feast for the senses, combining theater, music, and animation with bar and tapas from the sublime Red Light restaurant. Under the artistic direction of Carson Kievman, shows will run at 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays and 7pm on Sundays from January 1st to the end of Art Deco weekend on January 17th.

The Grand Opening Cabaret features musical and visual elements from the 1930s and 1940s, around the time the 1937 theater was first built, but adds surprises along the way. “We want to honor the historic nature of the theater,” explains Dr. Kievman, “but at the same time we’re looking to create a very contemporary experience. We’ve interspersed the original torch songs with theatrical vignettes from other eras, and together they make for a bizarre and compelling look at relationships.” There will also be scenes from the popular “Tunes ‘N Toons” production that was commissioned by Miami Beach to close November’s Sleepless Night event, combining esoteric live music from the 1930’s with classic film animation and live action.

Starring actors Montserrat Franco, Ivette Viñas, Andres Lefevre, Philip de la Cal and featuring Montserrat Franco as Betty Boop, Andres Lefevre as Cab Calloway’s Ghost. Created & Directed by Carson Kievman. Conductor, Robert Chumbley – Keyboards, Kiki Sanchez – Clarinet, Paul Gordillo – Tenor Saxophone, Juan Silveira – Drums, Tony Suarez – Bass, James Quinlan

Little Stage Theater @SoBe Arts is an intimate space that will provide seating for approximately 60 cabaret patrons so sell-outs are anticipated. Click here to purchase tickets. For more information or to reserve seats: events@sobearts.org- (305) 674-9220

Opening Reception New Paintings by Jon Kitner 1/7/10

Opening Reception: Thursday January 7, 2010 6-8pm at ArtServe. Meet the artist! Exhibit located in Francie Bishop Good Artists Workspace and runs until January 30, 2010.
ArtServe
1350 East Sunrise Boulevard Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304

Jon Kitner is a practicing painter and a retired Professor of Art from Miami Dade College’s North Campus, where he taught studio art for thirty seven years. He is has a Master’s degree in Fine Art, Painting from Kent State University in 1970. During his career at Miami Dade College, Jon has won numerous awards and recognition, including the Arthur Hertz Endowed Teaching Chair for Arts and Humanities in 1994 and the Simon Bolivar Endowed Teaching Chair in 2000. He was recognized by the White House as a United States Distinguished Teacher in 1986. In 1988, he was awarded a Fulbright Teaching Exchange to Wakefield College in England for one year. In 2000, Jon was awarded the Innovator of the Year award from the college at large.

Jon has exhibited his artwork since the 1970s. His first one person show in South Florida was at the Meeting Point Art Center in Coral Gables in 1979. Over the next fifteen years, he has participated in group exhibitions and one person shows at the Greene Gallery, Gallerie 99 and the Barbara Black Gallery. His work has also been exhibited at the Museum of Art in Fort Lauderdale’s Hortt Exhibition, for three years in the 1980s, including 1984 when he won an Award of Merit in Painting. Jon’s work is in private collections in Florida and Ohio.

Jon’s new series of “montages” are acrylic on canvas paintings that feature the juxtaposition of various images within the same painting. The images are incorporated with a desire to encourage the viewer to respond to the work on more than one level. For example, in the painting entitled, “Memorial”, the large, panoramic scene is of a South Florida warehouse next to a lake. But, cut into the middle of this scene are two smaller images, one of a mountain view from Colorado, near St. Mary’s Glacier and a view into a cabinet from the Vatican Museum in Rome. The inspiration for this painting came from a sketching trip to St. Mary’s Glacier where Jon learned that a young boy had perished the night before from exposure. While all of Jon’s images do not necessarily translate into a story, they are intended to spur in the viewer a variety of associative feelings. Currently, Jon is working on a series of paintings all based on familiar locations throughout South Florida.
