South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO) will launch its Summer Chamber Music Series on May 27 at the Center for Spiritual Living Fort Lauderdale. This series will offer music lovers a chance to enjoy the classics in a more personal, intimate atmosphere.

The Summer Program I will feature Huifang Chen (violin), Mei Mei Luo (violin), Roberto Henriquez (viola), Claudio Jaffe (cello) and Catherine Lan (piano) performing Beach’s Piano Quintet in F sharp minor, Op 67 and Brahms’ Piano Quintet in F minor, Op. 34

Amy Beach, a pioneering American composer, was first successful American female composer of large-scale art music in America, and the most performed composer of her generation. SFSO’s musicians will perform her Piano Quintet in F sharp minor, Op 67, a piece built on a theme drawn from Brahms’s piano quintet. The most widely performed of her chamber works, critics described the quintet as “truly modern” and “distinctly rhapsodic … in the fashion of our time, a work of poignant beauty, rich in exquisite melodies and lush harmonies.”

Upcoming Fort Lauderdale concerts include:

Summer Program II featuring Askar Salimdjanov (violin) and Tamila Salimdjanova (piano) performing Beethoven’s Violin Sonata No.1 in D major Op. 12 No.1, Strauss’ Violin Sonata in E-flat major, Op. 18, Frolov, Gershwin’s Concert Fantasy on Themes from Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess’ and Waxman’s Carmen Fantasie on Friday, June 24, at Center for Spiritual Living Fort Lauderdale

Summer Program III featuring Huifang Chen (violin), Felicia Besan (viola), Claudio Jaffe (cello) and Catherine Lan (piano) performing Gottsch’s Impromptu No. 3 for Cello and Piano, Mozart’s Piano Quartet in G minor, K478, and Schumann’s Piano Quartet in E-flat, Op. 47 on Friday, July 22, at Center for Spiritual Living Fort Lauderdale.

South Florida Symphony Orchestra, recently named Broward Center for the Performing Arts’ first Partner in the Arts for its affiliated $30 million renovated venue, The Parker, recently concluded its 2021-22 season in spectacular style on April 27.

General admission tickets for each program are $30; a three concert package is $75 ($15 savings). Student tickets are $15 each. Tickets are available to purchase by calling (954) 522-8445 or by visiting https://southfloridasymphony.org/summer-with-the-symphony.

According to Faith XLVII, “The work begs to question the insanity of how, in a time when we as a society most need to nurture and grow and heal, continue to burn and rage and decimate.” Concerns of the human condition appear repeatedly in Faith’s works which can be found in exhibitions and collections around the world.

The print is 18” x 24” on Moab Entrada Rag Natural 290 gsm paper. Limited Edition of 100. Prints will also be available online beginning May 6, 2022 at www.museumofgraffiti.com/shop

Few artists can claim a heritage that is as diverse and richly layered as Haitian American musician Leyla McCalla. In Breaking the Thermometer to Hide the Fever McCalla finds inspiration from her past and present as she debuts a new multidisciplinary performance exploring the legacy of Radio Haiti-Inter, Haiti’s first privately owned Creole-speaking radio station. The work weaves together arrangements of Haitian songs, traditional dances, audio and video recordings and Leyla’s own personal storytelling. Through this juxtaposition of voices — the personal and political, the anecdotal and the journalistic — Leyla gives expression to the enduring spirit of Haiti’s people.

Mr. Hospitality is thrilled to announce ‘A Night at Sahara’ at El Tucán, a Pride-month dinner party pop-up to celebrate the life and legacy of Leslie Cohen and her legendary New York City nightclub, Sahara. Notably, the first bar in New York City owned and operated by women for women, Sahara was also the first upscale women’s club that showcased women in art, politics, and music.

“Sahara represented a milestone along the arduous and ongoing road to gay and lesbian liberation, a turning point between the representation of gay people as perverse and sick to the beginning of acceptance and inclusion.” – Leslie Cohen (1947 – 2022)

Beginning at 7PM, on Wednesday, April 27th, El Tucán, the vibrant Brickell supper club will be featuring LIVE music, seductive performances, and an exclusively curated menu, poised to be nothing short of incredible. To commemorate this lively evening with the utmost glamour and extravagance it deserves, El Tucán will be hosting the ever-so iconic Carmen Carrera – TV personality star and transgender rights activist – who will take the stage to enchant guests with a stimulating burlesque performance. Throughout the night, DJ Willy Monfret will be spinning upbeat house music, keeping the party going until late in the evening. A special prix-fixe menu ($65pp+) will be offered during the night, which will include highlights such as the Wagyu Beef Tataki, Pineapple Teriyaki Salmon, Spicy Beef Tenderloin, and Truffle Bucatini Pasta, among many more El Tucán favorites. Diners are welcome to order a la carte as well.

In support of our LGBT+ community, a portion of the night’s proceeds will be donated to Equality Florida, a non-profit organization, dedicated to securing full equality for Florida’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community.

For reservations please email reservations@eltucanmiami.com or call (305)535-0065.

South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO), led by Sebrina María Alfonso, will present Mahler’s “Adagietto” from Symphony No. 5, Copland’s Clarinet Concerto featuring David Shifrin, clarinet, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major, “Eroica,” as part of its Masterworks V series. The concert will take place on April 27, at 7:30 p.m., at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale.

South Florida Symphony Orchestra’s season finale concert commences with Mahler’s fourth movement of his Fifth Symphony — a love note to his future wife — and Copland’s Clarinet Concerto, also referred to Concerto for Clarinet and String Orchestra (with Harp and Piano). Acclaimed soloist, David Shifrin, joins SFSO for this melodious and jazzy two-movement concerto, which was originally commissioned by renowned jazz clarinetist Benny Goodman.

One of only three wind players to have been awarded the Avery Fisher Prize since the award’s inception in 1974, Shifrin is in constant demand as an orchestral soloist, recitalist and chamber music collaborator. He has appeared with numerous symphonies in the U.S., and internationally with orchestras in Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Japan, Korea and Taiwan. He has also received critical acclaim as a recitalist, appearing at such venues as Alice Tully Hall, Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall and the 92nd Street Y in New York City, as well as at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. A much sought-after chamber musician, he has collaborated frequently with such distinguished ensembles and artists as the Tokyo and Emerson String Quartets, Wynton Marsalis, and pianists Emanuel Ax and André Watts.

An artist member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center since 1989, Shifrin served as its artistic director from 1992 to 2004. He has toured extensively throughout the US with CMSLC and hosted and performed in several national television broadcasts on PBS’s Live From Lincoln Center. He has been the artistic director of Chamber Music Northwest in Portland, Oregon since 1981 and is also the artistic director of the Phoenix Chamber Music Festival. In addition, he has served as principal clarinetist with the Cleveland Orchestra, American Symphony Orchestra (under Stokowski), the Honolulu and Dallas symphonies, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and the New York Chamber Symphony. Shifrin joined the faculty at the Yale School of Music in 1987 and was appointed artistic director of the Chamber Music Society of Yale and Yale’s annual concert series at Carnegie Hall in September 2008. He has also served on the faculties of The Juilliard School, University of Southern California, University of Michigan, Cleveland Institute of Music and the University of Hawaii. In 2007 he was awarded an honorary professorship at China’s Central Conservatory in Beijing.

Shifrin’s recordings on Delos, DGG, Angel/EMI, Arabesque, BMG, SONY, and CRI have consistently garnered praise and awards.

SFSO’s magnificent 2021/22 season culminates with one of Beethoven’s most celebrated works: his monumental Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major. The “Eroica” Symphony represents a turning point not only in Beethoven’s career — but also in the history of music — setting a new symphonic template for future composers to emulate. This is truly a “Sinfonia Eroica,” or heroic symphony.

South Florida Symphony Orchestra, recently named Broward Center for the Performing Arts’ first Partner in the Arts for its affiliated $30 million renovated venue, The Parker, launched its 2021-22 season in spectacular style on November 17, 2021.

Tickets for Masterworks V: Beethoven, Copland and Mahler start at $15 for the April 27 concert at The Parker (707 NE 8th St, Fort Lauderdale). Tickets are on sale, now, at southfloridasymphony.org/masterworksv. Student tickets and group rates are also available by calling (954) 522-8445 or emailing info@southfloridasymphony.org.

The concert will take place on April 28, at 7:30 p.m., at Temple Israel of Greater Miami.

South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO), led by Sebrina María Alfonso, will present Mozart’s Concerto for Two Pianos in E-flat Major, K. 365, featuring Catherine Lan and Tao Lin of Duo Beaux Arts, Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3 in A minor, Opus 56, “Scotch” and Rossini’s The Italian Girl in Algiers Overture as part of its Masterworks IV series. The concert will commence on March 26, at 7:30 p.m., at Tennessee Williams Theatre at The College of The Florida Keys (5901 College Road, Key West).

The program begins with the sparkling overture to Rossini’s comic opera The Italian Girl in Algiers, which is said to be among the most memorable in all of Rossini’s work. It is known for its distinct opening of slow, quiet woodwinds in imitation of pizzicato strings, leading to a sudden loud burst of sound from the full ensemble.

The concert continues with Mozart’s Concerto for Two Pianos in E-flat Major, K. 365, featuring the dynamic Catherine Lan and Tao Lin — husband and wife – of Duo Beaux Arts. The pair will join SFSO on the mainstage for the first time, performing one of the limited number of Mozart works for two or more solo instruments with orchestra. They were regular performers during SFSO’s virtual Intermission Music Series, presented for free during Covid shutdown. Lan also performs as a member of the South Florida Symphony Orchestra, most recently during its Handel’s Messiah concerts. Formed in 2008, Duo Beaux Arts is critically acclaimed for its adrenalized performances across Europe and the United States. The pair has been featured on Fox 4’s “Morning Blend TV,” Maine Public and in Venice magazine, Asian-Trend magazine, World Journal New York, and Gulfshore Life magazine. Season highlights include recitals at Swan City Piano Festival and the prestigious Cosmos Club in Washington D.C., as well as concert tours in Hungary and Canada.

The program concludes with Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3 in A minor, Opus 56. Some of Mendelssohn’s most brilliant musical inspirations came from his travels. While on holiday in Scotland, he was particularly moved by the picturesque, evocative ruins of Holyrood Chapel in Edinburgh, the inspiration for his Third Symphony — also known as the “Scottish” or “Scotch” Symphony.

Recently named Broward Center for the Performing Arts’ first Partner in the Arts for its affiliated $30 million renovated venue, The Parker, South Florida Symphony Orchestra’s 2021-22 season runs through April 28, 2022.

Tickets for Masterworks IV: Mozart, Mendelssohn & Rossini start at $25 for the Tennessee Williams Theatre at The College of The Florida Keys and are on sale at southfloridasymphony.org/masterworksiv. Student tickets and group rates are also available by calling (954) 522-8445 or emailing info@southfloridasymphony.org.

Paying homage to one of America’s most celebrated playwrights during his birthday month, Island City Stage will present its debut of Tennessee William’s gothic mystery Suddenly, Last Summer, March 17 – April 17, 2022. Suddenly, Last Summer is part of the award-winning theater company’s 10th Anniversary 2021-22 South Florida Season.

Evoking themes of aging, beauty, hypocrisy, greed, sexual repression and cannibalism, the play is also the one that the author, himself, considered his most poetic.

On a hot, steamy afternoon in 1936 New Orleans, we find Violet Venable and her niece, Catherine, waging battle in a war that will cement the legacy of Violet’s son, Sebastian. Was he a brilliant artist, devoted son or sexual predator? What really happened last summer?

Directed by Andy Rogow, Suddenly, Last Summer stars Angie Radosh as Violet Venable, Jeanine Gangloff Levy as Catherine Holly and Jonathan Furedy as Dr. Cukrowicz. Lisa King as Mrs. Holly, Laurie Tanner as Miss Foxhill, Christian Vandepas as George Holly and Carol Caselle as Sister Felicity round out the cast.

Suddenly, Last Summer is sponsored by Funding Arts Broward (FAB) and is supported by Our Fund, the SHS Foundation, the Broward County Cultural Council and Florida Department of State Division of Arts & Culture.

Island City Stage’s 10th anniversary 2021-22 season kicked off with The Twentieth Century Way by Tom Jacobson in October, followed by Armature by Andrew Kramer, currently running through February 27. Upcoming productions include The Mystery of Irma Vep by Charles Ludlam from June 9 – July 10, 2022 and One In Two by Donja R. Love from August 4 – September 4, 2022.

Island City Stage is located at 2304 N. Dixie Highway in Wilton Manors. Tickets start at $35 and are available at islandcitystage.org/suddenly-last-summer. Other discounts are available for groups.

PEACOCK FOUNDATION STUDIO at The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. Spoken Soul Showcase Vol. 14
Girls Just Want To Have Fun
A Spoken Word Experience Spotlighting Local Women Artists

If 2020 taught us anything, it is the importance of making room for joy. This year, the leading ladies of Spoken Soul Festival (SSF) embark on a journey through joy.

Spoken Soul Showcase Vol. 14, directed by founder Deborah Magedalena, is an immersive, multidisciplinary spoken word experience that explores a range of authentic emotions through women-centered narratives. Founding members Amy Baez, Annette Gonzalez Silvera, Veronica Barrios-Garcia and Omilani (SSF 2013) curate the four stages of happiness: anticipation, savoring, expression and reflection. The piece is guided by spoken word artist Mori Taiye (SSF 2020) and accentuated by visual artist Laetitia “Laeti” Adam-Rabel (SSF 2020).

Get ready to laugh, sing, dance, cry and shout, because after all, girls just wanna have fun!

PERFORMANCE PIECE DESCRIPTIONS
ANTICIPATE: A Journey to Perfection
by Annette Gonzalez
“A Journey to Perfection” delves into a new mother’s journey to find hope after postpartum depression. The author shares her struggle with the pretense of social media in a spoken word film capturing silhouettes and shadows created by the moon. The piece also includes a live performance of contemporary dance.

SAVOR: The Spirit of Play
by Amy Baez
“The Spirit of Play” is the story of a daughter’s musician father serving as her teacher of playfulness. It is about how his spirit has influenced and inspired her to move through life. The author uses spoken word to share her memories along with a live performance of a flutist playing along to salsa, much like her self-taught father did when she was a child.

EXPRESS: Life Is a Carnival
by Omilani
“Life Is a Carnival” is a diasporic audiovisual journey featuring live original reggaeton, samba, salsa and rock songs by the author. The piece includes spoken word and visual arts segments on film in which the author expresses moments of self-doubt and the transformation to unapologetic, fiery self-love.

REFLECT: A Celebration of Joy
by Veronica Barrios Garcia
“A Celebration of Joy” is inspired by how a song can take you back to the innocence and joy of childhood. This piece is a recorded spoken word performance about finding light in darkness and celebrating despite life’s challenges. It concludes with a live performance from an all-girl rock band, followed by a dance party.

CARABOOM is a genre-defying spectacle of silliness and physical poetry, following the trials and triumphs of the Caraboom Family. Foam cannons, bubble machines and human water fountains immerse participants and passengers in a splash filled adventure while the Family tries its very best to keep it together! There are honking concertos, microfiber dancing, and catharsis for everybody. But a carwash, you ask? You’ll have to come and see.

CARABOOM tells the story of: A loopy family opens a car wash in a pandemic. They are clueless, genius and a bit idiotic, tasked to erase the past and reframe it. To handle the flow coming, they conform to kooky timing, ruled by whistles whistling, who control their states of being. They clean or pretend to, entertain to distract you, while family impromptus happen all around you. They daydream plots, burst into numbers, and live in a world, a whole lot, like ours. They planned an intermission. The intermission is probably, The Show.

Great for all ages, CARABOOM is a sensational playscape for togethering and catharsis.

Come delight, cheer and boogie with the Caraboom Family!

Experience the show from our BOOM ZONES, SPLASH ZONE or within the comfort of YOUR CAR.

The concert will commence on March 23, at 7:30 p.m., at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale.

Tickets for Masterworks IV: Mozart, Mendelssohn & Rossini start at $15. Tickets are on sale, now at southfloridasymphony.org/masterworksiv. Additional health and safety concert attendance protocols can be found on the site. Student tickets and group rates are also available by calling (954) 522-8445 or emailing info@southfloridasymphony.org.

It’s 1995. Monica Lewinsky is 22 and an Intern at the White House. She has a crush on the President of the United States. You think you know the story. After all, you did hear it from the media, the news, the tabloids…but you might come to realize you don’t know it at all. This story is about mothers and daughters, ambitious politicians who are devoted wives, and, yes, the men…but they don’t have a say in how this story ends. Monica and Hillary have never met, never spoken to each other; but what if, three decades after the fact, they did meet? A world-premiere play written by Winter Miller (The Public Theater’s In Darfur) and directed by Margot Bordelon (Playwrights Horizons’ Wives).

Imagine the future. Set in 2050, Miami’s famed museum-park, the Deering Estate, has been converted into a residential complex made up of tenants who have been displaced or retreated from different parts of the world due to climate change. When rooms become available, they decide to host their first open house while re-opening partially as an art space after recent repairs.

The public is invited to visit the property and learn about their way of life. The personal lives and conflicts of the residents, and other strange phenomena, get in the way, and visitors must navigate scenes that explore notions of community, climate change empowerment, loss and love.

Conceived by Susan Caraballo, resident artist at Live Arts Miami and Deering Estate, written by Juan C. Sánchez and co-directed by Jennifer De Castroverde. Created in collaboration with over 30 Miami-based artists.

Prelude to 2100 consists of two experiential components: the TOUR and the OPEN HOUSE.

The TOUR provides audiences with an intimate walking tour of the complex and introduces many of its current residents through an immersive theatrical experience.
The free OPEN HOUSE in Deering Estate’s Courtyard features various interactive installations and performances by diverse Miami-based artists.

South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO) rings in 2022 with the old and the new! The esteemed orchestra, conducted by Sebrina María Alfonso, will perform the world premiere of local composer John D. Gottsch’s Princess Yurievskaya followed by Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique as part of its Masterworks III series. The concert will commence on January 20, at 7:30 p.m., at Temple Israel of Greater Miami.

The concert will begin with the premiere live performance of Princess Yurievskaya by SFSO composer-in-residence, John D. Gottsch. Princess Yurievskaya charts the passionate love of Catherine Dolgorukova and Tsar Alexander II — from their first meeting and eventual marriage to his assassination. This vivid narrative is full of exciting dances and torrid romance, irradiated with evocative orchestral solos.

In June 2020, Gottsch’s debut album – featuring Princess Yurievskaya and another SFSO premiere, Sunset, was released by Naxos Records, the world’s leading classical music label. The works, performed by Maestra Sebrina María Alfonso and South Florida Symphony Orchestra, were recorded at Nova Southeastern University’s Rose and Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center on March 10 -11, 2020, prior to the challenges and closures of the world health pandemic.

John D. Gottsch was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and moved to Florida with his family, shortly thereafter. He spent his youth in the lake country of the Sunshine State traveling extensively and observing natural habitats. These explorations of Florida gave him an enduring love for its beauty and wildlife. He has been a lifelong composer and a number of his compositions reflect his deep appreciation of the outdoors. SFSO also performed Gottsch’s Bagatelles for Violin & Piano as part of its Summer With the Symphony Series in June 2021. His piano suite, Homosassa, premiered in Palm Beach in 2020. His piano quintet, Maryland Hunt, premiered at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Washington, D.C in 2018 and has been performed in Philadelphia, Vienna, Rotterdam and Baltimore. Gottsch, a full-time doctor, now splits his time between Baltimore and Key West.

The program concludes with a work that Tchaikovsky considered to be the best of all his creations. In the last few months of his life, Tchaikovsky composed his haunting Symphony No. 6 in B minor – which made its premiere just nine days before his death. He called it “The Passionate Symphony,” using the equivalent Russian word which the French then mistranslated into “Pathétique” (meaning “evoking pity”) after his death.

South Florida Symphony Orchestra, recently named Broward Center for the Performing Arts’ first Partner in the Arts for its affiliated $30 million renovated venue, The Parker, launched its 2021-22 season in spectacular style on November 17 with Berlioz’ spirited Roman Carnival Overture; Ravel’s vibrant orchestration of Mussorgsky’s musical art gallery, Pictures at an Exhibition; and a 100th birthday celebration in honor of Astor Piazzolla, featuring The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires (Las Cuatro Estaciones Porteñas) performed by violinist Siwoo Kim. The season continued in early December with performances of Handel’s glorious Messiah to full houses in Fort Lauderdale and Miami. The season runs through April 28, 2022.

General admission tickets are $36 for Masterworks III: Tchaikovsky & Gottsch at Temple Israel of Greater Miami (137 NE 19th Street). Tickets are on sale, now at southfloridasymphony.org/masterworksiii. Additional health and safety concert attendance protocols can be found on the site. Student tickets and group rates are also available by calling (954) 522-8445 or emailing info@southfloridasymphony.org.

An open bar and live entertainment are also on the menu. The highlight of the evening will be the fashion runway show that will feature the Men of Style honorees wearing the season’s top trending styles from Macy’s and Dillard’s. An afterparty will be held at Blue Martini.

Event sponsors and contributors include South Florida Ford as the title sponsor, Signature Grand as a presenting sponsor, and supporting sponsors Macy’s, Dillard’s, Memorial Healthcare System, GPR | Goodman Public Relations, City & Shore magazine, OutClique, Blue Martini, Cooper’s Hawk Winery and Restaurants, Seasons 52 and The Capital Grille.

Online voting, $25 per vote, is available at www.galleriamall-fl.com/events/men-of-style. Online supporters are encouraged to vote for their favorite man/charity by noon on December 2. Online votes and ticket sales count toward the announcement of the winning man of style who will be announced at the live event and receive an additional financial contribution for his designated charity.

World AIDS Museum and Educational Center (WAM) and Galleria Fort Lauderdale will kick off World AIDS Day on December 1 with Rock the Ribbon, a public event designed to raise awareness and voices in unison for global health!

Rock The Ribbon will commence at 8:30 a.m. with a gathering of elected officials including City of Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis, fellow HIV-related agencies and other stakeholders. Special performances by the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus under the direction of Gary Keating, Camie Liz and DJ Aulden Brown will add flair to rock the crowd. The event will take place outdoors under the covered valet parking entrance. Attendees are encouraged to register in advance at WAM’s Rock The Ribbon page.

The public is also invited to view a portion of the AIDS Memorial Quilt which portrays powerful stories of activism, love, healing, hope and remembrance to connect the story of HIV/AIDS to the important issues impacting our nation, today. The quilt is on display through Dec. 10.

According to National AIDS Memorial, 40 years into the AIDS pandemic, more than 700,000 lives in the U.S. have been lost to AIDS and more than 1.1 million people live with HIV and an estimated 1 in 7 people do not know they have HIV. In the last figures reported in 2018, Black/African American gay and bisexual men account for the largest number of new HIV diagnoses.

The AIDS Memorial Quilt was conceived in November of 1985 by long-time San Francisco gay rights activist Cleve Jones. On October 11, 1987, the Quilt was displayed for the first time on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., during the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. It covered a space larger than a football field and included 1,920 panels. Today, the AIDS Memorial Quilt is an epic 54-ton tapestry that includes nearly 50,000 panels dedicated to more than 105,000 individuals. It is the premiere symbol of the AIDS pandemic, a living memorial to a generation lost to AIDS and an important HIV prevention education tool. With hundreds of thousands of people contributing their talents to making the memorial panels, and tens of thousands of volunteers to help display it, the Quilt is considered the largest community arts project in history.

The AIDS Memorial Quilt Display and World AIDS Day kickoff ceremony are sponsored by Galleria Fort Lauderdale, Our Fund, Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus, Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward County Cultural Council, Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau and Florida Department of State, Division of Arts & Culture.

Shops at Merrick Park, Coral Gables’ pristine destination for fine shopping and dining, will present “Back to Tradition,” its 18th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, sponsored by Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, on Thursday, November 18, at 6 p.m. One of the largest tree lighting ceremonies and holiday celebrations in South Florida, the event will include the 50-foot tree-lighting and a live performance by South Florida’s own Preston Howell, a contestant on NBC’s The Voice. Attendees will also enjoy a variety of interactive activities, entertainment and a highly anticipated appearance by Santa Claus who will kick-off the festive season.

The retail destination will transform into a winter wonderland with a live performance by Miami’s Preston Howell of NBC’s The Voice who will serenade attendees with holiday favorites. Howell was one of just eight singers to turn four chairs during the blind auditions on The Voice Season 17. The teen accomplished the feat with a cover of “Dream a Little Dream of Me” by The Mamas and the Papas, landing a spot on Team John Legend.

The Miami Royal Ballet and Coral Gables Senior High School Gablettes will add to the festive spirit along with face painters, holiday costumed characters and a photo booth. Attendees are encouraged to spread the warmth of the season and bring unwrapped toys for children in care of Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.

One of the event highlights is Santa’s grand arrival down San Lorenzo Avenue on the Coral Gables Fire Department’s fire truck. Special guest host Belkys Nerey, award-winning co-anchor of WSVN Channel 7 News, will help flip the magical switch along with Coral Gables Mayor Vince Lago to illuminate the tree, signaling the official start of the holiday shopping season.

This year’s popular event will introduce a new majestic 50-foot tree with a six-foot-tall, illuminated star topper. The tree is adorned with LED custom colorful lighting, concert grade sound and a snow show. Shoppers can view and pose with the holiday tree through early January 2022.

South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO) welcomes audiences back to rediscover the thrill of live classical music! The esteemed symphony, recently named Broward Center for the Performing Arts’ first Partner in the Arts for its affiliated $30 million renovated venue, The Parker, launches its 2021-22 season in spectacular style on November 17 at 7:30 p.m. with Berlioz’ spirited Roman Carnival Overture; Ravel’s vibrant orchestration of Mussorgsky’s musical art gallery, Pictures at an Exhibition; and a 100th birthday celebration in honor of Astor Piazzolla, featuring The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires (Las Cuatro Estaciones Porteñas) performed by violinist Siwoo Kim.

South Florida Symphony’s 2021-22 season opens with “nine minutes of dashing music” by Berlioz, his overture to opera Benvenuto Cellini, called The Roman Carnival. Also on the bill is Ravel’s vibrant orchestration of Mussorgsky’s musical art gallery, Pictures at an Exhibition.

In celebration of Astor Piazzolla’s 100th birthday, South Florida Symphony presents his response to Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons — with an Argentinian tango twist. Violinist Siwoo Kim returns to the SFSO stages to perform the father of nuevo tango’s The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, an unusual collection of individual tangos that form a remarkable whole.

Called “incisive” and “compelling” by The New York Times, Siwoo Kim, charmed the South Florida Symphony Orchestra audiences with his performance Brahms Violin Concerto in January 2020. Siwoo performs globally as soloist and chamber musician, and he is the co-founding artistic director of VIVO Music Festival in his hometown of Columbus, Ohio.

Upcoming concerts will include Masterworks II: Handel’s Messiah on December 1; Masterworks III: Tchaikovsky and Gottsch Princess Yurievskaya – world premiere on January 19; Masterworks IV: Mozart, Mendelssohn and Rossini on March 23 and Masterworks V: Beethoven, Copland and Bach on April 27.

Tickets start at just $15 for individual concerts at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale with five-concert subscription packages starting at $99. Opening night on December 28 will feature an abbreviated, 75-minute performance.

Miami’s leading multicultural, contemporary-dance ensemble, Peter London Global Dance Company (PLGDC) is set to premiere TOUCH and RAIN ON ME, works created during the height of the pandemic. PLGDC created a contemporary, Afro-Caribbean dance-fusion compilation showcasing the struggles many people faced throughout the pandemic.

The pandemic evicted us from our daily “normal.” We witnessed home evictions. We experienced eviction in our personal and intimate relationships. And activities involving touch became a threat to health and life. The pandemic brought separation from careers, income, businesses, creativity, worship and play, while looming over the community like an unbeatable giant, like a David and Goliath standoff. The great outdoors of beaches, parks, woodlands, etc., became more beloved and desirable for our health and well-being.

The world premieres of TOUCH and RAIN ON ME will have live accompaniment by the world-class Ballet and Dance Orchestra (BAD), with scores commissioned by PLGDC and composed by BAD founding artistic director Ezra Haugabrooks. The program includes world premieres by London, Brooke Logan, Gentry Isaiah George and Justin Rapaport.

These include Rapaport’s “Start Again” and “Passing By,” recipient of the Danish Dance Theater Award at the 14th Copenhagen International Choreography Competition and danced by Justin and Evan Rapaport.

The program also includes a world premiere by Jamaii Melvin set to music by award-winning international jazz star Nicole Henry, and a commissioned score by award-winning international jazz musician Ettienne Charles for London’s new work, “Kalinda Wash.”

Program:
THE STREETS:
During this time, it is estimated that there has been a significant increase in evictions from homes, exacerbating the crisis of the pandemic.

THE MIAMI DAVID: (Rafael del Vizo, Gentry Isaiah George, Aaron López, Leon Cobb):
The pandemic has forced people to self-quarantine and mandated lockdowns and the closing of public spaces. The pandemic stands like a Goliath against its victims. A seemingly insurmountable force and battle.

JOURNEY TO TEA: (Deja Darbonne and Aaron López)
The simple act of sharing tea or quality time with a loved one was suspended.

MY BROKEN HEART (Johnae Wright & Rafael del Vizo)
The inability to see loved ones, to touch or say goodbye has made their final transitions difficult and produced emotional trauma for many. Relationships broken, suspended, lost, sudden goodbyes forever.

KALINDA WASH (Kalinda; Jade McCartney. The river; Aaron López, Deja Darbonne, Gentry Isaiah George, Rafael del Vizo):
“Wash your hands.” That is if you have clean water or water to spare to wash your hands. Water became more essential in the pandemic. “Kalinda” is the Indian (Sanskrit) word for the sun. Mythology has it that the Kalindi waters flows from the mountains of the Kalinda to the ocean. In this dance, we acknowledge the divine waters and the sun that is the source of our existence and renewal.

Website
Cost: Free, live interactive Zoom session

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will feature Florida historian Cesar A. Becerra on the next August 12 noon segment of its “Meet the Author” interactive Zoom series. The new free series takes place on the second Thursday of each month. Viewers may register at https://bit.ly/HFLMeetTheAuthorBecerra.

Cesar A. Becerra is the author of Orange Blossom 2.0, a soon-to-be-released novel debuting in conjunction with the City of Miami’s 125th anniversary. Orange Blossom 2.0 is based on Becerra’s decades of research that tells the true story of the founding of Miami and the remarkable contributions of landowner, developer and savvy businesswoman Mary Brickell who seems to have been largely overlooked and overshadowed in the pages of our past. The book is available for purchase at www.sofloweird.com/product-page/orange-blossom-2-0

A South Florida historian who’s taken part in chronicling and sharing the stories of the region for more than two decades, Becerra is the author of half a dozen books ranging from hiking the Appalachian Trail to the logging history of the Big Cypress Preserve. Becerra is an avid explorer who drove through all 50 states in a one-year road trip to rediscover America for The Travel Channel. He has also hiked the 2,160-mile Appalachian Trail from Maine to Georgia, in 388 days through 14 states and 4 seasons. Becerra is former publisher of The Everglade Magazine, an award winning publication printed during Everglades National Park’s 50th anniversary. He has walked, hiked, slogged, canoed, kayaked, airboated and swamp buggied all across the Everglades. In 1997, The Miami Herald named him an “Everglades Evangelist.” Cesar’s love for the past and sense of adventure is where his two worlds unite. He has a penchant for hidden history and knows no boundaries or distances when it comes to searching for it.

Becerra joins previous novelists Dr. Joe Knetsch and Y.M. Masson, architect and historic preservation consultant Arthur Jay Marcus, historian John Bailey, plus authors Kingsley Guy and Donn R. Colee, Jr. as part of History Fort Lauderdale’s prestigious “Meet the Author” series, a chance to converse with Florida-based writers, launched in February. Upcoming novelists will be announced.
