Alex has just fallen out of love. He had his hopes up with a guy who, after a few weeks, has given him a textbook ghosting. And that doesn’t sit well with him. He picks up the phone and sets out to ask for explanations with a voice message that will have the most unexpected consequences… because he ends up sending it by mistake to Bruno, whom he doesn’t know at all. This innocent first mistake is the first in a chain of events that will change Àlex and Bruno’s lives forever.

Sisters Etta and Claribel Cone are gifted with a day of life decades after their deaths. They spend it in a gallery where their collection of art, in a wing named after them, is exhibited. Gertrude Stein and her partner Alice B. Toklas crash the party. A Matisse painting comes to life and guides the four from the present to the past and back again. As they relive their lives, timid Etta examines her relationships with the others and makes new discoveries about her own vibrant inner life. This delightful and exuberant play will take you on a journey that is highly relevant to women’s lives today.

Jojo, a great kid who loves to read… That is until some kids in the lunchroom start calling her names like “bookworm.” To avoid the bullying, Jojo goes to Mendel’s Magical Book Shop, hoping that she can sell his books and use the money to buy video games, so she’ll fit in with the other kids. Once in the Magic Book Shop though, things take an unexpected turn as the stories in her books magically start to jump to life all around her! Now, all of the pages to Jojo’s books are blank and the characters from her books are running wild in real life!

It’s up to Jojo to retell the stories to get her old friends to go back on the page. While Jojo works to get his favorite characters from her books to go back on to the pages they belong in, she remembers why she loves to read some much in the first place; It’s really FUN! Along the way Jojo starts to realize that all of his books have characters in them who are different, and that being different is what makes them special.

This show artfully weaves its featured books into its thru-line to create a show that both encourages reading and celebrates diversity.

The next addition to our “Dans Le Avant Garde” series. In the Louisiana bayou, big brother Ogun Size is hardworking and steady. Younger brother Oshoosi is just out of prison and aimless. Elega, Oshoosi’s old prison-mate, is a mysterious complication. A simple circle defines a world that beings in ritual and evolves into a touch and tender drama of what it means to brother and be brothered. Flights of poetry, music, dance, and West African mythology combine in a contemporary tale that explores the tenuousness of freedom and the need to belong somewhere, to something, to someone.
Following the matinee performance on June 24, we will have a talkback entitled “Bein’ a Brutha”, focusing on masculinity and brotherhood in the Black Male community. In addition, we will delve into the traditional emotional tendencies in male culture, and explore concepts of love, weakness, the black male body, and effeminacy. Featuring “Universal Man” Mo Beasley, Researcher/Educator, Brian Knowles, and Co-Founder of Project T.H.U.G, David L. Jackson, the essence of this talkback will unpack how non-sexual relationships between men are tainted and looked down upon, as well as, the effects of those responses, be it emotional instability or generational traumas.
This production contains strong language.

The Maids (Les Bonnes) is a play by the French playwright Jean Genet, premiered in Paris in 1947.1 Suffering at its premiere the rejection of much of the public and critics, over the years it has been considered one of the key dramatic texts of the 20th century theatre. The Maids is written at the end of the interwar period, after World War II. The work describes the underworld of the maids, of the subproletariat to which redemption would be forbidden, in a certain way an underworld that would have parallels with that of Genet himself. Two maids love and hate their mistress at the same time. They have denounced the lover of this one of hers in anonymous letters. Knowing that they are going to release him due to lack of evidence and that his betrayal will be discovered, they try to assassinate his wife, they fail and they want to kill each other. Finally, one of them commits suicide…

More info:

Fueled by her ambition to be recognized as a multi-faceted entertainer and producer who stands apart from current music industry leaders, Sunni Stephens created Clubesque, a contemporary cabaret featuring Vegas style theatrics and choreography reminiscent of the old Broadway style musicals set in the landscape of today’s pop culture. Her approach as a producer is simple–take the great music of the past and re-invent it. She studies the greats and applies their entertainment styles to today’s generation of music and dance.

With its roots in Atlanta, GA; Clubesque made its debut in Miami Beach, Florida at the Fillmore Theater in 2018. One of the most sought out Miami events, this sold out live music show cemented their presence in Miami. Featuring a new Burlesque Queen each month, it currently has a monthly residency at – Kuba Cubana and Faena Hotel with expansion plans for the production to serve the Marriott Brand Hotels in Fort Lauderdale.

Featuring lush costumes, infectious music, and dazzling choreography let yourself be tantalized by the hottest music in the world and be transported to the Gatsby age Jazz era with the big band and showgirls.

Sunni says, “I started ‘Cocktails & Cabaret’ because I became bored with the one style of entertainment and the lack of diversity among current dinner shows in the Miami market. They are great performances, but very little shows in the structure of a real production. I am the only African-American female that has a full production in the Miami market, one of the few fully produced shows that has a live band and live music from start to finish, that celebrates the diversity of our culture that is intertwined in the storyline.”

Brazilian Voices is a nonprofit women’s vocal ensemble that performs at cultural community and philanthropic events. Since then, these two musical directors have brought together a cast of devoted women, who volunteer their voices and time promoting and preserving the rich multicultural Brazilian heritage fostering multicultural exchange, music appreciation, and education.

Last October, FAB announced its “Be The Spark,” fundraising campaign. The campaign aims to raise $3 million over the next five years that will significantly increase FAB’s grantmaking pool including expanding grants for arts education, encourage collaboration and new works and establish an endowment at the Community Foundation of Broward.

Through this campaign, FAB will be able to expand its support to groups beginning with the grant applications to be announced for the upcoming 2024 program year.

Since its inception in 2003, FAB has endowed grants of over $4 million to 65 small, mid-sized, and large professional performing and visual arts organizations. Despite being tormented by his impending hearing loss, Ludwig van Beethoven infused his Second Symphony with vigor. “This Symphony is smiling throughout,” Berlioz claimed of Beethoven’s most jovial symphony. The boisterous Dances of Galánta celebrates the Hungarian folk and gypsy musical traditions of Zoltán Kodály’s childhood.

The most exciting and innovative Black voices in Broward County take center stage when the Broward Center for the Performing Arts presents the second annual Rhythm by the River: A Festival Celebrating Black Voices at Esplanade Park in downtown Fort Lauderdale.

The free event features live music, dance, drama and spoken word poetry performances as well as interactive events for the entire family.

On the main stage, The Smoogies kick off the afternoon’s music lineup with a blend of jazz, funk and R&B sounds and influences that will make people feel good while listening. Miami-born Gia Wyre, also known as “Songbird,” uplifts the audience with her voice and soul-stirring gospel, R&B and soul repertoire. Singer, saxophonist and pianist Timothy Dukes brings the powerful sounds of gospel to inspire the audience. The party continues with the energy-packed performance from singer, songwriter and producer Sizwe Collins, a staple in the Caribbean community across South Florida, who brings a contagious mix of sounds from steelpan, African drums. R&B and hip-hop artist/producer Jean Carlos Casely closes the festival’s performances on a high note.

Free community workshops offered at the Broward Center’s Mary N. Porter Riverview Ballroom include spoken word with Art Prevails Project founder Darius V. Daughtry, drumming with Troupe Fall West African Drum and Dance and hip-hop/dance with Developing Dream Foundation’s executive director Pablo Malco.

The afternoon also features arts and crafts as well as food trucks from J&J Soul Food, Wontons on Wheels, The Caribe Vegan and cupcakes from Sweet Sensations by Charlene.

Rhythm by the River is proudly supported by radio media sponsor Cox Media Group and will be hosted live by Supa Cindy from The Pac Jam Morning Show on 99 JAMZ and Rodney Baltimore, mornings on Hot 105.

Rhythm by the River is part of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts’ Arts for Action: Black Voices initiative, co-presented by Baptist Health and JM Family Enterprises, Inc., which focuses on how the arts and artists can be a force for change in addressing critical issues of social justice and racial inequality.

South Florida Symphony Orchestra will present a passionate evening of masterworks from Brahms, Sibelius and Berlioz on Wednesday, February 15, at 7:30 p.m., at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale. Led by Music Director Sebrina María Alfonso, SFSO’s 25th anniversary season brings Brahms’ final symphonic work, Double Concerto for Violin and Cello in A minor, Op. 102, featuring duo Geneva Lewis on violin and Gabriel Martins on cello, along with Finnish composer Sibelius’ Symphony No. 5 in E-flat major, Op. 82 and the spirited overture to Berlioz’s Béatrice et Bénédict, to new and returning classical music enthusiasts.

Johannes Brahms’ Double Concerto for Violin and Cello in A minor, Op. 102, is the remarkable realization of a composer’s dream — to create a new “super” instrument that transcends customary limits. This composition united the violin and cello for the first time. The piece was composed as a conciliatory effort to his closest musical friend and collaborator Joseph Joachim, whom he had a falling out with over Joachim’s divorce. The first private performance of this piece was on September 21, 1887 at the Baden-Baden casino. The public premiere followed on October 18, and the work was performed several more times during that concert season.

Jean Sibelius was commissioned to write Symphony No. 5 by the Finnish government in honor of his 50th birthday on December 8, 1915, which had been declared a national holiday. The original version of the work was premiered by the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Sibelius that day. The second version, only part of which survives, was first performed by the Orchestra of Turun Soitannollinen Seura in Turku exactly one year later. The final version, which is the one most commonly performed today, was premiered again by the Helsinki Philharmonic, conducted by Sibelius, on November 24, 1919. The first version of the new symphony kept much of his familiar orchestral style (consonant sonorities, woodwind lines in parallel thirds, rich melodic development, etc.) but also shows some similarities with the more modernist Fourth Symphony, featuring a few bitonal passages. The 1919 version seems more straightforward, monumental and classical, and also cleared away some digressions and ornaments. Sibelius commented on his revision: “I wished to give my symphony another – more human – form. More down-to-earth, more vivid.”

Though his unique and innovative music was championed in Germany, France never fully recognized Hector Berlioz in his own lifetime. Béatrice et Bénédict, his final completed work, would be premiered not in Paris, but in Baden. Composed between 1860 and 1862, this comic opera dates from a difficult period in the composer’s life, but despite his disappointments and increasing ill-health, the work is one of his lightest, most delightful creations. The opera’s plot is a simplified version of “Much Ado about Nothing” by Shakespeare, one of Berlioz’ chief sources of inspiration. Beatrice and Benedict cannot stand each other, so on a lark their friends and families decide to get them together through a series of deceptions (the basic outline of the romantic comedy has changed little in 400 years).

Upcoming SFSO 25th anniversary season concerts include an all Dvořák program on March 22, and season closer Rachmaninoff and Bruckner on April 26.

Tickets for the Masterworks III program start at $15 for The Parker and may be purchased by visiting southfloridasymphony.org/masterworks-iii-2022-2023 or by calling (954) 522-8445.

South Florida Symphony Orchestra’s (SFSO) 25th anniversary season continues to shine with Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 9, the world premiere of Ocklawaha by composer-in-residence John Gottsch, and a selection of great opera arias from Puccini, Verdi, and Lara. Led by Music Director Sebrina María Alfonso with guest soloists Catalina Cuervo, soprano, and Adam Diegel, tenor, the Masterworks program is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on January 24 at New World Center in Miami Beach.

Originally intended to be to a grandiose piece that would glorify Stalin’s regime and Russian victory over the Nazis in 1945, Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 9 rendered a more complex, thoughtful and sometimes carefree composition. The composer was known for his resistance to the Soviet rule and his subversion tactics often promising to compose the piece the regime wanted while actually giving it something else.

SFSO’s composer-in-residence John Gottsch will present the world premiere of Ocklawaha. The Ocklawaha is a river originating in the lakes of central Florida and flowing north through some of the most mysterious, wild, and breathtakingly beautiful parts of the state. As a young boy, the composer traveled the Ocklawaha with his father, learning the history of the river and surrounding lakes, that brought to life on passing shores, the escaped slaves, Seminole warriors, and a Civil War battle. The musical narrative brings to life the storied struggles of Florida’s Native American ancestors through thoughtfully arranged orchestral movements.

John D. Gottsch was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and moved to Florida with his family, shortly thereafter. He spent his youth in the lake country of the Sunshine State traveling extensively and observing natural habitats. These explorations of Florida gave him an enduring love for its beauty and wildlife. He has been a lifelong composer and a number of his compositions reflect his deep appreciation of the outdoors. Last year, SFSO premiered the live performance of Gottsch’s original composition Princess Yurievskaya, and in 2020, SFSO premiered Sunset, both of which were featured on Gottsch’s 2020 debut album released by Naxos Records, the world’s leading classical music label. SFSO also performed Gottsch’s Bagatelles for Violin & Piano as part of its Summer With the Symphony Series in June 2021. His piano suite, Homosassa, premiered in Palm Beach in 2020. His piano quintet, Maryland Hunt, premiered at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Washington, DC in 2018 and has been performed in Philadelphia, Vienna, Rotterdam and Baltimore. Gottsch, a full-time doctor, now splits his time between Baltimore and Key West.

In addition, the program includes with a selection of great opera arias performed by Catalina Cuervo and Adam Diegel – Puccini’s “O Mio Babbino Caro,” “Un Bel Dì, Vedremo,” and “O Soave Fanciulla,” Agustín Lara’s “Granada,” Verdi’s “La Donna è Mobile” and “Brindisi” (The Drinking Song from La Traviata).

Tickets for the Masterworks II program start at $25 for New World Center. Tickets may be purchased by visiting southfloridasymphony.org/2022-23-season or by calling (954) 522-8445.

Cost: Tickets start at just $25 for the concert at Tennessee Williams Theatre

South Florida Symphony Orchestra’s (SFSO) 25th anniversary season continues to shine with Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 9, the world premiere of Ocklawaha by composer-in-residence John Gottsch, and a selection of great opera arias from Puccini, Verdi, and Lara. Led by Music Director Sebrina María Alfonso with guest soloists Catalina Cuervo, soprano, and Adam Diegel, tenor, the Masterworks program is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on January 28, opening the season at Tennessee Williams Theatre at The College of the Florida Keys in Key West.

Upcoming SFSO concerts include Brahms, Sibelius and Berlioz on February 18 and an all Dvořák program on March 25.

Anna in the Tropics 1/12/23

Anna in the Tropics
Thursday, 01/12/2023-02/05/2023, 08:00 pm-
The Colony Theatre
1040 Lincoln Road,
Miami Beach, Florida, 33139
Website
Cost: $40 – $70

Miami New Drama is preparing to roll out the red carpet on the 20th Anniversary production of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Anna in the Tropics. Written by Miami playwright Nilo Cruz, it was commissioned by the New Theatre in Coral Gables back in 2002. Since then, it has made the rounds including London, L.A., and Broadway, and has featured award-winning actors such as Jimmy Smits, Tony Plana, and Lolita Flores, to name a few. After 20 years, Miami will not only get to see it at The Colony Theatre, but this time, they’ll get to experience it with Nilo Cruz as its director for a three-week run between January 12 through February 5, 2023.

The audience will be transported back to 1929 to a Cuban American cigar factory where Cuban migrants labored away hand rolling each cigar, as a hired “lector”, who was traditionally well-dressed and eloquent, would read to them as a form of entertainment. When a new lector enters the scene and begins to read aloud Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, he unwittingly becomes a catalyst in the lives of his avid listeners and suddenly the lives of the workers begin to parallel the novel. Old traditions and new ways collide while longing, love, and betrayal spark a volatile flame that signals the end of an era.

Anna in the Tropics runs from January 12, 2023, through February 5 at the Colony Theatre (1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, FL 33139) with an opening night scheduled for October 29th. Performances are scheduled Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 3 pm. Tickets ($40 – $70) are on sale at miaminewdrama.org or by calling Miami New Drama’s Box Office at (305) 674 -1040 or email at boxoffice@miaminewdrama.org.

Tributes Starring Joe Posa as Joan Rivers and Featuring Seth Sikes 1/14/23

TRIBUTES Starring Joe Posa as Joan Rivers and Featuring Seth Sikes
Saturday, 01/14/2023-, 08:00 pm-
Sunshine Cathedral Center for the Performing Arts
1480 SW 9th Avenue,
Fort Lauderdale, Florida, 33315
Website
Cost: $35; $65 VIP ticket includes premium seating and a meet and greet photo opportunity with both performers

The stars will align when Joe Posa and Seth Sikes unite to perform for one night only in “TRIBUTES,” a loving homage to female leading legends, on Saturday, January 14, at 8 p.m., at the Sunshine Cathedral Center for the Performing Arts (1480 SW 9th Avenue). Tickets for this dynamic duo show are on sale, now.

This new tribute show, produced by the leading men, themselves, will bring two worlds of performance art together: female impersonation and live song. Joe Posa will impersonate Joan Rivers, Barbra Streisand and Liza Minnelli while Seth Sikes will delight audiences with his soulful voice singing of nostalgic tunes made famous by Judy Garland, Bernadette Peters and others.

Joe Posa has made a name for himself in show business, starting his career in musical theater as a performer/dancer featured in the international touring company of West Side Story plus other musicals including Anything Goes, Grease, A Chorus Line and South Pacific. In 1993 (soon to be celebrating his 30th anniversary), he then found his wings as a sought-after female celebrity impersonator. Having performed alongside Ms. Rivers on two separate occasions, Posa was lovingly called by Ms. Rivers, her “favorite Joan Rivers Impersonator.” As a cast member in several productions of “An Evening at La Cage,” he has performed as Barbra Streisand, Liza Minnelli, Gloria Estefan and Michael Jackson. Posa was also Susan Lucci’s Erica Kane character double on ABC’s “All My Children,” as well as Tina Fey’s Liz Lemon character double on NBC’s “30 Rock.” Posa has produced and starred in multiple shows in Provincetown, Puerta Vallarta, Boston, Palm Springs, New York City, London and other cities for nearly 20 years. His productions include, “Guys as Dolls,” “An Evening at the Birdcage,” “Joe Posa Poses,” and “The Bitch is Back!” Also, he has performed at numerous red carpet corporate functions, charity fundraisers and elegant private events.

Seth Sikes is one of New York’s most popular young nightclub performers. Hailed as “the best male singer of his generation” by Theatre Scene, Sikes has been selling out venues since his 2014 debut of “Seth Sikes Sings Judy Garland.” The show recounted how Garland inspired Sikes as a young boy in Paris, Texas, while he belted the legend’s greatest hits backed by a seven-piece band. The show won Broadway World’s Best Tribute Show award and prompted The New York Times to declare, “The performance was a hit with critics and audiences, alike.” The reviewers were equally enthusiastic toward his follow-up show, “Seth Sikes Sings Liza Minnelli.” The New York Post relayed, “It was a heartfelt concert. Sikes has a heap of fans, and his audiences are always tightly packed and brimming with enthusiasm for his booming, jazzy renditions of their favorite songs.” When the Covid pandemic prevented Sikes from performing for live audiences, he created a series of online music video parodies that went viral, viewed by hundreds of thousands. His most recent video, “Ring Them Bells,” was selected to close the globally broadcast Liza Minnelli 75th birthday tribute. Sikes also works in the theatre behind the scenes. He was associate director for “The Band’s Visit” and “The Nance” on Broadway. He directed the original musical “Bunked!” which won Outstanding Musical at the New York International Fringe Festival in 2010, as well as “The 7th Annual Broadway Beauty Pageant.

Tickets for “TRIBUTES” start at $35 with a $65 VIP ticket including premium seating and a meet and greet photo opportunity with both performers. To purchase tickets, visit bit.ly/TributesbyPosaandSikes.

A beloved holiday musical tradition is returning to South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO)! Sebrina María Alfonso will conduct Handel’s glorious holiday favorite, Messiah, the seasonal masterpiece, featuring soloists Neil Nelson, bass baritone; Gerardo Ortega, tenor; Brittany Graham, soprano; Stephanie Newman, mezzo-soprano and the South Florida Symphony Chorus on December 4, at 4 p.m., at Barry University in Miami.

Smithsonian magazine writes, “A musical rite of the holiday season, the Baroque-era oratorio still awes listeners 250 years after the composer’s death.” Handel’s popular work, which draws from the Christian Lent and Easter stories, encompasses a musical narrative brilliance that transcends belief systems.”

To elevate the holiday spirit, the evening opens with glorious sounds of the season, including Schubert’s Ave Maria; Pietro Yon’s Italian Christmas carol, “Gesù Bambino;” Mendelssohn’s “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” and more followed by Part I of Handel’s Messiah. The performance culminates with the iconic “Hallelujah” chorus as sung by the South Florida Symphony Chorus, made-up of seasoned chorale singers and community talent. The Chorus is conducted by Dr. Giselle Elgarresta Rios. Rios and Maestra Alfonso collaborated to create the South Florida Symphony Chorus in 2019, which made its debut at the Beethoven 250th celebration in February of 2020.

The esteemed South Florida Symphony, celebrating its 25th anniversary of artistic excellence, launched its 2022/23 season on November 9 at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale and on November 10 New World Center in Miami Beach. This outstanding season will feature classical masterworks including Shostakovich’s final “War Symphony,” No. 9, Brahms’s doubly demanding Concerto for Violin and Cello and an all-Dvořák program with audience favorite – and performer during the Symphony’s inaugural concert – Zuill Bailey. Additionally, honoring its commitment to presenting new works, SFSO will present its third world premiere by composer-in-residence John Gottsch: the Florida-inspired Ocklawaha. The South Florida Symphony Chorus will expand its repertoire, once again, performing one of the greatest large chorale works of its day, Bruckner’s majestic Te Deum.

Tickets start at $20 for the December 4 performance at Barry University’s Shepard & Ruth K. Broad Performing Arts Center (11300 NE 2nd Ave in Miami Shores) and can be ordered online at https://southfloridasymphony.org/handels-messiah or via phone at (954) 522-8445. Tchaikovsky, Elgar and Barber Masterworks will launch South Florida Symphony Orchestra’s (SFSO) celebratory 25th anniversary 2022/23 season of artistic excellence at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 9, at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale. Led by Music Director Sebrina María Alfonso, SFSO will perform Tchaikovsky’s beloved Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35, with featured soloist Askar Salimdjanov; Elgar’s series of short musical portraits, Enigma, Variations on an Original Theme, Op. 36; and Barber’s orchestral work in one movement, First Essay for Orchestra, Op. 12.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D major, one of the most beloved violin concertos in history, is a romantic masterpiece. Radiating Russian spirit, Tchaikovsky’s only violin concerto will be performed by Askar Salimdjanov.

Salimdjanov is a multiple winner of the Lyric Chamber Music Competition, which led him to his New York debut recital in May 2019 and in May 2020 at the Lyric Chamber Series at the Kosciusko Foundation in New York. In November 2020, he had his Orchestra Miami debut performing Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto. In 2020 Mr. Salimdjanov won the first NSAL Piano and Strings Duo Competition and in 2019, he won Fourth place in the John Oliveira String Competition. Salimdjanov has performed as soloist with South Florida Symphony (during the recent Summer with the Symphony Chamber Music Series), Uzbekistan National Symphony Orchestra, State Conservatory Orchestra of Uzbekistan, Lynn Philharmonia and Orchestra Miami under the batons of Kuvanch Usmanov, Vladimir Neymer, Kamoliddin Urinbaev, Alan Paris, Guillermo Figueroa and Elaine Rinaldi. He performed as a soloist and as a chamber musician in Russia, Ukraine, Italy, Sweden, Singapore, Israel, and the United States.

In 2022, Salimdjanov was selected as one of seven violinists to participate at Geneva International String Academy in Switzerland. Salimdjanov was a concertmaster of Yong Siew Toh Conservatory orchestra and Lynn University orchestra as well as a substitute violinist at Naples Philharmonic Orchestra. He received his Bachelor of Music degree from the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music in Singapore where he studied with distinguished violinist Qian Zhou. Mr. Salimdjanov completed his professional performance certificate at Lynn University with renowned violinist Elmar Oliveira. Some of Salimdjanov’s students are prize winners of international competitions for young musicians.

Completed in the first half of 1938, Samuel Barber’s First Essay for Orchestra, Op. 12, is an orchestral work in one movement. Arturo Toscanini with the NBC Symphony Orchestra first performed it on November 5, 1938 in New York in a radio broadcast concert . The essay is now known as the First Essay for Orchestra after Barber wrote his Second Essay for Orchestra in 1942. He also wrote a Third Essay in 1978.

Edward Elgar’s Enigma, Variations on an Original Theme, Op. 36, is one of his best-known works that catapulted him to fame. Premiering in London in 1899, the work consists of 14 short musical portraits of several of the composer’s friends and family, and is considered to be one of the greatest compositions of the 19th century.

Upcoming SFSO concerts include Handel’s Messiah on December 3 and 4; Shostakovich, a Gottsch Ocklawaha World Premiere and Great Opera Arias on January 24, 25 and 28; Brahms, Sibelius and Berlioz on February 15 and 18, an all Dvořák program on March 22, 23 and 25 and season closer Rachmaninoff and Bruckner on April 26.

The tour and recording of “Alejandra” are tributes to the mother of guitarist, José Almarcha, who hails from La Mancha, Spain. The sudden and unexpected loss of his mother was instrumental in changing the way Mr. Almarcha composes and interprets Flamenco. “Alejandra” is a personal and intimate recording where memories reverberate within the flamenco themes that José Almarcha develops. Behind each note there are glimpses into his interior being, his personal history, his roots, and his identity. The result is an ideogram through musical sounds that evoke important memories, places, experiences, and people who left an imprint on him.

Brévo Theatre (@brevo_theatre) is proud to present “Funnyhouse of a Negro” as its final production of the 2021-2022 season. The off-brodway performance originally created by Adrienne Kennedy in 1964 will take place on October 22 and October 23 at 7 p.m. at the Proscenium Theatre at the Little Haiti Cultural Center located at 212 NE 59th Terrace, Miami, Florida 33137. General admission tickets are $25.00. Tickets can be purchased at Brévo Theatre (https://brevo-theatre.ticketleap.com/funnyhouse-of-a-negro/). “Funnyhouse of a Negro,” directed by Zaylin Yates and part of the theatre’s “Dans le avant-garde” series, is a poetic and symbolic investigation into one woman’s mind before her death. Sarah has created four different personas as a way to grapple with her own self-hatred: Queen Victoria, the Duchess of Hapsburg, Jesus and Patrice Lumumba. With these four characters at her side, Sarah tries to make sense of her conception (from rape), her life without her parents, and the creeping insanity that she feels all around her. The cast for the show includes Jessica Raquel as Negro Sarah; Jamall Lynch as Patrice Lumumba, Naomi Ray-Barnett as Queen Victoria Regina, Chasity Hart as the Duchess of Hapsburg and Omari White as Jesus and Funnyhouse Man. It also stars Onyekachi “Onyi” Anyagaligbo as Sarah’s Landlord/Funnyhouse Woman. The October 23 show will be followed by a symposium entitled “Between Two Worlds,” that deals with colorism and self-identity. This symposium will feature a panel of special guests and focus on mental and emotional healing for biracial men and women. A partnership between Brévo Theatre and South Florida AfroPride, the session will tackle topics on how the community can seek emotional healing. Learning tools to practice self-love and embracing all the things that define our humanity. Mental illness, self-hate, and the need to be socially accepted are issues that currently plague the Black and BIPOC communities. Admission to the symposium will be free and will directly follow the performance.

Three actors sit in an ethereal waiting room. Each performance, the audience chooses which actor must portray the lead character of a Black man diagnosed with HIV in Island City Stage’s newest production of “One in Two,” by Donja R. Love. This compelling story, an unflinching portrait of being Black and gay in America today, will run from August 4 – September 4, 2022. “One in Two” is the last production of the award-winning theater company’s 10th Anniversary 2021-22 South Florida Season.

Directed by San Diego’s Moxie Theatre co-founder and NAACP theatre award-winner Delicia Turner Sonnenberg, “One in Two” refers to the current HIV projection rate that 1 in 2 black men who have sex with men (MSM) and 1 in 4 Latino MSM in the United States will be diagnosed with HIV during their lifetime, according to a 2016 analysis by researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Unlike other plays, in this production, the audience chooses nightly which actor must portray the fated lead character.

“One in Two” stars Kevane Coleman, Randall Swinton and Nathaniel J. Ryan.

Kevane La’Marr Coleman was last seen in San Diego’s Diversionary Theatre’s production of “One in Two” in 2021. Other credits include “As Much As You Can,” “The Facts of Life-The Lost Episode,” “Our Gay Apparel,” “Stage Directions” (Diversionary Theatre); “Shockheaded Peter” (Cygnet Theatre); “The Secret Garden,” “1940s Radio Hour,” “Return to the Forbidden Planet” (New Village Arts); “9 Hours” (Old Globe Theatre); “South Pacific,” “Miss Saigon” (Moonlight Amphitheatre); “Grey Gardens,” “Angels in America: Millennium Approaches and Perestroika”; “Red Planet Respite” (ion Theatre), “Naughty or Nice, De-construction of a Drag Queen” (Circle Dot Dot); The Car Plays (La Jolla Playhouse); “Ragtime” (Starlight Musical Theatre) and many more. Kevane is a proud graduate of Boston College.

Randall Swinton is a local South Florida talent who does double duty onstage as an actor and as technical crew behind the scenes and backstage. Swinton has appeared as Joey Biltmore in “Guys and Dolls” (MNM Theatre), Cliff in “Luna Gale” (Boca Stage), Sticks Pig in “Shrek the Musical” (Slow Burn Theatre), Arvin in “Zanna, Don’t!” (Island City Stage) and as Harold Smith in the interactive crime mystery show “The Art Heist Experience” (Right Angle Entertainment). He is excited to be working with Island City Stage, once more.

Nathaniel J. Ryan has appeared on both stage and screen. His most recent stage credits include ”Topdog/Underdog” and “Fences” among many others. His film and television credits include “The Blacklist,” “Blue Bloods,” “Random Acts of Flyness” and the independent feature film “Luv Don’t Live Here.”

“One in Two” is sponsored by Sue Wilder with additional support from Community Foundation of Broward, the Broward County Cultural Council and Florida Department of State Division of Arts & Culture.

Island City Stage’s 10th anniversary 2021-22 season kicked off with “The Twentieth Century Way” by Tom Jacobson in October, followed by “Armature” by Andrew Kramer and “Suddenly Last Summer” by Tennessee Williams and “The Mystery of Irma Vep: A Penny Dreadful” by Charles Ludlam. “One in Two” by Donja Love is the company’s final season performance.

Island City Stage is located at 2304 N. Dixie Highway in Wilton Manors. Show tickets are $35 each and are available at islandcitystage.org/one-in-two.
