Invitation -Safespace’s Mothers Day 5/6/09

safe-space-v2

Safespace is an organization that assists victims of domestic violence. If you can attend the event or contribute items for the auction or if you can e-mail blast this to your contacts, the women, children and men, yes that is right, men, will definitely appreciate any support we can show. It is a topic that is near and dear to several of our hearts and the ultimate question is: how many of you know someone who is or has been abused? Those that are abused, typically do not talk about it and never will bring it up so it can actually be your neighbor or your co-worker. You will be amazed.

I hope to see you there and if you can not make it to the event but can contribute something, please contact Jeannette direct as monetary donations would be appreciated as well.

Thank you Everyone for taking the time to read and review this. Stay well and have a wonderful evening.

MDPL invites you to the opening reception for From Miami With Love 4/17/09

ART DECO GALLERY
Friday 17 April 7:00 pm

OPENING RECEPTION FOR FROM MIAMI WITH LOVE
Some of the earliest pioneers in the rediscovery and renovation of Miami Beach’s Art Deco buildings in the 1980s and 90s were gay artists and designers. Having found inexpensive work and living spaces, they were inspired by the dazzling tropical light and growing diversity of South Beach to create art expressing homoerotic themes.
fmwl_stamp
The exhibition From Miami With Love includes works by some of these local artists, as well as from gay artists worldwide. The exhibit has been organized by the Cultural Center of Spain (CCE), as a part of a traveling contemporary art show entitled Historias de Amor (Love Stories), a selection of more than 50 pieces from Colección Visible, a Spanish foundation that has been working for years in creating a gay-oriented art collection. The foundation’s objective is to create a gay art museum in Spain where works by the most relevant 20th Century artists could be presented, and to highlight the role of homosexuals in contemporary art.

In addition to the exhibit, CCE and Hardcore will offer several parallel activities to the 2009 Miami Beach Gay Pride, including the special preview of the Spanish musical “Tómbola” by Marisol, at the Miami Beach Cinematheque, a Spanish gay film series, and a roundtable for gay activists and experts in contemporary art on the importance of art in the fight for homosexual rights to be held in the Bass Museum.

The exhibit will be open weekdays from 10 am to 5 pm until the end of April. Free admission.

Location: Art Deco Education Center at Historic City Hall, 1130 Washington Av, Miami Beach

The exhibition consists of 57 works by mentally handicapped artists from the U.S., England, Spain, Chile, Peru, Bolivia and Paraguay. The work selection was done by Juan Martin, an outsider art expert and executive director of NAEMI. NAEMI is an international organization dedicated to discovering, promoting and exhibiting work by artists with mental illness.
Many of the exhibiting artists are self-taught and they transmit a personal and intense vision of art. With initiatives such as these, the NAEMI Foundation is looking to educate the public regarding art produced by persons who have or have had mental problems.
As Lyle Rexer, author of the book “How to Look at Outsider Art”, elucidate: “Outsider art, those pieces that resist entering into that invisibility by provokingly producing a confusion in our conceptual categories, may act as an incentive for our esthetic conscience. Look again! It seems to say: Look directly and do not take anything for granted.
National Art Exhibition by the Mentally Ill (NAEMI) is a Florida non profit organization which has given art access to mentally ill persons that would have otherwise remained isolated from the contemporary cultural tendency. NAEMI’s objective is discovering, studying, promoting, exposing and also the conservation of this type of art nationwide. With this type of initiative NAEMI is trying to educate the community on outsider art, help eradicate prejudice against mental illnesses and reaffirming the creative capacity of mentally ill patients.

Deon Davis, Author
I’ll Find A Way (A Mother’s Journey of Love and Acceptance for her Gay Son

Recently published book I’ll Find A Way hit the online bookstores and Authorhouse.com February 19, 2009, the book is written by first time author Deon Davis who expressingly shares her journey of raising her gay son throughout her book.

Davis felt the need to put their experience in book form to help not only parents but the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender young adults and teenagers. The emotional and physical toll that this deep dark secret took on her son almost destroyed his life but through family, love, self-acceptance and therapy he found a way and now enjoys the best that life has to offer.

Each year we lose our children to suicide, substance abuse or the cruel and lonely streets because of the ignorance so many of us share for the GLBT Community. In writing this book, Author Deon M. Davis dedicates herself to fight for one less suicide, glbt living on the streets, and last but not least, defamation against this beautiful community of human beings.
A proceed from each book sold will be donated to organizations that provide safe havens, counseling and other necessities.

Celebrate the end of a fantastic season with the unbridled romance of Tchaikovsky and the rich talents of MTT and pianist Vladimir Feltsman. Enjoy a lively lyric scene from Tchaikovsky’s opera Eugene Onegin as Conducting Fellow Edward Abrams brings the elegant Polonaise to life. His First Piano Concerto has endlessly been parodied by Liberace stylings, but in the hands of fellow Russian Feltsman, this work is pure genius and beauty. The musical and biographical journey ends with his Fifth Symphony, where MTT navigates through the dense score of incandescent sensibilities and erupting violent outbursts. Broward patrons: take advantage of our round-trip bus service to Sunday’s performance. Call the box office for more details!

Frost Spring Openings Challenge the Concept of Art 4/17/09

FIU’s New Frost Art Museum announces Spring Openings That Challenge the Concept of Art

Miami, (April 15, 2009) – The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University announces major spring openings: Because I Say So from The Scholl Collection, Genetic Portraits by Nela Ochoa, and the Kenan-Flagler Family Discovery Gallery on Friday, April 17, 2009 at 6 p.m. at The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum located at 10975 SW 17 Street, Miami, FL 33199. The event is free and open to the public. Also on view will be FIU’s BFA student show, Wake.

“The exhibits, although inherently different in all respects, explore and test the limits of creativity,” said Dr. Carol Damian, director & chief curator for The Frost.

In Because I Say So, viewers will note how sculpture in particular has confounded the status-quo, especially when it defies the ordinary association with works of art, or is considered as “installation” art, or as a part of an installation. The pedestals of the past, now long forsaken, are replaced by transformative environments, sometimes entire rooms dedicated to a single artist’s work. The viewer is confounded, confronted, invited, and amazed as one becomes immersed in the space. Works are placed directly on the floor; hung from the ceiling; described in site-specific locations; cantilevered off the walls; defiantly testing notions of scale, and stimulating daring responses. Each artist provides the viewer with a point of departure for an exploration of different levels of the mind and intellect not possible with traditional sculpture or painting.

Major collectors Debra and Dennis Scholl present the often unseen sculpture that is central to their significant contemporary art collection. They describe their process as looking for “work that succeeds both on and below the surface, evoking a strong response, and not necessarily a positive one. “So long as a viewer is engaged enough to give a reaction, either one of pleasure or discomfort, we feel that the work has succeeded”.

Genetic Portraits by Nela Ochoa, a prolific and internationally recognized multi-media artist, offers works in the areas of video art, sculpture, and performance to explore the genetic codes of human bodies. Her interest in the human body has led her to work with medical images such as X-rays and MRI’s, integrating them into videos, paintings and installations. Her most recent work has led her further into the body, where she explores the mysteries of DNA.

The Kenan-Flagler Family Discovery Gallery allows visitors to experience interactive activities designed to educate and entertain. This state-of-the-art Discovery Gallery consists of 13 stations including the computer-based display, Picture Yourself, where a camera takes an image of a person’s face and reproduces it on a touch screen. Participants can then trace the contours of the face with their fingers and print the finished product. The Discovery Gallery will also include a sculpture garden based on the works of the Sculpture Park collection housed on the Florida International University Park Campus; a rubbing station where children can rub images embedded onto a table to make their own print; and a textures station based on works in The Frost Museum’s Permanent Collection.

FLORIDA PREMIERE
Saturday, April 25
9:40PM | Regal 18

In 1974 Broadway darling Michael Bennet gathered a group of stage dancers, affectionately known asgypsies, together and recorded their life stories. It is from those very recordings that the world-widehit musical A Chorus Line was born. For the first time, we are taken back to those confessional sessions and hear excerpts from the actual recordings as the filmmakers follow the creation of the original stage show, and then its recent revival while introducing us to the original cast and creative team and the budding talent who are auditioning.

An obvious choice for musical lovers, Every Little Step is a superbly made film that brings an audience together for a journey that is exhilarating, heartbreaking, and completely unforgettable.

Directors James D. Stern & Adam Del Deo will be in attendance.

FILM NOIR CLASSICS
Film noir, a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish Hollywood crime dramas, often emphasizes moral ambiguity and sexual motivation, derived from the hard-boiled school of crime fiction that emerged in the United States during the Depression. Hollywood’s classic film noir period is generally regarded as stretching from the early 1940s to the late 1950s, and films of this genre are associated with a low-key black-and-white visual style that has roots in German Expressionist cinematography.

Scarlet Street
Directed by Fritz Lang
USA/1945/101 minutes/B&W
A box-office hit in its day (despite being banned in three states), Scarlet Street is perhaps legendary director Fritz Lang’s (M, Metropolis) finest American film. When middle-aged milquetoast Chris Cross (Edward G. Robinson–Double Indemnity, Little Caesar) rescues street-walking bad girl Kitty (Joan Bennett–The Reckless Moment) from the rain-slicked gutters of an eerily artificial backlot Greenwich Village, he plunges headlong into a whirlpool of lust, larceny and revenge. As Chris’ obsession with the irresistibly vulgar Kitty grows, the meek cashier is seduced, corrupted, humiliated and transformed into an avenging monster before implacable fate and perverse justice triumph in the most satisfyingly downbeat denouement in the history of American film. Free admission.

Need Info – Wynwood Social Club

{Hey All, this is me, Soul Of Miami, and I need a bit of info, if anyone knows about the Wynwood Social Club. On Saturday, we were out at the Wynwood Art Walk (of course) and we saw a banner for Wynwood Social Club on some Lombardi property. It was more or less across the street from Golen gallery. I tried searching the web for it, but came up empty. If anyone know anything about the Wynwood Social Club, who organized it, how it was promoted, where the money goes, who played, anything, please send it along. It would be greatly appreciated. You can post a comment to this post, or email it to us using the contact form. Thanks much!}

The Waybacks Star in Bay Jam 15, All Day Music Fest on the Bay

The Waybacks, one of the hottest bands in the country — playing a genre-hopping blend of bluegrass/jamgrass, honky-tonk, swing, classical music, and blues and pop — headline Bay Jam 15, held April 19 in Islamorada Founders Park.
“The Waybacks bring real star power to this year’s Bay Jam and are spectacular live,” said David Feder, president of ICE. “In addition, this event showcases the Keys’ best music with great local bands, is family-friendly, and tops it off by using the proceeds to award thousands of dollars in art and music scholarship to local students.”

Gates open at 11 a.m. for the all-day annual outdoor music fest. With free admission for kids 13 and under, $10 for adults and just $5 for students, Bay Jam is affordable for everyone. A total of 14 bands will play including David Feder and son Nyan, a reunion of the popular Blackwater Sound, and Marley Fest-favorite Baga Tricks.

The Waybacks, from San Francisco, have been described as “purveyors of acoustic mayhem.” The band has produced five albums to date and have a dedicated following. Wherever they play, high praise follows: The Washington Post described band members as “…virtuosos sharing a singular mind-set.” Billboard Magazine said “These guys can play like bandits,” and the San Jose News called them “…geniuses … whose playing stacks up to anything you’ll find.”

Bay Jam has everything needed for day of music and fun in a spectacular setting on the Florida Bay. Concertgoers (especially families and kids) can enjoy a swim at the bayfront beach just steps away from the TIB Bank of the Keys Amphitheater stage. A variety of food will be provided by two well known local restaurants – Craig’s and the Green Turtle. Soft drinks, beer, wine, and snacks will be available. Commemorative T-shirts will be on sale, there will be an art show, and noted artist Pasta Pantaleo will paint various aspects of Bay Jam as they occur.

Bay Jam, now in its fifteenth year, raises money for art and music scholarships for local high school students and in-school programs and necessary supplies. Feder proudly notes that to date, Bay Jam has awarded more than $125,000 in scholarships to local students. “It’s the community’s chance to have a great time while financially supporting the musical and artistic dreams of talented local kids,” said Feder.

Scheduled to appear are: Guitarist David Feder will perform his popular hillbilly flamenco style and son Nyan, 14, will amaze with incredible guitar talents; C.W. Colt plays tropical swamp blues; Baga Tricks brings unique rock/ Reggae; Jimmy Hawkins is the island king of the Blues; Steve Miller and Blackwater Sound play classic rock; Second Chance Band performs inspirational rock; Micah plays Caribbean country; Luke Sommer Glen Band plays Southern-fried rock; Steve Venini is a talented acoustic singer/songwriter; Stereo Underground is Key Largo’s rock warrior; and the Coral Shores High School Jazz Band brings the big band sound to the stage. The band schedule will be posted on the ICE website prior to the event.

Attendees can bring blankets and lawn chairs, but coolers are not permitted. For detailed information about Bay Jam or and the musicians, go to www.keysice.com.

ICE is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing quality entertainment and cultural events to Upper Keys residents and provides musical and arts scholarships to local students.

Surfboards And Skateboards Opening May 5 At World Erotic Art Museum 5/5/09

Gregory De La Haba, Internationally Famed Sculptor Who Created An Art Basel Furor When He Exhibited His Now Legendary Installation, “Equus Erectus: Between Nothingness And Paradise,” To Premier ‘Surfboards And Skateboards’ Opening May 5 At World Erotic Art Museum

Recalled as having been a major sensation when his sculpture of a rearing horse in tumescence scored major international attention during Art Basel 2008, Gregory de la Haba will return to South Florida, Tuesday, May 5 to launch a month long exhibit of his newest works, “Skateboards and Surfboards,” at the World Erotic Art Museum,1205 Washington Avenue.

Long respected as an accomplished draftsman who embraces a conceptual approach to his art, de la Haba’s now famed “Between Nothingness and Paradise” is considered to have been triggered as a young boy through his heritage as the grandson of a wealthy Spanish grandfather who opened the first casinos in Puerto Rico and, alternately, of a poor Irish grandfather who daily patronized the local OTB, creating for de la Haba a persona equal parts devoted to gambling reflected by his ownership of a Saratoga winner’s circle horse, as he was to art.

A cum laude graduate of Harvard University as well as a star pupil at the Museum School of Fine Arts in Boston, de la Haba attended La Universidad del Sacrado Corazon in Santurce, PR, and the Artes Plasticas in San Juan and in rapid succession thereafter, received several awards from the Copley Society which was to lead him to scholarships at the New York Academy of Art, international travels, and ultimately, to a major career as a figurative artist.

Seen through such high profile work as his acclaimed taxidermic equines first unveiled in Miami and now in a solo show at New York’s Jack the Pelican Presents gallery, de la Haba also created the Bacchanalia mural at Atlantic City’s Caesar’s Palace commissioned by John Tunney III. The artist’s latest erotically charged art is a mural project for a bar in Los Angeles commissioned by Sean McPherson, among the owners of New York’s high profile “in” spots, the Bowery Hotel, The Maritime Hotel and the Waverly Inn.

For his show at the World Erotic Art Museum, de la Haba will illustrate yet another side of his artistic persona via a series of eight surfboards using them as “canvases” for his original erotic arts scenes. Additionally, de la Haba will exhibit blow-ups of the famous works which have caused such an international furor.

On opening night, de la Haba and WEAM owner/curator Naomi Wilzig will auction off a surfboard to help fund the Carlos Collazo Scholarship created by de la Haba to honor the memory of the pioneering and gifted Puerto Rican artist who died of AIDS.

The World Erotic Art Museum is located at 1205 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach. Open from 11 A.M. to midnight, admission is $15 per person, not on under 18 admitted. Information is available at (305) 532-9336 or via www.weam.com.

Ros Warby’s Monumental Dance at the Arsht Center 4/24-25/09

roswarby_4x9_lr1

Tickets and more info

MONUMENTAL is Ros Warby’s latest award-winning solo dance work, developed in collaboration with her long standing artistic team, designer Margie Medlin and composer Helen Mountfort. MONUMENTAL is a richly layered movement piece, continuing to refine Warby’s integration of the solo dance form with 35mm film projection and solo cello. It draws from the iconic symbols of classical ballet, the swan and the soldier, bringing focus to our own sense of strength and dissolution, amidst the often irreconcilable tragedies and the sustaining power of beauty in the world today. The audience is invited to engage, through the solo dancer, with the innocent bird, and the brave, sometimes tainted soldier embedded within us all.
MONUMENTAL, received the Age Critics Commendation Award, the Robert Helpmann Award for Best Female Dancer, the Greenroom Award for Best Female Performer and the Greenroom Award for Best Composition. It also received Greenroom nominations for Best design, Best Choreography and Original Concept and Realisation, and a Helpmann nomination for Best New Dance Work.

Opening Night Gala Film
Patrik, Age 1.5
East Coast Premiere
Gusman Theatre
April 24, 2009 7:30PM
This will be the official kick off to the 11th season of the MGLFF line up. One of the funniest and entertaining movies of the year, by acclaimed Swedish Director and Screen Writer, Ella Lemhagen of Immediate Boarding (2003) and If Not (2001).

Sven and Goran make up an attractive and successful gay couple who’ve left the bustle of city life behind and relocated to a small town in their native Sweden. Gay people are few and far between here, and the couple’s arrival is met alternatively with hostility and over compensating pleasantries.

Still, the couple carries on, focusing their energies on the soon-coming results of their adoption application. Then the couple receives a letter that a Swedish child, Patrik, age 1.5, is in need of a home. Sven and Goran are overjoyed, and quickly begin preparing the house for its newest addition. When the fateful day to pick up their bundle of joy arrives, the two dads-to-be are in for a shocker. Patrik is actually a homophobic, 15 year-old juvenile delinquent. Patrick, Age 1.5 is as much about starting a family as it is about how our relationships change when we do.

This film is certain to be the perfect tonic to our Opening Gala Evening.

ART DECO FILM SERIES
Made in Miami Beach
Saturday 11 April
11:00 am
Join us for a series of films that are set (and substantially filmed) in Miami Beach in the 1940s and 50s. These films feature great directors, compelling performances, and glamorous (and not so glamorous!) hotels in Miami Beach’s golden years.

The Bellboy
Directed by Jerry Lewis
USA/1960/71 minutes/B&W
Filmed on location at the Fountainebleu Hotel, The Bellboy marks Jerry Lewis’ first film as writer-director-star. Though its gags are variable, the film works on every level. It’s both contemporary (love that jazzy MiMo architecture!) and a throwback to two-reel comedies of the late-silent/early-sound era, though it most closely resembles Jacques Tati’s M. Hulot’s Holiday (1953) in terms of structure and pacing. And, like Tati’s film, it keeps dialogue to a minimum, rendering its nearly-silent protagonist more an observer than force of action. Free admission.

The First Annual Miami Latin Gay Film Festival has been announced to make its premiere engagement April 16-19, 2009 in Miami Beach.

Festival organizer and Executive Director Jim Dobson unveiled a sneak peak at the four day event to take place in South Beach which will coincide with Miami Gay Pride Weekend.

“I am thrilled to be able to bring this exciting venture into South Beach filling a much needed gap in alternative programming for the Latino Gay community” said Dobson. “Through my six years of working with the Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, I have noticed a huge demand for Latin Gay films and programming that was not always possible. The few Latin films programmed were always the first to sell out which proved a definite demand by the community.”

The Miami Latin Gay Film Festival will open on Thursday, April 16 with a Gala Premiere presentation at the Colony Theater followed by a spectacular party, all on Lincoln Road in South Beach. The Festival will continue with screenings, panels, music events and a few surprises along the way. Closing Night Awards Gala and screening will take place on Sunday, April 19 at the Colony Theater followed by a special musical event and party.

The mission of the Miami Latin Gay Film Festival is to showcase and nurture existing and emerging creative talent while serving as a springboard and catalyst for the promotion of Gay Latin films and filmmakers as well as highlight exciting Latino talent in other areas including music.

A premier Latino Gay International Film Festival in the USA, MLGFF will eventually become the prominent venue for exhibition of the best of Gay Latin cinema and artistry from the United States, Latin America, Mexico, Spain, Portugal and beyond.

The Festival will present feature films, documentaries, shorts and special retrospective screenings. The films presented at the Festival showcase a wide variety of themes by Gay Latino filmmakers, producers, writers and actors, as well as movies that depict Gay Latino culture. It is a competitive festival with prizes and a venue where filmmakers and artists can come together with buyers and industry.

The Miami Latin Gay Film Festival will also run the “Best of the Fest” simultaneously with the Ft. Lauderdale International Film Festival as well as contributing a substantial donation from its Closing Night to Care Resource.

Born May 10th, 1965 in Germany, Reitz lived between the US and Germany throughout her childhood and took a keen interested in art due to the constant exposure of moving around due to her father’s career. After being refused entry to art school, Reitz switched career pursuits to communication and took up an advertising job with Saatchi & Saatchi, but still yearned to make art.

After the birth of her first daughter, Reitz quit her job and began painting. Working tenaciously she produced a large amount of paintings and was quickly noticed; her first exhibition sold out after two days.

Over the last 10 years, Reitz has participated in over 40 exhibitions including a solo exhibition at Dresdner Bank at Pariser Platz, Berlin, for the re-opening of Brandenburg Gate hosted by Bill Clinton and German Chancellor Schröder in 2002.

Her move to Berlin in 1993 and living with the everyday effects of Berlin’s political history had a significant political influence on Reitz. This is evident in much of her paintings which often comment on the ‘heavy hand of politics’ and civil injustices. Appropriating current events such as a Turkish girl who was shot in the middle of Berlin by her own brother for not abiding by the Muslim practices of her family and girls trying to live up to the misleading glamorous lifestyle of the rich and famous, Reitz’s work hones in on Global issues that affect our day-to-day lives.

Antonia Wright to Exhibit with Longtime Mentor the Legendary Clyde Butcher 4/17/09

The Nature of Things
Photography of Clyde Butcher and Antonia Wright
April 17th – May 29th, 2009
Opening Reception: Friday, April 17th, 2009 7 – 10pm
Renee Gallery 1331 SW 8th St, Miami, Fl 33155
clydewright
Artist Antonia Wright celebrates her Miami homecoming with a photography exhibition in conjunction with her longtime mentor, the legendary Clyde Butcher. Back from New York where she was living and studying, most recently at the International Center of Photography, Wright has teamed up with Butcher to present The Nature of Things, two divergent collections of landscape photography, opening Friday, April 17th at the Renee Gallery.

For Wright, exhibiting side by side with Butcher has brought her full circle. She began her photography career in the Everglades apprenticing for the conservation-landscape photographer. Her work has evolved to employ photography, poetry, performance, installation, and video art, using the interaction between these forms to question the world around her. Noted for The Keys Project, which examined the idea of ownership through the collecting and documenting of keys, The Nature of Things is Wright’s exploration and disruption of environment.

In her photographs, Wright documents a landscape changed by the introduction of the natural and unnatural: a body covered in grass, dirt or flowers lining a New York City Street. Using herself or another live model, Wright’s photos capture the immediacy of the performance together with the reactions of passers-by.

Wright’s vision of the natural world staging a bizarre invasion of the urban landscape contrasts sharply with the traditional, large-format, black-and-white landscape photography of Butcher. Renowned for his exquisite, beautiful images of remote and untouched landscapes, Butcher has been honored both as an artist and as a conservationist for contributing to public awareness of the environment, specifically the unique ecosystem of the Florida Everglades.

Together the work of Wright and Butcher describes a relationship with nature that is both contradictory and eerily similar. Wright’s bits of the natural world become oddities in the urban environment while Butcher’s isolated landscapes assume an exotic and alien appeal.

Fredric Snitzer Gallery is pleased to present Timothy Buwalda’s second solo
exhibition titled Dislocation. Continuing a large format, this new body of paintings
explores themes of voyage and displacement.

In Buwalda’s work, wrecked cars have been a strong metaphor for
transformation and the potential of becoming. Throughout Dislocation, the
sentiment of change follows through the physical relocation in the paintings from an
industrial setting to woodland. The forest has taken an important role in this new
body of work as natural home and original structure for protection. Buwalda builds
associations with art historical references reinterpreting the idea of ‘home’.

Dislocation features a new project by the artist titled A Roof Over My Head.
A life size one bedroom house’s roof is built and exhibited within the gallery space.
This structure plays with the concepts of architecture and protection referencing the
forest in its function.

Timothy Buwalda was born in West Palm Beach. Buwalda graduated from New
World School of the Arts with highest honors and has exhibited at the Freedom
Tower, Miami, FL and the Fredric Snitzer Gallery, Miami, FL. He currently lives and
works in Miami, FL.

Jorge Fernandez (USA), Hugo Moro (USA), Jorge Vallejos (Peru) and Luis Garcia Nerey (PR)
April 11th – May 6th, 2009
Opening Reception: April 11th, 2009 from 7:00 – 11:00 pm

Honoring Arteamericas – Miami’s premier fair for Latin American art – LURIE KAVACHNINA GALLERY is going to present Arteamericas Part “B”, a special exhibition that will be an interesting follow up of its participation in the prestigious art fair that took place in the Miami Convention Center, March 27-30. Guests will be able to view stunning sculptures by Jorge Fernandez and paintings by Jorge Vallejos, Luis Garcia Nerey and drawings by Hugo Moro at the gallery located in Miami’s Wynwood Art District, 46 NW 36 St. The exhibition will start on April 11th with an opening reception from 7:00 to 11:00 pm and will run until May 6th.

Hugo Moro. Master of perfection, Miami based artist with a new body of artworks says about his art : “I see a work in my mind, think it through down to minute details in a most obsessive way, I repeatedly envision myself going through every step of construction, conceptual and formal problems are encountered and revised”.

Jorge Fernández celebrates love and the mystery of life in his latest Welcome… sculpture collection. He wants his work to inspire others to do what they love, and maybe even what they have not had the courage to attempt before. . His creations are large in scale, 10 – 20 feet tall, and are made of first grade 304 L stainless steel. A delicate proposition of a poetic inspiration and calculated balance is involved in the creation of his monumental sculptures.

Luis García Nerey tries to manifest his own personal view of the Self, with its need for construction via human action and interaction, and the everyday living and experiencing.

Jorge Vallejos transmits clearly the intimate feeling of an anxious spirit in search of perfection. He shares with us some aspects of the beautiful philosophical experience to tread the path of the life trying to find out an accomplishment in his art.

SCOTT CAMPBELL – MAKE IT RAIN

O.H.W.O.W. proudly presents SCOTT CAMPBELL

Opening April 11, 2009 – In what will be his first major solo presentation of his works, Campbell will showcase his unique aesthetic via sculptures, paintings, drawings and photography. Scott Campbell was born and raised in a fishing camp, perched alongside a muddy bayou in rural Louisiana. With a clever knack for drawing and a fondness of stories, he began his career by doing illustration and assistant editing. Curiosity soon led him to experiment with tattooing and his immediate mastery of the art was undeniable. After a subsequent 18 month stint in Spain honing his craft, he packed up his skills and his tattoo machines and traveled for the next 5 years taking inspiration from the art and folklore of tattoo cultures all over the world.

In 2004, he opened Saved Tattoo in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Since then, it has grown to be the East Coast’s premier tattoo shop with a devout following of celebrity clientele. Campbell has the taken the blue collar grit and lore of tattoo culture and extracted a visual language and wit that are supremely refined and deliberate. He has an uncanny ability to tell a story with any medium, flesh or otherwise.

Recently, Campbell has been featured in group exhibitions at the IIleana Tounta Contemporary Art Centre in Greece, the Massimo Carasi gallery in Milan, Italy, Colette in France, Moeller Snow Gallery in New York, and O.H.W.O.W. in Miami during Art Basel Miami Beach.

ABOUT O.H.W.O.W.: Aaron Bondaroff and Al Moran’s Our House West of Wynwood (O.H.W.O.W.) is Miami’s most exciting high profile art space. Designed by Rafael de Cardenas of Architecture at Large, the venue features prominent international and U.S. based experimental art as well as innovative contemporary art forms through an alternative cross-disciplinary perspective.

Sonya Blesofsky New Work Opening at Gallery Diet 4/11/09

Sonya Blesofsky
New Work
April 11th – May 2nd, 2009
Opening Reception April 11th 7 – 10 p.m.
invitefront
Sonya Blesofsky is a sculptor and installation artist living in Brooklyn, New York. Her work is comprised of predominantly destructible, fragile materials that are warped to re-create various architectural elements. In New Work, Sonya will draw from the gallery’s immediate surroundings. The installation will address the ways in which people and businesses in Wynwood build structures to protect themselves and their possessions. The installation will contain barbed wire atop chain-link fence, window bars and front door gates, a tangle of electrical cables sprouting from a wall, caged and locked light fixtures and air-conditioning units, cinder blocks, and wooden palettes. Each element of this ghostly installation will be life-size, and made entirely of paper, glue and tape.

Sonya’s work has been exhibited previously at Mixed Greens, Smack Mellon, the Islip Art Museum, the Dieu Donne Papermill, and various other institutions around the country. She has participated in residencies at the CUE Art Foundation, Dieu Donne Papermill, and Plane Space. Artforum online declared her the “critics pick” as did The Village Voice, her work has also been written about in the San Franciesco Chronicle, NYFA Current, and the Bloomberg News.

About Diet: Located at 174 NW 23 Street in Miami, Florida Diet represents five emerging and midcareer artists. Diet’s artist roster includes Brian Burkhardt, Charley Friedman, Richard Höglund, Abby Manock, and Daniel Milewski. The work of these five artists is exhibited alongside that of an invitational program of artists from around the world.

For more information or images please contact: 305.571.2288 or nina@gallerydiet.com

Love Stories_Exhibit by Claude GUENARD at Hardcore Art Space 4/11/09

Opening April 11th, 2009,

guenard

HACS presents “LOVE STORIES” in collaboration with the CCE and a solo exhibition by French artist Claude Guenard.

Hardcore Art Contemporary Space is honored to collaborate with the Spanish Cultural Center (CCE), the Spanish Agency of International Cooperation for Development (AECID), the VISIBLE Collection and Gay Pride Celebration in Miami, in the effort to promote Human Rights and equality for all human beings through art. HACS will proudly be opening “Love Stories” from the VISIBLE collection with a gallery walk by Pablo Peinado, curator of the collection, prior to the reception and launch party at 7pm.

Opening event will also present a performance by Queen Cabaret with DJ Kiki and an after party at Vlada Bar in Wynwood.

HACS will also host a seminar on Queer Literature in conjunction with the University of Miami (UM) April 29th. Claude Guenard will show his wildly erotic drawings and mixed media work. He thrives in showing what others don’t dare to show, a certain sexuality that seems to drive the world but is kept under wrap in our Judeo/ Christian societies. His work is sometimes dominated by the sexual tension between sex and church, the tension between the forbidden and the inevitable. A description in his own words, “I topple the values of representation and I create an interaction between words, drawing and the model. I whole-heartedly abuse the voyeurism of art buffs who only think about loving my drawings.”

David Castillo Gallery is pleased to present Allow me to re-introduce myself, a group show with works by Rakel Bernie, Daniel Crews, Adler Guerrier, T. Eliott Mansa, Adria Marquez, and Aramis ‘Reilly.

As contemporary art practice begs a cyclical understanding of culture, aesthetics, and politics, so too, does a life well lived. The curatorial act introduces and re-contextualizes artwork even as artists ebb and flow in the pursuit of their careers and development as human beings. Allow me to re-introduce myself espouses art and life in self-perpetuating mimicry at its best. The artists’ works advise Poor Richard that the path to enlightenment is circuitous rather than straight.

Rakel Bernie, Adler Gutierrez, T. Eliott Mansa, and Adria Marquez endow historic content with personal sentiment. Bernie’s works of collage, graphite, watercolor, and acrylic on mylar explore the dependencies between birds, femininity, and landscape in Scandinavian mythology. Mansa deconstructs the subjects of his oil-on-canvas portraits according to familial and racial histories and their relationships to the future. The language of socio- political revolutions and protests is given a face by Guerrier’s drawing and sculpture. Marquez’s Mop series transforms materials, such as cleaning supplies, associated with working-class professions and generic tasks into highbrow art objects, implying the duality of process, class relations, and gender.

Daniel Crews and Aramis O’Reilly bring waking consistency to aesthetics like dreams remembered. Crews’ abstractions engage formalist inquiries into the structure and formation of invented and non-specific language. O’Reilly’s understanding of the language of painting as a medium allows for the evolution of narrative in his palettes and mark-making.

Adler Guerrier was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and studied at the New World School of the Arts in Miami, where he lives and works. He has exhibited at the Miami Art Museum and The Whitney Biennial 2008. His works can be found in public collections including the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, and the Studio Museum in Harlem, NYC, and have appeared in Art In America and the New York Times.

Rakel Bernie has exhibited throughout the United States. Daniel Crews studied at New World School of the Arts, Miami, and Hunter College, NYC, where he currently lives and works. T. Eliott Mansa attended the Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore. He lives and works in Miami. Adria Marquez attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. Her work has been shown in the US and internationally. Aramis O’Reilly lives and works in Miami where he teaches at New World School of the Arts.

In the David Castillo Annex, Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova presents a site-specific installation, A Night Light.

Entering the David Castillo Annex, one encounters the radius of a single nightlight in the gallery’s far corner and the weight of darkened negative space. Forced to adjust physically to the sharp contrast between a gallery’s expected luminosity and A Night Light, the viewer must also confront their psychological fear of blindness as it relates to personal direction, relationships, and self-awareness. The installation speaks to the private confines of the viewer illuminated by the darkness.

Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova lives and works in Miami. He studied at the Ringling School of Art and Design, Sarasota, FL and the New World School of the Arts, Miami. Rodriguez-Casanova was the recipient of a 2007 Reed Foundation Fellowship at the Vermont Studio Center and has received prestigious awards including the South Florida Cultural Consortium. He has exhibited in Miami and New York, and his work has been featured in publications such as The Miami Herald, Artnet Magazine, and Art in America.

New York City photographer Richie Fahey paints on his pictures in a cold water flat, surrounded by his inspiration: a towering collection of 1930s-1960s musty paperbacks and detective pulp. With the help of a postwar hobbyist’s manual, Photo Oil Coloring for Fun and Profit, he learned to transform black and white photographs into glorious color by dabbling with pigments on snapshots from the ’40s.

Fahey’s Technicolor-like style evokes lobby cards in old movie houses, covers of dimestore novels and star portraits in fan magazines like Screen and Photoplay. In defining his style, Fahey is inspired by the posed photographs from detective magazines, cinematographers of the 1940’s-50’s like John Alton, portrait photographers such as George Hurrell, and painters and illustrators like Leeteg and James Avanti.

In creating his images, Fahey plays with the noir stereotype of beautiful women gone bad and the men who love them. He is painstaking about stylistic detail. Convincing art direction, combined with vintage lighting techniques and hand coloring conspire to create alluring, ambiguous works. The viewer’s inability to pinpoint the exact time frame in which a Fahey photograph was taken, lends a certain timelessness to the artist’s work.

Fahey has created book cover art for PENGUIN, SCRIBNER, WARNER BOOKS, VINTAGE, ST. MARTIN’S PRESS, KNOPF and SIMON & SCHUSTER. Other commercial clients include SONY RECORDS, ADOBE THEATRE CO. and SPOT DESIGN. His editorial clients have included SPORTS ILLUSTRATED, GOTHAM, BUST, ATOMIC and FLATIRON magazines. Fahey produced and co-designed the cover art for the reissued James Bond novels.

Fahey has been featured in JUXTAPOSE art magazine, CAMERA ARTS, YELLOW RAT BASTARD and GARAGE. His work has been shown at the Robin Rice Gallery in New York City’s Greenwich Village . His 2004 pinup calendar, Women in Crime, slyly depicts gorgeous women caught in the act of committing various amusing felonies.

Dog Eat Dog, a tale of double-crosses and retribution is Colombia’s official entry to the Academy Awards for Best Foreign-Language Film. El Orejon is an agoraphobic crime boss who lives surrounded by telescopes in a luxury high-rise apartment in the center of Cali, Colombia. When his godson is killed he asks a voodoo priestess to avenge the murder by casting a deadly spell on the shooter, Eusebio. Miles away, Victor is hired by the boss to carry out a job, but makes a disastrous decision to break the sacred law of the crime world and keeps the cash for himself. As the stash of money passes from hand to hand, who will have the wits to be the last one standing?
WINNER: Gramado Film Festival Best Director, Best Actor, Best Cinematography
Guadalajara Mexican Film Festival Best Actor
Official Selection: Sundance Film Festival, Miami Int. Film Festival
“Dog Eat Dog” is a very funny film, not in the traditional devices of the one-liner and wisecracks, but in a more subtle language of facial expressions. The slow but confident pace, which is engaging and tense, is unusual in a film of its type and gives lie to just how boring the frantic editing of recent thrillers has become.”-Quiet Earth

Culture Kings Artist Collective Opening Reception 4/11/09

In 2006 CULTURE KINGS opened its doors in Miami’s Design District as Miami’s premier street/lifestyle boutique. Since its inception CULTURE KINGS has grown from being just a retail space into a cultural hub for Miami’s creative community. On Saturday, April 11th, CULTURE KINGS is launching its newest project the CULTURE KINGS ARTIST COLLECTIVE.
The CULTURE KINGS ARTIST COLLECTIVE was created to help start a change in the seasonal artistic atmosphere that currently exists in Miami by covering contrastive works and introducing the art scene to a new audience at the same time harnessing the energy of the creative community. The artists involved in the collective have both locally and internationally award winning works that are as diverse in subject matter as their cultural backgrounds.
On Saturday, April 11th, CULTURE KINGS ARTIST COLLECTIVE will be opening its doors to the public for its opening reception. The artist currently involved in the Collective consists of Johnny Robles, James and Karla Murray, AS1, CROME, Tatiana Suarez, 131 Projects, Michael D. Walsh, and Jose Mertz. Along with pieces by the collective artist, CKAC will also being introducing an upcoming project entitled “HOME” (Helping Our Mother Earth).
Please join us for the opening of CULTURE KINGS ARTIST COLLECTIVE Saturday, April 11th from 7-10pm. Complimentary drinks and hors d’oeuvres will be served from 7-9pm.

A Few Words From CK Founder Chris Oh
For a city that hosts one of the world’s largest art fairs, we are constantly overlooked in today’s modern art world. I feel the artistic energy in Miami is very seasonal and I created the CULTURE KINGS ARTIST COLLECTIVE to try and keep the energy in Miami constant. I found that many artists in Miami hit a ceiling that was only breakable by relocating to another major city, most often New York or Paris. I have no disillusions of turning Miami into the epicenter of the art world. Instead, I want to hopefully start a change that may lead to an awaking in the artistic community that will shift the art world’s perspective on Miami.
In addition to sparking the change in the artistic community I also wanted to introduce a new audience to the fine art world. I found that many people were intimidated to take an interest in Art because they were either unaware or misinformed of the gallery circuit and feared they might not understand a particular artistic concept. The CKAC space holds regular business hours and we invite anyone who cares or wants to take an interest in art to come by and hopefully leave a little more cultured.

As millions of people around the world prepared to ‘go dark’ in recognition of Earth Hour 2009, hundreds gathered at Miami’s landmark Bank of America Tower at International Place for a special Earth Hour kick-off party on March 26. The landmark tower – illuminated in a flood of green light – served as the backdrop for the event. City of Miami Mayor Manny Diaz and his family were on-hand to turn-off the tower’s iconic lights.

The Cleveland Orchestra announces subscription programs for its 2010 Miami Residency

The Cleveland Orchestra announces subscription programs for its 2010 Miami Residency

The Cleveland Orchestra today announced programming for its fourth Miami Residency season. The Orchestra’s Miami Residency, a 10-year project which began in 2007, includes an annual series of subscription concerts at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County, as well as a broad spectrum of music education and outreach activities in the Miami-Dade community.
Music Director Franz Welser-Möst will lead the Orchestra in the first two residency weeks, in January. Vladimir Ashkenazy will guest conduct the Orchestra for the third residency week, in March. Repertoire for The Cleveland Orchestra’s 2010 Residency includes Johannes Brahms’s Symphony No. 2 and Thomas Adès’s Violin Concerto with Leila Josefowicz as soloist during the first week (January 22-23); Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 (“Eroica”) and Leonard Bernstein’s The Age of Anxiety, Symphony No. 2 with pianist Joela Jones (Miami native and Cleveland Orchestra principal keyboard instruments player) during the second week (January 29-30); and Sergei Prokofiev’s Suite from Romeo and Juliet and Frédéric Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with Ingrid Fliter as soloist during the third week (March 26-27).
The Cleveland Orchestra Miami Residency is presented by the Musical Arts Association of Miami and the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County.
Subscribers to the 2009 Miami Residency will have priority purchase opportunity, followed by single-ticket purchasers and donors.

Cleveland Orchestra Miami Residency brings expansive range of educational and community collaboration programs to Miami-Dade
The Orchestra’s 10-year residency project is developing and expanding its community programs and will continue to include service to thousands in the Miami-Dade community through educational partnerships. The Orchestra’s residency activities in Miami were conceived and made possible with the leadership of the Musical Arts Association of Miami, the Miami-based board governing the Orchestra’s Miami Residency.
A new component of The Cleveland Orchestra’s Miami Residency in 2010 will be a partnership with the Miami Music Project. Under the artistic leadership of James Judd, the Miami Music Project is a new ensemble whose primary focus is education and outreach culminating in a collaborative arts festival. Together, The Cleveland Orchestra and the Miami Music Project will develop and perform in-school and education concert programs for Miami-Dade County Public Schools students.
In 2009, Cleveland Orchestra educational collaborations featured professional-level training for New World Symphony fellows and the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music students, including master classes led by members of The Cleveland Orchestra, reading sessions of new music, and access to Cleveland Orchestra working rehearsals. In partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the Orchestra provided Education Concerts for nearly 4,000 students in grades 4 and 5, high-school coachings for older students, and a tri-county master class in collaboration with Ransom Everglades School, plus Cleveland Orchestra Family Concerts. In the Miami-Dade community, The Cleveland Orchestra partnered in a large scale performance with Miami City Ballet in January 2009 and with Books & Books, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Overtown Youth Center, and the Wolfsonian-FIU. In all, 9,000 people participated in educational and community collaboration activities, including nearly 4,000 students in the Miami-Dade County Public Schools and others in the higher-education community.
Support for the Miami Residency is provided by the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, and the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners.

Miami Residency adds to Orchestra’s existing long-term
performance relationships in New York, Lucerne, and Vienna
The Cleveland Orchestra Miami Residency project commenced in January 2007, during the 2006-07 inaugural season of the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County. The Orchestra’s residency in Miami includes an annual series of subscription concerts at the Adrienne Arsht Center as well as service to the Miami community through education concerts and activities, and community partnership programs.
The Cleveland Orchestra’s commitment to education and community service began when the Orchestra was founded in 1918, and today more than 70,000 Cleveland-area schoolchildren, teachers, families, young musicians, and adult learners participate in the Orchestra’s educational programs in Cleveland designed to nurture a lifelong love of music. With its Florida-based educational activities, the Orchestra continues to broaden its role with universities and conservatories.
In addition to its residency in Miami, The Cleveland Orchestra currently has three other intensive and regular performing relationships, including residencies, outside of Cleveland: with Carnegie Hall in New York, the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland, and the Musikverein in Vienna, Austria. In 2010, it will launch the first year of a multi-year residency at Indiana University. Continuing a long relationship with Carnegie Hall, the Orchestra committed to a multi-year association of performances there under the direction of Franz Welser-Möst. With Carnegie Hall and the Lucerne Festival, the Orchestra is involved in a biennial commissioning project, the Roche Commissions, which includes world premiere performances by the Orchestra at the Lucerne Festival. Having performed at the 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2008 Lucerne Festivals, the Orchestra will return for concerts during the 2010 Festival. The Musikverein Residency was conceived as a long-term relationship, which includes series of concerts at the Musikverein under the direction of Franz Welser-Möst. The Orchestra’s five concerts at the Musikverein in 2003 marked the first such residency by an American orchestra in the history of that venue. In its third Musikverein Residency, the Orchestra performed four concerts at the Musikverein in October/November 2007. During their Salzburg Festival Residency in August 2008, the Orchestra and Mr. Welser-Möst made five appearances in a new production of Dvořák’s Rusalka, and performed three additional concert programs.
Music lovers interested in Cleveland Orchestra performances in Miami can be added to the priority mailing list by emailing miami@clevelandorchestra.com or calling (305) 372-7747.

Franz Welser-Möst Music Director Kelvin Smith Family Endowed Chair The Cleveland Orchestra
Franz Welser-Möst is in his seventh season as Music Director of The Cleveland Orchestra. His long-term commitment to the Orchestra extends to 2018, the Orchestra’s centennial.
Mr. Welser-Möst’s Cleveland Orchestra concerts during the 2008-09 season include major works central to the orchestral repertoire, among them symphonies by Beethoven, Bruckner, Mahler, Mozart, Shostakovich, and Richard Strauss, as well as fully staged performances of Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro (“The Marriage of Figaro”). His wide range of programming also will feature three world premieres and one United States premiere.
Highlights of Mr. Welser-Möst’s concerts with The Cleveland Orchestra during his first six seasons include many works new to the Orchestra’s repertoire that span four centuries, including ten world premieres and twelve United States premieres. In addition to numerous major works central to the orchestral repertoire, his expansive programming also has included works infrequently performed by the Orchestra. His programming has featured annual concert performances of opera, including Verdi’s Don Carlo and Falstaff, Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel, Richard Strauss’s Elektra and Der Rosenkavalier, and Dvořák’s Rusalka.
In Cleveland, Mr. Welser-Möst actively participates in community concerts and educational programs including the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra and partnerships with area universities.
Under Franz Welser-Möst’s direction, the Orchestra has toured extensively, to critical acclaim, and has become one of the most sought-after performing ensembles in the world. This partnership has earned the Orchestra unprecedented residencies in the United States and Europe while it continues to perform regularly in the other music capitals of the world. In addition to biennial residencies at the Musikverein in Vienna, the first of their kind by an American orchestra, the Orchestra continues its previously annual residencies at the Lucerne Festival with biennial residencies featuring Roche Commission projects. In August 2008, the Orchestra performed a residency at the Salzburg Festival that included five performances of Dvořák’s Rusalka. Domestically, the Orchestra and Mr. Welser-Möst have toured from coast to coast, including frequent performances at Carnegie Hall. In January 2007, the Orchestra began its 10-year residency project in Miami, Florida, where it performs at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County.
The recipient of major recording awards, including the Gramophone Award, the Diapason d’Or, the Japanese Record Academy Award, and two Grammy nominations, Mr. Welser-Möst has led The Cleveland Orchestra in recordings of live performances of Bruckner symphonies made in three celebrated concert venues: Symphony No. 5 in the Abbey of St. Florian in Austria; Symphony No. 9 in Vienna’s Musikverein; and Symphony No. 7, recorded during concerts at Severance Hall in September 2008. Mr. Welser-Most and the Orchestra’s recording of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, made live at Severance Hall in 2007, was released on the Deutsche Grammophon label.
In June 2007, Mr. Welser-Möst was named General Music Director of the Vienna State Opera beginning in 2010. His long partnership with the company has included acclaimed performances of Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, and features a new production of Wagner’s four-opera Ring cycle across the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons.
As General Music Director of the Zurich Opera beginning in 2005, and previously as its Principal Conductor (2002 to 2005), and Music Director (1995 to 2002), Mr. Welser-Möst conducted many new productions and numerous revivals, including performances of Wagner’s Ring cycle. In 2006, Mr. Welser-Möst conducted the Zurich Opera Orchestra and Chorus in a Pontifical Mass at the Vatican celebrated by Pope Benedict XVI, marking the 500-year anniversary of the Swiss Guard. Mr. Welser-Möst stepped down from his post as General Music Director at the Zurich Opera in July 2008.
Franz Welser-Möst regularly conducts leading European orchestras and opera companies, including those of Berlin and Vienna, and served as music director of the London Philharmonic from 1990 to 1996. After making his American debut in 1989, he returned frequently to the United States for appearances with major orchestras across the country.
Mr. Welser-Möst’s recordings, on both CD and DVD, have won a number of major awards. Recent releases for EMI include a DVD filmed at the Zurich Opera of Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier (the release won the Diapason d’Or Award in May 2005), and DVDs of Puccini’s La Bohème, Schubert’s Fierrabras, Mozart’s Don Giovanni, and Britten’s Peter Grimes.
Among Mr. Welser-Möst’s honors are recognition from the Western Law Center for Disability Rights, honorary membership in the Vienna Singverein, the 2003 Conductor of the Year Award from Musical America, the Silver Medal of the Region of Upper Austria, and the appointment as an Academician of the Yutse European Academy Foundation. Mr. Welser-Möst is the co-author of Cadences: Observations and Conversations, which was published in a German edition in 2007.

Vladimir Ashkenazy
Vladimir Ashkenazy has led a richly active musical life as a pianist, chamber musician, and conductor. He made his Cleveland Orchestra debut as piano soloist in August 1968 and has since appeared with the Orchestra more than 175 concerts. From 1987 to 1994, he served as the Orchestra’s principal guest conductor, having conducted the ensemble on a regular basis since his Severance Hall podium debut in 1983. For Mr. Ashkenazy’s most recent conducting engagement with The Cleveland Orchestra, at Severance Hall in September 2007, he conducted complete performances of Grieg’s Peer Gynt.
In the years since Vladimir Ashkenazy first came to prominence on the world stage in the 1955 Chopin Competition in Warsaw, he has built an extraordinary career, not only as one of the most renowned and revered pianists of our times, but as an artist whose creative life encompasses a vast range of activities and continues to offer inspiration to music-lovers across the world.
Conducting has formed the largest part of Mr. Ashkenazy’s activities for the past 20 years. Formerly chief conductor of the Czech Philharmonic (1998 to 2003), he was music director of the NHK Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo from 2004 to 2007. In January 2009, he became principal conductor and artistic advisor to the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Alongside these positions, Mr. Ashkenazy continues his longstanding relationship with the Philharmonia Orchestra, of which he was appointed conductor laureate in 2000. In addition to his performances with the orchestra in London and around the UK each season, he tours with them worldwide.
Mr. Ashkenazy is also music director of the European Union Youth Orchestra, with whom he tours each year, and conductor laureate of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra. He maintains strong links with The Cleveland Orchestra and a number of other major orchestras with whom he has built special relationships over the years, including the San Francisco Symphony and Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin, in addition to guest appearances with many other major orchestras around the world. He returned to conduct the Berlin Philharmonic in October 2007.
Mr. Ashkenazy continues to devote himself to the piano, these days mostly in the recording studio, where he continues to build his extraordinarily comprehensive recording catalogue with releases such as the 1999 Grammy Award-winning Shostakovich Preludes and Fugues, Rautavaara’s Piano Concerto No. 3 (a work that he commissioned), and Rachmaninoff Transcriptions. Most recently released are his recordings of Bach’s Wohltemperierte Klavier and Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations.
With The Cleveland Orchestra, Mr. Ashkenazy’s recordings include the four Brahms symphonies; Beethoven’s piano concertos (as both soloist and conductor); works by Debussy, Prokofiev, and Richard Strauss; and all of Rachmaninoff’s piano-orchestral works, with soloist Jean-Yves Thibaudet.
Mr. Ashkenazy has long been involved in television projects. He has developed educational programs with NHK TV, including the 1999 Superteachers, working with inner-city London schoolchildren, and the 2003-04 documentary based around his “Prokofiev and Shostakovich Under Stalin” project with the Philharmonia Orchestra.

The Scholls have been in the forefront as collectors and supporters of emerging and established contemporary artists for many years. The exhibition is on view thru August 16th.

Genetic Portraits by Nela Ochoa- Ochoa, a prolific and internationally recognized multimedia artist, works simultaneously and seamlessly in the areas of video art, sculpture, and performance to explore the genetic codes of human bodies. On view thru September 19, 2009.

Visionary Caribbean Artist at Cremata Gallery 4/3/09

Visionary Caribbean Artist at Cremata Gallery
The visually stunning work of Puerto Rican painter Edwin Guevarez arrives in South Florida
Friday, April 3rd, 2009

crematagallery03_30_09

Opening reception: Friday, April 3rd, 2009 at 7:30 p.m.
Location: Cremata Gallery. 1646 SW 8th Street. Miami, FL 33135

Indifference is not an option. The viewer cannot remain impassive to the characters in Edwin Guevarez’s universe. Contemporary but firmly rooted in Renaissance beauty the men and women that populate the artist’s canvases talk about passion and repression, virtue and chastity, inequality, lust, and desire. Luxurious fabrics frame the sitter and serve as visual commentary. Sixteenth century Italy is a constant presence in this exhibit: from the silks and taffetas to the Venetian carnival and the portraiture style.
Rigorously constructed, the work of Edwin Guevarez offers the formal structure of a trained artist who thinks seriously about his craft. The striking elegance of the painter’s opus draws the viewer’s attention to the essential questions usually masked by civilized exchange. “The Courage to Look” establishes a dialogue with Magritte, neo-Pop, and even the traditions of Late Renaissance and Mannerist portraiture that the artist would have encountered in his years as a student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
“Edwin Guevarez forces us to look at ourselves and the world around us, critically, forcefully,” stated Raúl Cremata, Director of Cremata Gallery. “We are in a universe of transformation where the critical point of view this artist proposes has renewed resonance.”
Justo J. Sánchez, curator, adds: “These are visual sonnets, odes, with different rhythms and meters. They are all inspired by humanity’s complexity, its contradictions and drama. ‘The Courage to Look’ is for me a book of poems to the beauty of the human condition.”
Edwin Guevarez, born in San Juan de Puerto Rico, has had a distinguished career having participated in important fairs (including Zurich, Arteaméricas, and Shanghai). He has had a number of one-person exhibits at Viota Gallery, one of Puerto Rico’s leading galleries for contemporary art. His work appears in several important Caribbean collections. Cremata Gallery hosts his first U.S. exhibit.

CS Gallery opening of Stabbing Hate by R. E. SANCHEZ 4/24/09

CS Gallery is proud to announce the opening of “STABBING HATE,” their new SOLO exhibition by visual artist R. E. SANCHEZ. This exhibition focuses on two series of work created between 2005 and 2007. The first series titled Stabbed In The Back: “Has Never Been In Love” Series details works created on paper and mixed media based on ideas of first introductions, loss of love, façades, the unknown and the presented vs. reality. These artworks in many aspects are very general statements about contemporary society.

The second series titled Terrorism Is A Friendly Reminder Of How Much We All Love Each Other: is created using the maps of some of the countries that have been victims to contemporary terrorist attacks. Black wax and blood red acrylic are very significant for they represent chaos, turmoil and the bloodshed caused by these attacks. These works call to question the ability of humans to interact and understand each other on multiple levels.

R. E. SANCHEZ is a Miami-based artist whose work has been exhibited regularly in non-profit organizations and gallery venues. He is a Salvadoran expatriate who in 1989 relocated to the U.S. to pursue his passion for art. He received his Bachelor of Art (BFA) from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2000. He is the current Art Director for Life Is Art, a non-profit organization dedicated to promote and support the artistic and creative communities in Miami and beyond.

Since 1994 he has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions both nationally and internationally. In 2000 he was part of a very prestigious show for Artlink@Sothebys that traveled through Chicago Illinois, Vienna Austria and Tel Aviv Israel.

Most recently his work has been exhibited as part of juried shows which have included The Hibiscus 1st Juried Art Exhibition at The Lighthouse Center for the Arts in Tequesta Florida, 20 x 20 x 20 A National Compact Competition at Louisiana State University’s Union Art Gallery in Baton Rouge Louisiana, The Blanche Ames National Juried Exhibition at The Ames Mansion at Borderland State Park in North Easton Massachusetts and Field of Vision: Beijing at the Beijing New Art Projects in Beijing China. His work can be found in many private collections.

Artist Opportunity: Lombardi Co-op Gallery

Dear Life Is Art Artists & Fans,

Some good news! David Lombardi, our erstwhile (and probably future) venue sponsor, the man who kindly donated that awesome space for our first event at 120 NW 25th Street, has decided to turn it into a co-op gallery!

What he is going to do is section it up into display spaces, much like we did for Life Is Art. Each space will be 12 x 12 feet, just like our spaces were. Artists can then rent the spaces on a monthly basis to display their work. Rent is $450.00 per month, plus a $75.00 utility fee. That is only $525 per month to have your own gallery.

You can see some photos of the space below.

This is not a work-space like Art/Center or Bakehouse, but an actual gallery space. That means you will be displaying and selling your work there. It is a co-op, so you will be surrounded by other artists, and maybe a few dealers, too. There will even be a communal kitchen and office space

As you all know, one of the most important tools in selling your work is getting it out on display. This gives you a chance to do so on your own terms. Wynwood is a fast-growing arts area, so this is in a prime location.

One more thing. David has kindly offered to donate a portion of each rental that we bring to Life Is Art to help us further our mission. This money will go directly to producing more events and promoting the Miami arts community. So, please be sure to mention that you heard about it from Life Is Art.

For all the details, contact David Lombardi at david@lombardiproperties.com. You can see their website here. We think this is a great opportunity and definitely can say that David is a true supporter of the arts.

Tom Bowker – “Constructions…Deductions And Reductions” 4/11/09

TOM BOWKER – CONSTRUCTIONS…DEDUCTIONS AND REDUCTIONS

MIAMI– Charest-Weinberg Gallery presents “Constructions…Deductions and Reductions”, a selection of Thomas B. Bowker’s new works in his first Miami solo exhibition this April 11th – June 6th, 2009.

The opening reception will take place in the gallery at 250 NW 23rd Street, Space 408 from 7-10pm Saturday, April 11th.

Bowker’s work exudes empathy and a marvel with mankind’s physical and spiritual environment. His heightened degree of awareness recognizes the nuances of the human condition, a bit like a connoisseur, which he visually communicates through a variety of dissimilar materials. He states, “This challenges me to develop meaningful relationships between the materials to communicate the message I have set out for the piece.” Inspired by a fleeting moment, gesture, a word or phrase, a form or color, Bowker begins with the message, which is often personally held belief as well as political and social commentary.

The exhibition is ripe with symbolism presenting poignant themes of manipulation and transcendence. Altared States, Cross-Double Cross, Manipulation, Provider and Transcendence (all works 2009), contemplate issues of religion and security as self-inflicted governing institutions. One’s struggle to exist within man’s own creation is readily apparent in Manipulation, which questions the inherent dichotomy of wealth and money. Here, a marionette figure anguishes over the physical weight of money’s manipulative qualities and the strings attached to wealth. In an offering of liberation, Bowker’s Provider conjures a builder, inspiring feelings of hope and security, in contrast to the dark metaphors portrayed by the exhibition’s other works.

Thomas Bowker lives and works in Key West and Northport, MI and is represented by the Charest-Weinberg Gallery in Miami.

Opening Reception For From Miami With Love 4/17/09

Friday 17 April
7:00 pm

OPENING RECEPTION FOR FROM MIAMI WITH LOVE

Some of the earliest pioneers in the rediscovery and renovation of Miami Beach’s Art Deco buildings in the 1980s and 90s were gay artists and designers. Having found inexpensive work and living spaces, they were inspired by the dazzling tropical light and growing diversity of South Beach to create art expressing homoerotic themes.

The exhibition From Miami With Love includes works by some of these local artists, as well as from gay and lesbian artists worldwide. The foundation’s objective is to create a gay art museum in Spain where works by the most relevant 20th Century artists could be presented, and to highlight the role on homosexuals in contemporary art.

In addition to the exhibit, CCE and Hardcore will offer several parallel activities to the 2009 Miami Beach Gay Pride, including the special preview of the Spanish musical Tómbola by Marisol, at the Miami Beach Cinematheque, a Spanish gay film series, and a roundtable for gay activists and experts in contemporary art on the importance of art in the fight for homosexual rights to be held in the Bass Museum.

The exhibit will be open weekdays from 10 am to 5 pm until the end of April. Free admission.
