Currently there is a statewide petition drive to get the medical marijuana issue on the ballot to change the laws in Florida. As part of this three stage extravaganza, some of South Florida’s top bands, spoken word artists and community activists will join together for patients’ and physicians’ right to use medical cannabis.

As a testament to the diversity of supporters for this cause, there will be a broad variety of musical styles including jazz, rock, reggae, folk, vocal harmonies, hip-hop, funk, experimental, tribal rhythms, traditional Peruvian, flamenco, world beat fusion, psychedelic grooves and various interactive jams.

Johnny Dread, Sweetbone, The Southwood Project, Gypsy Cat, Kuyayky, E.L.E., UOM, Hoosha, Bodhi, The Int’l Language, Cleaveland Jones, The Tribe, Raging Geisha, Sun Dry Cilo, Andrew Bayuk and the Undeniables, Mechanical Animal, The Barkless Dawgs, The Fly Kingdom, Raffa, Fabio Patino, Jevon Olea, Orrin Bolton, Steve Minotti, Omine, Frank Nitts, Orion, Mr Grim Reapa and more will be showcasing original music.

The 13th Annual Medical Marijuana Benefit Concert will also feature a selection of community speakers who will present information about the issues including Norm Kent – National NORML Board of Directors, Florida House of Representatives – Representative Dwight Bullard, South Miami City Commissioner Walter Harris, Coconut Grove Village Councilman Stephen Murray, Jeanne Baker – Florida State Board Member of the American Civil Liberties Union, Sara Yousuf – criminal defense attorney, Michael Minardi P.A., Jeffrey Kennedy – unsanctioned medical marijuana patient awaiting trial, Shawn Heller from the Florida Justice Institute, Eric Stevens from the Committee for Sensible Marijuana Policy, Angel Hernandez from Americans for Safe Access, Jayne King from the Florida Green Party, Steve Berke – comedian & video activist, Robert Platshorn – author and convicted smuggler from the Black Tuna Gang, representatives of PUFMM, NORML of South Florida and other concerned citizens.

NORML of South Florida, PUFMM, Patients Out Of Time, ACLU of Florida, Democracy for America, Marijuana Doctors and various other organizations will have informational booths with literature and handouts to help educate about community issues and the medical marijuana campaign in Florida.

The event will work to raise funds and awareness for PUFMM, NORML of South Florida and Patients Out Of Time’s medical marijuana campaign and the protection of patients’ rights. Previously, a person’s right to use medical necessity as a defense to marijuana charges has been upheld by several appeals courts in Florida. Marijuana has proven therapeutically useful in treating numerous medical conditions including muscle spasticity, arthritis, and the nausea related to AIDS and cancer chemotherapy. Recently, the City of South Miami passed a resolution to support medical marijuana on a statewide and national level – this is the first city in Florida to endorse the issue. About 700,000 Florida registered voters need to sign the petition in order for the issue to get on the ballot. Currently there are 15 states that have laws allowing marijuana to be used as medicine.

In addition there will be vendors and small businesses promoting and selling their merchandise, including The Wallflower Gallery, Between Spirit & Stone Jewelry, Smokey’s Tobacco Shop, Progressive Rags, Crystal Fun Design, Mystic Cottage, Joyful Clothes, Man With The Magic Hands, Massage By Paula and selected independent corporations.

As an added GREEN FEATURE to the event, the Green Mobility Network will provide bicycle racks for people to park their bicycles. We are also encouraging people to take public transportation – the Brickell Metro-Rail Station is only a few blocks away.

Production support provided by Ploppy Palace Productions, Atlas Sound Productions, Anamaze Productions and 7th Circuit Productions.

The 13th Annual Medical Marijuana Benefit Concert at Tobacco Road is currently looking for supportive sponsors and unique vendors to help to build up the community outreach and contribute to the cause.

The 13th Annual Medical Marijuana Benefit Concert at Tobacco Road is sponsored by Ploppy Palace Productions, Antidote Productions, Marijuana Doctors, OnlineGigs.com, Nu Design Element, Progressive Rags, Attorney Jim Lewis, Artists for Community Evolution, The Wallflower Gallery and NORML of South Florida.

Photographs of What Miami Beerger Crawl on 1/14/10

What Miami Beerger Crawl on Friday, January 14, 2011.  We had three stop for the night, our first stop was Burger & Beer Joint in Brickell. I did not get a chance to try the food or drinks here but got to mingle for a little bit.  Then we where off to The Filling Station in Downtown, here I tried the pulled pork sliders and the hamburger sliders.  I have to say the pulled pork sliders were so good and I tried the Woodchuck Raspberry Cider and it was yummy and the Staff was amazing.  For our last and finally stop for the night we went to Democratic Republic of Beer (next to the Adrienne Arsht Center) here I tried the Woodchuck Pear cider it was good but I think I like the Raspberry better.

You write. You’re a Poet. An Actor/Actress, even. You’re a Visual Artist. You sing. You’re a Musician. You dance. Or you simply appreciate. Rough Draft invites all of you!

There is a catch –the artist will NOT have the ability to dictate the music that they create to. If Jazz is played, the artist will…
Write/Act/Paint/Sing/Speak/Dance/Play, a piece that evokes the tone/sounds/mood of jazz as they will with Rock, Country, House, R&B, Rap, etc.

It is all impromptu and provides other Artists and Appreciators the profound experience of sharing and exploring the creative process.

The Base Paint Tents exhibited at FIU during various events to commemorate the anniversary of the earthquake in Haiti
Monday, January 10 – Saturday, January 15, 2011
FIU’s Modesto A. Maidique Campus

The Base Paint Tents is a project of ten tents being transformed into ten works of art by artists from around the world. The tents will ultimately function as multi-purpose classrooms in earthquake-ravaged Haiti for the children of Atlet Peyi Dayiti in Port-au-Prince. At almost a year after the devastating earthquake, this exhibition is a call for attention to the reality of a country that tries to carry on with life as usual, still amid ruins and tent towns.

There are important interview, coverage, and photo opportunities around the corner that may interest you for any stories you’re working on for the week of Art Basel:

The painting of the tents is currently taking place at Iron Side, a multi-purpose warehouse in Little Haiti (in Miami’s newly named Industrial Business District) located at 7600 Northeast 4th Court, Miami, FL 33138.

· Antuan, Artistic Director & Curator of The Base Paint Tents (www.antuanstudio.com)
· Paulina Montes, Executive Director of Fundación Manos Del Sur (www.manosdelsur.org)
· Iliana Levy, Program & Outreach Director of Step by Step Foundation (www.stepbystepfoundation.com)

The tents will ultimately function as multi-purpose classrooms in earthquake-ravaged Haiti on the property of a foundation called L’Athletique d’Haiti. They will function as shelters where more than three hundred children are able to receive education in a positive and safe environment.

The project was conceived as a collaboration of international artists and nonprofit organizations to support the reconstruction of education in Haiti through art. The distinctive elements include creation and exhibition of the tents at a series of locations and then finally setting-up the finished tents in Haiti.

The tents are 20x15x13 feet and were custom made by Armbruster Company, America’s oldest tentmaker. The paint and material for the tents were carefully chosen as they must be able to withstand the extreme weather of Haiti. The tent layout, personally designed by Antuan, is specifically constructed in order to allow for maximum durability, water and wind resistance, paintability, security, and ventilation. The painted exteriors of the tents will brighten the interior of the classrooms when the sun shines through. The tents will dually function as an art installation and iconic representation of educational progress for children in Haiti, as they will be visible flying to and from the international airport.

An international group of artists from across the Caribbean and Latin America have gathered in order to collaborate and create the tents; the artists, using the tents as their canvases will communicate their interpretations and perspectives of Haiti’s political, social, and environmental history.

The twelve international artists come from seven different countries: Haiti, Dominican Republic, Spain, Argentina, Cuba, Puerto Rico and the USA. Their artwork conveys a strong narrative about Haiti’s current challenges and explores different themes, such as the history of Haiti, its economy, folklore, religious beliefs, traditions, ecology, recreation, and the environment. The artists are: Antuan and Elba Luis Lugo, Pedro Barbeito, Jose Bedia, Edouard Duval-Carrie, Jose Garcia Cordero, Nicolas Leiva, Leonel Matheu, Ruben Millares and Antonia Wright, Gean Moreno, and Damian Sarno,.

The project’s art exhibit is also a fundraising event. Guests will have the opportunity to participate in the project by giving donations at different levels of sponsorship. The higher level will sponsor each complete tent and other levels will assist in arranging the tents with school items such as desks, chairs, supplies, and more. For more information please contact Paulina Montes at Paulina.Montes@manosdelsur.org or 305.860.6529.

Photographs of Dinner with Zacapa Rum Master Blender at Club 50 on 11/3/10

Dinner with Zacapa Rum Master Blender Lorena Vazquez at Club 50 on Wednesday, November 3, 2010.  As those of you who know me I like Tequila, but I am learning to like rum, especially after going to the last two Rum Renaissance Festivals.  We get to Club 50 and they have a special spiced rum punch made with Zacapa 23 year old rum, it had cloves, cinnamon and orange slices in it and was so yummy.  After mingling for about half an hour it was time for the presentation and dinner with Lorena Vazquez.  She told us about herself and what she does as a Master Blender and told us about the seven different rum we were about to taste, Un-Aged Rum, American Whiskey, Charred White Oak, Sherry, Pedro Ximenez, French Oak and the 23 year old Rum. My favorites was the American Whiskey and the 23 year old Rum.  Next we went on to dinner and I have to say it was amazing.  First course was Smoked Octopus paired with View from the top which is Zacapa Rum 23 with grapefruit and lime juice, honey ginger syrup and bitters.  Second course was Grilled Filet of Branzio paired with The Knickerbocker which is Zacapa 23 with Grand Marnier, lime juice and muddled raspberries. Third course was Braised Short Ribs (YUMMY) paired with Zacapa Old Fashioned which is Zacapa Rum 23, simple syrup, cigar bitters and orange bitters.  The forth and last course was Brioche Bread Pudding paired with Zacapa XO Neat.  Everything about the evening was wonderful, the food, the drinks and the company.  Thank you so much for the invitation and a chance to get a better appreciation for rum.

This event is an album release concert/charity event. Wake, the 8 song EP that the band recorded just before they broke up is finally being released. All proceeds will go to a local children’s charity for Thanksgiving.

The record was recorded on 1994 by Keith Rose at Criteria (RIP). He just finished mixing it 16 years later… and it sounds hard and loud… just like it should. So come on by… have a good time and help raise money for a good cause.

The band, who for the majority of the late 80s and early 90s was considered one of the best acts in Florida was made up of Rene Alvarez on vocals, Derek Murphy on drums, Rafael Tarragó on guitars and José Tillán on bass. Their heavy rock sounds were accompanied by introspective lyrics and emotional performances.

During the band’s 13 year career they independently released three recordings: ‘Water and Walls’ (with then guitar player Michael Lashinsky), the acoustic ‘The Subtleties of Anger’ and their full-length release ‘Stones for Steven.’ Their last effort ‘wake ‘ was recorded but never released due to their disbandment. The band, who opened for headlining acts such as Stone Temple Pilots, Candlebox and Gin Blossoms and shared the stage with other local favorites like Marilyn Mason, The Mavericks and Nuclear Valdez were a top draw in Miami and popular throughout Florida, as well as toured the East coast.

Five years in the making, Miami Hair Beauty & Fashion 2010 by Rocco Donna alongside South Florida beauty and fashion industry specialists will come together for a show that will tout latest innovations and cutting-edge trends in hair, make-up and fashion.

Leonardo Rocco, CEO and founder of Rocco Donna and international renowned leader in the hair design industry, is preparing to launch the Miami Hair Beauty and Fashion 2010 by Rocco Donna presented by Suave Professionals® on Oct. 14 in association with Fashion Box Studio headed by Elias Maida, President and Creative Director, and Patricia Rivadeneira, Vice President and Chief Orchestrator.

Held in the elegance of The Spa at the Viceroy Miami, this insiders-only event will be a first-of-its-kind marketing platform for the latest innovations in hair, make-up and fashion. Complete with a pink carpet for guests to walk and celebrity hosts, Candela Ferro and Rodner Figueroa to greet them, this will be a top-shelf, precedent setting event. This inaugural year the event will be limited to beauty and fashion industry insiders only and next year the event will expand to the anticipating public.

“This beauty platform will become the place where beauty industry leaders come to launch and showcase their products to the US Hispanic market and Latin America,” said Leonardo Rocco, co-creator of the Miami Hair Beauty & Fashion. “There is not quite another platform like this that pulls together the most sought after Hispanic celebrities, industry insiders, and global brands invested in this category and market in South Florida. We are proud to be the first to launch this one-of-a-kind event.”

From beginning to end, guests will feel that they are part of a celebrity gala with backstage access. Starting with the pink carpet supporting Susan G. Komen for the Cure which replaces the traditionally red carpet in the spirit of Breast Cancer awareness, to the pristine, elegant spa setting designed by Philippe Stark and behind the scenes access, Rocco Donna and the participating brands have pulled out all the stops.

Participating brands include: presenting sponsor Suave Professionals®, Babyliss PRO, Marcia Teixeira BKT, SO.CAP Hair Extensions, BECCA, Decléor Paris, and Taca Airlines. Furthermore, guests will be served Latino-inspired hors d’oeuvres during the cocktail courtesy of Morena Restaurant and they will be enchanted by elegant house music by Claudio Holze.

Unique to the show, Leonardo Rocco leading the hair & beauty experts from our exclusive alliances to this platform chose to style the models in glass suites, so that guests and media have the opportunity to see how models go from natural to glamorous. The glass suites will be divided by category that will include the “Suave Professionals® Hair Lounge,” where the celebrities and models will have their locks primped to achieve sensational red carpet and runway looks.

In the Make-up Suite, Decléor products will be prepping the skin before the application of BECCA’s award winning make-up system that leaves skin flawless every time. Finally, there will be a Fashion Suite sponsored by Taca Airlines where Irma Martinez and her Trendy team will be dressing and accessorizing the most radiant Hispanic talent with this Fall’s chic fashion tendencies.

Elias Maida, co-creator of Miami Hair Beauty & Fashion 2010 by Rocco Donna and Fashion Box Studio President, believes that Miami showcases some of the latest trends and attitudes in the world of beauty and fashion.

“Miami‘s unique position as a multicultural city, coupled with the dynamic interaction of cultures, make for women from all over the world share their beauty secrets resulting in vast beauty options and a highly educated audience in this category,” said Maida.

To add to the evening’s appeal, Irma Martinez will be serving as the night’s fashion curator. Martinez is an internationally renowned stylist and image-maker, a Target spokeswoman, and was recently named one of People en Español’s 25 most influential Latinas.

Immediately following the fashion show there will be an After Party sponsored by Babyliss PRO to celebrate Rocco Donna’s sixth anniversary at Club 50, the Viceroy’s private rooftop evening lounge. Rocco Donna’s anniversary celebrations have attracted over 1,000 people and included celebrities, media, and friends. And this year will be no exception, especially because of this year’s dual celebration.

This event would not be possible without the support of our sponsors, who believe in this innovative platform for showcasing exceptional hair, make-up and fashion. Our presenting sponsor is Suave Professionals®, our platinum sponsor is Taca Airlines, and gold sponsors are Babyliss PRO, Marcia Teixeira Brazilian Keratin Treatment, Yucatan Holidays, Morena Restaurant. Silver sponsors are SO.CAP, and BECCA. Bronze sponsors are Decleor Paris, Velati Candles and Chef Jackie. The Spa at Viceroy Miami is a partial sponsor.

Bodegon de Brickell Brings its Best!

Bodegon de Brickell
801 Brickell Bay Drive
Miami, FL
bodegonbrickell.com

By Talmage Thornhill
This gringa doesn’t even know how to properly pronounce the word “bodegon,” but that didn’t stop her from getting into the groove at Bodegon de Brickell last weekend at its sneak preview.

Located inside the  Four Ambassadors Building at 801 Brickell Bay Dr., the new hot spot transcends categories. Start with an amazing restaurant, add a healthy pinch of nightclub, glaze with some swanky lounge, and you just might have it. More practically, the place is neither small nor big, but is very open. Tiered levels with tables into the back of the space lend both privacy and focus to the dance floor, DJ booth, and stage down below. An impressive array of lighting and digital media keep you interested while the ample seating allows for maximum comfort.

For me and my crew of two others, the night felt effortless. I took my first try at dancing Salsa since my Padawan days in Miami, when I regretfully worked at an unspeakably tacky South Beach staple for longer than I’d like to admit (cough *Mango’s* cough). Alas, I had the basic 1-2-3 of salsa down, and turns out that rhythm is incredulously stubborn. With either  a sexy Cuban or confident Venezuelan as a partner, I was able to keep up.

While the band kept me moving, the bartender kept me sipping. A stiff cocktail or two, a generous sampling of the restaurant’s best dishes, and even complimentary champagne brought Bodegon de Brickell to that place all resto/lounges want to be: memorable. It’s easy to let one little thing or another slide in the hectic world of hospitality, but Bodegon understands it has stiff competition and is up for the challenge. We ended the night eager to discover what more fun there was in store.

bodegonbrickell.com will have details on events, including happy hour, nights catering to the Salsa and Merengue loving crowd with a live band, and local DJ talent brought to rip up the decks with everything from house to hip-hop. In the meantime, check out the grand opening this Friday night at 9:00 PM to take your taste of Bodegon de Brickell.

10/02/10 FUNNY GIRL “Director William Wyler’s classic musical tells the story of legendary Ziegfeld Follies comedienne Fanny Brice (Barbra Streisand, in an Oscar-winning role), an unconventional beauty who grew up in the Jewish slums of New York dreaming of stardom. When Brice finally becomes the toast of Broadway, the resentful reaction of her husband (Omar Sharif) threatens to destroy their marriage. The film received eight Oscar nominations.”

10/09/10 DARK VICTORY “Fast living comes easy for Long Island socialite Judith Traherne (Bette Davis), who counts throwing lavish soirees, enjoying free- flowing booze and raising thoroughbreds among the many pleasures in her hedonistic existence. But a horse-jumping accident forces her to come to terms with her lifestyle — and mortality — when a handsome doctor (George Brent) discovers that Judith suffers from a potentially fatal brain tumor. Humphrey Bogart co-stars.”

10/16/10 WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE “In this Grand Guignol chiller, Hudson sisters Jane (Bette Davis) and Blanche (Joan Crawford), both aging actresses, share a rotting Los Angeles mansion, where Jane, once a vaudeville headliner, remains lost in her deranged childhood fantasies. When a devastating car crash — blamed on a drunken Jane — leaves Blanche wheelchair- bound, her increasingly psychotic sister seizes the chance to settle a jealous score.”

10/23/10 VERTIGO “One of Alfred Hitchcock’s darkest and most compelling suspense films tells the story of police detective Scottie Ferguson (James Stewart), who has a crippling fear of heights — and an all-consuming obsession with a married woman. When an old friend asks him to tail his wife (Kim Novak), Scottie is drawn into a vortex of deceit and murder. But that’s only the beginning as a mesmerizing score draws Scottie to the film’s haunting final shot.”

10/30/10 PSYCHO “When larcenous real estate clerk Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) goes on the lam with a wad of cash and hopes of starting a new life, she ends up at the notorious Bates Motel, where twitchy manager Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) cares for his housebound mother. The place seems quirky but fine … until Marion decides to take a shower. Director Alfred Hitchcock’s Oscar-nominated shocker has been terrifying viewers for decades — and for good reason.”

Mallory and Lianne Lopez debut MaLi Beads at the Viceroy Hotel to raise funds for Mali Africa 9/10/10

New Miami-Based Jewelry Line is all About Giving Back
September 10, 2010, 5-11:00
Viceroy Hotel, Club 50
485 Brickell Avenue
Miami, FL 33131

www.MaLiBeads.com

Local designers and entrepreneurs Mallory and Lianne Lopez will debut their new jewelry line, MaLi Beads at the Viceroy Hotel in an effort to raise funds for one of the poorest nations in the world, Mali, Africa. Donations to MaLi Beads from those in attendance will support Save the Children, a leading organization recognized for their commitment to children in Mali.

About MaLi Beads
Named after its creators and designers Mallory and Lianne Lopez (connected by years of friendship, not relation), MaLi Beads reveals a deeper purpose with every concept. It was one coincidence that the two girls’ first names were a perfect combination of what was to become their signature line; but it was truly fate that both shared a desire to represent one of the poorest nations in the world, Mali. Through art and design, the two Miami-based entrepreneurs are driven to support the third world country with their “From MaLi, For Mali” campaign. Founded in 2009, the MaLi Beads line offers handmade jewelry collections in an eclectic range of designs inspired by the country’s eight regions. With the juxtaposition of varied mixed beads and the introduction of colorful elements, MaLi Bead’s pieces seamlessly combine an African-chic vibe with timeless sophistication. MaLi Beads is rooted in a triangle philosophy that continues to drive the brand’s inspiration: friendship, fashion and philanthropy. For more information please visit: www.MaLiBeads.com.

Back to the 80s with Eruption at Transit 9/18/10

Back to the 80s with ERUPTION
Sept. 18, 2010
9:00 p.m.
Transit Lounge
729 Southwest 1st Avenue, Miami, FL 33130

If you’ve ever been Hungry Like the Wolf and you know you won’t find a menu at the Breakfast Club, then you’re likely a fan of the ‘80s.

The decade of decadence brought us fluorescent fashions, flaunted teenage angst on the big screen and flung the city of Miami onto the international party scene. But what people remember most is the music.

Voted Best Band in Miami by the readers of the New Times, ERUPTION re-creates the sounds of the eighties with energy-filled, spot-on covers of the best alternative MTV classics of the era including U2, the Police, INXS, Tears for Fears, Duran Duran, Billy Idol, and more.

Whip it on over to Transit Lounge on Saturday, Sept. 18 for ERUPTION’s farewell to the summer show. Your favorite songs never sounded so good.

Spazio Nero Grand Opening Weekend 8/27-28/10

Spazio Nero
The Nightclub Of Brickell
Brickell’s Most Popular Nightclub to Re-Open After Extensive Renovations and Upgrades to Accomodate it’s Continuous and Growing Popularity
Spazio Nero
1421 South Miami Avenue, Miami, Florida 33131

Open since Fall 2007 , Spazio Nero, known as the only nightclub in Brickell, has briefly closed its doors to undergo massive upgrades and renovations to expand its size in order to accomodate more guests. Re-opening in late August 2010, over 3,000 square feet of space will be added to the (previously) 2,000 square foot on-premise nightclub at Segafredo Brickell. From state of the art LED lights to the interior design, by renowned designer Francois Frossard, Spazio Nero is THE nightclub of Brickell.

‘Known as the ‘Club di Brickell,’ the only ‘nightclub’ in the area, we felt obligated to bring a true, state-of-the-art world-class nightclub to the Brickell and downtown Miami area,’ said co-owner Alejandro Ferllen.’With the collaboration of renowned designer, Francois Frossard, and the award-winning audio and light specialists, Infinite Audio, we have achieved our goal and we can’t wait to debut the new Spazio Nero to both our loyal and new clientele.’

Embodying the nightclub’s name, Spazio Nero, the most talked about hotspot in the downtown Miami/Brickell area, is outfitted in all things noir, from the black, plush leather couches, to the black marble and stainless steel bar. Hints of light blue are scattered around the club on perfectly aligned pillars beneath the bar and on oversized mirrors placed high above. Silver hues wash over the black crocodile DJ booth standing tall in the spacious venue and also delicately painted on the black wallpaper, creating intricate patterns on the walls. The nightclub features 25 feet high ceilings, an elevated DJ booth, a one-of-a-kind advanced multi-zoned distribution audio system and a computer controlled lighting program by Infinite Audio Systems. Guests can enjoy the ambience, while sitting back and relaxing in the comfortable, plush seating area in the VIP section. The designer’s goal was to create an atmosphere that would essentially take the guests of Spazio Nero “out of their daily lifestyles” and into a world where they would become part of the d’cor – thus, disappearing into the night.

This fashionable hotspot is one of the most stylishly hip lounges around town. Offering stellar cocktail concoctions, a fresh bar menu and a seductive blend of the best house, 80’s and pop dance music spun by savvy DJs, each night turns into a one of a kind experience at Spazio Nero. Bottle and table services are available.

Developed by VE Restaurant Group, Spazio Nero is located at 1421 South Miami Avenue, Miami, Florida 33131. Spazio Nero will be open Thursday through Saturday from 10:00PM ‘ 5:00 AM. For more information please call 305.577.9811 or visit www.SpazioNero.com.

Photographs of IKO-IKO celebrates 28 years at Tobacco Road on 8/13/10

Blues, booze and schmooze. Over the years Tobacco Road and IKO IKO changed the course of live music in South Florida. Here they are rocking together twenty eight years later and the band is still kicking harder than ever.

Philanthropist Bacardi Tips Hat to Food For The Poor birthday party luncheon fundraiser at Dolores But You Can Call Me Lolita 8/25/10

Philanthropist Bacardi Tips Hat to Food For The Poor
Dolores But You Can Call Me Lolita
100 South Miami Avenue, Miami, FL 33130.
Aug. 25, 12:30 p.m.

RSVP to the birthday luncheon hosted by Good Karma Group and StylishMiami.com by calling 786-623-7876 or e-mailing GoodKarmaMiami@aol.com. Suggested minimum donation is $50 to attend the 12:30 p.m. luncheon at Dolores But You Can Call Me Lolita, 100 South Miami Avenue, Miami, FL 33130.

Kimberly Bacardi and Natalie Grass invite you to wear your most stylish hat to their birthday party luncheon at “Dolores But You Can Call Me Lolita” on Aug. 25. This year, the vibrant pair is passing on receiving personal gifts – asking friends and family instead to send good karma and monetary donations in their honor to the South Florida-based nonprofit Food For The Poor.

Bacardi traveled to Haiti in July with a group from the Florida Marlins, including Marlins catcher John Baker, to witness the destitute living conditions of families. Through the eye-opening experience, Bacardi realized her desire to help those who live just an hour and a half by plane from Miami.

Birthday monies will go toward the Florida Marlins “Homes For Haiti” campaign to construct the Good Karma Community Center in Cap-Haitien, Haiti. The center will provide a place for a health clinic and vocational training classes. Extra funds will be used to fulfill other needs within the community – housing, solar power and animal husbandry projects, for example.

“I am so excited by this opportunity,” said Bacardi. “The more money we raise, the more lives we can positively affect and change.”

During Bacardi’s journey to Haiti, she visited Food For The Poor-sponsored orphanages, handicapped homes, feeding centers and villages. Bacardi’s goal is to inspire others to realize they can make a difference in Haiti – one person, one family at a time.

“By traveling to Haiti, Kim’s presence gave those she met and hugged renewed hope,” said Angel Aloma, Food For The Poor’s Executive Director. “By using their birthdays to do good for others, Kim and Natalie understand the importance of cheerful giving, and that it is more fulfilling to give than it is to receive.”

To support Bacardi and Grass’s effort, please make checks payable to Food For The Poor and include the special source code “SC# 70264.” Donations can be mailed to 7824 SW 193 Street, Miami, FL 33157. All gifts are tax-deductible. Online donations can also be made through the charity’s secure Web site at www.foodforthepoor.org/goodkarmagroup.

Food For The Poor, the largest international relief and development organization in the nation, does much more than feed millions of hungry poor in 17 countries of the Caribbean and Latin America. This interdenominational Christian agency provides emergency relief assistance, clean water, medicines, educational materials, homes, support for orphans and the aged, skills training and micro-enterprise development assistance, with more than 96 percent of all donations going directly to programs that help the poor. For more information, please visit www.FoodForThePoor.org.

The National Wildlife Federation (NWF) is America’s largest conservation organization. NWF works with more than 4 million members, partners and supporters in communities across the country to protect and restore wildlife habitat, confront global warming and connect with nature. Because there are more than 10,000 miles of actual shoreline along the Gulf (counting bays and inlets), NWF volunteers are fanning out to locate birds and other creatures in trouble. All oiled wildlife is reported to the official Oiled Wildlife Hotline–866-557-1401–and picked up by trained rehabilitation specialists to be taken to the nearest rehab center. The organization continues to recruit people in the Gulf area with developed wildlife observation skills and with a respectable knowledge of local lands and waters. For more information visit nwf.org.

JB Kitchen & Bar opened has emerged as one of Brickell’s newest illustrious neighborhood restaurants. Wine Down, America’s premier wine tasting party, has joined forces with Boutari Wines and Viceroy Miami to host Wine Down Miami.

On Wednesday, August 25th from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., Miamians are invited to join celebrity wine consultant Michael Green and Wine Down co-founder Andrew Levine for Wine Down Miami at Viceroy’s Club 50 for a celebration of food, wine, and the Mediterranean lifestyle. Guests will have the opportunity to enjoy unlimited tastes of delicious and distinct wines from the Boutari portfolio and signature hors d’oeuvres from celebrity chef Michael Psilakis’ Mediterranean-inspired Eos restaurant.

“We are thrilled to be bringing our Wine Down brand to Miami,” says Wine Down co-creator Michael Green. “We’ve selected partners in Boutari Wines, Viceroy Miami, Club 50, and Eos Restaurant that will allow us to give our young professional demographic a first-class experience for a very reasonable ticket price.”

“Miami is the perfect location to showcase the refreshing summer wines of Boutari,” noted Patrick Bennett, Boutari Marketing Manager. “We are pleased that our partnership with Wine Down will allow us to celebrate great wines and the Mediterranean lifestyle.”

Wine Down is America’s premier interactive wine tasting party. Co-founded by wine celebrity Michael Green, formerly the Wine and Spirits Consultant to Gourmet Magazine, and Andrew Levine, Wine Down was created to make wine more social and accessible by marrying themed wine selections with top DJs and live bands, dramatic spaces, culinary celebrities, passed hors d’oeuvres, giveaways and more. Wine Down was twice selected by Time Out New York as one of “The Best Drinking Events in New York” and recently featured at the 2010 Food Network Atlantic City Food and Wine Festival with the Wine Down Art Show with Ted Allen and Wine Down 101: Fast Track to Wine Expertise. Wine Down will be making its international debut at The Ritz-Carlton Dubai in October 2010.

Founded in 1879 by its namesake Yiannis Boutari, the Boutari winery is the oldest family-owned winery in Greece and one of its leading producers of native Greek grape varieties like Moschofilero and Xinomavro. When Yiannis Boutari became the first winemaker to bottle and ship Xinomavro (the noble red grape of Greece), he changed the world’s perception of Greek wines by showing that Greece had the potential to deliver fine wines to the dinner tables of Europe. Greece is the Mediterranean’s most mountainous country: its “continental climate” (with warm summer days, cool summer evenings) and ancient volcanic soils are ideal for the production of world-class wines. Today, the Boutari family oversees 6 state-of-the-art wineries spanning each of the top Greek controlled-origin appellations (AOC) and produces some of the greatest expressions of Greek grape varieties, as well as modern-styled bottlings of popular French varieties like Syrah and Merlot.

Viceroy Miami is the centerpiece of the unprecedented ten-acre Icon Brickell enclave in downtown Miami. Overlooking Biscayne Bay at the gateway to Miami’s financial district, this glamorous urban resort was conceived by South Florida’s most prominent developer, The Related Group, in collaboration with iconic figures in architecture (Arquitectonica), interior design (Kelly Wearstler) and hospitality (Viceroy). Viceroy muse Kelly Wearstler has created a provocative blend of modern sophistication and exotic Asian accents for Viceroy Miami’s 162 guestrooms, suites and residences, as well as for the lobby, restaurants, lounges and event spaces. The hotel’s 15th-floor destination restaurant anchors Icon Brickell’s two-acre outdoor living room and pool terrace, while a sky-high rooftop pool bar crowns the tower. Managed by Viceroy Miami, the 28,000-square-foot full-service Spa at Icon Brickell offers ten treatment rooms, signature Viceroy wellness experiences, a 5,000-square-foot water lounge and an expansive fitness facility.

The Coffee House Gypsies & Fernando Perdomo (from Dreaming In Stereo) together in a very special concert to celebrate Camillus House and it’s 50 years of service to Miami

Two of Miami’s local music scene powerhouses, The Coffee House Gypsies and Dreaming In Stereo’s Fernando Perdomo, have teamed up to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Camillus House – the homeless shelter and service center of Miami-Dade County. The show takes place at 9:00 PM on Wednesday, August 11th on the second floor of Miami’s oldest live music venue; the legendary Tobacco Road (located at 626 South Miami Avenue). The program features a rare singer/songwriter-styled performance by Perdomo prior to the acoustic-jamming of The Coffee House Gypsies (with audience participation encouraged). The two performances will then be followed by an open drum circle finale. You must be 21 or older to attend. Second floor doors open at 8:30 PM and admission is $10 at the door. Tickets are on sale for just $7 at www.CoffeeHouseGypsies.com. Jamming with The CHG and drum circle participation is open to the public. Anyone wanting to bring a percussive instrument for participation will be required to have a Jam Pass. Jam Passes cost $3 online at www.CoffeeHouseGypsies.com or $10 at the door. The evening benefits Camillus House and the homeless in Miami.

Camillus House is a registered 501(c)3 Non-profit agency that provides humanitarian services to poor and homeless men, women and children in Miami-Dade County in Southern Florida. Founded in 1960, it is one of the oldest and largest continuously operated charities in South Florida, providing a variety of services (including direct care for homeless individuals, treatment programs and job training for individuals with substance abuse and mental health issues, emergency, transitional, and permanent housing for individuals and families, and healthcare for the homeless and uninsured). Camillus House has grown over the past 50 years from a small overnight shelter into a full service center offering a full “continuum of care” for persons who are poor and homeless.
Every service offered at Camillus is carried out with the deeply held belief that every human being is precious and deserves love, respect, and a chance to live a dignified life. Camillus does much more than offer a free meal, medical care, a shower, or drug treatment. It offers a second chance to the desperate, the lonely, and the ones society has left behind. Many of the clients who come to Camillus House have nowhere else to go. They have no friends, no family, and no loved ones to help them through their times of trouble. Camillus House becomes their family, giving them the hope and support they need to begin the long, difficult transition to a new life and self-sufficiency.

About The Coffee House Gypsies: Both The New Times and The Miami Herald compared the music of The Coffee House Gypsies to the likes of Fleetwood Mac and The Mamas and The Papas. The band has performed all over Florida and in New York, and has won several awards including one South Florida QOOL Shows Award and several STATUS QuO Awards. They’ve worked with names like Dorian Reyes of Pangea and Kevin Michaels of Billboard. Songs from their latest release, The Artist, can be heard playing South, on Clear Channel Communication stations in the Florida Keys, and as far North as WYEP in Pittsburgh. The band is preparing to release a new album fall of 2010 and invites everyone to visit them at www.CoffeeHouseGypsies.com.

About Fernando Perdomo: GrungeKat Magazine called him “the anti-midi” and The New Times referred to him as a “local guitar virtuoso.” Everyone agrees, this guitar slinging frontman is a musical genius. Having worked with names like Emilio Estefan, Cristian Castro, Jorge Moreno, MIKA, and Randy Barlow, Fernando Perdomo established himself early as a force to be reckoned with. His most recent releases include “Dreaming In Stereo” which sported local favorites like “Steal This Song” and “I’m not going to move to L.A.” and his recent collaboration with 70’s kid, Victor Kinglsey, “Fake Smiles.” Perdomo’s releases sell out faster than he can get them recorded and his collaborations are always superb. Visit him on mySpace at www.myspace.com/fernandoperdomo.

Annette Recommends Rik Rak Salon, Boutique & Bar

I have to say that you can find the best places to eat in the most unlikely places.  Rik Rak is a upscale full service salon with a little cafe.  They serve beer, wine, Prosecco, pasta, sandwiches and a lot more.  I ordered the tomato basil soup with a grilled cheese sandwich with tomato.  This was the best tomato basil soup I have ever had, the chef  makes it fresh everyday and what a difference it makes.

I just can’t give it enough praise you just need to go order it.  The grilled cheese was a gourmet grilled cheese with tomato and it was the yummiest grilled cheese I think I have ever had.  I had a Bellini with my meal, which topped the meal off perfectly.  The service was outstanding, the chef’, his name is Andrew, was so nice and made everything to order. I will be going back again and again.  They also serve breakfast,  I am going to make a point of making my way over to Brickell some morning to try it.

Xperimenting and combining sounds like merengue, ska, kuduru and jazz, these musicians are breaking barriers and creating a totally different genre further solidifying their hometowns in South Florida as a mecca of musical diversity. Already being solicited to perform across the globe in Europe with their live show that’s unlike any other, it will be only a matter of time before this band will reach every major continent and the hearts of everyone.

Bodega Fin Del Mundo Malbec
Postales Del Fin Del Mundo Merlot
Postales Del Fin Del Mundo Malbec
Villa Diana Pinot Grigio

Chairman’s Reserve was first blended in 1999 and was overseen by the then Chairman, Laurie Barnard who conceived a quality rum which was blended using continuous and pot still rums coming on stream after ageing. Local demand has been phenomenal and the brand has expanded internationally, where the versatility of the rum makes for great cocktails.?Chairman’s Reserve recently won Gold – Best in Class at the International Wine & Spirits Competition and Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Tasting Note: Good dark brown amber colour. The pot still richness comes through on the nose with sweet honeyed fruit and spicy vanilla from the oak. The palate is balanced, with a mellow but complex mix of ripe raisin fruit, tobacco and spice. The rum has a long enjoyable finish. In St. Lucia Chairman’s reserve is best enjoyed with coconut water but can be drunk neat or with a chaser of your choice.

On 12th St. and Brickell Ave, behind Gordon Biersch, and in front of the Mellon Financial Center. We deliver!

Chef Michael Psilakis and Restaurateur Donatella Arpaia to Open New Restaurant bistro e 7/10/10

VICEROY TO OPEN bistro e
AN ELEVATED DINING EXPERIENCE AT GROUND FLOOR PRICING
ARRIVES DOWNTOWN JULY 12

Michelin-starred Chef Michael Psilakis and restaurateur Donatella Arpaia, co-founders and creators of eos in Miami and Kefi restaurant in Manhattan, are launching a new concept for fast, inspired and affordable downtown breakfast and lunch, aptly named bistro e.

The restaurant, residing in the same 15th floor space of Viceroy Miami as its nightly counterpart eos – the yin to bistro e’s yang, maintains Chef Psilakis’s dedication to local seasonal ingredients while lowering prices and speeding up service. With menu options, such as e | appetizers, e | main courses, e | specials and e | snacks starting at $5, bistro e is the go-to spot for Brickell power meetings and social experiences, priced for frequency and affordability starting July 12. There will be a different e³ | daily special, featuring three-course meal selections for “$15 on 15th” including a pint of beer. . Speedy service will be ensured with the presentation of an hourglass on the table upon arrival, so all staff will be aware and lunch guests can get in and out within 60 minutes, if requested.

The cooking style for bistro e is what Chef Psilakis affectionately refers to as “First Generation American Cuisine,” a melting pot of foreign dishes fused with American favorites. The menu, uniquely similar to the cultural blends of Miami residents, delivers a farm-to-table approach with ingredients hand-picked at their ripest and ready to serve. Each dish is thoughtfully composed, showcasing the chef’s exceptional talent for balancing flavors.

Breakfast offerings, ideal for the time-pressed yet discriminating executive or traveler, includes cast-iron frittatas, country fried breakfast and grab-and-go favorites like mouth-watering danishes, muffins and croissants; seasonal fruits; freshly squeezed juices; and an assortment of organic teas and a signature whipped café con leche.

Lunch guests indulge in a wide variety of appetizers and snacks ($5 – 10) including grilled San Marzano tomato, mozzarella and basil pizza and Chef Michael’s one of a kind guacamole; sandwiches, salads and burgers ($14 – 18), such as the e Burger with mushrooms, gruyere and bacon and egg optional served on a brioche bun and brisket French dip with gruyere, caramelized onions and garlic with dipping jus; and main dishes or specials ($13 – 22) including Linguine with Clams in garlic white wine sauce and Hanger Steak with crispy potatoes and charred tomatoes.

Recognized for bringing Greek cuisine to the modern culinary stage at three Manhattan restaurants, Chef Psilakis has earned many culinary and hospitality awards. He was named “Best New Chef” by Food & Wine (2008) and “Chef of the Year” by both Bon Appétit (2008) and Esquire (2007). Psilakis is currently a judge on The Food Network’s hit reality show, Ultimate Recipe Showdown. Donatella has been featured on NBC’s Today Show, Bravo’s Top Chef, and the Food Network’s Iron Chef America, and profiled as the 31st “Most Powerful Woman” in Manhattan by The New York Post.

bistro e is located on the 15th floor of Viceroy Miami [485 Brickell Avenue] in the heart of downtown Miami and is open seven days a week, serving breakfast from 6:30 AM – 11 AM and lunch from 11 AM – 4 PM. Eos will open for dinner from 6 PM – 11 PM. For reservations please call 305-503-0373 or visit www.viceroymiami.com.

Blondes vs Brunettes Elisabetta showcase at Rik Rak sponsored by CoupTessa 6/24/10

RikRak Salon Boutique & Bar hosts Elisabetta Fantone‘s “Blondes vs. Brunettes” series, featuring Gretchen Rossi of The Real Housewives of Orange County— Sponsored by CoupTessa.com

The ultimate question of “Who’s hotter?” is finally settled on June 24th , 2010 at the RikRak Salon Boutique & Bar on Brickell Avenue as international artist Elisabetta Fantone puts it to a vote with an interactive exhibit entitled “Blondes vs. Brunettes”. Not to worry, no arduous registration process required for this election, as crossing the RikRak threshold completes the task, making every guest an eligible voter. This highly anticipated event is already being raved about as one of the “5 Best Things to Do” this month in Miami by Plum TV. “Blondes vs. Brunettes” is sponsored by CoupTessa.com, the newest online coupon site for women, and promises an electrifying evening of sugar and champagne featuring pop-art, Cupcakes by Kristy, Lunetta Prosecco provided by Palm Bay International, and last but certainly not least, a good old-fashioned female rivalry.

Italian by birth, yet a citizen of the world, Elisabetta Fantone is a jet-setting multi-faceted superstar poised for international esteem. In 2006, she conquered Canada with her stunning beauty and undeniable acting prowess, and now, four short years later, she boasts celebrated pop-art painter and chart-topping vocalist as additions to her already impressive resume.

“Blondes vs. Brunettes” is a compilation of pieces from Fantone’s most recent pop-art collections: “Blonde Icons” and “Iconic Brunettes”. This collective series of portraits features icons like Sophia Lauren, Marilyn Monroe, Linda Evangelista, Kate Moss, and Elizabeth Taylor, among others. Fantone even showcases beauties from the ever-popular reality TV genre like starlet Gretchen Rossi. Fantone’s fascination with high-profile women who wear their hair color with such confidence and panache that it becomes their signature is what inspired her to paint Rossi, Bravo’s The Real House Wives of Orange County’s most controversial blonde, and invite her to participate in the event. Rossi, who has recently launched Gretchen Christine Beaute, a line of stunning beauty products, will share the night with Fantone by unveiling the line to the women of Miami, while celebrating her insatiable portrait by the artist.

These ladies may be easy on the eyes but they are also no slouches in the social media department. This event will be streamed live from the RikRak Salon Boutique & Bar on the Elisabetta Fantone Facebook Fan Page as well as on affiliate sponsor sites, CoupTessa.com and RikRak.com. As if being able to view this fete as it happens live is not enough, the online audience will also be invited to Tweet with the blonde & brunette guests of honor -Fantone, Rossi, Tessa and Raquel Waters (owner of RikRak)- throughout the event. These lucky interactive participants will also be able to cast their vote for their favorite painting and participate in other live give-aways right from the comfort of their home, globally! Not only will this be the party of the year combining beauty, art, fashion, and fun with some of the finest women stateside but it will also be a social media soiree for the ages – the first of it’s kind- NOT to be missed.

River Lounge launches a brand new happy hour 6/11/10

ONE YEAR LATER AND RIVER LOUNGE IS STILL MIXING IT UP
Launching a brand new happy hour and lots of other surprises

Recognized as one of the chicest places to have a cocktail, River Lounge has established a name in South Florida as one of the premiere lounges in the city. When the venue opened its doors, all were excited to view its lovely décor, classy ambiance and gorgeous view of the Miami River. With its 30ft ceilings, LED lighting, circular bar, flat screen TVs, custom lighting fixtures, outdoor and indoor seating and custom lounge furniture the venue became a favorite for Miami’s affluent professionals. A year later and River Lounge is mixing’ it up for patrons.

Launching on Friday, June 11, 2010 “Happy Hour on The River” will commence from 5:00PM-10:00PM offering live music and 2 for 1 drinks. For the martini lover, $4 martinis will be available from 5:00PM-7:00PM. So whether shaken, stirred or fruit flavored, there will be a delicious choice for every taste.

River Lounge was a concept created by Sunset Entertainment Group’s dynamic duo Chris Breed and Michael Gruber. These gentlemen have a track record that truly reinforces why River Lounge rapidly became a Miami hotspot. With such successful and legendary venues as The Tropicana, Teddy’s at the Roosevelt Hotel, Cabana Club, Sterling Steakhouse, Green Door, and the White Lotus, South Florida rapidly embraced their different approach to nightlife.

With a one year anniversary now approaching, the venue will unveil a series of spectacular changes. “Change is what the area is all about. We came into Downtown before a few others jumped on board. We took the risk, as we knew that Miamians wanted more; more class, more beauty and we wanted to provide them with a lovely venue that exemplified relaxed elegance,” said Michael Gruber.

New features will include live music, weekly art events, on-going fashions shows, guest DJs and a re-vamped Happy Hour. With this “re-vamp” those who wish to sip a cocktail after work can expect that and then some as the River Lounge team will provide them with all the reason to come out after a rough day at the office.

Located in Downtown Miami and away from South Beach, this gorgeous space will continue to cater to the active professional, corporate and social scene as it has for the last several months. But will continue to please the most discerning of Miami patrons by updating the already unique cocktail list and adding even more choices to the signature martini list.

With all the new tweaks and oh so fab new events set in place, River Lounge will gear up to celebrate an electrifying one year anniversary this August. For those who got on the list for their huge grand opening, expect a soiree just as big if not bigger. “To please the South Florida patron, you have to mix up a lot more than your martinis. “You have to [always] keep it fresh. Here we offer them casual elegance,” said Shawn Finkel, general manager of River Lounge.

River Lounge is located inside the Epic Hotel & Residences located at 270 Biscayne Boulevard Way, Miami, FL 33131.

Photographs of Voli Vodka Tasting Event At Aficionados Cigars and Liquor on 5/27/10

Voli Vodka Tasting at Aficionados Cigars and Liquor on Thursday, May 27, 2010.  Voli Spirits has developed the first and only low-calorie, electrolyte-enhanced vodkas with a full line of fruit and fusion flavors.  They had Voli Lemon Vodka, Voli Raspberry Cocoa Vodka, Voli Espresso Vanilla and Voli Lyte at the tasting.  They were all good but the Raspberry Cocoa was my favorite, had jsut a hint of cocoa.
