Mynt Lounge and Sow A Seed invite you to their Collaboration in Collectively Aiding Haiti 1/16/10

Mynt Lounge and Sow A Seed invite you to their Collaboration in Collectively Aiding Haiti As the desperation increases in Haiti during this tragic catastrophe and we are blessed to enjoy our weekend, let’s join forces in making a difference while we have a good time! Join us tomorrow Saturday, January 16th as we work side by side with Sow A Seed, to raise funds for the sole purpose of helping Haiti during this devastation. Sow A Seed is a non-profit organization created by a group of young professionals to provide the basic essentials for disadvantaged children living in extreme poverty in Haiti. In light of the recent tragedy they are converging all of their efforts towards earthquake relief.

All door proceeds (100%) will be donated to the victims of Haiti. As communities unite why should our industry be any different? Let’s give a little, while we dance a lot and rejoice knowing that a little goodness came from our celebration. This is just a minor step towards what we can do to make a difference, and since your loyalty has always made a difference to us we wouldn’t count on another audience for their support! Do not wait for leaders; do it alone, person to person. —Mother Teresa

SeminArt Art and Ideas Exhibit at the Public Library 1/27/10

Art and Ideas: Exhibiting at the Public Library

Public libraries were Miami’s original alternative exhibition spaces. Since the 1960s, local, national and international artists and curators have worked with the Miami-Dade Public Library System. Public libraries are well-used civic and community spaces. As the context for art and exhibitions, libraries can challenge artists to experiment and think about their work in new and different ways.

The Miami-Dade Public Library System accepts proposals for exhibitions, performance art and site-specific installations in all media. Its exhibition program includes contemporary art, material culture, folk art and art education (for example, exhibitions of student work organized by teachers or other educators), as well as exhibitions in the humanities about literary, historical, cultural, and interdisciplinary topics.

As Library Curator, Denise Delgado oversees the Art Services and Exhibitions Department at MDPLS, manages an exhibition program for the 48-branch system, develops public programs, acquires new work for the Library’s permanent art collection, and oversees its care and management. At this SeminArt, we’ll talk about the opportunities and resources available to artists through MDPLS, the upcoming Call for Proposals (deadline: March 10), the exhibition process, and more.

Denise will be available for specific questions at the end of the program. Stick around to meet other artists and community leaders—LegalArt SeminArts are great networking opportunities!

ON THE ROAD: ART DECO CELEBRATES THE MOTORCAR
One of the hallmarks of the 1930s was its passionate love affair with new technology, particularly the technology of transportation. On the sea, ocean liners like the Normandie promoted the elegance of fast transatlantic crossings, while on the rails, streamlined trains like the 20th Century Limited provided passengers with unrivaled luxury and speed. But it is on America’s roadways that a new passion became ubiquitous: the motorcar. Art Deco Weekend 2010 celebrates the technology, design, and American spirit embodied in the open road, as Americans got behind the wheel in record numbers, and manufacturers developed more and more streamlined models for mass consumption. Art Deco Weekend 2010 also celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Antique Automobile Club of America.

The weekend begins with a keynote lecture on Thursday, January 14th and culminates in a street festival January 15–17, 2010. Guests may attend musical, theatrical and dance performances, as well as participate in a number of guided tours, attend lectures and film screenings, and browse Ocean Drive lined with vendors of antiques and collectibles from the Art Deco and mid-twentieth century eras. There will be paintings, sculpture, jewelry and photography, along with a variety of food vendors to suit every taste.

PARKING: Ocean Drive (from 5th to 15th Streets) is closed for the street festival. Visitors should park in the City parking facilities at:
* 7th Street Garage: Between Washington & Collins on 7th Street.

Beyond Biba: A Portrait of Barbara Hulanicki
UK, Louis Price, 2009, 56 min

Barbara Hulanicki will always be remembered for BIBA, the shop that changed the face of UK fashion in the 1960’s and 70’s. A phenomenon in the truest sense of the word, BIBA has left an indelible mark on the history of British fashion. It was not only the place where celebrities like Mick Jagger, David Bowie, and Twiggy shopped but where arguably the most powerful figure in the world of fashion, infamous editor of Vogue Anna Wintour (the devil in The Devil Wears Prada) got her start.

Just as Barbara was a key ingredient in the cultural explosion that occurred in London in the 1960’s, she also found herself at the birth of the incredible regeneration of Miami Beach in the late 1980’s and 90’s. Barbara still resides in Miami Beach, and continues to work as one of the most respected interior designers in the United States.

Offering a rare insight into Barbara Hulanicki today by sharing her memories from the impossible glamour of BIBA to the murder of her father and taking us on an intimate tour of her home, her studio, and South Beach itself. We witness Barbara’s amazing sketches, gain entrance to a private exhibition of them attended by friends and fans like the Rolling Stones Ron Wood and super-models Kate Moss and Twiggy. Beyond Biba is an all access portrait of an overlooked and elusive artist who refused to merely give up and live in the shadow of the past.

Barbara Hulanicki will be present at the screening.

PRECEEDED BY:
Irene William: Queen of Lincoln Road
Dir. Eric Smith, US, 2005, 23mins

Over nine years, self-defined hag fag Eric Smith documented his friendship with an extraordinary elderly lady named Irene Williams. A public stenographer and eccentric fashion fixture on South Beach whose wild and colorful handmade outfits caught everyones eyes. This short film is a hilarious and loving tribute to a woman who was as bright and unique as the clothe she made for herself.

To all of my wonderful friends, I am very honored to be a part of an event that is so close to my heart……

Please join me, Christiana Van Ryn, this Friday, Jan. 8th, 2010 at the Miami Beach Botanical Gardens Banyan Room, 2000 Convention Center Drive Miami Beach, 7-10 PM

A reception of hors d’œuvres by chef Stefano LaCava and beverages will follow the talk, accompanied by guest musicians Alto Reed and John Madison.

Gelek Rimpoche, reknowned incarnate lama and author of Good Life, Good Death, The Tara Box and other many other publications, will give an introductory talk about how the Buddha’s ancient teachings remain timelessly effective in reducing our anxieties and fears, even during these turbulent times.

“The Buddha’s teachings not only help us to conquer our fears, but
they lead us to go beyond them to gain greater peace and happiness.”

Don’t miss this Very Special opportunity to have an audience with the Nephew of the 13th Dali Lama and one who now shares love and enlightenment through Jewel Heart, an educational and cultural institute whose doors are open to everyone and whose purpose is to relay and preserve the essence of Tibetan Buddhism.

Calix Gustav Gallery Represented At Miami International Art Fair 1/7-10/10

Calix Gustav Gallery Represented At Miami International Art Fair

Celebrated fair gives cutting-edge gallery a nod with inclusion of Carl Pascuzzi’s piece “Dear Art Fair” in Wynwood Pavilion

Calix Gustav Gallery is pleased to announce the inclusion of one of its current exhibit’s most prized pieces in the Miami International Art Fair’s Wynwood Pavilion. Hand-picked by the gallery’s owner and curator, Amanda Fernandez-Leon, “Dear Art Fair” (2009) by Carl Pascuzzi contains a tongue-in-cheek message that makes it the ideal piece to represent Calix Gustav Gallery’s unique personality.

Currently on display in a prime location at the Miami Beach Convention Center – which was notably appointed by MIA Founder Lee Ann Lester – “Dear Art Fair” has far more than visual appeal. The piece, consisting of three separate 18” x 24” acrylic photo prints mounted on LED light boxes with messages reading: “I AM,” “OVER TRYING” and “TO PLEASE YOU;” is a flashy yet satirical depiction of an artist’s plea for attention and accolades.

“Dear Art Fair” is currently part of a larger exhibit at Calix Gustav Gallery entitled“Grit: to endure a trying situation and continue on without complaint.” Grit features an array of photography, sculptures, light installations and mixed media exploring the mundane, gritty, sordid and glamorous side of Miami’s Wynwood Arts District. Highlights include Yanelis Lopez’s Soap and Potatoes Series, an exploration of the manipulation of simple, everyday items; Jonathan Stein’s photography portraying the hardcore reality of social intolerance toward the transgendered community; Spunk and The Orange Kittens’ shocking “Casting Couch” represent the deplorable human lack of morality; Charles Chace’s sleek, industrial-inspired metal pieces; as well as Klaus Guingang’s thrilling marquee-like light installation “MAFIART.”

Montserrat Franco as Betty Boop at the Cabaret Extravaganza in Sobe Arts 1/8-10/10

Celebrate the new year with a fresh and compelling multimedia arts cabaret, and be the first to experience an intimate new performance space in the heart of Miami Beach’s cultural arts district. This limited-run opening event will be a feast for the senses, combining theater, music, and animation with bar and tapas from the sublime Red Light restaurant. Under the artistic direction of Carson Kievman, shows will run at 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays and 7pm on Sundays from January 1st to the end of Art Deco weekend on January 17th.

The Grand Opening Cabaret features musical and visual elements from the 1930s and 1940s, around the time the 1937 theater was first built, but adds surprises along the way. “We want to honor the historic nature of the theater,” explains Dr. Kievman, “but at the same time we’re looking to create a very contemporary experience. We’ve interspersed the original torch songs with theatrical vignettes from other eras, and together they make for a bizarre and compelling look at relationships.” There will also be scenes from the popular “Tunes ‘N Toons” production that was commissioned by Miami Beach to close November’s Sleepless Night event, combining esoteric live music from the 1930’s with classic film animation and live action.

Starring actors Montserrat Franco, Ivette Viñas, Andres Lefevre, Philip de la Cal and featuring Montserrat Franco as Betty Boop, Andres Lefevre as Cab Calloway’s Ghost. Created & Directed by Carson Kievman. Conductor, Robert Chumbley – Keyboards, Kiki Sanchez – Clarinet, Paul Gordillo – Tenor Saxophone, Juan Silveira – Drums, Tony Suarez – Bass, James Quinlan

Little Stage Theater @SoBe Arts is an intimate space that will provide seating for approximately 60 cabaret patrons so sell-outs are anticipated. Click here to purchase tickets. For more information or to reserve seats: events@sobearts.org- (305) 674-9220

You are cordially invited…

SUNBOX ELEVEN WINERY CELEBRATES THE HOLIDAYS
ENO’S WINE BAR, SOUTH BEACH
920 LINCOLN ROAD, MIAMI BEACH, FL
WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 23, 2009
6:00 P.M. – 10 P.M.

A not-so-typical California winemaker’s event will be held in your own backyard of South Florida. SUNBOX Eleven Winery owner, Sunny Fraser, and her Chef Winemaker Superdave Gordon, aren’t waking up on a vineyard next to the Napa Valley Wine Trail, but just down the street at their winery headquarters off lush Old Cutler Road here in their hometown of Miami. They travel back and forth to their cooperative winery in California to handcraft their very rare, limited production wines in single barrels until they age to perfection and then bring them back to Florida to share with the local hot-spots.

Miami’s own SUNBOX Eleven Winery will be celebrating the holidays and the release of their much-anticipated second vintage of artisan wines at Eno’s Wine Bar on South Beach. Sunny & Chef Superdave will be entertaining guests and signing bottles while people mingle and holiday shop in a relaxed environment of food and wine.

COMPLIMENTARY hors d’oeuvres will be served from 6 P.M. – 8 P.M.

Mention this (Facebook) invitation and provide your business card/contact info and your 1st wine pour is FREE, compliments of SUNBOX Eleven Winery.

The event is open to the public.

David and Lee Ann Lester, IFAE principals and founding organizers of Art Miami – from 1991 -1998, today announced the new Miami International Art Fair to be held at the Miami Beach Convention Center January 6 – 10, 2010.

“Now that we have returned from retirement, we—once again— actively manage and organize the two outstanding fairs that we established many years ago in Palm Beach. Dealers have asked that we bring back a new fair in the former, established, very successful art fair dates in early January dates at the Miami Beach Convention Center,” said David Lester. “This fair is targeted to once again serve seasonal visitors and residents who are not present in the Miami area during the December fair season.”

Lester noted that 25% of the world’s wealth is present in Florida during the winter season, which commences in January.

“This fair will serve an entirely different market segment than existing events,” said Lester. “We recognize and salute Art Basel Miami Beach – the outstanding international fair held in December – and appreciate the global recognition that it has brought to Miami Beach and the greater Miami area. Miami Beach is now an outstanding and proven art market.”

The Lester’s recognize the current challenging economy; but anticipate their long history of creative fair management will enable the majority of their dealer-clients to have a profitable experience next winter.

“Many of our former dealer-clients have expressed a desire to be part of a smaller, first-quality seasonal international event of approximately 100 dealers, but without the distractions of the highly competitive multi-fair environment that exists in December. ” said Lee Ann Lester. “The original Florida art fair concept was established in these very same dates, at the Miami Beach Convention Center in 1991, and the concept successfully served the seasonal visitors and winter residents for 18 years.”

The Miami International Art Fair will open its fair doors to a substantial number of local and Florida galleries, as well as host galleries from Latin America, North America, Europe and Asia. This exceptional fair will coordinate with local dealers to combine fair-based and gallery-based activities during the fair period. It offers galleries from afar to have a two-market approach during their January mid-winter visit to South Florida by coordinating its dates and management with the IFAE owned Artpalmbeach the following weekend. This new January fair also provides a second seasonal access in Miami Beach for visiting dealers – thereby offering an early winter seasonal presence as well as a late fall presence for galleries who have come to the Miami area for art fair exhibitions in December.

Bass Museum Of Art And Café Bustelo Commission Limited-Edition Demitasse Cup

Bustelo Cups 005b

Bass Museum Of Art And Café Bustelo Commission Limited-Edition Demitasse Cup

Created by visual artist Dzine

MIAMI BEACH, FL (November 2, 2009) – Bass Museum of Art and Café Bustelo announce their partnership to commission a yearly series of numbered, limited-edition demitasse cups created each year by a different contemporary visual artist of Hispanic background.

As organizations with rich historical pasts and vibrant futures, Café Bustelo and Bass Museum searched for an artist whose work reflected this energy. For the first cup in the series, they recruited Chicago-based artist Carlos Rolon (a.k.a. Dzine), whose work is inspired by beauty, desire, pattern, op-art, and the juxtaposition of highbrow and Chicano lowrider Kustom Kulture. The artist himself grew up drinking this traditional Hispanic-style espresso. In fact, his mother to this day orders a monthly supply from Miami, making him a natural fit for the project. The demitasse cup reflects his signature manifestation of bold colors and patterns.

While the cups offer an opportunity to take a piece of art and culture home, the Bass Museum also invited Dzine to create an all-over, site-specific wall painting presented in their new café and lounge. The café project is part of Dzine’s solo exhibition at the Bass Museum, which includes new sculpture, paintings and installations made specially for the exhibition.

The Dzine demitasse cups — a perfect holiday gift — will be available exclusively at Bass Museum of Art and online at www.bassmuseum.org, starting November 28. Each cup retails for $20. All proceeds from sales will benefit Bass Museum of Art.

About Dzine: From site-specific wall installations, to his custom Cadillac Fleetwood and crystal encrusted sculptures and paintings, Dzine’s prolific manifestation of colors, patterns, textures and sound fuse into a modern phenomenon that reveals thought-provoking combinations. Continuously inspired by Lowrider and Kustom Kulture, Dzine has been able to bolster the semantics of this genre by stretching the boundaries further with his traditional studio practice and bringing never- before-seen products to the table that contribute a unique vernacular to contemporary art.

About Bass Museum of Art: Located in the heart of Miami Beach, the Bass Museum of Art collects and exhibits some of the world’s finest art from the past through the present. Founded in 1963 when the City of Miami Beach accepted a gift of 500 works of art from collectors John and Johanna Bass, the museum has since doubled in size to 35,000 square feet, including new galleries and outdoor exhibition spaces. In addition to housing one of the best collections of Renaissance and Baroque artwork, Bass Museum’s temporary exhibitions for 2009/2010 curated by Executive Director Silvia Karman Cubiña include Dzine; Where Do We Go From Here?/Selections from The Jumex Collection; and The Mummy Project. The Bass Museum also offers lectures, film and video series, music and dance performances, open houses, free family days, and educational symposia on a regular basis. www.bassmuseum.org

About Café Bustelo: Rowland Coffee Roasters has a history dating back to 1930s of producing espresso in the traditional Hispanic style. With a family tradition of creating savory and aromatic coffee, the family believes the best coffee is achieved through quality beans and roasting perfection. Today, Café Bustelo is one of the leading and most recognizable coffee brands in the world and is part of Rowland Coffee Roasters, Inc. parent to over 12 different coffee brands brewed in the company’s state-of-the-art facility in South Florida. Café Bustelo is available throughout the United States and the Caribbean at most supermarkets and grocery stores, as well as online at www.cafebustelo.com and www.javacabana.com.

Toronto, Ontario, native Drake stepped out as a rapper and singer with major pop appeal in 2006, when he initiated a series of mixtapes. A year later he scored major exposure when his cocky and laid-back track “Replacement Girl,” featuring Trey Songz, was featured on BET’s 106 & Park program as its “Joint of the Day.” He raised his profile throughout the next several months by popping up on countless mixtapes and remixes, he gradually became one of the most talked-about artists in the industry. By the end of June 2009, “Best I Ever Had,” a promotional single, had climbed to number two on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Celebrate the new year in Miami with a special performance by Drake at Cameo Nightclub.

Mansion presents New Year’s Eve 2010 with special guest Steve Angello along with Laurent Simeca and AN21. Armed with a slew of new CDs and enough confidence to rebuild Hadrian’s Wall, Steve Angello has destroyed every event he has taken on this year. His tracks are on everyone’s playlist, first up is arguably his globe-straddling Moby remix of ‘Raining Again’. Then it was ‘Tell Me Why’ with Sebastian Ingrosso and ‘Be’ with Laidback Luke. And then ‘Be’ returned in spirit (and b-line) for ‘Show Me Love’ with original vocalist Robin S and Laidback Luke in tow, smashing clubs and Top Ten charts into tiny pieces everywhere it was dropped. Kick off your new year with a man who could be shaking any club, but chose to celebrate at Mansion.

Rodolfo Vanmarcke presenting Modern Solitudes at ArtDecoMiami 12/17/09

flyer
ArtDecoMiami 1528 Alton Road, Miami Beach, Fl 33139
Date: from 12/17/09 to 01/14/10

This coming thursday, December 17th, the venezuelan artist Rodolfo Vanmarcke will be presenting his series “Modern Solitudes”, showing a selection of 18 photographs in different formats. This exhibition is organized by ArtDealerMiami, in the gallery ArtDecoMiami (Miami Beach, FL).

Vanmarcke is pleased to announce that this will be his first solo exhibition in United States; although he has exhibited several times in group exhibitions in the city of Miami, and has also received from the judges the “Best in Show” award in the “XII Salon of Latin American and the Caribbean Art” (Broward College gallery).

“Modern Solitudes” reflects the artist vision towards the contemporary society, by stating that “The contemporary human being has buried himself in a devastating solitude due to the triumph of industrialization. We have systematically celebrated the mass manufacture of products that are elaborated under the slogan “Our greatest product is the human capital”. Ironically, that same resource is already a prefabricated product, properly packed with the in vogue clothing, the technology of the moment and under the media diet of the day. We have transformed ourselves into isolated self-idols within a temple devoid of believers; crammed full of needs that are in fact invented by a society of identical people.

We are convinced of being completely free. Universally, there hasn’t been a time with greater liberty than the actual one: a tremendous range to be chosen is presented as a fold-out menu; nevertheless there has not been a better moment than today to celebrate our sameness. But is not an equality based on ethical values, but an equality based on the depersonalization and the absolute self-exile.

“Modern Solitudes” begins and ends with this condition.”

Annette Recommends Lecca-Lecca Gelato Caffe’

I have to say that Lecca-Lecca Gelato Caffe’‎ has the best gelato I have tried, their fruit gelato is the best.  My favorite is the melon and banana, but all of their flavors are great and yes I have tried just about every one of them.  So if you are on South Beach and are craving gelato this is the place to go.

Photographs – Art Basel Week – Sunday 12/6/09

Art Basel Week on Sunday, December 6, 2009. For the last day of Art Basel we stated out at the Scope and Art Asia in Wynwood, this is always a good art show and it was again this year. I had not seen enough of  Aqua Art Miami so we head back there for another run through and still one of my favorite shows. We hit some of the smaller fairs around Aqua before heading over to Sculpt Miami. Now we head back over to South Beach to the Miami Beach Convention Center to see a little more of Art Basel, wow it is so big, you can not possible see it all. We go over to see the closing fire works at Ocean Front but just missed it. So this has been a GREAT Art Basel, I really enjoyed it and saw some wonderful art and meet some amazing people.   For the better gallery, click here. By Annette Peikert

Photographs – Art Basel Week – Friday 12/4/09

Art Basel Week on Friday, December 4, 2009.    We started the day off at CANDO Arts Co-Op Palm Court Exhibit featuring local artist.  Then we headed over to Ink Miami, this has always been one of my favorites and it still is. One of the rooms had Japanese art and it was amazing.   Then we walk over to Verge Art Fair (which was Bridge Art Fair) at the Catalina Hotel, this was a very nice fair. The one thing that really stood out was in the little garden Wild Feasties, they create a Artful Food Experience and they where awesome.  The had gone to the Redlands and picked up fresh fruits and vegetables and the tastings where amazing.   As we where walking back to our car, the street was filled with these big machines, so had to stop and take some action shots.  From there we headed over to PressitOn Gallery in the Design District , they always have such good art work and tonight was no different.  Next we hit Eat your Art Out, this had a great exhibit of emerging artists. Next we walked over to Satallite Art + Design Exhibition at the Miami Art Space.  Now we headed back to South Beach and started at the Metropole Hotel, they had an exhibit from a local artist Dallas, his artwork is awesome.   From there we headed over to the Pool Art Fair at the Carlton Hotel, they had some really cool art.  For our last stop of the night was at the Miami Design Preservation League Special Event at the Art Deco Welcome Center on 10th street.  They just did a big renovation and the looked awesome.  For the better gallery, click here.  By Annette Peikert

Art Basel Miami Beach 2009
A Master Among Us, The Art of Helene M Weiss
Hotel St. Augustine names Miami based fine artist, Helene M. Weiss, Art Basel-Artist in Residence in honor of the prestigious art show. HeleneWeiss|ART @ Hotel St. Augustine, an exhibit of abstract works, December 2 – 31, 2009

Hotel St. Augustine proudly presents, “Light & Energy”, a comprehensive collection of abstract works featuring the critically acclaimed 2005 masterpiece, “FIVE” by Miami artist and Elizabeth Morse Genius Foundation award recipient, Helene M Weiss.

The exhibit, hosted in the elegant lobby of the boutique style hotel located in the South of Fifth (SoFi) district of Miami Beach will feature a silent auction commencing on Wednesday, December 2 with winning bid(s) announced on Sunday, December 6. In addition, the exhibits featured painting, “FIVE” will be available for purchase in 5×7 greeting cards; including a limited number Art Basel commemorative cards signed Helene Weiss, Art Basel Miami Beach 2009. Art Basel attendees, members of the community and all art lovers are welcome to the month long no reservations, no invite, no fee exhibit.

Reviews
“Helene Weiss has had an open dialogue with the viewer. Pairing both the delicacy and fragility of life against its strengths and triumphs, she has arrived at a balance she likens to the teachings of Thai Chi”

“The overall harmony that is present in Helene Weiss’ paintings draw upon years of experience and process. Her paintings have reached a level of understanding and sophistication that communicates an intuitive link between strength and sublime beauty”

“Helene’s work captures the tangled human experience in all its despair and beauty, transporting viewers on an unconscious trip thru life’s truth’s and circumstances, at each point in between, the work invites memories & personal choice, ultimately leading viewers back to conscious acknowledgement of the work, life and who he or she is at that moment”

About the artist
Helene M. Weiss is a prolific painter gifted with the range, instinct, style and technique afforded only arts great masters. Ms. Weiss, now 70 has amassed a portfolio of art sixty-two years in the making, an extensive collection of original paintings born of feeling, emotion and the complexities of everyday life. Original works include figurative, abstract, still life and pencil drawings, each a masterpiece from conception defined by color, form and a fluidity that is not literal, not clever, rather relatable and profound.

Born 1939 in Brooklyn, New York, Helene Weiss has literally been painting all her life. In grade school, her art instructor at the Center Academy in Brooklyn and his then colleague, aspiring artist Mark Rothko took notice of Helene’s natural gift, urging the Weiss family to nurture and encourage the blossoming abilities of a then seven-year-old Helene.
Attending Boston University’s School of Fine & Applied Arts Helene received a scholarship to study at the Brooklyn Museum of Art where her work received top honors in the Museum’s “Fence Art Show.” Helene was later awarded a fellowship to the world renowned, Provincetown Workshop, a host to premiere artists from around the world and the place she would meet personal mentors, famed artists Robert Motherwell and Helen Frankenthaler.

Helene Weiss|ART has been exhibited in galleries across the country and throughout her native New York, including The National Arts Gallery, Lincoln Center, Brooklyn Museum of Art and The Cloisters, Metropolitan Museum of Art. Today, Ms. Weiss enjoys an international following thanks in large part to Art Basel and the print media, most notably, the acclaimed book published in 2007, “Miami Contemporary Artists”, which named Helene as one of the “key artists who have played a role in bringing the cultural evolution of Miami to fruition”

About: Educate Tomorrow, Corp. is an international, nonprofit, certified 501(c)(3) organization. All over the world, poverty denies children, as well as adults, the promises of a better tomorrow. Forgotten by society and social welfare programs, children born into poverty are trapped in a cruel and often violent cycle that frequently continues for generations. Lacking the inspiration, confidence, knowledge, and means to change, entire families are lost to the cycle of hopelessness.

Educate Tomorrow believes that the best way to end the cycle of poverty is through education. Our mission is to make education an attainable goal for the most disadvantaged in our world, so that all may be afforded the possibilities that can be achieved through learning. We strive to reach out to these individuals and provide them inspiration, guidance, and support and lead them on the path of life-long learning.

Educate Tomorrow’s primary mission in the US is to provide one-on-one educational mentors to foster care children that are turning 18 and “aging out” of the system. Since its founding in 2003, Educate Tomorrow has successfully implemented its mentoring programs, education programs and life skills camps across the nation. Additionally, it has reached internationally by continuing to support the work of it’s founders who established one of the first local language primary schools, adult literacy programs and boarding schools in the remote and impoverished village of Kabey Fo in Niger, West Africa.

Photographs – Art Basel Week – Wednesday 12/2/09

Art Basel Week on Wednesday, December 2, 2009. The first thing we did was run by the Art Basel Miami Beach Vernissage. You will not be seeing any photographs from that. After a hassle in the media registration, we were told that no cameras were allowed (though our media badges have a camera on them). So we bailed fast and got the fun underway! We first stopped by Red Dot in Mid-Town and this one is great, the artwork is fantastic.  Then we moved on to the Design District and stopped by 101/Exhibit Gallery and as always they had a really good event.  The food was simple but really good (the pigs in a blanket are always a hit with me).  They also have a good variety of different styles of art.  Next our friends at BRPR had a launch party at a new boutique Anya Ponorovskaya, she is a designer from New York and her designs are very beautiful.  Now we  headed over to O.H.W.O.W., and of course it was fabulous, there were so many people and the artwork was awesome.  There was also a celebrity siting, Iggy Pop.  As we where heading over to Art Whino we saw a house that was so decorated for Christmas, had to stop and take a picture.  We made it to Art Whino at Charcoal Studios, you have to stop, it is a small fair but well worth the stop.  Now we head over to the beach for a couple stops, our first stop on the beach was Ocean Front (where Art Positions was the last several years, which was on of my favorites) I was not impressed with it, but it might be for some people.  Our last stop for the night was the after party for Primary Flight at The Shore Club, they had live graffiti artists,  music and a wonderful crowd, taking place around the pool, can not ask for  much better than that.  For the better gallery, click here.   By Annette Peikert

Louboutin’s crystal stiletto flute reinvents the scandalous ritual for haute couture at a time when we all crave excitement and escapism the most. Where Do We Go From Here? Selections from La Colección Jumex explores one of the most important collections of contemporary art in Latin America. The exhibition is co-organized by the Bass Museum in Miami Beach and the Contemporary Arts Center, located in the Lois and Richard Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Fundación/Colección Jumex based in Mexico. This will be the first time that this collection is shown in the United States.

Focusing on art as a cultural index, Where Do We Go From Here? highlights key aspects of La Colección Jumex. Juxtaposing inter-generational artists, as well as artists from or based in Mexico with international counterparts, the exhibition has four sections: art about art; art and urban anthropology; text in art; and a series of artist profiles.

Appropriation strategies are fundamental in contemporary art. Whether direct, part quotation or reference, artists such as Sherrie Levine, Louise Lawler, Richard Pettibone and Jonathan Monk have raised issues of utmost relevance regarding originality and authorship; the frameworks of art; gender; and mass media.

In recent years, the art scene in Mexico City has received international attention. Among the central issues that define art from the megalopolis is the use of urban culture as an art laboratory. A diverse grouping of works are presented and read through this lens, including art by Francis Alÿs, Carlos Amorales, Jenny Holzer, Abraham Cruzvillegas, Minerva Cuevas, Daniel Guzmán, On Kawara, Damian Ortega, Andy Warhol, and Kelley Walker.

Art Basel Miami Beach 2009 The Oceanfront area Platform for artistic programs 12/3-6/09

The Oceanfront area: Our new Platform for artistic programs
Dear Mr. Echols
The new Oceanfront area in Collins Park has been created as a platform for virtually all of Art Basel Miami Beach’s cultural programming. Situated directly beside the beach, the Oceanfront marks the point where the artworld interfaces with the broader public. We are delighted to have Creative Time, the legendary New York City-based public art organization, as a partner in the launching of this new dimension of Art Basel Miami Beach. Having solicited many proposals, Creative Time and Art Basel Miami Beach commissioned Los Angeles artist Pae White to create this “social space” .

Free of any admission charge, the Oceanfront – located at Collins Park, between 21st and 22nd Streets – offers visitors many opportunities. In the mornings, they can attend the discussion panels of the Art Basel Conversations series, featuring prominent figures from every artworld domain. And every night during Art Basel Miami Beach, the Oceanfront will feature at least one special event. The evening series will be inaugurated by the annual Art Loves Music concert on the beach; the following evenings feature the Art Perform program curated by Jens Hoffmann of the Wattis Institute, the Art Video program curated by Meredith Johnson of Creative Time and the Art Film evening curated by This Brunner. Rounding out the experience, the Oceanfront Cafe will offer visitors the possibility to have brunch in the morning, then light meals and refreshing drinks from dusk to midnight.
Oceanfront project by Pae White
For the 2009 premiere of the Oceanfront, Pae White will create an immersive and interactive cityscape that will provide a new experience with each visit. By day, large color blocks will dominate the landscape. At night, these color blocks transform into a shadowy group of buildings that house various merchants and performers. In addition to this labyrinth-like metropolis on the sand, White will design an open-air stage that will host the Art Video, Art Film, and Art Perform programs and Art Basel Conversations.

Born in 1963 in Pasadena, CA, Pae White graduated from Scripps College, Claremont and received her MFA from Art Center College of Design, Pasadena. White has exhibited internationally at institutions such as the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, Scottsdale, Arizona (2008); Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington DC (2007); Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati, Ohio (2007); UCLA Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2004). White was a featured artist in the Skulptur Projekte Münster, 2007 and in this year’s Venice Biennale.

Art Basel Conversations
Thursday, December 3 through Saturday, December 5, 10 – 11 am
As in previous years, the Art Basel Conversations will be inaugurated by the Artist Talk premiere, which this year features Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. The Art Basel Conversations are “Museum Directors: Change in Generation,” “Collector Focus: Latin America” and “The Future of the Museum: The Portable Museum.” There is time allotted after each Art Basel Conversation for the audience to engage with the panel in a more informal fashion.

“Museum Directors: Change in Generation” brings together the next generation of museum and institution directors to discuss their visions for the coming decades. In “Collector Focus: Latin America” prominent art collectors from Argentina, Brazil and Mexico explore the dynamic way in which Latin Americas’ collecting scene has grown and internationalized in the last decade. “The Future of the Museum: The Portable Museum,” will offer fresh insights on future models for exhibition-making.

Art Video
Thursday, December 3 and Saturday, December 5, 7 – 8.30 pm
Curated by Creative Time, the Art Video program includes discussions with the featured artists and curators.

Thursday, December 3, 7 – 8.30 pm
“Video Art and Mainstream Distribution”
Artist video is often created for and sited in pristine white box spaces, where there is a deliberateness to the viewing environment and the context of the work is clearly articulated. Tom Sachs and his collaborators the Neistat Brothers challenge this tradition through humorous, low-tech, do-it-yourself performances presented both in the gallery and outside it. Like Sachs and the Neistat Brothers, Marc Horowitz uses media outlets such as YouTube and network television to distribute his hilarious interventions throughout the United States. These artists are innovators in exposing mainstream audiences to artist video, and pushing the borders between conceptual practice and everyday experience.

Followed by a conversation with Casey Neistat and Marc Horowitz.

Saturday, December 5, 7 – 8.30 pm
“The Watcher and the Watchedˮ
Jill Magid, an artist who explores the personal boundaries of state surveillance, uses catalogued CCTV footage to construct film noir-like narratives with herself and her location as subject. Magid uses the tools of photographic evidence to explore the deeply conflicted condition of one’s loss of control. In her work the camera, and its operator, move from anonymous watcher to intimate participant. In Kon Trubkovich’s videos, the camera takes on an aggressive and controlling identity. Tackling the tension between freedom and captivity, the subjects of his work participate in Sisyphean activities that keep them from escaping their condition. Both Magid and Trubkovich navigate the borders between personal liberty and institutional restraint, implicating the viewer in the power dynamics presented in their work.

Kon Trubkovich
“Repeat Offender”, 2005 (11:07), “Ant Farm”, 2007 (9:54)
Followed by a conversation with Jill Magid and Kon Trubkovich.

Art Perform
Thursday, December 3 and Saturday, December 5, 9 pm
In its fifth year, Art Perform now features an intensified program of longer performances by rising international artists. This program will again be conceived by curator Jens Hoffmann, director of the CCA Wattis Institute, San Francisco. It will take place on Thursday and Saturday at 9 pm. The participating artists are Claire Fontaine, Simon Fujiwara, Loris Gréaud and Mario Garcia Torres, Kris Martin, and Kelly Nipper.

Thursday, December 3
9 pm – Simon Fujiwara
This autobiographical play, written and performed by the artist, restages his first encounter with a modern artwork, “Horizontal Stripe Painting” by abstract expressionist Patrick Heron, when he was 11 years old. Featuring a counterfeit reproduction of the original canvas as backdrop, Fujiwara’s play re-enacts multiple versions of this encounter, taking us on an increasingly absurd art-historical and personal journey told through the memories of a repressed pubescent boy.

9.30 pm – Kelly Nipper
With the physicality of sculpture, memory of film, body of a camera and mind of a crystallographer, Nipper’s performance suspends time and space by counterbalancing expressive movement with the process of assembling a human-scale icosahedron to examine the patterns of a hurricane.

10 pm – Kris Martin
Flemish artist Kris Martin has never performed before and does not think of himself as particularly talented in this form of artistic expression. His contribution to Art Perform will be an autobiographical monologue describing how he became an artist. Sitting somewhere between reality and fiction, confession and storytelling, Martin’s piece will revolve around key (and perhaps embarrassing) moments of his own upbringing that all of us have experienced in one way or the other.

Saturday, December 5, 9 pm
9 pm – Claire Fontaine
In this performance, the punch mannequin called a Body Opponent Bag (BOB) is installed on the stage and several professional fighters are invited to use a variety of methods to beat it, displaying a frightening use of physical force and aggression. While BOB is an anthropomorphic object constructed for the purpose of being beaten up, he also functions in this performance as a ready-made sculpture that becomes the catalyst for a projection of hatred.

9.30 pm – Loris Gréaud and Mario Garcia Torres
Using the film “Groundhog Day” (1993) as a starting point, this project is an intervention of repeating daily events, both almost unnoticeable and obvious, into the routine of the art show. Mimicking the film’s fictional phenomenon of a loop in space and time, the daily repetition of an odd sequence of events creates a sense that the show is re-lived over and over again each day, culminating in an onstage interview between Art Perform curator Jens Hoffmann and Phil, the character from “Groundhog Day”.

Art Film: “Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child”
Friday, December 4, 8.30 pm
This year’s Art Film event features an exclusive work-in-progress sneak preview of the documentary feature film “Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child,” preceded by a panel with a selection of participants, moderated by Bob Colacello. “Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child” is directed by Tamra Davis and features a long and never-before-seen interview with Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988), shot shortly before his death. The (90-minute) documentary further comprises footage of Basquiat in his studio, interviews with approximately 50 people who knew him intimately, rare archival material and work by the artist. Art Film is curated by Zurich film connaisseur This Brunner.

Miguel Paredes to unveil The Manifestation of Cross-Over Art 12/2/09

Miguel Paredes to unveil The Manifestation of Cross-Over Art at Art Basel Miami Beach 2009

WHO / WHAT: Acclaimed Miami pop artist and urban impressionist, Miguel Paredes, will present his highly-anticipated exhibition, The Manifestation of Cross-Over Art: An Exhibit of New Media Genesis, during Art Basel Miami Beach 2009. The installation will take place at a pop-up gallery located at 412 Lincoln Road and will celebrate the launch of Art Basel with a grand opening reception on Wednesday, December 2, 2009 hosted by 944 Magazine. Cocktails will be provided courtesy of Leblon, an ultra-premium cachaça produced in Brazil, V Georgio Vodka, One Life Water and is catering provided by RA Sushi Restaurant and Sushi Samba.

The Manifestation of Cross-Over Art will be a multicolored demonstration utilizing mixed styles of art and media showcasing Paredes’ never-before-seen paintings and sculptures from his Digital Art and Los Niños collections. Throughout the exhibit, guests can expect to see fine art pieces as well as digital artwork; however, they will also be introduced to a modern genre, “cross-over art.” The pop artist’s trend-forward style will be exemplified in his most recent works and will capture the intriguing combination of classic fine art mixed with digital pieces resulting in riveting, eye-catching compositions.

“I am excited to show Miami Beach a new enthralling way of mixed, multi-media art! Art enthusiasts will experience a floor-to-ceiling explosion of brilliant, vibrant colors at The Manifestation of Cross-Over Art. My passion for Japanese animation, the 80s New York urban art movement and the works of renowned pop artist Peter Max have all been of great inspiration,” says Paredes.

“The Manifestation of Cross-Over Art will also be an exhibit about exploring media and pushing its boundaries, therefore, creating art catering to an even greater mass appeal,” says Paredes. Each individual piece of artwork will be presented in different types of media – the base or surface to which the paint is applied. State-of-the-art technology has been applied to materialize unique pieces of original artwork using metal, flat LED light displays, clay, canvas and many more mediums.

During the grand opening cocktail reception and through the remainder of the weeklong exhibition, collectors will have access to Paredes’ inaugural toy and figurine line including mini versions of the seemingly innocent, yet rebellious characters found in his numerous collections.

About Miguel Paredes
Paredes, a New York native, combines cutting-edge styles of street art, pop art and Japanese animation to create distinct, trend-forward pieces. Drawing inspiration from pop icons such as Andy Warhol and Keith Haring, he has created his own niche of street graffiti, landscape and pop art affording him the ability to singlehandedly crossover from street walls to creating decorative art. Over the years, Paredes took the Miami Beach art scene by storm, selling out numerous venues to become one of the most prosperous local artists. Paredes, who has been Miami Beach based for over two decades, acquired a private studio space on Lincoln Road to further expand his inspirational environment while simultaneously showcasing his works at local, national and international shows such as Art Basel. In November “CCE on Stage” features the final round of performances by La Excepción with film and a music concert with Depedro + Martin Wenk.

La Excepción, the Spanish leading flamenco hip-hop band will have a double take in Miami with the presentation of the movie “El Truco del Manco” where the band’s mastermind “El Langui” is the leading actor. The movie was awarded 3 Goya Awards for best direction, actor and theme song. www.eltrucodelmanco.com

La Excepción (The Exception That Proves The Rule) is a rapband from Madrid, composed of two MCs: El Langui (Juan Manuel Montilla) and Gitano Antón (Antonio Moreno), and DJ La dako style (Javier Ibañez). They started a small revolution in the Spanish hip-hop scene, opening new doors with a very self-assured and personal style that integrates flamenco, Cheli slang, and a lot of humor, without losing the social critique so central to hip-hop. They have made, from a very local identity, a universal rap that has become popular around the whole country and has achieved rankings not normally held by hip-hop. They won Best Album of the Year in Rolling Stone Magazine for their first work “Cata Cheli”. www.laexcepcion.net

DePedro may be the first solo album for the man behind the name, Jairo Zavala, but in no way is it his debut. Already a celebrated recording artist in Spain, where he was born and raised, Zavala has spent the past two decades playing, writing, and performing with bands like Amparanoia, Vacazul, Los Coronas, and Calexico. The Miami concert will feature Martin Wenk from Calexico. DePedro is his most personal work, with songs written from his own experiences, his own thoughts and feelings, the music he’s looked to – from Afrobeat to flamenco to prog to pop. The inspirations are simple, the everyday things we all experience that unite and define us as human: regret, memory, love, fear, loss, and happiness. Jairo Zavala is a National Geographic World Music recording artist. www.myspace.com/myspacedepedro

Annette Recommends Deco Sandwiches

Deco Sandwiches’ name is sort of a misleading, they serve a lot more than just sandwiches, and they also serve traditional Turkish food. My favorite, so far is their gyros, it is amazing. But I do have to say they have one of the best hamburgers on the beach, they make it as you order. You have to try their french fries; the seasoning that they put on them is soooooooooooo good. They have some of the best Baklava I have had in a long time.
