In celebration of Cinco de Mayo, Feeding South Florida® – the leading hunger-relief organization in South Florida – will host “Tacos & Tequila” at its Pembroke Park Warehouse on Saturday, May 4, from 2–6 p.m. The outdoor festival will feature tacos, tequila cocktails, live music and family-friendly activities to support Feeding South Florida’s mission to end hunger in South Florida.

Guests will enjoy an assortment of delectable tacos and delicious tequila cocktails crafted by some of South Florida’s finest bars, restaurants and food trucks. Participating tequila and culinary partners will compete for the titles of “Best Taco” and “Best Tequila Cocktail.” Featured tequilas include Teremana Tequila, Moët, Hennessy and Palma Cerveza and featured food partners include bartaco, Chef Chris Valdes, Rainbow-licious Deelites and Feeding South Florida’s Community Kitchen.

The family-friendly event will feature a dedicated kid’s zone, a magical margarita garden and a raffle for the chance to win prizes. Attendees will also enjoy live entertainment, music, salsa dancing and more.

Each general admission ticket is all inclusive of food and drinks, Kid’s Zone, live music and entertainment, and salsa dancing. The VIP ticket includes a private VIP area, premium food and beverages, the margarita garden and more.

Currently, in South Florida, there are over 1.2 million food insecure individuals, and one in nine individuals in South Florida remain uncertain about where they will get their next meal due to inflation, the strained supply chain, rising fuel prices and increased housing costs among other factors.

Proceeds raised during the event will allow Feeding South Florida to fulfill its mission to end hunger in South Florida by providing immediate access to nutritious food, leading hunger and poverty advocacy efforts, and transforming lives through innovative programming and education.

American Heritage Schools [ahschool.com], the top-ranked PK3 through 12 college preparatory school in Florida, is proud to announce its annual “K-9 Cause: An Evening of Art” auction benefiting the Broward Sheriff’s Foundation’s Retired Canine Relief Fund, on Saturday, April 20.

Everyone loves dogs; however, police dogs, or K-9s, are a special breed. Instead of enjoying the pampered pet lifestyle, K-9s dedicate their entire lives to working daily to protect and serve citizens in our community along with their fearless handlers. They are considered law enforcement officers, whose duties include constant training, apprehending suspects, and searching for explosives, drugs, and missing persons.

When the K-9s retire, their law enforcement handlers graciously adopt them and continue to care for them, as these K-9s have become their friends for life. Recognizing that the medical and healthcare for these K-9s can get quite costly, the Broward Sheriff’s Foundation has established the Retired K-9 Healthcare Fund. This Fund pays for up to 50% of the wellness care costs for all retired K-9s from any local law enforcement agency in Broward County.

Inspired by a little boy’s passion for animals and art, American Heritage Schools is raising money to “fund this fund” by selling artistic renditions of these fine K-9s. Jackson Laurie, a sophomore at American Heritage Schools, and his parents Dr. Douglas Laurie and Nikki Laurie-Van Allen have partnered with the National Art Honor Society and the award-winning Fine Arts faculty at American Heritage to create artwork of these very K-9 being honored.

American Heritage Schools, Broward Campus, will be hosting a Silent Auction for these original works of art, as well as a limited supply of prints for sale at our K-9 Cause event. 100% of all funds raised from this event will benefit the Broward Sheriff Foundation’s Retired K-9 Relief Fund.

Strikingly beautiful, visually stunning scenes from marine expeditions around the world by renowned artist, conservationist, scientist and entrepreneur Dr. Guy Harvey are featured in a new exhibition on display at the Miami International Fine Arts (MIFA) Gallery in September.

Dr. Harvey is scheduled to attend the exhibition’s opening reception on Friday, September 3 from 7 to 10 p.m. Much of the original artwork on display is from Guy Harvey’s Underwater World, Dr. Harvey’s fifth book and most recently released memoir. Books will be available for purchase and signing. The reception is free and open to the public and no reservation is required. All 60 original art pieces on display, inspired by Dr. Harvey’s expeditions in the Caribbean, the Americas and Australia, depict dramatic predator-prey interactions with large ocean fish including marlin, sharks and tunas. DJ Missy Jay will launch a U.S. tour that includes several performances in Miami, FL. She’ll perform during Miami Music Week where she has the distinction of being the only female in the lineup.

Miami Music Week is a celebration of music at venues around the city. Missy Jay will also perform at the White Room, Cinema, Eve Lounge, News Lounge, Pelican Hotel and Living Room during the festival. The marathon of electronic dance music takes place during the entire last week of March each year, featuring more than 1,000 artists and music lovers from around the globe.

The Techno Festival venue holds about 10,000 people and Missy Jay will be headlining the event alongside her famous male counterparts. The international DJ will take control of the stage at 5 a.m. for an early morning performance. The DJ always seeks to impart a deeper appreciation of dance music’s history and heritage to her audience.

The Italian-born DJ is always searching for new ways to innovate that surprises and amazes her audiences. Her performances are always a new and unique experience to be savored and enjoyed. Always mindful of her fans, she tries to respond to as many requests for selfies as she can.

Missy Jay’s ascension to festival main stages has been meteoric. After the launch of her JayLand Radio Show, she attained even greater acclaim in the Techno industry. Currently based in London, the DJ has played extensively in the U.S., with stops in Chicago, Miami, Detroit and Montreal, Canada, that has earned her a number of high profile fans – Dubfire has expressed his admiration for the rising star.

Equally skilled as a DJ and a producer, Missy Jay has to date released on prestigious labels and also operates her personal MJM Records label. There’s nobody better suited to closing Techno Marathon on the last night of Miami Music Week than Missy Jay.

Four “houses” compete against one another at Hammocks Community Park in The West End. All will have fun, but there can be only one house at the end sitting on the throne.

Historic Florida Estate of Glenn H. Curtiss Restored After Thirteen Years Sneak Preview

City of Miami Springs and Curtiss Mansion, Inc. announce a “Sneak Preview” of the restored historic South Florida home of famed aviator, inventor and visionary Glenn Hammond Curtiss originally built in 1925. Curtiss, the “Father of Naval Aviation” moved to South Florida from Hammondsport, New York during the land boom of the 1920s. From 1920-1930, Curtiss developed the cities of Miami Springs, Hialeah and Opa-locka, Florida, before his death in 1930 at age 52. Before his untimely passing, Curtiss made a significant impact in the South Florida landscape. His vision of creating three different geographic areas among the cities allowed him to partner with James Bright creating landmarks such as Hialeah Race Track. On Sunday, April 1st, 2012 the community will have the opportunity to a “Sneak Preview” of Curtiss’ home, now a center for education, preservation and inspiration.

The legendary Curtiss Mansion, damaged by multiple fires, has taken thirteen years of perseverance and a true community effort to rebuild the home to its original grandeur. Curtiss Mansion Inc. (CMI), a Florida not-for-profit organization, was established to take the leadership role in restoring the home. “I fell in love with the story of Glenn H. Curtiss, and felt it was my duty to be involved in its restoration and share the stories of all unsung heroes,” says JoEllen Morgan Phillips, President of CMI. “We are also excited by our partnership with Captain Barrington Irving’s STEM academy to be located at the Mansion in Miami Springs.” “The City of Miami Springs is proud to partner with CMI. They have done an outstanding job in the restoration of the Mansion,” says Mayor Zavier Garcia. “Our community can only benefit from restoring this national treasure by our Founder, and we want to share it with the world,” says City Manager Ron Gorland.

The focus of the event is to share mission of the restored Curtiss Mansion as a center for education and a venue of historic significance and beauty. Be one of the first in the country to tour the home of Glenn H. Curtiss and enjoy afternoon music, food and the outdoors with your family, friends and neighbors!
