Founded in 1962, The Conjunto Folklórico Nacional is Cuba’s premier folkloric ensemble, and represents the performance traditions of the entire country, with an emphasis on Cuba’s African-based genres, such as rumba, comparsa, and the performance traditions associated with Afro-Cuban religions – namely, Regla de Ocha, Palo Monte, Arará, Tumba Francesa, and Abakwá. It is an outstanding performance of traditional Afro-Cuban folkloric music, as well as featuring performances by one of the largest assemblage of Cuban folkloric masters ever. Today, 48 years after its founding, the Ensemble has developed its own unique artistic style. El Conjunto Folklórico Nacional de Cuba has performed more than eight hundred thousand times, through its 93 international tours in Europe, America and Asia, and audiences from more than three hundred cities and towns worldwide have thrilled at their performances, different audiences have acclaimed in numerous languages the traditional songs and dances created by the Cuban people.

Men’s Swimsuit Show Ignited Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim Runway Swell Suits Miami 2011 Debuts All Male Swimwear Group Show By Betty Alvarez

The annual Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week SWIM made a big splash this year in Miami with the much-anticipated debut of Swell Suits Miami 2011 – the first all male swimwear group show to hit the runway. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week SWIM was a “by invitation only” event featuring worldwide top swimwear designers showcasing their collections in two runway venues, the Cabaña Grande and the Oasis, as well as Raleigh’s pool and penthouse.

Swell Suits Miami 2011 features the exclusive Spring/Summer swimwear collections of designers Naila, Olasul and parke & ronen. The show premiered on July 16 at 8 PM at the Oasis in the historic Raleigh Hotel in Miami Beach.

“This marks the launch of menswear getting the much-deserved attention in this all-important show,” said the producers of Swell Suits. “We are so excited to be making fashion history and believe this premiere marks a significant milestone that is greatly welcomed by the fashion community and IMG (the producers of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week SWIM).”

Men’s swimwear has come a long way in the last century. In the 1930s, men were still wearing full-body swimwear designed for modesty. Today, men’s swimwear offers versatile cuts, lengths, color and materials all designed to complement one’s physique.

This year’s featured Swell Suits Miami designers have established a design ethic with focus on detail and use of the finest materials.

Inspired by nature, Naila is oriented toward eco-friendly and innovative materials. Naila will be launching the first ever made recyclable and environmentally friendly men trunk short. Exclusively handmade in Italy, each piece in the collection features refined details, sleek silhouettes and European cuts in vibrant colorful palettes. Additional to the men line, Naila also carries an uber-chic women line and miniature version of daddy’s bathing suit.

Peruvian-born designer Lorenz Korder’s Olasul swimwear collection celebrates the unique Peruvian surf culture. Made from the highest quick-drying materials, the Olasul collection has been described as “chicly understated” with bold, funky colors. “Each piece tells a story and harkens back to a time and place where surfing was a gentleman’s sport,” Korder said.

parke & ronen – an exclusively all-male swimwear line – has grown to be a pioneer in the men’s swimwear world and a leader in the industry since 1997. The company has created a name for itself by reinventing the 50’s style men’s swim short with the creation of its signature Snap! Short. The company offers a range of styles, from knee-grazing board shorts to sexy briefs.

Randolph Engineering, as a sponsor of Swell Suits Miami will accessorize the models with their sleek lines of handcrafted premium sunglasses and shooting eyewear. Dee & Co. Hair Studio will work the backstage doing hair and makeup; owner of Dee & Co. Hair Studio and celebrity hair stylist, Dee Adames is also the winner of Bravo’s TV hit “Shear Genius” season 2.

The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari (1920, Germany, Robert Wiene, 72 minutes, b&w, DVD)—In this silent 1920s masterpiece, an insane asylum inmate explains to his psychiatrist how he came to the institution, telling the shrink the story of the evil hypnotist Caligari and his unwitting pawn, the sleepwalker Cesare. This stark expressionist film from German director Robert Wiene astonishes with the power of its sets and visuals, and the creepy plot easily raises hackles on the back of one’s neck. What if you woke up one summer day and discovered that the tables had been turned – that you had shrunk to the size of an ant, and towering above you were a giant spider, an enormous praying mantis, and a huge, snapping Venus flytrap? No, it is not another sequel to “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.”

It is the Florida premiere of Sarruga, Barcelona’s famed street theater group. Spectacular giant insects will cavort in an indoor show filled with music, lights and movement. The City of Miami Beach’s acclaimed Arts in the Parks series moves into the Miami Beach Convention Center for Sarruga’s spectacular “Insects.” This unique, not-to-be-missed entertainment will be held July 22 – 25 in Hall B. The family event is free.

“We’re so excited,” said Max Sklar, Miami Beach’s director of Tourism and Cultural Development. “We had hoped to bring Sarruga for the first Sleepless Night. When we heard they were coming to perform in Chicago’s Millennium Park this summer, we jumped on the chance to present them to the people of South Florida.”

“Insects” is made possible by the City of Miami Beach Department of Tourism and Cultural Development and Arts in the Parks, with Centro Cultural Español, the Bass Museum of Art, and the Catalina Hotel and Beach Club.

Smirnoff Ice and Univision Radio Summer Concert Series Featuring R.K.M & Ken-y 8/6/10

Smirnoff Ice and Univision Radio Launch Second Summer Concert Series Featuring Latin Music Artists

Univision Radio and Smirnoff Ice launch their second Summer Concert Series in Miami featuring chart-topping Latin music artists, this time enlisting the social media savvy public relations and ad house hybrid The brpr Group, conveniently based here in Miami. This summer, the series kicks-off seaside at Nikki Beach with Grammy nominated reggaeton duo R.K.M & Ken-y.

R.K.M & Ken-y, both from Puerto Rico, got their start after being noticed by Omar Fernando and Raphy Pina, two reggaeton moguls who quickly signed the duo. Since then, R.K.M & Ken-y have been an unstoppable force in the industry and audience favorites among the Hispanic public. Their first hit single, “Down”, reached #1 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart in 2006, and their album reached platinum status with over 600,000 copies sold internationally.

Like most Univision Radio events, the concert promises to be a social media frenzy, open only to contest winners who will have scored their passes by competing on several online platforms. R.K.M & Ken-y fans will have their chance at winning these free tickets by participating in trivia pop-quizzes on Twitter, local college campus “Barcoding”, which encourages students to add user-generated media content through the new and innovative social media retail network Stickybits, Foursquare check-ins mentioning Smirnoff Ice, and by broadcasting their inner “reggaetonero” via the Smirnoff Ice YouTube Channel and Facebook Fan Page. While Trivia champions and “Barcoders” will receive general admission passes to the hot summer concert, winning “reggaetoneros” will be awarded VIP entry, granting them access to the Smirnoff Ice Cooling Spot and exclusive concert after party. Winners of Twitter Trivia, or by any other virtual means, will be embarked upon a social media scavenger hunt using the aforementioned platforms to officially redeem their passes at an undisclosed location in Miami Beach.

The brpr Group’s resident TJ “Twitter Jockey”, Manu Gabaldon, will be on the scene during this highly anticipated reggaeton extravaganza orchestrating the concert’s stream of consciousness while on the 1’s and 2.0’s, with help from SocialBuzz TV and USTREAM, making the concert especially interactive by live-streaming audience tweets, twit-pics, and fan shots on the big screen. “We love what we do because we’re constantly creating and striving to innovate the digital space. The opportunity to work with Univision Radio on the Smirnoff Summer Concert Series is the perfect storm for the pioneer,” says the brpr Group’s Social Media Curator, Jennifer Batchelor, “merging music, food & beverage, social media, radio, and video 3.0, while allowing us to engage with the most ‘social’ sect of all, Hispanics.

FREEDOM ?: an art exhibition at CANDO Arts Co-Op 7/16/10

“FREEDOM ?: an art exhibition”
Friday, July 16, 2010, 4-9 p.m.
CANDO Arts Co-Op
309 23rd Street, Miami Beach
One block west of Collins Avenue
CANDO ARTS CO-OP on Facebook

ARE YOU FREE?

What shackles bind you? Are you tied up emotionally? Spiritually? Financially? Politically?

The resident and guest artists of CANDO Arts Co-Op have unleashed their creativity in a variety of media to express their feelings about what freedom means to them: having it, losing it, fighting for it. For one artist, it’s a commentary on women’s lib; for another, it’s a visual reminder of how fragile our society is, and yet for others it’s about physical barriers and how our hearts liberate us.

The interpretations are as varied and individual as the artists themselves and you can share their experiences at the Opening Reception of “Freedom ?: an art exhibition,” Friday, July 16, 4-9 p.m. at CANDO ARTS CO-OP, 309 23rd Street, Miami Beach, one block west of Collins Avenue. Bijoux Beach Miami launch at Miami SwimShow 7/17-20/10

Mandrake Public Relations Announces the Official Introduction of Bijoux Beach
Finally the Luxe Beachwear Line Has Come to Miami, Florida.

Bijoux Beach a line of sophisticated beachwear will finally take over Miami, Florida during its Miami launch, taking place this upcoming Miami SwimShow 2011 from July 17 through July 20, 2010. This annual event usually brings together the most popular and exotic lines of swimwear, as it is considered the largest and most important swimwear trade show in the world. It’s the perfect international platform for Bijoux Beach’s takeover, as this London-based line enters the golden and sunny beaches of the United States.

Bijoux Beach is characterized for delivering show-stopping beach glamour, while still making it look effortless. The line has been casting its hypnotizing spell all over the world, and is about to take the U.S. by storm. Formed in 2004, Bijoux Beach has already established an impressive presence as it guarantees premium fabrics and hand-finished components. Characteristics that will captivate and no doubt conquer its future targets as Bijoux Beach is set to include its swimsuits and transition dresses to New York, Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

The Spring/Summer collection is all about show-stopping details, opulence and figure flattering silhouettes. Bijoux Beach’s design flair is showcased in pieces like the Tulla, a two-piece pleated suit, constructed with impeccable lines and handcrafted with a Perspex buckle detail. Bijoux Beach evokes women’s eternal feminine qualities and infuses them with luxury features. Each piece summons the beauty and confidence of the feminine body in timeless looks, featuring goddess-like details. And lets not forget about Bijoux Beach’s most recognized touch, its crystal embellishments on figure “fantastic” silhouettes, such as the Orbis. This one-piece stylish sensation not only showcases this season’s hottest color, Salmon, but also combines it with delicate crystal beading and royal peacock feathers.

As the Miami SwimShow brings together fashion connoisseurs in an international forum, Bijoux Beach will make its initial exultant steps into the United States where it will be appreciated and loved by every woman’s inner sophisticated beach goddess, who craves only the finest things in life. For more information contact Paola De Castro at 786-218-5540 or via email at paola@mandrakepr.com. The series of events will take place from July 17 – 20th at the Miami Beach Convention Center which will include a fashion show and cocktail parties.

Classic glamour is back and on the beach. Bijoux Beach is a Collection of Luxury beachwear that offers timeless, couture-focused cuts, finishes and luxurious fabrics in the season’s most evocative colors with embellishments such as Swarovski crystals, gold, corals, turquoise and other semi-precious stones. Bijoux Beach Collections draw influences from luxury nautical living: think extravagant yachts and undiscovered isles.

Neal Rosenthal :: Under the Radar Winemakers and the Indigenous Grapes of Italy

In its best and purest form wine must reflect a specific sense of place. Neal Rosenthal brings to the market distinctive wines that reflect this devotion to the concept of “terroir”.

“The role of the winemaker is to render the fundamental character of the wine in its most clear and precise form so that it speaks to us of its geographical origin, its birthplace as it were, and the special conditions obtained in the particular vintage… An overwhelming percentage of wine made today refers only to where it wants to be – not from where it comes.”

This Thursday, taste the terroir of Umbria and Valle d’Aosta in these outstanding selections from The Mad Rose Group.

.a different fur, a premier men’s clothing line renowned for redefining fashion with an independent expression, is hosting an exclusive shopping event with a designer meet-and-greet, STARK 2010 collection presentation and cocktail reception.

From their signature collection that debuted in 2007, .a different fur introduced the encouragement of individualism through a unique vision of fashion-forward menswear by incorporating ultramodern designs and silhouettes into everyday basics. Today, the Peru-based brand founded by Alex Garcia and Nicole Bolivar, is still a cult following amongst men all over the world.

.a different fur takes a new approach with STARK 2010 and for the first time, the brand introduces a colorless, unembellished collection. The limited-edition collection consists of T-shirts, henleys, vests, blazers, jackets and pants in simple shades of black, grey and charcoal. STARK 2010 is inspired by New York City’s surroundings and the dim hues of the buildings, asphalt streets and seasonal weather. The collection will continue to feature avant-garde silhouettes on Peruvian pima cotton basic and highlights from the line include the scarf shirt, 12-button hoody, black and white monochromatic blazers and cargo skinny pants.

The livelihood of the evening’s ambiance will be complemented by the stimulating surroundings of Miami’s latest gem and the company of South Florida’s trendy elite. Guests are invited to enjoy live beats, experience an extraordinary live performance by Miami acoustic performer Jem Marie and a Spring/Summer 2011 fashion installation with live models while indulging in complimentary cocktails provided by fenom Modern Absinthe and a cravings bar stocked with delectable confectionary goods.

Peruse .a different fur’s Spring/Summer 2010 and STARK 2010 collections – reflecting their philosophy of producing thought-provoking, forward-thinking menswear – including subtle graphics, tactile materials, well-appointed details and muted color combinations featured in a variety of menswear from asymmetrical-buttoned t-shirts, button-shield raglan hoodies to canvas cargo shorts and skinny pants with price points ranging from $45 to $250.

Since 2007, .a different fur rouses the most inspirational movement of creating individuality through fashion. The brand incorporates simple but tactile materials such as pima, modal cotton, ribbed and thermal fabrics onto avant-garde silhouettes. . a different fur’s unique pieces are adored by celebrities including Robert Pattinson, Kellen Lutz and The Frey. The brand has also attracted many of the world’s finest retailers, including Fred Segal and specialty boutiques including Base (Miami, FL), Bill Hallman (Atlanta, GA) and Matthew Izzo (Philadelphia, PA). Social Media Day in Miami at The Pelican Hotel on Wednesday, June 30, 2010. MIAMI edition presented by Mashable.com & The brpr Group for the Miami sect. This was a celebration for those Miami social media mavens!

Social Media Day – MIAMI edition presented by Mashable.com & The brpr Group
Last night was an epic celebration of everything Social Media, and our Miami festivities were the biggest in the southeast (and bigger than LA). Miamians have once again proven their digital prowess as over 100 Social Media aficionados “checked-in” to The Pelican Hotel and Restaurant on Ocean Drive, giving a whole new, flesh and bones meaning to the term Social Networking Site.

Social Media Day, or #SMDAY as we call it in the biz, is the creation of Mashable and Meetup was the HQ, calling upon each city’s Social Media Mavens and Maestros to organize their own observance as Pete Cashmore, CEO of Mashable explains, “I see social media day as the beginning. We would like you to use this platform to continue to organize regular Meetups in your area.”

The brpr Group was thrilled to answer the calling of the all-mighty Mashable as Agency Director, Christopher Renz, raves, “Being a part of the first ever Social Media Day is like being present for the first ever Valentine’s Day or St. Patrick’s Day. Ok, maybe not exactly the same, but it is huge — especially being on the ground and knowing how fast Social Media is growing. It was an honor for us at The brpr Group to be able to work with Mashable and we are very happy to help position Miami at the forefront of the revolution.”

SocialBuzzTV and USTREAM were large contributors, documenting this first ever Social Media Day extravaganza for the ages. Live streaming for nationwide bragging rights and an incredible postcelebration recap, already a YouTube sensation among those in the know, made Miami’s #SMDAY so much more than a “trending topic” on Twitter. Miami’s village voices were in full effect with The
Miami New Times, Soul of Miami, BizBash, and Miami Magazine, to name a few, as they bore witness to digital history in the making.

“If you’re in the business of Social Media, it’s really ‘Social Media Day’ everyday,” says Jennifer Batchelor, Social Media Curator for The brpr Group, “What makes today and this #SMDay celebration so special is the free bubbly with “check-in”. I mean, who doesn’t want to drink up while you Tweetup? But all Social Media nerd jokes aside, we are so grateful to the city of Miami and to Mashable for allowing us the opportunity to organize this gathering and celebrate the new school 2.0 tomfoolery with the finest digital media dynamos, community managers, and SMO pros in the industry.”

THE GENERAL (1926, US, Buster Keaton, 75 minutes, b&w, DVD)—Consistently ranked among the greatest films ever made, Buster Keaton’s The General is so brilliantly conceived and executed that it continues to inspire awe and laughter with every viewing. Rejected by the Confederate army as unfit and taken for a coward by his beloved Annabelle Lee, young Johnnie Gray sets out to single-handedly win the war with the help of his cherished locomotive. What follows is, without exaggeration, probably the most cleverly choreographed comedy ever recorded on celluloid. The Dynamo Café will also offer 2-for-1 beer and wine from 6-9pm on Dyno’Nites, especially designed as a venue for the local community to present their talent and knowledge. Photographs of Hands Across the Sand on Miami Beach on 6/26/10

Hands Across the Sand on Miami Beach was held Saturday Morning, June 26, 2010.  Surfrider Foundation, the Sierra Club, Greenpeace, Environment Florida, 1Sky, ECOMB, and the Urban Paradise Guild for Hands Across the Sand – a global day of action to say NO to offshore drilling and YES to clean energy!  Millions of people joined hands on thousands of beaches around the world to draw a literal and figurative line in the sand protecting our coasts from any more oil disasters! The only way to ensure we never again see another Deepwater Horizon is to once and for all become free of our dependence on fossil fuels. The obstacles to this are not technical, or economic – they are political. Join us in sending a message loud and clear that we demand our leaders ban all new offshore drilling and start the clean energy revolution today!

Felipe Lamoglia is a Cuban saxophonist, composer, and arranger, born in Holguin, Cuba. His big professional opportunity came at age of 18, being hired to play with NG La Banda, one of the most acclaimed Cuban orchestras ever. Felipe funded his own Orchestra called Oni-Ache, traveling to Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1992 for a musical exchange program with the University of Sao Paulo and went on to live in Brazil for seven years.

It was later, in 2004 when Felipe joined the GRAMMY Award-winner Gonzalo Rubalcaba, recording his GRAMMY Award-nominated album “Paseo”, released by the prestigious Blue Note Records. Around this time he kept on performing for two years with the New Cuban Quartet all over the world. In 2006 he arranged and played on Ignacio Berroa’s new album “Codes”, also released by Blue Note Records and nominated for a GRAMMY as well. This led to performing with Mr. Berroa’s quartet in diverse tours.

Recently Felipe worked as a producer in Arturo Sandoval’s latest album “Rumba Palace”, which won a GRAMMY Award in 2008, being in charge of all the arrangement and composing. By the end of 2007 his first solo album “Dimensions”, recorded in Brazil, was released. This project incorporates his Afro-Cuban roots with strong influences of Jazz and Brazilian music. “I can assure you no other place in the world deserves my solo debut more. I really hope that everyone who in one way or another has followed and supported my music through all these years can enjoy this album and receive my sincere thanks through all my music.”

Human Rites Exhibition Opening Reception at Bass Museum 6/24/10

human rites opening reception: Thursday, June 24 – 7-9pm
Gertrude Silverstone Muss Gallery
6pm: private curator tour for upper level members ($125 and higher)
free for members, $10 for non-members

The Bass Museum of Art is pleased to present Human Rites. This exhibition examines ritual through art; and it also examines art through ritual, depending on your point of view. From mundane human activities to sacred practices, from the past through the present, rites and rituals have been pervasive subjects in artistic practice. Human Rites will present works such as 15th century devotional polychrome statues of Mary and 16th century altarpieces alongside works by renowned contemporary artists. This juxtaposition of works circumscribes the timelessness of rituals, expressed historically and anthropologically in religious, as well as other contexts.

Works of art in this exhibition also reflect both the subconscious and premeditated human need for rituals in our every day lives. Votive works by Janine Antoni and Marina Abramovich survey the ceremonial aspects of womanhood; Rirkrit Tiravanija’s Buddha figurines describe the devotional offerings that people manufacture for their gods; collected items by artists like Mark Dion, John Beech, and César Trasobares investigate form, the found object and performative aspects; Allan McCollum ‘s repetitive series’ reflect the construction of objects as substitutes for the real object. Ai Wei Wei uses the bicycle as both symbol and found object in the construction of a monumental totem form. Artists in the exhibition include: Thomas Hirschhorn, Priscilla Monge, El Anatsui, Erwin Wurm, Mark Dion, Christian Boltanski and Cesar Trasobares, and others.

Curated by Silvia Karman Cubiñá, Bass Museum of Art Executive Director and Chief Curator, and Steve Holmes, Adjunct Curator, Bass Museum of Art. This exhibition is the second of three exhibitions in The Endless Renaissance series at the Bass Museum, that began with the exhibition The Endless Renaissance in 2009 and will conclude with a publication in 2012.

Florida International Wine Challenge 6/24-25/10

6th Annual Florida International WIne Challenge The Palms Resort and Spa Miami Beach June 24th & 25th The Wine Marketing Group
www.fIwc.Net

The 6th Annual Florida International Wine Challenge (FIWC), Florida’s leading professional wine competition, will host its 2010 edition on June 24 and 25, at the luxurious Palms Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida. Once again, the FIWC will bring together a wide group of respected and infuential wine industry professionals, including wholesalers, restaurateurs, retailers and journalists from across the United States as well as internationally to taste hundreds of wines.

This has a major advantage for wineries seeking to increase their presence in Florida, America’s largest wine market behind California. With total consumption in excess of 56 million gallons and retail sales approaching $2 billion, Florida is also the nation’s fastest growing wine market. Wineries from 16 countries including Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Austria, Brazil, Chile, France, Germany, Italy, Lebanon, New Zealand, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, United States and Uruguay submitted their wines in the 5th annual edition for an opportunity to win one of the coveted medals awarded by the FIWC tasting board.

Founded in 2004, the FIWC offers domestic and international wine producers an invaluable and cost-effective opportunity to have their wines put in front of a prestigious group of individuals intimately associated with fne wine. The FIWC remains focused on providing participating wineries with invaluable unbiased feedback that they can use to increase their sales in America and the state of Florida thanks to a unique list of benefts offered to medal winners.

The proceeds from the Florida International Wine Challenge will beneft two very worthwhile charities. We are proud to work with and support both the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation and the Melanie Finley Ovarian Cancer Foundation. After the professional tasting conducted behind closed doors, the wines from the 2010 FIWC will open to the trade, media and general public to give them an opportunity to test their palates against the participating panelists. This event will also further support our charitable partners.

Gold & Silver Medal winners will be featured in the 2010 edition of the Miami International Wine Fair, October 16 and 17. These wines will shown poured at the VIP section of the Fair. The timing for this is perfect; it will be just as people are beginning to consider their holiday wine purchases.

FIWC will facilitate distribution services for companies without representation in Florida to be able to take advantage of all the benefts offered. Regional and national wine, lifestyle and entertainment publications will feature full-page advertisements listing all Gold medal winners in the months following the event.

FIWC’s PR agency with offces in Miami and Orlando will manage the event’s communication campaign and promote the competition’s results regionally, nationwide and internationally.
