The creation of a paradoxical surface of abstract landscapes seems to characterise the new pictorial research of Aline Jansen. This geographical sensitivity takes its place in a tradition of abstract art modelling where multiple references mark her active sense of inquiry.

Aline Jansen’s paintings not only inscribe geometric forms of the earth but also those of the cosmos, onto concepts of Euclidean and non-Euclidean spaces. In fact, at this very moment how should we look at the earth when from high above the sky it is being scanned and the image of which being digitised by high quality software such as Google Earth ? A shift in opinion which marks the beginning of a revolution in the way we see, similar to the early days we used perspective itself. A view from far or from close, to suit demand. And how are we to introduce and project the idea of a « Global Village » in a paiting ? A representation of the phenomenon globally against the uniqueness of creative talent or instead an attempt to make use of the technological advancement in one’s own pursuit. It is at the heart of this divergence that are founded the master pieces of this artist.
We have already brought up about her the notion of cartography since her paintings express two dimensional space while at the same time keeping a very close feel to the notion of volumes. There is thus a build up to an abstract landscape, referring itself not quite directly to nature but allowing room for an option to re-interpretation. Techniques that come into play such as the use of glue and cements combined with pigments and even more trivial materials like carton or cloths constitute her own vocabulary that gets translated into these colourful sedimentations. It’s in this manner that layer by layer the perception of this new world begins to take shape, in a framework of both slow and fast elaboration.
Small and large valleys, craters, hollows, hills and mountains and the likes, occur in such a lexical language of forms that allows the topology of a landscape to be defined. It is then left to the observer to simply travel through these series of shimmerings, to change position in the hope of finding a new vision or to continue the road ahead via the sandy beaches. Earthquakes, movements and overlapping of telluric plates, land slides and so on, bring about a new set of terminology describing earthly movements, allowing once more the esthetic art composition to find its equivalence with the planet. The pictured forms collide, overlap and combine with one another in sometimes gaceful and in other times violent movements, but always carried away by the composition of the plans. The usage of stabilised aqueous elements, similar to the vast frozen expanses, additionally facilitates following this embedding of such planetary lexical fields. For Aline Jansen, the true meaning lies in composing the mental landscapes in accordance to the tangible realities of the earth. These spatial arrangements get materially determined by the grace of the elements making it up. From the relation between the fibres of the ‘making’ of the picture and the possible imagination from each and every vision, will spring a potential landscape, almost moving and based on uncertainty.
In her paintings, the debris from each fabric mix themselves into fleeting impressions of new forms which are in themselves always uniquely repeatable. Writings where complex shapes adjust and result in random structures much to the likeness of landscapes. Working from memory, by invention, structured by the multiple possibilities inherent in the canvasses themselves. Just like a self evolving set up, put in place to seize and illustrate the observer’s own imagination. In the work of Aline Jasen, the multi dimensional spaces come together in harmony to marry into what we can eventually call « straight curves ».

David Castillo Gallery presents Jackie Gendel & Tom McGrath and Shay Kun’s Opportunities multiply as they are seized 3/14/09

Jackie Gendel &
Tom McGrath
David Castillo Gallery
2234 NW 2nd Avenue, Miami
March 14 – April 4, 2009
Reception March 14, 7-10 pm
David Castillo Gallery is proud to present new work by Jackie Gendel and Tom McGrath. Jackie Gendel combines personal langauge, Art Historical reference, and cultural cues to create a place and time populated largely by symbolic women and feminized notions of abstraction. The work brings to bear the decadence of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Miss Haversham’s disquieting nostalgia. Gendel magnetizes oil paint, merging and estranging color, form, and a delirious but skeptical mode of expressionism. The ultimate effect of her alchemy is akin to being caught in a bad dream. The viewer floats like a Matisse subject through a psychological landscape rendered with careful ambiguity-an oxymoron that pushes Gendel’s mastery of her medium to transient ends. The viewer begins to doubt the innocuous round of a chin against chin modestly discernable beneath an otherworld of lemon chiffon. Who are these women? What do they want? How much of their effervescence is self-portraiture, how much is observation, and how much is paint finding paint on canvas?

Tom McGrath’s recent work hinges on the painted idiom between the personal and the societal. His gridded sky-views inspired by red-eye flights and lookout points along Los Angeles’s Mulholland Drive command a romanticism in the emotional contexts familiar to American cities and city-dwellers. The God- views imbibed by his large canvasses speak not only to the theme-park tourism of American Graffiti-esque make-out spots, but also to the Manifest Destiny apparent in American painting, real estate, and privilege. McGrath’s combination of neon and naturalist colors as well as the underlying irrationality of applied paint behind his grids suggests a wildness in opposition to imperialist thought in American sentiment and sustainability.

Jackie Gendel earned her MFA in Painting and Printmaking from Yale University. She has been an artist in residence at the MacDowell Colony and The Atlantic Center for the Arts. Her work has appeared in Art Papers, Art in America, and the New Yorker. Tom McGrath holds degrees from the Cooper Union School of Art and Columbia University. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and has appeared in Artforum and Harper’s Magazine.

Shay Kun
Opportunities multiply as they are seized
David Castillo Annex
2234 NW 2nd Avenue, Miami
March 14 – April 4, 2009
Reception March 14, 7-10 pm

In the David Castillo Annex, Shay Kun’s Opportunities multiply as they are seized presents a spiritual almanac that unites Himalayan clefts and the shallows of the Hudson River School; a leisurely hot air balloon and the coveralls of industrial unionists; the Bobbsey twins and G.I. Joe. His oil on canvas works recall plein air painting, psychedelic exploration, and science fiction fanzines. Titles such as Put aside the alienation and Knowledge speaks, but wisdom listens allow space for the narrative voice of his landscapes to easily incorporate Grandma’s parabolic musings, calculated propaganda, and the script of an undiscovered Alejandro Jodorowsky film.

However, a prolonged look at Opportunities multiply as they are seized seems to suggest that despite the collage-like harmony of Kun’s imagery, Thomas Cole would shake his head at nature’s grandeur populated by human invaders-tourists, adventurists, and workers from all social strata. Although these interlopers and the traces of their occupation do not overwhelm the sublimity of nature, they do question the meaning of progress, the possibility of symbiosis, and whether the spiritual cognizance Cole and his colleagues ascribed to the outdoors stem from unadulterated nature alone.

Shay Kun earned an MA in Fine Art from Goldsmiths College, London. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally.

Mideo M. Cruz – Everything Must Go

Notions of self as nation are currently besieged, their inner gut work sucked out by a voracious globalist zeitgeist funded by large late capital. To cite a potential contribution to one’s national culture would have to be determinedly conceited on mine or Mideo’s part, but, if one might be able to determine such a lofty yet necessarily foundational category, then one would have to support those who have been consistent, bold and willing to sustain its thankless, uphill climb, for all that takes. Mideo Cruz has so far shown himself to be equal to this. The nationalist project of Social Realism in the Philippines, which began in 1975, has found, after the co-opted faltering of Salingpusa and untimely implosion of Sanggawa, an appropriate bridge into the 21st century’s vast, bewildering and fractured terrain in Mideo Cruz and his collective, the new world disorder. Jose Tence Ruiz

J. Valdivia – Ten-Selves

Artist Statement:

As a child I would gaze at other children as mysterious individuals. I have shifted that light onto myself to inspect my identity as a person. One’s body, gender, life paths, and death have all been preoccupations of mine. I’ve noticed a need to create identities accordingly with the yearning to be accepted. With that desire I have suffered, rejoiced, and grown thicker skin to bitterness. I find myself on a dividing path of choice in which we take leaps, steps and falls. With destination in mind similarly to one another, we stand alone within an objective psyche.

Fantastic New Paintings by RYAN HESHKA
March 14th, 7-11pm

NEW LOCATION
2294 NW 2nd Ave.
Miami, Florida 33127
(Wynwood Art District)

Ryan Heshka pays homage to Golden Era sci fi pulp while creating a style that is also uniquely his own. He explores themes of man vs nature, (even though often the “nature” is from another world) as well as the exploring the ideology of pushing the limits of science as a tool to help and further mankind, and the technological terrors that can be inadvertently unleashed as a result.

His newer series is also influenced by WW2 era propaganda posters, which demonized the enemy into an cartoonish and evil caricature. Is this case, the “enemy” really is an alien threat and deserving of such treatment!

His work is acrylic painted on wood panel, heavily varnished and embellished with tags cut from pulp magazines, which serve as inspiration and explanation of each piece.

Ryan’s work must be experienced in person, so please come to this special show and see our new location. Originals, Prints, Books, ect… will be available for every budget. See ya there!

Gallerist Eric Charest-Weinberg will be giving the students of the Miami Design District’s Design and Architecture Senior High School (DASH) their first big break. The best artwork done by juniors and seniors will be presented in an exhibition at the Charest-Weinberg Gallery (250 NW 23rd Street – Space 408) on March 14th, 2009, from 7 to 10 PM during the Wynwood Gallery Walk. All proceeds from sales of the work at this special event will go directly to the student artists.

Students featured in the exhibition include: Christopher Bender, Alejandro Cercas, Marcela Escobar, Victor Fernandez, Jasmine Nones-Newman, Lauren Robie, Paula Stevenson, Mei Fung Su, Danielle Zaslavskaya and Thomas Zenteno.

The 24-year old Charest-Weinberg, whose gallery is now celebrating its second season in the Wynwood Arts District, hand-selected the work of the ten students to be featured in this unique exhibition. “I wanted to do something that would directly benefit students that are looking towards art as their life’s work. Throughout my education, I had the benefit of tremendous access to the arts. It allowed to me to follow my passion. Giving these kids a real gallery exhibition and establishing them within the context of a curated show is a great opportunity to push them to follow their own.”

“It is not often that high school students are presented the chance to participate in a truly professional endeavor; especially in today’s competitive art world,” said DASH Principal Stacey Mancuso. “Mr. Charest-Weinberg recognizes these challenges and has responded by this creating this wonderful opportunity. I am honored that Eric has selected DASH as his venue for inquiry. The students are truly delighted to be associated with the exhibition.”

In addition to showcasing new work from the participating students, each artist has been asked to compose their own text to accompany the work that they will be displaying.

HOME Miami & Florida Travel + Life will be sponsoring this one night only event.

In addition, the Charest-Weinberg Gallery has partnered with a number of local business who have agreed to donate to this exhibition including: Impress Digital Printing Solutions impressmiami.com, Clic::Studio Photography clicstudio.com and USA Frame usaframe.com.

Making its debut at this year’s Miami Fashion Week® is the International Culinary Arts Pavilion — a fashionable feast occurring nightly under the design direction of a different celebrity chef who will create cuisine inspired by the native countries of the fashion designers being showcased that night. Accompanying the tasting menus will be wine pairings by Italian vineyard Casa Vinicola Zonin. The International Culinary Arts Pavilion is being presented by Whole Foods Market, Johnson & Wales University, and A Joy Wallace Catering Production and Design Team.

Thursday night, March 19, Elgin Woodman, Chef de Cuisine, A Joy Wallace Catering Production and Design Team, will be creating a tasting menu featuring native tastes from the Caribbean, including South Florida favorites. Friday, March 20, the International Culinary Arts Pavilion travels to the Dominican Republic and South America with James Beard Award finalist Chef Edgar Leal from Cacao Restaurant. Chef Leal began his career as an apprentice cook under the guidance of Chef Marc Provost at Gazebo Restaurant in his native Caracas, Venezuela. After a series of impressive accomplishments throughout Europe, Chef Leal opened Cacao in Coral Gables in October 2002, with his wife Mariana Montero De Castro, Chef de Cuisine and Patissier of the restaurant. Cacao Restaurant was named Best New Restaurant by Food & Wine, Florida Trend Magazine and The Miami Herald, and Coral Gables’ Most Accomplished Restaurant by Wine Spectator. Chef Leal has been featured by The New York Times, Time Magazine and has appeared on NBC’s “Today Show.” In 2007, Cacao was named one of America’s top 10 restaurants in Miami/South Florida by Zagat’s Restaurant Survey.

Empfangshalle with Thomas Adebahr The Benjamin Project at Gallery Diet 3/14/09

EMPFANGSHALLE with Thomas Adebahr
The Benjamin Project

March 14th – April 4th 2009
Opening Reception March 14th 7 – 10 PM

Gallery Diet is pleased to announce the latest exhibition in its invitational series, The Benjamin Project by German collaborative, Empfangshalle and Thomas Adebahr. The artists, whose work has been exhibited globally at prestigious events and institutions such as the 52nd Venice Biennial and Ars Electronica in Linz, Austria, will be exhibiting for the first time in Miami, Florida. The Benjamin Project, which consists of a series of large oil paintings, and one documentary video, is rooted in the critique and exploration of what is and what can be considered “original.” In Dafen, China, the world’s capital city for copying works of art, Empfangshalle has commissioned artists to make paintings derived from every double page of Walter Benjamin’s essay, “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction.” 38 paintings in total where every letter, the fine structure of the paper, the way the lines shimmer through on the other side, the fold and other details, are recorded by the Chinese artists – each in his or her own way. Every work is created by a different workshop, a different painter, every painting marked with the painter’s unique signature.
Also on view, an excerpt from the documentary film chronicling this process. Empfangshalle is comprised of two artists, Corbinian Böhm and Michael Gruber, who for this project worked alongside German filmmaker Thomas Adebahr. This exhibition will be on view from March 14th thru April 4th 2009 at Gallery Diet with an opening reception March 14th from 7 – 10 p.m.

Life Is Art Announces Artist List For The Inaugural Miami Featured Artist Fair 3/7/09

After finding a sponsor for a venue to host their art fair, Life Is Art quickly moved to put out a call for artists. Given the short time span, and the fact that it was a new organization, they expected to receive a few artists showing interest. Instead, the applications came pouring in rapidly. “The response was overwhelming,” states James Echols, one of the founders of the non-profit organization designed to promote and support the Miami arts scene.

“We had originally planned to host ten or a dozen artists,” Echols said, “but we had so many excellent submissions that we expanded it to nearly twenty.” However, there were many good artists that had to be turned away for this first fair. Fortunately, Life Is Art plans to produce numerous events and hopes to be able to work with many more artists in the future.

Life Is Art is hosting a wide variety of Miami-based artists, sculptors, painters, and photographers, from those with much experience to those for whom this is their first show.

The unique and exotic nature of South Beach with it’s diverse mixture of life was so eerily familiar to Scott Branch’s childhood in Saudi Arabia that he found himself wanting to photograph every bit of life around him when he relocated to Miami in 2007. Today, Scott shoots primarily models, from fashion to erotica, street photography, and anything that catches his eye in the place he now calls home.

Dianne Romero Buitrago’s work is based on drawings of fears and things in this world we reject to see. The drawing of mutilated, distorted lines embodies a web of lust, birth, destruction and fear. They are scrolls of the world thru her eyes.

Angelica Clyman is a native of South Florida whose work centers around introspective experience and the search for the sacred in the most ordinary places. Her paintings explore the shifting perceptions of her changing environment, and express stillness, solitude, and a sense of private adventure. She has received her BFA from New World School of the Arts and her MFA from Florida International University, and currently is an artist-in-residence at the Art Center / South Florida.

Diana Contreras believes that art is a form of worship and therefore Christianity influences much of her work. Masters such as Frida Kahlo, Gustav Klimt, and Salvador Dali have been an inspiration to her artwork. The ability to work in many mediums including charcoal, watercolor, and oil has given Diana freedom to experiment in mixed media.

Nathan Delinois has numerous influences including his Haitian background and the use of color in a lot of Haitian art, as well as much of the graffiti of Marc Ecko, Tat’s Cru and The Inkheads. The design quality of African art and the drama of Greek art from the Hellenistic period can also been seen in his work. Additionally, he takes some influence from the new pop surrealists also known as lowbrow artists.

In her work, Natasha Duwin explores the ideas of female-ness and womanhood using non-traditional materials, such as metals and organic matter, in traditionally “feminine” techniques, such as weaving and embroidery. She has shown extensively, and is included in several prominent collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan. She holds an MFA in Visual Arts from Florida International University and is an Artist-in-Residence at ArtCenter South Florida.

Daniel Fiorda is self-taught and has exhibited widely throughout the U.S. including OK Harris Gallery, Allan Stone Gallery in New York as well as Heriard-Cimino Gallery in New Orleans and Lelia Mordoch Gallery, Paris France. Daniel was one of the winners in the 7th Annual Sculptures Competition (2003) held at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas. He is an alumni Artist of ArtCenter/South Florida.

Ania Moussawel took an early interest in the arts. After taking her first course in photography, she was smitten and felt it allowed her to express her ideas better than any other medium. She studied photography at Parsons School of Design in New York City and Barry University in Miami Shores. In this series, Ania uses nightgowns to explore the fundamental nature of women.

Grateful Dan uses ambient backgrounds, colors and form inspired by artists such as McGee, Klimt and Rivera, as well as music and poetry to reflect certain moods and/or to tell a short narrative whose cause and effect is open to speculation.

Emilio Hector Rodriguez uses art to help him grow younger. Originally from Cuba, he moved to Miami in 1982. A life-long artist, in 2005 he began painting with acrylic guided by the well-known Cuban painter Dominica Alcantra.

Andres Dominguez Saavedra’s project conveys a vision typical of Chilean culture. This artistic design reveals this identity and in hi interpretation of it he evokes certain characteristics from classical art in which the study of drawing and sketch are developed within the finished artwork.

R. E. SANCHEZ is a Miami-based artist whose work has been exhibited regularly in non-profit organizations and gallery venues. He is a Salvadoran expatriate who relocated to the U.S. to pursue his passion for art in 1989. He received his Bachelor of Art (BFA) from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2000. Since 1994 he has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions both nationally and internationally. His work can be found in many private collections. R. E. SANCHEZ’s work offers cultural commentary on the personal, social and political events of the human experience.

Wagner Schneider is a self-taught artist who expresses himself without boundaries, against the norm and in constant search for the “boredom breaker” as he calls it. Wagner opposes learning through art schools, as he believes the artist should be found from within, free and never molded by the teachings of any institution.

Since 1999, the bulk of Dan Vidal‘s photographic work has focused on the nightlife culture of the major cities of the U.S. During this time, the nightlife photographer has risen from being a marginal player in the scene to an integral, almost ubiquitous documentarian. With an eye towards getting away from that ubiquity, Vidal utilizes all the elements within the events and locations where he shoots, existing lights, reflections, fog, smoke, and expression for that elusive “right” look.

Adding new dimensions to abstract painting and expanding the essence of emotions, Felicia Warren blends or blurs conventional methods of using materials while creating on the canvas. Her fingers often become the paintbrush and the canvas becomes the palette while she is searching for the representation of her thought.

Kacey Westall Keogh received her B.F.A from F.I.U. and has exhibited work and performed live drawings throughout South Florida including The Wallflower Gallery, Kevro Art Bar, Edge Zones Gallery, SCOPE Art Fair and Miami Art Space. Her work deals with ephemeral thoughts and the perplexity of the conscious and unconscious mind.

For Daniela Wicki, art is an aesthetic, ethical and ultimately spiritual force; a challenge made in the experience of finding in each and every creation, a self realization, a self portrait of her own energy, a landscape of forces, life in motion rather than still-life. Art speaks for itself.

Hosting all these artists, the fair is being held at the historic 1926 Seminole Building, also called the Terminal Lofts, in the Wynwood Arts District at 120 Northwest 25th Street on March 7th from 2:00pm to 10:00pm. The venue is kindly sponsored by Lombardi Properties. The fair is also being supported by Henry Stone Music and SoulOfMiami.org.

The visual arts are accompanied by music, fashion, performance, food, and, of course, drink. Complimentary beverages are provided by Grolsch Beer, Barefoot Wine, with eco-friendly cocktails courtesy of VeeV, and espresso to keep everything hopping by Oro Coffee & Tea Services. The Lounge is provided by the Miami Rescue Mission through their Bargain Barn thrift store. Soho Studios Miami is providing technical support. Promotional support provided by Yelp.com.

Chef Zane is preparing an amazing, yet reasonably priced menu of light fare. Bringing the delicious desserts is D’leecious Bake Shop with a wide variety of tasty treats. Local DJS Soozin, Diaga, Sebastian, David Kerns, and Lumin will provide music, with a wide variety of styles for all tastes. There are even a few exciting surprises in store for fairgoers.

A magic word protected by his sentinel

There was a time, about 15 years ago, while still living in France, that I traveled a lot in Africa, and I was deeply impressed by the African people, who still had one foot in the past, with all their traditions and culture, and one foot in the contemporary world.
Both, the tribal tradition and native art were so strong. They greatly inspired me, but it is only for the past 2 years, that my work has become very influenced by all the semental and emotional “souvenirs”. My work about the Sentinels is, obviously, a translation of African art sculpture and painting combined with specific African symbols.

Around Jenin’s by Jerome Soimaud Opening Reception at Yeelen Art Gallery 2/14/09

“Around Jenin’s” by Jerome Soimaud, Opening Reception
Saturday, February 14 at 7 p.m.

“Around Jenin’s,” a photographic series of Miami’s Little Haiti by Jerome Soimaud, will open at Yeelen Art Gallery. From the perspective of a local corner store, the artist invites you to discover the universe of this African Diaspora. Jenin’s is the quintessential corner shop, a fixture in Little Haiti’s urban landscape where community life is played out. Vibrantly animated, the atmosphere offers many characters: the shop owner, the talker, Casanova, the baller/shot caller, the notorious, and even the dreamer. Ideas are spilled, gossip is shared and a vision for the future is laid out. You occasionally find the stumbling drunk, the so-called lady of the night, and even the police, adding to the spirit around Jenin’s. It’s about life, surrounded by streetlights, the wailing of sirens, and the sweet sounds of soul music. The exhibition is on view through March 31, by appointment only.

Artformz opening featuring Ramon Williams and PJ Mills 2/14/09

“Faith, Fear, and Fortune”
faith-fear-fortune
How Do You View Religion?
As Faith, As Fear of God, or As Placing a Bet on Fortune?
Artformz is pleased to announce the opening of its February exhibit
Featuring the work of
Ramon Williams and PJ Mills
With a special performance by:
Philosopher Enrique Paterson as part of the artist’s Collaborative Installation
“One Question – One Answer”

Join the artists this Saturday, February 14, 2009 at the Opening Reception: 7-10 pm

About the Exhibit:

Religion and faith are the subjects of lectures, books, artwork, and architectural monuments. In the gallery’s February show artists Mills (Irish-American) and Williams (Cuban-American) exhibit haunting interpretations of this theme flowing pervasively throughout much of each artist’s work. The imagery and objects are observations on the condition of contemporary society, filtered through each artist’s ethnic experience that has led to the creation of each one’s visual vocabulary. Mills sees religions as “predominately mechanisms for family/social control.” and Williams as “instruments of faith,” to help “look forward beyond that existence of fear and solitude.”

Even as the resulting works follow personal and private interpretations on the theme, and are separate stories, they are not – as evidenced in the collaborative “Botánica” installation titled “One Question, One Answer” assembled in the project room. The artists invite visitors to enter – one by one – where they may find, as Williams states: “the chance of grasping the meaning in the actual frailness of the merchandise and its hopeful consumer.” Enrique Patterson, philosopher, essayist, journalist, political analyst, radio talk show host, and in this case oracle, offers one “true” answer to each guest’s question on “The Politics of Faith or The Faith of Politics”.

PJ Mills exhibits 2 large banner style photographs each measuring 84″ high by 120″ wide. His images are evocative, dark interpretations of a personal struggle with what he may deem his own destiny. His ideas and images are governed by the paradoxes created by old family traditions and gained intellect.

Ramon Williams shows a variety of works that interpret a very different tradition. His view is one of the mystical and healing power of religions. However, one does not miss the scrutiny given to modern means of dissemination. He work neither judges nor criticizes society’s methods yet observes with humor the sometimes profit driven marketing of hope.

The exhibit runs from Feb. 14, 2009 – March 9, 2009

David Castillo Gallery presents Tom Scicluna’s Pinched & Guido Albi-Marini’s Calor 2/14/09

David Castillo Annex: Tom Scicluna, Pinched
David Castillo Gallery: Guido Albi-Marini, Calor

Tom Scicluna
Pinched
David Castillo Annex
2234 NW 2nd Avenue, Miami
February 14 – March 7, 2009
Reception February 14, 7-10
David Castillo Annex is proud to present Tom Scicluna’s site-specific installation, Pinched.

Working with construction-ready materials, Scicluna implements an I-beam arrangement as a productive pause. The sprawling composition animates the exhibition space, dominating the floor as imminently as the financial real estate crisis in the US, and as carefully as the Bauhaus movement sought social redemption in the rigor of aestheticism. The complacency of Scicluna’s exaggerated arrangement, seemingly grafted from the site itself, also bears traces of ironic Absurdism; the viewer’s capacity to swallow art as architecture becomes both graceful in its democracy and frightening in its unquestioned breadth.

Scicluna believes in situational place and artistic situation. By harnessing the meeting of materials, the ability of mass to displace mass, the coerciveness of perspective, and the potential energy of balance, Pinched engages sensationalists and scrutinizers with the acutest attention.

Tom Scicluna was born in London in 1974 and lives and works in Miami. Recent group shows include Rendez-Vous ’08, Musée d’Art Contemporain de Lyon, France, in conjunction with the Moore Space European Residency Program; Tuttle, David Castillo Gallery (2008); and Shadows, Disappearances and Illusions, Miami Art Museum (2008).

Guido Albi-Marini
Calor
David Castillo Gallery
2234 NW 2nd Avenue, Miami
February 14 – March 7, 2009
Reception February 14, 7-10 pm

In the David Castillo Gallery, Guido Albi- Marini’s Calor philosophises that the eye of the camera sees what exists, while the eye of the artist sees meanings as unrefined as sugar in its raw form. The documentary, taciturn power of Albi-Marini’s images give voice to traders of the Muslim Agricultural Revolution, slave laborers of the Caribbean, and steam engineers of the Industrial Age. Sugar has crystallized the history of the world’s greatest advancements and atrocities. “Calor,” the entomology of ” calorie,” connects to “heat” in Latin and related languages. Sugar’s harmful caloric makeup and contentious politics remain hot topics that cannot be destroyed as easily as farmers burn sugarcane to reduce the amount of leafy material before processing.

Albi-Marini’s photographs not only call to mind destruction and vigilance, but the fuel of economy, consumption of resources, expense of labor, and exchange of culture. From its ashes rise universal enjoyment and consequence. Albi-Marini allows the viewer to understand sugarcane as a perennial, continuing to colonize contemporary society’s emotional psyche and physical addictions. Historical and medical trends seem to urge that burning sugarcane should be understood as an act of protest. However, from the “sugar nips” of 18th century London to the Pez dispensers of today, sugar continues to coat the palms of the people, and the people remain in the palms of corporate hands.

Guido Albi-Marini was born in Naples, Italy in 1955 and lives and works primarily in Miami. Albi-Marini was a pupil of the Neapolitan salons frequented by artists and architects during the 1960s and 70s. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and is in many important public and private collections.

David Castillo Gallery announces John Bailly’s Bloody Noses and Cracked Crowns in the Project Room. Bailly’s oil paintings and works on paper accumulate physical manifestations of states of mind. Often brooding and tumultuous, Bailly’s work seems to suggest the struggle for communication, fluidity of identity, and human empathy through a dense language of bridges, cityscapes, ancient geography, and self-annihilation. Ultimately, Bailly uses abstraction and Dadaist technique to empower the viewer to construct meaning in a world where objects and events possess no true nature.

John Bailly was born in Slough, Buckinghamshire, and raised in Paris, Aix-les-Bains, Long Island, Lyon, and Miami. He received his MFA in painting and printmaking from Yale University in 1993, and is a Fellow of The Honors College at Florida International University. His work has been exhibited at University of Maine Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville, Texas State University, and other institutions throughout the US. In 2006 Bailly was awarded the South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship for Visual and Media Artists, and a State of Florida Individual Artist Grant.

Art of Deception Exhibit at Lurie – Kavachnina Gallery 2/14/09

rt of Deception
abstract and ethnic paintings and sculptures
Terence Carr (Kenya), Dee Sands (Germany), John LaHuis (USA), KX2 (USA)
February 14 – March 11, 2009
Opening Reception: Feb 14, 2009 / 7:00 pm – 11:00 pm

Half-true, half –false… How vulnerable we are to deceit? Are we the victims or the perpetrators? Or even more; is it correct to call it deceit or just a difference in personal perception?

However you wish to view it, Art of Deception with artists Terence Carr (Kenya), Dee Sands (Germany), John LaHuis (USA) and KX2 (an artistic collaboration between sisters Ruth Avra and Dana Lynn Keinman) promises to be an entertaining and eye opening exhibition, in which the unifying theme is the duality and polarity in art with equally valid meanings; good versus bad, beauty versus ugliness, love versus hate, what you see might not be the same as what another person sees.

The opening reception will be held on February 14 from 7:00 to 11:00 pm at LURIE – KAVACHNINA GALLERY located in Miami’s Wynwood Art District at 46 NW 36 St.. Guest will be able to meet the artists, enjoy music and light refreshments. Lombardi Properties Hosts Inaugural Life Is Art Miami Featured Artist Fair

www.lifeisartfest.org

Miami, FL, January 27, 2009 – The Miami art scene is exploding. America’s largest art week recently passed, surrounding Art Basel Miami Beach, featuring dozens of art fairs and tens of thousands of art patrons. The monthly art walks all across Miami bustle with more and more people, where just a few years ago they were quiet. Art galleries are springing up all across the city. People travel from all over the world to discover what we already know: Miami, the Magic City, has a creative soul.

David Lombardi, head of Lombardi Properties has seen this phenomenon and made a bold move to support the bourgeoning art scene. Lombardi Properties will be the host sponsor for the inaugural Life Is Art Miami Featured Artist Fair on March 7th at their 1926 Seminole Building property at 120 NW 25th Street in the fast growing Wynwood Arts District.

Life Is Art is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and promoting the arts in Miami and the surrounding area. They are producing their first art fair developed to feature Miami and south Florida based artists. Future projects include regular arts events, as well as an arts incubator.

Co-founder James Echols said, “We have seen such a growth of gifted artists in Miami, yet there seems to be a lack of focus on our own locals.” The other fairs and galleries feature artists from all over the world, which is a wonderful thing. “But, we have such talent in our own back yard that we decided that there should be a fair with a Miami focus,” Echols said.

Echols and partner and co-founder, Annette Peikert, assembled a group of fellow Miami artists and art lovers to produce the event.

R. E. Sanchez, working Miami artist and art educator, is the Artistic Director. His ties to the artist community and his knowledge of art promise to bring excellent work to the fair.

Talmage Thornhill was chosen as the Marketing Director for her long experience in the entertainment and nightlife business. She also brings a degree in the fine art of ballet, which informs her artistic sensibilities.

Susan J. Lewis brings her many years as a musician, DJ, and producer to her position as Music Director. She is also heading up the environmental aspect of the event, with her five years of professional work in environmental conservation. She is currently director of an environmental education center in Miami, is an active member of various environmental organizations, and holds a graduate degree in environmental education, management and conservation.

Financial Director Adriana De Welde has many years experience as a financial analyst and is a lifelong art lover, as well as an amateur filmmaker. Her keen business sense provides a stable base from which to build an efficient organization.

Co-founders Annette Peikert and James Echols have been involved in event production for years, having produced their own events, as well as working with numerous others. They are long time art lovers, having collected since they were in college.

Artists interested in participating should contact the organization through the website, www.lifeisartfest.org.

Migration. Joe Concra and Kevin Paulsen
Migration, rich surfaces of contrasting themes and styles by Joe Concra and Kevin Paulsen; also on view Robert Swedroe and Mike Tesch

Joe Concra
His painting seem to emerge from a world not known, one that is more fantastical and other wprldly. His wprk is engaging and playful yet conveys an underlying depth and reflection.

Mike Tesch
Mike Tesch’s work is alive, bursting with color, makes a statement, is stimulating and humorous. Tesch believes art should contain a point of view that reveals something about the artist and opens a window for a new kind of comprehension by its viewers. Tesch is a soft spoken man with a bold stroke of the brush and a sharp wit that resonates not only in his paintings but throughout his powerful quote collection entitled,”Quotes”. He professes to the theory–When in doubt, risk it.

Robert M. Swedroe
Collages and Installation.
Kelley Roy Gallery hosts a show featuring the compelling, spirited three dimensional assemblages of Miami artist and architect Robert M. Swedroe. The exhibition consists of the artist’s vividly colored collages, ranging from the whimsical to the dark, and including an imposing eight feet by ten feet floor installation.

Kevin Paulsen
His painting depict lush, paradisiacal trees and semi-mythical creatures, sweeping the viewer into a semi-tropical realm that evokes a sense of myth and connection to history.

John Henry: Unveiled Sculpture
The Chattanooga-based artist has a long-standing interest in the concept of works of art encompassing large tracts of land, a process also embraced by Jean Claude and Christo. Henry’s works grace numerous important museums, corporate, public and private collections as well as the collections of many American, European and Asian municipalities. Internationally recognizable since the early 1960s, his works range in scale from small tabletop pieces to some of the largest contemporary metal sculpture in the world. His recent exhibitions of works include New Monuments at the Laumeier Sculpture Park in St. Louis, Missouri; Back on the Plaza on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile; In the Shadow of the Alps at Art-St-Urban in St. Urban, Switzerland; OPEN 2007 in Venice, Italy; ODYSSEY at Purdue University, North Central campus in Westville, Indiana; the 2006 Vancouver Biennale in British Columbia, and the 2007 Sarasota Season of Sculpture in Sarasota, Florida.

Dorsch Gallery News:
On Sat. Jan. 17, 3-5pm, we will present Shapeshifte*d, the curatorial response of 31 FIU Honors College students in John Bailley’s Aesthetics and Values class to Shapeshifter. With Shapeshifte*d, the Class will change the installation of the exhibition and add to it, seeking to question the way curation can affect the way one sees or thinks about a work of art.

On Sat., Jan. 31, 7-10pm, Dorsch Gallery presents A Perfect Human, a group show curated by Milena Hoegsberg and Megha Ralapati. The show’s title and theme are inpsired by Joergen Leth’s short film, The Perfect Human (1967), which will be on view in the exhibition.

Dorsch Gallery artists have shows in California and New York. Arnold Mesches will have Paintings from his Coming Attractions series in a solo show at the Santa Monica Museum of Art this January. Ralph Provisero and Claudia Scalise will present work in a group exhibition at Melissa Morgan Fine Arts in Palm Desert, California. Recognized for their wry wit, works from Kyle Trowbridge’s Pleasure Seeker series, some of which are on view in Shapeshifter, will travel to New York for a group exhibition at Daneyal Mahmood Gallery in January 2009.
Dorsch Gallery is located at 151 NW 24 St, Miami, FL. Visit dorschgallery.com or call 305-576-1278 for more information.

FIU Honors College Class Curates Show at Dorsch Gallery Opening 1/17/09

On Saturday, January 17, 2009, 3-5 pm, Dorsch Gallery will have an opening of Shapeshifterd. The Aesthetics & Values Class from the Honors College at Florida International University (FIU) curates this group exhibition in collaboration with Dorsch Gallery. With Shapeshifterd, the Class responds substantively to the previous month’s exhibition, Shapeshifter. The Class will change the installation of the exhibition and add to it, seeking to question the way curation can affect the way one sees or thinks about a work of art. The exhibition includes work in several media, including paintings, video, projection, sculpture, and mixed media, by Jenny Brillhart, Elisabeth Condon, Robin Griffiths, Richard Haden, Michelle Hailey, m lafille, Martin Murphy, Ralph Provisero, John Sanchez and Kyle Trowbridge.

The Aesthetics & Values Class from the Honors College at FIU is taught by John Bailly. Students are Samantha Banal, Robert Cascella, Stella Concepcion, Linda De La Paz, Noel Deckert, Moises Enghelberg, Ernesto Fernandez, Gisell Fiat, Monica Font, Adriano Froes, Gabriela Garcia, Dahiana Gil, Thomas Johnson, Yesica Laver, Linda Lee, Michael Lopez, Jacqueline Lorenzo, Linda Martin, Priscila Mojica, Ana-Sofia Navarrete, Rozina Partabi, Jairo Pava, Melissa Pita, Gaudry Puechavy, Mariana Restrepo, Sergio Rioseco, Miryam Rodriguez, Ashley Rousseau, Nalisa Saati, Frances Sanchez, and Alejandro Stein.

Dorsch Gallery is located at 151 NW 24 Street, Miami, FL.
Contact us at 305-576-1278 or tyler@dorschgallery.com
We are open Tuesday-Saturday 11-6pm. For more information, see dorschgallery.com.

Shapeshifterd responds to the previous exhibition, which explored the idea that change can come in many guises, some formal and other formative. Collaborating with this FIU class continues Dorsch Gallery’s effort to further the discursive fabric of the art scene in Miami.

About Dorsch Gallery
Since 1993, Dorsch Gallery has nurtured the development of its artists through both personal and professional relationships. In the process, the gallery’s founder Brook Dorsch learned a great deal about these artists’ practices. In keeping with this dig-deep philosophy, Dorsch and his wife, Tyler, organize events that allow viewers a glimpse into what goes into the art. In order to provide its artists with new contexts, Dorsch Gallery strives to expand the presence of these artists’ work nationally and internationally. Under the aegis of the “new contexts” philosophy, Dorsch Gallery will also invite visiting curators and artists to do work at the gallery, creating an exchange of ideas and, of course, ways of looking and doing. To enrich this exchange, supplementary writings and events are encouraged, reflecting investment and belief in the art shown here. As Dorsch Gallery has long maintained a connection to the arts scene at large, the Dorsches will continue to involve the gallery in Tigertail Productions, Interdisciplinary Sound Arts Workshop, Dixie Dingo Film Festival and other alternative events. Such extensions further engender aesthetic and conceptual creativity, fostering more critical art making, viewing and discourse. Dorsch Gallery is located in the heart of Wynwood at 151 NW 24th Street.

David Castillo Gallery closing reception Five Solo Shows & Troglodytes see better in the dark 1/10/09

David Castillo Presents
David Castillo Gallery: Five Solo Shows
David Castillo Annex: Troglodytes see better in the dark

http://www.davidcastillogallery.com/
Five Solo Shows
David Castillo Gallery
2234 NW 2nd Avenue, Miami
January 10 – February 7, 2009
Closing Reception January 10, 7-10 pm

In the main gallery, David Castillo Gallery exhibits new work by gallery artists Aramis Gutierrez, Glexis Novoa, Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova, Frances Trombly, and Wendy Wischer in Five Solo Shows.

For over a decade, Wendy Wischer has camped at the intersection of solaced nature and societal technology, creating introspective works in sound, light, and sculpture. Wischer’s work, concerned with how a single set of principles can be found throughout the universe, becomes both soothing and provocative in our modern time of despair. Glexis Novoa renders cityscapes and their instruments of conflict like peering into a curio cabinet and coming face-to-horizon with societal apocalypse in miniature. His graphite drawings on marble are almost voyeuristic in their detail.

Aramis Gutierrez’s oil paintings unload personal and historic conflict on an epic scale. His storytelling equates sun blisters and love pains, labyrinthine woods and Evolutionary Psychology. Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova challenges the absoluteness of stories associated with our utilization and memory of everyday objects. Frances Trombly also retells stories of domesticity in a voice laced with feminist awareness. Trombly employs traditionally effeminate techniques to turn new scrutiny upon daily life.

Troglodytes see better in the dark
David Castillo Annex
2234 NW 2nd Avenue, Miami
January 10 – February 7, 2009
Closing Reception January 10, 7-10 pm

David Castillo Annex, immediately adjacent to the main gallery, presents its inaugural exhibition, Troglodytes see better in the dark, with works by Jesse Bercowetz, Stephan Goldrajch, Andrew Guenther, The Icelandic Love Corporation, Dan Kopp, Susan Lee-Chun, Pepe Mar, Tiffany Pollack, Michael Velliquette, and Jaimie Warren.

From the shadowy libido of Bercowetz’s organic assemblages, Mar’s comic nightmare scaffolding, and Velliquette’s paper creatures; within the deep space of Guenther’s aliens and the depths of Lee-Chun’s cultural identities; behind Warren’s theatrical make-up and Goldrajch’s canopic masks; with the dusk of Kopp’s neon apocalypse, the dawn of Pollack’s prehistoric vegetation, and the Nordic perspective of The Icelandic Love Corporation; down the fathoms of our subcultures and psyches live creaturely sensibilities with the night vision to transcend the modern conflict of our waking lives.

The works in Troglodytes see better in the dark possess the valor to see what less absurd beings cannot: humor, hope, community, and spirituality in socio-political darkness. Some troglodytes, such as Bercowetz’s unwieldy amalgamations cobbled together with cable and epoxy, come from chaos. Some, such as Mar’s sculptures inspired by electronic music and pop consumerism and Warren’s disguised self-portraits, come from cult culture. Some, such as Velliquette’s hand-cut paper dioramas and Lee- Chun’s bifurcated racial personas, come from the rituals of otherness. Seen together, one develops the impression that these troglodytes are social creatures, and their artists’ emphasis on crafts and craftsmanship create a valuable nostalgia for epochs when humans lived communally with nature and one another. Regardless from under which underbelly these troglodytes crawl, all are beacons of The Icelandic Love Corporation’s belief that, even in the face of nihilism, inhibitions, and the technological prowess of post-postmodernism, “love redeems us all.”

One Man Show
TONY CHIMENTO
opening at
MUSEO VAULT PROJECT ROOM
346 NW 29TH ST
MIAMI FL 33127
305-987-4722

Tony Chimento will debut a number of never before seen new paintings along with a small number of very special paintings dating as far back as 1979 chosen by the artist. This will be only the second time Mr. Chimento has mounted a one man gallery show here in Miami.

CLICK HERE TO PREVIEW SHOW ONLINE

Tony Chimento’s career as a realist painter has spanned the last 30 years. After arriving from the northeast, he built his reputation at Art Center/South Florida. He served on their board of directors and was vice chair of the Art Center Board for many years. Presently Mr. Chimento lives and works in the Wynwood Arts District.

Most recently Mr. Chimento has been the recipient of a $25,000.00 2008 Pollock-Krasner Award for artistic merit. He is best known for his extremely detailed and complex still life scenes of amazing detail and clarity. Mr. Chimento has shown in numerous one man shows and been chosen for regional and national juried shows and competitions.

He has been chosen twice as a winner in the “New American Paintings” competition for the Southern Region. The Winsor and Newton Company chose his work as the winning entry in their 3rd Annual Competition. He has been written about in articles in various publications including American Artist Magazine and the New York Times.

Other awards include The New York Graphic Society Award at the National Academy of Design Show in NYC, and the Grand Prize for painting in the prestigious Silvermine Guild Center for the Arts Competition. He has been chosen for awards by jurors like Ted Stebbins, Curator of Paintings, Boston Museum, Vivian Raynor, Art Critic, New York Times, and John I H Baur, Director Emeritus, Whitney Museum of Art, NYC.

Critic Hilton Kramer in reviewing a show for the New York Times containing Mr. Chimento’s work commented in a review: “…still, there are painting of some interest here by artists who were new to this writer…. Tony Chimento’s “Sunday Afternoon” is a solid realist work.”

In one of the first reviews of his work, Sylvia Day writes in Lifestyle Magazine: “My first introduction to Chimento’s work was at a show at the Woodstock Artist’s Association. There…was a large canvas which made an immediate impression of elegance and uncommon technique…. Chimento paints large canvases, their dramatic subjectmatter and impeccable draughtsmanship a feast for the eye. He owns an original an unmistakably unique style.

The word paraphernalia has evolved over time. What is now loosely defined as “equipment, apparatus or furnishing used in or necessary for a particular activity”, historically referred to a bride’s property beyond her dowry. Paraphernalia as a word, has taken a new connotation and has become more intertwined with the realm of taboo. Paraphernalia is a means to an end, and is applicable in almost every aspect of life.

The humorous, historical, political and personal aspects of the word or idea of “paraphernalia” is explored in the paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations, video and photography in this nationally juried exhibition.

The Garden and Grotto of Manifest Destiny
From the Burning Man Festival in the Black Rock desert of Nevada, to the Bakehouse Art Complex here in Miami, artist Randy Polumbo has taken his 30 foot installation across the country. The grotto will be on display in the main parking lot of the Bakehouse from Thursday, December 4th through January 25th, 2009.
Come experience this interactive installation! A flower field comprised of bizarre satellite-shaped blossoms gathered around and inside a modified shipping container lures the viewer into a grotto. These techno-organic LED illuminated flowers with solar panel petals and stamens are made of softly glowing sex toys. Set in the BAC parking lot, this modified ARMY container, punctured with baby bottle nipples cast out of recycled glass amid a pollination frenzy of solar flowers, creates a soft glowing subconscious garden. Visitors become pollinators, tempted by the glass nipples to penetrate the grotto.

60+ Artist Studios
BAC artists will open their studios to the public for this event.

LIPSTICK BY ROSARIO BOND

Rosario Bond proposes neo-expressionistic paintings made out of thick layers of impasto, set over multiple drippings, disrupted lines, and child-like figures where individuals, objects, and nature intertwine in voracious relationships. LIPSTICK depicts parodies of icons, such as rock stars, models, and other iconic portraits represented through gestural brushstrokes and a bright and intense palette. Bond dislocates the modern narrative, dismantling logic and linearity in the character’s connections in the scene. She tackles and traps her figures in a challenging Meta discourse dominated by parody and humor.

Her paintings are collections of personal mythologies combined with critical imagery, posed over disrupted settings and dislocated compositions inhabited by unusual and serie objects. Her works are a monumental palimpsest of delirious and contrasting characters that allude to the feminine condition.

In her hectic and fevered paintings, full of hallucinating entities transported by rambling composition and restless scribbling lines, Bond establishes a radical dialogue with the Contemporary German neo-expressionists.

The painting Lipstick, 2008 depicts three women’s faces with sarcastic expressions. The one at the left center shows her sensuous red lips collated over the canvas, creating a sense of derision and a burlesque atmosphere. The picture plane is delimitated by two thin legs balance on a woman’s red heels, in a metaphorical allusion of an exaggerated and stereotyped femininity. The blue and turquoise pastel colors point out to sarcastic references to the feminine condition. The dominant scribbling lines on the canvas disfigure and distort shapes and forms, generating a chaotic composition. In Lipstick, Bond satirizes on the social identity of women. In Bunny Girl, 2008 the artist again refers to the feminine condition. The Bunny Girl is cynically outlined on the right side of the composition; in half body shaped by fuzzy colors and disrupted lines, she is a mutant and critical being. One of Bond’s main concerns is the status of women. In the painting Shopping Spree, 2008 Bond depicts a delirious shopping spree of three women, the one in the middle holding a Prada purse as a trophy. It is dominated by a rough composition and a disorderly combination of figures; the women are surrounded by a chaotic world. The work alludes to the wild consumerism of the day among women. In Peacock Dancers, 2007 two stylized feminine figures pose as cheerful dancers surrounded in festive feathers . Disruptive broken lines saturate the highly dramatic scene. Again, Bond’s strong allusions to critical femininity are present.

The canvas Teddy Bear and His Friends, 2008 shows numerous child like figures, distorted and covered by extreme drippings, in high contrasting yellows, reds and blues. There is a highly saturated composition crowed with curvilinear traits and irregular spots and outlines. Bond’s approach to the works gives prevalence to feelings and moods rather than to an objective realistic representation. Spontaneous lines and forms give birth to imaginary entities that relate to childhood memories infused with a comedic stanza. Bond proposes a sarcastic Teddy Bear’s vision surrounded by multiple mordant creatures that sharply stare at us as an incisive allusion to infancy.

In the work Family Furies, 2008 Bond presents two child like beings outlined in green colors and delineated through irregular contours. Multiple scribbled lines sketch the body and face; the deeply emotional eyes express sadness, concern, and isolation as humanized references – perhaps in allusion to a personal mythology or an autobiographical stance. In The Gallerist, 2008 Bond pursues the same approach of using collected memories on which to base her paintings. A derisive goat’s face and a comical blue visage stand over a crowed landscape of imaginary and distorted flowers, rivers, and plants. Here, the artist mockingly alludes to today’s complex artist-gallery relationship . Again, irregular outlines, multiple drippings, color spots and disfigured entities profile the mordant Bond’s approach to painting.

Materia Gris, 2007 exhibits a gigantic black and white dream landscape with curious flowers and segments of imaginary architectures. The calm atmosphere is disrupted by the organic violent lines of plants, and by the asymmetric composition that dislocates the realistic order of elements. This painting becomes a very peculiar work in this show. Bond has eliminated all beings and switched to a reflection on nature.

Bond’s provocative and disruptive paintings radically distanced from beauty and harmony establish an artistic connection to the highly politicized German Neue Wilde movement. In the rough approach of Jonathan Meese, Andre Butzer and Albert Oehlen, Bond offers an abysal reflection of our unsettling world.

Milagros Bello, Ph.D.
Curator of the show.

December 3rd-7th
noon to 8pm
The exhibition runs until December 19th by appointment only

Untitled # 44. 48″ X 72″ Mixed media on canvas 2008

In the series Energies Pablo Contrisciani’s paintings are the representation of different kind of moods altogether inside of one frame. They have an intense and sensual sense of unity. The shapes had color that was partly knocked down, but mostly electric, and they were improvised and spontaneous but at the same time precise.
The paintings play between these two elements: shape and color. Sometimes they merge, and sometimes there is a tension between them. This play in tension between pictorial surfaces and applied materials creates complex and straightforward layers of expressive abstractions.
These series of paintings unifies oppositions and energizes a blend of rational and emotional notions. They juxtapose humble elements with big gestures and make references to pop culture, to spiritual narratives and to some historical concepts.

Miami, FL 33127

Opening Reception December 5th , 7 – 9 PM
The Fredric Snitzer Gallery is
pleased to present DEATH BY BASEL, an exhibition featuring artists from Japan, France, Norway and the US. The exhibition, selected by Agatha Wara and Antonin Gaultier, will coincide with this year’s Art Basel Miami Beach, from December 2 – 7, 2008.

The who-done-it of the Miami art week, or more importantly, what has died or is in the process of coming to an end? Death by Basel is a reaction to the overwhelming commercialization of the art space.

Basel is a symbol of something much greater happening today, the artists in this exhibition are all creating new works exploring themes of excess, consumption, the relation between art and money, auto-destruction, and of course – death. The artists approach these themes with mischievous beauty, questioning the very idea of doing a show during Art Basel Miami Beach.

The works will include video, sculpture and performances throughout the week of the exhibition with several artists exhibiting in the US for the first time.

Opening Reception for Paraphernalia at Bakehouse Art Complex 12/4/08

Opening Reception for Paraphernalia
December 4 from 6 to 10 p.m.

The Bakehouse Art Complex presents “Paraphernalia,” curated by Carol Damian, Peter Boswell and Bernice Steinbaum. The word paraphernalia has evolved over time. What is now loosely defined as “equipment, apparatus or furnishing used in or necessary for a particular activity”, historically referred to a bride’s property beyond her dowry. The humorous, historical, political and personal aspects of the word or idea of “paraphernalia” is explored in the paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations, video and photography in this nationally juried exhibition.

VIP Opening: Temple Steps
December 2 from 8 to 11 p.m.

Patrick Mimran’s “Temple Steps” photography exhibit will be presented by Hamburg Kennedy. Mimran, an installation artist best known for his “Billboard Project,” exhibits his most recent endeavor, a series of visually stunning, 8′ x 6′ photographs of escalators captured in Tokyo from 2006 to 2008. Titled “Temple Steps,” Mimran chose the name because he feels that “today’s malls are the new temple of the 21st century, and fashion a new God.” Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will be served.

Sunset Art Culture at D&G Art Gallery 12/5/08

http://www.dgfineart.com/

D & G Art Design Gallery is the result of combining years of experience, creating an exciting fusion of art and design in Miami. Its art department, known as D & G Fine Art, manages some of the most prominent and up-and-coming contemporary artists of this exciting field.

Gallery president, Erik Don, along with art director, Oswaldo Agudelo, has created a unique environment where both artists and collectors can come together. Here, it is not only about the economic benefits, but also about the sharing of ideas, making D & G Fine Art in Wynwood a cultural breeding ground where art can be freely expressed.

It is during this edition of Art Basel Miami Beach where well known artists in Latin America and Europe are solidifying their already recognized talent and D & G Fine Art is excited to bring some of the greatest emerging talents to Wynwood at 540 N.W. 28th Street.

Artist A/k/rona of Colombia will be showcased. With his surreal and abstract paintings, he has become a star among collectors in Dubai, where he was chosen as one of the best during the Emirates art fair.

Jorge Jimenez Deredia of Costa Rica will be showing his monumental sculptures. Jimenez Deredia has seen his works in Saint Peter’s Basilica, commissioned by the Vatican. During this year’s Basel, he will present his latest and most representative pieces.

Peruvian Paolo Cordano comes with his particular dose of abstract art, inspired by the pre-Columbian period. It is the force and impacts of his chosen color palette that identifies him as a great artist.

Marjolein van der Sluis of Holland is known for her subtle oneiric art and her particular use of pastels. For his part, Spaniard Ruperto Cabrera, uses the images of well known works of art and mutates them into a classic and modern mix, which has already taken him into some of the biggest auction houses.

Also from Spain is Pilar Cocero. She brings her singular vision of the world and its majestic landscapes, interpreted in her use of color and light.

Gustavo Duque, fresh off his recent successes in South and Central America, appears renewed and confident with his pieces, in which the horse serves as the central theme.

Eloisa Castellanos, of Cuba, appears with her altered states of consciousness and her Eastern influences. Always playful in her use of color, her work shows an almost monochrome scheme. This is in stark contrast to the works of Colombian Helbert Ortiz, for whom the warm and intense colors of his native land are the bases of his inspiration. Almost always using the female shape as an example of perfection, Ortiz incorporates it as his primal concept of beauty.

For the most demanding of collectors, Miami’s D & G Fine Art in Wynwood also features several pieces, such as “Revolution”, by Marc Chagall, “The Girl”, by Pierre Auguste Renoir, and “The Painter and his Muse”, by Pablo Picasso. It also features pieces by Maurice Utrillo, Norman Rockwell, Camille Pissarro and Alfred Sisley.

D & G Fine Art provides a variety of services. These include the rating, certification, investigation, printing and editing of books and lithographs. Additionally, it includes a successful guidance program for the buying and selling of artwork for collectors. D & G Fine Art is proud to provide investment expertise in this very sophisticated art investment medium.

All of the artists featured within D & G Fine Art are widely known and recognized for their trajectory, putting them side by side along many of the greats that can be found in some of the worlds most prestigious auction houses.

With the guidance of Oswaldo Agudelo, your visit to the gallery will not only be stepping into the world of art history. It will also be an opportunity to receive a complete assessment of how the art world works and what are the best investment options within this sophisticated and passionate trade.

Every year, Art Basel gauges what will be the next “Big Thing” in the art world in the coming months. D & G Fine Art finds itself in the privileged position of being a part of that process, making its mark at the highest of levels, both for artists and collectors.

PanamericanArtProjects during Art Basel 2008

Panamerican Art Projects presents three solo exhibitions featuring works by Francis Acea, Tracey Snelling and Ana Maria Pacheco in the project room.

Francis Acea (b. 1967, Havana, Cuba-lives in Miami, Florida) generally is commenting about the value of producing, and of making money, versus the real value. In a sense, Francis is testing the notion of invented value versus accumulated value. His work is filled with irony, as he is practically challenging the spectators, but at the same time appealing at their sense of humor. This is a highly seductive type of art that will appeal to a selective type of viewer.

Tracey Snelling (b.1970, Oakland, California- lives in Oakland, California) works with elements mainly from the advertising industry and the cinema. Many of her pieces are inspired by movies, especially from the fifties. She also takes elements from the architecture; bringing it to her pieces as photos or as scale models.

Ana Maria Pacheco (b. 1943, Goiánia, Brazil- lives in London, England). Best known for her life-like sculptures based on religious figures, Ana Maria is also an accomplished printmaker. The gallery is presenting her work ‘Dark Night of the Soul’, a sculptural installation, based on the life of St. Sebastian; the work expresses her reaction to the military dictatorship in Brazil during the 1960’s and 70’s. The installation is accompanied by drawings and prints.

CHRISTINA PETTERSSON – “WE ARE NO LONGER IN THE LAND OF THE LORDS” (DETAIL)
GRAPHITE ON PAPER, 86″ x 68″, 2008
“…The tale begins with Judith, a biblical heroine who saved her people by seducing and beheading the Assyrian general Holofernes. Like Salome and Lucretia, Judith was a popular subject during the Renaissance and Baroque era, which delighted in erotic and violent scenes. Dozens of artists from Botticelli to Caravaggio to Klimt depicted this woman who summed up that indefatigable brew of virtue and sexuality, a holy strumpet.

It has always been one of my favorite themes. Yet to speak the truth, I do not care in the least about the actual characters of Judith and Holofernes. I do not draw in order to make versions of exhausted themes. It is my own story, and the head I cut is history itself. The perfect murder. Sex and violence, naturally. The mood of exotic mystery still hangs in the air, a heavy breath lingering against the sword. Warm dark blood dripping down her belly. Marvel at the strange beauty of a severed head, contained within a drawing, and held up to the light like a glass of water. The narrative is long over. This is what I can do in a drawing, unencumbered by the perceived reality of time and place. This is drawing as potential memory, a way of summoning up an event before it has occurred, that more primal memory, spirit, breath force, nerve impulses, incantation; memory that breaks down barriers and imperiously remakes our settled way of seeing. The memory of no time. This violence would be gracious, clear and cool. Magnificent…”

Soldier Diaz: Length of Service Unknown
Soldier Billboard in Miami Wynwood District
Portraits of Soldiers by Suzanne Opton
A poignant and controversial art project is on view in Miami. It is part of the Soldier Billboard Project which has had a presence in five other cities since the fall. The soldier billboards have sparked a heated debate on the street and on the web with responses from the military and the public.
Artist Suzanne Opton has photographed soldiers between tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. Her portraits afford the viewer a very intimate and serious look at the young men and women who have put their lives at risk serving in the military. The results are haunting and when they appear on forty-eight foot billboards floating above the freeway in the light of day or eerily illuminated at night, they are riveting and mysterious.
Thousands of American Soldiers are returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. We may wonder what they saw, what they did and how their war experience has affected them as they return to civilian life. One of the soldiers, Cain Claxton, BNCOC Small Group Leader, was initially deployed for 120 days in Afghanistan and had only recently returned when his photo was taken: “I think it’s about being vulnerable. As a Soldier, I don’t want to ever look like that, but I’m more than a Soldier, I’m a husband and father. My kids don’t separate the two. ‘Daddy is almost always in his soldier clothes.’”
Five arts organizations have sponsored the Soldier Billboards launching with the start of the Democratic National Convention by the Museum of Contemporary Art in Denver. Forecast Public Art in St. Paul Minnesota put up one board during the Republican National Convention. DiverseWorks sponsored two boards in Houston and the Atlanta Center for Contemporary Art sponsored a board through the elections in November. Skylab/the Shelf in Columbus, Ohio had three soldier billboards up before the elections.
The Soldier Billboard Project is supported by the Fledgling Fund, CrossCurrents Foundation, the Cummings Foundation and private donors. The New York Foundation for the Arts is the fiscal sponsor.

Suzanne Opton’s artwork can be found in collections in the US and Europe including the Cleveland Museum of Art, Austin Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and the Musée de l’Eysée, Lausanne. Switzerland.

Outside Lot: The Garden and Grotto of Manifest Destiny

OPENING RECEPTION: DECEMBER 4th, 2008 6-10pm
on view until January 25th, 2009

David Castillo Presents
Art Basel Miami Beach: Quisqueya Henriquez
David Castillo Gallery: Five Solo Shows
David Castillo Annex: Troglodytes see better in the dark

Quisqueya Henriquez
Collage Made According to the Laws of Change
Art Basel Miami Beach, Art Positions Booth P2
Collins Avenue between 21st and 22nd Street, Miami Beach
December 4 – December 7, 2008

David Castillo Gallery is proud to present Collage Made According to the Laws of Change, a solo show by Quisqueya Henriquez at Art Basel Miami Beach, Art Positions Booth P2. In dissecting a sinewy bicep or the angle of a bat against the sky from newspaper cutouts, Henriquez creates collaged figures bordering on the mythical, surreal, and grotesque. Her works display hyperbolic elements of masculinity, power, and dexterity; the object referent is replaced by a satire of the velocity of cultural stereotypes, namely fetishized abilities of Latin Americans. The individual identities of Henriquez’s characters are as distorted as the misperceptions germinated by spectators. Prompted by her Cuban- Dominican heritage, Henriquez stages an intervention of transnational honesty in aesthetics that would make George Grosz blush.

The artist’s physical hybrids also composite high art practice and a colloquial pastime. Ten collage works are based on Seurat’s Woman Singing in a Café Chantant. The shared title of her collages, Collage Made According to the Laws of Change, puns Hans Arp’s oft-utilized Collage Made According to the Laws of Chance. By evoking deliberate change rather than chance in the face of Art History, Henriquez suggests that pictorial representations contain the power to deflate as much as aggravate cultural one- dimensionality.

Henriquez transforms the Art Positions container’s interior with a site-specific installation using a textile pattern created by Danish architect Arne Jacobsen, further embedding her collage works in European Art History and contrasting the lack of infrastructure of many nations outside of the European context. Henriquez is above all a practitioner who asks her audience not only to recognize beautiful art and ugly stereotypes, but engage in creating intertextuality between brown and white, reality and propaganda, formal and informal.

After graduating from the prestigious Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana in 1992, Henriquez has exhibited throughout Latin America, Europe, and the United States. Her work is in important private and public collections including El Museo del Barrio, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, FL; Miami Art Museum; Cintas Foundation, NY; Rhode Island School of Design; and Coleccion Patricia Phelps de Cisneros, NY, among many others. The September 2007 issue of ARTnews named Henriquez one of 25 art world trendsetters. Before traveling to the Miami Art Museum, Henriquez’s mid-career retrospective at the Bronx Museum of the Arts garnered a review in the New York Times.

Five Solo Shows
Aramis Gutierrez, Glexis Novoa, Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova, Frances Trombly, Wendy Wischer
David Castillo Gallery
2234 NW 2nd Avenue, Miami
December 1, 2008 – January 3, 2009
Reception December 6, 7 – 11 pm

Concurrently with our participation at Art Basel Miami Beach, David Castillo Gallery opens two exhibitions. In the main gallery, David Castillo presents new work by gallery artists Aramis Gutierrez, Glexis Novoa, Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova, Frances Trombly, and Wendy Wischer in Five Solo Shows.

Jesse Bercowetz, Stephan Goldrajch, Andrew Guenther, The Icelandic Love Corporation, Dan Kopp, Susan Lee-Chun, Pepe Mar, Tiffany Pollack, Michael Velliquette, Jaimie Warren
David Castillo Annex
2234 NW 2nd Avenue, Miami
December 1, 2008 – January 3, 2009
Reception December 6, 7 – 11 pm

David Castillo Annex, immediately adjacent to the main gallery, announces its inaugural exhibition, Troglodytes see better in the dark, with works by Jesse Bercowetz, Stephan Goldrajch, Andrew Guenther, The Icelandic Love Corporation, Dan Kopp, Susan Lee-Chun, Pepe Mar, Tiffany Pollack, Michael Velliquette, and Jaimie Warren.

Also on the program will be Green Family Foundation president Kimberly Green, Youth Expressions Executive Director Mike Rosenfeld and CBS4’s Jim Defede, all of whom will address the good work Youth Expressions has accomplished in and for the community.

Youth Expressions, the Little Haiti-based youth group that uses hip hop and spoken word to address social concerns, returns to Miami after performing in New York as part of this year’s Keep a Child Alive Summit, founded by Grammy Award winning recording artist Alicia Keys and activist Leigh Blake.

The Keep a Child Alive Student AIDS Summit was held after its star studded kick off, The Black Ball, with live performances by Alicia Keys, Justin Timberlake, Adele and Emmanuel Jal. This year’s Black Ball honorees included Queen Latifah, Simon Fuller and Jackie Branfield, Executive Director of Operation Bobbi Bear. Keep a Child Alive is a New York-based non-profit founded to address the AIDS pandemic ravaging Africa. Their work makes it possible for children and families to obtain life saving AIDS drugs and support for survival. (100% of their donations go to their cause.)

Youth Expressions was invited to perform after being recommended by Green Family Foundation president Kimberly Green, presenting sponsor of the Keep a Child Alive Student AIDS Summit, and featured speaker. The Green Family Foundation is a private non profit organization dedicated to supporting social programs that positively impact global health and alleviate poverty.

Youth Expressions will perform on Saturday, November 22, 2008 at 4:00pm at The White Room in Downtown Miami. They will perform the very same original piece they performed in New York, as well as other selections from the group’s repertoire.

Innovative “Art Video – New Media” Lounge Sponsored by Blackrock at Art Miami 2008
Art Miami 2008 (www.art-miami.com) will have a unique, Art Video–New Media Lounge organized by curator Asher Remy Toledo and sponsored by BlackRock, the nation’s largest asset manager. The 4,000-square-foot lounge will be the biggest at any of the Miami art fairs and will present work from six, major, international, art institutions including: The Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation, Miami, U.S. (CIFO), The Foundation for Art and Creative Technology in Liverpool, U.K. (FACT), The Palazzo Delle Arti Napoli, Naples, Italy (PAN), The Center for Contemporary Art, Tel Aviv, Israel (CCA), The Iberia Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing, China and The Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing, China. NMR Staging and Events will provide necessary equipment and technical assistance.

New media art emerged at the end of 20th century. It uses new technologies for critical and experimental purposes and is concerned with the cultural, political and aesthetic possibilities of these tools. The internet, advances in information technology and the familiarity of computers and video to a new generation of artists were the impetus for the current global, international new media movement.

Work presented at Art Miami by the participating museums and foundations will include:

• CIFO – Movement as Meditations on Modernity presents work by four artists with different approaches to movement as an inherent aspect to technology and as a meditation on modernity and modern art and its many traditions. Included are: Venezuelan artists Alexander Apóstol and Magdalena Fernandez, Brazilian artist Amilcar Packer and Colombian artist Ícaro Zorbar. Curated by Cecilia Fajardo-Hill.

• FACT – Fireworks, a high definition video by Nick Crowe and Ian Rawlinson made in 2007. Crowe and Rawlinson have collaborated since 1994. Their new video work focuses on the complexities of faith and the transformative potential of fire and light. Fireworks examine cultural conventions, tensions and misunderstandings. Curated by Heather Corcoran.

• PAN – Deadly Storms, Bjorn Melhus’s 2008 three-channel video installation is based on appropriated audio footage from the Fox News Network. Three identical talking heads on three vertical screens repeat phrases and statements of alert and threat. The repetitive elements are set to a rhythm and exercise a hypnotic power over the viewer. Curated Julia Draganovic.

• CCA – Dancing for Maya (2005) and Salame (2008), videos by artist Sigalit Landau explore the creative process in Tel Aviv. Curated by Manon Slome.

• IBERIA CENTER FOR CONTEMPORARY ART – Mist, a 2008 video animation by Zhang Xiatao. The artist uses the microscopic animal world to explore the angst and restlessness caused by the transformation of contemporary China. The country’s socialist heritage – what remains and what has died – and the Chinese identity in the context of globalization are examined. Curated by Carmen Blanquez.

• ULLENS CENTER FOR CONTEMPORARY ART – Long March! Restart – Feng Mengbo’s video game uses Chairman Mao’s famous Long March as a theme. The artist’s goal is to use the computer and digital technology to breakaway from accepted norms of the media art genre and to see if the viewer can complete the Long March sitting on a chair. Curated by Jerome Sans.

Raquelle Azran Vietnamese Fine Art at Art Asia Miami 2008

I am delighted to invite you to renew your acquaintance with fine art from Vietnam. In recent years I have curated shows in Europe (London and Amsterdam) and Vietnam, in museums and galleries, and it is with great pleasure that I now return to show in the US.

I will be exhibiting Vietnamese contemporary fine art in the coming weeks in two prestigious Florida shows. The first venue is Art Asia, a satellite fair of Art Basel in Miami and the dates are December 4-7th, 2008. The second venue is Palm Beach 3 Contemporary Art Fair, in Palm Beach and the dates are January 15-18th, 2009.

The four artists whose works I will be showing are: Vu Thu Hien, Dinh Thi Tham Poong, Dang Thao Ngoc and Trinh Tuan. Hien and Poong work in vibrant watercolor on handmade paper, Ngoc in bold oil on canvas, and Tuan in intricate lacquer on wood. Since you last saw and admired these artists’ work, their art and reputations have developed internationally.

Hien was awarded the Image of the Day by the London Times. Poong has appeared on the Arts Page of the International Herald Tribune. Both Hien and Poong were awarded Ford Foundation scholarships and have works in a two year US traveling museum exhibition.

Tuan has shown extensively in solo and group shows; Ngoc has exhibited twice in London.

A London exhibition including all four artists – Of This and Other Worlds – was listed by The Guardian as one of the five best exhibitions in London (alongside the Tate and Tate Modern shows – quite a compliment!) and reviewed in Artnews, the leading US art publication.

All four artists starred in a 2007 exhibition in the National Fine Arts Museum of Vietnam – Women Painters, Painted Women – featured in the International Herald Tribune.

Santiago Rubino – Solo Exhibition At Spinello Gallery: Primeval State Of Perfection 12/6/08

Spinello Gallery (2294 NW 2nd Avenue, Miami Florida – 33127) is pleased to present the highly anticipated solo exhibition, “Primeval State of Perfection,” by Miami’s very own breakout artist, Santiago Rubino. This will be Rubino’s second solo show with the gallery.

Santiago Rubino is a 29 year-old self-taught artist from Argentina. While previous bodies of work in which slick draftsman ship and the incorporation of antique frames and clocks have prompted eclectic comparisons with Victorian England and Tim Burton, Rubino’s latest series evokes Ancient Egypt.

Simultaneously remaining faithful to his street art background, these latest works make a departure from miniature elaborate bic renderings to large works that encompass sensitive treatments of formal elements, mathematic precision and scholarly symbolism. Executed with Rubino’s signature stylistic elegance, the works describe a world where myth and symmetry exist on the same plane. By entwining the past with future worlds that glean inspiration from the artist’s affinity with ancient ideologies; Rubino conveys a vision that endures the strain of an ever changing humanity.

Combining a masterful hand with narrative themes, pokerfaced Godesses and Dungeness touting anything from ball gowns to bondage gear Rubino gives his works an ageless value. Committed to sepia toned paper in black graphite, his subjects are often dramatically situated, yet they themselves convey an impassive, fatalistic calm. Seemingly absorbed by notions of status, conscience and circumstance, they pose, recalling man’s decadent malevolence, as if in a dream.

Scented with diverse aspects of modern culture, these pensive and melancholy creatures preside over barren environments; the juxtaposition of their stoicism and the delicate nature of their execution afford an almost maudlin air, which draws the viewer in.
Exhibition through January 3rd, 2009.

César Paternosto
Born in Argentina in 1931, César Paternosto has exhibited widely in Latin America and abroad. Since he began working as an artist in the early 1960s, Paternosto has been in the vanguard of abstraction in Latin America. An expert on the symbolic systems of Pre-Columbian civilizations, Paternosto has used his own photography and drawings to document and analyze the ancient remains of the region. Paternosto’s exploration of Amerindian abstraction has fueled his artistic work of the last twenty years.

“[…] Ever since the early 1930s, when Alexander Calder visited Piet Mondrian’s studio and had that marvelous vision of imagining his neat rectangles as if they were flying through space, nobody had achieved a similar effect to the one conceived and executed by Paternosto with his pictures painted on the sides of the canvas, with the resulting effect described earlier, of glowing weightlessness.”(Francisco Calvo Serraller, The Edge of Light, in César Paternosto, exhibition catalogue; Segovia: Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Esteban Vicente, 2004.)

I’M KEEPING AN EYE ON YOU

Aqua Art Miami, Wynwood

Through personal, established relationships, casual encounters, forced institutional interactions, or contact from a safe distance, we often overstep our boundaries. Whether we are conscious or not of our boundary breaking, we are all guilty at one time or another of intruding into other people’s lives and space. What may pass as uneventful for one individual may be the cause of great anxiety and fear for another. I’m Keeping an Eye on You explores the broad and lasting effects of our curiosity and intrusions upon others.

Artists featured in I’m Keeping an Eye on You include: Mounira Al Solh (Amsterdam/Beirut), Rachel Garfield (London), Charlotte Ginsborg (London), Pia Greschner (Berlin), Myung-Soo Kim (Tempe), Yaron Lapid (London), Jeff Luckey (New York/Berlin), Johnna MacArthur (Los Angeles), Michael Mohan (Los Angeles), Corinna Schnitt (Hamburg).

Following the Aqua Art Miami Video Project Space premiere I’m Keeping an Eye on You debuts as full exhibition at Arizona State University Art Museum in Fall of 2009

This project is generously made possible by Aqua Art Miami http://aquaartmiami.com and Friends of the Arizona State University Art Museum

Electro Strings event will feature the Miami-based viola virtuoso Laura Wilcox and the up and coming banjo/electronics master James Moore from New York.

Canadian-American violist, LAURA WILCOX has performed throughout Canada, the United States and in Europe and South America as a recitalist, soloist with orchestras, and in numerous chamber ensembles. A passion and commitment for unveiling the obscure, reviving the “living” classics, and in premiering new musical works, Laura has collaborated in many crossover musical and artistic ventures with international performers and composers from North America, Asia, Europe, Central and South America. The Toronto Star wrote about her recent Aeternalis Voyage CD: “an eloquent premiere…by the brilliant Laura Wilcox as soloist.”

Tonight, Laura will present three pieces for viola and electronics by Orlando Garcia, Juraj Kojs, and Judith Shatin.

JAMES MOORE is a versatile guitarist with many musical personalities. Performing on a wide variety of acoustic and electric guitars, banjos, and home-made instruments, James combines the sensitivity and lyricism from his classical training with a healthy dose of improvisation, theatrics, and experimentation. Whether as a soloist, in a rock band, or in a classical ensemble, he aims for all of his music to be unique and personal.

James’s performances have brought him to concert halls and experimental music venues across the country, including shows with Bang on a Can, Other Minds, Princeton University, The Electronic Music Foundation, Anti-Social Music, the Merkin Hall Ear Department Series, and The Kitchen. In addition to collaborating with gifted musicians and composers from his own generation, James has worked with many of today’s leading artists, including David Lang, Steve Reich, Ingram Marshall, and Meredith Monk.

Tonight, James will perform works for banjo and electronics composed by himself, Lainie Fefferman, Matthew Marks, Paula Matthusen, and Matthew Welch.

We will also remember JUAN PEDRO BLANCO RODRIGUEZ, a pioneer of electroacoustic music in America, as well as founder and director of the Cuban National Electroaocustic Music Laboratory, who passed away at the age of 92 on November 5 in Havana. We will play his piece 5 Epitafios.

Vanguard New Contemporary Art Fair FAGE Total Greek Yogurt Exhibit 12/4-7/08

Presented by FAGE Total Greek Yogurt

We have seen art take many different turns recently with the sudden popularity of decorative cakes and food decorating competitions which have grown a mass following. FAGE is stepping into the act this year with their involvement with the “GenArt Vanguard New Contemporary Art Fair” in Miami, December 4-7, 2008. At the fair three one-of-a-kind FAGE-inspired contemporary art works will be unveiled. The artworks, inspired by the brand’s unique production, creamy taste and ridiculously thick texture, will be created by contemporary artists who are also participants at the Vanguard Art Fair: James Marshall (Dalek), Gary Baseman, and AJ Fosik. These artists will channel their inspiration from FAGE Total Greek yogurt to create master pieces good enough to eat.

As part of this collaboration, the artists will also take part in “Fage Studio — Discover. Taste. Create.” a series of art sessions with children from a local non-profit organization, Arts For Learning. In support of the organization, Dalek and Baseman’s art work will be auctioned off online, where all proceeds will be donated to enrich lives and further education of the arts.

Curator’s Voice Art Projects Opening in Wynwood 11/8/08

Curator’s Voice Art Projects
Led by Milagros Bello
cordially invites you
To the Opening Reception of its new space
In Wynwood Art District
Saturday, November 8, 2008 at 7 pm

Rosario Bond, Bunny Girl, Oil over Canvas, 2008, 90 x 90 in

CURATOR’S VOICE ART PROJECTS, led by curator Milagros Bello, has selected the works of Rosario Bond based on their quality and visual strength. CURATOR’S VOICE ART PROJECTS has organized the show LIPSTICK to be presented as part of the main venues within the Miami art scene. LIPSTICK will open on November 8, 2008, and will run during Art Basel week, closing on February 14, 2009.
Rosario Bond proposes neo-expressionistic paintings made out of thick layers of impasto, where figures, objects, and nature intertwine in voracious and parodic relationships. Her most recent series depicts parodies of icons, such as rock stars, models, and other portraits represented through gestural brushstrokes and a bright and intense palette. Her figurative approach is done through a humoristic stanza. Her paintings are collections of personal mythologies combined with critical imagery, posed over disrupted settings and dislocated compositions inhabited by unusual and eerie objects. Her works are a monumental palimpsest of delirious and contrasting shapes that establish a radical dialogue with the Contemporary German neo-expressionists.
About Curator’s Voice Art Projects
CURATOR’S VOICE ART PROJECTS is led by curator Milagros Bello, and its mission is to foster the contemporary arts and the new, emergent voices in the international and national art scenes. CURATOR’S VOICE ART PROJECTS works in conjunction with art institutions, museums, and galleries in the United States and abroad. CURATOR’S VOICE ART PROJECTSinvites guest curators to participate in its art venues.
CURATOR MILAGROS BELLO, PH.D., was the former curator of Hardcore Art Contemporary Space (HACS) in Miami since its inception, until December 2007. At HACS she curated important shows such as OBJECTHOOD (Dec. 2007), HAPPILY EVER AFTER (Dec. 2006), and HARDCORE MENU SAMPLES AND DISHES (Dec. 2005). Galerie Helene Lamarque Opening in Wynwood 11/8/08

Galerie Helene Lamarque Cordially invites you to the Pre-Opening Reception of its new Gallery In Wynwood Art District
Saturday, November 8, 2008 at 7 pm
Thierry Farcy, The United States of France, 2008 Photograph

Beyond the Body: An Inaugural Exhibition
Hélène Lamarque is pleased to announce Beyond the Body, the inaugural exhibition of her new space in Miami’s Wynwood Art District. The group show, marking the opening of the gallery’s first location outside of France, will introduce some of the artists from the gallery’s program to its new neighborhood.
In their own, very distinct ways, the works of 12 artists speak to the representation of the human body and its connection to that which exists beyond the physical realm of passive flesh and its aesthetic appearance. The soma-body is the source of our capacity to feel and to think: It is the nature of our bodily perceptions that fashion our knowledge and construction of the world. The body is the basic medium of experience and existence. It is both the object and the subject of works that question the role it plays in realm of ethics, cognition, politics and aesthetics. The works question the conception of corporeality itself.
Conceived specifically for the new Miami gallery by French artist Thierry Farcy (b.1965), a series of photographs, The United States of France, explores the idea of the United States as a now necessary melting-pot of ideology. A video by the artist in the gallery’s adjacent sculpture garden will accompany the series.
The paintings of Indian artist Bose Krishnamachari’s (b.1963) Stretched Bodies series, which embody the frenetic energy and life of Indian megacities, will be presented in Miami for the first time since the gallery’s participation in last year’s Art Miami fair, also in Wynwood. Krishnamachari is considered the rising star of India. The photographs of Akbar Padamsee (b.1928), recognized as one of the most important Indian artists, reveal the body as a construction, forming compositions of contours, light and shadow. Also representing the gallery’s contemporary Indian program will be works by Manish Pushkale (b.1973), Anish Kapoor (b.1954) and Paris-based artists Anju Chaudhuri (b.1944) and Debesh Goswami (b.1965).
A Body Container, fashioned from the knitting of old magazine pages, by Chinese artist Movana Chen (b.1975) “examines the relationship between clothing and the news/media industry and our consumption of disposable commodities,” while the torn-paper works of Afghani artist Barmak Akram (b.1966), also made of magazine pages, treat the revelation of the female form in natural images. Portuguese artist José de Guimarães (b.1940) defines the contours of the human form in his neon works. And French artist Francois-Xavier Fagniez (b.1936) will present his nature-inspired abstract pictures. The painter, acting almost as a shaman, explores the earth’s fundamental elements through his body’s perception. Also on the border of the ritualistic, one of Damien Hirst’s (b.1965) spin paintings completes the show.
Hélène Lamarque opened her first gallery, in 1994, at the age of 24. She also directs a gallery in Paris’s 7th arrondissement, on the Left Bank. Presenting modern and contemporary art, the gallery has been specializing in Indian contemporary art for the past four years.

The opening reception is free and open to the public
