Art Miami, LLC. is pleased to announce its confirmed exhibitor list in association with the launch of Art Wynwood, taking place President’s Day Weekend, Feb. 16 – 20, 2012. Held in the spacious 100,000-square-foot Art Miami Pavilion, which attracted more than 55,000 attendees during the 2011 edition of Art Miami, the inaugural five-day International Contemporary Art Fair will showcase a compelling array of cutting-edge, contemporary and modern artwork by both emerging and established artists from more than 50 galleries, including “the flying murals of Wynwood” commissioned by the district’s own Tony Goldman.

Art Wynwood will feature paintings, photography, sculpture, art video and new media, conceptual art and urban street art by 500 artists from 13 countries: Argentina, Austria, Canada, China, France, Germany, Ireland, Mexico, Spain, the Netherlands, Venezuela, United Kingdom and the United States. With representation from 100 cities from around the world, including 50 across the U.S., Art Wynwood will further distinguish the Wynwood Arts District as a leading cultural destination for acquiring contemporary art. A VIP Private Preview will be held in celebration of the opening on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012.

“This is a very exciting time and opportunity for the Wynwood Arts District, as well as Miami, our organization, exhibitors and the international community of art collectors who vacation or call South Florida home during President’s Day Weekend,” said Nick Korniloff, Director and Partner of Art Wynwood. “Art Wynwood will further ignite the Wynwood Arts District urban revitalization by providing a high quality, standalone International Contemporary Art Fair that will garner international recognition for the district and deliver a positive economic impact for many years to come.”

Capturing the essence of what the Wynwood Arts District and the Miami Art scene have to offer is paramount. Notably, Tony Goldman, who has been a driving force in the evolution of the arts and warehouse district of Wynwood, will exhibit what he describes as “the flying murals of Wynwood” in the fair’s VIP Lounge. Under his guidance, six 8’ x 24’ murals by international artists, including a Retna work from the Janet and Tony Goldman Collection, an existing piece from How & Nosm, as well as new murals from DAZE, Aiko and Futura, will be installed. Goldman will also be an integral part of Art Wynwood’s soon-to-be-announced host committee, which will be comprised of industry leaders in the art, design and media worlds from Miami and beyond. He states, “We applaud the organizers of Art Wynwood for their decision to launch a new art fair in Miami next month. This is a wonderful example of how Miami – and specifically Wynwood – has evolved into a year round arts destination.  I think I speak on behalf of the entire Wynwood community in welcoming and supporting Art Wynwood.”

Graffiti Gone Global (GGG), powered by SUSHISAMBA, announces its fifth consecutive exhibition of urban contemporary art and design during Art Basel Miami Beach. At the center of GGG 2011 are three acclaimed artists whose respective focuses in architecture, design and street art speak to the brand’s evolving nature. The work of Marc Fornes, Volkan Alkanoglu, and Billi Kid of Public Works Department will transform the ‘Rotunda,’ a 10,000-square-foot cornerstone in Midtown Miami (3252 NW 1st Avenue, Suite 101). A trailblazer in the field of sustainable architecture and design, Alkanoglu uses progressive techniques in the fabrication of his work. An accredited professional of LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), he selects low-impact materials for his work, producing designs that enhance their immediate environment.

This year’s GGG, will provide a platform for Alkanoglu and Fornes to again work alongside each other, following their participation in “Sukkah City 2010” where each artist impressed GGG’s Concept Developer, Shimon Bokovza, with their winning designs – P.YGROS.C/passive hygroscopic curls by Fornes and “Star Cocoon” by Alkanoglu. Alkanoglu’s “Star Cocoon” is now part of the permanent collection at Yeshiva University Museum in New York City. Additionally, in the past year, Fornes and Alkanoglu earned first prize for a collaboration piece for a Public Arts Project in Redondo Beach, California as well as first prize for their installation in Creve Couer, Missouri.

“GGG goes beyond celebrating urban contemporary design. It promotes a cultural agenda through art,” says Alkanoglu. “As a trained architect I am part of a practice that encompasses both the build environment and methods of artistic representation.”
For this year’s exhibition, Alkanoglu designed “Public Figure” – a work that speaks to his mastery of design and interest in sustainable art. His project is a geometric bench-like structure composed of opaque, high-density polyethylene. “Public Figure” is multifunctional in use, measuring 10 feet long and reaching 18 inches from the floor. Alkanoglu describes “Public Figure” as an “urban device” that symbolizes social interaction through its two, infinite loops that are in “constant dialogue.” The design is physically accessible to viewers, encouraging them to interact both with the design and each other.

Reinforcing the brand’s steadfast dedication to street inspiration is returning artist and curator, Billi Kid, the creator behind SUSHISAMBA’s permanent collection: the “Eames Inspiration.” This year, Kid will present his most recent project, “The Art of Basketball”, by Public Works Department featuring sections of the NBA All Star Game basketball court that have been re-imagined as design pieces for interior spaces.

The innovative assemblage of home-furnishings-meets-street reveals the dynamic nature of urban design as it can take life in a myriad of mediums that extend beyond the purview of the street. ART ASIA Miami 2010 focused on special projects that challenged the pre-existing notions of Asian contemporary art today. ART ASIA Miami featured established and emerging artists through six special projects with works from China, India, Iran, Korea and Japan. The fair welcomed more than 30,000 visitors—top collectors, curators, critics, artists, and art enthusiasts.

In 2011, ART ASIA Miami will further develop the presence of Near Eastern, Middle Eastern, and South East Asian galleries and artists—paying special attention to broadening the understanding of Asian contemporary art. Graffiti Gone Global (GGG), powered by Sushisamba, announces its fifth consecutive exhibition of urban contemporary art and design, running parallel to Art Basel Miami Beach. At the center of GGG 2011 is famed French architect, Marc Fornes, who will unveil ‘Labrys Frisae’ – a conceptual, non-linear structure reminiscent of three-dimensional graffiti. ‘Labrys Frisae’ will be the largest installation of Fornes’ oeuvre to date. In the months leading up to show, he will face the intricate task of bringing his work to life, assembling – by hand – more than 80 nodes, 12,000 unique parts and 100,000 connectors. Once completed, ‘Labrys Frisae’ will span 30 feet and rise 16 feet above the floor, utterly transforming Midtown’s glass Rotunda space.

“Fornes’ technique and overall vision for ‘Labrys Frisae’ embody the philosophy of GGG,” said Shimon Bokovza, founder and managing partner of SUSHISAMBA and GGG visionary. “His approach to architecture speaks to the ever-evolving nature of GGG and is reflective of our appreciation for, and cultivation of, progressive forms of art that question conventional standards.”

Fornes will challenge his audience to understand his geometric morphology of surfaces and networks, reminding them that first appearances are not always what they seem. The design of “Labrys Frisae” will allow visitors to obtain a greater understanding of the installation through three entryways leading them ‘inside’ the structure. Moreover, the exhibiton space will permit viewers to experience Fornes’ work from multiple perspectives – from both the ground floor and the mezzanine level – while the visitor’s relationship with Fornes’ 3-D graffiti will shift according to their position in the Rotunda. Beyond the structure itself, Fornes will heighten and seduce the visitor’s visual and auditory senses with lighting and music, leaving them mesmerized by his ability to seamlessly transform mathematical cryptogram into a large-scale, art installation.

Since it’s inception in 2007, GGG has showcased an international ensemble of artists whose work transcends the boundaries of the street and gallery. In accord with the mission of GGG, Fornes has challenged traditional notions of urban contemporary design. From his Brooklyn-based studio, he identifies his work as subversive and embraces the grassroots and hands-on mantra of so many street artists who choose to express art in their immediate environment.

Fornes is inspired by his formal education at the School of Architecture in the United Kingdom and his practical experience as the project architect for Zaha Hadid Architects. In 2005, Fornes started his own label THEVERYMANYTM. Under this guise, he manufactures blueprints for his work with computational protocol – algorithms – which he then uses in the production of his designs. His trademark installations have been recognized internationally, by Museum of Modern Art in New York where he was invited to lecture, the Guggenheim in New York to show, and the Centre Pompidou in Parisand FRAC Centre in Orleans, to be part of France’s permanent collections.

GGG‘s mission is to celebrate and showcase the evolving art and culture of the street. Taking place annually during Art Basel Miami Beach, GGG is the only exhibit of its kind, showcasing the work of today’s most talented international graffiti and street artists. The project strives to break the barriers between the street and the gallery to bring the irrefutable influence of these creative energies on all aspects of design to light.
