KCC Productions and the Van Dyke Cafe present Silvano Monasterios and the Fourth World Ensemble 12/22/11

KCC Productions and the Van Dyke Cafe present Silvano Monasterios and the Fourth Silvano2011World Ensemble
Thursday, December 22, at 9 PM
The Van Dyke
846 Lincoln Road
South Beach

For more information, call 305-534-3600 or visit thevandykecafe.com.

Voted “Best Jazz Musician in Miami (2009)” by the Miami New Times, pianist-composer Silvano Monasterios hails from Caracas, Venezuela. Silvano has performed with a number of important artists including Ira Sullivan, Terumasa Hino & the World Jazz All-Stars, Othello Molineaux, Dave Liebman, Melton Mustafa, Marc Johnson, Donald Byrd, Alan Harris, Paquito D’Rivera, Arturo Sandoval, Nathen Page, Randy Brecker, Sammy Figueroa, Paul Wertico, Mark Egan, Shakira, David Lee Roth, and Nestor Torres.

In 1998, Silvano was voted “New Artist of the Year” at the Hennessy Cognac Jazz Search in New York City. 1998 also marked the release of his first CD, Roads Not Taken, which received outstanding reviews in the U.S. and Latin America. In 2006, his new recording, Fostered, was released. Fostered features all original compositions, including the award-winning “Avila”.

Silvano composed, performed & co-produced two songs, including the title track, of the 2008 GRAMMY-nominated album, “The Magician”, by Sammy Figueroa & His Latin Jazz Explosion. This wonderful CD was nominated as “Best Latin Jazz Album of the Year”.

The Fourth World Ensemble, emerging in 2007 from Monasterios’ desire to experiment with the fusion of Latin Rhythms, World Music and Pure Jazz, features Monasterios on piano, accompanied by percussion, drums, bass and saxophone. The ensemble performs all original music composed and arranged by Silvano. This year saw the release of their new CD, Unconditional, on Savant Records. Exhibiting an insatiable appetite for challenge and change, Silvano has recorded eight new and imaginative compositions. While this latest work is likely destined to be classified as “Latin Jazz” with its assortment of indigenous percussion instruments and rhythms, it is totally devoid of the Latin clichés often encountered in pseudo-Latin jazz. Instead, it showcases an artist with a complete understanding of his complex Venezuelan roots, who is aware of the Austro-Germanic-European compositional heritage and who, at the same time, is steeped in the great American jazz tradition.

Activities will again be centered around 2 beachside hotels plus the legendary Mai-Kai restaurant, which is celebrated its 55th anniversary in 2011. But months of feedback from Hukilau fans resulted in several changes: More events at The Mai-Kai, a more budget-friendly hotel, and a more laid-back schedule with time to enjoy the company of friends and South Florida’s abundant beaches and beauty.

One thing that hasn’t changed, however, is The Hukilau’s commitment to high-caliber entertainment and educational symposiums. Among the 2012 highlights are: Nashville surf/spy/space supergroup The Martian Denny Orchestra; a symposium on the mysterious Zombie cocktail by influential mixologist and author Jeff “Beachbum” Berry; a hands-on symposium by tattoo artist and historian Paul Roe; and several savage performances by acclaimed burlesque star Angie Pontani.

Potential Amendments at ArtCenter with Jenny Brillhart Opens 1/7/12

Errors Exposed at ArtCenter with Jenny Brillhart – Opens
January 7, 2012 at 7:00 p.m.
ArtCenter/South Florida’s main gallery
800 Lincoln Road at Meridian Avenue
Miami Beach

ArtCenter/South Florida presents Potential Amendments, an exhibition that embraces error and highlights structure, form and mark-making. With paintings by Jenny Brillhart and Vincent Hemphill, and sculpture by Moira Holohan, the three local luminaries have built their showcase around process, unplanned errors and reconstruction.  The opening event is free and open to the public, and is generously sponsored by KIND natural whole nut and fruit bars. Potential Amendments will be on view through February 19, 2012. For more information, please call 305.674.8278 or visit the website at www.artcentersf.org.

“Our mission to promote excellence in art and provide an edifying experience through artistic processes is what makes visiting ArtCenter special to the resident artists, exhibiting artists and to the public,” said Kristen Thiele, ACSF Artist Liaison. “Jenny Brillhart will be shown as pushing her work through process to discover new levels of representation. Her search for new modes of delineation is the underlying strength in her concept for Potential Amendments.”

Brillhart creates dialogue between made and found spaces using traditional methods of still life, studio practice, photography and paint as starting points for her works.  By adding and subtracting from these mediums, she balances ideas of beauty, form, representation, structure and narrative.  A native of New Hampshire, Brilhart has exhibited with several noteworthy galleries worldwide, including Kuckei +Kuckei Gallery in Berlin, Roemerapotheke Gallery in Zurich and David Castillo Gallery. She currently works and resides in Miami.

The contemporary work of Vincent Hemphill creates dialogue by exposing failures in the painting process.  Reworking and correcting layers, he explores the possibilities of transformation and the self-reflexive nature of decision-making and creative methods.  After graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Parsons School of Design in 1991, Hemphill participated in numerous group exhibitions with established art collectives in South Florida including Art Miami, Dorsch Gallery and Fred Snitzers Gallery.  He will be unveiling a variety of mixed media works on wood panels with Potential Amendments.

Multimedia artist Moira Holohan thrives on the evidence of time and process. Building, altering and layering consecutive digital still prints from original video footage, Holohan draws, paints, scratches or cuts into the prints.  After re-photographing the manipulated images, she composes video animations.  Holohan’s reinforcements offer viewers tactile evidence of her creative process. The artist received her Masters of Fine Arts from Hunter College in New York in 2007 and has since participated in over 20 exhibitions in New York, Miami and Los Angeles.

House Nightclub Coming February 2012 To Wynwood Arts District

House Nightclub Coming Soon To Wynwood Arts District

Tech-savvy playground to be first of its kind in Miami’s “SoHo” neighborhood.
www.housenightclub.com

HOUSE, a 9,000-square-foot multi-room venue modeled after a home of the future, is slated to become the first nightclub in the Wynwood Arts District with its February 2012 opening. As the brainchild of established designer and nightlife impresario Mark Lowe, whose projects include the acclaimed Living Room nightclub in Fort Lauderdale and 13 other venues around the globe, HOUSE will merge technological prowess with style and substance to create a truly unique addition to the burgeoning neighborhood.

“HOUSE will be more of a living, breathing art installation than a nightclub, which is only fitting considering its location,” says Lowe. “My goal is to change the way Miami sees nightlife, and because this is a ‘house,’ all the naughty things you do behind closed doors will be revealed.”

The loft-like former warehouse space will feature state-of-the-art sight and sound installations such as 360-degree panoramic projections, 3D architectural mapping, holograms and cyber technology unparalleled in the world. In order to evoke the warmth and intimacy of an actual home, kitchens will be bars; showers in VIP areas; beds with bed sheets; cocktail waitresses dressed only in crisp men’s T-shirts; and pajama-clad bouncers, even sexy little surprises in the nightstand tables.

HOUSE will be the latest and largest nightlife destination to open its doors in Wynwood, which has been unofficially dubbed the “Miami version of New York’s ‘SoHo’ reincarnation, circa 1960s.”

The 2012 Champion of the Community Spirit is SAP International. SAP International is being honored for their charitable work as a corporate citizen working towards a greater good for our community. Headquartered in Walldorf, Germany, SAP is the market leader in enterprise application software. Founded in 1972, SAP (which stands for “Systems, Applications, and Products in Data Processing”) has a rich history of innovation and growth as a true industry leader. SAP applications and services enable more than 176,000 customers worldwide to operate profitably, adapt continuously, and grow sustainably.

SAP’s story is one of a steady rise from a small, five-man operation headquartered in southwest Germany’s Rhine-Neckar region to one of the world’s largest independent software providers and an employer of more than 47,598 people in over 50 countries worldwide.

SAP’s philosophy is that the power of their people, products, and partners unleashes growth and creates significant new value for customers, SAP, and, ultimately, entire industries and the economy at large.

SAP International opened their Latin American division in Miami ten years ago. In 2007, they established a local philanthropic and community relations program organizing volunteers and donating funds to many South Florida non-profits. SAP has donated time and financial resources to Jackson Memorial Hospital, Children’s Home Society, Junior Achievement, and the Cancer Support Community Greater Miami. Their global charitable interests are based in education, healthcare and environmental issues and in 2010 alone; this dynamic and extraordinary company invested $24 million dollars worldwide to those in need.

Their mission is to help companies of all sizes and industries to run better. Their vision is to help the world run better. We think they are achieving that just by their actions in South Florida!

Rounding out this incredible evening is our Mistress of Ceremonies is Diana Gonzalez. Diana was the recipient of the Cancer Support Community Greater Miami’s Champion of the Community Spirit award in 2002 and is also a former host for our fundraiser. She is also the sophisticated voice of our promotional video as Diana has donated her time and talents to our organization for close to a decade.

Diana is NBC 6’s Health Reporter, bringing South Florida the latest news in medicine and health care. A veteran NBC6 WTVJ reporter, she started her career here in 1978 as a news reporter and then worked as a producer for “Montage,” a weekly magazine show. Diana is a proud Gator, having received her Bachelor of Science degree in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Florida. In addition to her education and years of work experience, being a cancer survivor enhances her ability to cover health news. Diana says her biggest accomplishment is raising two wonderful daughters, Gillian and Jackie Durruthy.

KCC Productions and the Van Dyke Cafe present A Celebration of Music of Legendary Jazz Divas featuring Debbie Orta 12/15/11

KCC Productions and the Van Dyke Cafe present A Celebration of Music of Legendary Jazz Divas featuring Debbie Orta
Thursday, December 15, at 9 PM
The Van Dyke
846 Lincoln Road
South Beach

Featured are: Pete Wallace, piano, Nicky Orta, bass, John Yarling, drums, and Ed Maina, woodwinds.
For more information, call 305-534-3600 or visit thevandykecafe.com.

Born in New York, Debbie performed American music until moving to Miami, where her Spanish roots drew her to the Latin sounds of the city where she performed for several years with a salsa band called “Clouds”. She was later offered a spot as lead female vocalist with an American show band at Bally’s Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. It was there that she later auditioned for the main showroom at the Sands, featuring Jose Luis Rodriguez (“El Puma”). She was hired on the spot as a backup singer on his world tour, also playing flute parts in the show for several years. During this time she performed as singer/dancer with another Latin heartthrob, Chayanne. Back home to raise her two children, Debbie has returned to her jazz roots, enriched by years of travel in the U.S., South America, Mexico, Canada, Australia and Europe. She has shared the stage with notable jazz musicians such as Mike Orta, Othello Molineaux, Turk Mauro, Jim Gasior, Brian Murphy, Carlos Averhoff, and Silvano Monasterios.

Now based in South Florida, Debbie Orta is accompanied by an outstanding quartet of esteemed jazz musicians. Since its inception, “The Debbie Orta Jazz Quintet” has performed at Jazz Festivals and clubs including the SunTrust Sunday Jazz Brunch Series, Hollywood Beach Concert Series, Arturo Sandoval’s Jazz Club, The Seminole Hard Rock Casino, Jazziz, The Van Dyke Café in South Beach, and is a regular performer at the world famous Setai Jazz Brunch on South Beach, among others. She is a featured performer in the prestigious Sunshine Jazz Organization of Miami. Debbie was the only South Florida jazz artist invited to perform at South Florida’s premier music festival, SunFest 2009, opening the Sunday Jazz Brunch for jazz fusion group, “Spyro Gyra”.

Debbie recently presented her 2010 seminar, entitled, “Jazz Gals” at Nova Southeastern University in Davie, Florida; a retrospective of the great female jazz vocalists of the 20th Century and today. The multi-media seminar included a slideshow, video clips, discussion and a live performance by Debbie accompanied by a pianist.

Debbie and her smokin’ band perform a terrific jazz repertoire from the Great American Songbook, as well as Brazilian and Latin jazz arrangements, and jazz/funk feels flexing her voice over several octaves. Debbie’s swinging jazz and smoky ballads are always intriguing, whether classic or contemporary, sad or joyful.

AER Management is pleased to announce that MADAI will be having her Video Premiere for her new single “Mayday” and will also perform Live on stage.

Madai, the newest member of Mr. 305 Inc. and is the quintessential Miami Latina, born in Guantanamo, Cuba and raised in America. At the tender age of 9, she immigrated to America and began to immerse herself in American pop culture, which in result helped her learn English. A year later she began writing poems in English and Spanish, which quickly transitioned into songwriting.

Madai has joined the family of Mr. 305 Inc., the first major record label owned by International Superstar Pitbull, founded to focus on the development of new talent. Mr. 305 Inc., is also the home of renowned artists El Cata, Nayer and Sophia del Carmen among others.

Madai writes her own lyrics, which are often bilingual and based on her experiences. She has a natural ability for capturing a moment and expressing its emotion in a song. A fan of all music, she is not tied to one style, rather her songs resonate with themes and fusions mixing Gospel, Hip-Hop, R&B, Latin, Country, Dance and Pop.

Madai’s lyrics reflect the experience of girls, living in a cross-cultural digital world. Her songs blend cultures, mixing her Americana youth experiences over strong hip-hop beats. Her music is a merging of ethnicity in the common spirit of today’s youth. She easily transitions from one culture to another, and blends these two worlds in her life and in her music.

Madai is not just an exceptional singer/songwriter; she is a talented dancer as well. Her natural dancing ability is an outgrowth of her Cuban roots having been taught how to dance salsa and merengue by her father at a very young age.

Madai is currently working on her highly anticipated debut album working with world-renowned producers like Marc Kinchen, Keith Morrison, Farah Achour, Nicki Noelle, Maffio Alkatras and Dave Siegel, known for producing hit tracks for Beyoncé, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, T.I. and more! During this creative process, Madai has also had the pleasure of co-writing tracks with famed writers Carrie Furman, Farah Achour, Nicki Noelle, Micah Powel and Michelle Trumpler.

Art Miami, LLC. is pleased to announce its confirmed exhibitor list in association with the launch of Art Wynwood, taking place President’s Day Weekend, Feb. 16 – 20, 2012. Held in the spacious 100,000-square-foot Art Miami Pavilion, which attracted more than 55,000 attendees during the 2011 edition of Art Miami, the inaugural five-day International Contemporary Art Fair will showcase a compelling array of cutting-edge, contemporary and modern artwork by both emerging and established artists from more than 50 galleries, including “the flying murals of Wynwood” commissioned by the district’s own Tony Goldman.

Art Wynwood will feature paintings, photography, sculpture, art video and new media, conceptual art and urban street art by 500 artists from 13 countries: Argentina, Austria, Canada, China, France, Germany, Ireland, Mexico, Spain, the Netherlands, Venezuela, United Kingdom and the United States. With representation from 100 cities from around the world, including 50 across the U.S., Art Wynwood will further distinguish the Wynwood Arts District as a leading cultural destination for acquiring contemporary art. A VIP Private Preview will be held in celebration of the opening on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012.

“This is a very exciting time and opportunity for the Wynwood Arts District, as well as Miami, our organization, exhibitors and the international community of art collectors who vacation or call South Florida home during President’s Day Weekend,” said Nick Korniloff, Director and Partner of Art Wynwood. “Art Wynwood will further ignite the Wynwood Arts District urban revitalization by providing a high quality, standalone International Contemporary Art Fair that will garner international recognition for the district and deliver a positive economic impact for many years to come.”

Capturing the essence of what the Wynwood Arts District and the Miami Art scene have to offer is paramount. Notably, Tony Goldman, who has been a driving force in the evolution of the arts and warehouse district of Wynwood, will exhibit what he describes as “the flying murals of Wynwood” in the fair’s VIP Lounge. Under his guidance, six 8’ x 24’ murals by international artists, including a Retna work from the Janet and Tony Goldman Collection, an existing piece from How & Nosm, as well as new murals from DAZE, Aiko and Futura, will be installed. Goldman will also be an integral part of Art Wynwood’s soon-to-be-announced host committee, which will be comprised of industry leaders in the art, design and media worlds from Miami and beyond. He states, “We applaud the organizers of Art Wynwood for their decision to launch a new art fair in Miami next month. This is a wonderful example of how Miami – and specifically Wynwood – has evolved into a year round arts destination.  I think I speak on behalf of the entire Wynwood community in welcoming and supporting Art Wynwood.”

61st Annual Beaux Arts Festival of Art 1/7-8/12

61st Annual Beaux Arts Festival of Art
January 7-8, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Grounds of the Lowe Art Museum
University of Miami Campus
1301 Stanford Drive
www.BeauxArtsFestival.org

Admission and Parking: Free

The 61st annual Beaux Arts Festival of Art will bring more than 200 fine artists to the grounds of the Lowe Art Museum on the University of Miami campus during the weekend of January 7 and 8, 2012.

Widely recognized as one of the region’s most popular outdoor art exhibitions and a South Florida tradition, the festival attracts over 25,000 visitors annually and offers works in 11 mediums for a variety of budgets. This year, artists hail from 30 states and abroad.

Admission and parking are free. Proceeds benefit the Lowe Art Museum, which will be open to the public all weekend, and support bringing children from low-income schools on cultural field trips to the museum.

The festival will feature live music, children’s entertainment – including free art activities for children ages 4-12 in the “Art Park” – and food from Miami’s gourmet food trucks, making this event not just for art enthusiasts but for families as well.

Children who attend the festival will receive a copy of the signature children’s coloring book introduced last year in honor of Beaux Arts’ 60th anniversary that features important works from the Lowe’s world collections and a museum map for children.

In addition to artists selected by a panel of jurors, visitors will find the “Student Artist Showcase,” featuring more than 100 pieces from Miami-Dade middle and high school students on display inside the Lowe Art Museum. A celebration honoring the students’ art will take place at 6 p.m. on Thursday, January 5, 2012, at the Lowe.

The festival also reaches beyond artists and visitors. Funds raised help underwrite “Hands On!,” Beaux Arts’ signature program for children from underserved schools. ”Hands On!” introduces these Miami-Dade students to the world of art and museums via field trips to the museum. Additional funds raised are used for Lowe Art Museum exhibitions, improvements and acquisitions.

The festival was originally called the “Clothesline Sale,” as Beaux Arts volunteers used clotheslines to display the works of local artists in front of the Lowe. Six decades later, the all volunteer-run Festival of Art has evolved and is considered one of the top outdoor fine art shows in the country.

Sponsors for this year’s festival include Mercedes-Benz of Coral Gables and Mercedes-Benz of Cutler Bay.

power2give.org, an Easy to Use, Online Fundraising Platform Debuts in Miami on December 14th
The Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, Arts & Science Council and Knight Foundation introduce power2give.org, connecting people to cultural projects

On Wednesday, December 14, 2011, the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the Arts & Science Council (ASC) located in Charlotte, N.C. and with generous support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, is launching www.power2give.org, a new fundraising platform to support arts and cultural projects in Miami-Dade County.

Local arts organizations are embracing innovative and creative new ways to engage their audiences and secure more resources. power2give.org, created by ASC, offers a direct way to connect local arts and cultural projects with individuals and corporations interested in turning specific needs into realities. Cultural organizations’ listed needs describe clearly identified projects – for example, instruments for children in a youth orchestra or costumes for an upcoming theater production. People visiting the site can pick a need that interests them and direct their giving to making that exact project come to fruition.

The site’s Miami launch is going to feature funding needs for dozens of projects from myriad and varied organizations. power2give.org debuted in Charlotte, N.C. in late August 2011 under ASC’s auspices, and has already generated more than $200,000 in directed giving in that community. The Miami portion of the site is housed within the same URL, and can be accessed by selecting “Miami” from the drop-down box at the top of the home page.

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has joined the Department of Cultural Affairs and ASC as a founding sponsor of power2give.org, providing each community $100,000 in matching donations to the first $100,000 in contributions made in Charlotte and Miami through the site.

“This new platform gives people a personal connection to the organizations that create culture in our communities,” said Dennis Scholl, Knight Foundation’s vice president/Arts. “power2give.org also strives to engage new audiences and donors – meeting them where they are, which is increasingly online.”

power2give.org, conceived and developed by ASC, is borne out of the recognition that future funding of the cultural sector requires increasingly diversified and innovative means, and is in direct response to current trends in philanthropy. Giving from high net worth individuals is down 71% from 2007 according to the Center on Philanthropy. Meanwhile, 2010 trends indicate an increased number of gifts with smaller average gift sizes, further growth in online donations and a strong desire from donors to see where their gifts go. The site also creates a closer relationship between donors and the organizations they support.

“Miami’s philanthropic patterns and opportunities, like much of the rest of the United States, continue to shift and evolve, and power2give.org is one example of how the cultural funding support model must adapt in order to attract the resources needed to fuel our cultural industry,” said Adolfo Henriques, chairman of the Miami-Dade County Cultural Affairs Council. “Individuals and businesses have told us plainly that when they know the exact use of their contributions and can see the tangible impacts of their investments on making particular cultural projects possible, they feel greater senses of confidence and satisfaction.”

Michael Spring, director of the Department of Cultural Affairs stated, “There are compelling needs within every cultural organization. power2give.org allows groups to describe those needs genuinely and specifically to their audiences and prospective donors, and to give those donors a broader understanding of just what it takes to make arts and cultural programs possible. It builds a deeper sense of involvement in and reality about the creative process for everyone.”

Currently, non-profit organizations that have received funding from the Department of Cultural Affairs within the past five years can post projects needing up to $10,000 on power2give.org. Organizations promote their projects to individuals through a variety of print, electronic and social media channels.

Projects have up to 90 days to achieve their funding goals. The Department of Cultural Affairs and ASC are assessing the possibility of extending the opportunity to artists and other non-profits to post projects on the site in the future.

Knight Foundation supports transformational ideas that promote quality journalism, advance media innovation, engage communities and foster the arts. The foundation believes that democracy thrives when people and communities are informed and engaged. For more, visit KnightFoundation.org.

The Arts & Science Council is a non-profit organization in Charlotte, N.C. that builds appreciation, participation and support for the arts, science, history and heritage in Charlotte-Mecklenburg. ASC works to shape a vibrant cultural life for all through fundraising, grant making, cultural planning, public art, capacity building and community engagement. For more, visit ArtsAndScience.org.

The Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council develop cultural excellence, diversity and participation throughout Miami-Dade County by strategically creating and promoting opportunities for artists and cultural organizations, and our residents and visitors who are their audiences. The Department directs the Art in Public Places program and its board, the Art in Public Places Trust, commissioning, curating, maintaining and promoting the County’s art collection. The Department also manages, programs and operates the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center, a campus of state-of-the-art cultural facilities in Cutler Bay dedicated to presenting and supporting excellence in the arts for the entire community. Through staff, board and programmatic resources, the Department, the Council and the Trust promote, coordinate and support Miami-Dade County’s more than 1,000 not-for-profit cultural organizations as well as thousands of resident artists through grants, technical assistance, public information and interactive community planning. The Department receives funding through the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners, The Children’s Trust, the National Endowment for the Arts, the State of Florida through the Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Arts Council, and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Other support and services are provided by TicketWeb for the Culture Shock Miami program, the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau, the South Florida Cultural Consortium and the Tourist Development Council.

The 3rd edition of Miami International Art Fair (MIA), one of America’s most exciting mid-winter contemporary art fairs, will return January 12-16, 2012 with a dynamic ensemble of 28 international galleries representing artist from Europe, Latin America, United States and Asia. The Fair will feature paintings, sculpture, photography, design, fine art glass, video and installations from a bevy of established museum collected artists as well as some of today’s most promising emerging artists.

The Fair will relocate aboard SeaFair – the 228-foot megayacht venue – docked at 100 Chopin Plaza in Miami’s premiere downtown entertainment district and will include a waterside installation and sculpture exhibition in Bayfront Park.

Focusing on projects that reflect on universal subject matters, Hardcore Contemporary Art Space (Miami) will present work of local and international artists who use innovative and provocative mediums to foster questions about our post-contemporary society. At MIA the gallery will bring works by the renowned Latin American artist, Gastón Ugalde. He is called “the most important living Bolivian artist” by the Konex Foundation in Argentina and is often referred to as the “Andean Warhol” by art critics. Ugalde is also known as “the enfant terrible” of the Bolivian Art Scene and gained global attention with his controversial series of “coca paintings “. Gastón has been experimenting with coca in his art since the 1980s and will exhibit a selection of coca works at the Fair. The gallery will also feature Venezuelan artist Milton Becerra. Becerra is known for addressing cultural and environmental concerns through his mixed media works and has a unique technique of weaving organic materials – a skill learned during time spent with Amazonian tribes in the early 80’s. He has been exhibited in prestigious museums worldwide including Museum of Modern Art, Paris; Ludwig Museum, Aachen; and the Museum of Modern Art, Rio de Janeiro.

Cernuda Arte (Coral Gables) specializes in the exhibition and sale of Colonial, Early Republic, Vanguardia, and Modern master Cuban paintings, as well as fine artworks by contemporary artists. At MIA 2012, the Gallery will exhibit a collection of established and emerging Cuban artist including Wifredo Lam, Agustin Cardenas, Mario Carreno and René Portocarrero among others.

Black Square Gallery (Miami) has flourished in the Miami art scene since the Gallery was founded in 2010. They will exhibit works by Emilio Garcia, Pablo Lehmann, Victor Sydorenko, Taisha 3,14, Zhanna Kadyrova, Anibal Vallejo, Jorge Chirinos Sanchez and Taro Hattori.

Kavachnina Contemporary (Miami) will exhibit emerging, mid-career artists both local and foreign in various media and will feature a large scale sculpture installation in MIA’s sculpture garden at Bayfront Park. Among the sculptors exhibited will be Dutch stainless steel sculptor Ronald Westerhuis, South American artists John Angee and Cecilia Lueza, Spanish sculptor Joan Barrantes, Italian sculptor Maria Cristina Carlini, American artists Gilbert Boro, Claudia Klein and local Miami artist Jorge Fernandez.

Evan Lurie Gallery (Carmel) will feature works by renowned Italian sculptor Oriano Galloni, whose stunning figures in marble, wood, and aluminum range in height from 6 to 30 feet. A monumental 30-foot high marble sculpture entitled “White Moon” has been generously donated by the artist, and is expected to fetch an estimated $2.5 million at auction, with the proceeds from the sale benefitting the non-profit Arts for India. Galloni has also designed and donated 30 small-scale sculptures for the launch of Arts for India at the Guggenheim Museum New York on April 26, 2012. The Evan Lurie Gallery will also feature new works by sculptors Brad Howe, Carlo Borer, Kevin Barrett, and Gino Miles, as well as two-dimensional pieces by Jorge Santos, Victor Wang, Alexi Torres, and Jason Paul Bennett.

Art Link International (Lake Worth) will present a collection of Modern Masters as well as emerging artists. The gallery will feature artwork and a live painting performance Friday evening by celebrated graffiti artist John Matos – better known as Crash. Crash will donate one of his works to benefit the Marli Foundation for Ovarian Cancer during a benefit for the Foundation on Saturday, January 14th aboard SeaFair. Among the additional works exhibited will include a 1979 original Joan Miro, as well as original paintings by Robert Rauschenberg and Frank Stella, two original Botero drawings from the 1980’s, a Venetian glass exhibit of Dale Chihuly circa the 1990’s and an important painting, Dame mit Tomate, by painter Paul Klee completed in 1930, as well as works by Jimmy Ernst, Charles Green Shaw, Jim Ceravolo, A.R. Penck and Tom Wesselmann.

From the far reaches of South Korea, Ejung Gallery (Seoul) will present works by artist Lee Kyu-Hak. Inspired by the work of Vincent Van Gogh the artist uses mixed media including styrofoam, magazines, newspaper and Korean traditional paper, hanji, to create his textured works. In addition, the gallery will present work by sculptor Moo In-Soo.

An exhibition of artists Frank Hyder and Florence Putterman will be presented by Projects Gallery (Philadelphia). Hyder has participated in more than 150 group shows and has had over 80 solo exhibitions throughout North, South and Central America, including 8 individual exhibitions in New York City.

The three-time Grammy-nominated Cuban music group Tiempo Libre is one the hottest young Latin bands today. Equally at home in concert halls, jazz clubs and dance venues, Tiempo Libre’s Miami-based members are true modern heirs to the rich tradition of the music of their native Cuba. Classically trained at Cuba’s premiere conservatories, today, the group is a hit in the U.S. and abroad, celebrated for its incendiary, joyful performances of timba, an irresistible, dance-inducing mix of high-voltage Latin jazz and the seductive rhythms of son.

The group’s new Sony Masterworks timba recording, My Secret Radio, was released May 3, 2011. The album pays homage to Tiempo Libre’s teenage years in Cuba, a time when the government forbade its citizens to listen to American music and Russia had pulled its support from the island. Inspired by their Afro-Cuban tradition, but eager to catch the new trends and sounds coming from the U.S., Tiempo Libre’s members would fashion homemade antennas and secretly listen to the music pulsating from Miami radio stations at night. These secret radio sessions fueled Tiempo Libre’s dreams of living in America, free to perform their songs and build the careers they wanted while helping them gather the strength that it took to leave it all behind – families, friends, a country, a life – to pursue those dreams. The CD is their tribute to the many powerful voices, including Michael Jackson, Chaka Khan, Gloria Estefan and Earth Wind & Fire, that rocked their world. The album features guest performances by jazz singer Rachelle Fleming and reunites Tiempo Libre founder Jorge Gomez with the legendary Cuban songstress Albita.

Tiempo Libre’s first recording for Sony Masterworks, Bach in Havana, was nominated for a Grammy award for “Best Tropical Latin Album” and featured tracks with Paquito D’Rivera and Yosvany Terry. The CD, a fusion of Bach with Afro-Cuban rhythms, reflects the duality of Tiempo Libre’s childhood days studying classical music and nights spent playing timba music. Released in May, 2009, the album received airplay on more than 200 radio stations, was hailed by Latin Jazz Network as “a landmark recording in the sense that Miles Davis’s Kind of Blue was approximately 50 years ago” and was selected as a best pick in new Latin music by The Miami Herald. The group performed “Tu Conga Bach” from the CD on the October 27, 2009 Dancing with the Stars. In conjunction with the release of Bach in Havana, the family behind Bustelo Café – for the first time in 80 years – changed its Bustelo Café coffee can to feature Tiempo Libre with a free music download

In addition to their performing and recording careers, the members of Tiempo Libre are particularly committed to the sharing of their rich musical traditions through outreach and educational activities and have participated in artist in residence programs at Michigan State University and Interlochen Academy. The group has also become known for its inspiring classes on rumba, Latin jazz and traditional Cuban music, designed to reach audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
Tiempo Libre is: Musical Director Jorge Gomez on keyboard; Raúl Rodríguez, trumpet; Leandro Gonzalez, congas; Tebelio (Tony) Fonte, bass; Armando (Pututi) Arce, drums; Joaquin (El Kid) Diaz, lead vocal; and Luis Beltran Castillo, saxophone & flute.

Ideobox ArtSpace and Saludarte Foundation 12/10/11

Rodrigo Echeverri. Astilla en el ojo
Saturday December 10, 7 – 10
In its newly renovated space in Wynwood
at 2417 N. Miami Ave.
Miami, FL 33127

Ideobox ArtSpace and Saludarte Foundation cordially invites you Rodrigo Echeverri. Astilla en el ojo

Rodrigo Echeverri Calero. Astilla en el ojo
Echeverri’s artwork is constructed with various types of mediums from acrylic/oil paints to wood dye on canvas, medium density fiberboard, and wood. With these materials, he creates the illusion of celestial bodies of boxes colliding and floating into larger entities, referring to an idea of chaos linked to moments of crisis and destruction. It is a gesture that paradoxically has been compiled from geometric order. His approach evokes different perspectives of suspended boxes depending on the angle from which they are viewed. His work eliminates the boundary between painting and sculpting as it unilaterally displays two-dimensional and three-dimensional points of view. Echeverri’s interest in texture and form begins with a cube shape that is ordinary, yet he uses colors such as red to create depth and illusion.
