The Lunch Box Gallery is pleased to announce its last month of the show “Corrosion” by acclaimed Venezuelan photographer Rodolfo Vanmarcke on August 13, 2011 at 310 NW. 24th St. Miami, FL 33127.

Corrosion is a photographic series by artist Rodolfo Vanmarcke, that was born in 2008 to reference the strength of contrast, the passion for the opposites and the imposition of an aesthetic over another one in order to create a canvas full of almost tactile textures, which
allow to read between the lines an image that it was, but that will never be again its original beauty. According to Vanmarcke, the art pieces reject any visual fidelity in the viewer to
new shapes that go beyond traditional photography, and incorporate themselves into new mixed techniques of visual expression.

The exhibition explores the politics surrounding the treatment of animals, and his subjects are some of Miami’s most famous faces, including Brooke Hogan, Ines Rivero, Katrina Campins, Tracy Mourning, Michelle Pooch and Tara Solomon, to name a few. Each woman is captured as an artistic nude as part of PETA’s “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” campaign. Eighty percent of the proceeds from all sales of these photographic works will be donated to PETA. This powerful, sensual exhibition will be on display from Aug. 12 through Sept. 10.

About Jordan Michael Zuniga:
Growing up with wooden cameras as toys, and with a mother who is an artist and a father who has been a working photographer for more than 40 years, it is no surprise that Jordan today lives in Miami and is surrounded by beauty and creativity.

At age 19 with $700 in cash and a backpack full of ambition, Jordan jumped on a UK-bound plane with the intention of living in Europe, seeing the world and finding out where photography could take him. In Amsterdam, he quickly made friends with a local photographer who showed him what fashion photography looked like. Within a few months he was hooked. He soon began knocking on modeling agency doors and was eventually hired as a test photographer, and the rest is history.

Jordan has worked with many professional entities in the U.S. and abroad, including Fashion TV, Elite Model Management, Next, Ford Models, Front Management, MC2 Model Management, True Religion, ADT, the U.S. Navy, SiTV, Mercedes-Benz, Victoria’s Secret, Warner Bros., Selecta Magazine, Venue Magazine and Casa Casuarina.

Most days he can be found at his highly successful Red 1 Studios working with an array of clients. Jordan recently expanded his brand and scope of work to include philanthropic enterprises. Along those lines, he is currently involved with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, Miami Heart Gallery, Haitian American Tree Trust and Cameras for Kids, among others.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is the largest animal rights organization in the world, with more than 2 million members and supporters. PETA focuses its attention on the four areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time: on factory farms, in laboratories, in the clothing trade, and in the entertainment industry. The organization also works on a variety of other issues, including the cruel killing of beavers, birds and other “pests,” as well as abuse of domesticated animals. PETA works through public education, cruelty investigations, research, animal rescue, legislation, special events, celebrity involvement and protest campaigns.

KCC Productions and the Van Dyke Cafe present LeNard Rutledge 8/11/11

KCC Productions and the Van Dyke Cafe present LeNard Rutledge
Thursday, August 11, at 9 PM
The Van Dyke
846 Lincoln Road
South Beach
For more information, call 305-534-3600 or visit thevandykecafe.com.

Captivating, soul stirring, earthy and funky. These are just some of the words used to describe the song stylings of LeNard Rutledge. Growing up in Miami, Florida, LeNard was always surrounded by many different musical styles. His parents had an extensive music collection ranging from Classical, Jazz, Hymns and the funk of James Brown.

In the fall of 1984, LeNard went to St. Augustine’s College in Raleigh, NC. LeNard was awarded a Band Scholarship by Dr. Harold Jeffries (Director of Bands). It was in Raleigh when LeNard’s musical journey took flight. In the fall of 1984, he recorded two jingles for WLLE, a local AM radio station. He played drums, co-wrote and sang background vocals. He played timpani and general percussion in the Concert band and was the back–up drummer for the Jazz Ensemble. After a year of hinting and periodic begging, LeNard got his first big break. In the fall of 1986, LeNard sang the ballad “Teach Me Tonight” at the Annual Spring Concert. His confidence grew as he sang more songs, which led to other projects such as studio work and voice-over jobs. For fear of letting his drumming chops falter, LeNard played at area clubs to keep the rust away. A musical friend (Rick Best) introduced him to song writing.

In 1992, Stanley Baird, an area saxophonist, asked LeNard to submit songs for his upcoming CD, Stop, Look & Listen. Stan recorded three of his songs and released them on his label, Saxony Records. In 1995, LeNard submitted two of those songs to the Billboard Songwriting Contest. One of the songs, “So In Love (with you)” placed in the top 1% of 50,000 R&B entries. In the fall of 1995, he returned for a while to Miami. Needing extra cash to return to school, a childhood friend, Alan Morley told him he could earn extra money producing Rap and Hip-Hop Music. He introduced him to Gary Bradshaw (a Miami Rapper). From October 1995 to January 1996, LeNard “ghost wrote” and produced 9 original tracks for Gary. After returning to school in January of 1996, LeNard made the Dean’s List and Graduated in May 1997 with a B.S. Degree in Industrial Hygiene and Safety.

In May 1997, LeNard moved back to Miami. In October 1997, LeNard auditioned as a vocalist for the Melton Mustafa Orchestra. He got the gig and was the featured vocalist until 2003. LeNard has been a featured vocalist at area jazz spots in South Florida. The Museum of Contemporary Art, the Van Dyke Café and O’Hara’s Jazz Pub are the most notable. LeNard has shared the stage with a number of highly respectable jazz artists such as: Nnenna Freelon, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Kenny Drew Jr., and Harry Allen. In May of 2006, LeNard was named BEST JAZZ ARTIST, by the Miami New Times magazine. His first CD, Hello World, was released in November.

Introducing the revolutionary concept of LIVE performances in combination with the visual arts! A new concept introduced by Adam White, gallery owner and Wendy White, playwright and founder of the New Light Theatre. (no relation). Following the successful launch of “The Jewish Nun” at the New Light Theatre at Gallery 101 – Wendy White is proud to present new plays representing all kinds of love!

The freedom to love is the theme of this production featuring new one-act plays written by Wendy White, Playwright and Co-Founder of the New Light Foundation, Inc. (http://www.newlightgallery.org/) and Vanessa Garcia, Artistic Director of The Krane, Inc. (http://thekrane.com/)

THE PROPOSAL by Vanessa Garcia
A young couple together for about 7 years are about to make one of the biggest decisions in their lives. The entire short revolves around their decision making process revealing their relationship, their issues, their love.

MARRY ME! by Wendy White
A one act play capturing the day – June 24, 2011 – when lawmakers in New York voted to legalize same-sex marriage, making New York the largest state where gay and lesbian couples will be able to wed. As a result, the passing of the “marriage bill” may double the amount of married couples in our country.

I WANT TO BE YOUR SCULPTURE by Wendy White
A one-act comedy portraying the challenge of love, art, marriage and sculpture.

Monologues and poetry will also be featured for a rapturous evening celebrating the freedom of love!

Adam White went to see one of Wendy’s plays recently in Miami at Wynwood’s GAB studio and decided to offer Wendy a permanent home in his Fort Lauderdale gallery surrounded by cafes, restaurants, boutiques and other galleries. “Wendy and New Light Theatre will be able to cast plays every month and have a solid home base from which to create. We are very excited to have her here; she is an immense talent that promises to get even bigger and better with this wonderful association” states Adam White, Gallery owner, Gallery 101.

“Jump into Love is all about Love! The freedom to love, to live, to be who you are;” states playwright, Wendy White. “Jump into Love celebrates new breakthroughs in our nation where men and women of all lifestyles finally have equal rights under the law. It is truly an honor to showcase “Jump Into Love” as the newest production at the New Light Theatre’s new venue at Gallery 101. Special thanks to Adam White, gallery owner and fine artist for opening his doors to us!”

“We Jump into love every day, every hour, every minute; sometimes we are aware, sometimes we’re not. Sometimes it’s the most wonderful thing in the world, sometimes the scariest and riskiest. Why not celebrate all of it — the leap into the arms of someone we love, the sting that sometimes comes as a result of a heart open to love. Over and over again. Jump Into Love is an homage to all of it,” says Vanessa Garcia, playwright and founding artistic director of Krane, Inc.

Krane, Inc. was named Best of the City 2010 by Miami Magazine, as the best up and coming theatre company in town. http://vanessagarcia.org/press/tethrical-chairs.php. Also in 2010, Vanessa Garcia, the Founding Artistic Director of Krane, Inc. was named one of Miami’s 20 Under 40 by The Miami Herald for her work in theatre. For more information about Garcia, please visit: www.vanessagarcia.org

As for the companies themselves — Krane, Inc. and New Light Foundation, Inc. have produced performances all over the world from Amsterdam to Edinburgh; New York City to Miami. This is their first performance together at the New Light Theatre’s new venue at Gallery 101.

The playwright and director, Wendy White has written over 120 one-act plays and was a resident playwright, curator and director at the Kraine Theater in the East Village of New York City from 1984 to 1992, and at the Expanded Arts Theater Company from 1994 to 2001, in the Lower East Side of New York City. Her off-Broadway productions are the base for her new venue at the New Light Theatre. She recently produced The Jewish Nun to sold out audiences at the New Light Theatre at Gallery 101, in Off-Broadway’s 59e59 Street Theatre and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland.

In 2009, New Light Foundation, Inc. represented the United States as Art ambassadors by the 1-2-3 Kinderlachen e.V. foundation of Rottenburg, Germany by hosting the international “Global Gallery” project (www.123kinderlachen.org). During the course of this important project, the “world’s biggest canvas” emerged; painted by children – transcending all borders and conflicts.

The New Light Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit public foundation, has won numerous awards around the globe, has performed everywhere from Amsterdam to Paris; from Miami to Los Angeles to New York City; and has tackled subjects relating to women, love, politics, and Shakespeare. More information about the writer and director, Wendy White can be found on her website: www.newlightgallery.org. Please visit: http://www.newlightgallery.org/paintingswendy/theater-resume.html

If you’re gonna pull a knife, USAlo
September 8th, 9th & 10th at 8:00 p.m.
September 11 at 5:00 p.m.
On.Stage Black.Box Theater at Miami Dade County Auditorium
2901 W Flagler Street
Miami

Conceived by Carlos Caballero and Elizabeth Doud, Directed by Carlos Diaz (Teatro El Publico)

Tickets $20 Click here and Buy Now

If you’re gonna pull a knife, USAlo urges action around the apparently gloomy themes of petroleum pollution, hopelessness and absurd sea life in search of something upbeat to cling to: a magic solvent that will clean the ocean, the prospect of the perfect job that pays you to do what you love to do, or a piece of floating plastic garbage large enough to float on without drowning. This evening length work, Directed by Havana-based Carlos Diaz of Teatro El Publico, is about the petroleum industry, unemployment and mermaids and impossible love.

Using the rearranged texts of playwright Samuel Beckett as a foundation to piece together dramatic exchanges between an unemployed oil platform worker and an out of work Seaworld character actress, their alter-egos, (a real mermaid and petroleum itself), are drawn to, and react against one another as they make small talk around the woes of being jobless and watching the planet deteriorate in a sea of plastic and toxic pollution around them. The text is presented completely in both English and Spanish.

Espirito Santo Bank Presents Maria Bethania in Concert 11/11/11

Espirito Santo Bank presents Maria Bethania in concert
Friday November 11th, 8PM
Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater

Tickets on sale August 5th at 10AM through Ticketmaster outlets or the Fillmore box office.
$100 – $80 – $60 – $40

Exclusive US concert date – first appearance in Florida since 1988!

“With her low, throaty voice, Miss Bethania caresses her ballads, letting the melodies stretch out, warm and languorous. She sings love songs with breathy intimacy; other ballads pour out phrase by tender phrase as if she were thinking them up on the spot. For all the rich melancholy of her ballads, Miss Bethania can also breeze through uptempo songs, riding the propulsive rhythms of her home state, Bahia, and tossing off lyrics in easy syncopations.” — The New York Times

Singer and icon, Maria Bethânia became a major star in Brazil as one of the founders of tropicalia in the late 1960s. Along with her brother, Caetano Veloso, and musical partners Gilberto Gil and Gal Costa, the four young musicians created a cultural wave still rolling today. Shirking the repression of Brazil’s military dictatorship, Bethania and company married the electricity of the psychedelic era and youth culture with the traditional beauty of Brazilian music and culture. She quickly earned her nickname “abelha rainha” (queen bee) of MPB (Brazilian Popular Music). In five decades, Maria Bethania has released more that 30 albums, having shared the spotlight with legends like Edu Lobo, Chico Buarque and her colleagues from Bahia, Gil, Gal and brother Caetano. Since the very beginning of her career, her work is synonymous with professionalism, integrity and a deep respect for the craft of songwriters, poets and musicians.

L’elisir d’amore, an Italian comic opera, by Gaetano Donizetti. Premiered in Milan in 1832, it was immediately a tremendous success. Its amusing and witty plot describing relationships of a loving couple and beautiful, melodious and light music make L’elisir d’amore one of the most frequently performed 19th-century Italian operas.

The libretto of the opera, written after the French playwright Eugene Scribe’s comedy, is based on the legend about the magic love potion, taken from Gottfried von Strassburg’s courtly romance Tristan. The unexpected, mock interpretation of the medieval legend gives it a new meaning: people are capable of filling each other with the elixir of love and kindness without any magic potion.

The feelings experienced by the opera’s characters – love, coquetry, rivalry, jealousy – are everlasting as life. So, the story of L’elisir d’amore could be set at a Venetian carnival several centuries ago, just as well as in a present-day town. Adina a rich villager and Nemorino a less fortunate peasant together with Dr. Dulcamara and the Sergeant Belcore are the protagonist of this beautiful opera that includes the famous tenor’s aria “Una furtive lagrima.”

This year’s event theme is the challenge and benefit of fighting Childhood Obesity.

Over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled. Today, almost one in every three children in our nation is overweight or obese. The numbers are even higher in African American and Hispanic communities, where nearly 40% of the children are overweight or obese. If we don’t solve this problem, one third of all children born in 2000 or later will suffer from diabetes at some point in their lives. Many others will face chronic obesity-related health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and asthma.

The Opening Of the New Collection Rubbish
by french artist Claude Charlier

www.markowiczfineart.com
To RSVP, email info@markowiczfineart.com

Claude knew that art was his path in life. Initially he fell in love with the magic of photography, although he studied both music and fine art. His first job was working as a photographer for the French government. Soon after he landed a spread and a call to come to Paris from “Paris Match” magazine. In Paris he continued with photography, working between Paris and London, but also collaborated with Shuji Terayama, writer and director of the Tenjo Sajiki and with Suzuki Tadashi director of the Waseda Shogekijo. With them he co-wrote and directed ‘’Laurence de Paris’’, and fell in love with the Japanese culture. Shortly after he decided to move to Tokyo , Japan. The move was pivotal.

While growing his photography career Claude also worked as an art director for four years in Tokyo, creating international campaigns for major Japanese companies. Even once his client list grew to include an impressive list of the world’s major corporations and publications and awards began to roll in, he still pursued other artistic interests. He did a couple of TV shows for Japanese networks and helped create and launch magazines such as Tokyo Journal, Vu and G magazine. His work lead him to travel all over the world for many years, and it was there that he literally ran across his idea for a series of paintings: a crushed soda can. His current series of paintings: “Rubbish” , grew from this moment.

In Miami, Claude is currently showing his artwork at the Markowicz Fine Art Gallery in Miami.

For nine months during the day and night, Meyerowitz photographed “the pile,” as the World Trade Center came to be known, and the over 800 people a day that were working in it. The exhibition consists of 24 photographs, recently donated to the Museum and presented in the Focus Gallery section of the Museum’s Permanent Collection installation. The exhibition will be on view August 19, 2011 – November 6, 2011.

MAM hosts a special exhibition preview on Thursday, August 18, 4-7pm, for police, firefighters and emergency workers. The preview is free and open to the public.

An exhibition of urban contemporary art. The exhibit will showcase the private SUSHISAMBA collection including the Eames Inspiration Collection and four works by Remed along with independent street artists Bask, Flip, Sesper, Smael and Tes One. The Pop Up blurs the line between the street and the gallery, presenting a multifaceted exhibition highlighting the freshest and most undeniable influences of urban aesthetics and contemporary design.

Eames Inspiration Collection
The Eames Inspiration collection is comprised of iconic Eames Molded Plywood Chairs as re-imagined by some of today’s most celebrated graffiti and street artists. Eames Inspiration was displayed this past May in Barneys’ famous windows in New York by Simon Doonan and auctioned online to benefit Operation Design – a creative mentorship program that organizes architects, artists and related talents to work with New York City public school students to create motivating and inspiring projects. The majority of the collection was purchased at a public auction by SUSHISAMBA and GGG and gave the public an opportunity to view it in its entirety for the first time since last spring, during Art Basel Miami Beach.

90 Miles: Living In The Vortex 8/13/11

90 Miles: Living In The Vortex
Saturday, August 13, 6pm-10pm
DotFiftyOne Gallery 51 NW 36 Ave Miami, Florida 33127
51 NW 36 Ave Miami, Florida 33127
www.dotfiftyone.com

Dot Fiftyone is pleased to present, 90 Miles: Living In The Vortex, a solo show by Havana-based artist, Sandra Ramos, one of the most renowned Cuban Contemporary artists. This will be the first solo exhibition for the artist with Dot Fiftyone and the second solo show presentation in our city, the first being in 2003.

The show takes its name from the core artwork in the exhibition 90 Miles1. It consists of a 32-foot poetic installation that works as a symbolic bridge between Havana and Miami. The allegoric walkway is composed of twelve pictures of the Straits of Florida taken by the artist from an airplane during her trip from Havana to Miami in May 2011. The pieces are displayed in light boxes, which the public can walk on, representing the possibility of overcoming more than half a century of separation, anguish and differences in the Cuban recent history.
Focused on the sea as a connecting curatorial thread, the show features two series: “Sea of Sorrows” (2004), and “Secret Fears” (2011). These beautifully crafted series deal with the unique reverie-like atmosphere that typifies Sandra Ramos’ autobiographical universe in which impossibility, solitude and chimera are essential elements.
The exhibition includes three animation videos addressing the obsession of escape at any cost.
The show is curated by Miami-based art critic and curator Janet Batet, who explains: “The passage on the bridge is a quasi-mystical experience. Under our feet, we can feel the weight of that sort of Styx, that is the Straits of Florida to the Cuban identity, while -as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz- we realize that we are finally ready to come back Home.”

About the Artist
Sandra Ramos is one of the most renowned Cuban Contemporary leading artists. Her autobiographical groundbreaking universe deals with the pressing issue of the Cuban Diaspora and split identity.

Born in Havana in October 1969, she studied Fine Arts at the Higher Institute of Arts of Cuba. Her work is in public and private collections among them: The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; MOMA The Museum of Modern Art, New York; National Museum of Fine Arts, Havana; Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art, Florida; MAM Miami Art Museum, Miami; Ludwig Forum fur Kunst, Aachen; Fuchu Art Museum in Tokyo and Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary, Vienna.

Following the opening reception, gallery hours will be Monday-Friday, 12 P.M. to 7 P.M. On Saturdays private viewings will be available by appointment

Further information regarding the exhibitions is available by calling (305) 573-9994, via e-mail dot@dotfiftyone.com or jbatet@hotmail.com and online at www.dotfiftyone.com.

Summer Time Blues at Fredric Snitzer Gallery 8/13/11

Second Saturday Opening: Saturday August 13, 2011 7:30-9:30pm
Fredric Snitzer Gallery
2247 NW 1st Place
Miami, FL 33127
August 3 – September 5, 2011

In the words of Eddie Cochran and Jerry Capehart, “Ain’t no cure for the summertime blues.” So, why not embrace them?

With the persistent blazing heat and the relentless threat of hurricanes looming in our blue skies, Miami summers can be all too monotonous. As summer comes to a close here, there is no escaping the dive back into reality. At times every individual experiences the blues however, when overcome one can acquire newly found freedom. Blue, the overwhelming color of choice by both males and females is considered a constant in our lives. It can be both calming and dependable while conversely referencing sadness and melancholy undertones. Both the musical Blues and Picasso’s blue period were produced through inspiration brought on by hardships. The August group show at Fredric Snitzer Gallery has them swimming through the Summer Time Blues, before the wave of action rolls through Miami this fall.

The Summer Time Blues exhibition will feature works by: Alice Aycock, Zack Balber, Loriel Beltran, Timothy Buwalda, Sean Dack, Jacin Giordano, Luis Gispert, Gavin Perry, Bert Rodriguez, Diego Singh, and Michael Vasquez; each working with the color blue in their own distinct and intuitive way. The body of work within this show connect through a variety of themes directly dealing with the color blue, best expressed through nature, beauty, and energy.

Composer, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Big Poppa E is a prominent and influential figure in the late 20th century blues and roots music. Though his career began more than four decades ago with American jazz, he has broadened his artistic scope over the years to include music representing many varied genres. Born Mutasim Ra’id Faisal in New York in 1948, his father was a jazz pianist, composer and arranger of Caribbean descent, and his mother was a gospel singing schoolteacher from Louisiana. Early in his childhood, the young musician learned to play the tenor and alto sax, trombone and harmonica, and he loved to sing. He discovered his father’s guitar and became serious about it in his early teens when a guitarist from Mississippi moved in next door and taught him the various styles of Muddy Waters, Lightnin’ Hopkins, John Lee Hooker and Jimmy Reed and other titans of Delta and Chicago blues.

Musi, as he was affectionately called, studied economics at Syracuse University in the late 1960s and later law at the University of Chicago. Inspired by a dream, he adopted the musical alias of E and later was crowned “Big Poppa E” by one of Miami’s top promoters, DJ Oski. After graduating, he headed west in to Los Angeles, where he worked as a studio musician for the next 15 years. Around this same time, Poppa E also mingled with various blues legends, including Koko Taylor, Muddy Waters, Junior Wells, and Sleepy John Estes. This diversity of musical experience served as the bedrock for Poppa E’s first three recordings: Southern Style: Blues Sessions (2006), Mississippi Reminiscence (2007) and Five Long Years, A Tribute to Carey Bell (2008). Drawing on all the sounds and styles he’d absorbed as a child and a young adult, these early albums showed signs of the musical exploration that would be Poppa E’s hallmark over the next few years.
In 2008, Poppa E carved out a unique musical niche with a string of adventurous recordings, including “Blues A Healer”, “Crossroads” and “Anthology du Blues”.

In 2008, Poppa E’s version of “Terraplane Blues” was nominated by the International Academy of Independent Artist for Best Blues Song of the Year and his album, “Blues A Healer” was nominated for Best Blues Album of the Year by Cash Box Magazine. Poppa E’s recorded output slowed somewhat during 2010 as he toured relentlessly and immersed himself in the music and culture of his new home in Miami. Still, 2010 saw the well-received release of “Big Poppa E Live” in 2010, as well as his celebrated children’s album, “Children’s Classics” on the Black Owl Music label.

Poppa E is headed back into the studio in early 2011 to work on a new projected aptly entitled, “Bootleggers Blues”. As the title suggests, this twelve-track set marks the fortieth anniversary of Poppa E’s rich and varied recording career by mixing original material, chestnuts borrowed from classic sources, and songs written by a cadre of highly talented guest artists from around the globe. “The one thing I’ve always demanded of the records I’ve made is that they be listenable and danceable,” he says. “If the record is danceable, it’s listenable, it has lots of different rhythms, it’s accessible, it’s all right in front of you. It’s a lot of fun, and it represents where I am at this particular moment in my life. This record is just the beginning of another chapter, one that’s going to be open to more music and more ideas. Even at the end of forty years, in many ways my music is just getting started.”

Variable Discourse – Absenteeism A Conversation Between Claire Breukel And Magnus Sigurdarson 8/3/11

Variable Discourse – Absenteeism A Conversation Between Claire Breukel And Magnus Sigurdarson
Dimensions Variable
Wednesday, August 3, 2011 At 6:00 Pm
171 NE 38th Street
Design District
Miami, Florida 33137
dimensionsvariable.net

Please join us for a conversation between Claire Breukel and Magnus Sigurdarson at Dimensions Variable. They will be discussing some of the ideas behind Sigurdarson’s Absenteesim currently on view at DV, as well as the artist’s practice.

Absenteeism is a habitual pattern of absence from a duty or obligation. Traditionally, it has been viewed as an indicator of poor individual performance, as well as a breach of an implicit contract between employee and employer; it was seen as a management problem, and framed in economic or quasi-economic terms. More recent scholarship seeks to understand absenteeism as an indicator of psychological, medical, or social adjustment to work.

In his exhibition, Sigurdarson is approaching the exhibition space as a blank entity; furthermore, he is framing the space, covering it with structures that are regarded as support for the very basis of art expression. He has collected the frames over a long time and they have been waiting to be given a purpose. Some are reclaimed, found or made by hand, but they will all be altered to fit the dimensions of the room.

He is allowing his practice to be determined by the demands of the space and shifting his attention to the structures that support “the work.” By doing so, he’s making a choice to explore the disconnect between his work and the self that exists independent of the work. This process has brought him to the realization that the absence of his work is the work, thus embracing the idea of absenteeism as a new state of working.

Magnus Sigurdarson was born in Reykjavik, Iceland, in 1966 and currently livesand works in Miami, Florida. He attended The Icelandic College of Arts and Crafts, Reykjavik, Iceland (1992, BFA in Mixed Media) and Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey (1997, MFA). He is a Fulbright Scholarship Recipient with multiple grants and awards on his Resume. His work are included in the collections of Debra and Dennis Scholl, Miami Beach; Alberto Chebebar, Miami Beach; Collezione La Gaia, Busca, Italy, MDD – Museum Dhondt – Dhaenes, Gent, Belgium; The Icelandic National Gallery, Reykjavik; The Reykjavik Municipal Museum, Reykjavik; The Related Group, Miami and The Private Collection of Emmanuel Javogue, Miami. Magnus Sigurdarson is represented by the Dorsch Gallery, Miami.

Claire Breukel is an independent curator and arts writer interested in contemporary art that falls outside of conventional modes of exhibition. Her previous work experience includes working as Curator for Sportlifestyle company PUMA as well as Director of Locust Projects. She is currently a Creative consultant for the Miami DDA and lives and works between Miami and NY where she will be attending Hunter college this fall.

The Betsy-South Beach Career Retrospective by Photographer Robert Zuckerman The Betsy Opening 8/14/11

The Betsy-South Beach Career Retrospective by Photographer Robert Zuckerman
The Betsy Opening Reception
August 14, 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm
1440 Ocean Drive
Miami Beach, FL 33139
www.thebetsyhotel.com

Miami hotel debuts major exhibition as part of ongoing commitment to arts, culture, and philanthropy

A commitment to arts and culture continues at The Betsy-South Beach, as the hotel debuts its next exhibition featuring a career retrospective of photographs by Robert Zuckerman. Zuckerman is highly recognized for his work in the motion picture industry, with his emotionally rich work depicting actors both on and off the set. Highlights in his ‘Portraits’ collection include faces of well-known actors such as Javier Bardem and Morgan Freeman, and also feature images of iconic poets Alan Ginsberg and Maya Angelou, among many others. Two other collections, Kindsight and Time Machine will also be displayed.

The exhibition opens on August 14, with a reception held from 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm. Zuckerman will be in attendance at the opening, which will be hosted by Rachael Taylor and Ramon Rodriguez, stars of the new Charlie’s Angels television series, currently in production in Miami.

The drama of cinematic settings is tightly framed as Zuckerman focuses on the personal expression of actors and subjects in their element. Zuckerman’s inspiration is to convey emotion. Al Pacino in a driver’s seat of a convertible with cigar taken in Miami in 1999, reveals a recognized persona, and an unmistakable silhouette with little detail. Some reveal a more enigmatic side such as Morgan Freeman shown in deep thought. Other celebrities photographed and on exhibit include Rosanna Arquette in New York City, 1990, and Gena Rowlands on scene in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1995.

Also on display at The Betsy is a selection from Robert Zuckerman’s series Time Machine. Zuckerman revisits photos from the past, taking a personal and nostalgic journey, as they conjure up memories of a certain place and time. Scanned and reprinted after being vaulted for decades, Zuckerman invites viewers to join him as he reconnects with an earlier time in his life. From black and white billboards photographed in 1977 to capturing typography on signs evident of a specific moment in time, the artist exploits isolated objects and their photos of the past as relics; with neon sign and trucker’s lunch as icon, he redefines the term ‘object d’arte’. The ‘Kindsight’ collection, here showing 25 of some 500 pieces done over the past decade, invites viewers to find beauty in every day faces and to find wisdom in poetic recollections of a first meeting. Kindsight, the coffee-table book, is available for purchase at the exhibition.

Betsy Exhibitions are made available as a component of the Hotel’s Philanthropy, Arts, and Culture Program, with viewings free and open to the public. All works are for sale, and a portion of proceeds of Zuckerman’s work will be donated to Zara’s Center, an organization dedicated to providing support for AIDS impacted children in Zimbabwe and The Foundation for New Education Initiatives, Inc supporting Miami-Dade County schools.

The kitschy and recognizable aspect of the space starkly contrasts with the graphic content of the video presented. The warm atmosphere welcomes an entices the viewer, while the awry reality unfolding before him/her both mesmerizes and serves as a crude and shocking awakening to a reality ignored by many.

In August 2005, the American city of New Orleans was struck by the powerful Hurricane Katrina. Although the storm was damaging by itself, that was not the true disaster. That happened when the city’s flooding safeguards like levees failed and put most of the city, which is largely below sea level, underwater. This film covers that disastrous series of events that devastated the city and its people. Furthermore, the gross incompetence of the various governments and the powerful from the local to the federal level is examined to show how the poor and underprivileged of New Orleans were mistreated in this grand calamity and still ignored today. (Documentary)

In 2006, director Spike Lee created an astonishing record of the cataclysmic effects of Hurricane Katrina on the city of New Orleans with his epic award-winning documentary, When the Levees Broke. Five years later, Lee returns to New Orleans, to see how the ambitious plans to reinvent the Crescent City were playing out. He finds a patchwork of hope and heartache just as a new disaster unfolds. The four-hour documentary is a continuation of the heart- rending story of destruction and rebirth of America’s most unique city. (Documentary)

In 1997, Academy Award winning actor, Morgan Freeman, who lives in the Charleston, Mississippi community, offered to fund the first-ever integrated Senior Prom in the history of Charleston’s one high school. His offer was ignored. In 2008, Morgan offered again… the East Tallahatchie County School Board accepted. In this town of 2,300 people, its high school of 415 black and white students has, to this day, always had separate proms: one black, one white prom. Our film follows the Charleston High senior class of 2008 preparing and attending their historic, first integrated prom, in the context of strong emotions, traditions, and conflict inherent in race relations in the community, and in the deep south. Some of the white parents maintained their whites-only prom. (Documentary)

Servando Cabrera Moreno (1923-1981 Havana, Cuba) ranks among the most important names of Cuban painting of all times. Ten Erotic Works by Servando Cabrera Moreno is the selected title for this solo exhibition which pays tribute to this excellent artist and attests his painterly bravura. The installation features fine examples of the Servando’s seminal oeuvre – his erotic and homoerotic works, rendered with outstanding force and courage during the late 1960s and 1970s. It also provides a stimulating context for exploring the relationship of this subject matter and the difficult realities of the artist’s personal life.

A person of keen intellect and sensibility, Servando was an outstanding draftsman and painter with a brilliant sense of color and composition – an accomplished artist in every sense of the word. He was passionate about art and developed throughout his career a highly personal style.

The works featured in the show depict erotic images of male and female nudes. Recurrently, the painter often portrays the figures without a face or a head. Anonymity not only prevails but is underscored as the artist places all emphasis on the body parts: human torsos, arms, limbs, thighs, sexual organs, – at times, distorted or augmented, at times, interlaced, fused or diffused. The compositions here presented – executed with splendid transparencies and a palette of harmonic hues – are both lyrical and highly carnal.

Visitors to the exhibition will have the opportunity to see the originality, force and mastery of works that reveal Servando as a virtuoso painter, including the powerful images of canvases such as: The Triumph (El Triunfo), 1971; What Was Here Invented (Lo Que Se Inventó Aquí), 1974; Armistice (Armisticio), 1970 and Pilate (Pilato), 1978.

Today, the artist is recognized as a one of Cuba’s great masters. A collection of his work and memorabilia is housed in the recently built Museo-Biblioteca Servando Cabrera Moreno in Havana.

Reading of A Barren Man
A play by Michelle Rosenfarb with Lela Elam, Howard Elfman, Abdiel Gabriel, Rachel Keller and Andrew Wind

Directed by Avi Hoffman

A Barren Man is the story of a young Orthodox man living in Crown Heights who is tormented by his sexual identity, repressed urges, and inability to procreate with his spouse of two years. Desperately longing to save his marriage and preserve his faith, the young man seeks counsel outside Crown Heights. Set against the backdrop of the highs and lows of New York’s same-sex marriage legislation, A Barren Man conveys the dangers of self entrapment, the lengths one must go for personal freedom, and the desire to become complete.

The playwright, a recipient of the Emerging Artist Foster Fellowship and winner of the 17th Annual Florida Playwright Competition, will be present at the reading. In addition to numerous staged readings of her work, her play, The Gates of Choice, received a world premiere production at New Theatre and was nominated for a Carbonell Award for Best New Work. She currently resides in NYC and is in her final year of studies at the MFA Dramatic Writing Program at NYU.

Don Boot talks about their music:
We have been singing good Ole’ gospel music and playing lively, camp-meeting style gospel piano as a husband and wife team since 1983.

I started playing keyboards with a traveling gospel quartet while in college as early as 1969. Some of my fondest memories are of climbing on that old “Blue Whale” (a converted school bus painted bright blue!) along with other members of the “Revelators” and heading on down the road. A short time later, I began singing in the quartet and I have been playing piano and singing with gospel quartets and trios ever since.

One day I heard a recording of a young woman singing and playing a guitar and I was immediately taken by what I heard. Her voice had a special rare quality that really made an impression on me. I had to meet the girl behind that voice. When I did, I found Jadene to be a beautiful person inside and out…to match her singing! We married in 1983 and have teamed up together in gospel music ever since.

2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Bass Museum of Art
2100 Collins Ave.
Miami Beach, FL 33139

The Bass Museum of Art, one of Miami Beach’s key cultural landmarks, will introduce family yoga this Sunday, July 31, as part of its monthly IDEA@thebass program. In support of First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” initiative, which focuses on fighting childhood obesity and putting children on the path to a healthy future, IDEA@thebass’s family yoga will offer an outlet to get kids moving with the support of their parents and community. Classes will be held at 2:15 p.m., 2:45 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. and will be tought by a kid-certified YOGI instructor; yoga-friendly clothing is encouraged.

IDEA@thebass is an interactive family event held at the museum on the last Sunday of every month from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The art-centered activities are designed to engage both children and parents in a fun and creative environment. Activities include “FUN in the Sun: Design Beach Toys,” and other summer-themed arts and crafts. Admission to the museum and activities are free of charge. The initiative is generously supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Located in Miami Beach, the Bass Museum of Art offers a dynamic year-round calendar of exhibitions presenting contemporary art, works of art from its permanent collection of Renaissance and Baroque paintings, sculpture and textiles and newly opened Egyptian Gallery. Artist’s projects, educational programs, lectures, concerts and free family days complement the works on view. Founded in 1963 when the City of Miami Beach accepted a collection of Renaissance and Baroque works of art from collectors John and Johanna Bass, the collection was housed in an Art Deco building designed in 1930 by Russell Pancoast. Architect Arata Isozaki designed an addition to the museum that doubled its size from 15,000 to 35,000 square feet between 1998 and 2002. Most recently, the museum selected internationally acclaimed Oppenheim Architecture + Design to lead its first phase of design and renovation tied to the 2010 completion of Miami Beach’s highly anticipated Collins Park. Oppenheim redesigned and relocated the museum’s arrival area to flow from and into the new park on Collins Avenue. For more information, please visit http://www.bassmuseum.org
