Archetypal Afrobeat comes to Miami with Fela’s legendary band Egypt 80, led by Seun Kuti. With his new release and recent world tours, Seun Anikulapo Kuti picks up the mantle as undisputed champion and true prince of the Afrobeat movement, heading up Egypt 80, the extraordinary big band first fronted by his renowned father Fela Kuti.

Born in 1983, Seun first began performing with Egypt 80 at the age of nine, warming up audiences with renditions of his father’s songs. After Fela’s death in 1997, Seun stepped up to the front of the band, leading the celebrated combo as both lead vocalist and saxophonist. While his father’s influence cannot be understated, Kuti was determined to cut his own distinctive musical path, incorporating contemporary influences into the traditional Afrobeat approach.

Singer Patty Ascher and her expert crew of Sao Paulo,Brazil-based sidemen led by music director Marco Ponte and production supervisor Marco Menescal expertly navigate the sensuous territory of Bossa, Jazz ‘n’ Samba in ten Patty Ascher originals, and the classic evergreen The Summer Knows.

• Patty’s version of The Summer Knows by Marilyn & Alan Bergman and Michel Legrand has an arrangement by Dori Caymmi, a Brazilian singer, guitarist, songwriter, arranger, and producer who is a two-time Grammy Award winner.
• Dori’s arrangement is a tribute to another inspiration in Patty’s career, the French pianist and composer Michel Legrand, who has won 3 Oscars and 5 Grammys. Patty has already toured with him in Brazil twice, in 2008 and 2009, and further US dates together will be announced shortly.

Brazilian singer Patty Ascher has a bachelor’s degree in Literature from the University of São Paulo, Brazil, but she always had music in her life: her father Neno was part of a very successful Brazilian band from the 70s, Os Incríveis (The Incredibles). In 2007, Patty released her debut album: Bacharach Bossa Club. The album featured famous Burt Bacharach songs recorded by Patty with bossa nova arrangements and was a best seller at Uol – the biggest internet portal in Brazil. Her first album was released around the world, including the US.

In both September 2009 and 2010, Patty performed at Feinstein’s, the exclusive supper jazz club in the Loews Regency Hotel on Park Avenue in Manhattan. On Labor Day 2010, Patty also appeared at legendary comedian Jerry Lewis’ MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association) Telethon, a 21 hour-long fundraising event which is broadcast from Las Vegas to over 170 stations throughout the US.

Patty Ascher’s new album, released in Brazil under the title Deu Jazz no Samba, but in the rest of the world by ZOHO as Bossa, Jazz ‘n’ Samba, is a collection of 11 exquisite songs, with Patty singing both in English and Portuguese. She wrote most of the songs with co-writers Marco Pontes. Many great Brazilian musicians participate in this album, and Patty explains that it is kind of a tribute recording to them.

“We have so many talented musicians in Brazil, so we thought about making Bossa, Jazz & Samba as a tribute to these brilliant musicians. For me, it’s an honor to be able to have so many of these incredible players in our team”, says Patty.

With the talent, personality and elegance of Dori Caymmi, Amilson Godoy, Jota Morais, Eduardo Lages, Gilson Peranzetta, Aluisio Pontes, Cristovão Bastos – some of the great names, and arrangers who participate in this recording – and Patty’s one-of-a-kind voice, the result is an album filled with pop and jazz, bossa and samba, and a handful of latin ballads.

Roberto Menescal – a famous Brazilian songwriter and jazz guitarist and Patty Ascher’s mentor – is the production supervisor on this new album. Menescal, with Antonio Carlos Jobim a founding father of the Bossa Nova genre in the late 1950s and 60s, has performed and composed in a variety of Latin music genres, including Brazilian pop, Música Popular Brasileira, and Samba. He was also nominated for a Latin Grammy for his work with his son’s bossa group Bossacucanova in 2002. In addition to his role as production supervisor, he also plays his distinctive “bossa-jazz-guitar” in Sunrise: an English version, with English lyrics written by Patty, of the Brazilian song Amanhecendo, composed by Lula Freire and Roberto Menescal.

On the album’s opening track, Springtime, Patty comments, “I wrote this song when were coming from a gig in Chicago, in 2008: What’s “Jazz ‘n’ Samba”? Well, here is our answer – this is what this song is all about.”

Guitarist Rolando Grooscors is a rare find on today’s jazz scene: a unique voice that strengthens and expands the jazz idiom with sensitivity, clarity, and uncompromising integrity. Rolando’s warm, expressive tones and impeccable phrasing have been delighting audiences wherever he goes.

A two-time Latin Grammy nominee, Rolando Grooscors was born in Caracas, Venezuela. His love for Brazilian music motivated him to start different projects where Brazilian music was infused with Latin and Jazz influences. Here he began to develop a Jazz/Fusion style. The experience greatly influenced Rolando’s musical development.

Leading his own band, Rolando has recently released his debut CD, “THANKFUL”. The band is a sextet including Piano/keyboards, Bass, Sax/wind controller, drums and percussion.

His compositions have been called “masterful” and with the attention already received, Rolando is pushinghimself to have his voice defined in music, both as a sideman and as a band leader.

Located in Miami Beach, the Bass Museum of Art offers a dynamic year-round calendar of exhibitions exploring the connections between contemporary art and works of art from its permanent collection of Renaissance and Baroque paintings, sculpture and textiles and newly opened Egyptian Gallery. Artists’ projects, educational programs, lectures, concerts and free family days complement the works on view. Founded in 1963 when the City of Miami Beach accepted a collection of Renaissance and Baroque works of art from collectors John and Johanna Bass, the collection was housed in an Art Deco building designed in 1930 by Russell Pancoast. Architect Arata Isozaki designed an addition to the museum that doubled its size from 15,000 to 35,000 square feet between 1998 and 2002. Most recently, the museum selected internationally acclaimed Oppenheim Architecture + Design to lead its first phase of design and renovation tied to the 2010 completion of Miami Beach’s highly anticipated Collins Park. Oppenheim redesigned and relocated the museum’s arrival area to flow from and into the new park on Collins Avenue. For more information, please visit http://www.bassmuseum.org

Dogma Grill New Menu Tasting on Tuesday, July 26, 2011.  During this tasting we got to taste around 10 different menu items and all of them delicious.   I think my favorite was the bratwurst with of course sauerkraut and brown mustard, so yummy.  Then in close second was the chicago dog with yellow mustard, neon relish, chopped onions, chopped tomatoes, sport peppers (these do have a big bite to them, but really good), and a pickle spear.  There was a tie for third between the Cheese Steak Hoagie, The Roast Beef Po’ Boy (the au juice they serve with this is so YUMMY), the Fried Oyster Po’ Boy, the Fried Shrimp Po’ Boy, Chili Dog and all of the rest that I tried.  OH, they make there own Dogma Potato Chips and they are just awesome, the seasoning they put on them is so good.  So you should go by Dogma and try some items off of their new menu, you will not be disappointed.  I want to go back and eat more :-).

Gilberto Santa Rosa is part of the select few artists recognized by Billboard Magazine as an artist of the decade. Puerto Rican Santa Rosa developed a unique style of “soneo” (improvisation) in salsa that has gained him success in both “tropical” and “romantic” styles of the music. In the 1980s, Santa Rosa formed his own band and released a number of hits, including “Good Vibration,” “De Amor y Salsa” (Of Love and Salsa), “Punto de Vista” (Point of View), “Vivir Sin Ella” (Living without Her) and “Perspectiva.” In 1990, Santa Rosa was awarded the Billboard Lo Nuestro Award for Best Male Singer. In 2006, he released, “Directo Al Corazon,” and in 2007 he released Contraste which received Gold and Platinum certification.

Career Tribute to honor Cinema Novo pioneer and legendary auteur Arnaldo Jabor and screen his first film in 25 years, The Supreme Happiness; retrospective to feature classic performances by Fernanda Montenegro, Sonia Braga, Fernanda Torres, Marco Nanini and Paulo César Pereio

Inffinito Foundation of Miami, the premier independent promoter of Brazilian cinema and cultural arts around the world, today announced the official lineup of features, documentaries and short films scheduled to commemorate the 15th Annual Brazilian Film Festival of Miami, the largest annual showcase of independent Portuguese-language films from Brazil presented in the United States. Entries will be eligible to compete for the Festival’s Crystal Lens Awards for Best Feature Film, Best Short Film, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Screenplay, among other juried categories. The Festival is the only exhibition in the U.S. that receives perennial support from Brazil’s top public and private film production and promotion entities, including oil giant PETROBRAS, the Brazilian Ministry of Culture’s Audiovisual Secretariat and ANCINE (Agência Nacional do Cinema).

“To turn 15, it has a very special meaning in Brazil,” explains Brazilian Film Festival co-founder Viviane Spinelli. “During that time, the Festival has come of age, just like the Brazilian film industry is coming of age, and our films, our directors and our stars are being embraced by audiences around the world.”

During the past 15 years, the biggest names in Brazilian cinema have attended the Festival, including director Fernando Meirelles (City of God), actor Rodrigo Santoro (300, Carandiru) actor Selton Mello (To the Left of the Father, My Name Isn’t Johnny), actress Andrea Beltrão (Time of Fear), actress Glória Pires (Lula, the Son of Brazil), actor José Wilker (Elvis & Madona), actress Lília Cabral (In Therapy) and directors Bruno Barreto (Four Days in September) and Fabio Barreto (Lula, Son of Brazil).

Tickets are now on sale through Ticketmaster (www.ticketmaster.com), the Colony Theatre box office and the Miami Beach Cinematheque box office (www.mbcinema.com or www.miamibeachfilmsociety.com). Tickets at the Miami Beach Cinematheque are: $10 for general admission, $8 for Miami Beach Film Society members and $8 for students and seniors.

The complete schedule of screenings, special events (after-parties at Delano and Mondrian South Beach), ticket prices, scheduled VIP appearances, as well as regular news updates before and during the Festival, will be available online at the Festival’s website: www.brazilianfilmfestival.com/miami.

Inffinito Foundation’s Brazilian Film Festival is the leading international circuit for new films, filmmakers and talent emerging from the South American country, a member of the so-called “BRIC” nations (along with Russia, India and China), which is quickly gaining prominence in Hollywood and around the world as one of the fastest-growing centers for film production, distribution and cinematic consumerism. Launched in Miami in 1996, the Festival was created to cater to South Florida’s booming Brazilian population in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach corridor—now one of the largest living outside Brazil and the largest in any U.S. metropolitan area, at 250,000-plus and counting. Since then, the Festival has become a gateway for Brazilian cinema coming into the U.S. and a marketplace for filmmakers to meet with U.S. and Brazilian producers, distributors, sales agents and financiers. Festival founders Adriana Dutra, Cláudia Dutra and Viviane Spinelli have since expanded from Miami and in recent years have produced Inffinito Festivals for audiences in New York, London, Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Rome, Milan, Madrid, Barcelona, Vancouver and Canudos (Brazil).

The Festival receives professional support and programming input each year from prominent figures in the Brazilian film production, distribution and financial worlds in their roles as Festival Curators. They include: Oscar-nominated O2 Filmes director-producer Fernando Meirelles (City of God, The Constant Gardner); Paulo Sérgio Almeida, CEO of Filme B, Brazil’s leading box-office analysis and domestic film production and distribution monitoring agency; LC Barreto executive Paula Barreto, producer of Lula, Son of Brazil, Brazil’s official entry to the 2011 Oscar race for Best Foreign Language Film; Migdal Filmes CEO Iafa Britz, producer behind Brazil’s most expensive feature to date, Our Home: The Astral City (Nosso Lar); Gávea Filmes owner Bianca de Felippes, veteran producer of Carlota Joaquina, Princess of Brazil (1995), which launched the rebirth of modern-day cinematic production in Brazil; and, MovieMobz digital distribution company founder Marco Aurélio Marcondes, also an independent domestic distributor with Europa Filmes, the company behind A Grande Família and Ó Pai Ó!, as well as many Hollywood films, including Million Dollar Baby and Brokeback Mountain.

Announcement: Miami Beach icon Hotel Breakwater Officially Reopens

Hotel Breakwater Reopens On Ocean Drive After Multi-Million-Dollar Renovation

Luxury boutique resort and Art Deco jewel celebrates the past and supercharges the future

Hotel Breakwater, the upscale oceanfront boutique resort on Miami Beach’s legendary Ocean Drive, has officially reopened its doors. On the heels of a multi-million-dollar renovation, the property will again capture the essence of the city’s glamorous lifestyle with its 100 sleek rooms and suites, chic lounges and “unfiltered” concierge services.

“Hotel Breakwater is much more than a chic destination,” said Regional Hotel Director Axel Gasser. “We aim to provide our guests with an unfiltered lifestyle experience that goes beyond anything tangible. Our concierges, or ‘magicians,’ as we like to call them, along with several other programs unique to the property, help us achieve our goal of making each individual’s wishes—no matter how big or small—come true. This is what we call our 100 Percent Wish Guarantee.”

Architecture & Design
An Art Deco property built in 1939 by Yugoslavian-born architect Anton Skislewicz, Hotel Breakwater most recently underwent several years of upgrades under the direction of designer Stephen B. Jacobs. Since its inception, Hotel Breakwater has been regarded as a glamorous South Beach destination catering to a hip, of-the-moment clientele. The hotel became legendary in the 1980s when it was immortalized in the popular Calvin Klein advertisement for Obsession perfume featuring supermodel Kate Moss and shot by Bruce Weber on the famed rooftop terrace.

In spite of a long series of renovations, the hotel’s décor has remained true to the classic Art Deco styling and color palette. With 100 guest rooms and suites featuring modern furnishings, luxurious fabrics and stylish accents, the historic property now matches the clean, sophisticated vibe of its fashion-forward clientele.

Guestrooms & Amenities
Standard rooms, available with city or ocean views, each feature a foyer, king-sized bed, sitting area, writing desk, flat-screen television, entertainment unit, iPod docking station, high-speed internet access, organic mini bar and bathroom with a rejuvenating rainforest shower, double sinks and Pharmacopia products. Private penthouses exude true exclusivity, with scenic ocean views, living rooms and secluded terraces, while select penthouse terraces feature private plunge pools.

Hotel Breakwater also houses several lounges to satisfy a variety of downtime styles, whether one is looking to chill out, entertain or conduct a power meeting. Standing five stories above the South Beach Art Deco District, Intimissi Lounge is an intimate rooftop sanctuary offering a sense of tranquility, with sprawling daybeds, plush loveseats and unobstructed panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. Upon nightfall, the candlelit deck, accented with soft lighting and music, transforms into an adults-only tropical oasis. Two floors below, the Wellness Garden is a poolside retreat where guests can relax in cabanas, enjoy massages and wade in the floating lap pool. The hotel’s guest-only beach zone is located directly across Ocean Drive, offering lounge service along with a variety of water-sports activities for those seeking the definitive South Beach experience. For those who must attend to business, the state-of-the-art, butlered Internet Lounge is at their service.

Coral Gables, FL 33146
www.lowemuseum.org

In celebration of the exhibition, Sacred Stories, Timeless Tales, the Lowe presents another form of storytelling: the art of shadow puppetry.

Pablo Cano and Jim Hammond present “DOG, A Shadow Puppet Play.” Cano has collaborated with master puppeteer Jim Hammond in its writing and production. It is a story about a dog that pursues a “red squeaky ball” through ten famous paintings and sculptures in art history. The ball is used as a metaphor for each of our simplest pursuits of happiness. Keeping true with his use of found materials for his artwork, Pablo created each shadow puppet from plastic BEWARE OF THE DOG signs. “DOG” brings together art education, music, and entertainment to young and old alike.

The performance is recommended for ages 6 years and up and lasts approximately 40 minutes. The room will be very dark.

Admission is $10 for Lowe members; $15 for non-members

Preview: Friday, August 5th 6pm-9pm
Opening Reception: Saturday, August 6th 7pm-10pm
Barry Gross Gallery
3335 NE 32nd St.
Ft. Lauderdale

Art Studio Miami and the Barry Gross Gallery present Art From The Heart: The Art Experience, exhibiting the work of the children from Art Studio Miami alongside the passionate artists from EXPOSED The Art Project.

In June 2011 we premiered our first annual exhibition at the Barry Gross Gallery in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Every year we will affiliate EXPOSED the Art Project with a charitable organizations to whom we will donate proceeds from the art sales. We also donate our time to the charities. The charity during the inaugural show was Art Studio Miami whose mission is to empower young minds by providing a safe location where youth are inspired and guided by artists, teachers and professional mentors who support the student’s education and career development through the integration of creative holistic arts.

Barry Gross spent several days giving art lessons to the children at Art Studio Miami in May. The students were able to experience Barry’s personal technique of incorporating textures and emotions into their work while using found objects from their own personal journeys.

The artwork resulting from that encounter will be on display at the Barry Gross Gallery August 5-20, 2011. Pre-Opening night on Friday August 5th will be celebrated by the children who created this work along with their families, Art Studio Miami affiliates, members of EXPOSED, and the general public.

Sales from the show will benefit and support Art Studio Miami to continue their programming for at risk youth. As well as sales of the young artist artwork, each member of EXPOSED the Art Project will donate one piece of art each to be sold to benefit the studio. The donation will include a drawing by Barry Gross, photography by Adela Holmes and Presscott McDonald and music by Neal Fox.

The Bright Light Social Hour is an American rock band from Austin, Texas. Born out of a university art-rock collective, The Bright Light Social Hour has evolved into an unabashedly wide-screen rock group, melding fists-up rock and roll with muscular funk, soul, and psychedelia. The band recently swept the 29th Annual Austin Music Awards during SXSW 2011 with an unprecedented 6 wins, including Band of the Year, Album of the Year and Song of the Year (“Detroit”).

The Central Texas-raised young men of The Bright Light Social Hour have built their growing reputation through exhilarating widely-acclaimed live shows, including the 2009 Austin City Limits Festival. In culmination of their studied development, the band released their debut full-length album in late 2010, simply titled “The Bright Light Social Hour”. Recorded in five studios around Austin during summer 2010, the album is founded on sun-drenched optimism, raucous youth, and an innovative brew of American music of varying types – hard rock and roll, indie, rhythm and blues, dance and soul. Producer Danny Reisch of Good Danny’s utilized the best elements of vintage and modern recording to achieve a sound both forward-looking and evocative of 1970s hi-fi.

MSTRKRFT (pronounced Master-craft) are the Daft Punk-loving alter ego of Death from Above 1979’s Jesse F. Keeler along with producer Al-P. Hailing from Toronto, the duo makes a move from DFA 1979’s abrasive rock to robotic electronic complete with vocoders and handclaps. In addition to releasing two singles (“Easy Love” and “Work on You”) and an LP in July 2006 on Last Gang Records, MSTRKRFT have remixed several buzz bands such as Metric, Wolfmother, the Kills, and Bloc Party. As their profile grew (and their album was re-released by Modular) they also began remixing bigger names like Kylie Minogue, Usher, and John Legend as well as poppier artists like Annie and Jesse McCartney. For their second album, 2009’s Fist of God, the duo jumped to Dim Mak/Downtown and scored guest appearances from Ghostface Killah, N.O.R.E., John Legend and E-40. www.MSTRKRFT.com

Annette Recommends Exquisito Restaurant in Little Havana

We have heard so many great things about Exquisito Restaurant in Little Havana so we finally decided to go.   Wow, we should have go sooner!  The place is small but the food is awesome. I got the Ham Shank with boiled yuca and the best soup I have had in a long time.  The ham just fell off the bone and the flavor was so good, with just a hint of smoke (Yummy).  James got the Fried King Fish and French Fries, the fish was really good and cooked just right.  Their prices are so inexpensive and their specials are even a better deal.  So if you have not tried Exquisito, don’t wait as long as we did :-).

Photographs of Marlene, Marlene, Same Name Two Different Artists at 6th Street Container on 7/22/11

Marlene, Marlene, Same Name Two Different Artists at 6th Street Container Art Space on Friday, July 22, 2011.  What a wonderful exhibition, Marlene Lopez video art is So amazing and Marlene de Lazaro photographs is outstanding.

Photographer Marlene de Lazaro and video artist Marlene Lopez’s imagery are in the opposite end of the spectrum. De Lazaro’s photography’s serenety and quietness gives the viewer a deep sense of zen like feeling, where Lopez’s videos move at a very past face, contain high energy and are very experimental. It is the contrast of the two what decided Adal Delgado, chief curator at the 6th street container to have them together in the same space.

Exhibition runs until August 15th. 6th Street Container is open from 10 am to 4 pm. Monday thru Friday.

The Grand Opening of Dream South Beach was a Grandiose Affair By Betty Alvarez

With owners Sant Singh Chatwal and Vikram Chatwal, the grand opening of Dream South Beach Hotel was a spectacular event with many surprises. First, we were surprised as we made way at the red carpet with a fire eater as he did many tricks to the guests of the party and hotel guests. A glass of champagne awaited each guest as they were transported to the rooftop were the party was in full swing.

Guests were treated to cocktails and for this hot weather: cocktail popsicles which really gave a kick to the party. Appetizers from mini burgers to tuna tartar were served. By the lovely pool area, models gave a fire show in the water. It really wowed the guests. DJ mixes by Andrew and Andrew gave the crowd great vibes of today and yesteryear music.

It was an unforgettable summer social event.

Aquaphonics support both nights — August 12th & 13th, 2011

Perpetual Groove returns to Fort Lauderdale August 12th & 13th for a two-night stand at the Culture Room that concludes a five-night mini tour through Florida. Local electro-soul funk band Aquaphonics will provide support both nights.

Perpetual Groove has had quite a run over the last two years. The genre-spanning band released two studio projects including Heal, a full-length record and Honey Cuts, an EP. Add to that a slew of sold out shows, major festival appearances and the success of their own annual Memorial Day festival Amberland, and it is clear that PGroove has been reinvigorated with the addition of keyboardist John Hruby (formerly of Guest). Born on the steps of The Savannah College of Art & Design in Savannah, GA in 1999, the band now hails from Athens, GA and has once again reinvented their sound. The lineup adjustment, a change in management and a new perspective has given way to a beautiful, timeless set of recordings and live shows that signifies the rebirth of a band that has carved out its own unique sound by performing over 1,200 live shows in their brief career.

This summer, PGroove is buzzing with festival appearances at Riverbend, Wakarusa, Eco Music Festival, Gathering of the Vibes, Camp Barefoot, Fall Hookahville, Catskill Chill Music Festival, Blackwater Music Festival, Family Roots Fall Festival and Jam Cruise 10.

“The Culture Room for us and our fans consistently rates as a favorite venue,” says PGroove guitarist Brock Butler. “We will be giving away two ‘Florida Passports’ for this mini-tour where two lucky winners will get free admission to all five Florida shows, a meet and greet, a signed Summer Tour poster and some other special goodies. Just check our Facebook page or PGroove.com for more information.”

Aquaphonics will be also be playing the weekly BLP Rockout with your Cookout on Sunday, August 14th at the Hurricane Bar & Lounge (640-7 East Atlantic Avenue, Delray Beach, FL 33483 | 561.278.0282 | www.HurricaneLounge.com). As always, the BLP Rockout with your Cookout features a FREE BBQ from 6-8pm for bar patrons, and the FREE show starts shortly after. For more information visit www.BrotherlyLoveProductions.com.

Farewell 31 Days of German Riesling German Dinner and Riesling Wine Pairing 7/28/11

SWIRL 101: Eat & Drink Just Like the Germans Do
July 28
The Blue Piano
4600 NE 2nd Avenue
Miami, Florida 33137

Say Buh-Bye! to “31 Days of German Riesling.”
Next week’s “Swirl 101” feature is a departure from the format you all have become accustomed to. This is a bit more of a celebratory event…

What better way to bid Deutschland’s Noble Grape farewell than by hosting a bonified GERMAN-inspired menu and wine pairing. A tad more lavish than the normal samplings, Chef Cesar will be recreating German classics “a la Blue Piano” that feature a 4-course dinner paired with 6, maybe 7, wines carefully selected by the Wine Lass herself.

Menu:
Course 1: Goose Schmaltz, Homemade Bekos, Snipped Chives, Smoked Schinken, Pickled Veggies, Good Ole Country Bread
Course 2: Potato Wrapped Wursts, Slow Cooked Red Cabbage, Spicy Mustard
Course 3: Crackly Pork Belly, Bacon Brussels Sprouts, Potato Parmentier, Sweet ‘n Sour Apples & Onions
Dessert: Assorted Sweet Stuffs

What can we say? We love us some Germans. Let the riesling flow! Dinner starts at a Miamian 7:30pm. Be there in your finest lederhosen, drindls or just a pair of Birkenstocks.

And how much will this cost me? Why $45 a person, plus tax and gratuity. Just one thing, please call us to rsvp, 305.576.7919 or email us. Space is limited to 30 people and filling up quickly.

Model Casting Call – August 13th
Animalia Pet Expo is casting models and dogs on Saturday August 13 from 2 pm – 5 pm at Miami Beach Convention Center to model internationally acclaimed pet couture designer clothing Kiki Hamman. “Animalia Pet Expo is a high end show for all. We are delighted to bring fashion to Miami dogs,” stated Animalia Pet Expo show director, Jolanta Mazewski-Dryden.

Dogs chosen will model alongside with attractive human models who are also wearing designer clothing. “The fashion show will take place at the Animalia Pet Expo on Saturday August 27th and Sunday August 28th at The Miami Beach Convention Center. Criteria for choosing the dog models is that they are attractive, outgoing, obedient, and attentive and possess a good runway strut. It will be a different show, with both humans and pets wearing couture clothing. My designs for the event are illustrations that are brought to life and not costumes,” stated Kiki Hamman. Save the Date to Save The World

Bayside Rocks Music & Arts Festival scheduled for Saturday,
November 19, 2011 at Bayfront Park in Downtown Miami

A star-filled tribute to music legend Bob Marley will mark a concert extravaganza as the 2nd annual Bayside Rocks Music & Arts Festival offers up a jam-packed cavalcade of stars, and a day of peace, love & unity on November 19th 2011 in Miami, Florida.

This year’s Bayside Rocks will feature world music headliners Bunny Wailer, Luciano, Tabou Combo, Cultura Profetica, Gondwana, Warrior King and The Wailers, as well as some of world music’s most promising up-and-coming talent. Plus a special tribute to the Honorable Robert Nesta ‘Bob’ Marley on the 30th anniversary of his passing.

Produced by ROCKAZ MVMT (www.rockazmvnt.com), Bayside Rocks was designed as a fun filled day of social consciousness, community and environmental awareness on a musical platform with an urgent humanitarian effort to fight poverty and feed the hungry whilst providing ecologically engineered economic transformation on a global scale.
Music, art, fashion and food from around the world provide the backdrop to a truly amazing cultural experience.

Through the universal language of music, as well as vision for the arts and cultural media, ROCKAZ MVMT and its president and CEO Alfonso D’Niscio Brooks are striving to change the world for the better by empowering people to make a positive difference.

“Our ultimate goal is to uplift the spirit and inspire people of every ilk to give of themselves to help make the world a better place in which to live,” said D’Niscio Brooks. “We’re accomplishing this task by spreading art, culture and music while raising money to end poverty, feed the hungry and shelter the homeless.”

This year, concert proceeds will include a food drive benefiting Curley’s House http://www.curleyshouse.com an organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for low-to-moderate income individuals, families, the elderly, youth-at-risk, the abused, and HIV/AIDS infected individuals by providing the nutrition they need. If you can dream of a better world, you can make it happen.

For Alfonso D’Niscio Brooks, the driving force behind ROCKAZ MVMT, turning that dream into reality has become a vocational signature. Through the universal language of music, as well as a vision for the arts and cultural media, Alfonso has tapped into the social consciousness to uplift the spirit and inspire people of every ilk to give of themselves to help make the world a better place in which to live.

ROCKAZ MVMT produces a series of entertaining and fun-filled music/arts events around the world, all custom-tailored for the enjoyment of families and individuals of all ages and musical tastes. These masterful events feature multiple headliner acts, as well as some of the world’s most promising up-and-coming talent. Music, art, fashion and food from around the world provide the backdrop to a truly amazing cultural experience.

As befits its world-changing raison d’etre of empowering people to help people, ROCKAZ MVMT also is committed to changing the world through sound environmental practices. All ROCKAZ MVMT events incorporate myriad green initiatives (minimizing waste, recycling, etc.).

In the US, each spring ROCKAZ MVMT hosts the Miami Reggae Festival in Coconut Grove. With summer comes the annual Carifest NYC in New York City. And in the fall, Bayside Rocks Festival brings world music to downtown Miami. A fourth annual festival is slated to be inaugurated in Miami during Winter 2012. Additional festivals fill out the ROCKAZ MVMT calendar of events in North America.

But it takes more than great music to turn the dream of a better world into a reality. That’s why proceeds from ROCKAZ MVMT events are donated to established non-profit organizations that fight poverty, house the homeless and feed the hungry in the US and abroad. In fact, patrons are asked to bring at least two items of non-perishable food as a part of the cost of admission.

Changing the world for the better is an ongoing process in which ROCKAZ MVMT is proud to be a part. But perhaps the greatest gift we can offer people – and ourselves – is the empowerment that comes from knowing you can make a difference, and that we are in fact, making a difference.

IKO IKO with very special guest, Jeff Zavac, in Concert for an Evening of Blues, Rock, and Urban Swamp Music at The Big Easy in Downtown Hollywood, FL on Friday, July 22, 2011

Iko-Iko, Miami’s original “Urban Swamp Blues” band will perform a special concert event when Jeff Zavac (saxophonist with Aretha Franklin, The Murphys, solo artist) joins the band onstage at The Big Easy in downtown Hollywood, FL. A native of Toledo, Ohio, Zavac spends much of his time in South Florida after music industry legend Henry Stone handpicked him for his Miami-based record label. A gifted signature artist, Zavac was born without his eyesight, and his releases with Stone’s label include Instrumental Magic for The Miami Lighthouse for The Blind.

This is a very rare opportunity to hear Zavac perform in South Florida and, according to Iko-Iko frontman Graham Wood Drout, “the band is really excited to be able to bring this show to The Big Easy. Musically, this is the ‘real thing’ and not something you can hear everyday.” The performance will be a FREE SHOW.

Reserved seating is available (and recommended) by calling (954) 924-3006.

Highlighting more than 30-years, IKO-IKO’s Graham Wood Drout received multiple awards including both Song of the Year from The Blues Critics Choice Awards, Best Blues Band and Songwriter of the Year from New Times Magazine and a Jammy Award for Best Blues Band. The band has performed with music legends of all styles including Bo Diddley, Jimmy Buffett, Ron Wood, Ivan Neville and many others. Blues Revue Magazine describes their music as “Soul filling ideas that flow out of [Drout’s pen and into the heart of the listener…the result is breathtaking.”

With top ten songs on XM, Sirius, MusiChoice, AAA, Hot AC, and internet radio around the world, Iko-Iko continues to draw fans to their live shows. Artists of all genres cover Drout’s songs and Living Blues magazine included The Bittersweet Sessions in the top 20 CDs of 2008. Drout reached #1 on MusicChoice with The Ghosts of Mississippi, and #2 on the Contemporary Blues Radio charts with Big Toe – both performed by Albert Castiglia on his release, A Stone’s Throw, that tied for second place as 2006 Blues CD of the Year on Sirius Radio networks. Today, the band is more energetic, vibrant and musical than ever with live shows that will reassure anyone that their mojo is definitely workin’!

The Big Easy Bar and Grille is Hollywood, Florida’s only venue for live Jazz and Blues music. They feature some of the hottest entertainment weekly from Wednesday through Sunday. In addition to supporting and showcasing the best music, their acclaimed kitchen showcases a variety of its own. The classic comfort foods and American fare combine with a cajun flair that is the perfect accent to the live music. The Big Easy has a great reputation for some of the friendliest servers and staff in town as well as bringing it all to you at prices let the good times roll! Dine indoors, outdoors on our covered patio, or alfresco along the neighborhood’s sidewalk of Downtown Hollywood.

The Main Street Players is pleased to announce its upcoming production of Extremities by William Mastrosimone. This riveting, thought-provoking drama about a woman, Marjorie, who escapes her would-be rapist and then metes out her own justice has been intriguing and gripping audiences for twenty years, all the time demanding that we examine our own attitudes towards crime and the justice system. As Marjorie’s justice becomes more and more like revenge, the arrival of her two roommates forces all four people – rapist, victim, and bystanders – to examine where we draw the line between intent and action, and between what is justifiable and what is not. The play contains adult content and strong language, and parents are cautioned.

Only 240 of these exquisite bottles are in existence and will be unveiled, offered as tastings and available by the bottle ($450) or 2-ounce glass ($32) the night of the dinner, July 21.

Tequilier Heriberto Ovideo traveled to Amatitán, Mexico, believed to be the birthplace of Tequila, to nurture and select specially crafted double-barrel reposado Tequila from the House of Herradura distillery that would be reserved for The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami. The process began in 2010 with 100 percent blue Weber Agave tequila “resting” in toasted oak barrels for 11 months before maturing in a second hand-made barrel. Finally in April 2011, Ovideo journeyed to the distillery to taste and choose the best of three barrels awaiting his arrival. The preferred barrel captured smooth, light, earthy flavors and was hand-bottled at Casa Herradura.

Voted “Best Jazz Musician in Miami (2009)” by the Miami New Times, pianist-composer Silvano Monasterios hails from Caracas, Venezuela. Silvano has performed with a number of important artists including Ira Sullivan, Terumasa Hino & the World Jazz All-Stars, Othello Molineaux, Dave Liebman, Melton Mustafa, Marc Johnson, Donald Byrd, Alan Harris, Paquito D’Rivera, Arturo Sandoval, Nathen Page, Randy Brecker, Sammy Figueroa, Paul Wertico, Mark Egan, Shakira, David Lee Roth, and Nestor Torres.

In 1998, Silvano was voted “New Artist of the Year” at the Hennessy Cognac Jazz Search in New York City. 1998 also marked the release of his first CD, Roads Not Taken, which received outstanding reviews in the U.S. and Latin America. In 2006, his new recording, Fostered, was released. Fostered features all original compositions, including the award-winning “Avila”.

Silvano composed, performed & co-produced two songs, including the title track, of the 2008 GRAMMY-nominated album, “The Magician”, by Sammy Figueroa & His Latin Jazz Explosion. This wonderful CD was nominated as “Best Latin Jazz Album of the Year”.

The Fourth World Ensemble, emerging in 2007 from Monasterios’ desire to experiment with the fusion of Latin Rhythms, World Music and Pure Jazz, features Monasterios on piano, accompanied by percussion, drums, bass and saxophone. The ensemble performs all original music composed and arranged by Silvano. This year saw the release of their new CD, Unconditional, on Savant Records. Exhibiting an insatiable appetite for challenge and change, Silvano has recorded eight new and imaginative compositions. While this latest work is likely destined to be classified as “Latin Jazz” with its assortment of indigenous percussion instruments and rhythms, it is totally devoid of the Latin clichés often encountered in pseudo-Latin jazz. Instead, it showcases an artist with a complete understanding of his complex Venezuelan roots, who is aware of the Austro-Germanic-European compositional heritage and who, at the same time, is steeped in the great American jazz tradition.

Photographs from SXSE 2011 trip to Key West on 7/16-17/11

SXSE 2011 trip to Key West on Saturday, July 16th through Sunday, July 17, 2011.

Our good friend and veteran writer/blogger, Maria de los Angeles, sets up and runs a social media retreat every year called South by Southeast (SXSE). This year it took place in Key West and gave us a way to rationalize a mini-vacation, since it was technically “working”.

In addition, she got Chevrolet/GM Southeast to hook us up with a cool Chevy Equinox (dubbed the “Soulmobile” for the weekend). It is a very nice vehicle and made the drive much more enjoyable.

A big shoutout goes to our host hotel, the Eden House. What a fun, quaint place. It has a very historic, homey feel and some nice amenities (like the “serve yourself” library). A wonderful place to relax.

On the way down, we decided to stop at a small place called Evelyn’s for breakfast. True homestyle cooking in Key Largo. If you aren’t looking, you’ll miss it, but it is definitely worth a try.

The main event of the SXSE was the Saturday night Pub Crawl. Maria had set us up at the The Rum Barrel to start, then at the Green Parrot with a performance by PALO! for the ending of the evening. A stop by Mallory Square for sunset is always mandatory.

Sunday, the Soulmobile made a run over to Fort Zachary Taylor State Park. This is one of our favorite places in Key West. It has the best beach (though that is only relative to other Key West beaches), a great cafe, nice nature trails, decent (though not spectacular), easy and cheap snorkeling, and the cool, historic fort.

On the way home, we stopped by Porky’s for lunch. Then it was on to Rum Runners for drinks and waiting out the storm.

A great time was had by all. SXSE truly puts the SOCIAL back in Social Media! Hope to see you all next year.

For additional images and commentary, be sure to check out the SXSE Facebook Page. Follow SXSE on Twitter. Find more photos on the SXSE Flickr. And we hope to see you next year!

Disco was influenced by (but not only) funk, Latin and soul music. The disco sound has soaring, often reverberated vocals over a steady “four-on-the-floor” beat, an hi-hat pattern with an open hi-hat on the off-beat, and a prominent, syncopated electric bass line sometimes consisting of octaves. The Fender Jazz Bass is often associated with disco bass lines, because the instrument itself has a very prominent ‘voice’ in the musical mix. In most disco tracks, strings, horns, electric pianos, and electric guitars create a lush background sound. Orchestral instruments such as the flute are often used for solo melodies, and unlike in rock, lead guitar is rarely used. Well-known late 1970s disco performers included Donna Summer, Gloria Gaynor, The Bee Gees, A Taste of Honey, Candi Station, KC and the Sunshine Band, Chic, and The Jacksons. Donna Summer would become the first well-known and most popular disco artist, giving her the title ‘The Queen of Disco’, and also played a part in pioneering the electronic sound that later became a part of disco.

Last but not least, Disco fashion was very trendy in the late 1970s. Discothèque-goers often wore expensive and extravagant fashions for nights out at their local disco, such as sheer, flowing Halston dresses for women and shiny polyester Qiana shirts for men with pointy collars, preferably open at the chest, often worn withdouble-knit polyester shirt jackets with matching trousers known as the leisure suit. Necklaces and medallions were a common fashion accessory.

Up For Debate Gender Secrecy Parental Right Or Child Abuse? 7/20/11

Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at 7:00 p.m.
Next@19th
137 NE 19th Street
Miami, FL 33132

Admission is free and this event is open to the public.

Gender identity questions surface recently as the buzz of “Baby Storm,” the infant being raised gender-neutral, hits the media. On Wednesday, July 20, 2011, Elizabeth Schwartz moderates Next@19th’s gender secrecy debate, a topic that sweeps the nation as an increasing number of families choose to conceal their children’s gender identities in effort to raise them in a gender-neutral environment.

In a format modeled after the ancient Sanhedrin which legislated Jewish law, ideas will be introduced by a central facilitator and put to audiences for debate. Join the Next@19th community as they discuss how the Jewish culture and this new controversial way of parenting can influence your child’s upbringing.

About Next@19th: Moving Jewish Culture Forward
Next@19th was founded in July 2010 to engage South Florida’s diverse community in fresh culture, learning and spiritual experience through a Jewish lens. Producing original programming, the organization will host a range of events and activities. This 2010 – 2011 season promises celebrations of music, literary arts, visual art, education and spirituality as well as dynamic projects in partnership with Miami Book Fair International, the Jewish Film Festival and University of Wynwood. Next@19th is located at 137 NE 19 Street, Miami FL 33132, on the campus of Temple Israel’s historic site in downtown Miami. Opening Production at Miami Beach Stage Door Theatre at Byron Carlyle
Is a Baby Boomer’s Delight

Combining the best songs of the Baby Boomer era with a lot of humor, a stellar cast and a veteran technical team, “Suds” is the ideal choice for Miami Beach Stage Door Theatre’s debut at the landmark Byron Carlyle in Miami Beach. The show begins its run on Friday, July 29 and continues through Sunday, September 4.

The highly anticipated opening of the Miami Beach Stage Door Theatre will not disappoint! Derelle Bunn and David Torres, co-founders of the Broward Stage Door Theatre, their flagship theatre in Coral Springs, are widely known for producing large-scale, award-winning musicals. The theatre received a Carbonell Award for Best Production of a Musical in 2011, and with the opening of “Suds” at the Byron Carlyle, they bring their 19 years of successful theatre production experience to Miami Beach.

“Suds” features more than 40 hits from the ‘60s, with the accompaniment of a live three-piece band. From “Chapel of Love” to “Johnny Angel,” “Suds,” will take you back to your first kiss, your first make-out session under the boardwalk or your first ride in a GTO. The music serves as a fun-loving backdrop for the hilarious story of three girls trying to find love in a laundromat, and it bubbles over with fun!

The show’s previous run at the Broward Stage Door Theatre garnered rave reviews, and while originally scheduled to run there for six weeks, it was so successful that it was extended for six months. With the same production team for “Suds” at the Miami Beach Stage Door Theatre, the show will certainly maintain the Stage Door’s high level of excellence.

“Opening in the summer, we wanted to kick off the season with a light, fun musical production, continuing our tradition of presenting the best in musical theatre,” says Derelle Bunn. “We are looking forward to our new second home and to working with the area businesses to make North Beach a thriving destination for locals and tourists alike.”

Technical Credits: Award-winning director/actor Dan Kelley, a fixture on the local theater scene for 25 years, directs “Suds.” He is often recognized from his appearance on the pilot of Burn Notice and is a regular on the HGTV series My House is Worth What? Bill Hirschman, theatre critic at the Sun-Sentinel, praised Dave Nagy for his musical direction of “Suds.” “As musical director, Nagy has masterfully led the quartet in creating nougat smooth harmonies…The entertainment is as comfortable as a pair of saddle shoes.” The set is crafted by Stage Door Scenic, Lighting by Ardean Landhuis and Costumes by Costume World, the world’s largest costume house.

Following “Suds,” South Florida arts patrons are in for an exciting 2011-2012 season of award-winning musicals, beginning with “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.” The season’s roster also includes “Lend Me a Tenor,” “Guys and Dolls,” Irving Berlin’s “I Love a Piano,” “Annie,” Neil Simon’s funniest and most famous comedy “Last of the Red Hot Lovers,” the all-time favorite “My Fair Lady,” “The All Night Strut!” and “Little Shop of Horrors,” one of the longest running Off-Broadway shows of all time.

Fuego and Los Hermanos Rosario Merengue Night Marlins Super Saturday 7/23/11

Fuego And Los Hermanos Rosario Teaming Up For Merengue Night Edition Of Marlins Super Saturday
July 23, 7:10 p.m.
Sun Life Stadium
2267 Dan Marino Blvd.
Miami, 33056

On July 23, Baker Concrete Marlins Super Saturday will feature an exciting post-game performance by FUEGO and the Dominican merengue band Los Hermanos Rosario. First pitch versus the New York Mets is set for 7:10 p.m. at Sun Life Stadium (2267 Dan Marino Blvd., Miami, 33056). Merengue band Oro Solido will also be on-site signing autographs pregame at the Strike Zone and throwing out the first pitch. The first 10,000 fans will receive a Florida Marlins All-Star Poster courtesy of Franklin Communications.

Urban/tropical artist Miguel Duran, better known as FUEGO, recently released his long-awaited album, La Música del Futuro. The hit single “Que Buena Tu Ta” song is a fusion of “Urban Mambo” with a touch of Indian featuring Deevani, who’s known for her Hindi vocals in songs with Daddy Yankee, Tito “El Bambino” and Beenie Man. FUEGO’s summer hit, “Super Estrella” features Omega and continues to rise in the popularity charts. Also, his latest song, “Mi Alma Se Muere” featuring Pitbull and Omega has received close to two million visits on his YouTube page. Fuego has worked with major artists like Don Omar, Rick Ross, Omega, Serani and Pitbull.

Dominican merengue group Los Hermanos Rosario originally consisted of brothers Toño, Pepe, Rafa and Luis Rosario. Since childhood, the brothers created music even with self-made instruments such as bottle caps, plastic containers, pots and pans. They formed in the Dominican Republic city of Higuey in May 1978. The 14-piece orchestra has had a series of very successful albums among those are “Los Hermanos Rosario, 1983,” “Bomba Mi Hermano, 1990 ” “Insuperables, 1991” “Los Dueños del Swing 1995” and “Bomba, 2000.” Although Toño Rosario left the group for his solo career, Pepe, Rafa and Luis, Rosario continue to perform and tour across the globe.

Each of the Marlins’ 11 Saturday home games this year is designated as a “Super Saturday.” The highlight of each “Super Saturday” is a post-game concert/show featuring internationally-acclaimed recording artists. The post-game performance is free with each ticket purchased for that evening’s game. Baker Concrete Super Saturdays also include pregame parties at The Strike Zone at Gate H featuring celebrity, player and alumni autograph sessions, appearances from Billy The Marlin, Lil’ Billy, the Mermaids and Manatees, special prizes, live TV/radio broadcasts and giveaways.

Fans can enhance their “Super Saturday” experience by purchasing VIP “Pit Passes.” Available for $25 each at www.marlins.com/supersaturdays, the passes provide on-the-field access to the post-game concert. For more information on Super Saturdays and to purchase tickets, call 1-877-MARLINS or visit the Marlins’ official websites at www.marlins.com and www.marlinsbeisbol.com.

House Sundays in Miami Grand Opening 7/24/11

Sunday, July 24th.
Villa 221
221 NE 17th Street
Miami, FL 33132.

House Sundays is a new gay Sunday night in Miami with a Grand Opening on Sunday, July 24th.

The venue is a house that has been turned into a nightclub and event space. (It is actually two houses connected). They opened about eight months ago and have been asking Edison Farrow / SoBeSocialClub.com to be involved with a gay night since they opened. But, at the time he already had three weekly events and was not able to add any new nights to his schedule. Recently, Buck15 got involved with the house. They now have one house which they call “Buck House”.

House Sundays will be a fun house party! There are several different rooms. So, it can have a different feel each week depending on which rooms are open. There is a front yard with lounge chairs, and a front porch. One side has a bar and DJ. The other side has a bar in the former dining room and a DJ by the fireplace. The upstairs has been transformed into a stunning art gallery.

The house is located just off of 17th Street and Biscayne Boulevard. It is the first house behind the Burger King. It is three blocks north of the Arsht Center and two blocks west of the Venetian Causeway to Miami Beach. The address is 221 NE 17th Street Miami, FL 33132.

On this day, fashion shows by Azucar, Robert Graham, ICandy Swimwear, Adame, Nikki Beach Lifestyle BEDE Watoes and Le Doux strutted the run way.

L’Occitane gave out samples and demonstrations of their line while other beauty demonstrations were also given during the event.

“We are so excited to present MOD SWIM WEEK 2012 at the beautiful Art Deco Sagamore Hotel. Hosting our events at one convenient location will offer our designers and guests a more intimate and personal experience as we look to host three days of runway shows, and a private celebrity gifting suite. Our exclusive guests, including press, buyers, media, and VIPS, will have a first hand look at the next season of swimwear, while enjoying the beautiful views from the Sagamore rooftop penthouse,” said Christine Henry.

The oceanfront Sagamore Hotel, located in the heart of South Beach within walking distance off of Lincoln Road, has been dubbed The Art Hotel for its collection of world-renowned contemporary art, known as the Cricket Taplin Collection. A staple of Miami night life, only steps away from the area’s best restaurants, clubs, and stores, it is the perfect home for the 2011 MOD Swim Week and the celebrities, press, and VIP’s that will be sure to return from last year including Perry Reeves (HBO’s Entourage) and Devorah Rose (CW’s High Society).

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week presents Diesel at Cabana Grande By Betty Alvarez

On July 14, Diesel, a fashion industry legend and a pioneer in the world of denim and casual wear kicked off his line at the Mercedes Benz Fashion week at the Cabana Grande area. This line always remained both outside and ahead of trends. Afterwards, guest enjoyed a special cocktail reception sponsored by Sky Vodka and The Raleigh.

Despite Diesel’s extraordinary growth, its philosophy is the same as when Renzo Rosso created it in 1978. He envisaged a brand that would stand for passion, individuality and self-expression. Today, Diesel continues to blaze its own trail. It is on a continuing mission to challenge the status quo, experiment with new ideas, innovate and provoke. Diesel thrives on change: it produces no less than 3,000 new products each season and each one derives from a process of enormous creative freedom.

Diesel is a truly worldwide organization. From its Headquarters in Breganze, it directly manages around 20 subsidiaries across Europe, Asia and the Americas. It is now present in more than 80 countries with 5,000 points of sale, and more than 500 Diesel mono-brand stores. Diesel is part of the holding Only the Brave, which also incorporates 55DSL, Maison Martin Margiela, Viktor & Rolf, and Staff International.

A Wynwood Photo Essay by Ralph Ventura

{A Guest Article by Photographer and Writer Ralph Ventura.}

Tomorrowland
by Ralph Ventura

Urban, hip, gritty, gentrified, artsy, blue-collar, new, and decaying. Wynwood is a place that defies description and one that presents us with a paradox.

Wynwood had it’s origins in the great Puerto Rican migration of the 1950’s. People came here in droves seeking a better life for themselves and their families, seeking a better tomorrow. Like immigrants before them, they founded a neighborhood that met their needs and reflected their character, all within the limited resources available to them. Through the years, Wynwood remained an island of genuineness in a city that was constantly being remade. It was an area apart.

As with many areas where rents are low and warehouse space plentiful, Wynwood eventually attracted artists. The artists in turn attracted the galleries, which in turn attracted collectors, dealers, restaurants, bars and speculators, all in search of their own tomorrow. Where once much of the neighborhood stood as an example of urban decay, it is now an example of “urban-chic”. The hipsters and the yuppies (can we still use “yuppie” in the 21st Century?) abound. If you look carefully enough, you’ll be just as likely to see young moms carefully cradling their infants as college kids carefully cradling their vintage 1980 Canon A-1s (you know, the one from the Winter Olympic Games?). Of course, this is all you’ll see as long as you stay on the main drags.

Venture just a little bit east or west of Miami Avenue or Second Avenue and you’ll encounter another Wynwood, one where the locals still live. La Boricua Restaurant, La Perla Bar, Guanabacoa Market and many single family houses, duplexes and courtyard apartments reveal a Wynwood that is very urban but not at all “chic”. Not much has changed, here. The locals live and love much as they have for fifty years, each in search of their slice of America, each hoping for their own better tomorrow for themselves and their children.

So, what to make of Wynwood? Well, that leads us to the paradox. For all its recent strides, Wynwood still is an example of urban decay. Many structures are boarded up; many that aren’t are in very poor states of repair nonetheless. Fix it, clean it up, paint it, . . . gentrify it? Still, if we turn the urban decay into urban chic what will happen to the locals? What will happen to their Tomorrowland?

Club Space: Pinnacle of the Megaclub

I LOVE Club Space. I’ve been going there for years and was a weekly regular at one point. It’s an unruly beast, however, so to optimize your Club Space experience, consider the following.

It is one of the most longstanding clubs in Miami and one of the best known clubs in the world. Yeah, they kinda ripped the name off Space Ibiza, but it’s a minor offense so try to find it in your heart to forgive LP and his crew. You’ll be glad you did.

Your heart will flutter. Your mouth will salivate. You will begin to feel beads of sweat forming on your chest. Your body will pulsate with the bass, thumping through every fiber of your being. And you will have not even entered the club yet, because all that is just the anticipation you feel when crossing the threshold is imminent.

You will hear Alan T. before you see him, but you’ll know him when you do. Don’t even try to beg a favor if you don’t know him or aren’t dressed in the chicest of fashions. You may catch a glimpse of the entertainment for the night: gorgeous go-go dancers made up in costumes dreamt up by the craziest of minds.

As you get ready for your visit, consider the door policy. It is one reason why I love Space so much. The general idea is “come as you are.” Wanna wear a hat? Ok. Sporting your college tee? Sure. Prefer to wear sneakers? Damn right! You better wear shoes because this place gets nasty. No door drama here, because if your money (or your credit) is good, you’re welcome at Space. Yes, there can be a line, but it moves fast (WMC notwithstanding).

Don’t be an ass to the door staff. You don’t know them, so don’t call out to them, even if your cousin’s babysitter’s mother-in-law told you one of their names. They don’t care. Wait your turn, do as you are told, and you will be given your chance. Don’t complain about the entrance fee, because if you don’t want to pay it, there are hundreds of other people who will.

Know what to expect. This is a huge club with an extremely loud sound system and an exceptionally sophisticated lights and visuals show. It’s dark and there’s nowhere for you to sit unless you buy bottles. It’s a DANCE club, after all, so give that a shot. Bring cash, because you will be served more quickly and you really don’t want a bartender in a dark club holding on to your credit card (or worse, debit card) and ID anyway. Be nice to your bartender (and patient) and you will be served efficiently with strong drinks for a fair price.

Don’t bring anything dangerous, don’t start shit with the bouncers, don’t try to skip out on your bill, and don’t even THINK about bringing illegal substances into the club. They are strict at Space because they are nightlife pros, and if you’re just here to have a good time, that should make you feel more comfortable, not less.

Space brings top DJs from all over the world, so figure out who’s spinning at what time when you go. Go upstairs; the terrace is primo at sunrise, even as a solarium. The club has a 24-hour liquor license and will stay open as long as people are spending money.

Those who complain about the prices at Space should consider for a moment what one month’s FPL bill might look like at a warehouse that size. Or payroll taxes for the entire staff. Or, most of all, DJ fees for some of the biggest names in the world.

Bottom Line: Space is the pinnacle of the megaclub in this country. You simply must go, at least once. A visit to Space is, and was designed to be, an experience.

Tropical Symphony concert with Nationall Ballet of Colombia and Amadeus Youth Orchestra from Medellin 7/16/11

Saturday, July 16, 8 p.m.
Broward Center for the Performing Arts

Energizing Concert Breaks Boundaries between Classical and Tropical Music;
Media Invited to Attend Pre-Concert Ceremony Reaffirming first Sister Cities Relationship

The Broward Center for Performing Arts, a cultural partner in the Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment (A&E) District, will be buzzing with activity on Saturday, July 16 when the 50-year Sister City relationship between Fort Lauderdale and Medellin, Colombia will be commemorated with the Tropical Symphony concert in the Au-Rene Theater. Featuring dancers from the prestigious National Ballet of Colombia, this special event brings together Claudia Diez and her orchestra, TONO 40, and the renowned Amadeus Youth Orchestra from Medellin for an evening not to be missed. The Tropical Symphony Concert breaks the boundaries of classical and popular music and gives new meaning to the concept of a tropical orchestra. With an exciting fusion of music and folkloric dance, this special event promotes the rich cultural identity of Colombia.

Celebrated as one of the world’s premier dance companies, Ballet de Colombia, established by Sonia Osorio, has delivered its love for its country’s culture throughout the world for 50 years. The first folkloric ballet established in Colombia, Ballet deColombia is a celebration between dance and music, and marries the rituals of the country’s folkloric history with the athleticism and majesty of its dancers. These elements are combined with colorful costumes and vibrant music to create an electrifying performance.

Established in 1998 as a music school that reached out to children from the underprivileged neighborhoods of Medellin, the Amadeus Youth Orchestra’s talented ensemble has traveled throughout Latin America, the U.S. and Europe, performing before noted dignitaries including Pope John Paul II. The first youth symphonic orchestra in Colombia, the Amadeus Youth Orchestra encourages its performers, ages 10-17, to nurture a love and appreciation for music through learning and exploration. This will be their first appearance in South Florida.

Tickets for the Tropical Symphony concert range from $30-$100 and are available through the Broward Center for the Performing Arts Box Office or online at www.browardcenter.org. The concert begins at 8 p.m. and takes place in the Au-Rene Theater.

The concert is presented by Claudia Diez with support from Nova Southeastern University, Ana G. Mendez University, and Coordi Util along with many throughout the Colombian community.

“We are delighted that the Tropical Symphony concert will take place at the Broward Center for Performing Arts during the city of Fort Lauderdale’s Centennial year,” said Carmen Ackerman, project manager for Riverwalk A&E District. “The Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District supports and promotes the international cultural ties between Fort Lauderdale and cities around the globe, and we’re honored that the Broward Center was selected as the venue for this exciting event.”

Prior to the concert, members of the media are invited to attend the 6:00 pm signing ceremony where a reaffirmation of the commitment between these two Sister Cities will take place. The ceremony will be attended by local government officials, business, community leaders, and international delegates from Medellin, Colombia at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in the Abdo New River Room. The agreement symbolizes the continuing friendship between the two cities, as well as the commitment to strengthen cultural, educational and economic ties between the State of Florida and the region of Antioquia in Colombia, of which the capital is Medellin. Sister Cities International is a Citizens Diplomacy network with a strong presence across the U.S. The Greater Fort Lauderdale Sister Cities International has made greatefforts to foster partnerships with 17 cities throughout the world. The partnership with the City of Medellin is the first Sister City relationship established by the City of Fort Lauderdale

The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County presents the critically-acclaimed international sensation Cirque Éloize iD.

Hip-hop, graffiti and mind-blowing acrobatics make for an urban spectacle to sizzle
in Miami this summer!

Now celebrating its Fifth Anniversary Season, the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County proudly announces its 2011 summer blockbuster – CIRQUE ÉLOIZE iD – a spectacular, mind-blowing fusion of new theatrical circus and urban dance created by the great contemporary cirque director JEANNOT PAINCHAUD. CIRQUE ÉLOIZE iD opens on July 26 and recently extended its stay to September 4 due to great demand.

CIRQUE ÉLOIZE iD is the seventh original production from CIRQUE ÉLOIZE. CIRQUE ÉLOIZE and Cirque du Soleil have engaged in a long-term relationship based on common creative visions and international entertainment appeal.
Through large-scale projections evocative of the streets of Calle Ocho, the Port of Miami and the graffiti walls of the Wynwood design district, audiences at CIRQUE ÉLOIZE iD will be immediately immersed in a metropolis very much like Miami— a city perpetually transforming itself in the process of finding a new identity. The stage of the Ziff Ballet Opera House will come alive with the boundless energy of acrobats, break dancers, contortionists and a fearless stunt biker who perform against a kaleidoscope of eye-popping video drawn from science-fiction films, comic books and graffiti.

An exciting, moving, and unforgettable modern circus blending the daring soundtrack of rock, hip-hop, and electronica with the romantic heart of West Side Story, iD showcases the unique talents of a troupe of over 16 international artists—masters of hand-to-hand acrobatics, contortion, in-line skating, hip-hop, modern dance, break dance, and Cyr wheel all leading up to a stunning finale on the one-of-a-kind video trampowall. Click here to watch a video.
“Cirque Éloize iD explores the concept of identity and how people from different backgrounds get along in a clan,” explains Painchaud. “Each artist represents a unique character that highlights the human spirit and the diversity of the human condition. “

As each distinct personality begins to emerge, the setting of iD is transformed into a place where—like Miami itself—diversity is nurtured, friendships are forged, love is created and identity is embraced.

TICKETS
Tickets to CIRQUE ÉLOIZE iD go on sale to members on April 12 and to the general public on May 19. Tickets start at $25 and may be purchased through the Adrienne Arsht Center box office by calling (305) 949-6722, or online at www.arshtcenter.org.*

Hailed by the Montreal Gazette as “a thrilling piece of work, full of attitude, energy and invention,” iD was created by Jeannot Painchaud, founder and artistic director of Montreal’s acclaimed CIRQUE ÉLOIZE, and has sold out in Montreal and Toronto. The high-energy all-musical spectacle (there’s no spoken word), features an original electronic score composed by Jean-Phi Goncalves (from the indie band Beast) and Alex McMahon, which features a Spanish-language hip-hop number among other electropop, dance, and vocal tracks. The creative team also features hip-hop choreographer Mourad Merzouki and costumes by Linda Brunelle.

iD is the seventh original production from CIRQUE ÉLOIZE. Since it began in 1993, Cirque Éloize has become a world leader in contemporary circus arts, with almost 4,000 performances in more than 400 cities around the globe to its credit. The award-winning company has enjoyed rave reviews and sold-out engagements at the world’s most prestigious festivals and theatres including Edinburgh International Festival, the Hollywood Bowl, Théâtre du Rond-Point des Champs-Élysées, Sadler’s Wells and the Barbican Theatre.
