It’s all about romance and the Big Band sound when the South Florida Jazz Orchestra brings their swinging ways to the Tina Hills Pavilion for a free concert on Friday, February 12, 2010 at 5:30pm. The orchestra is an amazingly tight ensemble with bouncy swing and big jazz sounds – a musical treat for the ear and a dance treat for the “swinger” in you. Miami’s own Nicole Henry joins the orchestra for a little romance from the Great American Song book. Her sound described as ‘sensual and romantic,’ is a perfect accompaniment for a glass of wine under the stars. Presented by MIAMI DDA.

Un_Mute Presents He Said, She Said Tour 2010 at Parkwest Nightclub 2/5/10

This Friday, February 5th, for one night only, Parkwest Nightclub opens it’s doors to host the Miami stop of “He Said She Said” tour brought to you by Un-Mute, featuring two of dance music’s most innovative artists, Alexi Delano and Camea for over 10 hours of non-stop madness.
A veteran of the global dance scene, Alexi Delano has been tearing up dancefloors for over two decades now. This Chilean-born, Swedish-raised studio perfectionist was part of the first wave of Swedish techno producers to originate of out that country in the early 1990s, including Adam Beyer and Joel Mull. With dancefloor devastators such as “Would You?”, the acid house classic “Believe Me”, and recent fave “Echolocation” (released on Richie Hawtin’s Plus 8 imprint), Alexi’s sound bridges the sometimes vast gap between the worlds of house and techno.
Starting her musical career as a classically-trained pianist and clarinet player, Camea, described as a fusion of “Seattle cool and Brooklyn edge” has been taking the techno and dance world by storm. From small, underground clubs to crowds numbering in thousands, Camea is recognized for her intelligent, fun music selection and outgoing stage presence, which has earned her a valuable reputation worldwide. She is known for her extended DJ sets, sometimes playing up to 8 hours or more, a rare thing these days. As head of her own label, Clink Recordings, Camea’s productions, such as the hit, “Voiding The Fill”, have found their way into the bags and laptops of Richie Hawtin, Magda, Loco Dice, Pan-Pot and many others.
Joining these two titans this evening will be local stars Dsan Powell, Mario Liberti, and Tuki Romero. Doors open at 10 PM sharp.

The Wallflower Gallery Organizational Meeting – We Need To Move 2/1/10

From Flash at Wallflower Gallery
The Wallflower Gallery Organizational Meeting 02-01-10
WE NEED TO MOVE

Hello, Everybody, how’s it going? I wanted to reach out and see what we can do together to save and revitalize The Wallflower Gallery. This is a group project, so if we want to have an artistic and creative community space in Miami, The Wallflower Gallery can be that platform.

I was recently informed by the landlord that he plans to tear down the building as soon as possible – he mentioned April, but I think we can delay it if we can get some money to him. This money will buy us the time to transition smoothly.

For almost 13 years, The Wallflower Gallery has stood as a place for musicians to play, for poets to share their poems, for visual artists to display their pieces, for independent film makers to showcase films and videos, for actors to act, as well as host a larger assortment of creative showcases. In addition, we have worked with a variety of community organizations to help with local issues, programs for young people, alternative transportation, animal rights, environmental causes, marijuana laws reform, secular humanism, electoral campaigns and many other causes. Even now as we are struggling to keep the business alive, we are giving support to the people of Haiti and we have hosted a collection event – overall it is about compassion. Now it is time to focus a campaign on The Wallflower Gallery.

I am calling for an Organizational Meeting on Monday, February 1 – 7:00 p.m. to discuss what we can do to bring ideas together. I will lay out the details of the situation and see what we as a group can do with suggestions. Bring your cash, checkbooks and credit cards to contribute some financial support. Donations can also go through PayPal on our website – www.wallflowergallery.com – other information will be posted there as well. If we don’t get the financial resources to make this happen, it won’t work.

Now the large task at hand is to generate money to cover the expenses in the current location and find a new location that will have to be set up to meet the needs of the business. In addition, there needs to be an accounting of the inventory and make sure that the items get back to the various artists and any balances due are covered.

I would like to take this opportunity to change the current dynamics. We need to create an active Board of Directors who can work together to organize the various aspects of The Wallflower Gallery and establish a better system to manage the whole operation. Part of this includes establishing a non-profit organization to work with tax-deductible donations.

The Wallflower Gallery brings to the table a strong talent base, a hefty database of connections, a good reputation, lots of experience and a kick-ass sound system. This is the starting point for the new phase of The Wallflower Gallery.

If The Wallflower Gallery fades, there is not another business of its kind waiting in the wings. We are not a simple CD store, art gallery, coffee shop or venue. We are more than those elements and as a community center we have always reached out to younger people to include them and feature their talents.

We have had people from all over the world come to The Wallflower Gallery and remark how unique and cozy the space is. People are always saying that there is nothing in Miami like it. At the same time, they wish they had a place like this where they lived.

This is our opportunity to come together and make something happen that will enrich our community in many ways. We are here to represent South Florida and our creative and progressive spirits, so let’s make it happen!

Let’s see what we can do together. More information will follow.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
Thank you for your effort.
PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD & GET OTHERS INVOLVED
Hope all’s well.
Enjoy

Haiti Mizik Relief Concert at Bayfront Park 100% Proceeds to American Red Cross 1/23-24/10

South Florida’s Music Community Responds to the Haiti Crisis with the “Haiti Mizik Relief” Concert at Bayfront Park
Saturday, January 23rd & Sunday, January 24th

100% of donations will go to The American Red Cross for relief of the earthquake-devastated country.

A group of event producers, musicians, community leaders and activists have leveraged their network to quickly organize a 2-day Haiti Mizik Relief Concert at Bayfront Park’s Tina Hills Pavilion on Saturday, January 23rd from 4pm-10pm and Sunday, January 24th from 2pm-8pm . The 100% benefit concert will collect a suggested $10 minimum donation at the door with all proceeds going directly to The American Red Cross for the immediate relief needs of Haiti. The benefit concert offers Miamians a chance to be together, listen to great music and raise desperately needed aid.
Miami’s community and the world have felt a deep sense of responsibility and urgency to donate their money, time and talent in the wake of the Haiti tragedy. Sadly, the concert lineup includes musicians who have been personally affected by the tragedy losing close relatives and waiting desperately to connect with loved ones in the devastated island nation.

The Haiti Mizik Relief Concert will musically mirror the diverse rhythms of Miami’s music community, featuring a plethora of Miami-based top Haitian, Latin Funk and World Music groups. Confirmed to appear are legendary Haitian Tuco Bouzi & Dixie Band performing along with Kapi & Yves Abel of Tabou Combo, Fredy of Top Vice, Jacky Ambroise of Strings, Ralph Conde of Nu-Look. Jan Sebon & Kazak International, Locos Por Juana, DJ Le Spam and The Spam All Stars, Rara Rock, Empress Addi & The Breeze, Jean P Jam, Papaloko & Lolay Mistik, Suénalo, Afrobeta, Conjunto Progreso, Jahfe, and DJ Pauer. Key leaders of both the Haitian and Miami community are also scheduled to appear.

The Haiti Mizik Relief Concert is produced on a not for profit/volunteer basis by The Rhythm Foundation and La Juana Productions, working closely with a group of musicians, artists and producers. Community support has been instantaneous and includes Epiphone, who has generously donated an Epiphone guitar that will be raffled off at the event and Bevinco of Miami has stepped in to provide for production needs. The Knight Foundation has also agreed to match donations up to $5,000. Media partners Miami New Times and WDNA 88.9FM have also agreed to sponsor the benefit concert.

Kraft
“Trees give us shade, fruit, flowers, medicine, oxygen… and paper. We were asking ourselves where the soul of a tree converted into paper could be hiding. One thing occurred to us: make the folds sing. This gave us some sounds that led us to notes for a primary musical scale, the tone of which, once unfolded, magically rebuilt the rustling of the leaves in the trees, the murmur of waves on the seashore, the crackle of fire or the thunder of a summer storm. No longer can we put off the need for a playful and vital spectacle that will simply deal with our love for things and people. Quite simply, letting us move on, without artifice or ambiguities without great pretensions. And that is what gave rise to Kraft, like a primary idea, like a kid’s thought, by pilling up paper and cardboard for a big game”.

eMERGE trade show is having its 1st annual event, which will be held in Miami, Florida on April 27 and 28th, 2010. The show will be held at the beautiful Hilton Miami Downtown, overlooking the intracoastal waterways and downtown Miami. eMERGE targets retailers that are in search of for the hottest apparel and clothing companies an outlet for the world to view their artwork.

eMERGE is an innovative fashion trade show for upcoming and emerging brands, to showcase their collections to the best boutiques and retailers. Most conventional trade shows do not focus their attention on independent companies that are yearning for exposure in the fashion market. eMERGE is here to assist these brands in growing their business to become the next big “IT” FACTOR. Brands attending eMERGE are breaking barriers and aren’t afraid to take risks to be a recognizable force in the market, and therefore, they will….”ARISE AND CONQUER”

Founded by two individuals who understand and have been in the same position as the brands that will attend eMERGE, so they understand their positions and know that they want to prosper if given the opportunity to do so. One of the founders runs a clothing company and knows how much is needed to run an effective brand. Constantly being put in a position to come up with obscene amounts of funds that was unobtainable to gain exposure. eMERGE will allow clothing companies to showcase their goods in a Metropolitan city for a low, cost effective price. Retailers will be introduced to brands that are usually overlooked at major trade shows. eMERGE will give them both a platform to meet in order to grow their businesses; to bring what is hidden into plain view.

eMERGE is pleased to announce that a portion of all proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society and Kids off Streets.

As its has become the tradition, we will present a stellar lineup of your favorite local DJ talent, with music by Oscar G, Patrick M, Louis Puig, Lazardi, Maurizio + Danyelino, Dsan Powell, Radamas, Knowledge and Meta4 all night (and morning!) long. As in other years and in keeping with our tradition of giving back to our loyal customers, this will be the least expensive pre-sale ticket in town, starting as low as $25.00 with Open Bar before 12am (Online Only)… It’s is our of way of saying thanks for another year of your loyalty and support! As a last-minute addition to the madness, we are proud to welcome Germany’s own Martin Buttrich for a true live performance in the Techno Loft. Ever the accomplished studio wizard, he’s produced pop (The Sugarbabes), Italo house (Sounds of Life) and progressive (over one hundred collaborations with Timo Maas). He’s even been nominated for a Grammy (remixing Tori Amos ‘Don’t Make Me Come to Vegas’). But it wasn’t until 2006 that Buttrich came to prominence under his own name, releasing 12”s on Four:Twenty, Poker Flat and Carl Craig‘s Planet-E (‘Full Clip’). As of late, Martin has been deep in the studio with fellow German and recent devastator of the Terrace, Loco Dice.
Patrons will also enjoy a complimentary open bar from 10 PM until the ball drops at midnight… Ring in the New Year in style as Space roars into it’s tenth year of operation as the US’s number one dance music club! Buy your tickets now! For Tickets or VIP Tables click below:

Description:

The Food for Life Network (FFLN) AIDS Marathon/Half-Marathon was founded in 2008. The marathon seeks to raise HIV/AIDS awareness in the South Florida community and beyond while simultaneously raising money for Food for Life Network, Inc.

Food for Life Network, Inc. is a 503[c](3) non-profit organization that provides groceries, meals and nutritional education to eliminate malnutrition and starvation in men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS in Miami-Dade County. They are committed to delivering services with compassion and confidentiality, to fostering clients’ dignity and independence, and to enhancing clients’ quality of life.  Since 1987, Food for Life Network, Inc. staff and its volunteers have provided over 1.5 million meals and groceries to people living with HIV/AIDS at no cost to their clients. FFLN is a part of Community AIDS Resource, Inc. (aka “Care Resource”).

Because FFLN, Inc. never charges its clients for their services and because the services we provide are so crucial, we look to socially responsible individuals, businesses, and community leaders like you for help You may not know it, but for as little as $40.00, you can help to feed one homebound client for a week or provide 21 meals for one food bank client. The larger the donation, the greater good we can do. FFLN, Inc. provides other services in addition to its meals on wheels program. For example, FFLN, Inc. clients have access to dieticians and nutritionists. Available services include a BIA testing for muscle mass, fat and water in the tissue, and an individual health eating habit survey. These assessments help FFLN, Inc.’s dieticians and nutritionists construct new diets to improve their clients eating habits. FFLN, Inc. also provides food safety tips which are crucial to HIV/AIDS clients who often have to alter their diet to tolerate their medicine and maximize their strength and overall health.

In addition to making a contribution to this very important cause, you can register as an individual or, if you are a business owner, register your company to participate in the upcoming marathon/half marathon. You can also volunteer your time, talents and/or professional services.

The FFLN AIDS Marathon is hosted annually by ING Miami Marathon. This year the marathon is January 31, 2010. Our goal is to raise $50,000. Fundraising will continue until goal our reached. You can make a direct donation online using a debit or credit card or download the donation form and mail in your donation. Please make checks payable to: FFLN AIDS Marathon 2010. All contributions raised by the marathon go directly to FFLN, Inc., which allocates 85% to client services. All contributions are tax deductible.

This is a curved wall, and these unique capabilities have generated television and print coverage for Mia at Biscayne and made the venue a “must see” hotspot in Miami. To view one piece of coverage: http://www.aubreyaquino.com/2009/09/mia-biscayne/. The launch event will feature the following agenda: a firsthand experience of Mia at Biscayne and their benefits from using Mindstorm’s interactive surfaces as well as an introduction to Blackstone and their nation-wide sales and service capabilities, a presentation on Mindstorm’s newest products (Vortex, Aurora and and Supercell), customer case studies in hospitality, retail and exhibitions/events and finally a demo of new software for self-ordering and “mix your own” drinks. Located in the heart of Downtown Miami, Mia at Biscayne was created as a reflection of the warmth, and diversity Miami represents. A tantalizing blend of color, mixed layout, bold fixtures, and the highest quality of audio visual capability, the venue is a culmination of four unique concepts intricately meshed to comprise one entertainment complex. Lounge, restaurant, sidewalk café and club, this location was created with the guest in mind. During the holidays, Mia will open its doors also featuring special signature cocktails (just for the season) as well as delicious creations by Executive Chef Gerdy Rodriguez. Complete with the highest standard of culinary elements, the menu at Mia was created to reflect all that is Miami, its people and picturesque landscape. When guests dine at Mia they will experience “concept dining” at its best. The location and menu were designed to create a full visual and palate-pleasing experience that will provoke social intimacy and conversation. Mia is where a potpourri of hues, spices, flavors, and cultures meet, as is Miami. http://www.miabiscayne.com.

THE BORSCHT FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES ITS SIXTH ANNUAL EVENT AT THE OLYMPIA THEATER AT GUSMAN CENTER IN DOWNTOWN MIAMI

Miami, Florida – The Borscht Film Festival has grown. With the support of the Miami World Cinema Center it has become one of the strongest community film events in South Florida. The festival will take place Saturday November 28th at the Olympia Theater at Gusman Center in Downtown Miami (174 East Flagler Street, Miami, FL 33131). Doors will open at 7:00 PM, films will begin promptly at 8:00 PM. The event is free and open to the public.
Following past years format, the festival will feature the Borscht Select Short Films program consisting of short films submitted by Miami filmmakers under the age of thirty.
In an effort to support local creative talent, the festival will present the “CCCV Stories” a series of five short films commissioned by the Borscht Film Festival, and co-financed by the Miami World Cinema Center, from over 100 submissions. Based out of the MWCC, the Borscht Film Festival selected each film because it tells a different distinctly Miami story that takes place in a specific Miami neighborhood and was created entirely by emerging South Florida artists.
Following the Gusman Event will be the opening of the Oolite Visual Art Showcase, an art gallery located at 22 East Flagler St. Miami, FL 33131 that will showcase the best of Miami-based visual artists under the age of 30, and will feature live performances by local bands. The Oolite Visual Art Showcase will run through Art Basel.
The Borscht Film Festival will also host world-premiere screenings, lectures in partnership with the University of Wynwood (including a Michael Bay Symposium), and other events from November 28th through December 1st, however tickets to these events will only be announced and distributed on November 28th at the Gusman Center.
Together these events showcase Miami’s burgeoning local independent film scene, and is the place to see new works by emerging Miami filmmakers in a wholly original environment that will transform downtown Miami.
The Borscht Film Festival is possible due to generous support from the Miami World Cinema Center, DWNTWN, Downtown Development Authority, Miami-Dade Cultural Affairs, and many others.
To find out more, visit www.borscht.info or email contact@borscht.info or call 305-433-5848.

About the Borscht Film Festival
The Borscht Film Festival, started in 2004 by New World School of the Arts high school students, is a yearly event that believes in Miami’s potential to host a world-class independent film industry and are doing their part by inspiring collaboration between members of an idiosyncratic generation that was born in the 80’s and came of age with the city itself. By keeping this “Miami New Wave” of talent working on the city at least once a year, they believe they can build global interest for the wholly original film movement and keep filmmakers from abandoning Miami for larger markets. It is Borscht’s belief that Miami has the cinematic richness of character to compete with Woody Allen’s New York, Fellini’s Rome, or Godard’s Paris.
About Miami World Cinema Center
As the first non-profit film studio in Miami, MWCC’s mission is to provide tools for filmmakers and ensure an increased production of high quality films and digital media in South Florida. MWCC was one of the 31 recipients of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation Knights Arts Challenge Grant of $750,000 over four years. MWCC has been operating since January of 2009 from its offices in Wynwood under the direction of Patrick de Bokay and Joshua Miller. The cinema center develops programs in the areas of education, talent search, and communications and has a unique line-up of projects in various stages of production and development.

Space Miami Presents Halloween Midnight Terrace Marathon with Boris 10/31/09

space_halloweenrevised
In what has become an annual tradition, Space Miami is upping the ante once again with a massive Halloween event.
This Saturday, October 31st, Space welcomes back legendary NYC DJ/Producer Boris for a murderous marathon of monstrous music. Devastating dancefloors in his home base of New York City for years now, this Russian ex-pat has recently taken to the world stage, with deadly sessions in places as far reaching as Ibiza, Las Vegas, and of course his “Miami home” of Space, where he can truly stretch out, and take the crowd for a mesmerizing journey through all things house. And for this weekend, the house gets positively haunted as only Space can do it, with intense decorations, visuals, costumed dancers and performers, and many more surprises. Rounding out The Terrace musical lineup of course will be Space residents Patrick M and Louis Puig…
Continuing their dedication to the cutting-edge of dance music, the Techno Loft crew is proud to welcome Guy Gerber to the decks, for his first-ever appearance at Space Miami. Known around the world as one of the leading purveyors of the techno and tech-house sounds, Gerber has grown from his roots in Tel Aviv, to one of the most in-demand artists in the world, playing from Ibiza to Tokyo and everywhere in between. Joining Guy this evening will be Germany’s Tom Clark. Tom has been on the forefront of his nation’s world-renowned techno and tech-house scene. With an uncompromising style, Tom’s performance will fit the holiday mood at Space. And as always, residents Maurizio + Danyelino and Dsan Powell will be on hand to round out the madness…
Guests attending this weekend are strongly encouraged to go all out and show up in costume for this evening…

The Space Techno Loft Presents Magda & Troy Pierce 8/29/09

TechnoLoft-May23
As if Desyn Masiello on The Terrace wasn’t enough, Space and the Techno Loft are extremely proud to present two more legends, continuing their dedication to cutting-edge and underground sounds.
This Saturday, August 29th, the Techno Loft plays host to two of the top DJ/Producers in the genre, Magda and Troy Pierce.
Hailing from Poland, Magda (real name Magdalena Chojnacka), got her start in the mid 1990s in New York’s then-vibrant dance music scene. With all forms of dance music gaining headway, she rapidly grew with it, gaining notoriety both on the decks and in the studio for her uncompromising sound. Changing attitudes in the Big Apple led her to depart in 2003, bringing her to her current home of Berlin. It was in Berlin where her current sound began to develop. Partnered with Troy Pierce and Marc Houle, she began to take advantage of the new possibilities present in production and DJing techniques brought upon by affordable new hardware and software. Eventually catching the attention of Richie Hawtin, Magda soon began to release material on Hawtin’s influential Minus label. Of course, never complacent, Magda soon established her own label, Items and Things, where she continues to produce to this day.
Joining her also this evening will be Troy Pierce. A longtime collaborator of Magda’s, Indiana native Pierce took his influence from the dynamic scenes of Chicago and Detroit. With Chicago as the stronghold of house, and Detroit the birthplace of techno, Troy’s style naturally has been hard to classify, with both of those genres and more, making it into his record bag. Soon after, with a stopover in New York in the late 1990s, Troy eventually moved to Berlin, where he began to work with Magda and Marc Houle. Encouraged by the two, Troy readily adapted his style to the new flavors and technology coming out of Germany’s capital, with an insatiable desire to satisfy the city’s notoriously picky club culture. This all paid off in 2006, with Troy hitting the road with Magda and Richie himself for a massive US tour, which solidified his name as one of the “go-to” guys in the techno and minimal scene.
And of course, the night will be rounded out by Techno Loft residents Maurizio + Danyelino and Dsan Powell.

On Thursday, August 27th, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., members of South Florida’s leading networking organizations for young professionals will gather to celebrate the third “GET CONNECTED”, an event which offers young professionals a platform to network and build relationships in our community. The event will take place at Ecco Pizzateca & Lounge in Downtown Miami. This event is open to all young professionals.

The co-host sponsors for the August Get Connected include:

• Coconut Grove Jaycees (JCI) – an organization of young men and women (age 21-39) with a large and diverse membership from all over Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. “Jay-Cees” simply stands for Junior Chamber, which is part of the worldwide federation of 5,700 chapters in 110 countries around the world known as Junior Chamber International (JCI). The Coconut Grove chapter has been providing community service, business opportunities and leadership training to their community since 1976. Regionally, leaders such as Tom Gallagher (Florida Insurance Commissioner) and Alex Penelas (Former Miami -Dade County Mayor) are part of the Coconut Grove Jaycess’ alumni body. Internationally, past members have included U.S. Presidents (Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Clinton), UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, Bob Hawke (former Prime Minister of Australia), Jacques Chirac (former President of France), Ted Turner (founder of CNN), Larry Bird (Boston Celtics), Poul Schluter (former Prime Minister of Denmark) and Chen Shui-bian (10th president of Taiwan) among others.

• Connect Florida – The first statewide organization of young professionals connecting Florida’s leaders in the 21 to 35 age range. The innovative new program, created by Leadership Florida, assists young professionals in making a positive impact on our state.

• Coral Gables Rotaract Club – a nonprofit service club designed for young professionals and sponsored by the Rotary Club of Coral Gables. Coral Gables Rotaract is part of a global network of over 7,000 Rotaract clubs in about 163 countries, all centered on community service, international understanding, leadership training and professional development.
• Middle Eastern American Professionals Association (MEAPA) – MEAPA is a community based civic and cultural organization that originated in South Florida. They have been keeping South Florida’s Middle Eastern American community informed, involved and connected, since 2005. MEAPA is open to all people, professionals and students of Arabic and Non-Arabic Middle Eastern Heritage. Anyone is welcomed to join the many great events, programs and activities.

• Miami Science Museum (@MIASCI) – Art and science converge on the last Thursday of every month at the Miami Science Museum. Young professionals, science aficionados, art enthusiasts and other 21-45 year olds come together for a happy hour alternative in a non-traditional setting. Enjoy open bar, hors d’oeuvres, exhibits and the sounds of renowned South Florida DJs all night long. Every month their focus changes to include a short program dedicated to an art form, from dance to poetry to the visual and culinary arts.

• Ronald McDonald House of South Florida – the members of the young professional group of the Ronald McDonald House, located on the grounds of Jackson Memorial Hospital, work together to engage in the lives of families with sick children.

• Young Urban Professional Alumni (YUPA) – is a dynamic organization of Florida International University (FIU) graduates who are 39 years old or younger. YUPA provides a venue for young alumni to interact and network with each other for their professional/personal development. FIU has approximately 60,000 alumni who fit the South Florida YUPA criteria. The group was formed in 2006 and consists of young alumni professionals looking to advance in their careers and make the most out of life. This unique group stands apart and shares common interests that many young alumni have today. YUPA is open to FIU young alumni of all majors and every profession.

• YoPros – YoPros is an activities group for young professionals in Miami. They are a community of adventurous young professionals who seek to enjoy their valuable free-time engaging in fun, meaningful and interesting activities with like-minded people. YoPros offers their members the opportunity to participate in daily activities, such as, events, sports, fitness, culture, self-help/wellness and how to network and develop professionally in either their own activities or in conjunction with other outstanding organizations.

“This event certainly provides young professionals, like me, the opportunity to meet one-on-one to discuss the current state of our industries and discuss how we can collaborate to not only advance in our field but also help our community prosper,” noted Anthony Bayona, president of the Ronald McDonald House of Miami young professional group.

Young professionals in the South Florida community are urged to assist the third GET CONNECTED event. This event is free of charge. For more information, please contact Natalie Leon at (786) 537-0751, Cristina Tacoronte at (305) 788-0808 or Allison McCormick at (305)764-5377.

The Terrace Afterhours Presents Misstress Barbara 7/25/09

TechnoLoft-May23
Continuing their dedication to cutting-edge sounds, the Techno Loft crew at Space Miami brings another femme fatale of the techno and house scene to the decks this Saturday, July 25th, the legendary Misstress Barbara.
Sicilian-born Misstress (yes, there’s four “s” in there…) Barbara, having emigrated to Montréal at an early age, appropriately started her music career as a drummer at the age of 12. Soon after, trading in her sticks for a pair of 1200s and a mixer, she carried her affinity for percussive sounds over into her DJing, delivering a rhythmic, relentless, and uncompromising style in her sets and in her productions. With hits like “I’m Running”, and “Dance Me To…” tearing up the global dance charts and finding their way into the laptops and CD cases of fellow DJs and producers around the world, Barbara, long an underground favorite, is breaking through into the mainstream of dance culture.
With her appearance this weekend at the home of dance music in the United States, Space, the sky’s the limit for the Misstress…

FAME would love to thank all of you whom have come out these past two weeks for our ‘rehearsals’. It’s been a blast. We hope we haven’t been responsible for too many “BRIs”, that’s Beer-Related Injuries, for the uninitiated.
We’ve worked out the kinks, the cast can dance without falling on their faces (accidentally) and our crowd can operate the beer funnels without making embarrassments out of themselves. So, we’re ready to do this for real, this coming Friday.
FAME is proud to present the Grand Opening. The madness starts at 11 PM sharp, this Friday July 17th. Check out live performances by our cast of characters, including sing-alongs, fire dancing, and drinking contests, along with musical orchestration by our favorite DJ-in-residence, Nikolas.
RSVP for complimentary admission at rsvp@famedowntown.com or by going to the official FAME website.

“Irreversible an International Art Project is an ongoing exhibition exploring the perception of art and the identity of the artist through history and, in our contemporary society”

ABOUT US
Irreversible is an international art project founded in 2005 by Norelkys (Noor) Blazekovic, to portray how in recent decades artists have progressively expanded the boundaries of art, as they have sought to engage in an increasingly pluralistic environment. The creating and understanding of art, are likewise no longer grounded in traditional aesthetics. It is an honor for us to invite each of you to be part of our upcoming Summer event “IRREVERSIBLE 100 Most” to participate in the freedom of developing new models and instruments from everyday life, as Irreversible evolves in its efforts to become a creative medium for the better understanding of the complexities of our contemporary existence. I take great pride in sharing our success with you.
“IRREVERSIBLE 100 Most” will be held and sponsor by the prestigious CIFO (cifo.org), the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation Miami, FL USA, a non-profit organization, established in 2002 by Ella Fontanals Cisneros and her family to foster cultural exchange among the visual arts. Cifo is dedicated to the support of emerging and mid-career contemporary multidisciplinary artists who are challenging the established boundaries that define much contemporary art today.

DETAIL EVENT SCHEDULE WILL BE AVALIBLE SOON!
Thank you all for your great support!

The Premiere Of Fame Downtown 7/10/09

fame
We at FAME would like to thank everyone for showing up to our Sneak Peek this past Friday evening. It was amazing, astounding, enthralling, and of course messy and downright dirty!
And this weekend will be no exception. We’ve ironed out the kinks and we are ready to rock Downtown this Friday evening. On July 10th, we’re proud to present the Premiere of FAME.
As we showed you this past Friday, FAME is not going to be a typical nightclub experience. With live performances by our talented cast of characters (and yes we really mean “characters”) worthy of a Hollywood epic, well, if the lovechild of Fellini and Quentin Tarantino got together to make a movie, FAME keeps the audience entertained all night long with said live performances, interactive experiences, and classic drinking games worthy of the cheesiest summer camp knockoff flick. And rounding out the entertainment this evening will be none other than our versatile musical maestro, Nikolas.
The madness doesn’t stop early either, as we’re proud to present the premiere of Disco Sh*t, the new Saturday morning afterhours experience to hit Downtown Miami.
Starting at 4 AM, FAME gets down to serious business and explores the dark and dirty side of Hollywood, presenting some of the latest twisted house sounds to come out of the studios of talented DJs and producers the world over.
We’re proud to launch this new experience with none other than one of Miami’s newest DJ/Production duos, the Cocodrills. These youngsters have been tearing up the charts as of late, with a body of work reminiscent of talents much older. Check them out this Saturday morning on the decks at FAME…
RSVP for complimentary admission at rsvp@famedowntown.com or by going to the official FAME website.

CCEMIAMI PRESENTS: VIDAS MINADAS, 10 AÑOS
On Friday June 26, CCEMiami will open the exhibition “Vidas Minadas, 10 años” that will visit Miami after being presented in New York as part of the celebration of the International Day for the Sensibilization on Land Mines and the Assistance in Mine Action at the UN headquarters.

“Vidas Minadas, 10 años”, was initiated in 1995 by Gervasio Sánchez, a winner of the prestigious Premio Internacional de Periodismo Rey de España 2008, and is supported by the Spanish Agency of International Cooperation for the Development (AECID), Intermón Oxfam, Manos Unidas, Médicos sin Fronteras and DKV Seguros.

The show presented at CCEMiami has been compiled in a book and follows up on the personalized stories of the first photographic project initiated in 1997 that documented the dramatic aspect of the victims of anti-personal mines in countries such as Bosnia, Mozambique, Cambodia, El Salvador, Iraq, Angola, Afghanistan, Nicaragua or Colombia. In this new exhibition, we can see the evolution of some of the victims portrayed in 1997 that have established a personal relationship with the photographer. The project aims to bring light to this serious problem and the situation of its victims so as not to forget. “Vidas Minadas” was presented for the first time in the UNESCO headquarters in December of 1998 on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, when Gervasio Sánchez was named “UNESCO’s Special Peace Messenger.”

At present, only 151 countries have signed the Ottawa Treaty and there are 167 million mines still active in 78 countries worldwide. The cost of manufacturing a land mine is less than 3 Euros, but the cost of searching, deactivation and destruction is more than 750 Euros. Human rights organizations remind that the problem still needs a resolution and that is imperative to continue working to help the victims and the deactivation process.

In 2008, the show visited Paris on the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights after touring in several cities in Spain.

For more information, please visit: www.vidasminadas.com

The Cultural Center of Spain (CCEMiami) is a non-profit organization dedicated to education, arts and culture that aims to promote and foster cultural cooperation, local creation and fostering dialogue of space and exchange by means of a yearly continuous programming.

Activities at the Cultural Center of Spain are sponsored by the Spanish Agency of International Cooperation to the Development (AECID), Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners.

Schedule is subject to changes. All activities have limited seating. For more info visit our webpage www.ccemiami.org.

Dwntwn Events Free Concert DJ Le Spam and the Spam Allstars 3/13/09

Friday March 13 @ 5:30 pm
Downtown Concert Series

Friday, March 13, 2009 Miami favorites DJ Le Spam and the Spam Allstars play a free concert for the Downtown Miami Concert Series, filling the air with their ever-changing blend funk grooves, Latin poly-rhythms, hip-hop scratching, obscure old-school soul, oddball retro recording references, muscular horns, sweet Cuban melody and much, much more. The show presented by the Miami DDA at the Tina Hills Pavilion in Bayfront Park is a sunset happy hour and as always food and drinks are available. The fun starts at 5:30 pm. This is going to be an amazing show and we’d love to see you there!

About DJ Le Spam & the Spam Allstars:
The group blends improvisational electronic elements and turntables with Latin, funk, hip-hop and dub to create what they call an electronic descarga. It’s not a known genre. It’s hard to describe. It attracts many types of people. But as they look out and see people dancing salsa, next to break-dancers, and audience that drives for hours to catch a show — they know something very special is going on. This is a sound that has been developed and influenced by all the cultures present in Miami, and the backgrounds of the individual members of the band.

IKF LATIN AMERICAN ART AUCTION 2008
For the fourth year, the auction attracts some of the most prestigious artists in the world

The International Kids Fund (IKF) Latin American Art Auction 2008 will be held on Tuesday evening October 14 at CIFO – Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation at 1018 North Miami Avenue in Miami. This auction is well respected in the art world because of the caliber of contemporary international art it offers. Known in the art community as “The Collector’s Auction” last year, it attracted more than 500 serious collectors from all over the world. This year 100 prominent artists have donated their works and the selection of art this year is more exciting than ever.

What makes the IKF LATIN AMERICAN ART AUCTION important is that the event benefits the International Kids Fund, a program of Jackson Memorial Foundation that pays for critical surgeries, treatments and necessary care for children with life threatening conditions. IKF has helped hundreds of children since its inception in 2002—and not a day goes by when IKF learns of some child who needs to be treated at Holtz Children’s Hospital. And—Who Can Say No? IKF cannot.

According to Hernan Carrara, former Managing Editor of Arte al Dia International magazine and responsible for the art selection since 2005: “While the great Latin American masters are fetching increasingly high prices at international auctions, many contemporary artists from Latin America are creating works that are promptly snapped up by U.S. and European museums and collectors. In Miami, local and international collectors will have the opportunity to buy art works from artists that may be seen at major art fairs, but with one important distinction: exceptional prices.”

Rosy Cancela, chairman and founder of the auction says, “By purchasing art at our Auction, collectors will walk away with amazing art, and also affect the lives of very sick children.”

Miami’s vice? City at bottom in volunteering
By MATT SEDENSKY and DAVID CRARY

MIAMI (AP) – Blame it on the traffic. Or the number of new immigrants. Or the allure of the beach. Whatever the reason, Miami has secured the bottom spot – No. 50 among major U.S. cities – in new rankings of the percentage of adults who volunteer.

Nationally, the volunteer rate fell in 2007 for the second year in a row, to 26.2 percent, according to the Corporation for National and Community Service, which is releasing its report Sunday. It showed Miami with a volunteerism rate of 14.5 percent, replacing Las Vegas in last place among major metropolitan areas. To be fair, the study found 620,000 volunteers were recruited in Miami last year, more than 60,000 over the previous year. And many local nonprofits say they have more volunteers than ever. But there’s no denying how far Miami lags behind other cities, particularly No. 1 Minneapolis-St. Paul, with a 39.3 percent rate.
The study notes that Miami’s poverty rate and average commute times are slightly higher than the national average, while other factors influencing volunteerism – home ownership and education level – are slightly lower. Robert Grimm, director of research for the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), said another factor was at play, what he calls “the leaky bucket” of volunteerism. Nationally, about one in three people who volunteer in a given year do not do so the following year. In Miami, the rate is six in 10.

“There’s interest in volunteering in a lot of people but they’re just not staying with it,” Grimm said. Rapid turnover is a problem across the country, and one of the reasons the national rate dropped again in 2007 after reaching 28.8 percent in 2005. In all, 60.8 million Americans 16 and older performed roughly 8.1 billion hours of volunteer service in 2007. On the bright side, the report concluded that “volunteer intensity” is increasing, with 34 percent of volunteers contributing more than 100 hours of service in a year – the highest rate for that category since 2002. On the worrisome side were mounting concerns that economic woes – including high gasoline prices and job insecurity – would be deterrents for some would-be volunteers.

“With more people in need – losing houses, losing jobs – there are more people to serve,” said CNCS board chairman Stephen Goldsmith. “You have fewer people helping and more people needing help.” By region, the Midwest had the highest volunteer rate at 31.1 percent, followed by the West at 26.1, the South with 24.7 and the Northeast at 23.4. By state, Utah had the highest rate, 43.9 percent, followed by Nebraska, Minnesota, Alaska and Montana. Nevada had the lowest state rate, 17.7 percent; Florida and New York were the next lowest. Minneapolis-St. Paul, Salt Lake City and Portland, Ore., were the highest-ranked big cities, while New York City and Las Vegas were the lowest-ranked after Miami. Among 25 mid-size cities, Provo, Utah, came first with a 63 percent rate – the highest of any jurisdiction in the report. The high volunteer rates in Utah and several of its cities are attributed in part to civic-mindedness among the state’s many Mormons, but Bill Hulterstrom, president of the Provo-based United Way of Utah County, said other factors also were at work. “I believe that people here really feel like they can make a difference,” he said. “We do not wait for others to ‘fix’ our problems or neighborhoods.”

The CNCS, an independent federal agency, used Census Bureau data to determine its state and city rankings, which are based on three-year averages for 2005 through 2007. In Florida, Harve Mogul, president and CEO of the United Way of Miami-Dade, said Miami’s low ranking wasn’t surprising because of the number of new immigrants. “We have such a high number of recent immigrants who come from countries without the same organized philanthropy found in the United States,” he said. “We’ve found that as people spend more time in the United States and see the value of philanthropy and community service, they are more likely to donate their time and money.” Still, Hands on Miami, which coordinates volunteer efforts for the local United Way, reported a marked increase in the number of volunteer hours: from 58,232 in its 2006-07 tally to 70,000 in 2007-08.
Lynn Heyman, who heads the volunteer program at Miami Children’s Hospital, said she has 600 active volunteers at any given time, more than ever. But the hospital must hold orientations twice monthly to keep volunteers streaming in to replace departing ones. “I don’t think the days of people volunteering with an organization for years and years are still with us,” Heyman said.

Volunteer coordinators at other agencies point to other possible reasons. Ani Olmeda Gonzalez at Mercy Hospital said the tough economy was forcing some would-be volunteers to choose paid work instead. Charlotte Donn at YMCA of Greater Miami noted the city is home to many transients. And Cathy Agosti of VITAS Innovative Hospice Care noted what many others repeated. “Busy lives,” she said. “Busy lives.”

Matt Sedensky reported from Miami and David Crary from New York.

The two prepare to lead a panel at the annual Southern Comfort conference, a yearly event created for transgender individuals.

A panel discussion with Southern Comfort director Kate Davis, Lola Cola and Tobias Packer of Equality Now will follow the screening. The discussion will be moderated by Rhonda Mitrani.
