The Cleveland Orchestra announces added Beethoven performances at the Arsht Center 1/28/10

The Cleveland Orchestra announces added Beethoven performances at the Arsht Center, January 28, 2010, including a performance of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony

Residency activities to take place at seven Miami-Dade County Public Schools, including a full orchestral performance at Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High School on January 26

Single tickets are now on sale

CLEVELAND, December 16, 2009 – The Cleveland Orchestra announces details of the first two weeks of its 2010 Miami Residency activities. Single tickets are now on sale for programs in the Orchestra’s fourth Miami Residency season, which includes a series of subscription concerts at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County as well as music education and outreach activities in the Miami-Dade community.

Cleveland Orchestra Concerts at the Arsht Center
Music Director Franz Welser-Möst will lead the Orchestra in five concerts at the Arsht Center. Repertoire for the first week of The Cleveland Orchestra’s 2010 Miami Residency includes Richard Strauss’s Don Juan, Johannes Brahms’s Symphony No. 2, and Thomas Adès’s Violin Concerto with Leila Josefowicz as soloist for concerts on January 22 and 23. The second weekend of the residency (January 28-30) celebrates Beethoven. It begins with a newly added performance of Beethoven’s “Leonore” Overture No. 3, Romance No. 2 for Violin and Orchestra with Concertmaster William Preucil as soloist, and Symphony No. 5 on Thursday, January 28, and continues with a program on Friday, January 29 (repeated on Saturday, January 30), of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 (“Eroica”), Leonard Bernstein’s The Age of Anxiety (Symphony No. 2 for Piano and Orchestra) with pianist Joela Jones, and Verdi’s Overture to La Forza del destino. The Orchestra will offer engaging pre-concert lectures to enhance the Friday and Saturday concerts. Immediately after the Thursday program, a new post-concert chamber music performance, “Beethoven with a Twist,” will be held in an intimate, club-like setting featuring musicians from the Orchestra performing in Carnival Studio Theater.
These Cleveland Orchestra performances are presented by the Musical Arts Association of Miami and the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County. The January 28, 29, and 30 concerts are sponsored by Northern Trust.
Cleveland Orchestra Miami Residency expands educational and community collaboration programs in the Miami-Dade community
The Orchestra’s Miami Residency continues to develop through expanded education and community programs that serve thousands in the Miami-Dade area. The Orchestra’s residency activities in Miami were conceived and made possible with the leadership of the Musical Arts Association of Miami, the Miami-based support organization dedicated to fundraising for the Cleveland Orchestra Miami Residency.
A new component of The Cleveland Orchestra’s Miami Residency in 2010 is an in-school performance by the entire ensemble, titled “Meet the Orchestra,” at Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High School, a Miami-Dade County Public School. Music Director Franz Welser-Möst and the full Orchestra will participate in this historic event.
Other educational activities in January include curriculum-based programs with “I Have a Dream” students at Hibiscus Elementary School in the Miami-Dade County Public Schools district and with students from various schools at Coconut Grove Cares/The Barnyard, and an orchestral and teacher workshop at Coral Reef Senior High School. Numerous in-school activities are planned, including coaching sessions with orchestral students at New World School of the Arts as well as “Musical Rainbows,” lively programs that introduce children to instruments of the orchestra, one at a time, at four Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Activities with Miami-Dade County Public Schools are supported by an Access to Artistic Excellence grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
In 2010, community partnerships will expand beyond inaugural partners (the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County, University of Miami Frost School of Music, New World Symphony, and Miami-Dade County Public Schools) to include Coconut Grove Cares/The Barnyard, the Miami-Dade County Department of Public Affairs, Miami Music Project, Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Overtown Youth Center, Sunday Afternoons of Music, Arts for Learning, Miami Music Mentors, and the Archdiocese of Miami.
Since the beginning of The Cleveland Orchestra’s Miami Residency in 2007, The University of Miami Frost School of Music has been an important institutional partner. In 2010, Frost School of Music residency activities will include choral conducting coaching sessions with Cleveland Orchestra Director of Choruses Robert Porco, a chamber composition reading session, and a series of masterclasses and forums, including a Music Education Forum led by Cleveland Orchestra Director of Education and Community Programs Joan Katz Napoli.
Support for the Miami Residency is provided by the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, and the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners. The 2010 Miami Residency sponsors are Feldman Gale, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, and Northern Trust. The residency media partners are Classical South Florida 89.7 FM, WLRN, The Miami Herald, and El Nuevo Herald.

Bass Museum Of Art And Café Bustelo Commission Limited-Edition Demitasse Cup

Bustelo Cups 005b

Bass Museum Of Art And Café Bustelo Commission Limited-Edition Demitasse Cup

Created by visual artist Dzine

MIAMI BEACH, FL (November 2, 2009) – Bass Museum of Art and Café Bustelo announce their partnership to commission a yearly series of numbered, limited-edition demitasse cups created each year by a different contemporary visual artist of Hispanic background.

As organizations with rich historical pasts and vibrant futures, Café Bustelo and Bass Museum searched for an artist whose work reflected this energy. For the first cup in the series, they recruited Chicago-based artist Carlos Rolon (a.k.a. Dzine), whose work is inspired by beauty, desire, pattern, op-art, and the juxtaposition of highbrow and Chicano lowrider Kustom Kulture. The artist himself grew up drinking this traditional Hispanic-style espresso. In fact, his mother to this day orders a monthly supply from Miami, making him a natural fit for the project. The demitasse cup reflects his signature manifestation of bold colors and patterns.

While the cups offer an opportunity to take a piece of art and culture home, the Bass Museum also invited Dzine to create an all-over, site-specific wall painting presented in their new café and lounge. The café project is part of Dzine’s solo exhibition at the Bass Museum, which includes new sculpture, paintings and installations made specially for the exhibition.

The Dzine demitasse cups — a perfect holiday gift — will be available exclusively at Bass Museum of Art and online at www.bassmuseum.org, starting November 28. Each cup retails for $20. All proceeds from sales will benefit Bass Museum of Art.

About Dzine: From site-specific wall installations, to his custom Cadillac Fleetwood and crystal encrusted sculptures and paintings, Dzine’s prolific manifestation of colors, patterns, textures and sound fuse into a modern phenomenon that reveals thought-provoking combinations. Continuously inspired by Lowrider and Kustom Kulture, Dzine has been able to bolster the semantics of this genre by stretching the boundaries further with his traditional studio practice and bringing never- before-seen products to the table that contribute a unique vernacular to contemporary art.

About Bass Museum of Art: Located in the heart of Miami Beach, the Bass Museum of Art collects and exhibits some of the world’s finest art from the past through the present. Founded in 1963 when the City of Miami Beach accepted a gift of 500 works of art from collectors John and Johanna Bass, the museum has since doubled in size to 35,000 square feet, including new galleries and outdoor exhibition spaces. In addition to housing one of the best collections of Renaissance and Baroque artwork, Bass Museum’s temporary exhibitions for 2009/2010 curated by Executive Director Silvia Karman Cubiña include Dzine; Where Do We Go From Here?/Selections from The Jumex Collection; and The Mummy Project. The Bass Museum also offers lectures, film and video series, music and dance performances, open houses, free family days, and educational symposia on a regular basis. www.bassmuseum.org

Annette Recommends Casa Toscana

PLEASE NOTE – THIS BUSINESS HAS CLOSED.

I won a gift certificate in a raffle for Casa Toscana, so we invited some good friends for a nice dinner out.  I am so glad we did, the food was absolutely amazing.  We asked the waiter for a bottle of prosecco and he brought us a very nice (extra dry) prosecco, that to our surprise was priced very reasonable and really delicious.  I ordered the pasta special, which was spinach pasta with peas and shrimp, wow, it was that good.  It was in really light red sauce and it was so good, I ate all of it.  So if you are up on Biscayne and are in the mood for some really good Italian I would suggest Casa Toscana, it is such a small cute place, you will love it.

Drake at Cameo Nightclub
INFORMATION > TICKETS
Toronto, Ontario, native Drake stepped out as a rapper and singer with major pop appeal in 2006, when he initiated a series of mixtapes. A year later he scored major exposure when his cocky and laid-back track “Replacement Girl,” featuring Trey Songz, was featured on BET’s 106 & Park program as its “Joint of the Day.” He raised his profile throughout the next several months by popping up on countless mixtapes and remixes, he gradually became one of the most talked-about artists in the industry. By the end of June 2009, “Best I Ever Had,” a promotional single, had climbed to number two on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Celebrate the new year in Miami with a special performance by Drake at Cameo Nightclub.

Armed with a slew of new CDs and enough confidence to rebuild Hadrian’s Wall, Steve Angello has destroyed every event he has taken on this year. His tracks are on everyone’s playlist, first up is arguably his globe-straddling Moby remix of ‘Raining Again’. Then it was ‘Tell Me Why’ with Sebastian Ingrosso and ‘Be’ with Laidback Luke. And then ‘Be’ returned in spirit (and b-line) for ‘Show Me Love’ with original vocalist Robin S and Laidback Luke in tow, smashing clubs and Top Ten charts into tiny pieces everywhere it was dropped. Kick off your new year with a man who could be shaking any club, but chose to celebrate at Mansion.

South Florida NORML, PUFMM, Patients Out Of Time, ACLU of Florida, Florida Green Party and various other organizations will have informational booths with literature and handouts to help educate about community issues and the medical marijuana campaign in Florida.

The event will work to raise funds and awareness for PUFMM, South Florida NORML and Patients Out Of Time’s medical marijuana campaign and the protection of patients’ rights. Previously, a person’s right to use medical necessity as a defense to marijuana charges has been upheld by several appeals courts in Florida. Marijuana has proven therapeutically useful in treating numerous medical conditions including muscle spasticity, arthritis, and the nausea related to AIDS and cancer chemotherapy. About 700,000 Florida registered voters need to sign the petition in order for the issue to get on the ballot. Currently there are 14 states that have laws allowing marijuana to be used as medicine.

In addition there will be vendors and small businesses promoting and selling their merchandise, including The Wallflower Gallery, Xango, Ragamufyn, 75rabbit, Between Spirit & Stone Jewelry, Progressive Rags, Emerald City Imports, Crystal Fun Design, Sergio Torres, Alan Glover, Bambooey Didgeridoos, Kokanut Kingz, Roostas No. 5 and selected independent corporations.

Production support provided by Ploppy Palace Productions, Atlas Sound Productions, Anamaze Productions, Turk Masters Cymbals and 7th Circuit Productions. The 12th Annual Medical Marijuana Benefit Concert at Tobacco Road is currently looking for supportive sponsors and unique vendors to help to build up the community outreach and contribute to the cause.

The 12th Annual Medical Marijuana Benefit Concert at Tobacco Road is sponsored by Ploppy Palace Productions, OnlineGigs.com, Antidote Productions, Artists For Community Evolution, The Wallflower Gallery, Music Art Love, Borras & Latino, Printed Things & Custom Collectibles and South Florida NORML.

Rodolfo Vanmarcke presenting Modern Solitudes at ArtDecoMiami 12/17/09

flyer
ArtDecoMiami 1528 Alton Road, Miami Beach, Fl 33139
Date: from 12/17/09 to 01/14/10

This coming thursday, December 17th, the venezuelan artist Rodolfo Vanmarcke will be presenting his series “Modern Solitudes”, showing a selection of 18 photographs in different formats. This exhibition is organized by ArtDealerMiami, in the gallery ArtDecoMiami (Miami Beach, FL).

Vanmarcke is pleased to announce that this will be his first solo exhibition in United States; although he has exhibited several times in group exhibitions in the city of Miami, and has also received from the judges the “Best in Show” award in the “XII Salon of Latin American and the Caribbean Art” (Broward College gallery).

“Modern Solitudes” reflects the artist vision towards the contemporary society, by stating that “The contemporary human being has buried himself in a devastating solitude due to the triumph of industrialization. We have systematically celebrated the mass manufacture of products that are elaborated under the slogan “Our greatest product is the human capital”. Ironically, that same resource is already a prefabricated product, properly packed with the in vogue clothing, the technology of the moment and under the media diet of the day. We have transformed ourselves into isolated self-idols within a temple devoid of believers; crammed full of needs that are in fact invented by a society of identical people.

We are convinced of being completely free. Universally, there hasn’t been a time with greater liberty than the actual one: a tremendous range to be chosen is presented as a fold-out menu; nevertheless there has not been a better moment than today to celebrate our sameness. But is not an equality based on ethical values, but an equality based on the depersonalization and the absolute self-exile.

“Modern Solitudes” begins and ends with this condition.”

On January 19, Miami will experience what 2.5 million people in Europe, Canada, and U.S. cities including Washington D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Boston, and most recently, Atlanta have been astounded by the extravagant multimedia equestrian celebration for the eyes and ears that is Cavalia. Guests who attend the show will “ooh” and “ahh” in amazement at the beauty of the more than 60 4-legged artists in this eclectic cast. Crowds will cheer and rise in their seats during the incredible performances of some 40 2-legged artists, including acrobats, aerialists, riders, musicians and dancers. From January 19 – January 31, under the White Big Top at Bicentennial Park in Downtown Miami an exquisite, fast- paced, unforgettable 120-minute performance featuring the harmony between horse and man will find its home. Cavalia marks the Adrienne Arsht Center’s very first off-site production, and underlines the Center’s commitment to provide world-class, diverse programming to the city of Miami, and the South Florida community.
cavalia2
This spectacular production was created by Cirque du Soleil co-founder, Normand Latourelle, and is often compared to Cirque for the way it revolutionizes equestrian and performing arts, much like Cirque revolutionized the circus. Cavalia will stop in Miami, as it makes the rounds to major cities on its North American tour, after touring in Europe for two years. “I had the opportunity to bring Cirque du Soleil’s Cirque Réinventé to Miami in 1989,” says Normand Latourelle, Cavalia founder and artistic director. “I am extremely proud to introduce a new type of show to Miami on the 20th anniversary of this milestone. I hope that the people will embrace Cavalia’s magic.”

“We are honored to co-present such a beautiful performance such as Cavalia,” said M. John Richard, President and CEO of the Adrienne Arsht Center. “South Florida will fall in love with this highly acclaimed, artistic demonstration of the unique bond between humans and horses.”
cavalia3
Cavalia is not just a show for horse-lovers. Nor is it a show just for Cirque-fanatics. It is a lavish orchestration of multimedia, equestrian and performing arts designed to astound and entertain people of all ages and backgrounds. Under the world’s largest touring Big Top, which rises 100 feet above ground and spans more than 26,264 feet, 60 of the most magnificent creatures on the planet will express themselves in all their beauty, grace and strength on a 160-foot wide stage. While the horses gallop and cavort and, at times, run free completely unbridled, the show will incorporate unbelievable acrobatics, original live music and stunning special FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Friday, November 20, 2009and lighting effects to create a dreamlike setting, making it apparent to see why this show has become a global sensation.

Across North America and Europe, Cavalia has enthralled audiences and been praised by critics for its captivating and unique experience. CNN’s Larry King raved, “The greatest show I have ever seen!” The Washington Post exclaims, “Impressive, highly refined, indeed a wonder!” The New York Times describes the show as “a celebration of the unique emotional and physical bonds between humans and animals,” while O Magazine exclaimed that “The wildly beautiful stallions of Cavalia leave audiences with their hearts galloping,” and the Los Angeles Times summed it up with “Blissful play, haunting score…striking aerial grace.” Madrid’s El Pais remarked “Like in a dream,” while Berlin’s Zeitung said “Cavalia shows flawless artistry.” Lastly, Amsterdam’s De Telegraf proclaimed Cavalia as “A fairytale for the entire family!”

Cavalia features 12 different breeds of horses, including Arabians, Lusitanos, Spanish Pure Breed, Quarter Horses, and Paint horses from France, Canada, Spain and the United States. The featured 2-legged artists represent the nations of the United States, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Kyrgyzstan, Morocco, Portugal and Russia.

The significance of the 4-legged performers can also be seen in the signature “C” of Cavalia’s logo, with a horse’s head depicted in the letter (the “l” in Cavalia is also representative in the shape of a horse’s leg).

TICKETS – For its exclusive run in Miami, Cavalia will be presented under the White Big Top pitched in Bicentennial Park in Downtown Miami. Tickets go on sale Sunday, November 22. Regular tickets are priced from $34 to $89.50. And, if just sitting in the stands is not enough for you, the show can be customized for the complete VIP experience from $129 to $180, including a Horse Lovers Package that lets patrons tour Cavalia’s stables, and the Rendez-Vous Package that includes a tour of the stables, a cocktail/dinner reception and much more. Special pricing available for children, students, and seniors.

SHOWTIMES – Opening night will be Tuesday, January 19. During Cavalia’s Miami run, there will be nightly shows except Mondays, matinee and evening shows on Saturdays and early shows on Sundays. For more information, a detailed list of show dates and reservations, call 1-866-999-8111 or visit Cavalia.net.

Target Wednesday After Hours at The Frost Art Museum with Tibetan Mandala De-Construction and Gelek Rimpoche Lecture 1/6/10

Mand-B1
Target Wednesday After Hours Series Continues with Lecture by Gelek Rimpoche and Tibetan Mandala Closing Ceremony

The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum’s free monthly event series, Target Wednesday After Hours, continues with a lecture entitled “Engaging Wisdom and Compassion” by Venerable Gelek Rimpoche and the Mandala closing ceremony by the Monks of the Deprung Loseling Monastery. The event, free and open to the public, will be held at The Frost Art Museum at FIU on January 6, 2010 from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m.

Born in 1939 in Lhasa, Tibet, Gelek Rimpoche has played a crucial role in the survival and transmission of traditional Tibetan Buddhism. Mentored by some of Tibet’s greatest Buddhist masters, he is among the last generation of Tibetan Lamas fully trained in ‘Old Tibet’, pre-1959.Rimpoche is an internationally recognized spiritual teacher and bestselling author of Good Life, Good Death and The Tara Box: Rituals for Healing and Protection from the Female Buddha, as well as over 30 teaching transcripts. He is also the founder and spiritual director of Jewel Heart. (www.jewelheart.org)

The Monks of the Deprung Loseling Monastery, on tour with The Mystical Arts of Tibet, will deconstruct the Mandala during the Mandala closing ceremony. The Mandala of colored powders, or dul-tson-kyil-khor in Tibetan, is an ancient Tantric Buddhist art form created for the purpose of healing and re-consecrating the earth. The Monks painstakingly created the Mandala by carefully laying grains of colored sand in iconographic patterns and geometric shapes over a three day period. The Mandala will be dispersed into a local body of water, in order to disseminate the Mandala’s healing properties. This event is co-sponsored by FIU’s Program in the Study of Spirituality, Asian Studies and The Theta Alpha Kappa Religious Honors Society.

Target has teamed up with The Frost Art Museum to sponsor an event series designed to complement The Frost’s exhibitions. These events give visitors the chance to meet contemporary artists and engage with controversial art, live music, talks, films, dance, and performance art, while providing an excellent opportunity to socialize with other people interested in the arts. FIU is the first university in the world to offer an undergraduate certificate program in the study of spirituality. The new program is an outgrowth of the Dalai Lama’s first visit to FIU in 1999, when the Tibetan religious leader challenged institutions of higher learning to train the “warm heart” as well as the “good brain.” The spirituality certificate combines the study of traditional religion-based spirituality and its practical applications for a wide array of fields, including pre-med, pre-law, psychology, nursing, fine and performing arts, business, journalism, education and a host of other disciplines for which such a credential would be of professional or personal value. Olga Viso lecture at The Frost Art Museum The Green Critics Lecture Series 1/29/10

The Frost Art Museum Presents The Green Critics’ Lecture Series with guest speaker
Olga Viso.

The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum’s Steven & Dorothea Green Critics’ Lecture Series welcomes Olga Viso, director of the Walker Art Center, for a lecture on Friday, January 29 at 7:30 pm. This free event will take place at the Wertheim Performing Arts Center at FIU’s Maidique Campus and is open to the public.

Olga Viso began her tenure as director of the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, in January 2008, after 12 years at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution, the final two years as director. Viso distinguished herself as a curator, scholar, and administrator at the Smithsonian Institution and rose quickly to leadership at the Hirshhorn.

Under her tenure, the Hirshhorn shifted its focus to present a decidedly more contemporary program of international art produced in all media. She organized or co-organized significant exhibitions of leading artists such as Ana Mendieta (2004), Juan Muñoz (2001), and Robert Gober’s highly celebrated installation at the 2001 Venice Biennale, as well as group shows, including Distemper: Dissonant Themes in the Art of the 1990s (1996) and Regarding Beauty: A View of the Late Twentieth Century (1999), which she co-curated with Neal Benezra. Viso currently serves on the advisory board of the Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia and the Cintas Foundation in New York City, two non-profit organizations that support emerging artists and the production of new art through artist residencies and fellowships.

Since 1981, The Frost Art Museum has enhanced its exhibitions and educational programs with the Steven & Dorothea Green Critics’ Lecture Series, which has introduced numerous art world luminaries to the South Florida community. Internationally renowned artists, museum curators, scholars and critics have spoken on a variety of art topics to audiences of over 800. Past speakers have included: Claes Oldenburg, Philippe de Montebello, Alex Katz, Maya Lin, Terry Gross and Marina Abramovic.

sze-brkll-SofM-evite
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 12th, 3PM
As the Holiday season approaches, we are reminded of our many blessings as well as the challenges faced by other families. This time of year is also symbolic of hope and it is in this spirit that we have joined forces this year with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital with the support of Romero Britto and Saks Fifth Avenue and many others to host “Kids for Kids- A Season of Miracles”, a fundraiser event benefiting St. Jude.
With the goal of instilling benevolent values and inspiring the next generation to give, the “Kids for Kids” is also an opportunity for our children to bring a gift for the children of St. Jude. To ensure that gifts are appropriate for the special needs of many of these children, please be sure to adhere to the gift guidelines below. Although the primary goal is to raise money for the hospital, we ask that you encourage your children to bring a gift to donate. It is a small price for an invaluable and rewarding life lesson.
This is a family event and activities for the little ones will include photos with Santa Claus, face painting, complimentary cotton candy and popcorn, entertainers, toys, games for children, live band playing Christmas music, and will end with the official lighting of the Segafredo Christmas tree.
This is an extraordinary fundraising effort to raise money for St. Jude. St. Jude will hold an onsite SILENT AUCTION featuring products from a variety of sponsors including:Saks Fifth Avenue, Genius Jones, Milan Kitchens, Venue Magazine, Segafredo Brickell and many more. In addition to this, St. Jude will set up a registration table where they will be accepting donations by checks and cash with 100% of the proceeds going directly to St. Jude Research Hospital

The event will take place on Saturday, December 12th starting at 3 PM at Segafredo Brickell, 1421 S. Miami Avenue in Brickell.

Bakehouse art complex presents Sensory Overload curated by Lauren Wagner 12/12/09

Sensory Overload. Curated by Lauren Wagner
In its 2,600 square foot Main Gallery, BAC artists confront the idea of the overwhelming sensory qualities of Art Basel in Sensory Overload. Based on the traditional five senses- touch, hear, see, smell, and taste, BAC artists cross and blend these senses together to create an experience of a sequence of synesthetic encounters, attacking one sense and at the same time evoking another.

5X7
The BAC presents a small works exhibition 5X7 in its Swenson Gallery. All of the work measures 5″ X 7″ or 7″ X 5″. The show will consist of a variety of media, from painting, drawing, sculpture, fiber art and on. There is sure to be something to please every aesthetic. Patrons are encouraged to purchase these small, unique works of art at $100.00 each.

When a guest purchases a piece from this exhibition, a photo will be taken of them and their new purchase. The picture will then be hung on the wall in place of the piece, thus becoming part of the exhibition.

Arnaldo Anaya Lucca Adam and Eve At Luis Perez Galería at the Awarehouse 12/12/09

Arnaldo Anaya – Lucca. Adam and Eve.

One of today’s leading fashion photographers, Arnaldo Anaya-Lucca, will be presenting his first fine art solo exhibition, “Adam and Eve,” at Luis Perez Galeria in Wynwood, Miami during this year’s Art Basel Miami Beach, hosted by Manuel Norena. Anaya-Lucca is a renowned fashion photographer known for capturing the world of Ralph Lauren rethinks classic imagery as his own personal expression of events in history.
For his first exhibition of its type, Anaya-Lucca rethinks classic imagery in a more personal way, animating events in history with a curiosity that is both critical and sensual. Adam and Eve is a nude study inspired by 17th and 18th Century renaissance paintings. The images reflect the struggle of sensuality, temptation and shame that underlies the human condition as well as the joy of sexual innocence. The artist also wanted to address situations where the line between internal and external sense of self was/is in conflict throughout human history. The set design for the exhibition is also by Manuel Norena with Jed Root in New York.

Diana Lowenstein Fine Arts presents Carlos Betancourt Solo Exhibition Lapidus Infinitus 12/12/09

Carlos Betancourt. Solo Exhibition.
Lapidus Infinitus
In Betancourt’s most recent photographic artwork, the artist continues to assemble explosive compositions consisting of thousands of photographs of objects, people, flowers and other elements that occupy the superb glitzy realm of beauty for which he is known. The images appear in their full kitsch splendor, possessed by an enchanting light and seemingly crystallized by a magical sorcerer
In addition, there is a sprawling three-dimensional installation of multiple column pedestals, each supporting an accumulation of auspicious objects to be worshipped. A symmetrical assembly creates spaces for interaction within this fantastical world. As with the photographic compositions, this large-scale installation, Portrait of a Garden, iconizes these pop objects the artist has gifted with a unique sense of dignity.

PROJECT ROOM – Geo Graphic
A group exhibition brings together gallery and guest artists including Luis Alonzo Barkigia, John Bailly, Clifton Childree, Irene Clouthier, Felice Grodin, Jill Hotchkiss, Laura Kina, Alberto Latorre, Michael Loveland, Michael Scoggins, Carlos de Villasante, and Annie Wharton. Each artist is working with the same initial element, a world globe, and transforming it, thereby providing their own vision.

Money Makes Art at artformz Alternative 12/12/09

Money Makes Art
Natasha Duwin, Donna Haynes, Alette Simmons-Jimenez, Sibel Kocabasi, PJ Mills, Rai Escale, Ray Paul, Gisela Savdie, Ray Paul, Rosario Rivera-Bond, Henning Haupt, Guillermo Portieles
Artformz winter group show addresses the current global concern for “money”. How money, the abundance of it, or the utter lack of it, affects everyone’s lives is the topic of conversation everywhere. The outcome has been decidedly personal with each artist coming up with decidedly different work in each of their own styles, yet all reflect the current focus on currency. Everywhere there seems a conversation of sales, consumption, need, the economy, the paycheck, the job, retirement, bills, mortgages, college funds, layoffs, and studio rent.

The dilemma is more relevant now as artists tiptoe through this recession. While we listen to the hype and propaganda on how everything is getting better, the work struggles to get made and each artist finds there own creative way to survive. Money certainly does facilitate making art, but at the same time, the lack of an abundance of money in the wrong hands, may just possibly make better art.

Carlos Irijalba Twilight at Dina Mitrani Gallery 12/12/09

Carlos Irijalba. Twilight.
Irijalba, (Spain, 1979) presents us with an exhibition about the way in which Western culture perceives reality through the use of artificial light. The placement of a light fixture, like those used in football stadiums with expectant audiences, within a natural, untouched forest creates a surreal atmosphere. The focus shifts away from the habitually illuminated scene, to the artifact that emanates light.

The artist generates an amalgam of contrasts: western culture, which reconstructs reality with lighting effects with the eastern concept, which focuses more on shadows. We are faced with a critique of the society of the spectacle, the insignificance, the noise and the general conformity that dominates contemporary culture.

Dina Mitrani Gallery opened in November 2008 and specializes in international contemporary photography. The gallery currently represents eight emerging and mid-career artists and will be offering a lecture series and photo-based books. The gallery is committed to promoting its artists, as well as working with independent curators to produce unique group exhibitions

Beloved Structure The Argentine Legacy at Alejandra Von Hartz Gallery 12/12/09

Beloved Structure: The Argentine Legacy.
Curated by Eva Grinstein
Fabián Burgos, Martín Di Paola, Marcolina Dipierro, Verónica Di Toro, Lucio Dorr, Silvia Gurfein, Silvana Lacarra, Adriana Minoliti, Karina Peisajovich, Pablo Siquier and Andrés Sobrino.
Latin American Abstract Geometric painting, with its strong ties to Europe yet with its undeniably great, regional protagonists, has left an enormous legacy to the contemporary art scene of the continent.

In this opportunity, Alejandra von Hartz Gallery has invited the curator, Eva Grinstein, to present a carefully selected group of artists, who inherited and continued this rich tradition in Argentine art. They “reinterpret and—in a way— render homage to the masters of the vanguard, who changed the direction of Latin American art in the mid 20th century.”

Grinstein notes: “This selection presents the work of eleven accomplished Argentine artists of the new generation, who through the use of very diverse materials and techniques—painting, reliefs, light pieces, and drawings—reignites and updates the passion for structure that characterized the artists that challenged the paradigms of representation.”

Target Wednesday After Hours Series Continues with Immurare and “Censorship in the Arts” panel

The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum’s free monthly event series, Target Wednesday After Hours, continues with Immurare, the fall 2009 Bachelor of Fine Arts student exhibition, and a panel discussion entitled “Censoring the Arts” on Wednesday, December 16, 2009 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at FIU, located at 10975 SW 17th Street, Miami, FL 33199.

Twice annually, the graduating class of Bachelor of Fine Arts students at FIU’s School of Art & Art History present a series of works produced during their tenure at FIU. Immurare, curated by professor Pip Brant, is based on the 12th Century Latin/French word for confined within walls as first used byFrench author Godefroi de Leigni in his poem “Lancelot.” Lancelot was immured in a tower with no hope of escape; The BFA class of fall 2009 parallels Lancelot in their rebellion against confinement and search for purity and truth. The exhibition walk-thru will be Friday, Dec. 11 at 3:30pm.

Also this evening, “Censorship in the Arts,” a panel discussion, organized in collaboration with Phillip Church, FIU professor and director of the FIU Alternative Theatre, will take place at 7pm. Panelists include: Phillip M. Church, Moderator; Joseph Adler, Artistic Director, GableStage; Patrick de Bokay, Executive Director, Miami World Cinema Center; Marina Pareja, FIU Theatre Dept; Michael Yawney, FIU Assistant Professor, Resident Dramaturg.

Aldo Menéndez. “Abstractomicina”. Collage / paper. 7 1/2″ X 10 1/2″
Opening reception: Friday, December 11th, 2009. 7:00 p.m.
Location: Cremata Gallery. 1646 SW 8th Street. Miami, FL 33135
Dates: From November 30th, 2009 – January 30th, 2010
Admission: Free

Painters that have never experimented with abstraction, do so now. They have come together at Cremata Gallery for the show “Abstractomicina”, which includes 80 works in total. Forty-seven renowned contemporary artists present paintings specially completed for this exhibit, departing from their usual métier, while maintaining their personal style. In addition, ten sculptors, plus a selection of paintings by twenty-three masters never exhibited before, will help us remember, comprehend and appreciate the Havana of the 50’s.
An installation by Aldo Menendez submerges the observer in the construction of modern Havana, buildings that were raised up surrounded by scaffolding, which served as inspiration for the constructivist movement, and brings to mind the works of Mario Carreño, Jose Mijares and Hugo Consuegra.
Some say neo-abstraction is what is happening now …who knows!!! But what is clear is that the exhibit “Abstractomicina”, serves as an antidote for the excessive use or abuse of figuration, it’s refreshing and has no secondary effects.
Artists included in “Abstractomicina” are Gustavo Acosta, Ana Albertina, Julio Antonio, Jorge Arango, Néstor Arenas, Juan Asencio, Waldo Balart, Yovani Bauta, Mario Bencomo, Giovanni Bosch, Adriano Buergo, Luís Cabrera, Carlos Cárdenas, Alberto Jorge Carol, Ramón Carulla, Jorge P. Castaño, Humberto Castro, Hugo Consuegra, Salvador Corratge, Humberto C. Cruz, Arturo Cuenca, Liliam Cuenca, Sandu Darie, Agustín Fernández, Luís Manuel Fernández, Meme Ferre, Ivonne Ferrer, Joaquín Ferrer, Flora Fong, Marta Fonseca, Lia Galletti, Carlos García, Enrique “Gay” García, Fernando García, Mysora García, Florencio Gelabert, Julio Girona, Victor Gómez, Ernesto González Puig, Armando Guiller, Osvaldo Gutiérrez, Pedro Hernández, Carmen Herrera, Pepe Herrera, Guido Llinás, Nelida López, Rafael López Ramos, Carlos M. Luís, Nuncio Mainieri, Leonel Matheu, Julio Matilla, Aldo Menéndez, Aldo Damian Menéndez, José Mijares, Heriberto Mora, Glexis Novoa, Carmen Oña te, Pedro de Oraa, Sergio Payares, Angel Peña, Natacha Perdomo, Rosa María Pérez, Lourdes Porrata, Guillermo Portieles, Rene Portocarrero, Jesse Ríos, Enrique Riveron, Emilio Héctor Rodríguez, Eduardo Rubén, Rubén Ruiz Caballero, Baruj Salinas, Carlos Sanjurjo, Cesar Santos, Raúl Santoserpa, Lolo Soldevilla, Rafael Soriano, José Toñarely, Antonio Vidal and Manolo Vidal.
Come to the gallery to enjoy “Abstractomicina”, a special presentation for this season of art fairs and holidays.

BAND BIOS:
Break Science is the culmination of a career of beat bending by its brainchild, Adam Deitch. Whether performing a DJ set with drums/programming or helming a live band, Break Science is club music in the vein of a “live mix tape,” blending live trip-hop, broken-beat, dub, drum & bass and hip-hop. The live band features some of the most talented musicians on the New York scene today (sidemen and producers for the Fugees, G-Unit, Matisyahu and more). Guests have included luminaries such as Wyclef, Matisyahu, Rob Swift of the Executioners and Talib Kweli. Adam Deitch, the son of two professional funk drummers, first picking up sticks at the age of two. Adam’s career crosses genres but has focused on hip-hop, funk and jazz, where he’s played the role of both drummer and producer. Inspired by hip-hop at an early age – in particular, by Public Enemy and Eric B and Rakim – Adam began his production career by making loops on a tape deck in his bedroom. He’s gone on to produce tracks for some of today’s top emcees, including 50-Cent, Redman, Talib Kweli, Snoop Dogg, KRS-One, MF Doom, J-Live, Jurassic 5 and Immortal Technic.

Check out Break Science.

BoomBox is Producer/Engineer/DJ/Drummer Russ Randolph and Producer/DJ/Vocalist/Guitarist Zion Rock Godchaux. This pair of dynamic artists uses their rich musical history and their vision of music and popular culture to deliver a style of music distinctly different from anything heard or seen in music today. This signature sound and show brings live music to a new, elevated level. BoomBox evolved through the common visualization of two forward-thinking artists from diverse musical backgrounds. Raised by supportive and musically inclined parents, both Godchaux and Randolph had an obsession with music at very young ages. Godchaux, who grew up with deeply embedded rock and roll roots, began playing drums at the age of two, and played guitar and wrote his own songs as a teen. During the 90s, Godchaux was a well-received touring DJ based out of the San Francisco area. Randolph began as a young drummer, but it’s what was happening behind the scenes that attracted him most. As much producers as they are musicians, it is Randolph’s knack for engineering, Godchaux’s understanding of soundscapes and the duo’s rich ability to improvise live that keeps BoomBox resonating at higher levels.

Check out BoomBox at.

Consisting of Michael Travis and Jason Hann of The String Cheese Incident, EOTO mixes the organic sounds of live drums, keyboards, vocals, bass, percussion, and guitar through a variety of programs and gadgets to create a style of music that is more likely found in a dance club, then a live music theater. What sets EOTO apart from other artists in this emerging genre is how the music is created. While some artists may spend hours pre-mixing samples and elements of music for their live show, EOTO uses nothing pre-recorded, giving them the ability to approach each song with on-the-spot spontaneity and 100% live improvisation.

Annette Recommends Urbanite Bistro – UPDATE CLOSED

UPDATE – THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED.

Went to Urbanite Bistro during Art Basel, we ordered off of the late night menu, the prices where very reasonable.   The staff was very nice the service was a little slow, but we where in no hurry.  The food was really, really good.  They first served us some complimentary bread with some awesome pesto dipping sauce, it was so good had to ask for more.  I had ordered the shrimp club, and I have to say this was an amazing club, it was a little spicy, which is the way that I like it.   James ordered the shrimp corndogs, he only got three but they where delicious, it came with spicy mustard and mango ketchup. Mark ordered the cubano sandwich; it weighted a lot, and was so yummy.  I want to go back to see what there regular menu looks like.

Annette Recommends Lecca-Lecca Gelato Caffe’

I have to say that Lecca-Lecca Gelato Caffe’‎ has the best gelato I have tried, their fruit gelato is the best.  My favorite is the melon and banana, but all of their flavors are great and yes I have tried just about every one of them.  So if you are on South Beach and are craving gelato this is the place to go.

Family Builders USA invites to its 2nd Annual Gala 12/12/09

Family-Builders-Gala-Invitation-ENG
Family Builders USA will host its 2nd Annual Gala,
“Una Noche en Familia,”
this Saturday December 12th at 8:00 PM at the Hilton Miami Downtown,
to benefit its social programs and to recognize the work of its tireless supporters during the organization’s six years of commitment to South Florida.

Family Builders USA announced its 2nd Annual Gala, “Una Noche en Familia,” to be held on Saturday December 12th, at the Hilton Miami Downtown. Celebrated with great success since its inaugural year, this year’s gala celebrates Family Builders USA’s six years of community service helping families in Miami.

With “Una Noche en Familia,” Family Builders USA aims to raise funds for its South Florida assistance programs aiding victims of domestic violence, child abuse, alcoholism and drug addiction, offering marital therapy and seminars as well as immigration and legal assistance, and helping the disadvantaged meet basic needs. The Office of the Mayor of Miami-Dade County, the Honorable Carlos Alvarez, will commemorate this special occasion by issuing a proclamation declaring December 12 “Family Builders USA Day.”

After walking a fabulous Red Carpet along with local and international celebrities such as Fanny Lu, Ariel López Padilla, Fernando Arau, Poncho De Andas, Leonardo Rocco, Rodner Figueroa, Miguel Varoni, Catherine Siachoque, Javier Ceriani, Vanessa Hauc, Raúl González, Angélica Vale, Michelle Vargas, Laura Ferretti, Greilys Gil, Maritza Rodríguez, Tanya Charris and the hosts of Paparazzi TV as well as esteemed politicians such as the State Representative Julio Robaina, the City of Miami Commissioner, Mark Sarnoff, the North Miami Mayor, Honorable André Pierre, all guests will enjoy a VIP Reception with exclusive entertainment including an energizing performance by the Venezuelan singer Marger who brings her unique electro acoustic sound to the Gala. After the VIP Reception, guests will continue to enjoy a unique culinary experience, while they have the opportunity to participate in a Silent Auction featuring fine arts, exotic travel destinations, and sports memorabilia.

This elegant gala will also serve as a fitting venue for the launch of the Autonomous University of the Caribbean’s new North Miami campus, the first of its kind in the U.S. for a Colombian university. The Office of the Mayor of North Miami, the Honorable André Pierre, and the Board of Commissioners, will be on hand at the Gala to commemorate the landmark opening by issuing a special proclamation declaring November 18 “Day of the Autonomous University of the Caribbean.”

The evening will be complete with an elegant runway show by celebrity fashion designer Samy Gicherman, the soulful rhythms of the Stefans International Beats Orchestra, the participation of an angelic children’s choir, and many other surprises in a fun-filled night of networking for a good cause.

Photographs – Art Basel Week – Sunday 12/6/09

Art Basel Week on Sunday, December 6, 2009. For the last day of Art Basel we stated out at the Scope and Art Asia in Wynwood, this is always a good art show and it was again this year. I had not seen enough of  Aqua Art Miami so we head back there for another run through and still one of my favorite shows. We hit some of the smaller fairs around Aqua before heading over to Sculpt Miami. Now we head back over to South Beach to the Miami Beach Convention Center to see a little more of Art Basel, wow it is so big, you can not possible see it all. We go over to see the closing fire works at Ocean Front but just missed it. So this has been a GREAT Art Basel, I really enjoyed it and saw some wonderful art and meet some amazing people.   For the better gallery, click here. By Annette Peikert

Photographs – Art Basel Week – Saturday 12/5/09

Art Basel Week on Saturday, December 5, 2009.    This was a very busy day so be prepared for a long list.  First we headed up north to the NADA Art Fair at the The Deauville Beach Resort. for our next stop we went to FemmeArt in the MIMO district, this was an all female art show, with some amazing art.    The next stop was at Multiversal at the American Legion Building, we got there before they opened so we only saw one room but what I saw was amazing, wished we had time to go back to see the entire show.  So now we are ready to head back over to Wynwood to the Fountain Art Fair, we did not make it to this fair last year so I was really excited about see it.  I was not disappointed, this was an awesome fair, from the artist to the layout.    Our next stop was Mine by Not Me art fair,  this was in an old warehouse, so the it had a lot of character. Then we headed over to Zones Art Fair, this is a small but has good art. As we where walking back to the car we came upon Camper Contemporary setup in a little trailer, it was so much fun.  By this time we are starving so we head over to the Gastropod Mobile Gourmet, parked at the Miami Independent Thinkers.  The food was really good.     Calix Gustav Gallery was our next stop and this was an amazing show.  Then over to the Satellite Art + Design Exhibition, had to go back by this one again.    Now we head over to Mid-Town to the Desván which was a pop-up gallery displaying the work of several artists., this had some amazing art, I really enjoy this one.     Now back over to Wynwood to Art Whino, as I mentioned before have some AWESOME artist.   And they had a fire dancer perform, always love fire dancers.  As we where driving around figuring out where to go next can come across an graffiti artist and he was amazing, just look at the pictures.  So we kept driving and came across the Saatchi Artist Guerrra De La Paz and we just missed the live performance of Disco Monkey.  But got the see the art and it was so much fun, most of it was make from clothing.   By now we are starving again so this time we head over to Urbanite Bistro, we ordered off of the late night menu and the prices where reasonable and the staff was very nice, they service as a little slow, but we where in no hurry.  The food was really, really good, I want to go back to see what there regular menu looks like.  After eating we walked over to Max Fish, a pop bar for Art Basel bought down here by the O.H.W.O.W. Gallery.  For the better gallery, click here.    By Annette Peikert

Photographs – Art Basel Week – Friday 12/4/09

Art Basel Week on Friday, December 4, 2009.    We started the day off at CANDO Arts Co-Op Palm Court Exhibit featuring local artist.  Then we headed over to Ink Miami, this has always been one of my favorites and it still is. One of the rooms had Japanese art and it was amazing.   Then we walk over to Verge Art Fair (which was Bridge Art Fair) at the Catalina Hotel, this was a very nice fair. The one thing that really stood out was in the little garden Wild Feasties, they create a Artful Food Experience and they where awesome.  The had gone to the Redlands and picked up fresh fruits and vegetables and the tastings where amazing.   As we where walking back to our car, the street was filled with these big machines, so had to stop and take some action shots.  From there we headed over to PressitOn Gallery in the Design District , they always have such good art work and tonight was no different.  Next we hit Eat your Art Out, this had a great exhibit of emerging artists. Next we walked over to Satallite Art + Design Exhibition at the Miami Art Space.  Now we headed back to South Beach and started at the Metropole Hotel, they had an exhibit from a local artist Dallas, his artwork is awesome.   From there we headed over to the Pool Art Fair at the Carlton Hotel, they had some really cool art.  For our last stop of the night was at the Miami Design Preservation League Special Event at the Art Deco Welcome Center on 10th street.  They just did a big renovation and the looked awesome.  For the better gallery, click here.  By Annette Peikert

Description:

The Food for Life Network (FFLN) AIDS Marathon/Half-Marathon was founded in 2008. The marathon seeks to raise HIV/AIDS awareness in the South Florida community and beyond while simultaneously raising money for Food for Life Network, Inc.

Food for Life Network, Inc. is a 503[c](3) non-profit organization that provides groceries, meals and nutritional education to eliminate malnutrition and starvation in men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS in Miami-Dade County. They are committed to delivering services with compassion and confidentiality, to fostering clients’ dignity and independence, and to enhancing clients’ quality of life.  Since 1987, Food for Life Network, Inc. staff and its volunteers have provided over 1.5 million meals and groceries to people living with HIV/AIDS at no cost to their clients. FFLN is a part of Community AIDS Resource, Inc. (aka “Care Resource”).

Because FFLN, Inc. never charges its clients for their services and because the services we provide are so crucial, we look to socially responsible individuals, businesses, and community leaders like you for help You may not know it, but for as little as $40.00, you can help to feed one homebound client for a week or provide 21 meals for one food bank client. The larger the donation, the greater good we can do. FFLN, Inc. provides other services in addition to its meals on wheels program. For example, FFLN, Inc. clients have access to dieticians and nutritionists. Available services include a BIA testing for muscle mass, fat and water in the tissue, and an individual health eating habit survey. These assessments help FFLN, Inc.’s dieticians and nutritionists construct new diets to improve their clients eating habits. FFLN, Inc. also provides food safety tips which are crucial to HIV/AIDS clients who often have to alter their diet to tolerate their medicine and maximize their strength and overall health.

In addition to making a contribution to this very important cause, you can register as an individual or, if you are a business owner, register your company to participate in the upcoming marathon/half marathon. You can also volunteer your time, talents and/or professional services.

The FFLN AIDS Marathon is hosted annually by ING Miami Marathon. This year the marathon is January 31, 2010. Our goal is to raise $50,000. Fundraising will continue until goal our reached. You can make a direct donation online using a debit or credit card or download the donation form and mail in your donation. Please make checks payable to: FFLN AIDS Marathon 2010. All contributions raised by the marathon go directly to FFLN, Inc., which allocates 85% to client services. All contributions are tax deductible.

THE SALON ART & MUSIC SHOW
SATURDAY DECEMBER 12 (SECOND SAT) @ THE BUNKER 7PM-3AM

The Salon (French: Salon), or rarely Paris Salon beginning in 1725 was the official art exhibition of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France. Between 1748–1890 it was the greatest annual or biannual art event in the western world.
The Salon’s original focus was the display of the work of recent graduates of the École des Beaux-Arts, which was created by Cardinal Mazarin, chief minister of France, in 1648. Exhibition at the Salon de Paris was essential for any artist to achieve success in France for at least the next 200 years. Exhibition in the Salon marked a sign of royal favor.

Press Release – Art Basel Miami Beach | Final Report

abmb

{This is the official press release from Art Basel Miami Beach. We will have a our own review tomorrow. If we do one. Or are we all Baseled out?}

Exceptionally high quality and very solid sales at Art Basel Miami Beach 2009

The eighth edition of Art Basel Miami Beach closed on Sunday, December 6, 2009. More than 250 galleries from North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa exhibited works by over 2,000 artists. With a program of special exhibitions, panel discussions, private collection tours, and events fea¬turing film, performance, and video, the show attracted 42,000 visitors. Visitors included art collectors, museum directors, curators and cultural journalists from all over the United States and the rest of the world. A great number of artists also attended the event, among them Chuck Close, Ingar Dragset, Claire Fontaine, Matthew Day Jackson, Kris Martin, Marilyn Minter, James Rosenquist, Fred Tomaselli, Ai Weiwei, Pae White, and Kehinde Wiley. Over 100 museum and institution groups also visited the show, as did private collectors from the Americas, Europe and many emerging markets of the artworld.
Art Basel Miami Beach proved again that high-quality works remain in strong demand,as collectors rewarded excellent material and booth presentations with steady sales throughout the week. The new layout of Art Basel Miami Beach included larger spaces for many galleries. Many exhibitors also reported excellent sales and valuable new contacts, especially in Latin America. Gallerists offered positive reports, including:

David Zwirner, David Zwirner Gallery, New York
“This was a surprisingly strong show. The show certainly confirmed the trend that started at Art Basel in June. This art market is stabilizing and gaining momentum. During the last twelve months, most business was conducted with established collectors. Here in Miami,it was nice to see some altogether new faces. While most business took place below one million dollars, there were also trades above that figure.”

Tim Neuger, neugerriemschneider, Berlin
“We came with a solo presentation by Jorge Pardo, who wanted us to show a large scale architectural piece, one of his palapas (a tropical pavilion) and it generated a lot of interest, indeed. Believing in idealistic gestures is once again becoming reality.”

Roger Tatley, Director, Alison Jacques Gallery, London
“We’ve had a great Art Basel Miami Beach. The response from museums has been fantastic and sales strong. The decision to exhibit a large group of Hannah Wilke works from the 1970s, along with iconic vintage self portraits by Mapplethorpe, together with other gallery artists, has been extremely rewarding.”

Robert Peter Miller, Robert Miller Gallery, New York
“Because of the artists we represent, I feel that we benefitted from the less freneticand more contemplative pace of the fair. We had many more sales than in any previousArt Basel Miami Beach.”

John Mollett, Director, Jan Krugier Gallery, New York
“This year shows that things are picking up again. The positive energy that had always driven this fair has come back, especially when you compare it to last year. Confidenceis contagious, so if the dealers are optimistic, so are the collectors, and vice versa.”

Andrew da Conceicao, Director, Michael Stevenson Gallery, Cape Town
“It has been a long while since we have met this many new and serious collectors and curators in such a short time span. We have always felt that Americans connect particularly strongly to our program, and Art Basel Miami Beach more than confirmed this for us. Conversations we’ve had in the past few days will continue well beyond the fair, and we hope that Miami will become a new point of reference for our gallery. We are leaving witha big smile on our face.”

Phil Grauer, Partner, Canada Gallery, New York
“We sold our booth quickly and easily to very good collections. Having an Art Positions booth in the central area has brought a sense of community back to the fair.”

This year’s Art Kabinett was of high quality and showed an interesting mix of carefully curated exhibitions in the booths of the galleries. Twenty-eight galleries – more than ever before – presented an Art Kabinett. The projects in this sector of the show featured awide array of artists, ranging from emerging artists such as Jakub Julian Ziotkowski,Haegue Yang and Latifa Echakhch to historical figures like Marcel Duchamp, George Grosz and Jack Tworkov. Further highlights included projects by Olafur Eliasson, Anish Kapoor, Richard Prince and Wim Delvoye. Group shows included exhibitions titled “Fluxus”, “Ninety Years of Bauhaus” and “Aspects of Pop Art”.

The Art Nova sector presented recent works, often fresh from the studio. Pieces by more than 130 artists from around the globe were on display in Art Nova, including 17 solo shows, featuring artists such as Marc Bijl, Valie Export, Rashid Rana, Dan Attoe, Michael Beutler, Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian, Jose Dávila and Marine Hugonnier.

The Art Positions sector – focused on special projects by young artists and galleries – was located for the first time in the center of the Miami Beach Convention Center and proved to be a favorite among visitors, bringing young energy into the halls.Art Positions featured new works by artists such as Renate Lorenz, Falke Pisano,Ulla von Brandenburg, Agathe Snow, Egill Saebjornsson and Reena Spaulings.

Art Projects, newly curated by Patrick Charpenel of Guadalajara, Mexico, featured 13 projects by internationally renowned artists such as Santiago Sierra, Claire Fontaine, William Pope.L, Rirkrit Tiravanija, and Franz West. The projects were installed in the outdoor public spaces of Miami Beach, within close proximity to the Oceanfront areaand the Miami Beach Convention Center. Art Projects attracted many visitors, especially during the performance by Rirkrit Tiravanija in the W South Beach hotel. Another major highlight was the floating house in the Ocean by Jorge Mayet.

The new Oceanfront environment, created by Los Angeles artist Pae White was a highlight of this year’s Art Basel Miami Beach and proved popular with the public.White’s immersive and interactive cityscape provided a new experience with each visit, transforming at night into a shadowy group of buildings. White’s largest project to date, italso hosted a daily program including the Art Basel Conversations, Art Perform, Art Video and Art Film which were well-visited in the mornings and evenings. Art Video, curated by Creative Time, involved screenings of videos by Tom Sachs and The Neistat Brothers, Marc Horowitz, Jill Magid, Kon Trubkovich, followed by discussions with the artists. Art Perform featured an intensified program of longer per¬formances by rising international artists. This program was again curated by Jens Hoffmann, director of the CCA Wattis Institute, San Francisco. It featured performances by Kelly Nipper, Kris Martin, Simon Fujiwara, Claire Fontaine, and Mario Garcia Torres / Loris Gréaud.

This year’s Art Film event offered an exclusive work-in-progress sneak preview of the feature documentary film “Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child”, preceded by a panel with director Tamra Davis, art dealer Jeffrey Deitch, co-producer David Koh, andhip-hop legend Fab 5 Freddy, moderated by Bob Colacello. Directed by Davis, the film featured a long and never-before-seen interview with Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988), shot shortly before his death. Art Film was curated by Zurich film connaisseur This Brunner.

Many leading art-world figures appeared in the Art Basel Conversations. Located this year for the first time at the Oceanfront, the Art Basel Conversations were especially well-attended by the artworld and the broader public in their new location by the beach. The premiere presented an artist talk with Ai Weiwei, followed by “Museum Directors: Change in Generation”, “Collector Focus: Latin America” and “The Future of the Museum: The Portable Museum”. (Videos of the Art Basel Conversations can be downloaded soon at www.artbaselmiamibeach.com/conversations.)

Art Salon, located this year for the first time in the central area of the Miami Beach Convention Center, evolved well in its new location. Participants included artworld figures such as Pae White, Jens Hoffmann, Fred Tomaselli, Mark Rosenthal, James Rosenquist, Klaus Biesenbach and Josh Baer.

Museum Groups
More than a hundred international museum and collectors groups came from all over the world to attend Art Basel Miami Beach. The delegations included boards of trustees from Museo de Arte de Lima; Brooklyn Museum; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; MOCA Los Angeles; Guggenheim Museum New York; Museu de Arte Moderna Sao Paulo; Dallas Museum of Art; MCA Denver; Birmingham Museum of Art; Detroit Institute of Arts; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington; Art Institute of Chicago; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Palais de Tokyo, Paris; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; New Museum, New York; and many more.

Museum exhibitions and collections
Following long tradition, the Miami museums organized significant exhibitions. A particular highlight was the opening of the newly built De La Cruz Collection Contemporary Art Space in Miami’s Design District, which attracted a large number of visitors every day during Art Basel Miami Beach. Other shows included exhibitions presenting Guillermo Kuitca at the Miami Art Museum, “Art from the Jumex Collection” at the Bass Museum, William Kentridge at the Norton Museum, George Segal at the Margulies Collection, “The Realms of Reality” at MOCA Miami, and Raymond Pettibon and Sylvie Fleury at World Class Boxing. Once again, Miami’s leading private collections – among them the Margulies Collection, the Rubell Family Collection, CIFO, the De La Cruz Collection, the Mora Collection, the Scholl Collection, and the Dacra Collection – opened their homes and warehouses to guests of the international art show. The daily visits to artist studios in the Greater Miami area were also very popular with visitors.

No matter what sounds you profess to be your music of choice, chances are, that at some point over the last five years, you will have got your rocks off to Matt Edwards.
Radio Slave. Perhaps Matt’s most instantly recognisable nom de guerre, thanks in part to his inspirational melding of Kylie’s Can’t Get You Out Of My Head to New Order’s Blue Monday, this is Matt’s DJ moniker and the guise under which he completes his incendiary remixes and re-edits.
However, before such sonic schizophrenia gets you calling for the men in white coats, just feel the quality and consider Matt’s legacy. Fired by the first wave of acid house, Matt gained his musical spurs by partying to dance music that was just that: music you danced to, irrespective of tribal factions.
This was the raison d’être he acknowledged when he took to the decks, first at London’s legendary Milk Bar in 1992, then onto the, then, recently opened Ministry Of Sound and then to parties across the country, most notably in Wales – where he was a regular at free parties – and in Brighton, his home since 1998.
His love of re-edits, dance music’s oft-forgotten backbone, led Matt into the studio himself. His own re-edits and remixes, such as the aforementioned epoch-defining re-imagining for Ms Minogue, soon gave way to his own productions and since the floodgates opened there’s been no stopping the man known as, erm, Matthew E, Quiet Village, Sea Devils, Rekid and Radio Slave.
He’s released records for Skint, Soul Jazz, Classic, Whatever We Want, and he’s worked with fellow travellers, Belgium’s The Glimmers. If Matt comes up with another two projects he’ll have enough alter egos for every day of the week.
Psychologists would probably have a field day with him; mercifully, we don’t have to worry about any crisis of identity, we just get to keep on dancing.

Javier Ruibal to perform at Kimbaracumbara 12/4/09

fundarte_javierruibal1
Have you ever felt your senses begin to cloud because of a poem or a melody? Have you ever felt the sensation of listening to a voice that takes over you? It is the result of a lifetime of hard work, years and years of struggle, of moving verses, a gift for the eyes and the ears, a gentle caress for the soul. Javier Ruibal has the power to engulf each new guilty party….. It is a crime to not know his music, to not have entered into his world of fusion, into his labyrinth of beautiful words…. With every strum of his guitar, with every lyric, he is able to take us into a world full of color, of “tobacco and Spanish wine,” a world with stories of prohibited love, a world of landscapes which seem to be created by the images of its own verses, a world of insatiable longings, of lost souls… His voice invites us to journey into his dreams, his rhythm fills the music lover with pleasure, and even the most stubborn of listeners are captured by what they hear and feel. He finds himself surrounded by the most happening of grooves, the most happening musicians, and in the top international stages, he is considered the most organic of artists in this world full of jealousy and betrayal. Journey into his music and allow his magic to engulf you. You will become one of many, but he will make you feel like you are the only one. There is room for you here, and you can expect to stay forever.

Reviews
“Helene Weiss has had an open dialogue with the viewer. Pairing both the delicacy and fragility of life against its strengths and triumphs, she has arrived at a balance she likens to the teachings of Thai Chi”

“The overall harmony that is present in Helene Weiss’ paintings draw upon years of experience and process. Her paintings have reached a level of understanding and sophistication that communicates an intuitive link between strength and sublime beauty”

“Helene’s work captures the tangled human experience in all its despair and beauty, transporting viewers on an unconscious trip thru life’s truth’s and circumstances, at each point in between, the work invites memories & personal choice, ultimately leading viewers back to conscious acknowledgement of the work, life and who he or she is at that moment”

About the artist
Helene M. Weiss is a prolific painter gifted with the range, instinct, style and technique afforded only arts great masters. Ms. Weiss, now 70 has amassed a portfolio of art sixty-two years in the making, an extensive collection of original paintings born of feeling, emotion and the complexities of everyday life. Original works include figurative, abstract, still life and pencil drawings, each a masterpiece from conception defined by color, form and a fluidity that is not literal, not clever, rather relatable and profound.

Born 1939 in Brooklyn, New York, Helene Weiss has literally been painting all her life. In grade school, her art instructor at the Center Academy in Brooklyn and his then colleague, aspiring artist Mark Rothko took notice of Helene’s natural gift, urging the Weiss family to nurture and encourage the blossoming abilities of a then seven-year-old Helene.
Attending Boston University’s School of Fine & Applied Arts Helene received a scholarship to study at the Brooklyn Museum of Art where her work received top honors in the Museum’s “Fence Art Show.” Helene was later awarded a fellowship to the world renowned, Provincetown Workshop, a host to premiere artists from around the world and the place she would meet personal mentors, famed artists Robert Motherwell and Helen Frankenthaler.

Helene Weiss|ART has been exhibited in galleries across the country and throughout her native New York, including The National Arts Gallery, Lincoln Center, Brooklyn Museum of Art and The Cloisters, Metropolitan Museum of Art. Today, Ms. Weiss enjoys an international following thanks in large part to Art Basel and the print media, most notably, the acclaimed book published in 2007, “Miami Contemporary Artists”, which named Helene as one of the “key artists who have played a role in bringing the cultural evolution of Miami to fruition”

About: Educate Tomorrow, Corp. is an international, nonprofit, certified 501(c)(3) organization. All over the world, poverty denies children, as well as adults, the promises of a better tomorrow. Forgotten by society and social welfare programs, children born into poverty are trapped in a cruel and often violent cycle that frequently continues for generations. Lacking the inspiration, confidence, knowledge, and means to change, entire families are lost to the cycle of hopelessness.

Educate Tomorrow believes that the best way to end the cycle of poverty is through education. Our mission is to make education an attainable goal for the most disadvantaged in our world, so that all may be afforded the possibilities that can be achieved through learning. We strive to reach out to these individuals and provide them inspiration, guidance, and support and lead them on the path of life-long learning.

Educate Tomorrow’s primary mission in the US is to provide one-on-one educational mentors to foster care children that are turning 18 and “aging out” of the system. Since its founding in 2003, Educate Tomorrow has successfully implemented its mentoring programs, education programs and life skills camps across the nation. Additionally, it has reached internationally by continuing to support the work of it’s founders who established one of the first local language primary schools, adult literacy programs and boarding schools in the remote and impoverished village of Kabey Fo in Niger, West Africa.
