Mika Rottenberg. Video

As winner of the first Cartier Award at the 2006 Frieze Art Fair, Mika Rottenberg was commissioned to create the video “Chasing Waterfalls: The Rise and Fall of the Amazing Seven Sutherland Sisters.” The video is a glimpse into the lives of seven sisters from the 19th century who captured attention for their extremely long hair with which they built a fortune by selling their unique anti-baldness cure. Invoking the mystical properties of women’s hair, Rottenberg uses a feminist approach to investigate the worlds of economics and production. The legend of the Seven Sutherland Sisters inspired Rottenberg’s multi-channel installation Cheese at the 2008 Whitney Biennial. Mika Rottenberg is represented by Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery, New York.

CCEMIAMI PRESENTS: VIDAS MINADAS, 10 AÑOS
On Friday June 26, CCEMiami will open the exhibition “Vidas Minadas, 10 años” that will visit Miami after being presented in New York as part of the celebration of the International Day for the Sensibilization on Land Mines and the Assistance in Mine Action at the UN headquarters.

“Vidas Minadas, 10 años”, was initiated in 1995 by Gervasio Sánchez, a winner of the prestigious Premio Internacional de Periodismo Rey de España 2008, and is supported by the Spanish Agency of International Cooperation for the Development (AECID), Intermón Oxfam, Manos Unidas, Médicos sin Fronteras and DKV Seguros.

The show presented at CCEMiami has been compiled in a book and follows up on the personalized stories of the first photographic project initiated in 1997 that documented the dramatic aspect of the victims of anti-personal mines in countries such as Bosnia, Mozambique, Cambodia, El Salvador, Iraq, Angola, Afghanistan, Nicaragua or Colombia. In this new exhibition, we can see the evolution of some of the victims portrayed in 1997 that have established a personal relationship with the photographer. The project aims to bring light to this serious problem and the situation of its victims so as not to forget. “Vidas Minadas” was presented for the first time in the UNESCO headquarters in December of 1998 on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, when Gervasio Sánchez was named “UNESCO’s Special Peace Messenger.”

At present, only 151 countries have signed the Ottawa Treaty and there are 167 million mines still active in 78 countries worldwide. The cost of manufacturing a land mine is less than 3 Euros, but the cost of searching, deactivation and destruction is more than 750 Euros. Human rights organizations remind that the problem still needs a resolution and that is imperative to continue working to help the victims and the deactivation process.

In 2008, the show visited Paris on the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights after touring in several cities in Spain.

Imagine Miami Changemaker Conference II Placemaking at Miami Dade College Wolfson Campus 7/18/09

IM_ChangeConf_FrontWeb
How Local Residents Can Create Better Parks, Beaches, Blocks and Other Public Spaces “Placemaking” is Focus of Upcoming Imagine Miami Changemaker Conference II

The second in a three-year series, the Imagine Miami Changemaker Conference II on July 18, 2009 focuses on the power of place. Local residents will learn how to create and sustain the public spaces that build community, from community gardens to family-friendly parks and city blocks. Presented by the Human Services Coalition (HSC), the event will be held in downtown Miami at Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus, in the Chapman Conference Center, from 9:30 am – 5:30 pm. To pre-register (deadline July 10), residents can go to www.imaginemiami.org or call (305) 576-5001.

“By bringing together more than 200 aspiring, emerging and seasoned community leaders from diverse backgrounds, including participants in HSC’s civic programs,” says Imagine Miami director Corinna Moebius, “we’ll cross-fertilize good ideas and practices and inspire people with real-life examples of how residents are transforming local places. We’ll also help people connect with each other and with specific opportunities.”

Participants will learn to use innovative place-related tools and approaches for advocacy, resident engagement and community development, including community mapping and GIS, asset mapping, and placemaking tools developed by Project for Public Spaces (PPS). PPS (pps.org) has worked in 2,000 communities in 26 countries around the world, helping people turn their public spaces into vital community places, with programs, uses, and people-friendly settings that build local value and serve community needs. Hands-on workshops will be led by Cynthia Nikitin of PPS (pps.org), Dwayne Marsh of PolicyLink (policylink.org), Delia Caderno of Partnership for Community Transformation and Jacqueline Sartan of the University of Miami. In the placemaking workshop, residents will break into groups and use the PPS Place Evaluation tool to evaluate specific sites in downtown Miami.

Conference attendees can win $500 for their local place-based project (like a community garden). Local groups have until July 1 to submit a one-page proposal to create/improve a local public space. During the conference, attendees will vote for one of ten semi-finalist proposals. The three finalists will have five minutes each to pitch their project during the conference, with additional time to answer questions from a panel of judges and conference attendees. Judges include Charles Auslander of The Children’s Trust, Kris Smith of the Funders’ Network for Smart Growth and Livable Communities, Cynthia Nikitin and Corinna Moebius.

Funded by The Children’s Trust and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the conference is designed to be family friendly. Eco-educational activities for kids will take place all day, led by Kiki Mutis (Director of the Community Science Workshop at Citizens for a Better South Florida) and environmental educator Sofie Geckler. Near the close of the conference, kids will share their own ideas for better neighborhoods with the rest of the attendees. Parents can bring children 5 and up for no extra cost, and up to 80 parents are eligible for a discounted $5 registration fee if they apply by July 3rd . The regular conference price is $25.

Other conference highlights include a keynote presentation by Cynthia Nikitin, a World Café dialogue on creating family-friendly neighborhoods, hands-on demonstrations of online mapping tools (e.g., policylink.org and the Children’s Trust’s KidsMap), exhibits showcasing local place-related projects, a video Story Booth (courtesy of WPBT’s uvuvideo.org), and a culminating drumming activity led by local artist/activist Lela Lombardo.

Following the conference, participants can continue their connection and collaboration with local changemakers via our “Community Cafes”: neighborhood-based dialogues led by local residents trained in community dialogue techniques. They can also connect via our online civic network (imaginemiami.ning.com), and continue building skills, awareness and connections via HSC’s advocacy and leadership programs and workshops.

About the Changemaker Conference Series
HSC launched its three-year series of Changemaker Conferences (two a year) in response to the success of its 2008 Imagine Miami Summit on Arts, Culture & Civic Engagement, which South Florida residents described as uplifting, connecting, energizing and transformative. The series is part of HSC’s broader strategy to cultivate networks of trust (social capital) and increase residents’ capacity to be catalysts for participatory, community change. They are also an important vehicle for connecting the emerging leaders participating in HSC’s civic programs, including Public Allies Miami-Dade, Parent Leadership Training Institute (PLTI), Advocacy Corps Training (ACT), Neighborhood Leadership Program, Creative Impact and Imagine Miami. Through the civic programs of HSC, single parents, minority youth, immigrants, low-income residents and others have become leaders in their communities.

The conferences build upon each other, and each increases awareness and knowledge of particular techniques, success stories and opportunities. The first conference (April 4, 2009) focused on asset-based approaches (leveraging community strengths); storytelling for social impact; and community dialogue techniques. By 2011, we expect at least 1,000 local residents to become champions for civic engagement and community involvement in South Florida.

A committee of hard-working and dedicated volunteers, interns and contributing HSC staff has been meeting weekly to help Imagine Miami director Corinna Moebius plan the conference. Core volunteers include Sam Van Leer of Urban Paradise Guild, Linda McGlathery of the Garden Project, Harold Silva of Miami Dade College, Roger Horne of Belafonte TACOLCY youth center, Brad Knoefler of the Omni/Park West Redevelopment Association and Luz Agudelo, an HSC Public Ally who works with Little Havana residents. Interns include Alexandra Torres and Julia Atkinson.

In-kind support is provided by Miami Dade College and uVu (www.uvuvideo.org, the community video project of local public TV station WPBT).

About the Human Services Coalition (HSC) and Imagine Miami
Founded in 1995, the Human Services Coalition (HSC) identifies and launches innovative strategies to help people and communities thrive. HSC works through a network of partner organizations, linking people with financial education, healthcare information, public benefits and educational and economic opportunities. HSC’s programs promote economic self- sufficiency, participation in civic life and respect across many divides.

HSC inspires people to get involved and prepares them to step up to leadership roles that lead to long-term community transformation. As we learn to live and work together, we find common purpose and build a more just and inclusive society.

The Imagine Miami (IM) initiative was founded by HSC President and CEO Daniella Levine, and has grown into a “civic network” of local changemakers. IM connects people through the Changemaker conferences and other workshops, its online civic network (imaginemiami.ning.com), and special guides to local resources (see www.imaginemiami.org).

MUSIC / MUSICA
Malena Burke (10:00 – 11:00 p.m.)
Malena was born in Havana, Cuba. She began her musical studies at various art schools when she was only 18 years old and graduated from the Amadeo Roldan Conservatory with diplomas in violin, guitar, and musical writing. Her singing career developed by coincidence. Malena received her initial proposal to perform at the anniversary of the Casino Parisien, at the Hotel National, Havana’s most distinguished hotel. She accepted and performed for the first time together with her mother, the legendary Cuban singer Elena Burke. The following year, she was selected to perform as headliner at the Tropicana, where continued as principal performer for five years. ART / ARTE
Cremata Gallery
Cremata Gallery is pleased to present Argentinean Visions: from Modernism to Contemporary Aesthetics, an exhibition featuring an exciting collection of acrylics, oils, collages, inks, and watercolors, from the fifties to today. From Italo-Argentinean Modernist masters Bruno Venier and Carlo Monzani, who has exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum in NYC, to contemporary artists living in Argentina. We are presenting 17 artists with very different styles. Like US art, Argentine art has a strong flavor of the melting pot, that has lately been turning from European influences to its native resources. Many of the paintings and water colors in the show were inspired by the École de Paris, from staid academic works to surrealism. Others are more indigenous. Join us for this awaited summer show on Viernes Culturales, have a glass of wine and enjoy our exhibit. Exhibition runs through July 30th, 2009.

Taurus Returns for another round in Coconut Grove, Florida on 4th of July 7/4/09

Taurus Returns of Another Round in Coconut Grove, Florida On July 4, 2009

The Taurus, long considered one of Coconut Grove’s most beloved traditions, is returning to its original location, the perfectly suited little cottage on the edge of the village center, along Main Highway in Coconut Grove that also happens to be one of the city’s oldest buildings. Opening is set for July 4, 2009 with a VIP party from 4 to 6 pm, scheduled as part of the Grove-wide July 4th celebration.

Nearly 84 years ago, the little cottage on the edge of Main Highway, became the gathering place for locals, and remained so until 2002, when the one-acre site was developed into the award-winning Grove Garden residential complex. Now, eight years later, the Taurus is back for another round, right where it started, proving the age old saying, “The more things change, the more they remain the same.”

The Taurus is part of the trio of eateries at 3540 Main Highway, which also includes Calamari Italian Seafood and La Bottega Italian Enoteca, scheduled to open later this summer. All is part of the family of restaurants of the highly successful restaurateur, Tom Billante, who has given us such South Florida favorites as Il Villagio, in Merrick Park, Carpaccio in Bal Harbour, Bella Luna and Trattoria Rosalia in Aventura, and Luna Café. At the helm of management will be Salvatore Catania, whose association with Billante dates back to when he was Maitre d’ at Billante’s legendary Mezzanote in South Beach.

Salvo Catania is adamant that The Taurus will remain true to its traditional “bar and grill” offerings, from the beer and cocktails, that made it the perfect casual gathering and meeting place for locals, to the place where one can expect the best burger in town any time. “We want this to be the Grove’s corner pub, where you can enjoy a refreshing beer and always count on getting a great burger; a place where the locals gather and visitors or tourists are welcome; and most of all a place where everyone comes together to share stories and have a good time,” he says.

avant-garde-miami
June 26 at 7.00 pm at Alliance Française de Miami
Avant Garde Miami Group exhibit. Opening night with the young artists and Floyd The Rock Artist.

Daring to show a diverse trajectory of avant garde art, Floyd The Rock Artist invites these young, ground-breaking artists to join forces to show an explosion of artistic expression. The artists invited by the Alliance Francaise of Miami will present an array of riveting new artwork, ranging from beautiful figurative acrylic on canvas to exuberant abstracts, digital collage, photography, and metal sculpture.

Free admission
Visiting Hours: 9.00am until 8.00pm week days/ Fridays: 9.00am until 7.00pm/
Saturdays: 9.00am until 2.00PM

Floyd The Rock Artist –
Floyd is a pioneer in the Motion Art movement; he is the only artist of his kind who creates art with rock bands. The final product is a revolution on canvas fueled by the music’s energy and Floyd’s art. His art manages to span the commercial, artistic and street worlds. Performing live art, he says, has always felt natural, organic and gave him a voice. “I am an irreverent artist. I break rules in art and use a different form of expression without respect for established patterns in paintings.” -Floyd

He has performed with music greats such as Juanes, Ricardo Montaner and Miami’s own Guajiro. He has had several gallery exhibits in Miami, Coral Gables and Wynwood Design District as well as had his work auctioned off to benefit organizations such as The Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and La Ventana de los Cielos. Most recently his performances and art were featured at the Art Miami’s Bridge Art Fair and Green Art Fair in December 2008. In March 2009 he was invited by Irreversible Magazine to exhibit at Arte Americas at the Miami Beach Convention Center.
Gaby Guimarey –
Argentinean-born Gaby Guimarey is an established journalist, photographer and artist who rocks a career in TV and Radio. You can find her as the host of the popular show Puerta Astral on Mega TV and has had several art expositions in Argentina and Miami. This show will feature her modern, abstract acrylics on canvas that use a visual language of form and color to interpret the unexpected balance between nature and industry.
Clarissa Rodriguez –
Clarissa Rodriguez was born in Puerto Rico and is an abstract painter who paints modern, geometric figures on surprising mediums. A seasoned artist with various expositions under her belt she brings with her a fresh and new approach on abstract painting.
Rosabel Quevedo –
I view the art of photography as a subtractive process, a distilling of reality into a personal vision. As such I often use the tools of modern photography – different film stocks, filters, digital enhancement – to try to capture in an image the emotions I felt at the moment I tripped the camera’s shutter.
Aliett Kramer –
Her color has the unemphatic glow of a slow embrace, and the carefully calibrated horizontal bands drawn across the landscape in a colorful form of freedom and all the psychological assurance that measurement can bring no corners or end. The work is undemanding but right there, detached but full of feeling.
Antonia Wright –
Antonia Wright is a Miami born, Cuban-America artist, whose work employs photography, poetry, performance, installation, video art and the interaction between these forms. Her pieces are ‘social experiments’, highlighting the bizarre within the everyday façade of the ‘normal’. Much of her work investigates interpersonal connections to our surroundings and why we, both collectively and individually, do the things we do. She received an M.F.A. in poetry from the New School University and is a graduate from the International Center of Photography’s General Studies Program. Antonia’s work has been featured in numerous group shows including Amnesty International’s exposé on Cuban-American artists in Los Angeles. She is also the curator of the The Keys Project, an ongoing multi-city venture whose aim is to document and collect keys and portraits of their possessors.
Katia Jirasova –
Katia Jirasova was born in Lima, Peru with Czech, Italian and Peruvian grandparents. She attended a British high-school and later graduated with different degrees in American universities where she had contact with a variety of cultures. Here is when she learned to be a CITIZEN of the WORLD. Part of her life is using art to communicate a genuine LOVE and RESPECT for every member of humanity, independent from their race, religion, beliefs and lifestyles. “My only fear is the closed mindedness and disrespect by unenlightened beings towards the incomprehensible.”
Special Guests :
Manuel Millares –
Born in Havana, Cuba and exiled to the US in 1960, Manuel Millares has been a long time figure in the influential art scene in New York in the late 60s. He predominantly works with metal and has sculptures in Museums, public spaces as well as being acquired by private collectors.
Irreversible Magazine –
Irreversible Magazine is an International art project founded in 2005 by Norelkys (Noor) Blazekovic, to portray how in recent decades artists have progressively expanded the boundaries of art, as they have sought to engage in an increasingly pluralistic environment. The creating and understanding of art, are likewise no longer grounded in traditional aesthetics. In the early 20th century, Marcel Duchamp threw all traditional notions of the identity of the artist and of art into disarray and his Dada associates. In ironic mockery of the Renaissance tradition, which had placed the artist in an exalted authoritative position, Duchamp, as an artist, declared that anything the artist produces, is art. For the duration of the 20th century, this position has complicated and undermined how art is perceived but at the same time, it has fostered a broader, more inclusive assessment of art. Irreversible invites to explore the freedom of developing new models and instruments from everyday life, as Irreversible evolves in its efforts to become a creative medium for the better understanding of the complexities of our contemporary existence.

Center for Folk and Community Art debut at the Sunrise Log Cabin Plant Nursery and Life Training Center 6/26/09

Miami-Dade County And The City Of Miami Beach
Proclaim June 26, 2009
“We Are Artists, Too!” Day At The Log Cabin”

An exhibition of artwork created by developmentally challenged adults ranging in age from 18 to 68 years old will debut at the Sunrise Log Cabin Plant Nursery and Life Training Center, 8128 Collins Ave, Miami Beach, on Friday, June 26th, 2009 at 12:00 Noon. This exhibition aims to raise awareness within our community of the abilities of this special population and the role they play in making the Log Cabin a North Beach destination.
In a special ceremony, Miami-Dade County Commissioner Sally Heyman and Miami Beach Mayor Matti Herrera Bower will assist the artists as they unveil a tapestry of their work for the first time in public. In honor of the occasion, each will proclaim June 26, 2009, “We are Artists, Too!” Day.
With the cooperation of Sunrise Community, Inc. the managing organization of the Sunrise Log Cabin Life Training Center, Center for Folk and Community Art (“CFCA”) produced this “I’m an Artist, Too!” outreach project. CFCA artists Dena Stewart and Stewart Stewart facilitated a series of specially designed art-making sessions for the participants to create artwork that expresses their experiences what is meaningful to them.
“We have done many art programs here at the Life Training Center with varying success. This project brought out the artist in everyone who participated. That has never happened before,” stated Maria Valasquez, DSA Instructor at this Sunrise Community Group facility for nine years.
The tapestry of artwork will be displayed at the Botanical Gardens Miami Beach in July and in the lobby of the Stephen P. Clark Government Center for the month of September, where it will be added to other tapestry panels as part of an exhibit called “A Picture of the County.” Other exhibition venues to be announced.

CFCA projects are made possible through the generous support of: The City of Miami Beach Department of Tourism and Cultural Development, Office of Cultural Affairs, and the Miami Beach Mayor and City Commissioners.
The Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and the Board of County Commissioners.
Sponsored in part by the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, the Florida Arts Council, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

CFCA is a non-profit 501(c)(3) arts organization whose mission is to use visual art as a tool of intervention, prevention and education to impact community issues and improve the human condition.

The impact of Antipersonnel Mines with Gervasio Sánchez and Gustavo Laurie from the United Nationes Mine Action Service (UNMAS).

Ten 10 years after the creation of the Ottawa Treaty against antipersonnel mines only 151 countries have signed the document. Today 167 millions of those gadgets are still buried in 78 countries all over the World. The work by the Spanish photo journalist Gervasio Sánchez, awarded with the Rey de España International Press Price in 2008, shows us how countries involved in war change forever.
Antipersonnel mines are still a problem for the international community. Dozens of countries suffer the consequences while many governments systematically break their promises or even violate the Treaty they have already signed. This show offers an overview of the present reality of the victims that were part of Sanchez’s first works on the issue. The aim is to raise public awareness about the impact of those weapons.
The show has been on tour in 2008 (60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights) and has visited among others the UNESCO headquarters in Paris and the United Nations in New York. Vidas Minadas 10 años después / Mined Lives 10 years later will be on view until July 31th.

✸ FONTAINEBLEAU MIAMI BEACH

At the beginning of the 20th century Miami Beach was an island of farmland set amidst a jungle of mangrove – a landscape primarily wild and still uninhabited.

In the 1950’s Miami beach entered a golden era and was considered America’s Riviera. In the 1980’s an influx of fashion designers, photographers and models sparked a renaissance of Miami Beach glamour and style.

Today Fontainebleau Miami introduces a new culture. One that blurs the line between the glamour of the past , the luxury of the present and a new vision of tomorrow.

Fontainebleau’s new poolscape boasts “walls of water” intermingled with a free-form pool. DAM-FUNK
Though he’s frequently tagged as “the ambassador of Boogie,” Dam-Funk (pronounced: “Dame” as in his first name Damon) doesn’t make “boogie music” — the post-disco amalgam of funk, electro, New Wave and disco that lit up discotheques and roller rinks from Los Angeles to London throughout the early ’80s. Not content to traffic in polite revisionism, the Pasadena-raised, Leimert Park-based Stones Throw artist describes his brand of chromatic tripped-out soul as “modern funk,” which is arguably the most accurate description of his syncretistic meld of P-Funk and Prince to drum machines and post-house groove.

Photographs & Review – Fuerza Bruta

Nothing I can say can prepare you for Fuerza Bruta. The photographs do not remotely do it justice. I cannot encourage you to go any more strongly. This was one of the most fantastic, sexiest, energetic, creative, original shows I have ever been to in my life. One warning, wear sneakers, not sandals, not heels, not dress shoes.

Rather than try to sort through all the photos to pick the best, I am just going to throw most of them up. Taking time from when I should be posting upcoming events or working on Life Is Art. But, I cannot stress to you enough how incredible Fuerza Bruta really is.

Oh, one more thing: do not look at the photos, go see the show!

“CAN ANYONE REALLY OWN WATER?”
(Directed by Irene Salina/USA/2008)
Irena Salina’s award-winning documentary is an investigation into what experts label the most important political and environmental issue of the 21st Century – The World Water Crisis. Salina builds a case against the growing privatization of the world’s dwindling fresh water supply with an unflinching focus on politics, pollution, human rights, and the emergence of a domineering world water cartel. Beyond identifying the problem, FLOW also gives viewers a look at the people and institutions providing practical solutions to the water crisis and those developing new technologies, which are fast becoming blueprints for a successful global and economic turnaround.

Cernuda Arte Exhibit Fuego En El Batey by Mario Carreno 7/3/09

CERNUDA ARTE WILL EXHIBIT ON FRIDAY, JULY 3, AT 7:00 P.M. THE ICONIC PAINTING FUEGO EN EL BATEY
BY CUBAN MASTER MARIO CARREÑO, ACQUIRED FOR 2.18 MILLION DOLLARS AT CHRISTIE’S MAY AUCTION IN NEW YORK
MARIO CARREÑO, Fuego en el Batey, 1943,Duco and oil on wood panel,
48 x 65 inches

Cernuda Arte proudly announces the acquisition – in equal partnership with the Rudman Family from the Dominican Republic – of the painting, Fuego en el Batey (Fire in the Sugar-Mill Village) a rediscovered gem of Cuban modernism. The painting, the highest valued work at Christie’s Latin American May sale, sold above its high estimate for 2.18 million dollars. Fuego en el Batey will be exhibited at Cernuda Arte on Friday, July 3rd at 7:00 p.m.
Fuego en el Batey was painted in Cuba, in 1943 and is considered one of three seminal masterworks of a series of paintings on wood panel in Duco and oil rendered by the Cuban master. The painting – known to biographers, art historians and collectors – was regarded as a lost treasure until recently found in the private collection of the late Milton and Nora Ward of New York, where it had been hanging on a wall of their home for more than 50 years. Fuego en el Batey, and two other major Duco works that conform the artist’s celebrated triad – Danza Afrocubana and El Corte de Caña – were exhibited together in Havana, in 1943. One of the exhibitions took place in Galería del Prado (a gallery owned by María Luisa Gómez Mena, the prominent Cuban Maecenas who later married Carreño.) The second one was a one-person-exhibition at Galería Lyceum. It is also believed that in 1944, when Mario Carreño resided for some time in New York, Fuego en el Batey and other works of this period were shown at Perls Galleries.

Fuego en el Batey portrays a scene of a family escaping a fire in the batey (a small village of precariously built houses and stables, in the surroundings of a sugar mill, where the sugar cane cutters and their families lived). The mother rapidly hands the child to a guajiro peasant riding a gallant-spirited horse. In the eyes of the viewer, the guajiro and horse become the heroic figures of this scenario. The moving image of this magnificent painting attests to Carreño’s desire of conveying, in some of his major works of this period, a Cuban national ethos. Regarding the high quality of this masterpiece, art historian Alejandro Anreus says, “The overall meatiness of the figures recalls Picasso’s neo-classic phase, the evocation of movement… brings to mind the Italian Futurists, yet the end product is pure Carreño, a skilled and powerful picture that is both classical and baroque in its pictorial language.”

In celebration of this memorable event, Cernuda Arte will be exhibiting – for the first time in Miami – this resurfaced treasure of Cuban art. We are very fortunate and honored to be able to share the enjoyment of this painting with the South Florida community. The exhibition, Fuego en el Batey, will also feature a group of museum quality works by Mario Carreño’s contemporaries such as, Wifredo Lam, Víctor Manuel, Eduardo Abela, Amelia Peláez, Carlos Enríquez, Fidelio Ponce, Luis Martínez Pedro, René Portocarrero, Cundo Bermúdez and Mariano Rodríguez, among others.

A series of lectures, given by Alejandro Anreus, PhD Professor of Art History and Latin American Studies at William Paterson University, New Jersey; Juan Martínez, PhD Professor of Art History at Florida International University and Architect-Urbanist Nicolás Quintana, Professor Emeritus of Florida International University, will be organized during the time-period of this exhibit.
Our gallery is located at 3155 Ponce de Leon Blvd, Coral Gables, Florida. For further information, please contact us at 305-461-1050 or at cernudaarte@msn.com

In a few short years, online communications have changed dramatically. From blogging to Facebook to Twitter, more and more people are participating in the conversation online. For continued effective communication, using these tools is not optional, it’s required … or is it?

Alex de Carvalho, co-founder of StartPR and adjunct professor of social media at the University of Miami, and Murray Izenwasser, Director of Client Strategy, Interactive Services for Starmark International, will discuss how social media is changing marketing, PR, and the way we work and live. What opportunities and challenges do we face with these tools? How do we understand and participate in communities in our current age of many-to-many media? How can we use them to drive real business?
Join us for this free seminar and networking. Register online and enjoy a free drink!

Zen Village and Life Is Art are co-hosting a premiere party and fundraiser for Heart for Humanity on June 19, 2009 from 6 p.m. – 11 p.m. at Zen Village located in Coconut Grove. The evening is filled with entertainment, art, peace and harmony.

Here II Here is performing music from their self-titled debut album, which is a result of collaborative efforts with Grammy-winning artistic geniuses, including engineer Doc Wiley and producer Joel Sommeillan. Their powerful lyrics lift you to higher levels of consciousness.

International renowned Digital Media Artist; Laurence Gartel, will be presenting his art inspired by a recent voyage to India. Gartel says, “What I discovered throughout the country was truly life altering. India is a country so rich in spirituality, but confronting poverty and survival on a daily basis. It is my hopes and goals to enlighten the plight of these people to the rest of the world.”

In addition, Life Is Art, a local organization dedicated to the support of the arts in Miami is hosting several local artists, including Kacey Westall Keogh, Sabrina Joy Winogrond, Floyd the Rock Artist, Alissa Christine, and R. E. SANCHEZ. Alissa Christine created the wildly popular I Love Miami 365 series in 2008, showcasing all that the city has to offer. Floyd the Rock Artist will be creating art live during the music performance. All art on display is for sale and a portion of the proceeds go towards the fundraising efforts.

Come join Heart for Humanity in its efforts to partner with agencies, organizations, institutions and community leaders that work with the underserved and underprivileged individuals. The goal of global peace and joy begins with individuals, and if we all make a small change we can make a world of difference together.

Venessa Monokian Art on 50 Art Viceroy Series 6/16/09

Venessa Monokian Conceptual Artist
Tuesday June 16 6-10 pm

Venessa Monokian is a Miami-based artist. She’s currently an Artist-in-Residence at ArtCenter/South Florida on Lincoln Road in Miami Beach.

Monokian’s particular interest is the examination of creative thought and the learning process. We are indelibly marked by our experiences in Elementary School, and this fascinates and inspires Venessa Monokian’s work. The point of departure is her personal experience with academia, which has been less than fulfilling. As the investigation into this subject matter progresses Monokian has found that it’s evolved from a personal critique of her own learning methods to an active inquiry into the educational experience in America at the dawn of the 21st Century.

The ArtCenter has one of the most rigorous non-profit exhibition schedules in South Florida and they continue to develop numerous art-focused programs that support the community as well as emerging artists.

Proceeds from the night will be donated by Viceroy to the ArtCenter/South Florida. Come show your support and savor the views!

“We are living in a time when fixed notions have been lost and new possibilities are on the
horizon. My work attempts to trap the mutable state of things where paradigms shift, boundaries
erode and particles collide. I investigate the architecture of chance, the stretching of the
‘truth’ and the delaying of the inevitable.”

Exploring drawing, collage and sculpture, Felice Grodin maps out cartographies of tension and
compression that remain spatially ambiguous. They represent moments of transformation,
movement and entropy.

Felice Grodin was born in Bologna, Italy. She obtained her BArch from Tulane University where
she received the Thomas J. Lupo Award for Metropolitan Studies for her thesis project, and her
MArch with Distinction from Harvard University where she was awarded the Faculty Design Award.
Her work was recently featured in the show “Drawing Beyond the Plane” at the Tampa Museum
of Art as well as the publication New American Paintings. In addition, she curated her first show at Locust Projects in Miami called “Synesthetics” which explored the creative interface between art, design and technology. Felice lives and works in Miami Beach.

O.H.W.O.W. Presents Michael Genovese Art show and DJ set by Camp Gabby 6/13/09

genovese_main
MICHAEL GENOVESE – IT’S NOT THE HEAT, IT’S THE HUMILITY

Opening June 13, 2009 – For his premiere solo exhibition in Miami, Michael Genovese releases a recent body of work that will include site-specific installations, sculpture, and paintings.

A Chicago native, Genovese instinctively carries a metropolitan dialect and acumen into his work. An early exposure to multiculturalism joined with his professional training as a sign painter led to a socially inspired vehicle of expression. Creating work that makes use of his technical abilities and familiarity with specific materials, Genovese’s ability to open a communal discourse ultimately became his trademark style. Through public murals and installations, his deft handling of type and unorthodox use of industrialized media further cemented his status as one of today’s most promising contemporary artists. His latest work exemplifies his focus on community and its influence, but also digs inward and begins the process of reconciling his public works with his personal journeys.

Michael Genovese has recently exhibited at the University of Texas, San Antonio, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago and the Chicago Cultural Center. His work was recently published in New American Paintings; The Upset: Young Contemporary Art, Art Lies Contemporary Art Quarterly and Dazed and Confused.

ABOUT O.H.W.O.W.: Aaron Bondaroff and Al Moran’s Our House West of Wynwood (O.H.W.O.W.) is Miami’s most exciting high profile art space. Designed by Rafael de Cardenas of Architecture at Large, the venue features prominent international and U.S. based experimental art as well as innovative contemporary art forms through an alternative cross-disciplinary perspective.

Pecha Kucha Night at The Wolfsonian-FIU 6/18/09

Pecha Kucha Night at The Wolfsonian-FIU: June 18, 2009
1001 Washington Avenue
Miami Beach, Florida 33139
T 305.531.1001 F 305.531.2133
wolfsonian.org
Debuting in Miami during Art Basel in 2006, this is the first time a Pecha Kucha night will be held at the Wolfsonian-FIU. This high-energy showcase of ideas started in Japan in 2003. Run by Carl Hildebrand, Director of Green Building Initiatives at Metro 1 Properties in Wynwood, the event’s theme will be Temperature Rising. Although the Pecha Kucha Night will not take place until Thursday evening June 18th from 7-9PM, the deadline for submissions is May 1st—Hildebrand says that is flexible.

Temperature Rising is open to interpretation. The only limit is one’s imagination. Presenters run the range of a local photographer capturing weather turbulence between high and low pressure systems, to inventor who improves air conditioner efficiency in a salt air environments, to a chef who’s taking the heat in the kitchen out into youth detention centers and a architecture group putting humanity and social responsibility into areas stricken with political crisis—in fact any topic that has the element of heat, temperature, stress, or crisis is acceptable.

The concept is that each presenter is allowed 20 images in a power point presentation that is shown for 20 second each– giving 6 minutes and 40 seconds of fame before the next presenter is up. This keeps presentations concise, interest level up and gives the opportunity for more people to express their ideas. Once all the submissions are in Hildebrand, along with the staff at the Wolfsonian-FIU will select the final eight to ten people who will do their Power Point presentations.

Hildebrand says that these evenings are so important because they get people talking, listening and promoting lively exchanges of ideas. “There are 8 to 10 people presenting and more than 100 listening,” he says. And then the conversations begin, a lost art he believes with everyone emailing and texting. “These evenings get people involved in their community and away from their computers and cell phones; it’s so not Twitter,” he says.

Oh Nancy founded by Nate Wellman and Fionn McCabe
Home Coming Stories : Curated by Brian Burkhardt
Opening Reception June 13th 2009 7- 10 p.m.

Oh Nancy is a vehicle for artists that provides them with a pre-existing narrative structure into which they can fit their work. The exh ibition at Gallery Diet will bring together all of these media, and the work of over thirty artists.

Artistic Networker and Professional Development Series

June 23, 7pm-10pm

Free but Please RSVP

Life Is Art invites artists of all disciplines, art professionals, art collectors, and art fans to come to our inaugural networker for the arts community!

We are hosting this to give you a chance to meet other artists and talk about the issues facing you in your quest to become successful. This event is primarily for artists and those working in the arts, but everyone is welcome.

This is planned to be a monthly series. At every Creative Connections event, Life Is Art is bringing in a professional to do a short presentation on a subject relevant to working artists, followed by a personal question and answer period. For our first event, we have invited Reed V. Horth, a fine art dealer, to talk about how to work with an art dealer. His website is www.robinrile.com. He has graciously offered to donate his time.

Of course, we are having complimentary wine and snacks. The event is completely free, though contributions are gratefully accepted.

We hope that you will take advantage of this opportunity to expand your network and help advance your artistic career. Please RSVP.

Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami- Dade County is thrilled to announce the Miami premiere of the international hit Fuerza Bruta, a non-stop collision of dynamic music, visceral emotion, and kinetic aerial imagery that resembles nothing less than a fantastic mash-up between aerial theater and a late-night dance party.

Beginning June 9, the Lynn Wolfson Stage inside of the Adrienne Arsht Center’s Sanford and Dolores Ziff Ballet Opera House will be transformed into an alternate universe with flying dancers, pumping beats, engaging dream sequences and a multidimensional swimming pool above the heads of the audience.

Fuerza Bruta opens officially on June 11, with preview performances June 9 and 10, and will be on stage for a limited 4-week engagement.

“More than 130,000 people enjoyed a performance at the Center last summer. With the presentation of Fuerza Bruta beginning in June, the Adrienne Arsht Center brings to Miami a show that will rock South Florida – a cutting-edge performance that has been a hit all over the world,” said M. John Richard, president and CEO of the Adrienne Arsht Center.

Breaking free from the confines of spoken language and theatrical convention, Fuerza Bruta is an event where worlds collide and reality takes a back seat. This heart-pounding theatrical experience takes place completely on the Lynn Wolfson stage and begins the moment audiences walk in through the Center’s loading dock (dubbed the “Media Dock”) into the Fuerza Bruta lounge – a hip urban space alive with heart-pounding club music directed by Miami’s best DJs, multimedia art installations created by local artists, and a signature Barton G. restaurant inspired by the show.

At show time, audiences are ushered onto the main stage where they are engulfed in a 360 degree spectacle featuring mind-blowing visual effects just inches above the audience that must be seen to be believed – a man running full throttle on a giant treadmill, bursting through a series of moving walls; performers suspended in mid-air surrounded by a vast sea of mylar; and gorgeous women twisting ethereally in a lucite pool above the audience. Argentinean creative genius Diqui James, one of the creators of the smash hit show De La Guarda, created the original scenes and magnificent customized staging exclusively for the Miami engagement.

As the performance winds down, the visual and aural party continues in the Fuerza Bruta lounge. The pre- and post-party lounge is open to the general public.

“The audience experience will be unlike any other presentation at the Adrienne Arsht Center. From the unique entrance through the loading dock and onstage experience to the interactive pre- and after-party components, Fuerza Bruta will be the talk of the town this summer,” continued Richard.
