Miami, FL – The second South Florida edition of the Festival of Colors (festivalofcolorsfl.com) is coming to central Miami at Peacock Park in Coconut Grove on Saturday, April 13.

After an inaugural colorful 2023 event attended by hundreds in Ft, Lauderdale, this marks the second local edition of the Festival of Colors USA. It’s been beloved by conscious partiers throughout the western US for nearly two decades (festivalofcolorsusa.com), and billed as “the world’s happiest transformational festival.”

Inspired by the Indian festival of Holi, the Festival of Colors will take place on Saturday, April 13 from 11 am to 4 pm, at Peacock Park, 2820 MacFarlane Rd., Coconut Grove, Miami, 33133.

The day promises to be a vibrant celebration of love, unity, and joy, and sober, uplifting fun, with plenty of cruelty-free cuisine, arts and crafts, mantra music, HOURLY COLOR THROWS — and free entry for kids under 12!

The Festival of Colors, also known as Holi, is a Hindu festival that has been celebrated in India and other parts of the world for centuries. It’s a time when people come together to celebrate the arrival of spring and the victory of good over evil. During the festival, participants throw colorful powder at each other, dance to live music, and enjoy delicious food.

This year’s Festival of Colors in Florida promises to be an unforgettable experience for all attendees. In addition to the colorful powder throwing and live music, there will also be yoga, meditation, and dance workshops throughout the day. There will also be plenty of food vendors, serving up delicious vegetarian and vegan options.

“We’re thrilled to bring the Festival of Colors to South Florida for the first time this year,” said festival organizer, Vasanti Dasi. “We want to create a space where people can come together, have fun, and celebrate the beauty of diversity and unity. This festival is a celebration of life, love, and happiness.”

Tickets for the Festival of Colors are available for purchase on the festival’s website, festivalofcolorsfl.com. Early bird tickets are on sale now, so make sure to grab yours before they sell out. Again, kids under 12 enter free, and there’s a special discount for students and veterans.

Use promo code BHAKTI at checkout to get presale entry for just $5 (with a bag of three colors) or $10 (with a bag of three colors and a vegetarian or vegan meal). Students and veterans can use the code to get presale entry with a bag of colors for $5.

Press passes are available by contacting press officer Radha dasi at radha@halftimeyoga.com, or calling 786-361-6417.

American Heritage Schools [ahschool.com], the top-ranked PK3 through 12 college preparatory school in Florida, is proud to announce its annual “K-9 Cause: An Evening of Art” auction benefiting the Broward Sheriff’s Foundation’s Retired Canine Relief Fund, on Saturday, April 20.

Everyone loves dogs; however, police dogs, or K-9s, are a special breed. Instead of enjoying the pampered pet lifestyle, K-9s dedicate their entire lives to working daily to protect and serve citizens in our community along with their fearless handlers. They are considered law enforcement officers, whose duties include constant training, apprehending suspects, and searching for explosives, drugs, and missing persons.

When the K-9s retire, their law enforcement handlers graciously adopt them and continue to care for them, as these K-9s have become their friends for life. Recognizing that the medical and healthcare for these K-9s can get quite costly, the Broward Sheriff’s Foundation has established the Retired K-9 Healthcare Fund. This Fund pays for up to 50% of the wellness care costs for all retired K-9s from any local law enforcement agency in Broward County.

Inspired by a little boy’s passion for animals and art, American Heritage Schools is raising money to “fund this fund” by selling artistic renditions of these fine K-9s. Jackson Laurie, a sophomore at American Heritage Schools, and his parents Dr. Douglas Laurie and Nikki Laurie-Van Allen have partnered with the National Art Honor Society and the award-winning Fine Arts faculty at American Heritage to create artwork of these very K-9 being honored.

American Heritage Schools, Broward Campus, will be hosting a Silent Auction for these original works of art, as well as a limited supply of prints for sale at our K-9 Cause event. 100% of all funds raised from this event will benefit the Broward Sheriff Foundation’s Retired K-9 Relief Fund.

If You Own a Dog in Miami, This Free Online Dog Training Workshop is For You 11/10/22

If You Own a Dog in Miami, This Free Online Dog Training Workshop is For You
Thursday, 11/10/2022-11/14/2022, 10:00 am-05:00 pm
Website
Cost: Free

If you are in the Miami area, we would like to invite you to a first-of-its-kind online workshop that helps you to housebreak your dog, stop bad behaviors, and train them to become as obedient as service dogs, using the same secret methods used by service dog trainers. Check out this free dog training workshop

Training a dog is certainly the hardest part of owning a dog. It can be very frustrating having a dog that is not housebroken, or barks excessively, or keeps pulling on the leash during your walks, or doesn’t respond whenever it’s called, or jumps up on people, etc.

You’ll be fed up, because it’s pretty exhausting to keep trying to make them listen. You’ll wonder how professional dog trainers help dogs behave exactly the way they (the trainers) want them to.

But hiring a trainer can be quite expensive, and to be honest, you don’t really need to.

I’ll explain how in a minute. First, let me talk about WHY your dog seems to be so hard to train…

The reason you are having so much difficulty training your dog is that you’ve been doing dog training the outdated way.

It’s not your fault though. The fault really lies with all the bad dog training information that’s out there on the Internet and elsewhere.

Most people start training their dogs using verbal cues or commands like SIT, STAY, etc. Because that’s what they have been taught to do by numerous books on dog training and by all the videos they’ve seen on the Internet.

Here’s the problem – that’s exactly how NOT to train a dog!

Why?

Because the science of animal behavior says that starting your training using verbal cues sets your dog up for failure.

Dogs that are trained only using verbal cues never get trained properly. Or at least, the training doesn’t last long.

So what’s the best way to train a dog?

The science is very clear on this – dogs are best trained by using body language. Now, this doesn’t mean that you should never use verbal cues. What it means is that you should always START your dog’s training using body language. Later on, you can bring in a verbal cue to reinforce your dog’s training.

That’s it? Yeah, that’s it :-)

So how do you train your dog using body language?

We put together this limited time FREE training in Miami, fantastic free workshop from the K9 Training Institute that helps you learn how to do just that.

The workshop is designed to help “normal” dogs like yours have the same level of calmness, obedience and impulse control as service dogs.

It’s being conducted by Dr. Alexa Diaz (one of the top service dog trainers in the U.S.) and Eric Presnall (host of the hit Animal Planet TV show “Who Let the Dogs Out”).

Frankly, the techniques described in the workshop are fairly groundbreaking – I haven’t seen anyone else talk of these techniques.

This is because it’s the first time ever (at least that I know of) that anyone has revealed the secret techniques used by the service dog training industry to train service dogs.

In the free workshop, you’ll discover:

How to train your dog using body language, rather than verbal cues
The 3 key techniques that service dog trainers use to train dogs, and how you can use them too
The most important step that “normal” dog owners have been missing (this is very important to get your dog’s attention, and it works 100% of the time)
How to stop bad behaviors like excessive barking, pulling on the leash, jumping, etc.
Why a lot of dog owners are unable to establish the amazing bond that service dog trainers have with their dogs
etc.

The tips shared in this free workshop work on ALL dog breeds – from small breeds like Pomeranians and Chihuahuas to large breeds like English Mastiffs and Great Danes.

Also, puppies as young as 6 weeks old, and previously untrained adult dogs as old as 13 years, have been successfully trained using these techniques.

It’s not a live workshop – rather, it’s a pre-recorded workshop, which means that you can watch it at your convenience. This is considered one of the best online dog trainings, with countless 5-star reviews.

However, while the workshop is free, I am not sure whether it’s going to be online for too long, so please check it out as soon as you can.

Celebrating Fort Lauderdale’s love for their furry companions with a day of four-legged fun, the event is once again hosted by the dynamic mom and pup duo behind the award-winning Instagram @TourwithTeddy and blog “Living A Fairytail.”

Coinciding with National Love Your Pet Day, flower crowns and fur will fill the air during this ulti-mutt Sunday Funday experience. New this year is the VIP bark brunch picnic featuring indie-acoustic tunes courtesy of JJ and the Florida Oranges band.

Welcoming locals and visitors of all ages, attendees can capture Instagramable moments through a variety of activities, including the Pawz-itive Dog Training Agility Course and Road-Tripping Rover VW Bus photobooth, sponsored by Good Times Roll. Vendors include Pet Wants Fort Lauderdale, Petit Pups Pawtique and More, and Ruff House, to name a few.

Bayfront Holiday Village — A Bustling Wonderland Filled with Brilliant Lights, Shopping, Food and Entertainment Awaits in Downtown Miami

Bayfront Holiday Village Brings Daily Christmas Tree Lights Shows, Waterfront Roller-Skating, Local Vendors, Nightly Music and Top Food and Drink Offerings

Downtown Miami’s iconic Bayfront Park will transform into the magical Bayfront Holiday Village offering free, family-friendly programming all season long. Guests of all ages will enjoy daily 50 ft. Christmas tree LED light shows, waterfront roller-skating by Bayskate, over 50 local vendors, festive music and al fresco food and drinks.

Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, locals and tourists alike will come for the weather, but stay for great shop-ping, entertainment and Miami’s version of a tropical winter wonderland.

“We know that New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles have pop-up holiday villages. We wanted to create a village where people would gather their loved ones and join in on some holiday cheer. Of course, we have something that the rest of the nation envies – our weather,” said Tony Albelo, event creator and CEO at SWARM.

Organizers want people to envision a quaint, picture-perfect, holiday outdoor venue filled with twinkling lights against Miami’s downtown skyline and waterfront Biscayne Bay. The picture-perfect, outdoor, holiday venue will be filled with twinkling lights and larger-than-life displays worthy of capturing the moment and posting it on Insta-gram.

“The only thing missing out of this Hallmark-perfect scene will be the frigid snow, but that’s why we invite our neighbors from the north to come here to enjoy Bayfront Holiday Village, Miami-style,” added Albelo.

Every night, a fully decorated, 50-foot state-of-the-art, animated Christmas Tree will feature hourly LED light shows sequenced to three different festive musical shows produced by Grammy-winning producer A.T. Molina.

New York has The Rink at Rockefeller Center, but Miami’s answer to cold-weather ice skating is Bay Skate, where adults and children can boogie to the beat of freestyle, tropical, contemporary pop and more. In the Northeast, peo-ple are ice skating and sipping hot cocoa wearing parkas. In Miami, we roller skate and sip mojitos in shorts. The Shops will offer a collection of 60 artisans in a jovial setting, each offering unique gift ideas to check off the “nice” list! Foodies will delight their senses at Bayfront Bites, where they’ll find seasonal beverages, sweet treats and food ga-lore!

The adventurous will participate in the Gnauhty Gnome Scavenger Hunt as they navigate Bayfront Park using guidebooks with clues to solve this year’s puzzle. Even fur babies will have a place of their own to hang out with free treats at the Santa Paws Dog Park, and every Sunday they’ll have Puppy Brunch!

10 Days of Connection is a community-led initiative to promote kindness and inclusion in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. From May 1-10, participants are invited to attend connection experiences hosted by more than 100 local organizations, and are challenged to step outside of their comfort zone to forge new connections across lines of difference.

In recent years, people have become increasingly divided across lines of difference. Incidents of hate have increased, and tolerance for differing ideas has decreased. For ten days each year, we challenge the entire community to break down silos and engage in acts of connection, to build empathy, to increase understanding, and to refocus on our shared humanity.

Join in! Our community will be stronger when we all commit to focusing on what unites us instead of what divides us. A full calendar of events is available at http://bit.ly/ConnectionEvents2019.

Grillin N’ Chillin kicks off BBQ season with a full-blown countryside event that’s free for the entire family. Whether you’re craving backyard barbecue spare ribs, a southern brisket or a mouthwatering pulled pork sandwich, Grillin N Chillin has compiled 40-50 BBQ vendors from around town offering everything from Memphis style barbecue to Brazilian churrasco. Celebrating its 4th anniversary, this year’s festival will take place at the Wynwood Marketplace, more commonly known for hosting Wynwood Art Walk’s block party.

At Grillin’s Kitchen Lab, South Florida’s premier pit masters will take center stage to smoke the competition out at this year’s BBQ Cook Off. In between cooking demos, their saucy host will perform a ROAST comedy show. In addition, they will pit two local backyard chefs and their best burger recipe at Miami’s Best Backyard Burger competition. Those interested in participating should register their recipe at WynwoodBBQFest.com. For the first time ever, Grillin N’ Chillin will have a Veggie Corner, where Miami’s top, vegetarian and vegan eateries will showcase their menu. While kids enjoy the Family Fun Zone, adults can relax at The Pit, a pop-up BBQ-infused sports bar that will have bars and live music, or they can “Get Lost in the Sauce” at the huge sauce bar. Be sure to pick up some SWARM Bar Bucks online to save money on mixed drinks (($25 for $45 value at the bar). Also, bring your furry pups, because the Hot Dogz playground will have plenty of treats for them to enjoy. In addition, the Animal Adoption Truck will be on site for those looking to take home a pet. To round off a day of good BBQ, Grillin N’ Chillin has compiled a number of popular dessert vendors who will be ready to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Perhaps the coolest feature at this year’s Grillin N’ Chillin is both the humanitarian and ecological stand that it’s going to take. SWARM, the creators of this festival, will set up a Miami Rescue Mission tent, so that people can sponsor a meal for a hungry person. In addition, it will be “going green” by partnering with Debris Free Oceans to become a zero-waste event. “To date, no other event in South Florida has taken this into consideration, so we’re excited to have proper sorting, composting and recycling stations in addition to other green efforts,” says Tony Albelo, CEO at SWARM.

Proceeds benefit Women In Distress of Broward County, Inc., the only nationally accredited, state-certified, full service domestic violence center serving Broward County.

More than 1,000 community members (and their furry friends) will take to the pavement to raise awareness about domestic violence and help Women In Distress reach its goal of raising $150,000, which can provide 1,500 nights of safe shelter for adults and children affected by domestic violence. Registration begins at 7:30 am. The event will kick off with a warm up, followed by timed race for runners and a more leisurely stroll for walkers, strollers and dogs at 9:00am.

Come out and walk or run in honor of those affected by domestic violence. Domestic violence survivors will be cheering on walkers and runners along the route and also walking alongside supporters celebrating the brave steps they’ve taken toward a new violence-free life. February is also Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month and information on domestic violence will be available for all participants.

A registration fee is required in order to participate. Pre-registered adults are $25, students are $20, youth participants, ages 6-12 are $15 and dogs can walk for $10 (must be registered with a participating adult or teen). Kids ages 5 and under are free. SAFEWALK participants will enjoy a complimentary breakfast and T-shirt. Kids can enjoy a variety of fun activities and everyone can visit local vendors within our vendor village. Thank you to our sponsors, including Host Sponsor Nova Southeastern University, JM Family Enterprises, Inc., SE Toyota, Sun Sentinel, Thomas Family Foundation, and Ultimate Software for helping keep families safe.

Register now at http://widbc.convio.net/SafeWalk2016 and your registration fee can make a difference by providing the cost of answering two calls for help on our 24-Hour Crisis Hotline.

PetsTrust Animal Shelter Sit-In 10/5/12-10/7/12

Miami-Dade Animal Shelter

Miami, FL 33166

The goal of Pets’ Trust Miami is to stop the killing of 20,000 adoptable dogs and cats in Miami-Dade County each year.

Pets-Trust-Miami-Evite-for-publicOn October 5th pm Michael Rosenberg will be “checking in” to Miami Dade County Animal Services where he will live in a cage among homeless dogs and cats to spread a message of awareness that we need to vote for YES for #240 on Nov. 6th.

Visit MDAS on Oct. 5th-7th to see Micheal and adopt a dog or a cat for a discounted $25 adoption fee.

Pets’ Trust Miami Founder, Michael Rosenberg, is a man of his word and truly a dog’s (and cat’s) best friend. He is spending this weekend in a cage at Miami-Dade Animal Services on behalf of the Pets’ Trust ballot measure #240 to address the plight of overpopulated, abandoned and homeless pets. Rosenberg will be surrendered (like thousands of unwanted pets each year) and housed in a concrete, chain-link cage for two nights, while Animal Services steps up adoption efforts with a weekend goal of finding “forever homes” for the nearly 600 abandoned pets currently in the shelter. Animal Services is reducing adoption fees to $25 on October 6 & 7.

Pets’ Trust Miami is an unprecedented effort to help save the lives of thousands of animals and assist our community’s pet owners. Miami-Dade Animal Services takes in up to 37,000 dogs and cats every year and kills more than 20,000 adoptable pets annually due to overpopulation and abandonment. It is estimated that more than 400,000 stray cats roam the streets of Miami-Dade County. This initiative aims to perform up to 100,000 spay and neuter surgeries per year, as well as to provide educational programs and low-cost veterinary care for qualified residents. For more information on the Pets’ Trust, please visit www.PetsTrustMiami.com or call Michael Rosenberg at 305-439-3571.

As you know, Paws 4 You Rescue’s Mission is to save dogs from the euthanasia list at Miami-Dade Animal Services. Our volunteers are there several times a week saving the unwanted.

Paws 4 You Rescue sees first hand what is happening at our County Shelter. By signing the Pets’ Trust petition and supporting the efforts, you, along with local animal advocates, hope to improve the lives of these animals.

The Pets’ Trust, modeled after the Children’s Trust, will create a consistent source of funds to operate and staff a new shelter due to open next year; lower the cost of spay and neuter services; and fund public awareness efforts about vaccinating and microchipping pets.

Paws 4 You Rescue believes that given the chance to vote, the citizens of Miami-Dade County will support a Pets’ Trust. Seeking a spot on the ballot is an initiative that both Houses of the Legislature need to support.

Saturday’s BARKupy Miami is to show our political leaders that Miami’s citizens should have the right to vote to improve the lives of our companion animals.

Wear a red shirt and bring your dog this Saturday to stand with Paws 4 You Rescue and the current dogs we have for adoption that were saved from death at our County Shelter. Together we can ask for the right to vote.

Dog Gone Great Day at Keys Woofstock!

Yes, you read that right. WooFstock. As in, woof woof, what your doggy says to you when he needs to go out, or sees someone at your door, or hears the front gate close, or you sneeze, or….

Anyway, this isn’t about my dog’s frequent and annoying habit of barking at the air, it’s about a fantastic, free, dog-friendly event sponsored by MarrVelous Pet Rescues & Adoptions. The location? Well, this is Florida after all, and all fabulous events here take place ocean-front, and Woofstock was no exception. Beautiful Founder’s Park in Islamorada, FL played host to the thousands of furry friends and the people who obsess over them.

Every dog you could imagine was represented at Woofstock: big Great Danes, tiny Chihuahuas, new hybrid types like my unique German Sheagle, marvelous mixes of all kinds, and even a fluffy white guy who was tie-dyed pink, blue, and green in true hippie form. Speaking of tie dye, there certainly was plenty of it. From the vendors to the staff, bright colorful fabric abounded, keeping the theme of the day consistent.

The adjacent dog park served to shed some energy off the excited pups, but all animals were leashed and well-behaved as they explored the many booths. Treats and lunch for dogs and humans alike were for sale at reasonable prices. Local restaurants offering fresh seafood added spice to the usual street food type fare. But by far, the most popular and exciting areas were the doggy dock diving and lure racing. For a meager $10, your little angel could race around the track chasing a stuffed animal or fly through the air and into the pool after his favorite toy. It’s a competition so make a note of your time and distance! Ours was 10.4 seconds, heck yeah!

Plenty of scents for doggy noses and sweet tunes for human eardrums polished up the day perfectly. A local band of teenagers brought ska style funk and fun loving fans who danced hard right up front. Juxtaposed thereafter was the middle aged group of rockers whose drummer crooned 70s ballads and 90s rock anthems to which everyone sings along.

Keys Woofstock was a well-organized event that was fun for the entire family. Next year we’ll be back, and I’ll be sure to get the word out in advance so everyone can enjoy it. If you would like to support Keys Woofstock, please follow the below link to make a donation to the Marr-Velous Pet Rescues & Adoptions of the Florida Keys.

The Dog Beach of Hollywood, FL

The Dog Beach of Hollywood, FL
Between Pershing and Custer Streets on the Ocean
www.dboh.org

The emotions I felt when I took my little angel to the dog beach in Hollywood, FL for the first time were overwhelming. Boundi and the other dogs ran, swam, played fetch, chased each other, and generally had the time of their lives, all free from leash restraint.

The friendly dogs and people who shared the experience with us on this fall day smiled and laughed as we talked about our pets and threw tennis balls deep into the Atlantic. Everyone cleaned up after their pet(s) and our dog even cleaned up after some ungrateful beach goer, who had littered a plastic bag in the ocean. Ever the loyal retriever, Boundi brought the bag to our feet and we properly disposed of it.

I like very much that they have a public official or park officer of some kind there on the sand to ensure everyone’s safety, though he wasn’t utilized during my visit.

For Miami Dade dog lovers who have visited the “dog beach” on Key Biscayne: DON’T! Don’t ever go there again. I know we won’t. Even though it’s a bit of a drive to the Hollywood beach, the experience is more than worth it and the beach doesn’t even compare to the dirty area on the causeway where they allow dogs in Miami.
Bottom Line: This gorgeous beach is amazing just for human recreation, and allowing furry friends to share in the fun takes it to another fantastic level!
