FREEDOM ?: an art exhibition at CANDO Arts Co-Op 7/16/10

“FREEDOM ?: an art exhibition”
Friday, July 16, 2010, 4-9 p.m.
CANDO Arts Co-Op
309 23rd Street, Miami Beach
One block west of Collins Avenue
CANDO ARTS CO-OP on Facebook

ARE YOU FREE?

What shackles bind you? Are you tied up emotionally? Spiritually? Financially? Politically?

The resident and guest artists of CANDO Arts Co-Op have unleashed their creativity in a variety of media to express their feelings about what freedom means to them: having it, losing it, fighting for it. For one artist, it’s a commentary on women’s lib; for another, it’s a visual reminder of how fragile our society is, and yet for others it’s about physical barriers and how our hearts liberate us.

The interpretations are as varied and individual as the artists themselves and you can share their experiences at the Opening Reception of “Freedom ?: an art exhibition,” Friday, July 16, 4-9 p.m. at CANDO ARTS CO-OP, 309 23rd Street, Miami Beach, one block west of Collins Avenue. 2010 Live-Aid Remade School of Rock Charity Event 7/30/10

2010 Live-Aid Remade School of Rock Charity Event
July 30th, 2010, 7PM
Club Flavour
28985 McFarlane Road
Coconut Grove, FL
Website

School of Rock presents Live Aid Remade. A tribute to the historic 1985 concert/fundraiser that took place in London and Philadelphia, the show will feature selections from the Woodstock of the 80’s as it came to be known – that have truly stood the test the time.

How big was Live Aid? How about 70,000 + people in London and just under 100,000 people in Philadelphia big? How about big enough for Led Zeppelin to re-form? How about big enough that Mick Jagger performed and didn’t even headline? How big is that? The word is global.

Global. As in, Live Aid was a global jukebox where U2 and Madonna could rub shoulders with The Beach Boys and The Four Tops. Where Judas Priest could go on directly after Crosby, Stills, & Nash and Run DMC and Black Sabbath could play back to back. Where 80’s one-hit wonders like Billy Ocean + Rick Springfield could share the stage with Keith Richards and Tina Turner. Simply put, it was where musicians could put aside their egos and play for the enjoyment and the betterment of others.

I still can’t think of a better reason to rock. We hope you feel the same.
The 2010 Tour will hit Miami Friday, July 30th and will feature one of our own Miami School of Rock student graduate, Chris Bromley, on guitar.

Tickets for this event are available online.
Come out and support this great cause.

Opening Fabienne Lasserre What is Found There 7/9/10

Opening Friday July 9 at 6pm : Fabienne Lasserre “What is Found There”
Gallery Diet is pleased to announce the first Miami solo exhibition by New York based artist, Fabienne Lasserre. In the below email to gallery director, Nina Johnson, the artist describes the origins of the project, which will consist predominantly of sculpture.

“The title of the show, ‘What Is Found There’, is taken from a collection of essays by Adrienne Rich, in which she talks about the intersections of poetry and politics. An important part of my work is premised on the possibility of translating political notions within abstract(ed), formal language. Most of these pieces were developed during two artist residencies at La Curtiduria, Oaxaca, Mexico, and in New York in my studio. In Mexico I worked with a weaver from Teotiltan del Valle, a village 30km from Oaxaca, to produce felt, later assembled in sculptural pieces. The pieces develop through accumulated and contradictory pressures: pressures of gravity, of context, of the body, of will, of desire. Working between Mexico and New York, teaching in Baltimore, I am forced to adapt to different rhythms, materials and contexts. I opt for unplanned gestures and accept a meandering, wandering course. Doubt is an intuitive self-discipline: a type of speculation and an acceptance of fallibility rather than a form of mistrust. Uncertainty is productive. I choose materials that allow me to consider the visible through the tactile, and vice-versa. They tend to have an indistinct, malleable structure. This has a political dimension. Felt, for instance, is non-hierarchical: no part has a specialized role, dominates or leads. Paint is also liminal. It is fluid and solid, simultaneously matter and illusion. The importance of fluidity, irresolution, the body, and the sense of touch in my work reflect an approach to making that is indebted to feminist thought and art practice.”

Fabienne will be the 15th artist to participate in Gallery Diet’s invitational series of programming which brings artist from around the world into Miami for solo and two-person exhibitions. Previous artist in the series have included Graham Hudson, JJ PEET, Kristopher Benedict, Empfangshalle, Bridget Baker, and various others. In addition to the invitational series, Diet represents five emerging artists including Charley Friedman, Christy Gast, Richard Höglund, Abby Manock, and Daniel Milewski.

The gallery is open Tuesday thru Saturday 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., on the Second Saturday art walk from 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. and on the last Thursday of the month from 11 a.m. – 8 p.m.

Babes & Blogs From Manhattan to Havana
New Light Foundation and Krane, Inc Present Two Islands: The Jewish Nun and Island Blogosphere
PREMIERING IN MIAMI BEFORE GOING TO NYC AND SCOTLAND

Wendy White of the New Light Foundation, Inc. www.newlightgallery.org and Vanessa Garcia of The Krane, Inc. www.thekrane.com are proud to present a performance of their new play Two Islands consisting of two one-acts entitled Island Blogosphere and The Jewish Nun.

From the time of the Odyssey, writers have been exploring the idea of the “island” in relation to humanity. Here, we have two contemporary playwrights using an age-old technique in a new world. The two pieces (The Jewish Nun by Wendy White and Island Blogosphere by Vanessa Garcia) are connected by a walking bridge that the directors will take the audience across, so to speak.

These plays show the worlds of one Jewish-American woman; one Cuban-American. These two shows are the stories of culture clashes; the world of outsiders; and the women who strive to find themselves as they delve into the pulsing life of the two particular islands that made them: Manhattan & Cuba.

In Island Blogosphere, two sisters virtually befriend Cuban bloggers, when they are not permitted to enter the island physically due to politics and family conflicts.

In The Jewish Nun, a nineteen year old girl moves from celibacy to free-love, juxtaposing the racy lifestyle of NYC and Manhattan against a self-imposed purity.

More information about the writers and directors can be found on their websites: www.vanessagarcia.org and www.newlightgallery.org.

In 2009, New Light Foundation, Inc. represented the United States as Art ambassadors by the 1-2-3 Kinderlachen e.V. foundation of Rottenburg, Germany by hosting the international “Global Gallery” project (www.123kinderlachen.org). During the course of this important project, the “world’s biggest canvas” emerged; painted by children – transcending all borders and conflicts.

Krane, Inc. was named Best of the City 2010 by Miami Magazine, as the best up and coming theatre company in town. http://vanessagarcia.org/press/theatrical-chairs.php

Together, New Light Foundation, and Krane, inc. have won numerous awards around the globe, have performed everywhere from Amsterdam to Arkansas; from Miami to New York City; and have tackled subjects related to women, love, politics, and Shakespeare. Here are two companies that push the envelope with every production.

Two Islands has an exciting road ahead as it will show in New York at 59e59 (www.59e59.org) and, later this summer, have its international debut at the upcoming Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland this August 2010.

The proceeds raised from the Miami Performance will go towards getting the troupe to Scotland; covering the actors’ travel expenses and their stay in Scotland as they represent the United States, and South Florida specifically.

“Two Islands is truly a dream come true – an opportunity to explore a lifetime of romantic temptations and transform it all to the written word – it is truly an honor and a constant source of inspiration to share this creative adventure with the very talented playwright and artist, Vanessa Garcia and our charismatic actors Casey Dressler and Nicole Garcia – what a dynamic team we are!” says Wendy White, Playwright, Director and President of the New Light Foundation, Inc.

“I feel like taking theatre to the global level is part of our mission, starting at home, and moving abroad really showcases what’s here in Miami to the world. It’s important. It’s also important because it creates an exchange. I’m sure we’ll meet people abroad that we can then bring to Miami to further culturally infuse the local community – what we’re doing is starting a conversation,” says Vanessa Garcia, Founding Director of The Krane, Inc.

Weird Miami Artist-Led Bus Tours
July 18, August 15, & September 19

Weird Miami is the chance to ditch our jaded views of Miami and become “tourists in the ‘weird’ pockets in our own city.” – Adler Guerrier

There is a much more interesting — sometimes dark — and never boring side to Miami, one only known to the people who inhabit this town. For any Miamian a typical day’s experiences could range from strange to the swampy sublime. Is there any such thing as “Flori-duh?” It is only when one accepts the city in all its glorious weirdness that one can unearth the cracked and quirky gems that lie hidden within.

The artists, both Miamians and non-natives, consider their experiences with people they have come across, through mysterious topographies they have discovered, and objects they have excavated or exhumed, as a way to make sense of or share their unique findings. Exhibition is free and open to the public.

Visitor’s Center Artists:
Autumn Casey | Alyse Emdur | Adler Guerrier | Jason Hedges
Nicolas Lobo & Kenneth Andrew Mroczek | Justin Long | Isabel Moros | Peggy Nolan

“Solely Responsible” is the most recent of Yamel Molerio’s evolving works. His solo exhibition is a combination of art styles and includes various materials. Molerio draws his inspiration from Renaissance style as well as the simplicity of a child’s doodle. His style blends these disparate concepts into the development of each piece. Conceptually, his combination is a reflection of our cultures, customs, ideas, races and times. In particular, ‘appropriation’ plays a large role in Molerio’s creative process.
In his words:
As an artist, I am the creator of this visual world.
As the creator, there should be no rules because the creator makes his own rules.
I am solely responsible for creating this world. I am also solely responsible for mistakes and bad decisions that I’ve made in the past and for my success.

“Accept responsibility for your life. Know that it is you who will get you where you want to go, no one else. If you take responsibility for yourself you will develop a hunger to accomplish your dreams.”

Neal Rosenthal :: Under the Radar Winemakers and the Indigenous Grapes of Italy

In its best and purest form wine must reflect a specific sense of place. Neal Rosenthal brings to the market distinctive wines that reflect this devotion to the concept of “terroir”.

“The role of the winemaker is to render the fundamental character of the wine in its most clear and precise form so that it speaks to us of its geographical origin, its birthplace as it were, and the special conditions obtained in the particular vintage… An overwhelming percentage of wine made today refers only to where it wants to be – not from where it comes.”

This Thursday, taste the terroir of Umbria and Valle d’Aosta in these outstanding selections from The Mad Rose Group.

The Frost Art Museum Presents
Meet & Mingle with artist Philippe Dodard

Earthquake 01.12.10 by Philippe Dodard

(Miami, FL – July 13, 2010)- Come Meet and Mingle with Haitian native Philippe Dodard, a contemporary artist of the Caribbean and the African Diaspora, on Wednesday, July 28th, 2010 at 6 p.m. at The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum located at 10975 SW 17 Street, Miami, FL 33199. The event is free and open to the public.

Dodard will speak about his works during this new summer lecture series at The Frost. Dodard enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts, where he founded a studio for audiovisual graphic arts. His art combines Haitian, Caribbean and African elements to portray his themes of man’s journey through life. He blends painting, sculpture, drawing, words and sounds in his works to express the love that he finds in every human being.

Complementary academic trainings followed, first at the Academy of Fine Arts of Port-au-Prince and then the International School of Bordeaux, France provided the basics inherent to this field. But unlike most of his contemporaries who moved directly to art creation, Dodard engaged in a quest for a deeper knowledge of the human-spiritual. His pursuit, took him first to the Ashram at the top of the mountains surrounding Port-au-Prince and later to the iconographies of the Arawak, Taïno and African masks. He knew the challenges would be to create an art that awakens rather than satisfies the mundane desires of the clientele, an art which embodies different answers to our seemingly irresolvable human problems, which found particular articulation at a different moment in our history.

This lecture is co-sponsored by the Latin American and Caribbean Center (LACC) at Florida International University and part of LACC’s 13th Annual Haitian Summer Institute. Philippe Dodard is represented by Michele Frisch of Galerie Marassa (http:// galeriemarassa.com)

Dimensions Variable Presents Yellow and Gold Felicia Chizuko Carlisle 7/10/10

Dimensions Variable Presents
Yellow and Gold- Felicia Chizuko Carlisle
JULY 10 – AUGUST 14, 2010
RECEPTION SATURDAY, JULY 10, 2010, 7 – 11 PM
Dimensions Variable
171 NE 38th Street, Design District, Miami, Florida

Yellow and Gold, a solo project by Felecia Chizuko Carlisle , is an experiment with sound, spatiality and synesthesia. This sculptural installation addresses questions regarding the relations between sound, built space and the virtual space inside the mind. What shapes, colors, and/or images do particular sounds produce between the ears? In turn, how does the shape of a space determine audience perception of sound, light, and their own physical presence? The title, Yellow and Gold, intends to force a shift between language and meaning by associating loaded words with new formal constructs.
Felecia Chizuko Carlisle, a native Floridian, received her MFA in New Genres from San Francisco Art Institute, in 2006. She has explored a variety of contexts for her work including television in Madrid, Spain, and Moab, Utah; nightclubs such as The Golden Pudel Club in Hamburg, Germany, 1015 Folsom in San Francisco, The Honey Pot in Tampa, FL and has shown in various national and international galleries, museums and public spaces. Her research in art focuses on the complex relationship between real and virtual space and navigates the distances between the two. Her work draws from and combines multiple disciplines such as performance, installation, sound, design and architecture, sculpture and photography. Her most recent work explores dissonance through manipulations of sound, image, space, time, context and audience, highlighting process both as a means and an end. Carlisle currently maintains a studio in the Wynwood Arts District of Miami, FL.

Dimensions Variable is an exhibition space in the Miami Design District interested in innovative new projects in contemporary art.
The intention behind Dimensions Variable is to feature projects by individual artists and collaborative projects. Rather than showcasing group or solo exhibitions in the usual format, we are interested in challenging individuals or collaborative artists to address our space specifically and produce one cohesive project. Dimensions Variable aspires to provide a forum for the introduction of unfamiliar, complex, collaborative and multidisciplinary practices to a Miami audience. www.dimensionsvariable.net

Annette Recommends Rik Rak Salon, Boutique & Bar

I have to say that you can find the best places to eat in the most unlikely places.  Rik Rak is a upscale full service salon with a little cafe.  They serve beer, wine, Prosecco, pasta, sandwiches and a lot more.  I ordered the tomato basil soup with a grilled cheese sandwich with tomato.  This was the best tomato basil soup I have ever had, the chef  makes it fresh everyday and what a difference it makes.

I just can’t give it enough praise you just need to go order it.  The grilled cheese was a gourmet grilled cheese with tomato and it was the yummiest grilled cheese I think I have ever had.  I had a Bellini with my meal, which topped the meal off perfectly.  The service was outstanding, the chef’, his name is Andrew, was so nice and made everything to order. I will be going back again and again.  They also serve breakfast,  I am going to make a point of making my way over to Brickell some morning to try it.

July 24, 2010 11:00-2:00pm

We live in a time of progress and rapid change. Consequently, we prefer to define ourselves in terms of where we are going, not where we come from. We have grown disconnected with our ancestors because we believe that they lived in times so different from our own that they are incapable of shedding light on our current experiences. Many of us have grown so indifferent with the past that we have convinced ourselves that history does not matter.

But history does matter. It has been said that he who controls the past controls the future. Our view of history shapes the way we view the present, and therefore it dictates what answers we offer for existing problems. This understanding of the connection between the past, present and future can be found by the Akan people of West Africa in concept they called Sankofa. It literally expresses that, “it is not taboo to go back and fetch what you forgot.” Sankofa teaches us that we should reach back and gather the best of what our past has to teach us, so that we can achieve our full potential as we move forward.

History can be used to propagate hatred and re-cultivate old racial, religious and ethnic tensions; or it can be used to unify people. It was knowledge of this in some older African societies, which encouraged them to put the repository of history into the hands of responsible, trained individuals called griots. The griots is a chronicler of history and the guardian of the knowledge of his people’s ancestry, or genealogy.

The Sankofa Experience will occur at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center from June to July 2010. The Sankofa Project is a fusion of the concept of Sankofa and the work of the griots, in this case, the artist Nzingah is the mediator. In the journey to retrieve that which was forgotten Nzingah has created a series entitled, “Beyond Black: The Proverb Series.” It consists of portraits of people of African descent that the artist connected to specific African Proverbs. An exhibition of the series will occur from June 7 to July 30, 2010 at the gallery at AARLC.

On July 10, 2010, there will be an opening reception during which Nzingah will have a spoken word performance entitled, “Sankofa’s Child” in the library’s auditorium. “Sankofa’s Child,” is a personal and communal journey through the Sankofa process. In addition to the exhibit, there will be a workshop series during the month of July in Adinkra stamping, a printing process of the Ashanti people of Ghana. Participants will create their own personalized Adinkra cloth, in addition to learning some Adinkra symbols that represent popular proverbs and maxims.

Invitation Manny Verdecia Expressions of Avignon at Zu Galeria 7/9/10

Zu Galeria Fine Arts and Manny Verdecia cordially invite you to opening night for his exhibit Expressions of Avignon
July 9, 8pm to 11pm
Zu Galeria Fine Arts
2248 SW 8th Street
Miami, Fl 33135
www.zugaleria.blogspot.com

Exhibit will run until August 2

Manny Verdecia was born in Havana in 1962. In 1992 he graduated from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with a degree in fashion photography. Since an early age, Manny was lured to the power of the image and the spontaneous representation of reality that his curious lens would later capture. Through the years, he has worked with several models and acting
agencies, but he has channeled his passion mostly in pursuit of that unique split second in which people reveal their true selves at fleeting, ephemeral moments of their everyday life.

This is exactly what “Expressions of Avignon” is about. In this exhibit, Manny illustrates a summer he spent in that provençale town in the South of
France, a magic city where popes once lived and where his keen camera registered the candid human expressions and gestures of popular artists on its streets.

Prometeo Theatre part of the Florida Center for the Literary Arts at Miami Dade College (MDC) will present the premiere of a Spanish version of “Filo al Fuego” (“Blade to the Heat”) by Mexican-American playwright, Oliver Mayer. Author of more than 20 plays, Mayer is the winner of the Zumberge Individual Award and an Associate Professor of Dramatic Writing at the University of Southern California School of Theatre.

Prometeo’s Artistic Director, Joann Maria Yarrow, directs this world premiere. “We have been blessed to be able have the assistance of amazing trainers who have been working with our actors.” Yarrow noted. “The play is set in Miami and the world of boxing in 1962. Revolt, refugees and world champs bang around this town like nobody’s business; a hotbed of political activity and a Mecca for the sport at the time,”

“Filo al Fuego” is about the essentiality of finding yourself, identifying yourself independent of the way others might identify you,” says playwright Oliver Mayer. “It’s funny that the play remains so edgy and advanced in terms of its portrayal of gay characters.” Filo al Fuego is not for the faint-hearted. It deals with sexuality, race and ethnicity without pulling any punches; it dives head first into territory that others either tread lightly or avoid entirely.

His original and highly controversial hit play Blade to the Heat, on which this new adaptation is based, premiered at the New York Public Theatre in 1994, followed by a revised version at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles. It has since played in many other venues and cities including Chicago, San Francisco and Mexico City — where it played 100 performances, earning a plaque at the renowned Teatro Lírico.

“Filo al Fuego of course shares the story, pace and theme with Blade to the Heat, but something about the work we did [for this adaptation] makes it more than a simple translation,” Mayer said. “The very terrain and temperature of South Florida has invaded the play in sexy and sultry ways.”

The performance is part of the XXV International Hispanic Theatre Festival, presented by Teatro Avante and American Airlines.

Locust Projects presents The LAB Locust Arts Builders opening reception 7/10/10

MIAMI ART SCENE PIONEER, LOCUST PROJECTS, ANNOUNCES A COLLABORATIVE EXHIBITION BY SOUTH FLORIDA HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

The LAB (Locust Arts Builders)
Opening Reception: Saturday, July 10, 7-10pm
Through August 2010

Pioneers in the Miami art scene, Locust Projects is pleased to announce a collaborative exhibition by a select group of South Florida High School students. Under the direction of renowned contemporary artist Monica Lopez de Victoria of the TM Sisters, nine local high school students will experience the invigorating and arduous process of conceiving and executing original artworks from June 28 to July 10, 2010.

These students, currently attending Design and Architecture Senior High, Hialeah Senior High, Miami Northwestern Senior High and New World School of Arts answered an open call and were hand-selected by a committee of local art professionals.

Participating Artists: Omar Alvarez, Leslie Chavez, Jason Flores, Luna Goldberg, Kevin Hobbs, Ximena Izquierdo, Vanessa Lacayo, Asher Mones, Christina Quinlan

As a hallmark that makes Locust Projects stand out from other art venues, the organization embraces cutting-edge exhibitions and innovation in art. In furtherance of the not-for-profit’s twelve-year commitment to providing an approachable arts venue for the South Florida community, for the first time, Locust Projects has created an exciting new program in which a young generation of artists are given the opportunity to create a collaborative exhibition in a public venue.

The project will be developed and exhibited in Locust Projects’ 2,700 square foot space in Miami’s Design District and culminate in a publicized show, open to the public. The goal is to promote contemporary art and project-based learning as a means to encourage creativity, critical analysis, and problem solving, while building communication skills. This unique initiative will allow young artists to learn the practical and exciting aspects of creating a public exhibition in collaboration with their peers.

2010 marks Locust Projects’ 12-year anniversary. Locust Projects is alternative, not for profit exhibition space dedicated to providing contemporary visual artists the freedom to experiment with new ideas without the pressures of gallery sales or limitations of conventional exhibition spaces. Artists are encouraged to create site-specific installations as an extension of their representative work and Locust Projects offers them a vibrant Miami experience to develop their ideas and methods. Locust Projects is committed to offering an approachable and inviting venue for the Miami and international art community to experience the work and meet the artists. With more than 65 exhibitions, representing more than 210 local, national, and international artists, Locust Projects has supported site-specific and installation artworks featuring photography, video, performance, sculpture, drawing, painting and digital media making it a nationally-recognized art institution, and a landmark in the Miami art scene.

Monica Lopez De Victoria is a Miami-based artist that works in collaboration with Tasha Lopez De Victoria under the name TM Sisters. Together the sisters work in the mediums of video, digital video performance, VJing, collage, social experiments, zines, clothing, installations, and interactive video created along with their brother Samuel. The TM Sisters’ recent exhibition, WHIRL CRASH GO! at Locust Projects was featured in The Miami Herald. The sisters’ work has been included in the international traveling exhibition “Uncertain States of America: American Art in the 3rd Millennium;” the Second Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art, and PERFORMA 07 in New York. Space, Art and Love. What are they and are they connected? Niki Lopez is mounting a visual art exhibition and will attempted to explore the inter-connective relationship of the three.
The exhibition will showcase paintings, photographs and prints that embrace the elements of the theme “Space, Art, Love.” Many of Lopez’s work has ‘extra-terrestrial connotations as it is a subject she seeks understanding about, “It is arrogant for us to believe that out of all the universes and planets of those universes, that man on earth is the only intelligent being”. Each of her pieces explores different theories, tells a story or asks a question, which amongst other things, compel us to explore outside of the ‘box’.
Other artists in this exhibition include Luzalma Gonzalez, Kazilla, Klodi Lemoine, Tabatha Mudra, David I. Muir, Laura Peterson, Michael A. Clark, and Sharon Swift- who will be displaying photography in collaboration with the Broward Center of Performing Arts’ ‘Flamenco in the Sun’.
Hosting the opening night will be poet Renda Writer of WeMerge Talent Magazine and will include performances by Spoken Word poet Jashua Sa-Ra and the cast of Drag It Out. After party music will be spun by DJ One Star.
The month long event will feature different themes each Saturday between July 24 and August 14. These will include fund-raisers, workshops, Erik Proulx’s movie “Lemonade” and guest speaker Jim Shermer of the Broward Cultural Division (check website for more).
Opening night’s refreshments provided by Be Organic and ‘café con leche’ by Underground Coffeehaus.
The exhibition will raise funds for The Cooperative Feeding Program,
while food items will be collected on behalf of the RENMEN Foundation
which supports a Haitian children’s orphanage.

CALIX GUSTAV GALLERY DEBUTS NEW EXHIBIT THE PASSING
Wynwood cutting-edge gallery exhibits the fleeting of time, new seasons and new beginnings representing rebirth

Calix Gustav Gallery will debut its newest exhibit The Passing on Saturday, July 10, 2010 from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. with an opening reception and complimentary cocktails for all guests. The exhibition’s reception will take place at the gallery located in the Wynwood Arts District (98 NW 29th Street) and will coincide with the bourgeoning neighborhood’s monthly art walk.

Calix Gustav’s The Passing exhibits the fleeting of time, new seasons and new beginnings representing rebirth. This resurgence is only accomplished with the understanding of life; its meaning and its hardships. Ecuadorian-born artist, Jovan Karlo Villalba creates cinematic paintings featuring visions of sweeping cataclysmic events. The increasing threat of man-made devastation in forms of biological and nuclear warfare, environmental catastrophe and economic ruin, in conjunction with their magnified portrayal in the media, has created an onslaught of social alarm and has subversively woven feelings of doom into the fabric of present-day life in America.

Colombian-born artist, Catalina Jaramillo creates an installation that deals with issues raised upon both separation from her partner and her mother’s death. The installation celebrates the obsessive tendencies that some manifest with their loss and grief, it is an accumulation of the memories and objects left behind at times of loss. In reviving those who we’ve lost we learn to accept life’s realities and thus, learn to move on and accept our destiny. The installation will combine aspects of performance art, video, photography, and sculpture.

Sculptor Richard Herzog examines parts of society and nature trying to bring awareness to these elements hoping to alter the viewer’s perceptions and make them look at things differently and consider the world they live in. The sculptures are a combination of a systematic organization of natural forms possessing a chaotic multi-layered visual effect mimicking our world, dominated by its rapid pace and over stimulation.

The Passing will run from July 10 through September 1, 2010. Regular gallery visiting hours are from Tuesday to Saturday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. For more information visit www.calixgustav.com.

Photographs from Social Media Day in Miami at The Pelican Hotel on 6/30/10

Social Media Day in Miami at The Pelican Hotel on Wednesday, June 30, 2010. MIAMI edition presented by Mashable.com & The brpr Group for the Miami sect. This was a celebration for those Miami social media mavens!

Social Media Day – MIAMI edition presented by Mashable.com & The brpr Group
Last night was an epic celebration of everything Social Media, and our Miami festivities were the biggest in the southeast (and bigger than LA). Miamians have once again proven their digital prowess as over 100 Social Media aficionados “checked-in” to The Pelican Hotel and Restaurant on Ocean Drive, giving a whole new, flesh and bones meaning to the term Social Networking Site.

Social Media Day, or #SMDAY as we call it in the biz, is the creation of Mashable and Meetup was the HQ, calling upon each city’s Social Media Mavens and Maestros to organize their own observance as Pete Cashmore, CEO of Mashable explains, “I see social media day as the beginning. We would like you to use this platform to continue to organize regular Meetups in your area.”

The brpr Group was thrilled to answer the calling of the all-mighty Mashable as Agency Director, Christopher Renz, raves, “Being a part of the first ever Social Media Day is like being present for the first ever Valentine’s Day or St. Patrick’s Day. Ok, maybe not exactly the same, but it is huge — especially being on the ground and knowing how fast Social Media is growing. It was an honor for us at The brpr Group to be able to work with Mashable and we are very happy to help position Miami at the forefront of the revolution.”

SocialBuzzTV and USTREAM were large contributors, documenting this first ever Social Media Day extravaganza for the ages. Live streaming for nationwide bragging rights and an incredible postcelebration recap, already a YouTube sensation among those in the know, made Miami’s #SMDAY so much more than a “trending topic” on Twitter. Miami’s village voices were in full effect with The
Miami New Times, Soul of Miami, BizBash, and Miami Magazine, to name a few, as they bore witness to digital history in the making.

“If you’re in the business of Social Media, it’s really ‘Social Media Day’ everyday,” says Jennifer Batchelor, Social Media Curator for The brpr Group, “What makes today and this #SMDay celebration so special is the free bubbly with “check-in”. I mean, who doesn’t want to drink up while you Tweetup? But all Social Media nerd jokes aside, we are so grateful to the city of Miami and to Mashable for allowing us the opportunity to organize this gathering and celebrate the new school 2.0 tomfoolery with the finest digital media dynamos, community managers, and SMO pros in the industry.”

Jean Claude Rigarde meet the artist at Frost 7/12/10

Jean Claude Rigaud: Meet the Artist

The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum
Florida International University
Maidique Campus
10975 SW 17th St.
Miami, Florida 33199
thefrost.fiu.edu

Join us for Rigaud’s lecture on July 12, 2010 which will focus on his art, “past, present and future.” He will discuss his upbringing in Haiti and how he ventured off to many parts of the world to learn from master sculptors including French sculptor, Olivier Seguin. He studied art and engineering in Mexico and New York. At Columbia University, he studied marble, carving and art history. He worked as an engineer in New York City, then later became a full-time artist.

Rigaud’s sculptures are abstract, geometric forms drawn in space, with smooth and polished surfaces inspired by Alexander Calder, Brancusi, Archipenko and David Smith. Rigaud is concerned with space and form. The open areas become an integral part of the composition, as important as the enclosing line. “In my sculptures, the negative space has form, has volume,” explains Rigaud.

He now lives and works in Miami.

THE GENERAL (1926, US, Buster Keaton, 75 minutes, b&w, DVD)—Consistently ranked among the greatest films ever made, Buster Keaton’s The General is so brilliantly conceived and executed that it continues to inspire awe and laughter with every viewing. Rejected by the Confederate army as unfit and taken for a coward by his beloved Annabelle Lee, young Johnnie Gray sets out to single-handedly win the war with the help of his cherished locomotive. What follows is, without exaggeration, probably the most cleverly choreographed comedy ever recorded on celluloid. The Dynamo Café will also offer 2-for-1 beer and wine from 6-9pm on Dyno’Nites, especially designed as a venue for the local community to present their talent and knowledge. artist statement:
“I follow a basic protocol when approaching the collage or an abstract painting: first the palette… then design format and composition ensue. My art reflects my experience of living in a multi-dimensional/media world, hi-speed communication and travel; and a heightened awareness of infinite possibilities. I also use recycled materials, which are found in abundance, and find the results to be of divine inspiration.

My goal is to teach children and adults who have no idea they have the ability to create beautiful, expressive art. I enjoy the one-on-one experience and thrive as a witness to the unfolding joy of each persons’ discovery of their own unique experience….that will sustain the bridge.”

STFU! This is a Library 7/2,9,16/10

STFU! This is a Library
July 2, 9, & 16, 8:30pm
Roxy Performing Arts Center
1645 SW 107th Ave.
Miami, FL 33165

An All-New Sketch & Improv Show from South Florida’s Premiere Comedy Company

Instead of heading to the movies this weekend, why not cuddle up with a good book? Wait. Scratch that. Instead of cuddling up with a good book this weekend, why not head to Impromedy’s all-new sketch and improv comedy show STFU! This is a Library at the Roxy Performing Arts Center?

STFU! is a unique and uproariously funny blend of original sketch (think Saturday Night Live, Mad TV) and improv (think Who’s Line is it Anyway?) comedy by South Florida’s top improv performers. So what is improv comedy? It’s comedy made up right before your very eyes. No scripts, no memorized dialogue, no rehearsed scenes: just crazy ideas, tons of energy, and your suggestions. No audience, no funny!

Watch in amazement as Impromedy players (who have trained at The Second City, Upright Citizens Brigade, and Improv Olympic) bring audience suggestions to life on stage and answer their most burning literary queries, like, “What would happen if Green Eggs and Ham was an action movie?” STFU! takes audience members on a hysterical tour of the library, if your librarians were Tina Fey and Dane Cook.

So, if you wish you read the classics in high school instead of picking up the Cliff Notes… Or if you hate it when your boss references famous literary characters that go right over your head (“Son, you remind me of a young Captain Ahab.”)… Or if your personal library consists solely of the film adaptations of Nicholas Sparks’ novels… Don’t miss STFU! This is a Library!* We can’t promise you’ll learn anything, but you sure will have fun!

*STFU! This is a Library is not a legitimate alternative to summer school/SAT prep classes/or reading the newspaper.

Get Your Head Out of the Clouds Art Exhibit 7/3/10

“Get Your Head Out of the Clouds” Art Exhibit

RODEZart.com Gallery
CocoWalk

Coconut Grove, FL 33133

“Get Your Head Out of the Clouds: a visual voyage through the artist’s mind and creative process.”

Join us on Saturday, July 3, 2010, during Coconut Grove Gallery Night from 7 to 10 pm.

RODEZart.com Gallery presents George Rodez’s impressionistic/expressionistic works of art from his Elements & Values series and Mari Sanchez’s torsos and image sculptures chiseled from such stones as Alabaster and Soapstone.

For Rodez, this series breaks all boundaries, traditions, and rules to produce what is purely an expression of freedom for the artist. Rodez states, “In this body of work I have no influence or respect for light, shadow, dimension, perspective or proportion, but rather I allow myself to be led by the images seen in the abstractions no matter how they turn out. While some of these can be quite beautiful, some on the other hand can turn out to be quite monstrous. The art takes on a life of its own.”

In a manner similar to how images can be found in clouds, Rodez without any preconceived notions of what color, texture, or its end result, mixes his acrylic paints with free abandonment to first create what appears to be an abstract work of art. Then by exploring the abstract from all sides and angles and visualizing through his imagination and ability amongst the chaos of color, he finds images that only he as the artist can find and creates a work of art that is then recognizable to the viewer.

On gallery night Rodez will demonstrate how he paints this series, transforming an abstract work of art to a figurative one.

For Sanchez, this work represents a life-time passion. Her sculptures are inspired by nature, people, and the things we surround ourselves with. Sanchez states, “I carve stone and bring forth an aesthetically and emotionally pleasing figurative object from what appeared to be a chunk of rock. It is this process of exploration and discovery, the revelation of form and substance through the continuous removal of materials, that is so satisfying. However, in the process I interact deeply with each of my sculptures and in the end they are the ones that tell me what they want to become.”

The exhibit will be on view from July 3 – 31, 2010. Gallery hours are Sunday through Thursday, 11am to 7pm, and Friday & Saturday, 11am to 10pm. For more information, please call 786-543-7237 or 786-467-7111.

“[…]Cernuda presents us with the retrospective Tomás Sánchez in Focus, displaying 13 representational works of the artist, wisely selected and which allow us to delve into what Gerardo Mosquera has referred to as “his landscape mysticism”…” Joaquín Badajoz, art critic
Tomás Sánchez o la Reinvención del Paisaje, El Nuevo Herald, Artes y Letras, Sunday, June 20, 2010

“Beautifying a natural landscape is impossible; reinterpreting it is a matter of virtue… A crossroads that Tomás Sánchez must encounter each time he stands in front of the easel with a paintbrush in hand. Photographs of Hands Across the Sand on Miami Beach on 6/26/10

Hands Across the Sand on Miami Beach was held Saturday Morning, June 26, 2010.  Surfrider Foundation, the Sierra Club, Greenpeace, Environment Florida, 1Sky, ECOMB, and the Urban Paradise Guild for Hands Across the Sand – a global day of action to say NO to offshore drilling and YES to clean energy!  Millions of people joined hands on thousands of beaches around the world to draw a literal and figurative line in the sand protecting our coasts from any more oil disasters! The only way to ensure we never again see another Deepwater Horizon is to once and for all become free of our dependence on fossil fuels. The obstacles to this are not technical, or economic – they are political. Join us in sending a message loud and clear that we demand our leaders ban all new offshore drilling and start the clean energy revolution today!

Red Bull Flugtag Miami 7/10/10

Bayfront Park
July 10, 2010
Gates open: 10:00AM
First Flight: 12:00PM
Last Flight: 2:30PM
No tickets required. Red Bull Flugtag is a free event and open to the public.

Red Bull Flugtag, which means “flying day” in German, is a competition that dares both the brave and the brainy to design, build and pilot homemade flying machines off a 30-foot high ramp in hopes of achieving human-powered flight. But don’t be fooled – this is no ordinary flying competition. While distance is important, creativity and showmanship are necessary to impress the judges. These criteria have inspired such outrageous crafts as a sky-high Popemobile, an airborne outhouse, a flying fire engine, and even a replica of Santa and his sleigh to test their wings at Red Bull Flugtag.

RED BULL FLUGTAG MIAMI FLIGHT MANIFESTO COMPLETE
38 Teams to Take the Plunge into Biscayne Bay on July 10 th at Bayfront Park

MIAMI – May 6, 2010 – Teams from across the east coast look to defy gravity with their human-powered flying machines on July 10th at Red Bull Flugtag Miami. After reviewing more than 270 applications, 38 teams received their boarding passes to participate in the outrageous flying competition hosted at Bayfront Park. Selected flyers like Team American Muscle, Save Salad Toss Pizza and Das Jorts, will entertain the crowd as they launch their crafts with hopes of soaring across the bay.

If your German is a bit rusty, Flugtag means “flying day.” Each team of daredevils will launch from 30 feet above Biscayne Bay at Bayfront Park and attempt to take flight in their homemade crafts. The panel of celebrity judges will take three criteria into account in deciding who makes the podium: distance flown, creativity of the craft and the team’s showmanship on stage. Spectators will also have the opportunity to chime in for their favorite team via SMS voting to select the People’s Choice.

JAMAICAN BOBSLED, RUBBER DUCKY

Red Bull Flugtag Miami will have 38 outrageous crafts, ranging from flying squirrels, a giant guitar and a three tiered wedding cake topped with a bride and groom, built by participants ranging from pilots to engineering students and animators to roller derby girls. Each team of five will need to bring out their inner stuntman and sheer silliness in order to make a splash against a wide array of talent.

While the sky may be the limit on creativity, there are still a few flight regulations. First off, all flying machines must be entirely human-powered (no external energy sources or stored power, so forget about the slingshots, catapults or anything besides your own burliness). Second, no matter what they say, size does matter – all crafts must be less than 30 feet wide and must weigh no more than 450 lbs. (including the pilot).

PREPARE FOR TAKE OFF

For Flugtag novices, the first Red Bull Flugtag took off in Vienna, Austria in 1991 and has since visited more than 30 countries around the world attracting crowds of up to 300,000. Currently, 195 feet stands as the farthest flight which was set back in 2000 in Austria, but the US isn’t far behind with a record of 155 feet set in 2007 in Nashville, Tenn.! Miami will host the first 2010 Red Bull Flugtag in the US followed by the Twin Cities, MN, Long Beach, CA and Philadelphia, PA.

Red Bull Flugtag is a free event and open to the public. Gates open at 10:00am and the first craft launches for flight at 12:00pm.

Cremata Gallery Annual Summer Exhibition 6/25/10

Cremata Gallery’s “Annual Summer Exhibition”
June 1st – June 30th 2010
Gallery Night – Last Friday of the month – June 25th, 2010 / 7:00pm – 10:00pm
Show Dates: June 1st – 30th , 2010
Cremata Gallery – 1646 SW 8th Street, Miami FL 33135
www.crematagallery.com

Cremata Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of its annual Summer Exhibition that will be featuring various artists that have been with the gallery since its inception and others that have joined it recently, such as Enrique Toledo.

The exhibition comprises 40 works including paintings, drawings and sculptures. This exposition does not attempt to follow a rigorous chronological or thematic order; instead, it prefers to emphasize an eclectic selection of pieces by established masters, that are highly valued, as well as younger artists with promising careers. The result is a unique and eclectic show, entirely contrary to delimited chronologies and rigorous themes. The joy of the Summer Exhibition always comes from unexpected juxtapositions, not from the pairing of like with like, allowing the eye and imagination freedom, not telling you what you ought to admire or notice.

On this occasion, Cremata Gallery will feature Cuban artist Enrique Toledo (Santa Clara, 1966), who inaugurates his first exhibition in Miami. Toledo, whose work evidences magnificent technical skills, has developed a prolific pictorial portfolio based on famous works in the history of art, which he then recontextualizes in the present adding everyday elements to them. To view his oeuvre, is to make a ludic journey through the paintings of Lucas Cranach, Hans Holbein, Rafael Sanzio, among many other masters. The personages in his paintings radiate an enigmatic magnetism, inviting the spectator to penetrate the work beyond mere contemplation. Enrique Toledo boasts a productive career with more than 40 expositions in his native Cuba, Mexico, Portugal and the United States.

Around this time he kept on performing for two years with the New Cuban Quartet all over the world. By the end of 2007 his first solo album “Dimensions”, recorded in Brazil, was released. This project incorporates his Afro-Cuban roots with strong influences of Jazz and Brazilian music. “I can assure you no other place in the world deserves my solo debut more. Key West Weekend Getaway and Sky Diving adventure 8/13-15/10

Key West Weekend Getaway & Sky Diving adventure
August 13-15, 2010,
Key West, Fl.
Facebook Event Page.

Depending on the number of people coming on the trip, we will be chartering a 30 or 50 passenger bus. Estimated transportation cost will be under $50/pp for the round-trip. As soon as we know if we need a 30 or 50 passenger bus, we will be able to provide the exact cost of the transportation per person.

You do not have to go sky diving, but it is an activity we are planning for those who do want to go. We currently have 2 proposals from hotels close to Duval street that can accommodate our group.

The Pier House Resort has offered us a $229 nightly rate for their Lenai Rooms. The rates for that weekend are usually $254/ night. Each Lenai room has a balcony and pool view. They can have either 1 king bed or 2 queen beds. The Pier House is located on Duval Street, right next to the pier, so it is extremely central to everything in Key West. If you take a room with 2 queen beds, it can accommodate up to 4 adults.

The other proposal we have is from the Best Western Hibiscus Motel which is located on the opposite end of Duval Street and is a little further from ‘all the action”. The room rates, however, are lower at $129 per night.

I am still waiting to hear back from a few other hotels to see what their pricing is, but I wanted to get this information out to everyone as soon as possible.

Anyone interested in sky diving must be over 18 y/o and weigh less than 240 lbs. A $50 non-refundable deposit will be needed to reserve your spot on the sky diving adventure. The deposit is required because the sky diving company will charge us this money if you cancel. The airplane will take 2 sky divers up at a time (plus the tandem partner). So we are not able to all go together. A spectator’s area is located at the airport where our friends can watch & wait for our safe return.

The cost per person is $245 if you pay by credit card or $225 by using cash. Video and stills are $99 per person.

We need to get an indication of how many people will be coming so we can finish making all the necessary arrangements. To reserve your place in the trip, a $50 deposit will be required for each group that is traveling. This $50 deposit is separate from the $50 deposit for sky diving.

Provisions will be made in case there is any inclement weather that prevents the trip from taking place and you will receive either a refund or the deposit will be applied to the trip for when it is rescheduled. The deposits will be processed through Paypal, so your payment is secure.

Saturday night pub crawl to celebrate our successful sky dives, Sunday return, leaving Key West by 2PM.

We will be finalizing all plans & accommodations after this event is published. Please email info@mycircles.com to get the final details and to reserve your spot on the trip. Space is subject to availability and will be on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Skydive Key West. We are a very personal Dropzone and take tremendous pride in our 100% safety record, our experience (instructors with 5000+ jumps) and our professionalism. And of course, the beautiful Florida Keys is the most gorgeous place to ever make a skydive. We are located on Sugarloaf Key, which is on mile marker 17 on US Hwy 1. That’s just 15-20 Minutes outside of Key West.
We do tandem skydives like you can see on the picture on our website SkydiveKeyWest.com everyday between 10am and sunset. After just a brief training tape, you’ll be able to experience the rush of jumping out of a ‘perfectly good airplane’ and freefall at 120 miles per hour.

of Lost Things and Missing Time
June 24 – September 19, 2010
Main Library, 2nd floor exhibition space, 101 W. Flagler Street, Miami – 305.375.2665
Reception (with Solomon Graves!): Thursday, June 24, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.

The Society for the Preservation of Lost Things and Missing Time presents objects overlooked in history’s master narrative. This special installation of photographs, archival materials, and objects documenting the odd, arcane and archaic in the State of Florida is curated by TSPLTMT’s Executive Director, Solomon Graves. The exhibition includes displays on Jacqueline Cochran, the Space Coast Polymath; the Archives of Dr. Eugene Birchwood, documenting his involvement with the Godsped Airstream Community; and brand new images of a failed city in the Okefenokee Swamp!

UPDATE: The Miami-Dade Public Library System is thrilled to announce that Solomon Graves will be present at the reception. He will be at Main Library completing exhibition-related work on a rare Miami stopover between research trips.

Our Mission is to Prevent the Loss of Fringe Thought, to keep lit the Fire of Impossibility, to find that which lay Undiscovered beneath Dust and Sediment,/ out of Sight and Forgotten./Missing time was recorded and we are witness after the fact./ Its Products Whisper to Us across Timespace./It is our Mission to Thwart the all too common Demise of Things,/ Stories, Ideas, which may not fit History’s Master Narrative./ We crave the Archaic and Arcane, the Strange, the Paranormal,/ the Outer Edge, the Little Known , those Things imbued / with Magical Properties, the Folkloric, the Homemade, the Story-told, /the Other World-ly./Left-Field.

Paredolia
Derek Buckner
June 24 – September 26, 2010
Main Library, 1st floor exhibition space
New York artist Derek Buckner works obsessively on series of paintings in which he takes on a specific subject (highway, truck, landscape), shown from a birds’ eye perspective, and explores its variation on a theme. This exhibition features one of Buckner’s latest series of oil paintings portraying images of UFOs as the dominant feature; depictions of the cityscape, buildings, and the earth are implied rather than a central figure. The dreamy yet haunting works explore the poetics of the unfamiliar and accentuate the ambiguity and psychological impact of the unknown.

Derek Buckner grew up in Brooklyn, New York. He went on to study at Vassar College and received his B.F.A. from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He has exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Italy, Mexico, East Hampton, and Sante Fe. His work is in numerous private and corporate collections in this country and abroad. This is his first solo exhibition in Miami, Fl.
Shown: Derek Buckner, UFO Sighting #2, 2009, oil on panel.

Human Rites Exhibition Opening Reception at Bass Museum 6/24/10

human rites opening reception: Thursday, June 24 – 7-9pm
Gertrude Silverstone Muss Gallery
6pm: private curator tour for upper level members ($125 and higher)
free for members, $10 for non-members

The Bass Museum of Art is pleased to present Human Rites. This exhibition examines ritual through art; and it also examines art through ritual, depending on your point of view. From mundane human activities to sacred practices, from the past through the present, rites and rituals have been pervasive subjects in artistic practice. Human Rites will present works such as 15th century devotional polychrome statues of Mary and 16th century altarpieces alongside works by renowned contemporary artists. This juxtaposition of works circumscribes the timelessness of rituals, expressed historically and anthropologically in religious, as well as other contexts.

Works of art in this exhibition also reflect both the subconscious and premeditated human need for rituals in our every day lives. Votive works by Janine Antoni and Marina Abramovich survey the ceremonial aspects of womanhood; Rirkrit Tiravanija’s Buddha figurines describe the devotional offerings that people manufacture for their gods; collected items by artists like Mark Dion, John Beech, and César Trasobares investigate form, the found object and performative aspects; Allan McCollum ‘s repetitive series’ reflect the construction of objects as substitutes for the real object. Ai Wei Wei uses the bicycle as both symbol and found object in the construction of a monumental totem form. Artists in the exhibition include: Thomas Hirschhorn, Priscilla Monge, El Anatsui, Erwin Wurm, Mark Dion, Christian Boltanski and Cesar Trasobares, and others.

Curated by Silvia Karman Cubiñá, Bass Museum of Art Executive Director and Chief Curator, and Steve Holmes, Adjunct Curator, Bass Museum of Art. This exhibition is the second of three exhibitions in The Endless Renaissance series at the Bass Museum, that began with the exhibition The Endless Renaissance in 2009 and will conclude with a publication in 2012.

Chairmans Reserve Rum / St.Lucia
Bodega Fin Del Mundo Malbec
Postales Del Fin Del Mundo Merlot
Postales Del Fin Del Mundo Malbec
Villa Diana Pinot Grigio

Chairman’s Reserve was first blended in 1999 and was overseen by the then Chairman, Laurie Barnard who conceived a quality rum which was blended using continuous and pot still rums coming on stream after ageing. Local demand has been phenomenal and the brand has expanded internationally, where the versatility of the rum makes for great cocktails.?Chairman’s Reserve recently won Gold – Best in Class at the International Wine & Spirits Competition and Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Tasting Note: Good dark brown amber colour. The pot still richness comes through on the nose with sweet honeyed fruit and spicy vanilla from the oak. The palate is balanced, with a mellow but complex mix of ripe raisin fruit, tobacco and spice. The rum has a long enjoyable finish. In St. Lucia Chairman’s reserve is best enjoyed with coconut water but can be drunk neat or with a chaser of your choice.

On 12th St. and Brickell Ave, behind Gordon Biersch, and in front of the Mellon Financial Center. We deliver!

The Soul Of Miami Stage at The Miami Music Festival 2010

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: James Echols

SOUL OF MIAMI TO SHOWCASE SOUTH FLORIDA ARTISTS AT MIAMI MUSIC FESTIVAL

(Miami, FL) June 14, 2010 – Soul Of Miami, a popular website for local events, has partnered with the Miami Music Festival. The multi-genre emerging artist festival and new music conference in South Florida taking place November 12-14, 2010 will feature a “Soul Of Miami” stage, which will showcase a selection of the area’s best independent acts.

The three-day, multi-stage event will feature acts of all genres from Florida, the U.S. and around the world. The Miami Music Festival conference for emerging artists will be held at the Hyatt Regency Miami and will offer a series of panels, master classes, workshops and interactive sessions designed to give musicians hands-on instruction and information about navigating today’s music industry.

“The Miami music scene is thriving and offers a nice mix of rock, alternative, Latin, urban, Caribbean and jazz artists. We expect to see some amazing local artists at the Soul of Miami stage,” said the festival’s CEO Irwin Kornfeld. This year’s event will showcase more than 500 performances by new and developing artists at venues throughout Miami and Miami Beach, including two daytime sessions on five stages at Bayfront Park, in addition to a show at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts.

The Soul Of Miami website (soulofmiami.org) was started by James Echols and Annette Peikert in July of 2008 to share information about fun events taking place in South Florida. Without any marketing or promotion whatsoever, the Soul Of Miami quickly became very popular amongst scenesters and partiers. It is now the go-to site for thousands of locals seeking the best of Miami’s social offerings. “We are very excited to participate in the Second Annual Miami Music Festival. Miami sorely needs to promote its live music scene, and we are happy to be a part of it,” says Soul Of Miami co-owner James Echols.

A list of performing artists at the Soul of Miami stage will be available soon on their website, www.soulofmiami.org. For other information regarding the Miami Music Festival and Artists Conference, please visit www.MiamiMusicFestival.org.
