Piano prodigy Joey Alexander is the next featured artist scheduled to perform at ‘JazzAid Live at the Banyan Bowl’ at Pinecrest Gardens. At just 17 years old, the young musician has countless accolades under his belt, including a solo performance at the 58th Grammy Awards and a White House performance for the Obamas alongside Wayne Shorter and Esperanza Spalding, as well as an NPR Tiny Desk Concert and a Carnegie Hall debut.

Joining Alexander will be Ashley Pezzotti, a 24 year old graduate of the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, whose jazz career is taking off. Pezzotti was the winner of the JazzMemes-hosted #WhatTheEllaChallenge, singing along to Alexander’s song, Someone to Watch Over Me. Pezzotti released her first studio album, We’ve Only Just Begun, in 2019.

Alexander’s upcoming virtual concert will broadcast live from the Banyan Bowl at Pinecrest Gardens at 8 p.m. EST on Saturday, March 13. The cost is $15 for an individual performance, with a generous portion of ticket sales being donated to World Central Kitchen. Tickets can be purchased online at www.pinecrestgardens.org/jazzaid.

This Moment, Here is a commentary on the “time of Corona,” told through the language of dance. The confinement, isolation, rage, longing, confrontation, disbelief, optimism and camaraderie that make up the world’s shared experiences during these turbulent months are the inspiration for this one-act ballet. With choreography by DNM Co-Founders and Artistic Directors Hannah Baumgarten and Diego Salterini, the piece was developed building on personal stories of company members and others. “This Moment, Here” features original music by Federico Bonacossa, costumes by Haydee and Maria Morales and set and lighting design by Bruce F. Brown, all long-time DNM collaborators.

In honor of Haitian Independence Day, the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) is proud to host Haitian-American multidisciplinary artist Inez Barlatier, musician and surrealist visual artist Jan Sebon, and author Fabienne Josaphat for an intimate program of music and poetry on Jan. 1. This virtual performance coincides with the museum’s current exhibition “Life & Spirituality in Haitian Art: Selection from the Betty and Isaac Rudman Trust Collection,” on view through March 14, 2021.

Initiated by the voodoo ceremony of Bois Caïman on the night of August 14, 1791, The Haitian Revolution represents one of the key turning points in the history of the western world and human rights. Led by enslaved Africans in the French colony of Saint Domingue, the revolution resulted in the abolition of slavery in the colony, the first to do so in the western world, and the birth of Haiti on January 1 of 1804. Today, Haitian in Haiti and the diaspora celebrate their Independence in honor of a line of ancestors that fought for their freedom. At the center of the celebration is Soup Joumou, a traditional soup that becomes a symbol of their freedom. MOCA North Miami is pleased to celebrate our Haitian community.

The acts include:

Inez Barlatier is a Haitian-American multidisciplinary artist. At the age of 12 years old, she joined her father’s band, Jan Sebon & Kazak International. Inez later led her own band, Kazoots, for 6 years. She has received a Knight Arts Champion, a L.E.A.P. and an Artist Relief grant supporting her ongoing projects. Inez developed a children’s show entitled “Ayiti: Stories & Songs from Haiti” which was selected as a Spotlight presentation at the 2020 International Performance Art for Youth Conference.

Jan Sebon is a musician and visual artist from Haiti. He is a staple in Miami as pioneering Haitian Jazz music in Miami with his band Koleksyon Kazak. Sebon has hosted political radio shows in Haiti resulting in him being exiled and moving to Miami at the age of 22. He later became an activist and community organizer, fighting for Haitian immigrant rights and hosting another radio show on WDNA in Miami. He has been performing in Miami for over 30 years and has toured internationally while being a former board member at the Miami Light Project. Sebon is also a masterful African and Haitian drummer and surrealist visual artist.

Fabienne Josaphat is the author of Dancing in the Baron’s Shadow, a debut novel released with Unnamed Press and translated into French by Calmann-Levy. Her essay, Summer is an Empty House, recently made the Notable Essays mentions in Best American Essays 2016. Her fiction, non-fiction and poetry have been featured in the African American Review, The Master’s Review, Grist Journal, Damselfly, Hinchas de Poesia, Off the Coast Journal and The Caribbean Writer, as well as in Eight Miami Poets, a Jai-Alai Books poetry anthology. She was recently a national juror for the 2019 Scholastic Awards. She lives in South Florida.

Rocking a red ribbon not only completes any outfit; it shows everyone – especially people living with HIV and their families – your support. On Tuesday, December 1 at 8:30 a.m. The World AIDS Museum and Educational Center (WAM) will present the official kick-off to World AIDS Day, founded in 1988 and themed this year as Rock the Ribbon. Hosted by The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale, the event will feature special guests Chuck Panozzo, Styx rock band member, and Laura Vivas, recording artist and former contestant on The Voice.

World AIDS Museum will gather elected officials, fellow HIV-related agencies and other stakeholders. Attendees will embrace this community gathering with special performances by Laura Vivas and the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus under the direction of Gary Keating. DJ Aulden Brown will add his flair to rock the crowd.

Special guest Styx rock band member Chuck Panozzo will be one of the voices heard as to why this day is so important. Charles Salvatore “Chuck” Panozzo is an American musician best known as the bass player for the rock band Styx. A longtime member of Styx, he founded the group with his fraternal twin brother, drummer John Panozzo, who died in July 1996, and singer/keyboardist Dennis De Young. He toured part-time from 1999 to 2003, and currently tours with Styx on a regular basis.

Chuck Panozzo is openly gay and has been out since 2001. That year, he also announced that he is living with HIV, and has been involved in campaigning for AIDS awareness and gay rights. In 2006, he spoke with Frontiers for the first time about his decision to come out. The following year, he released his autobiography “The Grand Illusion: Love, Lies, and My Life with Styx.”

Laura Vivas will offer a live performance that will coincide with the rock theme. Her blind audition on NBC’s hit show The Voice, Season 3, resulted in a spot on Christina Aguilera’s team. A native of Puerto Rico, Vivas’ career began at age 18 singing back-up for local artists. Since 2007, she has been the lead singer and the lone female in a six-piece South Florida cover band called Re-Mix. She has opened for artists such as Roberta Flack, Chaka Khan, Bruce Hornsby and more.

The event, sponsored by The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale, Seasons 52, Michael Murphy Photography and GPR | Goodman Public Relations, will be open to the public and take place outdoors under the covered valet parking entrance. Stage Mother, a new comedy-drama starring Oscar-nominated Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook, Animal Kingdom), Adrian Grenier (Entourage, The Devil Wears Prada) and Emmy-Nominated Lucy Liu (Charlie’s Angels, Elementary, Ally McBeal), will kick-off the 22nd edition of the OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival on Thursday, August 20, at 7 p.m. This special OUTshine Opening Night Drive-OUT preview at Dezerland Drive-In in North Miami (the film will be released to the public on August 21) will launch a celebration of diversity and equality with 80 thought-provoking films from 20 countries, (many never-seen-before and not available on any streaming platform) accessible via 44 screenings available from August 20 – 30, 2020. A livestreamed Q& A session will follow the film.

Stage Mother tells the story of Maybelline (Jacki Weaver), a conservative Texas church-choir director who inherits her recently deceased son’s drag club. She surprises her closed-minded husband and everyone else she knows by moving alone to San Francisco to save the club from bankruptcy. In this raucous, racy new environment, she begins to open-up and finds new meaning for her life, even becoming a mother-figure to the club’s flamboyant performers. In addition to Adrian Grenier and Lucy Liu, the film also stars, Mya Taylor (Tangerine) and the legendary Jackie Beat.

Stage Mother was a winner of the Best of the Fest Audience Vote at the Palm Springs International Film Festival and winner of the Next Wave Award from the Provincetown International Film Festival.

The 22nd edition of the OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival, a bi-annual film festival whose mission is to unite the community through social events and LGBTQ+ media that inspire, entertain, and educate, is going virtual! For the first time in the organization’s history, 80 new contemplative, comedic and creative films from 20 countries, (many never-seen-before and not available on any streaming platform) with 44 screenings will be made available to viewers throughout the state of Florida from August 20 – 30, 2020. The festival will also host livestreamed special events with cocktail happy hours, talent and Q & A sessions as a way to virtually tie the community together.

The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale, recognized as Broward County’s premier shopping destination, has announced Fender artist and Latin Grammy Award winner Manny Diquez as its next featured performer on Happy Hour with The Galleria, a virtual music series, scheduled for Thursday, June 18, at 5 p.m., on Facebook Live. He will perform a variety of alternative, classic rock and popular covers from Oasis, Cat Stevens, Stevie Wonder, The Spin Doctors, The Beatles, REM, Bob Marley, Gnarls Barkley and Ben E. King.

Born in Trinidad & Tobago, raised in Venezuela and living in the United States since 2004, Manny Diquez is a versatile musical artist who has recorded more than 30 albums, many in both Spanish and English. He has won two Latin Grammy Awards as a musician and arranger in 2011 and was a 2012 Latin Grammy artist nominee for “Best Rock Song.” Diquez served as music director for networks including Univision and Telemundo and is a voting member of the Grammy Academy Awards and Latin Grammy Academy Awards. When he’s not in the studio. Diquez is a touring musician.

Launched in April on Facebook Live, Happy Hour with The Galleria has successfully entertained thousands in the local community during the COVID-19 quarantine. Diquez will join previous Happy Hour with The Galleria virtual music performers Carly Jo Jackson, Alexander Star, The Tim Charron Band and Tori Rossi Music and WILL PLUS. The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale, recognized as Broward County’s premier shopping destination, has announced emerging songstress Carly Jo Jackson as its next featured performer on Happy Hour with The Galleria, a virtual music series, scheduled for Thursday, June 4, at 5 p.m. on Facebook Live.

With a voice filled with grit and soul, Carly Jo Jackson brings the heat of the Florida sunshine to all she does. She has a vocal tone that is as infectious as her charismatic stage presence. She caught the attention of some big names in the music and entertainment business, opening shows for Michael McDonald (who also provided vocals on her recent EP), Kenny Loggins and Dennis Quaid and serving as a musical inspiration to Jeff Bridges who recently featured her on his Sleep Club website. Other notable performances include her 2014 appearance on America’s Got Talent, where she appeared in two televised episodes and advanced to Judgement Week; performing as an Emerging Artist at 2018’s Summerfest; singing backup vocals to Kenny Loggins at 2019’s Hawaii Songwriters Festival; performing at the renowned 30A Songwriters Festival along with Jason Isbell, Brandi Carlile, Shawn Mullins, Livingston Taylor and more; opening a San Francisco 49ers game; and winning the 2015 Belk Southern Musician Showcase. In late 2019, she released her EP Au Naturel, produced by Chris Pelonis and Lost Coast Records and distributed by Jimmy Buffet’s Cherry Bomb Records.

Launched in April on Facebook Live, Happy Hour with The Galleria has successfully entertained thousands in the local community during the COVID-19 quarantine. Jackson will join previous Happy Hour with The Galleria virtual music performers Alexander Star, The Tim Charron Band and Tori Rossi Music and WILL PLUS. . . . and we’ve got some very special words indeed!

The Blazing World, by Siri Hustvedt. Breaking down the book through fiction reading, Olympia actors will bring to life the characters of Hustvedt’s latest novel, the provocative story of artist Harriet “Harry” Burden who, after years of watching her work ignored or dismissed by critics, conducts an experiment she calls Maskings. She presents her own art behind three male masks, concealing her female identity.

Wednesday, June 17th will be our first evening focused solely on fiction, breaking down a single book, and The Blazing World, with its fractured structure and diverging perspectives, really lends itself to this approach. Raquel Roque from Books & Books in Coral Gables will be on hand with copies of the novel for sale.

Doors open at 6:00 pm and the reading starts at 6:30 pm. Cocktails available at the bar. Guided tour of the historic Olympia Theater during intermission.

This is a FREE event, open to the public.

In The Lobby Lounge . . .”WORDS! is our second foray into the wonderful world of Wednesdays in Downtown Miami,” says Olympia Theater Executive Director Robert Geitner, “bringing theatre and prose back to the Olympia on a monthly basis.” Future words-oriented evenings will include directed play readings, improv, skits & spontaneous theater, short stories, readings of excerpts from longer works of fiction, and personal monologues “in their own words.” By October 2015, the event will be scheduled the first Wednesday of every month.

The 2nd Annual Ceviche Festival was a celebratory event for the whole family which all proceeds when to the construction for the completion of La Merced Museo Peru Church, the first church and Peruvian museum in Miami.

The event had distinguished personalities such as Raquel Regalado, Tomas Garcia Fuste from Mira TV, Univision covered the event, and other media outlets. Guests had a wonderful Sunday that was marked by solidarity, great food, cooking sessions and spectacular shows of traditional Peruvian dancers, live music, etc.

Supporters of the event included El Mero Loco II, Mochila del Chef, Cevicheria Rosita, Divino Ceviche’s Chef Christian Encalada Alvan, Rizio’s Peruvian Cuisine Chef Mauricio Valverde & Cesar Valverde, El Huarike Peruano Chef Ysabel Bartra, Mari Morla, Cholos Ceviche Grill’s Chef Fabricio Pareja, La Huaca Peruvian Cuisine Ines & Aida Morales, El Pollo Inka Miami’s Chef Daniel D. Cespedes Titinger, El Punto Peruano Peruvian Food Truck Chef Pedro Enrique Rodriguez, Asociacion Cultural Peru Danza and many more.

The Corpus Christi Church and Iglesia de la Merced will be a church museum with artifacts, relics, and historical accounts of Peru. The original church is currently in Lima and soon there will be one on Miami displaying the richness of the Peruvian culture.

38th Annual Art Deco Weekend on Ocean Drive Miami Beach Friday, January 16 – Sunday, January 18, 2105.  This year we celebrate the 38th Annual Art Deco Weekend Celebrates Miami Beach 100 Year Anniversary.  Every year during Art Deco Weekend, Miami Design Preservation League closes Ocean Drive to traffic. Over 140 vendors line Lummus Park and Ocean Drive displaying vintage and handmade paintings, photography, jewelry, sculptures, posters and more. Ocean Drive fills with street entertainment, classic cars and people. However, the main attraction is the Art Deco buildings sitting on the most famous street in South Florida!

This year, Life Is Art  created their very own “Locals Only Art Zone” within the Art Deco Weekend Festival called the Life Is Art Block! All of our artists will be gathered into one block in the middle of Ocean Drive, the Art Block featuring only local artists. Exhibiting Artists include: David Gary Lloyd, JanRafael, Mark Diamond, J.A.S. Cirque du Soleil and Redwood Media Group announce its partnership with contemporary art show, SPECTRUM Miami, which takes place in the heart of Miami’s Wynwood Design District during Art Week Miami and alongside Art Basel Miami Beach from December 3 – 7.
